- 0:00You're listening to the Sports Therapy Association podcast, putting evidence
- 0:04back into soft tissue therapy.
- 0:07Music.
- 0:20Welcome to episode 187 of the Sports Therapy Association podcast.
- 0:25Podcast my name is matt phillips created over on chat live.com
- 0:29and as always this episode is being
- 0:32recorded live on a tuesday eight o'clock
- 0:34on the sports therapy association youtube channel on
- 0:38the sports therapy association facebook page and the
- 0:41facebook open group so if you are listening to the
- 0:43podcast and you're thinking oh wow i didn't realize these were recorded live
- 0:46then if you'd like to come along and join us live
- 0:49and mix with the other live people in
- 0:52the live lounge and ask ask questions directly to our wonderful guests
- 0:55then all you have to do is go along to one of those places we
- 0:58stream on at eight o'clock on a tuesday simple as that and if you do come and
- 1:02join us live then if you do comment and i can bring your name and comment up
- 1:06onto the screen as you will see shortly if you're watching the youtube recording
- 1:10which is also a nice way of sharing your logo and getting your name out there
- 1:13so it's a networking opportunity as well.
- 1:16So this is part two of our three-part series
- 1:20called how to set up a massage therapy business business
- 1:23in which we are joined by a panel of experienced sports
- 1:26massage therapists and sports therapists who are
- 1:29all members of the sports therapy association and they're
- 1:32going to be sharing tips on how to set up a
- 1:35sports massage clinic and in this case whilst renting
- 1:38a room in some form or another last week in
- 1:42part one it was all about setting up at home be
- 1:45it in your garage or in your garden in a purpose-built shed or in a room with
- 1:51a house and we had some wonderful examples from our panel and some great sharing
- 1:56of experiences both good and bad with advice and on on it came across really
- 2:02positively i'm really interested tonight to see,
- 2:04what the disadvantage or what the advantages are over working from home obviously
- 2:09there is a lot of confirmation bias because the people we had last week all
- 2:12work from home but some of our guests tonight do as well so we'll be comparing it to that.
- 2:17And I would like to say thank you, of course, to our panel from last week,
- 2:21who were Nikki Mansfield talking wonderfully about exactly the conversion of
- 2:25a garage. It's brilliant. You have to watch that on YouTube.
- 2:27I mean, you've got it from garage all the way through to empty space,
- 2:31through to a beautiful therapy room.
- 2:33So that's really worth tuning in to watch.
- 2:37We had hannah tabram with her shed
- 2:39with pretensions or pretensions which is a
- 2:42purpose-built shed in a garden or a log cabin as her
- 2:45partner would refer to people were referred to it
- 2:48and louise asher of la sports
- 2:51massage therapy was with us as well again it's
- 2:54worth watching youtube showing how her lounge transforms suddenly
- 2:58into this clinic so clever the way she does it so anybody
- 3:01who's thinking i could never do this at home i just haven't got the space i can't
- 3:04do in this room definitely worth tuning in to have a look at that so it's such
- 3:08a clever way so thanks louise for joining us for that and also steve kirby of
- 3:11get fit stay fit norfolk who for 14 years has been working from a purpose-built
- 3:15wooden treatment room in the garden so there was a lot of experience and advice
- 3:18from steve there so thank you panel we have a new panel tonight we'll be bringing up shortly.
- 3:24Just going to say hi to a few people in the live lounge. Talking of Nicky Mansfield,
- 3:28here's Nicky Mansfield.
- 3:29Good evening, Matthew. Lovely to see you and your beard again on this chilly
- 3:32Tuesday. Thank you, Nicky. Just read that out loud. Probably should have put
- 3:35it in my head first of all. But thanks for caring.
- 3:37So who else we got? Cecily Hislop. Welcome back. Lovely to see your name again.
- 3:42Cecily's doing some great things. We were talking about you the other night, weren't we?
- 3:45About you, not to you. But yeah, nice to see you, Cecily, back again.
- 3:48And Cecily says, evening, STA lovelies. Looking forward to this one as I might
- 3:51be renting a room in a beauty salon soon.
- 3:54Great perfect place for you to be hanging out tonight and also glenn
- 3:57murphy's with swell just bringing these messages up into the youtube you've
- 4:01listened to the podcast and this is one of these pictures so glenn murphy says
- 4:04thought i would pop in for a change for a change glenn you're one of our most
- 4:08respected and consistent listeners so thank you for joining us in the live lounge
- 4:12and other people coming through as well just to remind you if you're joining
- 4:15us from the facebook group.
- 4:17Then there is a facebook security thing which i
- 4:21kind of announce every time because you need
- 4:24to basically give you permission to facebook to
- 4:27allow your picture and your comment to appear
- 4:30on the screen what i'll do is i'll put the link at
- 4:33the bottom of the screen now for a while but if you do see your comment coming
- 4:36up as facebook user as opposed to your wonderful
- 4:40face or logo then it's because you haven't gone to
- 4:43this link which is basically just b.live forward
- 4:46slash comments hyphen issue click that once
- 4:49give permission and then you'll be able to share your logo name and
- 4:52everything which will make it a much more immersed sensation
- 4:55for you when you do leave your comments there we go
- 4:58right i think i've left for long enough down in the
- 5:01lobby the sta panel for tonight so what i will do now no particular order i
- 5:06should bring them all up and we will start tonight's episode which if you've
- 5:09just fast-forwarded to this version here this moment is going to be setting
- 5:14up sports massage therapy clinic part two renting a room.
- 5:20Music.
- 5:32So we got i'll say hi and then people get used to your name hi chloe reynolds
- 5:36yeah hi thanks for joining us we've got immy tester hi i've lost my box easy
- 5:41to tell which one's timmy tonight timmy right in me tonight i said timmy because
- 5:46it sounded a little bit cartoon character but thanks for joining us i know i
- 5:49know your throat is way off so you do need to leave so do please
- 5:52don't stress yourself or make yourself worse for tomorrow thanks for
- 5:55joining simmy and sarah jones you can't just wait oh i
- 5:58can there you go that's sarah's voice sarah is
- 6:01there you go right so thanks for joining us people so nice of you to give up your
- 6:04time uh to talk about tonight's topic people in
- 6:08the or people listen to the podcast we will give out details of
- 6:11our panel as always at the end we'll mention their website so if
- 6:13you like what you hear you want to get in contact with them then they've all
- 6:16given permission uh for you to call them at any time you'd like 24 hours we'll
- 6:21be putting the phone numbers in the i did say this you didn't have to explain
- 6:25yeah we put in the show notes but you're welcome to contact them and they're
- 6:28They're more than happy to assist you if there's anything they say which will be useful to you.
- 6:33Vernon Smeed has just joined. Hey, Vernon, how are you doing?
- 6:35Can you say hi to the experts? There's an example of a Facebook user.
- 6:40That is simply because you haven't clicked the link.
- 6:43That's all. If you'd like your name to come up, Facebook user,
- 6:45and then just click that link, and you'll be able to share whoever you are,
- 6:49because at the moment we don't know.
- 6:50Right then. So we're also expecting
- 6:53at some point potentially Anna Maria Mazzieri, maybe a show from Gary.
- 6:56So we hope they're well and not here at the moment. oh gary is in the live he's
- 7:00in the lounge ladies look hovering in the background less required animal ears
- 7:04send a message okay thank you
- 7:05very much gary crossing that one right part two here we go renting a room,
- 7:12I guess first, as we did last week, we better have you guys introducing yourself, if that's okay.
