Latest / Birdland Territory / Colton Cowser, two walkoffs in two days!
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Aw something you don't see every day, to walk off
- 0:09Speaker 1: wins in two days for the Orioles who needed it.
- 0:13Speaker 1: They needed a big homestand they have the makings of
- 0:16Speaker 1: one here winning three of four to start the homestand
- 0:19Speaker 1: against the Tigers and Monday thriller against their Rays nine
- 0:24Speaker 1: seven and thirteen innings. What a wild game. And we're
- 0:27Speaker 1: going to review that in a lot more today here
- 0:29Speaker 1: on Berdland Territory with Steve Maleski, Brad Brock and Tim Barblace. So, guys,
- 0:34Speaker 1: two to two game after nine that's hard to you know,
- 0:38Speaker 1: sometimes you might forget that the way it ended up,
- 0:40Speaker 1: two in the eleventh for each team, one in the twelfth,
- 0:44Speaker 1: two runs in the top of the thirteenth for the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Rays that made it seven to five, and then the
- 0:50Speaker 1: Orioles scored four to win it nine to seven. So
- 0:54Speaker 1: much happened. And before we get into Cows, a real
- 0:57Speaker 1: quick note on just a resiliency I guess of the offense,
- 1:01Speaker 1: because I don't know how you guys felt watching that game.
- 1:03Speaker 1: I felt, we get to the second or third time,
- 1:06Speaker 1: they're not going to be able to answer this time,
- 1:08Speaker 1: but they did each time.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, like you said, it was a thrilling win.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I think when you're watching that game, just kind of
- 1:15Speaker 2: how the season has been going. They gave up those
- 1:17Speaker 2: couple of runs and you kind of get, you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: a little disheartened there, and it's all how they're gonna
- 1:21Speaker 2: how they're gonna scratch together a couple here after not
- 1:23Speaker 2: being able to do much the first nine. But like
- 1:26Speaker 2: you said, that was just a big, big resiliency win
- 1:28Speaker 2: and just big comeback each inning that they gave up runs,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and I think, uh, this might have been one of
- 1:33Speaker 2: the bigger wins we've seen this season. The opponent, uh,
- 1:37Speaker 2: just getting down like they did in extra innings. We
- 1:38Speaker 2: haven't seen them come back a ton, but just the
- 1:41Speaker 2: offense did a great job and you know the pitchers
- 1:43Speaker 2: there that they gave up some runs, but they didn't
- 1:45Speaker 2: allow the lead to get bigger, and I think that
- 1:47Speaker 2: was kind of the key there. They gave up the
- 1:49Speaker 2: two but with this new extra innings format, it's two
- 1:52Speaker 2: runs isn't a terrible number to come from behind. And
- 1:55Speaker 2: I think, uh that that will get overlooked a little
- 1:57Speaker 2: bit because they gave up their runs, but I think
- 1:59Speaker 2: not giving up the third or fourth run is really
- 2:02Speaker 2: what was able to allow them to win the game yesterday.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It was such an unbelievable game. Guys like just and
- 2:10Speaker 3: Stevie said it. The Race took the lead in the eleventh, twelfth,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and thirteenth inning, and the Orioles were able to grind
- 2:16Speaker 3: their way back into it every single time. And Colton Kowser,
- 2:20Speaker 3: obviously he played the role of hero.
- 2:22Speaker 4: But you think of all of the guys that.
- 2:24Speaker 3: Led up until that point, you know, Leoti Taveres coming
- 2:27Speaker 3: through with the double blaze, Alexander even Jackson Holliday hitting
- 2:31Speaker 3: the sackfly to tie the game at that point.
- 2:34Speaker 4: There were just so many guys that made big time
- 2:37Speaker 4: impacts in that game. And heck, you know, with it
- 2:40Speaker 4: going thirteen, you almost forget about Kyle Bradish and the
- 2:44Speaker 4: start that he was able to deliver.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Yeah, four hours of baseball, a lot happened, a lot,
- 2:50Speaker 1: some good, some not good. But the Oriols outlasted the
- 2:53Speaker 1: Rage and they the Oriols do have a winning record
- 2:55Speaker 1: at home fifteen and thirteen something to build on, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: they need to turn a three and one homestand start
- 3:01Speaker 1: into a seven and three or something like that. It
- 3:03Speaker 1: could really be a difference maker for this team. So, guys,
- 3:07Speaker 1: Sunday morning, Colton Cawser was batting one ninety three with
- 3:10Speaker 1: a five point thirty ops. Two walk offs in two
- 3:13Speaker 1: days get his OPS over six hundred. The last oriole
- 3:17Speaker 1: to do it, and back to back days, not games, remember,
- 3:20Speaker 1: because there was a game in between that where he
- 3:22Speaker 1: didn't have a walkoff Sunday night was Fred Lane in
- 3:25Speaker 1: nineteen seventy five. I believe it. What nineteen eighty five,
- 3:29Speaker 1: May tenth and eleventh, So pretty impressive stuff. What could
- 3:33Speaker 1: it mean for Calser here in the next few weeks.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, See, we were kind of talking before the before
- 3:39Speaker 2: the episode. It's just that powers there. Everybody knows it's there.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Just got to see more contact. It seems like whenever
- 3:46Speaker 2: he makes contact, solid contact with the ball, it's a
- 3:49Speaker 2: four hundred foot homer. It's it's really impressive with his contact,
- 3:52Speaker 2: and I see him having better at bats. Early in
- 3:55Speaker 2: the season, he really really struggled on off speed pitches.
