- 0:00There are some passages in Scripture,
- 0:03certain stories that just feel like home.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: These are stories in which we can find tremendous affinity and resonance.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Descriptions of happenings long ago that we find ourselves in.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: They are stories that proclaim that,
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: in fact,
- 0:31are all in this life together and that an us-them worldview is
- 0:39not the intention of
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: God.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Instead, a we worldview is more to God's liking and timeless design.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: We is such an ordinary word.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: We use it all the time.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I'm using it now.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I've used it all morning.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: We.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: But just stop to think for a moment and consider what we means.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: The word we is never used to refer to a single person.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: It requires at least two
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: It is by definition a relational world.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: You cannot say we and mean yourself.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: At least you shouldn't do that.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: But what if that is not just a grammatical feature of human language?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: What if it is actually a characteristic feature of God?
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: In Acts chapter 17,
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Paul arrives in Athens as a walker,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: as an observer,
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: as someone paying attention to his surrounding.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And Luke tells us that he walked through the city and studied its altars.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: I remember days just like that.
- 2:16As I walked ancient stone Greek and Roman roads and amongst
- 2:25ruins of temples and
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: homes and amphitheaters and aqueducts,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: feeling in awe
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Wondering what kind of people could not only have built things like this,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: but what it must have been like to be there,
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: for them to live there,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: what might have life looked like for them.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: But then I realized all I needed to do was just look to the right.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: and see all of the modern-day apartment buildings,
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: street-side businesses,
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: restaurants,
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: and cathedrals to know it was these kinds of people,
- 3:11the same kind of people that I was meeting every day as I lived
- 3:16in Sicily for
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: nearly ten years.
- 3:20I too had arrived as a walker a young missionary taking the
- 3:27news of Jesus to an
- 3:29ancient land and somewhere on that long attentive walk through
- 3:37a city full of gods
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: Paul found something that just stopped his search an inscription
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: on a stone altar to an unknown God.
- 3:55And he does not see it as evidence of Athens' failure so much
- 4:01as he sees it as a
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: door,
- 4:04as a place where longing and awareness have already been carved
- 4:10into stone.
- 4:12Someone had enough honesty to admit there is something that we
- 4:18are reaching for
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: that we have yet to been able to name.
- 4:24that is not a pagan condition that is not an ancient condition
- 4:32that is not a
- 4:33Mediterranean condition that is a human condition that is a
- 4:43valley condition
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Most of us,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: if we are honest,
- 4:49have felt or are feeling as if there's just something missing
- 4:55in our lives,
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: something that is worth our efforts,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: our creativity,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: and our devotion.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: We just can't seem to put a name to it yet.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: And Paul, he does not condemn that.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: He says, let me tell you about what you have been reaching for.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: This is the posture that I want to hold.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: The curious preacher.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: The attentive walker.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: The one who meets people where they are already reaching.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: It is a posture I actually needed to learn about.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: When I walked along those ancient streets in Sicily,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: I thought that I was bringing Jesus to the lost.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: I thought I was going overseas to be a witness for Jesus.
- 5:55It took me years to realize that God had been there and
- 6:00elsewhere else long ago.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: before I had gotten there.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I finally learned what Paul seemed to know in Athens.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: God is much bigger than me.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: God is the God of wheat.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: When Paul finally speaks to the Athenians,
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: he does not begin with center judgment,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: he begins with creation.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: The God who made our world does not live in temples made by human hands.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: This God is not a local deity,
- 6:35not divinity containable inside of any one tradition or
- 6:40building or group.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Acts 17,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: 27,
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: and 28 says this,
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Yet God is actually not far from each one of us,
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: for in him we live and move and have our being.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: This is not a casual statement.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: It is a cosmological claim.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Paul is not saying that
- 7:09that God is nearby,
- 7:11as in right around the corner if you know where to look.
- 7:16Nor is Paul proclaiming that he is bringing God to the
- 7:21Athenians in his purse.
