- 0:58Speaker 1: you can have the latest edition of this podcast delivered
- 1:01Speaker 1: write to your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitch,
- 1:05Speaker 1: your Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest
- 1:08Speaker 1: thing since the Ring of Honor tribute video. At halftime
- 1:13Speaker 1: of tonight's game, the Bengals will induct their inaugural Ring
- 1:16Speaker 1: of Honor class, made up of Paul Brown, Anthony Munio's,
- 1:19Speaker 1: Ken Anderson, and Ken Riley. If you haven't watched it already,
- 1:23Speaker 1: you have to check out the seventeen minute and thirty
- 1:26Speaker 1: second video called Best in Class that can be found
- 1:30Speaker 1: on Bengals dot com and YouTube. It was written and
- 1:32Speaker 1: narrated by Bengals dot Com editor Jeff Hobson, and it's
- 1:35Speaker 1: a tremendous history lesson on this year's Ring of Honor class.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Don't take my word for it, watch it as soon
- 1:42Speaker 1: as you finish this podcast. Now, let's get to my guests,
- 1:46Speaker 1: beginning with Jamar Chase, who last week became the ninth
- 1:49Speaker 1: player in history to catch a touchdown pass and each
- 1:53Speaker 1: of his first three NFL games. Jamar, here's my first
- 1:57Speaker 1: hard hitting question, how the heck did you hold on
- 2:00Speaker 1: to that long touchdown pass last week? Because it looked
- 2:03Speaker 1: like you caught the back third of the football, just
- 2:06Speaker 1: all the ball hand out coordination and concentrating on the
- 2:08Speaker 1: ball and it was following it all the way through
- 2:11Speaker 1: the catch, so ended up holding on to a thing.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Got out of here it. That touchdown pass came with
- 2:17Speaker 1: thirty seven seconds left in the half. And here's how
- 2:20Speaker 1: Joe Burrow described it after the game quote, Jamar came
- 2:23Speaker 1: up to me before that play and said, just throw
- 2:25Speaker 1: it up to me, just throw it. Did that really happen?
- 2:28Speaker 1: And if so, why did you tell him that? Uh? Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: that did happen. I told him if I had forty
- 2:34Speaker 1: two him and just throw it up. I only told
- 2:36Speaker 1: him that because I've seen the first time of previous play.
- 2:39Speaker 1: We ran the same play, and I told him what
- 2:42Speaker 1: I've seen from the exact same last place. I was
- 2:45Speaker 1: like about through it again. I just throw it this
- 2:46Speaker 1: time and I know if it's surely don't work. So
- 2:49Speaker 1: capitalized on it. Great call, great catch. We're visiting with
- 2:52Speaker 1: Jamar Chase. So that touchdown pass stung the fans in
- 2:56Speaker 1: Pittsburgh because the Steelers had tied the game and then
- 2:58Speaker 1: twenty seven seconds later you score the touchdown. Can you
- 3:02Speaker 1: describe what it's like to shut up a road crowd? Well,
- 3:06Speaker 1: it was quiet, and that feel like the home game.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Almost when we had the ball, they started making a
- 3:10Speaker 1: little noise on the offense on defensive side when the
- 3:13Speaker 1: defense got out there, So that just means some of
- 3:16Speaker 1: our fans got out got Pistoburgh's fans going along with us,
- 3:19Speaker 1: so it was good. Let's get to your second touchdown catch.
- 3:24Speaker 1: We heard after the game that you were Joe Burrows
- 3:26Speaker 1: fifth read. How unusual is it to see the ball
- 3:31Speaker 1: when you're the fifth read on a play, right, as
- 3:35Speaker 1: usually we have something for it. Of course, that's why
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'm the fifth read. I'm just worked trying to work
- 3:39Speaker 1: my way across the fields and make sure I'll stay
- 3:41Speaker 1: in the play, make sure if the players keeps going
- 3:43Speaker 1: that I'm in Joe's view. Um, I actually didn't see
- 3:46Speaker 1: Joe at all. I've just seen the ball come out
- 3:48Speaker 1: of his hands and that's all I seen was the
- 3:50Speaker 1: ball flying in the air and had to be at me.
- 3:53Speaker 1: That was a tribute to the offensive line right for
- 3:55Speaker 1: hit them to give that kind of protection. Shout out
- 3:58Speaker 1: I said. I definitely get him a shout out doing
- 4:00Speaker 1: my interview at the last game, though, those buzz held
- 4:02Speaker 1: it down for chatting with Jamar Chase. You beat a
- 4:05Speaker 1: three time Pro Bowl around that play. Joe Hayden. Is
- 4:08Speaker 1: it a big deal for you to compete against guys
- 4:11Speaker 1: you grew up watching on TV? Oh? Yeah, definitely, just
- 4:14Speaker 1: because of you know, just experience I'm in right now. Um.
- 4:17Speaker 1: You know, I can't wait to grold and tell my kids,
- 4:18Speaker 1: you know, grandkids and stuff like that. But um, it's
- 4:21Speaker 1: just a blessing, you know what I'm saying, just to
- 4:23Speaker 1: watch those guys m be Hall of Fame famous talk
- 4:27Speaker 1: about and and you know, have the opportunity to go
- 4:29Speaker 1: against them and work my craft. So h it's just
- 4:33Speaker 1: something you gotta be tick part of and love battling
- 4:36Speaker 1: growing old. It's not all it's cracked up to be. Trusting.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Let's go back to the preseason when you were uncharacteristically
- 4:42Speaker 1: dropping some passes. Every receiver drops balls. But have you
- 4:47Speaker 1: ever had a stretch like that? Uh No, Nah, not really. Um,
- 4:52Speaker 1: I've always caught my pass when they were here to me. Um,
- 4:56Speaker 1: majority of time. If I'm wide open, I did want
- 4:59Speaker 1: in a CHAMPI been shipped. I let the ball come
- 5:02Speaker 1: to track to me too close and messed up my
- 5:04Speaker 1: fingers on that play. But no, not too often. When
- 5:08Speaker 1: people ask me about you during the preseason, I said
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'm not worried for two reasons. Number One, there's no
- 5:13Speaker 1: history of it. Number Two, I've never seen a guy
- 5:16Speaker 1: catch more passes after practice than you do, whether it's
- 5:20Speaker 1: out the jugs machine or from quarterbacks. It's crazy. Did
- 5:25Speaker 1: you do that even more than usual this training camp?
- 5:27Speaker 1: Or is that the norm for you? That's actually pretty normal.
- 5:30Speaker 1: When I was at LSU, I was always doing it
- 5:32Speaker 1: after practice too, sometimes before practice, just to get my
- 5:35Speaker 1: hands going. I know on Mondays in college, I used
- 5:38Speaker 1: to do no glove Monday just to get my hands
- 5:40Speaker 1: prepare for the rest of the day. So it's Thursday
- 5:43Speaker 1: night football this week, your first NFL prime time game.
