- 1:01SPEAKER_00: We are four-pointing this class.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like we're gonna four-point this semester, and it's gonna be great.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, trust me, next week you're gonna be like, okay, what do we gotta get on the final exam to pass the class?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh, that will change.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, the the T Dub uh pioneers are in the room.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Come on, let's get them.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: You guys just moved in.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Hey, T Dub represent.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Come on.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: I love that.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Um, but you guys man just moved in and just hanging.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, uh you got to say hi to uh some of the ladies uh here on campus.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: But hey, first, uh before we get in uh to the night, can I just like see who's in the room tonight?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I think it's gonna be uh a great way just to welcome people back uh to campus, to solo company.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So, guys, if we got any first time subcompany attenders in the room, come on, come make some noise.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: First time, yes, here we go.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Certainly, certainly.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Man, let's go.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, what about the other side of the room?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And who's coming back?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Who's the returner?
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Who's the subcompany last year, baby?
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, big one.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Hey, do we have any seniors in the room?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Anybody graduating this year?
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: Okay, baby, you know, yes, yes, we're certainly there.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Guys, trust me, I believe in you guys so much.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: April is on the horizon, okay?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: ChatGPT is like stronger and better than it's ever been.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So you guys can do it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Trust me, I believe in you.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: And then lastly, guys, here's what uh I want to do I'm gonna welcome a very special group uh of people into the room tonight.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Uh man, these uh these people, man, they got so much life in their eyes, so much passion in what they're doing.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: They got big expectations uh for their life.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: And you can kind of see them from a mile away on campus by the lanyard that's coming out of their right pockets.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Uh, can we welcome the class of 2030 into the room tonight?
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Come on, the Frenchman.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: Trust me, guys, uh, few better places uh to be on a Thursday night uh than in this room.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: So, but I also know that there are plenty of other places that you could be.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So I just want to say thank you for trusting us with your evening uh on this Thursday uh night.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Man, I don't know how you guys learned about Salt Company.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Maybe someone approached you on campus, they gave you a flyer, maybe you joined a Sasquatch hunt that was going around campus, or you somehow found yourself in a kiddie pool full of pancake batter.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Uh I know uh that you are in this room for uh a reason.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So I'm hoping to make uh the most of it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: And I just want to say welcome, so glad uh that you guys are here.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: We already uh saw, I know there's plenty of people who have no idea uh what salt company uh is about.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Um so tonight, here's what I want to do.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: I want to give you guys just a taste of what salt company is, what we do every week, what we believe, and what you might experience over the next year, hopefully the next four years uh for your time here and then at UNT or T Dub or NCTC.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's what I hope uh for tonight.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: I want to show you guys what it's like uh at a normal salt company because not every week do we have crazy parties, uh free t-shirts, or delicious cookies, but every week we do do one thing and we open up the Bible.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: We try to better understand the person and the work of Jesus Christ and apply it to our lives today.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Guys, that's what we're gonna do tonight.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And if you have your Bible, you can open it up.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: We're gonna be in the book of Luke tonight.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Gonna be in the book of Luke.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a Bible, don't worry.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: There's plenty of those apps on your phone, or you can look up on the screen.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: It's probably, you know, oh, I know for a fact, it's in the back half of your Bible.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Uh, you guys can get there.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: If you don't know where it is, ask your neighbor.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Um, but guys, if you've never read the book of Luke, basically this is what's happening, okay?
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Luke is this guy who knows Jesus.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: He's following Jesus around, he's a he's a friend, and he has the opportunity to write down and to see the things that Jesus has been doing in his life.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's walking around earth.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: There's people there's a big buzz about this dude named Jesus, and Luke is one of the guys that gets to witness it.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: This is how we get the book of Luke, a first eye count of what actually happened.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And in Luke 15, we get this story that we are about to read tonight.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, Jesus, I'll set the scene here uh for us a little bit.
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: He is talking with this large group of people in this room, but it's not just anybody.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, it's not just any group of people.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Because at the start of the chapter, at the start of Luke 15, it specifically says that Jesus was talking with the tax collectors, okay, the sinners, the Pharisees and the scribes.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Almost every single person was represented in this room.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Like on one side of the room, you've got all of the tax collectors and the sinners, okay?
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: People who were social outcasts.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: Nobody liked them.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Nobody wanted to be around them.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: One, because they took advantage of people for either money or or power or sex, whatever it is, people didn't like them.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: But then on the other hand, on the other hand, or the other side of the room, you had all the Pharisees and the scribes.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, the uh ultra-religious, elite people who thought that they were better than everyone else.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: They saw themselves as higher, better, uh more holy, whatever it is.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: And people also, no one liked them.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: So sorry, you guys are out, you guys are out, you guys are okay, I guess, you know?
