- 0:05Speaker 1: and Sarah McLeod. Jimmy Barnes is back in town. Tickets
- 0:09Speaker 1: are on sale, by the way, today from Ticketmaster. Good morning,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jimmy Barnes.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Morning, Jimmy. How are you guys?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Nice to talk to you. Very well. Very well.
- 0:18Speaker 2: It's always good to get back to Perth. We've been
- 0:20Speaker 2: doing some cracking shows over there the last few years. Yeah.
- 0:23Speaker 2: And every time we... Down we go, we have a ball,
- 0:25Speaker 2: so we're looking forward to it.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Early December is always such a nice time of year
- 0:28Speaker 1: to be here. You have had an incredible career spanning
- 0:32Speaker 1: more than four decades. That makes us all feel old.
- 0:34Speaker 1: What still gives you that buzz? I hate to say it.
- 0:37Speaker 1: what still gives you that buzz when you're walking on stage.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Uh you know listen i just love i love singing
- 0:44Speaker 2: there's something you know i love singing full stop but
- 0:46Speaker 2: i mean there's something about getting in front of a
- 0:48Speaker 2: crowd that makes me work harder makes me makes me
- 0:51Speaker 2: and it's not showing off it's trying to dig deeper
- 0:53Speaker 2: in myself to to to to get you know to
- 0:56Speaker 2: connect with people and and that that energy that i
- 0:59Speaker 2: get from from an audience is just something you don't
- 1:01Speaker 2: get anywhere else so It's joyous. It's a joyous thing.
- 1:05Speaker 2: The other thing is, you know, like whenever you're playing
- 1:08Speaker 2: shows live, every time you go out live, you want
- 1:10Speaker 2: to be a better singer. So I think that sort
- 1:13Speaker 2: of keeps me pushing myself, keeps me trying to grow,
- 1:16Speaker 2: trying to learn. You know, hopefully by the time I'm 80,
- 1:18Speaker 2: I'll have learned how.
- 1:19Speaker 1: To do this.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Well, you talk about pushing yourself on stage, but you're
- 1:23Speaker 3: certainly pushing yourself in the studio too, because as I'm
- 1:26Speaker 3: sure you're well aware... You're going to need to build
- 1:28Speaker 3: a new wall. You hold the record for 22 Australian
- 1:33Speaker 3: number one albums. No one's even close.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Listen, who cares? No, listen, I do care. I'm very competitive. No, listen,
- 1:43Speaker 2: I just like, you know, the main reason I make
- 1:45Speaker 2: records is once again so I can go out and
- 1:47Speaker 2: play live. So if I make a record that connects
- 1:49Speaker 2: with people, that means I've got new songs to put
- 1:51Speaker 2: in my live set. It makes the live set more interesting. And,
- 1:53Speaker 2: you know, and there's something, you know, it's, you know,
- 1:57Speaker 2: we all, it's sort of about telling your story, you know.
- 1:59Speaker 2: It's funny, I write a song and I'll write, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: I'll perform a song, you know, whether it's Lay Down
- 2:05Speaker 2: Your Guns or it's, you know, K-San or it's any
- 2:07Speaker 2: song that I perform. It means something to me, but
- 2:11Speaker 2: everybody has their own meaning. It makes their own, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: attaches their own meaning to the song. So it's about
- 2:17Speaker 2: telling stories that connect with people. And so, you know,
- 2:19Speaker 2: making albums is what does that. And the fact that
- 2:22Speaker 2: they still sell, I think, is a blessing. You know,
- 2:24Speaker 2: I don't take it lightly, believe me.
- 2:25Speaker 1: One of the things that I notice it shows now is,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you know, I'm there with my sister and now with
- 2:33Speaker 1: my nieces and now with my.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Nieces' kids.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We're talking three generations.
- 2:38Speaker 1: What is that like for you to look out and
- 2:40Speaker 1: see that diversity in the crowd?
- 2:43Speaker 2: It's pretty special. I mean, literally, we see, you know, like...
- 2:47Speaker 2: On that last, the Colchisle 50th tour, this is an example.
- 2:51Speaker 2: There was literally little kids on parents' shoulders standing next
- 2:55Speaker 2: to their parents. And there was one show we did
- 2:58Speaker 2: in Sydney in the circus tent. This is a true story.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We finished the show and went backstage and had a
- 3:07Speaker 2: cool down and all that. And I came out to
- 3:09Speaker 2: get something I'd left on stage. And there was two
- 3:11Speaker 2: ladies who had been down the front and they had
- 3:13Speaker 2: walking frames, right?
- 3:15Speaker 1: They were.
- 3:16Speaker 2: In their 90s, right? Oh, okay. They waited until everybody
- 3:19Speaker 2: left so they could get out. And so I went
- 3:21Speaker 2: over and said, what's going on, ladies? And they said,
- 3:24Speaker 2: you know, like 50 years ago when Cold Chisel were
- 3:27Speaker 2: a young band playing in Melbourne, you know, and at
- 3:30Speaker 2: that point I was 20 or something. They were in
- 3:34Speaker 2: their 40s and they discovered Cold Chisel 50 years ago
- 3:38Speaker 2: and they'd been fans ever since and they were in
- 3:41Speaker 2: the front row of the crowd with walking frames.
