- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunts rutt Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:09Speaker 1: your hosts, Casey Smith Tyler Jones. This is rut Fresh
- 0:13Speaker 1: Radio powered by Vortex Optics. I'm your host, Tyler Jones,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and this week we're hearing from many guys who say
- 0:19Speaker 1: the warm temperatures have affected RUT movement, but there's a
- 0:22Speaker 1: cold front on the horizon and it's given us hope.
- 0:36Speaker 1: This is a rut Fresh Radio podcast brought to you
- 0:39Speaker 1: by Vortex Optics. I'm your host, Tyler Jones, and I've
- 0:42Speaker 1: got in the passenger seat right here, hanging out the
- 0:45Speaker 1: passenger side. Oh, he's just hanging out right here with me.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We've been hunting this morning. It's worn. Look at all
- 0:54Speaker 1: these used broadheads on your dash. Yeah, you have a collection.
- 0:58Speaker 1: I've got a few man of to shoot. Well that one?
- 1:02Speaker 1: What did What did I hit with that one? Goodness?
- 1:04Speaker 1: I don't, oh, Dad, that that's We talked about that
- 1:08Speaker 1: one already on this podcast. South Dakota, yep, Um, there's
- 1:11Speaker 1: some with dirt or some that are blown up. I
- 1:15Speaker 1: did hit a very big buck on the hardest bone
- 1:17Speaker 1: in his body with that. We talked about it. Anyway,
- 1:20Speaker 1: We've got uh some pretty cool fellers on this podcast
- 1:23Speaker 1: this week. UM, so we're gonna be hearing from them
- 1:26Speaker 1: in a second about what to expect in the second
- 1:28Speaker 1: week of the rut. But as of right now, Casey,
- 1:31Speaker 1: we had a pretty good first week. Then we sure
- 1:33Speaker 1: enough did man and you know, honestly, UM, it wasn't
- 1:38Speaker 1: all that ruddy, but it was a good first week
- 1:40Speaker 1: in November. Uh. I suppose, um, you and I both
- 1:45Speaker 1: killed bucks. I suppose that happened really nasty, very exciting.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So we hunted Kansas the first week in November, um
- 1:56Speaker 1: and one week one one week in actually five days
- 2:00Speaker 1: in November. UM. But so let's just go ahead and
- 2:06Speaker 1: kind of set the stage here. We head up because
- 2:09Speaker 1: November is just like the month, right, It's the month
- 2:12Speaker 1: that we all like want to do this thing. So
- 2:15Speaker 1: November one, you probably need to be hunting. And even
- 2:17Speaker 1: though like I really think like the fourth is wind
- 2:20Speaker 1: like it's really like starting to do the thing, right,
- 2:23Speaker 1: But we get there for the first to hunt and
- 2:26Speaker 1: um kind of like making their plans, but we always
- 2:29Speaker 1: like kind of show up with like a forty eight
- 2:32Speaker 1: hour top mentality, like there's just the odds of you
- 2:35Speaker 1: shooting deer on the first night or just so low right, Yeah,
- 2:38Speaker 1: they sure are sure. I Um, I talked about this
- 2:41Speaker 1: in the post that I made. But Mr. December is
- 2:44Speaker 1: what my name is. Uh, that's what my dad calls me,
- 2:47Speaker 1: at least. And uh it's because I'm always like running
- 2:50Speaker 1: around chasing a deer um in late December usually or
- 2:54Speaker 1: in December, trying to find some you know, there's some
- 2:57Speaker 1: old eight year old with eight or less points that's
- 3:00Speaker 1: like nine years old, and I've got to find out,
- 3:03Speaker 1: you know, how to shoot this deer and what pattern
- 3:06Speaker 1: he's on late season, which I actually do like late
- 3:08Speaker 1: season a lot. I've had some pretty good success there. Um.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But yes, it's uh, it's pretty Um, it's a it's
- 3:16Speaker 1: a pretty odd thing to be trying to tag out
- 3:19Speaker 1: on the first afternoon, you know. But we get up
- 3:21Speaker 1: there and uh rolling to a stand and me and
- 3:26Speaker 1: Eric are just sitting there and it's sunny, kind of warm,
- 3:30Speaker 1: very windy, and I, um, I play a game. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: play Solitaire on my phone until I win. Okay, so
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's early, you know what I mean, Give me a
- 3:38Speaker 1: break here, overn first early in the day, playing Solitaire.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I finally win a game after a couple and then
- 3:44Speaker 1: that's why we call you people. That's it. That's it.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And then I go into uh. I go into my
- 3:49Speaker 1: Bible app and read Josea. Uh no, actually I finished
- 3:52Speaker 1: Daniel and then went into Josea and I'm like two
- 3:54Speaker 1: chapters in and Eric goes there's a buck. I was like, oh,
- 3:59Speaker 1: I guess I early, you know, and uh and and
- 4:02Speaker 1: I'm like I don't move and I'm like how far
- 4:04Speaker 1: he goes fifty? It's like he's not a shooter. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: I was like, okay, well, I just look up, you know.
- 4:08Speaker 1: As I look up and I see him, it's Wendy too,
- 4:11Speaker 1: so I wasn't too worried a back getting seen. Well,
- 4:14Speaker 1: he's like he's like maybe like a pope and young type.
- 4:19Speaker 1: He's pretty solid, you know, like you just called him
- 4:21Speaker 1: a not shooter real quick. But this is a place
- 4:23Speaker 1: that's pretty special, right, you're just average public land property.