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: But anyway, this is where we find ourselves tonight.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: And you can look with me in verse 11 of Luke 15.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: This is Jesus talking.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: He says, A man had two sons.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: The younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the share of the estate I have coming.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So he distributed the assets to them.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, so this is what we have so far.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: We know that there's two sons to this one uh wealthy man.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: And the younger of the sons, I mean, he goes to his father and he asks for his portion of the inheritance.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: Right now, this is probably something that none of us would ever think about doing.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: Seriously, never think about it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: Because we know that normally the inheritance is given when the father passes away.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, father passes away, bummer, we get all of his money.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, great.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: But what this son is doing here is actually a huge deal.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, something that uh it is crazy in the eyes of probably the people who are reading it and to us today.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Because basically, by asking for his inheritance, for asking what he uh his father's money, what he is saying is, hey, I can't wait until you die.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: I need your money now.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: I want it.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, I would rather have your money in my pocket than your presence in my life.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: This is what he's saying.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Like, man, how brutal is that?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Could you imagine standing in front of your father and being like, hey, uh, I don't love you anymore.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I only love you because you're money.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Certainly, I I can somewhat understand what this feels like uh because I went and watched the new Spider-Man movie, and it's like, man, when MJ told Peter, I don't love you, it's like right to the heart.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: I couldn't believe it.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I I was crying in the theater, okay?
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: If you haven't watched that movie yet, what are you doing?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: But seriously, what just happened to this father?
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Okay, yes, MJ telling Peter, hey, I don't love you, man, that was bad.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: This is a hundred times worse.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Saying, hey, I wish you were dead.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: And right, this whole conversation, this whole interaction, crazy.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: But what's even crazier is how the father reacts.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: You see what he does because man, he's willing to actually give over his wealth to his son.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: He gives him his portion of the inheritance and allows him to walk out the door, which is just even crazier.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Like, imagine if I'm doing this, it's like, Owen, I'm looking, probably getting to your room.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like this would never fly in my household.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: But the father, he looks at me, he says, Hey, you're an adult, you can do what you want.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Go learn.
- 8:13unknown: Right?
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: So this guy he takes his father's money, and we're gonna see how this works out for him.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Verse 13 is what it says.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: It says, Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all that he had and traveled to a distant country where he squandered his estates and foolish living.
- 8:29unknown: Right?
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Notice what it says here.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: It says that this younger son, man, he gathered everything that he had, right?
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Which says one thing.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: It says, I'm not coming back.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Okay, not coming back.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Very similar to what a bunch of you guys just did not too long ago.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, you packed up the U-Haul, you got dad to drive it, and it's like you open that thing up, things are spilling out, okay.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Girls, it's like you got your crazy comforters, your 15 throw pillows, uh, dudes, you have like uh your toilet paper and your toothbrush, and it's all all of your stuff in one U-Haul and you move out, okay?
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Here's the difference.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: This guy, he ain't coming home for Thanksgiving.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's not coming home for Christmas, which makes me think who's it who's doing this dude's laundry?
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, seriously, I go home when I was in uh undergrad, it's like, man, I'm living like a king, okay?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: I'm getting home cooked meals, mom's doing my laundry.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: I know if I need gas, that's going on dad's credit card, okay?
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm living like a king.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: I wanted to go home.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: This dude, none of that.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: None of that.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: This guy, we see that there's something bigger that's going on here.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: There's something deeper in this guy's heart that Jesus is trying to get the crowd to see, and I think he's trying to get us to see it too.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: You see, deep down, the heart of this younger son, there's something that's going on that's deeper than just a normal teenage rebellion or family drama.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I get it, family can be hard sometimes, but this goes deeper.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: This guy, he has got understanding in his own mind that what he really desires in life cannot be found in his family or the situation that he's in.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: But rather, he thinks that it's in his life, how he is gonna live out in the world, that's where satisfaction is gonna come from.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: In his mind, he thinks ultimate satisfaction is out there, living for the experiences, doing what I can do.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And before he even walks out the door, you can tell that this is in his heart.
- 10:10SPEAKER_00: He packs everything and he's already living out in the world.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Or he thinks that once he has experienced everything in life, that he's gonna know what satisfaction is.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Once he makes all the friends and he's the coolest guy on the block, once he drinks all the alcohol, sleeps with all the women that he can think of, and then he finds meaning and purpose in his life, right?
