Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22OK, after yesterday's kind of like legal slash political
- 0:27episode, I am bringing you just it's like a tried and true dumb
- 0:32Internet culture episode, like a light hearted fun episode for
- 0:37the most part. OK, let's just get straight into
- 0:40it. So the first story that I have
- 0:41for you guys today, TikTok in a new trend has been ignoring JoJo
- 0:46Siwa. So right now, TikTok users are
- 0:49boycotting engaging with JoJo Siwa's TikTok content as part of
- 0:54a new trend. This all started after a creator
- 0:56named Anita posted a video last week that ended up going super
- 1:00viral. In the video, Anita wrote bra,
- 1:03imagine if we all just started ignoring celebrities.
- 1:06Like how hilarious would it be if they posted and got like 13
- 1:09likes? That would actually be really
- 1:11funny. And TikTok users in her comment
- 1:13section decided that JoJo Siwa was going to be the first target
- 1:17of this trend. So Jojo's comment section now
- 1:21because of this is just filled with people commenting who's
- 1:25JoJo Siwa, and I thought we were ignoring her and things like
- 1:28that. That's basically as deep as this
- 1:31gets. Do I think that this trend is
- 1:33going to extend beyond JoJo? No, because this is a fleeting
- 1:37TikTok trend off the back of a viral video.
- 1:40That virality will die in the next day or two and I think it
- 1:44will unfortunately just be JoJo who is the victim of this trend.
- 1:50Poor JoJo. I feel like she will be
- 1:52perpetually trolled by the Internet unless she does some
- 1:57like really major like Miley Cyrus level rebrand.
- 2:02I know her karma era is supposed to be her rebrand into like her
- 2:06adulthood but I know I've talked about it a million times but
- 2:09obviously that is not what's happened right?
- 2:13She did not actually come out of character strip back show us who
- 2:17she really is. She stayed in character.
- 2:19She just became like an edgier more quote UN quote like adult
- 2:23version of her childhood character which is why she is so
- 2:27trolled. But I honestly don't think JoJo
- 2:30Siwa cares. I think she is living her best
- 2:32life. She's been famous for so long.
- 2:34She knows that, you know, drama and that kind of stuff, it
- 2:40sells. She is a multi, multi
- 2:42millionaire because of it. I don't think she gives a shit
- 2:46if she is staying relevant because she's being trolled or
- 2:48if she's staying relevant for other more, I guess legitimate
- 2:52career opportunities. I think to her it's all the same
- 2:56and she is just riding this wave right now.
- 2:58OK, the next story that I have for you guys is brain rot is
- 3:03Oxford Dictionary's word of the year.
- 3:06This is so insane. OK, so if you listen to this
- 3:10podcast, you obviously know what brain rot means, but here is how
- 3:14Oxford Dictionary is defining it.
- 3:16Brain rot is defined as quote, the supposed deterioration of a
- 3:19person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a
- 3:22result of overconsumption of material.
- 3:25Now particularly online content considered to be trivial or
- 3:29unchallenging. Also something characterized as
- 3:32likely to lead to such deterioration, they continued.
- 3:36Our experts noticed that brain rot gained new prominence this
- 3:39year as a term used to capture concerns about the impact of
- 3:42consuming excessive amounts of low quality online content,
- 3:46especially on social media. The term increase in usage
- 3:49frequency by 230% between 2023 and 2024.
- 3:54I'm not surprised at all. I don't know if it is just like
- 3:59my algorithm but not necessarily on TikTok, but like if I ever
- 4:04end up on reels, it is just brain rot central.
- 4:07It is like AI generated like mush and it will have literally
- 4:12the most amount of likes that I've ever seen in my entire
- 4:15life. The end of last year and into
- 4:17the beginning of this year was also the time when we were
- 4:20talking a lot about like Skippity toilet and these
- 4:23content series that are considered or supposed to be
- 4:27like, quote UN quote, brain rod. Although if you listened to our
- 4:29Skippity toilet deep dive, you will know that it has much more
- 4:33meaning than it appears to have. But still like these
- 4:35conversations, like I'm not surprised, I guess that brain
- 4:39Rod is the word of the year or that the use of it has boomed so
- 4:44much. And then this was a really
- 4:45interesting, interesting point they wrote.
- 4:47So this is from Oxford Dictionary.
- 4:49They said the first recorded use of brain rot was found in 1854
- 4:54in Henry David Thoreau's book Walden, which reports his
- 4:58experiences of living a simple lifestyle in the natural world.
- 5:02It is so crazy to think that brain rot, like the term dates
- 5:05back to the 1800s. And look, I mean, I say this all
- 5:09the time, but Oxford Dictionary saying that brain rot is or like
- 5:14naming brain rot as the word of the year.
- 5:16This is the perfect example of something that I always say on
- 5:19this podcast, on panels in any consulting that I do.
