Speaker 1: Chapter nineteen. Narrative resumed by Jim Hawkins the garrison in
• 0:06
Speaker 1: the stockade. As soon as Ben Gunn saw the colors,
• 0:10
Speaker 1: he came to a halt, stopped me by the arm,
• 0:13
Speaker 1: and sat down. Now, says he, there's your friends, sure enough,
• 0:21
Speaker 1: Far more likely it's the mutineers. I answered that. He cried,
• 0:27
Speaker 1: why in a place like this, where nobody puts him
• 0:31
Speaker 1: but gentlemen of fortune? Silver would fly the jolly roger.
• 0:35
Speaker 1: You don't make no doubt of that. Nah, that's your friends.
• 0:41
Speaker 1: There's been blows too, and I reckon your friend has
• 0:44
Speaker 1: had the best of it. And here they are ashore
• 0:47
Speaker 1: in the old stockade, as has made years and years
• 0:50
Speaker 1: ago by Flint. Ah he was the man to have
• 0:54
Speaker 1: a headpiece, was flint barring rum. His match was never seen.
• 1:00
Speaker 1: He were afraid of none, not he only silver? Silver?
• 1:05
  Speaker 2: Was that?
• 1:05
Speaker 1: Genteel? Well said I that may be so, and so
• 1:11
Speaker 1: be it all the more reason that I should hurry
• 1:14
Speaker 1: on and join my friends. Nay, mate, returned Ben, not
• 1:20
Speaker 1: you you're a good boy, or I'm mistook, But you're only
• 1:25
Speaker 1: a boy all told? Now, Ben gun is fly rum
• 1:30
Speaker 1: wouldn't bring me there where you're going? Now rum wouldn't
• 1:35
Speaker 1: till I see your born gentleman and gets it on
• 1:38
Speaker 1: his word of honor. And you won't forget my words.
• 1:42
  Speaker 1: A precious sight, that's what you'll say, A precious sight.
• 1:47
Speaker 1: More confidence, and then nips him and he pinched me
• 1:51
Speaker 1: the third time with the same air of cleverness. And
• 1:55
Speaker 1: when ben Gunn is wanted, you know where to find him, Jim,
• 1:59
Speaker 1: just where you found him today. An him that comes
• 2:03
Speaker 1: is to have a white thing in his hand, and
• 2:06
Speaker 1: he's to come alone. Oh, and you'll say this, ben Gunn,
• 2:10
Speaker 1: says you, has reasons of his own. Well, said I,
• 2:16
Speaker 1: I believe, I understand you have something to propose, and
• 2:19
Speaker 1: you wish to see the squire or the doctor. And
• 2:22
Speaker 1: you're to be found where I found you. Is that all?
• 2:25
Speaker 1: And when says you? He added, why from about noon
• 2:30
Speaker 1: observation to about six bells? Good, says I. And now
• 2:36
Speaker 1: may I go. You won't forget he inquired, anxiously precious sight,
• 2:43
Speaker 1: and reasons of his own, says you. Reasons of his own.
• 2:47
Speaker 1: That's the main stay as between man and man. Well, then,
• 2:52
Speaker 1: still holding me, I reckon, you can go, Jim, and
• 2:56
Speaker 1: Jim if you was to see silver. You wouldn't go
• 3:01
Speaker 1: for a cell bend gun wild orses wouldn't draw it
• 3:05
Speaker 1: from you, Na, says you. And if them pirates came ashore, Jim,
• 3:10
Speaker 1: what would you say? But there'd be widders in the morning.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: Here he was interrupted by a loud report, and a
• 3:17
Speaker 1: cannon ball came tearing through the trees and pitched in
• 3:21
Speaker 1: in the sand, not a hundred yards from where we
• 3:23
Speaker 1: two were talking. The next moment, each of us had
• 3:26
Speaker 1: taken to our heels in a different direction. For a
• 3:30
Speaker 1: good hour to come, frequent reports shook the island, and
• 3:34
Speaker 1: balls kept crashing through the woods. I moved from hiding
• 3:37
Speaker 1: place to hiding place, always pursued, or so it seemed
• 3:41
Speaker 1: to me, by these terrifying missiles. But toward the end
• 3:46
Speaker 1: of the bombardment, though still I durst not venture in
• 3:49
Speaker 1: the direction of the stockade where the balls fell oftenest.
