- 0:53Chris,
- 0:55then you know who our next guest is.
- 0:56Mr. Chris,
- 0:57and I am drawing a blank on your
- 0:59last name.
- 1:00It's okay.
- 1:02Golf Shop.
- 1:02Golf Shop.
- 1:03Chris Golf Shop.
- 1:04Chris Golf Shop.
- 1:05I've answered it far worse.
- 1:11so let's uh let's start for the the
- 1:25guests and viewers at home that don't know
- 1:27you um and give them a quick intro
- 1:30to who you are what you do and
- 1:32uh we'll dive
- 1:34No,
- 1:34so I'm the director of golf at Hermitage
- 1:36Golf Course in Old Hickory, Tennessee.
- 1:38And about three years ago,
- 1:40we started doing,
- 1:42I guess you'd call them spoof phone calls
- 1:44over all the real questions we had gotten
- 1:46from people who had walked in the door,
- 1:48which then had morphed to...
- 1:51Other golf professionals had called and
- 1:52said, hey,
- 1:52you're never going to believe what's been
- 1:54asked.
- 1:54Can you please put it in a video?
- 1:55Because I don't have a platform to say
- 1:57it, and somebody's got to say it.
- 1:59And so that's kind of part of my
- 2:01gig.
- 2:02My full-time gig is that I just mop
- 2:04the floors, I take the trash out,
- 2:05and I get yelled at when somebody gets
- 2:06really, really mad.
- 2:07And it works out well for everybody at
- 2:08Hermitage because I tell everybody I let
- 2:10the adults in the room make all the
- 2:11decisions.
- 2:13i walk around like i'm busy and then
- 2:14they're like hey chris this guy's really
- 2:16really mad like you need to go talk
- 2:17to him and that's that's about ninety
- 2:19percent of my day but she works out
- 2:21well for everybody i never understood and
- 2:24i've played golf my entire life uh my
- 2:27dad played professionally i tried to play
- 2:29professionally um but i was too short and
- 2:32fat to to play professionally that's what
- 2:36the coach told me i don't know that's
- 2:37what the
- 2:40Oh, thank you.
- 2:40That's twice today.
- 2:41I'm the best assistant timekeeper there
- 2:44is.
- 2:44But I've never understood.
- 2:46And maybe it's because I just love the
- 2:50game so much.
- 2:51But I've never understood how people can
- 2:53get so upset on a golf course.
- 2:55Oh, whatever.
- 2:56I don't even play golf.
- 2:57And I know why y'all can get upset.
- 2:59There is a goal.
- 3:00And if you were this much competitive and
- 3:02you think you did it right.
- 3:04And you, the wind,
- 3:06the bird came by and crapped on your
- 3:08ball.
- 3:08I don't care what happened.
- 3:09You will find a way to become a
- 3:11fear.
- 3:11I could get infuriated for you.
- 3:13I could walk around and just be pissed.
- 3:15Give me a five dollar set of clubs.
- 3:16I can be pissed for you.
- 3:17Cause it's so that's part of what the
- 3:19public loves watching the meltdown.
- 3:20But a bad day on the golf course
- 3:23is a great day to anything else.
- 3:27I could see both sides.
- 3:27The thing that baffles me being on this
- 3:30side of the counter and managing golf
- 3:32courses is the amount of people who will
- 3:35come in and get mad because I played
- 3:37in four hours and forty five minutes
- 3:39instead of four and a half hours.
- 3:40And it's like we're talking about fifteen
- 3:42minutes, Mr. President.
- 3:44I don't know what you're doing.
- 3:45We're talking about fifteen minutes.
- 3:47You know what I mean?
- 3:48And I don't mean that.
- 3:49I say that like,
- 3:51what are you doing where that fifteen
- 3:52minutes is a big deal?
- 3:53Right.
- 3:53You know, hey, listen, don't get me wrong.
- 3:55If your schedule's that tight,
- 3:55golf wasn't your thing today.
- 3:56We probably weren't what you need to be
- 3:57doing.
- 3:58You know,
- 3:59and so sometimes that's the stuff I think
- 4:02for all golf professionals that baffles
- 4:04us.
- 4:05I totally understand if somebody says
- 4:06something to you or whatever the case may
- 4:08be.
- 4:08I get that.
- 4:09I get that.
- 4:10I totally get that.
- 4:10You've paid good money and you want to
- 4:13be treated a certain way.
- 4:13I totally understand that.
- 4:15I do.
- 4:16But to say, well,
- 4:17I thought I was going to play in
- 4:18four and a half hours and we played
- 4:19in four hours and forty five minutes and
- 4:20it ruined my experience.
- 4:22It's like, really?
- 4:23You know,
- 4:24and then you take the aspect of.
- 4:27I'm, I'm this way, right?
- 4:28I mean, I brought the cripple.
- 4:29Who's going to slow your walk down then?
- 4:31That's what you shouldn't have done.
- 4:34Wow.
- 4:35Wow.
- 4:36Tell me if I played with you last
- 4:38week,
- 4:38I wouldn't have slowed your game down.
- 4:41You're not crippled.
- 4:43That ankle was pretty sore last week.
- 4:45Well,
- 4:45I've seen people who were bad golfers play
- 4:47really fast.
- 4:48And I've seen people, Oh,
- 4:49Speaking of professionally, right?
- 4:50I mean,
- 4:50I tell people all the time I tried
- 4:52to play mini tours for two years and
- 4:55I love to eat and I wasn't a
- 4:56good enough player to eat while I was
- 4:58out there on tour.
- 4:59And I was like,
- 4:59I got to get real.
- 5:01And I was bad, but I played fast.
- 5:03You know, I mean,
- 5:04I was I remember going to my first
- 5:06professional event and I shot ninety two.
- 5:10and uh but i did it really really
- 5:12fast because i didn't want to slow the
- 5:14guys around me who were shooting and and
- 5:17the best part about or the worst part
- 5:18about it was you have to show back
- 5:19up for the second round and they're just
- 5:21like god this guy came back oh no
- 5:26one guy one time was like hey man
- 5:27i'll just pay you the entry fee if
- 5:29you're afraid of losing the money and i
- 5:30said dude if you just pay a quarter
- 5:32of my entry fee i'll go home
- 5:35You know, I don't want to be here.
- 5:36You can clearly tell.
- 5:37I don't need to be here.
- 5:39You know, it wasn't like I got shot.
- 5:42Your first professional tournament you
- 5:43shot ninety-two.
- 5:43I shot ninety-two.
- 5:45Posted it.
- 5:45But then you could go home and be
- 5:47like, hey honey, I didn't make money,
- 5:49but I didn't lose money.
- 5:51No,
- 5:51the problem is you did lose money because
- 5:52I had to buy gas and I think
- 5:53I lost like golf balls and I had
- 5:55to buy balls.
- 5:56Chris,
- 5:56what you don't understand is how good you
- 5:58just made me feel.
- 5:59you know because my first my first
- 6:01professional tournament i shot and i
- 6:03thought i was the worst golfer in america
- 6:05no no no no i um it got
- 6:07a little bit better where did you play
- 6:09so i did your very your first tournament
- 6:12uh my first tournament was the state open
- 6:14qualifier for the tga okay uh i shot
- 6:19I played at Greystone,
- 6:21which I absolutely love that golf course.
- 6:22I think it's always in great shape.
- 6:24They always do a really,
- 6:25really good job down there of running the
- 6:26facility.
- 6:27The TGA does a great job of running
- 6:29events.
- 6:33I wish I had a better story to
- 6:34say, hey, after that,
- 6:35I went on and I played thirteen years
- 6:37on tour and the case of the matter
- 6:39is I went on and I missed a
- 6:40lot of cuts.
- 6:41And so I don't have that,
- 6:43I don't have that story,
- 6:44which it worked out great.
- 6:46It sure did.
- 6:46You know, and I love that I'm there.
- 6:48I met my wife there.
- 6:49I've met some of my best friends there.
- 6:50That's awesome.
- 6:51Um,
- 6:52but I don't have this story of like,
- 6:53well, I shot in the state open qualifier.
- 6:55And then after that, I figured it out.
- 6:57I figured out I didn't need to be
- 6:58doing this, but I had a great time.
- 7:02And then I went and did some, um,
- 7:06Carolina's pro tour in North Carolina.
- 7:09I did some winter series stuff in Florida.
- 7:14And then I was a caddie for a
- 7:15little bit for a good buddy of mine,
- 7:18Zach Radford,
- 7:18who hits all these trick shots on
- 7:20Instagram, TikTok, YouTube.
- 7:22Super good guy, really,
- 7:23really good player.
- 7:26So I got that aspect of it,
- 7:28but then I found out I'm not.
- 7:30I tell this story all the time.
- 7:32Best round I ever shot in competition was
- 7:33.
- 7:33I went out,
- 7:35I played about as well as I could
- 7:36play.
- 7:37This dude shows up on the number one
- 7:38tee.
- 7:39I think he's still drunk.
- 7:40He throws up before he tees off.
- 7:42He probably throws up two or three more
- 7:44times.
- 7:45Probably ends up being hung over by like
- 7:47hole seven or eight.
- 7:49He slaps it around the yard for four
- 7:51hours, shoots sixty-seven.
- 7:53And he played so bad.
- 7:55And I thought,
- 7:56I'm in the wrong side of the business.
- 7:58I'm not beating that guy on his best
- 7:59day.
- 8:00I played as well as I could play
- 8:02and shot .
- 8:03And after that,
- 8:04that was the last tournament I played in.
- 8:06And I was like,
- 8:06I need a real job.
- 8:08But you knew your limit, though.
- 8:09I did.
- 8:09I had a great time.
- 8:11Met some really cool people.
- 8:13Some guys who were still playing out
- 8:14there.
- 8:16For us non-golf types,
- 8:20you have people who love the game.
- 8:23have tried your hand at the pro side
- 8:24and whatever else there is a skill there
- 8:28is an ability how much of it comes
- 8:31down to though just the ability to hit
- 8:34a hundred balls instead of ten the
- 8:36consistency or is just some of people are
- 8:39just not going to be that good and
- 8:42that's just where it's at
- 8:43I think at the competitive level,
- 8:47at that level,
- 8:48you're talking about two or three shots.