- 3:58Speaker 2: To me, it's now he's able to kind of spoil
- 4:01Speaker 2: those pitches to kind of get to more fastballs. At
- 4:03Speaker 2: least that's what it's seen here in the last couple
- 4:05Speaker 2: of weeks. I think you know them just talking about
- 4:07Speaker 2: we talked about the other day, just him working really hard,
- 4:09Speaker 2: and I think it's more of an approach base than
- 4:11Speaker 2: it is working on a swing. He kind of mentioned
- 4:13Speaker 2: it after the game yesterday. It's just get up there,
- 4:15Speaker 2: forget about the approach. Just try to put the bat
- 4:17Speaker 2: on the ball and get better swings off. And that's
- 4:20Speaker 2: kind of what you're seeing here lately. And I'd love
- 4:22Speaker 2: to see him get more at that. It's more consistent
- 4:23Speaker 2: playing time. I know they try to get him against
- 4:25Speaker 2: righties only, but he's just one of those guys I
- 4:27Speaker 2: feel it could be a huge difference maker that I'd
- 4:29Speaker 2: love to see him just get a four or five
- 4:31Speaker 2: game stretch where he played every game, took every bat.
- 4:34Speaker 2: You just never know what you can get from him.
- 4:35Speaker 2: He has shown it before and I'd love to see
- 4:37Speaker 2: it again.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 3: We touched on this a lot Sunday guys, where he's
- 4:43Speaker 3: such a big X factor for this offense, and he's
- 4:46Speaker 3: been a feaster famine player throughout his career, but right
- 4:49Speaker 3: now he's doing a lot of feasting and in the
- 4:52Speaker 3: month of May he's got a very respectable seven eighty
- 4:56Speaker 3: nine ops but especially in these past eight games where
- 5:00Speaker 3: three point thirty three batting average ops over twelve hundred.
- 5:03Speaker 3: He's got the three home runs, obviously two of those
- 5:06Speaker 3: being walkofs. You know what, he can deliver defensively, but
- 5:10Speaker 3: if he can just be more consistent as a hitter,
- 5:15Speaker 3: that's just gonna do wonders for this team. It really will.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Interesting scenarios coming up Tuesday night or right handers, so
- 5:23Speaker 1: cows are almost assuredly we'll be in there Wednesday and Thursday,
- 5:27Speaker 1: look like lefties the Oels will face. I'm reaching the
- 5:30Speaker 1: point where I'm putting Cows are in over O'Neill. It's
- 5:33Speaker 1: gotten that bad for Tyler O'Neill. He was signed to
- 5:36Speaker 1: hit lefties. He's not even coming close to hitting them.
- 5:39Speaker 1: I think that's a decision they got to consider here
- 5:41Speaker 1: coming up.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so too. And you know what I
- 5:44Speaker 2: think with Colton, he has such a contagious personality that
- 5:47Speaker 2: when he gets going, I feel like he could jumpstart
- 5:50Speaker 2: other guys on this team in this offense. I could
- 5:53Speaker 2: just tell by the reactions how much this team really
- 5:55Speaker 2: cares about Colon and how like his success. And it's
- 5:58Speaker 2: just one of those things I'd love to see him
- 6:00Speaker 2: and get out there. Like I'm with you, Steve, I
- 6:01Speaker 2: think he should play these next three four games, just
- 6:04Speaker 2: see you just never know. It's the production isn't coming
- 6:06Speaker 2: from the other guys. You just have reached the point
- 6:09Speaker 2: of the season. Why not give it a shot and
- 6:11Speaker 2: see what he can do? Like you said, t him
- 6:13Speaker 2: with his defense, he gives you more out there than
- 6:15Speaker 2: other guys give. And I just love to see if
- 6:17Speaker 2: he could get high.
- 6:18Speaker 4: You just never know.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He could go in a two week tear and have
- 6:20Speaker 2: five or six homers and really just kind of jump
- 6:22Speaker 2: start everybody. And like I said, with his personality, just
- 6:25Speaker 2: being around the team a couple of years ago in
- 6:27Speaker 2: the clubhouse, he was so friendly to everybody. Was guys
- 6:30Speaker 2: kind of joke with him. He's kind of the one
- 6:32Speaker 2: that guys go to and joke with and get along with.
- 6:34Speaker 2: So well, you just never know what he could do
- 6:36Speaker 2: for the team as a whole.
- 6:38Speaker 3: He's definitely got that outgoing personality and it's very infectious
- 6:42Speaker 3: and you can tell that the team really really loves it.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But he seems like he's in this hot streak like that.
- 6:48Speaker 3: That's where it's just keep letting it ride, and Steve,
- 6:51Speaker 3: you're right. The Tyler O'Neil signing, it just has not
- 6:55Speaker 3: played out how they would have been visioned. At this point,
- 6:58Speaker 3: he is really, really struggle struggling against left handed pitching,
- 7:02Speaker 3: to the point where you look at Colton Cowser's numbers
- 7:05Speaker 3: being a left handed bat, He's got better numbers than
- 7:08Speaker 3: Tyler o'meal hitting left handed pitching. So I don't even
- 7:11Speaker 3: think it's that huge of a decision at this point.
- 7:14Speaker 3: You got a ride with the hot hand.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Colton Cowser man two special swings. He hit one four forty,
- 7:20Speaker 1: he hit one four twenty five, and they both produce
- 7:23Speaker 1: walk off wins for the Orioles, two in two days.
- 7:25Speaker 1: You've never had a walk off hitting his pro career,
- 7:28Speaker 1: or at least his major league career, and now he's got
- 7:31Speaker 1: two in a row. We'll talk about some more O's
- 7:33Speaker 1: topics coming up here in a moment on Birdland Territory.
- 7:37Speaker 5: Godfather, I'm a last minute guy. Sometimes you're a last
- 7:39Speaker 5: minute guy where you all of a sudden see a
- 7:42Speaker 5: night open up and you want to go grab some tickets,
- 7:44Speaker 5: and you hadn't gotten them already, so you're going to
- 7:47Speaker 5: seek geek, and you're gonna go look for a green
- 7:49Speaker 5: dot and see where the good seats are and the
- 7:51Speaker 5: good value is and have a little night with the fam.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Right boy, without a doubt. And I'm looking for some
- 7:56Speaker 6: of the best seats. I'm looking for that green dot.
