Transcript
- 0:12Hello to all the comic fans, Marvel geeks and all the nerds
- 0:14in between. Welcome to another episode of
- 0:16the Vigilante Vibes podcast where we talk all things Marvel
- 0:18and other parts of nerd culture like comics and movies without
- 0:22the toxicity that's taken up way too much space in each and every
- 0:24fandom. I'm your host Megan Nicole and
- 0:26today I am so very pleased to introduce a very special guest.
- 0:29Today I am joined by the incredible writer of Here Walks
- 0:32Monsters Comics and the Co host of the very entertaining comic
- 0:36book podcast Planet Nerd tween Kyle Goodman.
- 0:39Hi, thank you for having me. Thank you for coming on.
- 0:41I'm very excited for this because I read the first two
- 0:44issues of Here Comes Monsters, Here Walks Monsters, and I'm not
- 0:50even a horror kind of person, but I was hooked.
- 0:53You had me there. I, I, I, I take that as such a
- 0:56huge compliment. I, I really try to make it.
- 0:59While it is very much a horror zombie story, I wanted to appeal
- 1:03to a large base of readers. Like my, my mom reads it and she
- 1:09hates zombie stuff and she's like, this is really good.
- 1:12I'm like, that means so much because you don't have a lot of
- 1:17a lot of people will just like me.
- 1:18I'll I could watch a horrible zombie movie and still be very
- 1:22entertained. It could be like the like worst
- 1:25zombie movie of all time. And I'm still like, yeah,
- 1:27zombies. But if you're not into zombies
- 1:30or or horror in general to still be interested in a horror title,
- 1:35I mean that's better. Praise can't be had.
- 1:38I mean that that's I I enjoy like to me that one of the best
- 1:42comments I've received so far. Thank you.
- 1:45That's so endearing. Also that your mom loves.
- 1:47It that's so sweet. And.
- 1:50You know, it's really funny. Like we joke all the time
- 1:51because, you know, when I was growing up, I was always into
- 1:54comic books, into like movies and all this stuff.
- 1:57And she always used to joke that, like, you spend so much
- 2:00time doing that, it's not like it's ever going to amount to
- 2:02anything. And now I kind of give her like
- 2:06amounts to nothing and she's like, all right, fine and always
- 2:11worth it. You were right, whatever.
- 2:13And I give her crap because it like like Pokémon too, like the
- 2:15cards and stuff like that. I was like, listen, we got to
- 2:17hold these cause one day they'll be worth a lot.
- 2:19Like no, no, no they won't. It's whatever.
- 2:22It's just a little piece of paper now.
- 2:24It's like, see Ma, if you knew where that binder was with those
- 2:263 Charizard, we could retire tomorrow.
- 2:31I've had the same thought. I've had the same conversation
- 2:33with my mother, who when she when I was younger, I was like,
- 2:36why do we keep buying these packs of Pokémon cards?
- 2:39They don't. What are what are they going to
- 2:40do? Just litter your floor?
- 2:42And now I'm like, mom, we had binders and binders.
- 2:45We would be rich. We would be eating the rich.
- 2:49We'd be everything right now. And she just prefers not to
- 2:53speak about it. I don't know what you're talking
- 2:57about. He's.
- 2:58Like they're around here somewhere.
- 3:00Like, no, they're not. You know they're not.
- 3:01You know you threw them away. Exactly.
- 3:04That's why I swear that I would. I never would throw them out,
- 3:07she says. I'm like, well, we can't find
- 3:09them, so someone took them or throw them away out.
- 3:13Listen, I've gone through all the storage units, I've gone
- 3:15through all the attics. I haven't found them yet because
- 3:18believe me, I went looking. I think we all did because we
- 3:22were like, I'm sick of working. This is my last resort.
- 3:26It's. Like you know how easily we
- 3:28could retire if we had one of because I I know joke when I
- 3:31tell you Pokémon. I had three charizards, the
- 3:34least 2 blastoises and all from the first the the the first
- 3:37wave. Like not even the second
- 3:39edition, not the jungle packs. No no no the first, the OG.
- 3:43Like I had Alakazam mute, I had them all at the ancient muse.
- 3:48Oh my God I had like 6 of them. I don't know where they are now.
- 3:53But you know what they They sure as hell kept those Beanie Babies
- 3:56that they swore would be their retirement.
- 3:59OK, I I can't really talk because I have a box full of
- 4:05beanie babies that I thought was going to help me retire.
- 4:07I I've got 2 Princess Diana bears.
- 4:09I have them too. I'm like, I have them.
- 4:12And I was like, why were you so selective though?
- 4:14Why them? Well.
- 4:17Because they're so cute. Now my kids play with them like
- 4:21that could be millions of dollars in your hands.
- 4:23You know, 20 years ago if I would have just sold them when
- 4:26they were hot, I'd be able to retire right now because at one
- 4:30point those things are worth twenty $30,000.
- 4:34Like I I was sure it would be a million by now.
- 4:39That's one of those big ones I was wrong about apparently.
- 4:43Weren't we all, though? Now it's like the weirdest
- 4:46things are the things that that are worth money.
- 4:49Like they said the orange VHS for Rugrats is worth a bit butt
- 4:56ton of money and I'm like but I had that.
- 4:59I. Wait a minute.
- 5:01I think I wait. I I know I still have those.
- 5:06Like wait. OK, what's when we're done with
- 5:09this interview? The first thing I'm doing is
- 5:11running out there to my drawer of VH s S You know, it's funny,
- 5:15though, when it comes to things like that, like sometimes just
- 5:19having it isn't enough. Like you have to have, you know,
- 5:21the right person to get into the right auction to make sure,
- 5:23because I've got a lot of those black diamond Disney still in
- 5:27the it's still in the packaging. But if I don't find the right
- 5:30vendor to bring it to like Pristine and get them to get all
- 5:34those rich people to bid on it, it's it's worth nothing but the
- 5:38paperweight it is now. It's so true.
- 5:41And then they add so many stipulations, like they move the
- 5:44goal posts. So like, it still has to be
- 5:45wrapped in plastic. It cannot be opened.
- 5:47It has to do this and this. And it's like, you know what?
- 5:49You just just say you don't want it.
- 5:51What are you doing? What are we doing?
- 5:54If if it being in plastic is the only thing I got some plastic
- 5:56wrap and A and A and a hair hair dryer.