- 7:17Oh, let's bring up Anna Maria while she's preparing her hair.
- 7:21Let's do that now and not give her a chance. Hey, Anna Maria, how you doing?
- 7:26Good evening. This is another reason, if you listen to the podcast,
- 7:29in England we have the two-finger salute.
- 7:34When you see an Italian do it, it's just so much more offensive. It's incredible.
- 7:37So, yeah, definitely won't go to YouTube for that one.
- 7:39Hi, Anna Maria. Sorry to interrupt you. I hope you're well. looking great very well
- 7:43thank you can you hear me hear you perfectly who needs
- 7:45a sound or vision to test with you you're such a pro uh you've
- 7:48joined us where we're just going to introduce each other so we will come to each
- 7:52of you in turn i'm just interested for our listeners again to
- 7:54hear your voice since the podcast and also just your experience of
- 7:58of renting a room so maybe if we
- 8:00start off with chloe reynolds tell us all about you
- 8:03hi i'm so i'm chloe i'm a level four sports massage therapist
- 8:06i work in shakespeare goshes i'm just up
- 8:09the road from becky carroll who's a a big STA area so
- 8:13I'm just up the road from her I work with a really really
- 8:16wide range of clients the last four years I was
- 8:19gym based in a very bodybuilder muscly
- 8:23big weighty gym and then more recently I've just moved into a room in a more
- 8:29beauty-esque co-working space so that's like hairdressers nails beauty so two
- 8:34very very different environments to rent from so yeah Yeah, lots of pros and cons, kind of both.
- 8:40That's great. That'd be really interesting to hear about that,
- 8:43how the change of environment, depending on where you work, can have a big impact.
- 8:46So we'll come back to that later on.
- 8:47I'm just going to bring up, for those of you, at least the podcast,
- 8:49there will be a few sharings, as always, of screenshots of webpages and stuff
- 8:53like that, because they're inspiring as well. I mean, I particularly love a webpage.
- 8:56I love the passion that goes behind it. I think that's so important.
- 8:59It tells people about you.
- 9:01So Chloe's website here, just if you're listening, you want to have a look at
- 9:04it, then you want to go to www.crsportsmassage.co.uk.
- 9:10Simple as that, CR.
- 9:12Great website, by the way. Chloe, really like the information you've got on it.
- 9:16I love the about the CR. That's so good. You've turned yourself into kind of
- 9:19like just a, it's almost like a Netflix drama at the moment. Come to the CR.
- 9:24Some really interesting information about that, which we will draw upon later
- 9:27on, especially the change you've done recently. So thank you for that, Chloe.
- 9:31Let's move to Sarah. Sarah Jones, tell us about yourself.
- 9:34Hi, so I have done a whole mixture of things.
- 9:38So I work from home, but I have done room rental in the past.
- 9:41I've been an associate and a few clients and I've also been employed.
- 9:44So I'm a soft tissue therapist, level five. And my special interest would be
- 9:49around menopause and adolescence, getting them back to activity.
- 9:55And I run a local menopause cafe. fantastic right we're
- 9:59going to give a little people who are watching youtube a flash of
- 10:02your website as well let's put this
- 10:05up here full screens if people can see it um if
- 10:08you're interested in seeing so's website it's affinitybodyworks.co.uk again
- 10:12lovely website i just find them so inspiring and we've
- 10:16said this in other in other episodes we won't talk about it now but
- 10:19a website can be so important because once people get your
- 10:22website you can then redirect to your social media feed you
- 10:25can write blogs you can really help nurture your people it is some people think
- 10:29it's not necessary and you don't even get by with just facebook but i think
- 10:32there's an argument that you do need a website especially if you want to show
- 10:35your individual talents and everything so great another website there we'll
- 10:40make sure all the websites go into the links on the show notes.
- 10:43Emmy tester tell us about yourself in not too
- 10:46many words just to save your voice yeah I think
- 10:49like Sarah I've worked in pretty much
- 10:52each different way but never worked from
- 10:55my own home but I've I've been employed and worked for someone
- 10:58else I've done mobile I've rented a room in multiple locations and now I've
- 11:06got a leasehold on my own clinic and that's where I am now and I'm in well I
- 11:12live in Gloucestershire but I work in South Gloucestershire so yeah not not not too far away.
- 11:18And that's it. That's fine. I feel so guilty making you talk.
- 11:22No, no, it doesn't matter. It's just my partner's really pleased.
- 11:27And again, except for the website, I recommend people check it out for inspiration
- 11:31and ideas and to get to know a little bit about Immy. If you go to.
- 11:37Backontracksportsholistic.co.uk, there'll be a link in the show notes as always,
- 11:40then you'll get some wonderful ideas. Such a chilled out, lovely website.
- 11:44I love the strap line on the front of it this time is all about you
- 11:46it's just so warming and it's just the equivalent of a hug isn't
- 11:49it it's just the words for solidifying our open arm
- 11:52i'm going to look after you it's about you it's great really good
- 11:55in me and there's loads of that on there because as you listen and if
- 11:58you get to know me then so much is about that
- 12:01it's about personal care and just empathy and everything
- 12:04so i recommend you have a look at that website is that
- 12:07everybody of course it's not because there's one thing which joins two of you
- 12:12together in terms of using and making the most of your talents as tutors and
- 12:17that is Anna Maria Mazzieri and it's great to have Anna Maria here a lot of
- 12:20you will know Anna Maria has been on the show quite a few times and Anna is a clinic owner and and.
- 12:28What word should I use? Nourishes, nurtures. She's a conduit for excellence.
- 12:32She takes people. I nourish, yes. I do nourish as well. Nourish.
- 12:35You are a nourisher. You nourish me.
- 12:37You have nourished the kids. You've nourished me. So, Ana Maria, thanks for joining us.
- 12:43Obviously, director at the ST School, and also a lot of people know you from
- 12:47the hands-on hub at Therapy Expo.
- 12:49But you weren't born, as far as I know, you weren't born as director of the school.
- 12:53You've probably worked yourself and known lots of these things we can talk about.
- 12:56So, yes, yes, I run a clinic and it's a multi, well, it's an interdisciplinary clinic.
- 13:04So everybody's a soft tissue therapist in the clinic.
- 13:07And as a clinic owner, I have gone through every possible status like employed
- 13:16people, self-employment in terms of associate and room hire.
- 13:21But I also hired rooms. And now that I've expanded, I actually expanded through,
- 13:27you know, in a different format through hiring a room from another already established clinic.
- 13:33So I have a little bit of an experience on both sides, actually.
- 13:38Yeah. And it's not as sometimes there are some hidden costs in certain situations
- 13:46that people might not be aware of.
- 13:47As a clinic owner, you see all these things in a little bit of a different eyes.
- 13:52Fantastic it's gonna be really useful having you here
- 13:55tonight because because there's obviously two sides to
- 13:58this story there's the people who are thinking of renting a room and then it's
- 14:01gonna a lot of it's gonna depend on who you rent from so and it's gonna lend
- 14:05a lot of experience with regards to that and we are going to do another a lot
- 14:10of experience no it's not a little bit i'm not that if you've oh come on for
- 14:14a 30 year old you've done an awful lot so you know it's It's impressive what we've managed to do,
- 14:19you know, since leaving university in the last eight years.
