- 0:06Speaker 1: In the nineteen seventies, people across North America were carrying
- 0:11Speaker 1: a heavy burden. A recession was in full swing, which
- 0:15Speaker 1: left many people jobless, homeless, and with pent up emotions
- 0:20Speaker 1: without any means of an outlet. That was until a
- 0:24Speaker 1: baseball game was scheduled. This wasn't your average game, though.
- 0:29Speaker 1: This game put angry individuals into a packed stadium with
- 0:34Speaker 1: an almost endless supply of beer for basically free, with
- 0:41Speaker 1: nothing else to do but drink and vent. The crowd
- 0:45Speaker 1: quickly turned into a violent and angry mob that was
- 0:49Speaker 1: out of control.
- 0:52Speaker 2: My name's Ben and I'm Nicole, and you're listening to
- 0:56Speaker 2: Wicked and Grim, a true crime podcast. Warning.
- 1:01Speaker 1: The following podcast material more mature audience listener discretion. I tea.
- 1:30Speaker 1: You've got tea and beer today? Yea double piston delicious.
- 1:34Speaker 1: My throat's really sore. I think I don't know. I
- 1:36Speaker 1: might be losing my voice.
- 1:38Speaker 2: You're talking too much. Maybe I better not be getting sick.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Just about as we're about to go on baking.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I know that would suck.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Well, I would be pissed.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Ta Fino. Although we are heading there to Tafino this
- 1:50Speaker 1: coming week, we are going to have an episode. But
- 1:53Speaker 1: even if I'm sick, I'm going to just sleep the
- 1:55Speaker 1: whole time. And that sounds like a great vacation to
- 1:57Speaker 1: be anyways, So.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I know, we are literally just talking at how we
- 2:00Speaker 2: have no expectations for this trip and like we're fine
- 2:03Speaker 2: with just chilling.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I think that's our first time we've ever had like
- 2:06Speaker 1: just zero expectations for a trip.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we're just both I think maybe a little tired
- 2:12Speaker 2: and just need some R and R. Yeah, and the
- 2:14Speaker 2: weather's gonna be pretty shitty while we're there, but you
- 2:16Speaker 2: know what, that's okay.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Tell me this doesn't sound amazing though, sitting in a
- 2:21Speaker 1: fucking cabin, walking dish in distance from the ocean in
- 2:25Speaker 1: the Pacific Northwest rainforest as rain is fucking pouring down,
- 2:29Speaker 1: snuggled up with your two huskies.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Well yeah, but my okay, it does sound nice. So
- 2:34Speaker 2: then my thought wet dogs lots of times aren't really
- 2:37Speaker 2: the best. But eh, whatever, we'll figure it out. Yeah,
- 2:40Speaker 2: it's gonna be great. It will be Oh and you
- 2:43Speaker 2: miss you missed something very important in that description.
- 2:46Speaker 1: What did I miss?
- 2:47Speaker 2: Eating taco fino?
- 2:48Speaker 1: Oh? Fuck you? Come on, if anyone ever goes to
- 2:51Speaker 1: Taco Fino into Fino. Get to check out the truck
- 2:53Speaker 1: because we have wicketting grim stickers on there and we're
- 2:55Speaker 1: gonna put another one on there.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I hope it's not like off season and they're not
- 2:58Speaker 2: open or something.
- 2:59Speaker 1: They better not be.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I know, I thought I would the other day flip
- 3:03Speaker 2: my shit, you would start a riot.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Yes, speaking of riot, there's that's kind of on topic
- 3:09Speaker 1: for today's theme.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But we're not there yet, no.
- 3:12Speaker 1: No, not quite. But one thing we did do because
- 3:15Speaker 1: speaking of the dogs. Backtracking a little bit here, we
- 3:18Speaker 1: did a vlog the other day for our patrons.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We did.
- 3:21Speaker 1: We talked to them, We're like, what sort of content
- 3:23Speaker 1: do you guys want a little bit more here, and
- 3:24Speaker 1: they're like, mostly we got vlogs, we want flogs the dog.
- 3:28Speaker 2: They basically just want to see more of the dogs.
- 3:30Speaker 2: No one really actually gives a shit about us. It's
- 3:33Speaker 2: just all about that.
- 3:34Speaker 1: It's true. So we've logged taking the dogs out and
- 3:37Speaker 1: doing some stuff. So yeah, we can expect more of
- 3:39Speaker 1: logs to come out on Patreon and hopefully soon enough
- 3:42Speaker 1: we'll be rolling out some more stuff on YouTube as well.
- 3:45Speaker 1: We got a lot of stuff coming out of the
- 3:47Speaker 1: Woodworks here in the next couple months, so keep tune,
- 3:51Speaker 1: stay tuned for that.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's gonna be exciting. I'm excited for it.
- 3:55Speaker 1: And speaking of Patreon, we got patrons to thank for
- 3:57Speaker 1: signing up this week.
- 3:58Speaker 2: We have quite a list. I'm excited we do.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Starting off for who signed up this week, We've got Lindsay.
- 4:04Speaker 1: We have Susan and I'm really good at butcher this
- 4:07Speaker 1: name because there's like all kinds of accents on it.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I think Lindsay was last week. Sorry I didn't.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Oh well Lindsay.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks again, Lindsay, you're the best.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Yeah, way to notify me.
- 4:17Speaker 2: You Sorry, I screw that up.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Nicole's job is usually to tell me who I need
- 4:21Speaker 1: to announce. She takes care of the list, and then
- 4:23Speaker 1: I announced it.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Okay, so I split it up. I've messed up once
- 4:26Speaker 2: in my life.
- 4:26Speaker 1: It's still messed up. No, you messed up twice. What
- 4:30Speaker 1: was the other time you married me?
- 4:33Speaker 2: No? That was my greatest my greatest choice.
- 4:36Speaker 1: Your greatest choice. Well, well you're earning some brownie points today. Anyways,
- 4:41Speaker 1: we digress. We have Susan, Susanne or Susan. Some people
- 4:45Speaker 1: pronounce it completely different ways, but Susan our Scold, our school,
- 4:53Speaker 1: our schoold is what I'm gonna go with, Okay, Susan
- 4:55Speaker 1: our Schold right on. We have Nicola Clark, Shannon Charlton
- 5:00Speaker 1: and John Kleelo, Diane Litwin, Kimberly Wandle Sarah with a J. Hewlett, No,
- 5:11Speaker 1: it's it's Jarrah. But they message us with like, yeah,
- 5:14Speaker 1: it's like Sarah with the J.
- 5:15Speaker 2: So so you're yeah, you're just gonna pronounce it that way, Sarah.
- 5:18Speaker 1: With the jet, Jarah, you are forever Sarah with the J.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm sorry. And Alfredo Mendina right on. Yeah, So, thank
- 5:26Speaker 1: you guys so much for signing it for Patreon. It
- 5:28Speaker 1: means a lot, even if you don't sign up for Patreon.
- 5:30Speaker 1: We we appreciate you here and that means lot.
- 5:33Speaker 2: We just love that you're here. We just love what
- 5:34Speaker 2: we do, you know, we just love everything about it.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Touche we do.
- 5:39Speaker 2: This case has me a bit intrigued here.
- 5:41Speaker 1: It's a good case. We've had it requested multiple times
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I was gonna look up who it was. I
- 5:46Speaker 1: think it might have been Mandy who's been requesting it
- 5:48Speaker 1: over on Patreon. I could be wrong, but it's been
- 5:51Speaker 1: requested multiple times, multiple multiple, multiple times. So we're going
- 5:57Speaker 1: to talk about it today.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And this is a new one for me.
- 5:59Speaker 1: I've never heard this case other than it being requested.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Oh shoot, sorry, Kiwi, that was really rude. Well, I
- 6:06Speaker 2: was bundle up in a blanket and then I got
- 6:08Speaker 2: too hot and I threw it on the coach. But
- 6:10Speaker 2: I didn't realize he was curled up there.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Wow wow you mean yeah, Well, talking about this case today, sorry, Kiwi.
- 6:18Speaker 1: He's just he's just like sauntering away all pissed off.
- 6:21Speaker 2: Yeah, he's mad at me. Now.