- 5:47Speaker 1: What's this mean to you? Just means another game on
- 5:50Speaker 1: the list, you know, just a different day, earlier day.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Just gotta get in my film, get on the plays, Michelle,
- 5:57Speaker 1: I execute the right way and just concentrateing have ton
- 6:00Speaker 1: of vision into this game. In high school and college,
- 6:02Speaker 1: you don't play two games in five days. How challenging
- 6:05Speaker 1: is that? That's pretty exciting to be honest, just to
- 6:09Speaker 1: have this transition change that fast. I woke up today
- 6:12Speaker 1: like what is today really? When I walked in the building,
- 6:14Speaker 1: because I realized it was so fast, but you gotta
- 6:18Speaker 1: like it, you know what I'm saying. I'm pretty excited
- 6:19Speaker 1: about this game, just because it's a Thursday game, and
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know, it's just happening so fast for me, so
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm excited for it. You look like you're having a blast,
- 6:29Speaker 1: are you. Yeah. I am having fun. Joe even told
- 6:32Speaker 1: me this is fun. So as long as Joe having fun,
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm having fun. The offense having fun. Defense is flying
- 6:38Speaker 1: around having fun. It's gonna be a great football team.
- 6:40Speaker 1: We're having fun watching. Congratulations on a great start. I
- 6:43Speaker 1: appreciate your time. Thank you. If Jamar catches a touchdown
- 6:47Speaker 1: pass tonight, he'll join Martavis Bryant, Dante Stalworth, and Charlie
- 6:52Speaker 1: Brown as the only players in history with touchdown catches
- 6:55Speaker 1: and each of their first four NFL games. Not that
- 6:59Speaker 1: Charlie Brown, this one was a two time Pro bowler
- 7:02Speaker 1: for Washington. The Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by Bud
- 7:06Speaker 1: Light Seltzer. It's light and refreshing with a hint of
- 7:09Speaker 1: fruit flavor. Now time to discuss some of the key
- 7:11Speaker 1: storylines heading into tonight's game with my broadcast partner Dave Lapham.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Lap Your first NFL coach and three of your former
- 7:19Speaker 1: teammates make up the first Ring of Honored class that
- 7:21Speaker 1: will be inducted at halftime on Thursday. Do I need
- 7:24Speaker 1: to have some cleanex available in the broadcast booth? It
- 7:28Speaker 1: is going to be a very special night, for sure,
- 7:32Speaker 1: you know. I think it's it's long overdue celebration of
- 7:37Speaker 1: their greatness. And the first class is just no brainer,
- 7:44Speaker 1: unbelievable accomplishments. And the common denominator is, as we said
- 7:48Speaker 1: many times for as great coach, player, et cetera, that
- 7:52Speaker 1: they were top notch, you know, quality human being that
- 7:58Speaker 1: has done not things for their fashion, but things for humanity,
- 8:02Speaker 1: you know, things for society, things for the world. And
- 8:05Speaker 1: Paul Brown was always one that was very interested in
- 8:09Speaker 1: what are you gonna do when you're done with football?
- 8:11Speaker 1: He'd tell us all the time, men, football, this is
- 8:14Speaker 1: just a short phase of your life. When you're done
- 8:15Speaker 1: playing football, you're gonna be young people. You'll still be
- 8:18Speaker 1: in your early thirties for the most part, maybe even
- 8:20Speaker 1: younger than that. What are you going to do with yourself?
- 8:23Speaker 1: What are you going to do? How are you going
- 8:24Speaker 1: to be successful? And he always monitored and track guys,
- 8:28Speaker 1: and he'd be extremely proud of these three guys going
- 8:31Speaker 1: into the Ring of Honors man. They accomplished even more
- 8:36Speaker 1: probably or at least as much when they were done playing,
- 8:39Speaker 1: as they did when they played. And it's not just
- 8:41Speaker 1: about Paul Brown and those three players. This week, nearly
- 8:44Speaker 1: forty members of the nineteen eighty one Super Bowl team
- 8:46Speaker 1: will also be celebrated. The fortieth anniversary of that season
- 8:51Speaker 1: is obviously this year. I know, coming up short in
- 8:54Speaker 1: the Super Bowl still stings, But twelve teams have never
- 8:58Speaker 1: won one. Four teams have never been to one forty
- 9:01Speaker 1: years later. Is there a different bond between a team
- 9:05Speaker 1: that made it to a Super Bowl and the other
- 9:07Speaker 1: ones that you played on? Yeah? I think I think
- 9:09Speaker 1: that even though getting over the bitterness of losing the
- 9:12Speaker 1: biggest game in your life and not playing well, that's
- 9:15Speaker 1: the thing that bothers you. I mean, if you had,
- 9:17Speaker 1: if you had played lights out and you lost, because
- 9:20Speaker 1: you know, they were just so that team was on
- 9:23Speaker 1: that day and they were great, you know, I think
- 9:25Speaker 1: I think it might be easier to accept. But we
- 9:29Speaker 1: outgained them, you know, we thought we were the better
- 9:31Speaker 1: football team. That the self destruction part of it just
- 9:34Speaker 1: man just stays with you. It's like we just had
- 9:36Speaker 1: taken care of business on our end of things and
- 9:38Speaker 1: not put ourselves on our schedule, probably be walking around
- 9:41Speaker 1: with super Bowl rings rather than just AFC Championship rings.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But I do think that that that AFC Championship the
- 9:47Speaker 1: first one enfranchise history that this team, to me, the
- 9:52Speaker 1: eighty one Super Bowl sixteen is just like a part
- 9:55Speaker 1: of it and it's not a successful part of it
- 9:58Speaker 1: memory wise, but this team was the first team to
- 10:01Speaker 1: win a playoff game, the first team to win an
- 10:03Speaker 1: NFC championship, And that's the thing that I think I
- 10:06Speaker 1: am very proud of, and I know a lot of
- 10:07Speaker 1: other guys that I'm friends with on the team are
- 10:10Speaker 1: extremely proud of, and that the eighty one Super Bowl
- 10:13Speaker 1: to have the freezea Bowl connotation. You know, it's a
- 10:16Speaker 1: unique special game. It's a very historic NFL game because
- 10:19Speaker 1: of the weather conditions and everything. To be part of
- 10:21Speaker 1: that is you know, something telling my grandkids about, for
- 10:24Speaker 1: example today. So I can't believe it's forty years but
- 10:30Speaker 1: Father Time's undefeated. Man, there's no doubt except for Tom Brady,
- 10:33Speaker 1: Tom Brady one, and oh versus father time so far.
- 10:36Speaker 1: All right, let's get to this year's team two and
- 10:38Speaker 1: one after last week's big win in Pittsburgh. I want
- 10:41Speaker 1: to talk about the defense. Sixth in points allowed, fifth
- 10:45Speaker 1: in yards per run aloud, fourth in yards per pass
- 10:48Speaker 1: attempt allowed, which speaks to how good they've been in
- 10:51Speaker 1: every phase. When did you start to think that this
- 10:54Speaker 1: group it's going to be pretty darn good? Yeah, I
- 10:57Speaker 1: mean when we were watching training camp, Damn, We're like,
- 11:00Speaker 1: is the defense that good? Or is the offense that bad?
- 11:02Speaker 1: You know, and you're going again, They're going against each
- 11:04Speaker 1: other every day, and so it's hard to it's hard
- 11:07Speaker 1: to draw any conclusions until they start playing other other opponents.
- 11:11Speaker 1: But come to find out on defensive line and is
- 11:15Speaker 1: very good. I mean, and I think it's going to
- 11:18Speaker 1: be a very interesting challenge for them in this football
- 11:21Speaker 1: game on Thursday night because I think the Jacksonville Jaguars
- 11:25Speaker 1: interior their centers good man, that's a salty dude. He's
- 11:28Speaker 1: a hell of a player. And the guards are adequate.