• 3:53
Speaker 1: I had begun in a manner to pluck up my
• 3:55
Speaker 1: heart again, and after a long detour in the east,
• 3:59
Speaker 1: crept down among the shore side trees. The sun had
• 4:03
Speaker 1: just set. The sea breeze was rustling and tumbling in
• 4:06
Speaker 1: the woods, and ruffling the gray surface of the anchorage,
• 4:10
Speaker 1: and tied too, was far out, and great tracks of
• 4:13
Speaker 1: sand lay uncovered the air. After the heat of the
• 4:17
Speaker 1: day chilled me through my jacket. The Hispaniola still lay
• 4:21
Speaker 1: where she had anchored, but sure enough there was the
• 4:24
Speaker 1: Jolly Roger, the black flag of piracy flying from her peak.
• 4:29
Speaker 1: Even as I looked, there came another red flash and
• 4:32
Speaker 1: another report that sent the echoes clattering, and one more
• 4:36
Speaker 1: round shot whistled through the air. It was the last
• 4:40
Speaker 1: of the cannonade. I lay for some time watching the
• 4:43
Speaker 1: bustle which succeeded The attack men were demolishing something with
• 4:48
Speaker 1: axes on the beach near the stockade, the poor jolly boat.
• 4:52
Speaker 1: I afterwards discovered anyway near the mouth of the river
• 4:56
Speaker 1: a great fire was glowing among the trees, and between
• 4:59
Speaker 1: that point and the ship, one of the gigs kept
• 5:01
Speaker 1: coming and going. The men whom I had seen so
• 5:05
Speaker 1: gloomy shouting at the oars like children, But there was
• 5:09
Speaker 1: a sound in their voices which suggested rum. At length,
• 5:13
Speaker 1: I thought I might return towards the stockade. I was
• 5:16
Speaker 1: pretty far down on the low sandy spit that encloses
• 5:20
Speaker 1: the anchorage to the east and is joined at half
• 5:22
Speaker 1: water to Skeleton Island. And now, as I rose to
• 5:25
Speaker 1: my feet, I saw some distance farther down the spit,
• 5:29
Speaker 1: and rising from among low bushes, an isolated rock, pretty
• 5:34
Speaker 1: high and particularly white in color. It occurred to me
• 5:38
Speaker 1: that this might be the white rock of which ben
• 5:41
Speaker 1: Gunn had spoken, and that some day or other a
• 5:43
Speaker 1: boat might be wanted, and I should know where to
• 5:46
Speaker 1: look for one. Then I skirted among the woods till
• 5:49
Speaker 1: I had regained the rear or shoreward side of the stockade,
• 5:53
Speaker 1: and was soon warmly welcomed by the faithful party. I
• 5:57
Speaker 1: had soon told my story and began to look about me.
• 6:01
Speaker 1: The log house was made of unsquared trunks of pine, roof,
• 6:05
Speaker 1: walls and floor. The latter stood in several places as
• 6:09
Speaker 1: much as a foot or a foot and a half
• 6:11
Speaker 1: above the surface of the sand. There was a porch
• 6:14
Speaker 1: at the door, and under this porch the little spring
• 6:18
Speaker 1: welled up into an artificial basin of a rather odd kind,
• 6:22
Speaker 1: no other than a great ship's kettle of iron, with
• 6:25
Speaker 1: the bottom knocked out and sunk to her bearings. As
• 6:29
Speaker 1: the captain said, among the sand, little had been left
• 6:33
Speaker 1: beside the framework of the house, but in one corner
• 6:36
Speaker 1: there was a stone slab laid down by way of
• 6:39
Speaker 1: a hearth and an old, rusty iron bucket to contain
• 6:43
Speaker 1: the fire. The slopes of the knoll and all the
• 6:46
Speaker 1: inside of the stockade had been cleared of timber to
• 6:49
Speaker 1: build the house, and we could see by the stumps
• 6:52
Speaker 1: what a fine and lofty grove had been destroyed. Most
• 6:56
Speaker 1: of the soil had been washed away or buried in
• 6:59
Speaker 1: drift after the removal of the trees. Only where the
• 7:03
Speaker 1: streamlet ran down from the kettle a thick bed of moss,
• 7:06
Speaker 1: and some ferns and little creeping bushes were still green
• 7:10
Speaker 1: among the sand, Very close around the stockade, too close
• 7:15
Speaker 1: for defense, they said. The wood still flourished high and dense,
• 7:20
Speaker 1: all of fur on the land side, but toward the sea,
• 7:24
Speaker 1: with a large admixture of live oaks. The cold evening
• 7:28
Speaker 1: breeze of which I have spoken whistled through every chink
• 7:32
Speaker 1: of the rude building, and sprinkled the floor with a
• 7:35
Speaker 1: continual rain of fine sand. There was sand in our eyes,
• 7:39
Speaker 1: sand in our teeth, sand in our suppers, sand dancing
• 7:43
Speaker 1: in the spring at the bottom of the kettle for
• 7:46
Speaker 1: all the world, like porridge beginning to boil. Our chimney
• 7:50
Speaker 1: was a square hole in the roof, but it was
• 7:52
Speaker 1: but a little part of the smoke that found its
• 7:55
Speaker 1: way out, and the rest edded about the house and
• 7:58
Speaker 1: kept us coughing and piping. The add to this that Gray,
• 8:02
Speaker 1: the new Man, had his face tied up in a
• 8:05
Speaker 1: bandage for a cut he had got in breaking away
• 8:08
Speaker 1: from the mutineers. And that poor old Tom Redruth, still unburied,
• 8:13
Speaker 1: lay along the wall, stiff and stark under the union jack.
