• 0:32
Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast, where we are doing a champion series from the Champions of Legends.
• 0:39
And I have with me my co-host, Jamie, who is the 40 to 44-year-old champion.
• 0:45
And we have our guest, Amy Shappaton, who is the 45 to 49-year-old champion.
• 0:51
And we're going to have a fun day letting two champs talk for a little bit.
• 0:55
And then Jamie has to leave in about 30 minutes.
• 0:58
And we'll just keep the interview going.
• 0:59
  But welcome to the show.
• 1:01
  Welcome, Amy.
• 1:02
  How are you?
• 1:02
  I'm doing great.
• 1:03
  Yeah, excited to be here.
• 1:06
So I'm going to turn it over to Amy and let her start the interview with some questions for you about you and your career.
• 1:14
  Yeah, about you.
• 1:15
I'm like, so happy to actually meet you.
• 1:18
I followed you for a while.
• 1:22
And I know you are a TTT athlete.
• 1:25
That was like my former program that I was doing.
• 1:27
So I know I've seen you in posting in there.
• 1:30
So I've kind of followed your career a little bit.
• 1:32
  But
• 1:33
um i'm just like so excited to learn your background it seems to me i've like looked you up a little bit and it seems to me like you haven't been doing this for super long um your first open was 2020 which would have been the fall the 2019 in the fall right so like right before um the pandemic um but yeah like
• 1:54
So curious what got you into CrossFit.
• 1:58
And I mean, you had to have had an athletic background.
• 2:02
We want to know it all.
• 2:05
Well, I grew up not athletic, not super athletic.
• 2:07
I was actually really small growing up.
• 2:09
Like I didn't mature and like come into kind of full growth, I guess, until after I graduated.
• 2:14
So I remember being like in eighth grade and like they would sub me out in volleyball because I couldn't hit the ball over the net.
• 2:20
Like it was just too far.
• 2:21
Like it was just such a small kid.
• 2:24
And then like growing up, my mom was so cool.
• 2:27
She put me in a marching band.
• 2:29
I was in an all girls marching band and I was in five pin bowling.
• 2:32
So I, so I was killing it in the athletics as a kid, but a lot of it, I did play softball a little bit, but I honestly, I was not super athletic as a kid.
• 2:42
I learned to ride a bike in eighth grade.
• 2:44
  Like I was just, I don't know.
• 2:45
  I wasn't into it.
• 2:46
My brother and sister were, but I was just never,
• 2:49
for whatever reason, was never into it.
• 2:51
But after I graduated just high school, that's kind of when it started for me.
• 2:55
I got into mountain biking, snowboarding, and then rock climbing was the one that I stuck with for quite a few years and got pretty serious about doing that for a good season.
• 3:05
And that's been helpful in CrossFit for sure.
• 3:08
And then from there, I would say nothing super like I had a real struggle with energy and we never actually figured out fully what it was.
• 3:16
But I remember when I got married, my husband Lee and I, like we'd go do a mountain bike ride and I would be on the couch for the rest of the day.
• 3:23
Like that was it for me.
• 3:24
So I would I went through a lot of years of just some sort of chronic fatigue style thing.
• 3:30
Where I would just I couldn't like I just couldn't do it for so long.
• 3:34
And so for several years, I just got into yoga.
• 3:37
I became a yoga instructor, taught it and did that for several years.
• 3:40
And that was honestly what I was doing leading into being introduced to CrossFit.
• 3:46
So Lee and I were kind of nomadic.
• 3:48
And so we were living in a van, a really nice van.
• 3:51
  Don't get me wrong.
• 3:51
Like as a Winnebago Travato, like it's fancy, but we lived in that for a couple of years and we were kind of touring around and doing our thing.
• 3:58
And we ended up, I'm on Vancouver Island in Canada now, but we came to tour here just to visit some friends.
• 4:05
  And we literally never left.
• 4:06
Like we just fell in love with it.
• 4:09
And it was here that some friends of mine were doing CrossFit at the local gym.
• 4:13
And they just said, you should try it out.
• 4:14
Like I was looking for something more than yoga.
• 4:16
Like I'd like to use my fitness.
• 4:17
I'd like to get fit again.
• 4:18
I was actually a group fitness instructor as well as a yoga instructor.
• 4:22
But that never felt good to me because I felt like I would advertise something that I wasn't doing.
• 4:27
You know, like I'd lead people through group fitness classes and indoor cycling and like pump class.
• 4:32
And I naturally have a lot of muscle mass.
• 4:33
And so I felt like, hey, if you do this, you'll look like this.
• 4:36
And I'm like, you really won't look like this.
• 4:39
  This is fully genetic.
• 4:40
So there was just kind of that journey.
• 4:42
And so when we hit Vancouver Island, I'm a little bit of an all or nothing personality.
• 4:47
And so I joined the CrossFit gym and I just made a thing to myself.
• 4:52
OK, I'm going to try this for 90 days and see what happens.
• 4:56
Um, and it was five days a week or six days a week until I hit those 90 classes.
• 5:01
Um, and I really wasn't doing anything else.
• 5:03
Like I, I don't really recommend that for most people, but I, like I could nap in the afternoon.
• 5:06
Um, we were in a season where I wasn't working.
• 5:09
Like it was just kind of this perfect storm.
• 5:10
And my husband went down South, um, his care, take his parents for about 10 weeks.
• 5:15
And so I literally got introduced for CrossFit while he was, um, down South and loved it from day one.
• 5:22
Um, there was a kind of interesting,
• 5:26
I don't know, because sometimes I take on too much and feel like I overtrain and do things a little bit extreme.
• 5:31
But I just felt like in my journey, I felt like if I just stick with this, we'll see how it goes.
• 5:37
And it just honestly, part of my journey is I do have faith in the Lord.
• 5:41
And he actually told me one day, hey, just stick with it.
• 5:44
  It'll regulate.
• 5:45
So I was just kind of praying about it one day.
• 5:46
And I'm like, OK, yeah, let's try it.
• 5:49
But because I felt like I was getting really tired and, you know, like past symptoms and
• 5:53
And so I did, I stuck with the 90 days.
• 5:55
And I think honestly, like just looking at it back now, I think it was the weightlifting.
• 5:59
They did it like somehow balanced out my hormones.
• 6:02
I used to have really high highs and really low lows where I'd feel almost, I wouldn't say depression, but I would have some really low days where I just didn't wanna get out of bed.
• 6:09
  I didn't wanna do anything.
• 6:10
And then I have really high highs.
• 6:12
And so I would say now as a person, I still have highs and lows.
• 6:15
I haven't lost my personality, but it's almost more regulated.
• 6:18
And in the beginning, it was like, I'd be really moody.
• 6:21
And then I'd go to a CrossFit class.
• 6:22
I was like, oh, there's nothing wrong with me.
• 6:24
I just needed to move my body.
• 6:27
And for me, that was kind of my beginning journey into CrossFit.
• 6:29
Like seriously, it totally changed my life and regulation of like more on a mental, emotional side of things.
• 6:38
  Did you start...
• 6:40
I need to ask you quick questions because there's a lot to unpack in all of that.
• 6:46
  I find it funny.
• 6:47
It is just an observation that both 45 to 49 year old champs are nomads.
• 6:53
  You and Grubb.
• 6:54
  Yeah.
• 6:55
  Living in France.
• 6:57
And then were you born in Canada?
• 7:00
  Have you always been Canadian?
• 7:02
Because we have been accused of being a Canadian bias show.
• 7:05
So that means you're welcomed into the family.
• 7:12
  Yeah, Canadians are pretty cool.
• 7:15
  Yeah, I'm in Michigan.
• 7:17
  So close.
• 7:18
But opposite opposite sides of you.
• 7:21
  Like, yeah.
• 7:24
  Yeah.
• 7:24
So did you start in 2019?
• 7:26
  Or did you start before?
• 7:27
  Like, did you start 2018?
• 7:28
  It was May of 2019.
• 7:29
  Yeah.
• 7:31
  Okay.
• 7:32
  Yeah.
• 7:32
So I mean, like, you were pretty, you obviously were pretty good, kind of right when you started CrossFit.
• 7:37
  Yeah.
• 7:38
Just were you strong and like not domestic skills or did you just have it all from the get go?