- 6:23Speaker 1: So this case today, we're talking about ten cent beer night.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You had to have a beer for this one.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I had to and I had to wait for the
- 6:33Speaker 1: right moment to open it.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Absolutely and it's.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Foaming, it's fuming. Fine, I got it.
- 6:38Speaker 2: There you go.
- 6:39Speaker 1: We're good. Okay. So this is ten cent beer night.
- 6:42Speaker 1: It's all happening at a baseball game. It's intense. So
- 6:46Speaker 1: let's get down. Let's talk about this. It's a wild ride.
- 6:50Speaker 1: During the nineteen sixties, Cleveland was a thriving industrial city
- 6:55Speaker 1: with a strong manufacturing sector, but however, by the nineteen seventies,
- 7:00Speaker 1: the city began to experience a decline in manufacturing, which
- 7:05Speaker 1: resulted in job losses and a decline in the city's
- 7:08Speaker 1: economic prosperity. So it's never cool.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's scary, just that feeling of uneasy. That's not
- 7:15Speaker 2: a great feeling.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Well, and a lot of people argue that we're technically
- 7:17Speaker 1: in a recession right now.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean the cost of everything is through
- 7:21Speaker 2: the roof.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Yeah, And I do remember the recession in what was
- 7:24Speaker 1: it like, two thousand and eight, back in the day,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Back in the day. I'm feeling old. Man. We've been
- 7:29Speaker 1: through a recession or two in my time. Sorry, I
- 7:34Speaker 1: just felt old there for a second. I remember those days.
- 7:38Speaker 1: I remember the recession, the great two thousand and eight depression. Recession,
- 7:42Speaker 1: not depression.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Do you see. I don't know. I block things out though.
- 7:47Speaker 2: My memory is not the best.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Wow. All I know is going through this sort of thing.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's not easy. And a lot of people, no, it's
- 7:52Speaker 1: very stressful. It affects everyone differently. Yeah, but it's super
- 7:56Speaker 1: stressful for sure. So during this time, in fact, nineteen
- 8:00Speaker 1: seventy four, particularly Cleveland was hit hard by this economic recession.
- 8:06Speaker 1: It affected the entire United States minu but we're talking
- 8:09Speaker 1: about Cleveland here specifically. Now, the city's unemployment rate rose
- 8:13Speaker 1: to over ten percent.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Yeah, as around six hundred factories shut their doors. Holy shit,
- 8:23Speaker 1: that's a lot of jobs.
- 8:25Speaker 2: That is a lot of jobs.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Six hundred factories.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. Yeah, that's very high.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Oh that's massive. Yeah, one out of ten people job.
- 8:38Speaker 1: And there was a severe decline in this steel industry, particularly,
- 8:43Speaker 1: there was an energy crisis, high inflation rates. The population
- 8:47Speaker 1: also began to decline as many people left the city
- 8:50Speaker 1: in search of better job opportunities elsewhere. The city was
- 8:54Speaker 1: in shambles as everything basically seemed to burn to the
- 8:58Speaker 1: ground around them. Ratively, of course, but as well literally.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The Cuyahoga River had become heavily polluted with all the
- 9:11Speaker 1: industrial waste and sewage, which created a very toxic and
- 9:16Speaker 1: flammable environment, brutal. The river had caught fire several times
- 9:22Speaker 1: in the past, but specifically the nineteen sixty nine fire
- 9:27Speaker 1: was particularly significant because it received national media attention. There's
- 9:32Speaker 1: a little bit more detail on that, but I'm not
- 9:34Speaker 1: going to talk too much on it. But the fire
- 9:35Speaker 1: did start on June twenty second, nineteen sixty nine, when
- 9:39Speaker 1: sparks from a passing train actually ignited to oil and
- 9:42Speaker 1: debris floating on the surface of the river, which the
- 9:46Speaker 1: flames quickly spread and caused damage to bridges, boats, other
- 9:49Speaker 1: structures along the river. So, needless to say, the early
- 9:53Speaker 1: seventies were not an enjoyable time, as many people were
- 9:56Speaker 1: left wondering how they were going to find a job
- 9:58Speaker 1: or even survive at this point. It caused many people
- 10:01Speaker 1: to turn to substance use, such as drugs or alcohol,
- 10:04Speaker 1: to try and forget whatever harsh realities they were facing
- 10:07Speaker 1: at the time. Brutal, so not fun.
- 10:11Speaker 2: That's terrifying too. Like the visual of a river catching fire.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and there's images of this. You can google
- 10:18Speaker 1: it and it's just going to have to. It's just
- 10:20Speaker 1: out in the middle of the water and it's just
- 10:22Speaker 1: flames fucking shooting high.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's wild. It's insane. You should look it up.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Well I will. And I'm very glad that we've changed
- 10:31Speaker 2: things because like the fish and stuff living in that.
- 10:33Speaker 1: Poor river right Oh, I can't imagine.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Yeah, like that can't be good.
- 10:38Speaker 1: No, here, there's images of the fire right now there,
- 10:43Speaker 1: Like it's massive, it's terrifying.
- 10:46Speaker 2: That is terrifying if.
- 10:48Speaker 1: You're listening right now and you're not driving, and you're
- 10:52Speaker 1: not driving, yeah, quickly grab your phone, give it a
- 10:54Speaker 1: Google the Cuyahoga River fire.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And that's just crazy because you're already facing really
- 11:00Speaker 2: hard times and you're like, oh, nothing, nothing could get worse.
- 11:03Speaker 2: And I don't know, shit, is what is the sayings
- 11:06Speaker 2: where stuff always piles on?
- 11:08Speaker 1: You know, like stuff's piling on?
- 11:10Speaker 2: Is that the same? I don't know, like bad things
- 11:13Speaker 2: come in threes or it's just like, yeah, when you're
- 11:16Speaker 2: down on your luck, like lots of times more bad, Yeah, exactly.
- 11:20Speaker 2: And so and you're already down and literally the river
- 11:23Speaker 2: in your city fucking catches fire. Are you kidding me?
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah? So it's it's nuts. So yeah, rightfully. So people
- 11:30Speaker 1: were turning to substances. I mean not everyone, but it
- 11:33Speaker 1: was something people were doing.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Which is just gonna make things financially and everything worse.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah. And I mean, I don't get me wrong, I'm
- 11:40Speaker 1: sitting here drinking a beer. Obviously, I'm a strong advocate
- 11:43Speaker 1: for alcohol. If you're not aware, however, moderation is key.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Well, I just mostly meant if an addiction, say unfortunately
- 11:51Speaker 2: formed or something, and then you're already strapped and now
- 11:53Speaker 2: you're having to put more money and for your addiction, and.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Oh oh, this is just I just didn't want to say,
- 11:59Speaker 1: if you're drinking a beer and be hipocrite, being like
- 12:01Speaker 1: those filthy alcoholics, don't know what I mean.
- 12:03Speaker 2: No, no, not at all.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Okay, So I mean to touch on this just a
- 12:10Speaker 1: little bit. I do personally like to have a beer,
- 12:11Speaker 1: particularly after a nice, like long, stressful day, and millions
- 12:17Speaker 1: of other other people enjoy alcohol in a similar way,
- 12:19Speaker 1: for example, sitting back with a nice cold beer watching
- 12:21Speaker 1: a game, right, which I mean they go hand in
- 12:25Speaker 1: hand nowadays. In fact, it's sort of a pastime, even
- 12:29Speaker 1: just in modern day. That's just just normal. It's been
- 12:32Speaker 1: going on for decades, and big sporting events have actually
- 12:36Speaker 1: leagues have kind of made this a thing.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Well, I was just gonna say a lot of times too.
- 12:41Speaker 2: They have like big sponsors. Yeah, say like Molson Canada
- 12:45Speaker 2: or whatever is a sponsor of like the Vancouver Canucks.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Or you're literally like reading my mind, Oh serious, Oh yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 1: that's my next freaking sentence here.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Okay, that's weird.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Often have sponsorship deals with major brands like Budweiser, Cores
- 12:58Speaker 1: or Molson for example.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, I'm pretty smart.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Yeah you nailed it. Good job. I'm like, seriously, though,
- 13:05Speaker 1: if you are watching like a game, whether it's you know,
- 13:08Speaker 1: big league or little league, well maybe not little league,
- 13:11Speaker 1: small league, like not a professional league.