- 8:50And it usually comes down to,
- 8:52there's a lot of guys who play at
- 8:53Hermitage that if you put them on the
- 8:55range and you watched them hit range
- 8:57balls, you're like,
- 8:57I bet that guy plays on tour.
- 8:58Like, I bet he does something on tour.
- 9:01The difference with the guys on the mini
- 9:04tours,
- 9:05on like the Corn Ferry and the PGA
- 9:06Tour,
- 9:07you're talking about two shots a weekend.
- 9:11when you think about it.
- 9:12And it usually comes down to,
- 9:14and I used to know this stat,
- 9:17the average,
- 9:17the worst putter on the PGA Tour,
- 9:19I think averages like,
- 9:20thirty putts a round.
- 9:23The worst putter on probably some of these
- 9:24mini tours or the best putter on some
- 9:26of these mini tours probably average like
- 9:27thirty two putts around.
- 9:28OK.
- 9:29Well, when you take that over four rounds,
- 9:30that's eight shots.
- 9:31Right.
- 9:31Right.
- 9:31OK.
- 9:32And it's not anything that you can see.
- 9:35Right.
- 9:35By watching him swing or him swing or
- 9:37you swing or me swing.
- 9:38It just comes down to he's making ten
- 9:41footer after ten footer after ten footer.
- 9:43And you're only making three ten footers.
- 9:45OK.
- 9:46And that's the difference at the top.
- 9:49I played with some guys when they hit
- 9:50it.
- 9:50I was like, I don't know.
- 9:51about that.
- 9:52It didn't sound the same,
- 9:53it didn't look the same,
- 9:55but you put them within a hundred and
- 9:56twenty, a hundred yards.
- 9:59Unbelievable.
- 10:00I mean, they were, they were hitting it,
- 10:01they were hitting it inside this table.
- 10:03Right.
- 10:03Consistently.
- 10:04Right.
- 10:04Then you get them on the green or
- 10:05you get them around the green and they've
- 10:06got to get it up and down and
- 10:08they're going to make par a heck of
- 10:10a lot more than what they're going to
- 10:11make bogey.
- 10:12That's the difference.
- 10:13That's the difference.
- 10:14I've never heard it put quite that way.
- 10:16And like when it's just two or three
- 10:18shots per round or weekend, like that's,
- 10:19that's awesome.
- 10:20How much of that is the mental head
- 10:23space?
- 10:23A lot.
- 10:24Okay.
- 10:25And I think that's any sport, right?
- 10:28Kind of on my own page,
- 10:29and it's funny that you teach at Oakland.
- 10:32My brother was a head football coach at
- 10:34Blackman Middle for a long time.
- 10:35Now he's the head high school football
- 10:37coach at DCA.
- 10:39And I coached for a long time,
- 10:41and I coached with him.
- 10:43And I think that's every sport,
- 10:45that some people just have the ability to
- 10:48give me the ball and get out of
- 10:49the way.
- 10:49And I don't care if it's football,
- 10:51baseball, basketball, golf, tennis,
- 10:53you name it.
- 10:54And I do think there are some people
- 10:56who,
- 10:56when they step on their field of
- 10:58competition,
- 10:59they're able to go to a completely
- 11:00different universe.
- 11:01And you're just like, okay,
- 11:03that person's got something.
- 11:04Tim Grover's book about –
- 11:07relentless.
- 11:08He talks about Michael Jordan did that.
- 11:10Like when he was on the court,
- 11:13he was at this next level that nobody
- 11:15could attain to.
- 11:16And so I wonder that.
- 11:17And a lot of athletes just have the
- 11:19ability to be an athlete.
- 11:21Like they just let the natural take over.
- 11:24And, uh, I'm always curious about golf.
- 11:26I respect the heck out of it.
- 11:27I would never legitimately step out there
- 11:29and play it.
- 11:30But when I
- 11:30three people who play fairly regularly i
- 11:33get intrigued by it just enough i think
- 11:35i could buy clubs but then i'm smart
- 11:37i'm like no wait a minute but see
- 11:38here's the thing it's a it's a fantastic
- 11:40game for everybody right right and the
- 11:43great thing about golf is the clock runs
- 11:45out on any other sports you play right
- 11:47i mean you're going to have i mean
- 11:49just take we're in the season of football
- 11:51right now think about how many seniors
- 11:52just in rutherford county right now in
- 11:55what eight weeks right that clock's going
- 11:56around they're never going to play another
- 11:58snap of football
- 11:59Golf,
- 11:59you can play competitive golf your whole
- 12:01life.
- 12:01They have amateur tours.
- 12:02They have the TGA.
- 12:05And then if you don't really care for
- 12:06that aspect,
- 12:07you can play golf your entire life.
- 12:08The amount of people who came out during
- 12:10COVID when golf was one of the outside
- 12:14activities that you could do,
- 12:16and they just do it recreationally.
- 12:17They don't care what they shoot.
- 12:18Heck, some don't even keep score.
- 12:20They buy a six-pack of beer.
- 12:21They're with their three other buddies.
- 12:23They ride around, and for four,
- 12:25four and a half,
- 12:26they go have a great time.
- 12:27I'll be the golf cart driver.
- 12:29We see that too.
- 12:33We have a nonprofit that I'm on the
- 12:36board of called Minutes Wisely.
- 12:39we give back to veterans first responders
- 12:41and gold star families um we just had
- 12:44a big barbecue event the other day at
- 12:46the restaurant and we're doing a
- 12:47tournament tomorrow um here in town um and
- 12:53the amazing thing about golf for me is
- 12:58just being on the course i'm not playing
- 12:59tomorrow i'm i'm i'm driving around the
- 13:02photographer and i'm stoked
- 13:07Like the weather's supposed to be nice.
- 13:10I'm going to be on a golf course
- 13:11all day.
- 13:13Like it's going to be great.
- 13:15Like there's, it's, it doesn't matter.
- 13:16And it doesn't to me,
- 13:17like I growing up,
- 13:20on a golf course in my life has
- 13:23always been,
- 13:23I've been to so many different kinds of
- 13:25golf courses because after my dad's
- 13:28professional career,
- 13:29he went into being a pro,
- 13:30he was a greenskeeper, superintendent,
- 13:32and then became a sales rep for Tommy
- 13:34Armour Golf.
- 13:35And so I grew up in the game.
- 13:39And just being on a golf course is
- 13:40almost like being home, right?
- 13:42There's nostalgia there for you.
- 13:44Very much so, right?
- 13:45So if I wasn't on a golf course,
- 13:46I was cooking and barbecuing.
- 13:48That's just what we did, right?
- 13:49I was on a farm with a fire
- 13:51or I was on a golf course having
- 13:53a good time.
- 13:54And it's just it's a wonderful sport that
- 14:01hit the nail on the head.
- 14:03You can be sixty five,
- 14:04seventy years old and go out and enjoy
- 14:07the day and have a great time and
- 14:10and play the game.
- 14:12But you're not going to do that in
- 14:14baseball.
- 14:17And the great thing about golf is a
- 14:19lot of the golf courses that you see
- 14:20the tour professionals play,
- 14:22you can go play.
- 14:23There's some private courses that you
- 14:24can't get on,
- 14:25but you can go play Pebble.
- 14:26And the Ryder Cup's here in a few
- 14:28weeks.
- 14:28I think it's at Bethpage,
- 14:30which I should probably know that as a
- 14:31PGA golf professional, but I don't.
- 14:33With actual dates?
- 14:34That and the golf course.
- 14:36That's kind of the big deal.
- 14:38But you can go play those.
- 14:39You're never going to stand in Yankee
- 14:40Stadium and get a fastball.
- 14:41You're never going to do that.
- 14:42What's the one in Scotland?
- 14:45st andrews st andrews if i there's a
- 14:47few but saying there's what we're talking
- 14:50about okay if i had that's the ones
- 14:51on the sea right most of them most
- 14:53of yeah yeah if i had a dream
- 14:56golf course it's st andrews and that comes
- 14:59from tiger woods pga game on whatever my
- 15:03brother played back in the day
- 15:06because every time we went to that and
- 15:07then you start and get older and you
- 15:09realize how beautiful that is and like it
- 15:11is just awesome if i had a a
- 15:14bucket list of of places that'd be mine
- 15:17so now that i've said that do you
- 15:19have one that you've never played that you
- 15:20like if i ever got the opportunity to
- 15:21go there
- 15:22I think I went there and I watched
- 15:24it with the Masters at Augusta.
- 15:27I think that's my bucket list.
- 15:29That or Pebble to go play those two.
- 15:32And to talk about golf courses, I mean,
- 15:34there's not really many better places you
- 15:36can spend four, four and a half,
- 15:37five hours outside.
- 15:39They're always well kept.
- 15:40The weather's usually perfect when you're
- 15:42out there.
- 15:42don't have a lot of riff raff around
- 15:44it's just quiet i mean you can kind
- 15:45of be with yourself you're with your
- 15:47buddies or whatever the case may be so
- 15:49there is an unbelievable amount of upside
- 15:51um to being on a golf course and
- 15:53even if you're not a golfer and this
- 15:55is why i say augusta even if you're
- 15:56not a golfer you have to go see
- 15:58the piece of property right i mean
- 15:59nothing's out of place it's kept i mean
- 16:02it's it was the brush the grass oh
- 16:04i know i used to teach with a
- 16:06guy that had somehow had the family
- 16:09connection he'd been going since he was
- 16:10like
- 16:12years old, went every year, always on,
- 16:14I think between and somewhere in there,
- 16:17same spot, same thing every year.
- 16:20And that was what he talked about was
- 16:21just, it's one thing,
- 16:23like even non golfers know Augusta, right?