- 11:31Speaker 1: They're they're very solid NFL players. I think the Bengals
- 11:34Speaker 1: advantage is at tackling tight end, you know, on the edge.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So the big defensive tackles, which that's that's the thing
- 11:40Speaker 1: that impressed us is watch them. It's so big. I mean,
- 11:43Speaker 1: nobody Bengals aren't moving them or other people are going
- 11:46Speaker 1: to be able to move them. Nobody's really been able
- 11:47Speaker 1: to move them all that much. As you mentioned the
- 11:49Speaker 1: numbers in the in the running game, no running back
- 11:52Speaker 1: is gotten over sixty one yards against them, and they're
- 11:55Speaker 1: going to be challenged this week. You know, Robinson is
- 11:57Speaker 1: a is a hell of a back and you know,
- 12:00Speaker 1: uh Hides a great one as well, and they're really
- 12:03Speaker 1: good between the tackles, running their their duo's inside zone
- 12:07Speaker 1: and you know, draw plays and things that nature. So
- 12:09Speaker 1: it's going to be interesting. But I think I think
- 12:12Speaker 1: what they did in free agency with the defensive line
- 12:15Speaker 1: and making the commitment to the young linebackers is really
- 12:17Speaker 1: starting to pay off. I mean that the young linebacker corps,
- 12:20Speaker 1: of course, led by Logan Wilson Um he's six in
- 12:23Speaker 1: the NFL and tackles with thirty and you know, he's
- 12:26Speaker 1: got three interceptions as leaves all linebackers tied for the
- 12:29Speaker 1: lead in the National Football League overall playmaker. And I
- 12:33Speaker 1: think that combination of you know, getting these upper crusted
- 12:38Speaker 1: defensive linemen and free agency and supplementing it in the
- 12:41Speaker 1: draft for for depth. Uh, and then and then getting
- 12:44Speaker 1: those young linebackers in the draft and committing to them,
- 12:47Speaker 1: and um, you know, coach Al Golden has done a
- 12:50Speaker 1: hell of a job with that line linebacker group. He's
- 12:53Speaker 1: really brought them along big time. So yeah, I mean,
- 12:56Speaker 1: I think the defensive front seven is playing really well,
- 12:59Speaker 1: and with the injuries that they've got on the back
- 13:01Speaker 1: end for this football game, that front seven is going
- 13:03Speaker 1: to be big and uh. And then offensively, it's their responsibility.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I remember, you know, we talk about it. Guys. Look,
- 13:12Speaker 1: our defense is beaten up. You know, we got to
- 13:15Speaker 1: stay on the field. We got to control the clock,
- 13:18Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, the game. You know, they they've
- 13:21Speaker 1: played eighty seven snaps. We played forty two. Come on,
- 13:24Speaker 1: let's we gotta we gotta step up. It's time for
- 13:27Speaker 1: the offense to get something done. And the best offense
- 13:29Speaker 1: is a best defense is a real good offense is
- 13:32Speaker 1: keeping the defense off the field. So let's talk about
- 13:35Speaker 1: the offense currently middle of the pack and points scored
- 13:38Speaker 1: per game, partly because they played it safe with a
- 13:41Speaker 1: big lead in the second half last week. What's the
- 13:43Speaker 1: next step that you would like to see out of
- 13:45Speaker 1: this offense. I'd still like to see, you know, even
- 13:49Speaker 1: more consistency, and I think on both sides of the
- 13:53Speaker 1: football third down aggressiveness, you know, I think I think
- 13:57Speaker 1: that there can be they're leaving some things on the
- 13:59Speaker 1: table on third down. Defensively, the posture has been more
- 14:04Speaker 1: of soft zones, let him make a catch, rally up
- 14:07Speaker 1: on the football, you know, and you see guys catch
- 14:09Speaker 1: football on a third and seven, five or six yards
- 14:12Speaker 1: down the field and you have to make a perfect tackle,
- 14:14Speaker 1: you know, to stay out, you know, to get off
- 14:16Speaker 1: the football field. So it's going to be interesting to see.
- 14:21Speaker 1: With injuries in the in the secondary, it's going to
- 14:24Speaker 1: be interesting to see what Luna UMA's mindset is going
- 14:26Speaker 1: to be. Do I even play it more soft because
- 14:29Speaker 1: of these guys? Or am I more aggressive and make
- 14:32Speaker 1: the quarterback make quicker decisions to help you know, some
- 14:35Speaker 1: guys that haven't had as many snaps in the back
- 14:37Speaker 1: end as guys that have been back there. So it's
- 14:39Speaker 1: going to be interest to see which way the pendulum
- 14:42Speaker 1: swings a little bit. But again, a big help could
- 14:45Speaker 1: be offensively, sustain drives, stay on the field, you know,
- 14:50Speaker 1: make stay in third and four or less and be
- 14:52Speaker 1: aggressive when it's third and four or less and rack
- 14:57Speaker 1: up the plays, keep the defense off the field. Now
- 15:00Speaker 1: that you've seen some tape, how did Jackson Carmen do
- 15:03Speaker 1: in his first NFL start? Jackson Carmen belonged, I think,
- 15:07Speaker 1: is the best way to put it. And I remember
- 15:10Speaker 1: that's exactly what I was thinking going into my first
- 15:12Speaker 1: NFL game. I just want my teammates and coaches to think,
- 15:16Speaker 1: this guy he should be there. He belongs, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: and not be a fish in the offensive line where
- 15:25Speaker 1: you're getting taking advantage of him. People are picking on you,
- 15:27Speaker 1: and everybody can't wait to line up against you and
- 15:29Speaker 1: pass rush against your kind of thing. And now was
- 15:32Speaker 1: it perfect? Now? I mean, Jackson had a communication issue
- 15:35Speaker 1: that led to a sack in the early stages of
- 15:37Speaker 1: the game, and there were some other things that weren't,
- 15:40Speaker 1: you know, necessarily exactly the way you want him. But overall,
- 15:44Speaker 1: he definitely showed like he belonged. And you know, I
- 15:47Speaker 1: remember after my first NFL start, Paul Brown came up
- 15:51Speaker 1: to me in my locker and just shocked the heck
- 15:53Speaker 1: out of me when I looked up and it was
- 15:55Speaker 1: Paul Brown and he was a young man. I'm proud
- 15:58Speaker 1: of you. The game wasn't too big for you. That's good.
- 16:02Speaker 1: We thought that might be the case, and you proved
- 16:05Speaker 1: us right. So I was like, Wow, that was like
- 16:07Speaker 1: a million bucks. So I think he should feel like
- 16:10Speaker 1: the game wasn't too big for him. He belongs. He's
- 16:14Speaker 1: right where we should be playing in the National Football League.
- 16:17Speaker 1: He has all the physical abilities to do it, but
- 16:20Speaker 1: just button up all of his assignments. Button everything up mentally.
- 16:24Speaker 1: You know, no laps is mentally that lead to physical problems.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So here we go Thursday night football in Week four
- 16:31Speaker 1: of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They're owing three
- 16:34Speaker 1: this year. They've lost eighteen in a row since winning
- 16:36Speaker 1: their season opener last year over the Colts. You mentioned
- 16:39Speaker 1: the offensive line is good, They've got a good running game.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Where are they week? What are the weak spots for Jacksonville? Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I mean I think they don't really have a tight
- 16:49Speaker 1: end threat. You know that, and they're trying to solve it.