- 6:00I can make it wrapped again like.
- 6:02It'll work. It might not like work, but I'll
- 6:06make it work. It'll look good though.
- 6:09But to the wrong guy, it'll look perfect, right?
- 6:12Exactly. Exactly.
- 6:15So back to the comic. As you can see on my podcast,
- 6:19it's not very linear. We just kind of go where we go.
- 6:23It's ADHD. Yeah, that's kind of how our
- 6:25podcast is too. And me and you have now kind of
- 6:28like brought ourselves to like the point where like, all right,
- 6:32we got to try not to just go everywhere.
- 6:34We can go some places, but we can't go everywhere.
- 6:38Episodes being like 2 hours long, It's like, all right, you
- 6:40know what, never mind. We need to stop doing this a
- 6:42little. Bit it's side quests, you always
- 6:45have to take a side quest to make you.
- 6:47It makes getting to the end that more memorable.
- 6:50I would agree yes side quests are the best.
- 6:53So with Here Walks Monsters, where did you get your
- 6:57inspiration from for it? Because I feel like I can pull a
- 7:00few things from it and see where it came from, but I'm not you.
- 7:05Right. Oh well.
- 7:07So when it comes to where I got inspiration for the story
- 7:11itself, I really just kind of looked around and saw a lot of
- 7:16people acting badly and getting away with it.
- 7:19And I thought to myself, how many more people would act that
- 7:23way if they can get away with it?
- 7:25And how do you tell that story? Well, it has to be in the fall
- 7:28of humanity because society would teach tells people how to
- 7:32behave. Now when how I told this story,
- 7:36I, I drew a lot from Romero. I loved all of his movies.
- 7:40Of course, The Walking Dead. I, I can't write a zombie
- 7:44apocalypse comic book without at least giving praise to what came
- 7:49before. And, and I definitely think that
- 7:53when it comes to inspiration, it's more I, it's weird that a
- 7:57lot of my inspiration comes more from movies than it does any
- 8:01particular comic 'cause I, I let look at like movies that have
- 8:06great heroes that are not always good or the movies that have a
- 8:14hero adjacent that is actually the hero.
- 8:16Like Lord of the Rings, for instance, like everyone likes to
- 8:19say, oh, Aragon's a hero. Oh, Frodo's a hero.
- 8:22No, no, no, Sam Wise Gangi is the hero of Lord of the Rings.
- 8:26That's true. And he was not corrupted by the
- 8:28ring. He was, he's the one who got it
- 8:31where it needed to be. He was always the the the true
- 8:33North star. But everyone gives credit to
- 8:35Frodo gives credit to air gun, deservedly so.
- 8:38Don't get me wrong. But truly the hero is Sam and I.
- 8:43I like stories like that or like when the the hero is not 100%
- 8:48good. Like Sons of Anarchy, for
- 8:50instance, is a huge inspiration because I mean, how you're able
- 8:54to tell a Shakespearean drama with badass bikers and and all
- 9:00they did. Sutter is just a God.
- 9:04But like Jax, for instance, the main character that show he is a
- 9:08good guy, but he does a lot of bad things.
- 9:12So is he really a good guy? I mean, you can argue in the end
- 9:16he was, but you can also argue in the end that he wasn't.
- 9:19And, and that moral ambiguity makes these really interesting
- 9:23characters. And that's, that's so for me,
- 9:25that's probably where I draw a lot of my inspirations from
- 9:29movies and TV shows like that, that have those morally Gray
- 9:32good guys or the the secret heroes, you know, those are my
- 9:35kind of stories. I have to say I'm a big fan of
- 9:38those myself. It's like the imperfect hero,
- 9:42the one that's who has good intentions but was raised in the
- 9:46worst environment. So they're working through that.
- 9:49I could see that. I I do like that very much.
- 9:52And I think it shows a lot in your comic as well, especially
- 9:54in the first one, because that one I was on the edge of my seat
- 9:59because I was like, all right, who is she?
- 10:01Who's he? Who are they?
- 10:02Why are they doing this? Oh, there's a zombie, What's
- 10:04happening? What's going to happen?
- 10:05Like the whole time? And then at the end I was like,
- 10:07what did he do to me? Well, that, that again, that is
- 10:13some really good praise right there.
- 10:15And I, I did that on purpose. I, I didn't want you to know too
- 10:22much. I wanted you to, and that's the
- 10:24first issue. I want to just kind of be in the
- 10:26world. And that's why with issue 2, I
- 10:29took the big risk on backing away from the main characters to
- 10:32introduce like the who's going to be basically the narrator
- 10:35through the rest of the book. Because I wanted to a take you
- 10:40out of the action and, and make you feel for in this world for a
- 10:46little bit with how you know when they're talking about what
- 10:50happens in issue 2 and then give you that reward at the end with
- 10:54the actual zombies at the comic book convention.
- 10:58That kind of jump started that character's journey in this
- 11:02world. And it it kind of filled out, I
- 11:04think a lot more than I even intended to do for the world
- 11:08with that second issue, because it was more just introducing
- 11:10him. And then I realized after it was
- 11:12done, I was like, wow, I did a lot of world building in there.
- 11:17Good job like. That's is like, that is
- 11:21something be very, very proud of yourself 'cause I'm always so
- 11:24impressed by people who can create something from like,
- 11:27nothing. Because it takes such a detailed
- 11:29mind to create an entire world just from one idea.
- 11:32When you were coming up with the idea, where did you start first?
- 11:35Was it the character? Was it the story?
- 11:37It was definitely. So actually it's kind of both.
- 11:41I, it was the story that initially drew me to, to make
- 11:44the, the, the, the, the story itself is what drew me to create
- 11:48the title. But I knew the second I started
- 11:51writing it that it was going to have characters that don't
- 11:55normally get their time of day in horror, especially in when
- 11:59you look at a horror movie, comic book, whatever, 9 times
- 12:02out of 10, if there's a short short male character, he's the
- 12:05butt of the joke. He, you know, he's the the Comic
- 12:08Relief or someone who get, just gets killed off real easily or
- 12:12and then we look at the other main character, an attractive
- 12:16woman. In most horror, they're probably
- 12:18just there to look pretty and die.
- 12:20Well, instead I, I knew immediately from the get go that
- 12:23I was going to make my 2 main characters though that those
- 12:26archetypes 'cause they don't get, you don't see that
- 12:29represented in the especially, especially in the horror genre.
