- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hurley on Mike Crispino, Uh A long time ago. I
- 0:06Speaker 1: know you're kind of a movie guy. There was that
- 0:09Speaker 1: that thing with Clint Eastwood, The good, the bad, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: the ugly, the little spaghetti westerns. I like those things.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So we're not going to talk about we talked about
- 0:17Speaker 1: the bad. Now here we are segment two, Let's talk
- 0:19Speaker 1: about some of the good that you saw on opening
- 0:23Speaker 1: night against New Haven.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You were asking me what was going what was so well,
- 0:31Speaker 2: here's the situation with the I mean, these video sessions
- 0:34Speaker 2: have been really long, you know, like like you know,
- 0:39Speaker 2: days after you play poorly, those video sessions are longer.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And what we're finding is, you know we're not and
- 0:48Speaker 2: usually able to knock it out in one day. But
- 0:51Speaker 2: we're getting into you know, Michigan State obviously with that
- 0:55Speaker 2: with you know, with that exhibition, you know, the individual defense,
- 1:00Speaker 2: the softness on the backboard, you know, the lack of
- 1:04Speaker 2: assists at the offensive end of the court. You know,
- 1:06Speaker 2: we're just we're not ourselves in a lot of ways.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So you know, there's not a lot when you say
- 1:12Speaker 2: a positive thing that comes to my mind coming out
- 1:15Speaker 2: of a game. I'm having like a harder time with that,
- 1:20Speaker 2: besides the fact that we were eventually able to just
- 1:22Speaker 2: walk away with a win, but they're just in terms
- 1:25Speaker 2: of just the way that we played that there wasn't
- 1:29Speaker 2: much positive for us.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Yeah, you out rebounted them forty to twenty five. I
- 1:35Speaker 1: know you know in the championship years a couple of
- 1:37Speaker 1: years ago, that was a big number pretty much every night.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And the block shot number for Yukon and the assist number,
- 1:43Speaker 1: which I wanted to bring up because you had eleven
- 1:46Speaker 1: assists as a team twelve turnovers. I know you work
- 1:50Speaker 1: on that chalkboard before every game and you put up
- 1:53Speaker 1: goals for the team. I'm pretty sure you didn't have
- 1:57Speaker 1: a goal of eleven assists twelve turnovers for Ukunn.
- 2:01Speaker 2: No, it was it was twenty one assists to six turnovers.
- 2:06Speaker 2: It was plus twenty five on the backboard, It was
- 2:10Speaker 2: twenty more offensive rebounds for us. It was keeping them
- 2:13Speaker 2: to thirty three percent from the field overall, not forty
- 2:17Speaker 2: seven or whatever they shot. It was no one on
- 2:19Speaker 2: their team getting double figures. It was us scoring thirty
- 2:24Speaker 2: plus points off turnovers, and in transition, it was it
- 2:27Speaker 2: was them scoring less than fourteen points in the paint.
- 2:31Speaker 2: It was literally it was fifty identity plays, wall ups
- 2:35Speaker 2: at the rim, charges taken, deflections, turnovers, forced, the floor dives.
- 2:39Speaker 3: I mean, we literally didn't hit, you know, on anything.
- 2:43Speaker 2: And you know it's listen, Taris, it's you know, we
- 2:51Speaker 2: need to get Tarifs back in the lineup here. You know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: once he's healthy enough, I think that'll change the complexion.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Of the team.
- 2:59Speaker 2: And and then I think, you know, we need to
- 3:02Speaker 2: get Braillin back and healthy or fur feedback and healthy,
- 3:07Speaker 2: because we need to get that kind of competition back.
- 3:10Speaker 2: For minutes, I felt like people you had a number
- 3:13Speaker 2: of players that didn't deserve the minutes that they ended
- 3:15Speaker 2: up playing the other night.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Yeah, the Huskies have a couple coming up here Friday
- 3:21Speaker 1: at People's Bank Arena's UMass Lowell and then on Monday
- 3:25Speaker 1: out of the IVY League Columbia at Gamble. What do
- 3:29Speaker 1: you hope to accomplish here in these two games, because
- 3:31Speaker 1: then the Gauntlet starts. You start with all these top
- 3:34Speaker 1: twenty teams, which I know the challenge is going to
- 3:37Speaker 1: be big, and you want to be healthy for all
- 3:39Speaker 1: of that. You're probably not going to be one hundred
- 3:40Speaker 1: percent healthy. So what do you hope to accomplish in
- 3:43Speaker 1: these next two.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously, the defense, I think, you know, is the
- 3:48Speaker 2: biggest thing that you're looking at, just becoming sturdier, more physical, smarter,
- 3:54Speaker 2: more competitive, better fundamentals, better will guarding the basketball. You know,
- 4:00Speaker 2: you're guarding a righty who's caught the ball pretty deep
- 4:04Speaker 2: on the left side of the court, where you've got
- 4:08Speaker 2: you know, four other basketball players and you have an
- 4:10Speaker 2: opportunity to send them out as we can into an
- 4:13Speaker 2: area where you have help, and we're allowing people to
- 4:16Speaker 2: go right hand middle where there's not much help. So
- 4:19Speaker 2: some of it is techniques, some of it is smart,
- 4:22Speaker 2: some of it is fundamentals. Some of it is physical strength,
- 4:26Speaker 2: not playing with enough force. And again, we've got all
- 4:31Speaker 2: the resources in the world to be able to put
- 4:34Speaker 2: you know, athletic, explosive, strong athletes that are not getting
- 4:40Speaker 2: you know, kind of bullied on the court in one
- 4:42Speaker 2: on one matchups. So I think that that one on
- 4:46Speaker 2: one individual defense is a starting point. Obviously, the ability
- 4:50Speaker 2: to also help teammates when they do a good enough
- 4:52Speaker 2: job and help can help. And then the sharpness, you know,
- 4:57Speaker 2: how many layups did we miss? How many open shots
- 5:01Speaker 2: did we miss? How many people that were open did
- 5:03Speaker 2: we not throw the ball on time?
