- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37You don't pay a pastor to be a pastor.
- 0:39You don't pay them to do the work of the pastor.
- 0:42That's not why a pastor is paid. That's a hireling.
- 0:44That's a hireling. They're paid to do a job.
- 0:47That's a hireling. And the Bible says, Jesus even
- 0:49says himself that a hireling doesn't care for the sheep.
- 0:53So you don't even want a hireling.
- 0:54That's not what a pastor is paid for.
- 0:56A pastor is given support so that he can be free to be a
- 1:01pastor. That's what a true pastor is
- 1:04being paid for. What does it mean to be a true
- 1:06shepherd? In today's message, Pastor Lewis
- 1:09makes it clear you don't pay a pastor to do the job.
- 1:13You support him so he can freely be the shepherd God called him
- 1:18to be. If someone works for wages and
- 1:20flees when trouble comes because he truly doesn't care for the
- 1:25sheep, Jesus warned about that. A true pastor's heart is for the
- 1:29flock, not the paycheck. It's not payment for services,
- 1:34it's a partnership and ministry. How do you support your pastor
- 1:38so he can shepherd properly? Now?
- 1:40Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of First Timothy, chapter 5,
- 1:44with today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:47The widow was the one that would say, well, if they don't have
- 1:49anywhere to stay, I'll take them to my house.
- 1:51I got room, I got space. They'll take them in their house
- 1:54or other, you know, some of the other people that may travel
- 1:57with them, I'll give them somewhere to stay.
- 1:59Hospitality. They have a spirit of
- 2:00hospitality goes on. If she has washed the Saints
- 2:05feet. Now washing the feet is
- 2:07something that we don't typically do.
- 2:09That doesn't happen that much in the church.
- 2:11There are some churches now I want to say there are some
- 2:13churches that still do that. They will wash feet.
- 2:15They'll have what they call a foot washing ceremony, not sure
- 2:19what that looks like, but they do that and they'll wash feet.
- 2:22But what Paul's talking about here is being a humble servant,
- 2:27being able to do or be willing to do menial things, things that
- 2:31maybe other people wouldn't want to do or see themselves above
- 2:35doing it. Paul said, you know, this widow,
- 2:37a widow, a humble servant will do those kind of things.
- 2:41And then he goes on and he says, I love this one.
- 2:43If she has relieved the afflicted, this is a woman who
- 2:48is truly, truly filled with the spirit of mercy.
- 2:55If there's an affliction, she goes to help.
- 2:58If someone is afflicted, she goes to help.
- 3:00You know, I'm always struck talking to firefighters and
- 3:04police officers, those that are what they call the first
- 3:06responders, I'm always struck talking to them because I
- 3:10realized that things that they run to most people run away
- 3:15from. Like if it's a really bad fire,
- 3:19I'm not going to run to this fire, I'm going to run away from
- 3:23it. But the first responders,
- 3:25firefighters and people of that nature, they run to it.
- 3:29Police officers, if someone is out in the street, they're
- 3:31shooting, I'm going to hide. I'm going to find somewhere safe
- 3:34to hide. But there are people who serve
- 3:36in our, in our law enforcement that their, their first instinct
- 3:39is a run to it, run toward it to try to resolve the situation.
- 3:46And this is what happens with these widows where other people
- 3:50may not want to deal with someone else's affliction, to be
- 3:54inconvenienced by someone else's affliction.
- 3:57This woman who was a true widow and had the heart of mercy, she
- 4:02runs to these people. She runs to them to offer
- 4:05whatever relief that she can. Rather, it's relief because
- 4:09they've had some crisis in their life.
- 4:10May they lost a loved one. Maybe their their house burned
- 4:13down and they need things to help them.
- 4:16Rather somebody who just needs to be ministered to.