- 16:52Speaker 1: They traded for Arnold you know this week now with
- 16:55Speaker 1: two days how much of a package can they put together,
- 16:58Speaker 1: will even be active for the game? You know, it
- 17:00Speaker 1: makes you wonder a bunch of things there. But you know,
- 17:04Speaker 1: I think obviously the turnover issue is what's killing him.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I had a rookie quarterback that's got nine giveaways, seven
- 17:11Speaker 1: interceptions and lost two fumbles, and their minus eight in
- 17:14Speaker 1: the turnover department dead less than the National Football League
- 17:16Speaker 1: after three games. So it's it's kind of like the
- 17:20Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence Bakery is open and you can get three
- 17:22Speaker 1: for one every week. The turnovers. He's selling turnovers three
- 17:26Speaker 1: for one. But you know, you think I think at
- 17:29Speaker 1: some point they're going to simplify. You know, I talked
- 17:32Speaker 1: about this before. I remember doing college football Michael Bishop
- 17:36Speaker 1: when he's in Kansas State, and Bill Snyder said, you know, Dave,
- 17:39Speaker 1: I've got a guy that is going to be a
- 17:41Speaker 1: good quarterback, but right now he's an athlete more than
- 17:43Speaker 1: a quarterback. So I give him one read and I say, Michael,
- 17:47Speaker 1: if that's not there, tuck it and run. That's your
- 17:50Speaker 1: next best option. And then toward the end of the season,
- 17:53Speaker 1: the middle of the season, I should say I had
- 17:54Speaker 1: him again and I said, is there's still one reading?
- 17:57Speaker 1: Go for Michael goes. It's too David, you know, you
- 17:59Speaker 1: go one second, read, tuck it, and go. I don't
- 18:03Speaker 1: think you have to go to the backside of the
- 18:04Speaker 1: field the entire season. I wonder if they're going to
- 18:07Speaker 1: do something like that, you know, with Trevor Lawrence. And
- 18:10Speaker 1: I'm not saying that to make it elementary, but I'm
- 18:12Speaker 1: saying to take some of the some of the load
- 18:14Speaker 1: off of them and uh and and see what they do.
- 18:18Speaker 1: But uh yeah, I don't think they're really a real
- 18:21Speaker 1: good outside running team. Their strength of their running game
- 18:25Speaker 1: is between the tackles. They do a good job with
- 18:27Speaker 1: inside zone, not really outside zone or stretch inside zone duos.
- 18:32Speaker 1: They will run counter, they will run a draw, you know.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So I think their center and guards or solid, solid players,
- 18:42Speaker 1: you know. Defensively, a linebacker, I think is the is
- 18:46Speaker 1: the strength of their football team. I think the defensive line,
- 18:50Speaker 1: the offensive line just has to I think, impose their
- 18:52Speaker 1: will in this football game. With that defensive line, I
- 18:54Speaker 1: think it's good, but I don't think it's like upper crust,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you know, in the National Football League. So I think
- 19:01Speaker 1: the Bengals need to establish their ground game and be
- 19:04Speaker 1: more consistent, you know, established in that ground game. The
- 19:07Speaker 1: Bengals right now are one of only five teams. Let
- 19:11Speaker 1: me make sure that I get this right. I did
- 19:14Speaker 1: some homework on this, Dan, and I want to make
- 19:16Speaker 1: sure I get it right. The Bengals run the ball
- 19:19Speaker 1: five more times than they've thrown it. They're one of
- 19:22Speaker 1: four teams that have done that. Denver is even. They've
- 19:25Speaker 1: run the ball exactly the same as they've thrown it,
- 19:27Speaker 1: and they're three and ozer. So I put them in
- 19:29Speaker 1: that pack. So there's four teams more and then Denver's even.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Baltimore is plus ten, they're two and one. New Orleans
- 19:37Speaker 1: is plus thirty. They're two and one. Cleveland's plus twenty two.
- 19:41Speaker 1: They're two and one. The Bengals are plus five. They're
- 19:44Speaker 1: two and one. Three AFC North teams are of the
- 19:49Speaker 1: five that have at least even steven or run the
- 19:51Speaker 1: ball more. So I think stay in that identity. Don't
- 19:56Speaker 1: make Joe Burrow throw at thirty five forty times in
- 19:59Speaker 1: a game. Pound pound the football, you know, establish yourself
- 20:03Speaker 1: in that regard. Be physical. I thought their physicality in
- 20:06Speaker 1: the offensive and defensive line in their two wins was
- 20:10Speaker 1: superior and in their loss. It wasn't so how they
- 20:13Speaker 1: going to come out in this football game Thursday night?
- 20:16Speaker 1: I think it's going to be how did the big
- 20:18Speaker 1: boys up front? Are they going to be more physical?
- 20:22Speaker 1: Last thing? How big of an advantage is a Thursday
- 20:26Speaker 1: night home game, big short week and you have to
- 20:31Speaker 1: travel is very tough. Thursday night game is It's tough.
- 20:36Speaker 1: That to turnaround is very tough, particularly if you were
- 20:40Speaker 1: thirty or more. I remember, you know, but in my
- 20:44Speaker 1: twenties day, I wouldn't even bother me to have to
- 20:45Speaker 1: play a Thursday night game. I felt like I could
- 20:47Speaker 1: play Tuesday after a Sunday game when I was you know,
- 20:50Speaker 1: in early stages. You get up in the thirties door
- 20:53Speaker 1: it's like oil can and I need all the way
- 20:56Speaker 1: to that Saturday, start to feel real good physically, you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and then start with these Thursday night things. So and
- 21:03Speaker 1: then you have to travel to boot. If you're feeling
- 21:06Speaker 1: kind of funky, you're gonna get on a plane and
- 21:08Speaker 1: fly and get staff, you know, and off the plane.
- 21:10Speaker 1: And I just think that it's, uh, you know, it's
- 21:13Speaker 1: it's it's a much bigger advantage to sleep in your
- 21:16Speaker 1: own bed and not have to travel and all that
- 21:18Speaker 1: good stuff for that that Thursday night game. But I
- 21:22Speaker 1: do think that there are injuries that that the Bengals
- 21:25Speaker 1: and probably the Jaguars are experiencing. Then if we're a
- 21:28Speaker 1: Sunday game, wouldn't be as big an issue for a
- 21:30Speaker 1: Thursday night game. So that's that's the thing. I mean. Obviously,
- 21:35Speaker 1: the league is getting a ton more money and the
- 21:37Speaker 1: players are benefiting by that, But I know the players
- 21:39Speaker 1: Association has their problems with Thursday night football for those reasons.
- 21:43Speaker 1: You know, the player safety is their big thing, and
- 21:46Speaker 1: guys playing Sunday Thursday isn't a big player of safety plus.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It's a player safety minus. There's no doubt about it. Um.
- 21:55Speaker 1: But you know, it's it's the next game on the schedule,
- 21:59Speaker 1: and then you get the benefit of the mini bye
- 22:01Speaker 1: week the week after a longer week to rust and recover.
- 22:05Speaker 1: But it is definitely a challenge. But like you say, Dan,
- 22:09Speaker 1: I mean, traveling makes it exponentially more of a challenge
- 22:13Speaker 1: in my mind than having to play at home. I'll
- 22:16Speaker 1: have those Kleenex ready in the booth for halftime on Thursday.