- 13:14Speaker 2: That's what I meant.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Children not children's league. That's not what I was meaning.
- 13:19Speaker 1: If you pay attention to these leagues, these games, when
- 13:21Speaker 1: you're watching TV during the games, you'll you'll see ads
- 13:24Speaker 1: run constantly during commercials. There's banners on the boards of
- 13:28Speaker 1: like arena, like hockey arena, baseball, all this sort of thing.
- 13:31Speaker 1: There's there's logos everywhere. Yeah, UFC. I think that they
- 13:35Speaker 1: had like the big beer logo in the middle of
- 13:37Speaker 1: their octagon for a long time. I don't know if
- 13:39Speaker 1: they still do, because I remember there was when brock Lessener,
- 13:42Speaker 1: remember back in the day, brock Lessener. I didn't like him, right, No,
- 13:47Speaker 1: not many people, okay, but yeah, there was a big
- 13:49Speaker 1: controversy because apparently Budweiser wasn't gonna, wasn't sponsoring him or
- 13:53Speaker 1: something like that. So after he won a match, he
- 13:57Speaker 1: was getting interviewed in the middle of the Octagon Live TV,
- 14:00Speaker 1: and he's basically like, yeah, fuck Budweiser. I'm gonna go
- 14:03Speaker 1: home and have a Coors Light. But Budweiser was actually
- 14:07Speaker 1: sponsoring UFC, just not him, so he got in major shit.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Yeah. But honestly, sometimes like even bad publicity, sometimes it's
- 14:18Speaker 2: still publicity. I can't even say that publicity. I can't
- 14:22Speaker 2: say it publicity. I'm just not even publicity. Oh my gosh.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But you know what I mean, even bad is sometimes good.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, for sure. And I mean you can even
- 14:32Speaker 1: go out and buy a case and oftentimes and it's like, oh,
- 14:34Speaker 1: it's got like the Seattle Seahawks logo on the case.
- 14:37Speaker 1: It's like they go hand in hand. Not just the
- 14:40Speaker 1: sporting event peddling the beer, but the beer is also
- 14:42Speaker 1: peddling the sports. Often, Yeah, because you go to your
- 14:45Speaker 1: local store if you are in Seattle, you'll see, oh,
- 14:48Speaker 1: Budweiser Seattle Seahawks. But if you go to a state
- 14:51Speaker 1: over you're gonna see them also advertising that team. It's yeah,
- 14:55Speaker 1: it's yeah, they just peddle it. It's a lucrative business,
- 14:57Speaker 1: especially when one includes the other and the fan. It
- 15:00Speaker 1: keeps going.
- 15:01Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So Anyways, we digress. Perhaps this was one of the
- 15:06Speaker 1: reasons why the management team of the Cleveland Indians baseball
- 15:10Speaker 1: team decided to start doing some promotional events involving beer
- 15:14Speaker 1: during these tough times in the seventies. Now, in our
- 15:18Speaker 1: current year nineteen seventy four, attendance at the Cleveland Indians
- 15:22Speaker 1: games had dropped. People weren't spending their money so frivolously
- 15:26Speaker 1: and had other matters in their life to attend to.
- 15:29Speaker 1: So management of the team decided to run a campaign
- 15:31Speaker 1: to help draw the crowd to the game. Now they
- 15:36Speaker 1: were on to something in the past that they had.
- 15:38Speaker 1: This they called nickel Beer Night in nineteen seventy one.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Okay, five cents, that's awesome.
- 15:44Speaker 1: For a beer, Yeah, stupid cheap. Crowds came out for
- 15:47Speaker 1: the game, spent a lot of money, had a lot
- 15:50Speaker 1: of drinks, and it helped revive the fan base for
- 15:52Speaker 1: the team. Now, with inflation as it was now three
- 15:55Speaker 1: years later in this recession, they couldn't do nickel Beer
- 15:58Speaker 1: Knight anymore, but they could do ten cent beer Night.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Which I still feel like is a steal of a.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Deal, especially when you look at it's today's equivalent in
- 16:08Speaker 1: dollar figures.
- 16:08Speaker 2: What is it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Take a guess. We're talking usd here, so US dollars,
- 16:13Speaker 1: so ten cents United States dollars. What do you think
- 16:16Speaker 1: that's equivalent to toys?
- 16:17Speaker 2: Oh? My goodness, I don't even know. I have absolutely
- 16:21Speaker 2: no idea.
- 16:22Speaker 1: A dollar ten cents in nineteen seventy four, okay, is
- 16:26Speaker 1: equivalent to sixty four cents today?
- 16:29Speaker 2: Oh wow? Us okay, a little lesson. I thought, Yeah,
- 16:33Speaker 2: that's still that today. That would be freaking amazing.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a cheap ass fucking beer.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I don't think you can get if you got a
- 16:39Speaker 2: beer for five bucks, that's a steal of a deal.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Now. I think if you go, well, if you're out,
- 16:46Speaker 1: we're talking Canadian dollars here though, mind.
- 16:48Speaker 2: You, okay, yeah, if you.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Go to a pub for five dollars a Canadian but yeah,
- 16:52Speaker 1: so yeah, yeah, beer and cheap I'll calling cheap.
- 16:55Speaker 2: No, it isn't.
- 16:57Speaker 1: And mind you, the beer that they were selling, though,
- 16:59Speaker 1: it wasn't exactly like was top quality beer. It wasn't
- 17:02Speaker 1: even very strong, but I mean it was still alcohol. Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 1: but when you pay sixty four cents equivalent for a beer,
- 17:09Speaker 1: I don't think anyone sit cares exactly. I don't think
- 17:11Speaker 1: they give a fuck, so regardless of the quality of
- 17:15Speaker 1: the beer. By doing this promotion, the baseball team management
- 17:18Speaker 1: had just accidentally set in motion an absolutely terrible situation
- 17:24Speaker 1: without even realizing it.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Okay, here they thought they were doing what they did
- 17:28Speaker 2: in previous years and yeah, yeah.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Well how it played out is a little bit different.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Let me explain. Ten cent Beer Night was set only
- 17:36Speaker 1: a week after the at the Cleveland Indians, which I
- 17:39Speaker 1: should clarify they have since renamed their name to Cleveland
- 17:42Speaker 1: Guardians and frankly so, yeah, yeah, but I'm going to
- 17:46Speaker 1: refer to them as the Cleveland Indians as what they
- 17:48Speaker 1: were at the time, so it's kind of historically accurate
- 17:51Speaker 1: in that way. But they are the Cleveland Guardians.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Okay, I was actually gonna ask, but I wasn't. I
- 17:56Speaker 2: thought that happened, but I wasn't certain.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Yeah. So they had went to Arlington Stadium when they
- 18:01Speaker 1: played the Texas Rangers. Now this is the very same
- 18:05Speaker 1: team that they were going to be playing against at
- 18:07Speaker 1: their big promotional event in one week's time, the ten
- 18:09Speaker 1: cent Speer Night. Right. Okay, so a week ago or sorry,
- 18:13Speaker 1: a week prior to they're doing this and a fight
- 18:17Speaker 1: had actually broken out on the field between both teams.
- 18:21Speaker 1: Players and coaches came bursting out of their dugouts to
- 18:24Speaker 1: come to their teammates defense, creating a huge ball brawl
- 18:28Speaker 1: on the pitchers mound that took quite a bit of
- 18:30Speaker 1: time to actually get under control. So both teams just
- 18:32Speaker 1: going nuts, a big brawl center field.
- 18:35Speaker 2: So there's already some tension a bruin.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Yeah. So by this time, both the teams are starting
- 18:41Speaker 1: to head back to the dugouts. Rangers fans had decided
- 18:44Speaker 1: to defend their team too. They began throwing food beer
- 18:49Speaker 1: at the Indians players and their coaches, hurling insults, taunting them,
- 18:53Speaker 1: so much so that the catcher Dave Duncan had to
- 18:56Speaker 1: restrain or had to be restrained, sorry, so that he
- 18:59Speaker 1: didn't go up to the stands and start fighting Rangers fans.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Really, Hey, yes, holy this is that's kind of getting
- 19:08Speaker 2: pretty out of control there. Oh for sure, I kind
- 19:11Speaker 2: of can understand it among the players, But then to
- 19:15Speaker 2: also get so fired up that you're going to go
- 19:17Speaker 2: into the stands, well, think of it, and nobody it
- 19:19Speaker 2: would not go well for that person either.