- 14:23So, yeah, we are going to do another episode about being employed because that's
- 14:28obviously we're going to talk about that in a moment, about the difference,
- 14:31important differences between being employed and self-employed and the relationship
- 14:34with the, who would then be your employer.
- 14:37But we will do an episode on that and we'll do it with the employers.
- 14:40So I'll try and twist down those arms, come back another time and be joined
- 14:44by other employers who will be giving their advice to people.
- 14:47All therapists out there who do like the idea of being an employee and the various
- 14:51benefits that come with it but also highlighting some of the potential pitfalls
- 14:54and problems which you might mention tonight as well so we'll do that at a later date because we're not.
- 15:00That'd be something to come up so i just want to say hi and
- 15:03thank you to ali park crown who's first
- 15:06time here welcome ali thanks for joining us live
- 15:09ali says evening all my first attendants live well i
- 15:11love listening regularly on my dog walks what's great to have you live ali i
- 15:14hope there's lots of questions benefits you can get from coming here so right
- 15:19let's have a little think i think first of all this is something we've always
- 15:23had a little chat of air to put something together there's so much we can talk
- 15:26about so much experience in here between us i thought Well,
- 15:30maybe first clarifying the different types of work set up we're going to talk about.
- 15:35So we're looking at, obviously, employed, which we're not going to touch on,
- 15:40but it's worth mentioning the differences.
- 15:42But then I'm interested in hearing the difference between the self-employed
- 15:45versions of renting and then being an associate.
- 15:47Because I was an associate for about 10 years and I didn't even realise.
- 15:52Now I know, thanks to you lot. So, yeah, who wants to kick off with that,
- 15:55the difference between renting and being an associate?
- 15:58See it i mean you can all do eventually but someone started
- 16:01going go on then anna i can kick it off if you like on that sir
- 16:04yeah so difference with the
- 16:07different models for rental where you either pay ad hoc if you've got a really
- 16:12kind clinic that just let you pay per client that you've got in for like you're
- 16:16at hourly rate or you have to pay for a block or a half day or a full day so
- 16:21you've got that with rental you're responsible for generating your own clients.
- 16:26So there's all that side of things i'll let other people go into
- 16:29that a bit more depth and then associate the you
- 16:32are you're still self-employed but you are under the
- 16:36umbrella of a clinic and you they
- 16:39will take a percentage of you and that will vary from clinic to clinic
- 16:42as to what they offer within within that umbrella as well
- 16:45as and how much you get from them as an associate but generally
- 16:48they will book your appointments for you manage
- 16:51your diary and you you can generate clients through through that clinic and
- 16:56you have to put minimal work in yourself way so i'd say that's a that's just
- 16:59like bonus in that way but you have a little less autonomy and saying that you
- 17:03do as an associate that's great so people in the live lounge who are watching,
- 17:09maybe if you can type in there whether you what you do whether you're an associate
- 17:13or whether you rent a room and whether it's a clear distinction for you because
- 17:17we'll be mentioning those words quite a lot probably when we talk about our
- 17:20experiences and the advantages and disadvantages to reach.
- 17:23Ana Maria, you raised an interesting point when we chatted before about,
- 17:28knowing whether you have got an employer or whether they're
- 17:31actually the clinic owner because or can you provide so can
- 17:33you expand on that for us yeah this is what
- 17:36people need to be very careful with the associate contract so
- 17:39when you when you are under associate contract is a
- 17:42provision of services which means you
- 17:46are self-employed and in order
- 17:49to be self-employed in order to be self-employed you
- 17:52need to fulfill certain criteria and the hmrc website
- 17:56is a great place to go because there is actually a
- 17:59like a questionnaires being self-employed
- 18:02means that you actually are independent you
- 18:07provide you provide work you you do the work in the in in you're responsible
- 18:15sorry you're responsible for the work you you you done if you but you You pay your own taxes.
- 18:23You are free from the perspective of kind of choosing your own hours.
- 18:28So we see an agreement with the provisional services.
- 18:31The clinic owner, however, cannot have you working there for,
- 18:37there is something to do with the amount of hours.
- 18:41If you can only work, for example, only for the clinic and not other clinics,
- 18:47the clinic owner cannot have you to work only for the clinic and not other areas.
- 18:54You must be free to be able to work in different clinics.
- 18:59You must be free to be able to choose your own hours.
- 19:02You must be free to be able to say, actually, I want to not wear the uniform.
- 19:09You cannot have a uniform, for example, in an associate.
- 19:14So associate contract is a provisional services contract. It means me as a,
- 19:19let's say, clinic owner, I...
- 19:23My clinic needs to provide soft tissue therapy services.
- 19:28I then engage with Sarah, for example, and I ask Sarah to provide the services
- 19:36for me, in this case, the clinic.
- 19:41Sarah said, yeah, I provide the services. We agree on the day, on the times and so on.
- 19:46If Sarah says I want us to provide the services also
- 19:50from a clinic you know in Badley
- 19:53Salterton I cannot say to her no you cannot so they have to be free and if Sarah
- 20:02says actually and I want to wear my Affinity Body Works t-shirt and not the
- 20:07clinic t-shirt and I need to be able to,
- 20:10To say aloud, yes.
- 20:12Unfortunately, what we are seeing and hearing all the time, and some of the
- 20:16things I hear, oh my God, if I do that to my therapist, I will be shut down.
- 20:20People being prevented to be fully autonomous in their work.
- 20:27People being asked to work in a certain way instead of others.
- 20:32People being kind of asked to come into clinic, even if they don't have clients.
- 20:38Yes from an editor and a work ethics yes there are certain things that you know
- 20:44it's quite nice to work together with a with a person that is your associate
- 20:48but ultimately you're self-employed.
- 20:51Self-employed means you are fully autonomous
- 20:55in your work if
- 20:59instead the the the clinical and once you
- 21:02do go in at this time when you're not booked in they want you
- 21:05to do certain amount of work then they have
- 21:08to pay also for your minimum at least minimum
- 21:11wage and pay you for when you're away on holiday okay so that's why it's really
- 21:17really important that the contracts are very found on online they're called
- 21:23provisional services contracts and i cannot recommend enough hmrc.
- 21:29Because they have a fantastic questionnaires to
- 21:32be asked said that any any
- 21:35therapist that worked we we used to work we
- 21:38used to do associates any therapist with associates we had
- 21:43for example we discussed so as as the whole
- 21:46clinic i said what is the outfit we want
- 21:49to wear so it's not a uniform what is the
- 21:51outfit we all decided together actually
- 21:55wearing an outfit with the clinic logo on
- 21:58was everybody's benefit but i
- 22:01could not say to them you cannot wear your
- 22:04own that we you know there
- 22:07are certain things we decided together but you
- 22:10know you have to be very careful that you are an associate and not an employee
- 22:15that's really interesting can i ask gary uh yes i was gonna ask you gary in
- 22:21fact the rule of thumb is if you work more than 60 percent Total self-employment
- 22:25income is from one source.
- 22:28You may be classified as HMRC.
- 22:32Yes, that's why I forgot about it, actually.
- 22:35It's not a strict rule because you can be actually associated just with one
- 22:41clinic, but it's a very, very fine thread there.
- 22:47Because if they want you there and they actually say, no, you can only work
- 22:52here, you can only do that, Then they need to pay for statutory sick pay.
