- 0:13Hello you guys. Welcome back to another episode of the Hawkgirl Energy Podcast.
- 0:18I'm your host, Kayleie, and this is your weekly reminder that it's a
- 0:21new day, a new week, a new mindset, and another day for
- 0:24you to become the Hawkgirl Energy you want to attract. Hello you guys,
- 0:28Happy Tuesday. I really wanted to make an episode about something how I'm feeling
- 0:37right now, and I feel like a lot of people might be feeling this
- 0:40way going into a new season. And maybe this also depends on where you
- 0:46live in the world, but personally, for me, I have been feeling
- 0:50kind of off these past few weeks since I've been home from my trip,
- 0:55and I think a lot of it has to do with just feeling a bit
- 0:58more stressed than you usual. You know, obviously, there's just stress that
- 1:03everyone deals with when it comes to work or school or anything like that,
- 1:07but I feel like, on top of that, I'm also dealing with stress
- 1:11with planning a wedding. Obviously, it's definitely a stressful experience. If you
- 1:19have ever been a bride, or if you currently are a bride, you
- 1:22understand that there's a lot of things to compromise on with your partner and also
- 1:30just yeah, finding a venue, going through budgets all that. So it's
- 1:34just been a stressful past few weeks. And not only that, I think
- 1:40the weather has also played a huge impact in how I've been feeling. We
- 1:44have not seen the sun at all this week, like I think, like
- 1:49not this week going into a new week, Like last week completely we had
- 1:51no sunshine, like every single day we woke up and it was just gloom
- 1:55like completely gloomy days, rainy days, all that. So going into a
- 2:00new week and it's going to be gloomy for the rest of this week as
- 2:02well. So I always find whenever the weather is like this, I do
- 2:07get in a darker headspace, just like not feeling my overall self and just
- 2:13not yeah, getting out of the house at all. I feel like whenever
- 2:15it starts to get colder and the seasons start to change, I feel like
- 2:20I hibernate. I don't like to leave my house. I think it's considered
- 2:23hibernation season, especially for people who live in Canada like myself. You guys
- 2:28get it. You know, it gets colder, the mornings are dark when
- 2:30you wake up, the sun sets earlier, so it gets dark super fast
- 2:35at night, it just feels off. Especially when you're in the summertime,
- 2:39it's completely different, right, Like the sun is up by like five point
- 2:43thirty in the morning, you have the sunset that doesn't set to like nine
- 2:46pm at night. You want to be going out with your friends. You
- 2:50want to enjoy the warm weather. So I feel like going into the colder
- 2:53season, it's more hibernation mode, like there's less going out and all that.
- 2:58And I consider myself a very so so like I like to be in
- 3:00social settings, So I think seasons like this, when it does get closer
- 3:06to the winter season and all that, it just gets a bit hard on
- 3:08me mentally. But that's okay. I really wanted to take the time to
- 3:15just talk about mental health in today's episode. I really want to talk about
- 3:20ways we can take care of ourselves during difficult times like this. Not saying
- 3:24that all these things are going to cure you or cure your mental health or
- 3:29anything like that. It's more so just to maybe remind yourself do these things
- 3:34for yourself to make yourself feel a bit better. And this is also a
- 3:36good reminder for myself because I know doing these things makes me feel so much
- 3:40better. And yeah, so anyways, let's get into this episode and talk
- 3:46about how we can take care of ourselves during a new season and just some
- 3:49tips on how to improve your mental health. Okay, first off, I'm
- 3:53going to talk about the one that I personally think is the biggest priority in
- 3:57everyone's life in general. Like I personally think everyone should be contributing this into
- 4:01their weekly schedule, and that is just exercise in general, just moving your
- 4:06body, finding ways to stay active. I always talk to you guys about
- 4:12figuring out a workout schedule for yourself. And maybe you're that kind of person
- 4:15that doesn't like to go to the gym. Maybe you're that kind of person
- 4:16that likes to walk a lot, or likes to go on runs, or
- 4:19likes to play activities like sports like soccer, hockey, anything like that,
- 4:24Like that is totally fine. Just figuring out ways to move your body is
- 4:29so important. I truly believe that working out has made such a big impact
- 4:33in my life for the better. I remember myself like back in my college
- 4:38days, where I did not do any workouts at all, and I know
- 4:41my mental health wasn't the greatest one I was back in my college days.