- 19:20Speaker 1: These people are throwing shit at you and like calling
- 19:23Speaker 1: you names and stuff, and you're just trying to mind
- 19:25Speaker 1: your own business and you're already on high tension.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Well I get it, but I mean one single person
- 19:30Speaker 2: going to the stands.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you're gonna get your ass.
- 19:32Speaker 2: You're gonna get like a little fucked up, just a little.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Like I would not advise that.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Yeah, So going to the stands or not. Though, Like,
- 19:39Speaker 1: tensions were super high. But the game did carry on
- 19:43Speaker 1: and the Rangers actually won three nothing Okay, But when
- 19:47Speaker 1: given the chance to ease the growing troubles between both teams,
- 19:51Speaker 1: the Rangers manager Billy Martin, sorry Billy Martin, did the
- 19:56Speaker 1: exact opposite. In an after game inn with a Cleveland reporter,
- 20:02Speaker 1: Billy Martin had a lot to say. So the reporter
- 20:06Speaker 1: asked Billy if he was going to take his armor
- 20:10Speaker 1: to the Cleveland game after the Rangers fans had treated
- 20:12Speaker 1: the Indian players so poorly, and so that would that
- 20:16Speaker 1: game that he's referring to is going to be the
- 20:17Speaker 1: ten cent beer Knight, right? Okay, so Billy replied, Nah,
- 20:21Speaker 1: they won't have enough fans there to worry about. Wow,
- 20:25Speaker 1: So implying going to their home stadium, there's not even
- 20:28Speaker 1: going to be enough people in their stands watching to
- 20:30Speaker 1: worry about it.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 20:32Speaker 1: So like you're you're you're putting some friction on this fire,
- 20:36Speaker 1: You're getting the flames.
- 20:37Speaker 2: Yeah, this seems like it's going to just be like
- 20:39Speaker 2: the perfect storm, isn't it.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah, he basically just let a fuse for dynamite.
- 20:45Speaker 1: Let's just say that, almost like he had issued them
- 20:49Speaker 1: a direct challenge in a way. So yeah, Indians management
- 20:53Speaker 1: and Cleveland Sports journalisted everything they could to make sure
- 20:56Speaker 1: that the stadium would be packed when the Rangers showed
- 20:59Speaker 1: up to play against the Indians. Again. Everything became about
- 21:04Speaker 1: fueling tensions between both the teams. We see that a
- 21:07Speaker 1: lot nowadays, specially since I already mentioned UFC, especially with fights, boxing,
- 21:12Speaker 1: all this sort of stuff, the trash talk that goes
- 21:14Speaker 1: into it, hyping up the fight, yeah right, really getting
- 21:17Speaker 1: emotions involved into it.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, that's what they did.
- 21:22Speaker 1: On the day of the game, The Plane Dealer, which
- 21:26Speaker 1: is one of the biggest newspapers in Cleveland, published a
- 21:30Speaker 1: cartoon of Chief Wahoo, which was the team mascot for
- 21:34Speaker 1: the Indians, wearing boxing gloves under the caption reading be
- 21:40Speaker 1: ready for Anything.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Oh this is just alarming. I'm as
- 21:48Speaker 2: you kind of I feel as I know what's going
- 21:51Speaker 2: to happen, but it's just unfolding. Oh in just a
- 21:56Speaker 2: cr it's cringey. This is the whole tales so far
- 22:00Speaker 2: as a little cringey that I know exactly where this
- 22:03Speaker 2: is going.
- 22:03Speaker 1: But I don't think anyone predicted it to end up
- 22:06Speaker 1: like this. I think it was just like trash talk.
- 22:08Speaker 1: They didn't expect any outcome.
- 22:10Speaker 2: Absolutely not. But then now hearing it, hearing it on Bold, it's.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Just like, wow, well, hindsight is one twenty.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah, after the math you like, or after the math matter,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you're just like, oh oh shit, yeah yeah I can
- 22:22Speaker 1: see that.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:24Speaker 1: It's no different than like you stubbing your toe as
- 22:26Speaker 1: you walk by the coffee table and you're like, fuck, yeah,
- 22:28Speaker 1: of course I'm walking real close to it. I'm gonna
- 22:30Speaker 1: smash it. So anyways, it was a match between new
- 22:34Speaker 1: rivals that have been built up as much as possible
- 22:37Speaker 1: basically just to sell tickets, with a stadium pact filled
- 22:40Speaker 1: with two sorry twenty five thousand, one hundred and thirty
- 22:45Speaker 1: four fans in the Cleveland Stadium that's a lot of
- 22:48Speaker 1: people that were twice the amount of people than they expected,
- 22:52Speaker 1: really two.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Times holy And was that mass capacity?
- 22:56Speaker 1: I don't know what the capacity was now.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Okay, so but probably I'm imagining pretty close.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Probably, And of course, mind you, beer was only ten
- 23:05Speaker 1: cents a cup.
- 23:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I just have to say, that's like a third
- 23:08Speaker 2: of our city was that this game?
- 23:10Speaker 1: Holy shit? Yeah, you're right.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Wow, that's a lot of people.
- 23:13Speaker 1: We live in a small city.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Is seventy five thousand considered small?
- 23:19Speaker 1: It's not a small town, but it's a small city.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Okay, there you go.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how I refer.
- 23:24Speaker 2: To it anyway, No, that makes sense. That's good.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So these fans were, well, they're really ready for anything
- 23:32Speaker 1: and ready to defend their team, and a little bit
- 23:35Speaker 1: of liquid courage went a long way, let's put that way, except,
- 23:38Speaker 1: of course, they had a little bit more than a
- 23:41Speaker 1: little bit to work with. As I mentioned, beer was
- 23:45Speaker 1: only ten cents a cup, but not only ten cents
- 23:50Speaker 1: a cup because purchases were limited to six cups at
- 23:54Speaker 1: a time per person, but there were no limit to
- 23:59Speaker 1: how many times someone could go back and make purchases
- 24:02Speaker 1: again during the game. So let me reiterate that you
- 24:07Speaker 1: could keep going back and getting six twelve fluid ounce
- 24:12Speaker 1: cups full of beer as many times as you want,
- 24:15Speaker 1: as frequent as you want. It was unlimited.
- 24:20Speaker 2: That's crazy. I feel like six alone is insane.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah. They did not limit how much beer you could drink.
- 24:29Speaker 1: They only limited how much beer you could carry.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Well, how, I mean, how could they have controlled that? Right?
- 24:36Speaker 2: In a sense, they probably should have been like, maybe, oh,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you can only take two cups or two beers.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Yeah, not sick exactly. And all you have to do
- 24:45Speaker 1: is be like, okay, present your ticket stub because I
- 24:49Speaker 1: mean you get tickets, but back then for sure. Yeah, yeah,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and we're going to punch a hole in it I
- 24:54Speaker 1: get for beer you buy.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it would have been ways to monitor it, yeah, easily,
- 25:01Speaker 2: but I think just limiting it from two to two
- 25:04Speaker 2: from six would really have helped. That's that is Yes, Sorry,
- 25:10Speaker 2: did I say backwards? I don't even know how you
- 25:12Speaker 2: go about carrying that. I maybe I had, Tracy.
- 25:14Speaker 1: I'm sure there was a lot of spirit spilt beer
- 25:17Speaker 1: even prior to people being inebriated. Yeah, so right away,
- 25:21Speaker 1: of course people began pounding back the cheap Bruce kis
- 25:24Speaker 1: as players took the field, and they took their seats,
- 25:28Speaker 1: multiple cups of beer in hand, and away we go.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Question, yes, how many times would you be going back?
- 25:36Speaker 2: Or should I ask you that at the.