• 7:45
I would say so for me there, I do have a genetic blessing, if you want to call it that, like I would walk into a weight room and look at a weight and gain muscle.
• 7:52
Like that was kind of how my friends would always say.
• 7:55
And so I always had this thing in the back of my mind, like what would happen if I actually applied myself and what could my body actually do?
• 8:00
But the idea of bodybuilding or anything like that, like I was like, that does not interest me at all.
• 8:05
And so CrossFit kind of opened that door where it was like, hey, we can find out what your body can do and what's your potential.
• 8:10
  So I was strong.
• 8:11
I would say the strength came quite quickly.
• 8:14
And then the gymnastics, I think just from being strong, I could pick it up pretty quick.
• 8:20
And then it's just really the for me, the biggest kind of it's the the high techniques.
• 8:25
  So like the Olympic lifts.
• 8:27
  Right.
• 8:27
Where it's like, I can't just muscle my way through this.
• 8:30
Like I can to a certain point.
• 8:32
But now I'm at that stage where you're like, well, to be as good as you need to be in this realm, you actually have to learn how to do this properly.
• 8:38
So there's been a little phase of unlearning to come back because I think the strength was high coming in that you kind of could fake it a little bit.
• 8:46
And I'm finding that's not working anymore.
• 8:48
  So.
• 8:50
yeah yeah it's definitely technique centric that's that's sort of i have a very similar bias i would say um the technique is is kind of what holds me back um but you so you did the open 2020 that didn't go anywhere for really anyone except for the top five individuals in the world um and then 21 you made it in you were in the 40 to 44 bracket made it into the quarterfinals
• 9:15
And then you aged up in 2022 and bam, made it in semifinals.
• 9:21
  So big jump there.
• 9:23
And then you made it to the games last year and got second to Kelly for real.
• 9:27
  Huge.
• 9:28
  Yeah.
• 9:29
Yeah, I did not expect that at all, by any means.
• 9:31
Like I did have a goal.
• 9:33
  No, not at all.
• 9:34
I did have a goal to make it to the CrossFit Games.
• 9:36
I didn't think it would happen this quickly.
• 9:40
So in semifinals the first year, I was very shocked by that.
• 9:44
And that one, unfortunately, I got really sick that first time going into semifinals.
• 9:48
So it was just like, whatever.
• 9:49
But still in my mind, I wasn't that level of athlete, even this year.
• 9:53
Like it's slowly now starting to change.
• 9:55
I'm kind of starting to get it, maybe after Legends.
• 9:58
but like we were planning a hiking trip there's a west coast trail here in that's quite famous um out on the island that everybody loves to go and hike and so we're booking dates to do that and my husband's like well you can't we can't do the first week in august i'm like why not and he's like because that's when the games are and i'm like i am not making it to the games like you're ridiculous like so so even and that was in march of this past year where i was like no like that one day yes that's the goal but there's no way i will get there this year
• 10:26
Um, so it, yeah, a final started and things were going like, I was shocked.
• 10:30
I'm like, oh, this is going a lot better than I expected.
• 10:34
Um, so that, uh, yeah, that was, uh, it was definitely a shock.
• 10:38
  It was super helpful too.
• 10:40
  I was cause.
• 10:42
At the beginning of the year, we were down South.
• 10:44
  We go lease from Louisiana.
• 10:46
So we actually were down in Louisiana and I was at Scott Tetlow's gym, finished strong and connected with him.
• 10:53
And I was just, I was doing a bunch of volume and I was burning myself out and I wasn't feeling good.
• 11:00
And I was really like shoulder injury, this injury, that.
• 11:02
And so in January of last year, I was like, I don't even know if I want to compete.
• 11:06
Like this isn't actually fun for me.
• 11:08
I just feel like I was always saying like my functional fitness makes me so functional, meaning like I can barely walk and I can barely get up the stairs because I'm working out so hard.
• 11:17
I'm like, this is not good.
• 11:19
So in January, I met Scott down in Louisiana and actually worked out with them for a little bit.
• 11:23
And it was fun for the first time in a long time.
• 11:25
I was like, OK, like this can be fun.
• 11:28
But honestly, I did group classes from January till the end of quarterfinals.
• 11:34
I just did one class an hour a day, six days a week.
• 11:37
  That was fun for me.
• 11:39
And I think I needed that to kind of reset.
• 11:42
And then when it came time, when I qualified for quarterfinals, I'm like, okay, I probably should supplement with something a little bit more.
• 11:48
And that's when I found TTT.
• 11:49
And I was really happy with that because they weren't about massive volume.
• 11:52
They were about looking at your body and doing the things that you need to do.
• 11:56
And so that's what I did going into semifinals and into the games.
• 11:59
And I think that helped me more than like, I actually realized like that style of training really focused on what I needed and moving forward that way.
• 12:07
I made huge leaps in even those three months up to the games.
• 12:10
  It was wild.
• 12:12
How much of your training was by yourself?
• 12:16
  Probably almost zero.
• 12:17
  Yeah.
• 12:20
I do some if I have to, but I've got a really good crew of probably six different people that I can connect with on different days that will train with me.
• 12:29
And I've set that up because I know I don't like to work out alone at all.
• 12:32
Like I learned that during COVID.
• 12:34
I would quit workouts halfway through.
• 12:35
I'm like, you know, and I became a CrossFit coach in the meantime.
• 12:38
And I'm like beating myself up in COVID.
• 12:40
  I'm like, I don't even finish a workout.
• 12:42
Like I just, I'm totally quitting in the middle of this.
• 12:44
And I'm like, you put systems in place that works.
• 12:46
And for me, it's like working out with others is really important to me.
• 12:50
  Yeah.
• 12:51
  Yeah.
• 12:51
You don't have a dedicated coach.
• 12:53
You just kind of follow their programming.
• 12:57
So right now I am leading up to the games.
• 12:59
I was with Brandon Dorman for three months individual.
• 13:03
  Yeah.
• 13:04
And then he kind of oversees the whole master's track.
• 13:06
So still he's definitely involved, but I'm just right in the, I'm in the group track right now.
• 13:10
  I like that too.
• 13:11
I like the group of people doing the same thing.
• 13:14
  Yeah.
• 13:15
Do you like, you said you like to do group classes, but if you're following their programming, do you just like write it out and someone comes and does it with you?
• 13:22
  Yeah.
• 13:22
So now I'm not currently doing group classes.
• 13:24
That was just at the beginning of the year.
• 13:26
So now I do stick directly to the TTT programming, but I have different training partners that I meet at different gyms on different days and we just go through that program.
• 13:34
  That's awesome.
• 13:35
  Yeah.
• 13:35
I find, I find amazing having people.
• 13:39
  Yeah.
• 13:39
  Yeah.
• 13:40
It helps to have somebody in the grind with you for sure.
• 13:43
  Oh yeah.
• 13:44
  Wouldn't do it.
• 13:45
You, what is, how much competition experience?
• 13:49
Cause like all I can really find is you went to the games and then legends.
• 13:53
  Is that it?
• 13:53
  That's your competition?
• 13:54
I have one more that you haven't seen.
• 13:57
So it was only, it was six months in, I did a local competition here on the mainland.
• 14:02
So like an intermediate, I podiumed, I came third, but so it was an intermediate.
• 14:06
So literally, yes, the games was like,
• 14:09
  the first real competition.
• 14:11
And then legends is the second.
• 14:12
So I'm learning how to compete.
• 14:13
So, and yeah, and deciding if I liked that.
• 14:17
And so after legends, I was like, I love this.
• 14:19
I love being on the competition floor.
• 14:21
I love the energy that comes from that.
• 14:22
  I love,
• 14:23
you know, that moment before they say three, two, one, go, like, I just look around and I feel like the most privileged person on the planet.
• 14:29
Like I get to do this.
• 14:30
Like I get to put my, leave myself in the situation with these people and like express our DNA essentially.
• 14:35
  Right.
• 14:36
What do we, what are we all capable of?
• 14:37
  And so I love it.
• 14:38
  Yeah.
• 14:39
But that is essentially my competition experience.
• 14:41
  Yeah.
• 14:42
  That is incredible.
• 14:44
I fascinating between the two of you is, is Amy, you, you have a smile on your face all the time.