• 8:17
Speaker 1: If we had been allowed to sit idle, we should
• 8:20
Speaker 1: all have fallen into the blues. But Captain Smollett was
• 8:24
Speaker 1: never the man for that. All hands were called up
• 8:27
Speaker 1: before him, and he divided us into watches, the Doctor
• 8:31
Speaker 1: and Gray, and I for one, the squire Hunter and
• 8:35
Speaker 1: Joyce upon the other. Tired as we were, two men
• 8:39
Speaker 1: were sent out for firewood. Two more were sent to
• 8:42
Speaker 1: dig a gray for Redruth. The doctor was named Cook.
• 8:46
Speaker 1: I was put sentry at the door, and the Captain
• 8:49
Speaker 1: himself went from one to another, keeping up our spirits
• 8:53
Speaker 1: and lending a hand wherever it was wanted. From time
• 8:56
Speaker 1: to time the doctor came to the door for a
• 8:58
Speaker 1: little air and to rest his eyes, which were almost
• 9:02
Speaker 1: smoked out of his head, and whenever he did so,
• 9:05
Speaker 1: he had a word for me. That man's Smollett, he
• 9:09
Speaker 1: said once, is a better man than I am. And
• 9:13
Speaker 1: when I say that, it means a great deal Jim.
• 9:17
Speaker 1: Another time he came and was silent for a while.
• 9:20
Speaker 1: Then he put his head on one side and looked
• 9:23
Speaker 1: at me. Is this Ben Gunn a man? He asked?
• 9:29
Speaker 1: I do not know, Sir, said I I am not
• 9:32
Speaker 1: very sure whether he's sane. If there's any doubt about
• 9:35
Speaker 1: the matter, he is returned the doctor, A man who
• 9:39
Speaker 1: has been three years biting his nails on a desert island.
• 9:43
Speaker 1: Jim can't expect to appear as sane as you or me.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: It doesn't lie in human nature. Was it cheese? You
• 9:51
Speaker 1: said he had a fancy for Yes, sir, cheese, I answered, well,
• 9:57
Speaker 1: Jim says he just you see the good that comes
• 10:01
Speaker 1: of being daty in your food. You've seen my snuff box,
• 10:05
Speaker 1: haven't you? And you never saw me take senough, the
• 10:08
Speaker 1: reason being that in my snuff box I carry a
• 10:11
Speaker 1: piece of Parmesan cheese, a cheese made in Italy, very nutritious.
• 10:18
Speaker 1: Well that's for Ben Gunn. Before supper was eaten, we
• 10:22
Speaker 1: buried old Tom in the sand and stood round him
• 10:25
Speaker 1: for a while, bare headed in the breeze. A good
• 10:28
Speaker 1: deal of firewood had been got in, but not enough
• 10:31
Speaker 1: for the captain's fancy, and he shook his head over
• 10:34
Speaker 1: it and told us we must get back to this tomorrow,
• 10:39
Speaker 1: rather livelier then. When we had eaten our pork and
• 10:43
Speaker 1: each had a good stiff glass of brandy grog, the
• 10:46
Speaker 1: three chiefs got together in a corner to discuss our prospects.
