A Montpelier man, Daniel Lawson, 62, has been sentenced to a year of probation and community service after pleading guilty to misdemeanor financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The abuse began in 2019, when the victim—diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s—granted Lawson power of attorney, despite another family member already holding that role. Lawson allegedly used this authority to secretly transfer property rights and attempt a reverse mortgage on the family home, even after the power of attorney was revoked.