- 5:23Internet culture is simply just culture.
- 5:27Now the last story that I have for you guys.
- 5:30This actually feels like brain rot.
- 5:33But apparently Dove is collaborating with Crumble
- 5:36Cookies. I actually thought that this was
- 5:38a troll like an April Fool's Day vibe when I saw it on Trend
- 5:43Mood's page, but apparently it is true.
- 5:46So Dove and Crumble are collaborating on cookie themed
- 5:49limited edition body range. The range includes confetti
- 5:54cake, deodorant stick, body wash, and body scrub.
- 5:58OK, deodorant stick that smells like confetti cake.
- 6:05I don't think so. Strawberry crumb cake, which
- 6:07comes in a moisturizing liquid body wash and lemon glaze.
- 6:11Moisturizing liquid hand wash and deodorant stick.
- 6:14OK, it's the deodorant sticks the deodorant sticks are
- 6:17throwing me. That's so weird.
- 6:20I don't know. This actually a whole this whole
- 6:21range is so reminiscent of Jessica Simpson's like sweet and
- 6:26edible body care line. I don't know if you guys
- 6:28remember it from like the I guess mid 2000s.
- 6:31Fun fact about me, I have a bit of an anecdote about that line.
- 6:35So I was the biggest Jessica Simpson Stan when I was younger.
- 6:40I don't know if I've ever talked about this before, but like my
- 6:42bedroom was literally covered in posters of Jessica Simpson.
- 6:47I fucking loved Jessica Simpson. Like I had all of these
- 6:50calendars of her and I would just cut out the pages instead
- 6:53of using it as like a real calendar and just put the
- 6:55calendar photos like all over my walls.
- 6:57Like I was obsessed with her when her body range came out.
- 7:02I actually never tried it because I lived in Canada.
- 7:04Like I grew up in Canada, so I don't think I could get it
- 7:06there, but I was like obsessed with that concept.
- 7:09I loved the campaign imagery. I was like 11 by the way.
- 7:13Anyways, I was like obsessed with that vibe.
- 7:15I was obsessed with her. My first e-mail address ever
- 7:19when I was like, I don't know, like 9 or whatever, whenever you
- 7:23make your first, very first e-mail address was Swimming
- 7:26Queen 33. Because I was a competitive
- 7:29swimmer growing up. And then I decided it was time
- 7:31to graduate from Swimming Queen 33 to a more adults e-mail
- 7:36address. When I was like, maybe, OK,
- 7:38maybe I wasn't 11. Maybe I was like 13.
- 7:41I wanted to make mine dessert after the Jessica Simpson edible
- 7:46body care line. So I wanted to make it dessert
- 7:50and that I'd have like a number at the end, whatever number I
- 7:52could get. So 13 year old me goes on
- 7:54Hotmail, you know, clicks, add new account.
- 7:57I type in dessert and I start like trying different numbers.
- 8:03However, I spelled dessert without the second S.
- 8:08So it was desert. So I got the e-mail address.
- 8:11I thought it was dessert and then whatever number at
- 8:14theend@hotmail.com but it was desert.
- 8:17And then of course when you make an e-mail address like I was at
- 8:19the beginning of my teenage years and then when I got my
- 8:22first teenage job and stuff like they were using that e-mail.
- 8:25So you just like can't change your e-mail address for so long
- 8:27like you guys understand. So my e-mail address was
- 8:30literally desert@hotmail.com for like 15 years, I swear.
- 8:39And then when people would ask me like, why the hell is your
- 8:43e-mail address desert? I would have to explain the
- 8:47whole story, the entire lore, and basically just have to be
- 8:50like, I made a spelling mistake. Like I was trying to make it
- 8:53dessert after Jessica Simpson's body care line, Edible body care
- 8:59line. That's actually so cursed.
- 9:03So then finally I started using my university e-mail address,
- 9:07like when I got to university and then when I left university,
- 9:10I was like, OK, I cannot be desert@hotmail.com.
- 9:15Like I need to make an adult e-mail address.
- 9:17But I think she still lives on. I don't know if I would know the
- 9:20password, but I'm pretty sure I still have access to
- 9:25desert@hotmail.com. Anyways, that is what this
- 9:29entire range reminds me of. It just reminds me of like that
- 9:31specific story. But yeah, this is super
- 9:34interesting. It's a very interesting play
- 9:36between Crumble and Dove. I feel like it does show how
- 9:40relevant Crumble is and that they are trying to expand beyond
- 9:44just being known as like a cookie company, you know?
- 9:47And I think that kind of makes sense.
- 9:48They are a bit of like an empire at this point.
- 9:50And for dev, I think it's a cute limited edition range that might
- 9:54help them tap a bit of a younger demographic if that's what
- 9:57they're going for. But anyways, guys, that's it for
- 10:00many Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
