- 0:07Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia. It's Tuesday, September 29th. This is the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills news hit.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing you everything
- 0:19Speaker 1: you need to know before you start your day. Let's
- 0:21Speaker 1: get right into it. Head coach Joe Brady met with
- 0:26Speaker 1: reporters on Monday afternoon to break down what he saw
- 0:28Speaker 1: from Sunday's 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. On
- 0:33Speaker 1: the injury front, Brady said quarterback Josh Allen is dealing
- 0:35Speaker 1: with standard day-after bumps and bruises, but he's no long-term
- 0:39Speaker 1: concerns about Allen's availability for Week 4. Brady added that
- 0:43Speaker 1: the medical staff will continue to evaluate cornerback Christian Benford
- 0:46Speaker 1: and the rest of the banged-up roster over the next
- 0:48Speaker 1: couple of days. Addressing Buffalo's five turnovers, Brady took full ownership,
- 0:54Speaker 1: stating that any ball security issues that show up on
- 0:56Speaker 1: game day is either being coached or allowed by him.
- 0:59Speaker 1: He broke down the interceptions, taking blame for a poor
- 1:02Speaker 1: play on one and noting that Allen threw into coverage
- 1:05Speaker 1: on another, believing that the defensive tackle was offsides and
- 1:08Speaker 1: it was a free play. On the fumbles, Brady emphasized
- 1:11Speaker 1: that ball security needs to be more intentional. While he
- 1:14Speaker 1: praised Dalton Kincaid for his electric run after catchability, he
- 1:17Speaker 1: stressed that when the ball carriers failed to tuck the
- 1:19Speaker 1: ball while fighting for extra yards, trailing defenders will strip
- 1:22Speaker 1: it away every time. He firmly stated that if the
- 1:25Speaker 1: turnover bug shows up again next week, the team will
- 1:27Speaker 1: not get another win. When asked about going for it
- 1:31Speaker 1: on 4th down, Brady stood by his 4th down decision making,
- 1:34Speaker 1: explaining that going for it on 4th and 6th at
- 1:36Speaker 1: midfield was the clear-cut choice given how well the defense
- 1:39Speaker 1: was playing. He noted that hesitation on 4th down calls
- 1:42Speaker 1: burns the clock and creates doubt on the field. He
- 1:46Speaker 1: also touched on the goal line package featuring Dawson Knox
- 1:49Speaker 1: taking the direct snap for a sneak. While admitting that
- 1:51Speaker 1: executing direct snaps and full-speed game action is a learning process,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Brady likes the physical element it brings and plans to
- 1:57Speaker 1: keep expanding on their short yard menu to keep defenses guessing.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Brady gave heavy praise to cornerbacks Davidson, Igmenosa, and Maxwell
- 2:05Speaker 1: Harrison for stepping up when Christian Benford went down. Despite
- 2:09Speaker 1: Harrison wanting a goal-line chance at an interception back, Brady
- 2:12Speaker 1: loved how both young cornerbacks competed in single coverage, trusting
- 2:15Speaker 1: their run fits, and played with confidence when the Chargers
- 2:18Speaker 1: challenged them downfield. When asked about more on the defensive
- 2:22Speaker 1: side of the ball, Brady said that the offense lacked
- 2:24Speaker 1: its fastball on Sunday, but that Jim Leonard's defense stepped
- 2:27Speaker 1: up with an elite performance to secure the win. He
- 2:30Speaker 1: singled out edge rusher Greg Rousseau, who notched his sixth
- 2:32Speaker 1: sack of the season, and credited veteran linebacker Bradley Chubb
- 2:35Speaker 1: with a massive leadership impact on Rousseau's confidence and technique.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Brady challenged Rousseau to avoid complacency now that opposing offensive
- 2:43Speaker 1: line coaches will begin game planning specifically to double-team him.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Brady also praised running back Ty Johnson for stepping up
- 2:51Speaker 1: in his first action back from injury, calling Johnson a
- 2:53Speaker 1: dynamic piece who simply makes plays whenever the ball finds him.