- 12:33It's always the big tough guys that survive and it's the, you
- 12:36know, the big manly man. Well, there are other people
- 12:40that exist in this world just. Saying that is very true.
- 12:44There is the there's, to put it in Marvel terms for you folks,
- 12:49there's the Captain America's of the story.
- 12:51There's the Natasha Romanoffs of the story.
- 12:53And it's like, yeah, it's a classic trope, but I like the
- 12:57way you did it. I like that it was, first of
- 13:00all, I love that we know nothing about these people.
- 13:02I really like that because in my head I'm like thinking of this
- 13:04whole idea of them. And you don't know much about
- 13:08him, but you do know that she is noticeably older than him,
- 13:12according to these awful people you're shooting, and that he's
- 13:16younger. He has such a chip on his
- 13:19shoulder, as he should. And I really like those kind of
- 13:22dynamics because it's just so unseen.
- 13:25So I think you're doing something very, very different
- 13:27here, especially with taking the reader out of the action and
- 13:32kind of going back to the beginning, like this is where
- 13:34we're at. This is where it started.
- 13:36And we're leading that way now. I think that was a really cool,
- 13:41kind of like a whiplash feeling like, OK, he's taking me all
- 13:44over this universe and I am here for it.
- 13:47Also, it is so nerdy that second issue and I love it.
- 13:51It's not like Comic Con. This this guy's on his podcast.
- 13:55It's just so much I'm like, am I him?
- 14:01Oh God, I I my artist. I hated doing this issue because
- 14:06I put so much nerdy stuff in the background that really doesn't
- 14:11matter. Like just because I want to
- 14:13tell. I want to have like I had a a
- 14:14wizard staff because I want him to that character later have
- 14:19that in a scene and 20 issues down the road.
- 14:22Like I I put like AI had names of like on on the boxes.
- 14:29I don't know if you caught this. I had the whiskey named after
- 14:35chip from Sons of that Chip. Damn the the Scott Scotsman.
- 14:41I can't remember his name all. Of a sudden oh.
- 14:43Chips, chips. There we go.
- 14:44Not chips, chips. So his last name is the name of
- 14:48the whiskey. And then I had it on the, the
- 14:52vodka was the, the Russian mob boss at the that they put Lova.
- 14:58I had his name as, as the, as the, the vodka, like just random
- 15:02little things like that that mean nothing.
- 15:05Like the, the very last page of issue 2 before the, the
- 15:09apocalypse, the convention stuff.
- 15:13You see, when we go back to the main characters, she's actually
- 15:16tuning the dial and I had the dial set to 10.
- 15:20It's a 1003, which is the year The Walking Dead came out
- 15:26October O3, like just random little tiny things like that for
- 15:30no other reason, just because it's nerdy like I or, or like
- 15:34the you know, the the brand that Costco has Kirkland.
- 15:38I I noticed I got that. One There we go OK, cool, I.
- 15:41Was like, hey, I said I get it, see I love these little things
- 15:45'cause like I said, it takes a very detailed mind.
- 15:47You could give me a million years and 20,000 chances.
- 15:51No, I would not be able to figure all of those out, but
- 15:54it's so fun because you do. It's kind of like you're getting
- 15:58to experience the story more than just reading it.
- 16:01It's very much like with the artwork, like with a letter or
- 16:04how they get to do sound effects.
- 16:05You're giving that reader such a bigger experience than
- 16:11originally intended. So I think it makes a huge
- 16:13difference having those little things I'm.
- 16:16Going to make sure I show this clip to to my my artist be like
- 16:19see, I told you I told you no, I, I I kid Martin does a lot of
- 16:24really great work, but he's he is not used to I mean neither am
- 16:29I. This is our first and second
- 16:30issues we've ever made of any comic ever.
- 16:32So so we, we're we're very new at this.
- 16:36So it's, it's I understand. But yeah, it's that second
- 16:41issue. I, I made sure to have, I wanted
- 16:44to make it almost an entire Easter egg to itself so that
- 16:48when we come back to that character, 5 issues down the
- 16:51road, you're going to go, wait a minute, that was an issue too.
- 16:55Oh, OK, I remember that. Awesome.
- 16:58Like, and, and stuff like that. I mean, that's the rewarding a,
- 17:02a, a reader for actually paying attention and reading.
- 17:05That's that's my goal. So I, if I just know, if you
- 17:10ever read any of my books, if I make you read a lot of stuff,
- 17:12just trust me, there's going to be some awesome stuff at the end
- 17:14there. There will be a payoff, I
- 17:16promise. We also think like, besides the
- 17:19reader getting that like excitement, like, oh, I know
- 17:21that it's also kind of makes you feel closer to the writer
- 17:25because you're like, I see what he did.
- 17:27I see what he planned. Now I see it come together and I
- 17:30figured that out for myself. So I think that's really, really
- 17:33cool of you. Oh.
- 17:34That's You cannot make me blush because these are some of the
- 17:39best compliments I've had and I'll be honest, I haven't had
- 17:42many people critique it negatively.
- 17:45Which is a which is. They never will.
- 17:47They never. Will no, I've got a few people
- 17:50that absolutely would. Oh, yes, I, I have made kind of,
- 17:54I've kind of made deals with like Yessi, for instance.
- 17:57I, he, he knows if it's not good, you better tell me, 'cause
- 18:02I trust you more than I trust most people.
- 18:05So if you're not going to at least be honest with me.
- 18:07If it's something's bad, then no one's ever going to be honest.
- 18:11I keep putting out crap and I don't want to do that.
- 18:14Like there was actually so in in issue 2 when JJ, this character
- 18:18is, is doing his like big speech at the end and we have the
- 18:23wavelengths on the on the panel to breaking up the panels while
- 18:27he's talking. So you see that the multiple
- 18:28people are hearing the same thing.
- 18:31And he actually gave us a note when I had him read it, the,
- 18:35there was a little X like white lines that for the actual line
- 18:39breaks that he was like, you got to take those out, black those
- 18:42out. So the way and the, it made the
- 18:44wave feel fuller. I, I didn't, I didn't see that.
- 18:49So the fact that he was like, listen, you need to fix that.
- 18:53I'm like, oh, you're right, hold on.
- 18:56And I literally went right to him, like, we need to fix this
- 18:58and did this. And 2nd.