- 4:26Speaker 1: This is a piece of permission that you've hunted for
- 4:29Speaker 1: a long time. Yeah, for sure. And so um, anyway,
- 4:32Speaker 1: we watch this buck comes down, makes a scrape, we
- 4:34Speaker 1: get video. That's cool, man, it's cool. You are gonna
- 4:36Speaker 1: be able to see us here in the the next few months.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I need to give all the details. I should folks
- 4:41Speaker 1: go check out the Element podcast. They definitely can check
- 4:44Speaker 1: out the Element podcast. But this deer comes down and
- 4:46Speaker 1: gives he makes a scrape and it's it's awesome, and
- 4:49Speaker 1: he goes in front of us and uh, basically gets
- 4:53Speaker 1: kind of weird and then things happen, but I can't
- 4:57Speaker 1: tell you how it happens. Exciting, Yeah, yeah, So anyway,
- 5:01Speaker 1: it was, it was a good night. I did end
- 5:04Speaker 1: up shooting a buck and um, you can check out
- 5:07Speaker 1: our your Instagram to see that buck. Um we posted
- 5:11Speaker 1: probably on the second or third or something like that.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And then uh, a few days later, a few days
- 5:17Speaker 1: go by, Uh, you're not feeling very well. You're very
- 5:22Speaker 1: very negative for you for a casey, it was mentally
- 5:25Speaker 1: defeated at one point in time because, uh, there's just
- 5:28Speaker 1: not a ton of public ground around our area that
- 5:31Speaker 1: we hunt, but there's a couple of good places and
- 5:32Speaker 1: when the winds bad, um for that, you're just like toast.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And I was feeling like that, and like the projected
- 5:39Speaker 1: forecast was that way for a few days. I was like,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I'm out, I have no way. And then we just
- 5:44Speaker 1: start working the phones calling landowners and Tyler just pulls
- 5:48Speaker 1: one out, man, and it's awesome, an awesome piece of
- 5:52Speaker 1: permission that we get. And we go truck scout this
- 5:55Speaker 1: thing in the buck truck, uh, driving around, decided to
- 5:58Speaker 1: hang a camera and then while we're out hanging the camera,
- 6:00Speaker 1: I get that tingle that you don't want down. You know,
- 6:05Speaker 1: it ain't a rut tingle. And from there on, like
- 6:08Speaker 1: I had the stomach virus for about uh ten hours
- 6:11Speaker 1: or so. Man, Yeah it was rough. Yeah I I
- 6:16Speaker 1: I'm glad you're feeling better, so we'll say that. But yeah,
- 6:19Speaker 1: then there's some pretty cool things that happened on that track.
- 6:23Speaker 1: The next morning, there's some really cool things that happened.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And we will just leave it at that. But you
- 6:29Speaker 1: can go check out some of our feed stuff to
- 6:31Speaker 1: to see maybe what's going on and if you want
- 6:33Speaker 1: the full store on that. But guys, it's happening right now.
- 6:37Speaker 1: It's time to be excited. Big bucks are hitting the
- 6:39Speaker 1: ground all over the country. Uh with people that Uh
- 6:42Speaker 1: people are good hunting, bad hunting don't matter, man, just
- 6:44Speaker 1: get out there and hunt, you know, if you feel
- 6:46Speaker 1: like you're a bad hunter. Hut right now because it's time, dude,
- 6:49Speaker 1: It's time to go right now. We're actually almost killed
- 6:51Speaker 1: a buck last night. You almost did. Yeah, you rattled
- 6:55Speaker 1: him in for me. Hey, the calling is working right now,
- 6:58Speaker 1: by the way. Uh, I think that if you're going
- 7:02Speaker 1: to bust out rattling antlers, if you're gonna bust out
- 7:04Speaker 1: grunt calls, right now is the time to do it. Absolutely,
- 7:08Speaker 1: love it, man, It's fun. Get in a place, maybe
- 7:10Speaker 1: you can see a little ways, you know, the way
- 7:13Speaker 1: I am. I really don't like to blind rattle all
- 7:16Speaker 1: that much. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but you
- 7:18Speaker 1: get surprised by dear and then you have to make
- 7:20Speaker 1: a quick decision if it's a shooter and all that
- 7:22Speaker 1: kind of stuff. But like, if you can get eyes
- 7:23Speaker 1: on a buck, this is a bill Winky thing, right.
- 7:25Speaker 1: If you can get eyes on a buck and call
- 7:27Speaker 1: to a buck, you see, your odds are really good
- 7:31Speaker 1: of that going well for you. And that's what we
- 7:33Speaker 1: did last night. We saw a buck, called to him
- 7:35Speaker 1: and brought him in close to you. You just didn't
- 7:38Speaker 1: get a good shot at him. It's kind of far.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So we had a public land hunter help us out,
- 7:43Speaker 1: didn't we help? It's interesting how it works. Yeah, we'll
- 7:48Speaker 1: talk about that on the podcast on our Element podcast
- 7:50Speaker 1: to just give you a little a little bigger story there.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But uh, yeah, this week, we've got some guys that
- 7:56Speaker 1: are gonna be talking about what to expect in the
- 7:57Speaker 1: next week, whether it's calling like Casey said, or uh
- 8:02Speaker 1: just playing, sitting in a funnel, pinch, whatever you wanna
- 8:04Speaker 1: call it. Um, this next week is gonna be a
- 8:08Speaker 1: great week, I think across the country everything is ready
- 8:10Speaker 1: to pop and the weather, I think is gonna make
- 8:13Speaker 1: that thing happen. So uh, this week on the podcast,
- 8:17Speaker 1: we've got our friend Brian Bostick, who helps us out
- 8:19Speaker 1: quite a bit here at the Element. Uh, he's got
- 8:22Speaker 1: a Texas report for us. Brian is a great, great shot.