- 2:57Speaker 1: He also mentioned running back Ray Davis, saying Davis has
- 2:59Speaker 1: worked too hard to sit on the bench and needs
- 3:01Speaker 1: to be worked into the rotation to keep the backfield
- 3:04Speaker 1: fresh for a long season.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Defensive coordinator Jim Leonard also spoke to the media on
- 3:10Speaker 2: Monday afternoon to break down what he saw from his
- 3:13Speaker 2: defense in Buffalo's victory over the Chargers. He was first
- 3:17Speaker 2: asked about rookie Davison Igbenoson stepping up due to the
- 3:21Speaker 2: toe injury of Christian Benford. Leonard said the rookie corner
- 3:25Speaker 2: stepped up in a big way, explaining that he doesn't
- 3:28Speaker 2: want a player's first snaps to be when they're needed
- 3:31Speaker 2: for injury purposes, explaining why IGB has been rotated in
- 3:35Speaker 2: during the first couple games of the season. Leonard complimented
- 3:39Speaker 2: the rookie's tackling ability and pass breakup down the field
- 3:42Speaker 2: while covering Quentin Johnston one-on-one. The story of the defense
- 3:47Speaker 2: has been Greg Rousseau, so naturally Leonard spent a long
- 3:50Speaker 2: time answering questions about the edge rusher and his six
- 3:53Speaker 2: sacks so far to start the season. Leonard mentioned his
- 3:57Speaker 2: ability to win consistently with his power and length, allowing
- 4:00Speaker 2: Rousseau to affect the pocket with consistency. He also mentioned
- 4:04Speaker 2: that Groot has been impressive defending the run, not just
- 4:07Speaker 2: as a pass rusher. He mentioned the biggest thing they're
- 4:11Speaker 2: asking him to do differently compared to previous years is
- 4:13Speaker 2: comes down to alignment and where he's located in the formation.
- 4:18Speaker 2: This allows Rousseau to take advantage of his size and
- 4:20Speaker 2: his strength and gives him more of an opportunity to
- 4:23Speaker 2: generate wins against offensive tackles. Leonard acknowledged that Rousseau is
- 4:27Speaker 2: on a heater, but you never know when those are
- 4:30Speaker 2: going to end. But he's playing with a ton of
- 4:32Speaker 2: confidence and trusting what his coaches are asking him to do.
- 4:36Speaker 2: When asked how you maintain that momentum for Rousseau, Leonard
- 4:40Speaker 2: pointed to the other guys lined up next to him
- 4:42Speaker 2: on the trenches. specifically mentioning names like Deion Walker, Ed Oliver,
- 4:46Speaker 2: Bradley Chubb, and Michael Hoyt. If all of those guys
- 4:49Speaker 2: can keep doing their job successfully, the offense can't get
- 4:53Speaker 2: away with focusing on just Rousseau and instead have to
- 4:56Speaker 2: focus on pass blocking all of those talented pass rushers.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Leonard also acknowledged that the run defense has been inconsistent
- 5:03Speaker 2: to start the year, but also mentioned that running the
- 5:06Speaker 2: football is something the Chargers do well with their angles
- 5:08Speaker 2: and creativity in the run game. His number one thing
- 5:12Speaker 2: for the defense to focus on is tackling, which was
- 5:15Speaker 2: up and down against the Chargers, according to him. He
- 5:18Speaker 2: said there's a lot of positives to build off of
- 5:20Speaker 2: in that category and only a handful of plays where
- 5:23Speaker 2: the defense needs to trust each other to be in
- 5:25Speaker 2: the right spot to make the play. Next week, the
- 5:28Speaker 2: Bills take on Drake May and the Patriots. And May
- 5:31Speaker 2: obviously hasn't looked like his MVP self from last season,
- 5:34Speaker 2: but Leonard acknowledged that last year he was dynamic and
- 5:37Speaker 2: playing at an extremely high level. Leonard said, you can
- 5:40Speaker 2: tell that he's going through some stuff and that he's struggling,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but you know that good players will get out of
- 5:45Speaker 2: that struggle eventually. And you just hope that you've already
- 5:48Speaker 2: played them by the time that they get out of it.