- 4:19Maybe someone who fell in sin and they're now dealing with
- 4:23adversity from that this person runs to them to offer relief,
- 4:28relief. And then it also goes on and
- 4:31says if she has diligently followed every good work, that
- 4:35just simply means that she has been very, very committed to
- 4:38serving in every good work. Now in verse 11 is when Paul
- 4:43makes a distinction now for those who should not be
- 4:46supported by the church. And in verse 11, he says, but
- 4:50refuse, do not give support to the younger widows for when they
- 4:57have become wanton, when they grow wanton against Christ, they
- 5:02desire to marry, having condemnation because they have
- 5:05cast off their first faith. Now let's walk through that.
- 5:10He refuses those young women because see, what can happen
- 5:13from time to time is that a woman who is younger, if she
- 5:17loses a husband at an early age, I mean, she is distraught.
- 5:21I mean, she's broken. I mean, really hurting.
- 5:24And at that particular time, you know, she may say, you know
- 5:27what, I'm not getting married again.
- 5:30I'm not getting mad anymore because I'm never going to meet
- 5:32another man like this in my life.
- 5:34So I'm just not going to get married again.
- 5:37I'm going to just give myself to the whore.
- 5:39I don't even want to get married again in those times.
- 5:42It's like a reaction. It's just a reaction.
- 5:45It's a, it's a very fleshy reaction.
- 5:47I mean, it's in the, you know, it's out of emotion, but they
- 5:50make that reaction. They say, I'm not going to get
- 5:52married. So they make that pledge.
- 5:53I'm not going to get married anymore.
- 5:54But then what may happen is that later on, they develop a
- 5:57friendship with someone of the opposite sex.
- 6:00And that ends up maybe there's some sparks that start flying.
- 6:03They get interested, you know, in each other and start seeing
- 6:06each other a little differently. Now all of a sudden, all those
- 6:10emotions that she had suppressed and those things that she
- 6:14thought had gone dormant, all those feelings start coming
- 6:17back, and all of a sudden her body starts to respond again and
- 6:23her mind starts to respond. She wants companionship again.
- 6:26So she decides that they're going to marry.
- 6:28Paul's not saying that it's a bad thing that a person marries.
- 6:32That's not a bad thing. In fact, like we said before,
- 6:34it's better to marry than to burn with lust.
- 6:37But what Paul is saying is that what happens with these widows,
- 6:40rather than to take them in as widows and have them make that
- 6:43pledge that they're going to give the rest of their life to
- 6:47God and not to anybody else, rather than to have them do
- 6:51that, just let them remarry. Just let them remarry so that
- 6:56they don't have to worry about that if they decide to.
- 6:58They don't have to make a pledge because what happens, as it says
- 7:01here in verse 12, having condemnation, that's self
- 7:05condemnation because they made this pledge and now they broke
- 7:08it. So it's like self condemnation
- 7:11for themselves because they cast off their first faith.
- 7:15And that first faith is really what it means is that their soul
- 7:19promise, their solemn promise. They made a solemn promise and
- 7:22now they're breaking it or they're retracting it, they're
- 7:25forsaking it. So Paul is saying rather than
- 7:28them doing that, let them marry. And then here in verse 13, it
- 7:32says, and besides, now this is the other part, the other
- 7:35warning that he had for Timothy about bringing these young women
- 7:38in when they're so young and taking care of them in the
- 7:42church, having them make these pledges, he said.
- 7:45And besides, they learn to be idle, wandering from house to
- 7:49house, and not only idle, but also gossips and busy bodies
- 7:54saying things which they are not.
- 7:57So they're not working. They're not working.
- 8:00They're going from house to house because they got all this
- 8:02time on their hands. They don't have a family, so
- 8:05they're going from house to house.
- 8:07They got all this time on their hands.
- 8:08And so now they may have started off with a conversation, may
- 8:11have been edifying, may have been a very spiritual
- 8:14conversations at first talking about Scripture.