- 4:45Because I didn't take any time for myself to move my body and make my
- 4:48health a priority. So if there's one thing out of everything that I even
- 4:53talk about in today's episode, I think the biggest component out of everything is
- 4:58making sure you find ways to move your body and exercise. Like I said,
- 5:00if you're not a gym person, just do a bunch of daily walks.
- 5:04If you prefer running, going for runs outdoors, Like, just finding
- 5:09ways to move your body is so so important. Talking about walking and all
- 5:15that makes me think of another key component, and that is just being outside,
- 5:18getting fresh air, enjoying the nature. I think it's so healing to
- 5:24be in an outdoor space. I love, love, love just going on
- 5:30a long walk with Freddie, enjoying the fresh air. Sometimes I put music
- 5:33on, sometimes I put a podcast on. I find it very therapeutic in
- 5:38my opinion. And even running in the trails, like that's something I absolutely
- 5:43love to do. During the summertime, I definitely feel like I need to
- 5:46make it a bigger priority even during the fall season before we head into winter.
- 5:49I think for myself, I need to start investing in myself by you
- 5:54know, maybe investing in proper apparel, to wear for running in the colder
- 5:59season and you're spending money. There's wants and there's needs, And I feel
- 6:01like needs could be for me is buying running apparel that could actually be fitting
- 6:06for the colder season instead of me spending money on, you know, a
- 6:11sweater that I liked from Zara. I don't know, but just a comparison.
- 6:14But I personally think I need to be better at figuring out ways to
- 6:16invest in myself that could help my mental health. But yeah, I think
- 6:23being outside in general is so important. I also love to go on hikes
- 6:27with my friends, especially during the fall season when you see the leaves change
- 6:30and all that. I think it's really enjoyable to go on a hike with
- 6:34your friends and it gives you an opportunity to be in a social environment,
- 6:39chatting with them and obviously getting some fresh air, and it's just something to
- 6:43look forward to as well. Right, So, I think a key component
- 6:46when it comes to hibernation season is making sure you stay in social environments,
- 6:53making sure you keep yourself busy in different ways and force yourself out the door.
- 6:58Like I'm even telling this to my I'm like, I need to force
- 7:00myself out of the house today, Like, even if it is just going
- 7:03for a twenty minute walk, I know I'm gonna feel so much better just
- 7:06kicking my butt out the door and just enjoying the nature and enjoying the fresh
- 7:11air. So yeah, I just personally feel like nature makes you feel so
- 7:15much better emotionally and it contributes so much to your physical well being. It
- 7:20could also just bring so much positivity when it comes to emotions, calmness,
- 7:25joy, creativity, all that. Just I really believe that there is something
- 7:29connected to nature when it comes to people's mental health and yeah, just helping
- 7:33out anxiety, stress, anything like that. So that's personally my opinion.
- 7:36When it comes to going outside and getting some fresh air, I do truly
- 7:41believe that just walking outside for fifteen to twenty minutes a day could really make
- 7:46a huge difference in your mood. Okay, another one, as I just
- 7:51mentioned, which was about being in social settings, is making a social connection
- 7:57to someone, whether it's face to face or a FaceTime or calling someone,
- 8:03just having that communication with someone else besides being on your own. So I'm
- 8:07going to give a very realistic example. Last night, my sister and I
- 8:11were on FaceTime for two hours, and I was alone last night. Zach
- 8:16had a work meeting with his job and was gone for like three hours.