- 22:57All these are the perks an employee...
- 23:00Does have so you cannot have both you know
- 23:03in the gig economy because we are in the gig economy you cannot
- 23:06have both you know what do
- 23:09you call it you know both things yeah yeah
- 23:12no interesting that's a real kind of a red flag for anybody who's considering
- 23:16taking on that kind of position as an associate um in case you do find employees
- 23:22beginning to take the mic and you're doing more for their business that you
- 23:25don't really need to because they're not giving you that's why So it's really
- 23:28important that we switch the mindset.
- 23:32If you're an associate, you have, just because somebody owns a clinic.
- 23:38It does not mean that he's their employer.
- 23:40And this is really a big bone of contention.
- 23:43You know, they are, as you, as the professional, you are the same.
- 23:49The difference is their business is to have the clinic, your business is to provide the services.
- 23:54But they're not your employer
- 23:57but that means also that you as a therapist
- 24:00you have way more responsibilities than if
- 24:03you were an employee the clients even
- 24:07if you're associate the clients are the relationship
- 24:10with the client the business and insurance relationship
- 24:13with the clients it's yours you know
- 24:17you have you know you have individual responsibility
- 24:21as a self-employed person fascinating
- 24:26stuff already i'm wondering whether any of
- 24:29the other people in the panels are chloe sarah or emmy
- 24:32have you ever had kind of questionable experiences
- 24:35in a situation where you were an associate and they
- 24:38were asking more of you than was actually legally allowed
- 24:42yeah i i well i was
- 24:45fresh so i'd already been working as a
- 24:48massage therapist before but i was only just qualified as a
- 24:51sports massage therapist and I worked
- 24:54I won't say who I worked for went for a company and they
- 24:57would even if if we wanted to take holiday somebody
- 25:01at one of the other massage therapists would have to have to volunteer to cover
- 25:07that holiday or you didn't take it come up we were not employed in the end and
- 25:13we all of us were unavailable all of the time but yeah but But that was common practice.
- 25:17It was a chiropractic clinic and that was common practice among the chiropractors.
- 25:21And where you're self-employed. Yeah.
- 25:23And I had to wear their uniform. I got told off for work because I did work.
- 25:27I was building my business working somewhere else as well. And I wasn't allowed to wear my uniform.
- 25:32Lots of, lots of things. So just to give people an idea, what was that clinic
- 25:37owner gaining from not having you as an official employee?
- 25:42Yeah. What were they gaining by not just signing up and you being an employee?
- 25:45How was it in their advantage to keep you as an associate, but an abused associate, if you like?
- 25:50They didn't have to pay me holiday pay or sick
- 25:53pay or anything like that so they just you know
- 25:56i came in the hours that i were the days that i was scheduled to
- 25:59work because i worked as a receptionist the other days that was employed
- 26:02so i had dual so i was a receptionist some days
- 26:05and then i was sports massage therapist other days but
- 26:08for yeah for the for the time i was a sports massage therapist
- 26:11i yeah that wasn't covered by sick pay
- 26:15or holiday pay or anything okay so that's it was
- 26:2060 40 to 60 to them but i
- 26:24was new and i wanted it so you know it other the other side
- 26:27of it it was really good for building experience you know
- 26:30in in that in in that business so
- 26:33i i did learn a lot i learned a lot of things not to.
- 26:36Do and i learned a lot from the other people working
- 26:39there so it you know it for the time i was there and
- 26:42it was valuable as well interesting way of
- 26:45looking at it what about sarah and chloe have you had bad experiences i
- 26:48don't hate to start off on a downer and look at the bad side of things but
- 26:51i think it's really relevant you know it's it's a good information for listeners
- 26:54have you ever had problems with an employer who has basically
- 26:57taken the mic no i haven't i've always
- 27:00been like very self self-employed so i've not that was i've heard
- 27:02of other stories like this similar not personally no
- 27:05okay fine so you've always been in a situation where it
- 27:09was always you basically renting a room and you
- 27:11had to bring your clients in there was no no booking done for you there was
- 27:14no advertising done for you you weren't part of their website or anything like
- 27:17that it was just sole trader yeah okay
- 27:21that's worked for you fine great and and sarah have
- 27:24you got any stories personally yeah so i worked i worked in wallet clinic again
- 27:28i won't name them and they weren't they weren't bad or anything but we i was
- 27:31an associate there pre-covid and then they changed it to room rental post-covid
- 27:36which is fine that worked for their business but I'd say Amy did you say you paid 60% to?
- 27:42They had 60 I had I had. Yeah that's a lot see I've always paid 40% in in the
- 27:48two associate roles that I've done so I can't say I've had a bad experience
- 27:52just different experiences.
- 27:54I'm an associate in the clinic that I'm in now and that's quite a different
- 27:57experience there to the one that I was in before and it's just it's not bad
- 28:00it's just different as to what they offer how much they promote your services
- 28:05it's in their interest to to see your diary booked up.
- 28:08The sort of things you get provided in clinic all those sort
- 28:11of things so no nothing bad not for me
- 28:14it's interesting it reminds me of because i started
- 28:17off in strength and conditioning i worked for do i name yeah
- 28:19work for david lloyd and when i started off this is
- 28:22going back to like 2000 or something it was
- 28:25personal trainers and we'd take 60 of
- 28:28what we charged the client we could charge the client what we wanted and we
- 28:31would take 60 and we gave the gym 40 to use the equipment and everything
- 28:34we got provided it no we
- 28:36didn't have to wear their uniform i think we could have if we
- 28:39wanted to but we would have our own t-shirts with a name across the back and it
- 28:42was kind of in their interest to let us we were kind of like the kind
- 28:45of strut around the gym we were the personal trainers kind of crew it's very cool and
- 28:48then one day they called us all into the office i remember this so vividly and
- 28:51they said hi guys how are you nice to see you all together great yeah lovely and
- 28:54basically they said you know where you used to get 60 and
- 28:57we used to get 40 we're kind going to swap
- 29:00that over now so now personal trainers are going to get 40
- 29:03and we're all going to get 60 but we're going to give you some training and
- 29:06we a lot of the personal trainers left and that was responsible for
- 29:09part of the kind of boot camps and people started being
- 29:13driven out of the gyms and they started doing the park stuff which
- 29:15led to you know some great outdoor activities but it was
- 29:19interesting thinking back then as to how guided whether they could have done
- 29:23that the truth is they did put us on some great courses and they really looked
- 29:27after us they can do that can they because it's yeah so yeah yeah absolutely
- 29:31so the self-employment or associates.
- 29:38The the i the great thing is it's a it's an agreement between the two parties
- 29:45okay you have as a clinic owner and and gary gary i pick up onto the contracts
- 29:50you just said because you're absolutely right.
- 29:53That you it's an agreement between
- 29:56two parties okay so why
- 30:00sometimes we like to to not employ
- 30:03people some companies because that they do not
- 30:06have to pay the the statutory pay the holiday pay
- 30:09the sickness but sometimes it's because it's such
- 30:12a cleaner relationship if you're
- 30:15employed and you're having for example a little
- 30:18bit of difficulty with your with your therapist with your
- 30:21your employee the process to rightly so
- 30:25the process to to terminate an
- 30:28employment contract is a complex drawn-out
- 30:33process and sometimes you know
- 30:36with the self-employment you just have a two weeks
- 30:39notice four weeks notice so for some people they
- 30:42prefer that they prefer that easy relationship both parties
- 30:46both parties because if somebody gets a room somewhere else they
- 30:49say well i don't want to continue there and also
- 30:52for for for room for therapists when
- 30:56you are an employed the client belongs to the clinic if yourself and therefore
- 31:04all the notes and everything quality control is clinic based if you are an associate
- 31:10or room hire so if you're self-employed and sole trader,
- 31:15the client's relationship belongs to you.