- 8:17But then all of a sudden it starts to, you know, every
- 8:19conversation starts to deteriorate and it starts to get
- 8:22into gossip and talk about other carnal things and fleshy things.
- 8:25And they start to say things that they just shouldn't be
- 8:28saying. Getting in other people's
- 8:29business, using the cover up we need to pray for so and so.
- 8:32Did you hear what happened? You know, I mean, getting into
- 8:36all those kind of things and just sharing other people's
- 8:39business in ways that they need not to.
- 8:42And he's saying, look, rather than to do that.
- 8:44Verse 14. Therefore he says, I desire that
- 8:48the younger widows marry, bear children, manage the house and
- 8:52give no opportunity to the adversary to speak
- 8:55reproachfully. Paul says, look, if they're
- 8:57running around behind kids, they ain't got no time to be going
- 9:00busy bodying. You know, we got people here
- 9:02with kids. You know, you ain't got time to
- 9:04be busy body. And if you got kids, you running
- 9:07around behind them. They keep you busy.
- 9:11They keep you busy. You're pouring into their lives.
- 9:13And it's so important to listen. I don't ever want to minimize
- 9:17the significance and importance of being able to pour into a
- 9:21child's life. I don't ever want to minimize
- 9:24that. You know you are, regardless of
- 9:27what situation is, whether it's your children or whether it's
- 9:29someone else's children that for whatever time period you have
- 9:32responsibility for rather it's keeping them or you're teaching
- 9:35them or you're a mentor to them. They look up to you and they're
- 9:38spending time with you. There is such a blessing for you
- 9:42to be able to be a mentor and pour in spiritual things to
- 9:46young kids at a young age, to get them on the road of walking
- 9:51with the Lord at a young age and being example of a godly woman
- 9:58before young girls. That is valuable.
- 10:03It's valuable for men to be godly examples for young boys.
- 10:09We need that. And that's what God is talking
- 10:11about when He says multiply after yourselves, after your own
- 10:15kind. It's a blessing, it's an honor.
- 10:21So Paul says, look, as opposed to becoming busy bodies, as
- 10:24opposed to being tempted to go out and do ungodly things, go
- 10:27ahead and get married. Go ahead and get married.
- 10:31And then at the bottom of that, verse 15, it says for some have
- 10:34already turned aside after Satan because see what happens that if
- 10:37you are suppressing these things and you act like you don't want
- 10:40to get married, you start sneaking around.
- 10:42And what happens is that eventually you start opening
- 10:44yourself up to ungodly things, ungodly relationships, you know,
- 10:50so instead of getting married, you're moving in with somebody
- 10:52you know, and fornication. All these things are taking
- 10:55place that's just running after Satan.
- 10:57You're not even honoring the Lord at all anymore.
- 10:59And what you're doing in terms of relationships, not living as
- 11:02a widow, nor are you living as a godly woman.
- 11:06Paul says, for some have already turned aside after Satan.
- 11:09And then in verse 16, it says if any believing man or woman, he
- 11:13goes back and he repeats here what he talked about in verse 4
- 11:17and verse 8. That's how serious he is about
- 11:20that issue of people in their own homes taking care of their
- 11:25own family members who are widows.
- 11:27If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve
- 11:33them. Do not let the church be
- 11:36burdened. Why not that the church don't
- 11:39want to take care of widows. That's not it.
- 11:42But that the resources that the church has, let those resources
- 11:47be given to someone who really, really needs them.
- 11:51Who really needs them? A widow who was a true widow.
- 11:55She's not going to go to work and work 8 hours anymore.
- 11:58She's not going to marry and have a man take care of her
- 12:02anymore. That's not going to happen.
- 12:04She's a true widow. She has needs.
- 12:07Let the resources that we have be there for them.
- 12:11And then it goes on in verse 17. Now we're going to switch from
- 12:14being from talking about widows to talking about elders, and
- 12:18this is going to close us up. He says here, let the elders who
- 12:21rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those
- 12:24who labor in Word and doctrine. For the Scripture says you shall
- 12:29not muzzle the ox while treads out the grain, and it also says
- 12:33the labor is worthy of his wages.