• 10:51
Speaker 1: It appears that they were at their wits end what
• 10:54
Speaker 1: to do, the stores being so low that we must
• 10:57
Speaker 1: have been starved into surrender long before help came. But
• 11:01
Speaker 1: our best hope, it was decided, was to kill off
• 11:04
Speaker 1: the buccaneers until they either hauled down their flag or
• 11:08
Speaker 1: ran away with the Hispaniola. From nineteen they were already
• 11:12
Speaker 1: reduced to fifteen. Two others were wounded, and one at
• 11:16
Speaker 1: least the man shot beside the gun severely wounded if
• 11:20
Speaker 1: he were not dead. Every time we had a crack
• 11:23
Speaker 1: at them, we were to take it, saving our own
• 11:25
Speaker 1: lives with the extremest care. And besides that, we had
• 11:29
Speaker 1: two able allies, Rum and the climate. As for the
• 11:34
Speaker 1: first though we were about half a mile away, we
• 11:38
Speaker 1: could hear them roaring and singing late into the night.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: And as for the second, the doctor staked his wig
• 11:45
Speaker 1: that camped where they were in the marsh, and unprovided
• 11:49
Speaker 1: with remedies, half of them would be on their backs
• 11:52
Speaker 1: before a week. So he added, if we are not
• 11:57
Speaker 1: all shot down first, there'll be glad to be packing
• 12:01
Speaker 1: in the schooner. It's always a ship, and they can
• 12:05
Speaker 1: get to buccaneering again. I suppose first ship that I
• 12:10
Speaker 1: ever lost, said Captain Smollett. I was dead tired, as
• 12:14
Speaker 1: you may fancy. And when I got to sleep, which
• 12:17
Speaker 1: was not after a great deal of tossing, I slept
• 12:20
Speaker 1: like a log of wood. The rest had long been
• 12:23
Speaker 1: up and had already breakfasted, and increased the pile of
• 12:27
Speaker 1: firewood by about half as much. Again, when I was
• 12:30
Speaker 1: awakened by a bustle and the sound of voices, Flag
• 12:34
Speaker 1: of truce, I heard someone say, and then immediately after,
• 12:38
Speaker 1: with a cry of surprise, Silver himself. And at that
• 12:42
Speaker 1: I jumped up, and, rubbing my eyes, ran to a
• 12:46
Speaker 1: loop hole in the wall. End of chapter nineteen, Chapter
• 12:52
Speaker 1: twenty Silver's embassy. Sure enough, there were two men just
• 12:58
Speaker 1: outside the stockade, them waving a white cloth, the other
• 13:02
Speaker 1: no lesser person than Silver himself, standing placidly by. It
• 13:08
Speaker 1: was still quite early, and the coldest morning that I
• 13:11
Speaker 1: think I was ever abroad. In a chill that pierced
• 13:15
Speaker 1: into the marrow, the sky was bright and cloudless overhead,
• 13:20
Speaker 1: and the tops of the trees shone rosily in the sun.
• 13:24
Speaker 1: Where Silver stood with his lieutenant, all was still in shadow,
• 13:28
Speaker 1: and they waded knee deep in a low white vapor
• 13:31
Speaker 1: that had crawled during the night out of the morass.
• 13:34
Speaker 1: The chill and the vapor, taken together, told a poor
• 13:38
Speaker 1: tale of the island. It was plainly a damp, feverish,
• 13:42
Speaker 1: unhealthy spot. Keep indoors, men, said the captain ten to one.
• 13:48
Speaker 1: This is a trick. Then he hailed the buccaneer who
• 13:53
Speaker 1: goes stand aw wee fire flag of truce, cried Silver.
• 14:01
Speaker 1: The captain was in the porch, keeping himself carefully out
• 14:04
Speaker 1: of the way of a treacherous shot. Should edny be intended,
• 14:08
Speaker 1: He turned and spoke to us. Doctor's watch on the lookout,
• 14:12
Speaker 1: Doctor Livesey, take the north side, if you please, Jim
• 14:17
Speaker 1: the east, gray west, the watch below. All hands to
• 14:21
Speaker 1: load muskets, lively men and care for. And then he
• 14:26
Speaker 1: turned to the mutineers, And what do you want with
• 14:29
Speaker 1: your flag of truce?
• 14:31
  Speaker 2: Sir?
