- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 130, can you believe it? Lucas: I know, right? And today we're tackling something super useful: how to ask 'Where is...?' in Swahili. Luna: Oh, that's perfect. I'm always getting lost, so I need this. Lucas: Well, today's your episode. The key phrase is 'iko wapi?' It means 'where is it?'. Luna: Iko wapi. Iko wapi. That rolls off the tongue. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's use it with some places you already know. How do you say 'bathroom'? Luna: Choo. We learned that way back. Lucas: Right. So 'Where is the bathroom?' is 'Choo kiko wapi?'. Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Choo kiko wapi? So 'kiko' is for choo? Lucas: Good catch. When the noun is in the ki-vi class, like 'choo', we say 'kiko wapi'. For other classes, it changes. But don't worry, we'll keep it simple today. Luna: Okay, so for places like 'sokoni' – market – do we say 'sokoni iko wapi?'? Lucas: Yes! 'Sokoni iko wapi?' Perfect. 'Sokoni' is a place, so we use 'iko'. Luna: Sokoni iko wapi? Sokoni iko wapi? Got it. Lucas: Now let's try 'basi' – bus. 'Basi' is in the n-class, so we say 'Basi liko wapi?'. Luna: Basi liko wapi? Basi liko wapi? Oh, so it's 'liko' for that one. Lucas: Exactly. Good ear. Let's do a quick practice. I'll ask a question, you answer with 'Iko hapa' – 'It is here'. Luna: Iko hapa. That's easy. Lucas: Sokoni iko wapi? Luna: Iko hapa. Lucas: Great. Now you ask me. Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Lucas: Kiko hapa. Nice! Now let's imagine you're at a market and you want to find the bus stop. Luna: I'd say 'Basi liko wapi?' to someone. Lucas: Yes, and they might point and say 'liko pale' – 'it is there'. But 'iko hapa' works for here. Let's do a mini dialogue. Luna: Okay, you be the local, I'll be the lost tourist. Lucas: Ready. Ask me where the market is. Luna: Sokoni iko wapi? Lucas: Iko pale. Karibu. Luna: Asante. So 'pale' means 'there'? We haven't learned that. Lucas: Right, but it's a natural response. 'Pale' is 'over there'. We'll cover location words another time. For now, focus on asking the question. Luna: Okay. So today's phrases: Iko wapi? Choo kiko wapi? Sokoni iko wapi? Basi liko wapi? And Iko hapa. Lucas: Perfect summary. Let's say them all once more slowly: Iko wapi. Luna: Iko wapi. Lucas: Choo kiko wapi. Luna: Choo kiko wapi. Lucas: Sokoni iko wapi. Luna: Sokoni iko wapi. Lucas: Basi liko wapi. Luna: Basi liko wapi. Lucas: Iko hapa. Luna: Iko hapa. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, we'd love your support. Luna: Yeah, every little bit helps us keep making free lessons. And we really appreciate it. Lucas: Okay, back to practice. Let's do one more round. I'll say a place, you ask where it is. Luna: Bring it on. Lucas: Basi. Luna: Basi liko wapi? Lucas: Choo. Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Lucas: Sokoni. Luna: Sokoni iko wapi? Lucas: Awesome. You've got it. Keep practicing these, and next time you're in a Swahili-speaking place, you'll be able to find your way around. Luna: Thanks, Lucas. This was really practical. Lucas: My pleasure. That's it for Episode 130. Practice these till we chat again. Kwaheri! Luna: Kwaheri!