• 14:51
And Jamie is very laser focused.
• 14:55
It is so contradictory the way the two of you are on the floor.
• 15:00
It's that's why I thought this was cool that you guys were going to get to talk today because of just the different approaches.
• 15:08
  Totally.
• 15:09
And I, yeah, like for me, it's just, it's, I mean, when I got into CrossFit, I don't, I've never followed any sports.
• 15:14
I'm not into sports and following sports, but when I got into CrossFit, I got into CrossFit.
• 15:18
Like I watched every games, all the behind the scenes, all of the road to the game.
• 15:23
Like I devoured that for those several, you know, those few years.
• 15:27
And so I think part of it is like, I'm so I respect these people and what they do.
• 15:31
  And I'm fascinated by it.
• 15:32
Like, so to be in the actual competition floor,
• 15:35
  I can't stop smiling.
• 15:36
Like, it's just, it's just so exciting to me to be like, I get to do this.
• 15:40
  This is so cool.
• 15:41
So I think part of that is that like just being such a fan of the sport at the same time.
• 15:45
And then the kind of sport that you can actually do it like that doesn't happen anywhere.
• 15:49
  So yeah, I definitely am.
• 15:51
I know I look around and everybody's in the zone and I think like, I should get in the zone.
• 15:54
It's like right before three, two, one go.
• 15:55
And I'm like, just sitting there with a goofy smile on my face.
• 15:58
That may seem... I mean, that seemingly is working incredibly for you.
• 16:02
Like, you may not... Because you don't have the experience, you may not know what you said.
• 16:08
You don't really even know how good you are.
• 16:11
You won Legends, and you won your bracket by the widest margin of any bracket.
• 16:18
I don't know if you're aware of that.
• 16:19
You and Grubb, you're two, that age group, you won by 156 points, and Grubb won by 113 points.
• 16:24
  And be...
• 16:28
Beyond that, it was, you know, a whole lot closer.
• 16:30
So you like you demolished your competition.
• 16:33
  It wasn't even close.
• 16:35
So, I mean, you're probably learning.
• 16:38
You really are that good and you really like deserve to be out there competing against people like Kelly for real.
• 16:44
Like that must have been an incredible experience.
• 16:47
It's sinking in like after the games was just like test and see, see what happens.
• 16:51
And I'm like, well, that was cool.
• 16:53
And then yeah, legends has been more of like, Oh, okay.
• 16:57
And it's so it's funny though.
• 16:58
Cause I was, I was talking to Brandon after and we just kind of debriefing and I was still just waiting for like the shoe to drop.
• 17:03
Like I'm kind of making excuses like, well, they didn't bring out my weaknesses and these workouts were really good for me.
• 17:09
And he just, he just said to me, he's like, Amy, this is always going to go well for you.
• 17:12
like you have no major major holes like you have everybody has holes but like not to the point like and so he just i don't know he said that to me and i was like oh like something started to click you know because it's just like i don't know i guess self-talk can often be very negative and you just come up with every excuse why that worked out um so yeah it is learning and i'm just like wow this is pretty cool like not what i yeah i would
• 17:40
  Just to follow up with.
• 17:42
So you go to the games.
• 17:43
It's your first ever big competition.
• 17:45
You're going up against one of the legends and the masters of the sport, right?
• 17:50
And she dominates year upon year.
• 17:54
  Yep.
• 17:56
How do you look at that competition going into the next season?
• 17:59
Like, what do you have to do to close the gap between you and Kelly?
• 18:05
I think I just have to keep doing what I'm doing, honestly.
• 18:07
  Like, I don't... I would say...
• 18:11
  I'm learning how to compete.
• 18:13
So I would say at the games, like I would say I'm learning how to race.
• 18:16
  You know what I mean?
• 18:17
Like it's one thing to have the capacity to finish and do well and stuff like that, like at legends, but there's so many small things, what we can still tweak in so that I can actually be better to actually race and push and, and all of that.
• 18:29
So I think it's a lot of just kind of all that detail stuff now where it's like, yeah, how do we push to get better?
• 18:35
  And yeah,
• 18:36
I think that's fun for everybody.
• 18:37
I think it'll be fun for Kelly, you know, like, I mean, I think she wants a competition as well.
• 18:43
  Right.
• 18:44
Like, I mean, I would have read like legends was really cool.
• 18:47
It's fun to go in and dominate.
• 18:48
  Like it feels good.
• 18:49
But at the same time, you're like, you kind of want to race people.
• 18:51
Like you want to push, you want to see what you're capable of and not just, Oh yeah, that was enough.
• 18:57
  Right.
• 18:57
And so, yeah, I think it's exciting to just begin to.
• 19:01
And I think, like I said, it's just for me, it's experience.
• 19:03
It's more time doing these things and learning how to compete and all of that.
• 19:08
So that's kind of the focus for sure.
• 19:12
I have that same like negative self-talk, like we finished a comp and I'm like, yeah, but so-and-so wasn't there.
• 19:18
And then, you know, same thing programming wise or, but, um, like you didn't, you're strong.
• 19:24
I've, I've seen your numbers, um, but you didn't win the strength event.
• 19:28
And oddly enough, I think only one, maybe two athletes that won, won the strength event.
• 19:36
  So, um,
• 19:39
like you don't know and that's kind of been kind kind of the theme and and especially like i'd say at the game stuff you don't necessarily have to be the strongest if you have a wide range skills and you do like you're clearly a strong swimmer you won that you won day two and day three and i'm sure scott's gonna when i get off gonna have you walk through all these events and how they felt and stuff but you had incredible day two and three and just you know
• 20:01
Very, very good scores that like held up even across the divisions.
• 20:07
And then, you know, the final day, you probably were able to just relax going into that final event.
• 20:15
Yeah, the final day was just an experiment.
• 20:18
Let's push as hard as you can go and see what happens.
• 20:22
  And I blew up.
• 20:22
That's one way to do it.
• 20:23
That's not the approach that most people took.
• 20:29
Well, no, but I had a pretty secure lockdown.
• 20:31
So I'm like, let's just, right.
• 20:34
And yeah, it, it got bad.
• 20:36
  It got bad.
• 20:39
Talk about this because I know like Jamie knew that she just had to stay close to one competitor and she would be okay.
• 20:48
You had a big enough lead where you could experiment and try new things in the, in that final event.
• 20:54
And, and it didn't really matter how you finished.
• 20:57
So I want you guys to talk about like in compare and contrast what that final day was like being in the lead, knowing what you have to do to win.
• 21:08
Yeah, I think like for me, both.
• 21:11
So Brandon coaching, then my my coach locally here is named Kaylee.
• 21:14
And she went to the games on a team in twenty twenty two.
• 21:18
And both of them are very similar in that, like you push, you always push like there's no they're both telling me it doesn't matter if you can't lose this.
• 21:25
Like you need to go out there and this needs to be like it matters.
• 21:29
  Right.
• 21:29
Like there is no take a break.
• 21:31
  Right.
• 21:32
So it's good for me because I tend to I tend to want to pull back in my like my oh, I should save it.
• 21:38
I don't want to blow up.
• 21:39
I don't want to do any of these things.
• 21:41
And so for me to actually just step in and kind of hit the gas pedal and see what happens, like I just don't like to do that.
• 21:46
Like I want to keep things kind of in control as much as possible, which is smarter in a lot of terms.
• 21:51
But I think it's good to try that, especially in that high pressure situation.
• 21:55
  Right.
• 21:56
And so that was kind of me trying to.
• 21:58
just learn a little more about myself and how far can I go before this could get really bad kind of thing.
• 22:02
  So, yeah.
• 22:04
  Yeah.
• 22:05
  I think that's awesome.
• 22:06
I, I don't get that, that opportunity very often.
• 22:09
  And I, I'm very similar.
• 22:11
Like I like to hold back.
• 22:12
I like to sit on someone's heels and then go.
• 22:15
And that's kind of how I had approached that event.
• 22:17
  It was,
• 22:19
it would have been cool to get that opportunity to just go full bore and try to hang on.
• 22:24
  I hate that feeling, though.
• 22:26
  Oh, absolutely.
• 22:31
  It's not good, really.