- 7:58Speaker 6: When I get that. The simple plug it in, use
- 8:01Speaker 6: your hands, go right on your screen, your phone, whatever
- 8:05Speaker 6: platform you can get it on. And it's so simple.
- 8:08Speaker 6: They make it so easy for you to do. Even
- 8:11Speaker 6: my son can do it if I ask them. Hey, Blakester,
- 8:13Speaker 6: let's go, man, get on there for us, find us
- 8:15Speaker 6: a couple of seats so we can watch even that
- 8:18Speaker 6: Subway series. That would be fantastic. Seat Geek has it
- 8:21Speaker 6: all there for you.
- 8:22Speaker 5: Yeah, and the code for you. You should know it.
- 8:24Speaker 5: It's Territory ten. It just gets you ten percent off
- 8:26Speaker 5: your next set of tickets. That's EKE ten percent off
- 8:29Speaker 5: any tickets with promo code Territory one zero. Make sure
- 8:32Speaker 5: you click the link in the description, download the app.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Then the code is automatically added to your account so
- 8:36Speaker 5: you can use it later.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Brad, you made an interesting point about Cowser so well
- 8:42Speaker 1: liked in there is clear the reaction of his teammates.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Sometimes that does tell us a little something. Not that
- 8:48Speaker 1: they wouldn't have a great reaction for any walk off wind. Yeah,
- 8:51Speaker 1: but these guys looked like it was, you know, Game
- 8:53Speaker 1: seven of the Alcs or something. So it's okay, it's
- 8:57Speaker 1: okay are your fans when you have a win like that,
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's okay to have fun for a few minutes. But
- 9:02Speaker 1: a bigger picture of Cawser is kind of the loose
- 9:05Speaker 1: guy in there a lot, and when he struggled the
- 9:07Speaker 1: last year or two, there's we've seen less of that
- 9:10Speaker 1: now the media we're not there for We're only there
- 9:12Speaker 1: fifty minutes, you know, before the game. There's hours. It's
- 9:15Speaker 1: stuff going on in there we don't see, And I
- 9:17Speaker 1: think he's probably still that same loose guy. It gets
- 9:20Speaker 1: harder to do that, I think when you're struggling. When
- 9:23Speaker 1: he was drafted, the area was drafted, they brought the
- 9:27Speaker 1: draft picks to del Marva from Florida and a bunch
- 9:30Speaker 1: of us drove all the way to Salisbury to interview him.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Never met Colton Kwser within the first thirty seconds of
- 9:37Speaker 1: He's like six or eight is cam mass and cameras
- 9:40Speaker 1: are all there. Maybe this kid will be nervous. He
- 9:42Speaker 1: looks into the camera and he goes, Hey, how's my
- 9:44Speaker 1: hair look? Do I look good today? And I was like,
- 9:48Speaker 1: this kid is loose man, he's just having fun. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: that was Colton Cawser. That is really who he is.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And so that can I hope for the Orioles means something.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, I think you're having guys like that in
- 10:01Speaker 2: the clubhouse. It's like you said, when you're struggling, it's
- 10:03Speaker 2: tough to be that guy all the time. But I
- 10:05Speaker 2: guarantee when the media is not in there, and these
- 10:08Speaker 2: guys have come up together, they've spent so much time together,
- 10:10Speaker 2: They've had success, they've had failure together, And I just
- 10:13Speaker 2: think he's just one of those guys that everybody pulls
- 10:15Speaker 2: for that you just can't help but like want to
- 10:17Speaker 2: be around him, want to see him do well, because
- 10:20Speaker 2: when he's doing well, everybody's more loose, and it's it's
- 10:23Speaker 2: a personality a Saulid Just like I said those couple
- 10:25Speaker 2: of times doing the series in twenty four to twenty five,
- 10:27Speaker 2: twenty three, it was just he was one of those
- 10:29Speaker 2: guys that everybody gravitates to that they want to joke
- 10:32Speaker 2: with they want to have a good time with and
- 10:34Speaker 2: that kind of personality is huge in a clubhouse. And
- 10:36Speaker 2: it would be great to see him get back to
- 10:38Speaker 2: having success and just get back to being that loose
- 10:40Speaker 2: guy that everybody saw a few years ago, because, like
- 10:43Speaker 2: I said, it is tougher to be that guy because
- 10:46Speaker 2: you have more eyes on you when you're not having
- 10:47Speaker 2: as much success. So to get him back to being
- 10:50Speaker 2: just that loose go out there, just have fun, hit
- 10:52Speaker 2: the ball and hit it hard whenever you get a chance.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Bred how important is that clubhouse dynamic? Because obviously you
- 11:00Speaker 3: don't want twenty a six Colden Cows. There's all these
- 11:04Speaker 3: guys crazy outgoing, but I just think of you know,
- 11:06Speaker 3: the Orioles twenty twelve through sixteen, Like you have a
- 11:10Speaker 3: serious guy like a nick Mark Cakis or a more
- 11:12Speaker 3: low key guy like JJ Hardy, but then Adam Jones
- 11:15Speaker 3: is pieing people and Chris Davis is a really funny guy.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Like, how important is that clubhouse dynamic?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, it's huge, And I think it's one of those