- 8:20So I ate dinner alone. I enjoyed some solo time, but sometimes you
- 8:26have to be in the right headspace to have a solo night or day to
- 8:31yourself, you know what I mean. Like I think last night, I
- 8:33personally really wanted to be in a social setting. I really wanted to interact
- 8:37with someone else. I felt a little alone last night, and I didn't
- 8:41really want to be alone. I wasn't really, you know, not like
- 8:45I wasn't prepared, but I just wasn't. It wasn't in my schedule yesterday
- 8:48to have a solo night to myself. Like I didn't want to glamorize a
- 8:52night to myself. I don't know why. I just wasn't feeling that way.
- 8:54So instead, me and my sister FaceTime for two hours, and that
- 8:58was honestly probably the high light of my night, just connect with her,
- 9:01touch base with her, catch up on things all that. So it's important
- 9:05to schedule FaceTime calls with your friends or a family member, whether it's going
- 9:09to get a coffee, going to get ice cream, anything like that.
- 9:11I think it's so important to again force yourself out of the house to be
- 9:16with someone and be in a social environment. I feel like I really really
- 9:20enjoy being in social environments. It's just something that personally makes me feel so
- 9:24much better, and I know it makes my mood so much better. And
- 9:28it was just like nice to connect with my sister and just it's always nice
- 9:31to connect with a friend. And just if you have any concerns or stress
- 9:35or worries, this could be a good opportunity for you to also share that
- 9:39with your friend and maybe they can help you think of ways to overcome that
- 9:45stress, overcome those concerns or worries or anything like that. So sometimes it's
- 9:48good to also talk it out with a friend or a family member. So
- 9:52yeah, it was just like really nice to have a night like that with
- 9:54my sister. And as I said, I just really really really like to
- 9:58prioritize some social time when it comes to my mood and just feeling this way.
- 10:03I think it's really really important to continue being in social environments and continuing
- 10:09to express how you feel to a friend, or to a parent, or
- 10:13to a family member. Okay, another one is take up some relaxation practice.
- 10:18This is definitely something I could definitely improve on, which is either meditation,
- 10:24yoga, mindfulness, deep breathing. I think deep breathing is probably the
- 10:30easiest one out of all those for someone to take on to their day to
- 10:33day life. I think it's really easy to ease something like that into your
- 10:37routine. So I think one thing for me, when it comes to overwhelming
- 10:41and being stressed or anything like that, sometimes you just need a second to
- 10:46take a break, you know, get away from your computer screen or your
- 10:48phone or anything like that, take a few deep breasts, just kind of
- 10:52reconnect to yourself and get back into the zone. Like meditation is obviously a
- 10:56huge one. I think that one has played a really big impact in my
- 11:01daily routine. It's not something I'm very consistent with, to be honest,
- 11:05I wish I could be better at it, but I am not. But
- 11:07I do feel so relaxed and so much better when I do meditate, And
- 11:13there is a lot of practicing deep breathing and all that when you are doing
- 11:16meditation, So personally, for me, that's probably one of my favorite ways
- 11:20to really relax myself and just really distress. But there is ways, Like
- 11:26I said, like just doing some deep breathing and stepping aside for a few
- 11:31minutes just to really control your mind and all that. And a good thing
- 11:35could be also just setting reminders in your phone of hey, take a second
- 11:39and just breathe and almost like reevaluate yourself, like just like take a second
- 11:43to yourself and then get back into what you have to do for work,
- 11:46Like it takes literally two minutes, as I said, And I think it
- 11:50could be a really really good practice for yourself just to really feel distressed and
- 11:54really just get refocused as well and what you're doing and all that. So
- 12:00yeah, I think it could be really important just to set some times for
- 12:01yourself to practice some conscious breathing. Another huge factor when it comes to our
- 12:07mental health that I really think people don't think about is what we eat.
- 12:11I think it's really important to pay attention to what we are actually fueling our
- 12:16bodies with. I think eating healthy could play a huge role in your mood
- 12:20specifically. Obviously, I try eating healthy as much as I can. I
- 12:26am human, though, and I do crave certain foods like everyone else does.