- 5:05Speaker 3: So just a.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Sharpness and obviously the defensive thing. And it's not you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: I believe in the team. I think the team's got
- 5:14Speaker 2: a real chance, especially as we get some of these
- 5:16Speaker 2: people back. We need better leadership, you know, we need
- 5:20Speaker 2: to you know, we need Alex to you know, be
- 5:22Speaker 2: a better leader out there as well, be more vocal,
- 5:27Speaker 2: you know, drive his teammates, uphold the standard as a
- 5:30Speaker 2: two time champion.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I got a buzzword for you here that didn't I
- 5:35Speaker 1: know you have it, but sometimes it's not always easy
- 5:39Speaker 1: to communicate it to your team. An edge. And the
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yukon championship teams last couple of years there they had
- 5:46Speaker 1: an edge. I felt like when people came to play
- 5:49Speaker 1: the Huskies, they were gonna get in a fight. It's
- 5:52Speaker 1: gonna be a fistfight somehow. And I don't know if
- 5:55Speaker 1: I see it yet, and I don't know if you
- 5:57Speaker 1: see it. And is that something that's important to you.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Well, the thing is, you know, when you when you
- 6:01Speaker 2: address the team a lot, you're in the video room
- 6:03Speaker 2: and you're you know, you know that in no seats
- 6:06Speaker 2: you've had a Domason Ogo and Andre Jackson and Donovan
- 6:11Speaker 2: Klingen and Steph Castle and just warriors and winners and
- 6:16Speaker 2: guys that were clutch performers.
- 6:18Speaker 3: And you know that's the standard.
- 6:21Speaker 2: And obviously, you know, it's like it's at the Spider
- 6:24Speaker 2: Man movie whatever. Too much to whom much is given,
- 6:27Speaker 2: much is expected. You know, there's a you know, we've
- 6:30Speaker 2: been invested a lot in these players, not for them
- 6:33Speaker 2: to play basketball here, but for them to play basketball
- 6:36Speaker 2: at a certain level here, at a certain level at
- 6:41Speaker 2: both ends of the court, with maximum effort and being
- 6:44Speaker 2: all about winning games. And uh, that's the standard that
- 6:48Speaker 2: that we've got to hold them too. And when they're
- 6:50Speaker 2: not playing or competing to that standard, that the coach
- 6:53Speaker 2: is going to be pissed.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, so safe to say you haven't been in a
- 6:58Speaker 1: very good mood in the last day or two.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Well, you're getting me fresh off the court today and
- 7:03Speaker 2: and straight out of the video session that uh so
- 7:06Speaker 2: it was just the practice. Uh you know, this was
- 7:09Speaker 2: the first practice of being with them since the New
- 7:14Speaker 2: Haven game and then the video session that we had
- 7:18Speaker 2: part one of it, and we still have part two.
- 7:22Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm my blood is boiling.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Okay, well, thanks for coming on the air with us,
- 7:29Speaker 1: because it's it's a formative.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Just by the time I get to my car, I'm
- 7:36Speaker 2: gonna I I've got to make sure I'm going to
- 7:38Speaker 2: do a ten minute meditation. Uh but you know, make
- 7:42Speaker 2: sure you know, Bob and you know Mike that I'm
- 7:44Speaker 2: going to do a ten minute meditation so that before
- 7:47Speaker 2: I get behind the wheel, that I'm not that that
- 7:49Speaker 2: Connecticut road rage driver that's still angry and now he's
- 7:53Speaker 2: he's tailing people and he's leaning on the horn, and
- 7:56Speaker 2: you know, I'm gonna.
- 7:59Speaker 1: All, well, thankfully, that's good. I can see that you're
- 8:03Speaker 1: you have it under control sort of.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Okay.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Back after this time out with Dan Early, the Yukon
- 8:09Speaker 1: Men's Basketball Coaches Show continues on liar Field