- 11:25Speaker 2: things that has kind of been lost the last few
- 11:27Speaker 2: years is they try to look at everything as a
- 11:30Speaker 2: number and as a how do we slot this guy
- 11:32Speaker 2: and how we sought that guy in and the club
- 11:35Speaker 2: the clubhouse, just personalities and the atmosphere is such a
- 11:39Speaker 2: big X factor that when you look at these teams winning,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you can tell the teammates that love being around each
- 11:45Speaker 2: other and love going to the field every day and
- 11:47Speaker 2: having guys like Cold in there and like Adam Jones
- 11:49Speaker 2: and Chris Davis, these guys that could just make it
- 11:52Speaker 2: easier over one sixty two game season, regardless of how
- 11:55Speaker 2: good or bad you're doing, it just makes it easier
- 11:57Speaker 2: to go to the ballpark. You have more fun and
- 11:59Speaker 2: you just you. It helps you to remind you that
- 12:02Speaker 2: we're here playing a kids game and at the end
- 12:03Speaker 2: of the day, just go out there, have fun, do
- 12:06Speaker 2: what you do best, and at the end of the day,
- 12:08Speaker 2: nobody will ever say anything bad about you because you're
- 12:10Speaker 2: just out there doing the best you can and you
- 12:12Speaker 2: enjoyed doing it.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Let's start starting pitching, and this stat snuck up on
- 12:19Speaker 1: me a little bit. But the last six games, the
- 12:22Speaker 1: rotation ERI is two seven to three. Now that includes
- 12:26Speaker 1: an opener, but I have three quality starts in six games,
- 12:29Speaker 1: which is really five. You can't count it opener. You're
- 12:31Speaker 1: not gonna get the quality start. So that's a start
- 12:35Speaker 1: of something here. You need much more than that. But
- 12:38Speaker 1: boz is starting to go bradish to twenty two era,
- 12:41Speaker 1: last four, really good, yesterday, young all year. Now, who's
- 12:46Speaker 1: going to be the fourth or fifth to really get
- 12:49Speaker 1: this thing? Humming?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that's kind of the key. I've
- 12:53Speaker 2: kind of mentioned before that when the starting rotation, you
- 12:55Speaker 2: want to see one time through the rotation everybody put up,
- 12:58Speaker 2: even if it's not a quality start, just a good
- 13:00Speaker 2: start to get the team off to a good start.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And they've kind of done that here the last six starts,
- 13:05Speaker 2: I think six six seven starts, it's been good getting
- 13:09Speaker 2: zero's up on the board, giving the offensive chance to
- 13:11Speaker 2: get into the game. And that's kind of what we
- 13:13Speaker 2: haven't seen over a stretch of six games so far
- 13:16Speaker 2: to this point in the season. And Kyle Bradis is
- 13:18Speaker 2: kind of turning into that ace that we thought and
- 13:20Speaker 2: he's been really really impressive his last four. He's kind
- 13:23Speaker 2: of giving you that stopper if they lose two or
- 13:25Speaker 2: three in a row with him starting, you feel like
- 13:27Speaker 2: he can jump start the starting rotation and get this
- 13:30Speaker 2: team back on track. It's been really impressive to watch,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and I think they're they're kind of getting into a
- 13:35Speaker 2: little bit of a group here, and I'd love to
- 13:36Speaker 2: see you continue another time through the rotation and then
- 13:39Speaker 2: from there you just never know. They can go on
- 13:40Speaker 2: a three week stretch of really really good starts.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Yeh, Steve, you got the stat up right there. Kyle Bradish,
- 13:46Speaker 3: over his last four starts, he's been unbelievable. And even
- 13:50Speaker 3: when you look at it from a season perspective, prior
- 13:53Speaker 3: to this four game stretch getting ERA over five, now
- 13:57Speaker 3: his ERA is in the threes, which is really really
- 14:00Speaker 3: great to see. And like you were saying, Brad Bradish
- 14:04Speaker 3: when he's going well like he is now, he is
- 14:07Speaker 3: one of those guys you expect the Orioles to win
- 14:10Speaker 3: every time he goes out. And yesterday was a pitchers
- 14:14Speaker 3: duel early on in that game, and look, when Bradish
- 14:17Speaker 3: gave up the home run, you're thinking, oh my gosh,
- 14:19Speaker 3: one to nothing against McClanahan, and the offense is really scuffling,
- 14:22Speaker 3: like they might be done at this point, but the
- 14:25Speaker 3: Orioles were able to continue to battle. Bradish was able
- 14:27Speaker 3: to give them length, giving them his third quality start
- 14:31Speaker 3: in his last four outings. Like you said, Shane Bose,
- 14:34Speaker 3: he is definitely trending in a positive direction. Brandon Young
- 14:37Speaker 3: has been rock steady. Now it's just about getting Trevor Rodgers, right,
- 14:42Speaker 3: I mean, that's got to be the big thing. And look,
- 14:44Speaker 3: we haven't had an update on Dean Kramer in a while,
- 14:47Speaker 3: but maybe we see him come back in the month
- 14:51Speaker 3: of June. I know, the last time Michael IIAs talked
- 14:53Speaker 3: about that that was the end of April set several
- 14:56Speaker 3: weeks at that point.
- 14:58Speaker 4: But Kramer this point, and you know.