• 22:33
Well, and the longer you do this, you know, you start to, I was talking to my coach about this the other day, like,
• 22:42
I almost feel like I've almost been doing this too long that now I don't want to get to that point where it hurts.
• 22:48
Now I know what it's going to feel like.
• 22:50
And I like hold myself back even more.
• 22:51
I used to be like younger and dumber and just get to blackout.
• 22:56
And I kind of regulate that now.
• 22:58
And that used to be my strong suit.
• 23:01
I could hurt more than most people.
• 23:03
And now I like question if I still have it.
• 23:05
So I convince yourself that you're willing.
• 23:07
  Yeah.
• 23:08
  Yeah.
• 23:09
  Yeah.
• 23:12
  Yeah.
• 23:13
  I hear that.
• 23:13
  I hear that.
• 23:14
  It's painful.
• 23:14
  It's not, it is painful.
• 23:17
  Holy cow.
• 23:20
It's the beauty of the sport, but you do it long enough.
• 23:23
You're like, yeah, that one's been hurt.
• 23:24
I'm not going to, I'm not going to go there today.
• 23:25
  Yeah.
• 23:26
Well, I did feel that about that for that last one for sure.
• 23:29
I'm like, Oh man, I bet.
• 23:30
I like give me a little high skill gymnastics in there.
• 23:33
Then everybody's got to slow down.
• 23:34
Like heavy barbell, high skill gymnastics.
• 23:37
We can go at a pace that I can maintain.
• 23:39
  Yeah.
• 23:41
  So it's good.
• 23:41
  I hear you.
• 23:43
  The sprinty things too.
• 23:47
So you're a, are you a full-time coach at Life Tree?
• 23:51
  That's where you're at?
• 23:51
  Yeah.
• 23:52
  Yeah.
• 23:52
And that's your like occupation athlete and coach?
• 23:57
  That's awesome.
• 23:58
Because I'm always curious, like exactly how much time and energy people have.
• 24:01
And especially in the Masters, some of the, like some of the
• 24:07
athletes that have like rudy who has like a full-time job and kids and i'm just like holy smokes i honestly don't know how you do it all you it's just you and your husband yeah yeah you have a nice little setup there then i would say we do we do we enjoy it it's been nice yeah absolutely good
• 24:28
I wanted to ask about the podium poses.
• 24:31
In the thumbnail, I have Amy with the double flex.
• 24:38
I know there's one of Jamie.
• 24:39
  That's not what Legends posted.
• 24:40
I was trying to find it, put them side by side.
• 24:44
You both did the double flex on the podium.
• 24:48
Was that encouraged or was that just how you felt?
• 24:53
  Oh yeah.
• 24:53
  I didn't think about it.
• 24:54
  No, they just said flex.
• 24:55
So what are you, what are you going to do?
• 24:56
You know, that's all he said was flex.
• 24:58
And so like you see in my picture, the man, like Roy's just shirt to show.
• 25:04
  I know.
• 25:11
I, yeah, I immediately just went like, yeah, the bicep, but yeah, they, they did one serious and one flex for every age bracket.
• 25:20
  I thought it was cute.
• 25:20
  Yeah.
• 25:20
You would, I forgot you left right before awards.
• 25:22
  So you missed that.
• 25:23
  Yeah.
• 25:24
I had to catch that flight, but, um, but what I thought was funny is the champions all double flexed and then the second and third places all did single flex.
• 25:34
  Oh, well, there you go.
• 25:36
  We're just asserting our dominance.
• 25:37
  That's all.
• 25:38
  Yeah.
• 25:42
I didn't even think about it.
• 25:47
  Scott's very observant.
• 25:51
That's what my job is, right?
• 25:53
Just being observant and kind of reporting on it.
• 25:56
So I want to kind of walk through the day and hopefully Jamie can stay for a little bit because I think you guys had some similar experiences.
• 26:04
  I went through your Instagram.
• 26:06
I kind of went through your recaps and just some highlights I wanted to talk about from each event.
• 26:11
So it starts with a swim.
• 26:14
And you said that you've been swimming once a week since training for the games and it paid off.
• 26:19
  Shocked myself.
• 26:23
  And you won the event.
• 26:24
yeah that was damage control event for me just so you know that's how i went into that event i'm not a great swimmer or i assume i'm not a straight swimmer like in my swim club like i'm not really that fast like just we just meet once a week and we've been swimming and so um i wouldn't say that's a strength of mine i would say i had some real good coaching on that one um
• 26:46
both coaches were like, you need to transition very fast.
• 26:49
Like there's a lot of transitions, so you don't need to be messing around with things.
• 26:53
And so stuff like goggles stayed on.
• 26:55
  I'm not touching those.
• 26:56
As soon as I'm out of the water, pick up the dumbbell, go like be smooth on the dumbbell.
• 26:59
But then as soon as you put it down, dive back into the pool.
• 27:02
So I would say I won that one on transitions.
• 27:05
And just because I don't feel like I'm still not the fastest swimmer.
• 27:08
I know we had a collegiate swimmer.
• 27:10
I talked to her after and she she that was hers to win.
• 27:13
And she said she messed around.
• 27:15
  in the transitions, right?
• 27:17
So just try to, you know, all of that.
• 27:19
And so, yeah, that one, I honestly, I was like, okay, if I could finish top 10, top five, I'd be ecstatic.
• 27:25
The fact that I came out of the pool and I was like, nobody else has done what's going on right now.
• 27:30
  Cause you can't see, right.
• 27:31
  You got your goggles on.
• 27:31
It's really hard to see what's going on around you.
• 27:34
But yeah, for me, that was a huge shock of all the events.
• 27:37
  It's actually.
• 27:39
And that's where I think you and Jamie were very similar.
• 27:41
  Her transitions, same way.
• 27:43
Like she knows she's not as strong in a pool.
• 27:45
So transitions and go unbroken and no, no reps.
• 27:50
  Yeah.
• 27:53
So then you move to under pressure, which is the lift event.
• 27:57
Um, and you had a long write-up on this.
• 27:59
I'm just going to kind of highlight it is that you suffered a wrist injury.
• 28:03
So the clean and jerk was a little bit scary for you at this event.
• 28:06
Um, plus the snatch, you didn't do well in warmups.
• 28:09
So that wasn't good going out on the floor yet.
• 28:12
You still, you still did pretty well for what you expected, um, on the lifts.
• 28:19
Anything you want to add to that?
• 28:21
i pr'd both lifts um so i mean that's you can't ask for anything more than that um i've struggled with the squat snatch from its inception like i do not like to get under bars um and so i've been working with an olympic lifting coach and the whole goal of this uh progression was to squat snatch the whole way through because i powered at the games i i can at that time i could power more than i could squat
• 28:46
It's ugly, but so this goal, this time I'm like, okay, I'm going to actually work the squat snatch and I'm going to try and do that.
• 28:52
And so I was able to match my power snatch with a squat.
• 28:55
And so I was, I threw one bar behind me and I was ecstatic.
• 29:00
I was just like, I've never thrown a bar behind my head ever.
• 29:02
Cause I don't ever get low enough in the squat.
• 29:04
And, and so as soon as that happened, I was like, oh, I can do this.
• 29:07
I think I can actually squat snatches.
• 29:09
  And I did.
• 29:09
So I was laughing cause my judge is looking at me and I'm like jumping up and down giddy because I failed the lift behind me.
• 29:15
And then hit it on the next one.
• 29:17
And so the funny part was that I missed the 125 twice in the back because I'm trying to squat snatch it, but I can power snatch that pretty easily.
• 29:23
So I come out all convinced I'm going to, I'm going to squat snatch this 125 and I just rip it off the ground and power snatch it.
• 29:28
  Like it's so high.
• 29:32
  Whatever.
• 29:32
We'll go on to the next one.
• 29:33
Does any of that sound familiar?
• 29:44
Yeah, I mean, I'm in this.
• 29:46
I finally have a stronger squat, squat snatch than power snatch.
• 29:50
But I snatching heavy snatching is my least favorite thing.
• 29:57
  And it's I don't know, I just I don't I don't like one rep.
• 30:01
So I feel you on that.
• 30:03
  Yeah.
• 30:04
And then, yeah, the clean and jerk was five more pounds than I did the game.