- 31:21So for an employee, we all know in our job.
- 31:25It's all about the therapist. It's not about the clinic. You can have the most
- 31:28beautiful clinic. It's the therapist.
- 31:30So when the therapists leave, in any case, they're taking the clients away anyway.
- 31:38Because the clients, most of the time, they're going to go with the therapist
- 31:41because that's when they establish a relationship.
- 31:44So from that perspective, it's not really worthwhile for
- 31:48an employer or for a
- 31:51clinic to employ because also
- 31:54for other reasons with VAT especially with massage therapy
- 31:57because actually the client will go anyway so
- 32:00from that perspective in before we go back a moment to what Gary said it's really
- 32:08important that you have the right contract sign a contract and have absolutely
- 32:13the right contract because that will tell you that you are absolutely responsible for for your NI,
- 32:19for your tax, for your insurance and so on.
- 32:23And I can put up some very common contracts, even the contracts that I give
- 32:28that it's, you know, I'm quite happy to share them.
- 32:32The other thing is talking about the 60-40 or the 40-60.
- 32:35As I say, they can. So I send always, we did, we went from the shift.
- 32:41I mean, when I started, I had some of them employed and some of them self-employed.
- 32:46I was giving them 70, I was keeping 30, I realized pretty soon that that was
- 32:52not the right thing to do anyway because the expense to run a clinic, they are humongous.
- 32:59So, but let's say when I change, for example, every time I change or room hire
- 33:05or percentage or whatever, you give one month of intention to change the contract.
- 33:13Then the therapist can say, yes, I agree. oh
- 33:17i don't agree if some of them say actually i'm not
- 33:19you know i'm not quite happy with it can we do it differently if
- 33:23i can do a different i will if no i'm gonna say i'm sorry you know this is the
- 33:27way i need to go now so certainly there is not you know the clinic needs to
- 33:32and sometimes clinics needs to do that because you know 60 40 for example 60
- 33:39to the clinic that is outright wrong.
- 33:42That is absolutely outright wrong.
- 33:44The therapist should always take the biggest part.
- 33:49I would argue maybe while they're still a student and they require maybe a little
- 33:54bit, a lot of support, I might say that.
- 33:58But I do think fair is 50-50 or 60-40 for the therapist.
- 34:03But there is a lot of hidden costs when you are an associate,
- 34:08much bigger than when you are in room rental.
- 34:12So that's often they need to be catered for and, you know, run in the clinic
- 34:18with your receptionist, with the book, the room, you know, kept in a certain
- 34:23way and all these other bits and pieces that costs.
- 34:26But I will never go below 50 percent share. Never, never.
- 34:31Fascinating. Well, we've got a few people in. Thank you, Anna Maria.
- 34:34Such really, really great information.
- 34:36And it's a great warning. morning just pay heed people
- 34:39out there if you are considering getting involved with employers because we're not
- 34:42even saying the employer is out to get you it's just employers got
- 34:45a business and they're trying to pay bills and they might kind of
- 34:48you know they're going to do what they can to get money as well so they might
- 34:51need to explain to them nicely just you know what I don't
- 34:54actually have to do this as an associate blah blah blah so it might be
- 34:57communication and all that's really important they may really not
- 35:00know so I'm interested let's have a look people have
- 35:03joined as Penny from Soma Sports Massage says I'm self-employed working
- 35:06from home but looking to collaborate with a chiropractor friend and
- 35:08looking to rent somewhere together and we had
- 35:11someone else there who I think was talking about Nikki Mansfield
- 35:15said she was very interested in what Anna's saying because she is
- 35:18a clinic owner renting thinking oh going to start up as a
- 35:21clinic owner renting rooms to therapists so that's going to be interesting when
- 35:24we do our employer session as well and I think our Cecily has something to say
- 35:28about looking for a change in her life let's have a look where's Cecily there
- 35:31oh yeah renting a room in a beauty salon soon as well so let's Let's talk about,
- 35:36especially those of you who have rented a room.
- 35:38So we're not talking about associate for the moment. Let's talk about just renting a room.
- 35:42Let's talk about some of the advantages compared to working from home,
- 35:45compared to being an associate.
- 35:48What are some of the enjoyments you can get and the benefits from just renting the room?
- 35:52Anyone can jump in unless you think there's none and everyone
- 35:55should be an associate i guess you're you're completely in
- 35:58control of your diary so you choose your
- 36:01working hours you choose how many people you see it's
- 36:04it's it's like running your business from home but
- 36:07you're in a different room so i'd say that's the good point for
- 36:10me is that you're completely in control of how you run it
- 36:13and how many hours you work and you've done that
- 36:16before have you sarah or you work from home at some of your hours at home as
- 36:18well so you've got that i work from home at the the moment but i first when i first
- 36:21started out my room wasn't ready so i rented in
- 36:24a local osteopaths that's what that was where i started out
- 36:27and they were really kind they let me pay ad hoc rather
- 36:30than having to block up or anything so they were really kind so i was just starting
- 36:33out that's cool that's good and chloe you're a renter yeah i'd probably say
- 36:38like no extra costs like your bills your music license heating that's normally
- 36:44included in your rental price or you You don't have to think about that.
- 36:46It's always really great.
- 36:47I think being able to, if you're allowed to, like, change up the room,
- 36:51decorate it how you want, that's always a really, really great advantage as
- 36:53well to make it your kind of space as well.
- 36:56Nice point. Yeah, you do that autonomy of creating it. I suppose it all depends
- 37:00on what sort of person you are as well.
- 37:01Because, I mean, I'm sure we'll talk about the disadvantages in a second.
- 37:04But does it take a certain type of person, do you think, Chloe,
- 37:08to be able to survive in where you're just renting a room? You've got quite
- 37:10a lot of responsibilities as well, haven't you?
- 37:12Yeah, 100%. i think because i was within a
- 37:15gym so you're also a face within even though i
- 37:17was like a sole trader within that gym you still are a face for
- 37:20the business so i think that is also quite a responsibility to be or present
- 37:25all the time or to be there as well yeah yeah so i suppose again it depends
- 37:30where you're renting it's a lot of depends in this isn't there amy did you have
- 37:34any good experiences to renting or was it was it all just people taking advantage of your personality No,
- 37:39at one point I was working at three different places at the same time.
- 37:43Wow. So you had three different sort of.
- 37:46Sort of you know three different areas where you could get different clients
- 37:49from so that was nice you weren't sort of using up
- 37:52you know all the clients in one area and is
- 37:55that sorry that's interesting was that because you wanted that or you couldn't
- 37:58get enough hours or you couldn't do have enough time hours but
- 38:01also i was trying to sort of move from
- 38:04different so i i lived in one area and they were quite far you
- 38:07know relatively far away so you're in different
- 38:10from town so a lot of
- 38:13new clients in each area so
- 38:16that was good and it was nice working with
- 38:19other people you know I miss that now you can be lonely working on your own
- 38:23so there were other therapists there and some of them were different disciplines
- 38:28so we could cross refer and that worked really well really helped build my business
- 38:32up made some really nice relationships I'm still still in contact with two of the places.