- 16:25I mean that like that's,
- 16:27but once he said,
- 16:28once you're on that property,
- 16:30and you see just the entirety of the
- 16:32landscape he said we make jokes about the
- 16:35two dollar per minute she sandwich or
- 16:36whatever but like then you're there yep
- 16:38and you see the clubhouse and you see
- 16:41the the blade of grass that was laid
- 16:44to the right not the left you know
- 16:45what and he just said it's it's wild
- 16:47so it's wild
- 16:48um i think that'd be cool to visit
- 16:50i would i wouldn't have any business even
- 16:52putting a club on the grass there but
- 16:55it'd be cool so they wouldn't allow you
- 16:56no they wouldn't no they wouldn't they'd
- 16:58see me coming a mile late no sir
- 17:01no you stay away the pimento cheese is
- 17:04over there your content how much of that
- 17:09is rooted in the the the stuff that
- 17:12you have heard on a day-to-day basis
- 17:16Uh,
- 17:16just about a hundred percent of the
- 17:17questions.
- 17:20I think we did a video on like
- 17:21cicadas.
- 17:21Right.
- 17:21That's the only one that wasn't real.
- 17:24Right.
- 17:24Um, the majority of those,
- 17:26those questions were asked in that pro
- 17:28shop.
- 17:30I can't imagine.
- 17:31I wouldn't be able to keep a straight
- 17:32face.
- 17:32I would just feel like,
- 17:33did you really just ask me that?
- 17:34The best part about it was when we
- 17:36first started, like, it wasn't my idea.
- 17:38So Hermitage Golf Course is family owned.
- 17:41And so the daughter is the president.
- 17:43And what she's done with the place is
- 17:44incredible.
- 17:47The daughter-in-law is director of
- 17:48marketing and the son-in-law is the GM.
- 17:50And like I said,
- 17:51I let all the adults in the room
- 17:52make the decision.
- 17:52So anyways,
- 17:53it was pouring down rain one day and
- 17:54we're telling a bunch of stories.
- 17:56And they said, well,
- 17:57let's just act like you're answering the
- 17:58phone.
- 17:59And I said,
- 18:00I don't know about this guy.
- 18:01I was like,
- 18:02we're hardcore making fun of people.
- 18:04Yeah, it's wonderful.
- 18:07I mean, right.
- 18:09And so the director of marketing was at
- 18:10a huge ad agency before she was in
- 18:12Hermitage.
- 18:13And she said, listen, let's just do one.
- 18:15If it falls flat, no harm, no foul.
- 18:17You know, we'll just, hey,
- 18:18we tried something.
- 18:18It didn't work out.
- 18:19And there's a guy who's been managing the
- 18:21social source for a long time.
- 18:22And he said, I'll film it.
- 18:23And he does such a good job of
- 18:25filming and answering the questions and
- 18:26all of that.
- 18:27And we did one and it took off.
- 18:29And they were like,
- 18:30do you want to keep going?
- 18:31And I was like, well, yeah,
- 18:32if y'all want to keep going,
- 18:32we'll keep doing this.
- 18:33And so it was awesome.
- 18:35He goes, hey,
- 18:35let's just kind of start writing some
- 18:37ideas down,
- 18:37and I can make a script for you,
- 18:39and you can read it.
- 18:39And I said, oh.
- 18:41I said, hey, let me tell you something.
- 18:43I said,
- 18:44the last book I read was The Berenstain
- 18:46Bears Try for the Team.
- 18:47And I don't know if they made the
- 18:49team because I didn't finish the book.
- 18:51I said,
- 18:51so I'm not sure I'm going to be
- 18:52able to read that script.
- 18:55And he didn't believe me.
- 18:56And since then, he's been like,
- 18:57you know what?
- 18:57You're right.
- 18:57You're never going to be able to read
- 18:58that script.
- 18:59And we just kind of riff.
- 19:01Like, we just kind of would be like,
- 19:02well, what do you want to do here?
- 19:03And I was like, well, you know,
- 19:04I heard this question the other day.
- 19:05And so we would kind of take it
- 19:07that way.
- 19:07And then we thought, okay,
- 19:09we could do something on like
- 19:10announcements for scrambles because
- 19:12nobody's listening.
- 19:13You know,
- 19:13you got this rule sheet and par's your
- 19:15partner and you can't shoot any worse than
- 19:17.
- 19:17And somebody turns in .
- 19:23And they're like,
- 19:23you made that announcement?
- 19:24I said, we did.
- 19:25And we put it in print.
- 19:27You signed the waiver.
- 19:30Like you asked what tees you were playing
- 19:31from and right underneath that you said
- 19:32you can't shoot anywhere.
- 19:35And so we just did all of that.
- 19:37Like we just did what we thought would
- 19:38be funny.
- 19:39And we were just trying to entertain.
- 19:42And the amount of people that I've had
- 19:44call since.
- 19:46and been like,
- 19:47you shouldn't talk to your customers like
- 19:48this.
- 19:49This is not how golf is.
- 19:51This is not customer service.
- 19:52If you worked at my place,
- 19:53I'd get you fired.
- 19:54And eventually I was like, hey, listen,
- 19:55mom,
- 19:55I know you're not a huge fan of
- 19:56my material,
- 19:57but just don't call every time I release
- 19:58a video.
- 19:58And so, no, I mean,
- 20:00I had a guy stop me in the
- 20:02bar and he was like, hey man,
- 20:04I watch your...
- 20:06I watch your videos.
- 20:08And I said, okay.
- 20:09And he said, you're talking about me.
- 20:12And I thought,
- 20:13this guy's about to hit me.
- 20:15How's this going to go?
- 20:16And he goes, sir,
- 20:18I've asked all those questions.
- 20:21And I said, really?
- 20:22And he goes, the weather?
- 20:25Asked it.
- 20:25What's the radar?
- 20:26Asked it.
- 20:27Speed of the greens?
- 20:28I don't need to be doing that.
- 20:29Yardage book?
- 20:30He said, sir,
- 20:30I've asked all those questions.
- 20:31And I thought, where's he going with this?
- 20:33And he said, let me tell you something.
- 20:34Because of you.
- 20:36I've stopped them all.
- 20:38And I said,
- 20:38somebody loves you more than you know,
- 20:39sir.
- 20:39He goes, I don't know about that,
- 20:40but I'm not doing that anymore.
- 20:43And, uh,
- 20:46I was going to ask if you've had
- 20:48anybody come up and be like,
- 20:49was that one about me?
- 20:51I do.
- 20:52I do.
- 20:52I do.
- 20:53Let's take a quick break and we're going
- 20:54to come back and dive into that.
- 20:56Killing the vibe.
- 20:58Sorry.
- 21:01I did that.
- 21:01Uh,
- 21:04welcome back to single tree nation guys
- 21:07we're diving right back into questions
- 21:10with uh chris here questions from the
- 21:12guilty that's what it is there's a podcast
- 21:17questions from the guilty i don't even
- 21:22know but his name's kyle like i don't
- 21:24like that and i'm not wrong kyle and
- 21:28chad both
- 21:30cornered Chris.
- 21:31That was me, wasn't it?
- 21:35He didn't say no, by the way.
- 21:36I mean,
- 21:37there's been a lot of people over the
- 21:39last two and a half years who have
- 21:40come up and been like,
- 21:42is that about me?
- 21:43So y'all started doing that two and a
- 21:45half years ago.
- 21:47Sure.
- 21:49Somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 21:51It's kind of all ran together.
- 21:53Because I didn't think...
- 21:55I thought what we were talking about was
- 21:57funny, right?
- 21:58But I thought what we were talking about
- 21:59was funny to a really, really,
- 22:01really small group of people.
- 22:03And who I thought would get it would
- 22:04be like golf professionals and people in
- 22:05the industry.
- 22:08But the amount of people who have come
- 22:09into Hermitage Golf Course and said,
- 22:10I've never played golf,
- 22:11I'll never play golf,
- 22:12I've never held a golf club,
- 22:14but I had to come see the place
- 22:15because of what you're doing online.
- 22:16And I think it's hilarious.
- 22:18And I wasn't being disingenuous because
- 22:19that's not lost on me that people are
- 22:21coming to Hermitage Golf Course,
- 22:22but I was like,
- 22:23how did you get the joke?
- 22:24Right.
- 22:25Like,
- 22:25you don't know what we were talking about.
- 22:27And they're like,
- 22:28we just thought it was great.
- 22:29And they buy a shirt and they buy
- 22:30lunch.
- 22:30And so it's been really cool.
- 22:32It's been a different way for us to
- 22:34be able to tell our story,
- 22:36to get people on property.
- 22:36And to reach the non-golfer.
- 22:38That's right.
- 22:38I mean,
- 22:38because if you get somebody to come in
- 22:39and drop fifty bucks,
- 22:41that's the only time everyone will spend
- 22:42that fifty bucks with you.
- 22:43I mean,
- 22:43that's fifty more than you would have had
- 22:45any other time.
- 22:45You haven't bought a golf shirt in a
- 22:46while, huh?
- 22:49I was talking about lunch.
- 22:58I'm amazed at what golf certs cost.
- 23:00Cause I was, after you said, I was,
- 23:02oh, that's right.
- 23:02They're like seven or eight bucks.
- 23:04And he's like, no,
- 23:05I'm not even coming in here in that
- 23:09basement.
- 23:14and they drop fifty dollars they get who
- 23:15wears heather gray to the golf course
- 23:17that's what i want to know he giggled
- 23:22that'd be a big problem what do they
- 23:25identify as i don't know i don't know
- 23:27i'm gonna leave that spring leave me alone
- 23:28i made one joke one time that i'm
- 23:34i'm big fall guys autumn weather i mean
- 23:36like big boy weather's here right i made
- 23:39one joke like a year and a half
- 23:41ago and i cannot get away from it
- 23:44So I did the best thing.
- 23:45I embraced it,
- 23:46and now I'm making fun of myself with
- 23:47it.
- 23:47That's the best way to do it.
- 23:48Look,
- 23:49we hadn't brought up MapQuest in a long
- 23:50time.
- 23:50Shut up!
- 23:51Like, whatever!
- 23:53You still use MapQuest?
- 23:58I had it sitting in the seat.
- 23:59Chris, I keep a printout.
- 24:01I did.
- 24:02I printed the directions and I had it
- 24:05in the passenger seat.
- 24:06My wife was like, you could use ways.
- 24:08And I was like, why?
- 24:08It's a fad.
- 24:12I saw a thing the other day said
- 24:13that people are talking about putting
- 24:15accidents away so nobody will go that way.
- 24:17So how do you make it better?