- 15:00Speaker 3: It's high highs and low lows, but you know, as
- 15:03Speaker 3: Era is always going to be around four at the
- 15:05Speaker 3: end of the season, and I think that that would
- 15:08Speaker 3: be a welcome addition at this point to the staff.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and we hadn't mentioned Chris Bassett, who obviously can
- 15:15Speaker 1: be pitching a little better and was expected to. So
- 15:20Speaker 1: the rotation looked like it was potential plus here an
- 15:23Speaker 1: opening day and so we haven't seen that, but maybe
- 15:26Speaker 1: in the last week we had and so Trevor Rodgers
- 15:29Speaker 1: getting it goen would be big. There were some things
- 15:31Speaker 1: to like from that last start and not like so
- 15:34Speaker 1: we were saying on the show the other day. Hard
- 15:36Speaker 1: to read into what exactly is going to happen here,
- 15:39Speaker 1: but maybe he turned the corner. And so I do
- 15:42Speaker 1: give the Orioles points for resiliency, and no one is
- 15:46Speaker 1: selling three and one as they turned the season around.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Not close to that. But if you're going to turn
- 15:52Speaker 1: the season around, it has to start with something like
- 15:54Speaker 1: three and one.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what, Steve two. Watching the game initially,
- 15:58Speaker 2: Jim Palmer made a great point that I had to
- 15:59Speaker 2: know this. He talked about Ali Rutchman holding his target
- 16:03Speaker 2: a little bit longer, and after hearing him bringing up
- 16:06Speaker 2: that point, I'm thinking of the starters. Kind of the
- 16:09Speaker 2: struggle was pitched strike one and Kyle Braddish especially was
- 16:12Speaker 2: really struggling with strike one. Ali Rushman is really holding
- 16:15Speaker 2: his target longer, which was kind of what guys did
- 16:17Speaker 2: when I was playing, and I love that. When they
- 16:19Speaker 2: started going to the sweep up motion, it got really
- 16:22Speaker 2: hard for me to kind of know where my target
- 16:24Speaker 2: is and what I'm trying to aim at. But these guys,
- 16:26Speaker 2: he's been really holding target just it's it's a very
- 16:30Speaker 2: it's a short period longer, but it's noticeably longer. And
- 16:33Speaker 2: I've been noticing Kyle braddis being able to get in
- 16:35Speaker 2: the zone, especially with his fastball super early in the counts,
- 16:39Speaker 2: and I really think that's been his turnarounds, just being
- 16:41Speaker 2: more aggressive of strike one, using his fastball to get ahead,
- 16:44Speaker 2: and then getting to his off speed pitches and yes
- 16:46Speaker 2: should I also noticed he kind of flipped his slider
- 16:49Speaker 2: and curveball usage from his last two stars, and I
- 16:51Speaker 2: think that's always so interesting as a player watching how
- 16:54Speaker 2: a guy is going to go and faces a team
- 16:57Speaker 2: two starts in a row, and what he does with
- 16:59Speaker 2: the stuff that's seen you within a week. There's no surprises,
- 17:03Speaker 2: there's not going to be anything that's thrown your way
- 17:05Speaker 2: that you haven't seen. But he flipped his curveball in
- 17:07Speaker 2: slider usage, and I thought that was really really amazing
- 17:10Speaker 2: yesterday to watch he kind of didn't abandon the slider,
- 17:13Speaker 2: but he didn't throw his first slider, I think until
- 17:14Speaker 2: the third or fourth inning, and then he used it
- 17:16Speaker 2: from there. But he threw almost double the amount of
- 17:19Speaker 2: curveballs he threw from the last start to yesterday's start,
- 17:22Speaker 2: and it really had them off balance. They were kind
- 17:24Speaker 2: of looking for the sweeper coming at him as a
- 17:25Speaker 2: left ear away and he was just throwing a lot
- 17:27Speaker 2: more twelve to six and it really kept them off
- 17:29Speaker 2: balanced that entire start.
- 17:31Speaker 3: In those type of situations, Brad, do you see that
- 17:34Speaker 3: as more advantage batter advantage pitcher?
- 17:38Speaker 4: Seeing someone that quick within a week.
- 17:41Speaker 2: I gotta think it's advantage batter. I think just like
- 17:44Speaker 2: I said, you see the shape. There's no the last start,
- 17:47Speaker 2: you kind of get in your second and third at bat,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you've seen it all, and now it's like within a
- 17:52Speaker 2: week you maybe face three pitches I think five pitchers
- 17:55Speaker 2: in between his start, so you haven't seen a ton,
- 17:57Speaker 2: but you've seen everything. He threw a hunt over a
- 18:00Speaker 2: hundred pitches the last start, and he threw ninety something there,
- 18:02Speaker 2: and it just goes to show how good Kyle Bradish
- 18:04Speaker 2: can be with his stuff. It doesn't matter if you
- 18:06Speaker 2: face him back to back starts, it doesn't matter if
- 18:08Speaker 2: you've seen him three or four times that outing. He
- 18:10Speaker 2: just has. He has elite stuff, and his fastballs to me,
- 18:13Speaker 2: have just been the difference maker. His two seamen is
- 18:15Speaker 2: cutter cutter, four seamer as he calls it. The h
- 18:19Speaker 2: is really the difference maker to me because then he
- 18:20Speaker 2: gets his breaking ball and there's just you're not going
- 18:22Speaker 2: to do much damage.
- 18:23Speaker 1: With that, you know. I love a good pitcher's duel
- 18:27Speaker 1: McClanahan and Bradish. That is fun to watch, and of
- 18:29Speaker 1: course the craziness at the end was a different kind
- 18:32Speaker 1: of fun to watch. We almost got two games in
- 18:34Speaker 1: one day as the Orioles got an important victory on
- 18:39Speaker 1: Monday afternoon at Camden Yards. There is presented by Fan
- 18:46Speaker 1: Dole and okay, here's a little bit of an outside
- 18:50Speaker 1: the box nomination to hit one Taylor Ward. He's only
- 18:54Speaker 1: hit two all year, we know, But the pitcher he's
- 18:56Speaker 1: facing Tuesday night. Oh, by the way, Griffin Jacks. He
- 18:59Speaker 1: homered against at the Trap and if you remember, it
- 19:01Speaker 1: was a leadoff homer. It seemed to be a pitch
- 19:04Speaker 1: he was hunting because he was way out in front
- 19:06Speaker 1: of ninety six. It seemed that in his mind it
- 19:09Speaker 1: was like, if I get one here, I'm getting that
- 19:11Speaker 1: bad head out and I'm gonna drive one for a change.