- 8:25Speaker 1: He actually is a state champion archer in high school.
- 8:28Speaker 1: So you'll hear me poke fun at him, but just
- 8:30Speaker 1: know he's a he's an incredible shot. Uh, Sam, so
- 8:34Speaker 1: hold up in North Dakota, Tyler Freel in Kentucky. This
- 8:37Speaker 1: is one of his first times to harvest the deer,
- 8:39Speaker 1: which is pretty cool perspective he's got there. And then
- 8:42Speaker 1: we've got our old friend Jared Mills from Iowa, who
- 8:45Speaker 1: shoots the biggest, most jealous worthy deer every year. So
- 8:50Speaker 1: those are that's say we've got on the podcast this week.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Anything else we need to talk about here before we
- 8:54Speaker 1: get to him, I'd say we can talk about Mark,
- 8:57Speaker 1: but there's really no reason to say Mark actually having
- 9:00Speaker 1: a pretty good bucks. He did, man, he shot Hiven
- 9:04Speaker 1: a good deer. So everybody's uh, even even the lowliest
- 9:08Speaker 1: of hunters right now are killing them. And I'm gonna
- 9:10Speaker 1: let you all the side between three of us who
- 9:11Speaker 1: that is when he's not on here, because then we
- 9:17Speaker 1: can just poke the most fun, you know. But um,
- 9:20Speaker 1: I don't know if y'all know this or not, but
- 9:22Speaker 1: Mark's gonna come down in December and hunt with us
- 9:24Speaker 1: in Texas and we're gonna have a real good time.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So uh, y'all look forward to that and look forward
- 9:29Speaker 1: to this week because it's about to go down. Let's
- 9:30Speaker 1: get the reports from the guys all right on the phone. Now,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I've got Brian Bostick down in Texas. Hey, can you
- 9:37Speaker 1: explain to me the mentality behind purposefully missing a deer? Well, guys,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you have to build some spins to your story. Oh
- 9:45Speaker 1: my excuse, and I'm sticking to it. I like it.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It's unfortunate, but it did happen yesterday. Yeah. So okay,
- 9:53Speaker 1: so you must be seeing some movements. Can you tell
- 9:57Speaker 1: us about what's been going on in Texas as far
- 9:59Speaker 1: as movement there. I've been hunting primarily East Texas and
- 10:05Speaker 1: it is happening. Um. I think a couple of these
- 10:08Speaker 1: doughs are starting to come and heat and the bucks
- 10:10Speaker 1: are moving. Um. I have been seeing lots of bucks
- 10:13Speaker 1: chasing UM, lots of rud activity, scrapes. Um. It's it's
- 10:18Speaker 1: my favorite time of the year to be in the woods. Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So you're seeing some scrape action. Huh. Scrapes yep. Um.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Here in the last month, all of the oaks have
- 10:30Speaker 1: started dropping acrons. So it's kind of spread some of
- 10:32Speaker 1: these deer out. But if I can get in an
- 10:34Speaker 1: area that have some good scrapes and some good activity, um,
- 10:37Speaker 1: I've seen some really good bucks. Are you still are
- 10:40Speaker 1: you still seeing acrons? Um? Being an active food source
- 10:44Speaker 1: right now, They I think are primary food source right now. Um.
- 10:48Speaker 1: I have lots of baked polls out deer feeders going um,
- 10:52Speaker 1: and they are avoiding them. Um. But if I can
- 10:54Speaker 1: get in a good bottom with some oak trees that
- 10:56Speaker 1: are actively dropping um acrons there they are on them,
- 11:00Speaker 1: that's cool. So also the moon could possibly play a
- 11:03Speaker 1: factor right now. I know it's kind of coming up
- 11:05Speaker 1: on a full moon. Is that something you pay too
- 11:07Speaker 1: much of attention to? Um? I not as not as
- 11:11Speaker 1: much as some guys do. Not a mooner who like
- 11:13Speaker 1: hunter is No, I'm not, um, but you know it
- 11:18Speaker 1: does kee me in to kind of look at the
- 11:19Speaker 1: activity on my cameras a little more yea, and and
- 11:22Speaker 1: you can pattern something, dear. I have noticed here in
- 11:25Speaker 1: the last week that a lot of these deer is
- 11:28Speaker 1: to run also, but they're starting to move later in
- 11:30Speaker 1: the mornings too. Um, there's been some real good nine
- 11:33Speaker 1: to ten o'clock activity, So I think some of that
- 11:35Speaker 1: does have to do with the moon. Have you seen
- 11:37Speaker 1: any chasing or is it mostly just cruising in your opinion?
- 11:40Speaker 1: I am seeing some chasing, man, So I think you know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: some of these younger Bucks has kind of started playing around,
- 11:48Speaker 1: um with some does. But when you see three Bucks
- 11:51Speaker 1: on a dough, you know she's probably eat a couple
- 11:54Speaker 1: of times. That's exciting. So as we are looking at
- 11:58Speaker 1: you know, bucks in that full on chase mode and
- 12:01Speaker 1: dear kind of going everywhere. Do you tend to be
- 12:04Speaker 1: a guy who wants to stay in the same spot
- 12:06Speaker 1: day in and day out and play the probability of
- 12:08Speaker 1: a deer coming by? Are you doing hanging hunts and
- 12:10Speaker 1: hopping around trying to outsmart them? I think with these
- 12:14Speaker 1: acorns dropping, it has spread a lot of these deer out,
- 12:17Speaker 1: so I am having to move around a little more.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Plus some of these areas that I have been feeding
- 12:22Speaker 1: these doves, um for the last couple of months, I've
- 12:25Speaker 1: noticed that the doves stay in the area and there's
- 12:28Speaker 1: been a lot of new bucks moved in. So I'm
- 12:30Speaker 1: hunting some of those spots that I've been feeding for
- 12:33Speaker 1: the last couple of months that are keeping those doves around.