- 24:19You're still using like the Tom Tom,
- 24:21you know?
- 24:24Oh wow.
- 24:25All right.
- 24:25Yeah.
- 24:26Anyhow.
- 24:26All right.
- 24:27All right.
- 24:28Expensive golf starts a heck of a segue.
- 24:30We did there.
- 24:31Oh man.
- 24:34So did you ever,
- 24:37did you ever think that it was going
- 24:39to continue into what it has today?
- 24:41No, you didn't really, I mean,
- 24:44based off of what it looked like to
- 24:46me when I was going through your socials
- 24:48is it really didn't look like you were
- 24:49doing much social prior to the
- 24:53i did none on my own page and
- 24:56and we were we hired sam is the
- 24:58gentleman who manages all that for us and
- 25:01uh and we were just showing off the
- 25:02golf course and and here's hermitage and
- 25:04this is what we're doing and we had
- 25:05this idea and at first we did it
- 25:07on tick tock and then we started to
- 25:08kind of branch it into instagram and and
- 25:11i don't think any of us thought
- 25:14it would be where it is, right?
- 25:17And the amount of people who would want
- 25:19to come in and the amount of people
- 25:20that it would bring to Hermitage.
- 25:21I certainly didn't.
- 25:23Again,
- 25:24I thought we're making fun of people.
- 25:27How's this going to be received?
- 25:28And I don't care.
- 25:29I love to tell jokes.
- 25:30I love to write.
- 25:31I do stuff on my own page about
- 25:32coaching and being married and having
- 25:34kids.
- 25:35But I didn't want to make it harder
- 25:36on anybody else.
- 25:37For me, the best part,
- 25:38like your dual purpose.
- 25:41It's not just the golf part that you
- 25:43come in,
- 25:43the high school coach day one or whatever.
- 25:45And I'm like, this is grossly accurate.
- 25:47Now I know.
- 25:50But the holy cow, I'm like,
- 25:52you're disgusting because I can have this
- 25:54conversation.
- 25:54But the best part about that is,
- 25:56and somebody asked me, they're like,
- 25:57we're like,
- 25:57how do you find time to film?
- 25:59And I said,
- 26:00when my wife asked me to do something
- 26:01around the house.
- 26:04I'm like, I'm not doing that.
- 26:07And she'll come back and she's like,
- 26:07Chris, the house is still a wreck.
- 26:09And I'm like, yeah, but check this video.
- 26:12She's like, what is that?
- 26:17I asked you to lay out ground beef.
- 26:18She said, I asked if you could vacuum.
- 26:19And I was like, yeah,
- 26:19but it's spring ball day one.
- 26:21We got content to film.
- 26:25What are we doing?
- 26:28like it's homecoming yes look i haven't
- 26:32gotten past the football videos okay
- 26:34because i've been going through your
- 26:36personal stuff to listen to those because
- 26:39the hermitage ones get me every time so
- 26:41i have to i have to space my
- 26:43time out but the uh
- 26:47are you are you strictly football or do
- 26:50you go into basketball hockey yeah
- 26:54baseball i'll do baseball basketball like
- 26:56i started doing like some eight u um
- 26:58travel ball stuff oh buddy and one of
- 27:01the one of the biggest videos i ever
- 27:02did on my own page was there's three
- 27:04reasons that you make a travel ball team
- 27:07and uh i said one you uh you
- 27:11either know the coaching and the coaching
- 27:12staff
- 27:13Two,
- 27:14your dad's got a lot of money and
- 27:15he pays for it.
- 27:16Or three, you got a hot mom.
- 27:17Right?
- 27:18It's the only three reasons you make a
- 27:19travel ball team.
- 27:20Hang on.
- 27:22I have been in the stands in a
- 27:24high school basketball game.
- 27:25I got all three of those.
- 27:26And have heard all this from high school
- 27:29coaches.
- 27:29Like, whatever.
- 27:31Look at her.
- 27:31That's the only reason he made that team.
- 27:33I'm like, no, stop.
- 27:34But it fast forward.
- 27:36I,
- 27:37when I first started teaching kids would
- 27:39come all the time.
- 27:39No, I'm on the AAU team.
- 27:41I said, good.
- 27:42You wrote a check.
- 27:43No.
- 27:43Oh, we had tryouts.
- 27:44Right.
- 27:45And then you wrote a two hundred and
- 27:46fifty dollars check like that for the
- 27:49first week.
- 27:51for just the shoes.
- 27:52But they would get so upset that I
- 27:54would reduce it down to,
- 27:55you wrote a check.
- 27:56I'm sorry.
- 27:58It's grossly accurate.
- 27:59It's so accurate.
- 28:00I started doing it.
- 28:01And look,
- 28:02I think there's a place for trouble ball.
- 28:04A hundred percent, there is.
- 28:04And I think there's a thing like- There's
- 28:06a place to make fun of those pants
- 28:07too.
- 28:07And I'm making fun of myself.
- 28:09Right.
- 28:09I mean,
- 28:10like one of the videos we did on
- 28:11hermitage, one of the first ones we did,
- 28:13I made fun of myself because when we
- 28:16started it, they said,
- 28:16do you want to hear the bad comments
- 28:17or the good comments?
- 28:18And I said,
- 28:18I want to hear the bad comments because
- 28:20we can make that funny.
- 28:21Right.
- 28:22That's where the gold's at.
- 28:22That's where the gold's at.
- 28:23And this one guy was like, you know,
- 28:25he looks like a middle-aged PE teacher
- 28:27with a bad haircut.
- 28:28And I was like, I'm not middle-aged,
- 28:30you know,
- 28:32I thought I kept better care of my
- 28:34skin.
- 28:34So I was like, you failed that test,
- 28:36bud.
- 28:37But I just thought, okay, that'll be cool.
- 28:39And I thought, okay, listen,
- 28:40if you're going to make fun of people
- 28:41online,
- 28:42you have to expect them to make fun
- 28:43back online.
- 28:44And that's part of the fun.
- 28:46And my thought process is if we can
- 28:48laugh at ourselves and one another and
- 28:50non-serious issues,
- 28:51the world would be a better place.
- 28:52And we're just having fun.
- 28:54We just want to entertain.
- 28:55And I tell people all the time,
- 28:56because I really did have a guy call
- 28:57me and he said,
- 29:00I just don't think you should talk to
- 29:01your customer like this.
- 29:02And I said, well, hold on.
- 29:03You think it's a real phone call?
- 29:05And I said,
- 29:05what do you think the odds are we
- 29:06set a camera up in the shop for
- 29:07eight hours?
- 29:08I worked my entire shift.
- 29:09I got the same question three times and
- 29:10we took out the other material we didn't
- 29:12want.
- 29:12And he goes, you know,
- 29:14when you say it like that,
- 29:15it makes a lot more sense.
- 29:18But still, if you worked at my club,
- 29:19I'd get you fired.
- 29:20And I should have let it go.
- 29:21I should have just said, you know what,
- 29:22maybe this is not for you.
- 29:23And I said, well,
- 29:24so that's what I'm trying to do here.
- 29:25I just don't know what to say.
- 29:26Click.
- 29:31we're the right opposite at hermitage and
- 29:32that's what i i also want to convey
- 29:35when i do podcasts or we do videos
- 29:36is that if you showed up to hermitage
- 29:38and you had a bad experience we're going
- 29:40to bend over backwards to make sure we
- 29:41take care of it oh hands down this
- 29:42is just a way that we entertain and
- 29:45we get it out and and look at
- 29:46somebody that has played there recently i
- 29:48your your course is amazing thank you the
- 29:50people are amazing everybody in there
- 29:51treated us with the utmost hospitality we
- 29:54had we had an absolute blast i was
- 29:57setting up the lunch tent on
- 30:00whatever hole i was on i don't even
- 30:02remember now but and i had four or
- 30:05five people go by me how you doing
- 30:07today sir everything good what can i do
- 30:08for you like i mean it's y'all were
- 30:10phenomenal okay phenomenal yeah there's a
- 30:12bunch of really good people that that care
- 30:14about the place right and and it's not
- 30:17and i think it's from the top down
- 30:18i think it's from ownership down that
- 30:20there's such good people to work for that
- 30:22you want to see the place succeed
- 30:23How much of that is rooted in because
- 30:25it is held by the family versus an
- 30:28exclusive private club?
- 30:29I think it's one hundred percent.
- 30:30You know what I'm saying?
- 30:31I think it's one hundred percent right.
- 30:33I tell people this all the time.
- 30:34Mr. Eller,
- 30:35who I think the absolute world of,
- 30:37he's seventy five, seventy five, seventy.
- 30:41Yeah, I think he just turned seventy five.
- 30:42And a couple of years ago,
- 30:43he wanted to start all over on the
- 30:44general's retreat because he still has a
- 30:45vision of we can be better and we
- 30:48can strive to be better.
- 30:49And when the gentleman who's had an
- 30:50unbelievable career says,
- 30:52says hey we can be better that trickles
- 30:54all the way down right and and to
- 30:56somebody who has put money so much money
- 30:59back in the place for bunkers and greens
- 31:01a new bar and grill we just opened
- 31:03two new lodges you you want to work
- 31:06for people like that and you want to
- 31:08go the extra mile for people like that
- 31:10and the best part about the videos
- 31:12is ashley who's his daughter the president
- 31:14i said hey this was like video five
- 31:17or six in and i said hey has
- 31:19your dad seen any of these videos and
- 31:21she was like i don't think so and
- 31:22i said wrong um because when i post
- 31:25them on my page it shows up and
- 31:27she's like well he doesn't say anything to
- 31:28me and so until he does we're just
- 31:29going to keep going and blah blah whatever
- 31:31well he's having lunch in the uh in
- 31:33the grill and he says hey come over
- 31:34here and sit down i want to ask
- 31:35you a couple questions so we're talking
- 31:36about this is it
- 31:38i didn't it just kind of caught me
- 31:39off guard so we're sitting down he
- 31:40finishes lunch and it's like perfect
- 31:42weather and he goes uh what are the
- 31:45odds it just rains on eleven fairway today
- 31:48and i went oh you've seen the videos
- 31:50he goes seen him i love him he's
- 31:52like we can't stop he's like but you
- 31:54make sure we keep it respectful make sure
- 31:56we're not you know and he kind of
- 31:58had a couple points so don't do this
- 31:59don't do that and i said yes sir
- 32:00and when he gave his stamp of approval
- 32:03i was like okay
- 32:04Like I'm all in, right?