- 19:14Speaker 1: And he did. And if he can do it, then
- 19:17Speaker 1: maybe he can do it more. We know his track
- 19:19Speaker 1: record says he can do it more. But it's just
- 19:23Speaker 1: strange to see a guy with thirty six homers have
- 19:27Speaker 1: just two. He's got one hundred games to go, so
- 19:30Speaker 1: I don't think he's getting thirty six this year. But
- 19:33Speaker 1: I don't think he's only going to hit six or
- 19:34Speaker 1: eight either.
- 19:35Speaker 2: How about you guys, Yeah, I think at this point
- 19:38Speaker 2: with that many games left, I mean there, I can't
- 19:40Speaker 2: imagine twenty twenty five. You know, It's it's just hitters.
- 19:43Speaker 2: They get so hot and they get they go through stretches,
- 19:47Speaker 2: and I really think the wristhand when he got hit,
- 19:50Speaker 2: I think that ended up being really what has sat
- 19:52Speaker 2: this power to there's at this power to this point,
- 19:54Speaker 2: and I think he's being more aggressive, which tells me
- 19:57Speaker 2: that he's starting to get more of an idea of
- 19:59Speaker 2: what he's he's trying to drive. When you're seeing more pitches,
- 20:02Speaker 2: to me, it kind of you're trying to get more
- 20:04Speaker 2: into the count, trying to get pitches to maybe hit
- 20:06Speaker 2: the other way, just trying to get something that you
- 20:08Speaker 2: can get the offense kind of rolling. But when you're
- 20:11Speaker 2: going and hunting swing earlier in the count, that tells
- 20:13Speaker 2: me you have a better idea of what you're trying
- 20:15Speaker 2: to do to hit for more power. I think that
- 20:17Speaker 2: was when I was pitching, when I see guys swinging
- 20:19Speaker 2: early in the count, they're they're trying to go deep in.
- 20:22Speaker 2: When you're you get later in the count, they're more
- 20:25Speaker 2: willing to kind of take to hit the other way
- 20:26Speaker 2: or kind of hits what is pitched to them. But
- 20:29Speaker 2: when you're out there hunting earlier, that just goes to
- 20:31Speaker 2: tell me he's feeling better and he's really trying to
- 20:34Speaker 2: get out in front of pitches and kind of put
- 20:35Speaker 2: a good swing and a home run swing on pitches.
- 20:40Speaker 3: Yeah, We've talked a lot about Taylor Ward's season and
- 20:43Speaker 3: just how it's so bizarre.
- 20:46Speaker 4: Right even with him.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Slumping a little bit of late, he still hasn't on
- 20:51Speaker 3: base of over four hundred, which is fantastic. But this
- 20:54Speaker 3: is someone even if you throw out last year the
- 20:57Speaker 3: career best season with the thirty six homers, three of
- 21:00Speaker 3: his prior four seasons he had twenty three homers or more. So,
- 21:04Speaker 3: he has that in him and you're just waiting to
- 21:07Speaker 3: see it. But you're right, Brad, I feel like he
- 21:10Speaker 3: has been much more aggressive of laid and with him
- 21:12Speaker 3: changing that bandage er if you will, casing around his hand,
- 21:18Speaker 3: maybe that's kind of given him a little bit more
- 21:20Speaker 3: confidence as well. But those type of hand injuries, man,
- 21:23Speaker 3: they're just so serious and gosh, Jackson Holiday kind of
- 21:27Speaker 3: a perfect example. Obviously it's not a handmade injury with
- 21:30Speaker 3: Taylor Ward, but anytime a hitter takes a pitch off
- 21:34Speaker 3: his hand, man, I just can't even imagine, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 3: going back the next day continuing, you're taking four appats
- 21:41Speaker 3: a day swinging at a pitch that's ninety six ninety seven, Like,
- 21:44Speaker 3: oh my gosh, I can't even imagine that pain.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Oh yeah, So he hits one against Griffin Jacks last time.
- 21:51Speaker 1: We'll see what he does here the rest of this series.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Here's an interesting note on Ward. He does not show
- 21:57Speaker 1: good batspeed, and he never has. Some peoples have said
- 22:00Speaker 1: to me, Steve, look at his bat speed this year.
- 22:02Speaker 1: It's in the lower four percent of major leagues. Last
- 22:05Speaker 1: year was in the lower fifteen percent. You get thirty
- 22:09Speaker 1: six homers with eighty five percent of major league hitters
- 22:12Speaker 1: possessing more bat speed last year. So that is not
- 22:16Speaker 1: his game. The record shows as that. So he can
- 22:19Speaker 1: hit homers without prolific batspeed. He's done it before. So
- 22:23Speaker 1: we'll see if Taylor Ward can get one for the
- 22:26Speaker 1: Orioles sitting on two here our daily Dinger segment. Head

- 22:57Speaker 1: Tim, we were talking before the show. You noted the
- 23:00Speaker 1: renovation for cedric moments. This is my mind a great
- 23:04Speaker 1: Oriole thirty thirty, the only oriol to ever do that,
- 23:08Speaker 1: by the way, with all the great stave ad and
- 23:12Speaker 1: a guy was demoted at one time to double A
- 23:14Speaker 1: and I went and interviewed him that year in Bowie
- 23:18Speaker 1: and he looked me in the eye and said, I'm
- 23:19Speaker 1: going to be back. I promise you I'm straightening some
- 23:22Speaker 1: things out. And he came back to be thirty thirty.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I mean, this is a special guy.
- 23:28Speaker 3: Just an unbelievable story. When you think about that, Steve.
- 23:32Speaker 3: This is someone that came up at the end of
- 23:34Speaker 3: the twenty eighteen season. It was so cool seeing that
- 23:37Speaker 3: tribute video that the Orioles did for him, and remember
- 23:40Speaker 3: Adam Jones letting him lead the team out of the
- 23:43Speaker 3: dugout and obviously him taking over center field from Adam
- 23:46Speaker 3: and Adam of course ack of an Oriole himself, but said,
- 23:51Speaker 3: you's think of the just the defensive plays.