- 19:00I saw it. I was like, yeah, he was
- 19:01absolutely right. He was absolutely right.
- 19:03And I, I, there's a couple other people that I know 'cause
- 19:06they've, they've given me criticisms before, 'cause my,
- 19:09the 1st time I ever showed this book off to anyone, I had the
- 19:12ashcan done at Megacon. It was probably about five years
- 19:16ago. And I showed it to a whole bunch
- 19:18of people and they're like, oh, the story's cool, the arts
- 19:20awesome, but the lettering sucks.
- 19:24It, it, it's not good. Like we, we, we can barely read
- 19:27it because of the lettering and like, oh wow.
- 19:31And I'm so glad they did because I then went and found a letterer
- 19:36and he knocked it out the park. So I, I, anyone, whoever reads
- 19:40my stuff, whether you're a fan, a friend or whatever, please be
- 19:43honest with me. If you didn't like it, tell me
- 19:45why. So maybe I can make it better
- 19:47next time. Like I, I, I am a short Jewish
- 19:50man from the Bronx. I have very thick skin.
- 19:52I went to public school in the Bronx.
- 19:54They used me as the basketball. OK.
- 19:56I, I, I have very thick skin. So if you want to, if you got
- 20:00some a real genuine criticism, please send it my way because I
- 20:04will accept it and try to make it better next time.
- 20:08So I actually meant because it was so good, but I really
- 20:14appreciate, I appreciate Nancy doing.
- 20:19I like having those friends because it's when you start
- 20:21something from nothing, your friends just want to pump you
- 20:23up. They want to hype you.
- 20:24They want to be like what you're doing is amazing.
- 20:26You're meant to do this your whole life.
- 20:27And I've been there where I was like, please just tell me where
- 20:30I can change. I need constructive criticism.
- 20:33There's no way this is 100% perfect.
- 20:36Someone hurt my feelings and they they just, there was one
- 20:39person, one time that said, I think on your podcast, your
- 20:43music is too loud. And I was like, I could have
- 20:45kissed him. I could have worshipped him.
- 20:48I was like, thank you. I knew it's thank you.
- 20:50You're so nice. You know, I think the problem is
- 20:54that a lot of people can't accept criticism, even if it is
- 20:56constructive. So most people err on the side
- 21:00of caution and don't, you know, give that I think very much
- 21:04needed criticism 'cause like you said, nothing is perfect,
- 21:08period. Stop and end of statement.
- 21:10There's no discussion, nothing is perfect.
- 21:12So yeah, I, I, I relish and really appreciate people who
- 21:16have the audacity to be genuine and honest, even if it might
- 21:20hurt my feelings. 'Cause we do need that to evolve
- 21:24and get better as human beings at what we want to do.
- 21:26How are you ever going to get to where you want to be if you're
- 21:28just sitting in the same stagnant space?
- 21:31Exactly. No.
- 21:32Agreed 100%. Yeah.
- 21:34So do you have any other stories planned for the future and if
- 21:38so, are they all monster related or are you going to make a huge
- 21:42left turn into something different?
- 21:45So this is going to be my main focus for a while 'cause I, I
- 21:49want this to last quite a few issues.
- 21:51I'm, I'm aiming for at least 100.
- 21:53So I, I will admit that for a while it will just be this
- 21:58'cause that just has to be my main focus for a while.
- 22:00But no, I I have actually about four or five other books that I
- 22:04have started like the the I I call the pre production process
- 22:08where I come up with the idea and then just kind of search
- 22:11pitch it to myself. Like for instance I I want to do
- 22:16a medieval like Game of Thrones style story based on Dragons
- 22:22from different parts of the world.
- 22:23OK, when you do that, come back here 'cause I like, I freaking
- 22:28love that stuff. I made this.
- 22:30That's awesome. I love Dragons.
- 22:32I love it all. So when you you're coming back
- 22:34here for that. Absolutely no, absolutely for
- 22:36that one like I would notice that there's this like Dragons
- 22:38in like lore across all over the world.
- 22:41So like my idea and the only reason why I haven't really
- 22:43gotten further on that is because I haven't finished
- 22:45enough research for it because I want to like tailor it to like
- 22:49how there's an Asian style of of dragon.
- 22:52There is, you know, the the South American style of Dragons
- 22:57that are so all over the world, they have different dragon
- 23:00mythology and I want to like kind of turn that into like a
- 23:03real thing, as if it if the legends and the stories were
- 23:07real. That's kind of like where I'm
- 23:09going with that. I also have an idea for this
- 23:12story where so you know how the everyone says all dogs go to
- 23:15heaven? Yeah.
- 23:17So you notice how you ever see a dog when they're sleeping?
- 23:20They're dreaming, they're running and barking.
- 23:23So I have this idea to do a story where when they go to
- 23:26sleep, they actually go to a different realm and they have to
- 23:29fight their way back to wake up. So every time when you wake them
- 23:34up, they're always like, Oh my God, oh, hi, dad.
- 23:37It's because they're like, Oh my God, I'm actually back in the
- 23:39real world. OK, OK, cool.
- 23:42And then I want to have that be a realm and tell a story from
- 23:47that. So like each issue would be a
- 23:49different dog, different story, different a dream.
- 23:52Well, so there'll be 1 main dog that runs through all of them as
- 23:56the protector of that realm. But yes, that that that's almost
- 23:59exactly the idea I was having that's.
- 24:01Amazing. Oh yeah, no, I'm definitely this
- 24:03is horror is just so I, I started with horror basically
- 24:06because I feel that is the one area now where you can tell
- 24:11really bold stories and won't automatically receive hate.
- 24:17People let a lot more go in horror because it's horror.
- 24:21Like it's meant to be grotesque. It's meant to be scary, it's
- 24:24meant to be evil, you know, like you can touch on a lot more
- 24:28darker stuff in a horrors. That's why I started there.
- 24:31But no, I, I want, I want to write, I, I do stand up comedy.
- 24:34So like I, I want to do like a funny, funny comic as well.
- 24:38There's a lot of a lot of stuff that I'm I I have in the
- 24:41pipeline that it is they're, they're percolating.
- 24:44They're the percolating that they'll get there one day.
- 24:47What the what don't you do? Let's see.
- 24:53I don't like to go. I don't.
- 24:55Besides comic book conventions and Yankee games, I don't go
- 24:58outside. No, that's fair.
