- 0:02We recognize the electromagnetic spectrum, the color spectrum,
- 0:07the sound wave spectrum, and others each as representing A
- 0:12continuum of waveforms with varying characteristics.
- 0:18There are shorter, more intense waves and longer wave
- 0:21frequencies. Some conduct tremendous amounts
- 0:25of physical heat, such as infrared frequencies.
- 0:30While others, such as ultraviolet have longer
- 0:33waveforms, there is a range within each spectrum that we can
- 0:38perceive with our senses, and there are ranges both below and
- 0:44above the vibratory levels we can pick up that represent
- 0:49extensions of those Spectra. Some beings respond to ranges
- 0:54different from those that the human being can respond to.
- 0:58Which includes dogs who can perceive sounds in far higher
- 1:01ranges than we find audible. Similarly, there is a continuum
- 1:08of consciousness. The range of consciousness
- 1:11within which we respond and act as human beings is not the
- 1:16entirety of the range. There are levels below and above
- 1:21those we can experience normally.
- 1:24In some cases we can become aware of extended ranges below
- 1:28or above, but in many cases we only become aware of the effects
- 1:33they produce without direct perception of the waveforms of
- 1:37the consciousness themselves. At a certain point we can
- 1:42recognize that even what appears to be inanimate matter has an
- 1:47involved consciousness, as we understand from the study of
- 1:52physics. When varying waves interact with
- 1:56one another, they can either accentuate the action or disrupt
- 2:01the action to a greater or lesser degree.
- 2:04Thus, as different levels of consciousness generate their
- 2:08characteristic waveforms, we find that in some cases there is
- 2:13an enhanced power of understanding and coordinated
- 2:16action, while in other cases things can be confused or
- 2:21chaotic. Shriorobindo notes quote As we
- 2:27progress and awaken to the soul in us and things, we shall
- 2:32realize that there is a consciousness also in the plant,
- 2:35in the metal, in the atom, in electricity, in everything that
- 2:41belongs to physical nature. We shall find even that it is
- 2:45not really in all respects a lower or more limited mode than
- 2:49the mental. On the contrary, it is in many
- 2:53inanimate forms more intense, rapid, poignant, the less
- 2:58evolved towards the surface. But this also this consciousness
- 3:03of vital and physical nature is, compared with chit, a lower, and
- 3:08therefore a limited, form, mode and movement.
- 3:12These lower modes of consciousness are the conscious
- 3:15stuff of inferior planes in one indivisible existence.
- 3:21In ourselves also there is in our subconscious being an action
- 3:25which is precisely that of the inanimate physical nature,
- 3:29whence has been constituted the basis of our physical being,
- 3:35another which is that of plant life, and another which is that
- 3:39of the lower animal creation around us.
- 3:43All these are so much dominated and conditioned by the thinking
- 3:47and reasoning conscious being in us.
- 3:50That we have no real awareness of these lower planes.
- 3:53We are unable to perceive in their own terms what these parts
- 3:57of us are doing, and receive it very imperfectly in the terms
- 4:02and values of the thinking and reasoning mind.
- 4:06Still, we know well enough that there is an animal in us, as
- 4:10well as that which is characteristically human,
- 4:14something which is a creature of conscious instinct and impulse.
- 4:18Not reflective or rational, as well as that which turns back in
- 4:23thought and will on its experience, meets it from above
- 4:27with the light and force of a higher plane, and to some degree
- 4:31controls, uses and modifies it. But the animal in man is only
- 4:37the head of our subhuman being. Below it there is much that is
- 4:42also sub animal and merely vital.
- 4:46Much that acts by an instinct or an impulse of which the
- 4:50constituting consciousness is withdrawn behind the surface,
- 4:55below the sub animal being there is at a further depth the
- 4:59subvital. When we advance in that ultra
- 5:05normal self knowledge and experience which yoga brings
- 5:10with it, we become aware. That the body too, has a
- 5:14consciousness of its own. It has habits, impulses,
- 5:20instincts, and inert yet effective will, which differs
- 5:24from that of the rest of our being, and can resist it and
- 5:28condition its effectiveness. Much of the struggle in our
- 5:33being is due to this composite existence and the interaction of
- 5:37these varied and heterogeneous planes on each other.
- 5:42For man here is the result of an evolution, and contains in
- 5:47himself the whole of that evolution, up from the merely
- 5:51physical and subvital conscious being to the mental creature
- 5:57which at the top he is. But this evolution is really a
- 6:02manifestation, and just as we have in us these subnormal
- 6:06selves and subhuman planes, so are there in us above our mental