- 12:37Speaker 1: With three bucks in front of you, you still missed
- 12:42Speaker 1: it was it was one guys, you know, you know
- 12:47Speaker 1: the story. Um, my first dear to ever miss with
- 12:51Speaker 1: a bow, and it was at fifteen yards. Um. You know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: I've seen them dear misses at fifteen yards and I
- 12:57Speaker 1: always thought, how how can a guy miss a fifty yards?
- 13:00Speaker 1: And here I am, I'm radio in your hunts that's
- 13:03Speaker 1: how you know it was. You know, I think it
- 13:07Speaker 1: was a good thing. There's bigger bucks in the area. UM.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I would have liked to have gotten that buck. Um,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but my season is not over. So we only get
- 13:15Speaker 1: one buck here in these Texas. And you know if
- 13:17Speaker 1: I would hardst harvested that year then to put it
- 13:19Speaker 1: into my season here in Texas. So I say this
- 13:22Speaker 1: just because the first time I ever met Brian, it
- 13:26Speaker 1: was like I saw that he made a forty yard
- 13:28Speaker 1: hartshot on a frontal forty pound deer and he was
- 13:32Speaker 1: archery state champion. So I can say this stuff. You know,
- 13:35Speaker 1: if he was just kind of a whole hum archer,
- 13:36Speaker 1: I probably wouldn't be making so making it so hard
- 13:39Speaker 1: on him right now. But with with that said, man,
- 13:42Speaker 1: all the all the action you've seen, Uh, what does
- 13:45Speaker 1: it lead you to think is gonna be? You know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: where do you need to be next week? What do
- 13:49Speaker 1: you need to be hunting? What patterns? What what tactics
- 13:51Speaker 1: are you using? I think you guys need to be
- 13:55Speaker 1: in the woods. Um. I think here in the next
- 13:57Speaker 1: couple of weeks, it's gonna it's gonna be on fire. UM.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I think you're starting to see a couple of those
- 14:02Speaker 1: coming heat. But I think in the in the following weeks, um,
- 14:05Speaker 1: it is really gonna fire up. I think we have
- 14:08Speaker 1: a cold front coming through Friday, um, and this moon
- 14:11Speaker 1: should be diminishing a little bit, and I think the
- 14:13Speaker 1: hunting is gonna be really good. Got you. So, on
- 14:15Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, what would you rank
- 14:19Speaker 1: Buck movement as coming up next week? If you had
- 14:22Speaker 1: to guess, I would say currently of five next week
- 14:26Speaker 1: to a seven numbers, Yeah, those are good numbers, realistic.
- 14:30Speaker 1: It's gonna be really really good hunting. Awesome, dude. Well,
- 14:33Speaker 1: thanks for hopping on the phone with us, Brian and
- 14:35Speaker 1: uh we're talking you seen man? Of course, guys, you'll
- 14:38Speaker 1: be careful. Okay, Now on the phone, I've got Jared Mills.
- 14:42Speaker 1: He's a good buddy of ours. And Jared's up in Ioway.
- 14:45Speaker 1: Has been hunting a little bit lately, had some success
- 14:49Speaker 1: in October as well. Jared, what's been going on? Man,
- 14:53Speaker 1: Not much, guys. It's uh light light Fooch has definitely
- 14:56Speaker 1: flipped here in Iowa. It's been It was a little
- 14:58Speaker 1: bit of a rough go there right at the end
- 15:00Speaker 1: of October, and in the first couple of days in November,
- 15:03Speaker 1: mostly just weather related, warm and windy, and a couple
- 15:06Speaker 1: of days of rain. But I'd say to three days ago,
- 15:11Speaker 1: once that weather moved out of here, it's been uh,
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's been full bore. Lots of bucks sit in the ground.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I've been out the past couple of mornings actually just
- 15:20Speaker 1: to get get on this call. I just left from
- 15:23Speaker 1: uh taking pictures and helping the guy recover a really
- 15:26Speaker 1: good ten just a half hour ago. So that's cool.
- 15:29Speaker 1: It's definitely on here in iwall. That's good. What are
- 15:31Speaker 1: the temps like right now? Uh? Right now, we're I
- 15:35Speaker 1: think the highest fifty today, so, which is much better
- 15:39Speaker 1: than it has been. I think we're gonna maybe have
- 15:42Speaker 1: one little warm up here midweek, but then after that
- 15:45Speaker 1: it's gonna be much more seasonal. Um highs in the
- 15:49Speaker 1: forties and you can't can't get much better than that.
- 15:51Speaker 1: For do you feel like, you know today, well, this
- 15:56Speaker 1: week is the second week in November, essentially, do you
- 15:59Speaker 1: feel like that warm tempts affect the rut much that
- 16:03Speaker 1: time of year or is it just gonna be what
- 16:04Speaker 1: it is? I still think it is what it is.
- 16:08Speaker 1: I think I think part of it is the the
- 16:11Speaker 1: mental grind on our end. It's just not fun sweating
- 16:14Speaker 1: in the tree stand. You know, it almost wears on
- 16:17Speaker 1: us more than anything. But there are I think little
- 16:21Speaker 1: factors with with a guard for the rut that are affected. Um.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But in general, it's They're still gonna do their thing. Um.