- 32:06Because I respect him so much and what
- 32:08he's done and what the family's done.
- 32:10And I respected the staff enough that I
- 32:13didn't want people calling me like,
- 32:14why is that jerk?
- 32:15I didn't want any of that.
- 32:16Have them come talk to me.
- 32:17I'm the guy doing it, right?
- 32:19And so when the staff was cool with
- 32:21it and when he was cool with it,
- 32:21I was like, all right,
- 32:22we just got to keep going.
- 32:24ever feel any of those calls personally
- 32:25like you're like gung-ho about one like i
- 32:28hope somebody like this video that's going
- 32:30to be the one that gets a remark
- 32:31i miss a lot of social cues okay
- 32:33and so early on people would call in
- 32:36and be like hey what's the course record
- 32:37i'll be like well you know annika at
- 32:38the sarah lee shot and they're like aren't
- 32:41you the guy that does the videos and
- 32:43i'm like yeah and he's like i didn't
- 32:44want that answer and i'm like well i
- 32:45have to keep some level of professionalism
- 32:47right yeah like we can't do stand-up all
- 32:50the time
- 32:52Like they're paying me to treat the place,
- 32:55you know?
- 32:56And so now I kind of understand when
- 32:57somebody comes up and they're like, Hey,
- 32:59you know, what's the course record?
- 33:00I'm like, sir,
- 33:01you're going to shoot a hundred.
- 33:02What do you care?
- 33:04And now I kind of realize that people,
- 33:06they want that, you know,
- 33:07which is kind of wild for me.
- 33:09I can't wait till you find the angry
- 33:11guy.
- 33:12No, sir.
- 33:13I've never shot above a seventy four and
- 33:15you're not going to put that hex on
- 33:16me.
- 33:17I had a guy call and say, hey,
- 33:19my son and I are driving through town.
- 33:21We're passing through town.
- 33:23Do you have a junior rate?
- 33:23And I said,
- 33:24I do have a junior rate.
- 33:24How old's your son?
- 33:25He goes, he's eighteen.
- 33:32So I thought he was kidding.
- 33:36And I took it as a chance to
- 33:37make a joke.
- 33:38And I said, I'm sorry.
- 33:41And he goes, yeah, he's eighteen.
- 33:43And he said it kind of like,
- 33:44come on.
- 33:44Come on, funny man.
- 33:46Like I fed you straight line here.
- 33:47I did.
- 33:48So I said...
- 33:51I said, sir, I'm not real smart.
- 33:52I said,
- 33:53but I think we consider him an adult
- 33:55in all the fifty states.
- 33:56So I don't have a junior right for
- 33:57an adult.
- 33:57And he goes,
- 33:58so you won't be a smart aleck.
- 34:00And I thought, okay.
- 34:02And I said, no, no.
- 34:05And he was like,
- 34:05that's some bull crap that you talk to
- 34:07your customer like that.
- 34:09I never show up to your place and
- 34:10hung up.
- 34:11And I was like,
- 34:12what I thought,
- 34:13I thought you want to be.
- 34:14So I have to really be careful on
- 34:17like face to face.
- 34:18I'll do it.
- 34:18If I can read social cues on, okay.
- 34:21Are you really trying to joke around?
- 34:22You know,
- 34:23I'll have a junior course for the,
- 34:25I didn't have, I was like,
- 34:26I don't have a junior right for an
- 34:27adult.
- 34:30sorry sorry i would cry i like i
- 34:33would just pull up a table and watch
- 34:34you do your thing and i would cry
- 34:36like best one is best response i had
- 34:39um i had this older lady come in
- 34:42it gets a little heavy but i i
- 34:44this was unbelievable so the course is
- 34:46busy and i'm kind of holding court i'm
- 34:47talking to people over here i'm talking to
- 34:48people over there and this older lady
- 34:49walks up to me and uh she had
- 34:52two guys with her
- 34:53About my age,
- 34:53I'm thirty six and they look to be
- 34:55about thirty six or seven thirty eight.
- 34:56And she said, hey,
- 34:57I don't want to take too much of
- 34:59your time.
- 34:59She said,
- 35:00I just want you to know that my
- 35:01boys and I,
- 35:01we've driven all the way down from
- 35:02Louisville to come see you.
- 35:04She said, my husband was your biggest fan.
- 35:06He caught you from like video three on.
- 35:08And we just wanted to come down and
- 35:09see the place.
- 35:10We wanted to meet you.
- 35:11We wanted to do all this.
- 35:12She said we were very successful in this
- 35:13world.
- 35:14She said, but unfortunately.
- 35:16My husband and I,
- 35:17we put this off and put this off
- 35:18and put this off.
- 35:19We never put anything off.
- 35:20And she said, unfortunately,
- 35:21my husband passed a heart attack before he
- 35:23could come down and see you.
- 35:25And she said,
- 35:25we're kind of paying homage for my husband
- 35:26and my sons to say, hey,
- 35:28we met him and everything like that.
- 35:30And I said, ma'am,
- 35:31my father passed a heart attack in twenty
- 35:32fifteen.
- 35:33I said,
- 35:33I don't know what it's like to lose
- 35:34a spouse,
- 35:35but that's how my father passed and
- 35:36everything like that.
- 35:37And she said, well,
- 35:37there is one good thing that's come from
- 35:39this.
- 35:39And I said, yes, ma'am.
- 35:41She goes, and she paused.
- 35:43She goes,
- 35:45at least my husband didn't have to waste
- 35:46a three-hour trip to find out you're not
- 35:48as funny in person as you were on
- 35:49the phone.
- 35:49Oh, absolutely wrecked you.
- 35:53And I said, ma'am,
- 35:54let me tell you something.
- 35:56As long as I'm telling stories,
- 35:59I will tell this story everywhere I go
- 36:01because her boys were kind of chuckling.
- 36:02So I think she kind of set them
- 36:04up like, Hey, I'm going to do this.
- 36:06And it was her delivery was so good.
- 36:10So good.
- 36:11So good.
- 36:12I'll never forget that.
- 36:14One of my questions was going to be,
- 36:16has anybody got you?
- 36:17And you got got.
- 36:19She got me.
- 36:19That was a good one.
- 36:21She got me.
- 36:22So I have to ask a question out
- 36:24of my golf course days.
- 36:29I've never played golf on a golf course
- 36:33that had livestock.
- 36:34Yep.
- 36:36Walking around the golf course freely.
- 36:38Yep.
- 36:42Pardon my ignorance.
- 36:43They have sheep that walk around the golf
- 36:44course.
- 36:45Okay.
- 36:45I was going to say,
- 36:46please define livestock.
- 36:47And it's not like,
- 36:48and it's not like two or three.
- 36:50Okay.
- 36:50Sixty, sixty-three.
- 36:52Sixty-three.
- 36:54Sixty-three sheep.
- 36:56You just get ready to hit a shot
- 36:57and one will just come up and say
- 36:58hi to you.
- 36:59Yep.
- 37:00So how do you keep... Go ahead.
- 37:03How do you keep them off the greens?
- 37:05They walk.
- 37:06So they really won't...
- 37:08They stay away from the greens more than
- 37:09you think because they can't get down to
- 37:11eat that grass.
- 37:12They like the taller grass.
- 37:13That's why if you know anything about
- 37:14Hermitage Golf Course,
- 37:15there's the President's Reserve and
- 37:16General's Retreat.
- 37:17They stay mostly on the President's
- 37:18Reserve because the taller grass,
- 37:20the native grass,
- 37:21it's easier for them to eat, right?
- 37:23They really don't mess with the fairways
- 37:24much.
- 37:25They won't mess with the greens at all.
- 37:27And...
- 37:28and even if they do walk across the
- 37:29greens doesn't hurt them no doesn't harm
- 37:33them what what is the the clubhouse rule
- 37:37though if a sheep affects a play you
- 37:39gotta take one home
- 37:45Got him.
- 37:45Was that the answer you were looking for?
- 37:46No!
- 37:48I'm not trying to smoke a rack of
- 37:49lamb over the weekend.
- 37:52Are we losing a stroke?
- 37:53No, they are pretty docile animals.
- 37:56They will kind of scatter and stay out
- 37:58of the way.
- 38:00This time of year, well,
- 38:01this time of year is a little bit
- 38:02different, but like June, July, August,
- 38:03they're looking for shade.
- 38:04Yeah, they're staying up.
- 38:05They're going to stay in the shade.
- 38:06But they really, I mean,
- 38:07they've kind of become almost domesticated
- 38:09where some of them,
- 38:10if you've got like chips in your cart,
- 38:12they'll come up and take the chips and
- 38:14eat it.
- 38:14And, you know,
- 38:15some of the employees are like, oh,
- 38:17that's just Jerry.
- 38:18And I'm like, I have three kids.
- 38:19I can't keep them separate.
- 38:19There's no way you know, you know,
- 38:23And they're like, ah,
- 38:24it's Jerry eating somebody's apple.
- 38:26And I'm like, I'm sorry.
- 38:27Like, is that, is that a starter Marshall?
- 38:29And they're like, nah, it's sheep.
- 38:29Twenty-one.
- 38:34You know, I'm like, okay, but it's sheep.
- 38:36Twenty-one.
- 38:36Chris is out here counting ear tags.
- 38:37They're like, no, no, it's Frank.
- 38:38He's been doing this all week.
- 38:39You can't stop Frank now.
- 38:40He's been doing this for three years.
- 38:41You know, but it started because Mike,
- 38:45the Eller, Mr. Eller who played,
- 38:47who played at whistling straights, um,
- 38:48in Wisconsin.
- 38:49Okay.
- 38:50The sheep followed him for like three or
- 38:52four holes.
- 38:52He thought it was awesome.
- 38:54And who I worked for,
- 38:55who I got in the business,
- 38:56who I was hired by,
- 38:57was a guy named Jim Vernon, who, again,
- 38:59I think the world of.