- 38:38Now the third place, that's just for renting rooms out.
- 38:41They weren't therapists, but they were all really, I really love my time with all of them. Yeah.
- 38:47So that's an interesting point as well. And we've talked about that a lot on
- 38:50the show is the benefits of working with other therapists because it can be
- 38:54a great learning experience.
- 38:55It helps with imposter syndrome.
- 38:58It helps with your client base because you can send people to other therapists
- 39:01and they'll send them back to you sort of stuff.
- 39:03Can you achieve that then with certain setups helps where you are renting a
- 39:06room if you're renting a room in a building which has got other therapists also
- 39:09renting rooms i guess you can have that if everyone kind of likes meets up together
- 39:12can you get that for just renting.
- 39:15This is exactly what we do now at the clinic.
- 39:22So we moved away from associates.
- 39:26So the clinic is not anymore a provider of soft tissue therapy services in Exmouth, in Devon.
- 39:34The clinic now is a space where therapists provide services to the community.
- 39:47So that's what changes for us. We are not the provider anymore of the services.
- 39:53We are providing rooms for therapists to provide services.
- 39:57And the way we do it, we choose
- 40:00very specifically the people who hire
- 40:04those rooms so we have a very strong core team we
- 40:07do not allow people we never did people from oh
- 40:10i just want to rent the room for one hour they still
- 40:13do a doc but they're chosen to to work within the clinic and we run it still
- 40:19as as a clinic team so you know the the difference is and and i like you know
- 40:25many clinic can have that the model the difference is that instead of of being on an associate,
- 40:32they are room higher. What is the benefit of that?
- 40:37For the therapists, we went into room higher for different reasons.
- 40:40Once because VAT, it's a problem.
- 40:43If you are in a clinic like ours, yes, I am in the property business. Absolutely.
- 40:51In the estate business, my dear, like Gary said.
- 40:56So it's, what do you call it? Oh, I just, my menopausal brain,
- 41:02I just lost, lost my thread.
- 41:05What was I saying? That's, that's my menopausal brain. Gary,
- 41:08no, it's Gary's fault. Gary just jumped in. Yeah, yeah, it's Gary that is just...
- 41:13Yes, so moving over from an associate to a room hire.
- 41:19And that is better because for us, you hit the VAT very easily.
- 41:24So if you have three rooms and you're not an HCPC, you're not registered with
- 41:30your HCPC, when you're an associate, all the money of the clients come into you as the clinic.
- 41:39Does not matter how quickly you give your
- 41:4260 percent back to the therapist the hmrc
- 41:46sees the money as your turnover and out of the turnover the charge vat the vat
- 41:53them is paid out of your share as a clinic owner that is not viable so that's
- 41:59why as a clinic as a massage clinic clinic, we know HCPC,
- 42:03we went for room hire.
- 42:05Once we've done many years of associates, we knew then that I had a very strong
- 42:13core team that really believed in what we were, our ethos.
- 42:17I was then safe to go room hire.
- 42:20Why safe? Safe because when you're in your room hire, you don't have quality control.
- 42:25I cannot tell my therapist, you have to do I can, they can come and ask me some
- 42:32support, but I'm higher in the room to them.
- 42:36So it's a very different mindset. You got to be absolutely sure that the people
- 42:42that renting from you, they are not going to be the same.
- 42:46You know much in your ethos from but from another perspective it's wonderful
- 42:51because it gave them the tiny little bit more like Sarah said autonomy but also
- 42:58what they're purchasing and I said that very often I said that to the to the
- 43:03room I'm renting for my therapist in another clinic.
- 43:07I said that you're not paying for the
- 43:10four walls or for the towels or for the couch don't
- 43:14think like that when you're going to room hire
- 43:17choose the right clinic and why
- 43:20your pain is not for the room you're paying for the
- 43:23clinic name for the experience
- 43:26for the exposure people that come
- 43:29into our to to hire from us
- 43:32you know my therapist they are
- 43:35paying not for the clean for the room themselves they're
- 43:38paying for the fact that i've been we've been there for 20 years that
- 43:42people know about the clinic so
- 43:46that's something which you provide you don't have to provide that do
- 43:48you you could not advertise them or put them on a website
- 43:51or if they're renting you could just say you're by yourself just give me the
- 43:54money so that's kind of why would i why would i not advertise them so yeah well
- 44:00why would i not advertise them you know i wanted the clinic to be busy first
- 44:05of all as a clinic owner you choose the right therapist attitude is way more.
- 44:12Important than sometimes you know skill set
- 44:15because attitude is really attitude with
- 44:18the clients you know i don't want the therapist after 45
- 44:21minutes that you know the treatment is
- 44:2445 minutes and then you see them coming out at 40 minutes and
- 44:27i could not tell them anything right clary i want to bring you in because you
- 44:31were shaking your head when you were like oh working by myself has not been
- 44:34a very very encompassing oh everyone's gonna love me and talk to me and share
- 44:37stuff you haven't had that because you haven't bumped into that kind of employer
- 44:40that what kind of clinic owner have you you've had different experiences.
- 44:45Oh, sorry, I've got you on mute because I was trying to sort out an echo.
- 44:48There we go, you're back.
- 44:49Yeah, no, where I've been by myself kind of for like four years,
- 44:52it kind of wasn't until last year that I realised how lonely I kind of was within
- 44:57this world because I connected with a few therapists in my local area,
- 45:02meet up with them, have a chit-chat.
- 45:03But I think when you work by yourself, and sometimes the gym I was working in
- 45:07is empty, there's no one passing by to have a chit-chat to.
- 45:10I never spoke shop or therapy shop with anyone.
- 45:14I never spoke about oh I had a client in
- 45:17the other day who had this this and this I'd never have I
- 45:20had so long where I didn't have that conversation with anyone
- 45:24unless I really really went to
- 45:26meet up with someone so I think now where I'm in an environment
- 45:29yes okay I am the only therapist or body
- 45:33work person in the building it's nice to have someone to
- 45:36speak to about clients and oh I had a really awful client
- 45:39blah blah blah it's really nice now
- 45:42to have that even though we're very different industries it's nice to
- 45:45have those conversations whereas when I was in the gym I would
- 45:48not talk shop for months and months and months with someone unless
- 45:51I listened to like one of these podcasts or if I really was
- 45:55really to seek it out I wouldn't have a conversation
- 45:58about my career or I wouldn't almost like a CPD conversation I just wouldn't
- 46:02have them so I think being in somewhere like Anne-Marie's place where you've
- 46:07got lots of people talking all the time being able to pass on experience is
- 46:11really really great if you can rent from somewhere I I do think it's worthwhile
- 46:14or if you are renting by yourself,
- 46:16it's worth trying to really seek out those conversations because I realized
- 46:20I wasn't having them and I wasn't understanding my knowledge because I wasn't
- 46:23having the conversations.
- 46:25That's interesting. That's a great point. And I love the way you say that even
- 46:28if even though you're in a place now where you're renting, even though they're
- 46:32not also soft tissue therapists, there's still some really important conversation
- 46:35to have just over working with clients.
- 46:37You're all working in that industry and there's going to be some great crossovers
- 46:42and things. Good to hear.