- 16:29Speaker 1: It just maybe maybe subdued a little bit. But you know,
- 16:32Speaker 1: I really sometimes think it's harder than us, and it
- 16:34Speaker 1: is the deer so um. Another thing that people like
- 16:38Speaker 1: to talk about this time of year outside of weather
- 16:40Speaker 1: is the moon and uh hunting. This morning, walking in,
- 16:44Speaker 1: we had a really bright moon hanging in the sky still,
- 16:47Speaker 1: you know, up until we were in the tree. Uh,
- 16:50Speaker 1: and then you know it's not gonna rise this evening
- 16:53Speaker 1: until probably after sunset. How do you think that that
- 16:56Speaker 1: affects your movement? So I've never been a huge, um,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I don't want to say believer, but you know, I
- 17:05Speaker 1: definitely know the moon effects movement, but I've never really
- 17:08Speaker 1: based hunts off of it. The only thing that I've
- 17:12Speaker 1: seen from personal experience is that when we are in
- 17:15Speaker 1: and around a full moon, UM, I see better like
- 17:21Speaker 1: in the two movement, like midday type of movement. For
- 17:25Speaker 1: whatever reason, Um, there's probably multiple factors, especially with that too,
- 17:29Speaker 1: but in general, I don't I don't change you know,
- 17:33Speaker 1: when I hunt or where I hunt or anything like
- 17:35Speaker 1: that based on the actual moon phase. That's just a
- 17:38Speaker 1: little observation that I've had over the years is that,
- 17:41Speaker 1: you know, when the moon's shining bright all night long,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I try to stay in the stand a little bit
- 17:45Speaker 1: longer to get in earlier in the after me. Yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: that makes a lot of sense to meet too. Man,
- 17:50Speaker 1: It's kind of my plan as well. So you mentioned
- 17:53Speaker 1: it earlier. But we're gonna get that cold front that
- 17:56Speaker 1: everybody's looking forward to at the end of this week.
- 17:58Speaker 1: How are you going to spend that best day? What's
- 18:01Speaker 1: the tactic to go to? You know, it's just uh,
- 18:05Speaker 1: not much different than any other. But I want to
- 18:08Speaker 1: be in and around betting areas or travel corridors close
- 18:11Speaker 1: to betting areas. Uh. The other thing, when we start
- 18:14Speaker 1: to get towards the second week of November and you're
- 18:19Speaker 1: you're having more and more, does coming to astris which
- 18:21Speaker 1: means potentially a little bit less you know, searching required
- 18:25Speaker 1: for some of the bucks. Don't overlook some of the
- 18:28Speaker 1: small stuff, like small fingers small wood lots. And the
- 18:32Speaker 1: reason for that is a lot of times when these
- 18:34Speaker 1: big mature bucks are paired with the dough those are there,
- 18:37Speaker 1: is they're gonna be Um, they don't very rarely are
- 18:40Speaker 1: they gonna just be betted in the main what are
- 18:43Speaker 1: the main betting areas throughout the rest of the season.
- 18:46Speaker 1: They don't like being near all those other gears. So
- 18:49Speaker 1: you know, I don't have access to a ton of
- 18:51Speaker 1: spots like that, um a few, but over and over
- 18:54Speaker 1: and over again, I see some of the biggest, most
- 18:56Speaker 1: mature gears in the neighborhoods get killed in the small
- 19:00Speaker 1: with little pockets. Um. So this, especially during peak breeding,
- 19:04Speaker 1: this is a good time to not overlook those spots.
- 19:07Speaker 1: Got you, So do you do you normally associate those
- 19:11Speaker 1: little spots with like being adjacent to you know, good
- 19:16Speaker 1: spots they have big cover and stuff like that, or
- 19:18Speaker 1: could it literally be out in the middle of miles
- 19:20Speaker 1: of just crop cut crop that could very well be
- 19:24Speaker 1: in the middle of nowhere. They just they just don't
- 19:26Speaker 1: want to be harassed by other bucks, and um, they
- 19:29Speaker 1: want to be by themselves. And you'll just I mean
- 19:31Speaker 1: even you'll sit here and I you'll see it just
- 19:34Speaker 1: driving around, you'll just drive by a little fence trove
- 19:36Speaker 1: when you'll see embedded up against the fence of the
- 19:39Speaker 1: spot that you'd never ever seen any other time of
- 19:41Speaker 1: the year except right now. They're out in the spot
- 19:45Speaker 1: like that, just to get away from the other gear. Yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 1: that's exciting for the guy who doesn't have any good permission.
- 19:50Speaker 1: So um, with that in mind, you know, going forward
- 19:53Speaker 1: this week, on a scale of one to ten, what
- 19:56Speaker 1: would you rank your predicted buck movement? Who I think
- 20:03Speaker 1: it's gonna be up there? I'll go I'll go eight
- 20:06Speaker 1: and a half. Yeah, good, dude, dead gumming? Are you
- 20:09Speaker 1: point five? Good grade? Sir? That's better in my college
- 20:13Speaker 1: g p A for Well, that's awesome. Awesome dude. Well,
- 20:20Speaker 1: thank you Jared for hopping on the phone, and we
- 20:22Speaker 1: will talk to you some other time. Man. Yeah, get
- 20:25Speaker 1: here from you guys. Good luck. I've got Sam Sohol
- 20:41Speaker 1: here on the phone. Sam. You've been up in North Dakota.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Uh yeah, it seems like, um things have been slow,
- 20:48Speaker 1: is that right? Yeah? Things have been super slow. Um.