- 25:37Speaker 1: End of this In hindsight, I wouldn't have gone to.
- 25:42Speaker 2: This game, okay. Oh, in hinds okay, okay.
- 25:47Speaker 1: I might have been going back a few times if
- 25:51Speaker 1: I was actually at this game and didn't know it
- 25:53Speaker 1: was going to turn into a brawl.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Cause I could just picture ten cents.
- 25:56Speaker 1: Fuck yeah, let's go. Sounds about right. I wouldn't have rioted, though,
- 26:03Speaker 1: I'm not that kind of person. No, I've been in
- 26:06Speaker 1: situations where yeah, shit's going south and I'm like, I'm
- 26:08Speaker 1: gonna sneak out the back fucking door.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:10Speaker 1: So anyways, we digress again. But the game began and
- 26:16Speaker 1: the Rangers found a lead once again, and tensions were
- 26:21Speaker 1: rising in the stadium. So when Cleveland player Leron Lee
- 26:27Speaker 1: hit a ball and it crashed into the stomach of
- 26:30Speaker 1: the Rangers pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, the blow was actually strong
- 26:34Speaker 1: enough that it knocked him down and he held onto
- 26:36Speaker 1: his mid section. He was in the right and when
- 26:39Speaker 1: this happened the Cleveland fans in the crowd began chanting
- 26:42Speaker 1: hit him again, hit him again, harder, harder.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Yeah, now that would really freaking hurt.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Oh, it was for sure. And this was pretty much
- 26:55Speaker 1: the point where you could see shit was about to
- 26:58Speaker 1: go dark and quick. Okay, So, as the game continued,
- 27:03Speaker 1: employees at the stadium struggled to keep up with the
- 27:05Speaker 1: demands of the cheap beer. Instead of cutting people off,
- 27:09Speaker 1: their decision was to make fans line up by the
- 27:12Speaker 1: outfield fence where they can get their cups filled directly
- 27:15Speaker 1: from the Stro Company beer trucks. So rather than going
- 27:19Speaker 1: to the concession, they decided to pull the trucks around
- 27:22Speaker 1: to the edge of the field and let people just
- 27:24Speaker 1: go directly to the trucks.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Wow.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Now, reportedly I couldn't find confirmation of this, but reportedly
- 27:32Speaker 1: there were only about two teenage girls who were tending
- 27:35Speaker 1: and serving the beer at the time, and they got
- 27:36Speaker 1: so overwhelmed they just left.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 27:40Speaker 1: And because of that, people were just grabbing beer as
- 27:43Speaker 1: they please from these freaking trucks.
- 27:45Speaker 2: So at this point they're rolling around in like twelve
- 27:47Speaker 2: At this point.
- 27:48Speaker 1: There's also stories of kegs tapped kegs being hauled into
- 27:52Speaker 1: the stands.
- 27:53Speaker 2: You're kidding again.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I cannot clarify if those are true stories, but those
- 28:00Speaker 1: stories are out there circular.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Oh that is just that is a scary picture.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Yeah. And a total estimate of sixty thousand cups of
- 28:11Speaker 1: beer were sold that night, My soul sold sold.
- 28:16Speaker 2: So not counting the ones that were just helping themselves
- 28:20Speaker 2: after the two left. If that's how If that's how
- 28:23Speaker 2: it went. Yeah, oh my goodness.
- 28:25Speaker 1: And mind you, there's twenty five thousand people in the stands,
- 28:27Speaker 1: and I'm sure not all of them are.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Drinking exactly yeap, Holy okay.
- 28:32Speaker 1: So now with a really easy and quick way to
- 28:35Speaker 1: get their refills, it didn't take long for the situation
- 28:38Speaker 1: in the stands to spill onto the field. First, a
- 28:42Speaker 1: woman ran out from the stands, flashed the crowd, and
- 28:46Speaker 1: then tried to kiss the umpire.
- 28:48Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Yeah, she didn't get very far, but her actions continue
- 28:53Speaker 1: to set the downhill tone for the game. So while
- 28:56Speaker 1: the players desperately tried to focus on the game, fans
- 28:59Speaker 1: start started playing a game of their own. One completely
- 29:03Speaker 1: naked man ran across the field and slid into second base.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Okay.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Only an inning after he had removed was removed
- 29:12Speaker 1: from the field, a father and son stood front row
- 29:15Speaker 1: of the crowd and pulled their pants down, moaning the fans.
- 29:19Speaker 2: Okay, I just have to say that I pictured you sliding.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Wow. Thanks.
- 29:24Speaker 2: I have no idea. That's why I'm laughing so hard,
- 29:28Speaker 2: because in my brain was you sliding.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Oh what do you think of me? You're just like, yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 1: you'd definitely be one of the drunk asshles, very highly
- 29:37Speaker 1: of you.
- 29:38Speaker 2: But for some reason, my brain just pictured you and
- 29:40Speaker 2: it was amazing.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Wow, thank you. I mean, you pictured naked me and
- 29:43Speaker 1: that was amazing.
- 29:44Speaker 2: So that's all you'll take it.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure. So yeah, when the fans weren't busy
- 29:49Speaker 1: entertaining each other, fans took out there growing frustrations on
- 29:53Speaker 1: the team they've been told were the enemy. Over this
- 29:56Speaker 1: entire past week, which was of course, the Texas Rangers,
- 30:00Speaker 1: fans were throwing food, empty drink bottles, cups, spat at
- 30:04Speaker 1: the Ranger players while they were on the field, But
- 30:07Speaker 1: in some ways those players were actually the lucky ones
- 30:11Speaker 1: because out in the field also meant that they were
- 30:13Speaker 1: further away from now the highly intoxicated and angry crowd.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, that couldn't be said the same with
- 30:19Speaker 1: their teammates and coaches sitting in the dugout. Right, Indians
- 30:24Speaker 1: fans taunted any of the Rangers players that they could
- 30:28Speaker 1: get at. They threw more food, trash, and even set
- 30:31Speaker 1: off fireworks inside the dugout why, putting everyone on edge. Yes,
- 30:36Speaker 1: you heard me right. People brought fireworks to the game,
- 30:41Speaker 1: lit them and aimed them into the dugout and shot
- 30:44Speaker 1: them into the dugout.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Okay, this almost seems like at this point the game
- 30:48Speaker 2: needs to be called off because like the safety of
- 30:52Speaker 2: the players is at risk here.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, big time definitely is.
- 30:56Speaker 2: Oh wow, Okay, this is unbelievable.
- 31:00Speaker 1: Do you know how many innings are in a baseball game?
- 31:03Speaker 2: Nine?
- 31:04Speaker 1: I think so, I asked, because I don't know.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Oh shit, I thought that was a test.
- 31:09Speaker 1: No, it was not a test. All I know is
- 31:11Speaker 1: that we're by the seventh inning. Now, I'm pretty sure
- 31:12Speaker 1: there is nine. By the seventh inning, anyone who wasn't
- 31:16Speaker 1: drunk and didn't have to be there, akay, like players
- 31:19Speaker 1: or staff mostly left the stadium for obvious reasons. Yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 1: and by the ninth inning, everything finally exploded. Despite the
- 31:29Speaker 1: constant distractions, the Indians had actually managed to even the
- 31:33Speaker 1: score and the game was currently a tie and even
- 31:36Speaker 1: looked like a potential win was on the horizon when
- 31:39Speaker 1: another Indian fan decided to storm the field. A nineteen
- 31:43Speaker 1: year old boy ran onto the field and tried to
- 31:45Speaker 1: steal a Ranger outfielder's hat. Oh man, This resulted in
- 31:49Speaker 1: a confrontation with a player ended up actually getting in
- 31:52Speaker 1: a bit of a tussle with him and he fell
- 31:53Speaker 1: to the ground, but it was otherwise unhurt. But this had
- 31:58Speaker 1: his teammates and his manner, Billy Martin, upset because they
- 32:02Speaker 1: couldn't see from the dugout. They couldn't see if he
- 32:05Speaker 1: was injured or not, and all they could see was
- 32:07Speaker 1: this player hit the ground and they thought he was
- 32:10Speaker 1: being attacked. Oh okay, when really it was just kind
- 32:13Speaker 1: of like a little quick tussle, yeah, and he felt
- 32:16Speaker 1: with the ground sort of thing, but the perception was
- 32:18Speaker 1: he was being attacked. So wanting to save this player,
- 32:22Speaker 1: Billy the team manager ordered the rest of the Ranger
- 32:24Speaker 1: team to charge the field and save him for his
- 32:28Speaker 1: own safety.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, maybe not. The best choice. But I can
- 32:33Speaker 2: also kind of understand how that, yeah, escalated to that.