- 12:36So Paul said the elder should be worthy of double honor.
- 12:39And that double honor in a lot of places is translated.
- 12:42It should be the honor of respect and also the honor of
- 12:46remuneration, you know, financial support for elders.
- 12:50Now, I want to just say this point before we move on to the
- 12:52next point. And the fact is you don't pay a
- 12:55pastor to be a pastor. You don't pay them to do the
- 12:57work of the pastor. That's not why a pastor is paid.
- 13:00That's a hireling. That's a hireling.
- 13:02They're paid to do a job. That's a Harlem.
- 13:05And the Bible says, Jesus even says himself that a hireling
- 13:07doesn't care for the sheep. So you don't even want to hire
- 13:11Lane. That's not what a pastor is paid
- 13:12for. A pastor is given support so
- 13:15that he can be free to be a pastor.
- 13:19That's what a true pastor is being paid for or being
- 13:22supported for. It's not even being paid.
- 13:24It's being supported so that they can be free to be a pastor,
- 13:27so they can be free to put time in the study in prayer, be free
- 13:31to go into calling the sick or those who are shut in, be free
- 13:34to be able to administer the people when they need it.
- 13:37And I don't have to worry about checking in with a job first.
- 13:39Well, I got to do it after work. You know, they can be free to do
- 13:42that. That's why support is given to
- 13:45elders or pastors, not to pay them for their work.
- 13:49That's a Harley. So then he goes on and he says
- 13:52here, do not receive an accusation.
- 13:55Now this is talking about the discipline.
- 13:57We're getting into the discipline of elders, and this
- 13:59is for elders. Keep that in mind.
- 14:01This is not just for the general congregation.
- 14:03This is for elders. Do not receive an accusation
- 14:06against an elder except from two or three witnesses, pastors,
- 14:11elders, they're targets. They're targets.
- 14:14And it only takes someone to be offended by something that a
- 14:17pastor may not even be aware that he said or did that
- 14:21offended someone and that person then slanders it has happened.
- 14:25The person may slander a pastor or or or say things that just
- 14:29aren't true or misconstrue some things.
- 14:32It all of a sudden accusation comes up that this pastor have
- 14:35committed a sin. So Paul says in order to try to
- 14:39avoid those things from happening, Timothy, these
- 14:42misunderstandings or these false accusations, in order to try to
- 14:46avoid that from happening, don't even receive the accusation
- 14:52unless you get two or three witnesses that this is going on.
- 14:57So in other words, if one person comes to Pastor Clark and says
- 15:00Lewis is sinning, this is what he did, only one person, that
- 15:07person could have an issue that might not even be true.
- 15:10But if two or three people come to him and said, Pastor Clark,
- 15:13I've seen Lewis do this, I saw him do this, well, now that's an
- 15:16issue. That's an issue that needs to be
- 15:19dealt with. So then that particular point is
- 15:22confronted. The elder is confronted about it
- 15:24and given an opportunity to own it and repent and turn from it.
- 15:29That's an important part of repenting.
- 15:31OK, not only repenting and asking for forgiveness, but
- 15:33returning from the sin. You can't continue to do it.
- 15:36So here in verse 20, he says those who are sinning rebuke in
- 15:42the presence of all that the rest may fear.
- 15:45Now when he says those who are sinning, that means that they
- 15:48did not repent and they did not turn from it and they're
- 15:53continuing that same old activity.
- 15:55They're continuing that behavior.
- 15:57He said for those now you got to take it before the other elders.
- 16:02You got to rebuke them in front of the other elders.
- 16:06So then he goes here to verse 21 and he says I charge you before
- 16:11God. I like the way he said this.