- 39:00And he was at Hermitage for twenty five
- 39:02years.
- 39:04PGA professional of the year.
- 39:05I mean, he's super good, dude.
- 39:06So Mike calls Jim from Whistling Straits
- 39:11and says, hey,
- 39:11I'm going to put sheep on the golf
- 39:12course.
- 39:13And Jim was like, why?
- 39:17He said, hey, pro,
- 39:18that looks like Scotland out there.
- 39:21We're in Old Hickory, Tennessee.
- 39:23We don't really look like Scotland.
- 39:24He said, no, I'm going to do it.
- 39:26And so this was on like a Wednesday,
- 39:28and they didn't say anything else about
- 39:29it.
- 39:29He didn't say anything else about it.
- 39:31And like ten days later,
- 39:32this dude in a tractor trailer truck shows
- 39:33up, and he's like, hey,
- 39:34I got a twelfth sheet for your golf
- 39:35course.
- 39:36And Jim was like,
- 39:37I don't think you do.
- 39:37And he's like, no, no, no.
- 39:38I've been driving a long time.
- 39:39Those are sheep in the back of that
- 39:40car.
- 39:41And they're not going back with me.
- 39:43No.
- 39:43And this is a one-way trip.
- 39:45And he dropped them off.
- 39:46We started with twelve.
- 39:48We grew to like forty-ish.
- 39:52Um...
- 39:53because, well,
- 39:54we probably grew more to like, thirty,
- 39:56something like that,
- 39:56because we had gotten some more in from
- 39:58Virginia,
- 39:59and then we thought we had took care
- 40:02of all the males, right,
- 40:03where they couldn't reproduce,
- 40:04and we missed one.
- 40:05Yeah, we thought wrong, yeah.
- 40:06And there's a guy who comes out and
- 40:07shears them in the spring, and he's like,
- 40:09well, that one's pregnant,
- 40:10and that one's pregnant.
- 40:11We're like, no, it's not impossible.
- 40:13We took care of that, and he's like,
- 40:13yeah, okay,
- 40:14I only do this for a living.
- 40:17And he was right.
- 40:17Tell the agriculture guy he's wrong.
- 40:19He was right, you know,
- 40:20and so then we got to like,
- 40:22seventy-something.
- 40:23and now we're we've sold a few and
- 40:25and so we're like sixty three sheep but
- 40:27i i used to tell people all the
- 40:28time that when i'd have to speak for
- 40:29the golf course i have to tell that
- 40:31story or uh my contract's not renewed um
- 40:35and i joke around a hundred percent but
- 40:36it's one of the greatest marketing things
- 40:39that's ever been done so outsource all the
- 40:41herd management uh if you mean outsource
- 40:44we do it yeah okay
- 40:48But here's the thing about it.
- 40:49And I'm talking to you like I know
- 40:51what I'm talking about.
- 40:52I really don't.
- 40:52But the sheep know the golf course so
- 40:55well.
- 40:56And it's like,
- 40:57they know the time of day so well
- 40:59that we put them up at night,
- 41:01just left a tin on presidents,
- 41:02which you probably saw when y'all were out
- 41:03playing.
- 41:04We let them out in the morning,
- 41:05about six.
- 41:05And what time is it right now?
- 41:07It's a six.
- 41:08I guarantee you they're standing by that.
- 41:11Waiting for somebody to close that gate.
- 41:13Hilarious.
- 41:14It's unbelievable.
- 41:15It's just a matter of routine.
- 41:16It is.
- 41:16Yeah, it is.
- 41:17And they kind of take the same track
- 41:19every morning.
- 41:20They'll they'll walk kind of down the
- 41:21path, coming to presidents,
- 41:23back to the clubhouse.
- 41:23They'll kind of run around there.
- 41:24And then, I mean, it's.
- 41:27It's unbelievable.
- 41:27In my mind, you get home.
- 41:29Hey, what'd you do today?
- 41:30Well,
- 41:30after I let the sheep out and did
- 41:32feeding chores, I got it.
- 41:34It took five phone calls.
- 41:36Talk to Roger for an hour.
- 41:40Jeff was eating an apple.
- 41:42Yeah.
- 41:42Yeah.
- 41:42Jeff, Jeff stole another guy's hamburger.
- 41:44He did it again.
- 41:45You know,
- 41:46food costs through the roof because sheep,
- 41:48you know, he's healthy.
- 41:53Yeah.
- 41:53He's healthy.
- 41:54Every moment of this, like, like you said,
- 41:56the very beginning of this,
- 41:57the stuff starts to ride itself.
- 41:58Oh yeah.
- 41:59Between the, the,
- 42:00just the natural function of dealing with
- 42:03the public.
- 42:04day-to-day craziness and then sport.
- 42:07Like you've kind of got a trifecta there
- 42:09of... It's an unbelievable job.
- 42:10Right.
- 42:11And I told somebody the other day,
- 42:14we see a hundred thousand people a year.
- 42:17they give us content willingly or
- 42:19unwillingly.
- 42:20Some people know they've given us content
- 42:22because now they know.
- 42:26They'll say something dumb and they're
- 42:28like, oh man, you're that guy.
- 42:29And I'm like, I'm that guy.
- 42:32And some people just don't get it.
- 42:34They're like, hey, I mean,
- 42:36literally guys will show up ten minutes
- 42:37late to their tea time and be like,
- 42:38any chance you can get us out early?
- 42:40And it's like,
- 42:40I don't understand that question, sir.
- 42:43like it's one fifteen you were supposed to
- 42:45be here for a one ten and you
- 42:46just asked if we could get you out
- 42:47early anything i do now you know i
- 42:52mean i don't understand the question and
- 42:55so uh it goes back to that whole
- 42:57not reading a whole lot um but it's
- 43:00a fantastic place and i think it's any
- 43:02kind of walk of life when you're dealing
- 43:03with the public the majority of the people
- 43:05you deal with are awesome
- 43:06Oh, yeah.
- 43:07I mean, they're super cool.
- 43:09But there's always one that stands out.
- 43:11Always.
- 43:11Or a few.
- 43:12Always.
- 43:13But I tell people all the time my
- 43:15job is really cool because I get to
- 43:16go all over the world,
- 43:18and I never leave Old Hickory with who's
- 43:19coming in.
- 43:19Yeah.
- 43:20You got people coming in from Europe.
- 43:21You got people coming in from every part
- 43:23of the country you can imagine,
- 43:25every city of the country you could ever
- 43:26imagine,
- 43:28and they're coming in from everywhere.
- 43:30Yeah.
- 43:32And I wish I could say,
- 43:33it's because of the videos.
- 43:34And there's probably some.
- 43:36Sure.
- 43:36They come down from Louisville.
- 43:38All the time.
- 43:40yeah a lot of people coming in from
- 43:41murfreesboro too but they're coming from
- 43:44everywhere and and it's really cool to see
- 43:46that right i mean because when i first
- 43:48started at hermitage um just kind of the
- 43:50business side of it it was a third
- 43:51a third a third a third of play
- 43:52was out of town a third play was
- 43:54local a third play was um outings and
- 43:58now i bet our out of town place
- 43:59probably closer to forty four forty five
- 44:01forty six percent wow and on the weekend
- 44:03it's probably even higher than that
- 44:05um downtown nashville is bachelor party
- 44:08capital of the world it's insane and um
- 44:11and so that presents its own challenges
- 44:13right because you're trying to manage a
- 44:14place on it's saturday and that's usually
- 44:17the day where hey i can go play
- 44:19golf and i want to go out and
- 44:20have a good time and but i don't
- 44:21want to spend a year on a saturday
- 44:23out there i want to kind of clip
- 44:24through it and um in bachelor parties
- 44:27they're not intentionally trying to slow
- 44:28the golf course down and i would say
- 44:29this to anybody i don't think they're
- 44:31intentionally trying to slow the golf
- 44:32course down but if i t off at
- 44:33eleven
- 44:34we're not going to the southern until
- 44:35seven o'clock at night what do i care
- 44:36if i play fast right i'm gonna drink
- 44:38regardless right i'm either gonna drink on
- 44:40your golf course or i'm gonna drink at
- 44:41a bar right and so they're here and
- 44:43so i don't think they're intentionally
- 44:44trying to do that but that does present
- 44:46challenges when when you know you've got i
- 44:49don't know i think last last friday we
- 44:51had uh twelve groups of twelve or more
- 44:54people
- 44:56All bachelor parties.
- 44:57Wow.
- 44:57So there is kind of a,
- 44:59there's a balance there in the business
- 45:01that you have to try to keep an
- 45:02eye on to make sure you're kind of
- 45:04keeping an eye on everything that's
- 45:05happening.
- 45:05It's crazy.
- 45:06Look,
- 45:07we truly believe in storytelling as far as
- 45:11a business model.
- 45:14A friend of mine named Sean Walsh says,
- 45:17you can build it,
- 45:17but does it mean they're coming, right?
- 45:19You have to go tell your story.
- 45:21And he built his restaurant and nobody
- 45:24showed up and they had to figure out
- 45:25how to do it.
- 45:28I've built my business off of that.
- 45:31we started the show we've done we do
- 45:33a lot of social and stuff like that
- 45:35as well how do you think the business
- 45:37has changed from what it was prior to
- 45:42answering the phone yeah to what it is
- 45:45today
- 45:46I think for golf in general,
- 45:50I think it changed during COVID.
- 45:54Golf,
- 45:55as bad as COVID was for the world,
- 45:56golf took an unbelievable spike across the
- 45:59country,
- 46:00across probably you could even say the
- 46:01world.
- 46:05So we saw a really big rise since
- 46:08COVID.
- 46:08And so I wish I could say, man,
- 46:12I think the videos have brought in X
- 46:14amount of dollars.
- 46:14Have the videos brought in people?
- 46:16Without question.
- 46:19I think it's done a job of reaching
- 46:22people who maybe had never heard of
- 46:24Hermitage Golf Course.
