- 0:30SPEAKER_00: The path to becoming good at something involves disappointments, setbacks and failures.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Without resilience, you give up because carrying on feels too hard, too painful.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: With some resilience, you go a lot further.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: With a lot of resilience, you reach tough demanding goals that you set yourself.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: From personal experience, leading others is hard.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: It is a tough job, both professionally and personally.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I think you have to build resilience for leadership success.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: What I'm sharing today will give you multiple paths or routes to making all the challenges, setbacks, disappointments, and failures feel a lot less daunting and be less painful.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: The more you work at building your personal resilience, the quicker, and the more positively you will bounce back from failures, disappointments, critical feedback, and more.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Resilience transforms leaders and their career prospects.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Firstly, resilient people don't expect to have an easy life, don't expect life without challenge, without risk, without getting hurt.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: They are more resilient because they are more emotionally and intellectually prepared when the tough times come round, and they will come round.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: If you choose to go for management and leadership roles, you'll have more tough times than most.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: You'll have great ideas shot down because of vested interests.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: You'll get undeserved criticism.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Your team and colleagues will give you a hard time at some point.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Weaker managers will get promoted ahead of you.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It's a very long list.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: When you have a mindset of positively expecting trouble, at some point, when the tough times do happen, you do not feel victimised, singled out, or discriminated against.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Having a positive mindset and approach to the tough times means you learn lessons quicker and you get yourself out of the hole you find yourself in much quicker.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: The speed factor is very important for your long-term success and your happiness.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Another key reason you need resilience for leading teams.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: My parents divorced when I was six, my father left the country and I rarely heard from him.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: His lack of actions communicated to my six-year-old brain that I was not valuable, not important to him, not worth his time.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: I felt totally rejected by one of the most important people in my life at the time.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: I found myself in a very big hole early in life, and it took me many years to get out of it.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: There are many reasons I did get out of my hole.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: One of the most important is that I kept focused on the positive things in life.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: When you are down, it is really easy to focus on the negatives that got you where you are.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: The brain is a brilliant filter.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: You think and feel what you focus on.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: Focus on the negatives and you feel terrible, you get stuck and things get worse.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Focus as much as you can on the positives in your life and you maintain a more balanced view of the world.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: With more positivity, you take more actions, you do more, which in turn makes you feel better about yourself and the situation.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: You start climbing rather than sinking.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: A great exercise to build manager resilience.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: At the end of every day, write down in a dedicated notebook at least three good things that have happened that day.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Keep looking for the good things until you have written at least three down.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Be specific, be detailed, then look over the previous day's entries and further back as you want to.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Make the time to pat yourself on the back for all the good stuff that you have done.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: This is a brilliant exercise for finding and focusing on the positives.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Do this exercise every day.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Remember, resilience transform leaders and their careers.

- 4:56SPEAKER_00: The second very important mental approach to building resilience is to keep focused on the long term rather than the short term.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Getting good at something doesn't happen overnight.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: It takes time and disappointments.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: You try something and it doesn't really work.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: You do something a little bit different.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: You keep going through this cycle until you get a good result.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Then you do more and more of X, whatever gave you that good result, until the results start becoming great.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: When you are focused on becoming great, i.e.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: making a long-term goal, it is much easier to get over the disappointments, failures and setbacks.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: When you know you might need to fail 20 times before you become successful, then the first failure is just one step of 20 steps to success.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Adopting this mindset means it doesn't feel as personal, as raw, as painful.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: If you're only focused on the first failure, then that failure becomes everything.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: You feel you have failed rather than taking your first step to success.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: This difference in focus and mindset is huge.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: To even get to a management position, you have to go through quite a bit of disappointment, failure, and learning.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: When you start a management position, everything gets magnified.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: There are more hits, there is suddenly a lot more to learn, and you have less time to learn it.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: You need leadership resilience at work to keep coming back for more and to get past all the disappointments before you start getting really good at leading.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Focus as much as possible on your goals and on the long term, not spend time looking at the speed bumps that you're going to hit on the way.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: This will help you right now and is a great way to build resilience for leaders over time and be successful quicker.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I know from personal experience that resilience transforms leaders and their career prospects, so please put the effort into building leader resilience at work.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: A third route to building resilience is to have positive cheerleaders in your life.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: When you face problems, setbacks, disasters, etc.
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: on your own, it is very daunting.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: It is harder to overcome these challenges on your own.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: When you have friends, families, partners, anyone that cares about you and celebrates you, overcoming the tough stuff is ten times easier.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Talk to those who care about you, share your problems, frustrations, anger, pain, etc.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: A problem shared is a problem halved.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Other people give you a realistic perspective.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: They can drag you out of the mental hole that you're in.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: They can realistically sing your praises, point out all the good stuff that you have going on, and ask questions that get you moving and taking action to help yourself.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: I personally would not have overcome a lot of the hurdles in my life without an amazing family and amazing friends around me that I could lean on when I need it.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I.e., if I had tried to overcome my challenges entirely on my own, it would have taken me a lot longer and I may never have got there.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: If you don't have these types of relationships with family, friends, etc., then get a mentor, a coach, a therapist, anyone who helps you see the positives and adds a realistic perspective to you.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: When things are tough, having people around you who care, who are positive for you, are worth many times their weight in gold to you.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Having positive cheerleaders in your life makes a massive difference to how well and how quickly you build personal resilience at work and in life.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: The more resilience you have, the quicker you will be able to get over all the disappointments and setbacks you will face.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: This helps you get better quicker.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: The fourth, to build resilience, keep asking yourself, does this help me?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Humans are creatures of habit, yet our brains easily fall into patterns so they spend less energy and enable them to cope with all the things they have to do in a given day.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: These patterns can be dangerous, particularly when they don't help us get over disappointment, disaster, etc.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: that we face.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Whenever you find yourself repeating the same thoughts or reinforcing a particular outlook or reaction, ask yourself, does me doing this help me?
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: If the answer is no, then work hard at figuring out a more positive version that creates a better outcome for you personally.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: A very simple example.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Your boss tells you you've made a mess up and what you did was disappointing and not up to the standards I expect of you.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Your boss delivered this very bluntly without the context of the situation being considered.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I've certainly been there before.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: It would be really easy to get defensive, put together a long list of reasons why you did what you did, and to dwell on the negative feedback.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: I've done this too.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: It wasn't useful to me.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: I switched my thinking to what do I need to do differently next time so my boss doesn't perceive that I messed up.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Keep asking yourself, does my assumption, reaction or thought process help me?
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Be brutally honest with yourself as much as you can be.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: If what you're doing is not helping you, then choose a different route.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: You can choose.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: You are in charge of yourself.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Choose the most positive, beneficial route for yourself and do this as consistently as you can, even if it doesn't feel very easy at the time.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: This is another great way to build resilience for management success over time.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Remember, resilience transforms leaders and their career prospects.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: In summary, building resilience and successful coping mechanisms for what life throws in your way is essential to get good at anything.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: If you want to enter or are in the management ranks, then being a lot more resilient than the average person is a must for success, in my opinion.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Being resilient means that you pick yourself up and dust yourself off much quicker and more effectively than a less resilient person.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: The speed of recovery means you learn quicker and get good or great much quicker.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Gaining resilience creates a huge advantage over colleagues that are not as resilient.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: I know from personal experience, 13 promotions all the way up to board level.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Build resilience to be a successful manager.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: To increase the performance of your team and build promotion-winning management expertise months to years faster.