- 16:13He said I charge you before God. And if that one enough and the
- 16:17Lord Jesus Christ and if that one enough and the elect angels
- 16:22that you observe these things. Now this is the important part.
- 16:26He says without prejudice. That means it can't don't be
- 16:30harder on someone that you don't like.
- 16:34So you're more prone to receive the accusation and to do
- 16:38discipline because this is an L that you don't like.
- 16:41This is somebody you got something against.
- 16:43He said don't judge this thing with prejudice and he says and
- 16:47also do nothing with with partiality.
- 16:50That means you're covering up a sin for someone that you do like
- 16:56or you're dismissing it or you're being a little softer on
- 17:00that person because you like them.
- 17:02He said no, in the foot of the cross, we're all the same.
- 17:06We are all the same. God said several times, I am no
- 17:09respecter of persons. There's no one more important
- 17:13than someone else, no one rather than this house or rather than
- 17:17any other church. No one is more important than
- 17:20anybody else to God. We're all the same, no respecter
- 17:25of persons. And then he goes on here in
- 17:29verse 22 and says, and do not lay hands on anyone hastily nor
- 17:33share in the other person's sins.
- 17:35Keep yourself pure. Now, I love the way he put this
- 17:39because what he's saying here is that in order to try to avoid
- 17:42this from happening, Timothy, don't lay hands on people.
- 17:45Suddenly don't lay hands on people's.
- 17:47Don't just rush people into the position of eldership or
- 17:50pastorate. Take some time, view these
- 17:54people, look at their life, look at different situations.
- 17:58How do they act in different situations or circumstances?
- 18:00He said you got to take some time to do that.
- 18:02And then he said nor share in other people's sins.
- 18:05That means if you know that someone is not right and you're
- 18:09still putting them in place, then you are sharing their sins,
- 18:13you're sharing in their sins. Or if you're trying to help them
- 18:15to cover the sins so no one else can see it, then you're sharing
- 18:18in their sins. You're sharing in their sins.
- 18:23And he says here, or if you reinstate someone too soon, you
- 18:28restore them too soon while they're still sinning.
- 18:31That is being a Co conspirator in their sins.
- 18:34But he said, keep yourself pure. Keep a pure heart, Timothy.
- 18:37Keep a pure heart when you do it, it's not worse for someone
- 18:41else than it is for another guy. Keep your heart pure.
- 18:44So that also be a good example so that you don't send before
- 18:49the other elders as well. Now here in verse 23, it's
- 18:52interesting because in the midst of all of this, he now takes
- 18:55time to speak to Timothy personally.
- 18:59All these other things were just like wide open general
- 19:02instructions. But now he speaks to Timothy
- 19:05personally and he says, and by the way, Timothy, by the way, I
- 19:10know this ministry has taken a toll on you.
- 19:14Your stomach is bothering you. I know that and I care about
- 19:18you, Timothy. So don't just drink water.
- 19:20Drink a little wine with your water.
- 19:24Purify that water. Use wine as a disinfectant to
- 19:28try to get some of those germs, some of those parasites out of
- 19:31that water because it may be bothering your stomach.
- 19:34What a sensitive thing to say in the middle of all this godly
- 19:39instruction. But guess what?
- 19:41That's exactly what God does to you as you're reading His word.
- 19:46He takes time to speak to you directly and say, you know what?
- 19:51By the way, this part is for you.
- 19:55This is just for you. I'm not speaking this to
- 19:57everybody. I'm just giving this to you.
- 20:00I care about you. This is something you want to
- 20:03take a look at. Take a look at this change that.
- 20:08Give us that alert, that nudge. It's personal.
- 20:11I love you and I know you by name.
- 20:16This is just for you. Maybe you're going through some
- 20:20hard times and say I love you, but I'm going to give you a
- 20:22scripture. This is not for everybody else.
- 20:25This is just for you to encourage you.
- 20:27You need encouragement. That's God.