- 12:31And I wanted to do some research on foods that can actually help change
- 12:35your mood, Like, what are the top foods that are good for your
- 12:39overall health and just boosting your mood in general and apparently with consistency these foods
- 12:46specifically. This is what they said, is that vegetables omega threes, beans,
- 12:52nuts like walnuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, avocados, greens obviously
- 12:58like spinach, kale, bread sprouts, and then fruits. I think blueberries
- 13:01is one of the top ones they said for fruits. Another one was dark
- 13:05chocolate. I actually knew about that, but dark chocolate has also been found
- 13:09to be potentially very beneficial for your mental health as well. So I am
- 13:15not obviously a nutrition as I am not a dietary coach or anything like that,
- 13:20but I think it's important to do your own research figure out things that
- 13:24could help improve your mood. And I'm not saying these foods are going to
- 13:28cure your mental health. I'm not saying that at all. These are just
- 13:31foods that I research that could be considered high nutrient foods and that could really
- 13:35just help support your overall mood, mental health and all that. And as
- 13:39I said, just being mindful of what you're fueling your body with, I
- 13:43think is just important in general. I think if you're eating like crap all
- 13:46week and you feel like shit, I mean realistically, it's because you've been
- 13:50eating like crap all week. If you know, change your diet to more
- 13:54of a healthier lifestyle and eating more healthier foods like there could be a small
- 13:56impact where I could actually affect your mood of it. So that's I think
- 14:01a huge one that if you're you know, not following a healthy lifestyle when
- 14:05it comes to eating, I think it's probably important to maybe reevaluate and see
- 14:09what can you change in your day to day foods that you eat that could
- 14:13potentially help you improve your mood and your mental health by including these healthier foods
- 14:16like greens, fruits, all that. So again, do your own research.
- 14:20I think it's important for everyone to figure out things for themselves because everyone's
- 14:24different, everyone likes different things. But yeah, I think it's really really
- 14:28important to really make sure you're aware of what you're fueling your body with.
- 14:31Okay, this next one I think is something that is going on with me
- 14:37and that is not getting enough sleep. I think with the whole time change
- 14:41and all that, when we were in Europe and coming home, I think
- 14:43I was not getting enough sleep these past few weeks since I've been home.
- 14:48I think I really need to catch up on that. So I've been really
- 14:52allowing my body to sleep in, Like, just listen to my body.
- 14:56If my alarm goes off and I feel awake to get out of bed,
- 15:00I will get out of bed. If my body is telling me, killy,
- 15:01no, you need to sleep more, I will sleep more. So
- 15:05I think right now, I think a huge thing for my mental health is
- 15:07not getting enough sleep. I need to really get back into a good bedtime
- 15:11routine schedule. I truly believe that having a good sleep schedule really makes a
- 15:16huge difference. I personally like to go to bed at ten and I like
- 15:20to wake up for seven. That's like my ideal sleeping schedule. Some mornings,
- 15:26I go to bed at ten and I wake up at five. Some
- 15:28mornings I go to bed at ten and I wake up at six. It
- 15:31really just depends. I don't really go to bed much later than ten PM
- 15:33because Zach works a very hard labor job. He's an electrician, so he's
- 15:39in the trades, so he's usually in bed by like nine thirty. So
- 15:41I'm usually awake for about thirty minutes more going on my phone or just watching
- 15:46a TV show or reading whatever I decide to do. And usually around the
- 15:50ten PM mark is when I feel tired, maybe ten fifteen sometimes, But
- 15:54I wouldn't say I really like go to sleep later than that. I just
- 15:58my body naturally wants to go to bed at that time, but waking up
- 16:02I kind of change it up sometimes. But yeah, I think right now
- 16:04I really need to listen to my body and just really focus on getting good
- 16:10night's sleeps. I usually need about seven eight hours of sleep to function at
- 16:12my best. I think that's pretty common for a lot of people as well.