- 46:27they're a golfer they're local or they're
- 46:29in a state that touches tennessee they're
- 46:31on social media they saw our videos pop
- 46:33up because i've had that quite a bit
- 46:35hey i didn't know where hermitage golf
- 46:37course was until i saw your video and
- 46:39so i think it just put eyeballs on
- 46:42on a golf course in old hickory tennessee
- 46:44that is trying to do it right are
- 46:45we are we perfect absolutely not there are
- 46:48days we do it despite ourselves and i
- 46:51have no problem telling the staff that
- 46:53The majority of the time we're doing it
- 46:54because we are active in making you have
- 46:56one of the best times you could ever
- 46:58have on a golf course.
- 47:00So I think it put eyeballs on a
- 47:02place that we were doing it right.
- 47:04We're trying to take care of people.
- 47:06We understand that, hey, man,
- 47:07you're spending one hundred fifteen
- 47:08dollars of your hard earned money.
- 47:09You want to have a great time.
- 47:10Well,
- 47:10we want you to have a great time.
- 47:12And so I think it just put eyeballs
- 47:14on a golf course that maybe people had
- 47:16never heard of.
- 47:17And I don't know if it's.
- 47:19It's so hard to say what it's done
- 47:21for that T-sheet and bottom line and top
- 47:23line because, guys,
- 47:25since about June of twenty twenty,
- 47:28the place has not stopped.
- 47:29We were very fortunate.
- 47:30We were very blessed.
- 47:32And that's not just us.
- 47:32I don't think it's just married to
- 47:33Hermitage Golf Course.
- 47:34I think that's all of golf.
- 47:36But we were very,
- 47:37very fortunate and blessed that since,
- 47:39I mean, the place has been really,
- 47:41really busy.
- 47:41Do you think the live golf tournament or
- 47:45tour has made as big of an impact
- 47:51as something like COVID did?
- 47:53For play or for eyeballs?
- 47:54I think probably so.
- 47:56I mean,
- 47:56I think anything that's new and it pulls
- 47:59some of the top players in the world
- 48:00from the biggest tour in the world,
- 48:02I don't know how it couldn't bring people
- 48:05to the game.
- 48:06I was talking about my dad was watching
- 48:08a live tournament not too long ago,
- 48:11and he is in his late seventies.
- 48:15and so golf to him is persimmon headed
- 48:17woods and steel shafts and and spikes
- 48:19right yep which we have none of those
- 48:21anymore right so like i say that because
- 48:25he's a very traditionalist when it comes
- 48:26to golf yeah um so one of the
- 48:30things he said to me he's watching his
- 48:31turn he's like i can't believe this crap
- 48:34you're wearing shorts yeah
- 48:37on tour yeah yeah they're wearing shorts
- 48:41yeah is that a faux pas so on
- 48:43a pga tour you're not allowed to wear
- 48:45shorts you have to wear pants um i
- 48:48mean long pants you know i'm wearing i'm
- 48:50wearing a golf hoodie yeah and we sell
- 48:52them in the shop and and i've been
- 48:54i've been in the golf is that for
- 48:55fifty bucks
- 49:00That particular one.
- 49:01But the other thing about it is I'm
- 49:04not in the business to break even.
- 49:09I mean, ten years ago,
- 49:11you would have never thought we would sell
- 49:13hoodies in a pro shop or that you
- 49:16would see Rory and some of those big
- 49:18names wearing them out on tour.
- 49:20And so I think golf, well, I mean,
- 49:22listen,
- 49:22I played every sport growing up but golf.
- 49:24I didn't pick up golf till I was
- 49:25nineteen years old.
- 49:26And I think golf,
- 49:28how people viewed it twenty years ago,
- 49:30let's call it when I was sixteen and
- 49:32how people view it now,
- 49:33it's vastly different.
- 49:34You know, I think it's a little more.
- 49:36Twenty years ago,
- 49:37you didn't work out to play golf.
- 49:39It's true.
- 49:40And I think you can thank Tiger for
- 49:42for that.
- 49:42Yeah.
- 49:43And and, you know,
- 49:45and so I think now I think I
- 49:48see more people who.
- 49:50And this is purely just walking around and
- 49:52listening to the facility.
- 49:54People who are just coming in to have
- 49:55a good time.
- 49:56They don't care what they shoot.
- 49:57I mean,
- 49:58you still have those guys who want to
- 49:59go out and try to shoot .
- 50:01And we have a really cool feature at
- 50:02the golf course that your first beer is
- 50:04what you shoot.
- 50:06So if you shoot ,
- 50:07your first beer is .
- 50:10If you shoot ninety,
- 50:11your first beer's ninety.
- 50:14And it's a cool way to get people
- 50:15back into the clubhouse and get people
- 50:17back into the bar grill.
- 50:19And you can have some friendly banter
- 50:21behind the bartender and be like, man,
- 50:23your first beer's a dollar thirty-five.
- 50:24How'd you shoot a hundred and thirty-five?
- 50:27And it looks like you're missing four
- 50:29holes here.
- 50:31So you really shot about one-sixty.
- 50:34How did you double?
- 50:36You doubled a hole you didn't even play,
- 50:38sir.
- 50:39And so I think there's that banter back
- 50:41and forth that people are,
- 50:43I think people want to be entertained.
- 50:44I love it.
- 50:45And so that's what we try to do.
- 50:47Darryl, you got a macro beans for us.
- 50:48Yeah, I got a macro beans.
- 50:49So macro beans are this or that.
- 50:51So you're walking into your favorite
- 50:54barbecue restaurant.
- 50:55Are you ordering the Mac and cheese or
- 50:57the barbecue baked beans?
- 50:58Barbecue baked beans.
- 50:59Okay.
- 50:59Well, he didn't even hesitate.
- 51:00No, it was quick.
- 51:01Yeah.
- 51:02So now my other that,
- 51:04and I've tried to be kind of cool
- 51:05about golf and I don't just so bear
- 51:08with me.
- 51:10You play holes one through seventeen and
- 51:13you birdie all of them.
- 51:15And hole eighteen, you do seventeen over.
- 51:18You're at par.
- 51:20Do you want to play that round,
- 51:21or do you want to play a round
- 51:23where all eighteen holes are par?
- 51:25That's a great question.
- 51:28I would ask why we play all eighteen
- 51:29holes.
- 51:29I'm sorry.
- 51:35We're not twenty-five.
- 51:35I'm sorry.
- 51:37That is a fantastic question.
- 51:39I think I'd want to play...
- 51:42I think I'd want to play the first
- 51:44one.
- 51:44All right.
- 51:45And I don't really have an answer.
- 51:46In my mind,
- 51:47making seventeen birdies would be pretty
- 51:48cool because I'm not sure I've made
- 51:49seventeen birdies in my entire career over
- 51:52the course of all my rounds.
- 51:54But I think that would be pretty neat.
- 51:55Right.
- 51:56You know.
- 51:57Because you're finishing par either way.
- 51:58You're shooting even par.
- 51:59So I want to sit here and think
- 52:01that I did that for some people who
- 52:03have probably never hit par.
- 52:04Right.
- 52:04If you parred eighteen holes in a row,
- 52:06I mean, that would be.
- 52:07Yeah.
- 52:08nearly i got to tell you for a
- 52:09for a non-golfer that is a phenomenal
- 52:12question look i i i come here but
- 52:14i'm gonna have to agree with chris the
- 52:16seventeen birdies in a row all day long
- 52:19yeah all day long because i'll tell you
- 52:22and here's why and i haven't i have
- 52:24a reason why is my very first professional
- 52:27golf tournament one of the guys in my
- 52:30threesome uh shot seventy two that day
- 52:35And he parred all eighteen holes.
- 52:39And it was never missed a fairway,
- 52:41never missed a green, and two putted.
- 52:43I mean, every time.
- 52:47every time yeah and i shot and i
- 52:52had way more fun shooting my than he
- 52:55did shooting his yeah because you probably
- 52:57made a couple birdies it was yes it
- 52:59was it was boring to watch him play
- 53:02now now granted here yeah he made the
- 53:05cut and i didn't right but he got
- 53:07to eat that week yeah he got to
- 53:09eat and i didn't he had potential to
- 53:10get paid and i went home but yeah
- 53:12yeah
- 53:13We had ramen for dinner.
- 53:17I just think that the idea of.
- 53:20Seventeen birdies.
- 53:22would if you're going to finish par let's
- 53:25be honest from a golf standpoint a lot
- 53:27of guys would love to say consistently
- 53:29they could finish par sure so i gave
- 53:31you that that's the softball part you're
- 53:34part of the way i think if you're
- 53:36sitting there making the kind of shot or
- 53:37two putting on the green to where you're
- 53:39hitting birdie every time especially on
- 53:41like some you know par three hole where
- 53:43it's just bang bang they're really good
- 53:45clean shots that'd be awesome and you
- 53:48That's my non-golf take.
- 53:49I don't know about Chris,
- 53:50but I will tell you,
- 53:51I get two birdies in a row and
- 53:52I feel like I am on cloud nine.
- 53:55Yeah.
- 53:55I mean, I'm,
- 53:56I'm calling my wife and like,
- 53:57I know you probably don't care about this,
- 53:58but I just birdie three, four.
- 53:59She's like, no, you didn't.
- 54:00I'm like, okay, you're right.
- 54:01I probably didn't.
- 54:04I think I'm the only guy.
- 54:04She's like, you probably make double.
- 54:06And I was like, okay,
- 54:07I went back to back bogeys,
- 54:07but that's pretty good.
- 54:09I tell people all the time.
- 54:10Yeah.
- 54:11I hit a decent shot.
- 54:12If I got all my shots and spread
- 54:13them over three holes, I'd burn you too.
- 54:15I tell people all the time,
- 54:16I was the only guy,
- 54:17I think I'm the only guy in mini
- 54:18tour history,
- 54:18I hit all eighteen greens and shot
- 54:19seventy-seven.
- 54:21I three putted that many times.
- 54:23And the guy who kept,
- 54:24the guy who didn't keep my scorecard,
- 54:26like you said, I'd hit the fairway,
- 54:27I'd hit the green.
- 54:28He's like, man,
- 54:28that guy had to fire the course record.
- 54:29And I was like, nah,
- 54:30I don't talk to that guy.
- 54:30He's like, what?
- 54:31You seem pretty nice.
- 54:32He's like, dude, you shot a .
- 54:34And he's like, no way.
- 54:35You kept my card.