• 14:31
Speaker 1: He cried? This time was the other man who replied,
• 14:36
Speaker 1: cap'n Silver, sir, to come on board and make terms,
• 14:39
Speaker 1: he shouted, Captain Silver. Don't know him? Who's he cried
• 14:45
Speaker 1: the captain, and we could hear him adding to himself,
• 14:49
Speaker 1: cap'n is it my heart? And here's promotion? Long John
• 14:55
Speaker 1: answered for himself, me, sir, these poor lads of chosen me,
• 15:00
Speaker 1: cap'noff your desertion, sir, laying a particular emphasis upon the
• 15:06
Speaker 1: word desertion. We're willing to submit if we can come
• 15:10
Speaker 1: to terms and make no bones about it. All I
• 15:14
Speaker 1: ask is your word, cap'n Smollett, to let me safe
• 15:18
Speaker 1: and sailed out of this ere stockade, and one minute
• 15:22
Speaker 1: to go get out a shot before a gun is fired,
• 15:26
Speaker 1: my man, said, Captain Smollett, I have not the slightest
• 15:30
Speaker 1: desire to talk to you. If you wish to talk
• 15:34
Speaker 1: to me, you can't come. That's all. If there's any treachery,
• 15:39
Speaker 1: it'll be on your side and the Lord help you.
• 15:43
Speaker 1: That's enough, cap'n shouted long John, cheerily a word from
• 15:49
Speaker 1: using enough, I know a gentleman, and you made later
• 15:52
Speaker 1: that we could see the man who carried the flag
• 15:55
Speaker 1: of truce attempting to hold Silver back. Nor was that
• 15:59
Speaker 1: wonderful sea, how cavalier had been the captain's answer. But
• 16:03
Speaker 1: Silver laughed at him aloud and slapped him on the back,
• 16:06
Speaker 1: as if the idea of alarm had been absurd. Then
• 16:10
Speaker 1: he advanced to the stockade, threw over his crutch, got
• 16:13
Speaker 1: a leg up, and with great vigor and skill, succeeded
• 16:17
Speaker 1: in surmounting the fence and dropping safely to the other side.
• 16:21
Speaker 1: I will confess that I was far too much taken
• 16:24
Speaker 1: up with what was going on to be of the
• 16:26
Speaker 1: slightest use as sentry. Indeed, I had already deserted my
• 16:30
Speaker 1: eastern loophole and crept up behind the captain, who had
• 16:34
Speaker 1: now seated himself on the threshold, with his elbows on
• 16:37
Speaker 1: his knees, his head in his hands, and his eyes
• 16:41
Speaker 1: fixed on the water as it bubbled out of the
• 16:43
Speaker 1: old iron cattle in the sand. He was whistling to himself,
• 16:47
Speaker 1: cumlasses and lads. Silver had terrible hard work at getting
• 16:52
Speaker 1: up the knoll. What with the steepness of the incline
• 16:56
Speaker 1: and the thick tree stumps and the soft sand and
• 17:00
Speaker 1: his crutch were as helpless as a ship in stays.
• 17:03
Speaker 1: But he stuck to it like a man in silence,
• 17:06
Speaker 1: and at last arrived before the captain, whom he saluted
• 17:10
Speaker 1: in the handsomest style. He was tricked out in his
• 17:14
Speaker 1: best an immense blue coat, thick with brass buttons, hung
• 17:18
Speaker 1: as low as to his knees, and a fine laced
• 17:21
Speaker 1: hat was set on the back of his head. Here
• 17:25
Speaker 1: you are, my man, said the captain, raising his head.
• 17:29
Speaker 1: You had better sit down. You wait, agora, let me inside.
• 17:35
Speaker 1: Capt'n complained Longjohn. It's a main cold morning to be sure, sir,
• 17:41
Speaker 1: to sit outside upon the sand, why silver, said the captain.
• 17:47
Speaker 1: If you had pleased to be an honest man, you
• 17:50
Speaker 1: might have been sitting in your galley. It's your own doing.
• 17:54
Speaker 1: You're either my ship's cook, and then you were treated
• 17:57
Speaker 1: handsome or cap'n over a common mutineer and pirate, and
• 18:03
Speaker 1: then you can go hang wow. Well, Copton returned the
• 18:09
Speaker 1: sea cook, sitting down as he was bidden on the sand.