- 3:43Speaker 1: That is amazing. Everything. That is so good.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a bit hard at a dance.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Kids on shoulder, something that we didn't see in the
- 3:54Speaker 3: last stand concerts, that's for sure.
- 3:57Speaker 2: And the other thing is, I did literally, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: when we did the last, we did the last return
- 4:03Speaker 2: to the last stand, really, when they closed down the
- 4:05Speaker 2: entertainment center in Sydney, and there was people buying the
- 4:08Speaker 2: same seats and taking their kids. So they all had
- 4:10Speaker 2: the exact same seats that they went to the last
- 4:12Speaker 2: stand in 1983. It's really, it's a lovely thing that,
- 4:15Speaker 2: you know, and I sort of joke with, when all
- 4:18Speaker 2: these kids come to me and say, oh, my parents
- 4:19Speaker 2: play your music to me, I go, oh, you've been brainwashed.
- 4:23Speaker 3: But you're happy about it.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'm glad, I'm glad they're brainwashed. But, you know, that's
- 4:28Speaker 2: funny how, like, you know, I mean, good songs seem
- 4:31Speaker 2: to translate and seem to carry and are timeless. And
- 4:33Speaker 2: that's the thing, you know.
- 4:34Speaker 1: It is. Something else that you've conquered in recent times,
- 4:38Speaker 1: being an author and, you know, the stories of your life,
- 4:42Speaker 1: the cookbooks and just the little vignette stories, which I
- 4:46Speaker 1: absolutely adore. You obviously really enjoy the storytelling in whatever,
- 4:51Speaker 1: you know, format it comes.
- 4:52Speaker 2: I do. That sort of sprung from writing that first
- 4:56Speaker 2: working class boy thing. was something I had to write
- 4:59Speaker 2: just because it was going to save that saved my
- 5:01Speaker 2: life you know getting all that stuff out um but
- 5:04Speaker 2: from from that sprung this just enjoyment where I sit
- 5:07Speaker 2: at my computer like right where I am now and
- 5:10Speaker 2: and and and I go into myself and write and
- 5:13Speaker 2: and think of stories about you know the past and
- 5:15Speaker 2: it makes me relive a lot of stuff um as
- 5:18Speaker 2: opposed to you know normally I'm out screaming at everybody.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Yeah so it's a.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Different sort of energy for me But I've really, like,
- 5:24Speaker 2: the last lot of stories I've been writing have been, like,
- 5:26Speaker 2: a combination of fiction and nonfiction.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Okay.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Which is great because you can tell stories and blur
- 5:33Speaker 2: the lines. And, you know, it's to protect the cookie, right?
- 5:37Speaker 3: Well, that's partly because you did have to blur the
- 5:40Speaker 3: lines on some of the stories. Let's be honest. I'm sure, Jimmy.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And some of them were just already blurred from the beginning.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 5:48Speaker 2: No, but you can, you know, it's funny when you're
- 5:50Speaker 2: writing stories, you write stories and if you write, you know,
- 5:53Speaker 2: you think, oh, this is a funny story. Then you
- 5:54Speaker 2: read it and you go, ooh, such and such isn't
- 5:57Speaker 2: going to like this, you know? And so you sort
- 5:59Speaker 2: of go through and, you know, get everybody, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 2: check off, you know, who's going to like what. And
- 6:03Speaker 2: sort of just by changing a few little facts here
- 6:05Speaker 2: and there, I use the essence of the same story. And,
- 6:08Speaker 2: you know, and it's like, don't let the truth get
- 6:10Speaker 2: in the way of a good yarn, you know?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Kings Park, you're bringing a bunch of friends who
- 6:16Speaker 3: we all know and love. John Stevens, obviously solo of
- 6:20Speaker 3: Noiseworks fame. Eskimo Joe, roping in some locals. We like that.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Proper rock chick, Sarah.
- 6:27Speaker 3: And Sarah McLeod from Super Jesus.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Sarah's an Adelaide girl. I'm from Adelaide. Sarah
- 6:34Speaker 2: was probably the wildest girl in Adelaide. You know, she
- 6:36Speaker 2: was that wild. Her with Super Jesus was phenomenal. And
- 6:39Speaker 2: we've remained friends ever since. And she's just a great girl.
- 6:43Speaker 2: She's a bloody born rocker. You know, she goes hard
- 6:46Speaker 2: from the minute she gets there. So it's a great build.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I like to, when I talk about putting a build
- 6:53Speaker 2: together like this, every band's got to be better than
- 6:55Speaker 2: the next. Everybody's got to be as good as the next,
- 6:57Speaker 2: you know. I want every band to play great so
- 6:59Speaker 2: that by the time each band goes on, they're thinking,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I've got to be at the top of my game.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And that makes for a better show for the audience.
- 7:05Speaker 2: That's what That's what the plan is. All these bands
- 7:08Speaker 2: are going to push it. So I've got to be
- 7:09Speaker 2: really good by the time I go on.
- 7:11Speaker 3: All right.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Well, that's the plan. By the way, you look fabulously well.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It's good to see you in really good health.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 1: December 4 at Kings Park and Botanic Gardens, the plan
- 7:21Speaker 1: will come together. Tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Lovely to speak to you, Jimmy.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Nice to talk to you guys. All the best.