- 46:44Sarah, haven't heard from you for a while.
- 46:50And what's your yeah your renting versing
- 46:53so versus associate so you're from home
- 46:56in the moment and you're renting it's tricky because you're renting
- 46:59depends who you rent with but what would you recommend to people
- 47:02obviously if they are renting they need to try and find
- 47:04someone who's maybe going to give them above and beyond you know and the type
- 47:09of person yeah it's i've had yeah a few different experiences so because at
- 47:13the moment i'm at home and i'm an associate yet i'm inherently a little bit
- 47:16lazy with my marketing so i need somebody else to do it for me but with room
- 47:20rental i found in both the places i've rented they i've been on their website.
- 47:25There's been varying amounts of how much they try to
- 47:28market you but again that's a bonus because they don't
- 47:31have to do that for re-rental so so i've had
- 47:34i haven't had a bad experience to be honest it's been nice
- 47:38i've been part of part of both clinics but like
- 47:41chloe was saying it's nice to have other people to talk to so i've both both
- 47:47of my room renters have been within clinics rather than in a separate building
- 47:50or you know with different businesses so i've had the luxury of being able to
- 47:54speak to or refer to osteopaths and hypnotherapists and physios and all sorts of things,
- 48:00so i'm quite happy with my experience excellent i
- 48:03would say i would yeah i would say if you if you
- 48:06don't want to work from home i think rental's a really really good option
- 48:09if you can find the the right clinic that's supportive and like
- 48:12anna said if you agree you know if your ethos you
- 48:16know if they if you agree with theirs they agree with yours then if you've got
- 48:20a good match then i think that's a good starting point excellent what about
- 48:24we're getting close to time now what about money is it a gross generalization
- 48:28to say that one form like associate versus rent is going to get you more money
- 48:32to some people think that's the case or is there yeah how does it work.
- 48:37I don't think so you know there are pros
- 48:40and cons to all all of them you don't know I've got
- 48:42my own leasehold now so when I was working at my
- 48:46peak at my peak when I was working these three
- 48:48clinics I think I was paying about a thousand pound
- 48:51a month in in room rent and the rent was reasonable I
- 48:54worked a lot of hours partly it was my own fault because
- 48:57I didn't want to take the day whole day rent because
- 49:00I was paranoid about being ill or something
- 49:03like that so it was partly my own fault but now I've got
- 49:06a leasehold which is much cheaper but I also
- 49:09have hidden expenses you know I have the the heating
- 49:12bills the electricity bills I'm lucky
- 49:15I don't pay rates because it because I'm it's such
- 49:18a small old building but that some people
- 49:21have to pay rates I've always done my own advertising so
- 49:24that's and I don't particularly advertise that much so
- 49:27that's not a problem but you know you are responsible for everything music licenses
- 49:31insurances building building insurances you know the list goes on so although
- 49:37I pay a lot less per month in rent there's all these hidden expenses it probably doesn't work out.
- 49:45That's what I was going
- 49:48to say because we looked at it and I helped some
- 49:51of my some because some of my therapists I
- 49:54encouraged them or they wanted to work from home as
- 49:57well so I encouraged them to do that because I think
- 50:00it's really healthy for them to do and
- 50:02for them to see the difference although you have to be careful
- 50:05with whom you do it in kind of so they don't take clients home instead of seeing
- 50:10them at the clinic however when we done the calculation you'll see you even
- 50:15you just see the nails so if you do a calculation over one year so not three
- 50:20months over the one year and you look at the expenses.
- 50:24For room hire so my therapist come in they pay that room hire which is different years years.
- 50:31And and that's it they go home and you know they're done they don't have much
- 50:37more on top of that and you look at from if they work from when they work from
- 50:40home the difference is no law in my look they're working from home or having
- 50:46got die expenses but you have that time,
- 50:49expense that people do never think time to
- 50:52book your clients in time to you know your
- 50:55booking booking system the time to do all these
- 50:58bits in the room you know washing the towel all
- 51:02those hidden costs which are not hidden anymore once you've taken them into
- 51:06consideration so actually the difference is not and the other thing i say instead
- 51:11of always look again it's a mindset instead of look you know it's more expensive
- 51:15look at the added value so working for a clinic that that is well known, for example,
- 51:22there is, so if you work from home, and you go, you started out,
- 51:27you know, but you go, you provide five hours, slotted hours,
- 51:32if you haven't got a client there, you haven't got a client,
- 51:37well, if you're working from a clinic, there is more chance,
- 51:40you got more fruitful, and the client will actually be filled for,
- 51:46you know, will be filled for you every time you don't have a client that is
- 51:51money lost and when you work by yourself,
- 51:54that is money lost for a clinic it's in my interest to fill all those hours very interesting.
- 52:01There's something i think i recall emmy bringing up
- 52:04before and what's something that can be a
- 52:07real problem in this industry is burnout
- 52:10because you're thinking the only way i'm going to make more money is by
- 52:13doing more clients and we're going to have some really interesting episodes coming
- 52:16up showing that massage therapists especially now
- 52:19we realize that the skill is not just what we're doing with
- 52:22our hands we can work with clients even when
- 52:25we're not seeing them we could do it virtually we could be
- 52:27doing it with a spreadsheet and monitoring them because because we realize now
- 52:31we are facilitators we're educators we're doing so much more we're listeners
- 52:35we're doing so much more than just what we're doing with our hands there's new
- 52:38business models where you can be earning money whilst you're massaging one client
- 52:42and something else is happening in the background or that That evening,
- 52:44you can tap into something on your computer.
- 52:46So we're going to have a really good guest who's going to be talking about that.
- 52:49But in order to avoid the temptation of just I'm going to do nine hours a day
- 52:55back to back because I need the money.
- 52:58Do any of these particular systems help prevent that? Is there an advantage
- 53:01of working with somebody who's going to say you're going to burn out rather than just by yourself?
- 53:05Or what do you think? What experiences have you had?
- 53:09If you're renting a room and you're only renting set days because there's other
- 53:13therapists there, you can't be working the days that you don't have that room.
- 53:18Unless you manage to find three rooms. I have definitely been guilty of doing that.
- 53:25You have to be very self-disciplined when you've got that room,
- 53:27you know, seven days a week with my leasehold.
- 53:30I can go in and work whenever I want to. and I'm trying
- 53:33to be more disciplined and book time off because
- 53:36I've got other things that working from home things
- 53:39to do I've got paperwork I've got work for the
- 53:42school I've got CPD I've got other
- 53:45stuff to do so I'm trying to be disciplined and block
- 53:48a day out but it's hard when you've got a client and they're
- 53:50messaging you they're injured or you know that
- 53:53they're a lot of my clients have a lot of complex psychosocial issues and they
- 53:59want your they want you they they want your time it's really hard to say no
- 54:03sometimes so you do have to be extra disciplined then definitely and I've not
- 54:08always managed it I'm definitely getting better at it.