- 25:02That's good. I think that's.
- 25:03No, that's fine. My, my, my whole family has the
- 25:06travel bug. They go all over the place like
- 25:09my, my, my folks just got back from Australia a little while
- 25:11ago. My mom, my brother went to Tokyo
- 25:14and I'm just like, send pictures.
- 25:16I'm good. I'm I'm totally fine here in my
- 25:19apartment by myself with my dog. That's.
- 25:22Exactly the same. I'm going to San Diego next
- 25:25month and I have every day. I'm like, Oh my God, why am I
- 25:28going to do? Why am I going to leave my
- 25:29house? Why'd I do this?
- 25:31And like, I hate it if I had to go to a different town, like 1
- 25:36town over, it's not happening. We're not going there.
- 25:39I, I, I'm actually attending a as a guest attending a super con
- 25:43in Miami next month and I'm just like, it's only a couple hours
- 25:47away, but I don't want to go so. Much.
- 25:50My my my bed is so comfortable though.
- 25:54It's like comfy pants. People smell and it's like you
- 25:59got to put on a mask. You got to like, let's do this.
- 26:03We got to smile us our way through.
- 26:04Well, and you know, especially when you're appearing as like a,
- 26:07a guest or like a, a, a personality, whether you're
- 26:09going as, you know, even if you're going just as like press
- 26:14or anything like that, you got to put on the I'm professional,
- 26:17Hooray, I'm here and you know, and, and it's tiring.
- 26:22It's so much because at the end of the day, I always find myself
- 26:25like meaner after all that just because I've been holding it in
- 26:28like, like for San Diego, I'm going to San Diego Comic Con for
- 26:31press and I'm going to like, that's a few days at a time.
- 26:36And I was like, man, I'm going to have to like preemptively
- 26:38apologize to people because I'm going to be such an A hole after
- 26:42I know it because you're like putting up the front all day.
- 26:45You can't like someone says something stupid.
- 26:47You can't say that was dumb. You just kind of got to be like,
- 26:51I respect your decision. Sure, God bless you.
- 26:56I, I, I completely agree. It's it's, it's, you know it.
- 27:02It's not easy, but it is worth it.
- 27:05Like when when you look back, like I know, I know most of the
- 27:09like amazing things I think about that I've done, like I was
- 27:13at I had a my I had an exclusive at New York Comic Con.
- 27:17Like what? Like I'm sorry, that's not real.
- 27:22No, no, no, it is. It is like I and I had to suck
- 27:27it up, get on a plane, fly to New York, go, you know what I
- 27:30mean? I had to do all this stuff that
- 27:31I I I dreaded doing and did not enjoy doing like I when I was
- 27:36there. Sure, absolutely.
- 27:37I had a great time, but everything leading up to it,
- 27:40everything apps just like, Oh, my God, it, it's it, it it's
- 27:44very exhausting. But when you get to do things
- 27:47like go to San Diego Comic Con, go to New York City Comic Con.
- 27:49I mean, it's it's what we dreamed of as kids.
- 27:53And now we're complaining about doing it 'cause we have to get
- 27:56on. We have to put on adult clothes.
- 27:58What the heck? No, this is not fair.
- 28:00I did not sign up for this. You mean I have to leave my dog?
- 28:03Nope. Nope.
- 28:04Yeah. Second thought, second thought.
- 28:05I, I, I retire. I'm not doing it.
- 28:07I. I think it's exactly what you
- 28:09said. Like it is the dream.
- 28:11These are privileges that like I never thought I'd get.
- 28:14And but it's like leading up to it, I think there's a lot of
- 28:17anxiety going into it and there's a lot of, I don't know,
- 28:20I don't want to go to my comfort zone.
- 28:22For me. It's like, I don't want to leave
- 28:23my kids. What what if something happens?
- 28:25What if, what if they hate me? What, what if I come back?
- 28:29They don't know who I am. It's just so many little things.
- 28:31But then when you're there, you're like, fuck those kids.
- 28:35Don't even I'm not a mom today. Don't talk to me.
- 28:38My phone is off, thank you very much as soon.
- 28:42As you get there, you're like, this is what I was meant to be.
- 28:44I'm superstar. I'm amazing.
- 28:45Isn't, you know, that's, that's, that's a really weird feeling
- 28:50because I, I know like I, I and you can ask anyone who knows me
- 28:53on a personal level, I have a very hard time giving myself
- 28:56praise. I have a very hard time
- 28:58accepting praise. I've gotten much better at
- 29:00faking accepting it because I, I've been getting it a lot
- 29:04recently. So it's been, it's like, Oh my
- 29:07God, thank you so much. And then it's inside.
- 29:08I'm like, they're just saying that, you know, I, I hear that
- 29:11in the back of my head. But when you get to do that, the
- 29:17worst part is having to go back. Like going from, I was signing
- 29:24autographs all weekend at a comic book convention for the
- 29:27book I wrote. And then it's back to like,
- 29:29hello, this is Kyle, how can I help you?
- 29:30It's like, oh God, why can't it be like that all the time?
- 29:36But it, it's and the, and the reason why it's because you
- 29:39can't gauge the good without the bad.
- 29:41You can't, like you can't have light without dark.
- 29:44It's just you can't tell the difference.
- 29:46If everything's light, then then nothing's light.
- 29:48You know what I mean? Like, so it, it that, that
- 29:53duality is very important. And I think, you know, that's a
- 29:58good thing. That everything is great all the
- 30:00time. Have a fully functioning world
- 30:02without an apocalypse. Speaking of.
- 30:05Right, well, and and that's that's what here walks monsters
- 30:09all about. Which is what you guys should
- 30:12check out because if you are inspired, you're going to be
- 30:14super inspired by Here Walks Monsters.
- 30:17Listen, if, if I, you know what that'd be, That's something.
- 30:22I, I, I have never, no one's ever said that to me.
- 30:24I mean, I'm only two inches in, so why would they?
- 30:26But like anyone ever tells me, like I got into comic book books
- 30:30because of your book or I started writing a comic book
- 30:32because of your book. I would probably cry like full
- 30:37on, like, what did you say? Give me a minute.
- 30:44I'm sorry. Like I, I, I don't know how I
- 30:46would handle that because I, I've, I've actually said that to
- 30:48people and they've kind of give me, it's almost like the really
- 30:53me. Like I have a good friend, Jason
- 30:56Douglas. He's a comic book writer.