- 32:38Speaker 1: So by this time, the Rangers had endured countless insults,
- 32:42Speaker 1: a mocking crowd throwing food and drinks at them, exploding
- 32:46Speaker 1: fireworks endangering their safety. To put it simply, the Rangers
- 32:51Speaker 1: had had enough. They stormed across the field, some of
- 32:55Speaker 1: them with bats in their hands, ready to save their teammates.
- 33:00Speaker 1: But all the Indians fans saw was the team that
- 33:04Speaker 1: most of them had come to hate at this point,
- 33:06Speaker 1: coming for the team that they had all gone there
- 33:09Speaker 1: that night to defend.
- 33:11Speaker 2: Oh, this is this is almost a little painful to
- 33:15Speaker 2: listen to here. Why I don't know, does anyone die
- 33:20Speaker 2: or I'm going to keep just listening here, But this
- 33:24Speaker 2: this is scary.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It's a scary situation.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I'm honestly terrified. If I was there, I think I
- 33:29Speaker 2: would be terrified. I would have left. Well, I don't know,
- 33:34Speaker 2: you don't know. You can't say unless you're in that situation. Yeah,
- 33:37Speaker 2: because sometimes you just like get in the moment, right,
- 33:40Speaker 2: and then then you don't know and you just follow
- 33:43Speaker 2: the crowd. Really, it takes a right it takes a
- 33:47Speaker 2: braver person to not follow the crowd than to just
- 33:50Speaker 2: follow the crowd, right, So.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, so this was the boiling point. All
- 33:57Speaker 1: the drinks, all chaos explode in this moment as Indians
- 34:01Speaker 1: fans swarmed the field, some of them with their own
- 34:06Speaker 1: actual weapons like knives, chains, and clubs, which means they
- 34:10Speaker 1: brought these to the game. Others created their own impromptu
- 34:15Speaker 1: weapons as they tore apart the stadium, using bits of plastic,
- 34:18Speaker 1: wiring and even steel chairs to attack the Texas Ranger players.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I am very concerned for the Texas Rangers safety right
- 34:27Speaker 2: now because they are incredibly outnumbered here.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they're against twenty five.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Thousand people and they're all just able to get onto
- 34:34Speaker 2: the field. Hey, same with them, the Empire or umpire
- 34:38Speaker 2: umpires like oh okay.
- 34:41Speaker 1: All staff like, I mean the stadium did have security guards,
- 34:43Speaker 1: for example, but they had a meager fifty individuals on
- 34:46Speaker 1: staff for securities. They were helpless to do anything against
- 34:50Speaker 1: twenty five thousand fucking people.
- 34:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well we're not, I mean, not all of them.
- 34:55Speaker 2: I'm sure we're going onto the field.
- 34:56Speaker 1: No, Like, sure, let's cut it in half. Some people
- 34:59Speaker 1: went home on altim are going in the field. Let's
- 35:01Speaker 1: say it's just twelve thousand, Okay, twelve thousand against a
- 35:07Speaker 1: baseball team.
- 35:07Speaker 2: That doesn't even help. No, it doesn't.
- 35:11Speaker 1: That actually almost makes it worse because it's like, yeah,
- 35:13Speaker 1: you can fit twelve thousand people on a field. You
- 35:15Speaker 1: can't tip fit twenty five, but you can fit twelve thousand.
- 35:17Speaker 2: Jeez.
- 35:18Speaker 1: So yeah. In another incredible twist to this story, when
- 35:24Speaker 1: the Indians manager ken As Prompte realized that the opposing
- 35:29Speaker 1: team's lives were possibly in danger, yeah, he ordered his
- 35:34Speaker 1: players to go defend them. Okay, yeah, he pitted the
- 35:38Speaker 1: Cleveland Indian players literally against their own fans in order
- 35:43Speaker 1: to save the Rangers players.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Oh see, this is just an unbelievably difficult situation though. Yeah, Like,
- 35:52Speaker 2: I mean, it's almost that seems like kind of a
- 35:54Speaker 2: good decision. Oh. I don't even know what to say.
- 35:58Speaker 2: This is so brutal, it's so it's wild.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Yeah, this is like the wild fucking West. It is
- 36:04Speaker 1: on a baseball It's insane. Yeah. So it was literally
- 36:09Speaker 1: both teams, baseball bats in hand, trying to defend themselves
- 36:13Speaker 1: for their own lives. Yeah. They're basically trying to fight
- 36:16Speaker 1: through the crowd get back to their clubhouses, which they
- 36:20Speaker 1: did manage to do.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Oh wow, Okay, I'm actually impressed.
- 36:23Speaker 1: They got there, They locked the doors and they barricaded
- 36:25Speaker 1: themselves inside. But outside on the field, the riot continued.
- 36:31Speaker 1: It kept going on until local police showed up about
- 36:33Speaker 1: twenty minutes or so later. They used pepper strip, pepper spray,
- 36:37Speaker 1: sorry batons, they managed to finally begin to subdue the crowd.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Wow.
- 36:42Speaker 1: Several players did receive injuries, nothing life threatening, but certainly
- 36:45Speaker 1: a frightening experience for everyone involved. One injury was to
- 36:49Speaker 1: the Rangers outfield fielder Mike Hargrove, who took a beer
- 36:53Speaker 1: bottle to the head.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Wow.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Yeah, a bit of a goose egg and a cut
- 36:56Speaker 1: in his head. So, and I'm sure there was a
- 36:59Speaker 1: lot more injury in the crowd as well, but I
- 37:02Speaker 1: don't have numbers for that. Unfortunately. I'm pretty sure they're
- 37:04Speaker 1: all just kind of minor injuries. So now they still
- 37:08Speaker 1: had to get out of these clubhouses once they were
- 37:10Speaker 1: barricaded in, and they had to try and get away
- 37:13Speaker 1: from the mob. They didn't want to get hurt, no
- 37:16Speaker 1: one else to get hurt. Yeah, they're trying to be
- 37:20Speaker 1: officially safe.
- 37:21Speaker 2: They had to also travel out of that city.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yep, that too.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I mean, gosh, I feel like when they got home
- 37:27Speaker 2: they would just kiss the ground that they literally.
- 37:29Speaker 1: Probably probably, but with the subdued crowd, the Indian players
- 37:35Speaker 1: escorted the Rangers through the crowd and back to their bus.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Flare ups of the riots still happening around them as
- 37:41Speaker 1: fans continue to fight with each other. During these final
- 37:44Speaker 1: moments of the riot, three bases were stolen from the
- 37:48Speaker 1: stadium and have never been seen again. Oh so three
- 37:52Speaker 1: people out there have a piece of this history sitting
- 37:54Speaker 1: in their house somewhere, or maybe discarded in the garbage,
- 37:57Speaker 1: who knows. But yeah, a little fun fact for you there.
- 38:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm surprised that they well, I mean not like
- 38:03Speaker 2: they could really come out for sale.
- 38:05Speaker 1: So yeah, what are you gonna do? Well, how are
- 38:07Speaker 1: you going to prove it? For one?
- 38:08Speaker 2: Yeah, so exactly.
- 38:11Speaker 1: But yeah, the police arrested nine people, which is clearly
- 38:14Speaker 1: not nearly enough, and while trying to conduct an interview
- 38:17Speaker 1: with some of the remaining fans, local sports writer Dan
- 38:20Speaker 1: Cooligan was punched twice in the face during these riots.
- 38:24Speaker 1: So but after the dust finally did settle, only one
- 38:28Speaker 1: real question did remain. Whose fault was it that this
- 38:31Speaker 1: had all spiraled out of control? Whose fault was it
- 38:34Speaker 1: that people's lives were put in danger trying to get
- 38:38Speaker 1: the root of the girl?