- 54:12I think I really I'll remind you close to time
- 54:14but again just to reiterate I've just found the date on Tuesday the 19th
- 54:18on the Sports Therapy Association podcast join either
- 54:21on YouTube or Facebook where our guest is going to be talking
- 54:24about a particular business model which is
- 54:27hybrid and and he regards guards he's from america he
- 54:30works with the rehab guru guys and
- 54:34it's and he's showing us how we should really as
- 54:36health care professionals be moving into a hybrid kind of
- 54:39care where we are looking after people whilst we're maybe
- 54:42treating someone else for for monetary value and
- 54:45to stop ourselves from burning out because for too long now
- 54:48the health care system has been based on you only make money whilst
- 54:51you're seeing one person in front of you and that's a really really difficult model so
- 54:54i do encourage you to listen to that one are we
- 54:57burning out because we are doing too many hours
- 55:00or it is all the other hidden things
- 55:04around being a massage therapist that makes us burning out because actually
- 55:09i from the response i had from my therapist the the fabulous things about being
- 55:15you know in a supportive clinic is the fact that you're are supported in doing other bits,
- 55:23or you know if you don't want to do room hire you are in a place where you can do associates and.
- 55:29A lot of that marketing, a lot of that is not by yourself anymore.
- 55:33And that's why a lot of people often get burned out and they feel,
- 55:36oh, I should be doing that, but I do not know how to do it.
- 55:39But that's why you are renting the room from a clinic or that's why,
- 55:42you know, you're an associate from a clinic.
- 55:44You know, go and approach the clinic owner, whatever your relationship is,
- 55:48and say, what can we do to get more clients in, to get more sustainable client base?
- 55:55And actually, the clinic owner should also be there. there doesn't matter
- 55:58if you're a room hire as well you should also be there to support the
- 56:02well-being of the therapist and be you know be
- 56:05on the ball so you may also have
- 56:08other facilities you know like I mean I'm busy
- 56:11enough that I can afford looking at and I
- 56:14also pay because I hate tech anything to do with
- 56:16technology I pay someone to do a lot of my techie stuff
- 56:20that I hate doing and that takes a great huge load of
- 56:23me I pay someone to do half my laundry but but
- 56:26that's also something you can potentially get from a clinic owner if
- 56:29you know that you're that's what they're covering and also
- 56:32they will love that in me they
- 56:35will love that if somebody says to me says Anna do you know
- 56:38what I would prefer to pay a little bit less
- 56:41but I'll help you to do those other bits and
- 56:44pieces I will absolutely take it off their
- 56:47hands because they people there
- 56:50is still this very very misunderstood opinion
- 56:54that we are all reckoning it as clinic
- 56:57owners or as room hire owners in
- 57:01our profession profit margin is very little because you know people needs to
- 57:09be paid the right you know needs to be given the right fee you cannot charge
- 57:13a client you know 90 pounds per treatment at least where i am so profit margin
- 57:18is really little but guess what.
- 57:21Heating costs a lot of money booking system costs a lot of money insurance costs a lot of money so.
- 57:27Yeah well i'm not gonna even say that yeah you
- 57:31know so if somebody says anna i'll help you doing a little bit of
- 57:33facebook or i'll help you doing this spreadsheet you know you
- 57:36will they will love and then you
- 57:39grow you feel part of the growth of the clinic that's how
- 57:42you build team work excellent right
- 57:45look it's it's nine o'clock i want to i
- 57:48was thinking the other day i want to kind of finish these podcasts with
- 57:51what i'm going to call putting theory into practice where we kind of collect
- 57:55our thoughts and we kind of give some advice to the listeners otherwise it's
- 58:00just a load of kind of talking which is great so sorry to spring this on you
- 58:03it's just an idea i had the other day but when you think yeah yeah it's just
- 58:07a came to me by myself when i wasn't talking to anyone else.
- 58:10And yeah, so I want you to have a little think of, imagine there's someone out
- 58:13there, they can't work at home.
- 58:15Let's take that out of the equation. They haven't seen,
- 58:19louise ash's lounge conversion they haven't seen that yet so thinking i can't
- 58:22convert from home i'm gonna go out and i'm gonna rent i'm gonna pay someone money to use their room,
- 58:28just think each of you one bit of advice and that's tricky to
- 58:30think about one bit of advice where you think right you're gonna do that great
- 58:33bear in mind okay have a little think what you would advise as soon as you have
- 58:38got something which you think this is the most important thing go out and do
- 58:40it you can you can speak out proudly this is putting theory into practice If you're new to it,
- 58:49actually do bear in mind working from a clinic.
- 58:53Because you do get that support.
- 58:55It really helps you build your column up and your client base up.
- 58:59And you've got other therapists there to learn. You don't know what you don't
- 59:04know. You've got other therapists to bounce ideas.
- 59:06If you get a tricky client, you don't know what to do. So actually I'd say if
- 59:09you're starting off rather than go it alone, do try and work in a clinic setting.
- 59:14I think it's really, really good to start off with.
- 59:18It's a hard thing on your own, on your own.
- 59:20So don't rush into the idea that my own little room, I can decorate it like
- 59:24I want. It's going to be lovely. It's just me, me, me. I'm tired of you're going to benefit.
- 59:27If you find the right employer, the right clinic owner, then you're going to
- 59:31potentially have lots you can go for. Great.
- 59:33Who's next on putting theory into practice?
- 59:37I'll go. Just, I would say, be really clear on what the clinic or the room renter is offering to you.
- 59:44So in my case, it was through clinics.
- 59:46So just see what they're including in that room rental price.
- 59:50Is it literally just the room? Is it going to be clean? Is it going to be couch roll?
- 59:55Just be very, very clear on what there is and isn't included.
- 59:59And then there's no surprise. Excellent. I would probably
- 1:00:02say it's a stepping stone wherever if you just pass out
- 1:00:05and wherever you end up it's a stepping stone to your next place
- 1:00:08it doesn't matter if you're in a dingy gym like I was
- 1:00:11where it's noisy you've learned so much
- 1:00:14from being wherever you are and you know then what
- 1:00:17you want now so I know what I've got now fits me everything is a stepping stone
- 1:00:22so even if you rent somewhere that's fall for there will always be somewhere
- 1:00:25better and you'll always learn learn from your past experiences that's great
- 1:00:29that's really nice yeah very inspiring that's good yeah good point anna maria
- 1:00:33putting theory into practice what do you think.
- 1:00:38Create for any type of room hire create your own little spreadsheet where you put down every single,
- 1:00:47expense every single the time
- 1:00:50that you spend doing things because then it gives
- 1:00:53you a very good idea where you are in both
- 1:00:56types you choose what is good
- 1:00:58for and i was gonna say i had to rethink it because i was gonna say what
- 1:01:01sarah said don't just look at the price look what do
- 1:01:04you get in the price because in that 15 pounds per hour
- 1:01:07you get the towels grab that you get towels clean done for you grab that that
- 1:01:12option so my next most important thing is you create yourself a a spreadsheet
- 1:01:18and I can send it to all of you because I have it done with all the costs but
- 1:01:23in those costs do not calculate calculate,
- 1:01:28The time you're spending doing things, because that's it's, you know,
- 1:01:33it's not only what you pay, but, you know, how much time you spend doing,
- 1:01:37you know, for example, the towels, because then you get a good idea where you are.
- 1:01:41Is it worthy for me to to take this particular deal or should I go into the other deal?
- 1:01:47And the last thing, remember, you do not hire a room.
- 1:01:51You're hiring a clinic experience. experience you're hiring the place that the
- 1:01:57clinic has the the name that the clinic has in the industry so you go there
- 1:02:01nobody knows you but they know the clinic so that's why you get the clients.
- 1:02:06Good advice good stuff brilliant okay well