- 16:17But yeah, I think having a good sleep schedule is very very important.
- 16:21So if you're someone who doesn't have a good sleep schedule, then I
- 16:23think it's important to try and create one for yourself. It's not going to
- 16:26happen overnight. It's not going to happen in a few days. It's going
- 16:30to be a few weeks until you get into a really good, consistent routine.
- 16:33But it will really help out your mental health. I truly believe that.
- 16:37I truly believe that it's going to help you, you know, have
- 16:40lower risks of you getting sick and just your overall physical health. So yeah,
- 16:45I just think it's really really important to make that a priority. And
- 16:48if you're having trouble sleeping, this might be something that you need to change
- 16:52into your night routine. Maybe you need to remove your phone from your bedroom
- 16:56for thirty minutes before you go to bed and read a book instead. Maybe
- 17:00you need to find different ways to relax yourself, like maybe meditating or maybe
- 17:04taking a hot bath before bed. Anything that's really going to relax your body
- 17:08and mind before bed is so important because I truly believe that would make a
- 17:12huge impact in your sleep. So yeah, maybe reevaluate your night routine and
- 17:18find ways to relax yourself before bed if you are someone that just always has
- 17:22a hard time falling asleep. Another one is finding a hobby, finding something
- 17:26you enjoy doing and making time for it. So this is something that I've
- 17:32actually recently discovered about myself, and I've realized that I don't really have a
- 17:37hobby with other people, Like I have hobbies for myself, but they're all
- 17:42by myself, Like I don't. It's not in social environments. All the
- 17:45hobbies that I do are by myself, So I've been wanting to get into
- 17:51a hobby this winter season, and I decided to join a soccer team and
- 17:56a few of my friends are on it, and I think it's going to
- 17:59be something that I going to really enjoy because I'm getting out of the house,
- 18:03I'm in a social setting, I'm with my friends already, I'm doing
- 18:06active activity, which is even better being able to move my body and get
- 18:11some exercise in. But also consider this a hobby is a huge, huge
- 18:15bonus, and I think that's one thing that I really feel like I am
- 18:18missing in my life is my sports. I grew up playing two competitive sports
- 18:23my entire life, like always, always, always was at a soccer field
- 18:29or at an arena playing ringette. So no matter what, I was busy,
- 18:33like five nights a week while I was in school in like elementary school
- 18:37and high school, it just was a huge sports girl. And then college
- 18:40came and I completely dropped all my sports and just focused on school. And
- 18:45then eventually I started to figure out, you know, going to the gym,
- 18:48working out all that. But I truly feel like I have been missing
- 18:52out on that social aspect and having that hobby in my life of getting back
- 18:56into my sports. So I'm really really excited to join this winter soccer team.
- 19:02I did join a soccer team this past summer, but I unfortunately got
- 19:06injured. So I'm praying to God that it will be a very successful soccer
- 19:11season this winter and it will prep me for the summer season. But yeah,
- 19:15I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to being with my friends
- 19:18and as I said, just getting out of the house and being in a
- 19:21social environment and doing a hobby that I enjoy. I love playing soccer.
- 19:25I love that I'm able to get back into that from something that I used
- 19:29to love when I was a kid, and as I said, like getting
- 19:33some exercise, which is a huge bonus into this hobby. So if you're
- 19:37someone that you know doesn't have very many hobbies and maybe you've been feeling off
- 19:41and you feel like something's missing, maybe it's finding a new hobby for yourself
- 19:44to do with your friends and being in a social setting. Like hobbies could
- 19:47be so many different things. You could join a paint class, you can
- 19:49join a book club. Like doesn't have to be active, but obviously active
- 19:52is a bonus. But I think it's important to really figure out do you
- 19:56have any hobbies, and should you be joining a new hobby maybe in a
- 20:02social setting because maybe you spend too much time alone, Maybe you need to
- 20:06be in a social environment. I think for myself personally, I spend too
- 20:08much time on my own because I do work for myself. I am home
- 20:11alone whenever I do work, and I think I need that push to be
- 20:17in more social settings. So joining a soccer team is going to be a
- 20:21good way for me to be in a social setting and enjoy some physical activity
- 20:25and enjoy a hobby. So that's personally what I think is super important.