- 38:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I'm almost like, yeah, who would you
- 38:41Speaker 2: even blame for that?
- 38:42Speaker 1: Well? The Cleveland general manager Phil Saghee blamed the umpire
- 38:47Speaker 1: for losing control of the game and control of the crowd.
- 38:50Speaker 2: I don't know if I'm three with that.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I disagree wholeheartedly too.
- 38:53Speaker 2: They don't have that much power.
- 38:55Speaker 1: No, what's he going to do saying, you guys are
- 38:56Speaker 1: being in really less shut the game down. Yet that's
- 38:59Speaker 1: going to cause a riot?
- 39:00Speaker 2: Oh yeah?
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah. The umpire, whose name is Nestor chi Lac, disagreed.
- 39:07Speaker 1: He also began or So he'd also been attacked and
- 39:10Speaker 1: injured by the crowd, and speaking about the incident later,
- 39:13Speaker 1: he said that they'd all been quote uncontrollable beasts.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Yeah it sounds like that.
- 39:19Speaker 1: Yeah. Many people disagree with Phil, and the American League
- 39:23Speaker 1: president at the time, Lee McPhail was one of them, who,
- 39:28Speaker 1: in an interview later said, quote, there was no question
- 39:32Speaker 1: that beer played a part in the riot. You don't
- 39:36Speaker 1: fucking say.
- 39:38Speaker 2: Yeah, that person, they deserve a lot.
- 39:41Speaker 1: He deserves a fucking raise. Yeah, you know, Beer, I
- 39:44Speaker 1: think Beer was a part of this. Maybe just a
- 39:46Speaker 1: little bad, really, Bud.
- 39:48Speaker 2: But I would honestly say, I think it would be
- 39:51Speaker 2: the like the Cleveland team, the franchise or whatever. That's
- 39:57Speaker 2: who I would have to if I was to blame anyone.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, but who the manager Probably.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Just blame like the whole team, the whole franchise kind
- 40:08Speaker 2: of thing, and even the players, not the picture, the franchise,
- 40:11Speaker 2: the management team.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Yeah, if I don't, you guys should see Nicole's hand
- 40:17Speaker 1: just right now.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, trying to get something else.
- 40:20Speaker 1: He's almost doing like a two B or two not
- 40:21Speaker 1: to be gesture with her hand arcd way out.
- 40:24Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, you Yeah, It's hard to put a
- 40:28Speaker 2: blame on anyone, but them blaming the umpires, I think
- 40:33Speaker 2: is them just trying to put the blame off of them.
- 40:36Speaker 1: I think so too, Yes, But speaking of that umpire,
- 40:40Speaker 1: once he realized there was no way to get control
- 40:43Speaker 1: of the game and get it back on track, he
- 40:44Speaker 1: actually did declare the game as a forfeit to the Rangers. Okay, yeah,
- 40:49Speaker 1: so the Rangers did win this game forfeit from Cleveland. Really, Yeah,
- 40:52Speaker 1: it was another loss for the Cleveland Indians, and with
- 40:55Speaker 1: everything stemming from their idea to drive up attendance in
- 40:58Speaker 1: the game, basically saying, hey, let's just try and get
- 41:01Speaker 1: more numbers, give people some cheap ass beer, and bring
- 41:04Speaker 1: up tension in these hard times. Fantastic idea, right, Like
- 41:08Speaker 1: I said, like you said, pretty sure it's just the
- 41:10Speaker 1: management team.
- 41:11Speaker 2: Well, they're also probably looking to kind of make a
- 41:14Speaker 2: little bit more of a profit. Oh yeah, but after
- 41:17Speaker 2: the shit that went down, I'm sure they were at
- 41:19Speaker 2: a loss.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Well, how many people do you put this perspective? Guarantee
- 41:22Speaker 1: you that they're at a loss for the beer, right
- 41:25Speaker 1: for this.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Game, but the damage and everything, well.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Assuming the game is going to go the way they want, right,
- 41:31Speaker 1: they got a bunch of numbers, they're going to be
- 41:33Speaker 1: at a loss for the beer. But people are going
- 41:35Speaker 1: to have fun at this game. They're going to want
- 41:37Speaker 1: to come back to the next game, and next game
- 41:39Speaker 1: when we have beer at regular prices, they're going to
- 41:42Speaker 1: be more people in these seats buying more beer, and
- 41:44Speaker 1: then we'll make profit in the long run. Yeah, I
- 41:46Speaker 1: guess so that's probably their perspective. But like you say,
- 41:50Speaker 1: trying to make a profit. Trying to make a quick
- 41:51Speaker 1: buck turned into something they didn't think exactly happened. Anyways,
- 41:56Speaker 1: back to the Indians, it didn't look like their event
- 42:00Speaker 1: had been a success or that their reputations would stay intact.
- 42:04Speaker 1: But first impressions can be very deceiving, because the truth
- 42:09Speaker 1: is that a little over a month later, on July eighteenth,
- 42:13Speaker 1: the Cleveland Indians ran another ten cent Beer Night promotional event.
- 42:20Speaker 2: You're serious?
- 42:21Speaker 1: This time, nearly over forty two thousand fans showed up
- 42:26Speaker 1: to support their team, almost doubling the numbers that had
- 42:29Speaker 1: come out before. There did this again only a month later.
- 42:34Speaker 2: Are you like what?
- 42:36Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 42:37Speaker 2: That blows my fucking mind.
- 42:39Speaker 1: Same. I don't fucking understand it.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, Okay.
- 42:44Speaker 1: The risk you're running like it's it's nuts.
- 42:48Speaker 2: You wouldn't even think that they would have repaired the
- 42:50Speaker 2: damage I know the stadium.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Yeah, and clearly you're probably just like expecting the exact
- 42:56Speaker 1: same thing to happen, Like you're baffled, trust me, I
- 42:59Speaker 1: was to, But it looks like management had actually learned
- 43:02Speaker 1: a lesson from the ten cent beer Night previously. Okay,
- 43:06Speaker 1: this time fans could only buy two beer Okay, at
- 43:11Speaker 1: the reduced price for the entire game.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Okay, well I had that idea earlier.
- 43:14Speaker 1: You did. You did pretty smart, And this time the
- 43:17Speaker 1: event went off without ending in any potential life threatening riots. Wow,
- 43:22Speaker 1: it went off without a hitch. It was a great game.
- 43:24Speaker 1: People got to drink a couple of cheap beers, had
- 43:26Speaker 1: a good time. Yeah.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Wow, I was like holding my breath there. I was like,
- 43:31Speaker 2: what's round two gonna look like?
- 43:33Speaker 1: It went fantastic and everyone lived happily ever after.
- 43:37Speaker 2: I'm actually surprised as fuck.
- 43:40Speaker 1: That is the tale of ten cent beer night.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Huh.
- 43:43Speaker 1: That is a wild ride.
- 43:45Speaker 2: That is quite the tail while I was believable.
- 43:48Speaker 1: While I was talking to Nicole Boat doing this one
- 43:51Speaker 1: just prior to hitting record on this episode, she's mentioning
- 43:54Speaker 1: to me the Vancouver Riot. Was it twenty eleven?
- 43:57Speaker 2: Eleven? Yeah? I googled it really quick because we had
- 44:00Speaker 2: something kind of similar. It happened in BC, probably not
- 44:04Speaker 2: to the Yeah, a little different.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Different reasoning, but pretty much the same results. It wasn't
- 44:10Speaker 1: in a stadium, it was in the streets.
- 44:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 44:12Speaker 1: But if anyone is a hockey person in twenty eleven,
- 44:17Speaker 1: Vancouver Canucks We're playing Boston.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Bruins Stanley Cup Game Game seven.
- 44:22Speaker 1: Final game. The winner of this game wins the Stanley Cup.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Vancouver hadn't went when a Stanley cupp still hasn't in decades, sorry,
- 44:32Speaker 1: and tensions were super high. Vancouver is known to shit
- 44:37Speaker 1: the bed and that's exactly what they did. And they
- 44:40Speaker 1: lost the game brutally and people rioted in the city
- 44:45Speaker 1: streets ye Vancouver.