• 18:12
Speaker 1: You're allowed to give me a hand up again. That's
• 18:15
Speaker 1: all a sweet pretty place you have of it.
• 18:18
Speaker 2: Here, Ah, there's Jim the top of the morning to you, Jim, doctor,
• 18:24
Speaker 2: here's my service. Why there you all are together like
• 18:29
Speaker 2: a happy family in a manner of speaking. If you
• 18:33
Speaker 2: have anything to say, my man better say it, said
• 18:37
  Speaker 2: the captain.
• 18:39
Speaker 1: Right, you are cut'n. Smollett replied, silver dooty is dooty
• 18:43
Speaker 1: to be sure. Well, now you look here, that was
• 18:48
Speaker 1: a good lay of yours last night. I don't deny
• 18:52
Speaker 1: it was a good lay. Some of you pretty handy
• 18:55
Speaker 1: with a handspike hand, And I'll not deny neither. But
• 18:59
Speaker 1: what some of my people were shook? Maybe all was shook.
• 19:04
Speaker 1: Maybe I was shook myself, and maybe that's why I'm
• 19:08
Speaker 1: here for terms. But you mark me, cap'n. It won't
• 19:13
Speaker 1: do twice by thunder. We'll have to do century go
• 19:17
Speaker 1: and ease off a point or so on the rum.
• 19:21
Speaker 1: Maybe you think we were all a sheep in the
• 19:24
  Speaker 1: wind's eye, But I'll tell you I was sober. I
• 19:29
Speaker 1: was only dog tired. And if i'd a woke a
• 19:32
Speaker 1: second sooner, i'd a caught you in the act. I
• 19:35
Speaker 1: would He wasn't dead when I got round to him.
• 19:38
  Speaker 2: Not he.
• 19:40
Speaker 1: Well, said Captain Smollett, as cool as can be. All
• 19:45
Speaker 1: that Silver said was a riddle to him, But you
• 19:48
Speaker 1: would never have guessed it from his tone. As for me,
• 19:52
Speaker 1: I began to have an inkling. Ben Gunn's last words
• 19:57
Speaker 1: came back to my mind. I began to pose that
• 20:00
Speaker 1: he had paid the buccaneers a visit while they all
• 20:03
Speaker 1: lay drunk together round their fire, and I reckoned up
• 20:07
Speaker 1: with glee that we had only fourteen enemies to deal with. Well,
• 20:13
Speaker 1: here it is, said Silver, We want that treasure and
• 20:18
Speaker 1: we'll have it. That's our point. You would just as
• 20:22
Speaker 1: soon save your lives, I reckon, and that's yours. You
• 20:27
Speaker 1: have a chat, haven't you. That's as may be, replied
• 20:32
Speaker 1: the captain. Ah, well you have it. I know that,
• 20:36
Speaker 1: returned long John. You needn't be so husky with a man.
• 20:41
Speaker 1: There ain't a particle of service in that, and you
• 20:43
Speaker 1: may lay to it. What I mean is we want
• 20:47
Speaker 1: your chat now. I never meant you know, ah myself,
• 20:54
Speaker 1: that won't do with me, my man, interrupted the captain.
• 20:58
Speaker 1: We know exactly what you meant to do, and we
• 21:02
Speaker 1: don't care for now. You see you can't do it,
• 21:06
Speaker 1: And The captain looked at him calmly and proceeded to
• 21:10
Speaker 1: fill a pipe. If abe Gray Silver broke out, I've
• 21:15
Speaker 1: asked there, cried mister Smollett. Gray told me nothing, and
• 21:20
Speaker 1: I asked him nothing. And what's more, I would see
• 21:25
Speaker 1: you and him and this whole eyeland blown clear out
• 21:28
Speaker 1: of the water into blazes first. So there's my mind
• 21:32
Speaker 1: for you, my man. On that this little whiff of
• 21:36
Speaker 1: temper seemed to cool Silver down. He had been growing
• 21:40
Speaker 1: nettled before, but now he pulled himself together like enough,
• 21:46
Speaker 1: said he, I would set no limits to what gentlemen
• 21:49
Speaker 1: might consider shipshape, or might not, as the case were.