- 22:19Speaker 1: I may need two boxes tonight's game. Whilaire nationally on
- 22:23Speaker 1: the NFL Network with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman on
- 22:26Speaker 1: the call. Kickoff is at eight twenty and two hours
- 22:30Speaker 1: and twenty minutes before that, Michael Irvin, Joe Thomas, and
- 22:33Speaker 1: Steve Smith Senior will be on the scene for the
- 22:36Speaker 1: NFL Game Day Kickoff Show, and I spoke to the
- 22:38Speaker 1: host of that show this week. NFL Game Day Kickoff
- 22:42Speaker 1: coverage on NFL Network starts at six o'clock on Thursday night,
- 22:45Speaker 1: and we are joined by the outstanding host of that show,
- 22:48Speaker 1: Colleen Wolf. Colleen, what are you looking forward to on Thursday?
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'm obviously really excited to see these young quarterbacks. Joe Burrow.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I love what he's been able to do with Jamar Chase.
- 22:59Speaker 1: The connection just really seems to have carried over from
- 23:03Speaker 1: college and we're seeing that now. The returns are very,
- 23:07Speaker 1: very promising early on here. And you know, it was
- 23:10Speaker 1: all and during draft season whether or not the Bengals
- 23:14Speaker 1: should get an offensive lineman, and oh my god, they
- 23:17Speaker 1: got a wide receiver and is that the right move?
- 23:19Speaker 1: And maybe that still isn't the case, but it seems
- 23:22Speaker 1: like everything is really working out in terms of the
- 23:25Speaker 1: passing game for Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase, and I
- 23:28Speaker 1: just I really love these three wide receivers that the
- 23:31Speaker 1: Bengals have there. I just think that they have so
- 23:33Speaker 1: much talent. Even though Tehiggins he didn't play last week,
- 23:36Speaker 1: but Tyler Boyd I love his SaaS. I love that
- 23:39Speaker 1: he came out and he was like, yeah, the Steelers
- 23:41Speaker 1: they just quit last week, like you could just see
- 23:44Speaker 1: on that final drive. And that to me is so
- 23:47Speaker 1: interesting because it just feels like the entire division there's
- 23:51Speaker 1: a little bit of a change happening. NFL Network Coast
- 23:54Speaker 1: katleean Wolf is our guests. So the Bengals are two
- 23:56Speaker 1: and one after that win in Pittsburgh, their first win
- 23:59Speaker 1: there in six years. Aside from Burrow to Chase and
- 24:02Speaker 1: the wide receivers, what else about the team has impressed you? Well?
- 24:05Speaker 1: I think this defense. For sure, their defense has really improved.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I think that they're playing really well. They're allowing only
- 24:12Speaker 1: eighteen points per game, four point five yards per play
- 24:16Speaker 1: this season. And just the fact that they were able
- 24:19Speaker 1: to stack Ben Roethlisberger four times seventeen quarter pressures. We
- 24:23Speaker 1: haven't quarterback pressures. We haven't seen a game like that
- 24:25Speaker 1: in years and I love what linebacker Logan Wilson is doing.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I think that he's done a really great job. He
- 24:33Speaker 1: was a star against the Steelers, picked off Ben twice,
- 24:36Speaker 1: led the team in tackles with fourteen, so he's really
- 24:39Speaker 1: been fantastic. Larry Ogunjobi, who they brought in in the
- 24:42Speaker 1: offseason the Bengals, he's really made a difference inside too,
- 24:46Speaker 1: two of those run stuffs, three total tackles. But I
- 24:49Speaker 1: think really that this defense has playmakers at all three levels.
- 24:53Speaker 1: When you take a look at Ogunjobi with Trey Trey
- 24:57Speaker 1: Hendrickson upfront, DJ Reader, he doesn't get enough love. He's
- 25:01Speaker 1: really good, and I just feel like he really flies
- 25:04Speaker 1: under the radar. And then like Wilson I just mentioned,
- 25:07Speaker 1: he leads the league right now in interceptions with three
- 25:10Speaker 1: and once Trey Wayans can get back. And I know
- 25:13Speaker 1: that that's a little bit of a sore subject for
- 25:16Speaker 1: a lot of Bengals fans. It seems like they've been
- 25:18Speaker 1: waiting forever what he's missed, like nineteen games, but three
- 25:23Speaker 1: games this season because of that hammy. I don't know
- 25:26Speaker 1: if because of the short week, if that will play
- 25:29Speaker 1: any type of role in his return, but once they
- 25:32Speaker 1: get him back, then they really will have solid players
- 25:35Speaker 1: at all three levels. So it's only three games in,
- 25:39Speaker 1: but the Bengals, Ravens, and Browns are tied for first
- 25:42Speaker 1: place in the AFC North. The Steelers are one and two.
- 25:45Speaker 1: What's your take on the division and how soon can
- 25:48Speaker 1: the Bengals compete. I think that this is a division
- 25:51Speaker 1: that really could change, especially once you bring in Joe
- 25:54Speaker 1: Burrow and you have all of these things working together.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Joe Mixon, he's been able to run the ball really well,
- 25:59Speaker 1: and I think he's to be able to get going
- 26:00Speaker 1: against this Jaguars defense too, because we saw the Texans
- 26:04Speaker 1: take advantage of them week one. I think that there
- 26:08Speaker 1: are still some growing paints that they need to work
- 26:11Speaker 1: out here, and I've been I've been impressed with what
- 26:15Speaker 1: I've seen so far. But I think Joe Burrow, he's
- 26:18Speaker 1: definitely he's had some growing paints here and there, but
- 26:22Speaker 1: he's played well this season. It's it's tough to shake
- 26:26Speaker 1: the Bears game with the three picks and the three passes.