- 30:58He just is a regular teacher and he decided to write a book and
- 31:03it got Ringo nominated. And then his second book won a
- 31:06Ringo for best graphic novel last year.
- 31:10And like, I told him, I was like, you know, the reason why I
- 31:13started writing my comic was because I saw you and believed
- 31:16in myself. And he was like, what?
- 31:20Really? And I don't know if he just
- 31:24maybe didn't believe me or what, but yeah, he was kind of like
- 31:26taken aback. Like I, I just wrote a book.
- 31:29I'm I'm glad it did that I didn't.
- 31:30I didn't know that it could possibly inspire people.
- 31:33But if anyone ever told me that, I'd probably would cry.
- 31:37Yeah, definitely. Well, I think if you keep up the
- 31:40writing quality that I've seen so far, I mean, I think you're
- 31:43pretty much not far off from that.
- 31:46So you should get that cry face ready well.
- 31:51I'm ready for my close up, Mr. Naval.
- 31:53Do you know how like celebrities, they practice their
- 31:56cry face before like the Emmys or something?
- 32:00That's that's your mission now you're gonna every night in the
- 32:03mirror. I just need to see it like well
- 32:05thank. You.
- 32:07You love me. You really love me.
- 32:11Thank you. Thank you for this mysterious
- 32:12honor. Thank you.
- 32:16No, it it, listen, if I could get if, if, if I even get
- 32:19nominated for an award, even even though, and I'll be honest,
- 32:23I might, I think I might deserve it, but I, I, I always,
- 32:28especially since I'm self published, it comes with that
- 32:30stigma right off the bat, like, oh, it's self published because
- 32:34no one wanted to publish it. Well, that could be true.
- 32:38I'm not pitched it to anybody. I knew right from the jump that
- 32:42most publishers, unless you're an established big name, don't
- 32:46even want to hear about an ongoing series if it's not a
- 32:49mini series or or or or a graphic novel.
- 32:52They're just not interested because they don't want to
- 32:55approve something that's that far ongoing, which is completely
- 33:00understandable. So in, in my case, in, in, in
- 33:03some other, in in the sub publishers, it's not because no
- 33:06one else wanted to publish it. It's just that we described from
- 33:11the get go knew no one's going to have the same love and care
- 33:15for this story as I would. So I'm going to be the boss.
- 33:19I'm going to be the one who approves it.
- 33:20I'm be the one who has the final say, 'cause I know especially
- 33:25with this story, it's going to get dark.
- 33:28And I know there's going to be a lot of people that if I was
- 33:32sending it to a publisher, they'd be like, yeah, you're
- 33:36going to have to tone it down this issue.
- 33:38And I'm not going to do that. Because when, when a boy, when
- 33:41you boil down with this here walks monsters, it should feel
- 33:45like as if the zombie apocalypse happened to us, to our world,
- 33:49'cause it is a version of our world that is slightly
- 33:52different. So when you try to make
- 33:56something that realistic, I got to go off the deep end because
- 34:01people are will do that. Like if you, if you have like
- 34:05there, you really look at like these, there's so many like
- 34:08serial killers and mass murderers and all that.
- 34:11Now with society telling them how to act, imagine if society
- 34:15wasn't around. It's just going to be that much
- 34:18worse and that much depraved. And now, granted, I'm not going
- 34:20to make the entire story like that, but there will be some
- 34:24points that a publisher will go, yeah, I don't know if we're
- 34:29going to publish this issue. And I I I refuse to let that
- 34:32happen. There's also other things like
- 34:35like you said, you want to be your own boss, but they're I, I
- 34:37never look at someone and who says they're self published and
- 34:40think, oh, no one wanted it. I've never once in my life
- 34:43thought that. I see it more as like being your
- 34:45own boss have being in charge of your own characters, your own
- 34:48story. And it's like, why wouldn't you
- 34:52want to own everything you make, be in charge of this entire
- 34:57world you're creating? Because I mean, what's the point
- 35:00in making this comic something that comes from your soul, your
- 35:03passion, just for someone to tell you, I don't like that.
- 35:06No, I don't think it's going to do good.
- 35:08I think you should change it. Like first of all, who are you?
- 35:11Right. Well, I, I think a lot of people
- 35:14go with the publisher route because it's far easier when it
- 35:18comes to like when I tell you, I, every, every time I get to
- 35:22the point where I have to start doing all of the like business
- 35:26aspects of it, like sending it off to the printer, paying and,
- 35:29and getting everything sent to people and all that stuff.
- 35:32I, I always go, man, This is why people don't do this, because
- 35:35it's so much work. And, and a lot of times I, I, I,
- 35:40that's usually when I'm always like, you know what, I'm going
- 35:43to find a publisher. That's it.
- 35:44I'm not doing this for issue 3. No, I'm going to get someone
- 35:47else to do all this extra work. But in the end, I, I again, I,
- 35:51it comes to boils down to besides the fact that no one
- 35:55wants to do an ongoing, it's I just know that there's the story
- 35:58I want to tell shouldn't be compromised because it might
- 36:02ruffle some people's feathers because it will.
- 36:05And and that that's kind of the point.
- 36:07Yeah, you're supposed to be moved by art It.
- 36:11It's supposed to have some kind of impact on you, whether it's
- 36:15offensive or defensive or something that inspires you, it
- 36:19still has some kind of reaction. No, I couldn't have said that
- 36:23better if I tried. That's beautiful.
- 36:28So do you think at some point this is going to be the Kyle
- 36:33universe? Like we have the Marvel
- 36:36Cinematic Universe, we have the DC Universe and whatever
- 36:40universe we're in there? Well, we have the Kyle universe
- 36:43with a whole bunch of stories. One. 100% I I the my my biggest
- 36:47issue is I can't come up with a a title for it.
- 36:51Like the Kyle verse just doesn't have that that nice ring to it.
- 36:55But no, pretty much every, especially all the stories that
- 36:59I I told you that I was working on are all in a connecting
- 37:02universe. OK, yeah.
- 37:06Or even the Dragons. That's what like, my God, I
- 37:11could nerd out about dragon break all day.
- 37:13I think it's because the House of the Dragon was coming and I'm
- 37:15just like, just in deep, man. I'm in real deep.
- 37:20Listen, I, I, I definitely agree with you.