• 30:07
So it was funny when this first came out, I'm like, oh, we just did this.
• 30:10
Like, how many times are we going to do the Olympic total?
• 30:12
But I was actually really pleased I got to do it four months later and see improvements on both.
• 30:16
So I was like, OK, what I'm doing is working even, you know, just this last four months.
• 30:20
So, yeah, I mean, lifting like that and, you know, when it's game time, it's fun, like just so much fun.
• 30:27
adrenaline and well when things go well it feels good so so yeah i that again the the lift was my worst event at the game so that was another one of those okay i'm kind of doing damage control and then in this field uh or even in the games field that would have been a third um there as well so just that little 10 pound improvement made a huge difference so so you outlifted me so so then you go to hell's bells
• 30:56
uh, grip workout penalty with devil's press.
• 31:01
Um, you had some confusion in this event where you thought you heard the judge say one thing.
• 31:08
And then as you were going through the workout, you heard him say the same thing like much later in the workout.
• 31:16
How does that change your strategy or do you, are you like, Oh crap in the middle of it.
• 31:21
And then like, how do I do this?
• 31:25
  Um,
• 31:26
So I did have my, so my coach Kaylee had gone to the gym that morning and she actually did this workout and she's quite fit.
• 31:32
And she came in like with only 20 seconds left.
• 31:35
And I was like, oh man, like this is going to be a tough one to finish, you know?
• 31:39
And she's like, oh, I think you can do it.
• 31:40
  And I'm like, okay.
• 31:41
So the goal was always at least her goal.
• 31:44
I guess it was mine too, was to finish.
• 31:46
So we're in that last set of devil's press.
• 31:48
And I thought he said one minute left and I had all 12 devil's press to do.
• 31:53
And I just, in my head, I was like, I don't think I can, I don't think I'll get that, you know?
• 31:57
And then, so I did some of them and then I hear him say clearly now one minute left.
• 32:02
And so I was like, oh, so then at that point, I'm like, oh, crap, I think I can finish this.
• 32:09
So then and it was one of those like I looked down and that was a really hard one to know where anybody was like, I'm kind of looking down the lane because part of me like, you know, I'm a little bit of a competitor.
• 32:19
We're like, if I don't have to do more, why am I going to do more?
• 32:21
  You know?
• 32:22
But I'm looking down the lane and everybody's doing devil's press.
• 32:24
And I'm like, well, are they doing their penalty or are they in their devil's press?
• 32:27
Like it was so hard to tell.
• 32:28
So I couldn't game the system.
• 32:30
So I was like, I don't know where anyone is.
• 32:33
And so then it was like, I took one look down the lane and I saw Kaylee's face.
• 32:36
  I'm like, oh, she's,
• 32:38
just that's all it took because I was like I know she wants me to finish and so yeah just then I think I could actually get these done in the minute and finished it and um got done I think I had five seconds to spare before the time cap so just just snuck in there and so I was I was excited about that and I was talking to Kaylee after I'm like yeah like I felt like I was in the lead like I didn't have to push that hard she's like but how good do you feel being like one of the people to finish you know what I mean and I'm like yeah that is yeah yeah
• 33:04
the drive for that is it's, it's, it's for yourself, right?
• 33:07
Where you're like, I did that as opposed to, well, I would have beat everyone if I capped or not, it was ahead of them.
• 33:12
But there is something about that pushing to finish that it's significant.
• 33:16
  It's important.
• 33:17
  I think for sure.
• 33:20
That brings up a big question.
• 33:22
What is your priority at Legends?
• 33:25
  Is it to win?
• 33:26
  Is it to race?
• 33:28
Is it to just get data points to know where you are for the next game season?
• 33:33
Or is it all of the above?
• 33:34
  Probably all of the above.
• 33:36
  I'm new here, Scott.
• 33:37
  We're just learning.
• 33:38
I wanted to win, I will say.
• 33:40
I went in and my hope was to win, but I didn't think I'd win like I did.
• 33:43
  I felt
• 33:48
I'd like to win this for sure.
• 33:50
But all of those things are like what we learned so much, you know, it was having just both coaches there, Brandon and Kaylee, like, you know, like I did really well.
• 34:00
I had two days where I won both events and, and I'm all on the high and everybody's like praising me and you're amazing.
• 34:05
And then you go back to the coaches and they're like, okay, so it's just like the reality of what you could have done better.
• 34:11
  And I need that.
• 34:12
  You know what I mean?
• 34:12
  I appreciate that.
• 34:13
I like that because it's like, we can always continue to grow.
• 34:17
And so that was a neat contrast for sure.
• 34:19
So I think it is, yeah, the data points and learning all of that for sure.
• 34:23
The other theme I noticed throughout your comments about all the events was that you were so happy your family was there to cheer you on.
• 34:32
And like, I've brought this up on a couple of shows, but Haley Maria once said that
• 34:38
It's all about having that one person at the end of your lane that loves you no matter what and is going to root for you no matter what.
• 34:46
What is that feeling like knowing you have those people in your corner no matter what happens on the floor?
• 34:54
  It's huge.
• 34:54
You know, like it, I would say that was my highlight of all of Legends was just having that crew and that team there.
• 35:00
I would say that's the games too.
• 35:01
Like I was set up so well for both of these events just with like coaching and people there and like body workers and people surrounding me and like just loving on me.
• 35:09
And it's just like, I feel like honestly, like I have the easiest job.
• 35:12
Like these people are getting stressed out and doing all this stuff and I just have to get to go out on the floor.
• 35:16
My coach tells me how to warm up, when to warm up, what to eat, when to eat.
• 35:19
Like I'm literally just this machine that's getting pushed through all these pieces and parts.
• 35:24
And yes, I have to perform, but it does feel like it hates this whole team thing.
• 35:29
And I was laughing with one of the competitors.
• 35:31
I'm like, here we are 47 years old and our parents are here to come and cheer us on.
• 35:35
And who doesn't still love that?
• 35:37
  You know what I mean?
• 35:38
It's like, it doesn't go away to have that kind of support and like your family show up.
• 35:42
That's the first time my family has seen me compete.
• 35:44
  And so it was fun.
• 35:45
  It was amazing, right?
• 35:46
Like you just, they just love you so much and they just want you to do well.
• 35:49
And yeah, if you screw up, they don't, you know, they still love you, but it's fun knowing that like everybody's invested and everybody, you know, is hoping that things will go well and all of that.
• 36:00
So it's been a really neat journey that way for sure.
• 36:04
So the next event, I couldn't wait to talk about this one, is jump.
• 36:09
And it is three kinds of jump rope with three rope climbs in between each one.
• 36:16
You talk about that your grip was not good going into that event.
• 36:24
  Go ahead.
• 36:24
Did you go unbroken in the other one?
• 36:31
  I had to break.
• 36:33
  I got to 18.
• 36:33
I tried 19 squat clean and I failed.
• 36:36
And so I did have to put it down.
• 36:37
  I took one.
• 36:38
  Okay.
• 36:39
  One break.
• 36:39
  Yeah.
• 36:39
  Okay.
• 36:40
  Yeah.
• 36:41
  It affected the grip.
• 36:42
  Yeah, for sure.
• 36:44
So what's not good, not good on a grip is when you reach for the beam and you miss.
• 36:50
And then have to re-grip and reach again.
• 36:53
And what's crazy is I was above you at that point, taking video and shooting pictures.
• 37:01
And I swear I have it somewhere that moment.
• 37:05
And I've been digging, but I have so much of it.
• 37:08
I can't remember if I just saw it or if I shot it.
• 37:12
  Right.
• 37:13
But I've been digging for it.
• 37:14
So that was on your last rope climb.
• 37:16
  Mm-hmm.
• 37:18
again like when you miss the first time how quickly do you get reset in your head like stay calm re-grip go again uh well for me personally because i have a history of rock climbing um rope climbs are kind of my jam obviously um and so it doesn't actually phase me like because in rock climbing you would hang out for a good amount of time you know i mean like you'd stop you'd chalk up you'd
• 37:44
you learned how to rest so i've always kind of said like even if i get tired on a rope i can sit there for a second sit on my feet you know i can even stop shake my hands out and then keep going like i just have that confidence just from past history so yeah though it looks like chaos from the outside oh no she missed the beam all of that stuff like for me internally that's just a familiar feel of like yeah your arms are filled and they're pumped and you don't think you can pull anymore
• 38:10
And you can actually still pull or, or I can in that moment.