- 26:30Speaker 1: That was just a rough stretch for Joe Burrow. But
- 26:33Speaker 1: I think he should have time in the pocket this week,
- 26:35Speaker 1: and I think that this early success, as long as
- 26:38Speaker 1: they can maybe start to build on this, if I
- 26:40Speaker 1: mean think about it, back to back wins. If they
- 26:42Speaker 1: can get the win over the Jags this week, that's
- 26:44Speaker 1: something for sure to hang your hat on. And the Browns,
- 26:48Speaker 1: they are so good at this point. It's a really
- 26:50Speaker 1: tough division with a lot of competition, but I think
- 26:52Speaker 1: that you can't count the Bengals out completely. We're talking
- 26:56Speaker 1: to Colleen Wolf. You can follow her on Twitter at
- 26:58Speaker 1: Colleen Wolf with an E on the end. Let's focus
- 27:01Speaker 1: in on the matchup on Thursday night. The Jags come
- 27:04Speaker 1: in oh and three. They've lost eighteen in a row,
- 27:06Speaker 1: but they've got Urban Meyer in Ohio. We know what
- 27:09Speaker 1: he's capable of as a coach. They've got Trevor Lawrence,
- 27:12Speaker 1: the number one pick in the draft. What are some
- 27:14Speaker 1: keys in your opinion on Thursday night? I think the
- 27:16Speaker 1: Jags will have a tough time running the ball for
- 27:19Speaker 1: sure because of this Bengals defense, as I kind of
- 27:21Speaker 1: just outlined, and that's really been the bright spot for
- 27:25Speaker 1: this Jaguars defenor offense. The fact that James Robinson and
- 27:29Speaker 1: Carlos Hide have have been really effective five point one
- 27:33Speaker 1: yards per carry six bess in the league, but Cincinnati's
- 27:37Speaker 1: run defense has really improved this year. I'm really looking
- 27:41Speaker 1: forward to seeing Trevor Lawrence because I think he's in
- 27:44Speaker 1: a really unique situation right now, considering he had so
- 27:47Speaker 1: much success early on in his career, basically at every
- 27:51Speaker 1: stop until he got to Jacksonville. So he's kind of
- 27:54Speaker 1: just now becoming acquainted with losing for the first time
- 27:58Speaker 1: in his career. And he's had a tough schedule in
- 28:00Speaker 1: terms of defenses that he's had to face. Even Week one,
- 28:03Speaker 1: Lovey Smith and the Texans were able to scheme up
- 28:06Speaker 1: pressure for him, and then the Broncos one of the
- 28:09Speaker 1: best in the league. But we saw what the Jaguars
- 28:12Speaker 1: were able to do last week with the Cardinals, and
- 28:14Speaker 1: they were up on them pretty well at one point
- 28:17Speaker 1: in that game. So there's been a lot of growing
- 28:19Speaker 1: pains for Trevor Lawrence. I think that the mistakes have
- 28:23Speaker 1: been glaring because the expectations have been so high with
- 28:26Speaker 1: him the Fleet the pick six on the flee flicker
- 28:29Speaker 1: last week late in the game, has two fumbles that
- 28:32Speaker 1: really shut the door on the entire comeback effort. But
- 28:36Speaker 1: now he's thrown seven interceptions and he's only completing fifty
- 28:39Speaker 1: four percent of his passes. And this week it really
- 28:41Speaker 1: does not get a lot better against this Bengals defense
- 28:45Speaker 1: that has done a really great job of creating pressure.
- 28:48Speaker 1: And I think when you have a rookie quarterback on
- 28:50Speaker 1: the other side that has made some mistakes, you can
- 28:52Speaker 1: force him into doing some more. Probably this week, we
- 28:55Speaker 1: are looking forward to at you and the NFL Game
- 28:57Speaker 1: Day kickoff crew will be here at Paul Brown Stadium
- 29:00Speaker 1: on Thursday night. Travel safe and thanks so much for
- 29:02Speaker 1: the time. All right, thank you so much. It's on
- 29:04Speaker 1: the Cincinnati last but not least, time to take a
- 29:08Speaker 1: closer look at a team that's just two losses away
- 29:12Speaker 1: from potentially becoming just the third team in NFL history
- 29:15Speaker 1: to lose twenty in a row. Gene Frenette is a
- 29:18Speaker 1: long time Jacksonville sports columnist, and he joined Lapping Me
- 29:22Speaker 1: this week on the Bengals Game Plan Show. Our first
- 29:25Speaker 1: topic number one overall draft pick Trevor Lawrence, who has
- 29:29Speaker 1: seven interceptions and two lost fumbles in his first three
- 29:33Speaker 1: NFL games. Obviously the last game he played. He played
- 29:38Speaker 1: much better in this last game against the Arizona Cardinals.
- 29:41Speaker 1: Than he did against Houston or Denver. But the fleet
- 29:44Speaker 1: flicker interception, picks six, that's skewed a lot of things,
- 29:50Speaker 1: But he was much more accurate, a little bit much
- 29:52Speaker 1: more on point. I would say that except for the
- 29:55Speaker 1: fleet flicker, which was the past which you got some
- 30:00Speaker 1: pressure up in the middle from JJ Watt, I should
- 30:03Speaker 1: have just thrown it into the stands right that it
- 30:06Speaker 1: was a horrible decision, and Ben Trevor would be the
- 30:08Speaker 1: first one to tell you that. But if you look
- 30:11Speaker 1: at the rest of the game, I mean, the Jaguars
- 30:14Speaker 1: were We're beating the Cardinals nineteen to ten. You know,
- 30:17Speaker 1: keep in mind, the Cardinals were more than a touchdown
- 30:20Speaker 1: favorite in this game, and a lot of people had
- 30:23Speaker 1: picked the Cardinals to cover in this game. And now
- 30:26Speaker 1: all of a sudden, they're down by nine in the
- 30:28Speaker 1: third quarter. And what happened was the defense gave up
- 30:32Speaker 1: a seventy five yard touchdown drive that got them within two.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And then on the very next series was when the
- 30:39Speaker 1: pick six happened. So it totally flipped the momentum of
- 30:41Speaker 1: the game. But up until that point, the Jaguars had
- 30:45Speaker 1: played a pretty solid game, particularly on defense. But you know,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but as we know, you know, the NFL is a
- 30:53Speaker 1: league where there's a lot of close games and they're
- 30:55Speaker 1: decided by two or three plays. You're there, and the
- 30:57Speaker 1: Jaguars have not been able to make those plays in
- 31:00Speaker 1: those game deciding moments. Interesting in that Robinson and Hide
- 31:06Speaker 1: have combined for fifty rushes for two hundred and fifty
- 31:10Speaker 1: five yards over five yards to carry. They've been pretty
- 31:13Speaker 1: efficient and effective, and Trevor Lawrence, they've thrown the football
- 31:20Speaker 1: fifty two more times than they've run it. Is it
- 31:22Speaker 1: just they fell behind so early in football games? I mean,
- 31:25Speaker 1: they seem to have a pretty good running attack and
- 31:28Speaker 1: an offensive line in the interior that can handle the
- 31:30Speaker 1: inside zone and duos and things of that nature. Is
- 31:34Speaker 1: it just because the circumstances of the game where you
- 31:36Speaker 1: have a rookie quarterback thrown at fifty more times than
- 31:39Speaker 1: they've then they've run it in the first three Some
- 31:42Speaker 1: of it is that there was a drive at the
- 31:46Speaker 1: end of the first half in Week two at which
- 31:48Speaker 1: they threw it eleven consecutive times, because you know, they
- 31:52Speaker 1: were in a two minute so that's a little bit understandable.
- 31:55Speaker 1: But overall, I would say, yes, there has been too
- 31:58Speaker 1: much of a reliance on the passing game. Some of
- 32:01Speaker 1: it is dictated by the score, some of it is
- 32:04Speaker 1: dictated by penalties early on in downs that you know,
- 32:08Speaker 1: put them away behind the chains. But overall, I would say, yes,
- 32:11Speaker 1: they are not. They needed to run the ball more,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and they did that finally in last week's game, and
- 32:18Speaker 1: that's what got them to lead. They had an eight
- 32:20Speaker 1: play seventy five yard drives in which in which they
- 32:27Speaker 1: never threw the ball. They went seventy five yards on
- 32:31Speaker 1: eight consecutive runs, and so you know, that was that
- 32:36Speaker 1: was kind of like the highlight of the game last
- 32:39Speaker 1: week for them. And then of course that was all
- 32:41Speaker 1: followed by what I had mentioned earlier, the Cardinals turning
- 32:44Speaker 1: around driving seventy five yards themselves and the six six
- 32:48Speaker 1: and but yeah, they It's rarely a recipe for a
- 32:52Speaker 1: winning formula when your quarterback is averaging, you know, forty
- 32:56Speaker 1: two throws, a rookie quarterback is averaging like the game, right,
- 33:01Speaker 1: which was the case more or less for Joe Burrow
- 33:03Speaker 1: last year. We're visiting with Jacksonville sports columnist Jane Frenette
- 33:07Speaker 1: JAG zero and three. They've dropped eighteen straight going back
- 33:11Speaker 1: to last year's season opener when they beat the Colts.