- 20:29And another thing is is that it also allows you to take a break from
- 20:33anything that's going on in your life. Like for me, it allows me
- 20:37to take a break from social media and just get out and live like a
- 20:41young version of me again of just enjoying time with friends and playing the sport
- 20:47I love and not having to worry about social media or my job or anything
- 20:49like that. Right, So it's a good way to take a break,
- 20:53and it's a good way to ease some stress on anything that you are going
- 20:59through currently. So yeah, so it's a good thing for your mental health
- 21:02in general, just to really get a new hobby into your day to day
- 21:06life. And then lastly, if you personally feel like you are doing everything
- 21:11you can to improve your mental health and you personally feel that you are still
- 21:15not where you want to be, then maybe it's time for you to seek
- 21:18professional help. There is nothing, nothing wrong for you to go to a
- 21:23therapist if you are not feeling one hundred percent. There is mental health professionals
- 21:27out there for a reason. They have that job for a reason where they
- 21:32can help you. I have been fully open about my experience on seeing a
- 21:36therapist the beginning of this year. I was seeing a therapist for the first
- 21:41four months of this year and I haven't been back since. To be honest,
- 21:45which I think as I said, I do think there is a huge
- 21:48weather impact in my mindset. Unfortunately, I don't want to say I have
- 21:52seasonal depression, but I definitely have something when it comes to the seasons,
- 21:56because summertime, I feel like I'm a whole new human. I feel like
- 22:00I'm at my happiest self. But as soon as we get into the colder
- 22:03months, I feel like I mentally am not in the right headspace. And
- 22:07having that therapist was hugely beneficial and talk to her about anything that I know
- 22:12personally wanted to get off my chest or anything like that. So I really
- 22:15want to try and get back into it and at least try and do a
- 22:18monthly session, maybe even throughout the summertime. I may not need it,
- 22:22but it would be a good way for me to connect with someone who is
- 22:26a professional and being able again just to talk to that person out through anything
- 22:33that I'm going through. Obviously, everyone has their ups and downs no matter
- 22:36what. There's going to be highs, there's going to be lows, and
- 22:38you know, not every month will be perfect. And being able to have
- 22:42someone that you can connect with that is obviously professional and just knowing that you
- 22:48have someone to talk to if you need to, I think is really really
- 22:51important. So yeah, I think if you definitely feel like you've done everything
- 22:56you can to improve your mental health and maybe it's time for you to seek
- 23:00professional help, and there's nothing wrong with that, absolutely nothing wrong with that.
- 23:03If anything go you, I think it's so so important to just,
- 23:07yeah, do whatever you need to do to make yourself feel your best self.
- 23:11But yeah, those are just some tips I can think of currently of
- 23:15just what I personally think helps me out when I'm feeling not my best self.
- 23:21I think, as I said, there's going to be highs and lows
- 23:23no matter what. I know. This is just a low right now,
- 23:26but I'm going to get back into my high sooner than I think. And
- 23:30I think a lot of these things I need to take in for myself and
- 23:33just start making it a priority. And I'm definitely going to walk away from
- 23:37this episode and just really take a lot of these things into my routine and
- 23:44just day to day life for the next few days just to really improve my
- 23:47overall mental health and just really ease my stress and all that. So if
- 23:51you're going through a hard time right now, just know you're not alone.
- 23:53I love you all so much, and I just know that these things are
- 23:56really really going to help you out if you personally feel you are at a
- 24:00low right now. So just no, as I said, you're not alone
- 24:03and things will get better. We are all about positivity here. We are
- 24:08going to be okay and things are going to get better for us. Anyways.