• 21:53
Speaker 1: And seeing as hell you are about to take a pipe, capt'n,
• 21:57
Speaker 1: I'll make so free as to do likewise. And he
• 22:00
Speaker 1: filled a pipe and lighted it, And the two men
• 22:03
Speaker 1: sat silently smoking for quite a while, now looking each
• 22:07
Speaker 1: other in the face, now stopping their tobacco, now leaning
• 22:11
Speaker 1: forward to spit. It was as good as the play
• 22:14
Speaker 1: to see them no resumed silver here it is. You
• 22:21
Speaker 1: give us the chap to get the treasure boy and
• 22:24
Speaker 1: drop shooting purse seamen and stoven of their heads in
• 22:28
Speaker 1: boil asleep. You do that and we'll offer you a choice.
• 22:33
Speaker 1: Either you come abore and along of us once the
• 22:36
Speaker 1: treasure's shipped, and then i'll give you a afy davy
• 22:39
Speaker 1: upon my word at honor to clap you somewhere safe ashore.
• 22:44
Speaker 1: Or if that ain't to your fancy, some of my
• 22:47
Speaker 1: hands being rough and having old scores on account of hazing,
• 22:52
Speaker 1: then you can stay here. You can. We'll devoid stores
• 22:57
Speaker 1: with you. Man for man, give my effie davy as
• 23:01
Speaker 1: before to speak the first ship I sight and send
• 23:05
Speaker 1: a mere to pick you up. Now, yelone, that's talking
• 23:11
Speaker 1: answer you could look to get not you, And I hope,
• 23:16
Speaker 1: raising his voice, that all hands in this ear bluckhouse
• 23:21
Speaker 1: will overhaul my words. For what is spoke to one
• 23:24
Speaker 1: is spoke to all. Captain Smollett rose from his seat
• 23:29
Speaker 1: and knocked out the ashes of his pipe in the
• 23:31
Speaker 1: palm of his left hand. Is that all? He asked,
• 23:37
Speaker 1: every last word by thunder, answered John. Refuse that, and
• 23:42
Speaker 1: you've seen the last of me. But musket balls very good,
• 23:48
Speaker 1: said the captain. Now you'll hear me. If you'll come
• 23:53
Speaker 1: up one by one unarmed, I'll engage to clap you
• 23:57
Speaker 1: all in irons and to tear. Make you home to
• 24:00
Speaker 1: a fair trial in England if you won't. My name
• 24:06
Speaker 1: is Alexander Smollett. I've flown my Sovereign's colors, and I'll
• 24:11
Speaker 1: see you all to Davy Jones. You can't find the treasure.
• 24:16
Speaker 1: You can't sail the ship. There's not a man among
• 24:19
Speaker 1: you fit to sail the ship. You can't fight us.
• 24:22
Speaker 1: Gray there got away from five of you. Your ship's
• 24:26
Speaker 1: in irons, Master Silver, you're on a lee shore, and
• 24:30
Speaker 1: so you'll find. I stand here and tell you so.
• 24:35
Speaker 1: And they're the last good words you'll get from me.
• 24:38
Speaker 1: For in the name of Heaven, I'll put a bullet
• 24:41
Speaker 1: in your back where next I meet you. Tramp, my
• 24:45
Speaker 1: lad bundle out of this place. Please hand over hand
• 24:50
Speaker 1: and double quick. Silver's face was a picture. His eyes
• 24:56
Speaker 1: started in his head with wrath. He shook the fire
• 25:00
Speaker 1: out of his pipe. Give me a hand up, he cried,
• 25:04
Speaker 1: Not I returned the captain. Who'll give me a hand up?
• 25:09
Speaker 1: He roared, Not a man among us moved, growling the
• 25:14
Speaker 1: foulest imprecations. He crawled along the sand till he got
• 25:18
Speaker 1: hold of the porch and could hoist himself again upon
• 25:21
Speaker 1: his crutch. Then he spat into the spring. There he cried,
• 25:27
Speaker 1: that's what I think of ye, before the arizel Oh,
• 25:31
Speaker 1: stoving your old blockhouse like a rum puncheon. Laugh, boy thunder,
• 25:36
Speaker 1: laugh before an hour, iseult year. Laugh upon the other
• 25:40
Speaker 1: side them that die'll be the lucky ones. And with
• 25:45
Speaker 1: a dreadful oath, he stumbled off, plowed down the sand,
• 25:49
Speaker 1: and was helped across the stockade after four or five
• 25:52
Speaker 1: failures by the man with the flag of truce, and
• 25:56
Speaker 1: disappeared in an instant afterward among the trees. End of