• 38:13
Like I just know where the limit is, I guess.
• 38:15
And so, yeah, when the judge was like, no, we're up.
• 38:16
  I'm like, okay.
• 38:17
So internally I was quite calm because I just knew that it would be fine to readjust and then hit and then go.
• 38:23
  Yeah.
• 38:24
So that's just past history stuff, but yeah, I can get, I get why rope climbing is like, it's tough for people for sure.
• 38:31
  But yeah.
• 38:33
You really wanted to finish that workout.
• 38:36
After that you had to run.
• 38:37
  Yeah.
• 38:40
a minute i had a minute so angry and then you get you you get to that final rope and it's trip trip trip to start yeah so i didn't actually realize right away my shoe was untied and then when i realized my shoe was untied i returned i became really
• 39:01
  What's a polite word?
• 39:01
I came very dumb in my head.
• 39:03
I was like, I can do this with, I can do this with my shoe untied.
• 39:07
I'll just jump higher or something.
• 39:08
Like, and so then I tripped like three more times.
• 39:10
I'm like, what are you doing?
• 39:12
Tie your shoe, like just tie your shoe.
• 39:14
And so I tied my shoe and I had like, I think I had like five seconds left.
• 39:17
And I thought that rope is so crazy fast.
• 39:20
I think I got like 15 double unders in like five seconds.
• 39:22
I'm like, why didn't you tie your shoe earlier?
• 39:24
Like, so that one was bittersweet and it's good for me.
• 39:27
I, one thing I love about CrossFit is how it humbles you.
• 39:29
  Like,
• 39:30
You know, like that workout was my jam.
• 39:32
  I should have crushed it.
• 39:34
I was from the beginning coming in.
• 39:36
I'm like, this is my, like, there's no, there's no way I'm not going to finish.
• 39:39
There's no way I'm not going to beat everybody.
• 39:40
Like that was a super confident.
• 39:42
And so to be beaten by yourself because you didn't tie your shoe, like it's like ridiculous.
• 39:48
  So, so it's good.
• 39:50
  I think it's, I don't know.
• 39:51
It's healthy for the ego to get put back in place.
• 39:55
  However, you still won.
• 39:57
  Yes.
• 39:59
  Yeah.
• 39:59
It wasn't a costly air, but it was an ego air.
• 40:02
Cause now there's cap plus whatever on there.
• 40:04
And I'm like, ah, should I finish that?
• 40:07
Apparently whatever went on in your head was contagious and it went to the 40 to 44 year old division as well.
• 40:17
Because when Jamie picked up the heavy rope, what happened, Jamie?
• 40:22
  I don't know.
• 40:23
  Nobody knows.
• 40:24
  It was a total mess.
• 40:26
Um, yeah, I, there's not good words for it.
• 40:30
It was not all there out on the floor.
• 40:34
Let's just say that, but we got through that.
• 40:36
And I'm in, I'm the same way.
• 40:38
Like rope climbs are my jam.
• 40:41
So that was never an issue for me.
• 40:44
Um, it just, I, you know, those are the ones where like, you look back on your, like,
• 40:50
You want things to go perfect.
• 40:52
You want to have a you want an event to like that to go as smooth as possible.
• 40:56
And you like, you know, you, you just would like to see what you could do.
• 41:01
And it but things don't always go perfect.
• 41:04
  Totally.
• 41:05
You have to you have to deal with those things.
• 41:07
  So yeah, a little hiccup.
• 41:10
You learn and it didn't cost me too much.
• 41:12
So it was it was okay.
• 41:15
That is exactly what I wanted to say.
• 41:22
  Yes.
• 41:22
So then you come in the next day for Enter Sandman.
• 41:28
Your comment was traps and glutes were feeling the first two days.
• 41:32
Warm-up area is in an ASU gym.
• 41:35
Tons of students getting their pump on while we warmed up.
• 41:38
Kind of fun to navigate the space.
• 41:40
  That was tricky.
• 41:41
  Yeah, for sure.
• 41:42
That well, and then we had one rig in the back to do muscle ups on.
• 41:46
And it was the slickest rig you've ever put your hands on.
• 41:49
Like it's almost like somebody polished it.
• 41:52
  It was not.
• 41:54
And most people were not doing muscle ups.
• 41:56
Cause they were like, I think I'm going to fall off that rig.
• 41:57
So then it became a challenge for me.
• 41:59
I'm like, well, can I do the muscle up on the crazy rig?
• 42:01
But like the first question on your mouth is like, is this what the bars are like out there?
• 42:05
Cause they weren't, they were fabulous.
• 42:07
They were super tacky out on the floor.
• 42:10
But yeah, the one in the warm-up rig, I think it was hazardous.
• 42:12
  It was a little slick.
• 42:14
  It was.
• 42:15
And then, yeah, you're just literally navigating around people, which was pretty wild.
• 42:21
But yeah, that one was hard just because it was late in the day.
• 42:23
And so by 530, I think our heat was.
• 42:27
And for me, it's more nerves.
• 42:29
Like you'd rather just get it done, get it over with and move on.
• 42:33
And so just having a full day, like all day where you're just like, OK, what should I do or whatever?
• 42:38
And you're just nervy all day.
• 42:40
  And I am the heart.
• 42:42
I think the hardest thing about competing is eating.
• 42:44
Just because I have high nerves and then you still have to get the fuel in.
• 42:47
  You have to eat.
• 42:49
And I just find that's the biggest chore ever.
• 42:51
You're just sitting there going, okay, I know I have to eat this.
• 42:53
  And I love food normally.
• 42:54
I'm all about eat all the food all the time.
• 42:57
  But yeah, on competition day.
• 42:59
So I found by that 5.30, I'm like, I'm shot.
• 43:01
I've just been nervous all day now.
• 43:04
  Now it's time to compete.
• 43:05
And we're in the back and Brandon's asking me my...
• 43:08
He's asking me my strategy, which he very politely said, well, you should go ahead and try that.
• 43:13
But if it were the games, we would not be doing that strategy.
• 43:18
So then I got all nervous about my choices.
• 43:22
So yeah, I think it was just having to wait all day to compete was, that's a whole new learning curve too, right?
• 43:27
Like what am I going to do to distract myself or not get more nervous?
• 43:31
But that was a really fun workout.
• 43:33
All these events were like, I really enjoyed the events themselves.
• 43:35
  They were super fun though.
• 43:37
  Yeah.
• 43:38
You're the first person to say it was fun navigating all the college students.
• 43:43
  I don't mind.
• 43:45
  I think it's hilarious.
• 43:47
Look it, I've lived in a van.
• 43:49
  I've gotten out of dumpster.
• 43:50
Like you just, you adapt as you go.
• 43:52
Is it the most ideal situation?
• 43:54
  No, probably not.
• 43:55
But I'm just, you know, you just kind of keep figuring it out.
• 43:59
We, um, we actually, I did a lot of warmup out by the pool.
• 44:03
Um, they had dumbbells out back there and there was some bikes and stuff like that.
• 44:06
So I kind of, we did a lot back there when it was a dumbbell workout and stuff like that.
• 44:09
So you just kind of, you moved around, you made it work.
• 44:13
  Yeah.
• 44:14
Did you, did you come to the venue early in the day or did you wait to show up till just.
• 44:19
  I came in.
• 44:21
  This is hilarious.
• 44:21
  Cause the parking, right.
• 44:22
  Yeah.
• 44:22
I heard you talk about like the parking is not.
• 44:24
So my dad would drive us and drop us cause the seats were so short.
• 44:28
So we had a friend here on Dean who's from the Island and she was competing in the 60 to 64.
• 44:33
And so he would literally drop us at the curb and wait for us.
• 44:36
And we'd run in and go watch the heat and then come out and drive away because, you know, every time you went to that parking garage, it cost you.
• 44:43
  Yes.