- 20:51Speaker 1: You know, typically one of the weeks I look forward
- 20:53Speaker 1: to the most is that last five six days of
- 20:55Speaker 1: October and uh between between weather and us you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: who knows what. It seemed seemed very slow up, you know,
- 21:03Speaker 1: for a long time there. Yeah, yeah, So what are
- 21:08Speaker 1: you normally hunting in late October? You hunt scrapes and
- 21:10Speaker 1: stuff like that, or what are you looking at? Hunting
- 21:12Speaker 1: scrapes and reb lines? Also hunting transition zones between food
- 21:15Speaker 1: and and betting. Um, you know a lot of time
- 21:18Speaker 1: I'm hunting small chunks of public and stuff, so I
- 21:20Speaker 1: don't have I can't you know, get on a big
- 21:24Speaker 1: food plot or or anything um that time of year.
- 21:27Speaker 1: So I'm trying to find stuff where I think do
- 21:29Speaker 1: you at least moved through on the way to going
- 21:32Speaker 1: where they're going, but haven't caught up with one yet? Yeah.
- 21:35Speaker 1: Can you talk real quick about what what you're looking
- 21:37Speaker 1: for in a rub line that makes you want to
- 21:39Speaker 1: hunt it? Yeah? So typically I'm trying to figure out
- 21:42Speaker 1: what side of the tree that rubs are on so
- 21:44Speaker 1: I can get a get an idea of what direction
- 21:46Speaker 1: that deer is moving through. Um, and if it seems
- 21:49Speaker 1: like you know, it's going to be a better morning
- 21:50Speaker 1: sit or an evening sit depending on the direction, I'm
- 21:53Speaker 1: going to focus on that rub line. Uh, you know,
- 21:56Speaker 1: based on what I find from that information. Yeah, obviously, yeah,
- 22:01Speaker 1: obviously looking for you know, just at the freshest sign possible. Yeah.
- 22:05Speaker 1: So in North Dakota, it's one of the states that's
- 22:07Speaker 1: really been impacted by drought, at least looking on the
- 22:10Speaker 1: uh the drought map. Um, how does that really affect
- 22:12Speaker 1: like that early November time period for a year you
- 22:15Speaker 1: thinking about water? Are you're thinking about you know, just
- 22:18Speaker 1: concentration a dyear around it or what do you do there?
- 22:21Speaker 1: You know, you gotta think about water a little bit. Um,
- 22:24Speaker 1: it's been it has been dry, for sure, But like
- 22:26Speaker 1: you know, I've bounced all over um eastern side of
- 22:29Speaker 1: North Dakota this year, and uh that being kind of
- 22:33Speaker 1: the prairie pothole region, you're typically not that far from
- 22:36Speaker 1: a water source of some kind. It's not until you're
- 22:39Speaker 1: getting out more you know, central and western North Dakota
- 22:41Speaker 1: where you're probably gonna want to focus a little bit
- 22:43Speaker 1: more on water with it being as dry as it's been. Um.
- 22:46Speaker 1: But but over all the places I've been hunting, the
- 22:48Speaker 1: water sources not typically an issue. Well, we have a
- 22:53Speaker 1: big cold front looming right now this week is not
- 22:55Speaker 1: going to be a drastic change kind of across the country,
- 22:58Speaker 1: you know, where we have kind of some temps in
- 23:01Speaker 1: the earlier part of the week and then you know,
- 23:03Speaker 1: actually kind of you know, right there Thursday Friday, on
- 23:06Speaker 1: some really good dates, we start looking at some cold fronts.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Do you lay off of your prime spots for those
- 23:13Speaker 1: like just perfect days that we're looking forward to? Do
- 23:15Speaker 1: you go in that go ahead and go hunt those
- 23:17Speaker 1: things hard? I? Yeah, I typically hold off until I
- 23:20Speaker 1: you know, but I play the wind a lot, and uh,
- 23:24Speaker 1: you know, I have a few spots where I know,
- 23:26Speaker 1: like I can't really hunt here until the date is
- 23:28Speaker 1: right and the wind is right. You know, there's there's
- 23:30Speaker 1: a set of dates in a in a in a whatever,
- 23:33Speaker 1: a very slim segment of wind that I can hunt.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So I'm typically I'm gonna hold off and I'll hunt
- 23:38Speaker 1: other stuff until I know it's gonna be good. Do
- 23:41Speaker 1: you regard the moon much this time of year? I
- 23:44Speaker 1: can't say that I pay much attention to the moon.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I figure it's it's the rut and I should be
- 23:49Speaker 1: in the woods. I like it. Man, what's the best date?
- 23:53Speaker 1: What's like when you're talking about the best date coming up.
- 23:55Speaker 1: What's it gonna be? You know the historically, you know,
- 23:59Speaker 1: you hear a lot of people say at a seven, UM,
- 24:01Speaker 1: I'm typically like just slightly later than that. I'm a
- 24:04Speaker 1: big fan of that, like tent through the twelfth time frame.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, but that's uh, that's just me cool. So
- 24:13Speaker 1: UM in the in that kind of kind of tent
- 24:16Speaker 1: through the twelfth date range. So you know, next week
- 24:19Speaker 1: or coming up in the next weekend or so, what
- 24:22Speaker 1: are you going to be focusing on tactically or or
- 24:25Speaker 1: you know, with the habitat or what are you looking
- 24:27Speaker 1: at to try to kill a buck? Yep, I'm focusing
- 24:30Speaker 1: on stuff that I know has does UM. You know,
- 24:33Speaker 1: obviously there's gonna be a few bucks lockdown on stuff
- 24:36Speaker 1: that time of year. But a lot of times, if
- 24:37Speaker 1: you can get into a dough group or get into
- 24:39Speaker 1: a spot where you know does transition through a lot
- 24:42Speaker 1: of times you can find yourself in a rut ball
- 24:44Speaker 1: and you know, even if it starts out where you've
- 24:46Speaker 1: got young bucks that are doing a lot of the
- 24:49Speaker 1: chasing or you know, pushing them around, just all that activity.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Typically I have found typically draws bigger bucks in UM
- 24:55Speaker 1: and they start to push those smaller bucks off, especially
- 24:57Speaker 1: mid day if you can, if you can talk yourself
- 24:59Speaker 1: into staying out longer, you know, um, a lot of
- 25:02Speaker 1: times that time of year. Um, I might hunt way
- 25:06Speaker 1: longer in the day and then you know, with that
- 25:09Speaker 1: chance of killing something mid day early afternoon, um, and
- 25:12Speaker 1: then I might go scout that evening instead of instead
- 25:16Speaker 1: of just continuing to sit so I can find another
- 25:18Speaker 1: ball of doze that I can go hunt the next day.