- 44:47Speaker 2: Yeah, Like basically there was so much vandalism to the
- 44:51Speaker 2: shops and the business is downtown around where like the
- 44:55Speaker 2: arena was yea, and I'm reading here was it says
- 45:00Speaker 2: in twenty fifteen, four years after the riot, please finish
- 45:03Speaker 2: their investigation and recommended the final charges against two suspects,
- 45:09Speaker 2: bringing the total to eight hundred and eighty seven charges
- 45:12Speaker 2: against three hundred and one people. Holy shit, that's a
- 45:16Speaker 2: lot of people.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Well, and the problem with that sort of thing is
- 45:19Speaker 1: nowadays people are riding in the streets. There's phone cameras
- 45:23Speaker 1: and video everywhere, and like.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Yeah, security cameras and everything. Yeah, so they were able
- 45:27Speaker 2: to kind of pinpoints and I.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Remember this, people were like taking selfies and posting it
- 45:31Speaker 1: to their Facebook and hashtagging shit on.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Instagram and they were breaking in and stealing shit from
- 45:36Speaker 2: stores and everything.
- 45:38Speaker 1: Yeah, and they're live and shit doing this.
- 45:40Speaker 2: And do you remember was that that iconic photo of
- 45:43Speaker 2: the two kissing in the street. Yeah, yes, there was
- 45:45Speaker 2: literally like a freaking riot going on behind them, like
- 45:49Speaker 2: fire and just like shit everywhere, debris all over the
- 45:51Speaker 2: road and everything. And then it didn't like the girl
- 45:54Speaker 2: fall or something, and then he helped her up and
- 45:56Speaker 2: then they had like a little bit of an embrace
- 45:58Speaker 2: or something like a kiss, and that got captured and
- 46:01Speaker 2: it was an unbelievable image.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I've heard stories of it was it was a setup image.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Even if it was or wasn't, it's still a fantastic image.
- 46:10Speaker 1: But yeah, I think the story goes that, yeah, she
- 46:12Speaker 1: had tripped or something like, they're perfectly safe, they're not
- 46:14Speaker 1: in danger. Yeah, but yeah, she had just like fallen
- 46:16Speaker 1: to the ground. They're kind of laughing, and yeah, he
- 46:18Speaker 1: kissed her. But it's it's wild because they're just amongst
- 46:21Speaker 1: like officers in riot and shit.
- 46:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's I forgot all about that image. That was
- 46:28Speaker 2: I own iconic blown away by that.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I think that is the image that represents that riot.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but I remember just being like a BC person
- 46:39Speaker 2: and I was just mortified.
- 46:41Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it was disgusting.
- 46:43Speaker 2: I was so embarrassed, not that image the riot, the
- 46:46Speaker 2: riot itself that it was just I.
- 46:48Speaker 1: Mean, it was it was the couple kissing public displays
- 46:51Speaker 1: of affection. You get a room.
- 46:53Speaker 2: People are like pretty passionate about their sports teams and everything,
- 46:56Speaker 2: and that's and that's a hobby and it consumes their
- 46:59Speaker 2: life and that's awesome. But just losing a game and
- 47:02Speaker 2: not winning the Stanley Cup, like we no one should
- 47:05Speaker 2: be acting like that afterwards.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I like dungeons and dragons, but I'm not about to
- 47:09Speaker 1: reach across the table and fucking deck my dungeon Master
- 47:12Speaker 1: because it died or something.
- 47:13Speaker 2: I mean, by all means be upset, like one hundred percent,
- 47:16Speaker 2: like oh that like be disappointed in shit, But you
- 47:18Speaker 2: don't need to be like vandalizing a shop that really
- 47:21Speaker 2: had nothing to do with it and everything.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So yeah, it's disappointing when things escalate that far.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Yeah, so so on and that is so and the
- 47:30Speaker 2: Vancouver one and this one that you just talked about,
- 47:32Speaker 2: it's surprising that no one really died in either of these.
- 47:36Speaker 1: There was no death in the Vancouver one. It's just
- 47:38Speaker 1: just like injuries.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and not even like a ton of I think
- 47:42Speaker 2: there was only one that was really bad, which it's amazing,
- 47:46Speaker 2: blows my mind that people didn't die.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but there were people getting stabbed in the Vancouver one.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Wasn't There wasn't there people who got stabbed.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I'm not sure.
- 47:54Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure there was people who like got like
- 47:55Speaker 1: minor stab injuries. Don't get me wrong, but I'm pretty
- 47:57Speaker 1: sure there were people who at least got stabbed. Oh yeah,
- 48:02Speaker 1: not a fun time. No, No, if there's a riot,
- 48:05Speaker 1: you can guarantee you will see me running the other way.
- 48:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and my pants will probably be wet with
- 48:12Speaker 1: brown streaks in the back with fear.
- 48:14Speaker 2: Hey yeah, yeah, I would want to run for the hills.
- 48:17Speaker 2: I mean yeah, lots even going to a hockey game now,
- 48:20Speaker 2: I feel like around that many people, I'm just like, no, nope,
- 48:24Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Nope.
- 48:28Speaker 2: For our vacation, We're literally going somewhere that at this
- 48:31Speaker 2: point is off season and there's hardly gonna be anyone there.
- 48:34Speaker 1: That's the time to go. You don't have stressful people
- 48:38Speaker 1: running around being like, oh my god, I need to
- 48:40Speaker 1: take a selfie, take a picture of me.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:43Speaker 1: So, although that will be us because we're gonna take
- 48:46Speaker 1: our cameras and we're gonna be taking.
- 48:47Speaker 2: Fucking oh yeah, I'll probably have to show my camera
- 48:50Speaker 2: all the dogs after it is gonna be a million
- 48:52Speaker 2: one photos of them.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Well, and you even told me you were gonna do
- 48:54Speaker 1: like a vlog or a reel or something of like
- 48:57Speaker 1: the dogs having this epic adventure to.
- 49:00Speaker 2: The dogs take on Tiffino.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so we are going to be those annoying tourists.
- 49:04Speaker 1: What are we talking about.
- 49:05Speaker 2: We'll be the only ones there.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone's going to be looking at us being like,
- 49:10Speaker 1: look at these fucking weirdos.
- 49:14Speaker 2: No, yeah, we'll fit in.
- 49:17Speaker 1: I don't know, we'll fit in. We are fucking weirdos.
- 49:19Speaker 1: Bud No, we are fucking weirdos, bud No. Yeah.
- 49:23Speaker 2: Anyway, good job.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Thank you. That was a fun episode. It was. It's
- 49:29Speaker 1: scary too, but a little less depressing than someone getting
- 49:32Speaker 1: murdered assaulted or murdered or kidnapped.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Or so or like, I don't know why this the
- 49:38Speaker 2: calleen one where Colleen Ritzer I was going to say
- 49:42Speaker 2: stan and the one where she was literally in the
- 49:44Speaker 2: box as a sex slave. Like God, some of the
- 49:47Speaker 2: cases out there are just brew like just awful.
- 49:50Speaker 1: It baffles me what humans are capable of.
- 49:53Speaker 2: It's kind of baffling.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Yes, and in incidences like these riots or anything, a
- 50:00Speaker 1: long mob mentality. It's wild to see. And we hate
- 50:05Speaker 1: to say it's not we're not capable of it, but
- 50:09Speaker 1: how many people took part in it. It happens around you.
- 50:12Speaker 1: People just join in, and there's people who talk about
- 50:16Speaker 1: it and say, you know what, Yeah, it's just like
- 50:18Speaker 1: following the crowd. It's weird.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you're kind of just living in the moments.
- 50:22Speaker 1: It's like a hive mind mindset. You just do it.
- 50:25Speaker 1: We're all capable of it, which is scary as fuck.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Yeah, well, especially too. I think alcohol would just escalate
- 50:34Speaker 2: that fan.
- 50:35Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not for me though, I'm a happy drunk.
- 50:37Speaker 1: There are happy drunks out there.
- 50:39Speaker 2: Yeah, but even happy, you're kind of just like you're
- 50:41Speaker 2: wanting part of something. They're like, yeah, like, whoa, I
- 50:45Speaker 2: kind of I don't know.