- 54:36And he's like, no, dude, I mean,
- 54:37I just couldn't putt.
- 54:38So to say I made seventeen birdies or
- 54:40to say I made two birdies,
- 54:42if I made two birdies, I'd quit.
- 54:47Chris, like, that's it.
- 54:48I'm at the clubhouse.
- 54:49Yeah,
- 54:49you know how people hit a hole in
- 54:50one.
- 54:51They're like, oh, you got to buy drinks.
- 54:52Like, let's go.
- 54:53If I birdied a hole and then I
- 54:55followed it up with another birdie,
- 54:56I'd say, hey, boys,
- 54:57y'all just let's go to the bar.
- 54:59I'll catch y'all.
- 54:59I don't really drink,
- 55:00but let's go to the bar.
- 55:01I'll be having a seltzer and water.
- 55:03Y'all just take me up on the way
- 55:04out.
- 55:04Hey, I just, you know.
- 55:06Yeah.
- 55:07Because I don't think people understand,
- 55:10like you see people do it on television
- 55:11or you see people do it in a
- 55:12college event or even a high school event
- 55:13or whatever the case may be.
- 55:15I don't think people understand how good a
- 55:17round of golf it is to shoot even
- 55:18par.
- 55:19Or even to break eighty,
- 55:22to break seventy-eight.
- 55:23I don't think people truly understand.
- 55:25Like,
- 55:26the golfer doesn't understand the amount
- 55:29of force and energy you have to generate
- 55:31to hit a golf ball three hundred yards.
- 55:32I used to fit,
- 55:34when I got in the business,
- 55:36I used to fit for Titleist.
- 55:39And the amount of people would be like,
- 55:40I hit it three hundred.
- 55:41And I'm like, I don't think you do.
- 55:42No.
- 55:42And I'm not being mean,
- 55:43but like the amount of force and energy
- 55:45you have to strike that golf ball.
- 55:46You may have done it once.
- 55:47Right.
- 55:48You are not going to go do it
- 55:48again.
- 55:49Right.
- 55:49Yeah.
- 55:49And because it was a creative character on
- 55:51PGA Tour,
- 55:52that does not mean that translates into
- 55:54real life.
- 55:56Yeah.
- 55:57It should have seen the way I hit
- 55:58the ball on top.
- 55:58You know, I got that backstool, man.
- 55:59And to say, hey, look,
- 56:00you hit it two fifty, two sixty.
- 56:02Like that is still great.
- 56:04It's great.
- 56:04Yeah, that's great.
- 56:06It's a hard game.
- 56:07It's a hard game.
- 56:08it is a very hard game it's a
- 56:09lot of fun and it's a great game
- 56:11and and i'm in i'm fortunate to be
- 56:12where i'm at but it's a hard game
- 56:14yeah yeah and that's why i said even
- 56:16though like the people are like oh you
- 56:18walk eighteen holes that's the toughest
- 56:20part about it first of all no it's
- 56:21not secondly the person the the non-golfer
- 56:24me i will always respect what is happening
- 56:27just the physics behind it don't always
- 56:29make sense.
- 56:29I mean, and, and,
- 56:31and I saw a graphic today that they
- 56:33were talking about ball placement based on
- 56:36what, uh,
- 56:37what club you're using and it should be
- 56:38out in front or, you know what?
- 56:40And I'm like, I would never like,
- 56:42I just, to me,
- 56:43you've always just go out there and you
- 56:44hit the ball, you know?
- 56:45So I respect the game wildly, but.
- 56:48I think it's fun that somebody in your
- 56:51spot can step back and be like, Hey,
- 56:52you know what?
- 56:53Let's just have some fun with this.
- 56:55Like it doesn't have to be so tight,
- 56:58gripped, white knuckled all the time.
- 56:59That's right.
- 57:00And, and I think it's a blast.
- 57:01So I think you got a fan out
- 57:02of me from golf and from,
- 57:05from just content and stuff.
- 57:06So well done.
- 57:08Well, what's on the,
- 57:08what's on the horizon for, uh, hermitage.
- 57:14We just opened two lodges, right?
- 57:16So now we have eight cottages and two
- 57:18lodges so we can sleep a total of
- 57:19sixty four people.
- 57:21So that's exciting.
- 57:22Literally,
- 57:23when I say we just opened and we
- 57:24opened them up Monday after Labor Day,
- 57:26Tuesday of Labor Day.
- 57:28And so that's it.
- 57:29Right.
- 57:29I mean,
- 57:30it's it's trying to it's trying to keep
- 57:32going what we've got going.
- 57:33Right.
- 57:34And I know that sounds cliche ish,
- 57:36but that's it.
- 57:36Like we just want to we just want
- 57:38to keep going what we got.
- 57:39It's a good thing.
- 57:40It's a good place with a lot of
- 57:41really, really good people.
- 57:44so yeah there's no real big plans for
- 57:45hermitage other than just try to keep on
- 57:47keeping on yeah are we uh are we
- 57:50continuing the social media are we gonna
- 57:53we got anything from a social standpoint
- 57:56that's going to to grab attention
- 58:00differently than it does now yeah
- 58:03um we're gonna keep doing it um we've
- 58:05jotted some ideas to do like some more
- 58:07theatrical type stuff right and maybe not
- 58:09so much of the golf shop videos which
- 58:11we'll still do some of those um but
- 58:13we're gonna film some stuff like on the
- 58:15like we did i don't know if y'all
- 58:16saw the video of like the tsa um
- 58:19where we act like we're checking the guy
- 58:21coming through tsa and we dump the bag
- 58:22out and he's got iron covers like we're
- 58:23gonna do more of that
- 58:25That's great.
- 58:26We're going to do more of that.
- 58:27I need you to incorporate the sheep.
- 58:30Work them in.
- 58:31I don't know how you'll do that without
- 58:32probably taking off some of the sheep and
- 58:34messing up the herd there.
- 58:36I'm trying to think if we did.
- 58:37Did we do something?
- 58:38We did something with Two Rivers Forward.
- 58:41It's our corporate sponsor.
- 58:42And we did something, sheep power.
- 58:45We did a video.
- 58:46Instead of like horsepower, I was like,
- 58:48what's the sheep power?
- 58:49Okay.
- 58:49And I was like, you know,
- 58:50like we have the metric system and all
- 58:51that.
- 58:52Like,
- 58:52how do you convert that to sheet power?
- 58:54And the people from Two Rivers were great.
- 58:55They were so much fun with that.
- 58:57So we had a lot of fun.
- 58:57I don't know why my head just went
- 58:59to like Mario Kart.
- 59:04Yeah.
- 59:04Like something like, I don't know,
- 59:05but yeah.
- 59:07And that's what I enjoy.
- 59:07Right.
- 59:08I, um, Chris come back there next time.
- 59:09Yeah.
- 59:10That's it.
- 59:12North Carolina dirt track, you know,
- 59:14seeing sheep.
- 59:15Twenty-one steal somebody's hamburger.
- 59:17They get an automatic bird.
- 59:18Twenty-one doesn't even know he's made the
- 59:20show and he's now a star.
- 59:22My guy asked me where we bought the
- 59:23deer from.
- 59:28They came natural.
- 59:29I did.
- 59:29He said, did you buy?
- 59:30And I, again,
- 59:31maybe the guy thought it was going to
- 59:32be a bit.
- 59:32Yeah.
- 59:33And he said,
- 59:34so do y'all buy the deer from the
- 59:35same place you bought the sheep?
- 59:36I just answered, yep.
- 59:38I said, no.
- 59:39And he was shocked.
- 59:40I said, you know, the deer live,
- 59:41I mean, they're kind of like around here.
- 59:43And he was like, oh,
- 59:43I thought maybe y'all got like a deal.
- 59:45Yeah, we got two for one deal.
- 59:48Have you bought thirty sheep?
- 59:49We'll throw in eight deer.
- 59:50You know?
- 59:53no we're never short of content and uh
- 1:00:05i heard some comedians who i think are
- 1:00:06really really funny and stand-up comedians
- 1:00:09um
- 1:00:10I was fortunate enough,
- 1:00:10I got to meet a guy named Jeff
- 1:00:11Allen, who has his own podcast as well.
- 1:00:13And Jeff's a stand up comedian for forty
- 1:00:15years.
- 1:00:15And he asked me to do a thing
- 1:00:17with him at the Anti-Predator Project at
- 1:00:20Zany's.
- 1:00:21And so I got to do Zany's,
- 1:00:22which was really, really cool.
- 1:00:23And then I played.
- 1:00:24But I heard them talk about like.
- 1:00:27your jokes and how you craft your jokes
- 1:00:29and like you need to look on the
- 1:00:32world on i i can't believe that happened
- 1:00:35to me too i can make that funny
- 1:00:37and when you see it through that lens
- 1:00:40anything and everything can be funny and i
- 1:00:42just thought that was so cool hearing that
- 1:00:44from him and then hearing from other
- 1:00:45comedians that i watch their podcast and i
- 1:00:46think the world of they all kind of
- 1:00:48have that attitude on you just have to
- 1:00:50kind of be on the lookout for the
- 1:00:51most mundane task
- 1:00:53How can I make that funny?
- 1:00:56And that's kind of what some of us
- 1:00:57do at Hermitage,
- 1:00:58and it just kind of seems to work
- 1:00:59out from time to time.
- 1:01:00That rocks.
- 1:01:01That's just great.
- 1:01:02I need to do some more funny content.
- 1:01:05Yeah.
- 1:01:06How can I make a pig funny?
- 1:01:11don't leave that alone yeah like that and
- 1:01:13that could ride itself just gonna say
- 1:01:15y'all i think y'all have pretty good
- 1:01:21episodes i don't know how to land the
- 1:01:22plane right there pretty good show up
- 1:01:24until the fifty-eight minute mark what
- 1:01:26went bad i started talking about pigs i
- 1:01:28said something about making a pig funny
- 1:01:29and i kind of got weird from there
- 1:01:32you know
- 1:01:33Leave it to the barbecue guy.
- 1:01:34That's right.
- 1:01:38Yeah.
- 1:01:38You got a Friday feel good for it.
- 1:01:40Don't take life so serious.