- 37:22I Dragons that it's just there. It's just, you don't have to
- 37:27explain it. It's Dragons, man.
- 37:30And there's like so much mystery with them because you don't know
- 37:33which is dinosaurs, which is dragon, because the word
- 37:35dinosaur was invented to like 19 O 4.
- 37:37And that's why the Bible says Dragons and not dinosaurs.
- 37:40And it's like there's just so much to go off.
- 37:42I need to calm down. I need to calm down.
- 37:45Oh yeah, yeah. Save that for when I come back,
- 37:48for when I actually write the, the the story.
- 37:51Might have to get you on it as an advisor.
- 37:55I might take you up on that. I don't know.
- 37:59It's summertime right now. My kid isn't in school.
- 38:01I have a lot going on so. My oh, listen, that that, that,
- 38:06that that's on the back burner still because like I said, I
- 38:07haven't done enough research yet to even start writing that.
- 38:10Story. Oh I know, I'm saying like my
- 38:13decision making skills are not it.
- 38:16They are. They are biased.
- 38:20That listen, it could be worse. It could be.
- 38:22It very well could be. Because at least you know they
- 38:25might be biased now, but you at least have a head on your
- 38:27shoulders to realize that some people will be biased and does
- 38:30not even realize it. So I've seen it.
- 38:33Did you really? Really.
- 38:36I think your life should be ATV show.
- 38:38You're just using fortune cookies as your North star.
- 38:41My Lord, have mercy. So my psychic said this and I'm
- 38:45totally going to bet she said Mercury's in the retrograde so I
- 38:48should buy all of her stocks. If you don't get your Pluto's in
- 38:52a Gatorade mind out of here, I don't know what any of that
- 38:55mean. They just, I just, I don't know.
- 38:59I know I didn't sleep well. That's all I got for sleep.
- 39:04What? What is that?
- 39:05I think that's something I've been missing for about 25 years.
- 39:11It'll catch up with you someday. Yes it will, unfortunately.
- 39:17I don't know, this just might be who you are now.
- 39:19You just, you're just that guy doesn't sleep really.
- 39:22But I really like caffeine a lot.
- 39:25I do. Yeah, I know you do.
- 39:30But I, I limit myself, I, I make sure that I like if I have, I
- 39:33have one energy drink Max a day, not even always every day, But
- 39:37if I, if it's one day, no matter what, I, I will miss a deadline
- 39:43before I let my heart explode because I had two big energy
- 39:46drinks in one day. OK.
- 39:48They're just so Dang good too man.
- 39:51Nothing hits like an energy drink when you first open it.
- 39:54And I get it, it's hard, I'm trying it off of myself.
- 39:57But damn it dude. They keep making new flavors.
- 40:02Hey, I, I I wouldn't know anything about that.
- 40:07Look at this. If you're listening to the audio
- 40:11and not watching the video, you won't know that we were just
- 40:15bamboozled. Ladies and gentlemen, buy an
- 40:18energy drink drinker. I'll, I'll say it.
- 40:20Bamboozled. Bamboozled.
- 40:24So you're you said you're going to heroes Con.
- 40:26Is that which one it? Was no.
- 40:28I wish I was going to Heroes Con.
- 40:29That's actually happening, right?
- 40:31That happened. Last, that's the one happening
- 40:32yesterday. Yeah, it happened this past
- 40:33weekend. No, it's Miami Super Con.
- 40:36My super con. That's what it.
- 40:38Was July 11th through the 12th. Great.
- 40:41So are you going there with your comics?
- 40:43Yes, actually we I'm going to be at the three O 5 comics and
- 40:47collectibles booth with a exclusive for issue 2.
- 40:52The one of the Co owners of three O 5 is an amazing artist
- 40:55named Tina Michelle and she's done covers before.
- 40:59You know, she's actually has done 3 covers for me so far on
- 41:03different convention exclusives. But this one I was at Megacon
- 41:09because I had a Jimmy Tyndall exclusive that we were selling
- 41:12on on the eBay live platform on Megacon.
- 41:16So of course I'm there and I got this idea.
- 41:19I was like, oh, wait a minute. And I ran right to their booth
- 41:22and I was like, hey, I got an idea for a cover and I was like,
- 41:25so it's going to happen in Miami and there are three O 5 Miami
- 41:29comics. So how about we do something
- 41:32that is very Miami and has that that those Miami vice vibes to
- 41:39it. And I like we're going to put
- 41:41three O 5 right in the on the cover.
- 41:43She's like on the cover. I'm like yes, on the cover.
- 41:46And so she amazing cover when I tell you, like I regret not also
- 41:52doing a a foil version of this cover because the the colors are
- 41:55just so vibrant and it's just gorgeous.
- 41:58It's I there's a a a plastic Flamingo laying down in the
- 42:03foreground and there's just zombies running at at the the
- 42:06down Flamingo thinking it's food.
- 42:09And then you got like this big three O 5 Miami comics like
- 42:12storefront in the background with like the the you know, the
- 42:16the Corvette. I think it was a Corvette, but
- 42:17the the Miami Vice style car and everything.
- 42:20It's like it just has this Miami vibe to it and I'm so excited
- 42:24that we got to do that. It was approved and it's off the
- 42:28print. I actually got a picture from
- 42:30the print shop of a couple of the covers coming off of the
- 42:32printer and it sounds like, oh, that looks so good.
- 42:36Oh my God, I'm so excited. But yeah, so in, in next month,
- 42:40on the 11th through the 13th, you definitely want to come see.
- 42:45There's only going to be 50 copies.
- 42:46They're all numbered as well. So once they gone, they gone.
- 42:50But yeah, it's it's crazy. I got I'm going to be at a
- 42:55convention. Like Hayden Christensen is a
- 42:58guest at that that convention. Rosario Dawson is a guest of
- 43:02that convention. Yeah, I am.
- 43:05I guess that convention. Excuse me.
- 43:06No, that should not exist. Convictively, they're gonna be,
- 43:11I guess, the convention. You are, you guys are.
- 43:15It's you guys's. Thing we we are totally on the
- 43:18same level, 100%. I mean, not even.
- 43:23It's all the difference between you guys at this point.
- 43:26You celebrities just drive me nuts.
- 43:30Listen, I, I, I sometimes I wish I was a celebrity because it'd
- 43:33be a lot easier to sell comic books.