• 44:45
so i did come and watch on dean and i don't that one i oh i don't think that was helpful for me because i just got super like antsy watching her and everybody looked like they were like it was a struggle like that workout so i'm like this is not making me feel better but yeah so we came and popped in and popped out i my pd got it just got here so i got her on it was super nice to meet you and chatting with you i'll catch up later i'll re-watch dress this
• 45:14
  Sounds good.
• 45:15
  Have a good one, Jamie.
• 45:16
Oh, if I leave Scott, is it, I can't push that, right?
• 45:19
How do I get out of here?
• 45:21
  I'll kick you out.
• 45:22
  Okay, cool.
• 45:26
  Uh, yeah, did it.
• 45:30
  Sure.
• 45:30
  I will.
• 45:32
  I'll figure it out.
• 45:34
Um, but we'll just go on.
• 45:36
  Yeah.
• 45:37
Um, so then you go to another one bites the dust, um,
• 45:41
And you talk about redemption because at the games you struggled with handstand walk.
• 45:47
  Yeah.
• 45:48
There was no real... I forget what we had.
• 45:53
  It was a long section.
• 45:53
I don't know if it was 40 feet or... You had to go unbroken.
• 45:57
  And so I...
• 45:58
pretty much led that whole chipper.
• 46:00
It was a gymnastic chipper down and back, got off the box jumps.
• 46:03
I'm the first one to the handstand walk.
• 46:05
All I have to do is walk that section of handstand walk and I take a first.
• 46:09
So I get probably halfway through and I just stall out.
• 46:12
  Like I've just not like,
• 46:14
  Balance point gone.
• 46:15
  I just freeze.
• 46:15
I'm almost holding a handstand for a bit.
• 46:17
And then I fall back over and I'm like, okay.
• 46:19
And so then Kelly for real goes ahead, passes me and finishes.
• 46:22
I tried a second time and same thing.
• 46:25
I just freeze and then end up having to come back.
• 46:29
And then the third time I kick up and another one kicks up beside me at the same time, Laura, and she ends up handstand walking faster than me.
• 46:37
By this time, my shoulders are like tired because I've been doing it like three different times.
• 46:42
And she actually passes me on the handstand walk.
• 46:43
And at least this time I finish and I finished third in that.
• 46:46
And so it was just super frustrating when you're like, oh, man, like it just felt like the execution wasn't wasn't quite there.
• 46:52
And so was concerned, honestly, coming into a handstand walk workout.
• 46:57
  Will this work?
• 46:57
you know, will it, will we have a problem again or what's going to happen?
• 47:00
So the handstand walk actually went really well this time and enjoyed it.
• 47:05
So that's, that was a little bit of redemption.
• 47:10
  So that's important, right?
• 47:12
Like that you get the redemption for something that you're trying to overcome.
• 47:16
  Totally.
• 47:17
  And that's a good thing.
• 47:18
Yeah, it's another one of those data points, right?
• 47:20
Where you're like, okay, I actually can do this.
• 47:22
  It's okay.
• 47:22
Otherwise, you kind of have this memory in the back of your head.
• 47:24
  Right.
• 47:27
And we already talked about the final two events, the back-to-backers.
• 47:31
You and Jamie kind of talked about that.
• 47:33
  So you end up winning...
• 47:35
so in your two competitions as a elite CrossFitter, you have taken a second at the games and you won legends.
• 47:46
Is there any, is there any fear of like falling from that?
• 47:51
Or do you still look at it as like, this is a learning experience and I'm just trying to figure it all out.
• 47:57
  Yeah.
• 47:58
  A hundred percent.
• 47:58
  I mean, I think,
• 48:01
it's really easy to go, Oh, I did this good.
• 48:04
So I have to keep doing this good.
• 48:06
Um, and what will people think and all of that?
• 48:08
But then the moment I say, what will people think there's like a, well, that's not why I'm doing this, right?
• 48:13
Like I'm trying to do this to be the best version of myself and get better and do my best and step out onto that floor and enjoy it and see what the human body, my human body is capable of.
• 48:23
And that's going to come with ups and downs.
• 48:25
  Like I, I,
• 48:26
I don't think it's always going to be perfect, you know, by any means.
• 48:29
And I think we'll see how the journey continues, but yeah, I feel like when that stuff comes up, I'm like, I'm probably just stuck on my ego anyway, if I'm worried about what will, cause it's mostly about, well, let's say I take a 20th place or something like, oh gosh, like it doesn't change who I am.
• 48:47
  Right.
• 48:48
  It's just that perception.
• 48:49
You get that fear of like, well, what will people think if I take a 20th?
• 48:52
  It's like,
• 48:54
I don't know, at the end of the day, does it matter?
• 48:55
So, so I think it's just trying to stay true to, you know, he's, this is who I am and, and, and it's been an amazing ride so far, but, um, yeah, I, I imagine there will be challenges.
• 49:06
So this allows for a great transition.
• 49:08
You talk about your faith, you talk about your journey with God, how much of that helps you with like keeping the ego down and that how important is this in the grand scheme of things?
• 49:22
  Yeah.
• 49:24
So I guess for me, I just believe like we're all created to do something on this planet that matters.
• 49:30
  whatever that looks like, right?
• 49:31
It could be telling people stories like you're doing, like, and highlighting people and, you know, all of those things.
• 49:36
And so whatever it is, I think we're all on a journey to discover what that, you know, God given gift talent is.
• 49:44
And then to be able to use that to glorify God is kind of where I come from.
• 49:49
And so at the end of the day, I think I can still lose in some regards and still glorify God.
• 49:54
Like it's, how did I present myself?
• 49:57
you know, it's really important to me to see those judges.
• 50:00
When I come out onto the floor, it's important to me to see the people around me and all of that.
• 50:04
Like, am I, you know, like, I don't, I'm not interested in winning the CrossFit games and being a jerk, you know?
• 50:10
  So I think it's that where it's like, it's, it's bigger picture.
• 50:13
It isn't just about the competition.
• 50:16
  It's about life.
• 50:17
And did we make connections and did we make the world a better place?
• 50:19
And did we love on some people?
• 50:21
  Did we bring some joy?
• 50:22
All of those things kind of matters to me for sure.
• 50:26
  And so,
• 50:27
I think, yeah, at the end of the day, if you're going to have high highs and low lows, I mean, God's still there.
• 50:32
  God still loves me.
• 50:33
I still get to walk this journey with him.
• 50:35
And we all have ups and downs.
• 50:36
And that's part of like the beauty of walking out your faith is he's there in the highest of times and he's there in the lowest times and he's there in the mundane stuff.
• 50:45
  Right.
• 50:46
Like it's I think it's all encompassing for sure.
• 50:52
I think that you and Ariel Lowen are very similar when I talk about the way you present yourself on the floor.
• 51:02
The glorifying God is a big thing.
• 51:05
I remember her first games hitting lifts in the middle of a workout.
• 51:11
where she had to like turn and run and she's celebrating the lift in the middle, like, because she's, she's just so grateful to be there and blessed to, to have that moment.
• 51:22
  Yeah.
• 51:23
That, that would sum up being in the competition on the, like all of it.
• 51:27
Like I'm, you know, I feel so blessed by like Joe and Bob and these ones that organize this, like they don't have to do that for us.
• 51:35
  You know what I mean?
• 51:35
  But they do.
• 51:36
And then I think that's part of the puzzle.
• 51:37
Like they're creating this amazing experience for people.
• 51:41
So for me to be up in arms and complain about it, and I'm like, are you kidding me?
• 51:44
  Like, this is incredible.
• 51:45
Like we get to go out there and do these things that so many people don't get to try and to do to push our bodies into this space.
• 51:52
And there's such a huge satisfaction.
• 51:54
Like, you know, you know, you do a hard workout and you just feel incredible after you're like, wow, like it sucked during it kind of wanted to die.
• 52:01
But at the other side of it, it's like, no, we we're stronger than we think we're more resilient.
• 52:05
We can, you know, do all these things.
• 52:07
  And so, yeah, for sure.
• 52:09
So grateful that I like, this is my life.
• 52:11
I get to work out and stuff like it's, it's pretty wild.
• 52:15
Well, then you turn it into a podcast.
• 52:18
  Yeah.
• 52:20
So you were a podcaster as well.
• 52:22
A little different style, but yes.
• 52:25
  Very, very different.
• 52:27
And it is called cultivate connection.