- 23:54Speaker 4: That he made.
- 23:54Speaker 8: I know the game in Seattle, Brad, you're on the
- 23:58Speaker 8: call of that one where he's robing the holme and
- 24:00Speaker 8: then he's hitting the go ahead home run, you know,
- 24:02Speaker 8: at the bottom half through the top half of the
- 24:05Speaker 8: next inning.
- 24:07Speaker 4: This was someone that.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Was there throughout the entire rebuild, right like right at
- 24:11Speaker 3: the end of the teardown of eighteen and then having
- 24:15Speaker 3: the thirty thirty season in twenty one, and then part
- 24:18Speaker 3: of the rebirth where the team winning one hundred and
- 24:21Speaker 3: one games in twenty twenty three. Cedric Mullins was a
- 24:25Speaker 3: humongous part of all of that and absolutely deserve that
- 24:30Speaker 3: standing ill yesterday.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Yeah, it was great to see anytime a guy comes
- 24:34Speaker 2: back that spent that much time and I mean his
- 24:37Speaker 2: story with you know, talking about him getting sent down
- 24:39Speaker 2: was almost the trajectory that that whole thing went on.
- 24:42Speaker 2: It's you had you know eighteen happened and the struggles
- 24:45Speaker 2: that just kind of happened of the whole organization for
- 24:48Speaker 2: that five six year period. But then he's back there
- 24:51Speaker 2: being one of the key parts of the team that
- 24:53Speaker 2: wins the division one hundred games. It's just it's a
- 24:55Speaker 2: great story. And that that call in Seattle, that was
- 24:58Speaker 2: one of the coolest things I've seen. I know, I
- 25:00Speaker 2: had known said just he was a guy that came
- 25:02Speaker 2: up all the time and got defensive innings when Buck
- 25:05Speaker 2: was the manager and I was on the team, and
- 25:07Speaker 2: we had always heard about him. This kid could play
- 25:09Speaker 2: great defense. They were just wondering when the offense was
- 25:11Speaker 2: going to come around. But just being there on that
- 25:14Speaker 2: call and having him come lit in that game late,
- 25:16Speaker 2: makes an unbelievable catch to save the game, then goes
- 25:18Speaker 2: out hits a home run. He had a home run
- 25:20Speaker 2: foul in that at bat, and then hit a home
- 25:22Speaker 2: run fair in the same pat I was like, I
- 25:24Speaker 2: was at shock and I felt bad. I kind of
- 25:27Speaker 2: jumped over Kevin when I was like yelling in the mic.
- 25:30Speaker 2: It was just it was just cool. It was it
- 25:31Speaker 2: was such a as a baseball fan my whole life
- 25:34Speaker 2: watching something like that happen and getting to be on
- 25:36Speaker 2: that call in a big series out there in Seattle
- 25:38Speaker 2: against a team that was really good. We saw unbelievable
- 25:41Speaker 2: starting pitching from Seattle, and for said to go out
- 25:43Speaker 2: there and just do that, it was just kind of
- 25:45Speaker 2: like it was just a cool full circle thing watching
- 25:47Speaker 2: him in the minor leagues and then getting to be
- 25:49Speaker 2: on the call when he's one of the bigger names
- 25:51Speaker 2: on the team, and just it was a great story.
- 25:54Speaker 2: And it was great to see him get his due
- 25:55Speaker 2: yesterday at Camdon Yards and get a great standing ovation because,
- 25:58Speaker 2: like you said, he was really really good Oriol And
- 26:00Speaker 2: to hear the fact that he was the only thirty
- 26:02Speaker 2: to thirty player in Oriel's history, it's just kind of
- 26:05Speaker 2: mind blown, like you said, with I mean multiple Hall
- 26:07Speaker 2: of Famers and just unbelievable players that have come through
- 26:09Speaker 2: Baltimore that he's the only one with that stat. It's
- 26:12Speaker 2: just it was great to see him out the Yeshay
- 26:14Speaker 2: and get that ovation like he did, because he really
- 26:15Speaker 2: did deserve something like that.
- 26:18Speaker 1: Man, I think of a character integrity class. That's what
- 26:21Speaker 1: I think I want to think of Cedric. He as
- 26:23Speaker 1: a fan of a team. You hope your team is good,
- 26:26Speaker 1: and he won a lot of games, obviously. I think secondarily,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you hope you have a bunch of good guys who
- 26:31Speaker 1: represent your team in town. Well, Cedric Mullins did it
- 26:34Speaker 1: beautifully for many years, so said, welcome back to Baltimore
- 26:39Speaker 1: with the Raids. We got a few more things to
- 26:40Speaker 1: do here on Birdland Territory.

- 27:02Speaker 1: Brad shang Bos goes Tuesday night for the Orioles. It
- 27:05Speaker 1: looks like knocking on wood here for him. He's turned
- 27:07Speaker 1: the corner a bit. Are you seeing signs of that?
