Michigan’s traffic deaths dipped 3% last year, but the picture is mixed: crashes rose slightly while cyclist and pedestrian fatalities surged 21% and 18%, respectively. Big truck deaths also climbed 16%. Still, alcohol-related deaths fell 14%, work zone fatalities dropped 14%, and motorcyclist deaths declined 10%. The state’s new SAFER by 2030 plan may be helping overall, but urgent action is needed to tackle the rising risks for vulnerable road users.