- 43:36Probably. Just say that there, there are a
- 43:38lot of actors, a lot of celebrities that are now getting
- 43:41into the comic book game because and, and good for them.
- 43:44If they've got a story they want to and someone wants to let them
- 43:46write it. By all means, do you Boo Boo.
- 43:48I'm I'm not throwing shade, but it is a lot easier to decide to
- 43:53write a comic book when you have 700,000 followers that you post
- 43:58one post, you have 80,000 buys. It's a little bit easier than
- 44:02someone like me who is doing it more for the love of the game
- 44:06than because, hey, we can make some money on this.
- 44:09So like, do you think Aman Vilani is going to have a
- 44:11Kickstarter? No.
- 44:14No, she's just going to go make it and they're going to say
- 44:17thank you, you're amazing, and then she's going to go home.
- 44:19Not for nothing, but if they did put it on Kickstarter they
- 44:22probably would make a crap ton of money.
- 44:24Like a whole bunch of. Money.
- 44:26A lot of money. Like a stupid amount of money if
- 44:30they. Well, like, look, look at look
- 44:31at the Exquisite Corpses card game.
- 44:35Like, I backed it. I'm not, I'm not judging anyone
- 44:40who did, but it's a card game for a comic book.
- 44:45Most of the time that never happens, first of all.
- 44:47And then because it is James Tynion, because it is Image
- 44:52Comics. And this, A Exquisite Corpse was
- 44:54amazing. I'm not saying it wasn't, but
- 44:56they raised so much money, like a stupid amount of money, which
- 45:02is great because that means anyone who backed it gets more
- 45:05goodies for free, which is I'm not complaining about.
- 45:08But it it it's it's if I tried, if I decided tomorrow here walks
- 45:11Monster can have a card game. It's not raising $250,000 no
- 45:15matter how good of a promotion I do.
- 45:18No, you have to sell your Beanie Babies to get that kind of
- 45:20money. In in the alternate, you know
- 45:23what I think in in here walks monsters, Beanie Babies are
- 45:25going to be the most prized possessions in the world, worth
- 45:27billions of dollars just because.
- 45:30My grandchildren's children will be able to retire off these off
- 45:34JJ the Beanie Baby this. Is mother how did we pull once
- 45:41oh son no no we sold our beanie babies at the at the height of
- 45:46beanie baby craze we never had to want for nothing the.
- 45:50Age of the Beanie Babies. Oh, man, when it comes to like
- 45:57stuff like that is I, I, I enjoy throwing stuff like that in here
- 46:01walks monsters because like I said, it's a world like ours,
- 46:03but not so like the zombie apocalypse started from a
- 46:08pandemic and I had, which is very similar to our world, what
- 46:11everyone thought, you know, COVID was going to be, Oh,
- 46:13everyone's going to be zombies. But in in my world, when that
- 46:17happened, a character looks a lot like Barack Obama was
- 46:21president. Well, there was no pandemic when
- 46:23Barack was president and in the real world.
- 46:26So it's like subtle similarities and subtle difference.
- 46:30Notice the Obama president 'cause I was like, wait a
- 46:33minute, Barack, what are you doing here?
- 46:35That was very, very intentional because I wanted to show from
- 46:38the very beginning like this is like our world, but it's not.
- 46:43It's also like just slightly off because I was like, this was not
- 46:46your party, Barack, what are you?
- 46:49You were not invited. Hey, well, I mean a lot, I don't
- 46:56even think a lot of people even like realize some of the those
- 46:59kind of overlays that I put in there to show the differences.
- 47:04But hey, if, if it keeps me from getting sued because it's not
- 47:09the real world and no one can mistake it for the real world
- 47:13because that's basically what the the laws say.
- 47:16As long as you, you know, no one can take this as a a factual
- 47:21real thing, then it's it's in parity and you're, you're,
- 47:25you're free to go. So we'll see there's.
- 47:28Going to be some people that are like, it's not Barack.
- 47:31He's white like the comics in black and white.
- 47:35What are you doing? Oh my God, I didn't even think
- 47:38of that. That's hilarious.
- 47:42Well, that's when I saw him. I was like, nice try Kyle.
- 47:48And then in my head I'm like, well, they can't sit.
- 47:50He's he's white. I mean, like and Obama's dope.
- 47:55So I'm like really well. Now I got to I got to remember
- 47:59that that we didn't we didn't actually like change the color
- 48:02of his skin. So when if he if I had my plan
- 48:05with my maybe he shows up again later and I got to make sure I
- 48:09make it right. Maybe there, maybe he's under a
- 48:11shadow then, you know, like he just gets.
- 48:14Just horrible. Lighter until his final form
- 48:17comes out and it's like, Oh my God, it's it's, it's the black
- 48:19president. It's the it's the president.
- 48:21Oh my God, he made it. This is his evolution.
- 48:25We finally get to see it. That's great.
- 48:28Could be worse. That's always one of my my
- 48:32favorite answers. Could be worse.
- 48:34I don't, I say it too much because at some point my
- 48:38husband's like this wasn't even that big of a deal.
- 48:41Like what? They were just out of the sauce
- 48:45you wanted. Like, are you OK?
- 48:47I mean, it could be worse, you say.
- 48:49I guess they could be out of both sauces I mean.
- 48:56That's my kind of answer too. Exactly.
- 48:58It could be worse. They could have had both the
- 48:59sauces gone. Jeez, don't wish that kind of
- 49:02evil on me. He's just happy.
- 49:05I'm not saying this is going to ruin the tour.
- 49:07He's just, I, I know he's just happy.
- 49:10I'm not saying that anymore. He's not very Internet savvy, so
- 49:15he doesn't like get it. He's he doesn't get it.
- 49:17He's like, what? What tour?
- 49:21Are you on tour? You didn't tell me.
- 49:25A world tour and he just goes with it.
- 49:27At this point he's like I don't OK, I married.
- 49:33Her right and that's when I would hit him with the could be
- 49:35worse. Could be worse, they've just not
- 49:38married me. And where would you be now?
- 49:42Not entertained. Exactly.
- 49:44I provide that for free. Are you not entertained?
- 49:48Are you not entertained? This is easily like one of the
- 49:51funnest recordings I've had in so long.
- 49:54I can't even under like I cannot even tell you.
- 49:56This is so fun. Well, I listen, I, I, I love, I,
- 50:00I, I'm, I'm normally on the other side.