- 20:30That's how loving He is and how gracious He is in the midst of
- 20:35all that. Then in 24, he goes back to
- 20:36talking about how to choose elders.
- 20:39So some men's sins are clearly evident, okay, Preceding them to
- 20:43judgment. In other words, you ain't going
- 20:44to choose them because you can already see that they're
- 20:46sending, so you're not going to put them in place.
- 20:48They're sending right in front of you.
- 20:49So that's an easy choice, but there are some Mens who follow
- 20:53later. That means you don't see it
- 20:56right away. You put them in place and then
- 20:58later those things come up because you didn't take time to
- 21:02observe them. And then he says in Likewise,
- 21:05the good works of some are clearly evident.
- 21:08We can have good works, right? In the beginning, it looks like
- 21:11this is a good choice because look at all the good works he's
- 21:13doing and then he said, and those that are otherwise cannot
- 21:18be hidden. In other words, there may be
- 21:20works that you don't see, but that person is doing good works.
- 21:23And later on those things come out.
- 21:26If it's us who is doing sins that are not evident right now,
- 21:31we want the Lord to show us what those sins are because we don't
- 21:36want to be in a situation where we get the judgment and then
- 21:40have to deal with those sins too late.
- 21:43Lord, show me now what it is that I need to change in my
- 21:47life. Show me now where I'm out of
- 21:49order. Show me now where I'm in
- 21:51disobedience to Your word. Show me now.
- 21:55That should be our prayer that we see these things now so that
- 21:59our light can shine before men. I just want to say in closing
- 22:05that obedience to God is important.
- 22:08I mean, that's why we walk in obedience to Him and we walk in
- 22:12holiness, which is obedience to the Lord.
- 22:15And it's interesting because as we walk in obedience, we get the
- 22:18opportunity to truly live out the heart of God.
- 22:24So when we get these instructions, they help us to
- 22:27avoid those troubles and problems that Timothy was trying
- 22:31to avoid. Paul was saying, basically, I'm
- 22:34giving you these things so that you can avoid pitfalls.
- 22:36Timothy, I don't want you to go through the problems that some
- 22:40others may have had to go through because they didn't obey
- 22:43this. So I'm giving you these things
- 22:45clearly, specifically, methodically.
- 22:51And the Word of God does the same thing for us.
- 22:53He gives us His Word to help us, to try to avoid pitfalls, to try
- 22:58to avoid some of the issues that may happen.
- 23:00Yes, we're still going to suffer.
- 23:01We're still going to deal with afflictions, but they don't have
- 23:05to be self-inflicted. They don't have to be
- 23:08self-inflicted. Jesus Christ was our example of
- 23:14one who was obedient. In fact, the Bible says He was
- 23:16obedient unto death, unto death. And because He was obedient, he
- 23:25benefited from a lot of things that His Father did in his life,
- 23:31but he still had to suffer. In fact, it was because of his
- 23:35obedience that He allowed himself to suffer.
- 23:38But the benefit of that is what we have here, believers,
- 23:43salvation, eternal life. He did that for us.
- 23:49You've been listening to Pastor Louis Harrell here on Living
- 23:52Waters of Grace. We're digging into all that Paul
- 23:56shared with Timothy in the books of First and Second Timothy.
- 24:00Timothy was commissioned to do the following fight the good
- 24:03fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were
- 24:07also called, and have confessed the good confession in the
- 24:11presence of many witnesses. Timothy would be carrying on
- 24:16what Paul had taught him and continuing on in ministry, even
- 24:20though Paul knew that more hardships would come for
- 24:23Timothy. This is the Christian life.
- 24:26It's not glamorous. It's not some celebrity status.
- 24:31It's hard fought. It's gritty, it's unpopular, but
- 24:35it's worth it. Do you believe that today?
- 24:38Are you willing to fight the good fight even at the cost of
- 24:42earthly pleasures? Living the life of a follower of
- 24:45Jesus will have its heavenly rewards.