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah? Absolutely, I think he's looking more like the pitcher
- 27:14Speaker 2: they hope they signed, and that they signed to an
- 27:16Speaker 2: extension here these last few starts, just giving them length
- 27:20Speaker 2: and giving them just unbelievable outings. He's been He's been
- 27:23Speaker 2: really good and it's been fun. To watch. It's been
- 27:26Speaker 2: kind of impressive to watch him kind of just flip
- 27:28Speaker 2: the script on his season these last few starts. Hopefully,
- 27:31Speaker 2: obviously you hope he can continue this stretch he's on,
- 27:33Speaker 2: but it's a picture that they hoped and I hope
- 27:36Speaker 2: to see him go out there again tonight. It's not
- 27:38Speaker 2: easy task. Like we talked about, Braddis did a great
- 27:40Speaker 2: job facing the same team twice. He has the added
- 27:43Speaker 2: pressure of facing former teammates and his former team now
- 27:46Speaker 2: two starts in a row. So it's definitely a tough
- 27:49Speaker 2: challenge tonight against a team that didn't score a lot
- 27:51Speaker 2: of runs against the starter last night, a team that
- 27:53Speaker 2: puts up runs and puts up good at bats. So
- 27:55Speaker 2: it's gonna be a really fun challenge. And I always
- 27:58Speaker 2: love seeing guys get a challenge like this really step
- 28:00Speaker 2: up to the occasion. It would be great to see
- 28:02Speaker 2: that as go out there tonight and just do what
- 28:04Speaker 2: he did last week. And at the TRUP he.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Was fantastic, and that started against the Trump. I believe
- 28:09Speaker 3: he only gave up two hits there. But that's kind
- 28:12Speaker 3: of an added layer with it, Brad. When you think
- 28:15Speaker 3: of former teammates and like they kind of know the
- 28:18Speaker 3: ins and outs with you as a pitcher as well.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Like it's kind of an interesting dynamic there too, going
- 28:25Speaker 3: up against your former team as a pitcher even more so.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely. I think Ben McDonald talked about that last
- 28:31Speaker 2: week on the broadcast. He just said, it's not easy
- 28:33Speaker 2: your first time, so it'll be interesting if like the
- 28:36Speaker 2: emotions are kind of gone and like he got that
- 28:38Speaker 2: first one out of the way, if he goes out
- 28:40Speaker 2: and who knows, he could be even more dominant this time.
- 28:41Speaker 2: It's just it's definitely tough facing your former team and
- 28:45Speaker 2: those guys know everything about you. The pitching coaches are
- 28:47Speaker 2: still there. All the analytics and the data is all there.
- 28:50Speaker 2: They've seen this guy multiple times. He was a minor
- 28:53Speaker 2: league guy with the Race too, I believe, so it's
- 28:56Speaker 2: they He was there his entire career. So it's going
- 28:59Speaker 2: to be a challenge tonight for sure. And the Race
- 29:01Speaker 2: team has been hot. They beat him yesterday and hopefully
- 29:03Speaker 2: can go out and they can take the series and
- 29:05Speaker 2: look for sweep tomorrow. And it's just one of those
- 29:09Speaker 2: huge opportunities I feel like, to finally carry the momentum
- 29:12Speaker 2: of a big win into today and kind of just
- 29:15Speaker 2: grasp the season and kind of turn it around here.
- 29:18Speaker 2: You know, you just never know what can happen if
- 29:19Speaker 2: they can win tonight.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yes, is this finally the time for Birdland to make
- 29:25Speaker 1: the run you've been waiting on for weeks? You know,
- 29:27Speaker 1: you think about the Oriols and the Rays. It should
- 29:29Speaker 1: be too too. The O's let a game get away.
- 29:32Speaker 1: They got blown out in that first game at the
- 29:33Speaker 1: trop but then they were down a run at the
- 29:35Speaker 1: very end of the game, lost by three Tuesday night. Wednesday,
- 29:39Speaker 1: should have won up by two in the athletic get
- 29:42Speaker 1: away and did win on Monday. So they've really been
- 29:45Speaker 1: good games here since the first few innings of the
- 29:48Speaker 1: first game. Os and Rays and Tim. That would be
- 29:51Speaker 1: an uplifting series win.
- 29:54Speaker 4: That's all you're looking for.
- 29:55Speaker 3: It's what we were saying Sunday, Like, it was far
- 29:59Speaker 3: from a pretty series against the Tigers, but you took
- 30:01Speaker 3: two of three. Now you got to find a way
- 30:03Speaker 3: to split today tomorrow that way win another series and
- 30:07Speaker 3: then the Blue Jays come to town for four, find
- 30:09Speaker 3: a way to at least split that series. Like they
- 30:12Speaker 3: just got to start stacking series wins that they've only
- 30:15Speaker 3: won back to back series just once all year.
- 30:17Speaker 4: They have a chance to make it too tonight.
- 30:20Speaker 1: Yeah, real, go ahead, Brad.
- 30:22Speaker 2: I was just gonna say, at this point, it's like,
- 30:24Speaker 2: throw pretty wins out the win as a win at
- 30:27Speaker 2: this point, and like, I mean that win, the runs
- 30:29Speaker 2: they scored early in that game. That kind of looked
- 30:31Speaker 2: like those defense a little bit there early in this season,
- 30:33Speaker 2: throwing balls in the dugout, making errors, given extra bases,
- 30:36Speaker 2: and the orders took advantage of it. So it's kind of,
- 30:39Speaker 2: who knows, maybe that kind of is shifting their luck
- 30:41Speaker 2: a little bit. And at this point, it's pretty wins
- 30:44Speaker 2: don't matter. It's all about getting w's and just like
- 30:46Speaker 2: you said, stacking series wins series wins.
- 30:48Speaker 1: It's a good point. Rays haven't had a four ERA
- 30:50Speaker 1: games since twenty twenty one. That was also against the Orioles.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Oh by the way, and again knock on wood here,
- 30:56Speaker 1: there haven't been a lot of defensive meltdowns or missed
- 31:00Speaker 1: There have been a few. The p Alonzo played the
- 31:02Speaker 1: other day comes to mind, but the Orioles are starting
- 31:05Speaker 1: to slowly clean it up on the D. So let's
- 31:07Speaker 1: see how the series plays out. Hope you enjoy it
- 31:10Speaker 1: oriole fans at the yard, Ozen raised, and then Toronto
- 31:13Speaker 1: in for the rest of the homestead. We will be
- 31:16Speaker 1: back soon with another edition of Birdland Territory.