- 25:20Speaker 1: That's a bold move, Cotton. Hope it pays out for you,
- 25:22Speaker 1: So pass. That's cool, man. I would like to you
- 25:27Speaker 1: to midday buck one of these days. I haven't done
- 25:30Speaker 1: it from a tree, you know, on the ground. It's
- 25:31Speaker 1: a little different game where you're moving around find them
- 25:33Speaker 1: and stuff. But um, so as we look forward to, uh,
- 25:37Speaker 1: you know, some really good dates like you're talking about there.
- 25:40Speaker 1: If you had to give it a number between one
- 25:42Speaker 1: and tiena, what you predict the buck movement to be
- 25:44Speaker 1: lock in the upcoming week? What would you give it?
- 25:47Speaker 1: With the dates and the weather we're gonna have. I think,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I mean, I think we're gonna be you know, running
- 25:52Speaker 1: that red line pretty hard. Eight nine, um, going into
- 25:56Speaker 1: late into the week. Early in the next week, especially
- 25:58Speaker 1: with just the attempts are going to go from you
- 26:01Speaker 1: know what have been in the you know, fifties, sixties,
- 26:04Speaker 1: and seventies, um, all the way up until a couple
- 26:06Speaker 1: of days ago, dropping all the way down to lows
- 26:09Speaker 1: in the single digits. So it is a is a
- 26:11Speaker 1: very drastic change coming man, single digits. So it's not
- 26:16Speaker 1: my favorite. But I saw a couple of nights in
- 26:19Speaker 1: the forecast where the low is gonna be three's greeks. Yeah,
- 26:23Speaker 1: I've been there before, but it's not the it's not
- 26:24Speaker 1: the most fun hunting I've ever done. But oh no,
- 26:27Speaker 1: it's terrible. Ye Hey, but I appreciate you hopping on, Sam,
- 26:30Speaker 1: Thanks for everything. And uh, I'm hoping that you get
- 26:34Speaker 1: get the shot at a buck on the tenth or
- 26:36Speaker 1: twelfth there somewhere in your favorite day range and with
- 26:38Speaker 1: any luck, it's coming. Cool dude, what are you talking
- 26:41Speaker 1: to me saying? Man? All right, thanks guys on the phone.
- 26:45Speaker 1: We have got the tundra master Tyler Freel what's happening, man, Oh,
- 26:51Speaker 1: not too much. Just got got back from my first
- 26:53Speaker 1: my first fall white tail white tail bow hunt. So
- 26:57Speaker 1: that that's that's always fun. Yeah, that's exciting man. You
- 27:00Speaker 1: Actually we're in Kentucky. We know as you as the
- 27:02Speaker 1: guy who knows everything that we want to know about Alaska.
- 27:05Speaker 1: But you've been down here in the lower forty eight
- 27:07Speaker 1: doing some whitetail hunt. And how is the action? It
- 27:10Speaker 1: was slow? It was hot and slow. Um, the deer
- 27:14Speaker 1: just you know there there's tons of sign and in
- 27:17Speaker 1: some sign that you know rud activity, but not they
- 27:20Speaker 1: just were not moving during the day too much. Yeah,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I got you so, uh for that first week in November.
- 27:26Speaker 1: What were you kind of concentrating on as far as
- 27:28Speaker 1: you know your tactic there? Well, we were. I was.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I hunted two different spots, um, kind of inside corner
- 27:36Speaker 1: of some act that that on a big edge of
- 27:39Speaker 1: a big wood lot, and another time right in the
- 27:41Speaker 1: middle of a big wood lot on a on that
- 27:44Speaker 1: where a couple of ridges come together. Just kind of
- 27:47Speaker 1: a good funnel type country that should get a lot
- 27:50Speaker 1: of traffic through and especially you know if they're starting
- 27:53Speaker 1: to chase or or cruise for dose. You know, stuff
- 27:56Speaker 1: that at least in my mind, um, should work really well. Um. Yeah,
- 28:02Speaker 1: so are you accustomed to hunting white tails? I guess
- 28:04Speaker 1: That's one of the things I should have asked you
- 28:06Speaker 1: about because you know, I know you you're from the
- 28:09Speaker 1: lower forty eight, which you've been Alaska for a long time, right, Yeah,
- 28:13Speaker 1: I'm I'm super green to hunt in white tails. You know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I seen it on TV a bunch and it always
- 28:20Speaker 1: looked like fun. But this was, you know, my first
- 28:22Speaker 1: chance to really go bow hunt bow hunt white tails.
- 28:25Speaker 1: So you know, I I tried to take you know,
- 28:29Speaker 1: take the advice to the guy guy I was hunting with,
- 28:31Speaker 1: and and uh, yeah, it was a great time. It
- 28:35Speaker 1: was slow, but it was a great time. What was
- 28:37Speaker 1: the key, like, what was the advice that he was
- 28:39Speaker 1: giving you that that he was hoping you would score on? Oh,
- 28:44Speaker 1: pretty much just paying attention and being ready to shoot.