- 7:25Instead,
- 7:25Paul is saying that your very existence is already inside of
- 7:32God's life.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: You are not reaching across a gap toward a distant God.
- 7:39You are already held,
- 7:42already encompassed,
- 7:43already embedded in the life of the one who made you.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Paul is noticing that God has already been there for quite a long time.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Long enough, it seems, to have been noticed.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Long enough, it seems, to have been etched into a stone.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Paul is being a witness of
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Instead of a witness for.
- 8:10Think about the last time something felt like more than it had
- 8:15appeared to be.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: A moment beauty just stopped you in your tracks.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: A conversation that reached somewhere unexpected.
- 8:27A sunset over the valley that made you feel just for a second
- 8:33the world was saying
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: something you could not translate.
- 8:38These are the moments when the membrane between your daily life
- 8:45and the life of God goes thin.
- 8:49That is what it feels like to live and move and have our being
- 8:56in something that is
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: larger than ourselves.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: That is what it means to be a witness of instead of a witness for.
- 9:08I've been mentioning Richard Rohr these days and continue to
- 9:11read his books,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: so I'm going to mention another one of his books this morning,
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: The Universal Christ.
- 9:17In that book,
- 9:17he says that the incarnation is not primarily a one-time event.
- 9:24It is the revelation that God has always been present to and
- 9:30with creation.
- 9:32the Christ who came to us in Jesus the word through whom all
- 9:38things were made John
- 9:401 the firstborn of all creation Colossians 1 did not begin in
- 9:47Bethlehem Jesus is
- 9:50simply the clearest most fully embodied expression of something
- 9:56that was always
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: cosmically true
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: God is not at war with creation.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: God is in it and thinks of it as good.
- 10:14The Christian tradition has long confessed that God is Trinity,
- 10:19Father,
- 10:20Son,
- 10:20and Holy Spirit.
- 10:22Three persons,
- 10:23one God,
- 10:23and I am not going to try to explain the Trinity to you today.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: One, I don't have time for that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: It's taken more than 2,000 years for other theologians to do that.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: But here is what the Trinity tells us, I think, this morning.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: At the center of the universe, there is relationship.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: There is no lonely God.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Instead,
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: there is from eternity something that functions like conversation,
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: like family,
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: like mutual love,
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: like self-giving.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: The God we worship is by nature a community, a we.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: And if we are made in God's image,
- 11:19If we live and move and have our being in this God,
- 11:24then we are made for the same thing.
- 11:29And everyone seems to know somewhere deep inside of themselves,
- 11:36even if they cannot name it.
- 11:39We hear it often,
- 11:40at least I do,
- 11:41there's just something missing in my life.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 11:47because we are made from the we of God and we are being drawn
- 11:55back into it.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Imagine Paul walking through our community,
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: through Weir's Cave,
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: through Harrisonburg,
- 12:07through all the places that we live and move and have our being
- 12:13as we live and work
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: in this community.
- 12:17Where would he see the inscriptions of God's presence
- 12:22proclaiming,
- 12:23hey,
- 12:25I'm here.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: I think he'd find them everywhere.
- 12:29In the farmers who get up before dawn oriented toward the land
- 12:35and the seasons.
- 12:37In the parents who sit in their children's bedrooms and find
- 12:43something that
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: functions like prayer rising up in them.
- 12:47in the neighbors who show up with casseroles after a loss
- 12:53because they just don't
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: know what else to do.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: These are not people who are far from or absent to the presence of God.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: They are already living and moving and having their being in God
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: And our job,
- 13:12it's not to inform them that God has now noticed them or that
- 13:20God is arriving with
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: us.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Our job is to point to what is already true.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: The love that holds everything together,
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: even when everything feels like it's falling apart,
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: is the thing we call
- 13:43And the best picture we have of what God looks like is a man
- 13:49from Galilee who loved
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: people recklessly,
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: ate with the wrong crowd,
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: died refusing to answer violence with violence,
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: and who the tomb could not hold.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: In Him we live and
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: And move And have our being All of us Together Already Amen