- 33:13Speaker 1: But it's the NFL. Every team's got players who are
- 33:16Speaker 1: great college players. Where is Jacksonville strong And how do
- 33:21Speaker 1: they potentially pose a threat to knock off the Bengals
- 33:24Speaker 1: on Thursday Night Football tomorrow? Well, I mean, for one thing,
- 33:29Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, the Bengals got all kinds of
- 33:33Speaker 1: injuries in their secondary, so I will be surprised if
- 33:35Speaker 1: the Jaguars don't try to exploit some of that with
- 33:40Speaker 1: Trevor and the receivers. I mean, Cincinnati's a nice team.
- 33:45Speaker 1: They're they're better than they have been, but you know,
- 33:48Speaker 1: they're not exactly a juggernaut. I mean, let's you know,
- 33:51Speaker 1: they beat what I felt was a very average to
- 33:55Speaker 1: below average Steeler team. While that's a great win for
- 33:58Speaker 1: Cincinnati because of the history of the Steelers, it's way
- 34:01Speaker 1: too early in the season right now to just kind
- 34:04Speaker 1: of really get a feel for how really good or
- 34:08Speaker 1: how really bad a team is. Yeah, we can make
- 34:10Speaker 1: those conclusions about the Jets, we can make some of
- 34:13Speaker 1: those conclusions about the LA Rams, But for the most part,
- 34:16Speaker 1: I would say seventy five percent of this league right now,
- 34:20Speaker 1: you don't have you know a one certainty about what
- 34:26Speaker 1: kind of team they're gonna be, whether they're going to
- 34:28Speaker 1: be a playoff team, whether they're going to be a
- 34:31Speaker 1: last place Also, Ran, I mean, it's just we're only
- 34:34Speaker 1: three weeks into a seventeen game season, and to be
- 34:37Speaker 1: quite honest with you, I like the Bengals Tomorrow night
- 34:41Speaker 1: for one reason, only one reason only, and that is
- 34:46Speaker 1: it's a short week and they're playing at home and
- 34:49Speaker 1: the Jaguars are not. And as we know, Thursday night
- 34:53Speaker 1: games for road teams have not been very kind over
- 34:57Speaker 1: the years, and the Jaguars are no exception to that.
- 35:00Speaker 1: They're they're in their history. They're two and eight in
- 35:02Speaker 1: prime time games that includes Sunday Night, Monday Night, and
- 35:05Speaker 1: Thursday Night. And but given with the jet with the
- 35:09Speaker 1: Bengal secondary looks like right now or could look like
- 35:13Speaker 1: Tomorrow night, uh, I give the Jaguars much more than
- 35:17Speaker 1: a puncher's chance of winning this game over fifty percent.
- 35:21Speaker 1: Probably not, but I would say I would certainly give
- 35:24Speaker 1: them a forty percent chance of winning this game. Do
- 35:27Speaker 1: you anticipate the uh? The coaches simplifying things for Trevor Lawrence,
- 35:34Speaker 1: do you do you anticipate, you know, it's it's a
- 35:38Speaker 1: deal where Daryl Bevill says, Okay, we're not gonna We're
- 35:43Speaker 1: not gonna burden you with a bunch of reads. You
- 35:46Speaker 1: can run the football, you can do their zone read,
- 35:48Speaker 1: you can do a lot of things even when you're
- 35:49Speaker 1: throwing the football, maybe a couple of options. And then
- 35:53Speaker 1: your third best option is to try to run the
- 35:56Speaker 1: football a little bit. Now, you know, I don't want
- 35:58Speaker 1: to get guys hurt, obviously, particularly at that position. But
- 36:01Speaker 1: do you think there'll be a simplification in the offense
- 36:04Speaker 1: and they'll use more of a quarterback design run package.
- 36:07Speaker 1: And then also if he breaks, you know, if he
- 36:10Speaker 1: if he can make the passwash, breakdown scramble and pick
- 36:14Speaker 1: up yards together. The guy is a very talented runner
- 36:16Speaker 1: as well, isn't he. Yeah, but they had about I
- 36:20Speaker 1: think they had four designed zone read runs last week. Okay,
- 36:24Speaker 1: there were other instances where he ran because it was
- 36:26Speaker 1: a scramble situation. But if I'm the Jaguars, I'm not
- 36:30Speaker 1: you know, I'm having zone reads as a very small
- 36:34Speaker 1: part of Trevor Lawrence's package because the last thing you
- 36:38Speaker 1: want to do is getting him hurt. That. You know,
- 36:42Speaker 1: you get him hurt and you can you can the
- 36:45Speaker 1: Jaguars can just kiss whatever. I hope they have to
- 36:48Speaker 1: be respectable this season. Goodbye you. You will feel the
- 36:53Speaker 1: energy drain out of that franchise. If Trevor Lawrence got hurt.
- 36:57Speaker 1: He needs the reps, he needs the experience, and that's
- 37:00Speaker 1: what this season should be about the Jaguars. Yet Trevor
- 37:03Speaker 1: Lawrence to the point where he's gonna be as good
- 37:07Speaker 1: as a lot of people projecting to be. I think
- 37:09Speaker 1: he's gonna be. I think he's going to be a
- 37:12Speaker 1: very good to great quarterback in this league for a
- 37:14Speaker 1: long time. But to get there, he's gonna have to
- 37:18Speaker 1: probably go through some growing things. You know, we might
- 37:21Speaker 1: be looking up at his statue a month from now
- 37:24Speaker 1: and seeing, you know, fifty seven, fifty eight percent completion percentage,
- 37:29Speaker 1: passer ratings in you know, seventy five, eighty three, maybe
- 37:35Speaker 1: maybe a ninety eight mixed in there every once in
- 37:37Speaker 1: a while. Because he's gonna he's gonna have a breakout
- 37:39Speaker 1: game somewhere. Uh. You know, I feel pretty pretty sure
- 37:42Speaker 1: about that, because there's just too many games in the NFL.
- 37:45Speaker 1: The question is how much pain are you going to
- 37:48Speaker 1: have to go through to get this franchise, you know,
- 37:52Speaker 1: back to where it's at least you know, being competitive
- 37:56Speaker 1: weekend and week out, because uh, you know, I I
- 38:00Speaker 1: do have to give you this one reminder. Not only
- 38:02Speaker 1: do the Jaguars have an eighteen game losing streak, they've
- 38:05Speaker 1: lost their last seven by double digits. So you know,
- 38:10Speaker 1: I'm sure you know some of them might be a
- 38:12Speaker 1: game where you know, somebody scorers in the last two
- 38:15Speaker 1: minutes to get it to double digits, but there hasn't
- 38:17Speaker 1: been really been too many of those, so the Jaguars
- 38:21Speaker 1: are gone. I've got to get to the point where
- 38:24Speaker 1: it's five minutes to go in the game and the
- 38:26Speaker 1: games a toss up. Either somebody's got to make a
- 38:28Speaker 1: drive to go win the game or somebody's gonna make
- 38:31Speaker 1: a stop to win the game. That's the point they've
- 38:34Speaker 1: got to get to. They're not there yet. Here's my
- 38:37Speaker 1: last question for Jackson Gold sports columnist Gene for Net.