• 52:29
  Yep.
• 52:30
  Yep.
• 52:31
So if people want to check that out, it's about growing your relationship with God.
• 52:37
  Yeah.
• 52:37
So basically it's, it's just helping people to meditate on the word of God.
• 52:41
So the, you know, if you're a believer, the word of God is very important and to be able to meditate on that and sit with that and then just encounter God through his word.
• 52:49
And so it's just 30 minutes where it literally leads you through a guided meditation, focusing on different scriptures and stuff like that.
• 52:55
And so it's just, it's just helping people carve out that little bit of space, you know, like we're so distracted and busy.
• 53:01
Sometimes it's helpful to have someone kind of guide you down that path for sure.
• 53:04
  Yeah.
• 53:06
  Yeah.
• 53:09
I've tried to find ways to use my platform to glorify God like you talk about.
• 53:14
We did a Bible study and then like life gets in the way and I beat myself up because I let it.
• 53:23
  Sure.
• 53:24
  Right?
• 53:24
  Sure.
• 53:25
And I struggle with that like all the time.
• 53:29
And it's going to be an attempt going into the new year to do this, to do it again, figure out a way to do it again and carve it out.
• 53:38
So what what called you to use a podcast medium to to share this with the world?
• 53:47
  Yeah.
• 53:49
So I told you I did like a journey into yoga and it was actually a faith based yoga ministry.
• 53:55
So it was about kind of moving your body and connecting with the Lord through yoga, through meditation, through kind of all of those avenues.
• 54:01
And so that's what introduced me to it.
• 54:04
And when I was at one of the training seminars, there was something just in me, like just the rising up when someone was leading a meditation, all of a sudden I just heard this, I want to do that.
• 54:13
And I'm like, it was almost like an internal external thing.
• 54:15
And I'm like, I want to do what?
• 54:16
And so the woman was just leading people in meditation.
• 54:19
And so I just explored it.
• 54:22
And so I love leading people into just like the presence of God or just into that space where they can acknowledge his presence and be more connected and all of that.
• 54:32
  And so it made sense.
• 54:33
I first started like a, it was just like a, oh gosh, just so many years ago, like a little webinar call or whatever.
• 54:38
Like people would just get on the phone conference call and I would lead them that way.
• 54:41
And then one of the women asked if we could record it so that we could, so they could listen to it more than once.
• 54:47
And I was like, well, if I'm going to record them, I might as well record them on my own.
• 54:50
Cause it's kind of a personal journey.
• 54:51
Like I don't actually need to be there with you.
• 54:54
You just need to have that space of connection with the Lord.
• 54:56
And so I just started recording them and I was so reluctant.
• 54:59
I'm like, I started putting them on iTunes just to have somewhere to store them, but I didn't even tell anyone they were on iTunes.
• 55:04
Like it was just a small group of women that were using them.
• 55:07
And then it just kind of started to grow from there.
• 55:09
  So, um,
• 55:13
basically that it's been, I gosh, probably eight years I've been doing this.
• 55:16
It's just become a habit now.
• 55:17
And I think more for me too, like even recording them, it's, it's just a space for me to connect with the Lord as well.
• 55:22
And so that's kind of where that event has just continued to grow.
• 55:25
And then just doing some like one-on-one mentorship with people and even group kind of spiritual mentorship has been happening in the last year too.
• 55:33
And I'm loving that just teaching people more about prayer and connection and all that stuff.
• 55:37
  So
• 55:38
So Jeffrey Birchfield asks, do you differentiate between prayer and meditation?
• 55:44
I think they could overlap for sure.
• 55:47
Meditating is kind of, I guess the true definition is just like this idea of pondering or chewing on or just sitting with something over and over again, which that could be a style of prayer, right?
• 55:56
To just sit on those things and pray.
• 55:59
Where prayer has many styles, like we can have silent prayers or we can
• 56:04
have declarations that we're praying or different things like that.
• 56:07
So I think they could definitely overlap for sure.
• 56:09
But yeah, that meditation is more just kind of that pondering.
• 56:13
I always tell people that don't know how to meditate.
• 56:15
I'm like, well, have you ever worried about something?
• 56:18
And it's that idea, like you just, you keep going over it in your head, right?
• 56:21
Like you just again and again and again, and you're worrying.
• 56:23
Okay, so you're meditating right now.
• 56:25
You're just meditating on something negative, which comes out as worry.
• 56:29
So in the other realm, like if we were to meditate on something positive, it would just be, we just sit with it and continue to kind of roll that over or chew on it in that kind of a fashion, if that makes sense.
• 56:41
Yeah, it makes perfect sense to me.
• 56:43
And I think that's why I have a hard time.
• 56:47
So I've read the Bible a couple of times.
• 56:48
I get through parts and then I want to meditate on it.
• 56:52
I want to turn over and over this part that I just read.
• 56:56
So then it takes me forever to get from point A to point B.
• 57:01
  Yeah.
• 57:01
  Yeah.
• 57:01
  Well getting through.
• 57:03
  I don't think it's a race.
• 57:05
  Right.
• 57:06
  Right.
• 57:06
  That's what I said.
• 57:07
Like I need to give myself permission that that's okay.
• 57:10
  Yeah.
• 57:11
  It can be hard.
• 57:11
Like the whole read the Bible in one year.
• 57:13
  It's cool.
• 57:13
Like I think try it out, but I would say sometimes it's nice to give yourself a lot of space and room where you're like, no, I actually want to sit with this.
• 57:22
You know, there could be times where I could just sit with that same book of the Bible or like for months.
• 57:26
  Right.
• 57:27
You just keep kind of hanging out in there.
• 57:29
  Right.
• 57:29
So yeah, there's different approaches for sure.
• 57:32
so that was our Bible study was Bible in a year.
• 57:35
Um, what happened to me is just as we were reading the story of Joshua, um, and, and going into Jericho and doing all that stuff, the, the unrest in the middle East took off.
• 57:52
And I'm like, here we are thousands of years later.
• 57:55
And the same thing is happening.
• 57:58
  Yeah.
• 57:59
And like, I just, I just got stuck there.
• 58:02
  Right.
• 58:04
And, and, and my mind couldn't get off of that piece.
• 58:08
And so I would, if I were, I just lean into it.
• 58:11
Do you know what I mean?
• 58:12
Like so many of those things are invitations for me.
• 58:14
  Everything is about relationship.
• 58:16
So reading the word, isn't just to study the word.
• 58:18
It's the, the Bible is like, I've heard someone say, it's the only book that you read and the author shows up.
• 58:25
  Right.
• 58:25
So the whole point of this is that it journeys you into relationship with Jesus.
• 58:29
And so if he's highlighting that on your heart and you're sitting stuck there, there might be a reason that he wants to journey with you in that.
• 58:35
He wants to meet you in it.
• 58:37
  Right.
• 58:37
And so you can begin to have that conversation.
• 58:39
So but I get it because you've said that.
• 58:41
But this is what we're doing.
• 58:43
We're going through the Bible one year and I'm stuck here.
• 58:45
And I would say, no, I wonder if that's just not a tangent where God's saying, hey, Scott, come on over here.
• 58:50
I want to show you a couple of things about this.
• 58:52
  So I could be wrong.
• 58:54
  Yeah.
• 58:55
  Yeah.
• 58:56
  I think you're right.
• 58:57
I think that in my, I'm having a lot of conflict in my head about the whole piece and I just need, I need to lean into it until I can get past that.
• 59:09
  Absolutely.
• 59:11
Well, I have to say this has been just a tremendous joy for me talking to you.
• 59:17
  I love your attitude.
• 59:18
I love the way you compete.
• 59:21
It was so great to see you in person.
• 59:26
Watching you at the games, watching you at Legends, and getting to meet you personally has been awesome.
• 59:32
Gosh, I want to have you back again throughout the season.
• 59:36
  Absolutely.
• 59:37
  It's been fun.
• 59:39
  Yeah, great conversation.
• 59:41
But I kept these at an hour just so everybody can get back to their day.
• 59:45
And with that, thank you everybody in the chat for being here.
• 59:49
  Amy is awesome.
• 59:50
We'll have her back for sure.
• 59:52
And we'll catch everybody next time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
• 59:56
  Bye, guys.