- 28:48Speaker 1: You know, I think that first week in November typically
- 28:51Speaker 1: is pretty hot action and and you know we're in
- 28:55Speaker 1: spots where we're just just ambushing them coming through and
- 29:00Speaker 1: and yeah, just being being ready and keeping your head
- 29:02Speaker 1: on a swivel, sitting all day. What what's one of
- 29:06Speaker 1: the things that seemed to translate to you hunting in Kentucky.
- 29:09Speaker 1: They're um compared to what you're used to hunting. Well,
- 29:13Speaker 1: the tree you know, animal movement, you know, like the
- 29:16Speaker 1: the early morning, late evening seemed to be pretty good.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Uh you know, I mean, it's just typical what animals
- 29:23Speaker 1: like to do. The thing that translated for me is
- 29:26Speaker 1: I do a lot of BlackBerry and grizzly bear hunting
- 29:27Speaker 1: out of tree stands. So it was nice. I like
- 29:30Speaker 1: sitting in a tree and wait and wait, and so
- 29:34Speaker 1: you know, I'm very comfortable operating at a tree stands.
- 29:36Speaker 1: And so that was that translated really well, you know
- 29:39Speaker 1: from how this system all the gear you want to
- 29:42Speaker 1: be comfortable and and hunt effectively. You didn't have to
- 29:45Speaker 1: get in the stand at like one thirty am for
- 29:47Speaker 1: this one though, right, it's kind of a little bit later. No, normally,
- 29:51Speaker 1: you know, I'm used to sitting all night rather than
- 29:53Speaker 1: all days. So that was kind of nice. Do you, um,
- 29:57Speaker 1: if you could, if you had to go, if you
- 29:59Speaker 1: were hunting again this week, this coming week, what would
- 30:02Speaker 1: you change or what would you do differently to to
- 30:05Speaker 1: uh have success? What do you think? You know? I'm
- 30:09Speaker 1: not I mean, I'm not sure if I know enough
- 30:11Speaker 1: about it to really say that I would change stuff.
- 30:14Speaker 1: I would probably you know, the spots I were I
- 30:18Speaker 1: was hunting, were good spots. I think, I think it
- 30:20Speaker 1: was a good plan. Just the timing wasn't right, you know.
- 30:23Speaker 1: And I'm used to hunting animal you know, a lot
- 30:25Speaker 1: of my hunting, I might not see an animal for
- 30:28Speaker 1: days of hunting. Um. So you know, it was I
- 30:32Speaker 1: didn't know what to expect going into it. So I
- 30:35Speaker 1: don't know that I would really change anything about the method.
- 30:38Speaker 1: I would have, just I would just be persistent about it, um,
- 30:41Speaker 1: because I just think I just think it wasn't lining up.
- 30:43Speaker 1: My timing wasn't lined up with them moving in the daytime,
- 30:47Speaker 1: and I you know, for what I hear, it can
- 30:48Speaker 1: switch overnight too. You know. One of the best public
- 30:51Speaker 1: plan hunters I know, Uh, he hunts the same stand
- 30:55Speaker 1: almost all season long, and he kills big deer. And
- 30:57Speaker 1: he also says, when the wind change his direction, you
- 31:00Speaker 1: turn around look the other direction. So sometimes that works, uh,
- 31:04Speaker 1: you know, looking forward as uh, you know, you have
- 31:07Speaker 1: kind of a tough week there. If you were to
- 31:09Speaker 1: predict what you think dear movement's gonna be like in
- 31:12Speaker 1: the next week there in Kentucky, what do you what
- 31:14Speaker 1: would you say on a scale from one to ten?
- 31:17Speaker 1: I mean, I would I would say probably a seven.
- 31:20Speaker 1: You know, if after all that that hot weather, if
- 31:23Speaker 1: they're like any other critter, you know, they're progressively getting
- 31:26Speaker 1: closer to change. We didn't see a lot of chasing,
- 31:29Speaker 1: but they're getting close. And uh, you know, after a
- 31:34Speaker 1: string weather that doesn't want to have that that they
- 31:36Speaker 1: don't want to move in, tempers are supposed to drop.
- 31:39Speaker 1: And I think you know, the guys are already see
- 31:40Speaker 1: even yesterday saw deer moving like crazy. So I think
- 31:44Speaker 1: it's gonna be good. I think they're I think it's
- 31:46Speaker 1: gonna be a good week. Awesome, man, Well, Tyler, we
- 31:48Speaker 1: really appreciate the report. Man, I hope you have a
- 31:50Speaker 1: great winner up there. Yep, thank you. The report is good.
- 31:56Speaker 1: It is out. It is good. Guys. It is the
- 31:58Speaker 1: second week and no member, and you know, you could
- 32:01Speaker 1: argue that this is better than the first week. It
- 32:03Speaker 1: really really is gonna be good, especially appair with this weather.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I'm excited about the reports we got from all these guys. Uh.
- 32:08Speaker 1: If you heard earlier in the podcast, we did put
- 32:10Speaker 1: down some nice Kansas bucks and those hunts will be
- 32:14Speaker 1: on the Buck Truck series on meat or coming up
- 32:17Speaker 1: next summer. So be excited for that. I hope you're
- 32:19Speaker 1: looking forward to it, because we sure are. There are
- 32:21Speaker 1: a couple of things that y'all can check out if
- 32:23Speaker 1: you need to just satiate some of that deer hunting stuff.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Maybe you can't get in the woods until you know