- 38:40Speaker 1: In seven years at Ohio State, Urban Meyer never lost
- 38:43Speaker 1: more than two games. He's got three after three weeks
- 38:46Speaker 1: in the NFL. How is Urban coping? Well, I mean,
- 38:52Speaker 1: you know, if you're if you're asking me to interpret
- 38:55Speaker 1: body language, and you know, postgame press conference moments, his
- 39:01Speaker 1: go to his go to line is basically after a
- 39:06Speaker 1: loss or you know, midweek press conferences, go to the
- 39:09Speaker 1: line is the locker room is great. These guys are
- 39:12Speaker 1: supporting each other. That's the one thing that gives me
- 39:15Speaker 1: a lot of them. And you know, hope is how
- 39:17Speaker 1: is how much this team is together? You know, I mean,
- 39:22Speaker 1: there are only so many positive places you can go
- 39:24Speaker 1: to right when you're getting beat by double digits. Right, So, uh,
- 39:29Speaker 1: you know, you don't want to necessarily single out anybody,
- 39:33Speaker 1: right because if you lose a game by eleven points,
- 39:36Speaker 1: twenty points or whatever, you know that that's not really
- 39:39Speaker 1: a time to be singling anybody out. And everybody knows
- 39:43Speaker 1: that Trevor has been struggling. But I'm also I also
- 39:46Speaker 1: should point this out. He's made about five or six
- 39:49Speaker 1: throws in these first three weeks that a lot of
- 39:53Speaker 1: the NFL quarterbacks just can't make. He's had two touchdown
- 39:57Speaker 1: passes to DJ Chart that we're just exploisit. Uh. You know,
- 40:02Speaker 1: if you look at the last week's game film, the
- 40:05Speaker 1: twelve yard touchdown passed the DJ charka throwing the ball
- 40:08Speaker 1: way across the field was his third read on the play.
- 40:11Speaker 1: And you look at that and you go, oh, that's
- 40:13Speaker 1: why the Jaguars, that's why he's the number one pick.
- 40:15Speaker 1: That's why everybody's calling him a generational quarterback. So he
- 40:19Speaker 1: has those moments in him, but he also has the
- 40:22Speaker 1: flip size, you know, the mistakes. I mean seven of
- 40:25Speaker 1: his interceptions by Trevor's own the mission, you know, four
- 40:28Speaker 1: of them were just really bad decisions. But no, that's
- 40:32Speaker 1: that's life in the NFL. Peyton Manning twenty NFL record
- 40:36Speaker 1: twenty eight interceptions for a rookie when when he was
- 40:39Speaker 1: with the Indianapolis Colts Troy eight been going one in
- 40:42Speaker 1: fifteen his first year. You know, these are Hall of
- 40:45Speaker 1: fame guys, So long way to go before. This is
- 40:49Speaker 1: just the start of Trevor Lawrence's journey. I think he's
- 40:52Speaker 1: going to be really good. It's just a question of
- 40:54Speaker 1: how when is he actually going to get to that point?
- 40:58Speaker 1: Final question? Really shit, your carving, the time you have
- 41:01Speaker 1: for us special teams have been pretty special. I mean
- 41:05Speaker 1: there's there's no two ways about it. Cook is number
- 41:08Speaker 1: one in the NFL net punting third. I think in average.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's been dynamic. Then agnew one hundred
- 41:14Speaker 1: and nine field goal return that was missed tis an
- 41:18Speaker 1: NFL record never to be broken. You can't you can't
- 41:20Speaker 1: go one hundred and ten you'd be out of bounds
- 41:22Speaker 1: and one of three guys to do it. And he
- 41:25Speaker 1: took a kickoff back one hundred and two yards. So
- 41:28Speaker 1: how good have overall of special team has been? Has
- 41:31Speaker 1: he kept them in games? And their three phases offense, defense?
- 41:34Speaker 1: Special teams? How have they done well? Obviously the two
- 41:38Speaker 1: the two kick returns are are you know, really a huge?
- 41:43Speaker 1: The first one, unfortunately came with five minutes to go
- 41:46Speaker 1: in the game and a game that was you know,
- 41:49Speaker 1: pretty well already in hand, so that didn't really help
- 41:52Speaker 1: them all the all that much. But the kick returned
- 41:54Speaker 1: off the miss field goal last week on the last
- 41:57Speaker 1: play of the first half when there was no time
- 41:59Speaker 1: left of the clock, that was huge. Gave the Jaguars
- 42:02Speaker 1: a thirteen seven half time lead. Now here's the other
- 42:05Speaker 1: here's the flip side of that. Special Teams And you're right,
- 42:07Speaker 1: Logan Cook, I think is got a chance to be
- 42:12Speaker 1: a pro bowler this year with his I mean, he's
- 42:15Speaker 1: just got an incredible leg and a nice touch for
- 42:18Speaker 1: putting balls inside the ten yard line. But here's the
- 42:22Speaker 1: flip side of it. Josh Lambo, the most accurate kicker
- 42:25Speaker 1: in the NFL from twenty seventeen to two two twenty
- 42:30Speaker 1: over three in his first three games, miss back to
- 42:33Speaker 1: back extra points last week and is out for tomorrow
- 42:37Speaker 1: night's game for what the Jaguars have termed personal reasons.
- 42:40Speaker 1: So Matthew Wright, a kicker I've never heard of, is
- 42:45Speaker 1: going to be kicking for the Jaguars tomorrow night. And
- 42:48Speaker 1: and this, you know, it'll be interesting to see if
- 42:50Speaker 1: this goes along the line from last year when Josh
- 42:53Speaker 1: Lambeau had a hip issue and was out of the
- 42:57Speaker 1: lineup for about four straight games, came back and then
- 43:00Speaker 1: without the rest of the season. They tried four different
- 43:04Speaker 1: kickers to replace Lambeau, and uh and they just couldn't
- 43:08Speaker 1: they you know, they just couldn't really settle on one
- 43:11Speaker 1: that they really liked. So but very huge concern about
- 43:15Speaker 1: Josh Lambeau between the missing kicks that he doesn't normally
- 43:20Speaker 1: miss and now he's and now he's missing this game
- 43:24Speaker 1: for personal reasons. I mean that you know, it makes you,
- 43:27Speaker 1: it makes you wonder if his confidence is shot. Uh,
- 43:30Speaker 1: you know that's the pure speculations on my part. But
- 43:34Speaker 1: that is a flip side of the other two Special
- 43:37Speaker 1: Teams contributors in Logan Cook and Jamal Agnew. So it's
- 43:42Speaker 1: it runs hot or cold for the Jaguars, and Agnew
- 43:45Speaker 1: has not been really been given an opportunity to return
- 43:48Speaker 1: up punt yet. I think he had one return for
- 43:51Speaker 1: like one yard and that was it. So but you know,
- 43:54Speaker 1: we'll see. But uh, certainly, I mean you get listen.
- 43:57Speaker 1: I don't know how many NFL teams in history. I've
- 44:00Speaker 1: had back to back week of a kick return touchdown
- 44:03Speaker 1: and lost both games by double digits. Our thanks to
- 44:08Speaker 1: Jean for Neette And here's a quick reminder to join