- 5:51Speaker 2: The Bills were flagged twice for roughing the passer on Sunday.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And Leonard said the first call, which was on Bradley Chubb,
- 5:57Speaker 2: is going to be called a penalty every time. And
- 5:58Speaker 2: that Bradley knows that and would be the first to
- 6:00Speaker 2: admit that. The other call on Rousseau, though, Leonard said
- 6:03Speaker 2: that there's only so much that a defender can do,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and he thought Rousseau was in a tough situation when
- 6:08Speaker 2: it comes to sacking the quarterback. Buffalo's first pick in
- 6:11Speaker 2: the draft, TJ Parker, only played nine defensive snaps against L.A.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Leonard said it was a bit situational and also a
- 6:18Speaker 2: bit difficult to take Rousseau and Chubb off the field
- 6:20Speaker 2: for someone as inexperienced as Parker, but he added that
- 6:24Speaker 2: hopefully the rookie will be able to get on the
- 6:26Speaker 2: field more next week against the Patriots.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael also met with the media on
- 6:31Speaker 1: Monday afternoon. Echoing Joe Brady's postgame assessment that the offense
- 6:35Speaker 1: lacked its fastball, Carmichael stressed that coming away with the
- 6:38Speaker 1: victory while having so much to clean up is a
- 6:40Speaker 1: valuable teaching moment. When asked about James Cook's fumble, Carmichael
- 6:45Speaker 1: acknowledged Cook's electric playmaking ability, but made it clear that
- 6:48Speaker 1: ball security issues cannot continue. He noted that the coaching
- 6:51Speaker 1: staff will reevaluate practice drills and fundamentals this week to
- 6:54Speaker 1: ensure that all ball carriers protect the football when they're
- 6:57Speaker 1: fighting through contact. Carmichael praised Josh Allen's professionalism after a
- 7:02Speaker 1: tough outing, noting that Allen and the staff spent the
- 7:05Speaker 1: last 24 hours reviewing the film and communicating openly about
- 7:08Speaker 1: read progressions and decision-making. He also praised Joe Brady's zero-hesitation
- 7:13Speaker 1: approach on fourth down calls, saying Brady scripts situational scenarios
- 7:17Speaker 1: all week so that the entire offense knows the plan
- 7:19Speaker 1: before hitting the field. During games, Carmichael's role on the
- 7:22Speaker 1: headset is to review the series trends with Brady and
- 7:25Speaker 1: prepare for play-call options on upcoming possessions. He addressed Allen's
- 7:30Speaker 1: postgame comments about needing to target Khalil Shakir more consistently.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He explained that while several play calls had Shakir as
- 7:37Speaker 1: the primary read, the Chargers altered the looks, forcing Allen
- 7:40Speaker 1: to progress elsewhere. He also backed up Joe Brady's goal
- 7:43Speaker 1: of working in running back Ray Davis into the rotation
- 7:46Speaker 1: alongside James Cook and Ty Johnson, confirming that specific packages
- 7:50Speaker 1: for Davis are on the call sheet and they just
- 7:51Speaker 1: need to be dialed up during the game. When asked
- 7:54Speaker 1: about the penalties this weekend, Carmichael pointed out that Buffalo
- 7:57Speaker 1: committed six offensive penalties against the Chargers. He emphasized that
- 8:01Speaker 1: pre-snap flags and technique breakdowns are non-winning football traits that
- 8:04Speaker 1: must be fixed. Looking ahead to Week 4 against New England,
- 8:08Speaker 1: Carmichael warned that Mike Vrabel and the Patriots present a
- 8:10Speaker 1: massive defensive challenge, highlighting the disruptive front, physical secondary, and
- 8:15Speaker 1: elite tackling ability.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Stat of the Day The Bills have started their Season
- 8:21Speaker 2: 3-0 for the third year in a row. The only
- 8:24Speaker 2: other teams to have three straight seasons starting 3-0 are
- 8:27Speaker 2: the 2017-2020 Chiefs and 05-07 Indianapolis Colts. Both of those
- 8:33Speaker 2: teams won a Super Bowl in that span.
- 8:36Speaker 1: That's going to do it for us today on The
- 8:37Speaker 1: Morning Charge. Do us a quick favor, hit that subscribe button,
- 8:41Speaker 1: leave a five-star review if you're enjoying the show, and
- 8:44Speaker 1: share this with a fellow Bills fan. For Colin Ritchie,