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: That's what he thinks.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: But then this the story continues in 14.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: It says, after he had spent everything, a severe famine struck that country and he had nothing.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Then he went to work for one of the citizens of that country who sent him out into his fields to feed pigs.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: He longed to eat his fill from the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one would give him anything.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: Right, and so the son, he's out living like he wants to.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: He's living the life that he always had dreamt of.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: He's chasing after the things that his heart desires for so long, and things are working out for him until they don't.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Because a famine hits the country that he's living in.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: And all of a sudden he feels this immense weight on his shoulders, the weight of his need.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: You can see a guy, you can see here, this guy he's outliving.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: He was at the top, the tippy top of the mountain.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: He thought he had it all, and now you can see his life.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: The only thing that he has left are the pigs that are laying next to him.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: It literally says that he has nothing.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: And guys, back then, man, pigs aren't like they are today, okay?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Because you know, my wife, she she would love pigs.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: I'm married to Maggie, we've been married for just over uh a year, and she mean she wants uh pigs, she wants chickens, she wants everything, she wants to live on a farm.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: I don't think that's gonna happen.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Our lease doesn't really allow for pigs, um, but she wants them, she thinks they're cute.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: I'm like, yeah, I'll take pigs.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: I think they taste good, okay?
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: Um, but also, man, they're dirty, okay?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Like back in the day, the pigs were viewed as like the dirtiest of the dirty, okay?
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: If you were a Jewish guy back in the day, you weren't even allowed to hang out with the pigs because they were viewed as unclean.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: And so if you take a step back for just a moment and see what's happening in this story, we can see that the son, man, he's pursued the parties, but he's ended up in the pit.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: He chased after the relationships, but was left at rock bottom.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And he pursued after all the things that the world could ever offer, right?
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: The Instagram, social media, money, power, good grades, a degree, right?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: The fancy like high-rise apartment in Dallas, and you can look down and look at all the losers while they're walking to work.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: It's like that's what he was chasing after.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: But what do you end up with?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, he had nothing.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: You guys, every day in our society, this exact story plays out.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Every single day.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: The idea of I'm gonna chase after the things in my life that I think matter or that I think will fulfill me.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: But in reality, it's those very things that are killing us, that are taking life away from you.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Because I can't help but think that there are some people who are in this room tonight that feel exactly like the younger brother.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: Or maybe you came to college to get away from your family, okay?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: To to make the to make the friends that you've always wanted, to be the cool guy on the block.
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Or maybe the only thing that you ever wanted in your life was a boyfriend.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: You know where you can find that?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Ladies, go to UNT, okay?
- 13:15SPEAKER_00: There's plenty of dudes there.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Because that because when you have a boyfriend, then you're finally gonna be valued and you're gonna be seen, you're gonna be heard.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: After all, college is all about getting a degree so you can make money, right?
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: One day have a fancy house, a nice car, probably a family with some kids, live out in the suburbs.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And you so somehow, in the first week, you find yourself at rock bottom.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: You're laying with the pigs.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Or you haven't even had a full week of school yet, and you've already done the thing that you promised you would never do in college.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Wondering, how the heck did I even get here?
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Because I'll tell you guys that this is in a way my story.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, I grew up in the Midwest all my life, Ohio, Michigan, whatever it is.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: And thinking that I was a Christian, I thought that.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: I grew up going to church, I went to youth group, and I but at the same time, I could not say no to the things of the world.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: And I ended up going to Michigan State University, go green, where I ran track and cross-country.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, my freshman year, all I cared about in life was pleasing my girlfriend who went to Michigan, so I knew that wasn't gonna work out.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: But all I thought about was pleasing my girlfriend, making sure that my friends thought I was cool, and then that in the end of the day, man, if I just run faster than the guy next to me, life's gonna be good.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I was willing to sacrifice anything at the altar of my life for my satisfaction.
- 14:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, my my story is similar to this guy, this younger son, because after the dust had settled, there was one thing that was true in my life, and that was that sin.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Okay, sin, which is the purposeful going against the will of God.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: It was that sin over-promised and under-delivered.
- 14:56SPEAKER_00: Sin promised the satisfaction that would come from doing this or that, but it never came.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: It over-promises and it underdelivers, and I found myself broken.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: He sees this.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: And maybe you're feeling like that right now because it's true.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: That's what we can learn from this younger son.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: That the things of this world will never satisfy us.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: No matter where you go, how many wells you try to dig, how many friends you have, or what night stands you can get in in one semester, it'll never satisfy.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: And so this younger son he runs off to a foreign land, finds himself with absolutely nothing, and then something pivotal happens in this story.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: Look with me at verse 17, quickly.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: It says, When he came to his senses, finally he comes to his senses, like, what is happening?
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: He comes to his senses and he says, How many of my father's workers have more than enough food?
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And here I am dying of hunger.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: I'll get up, go to my father, say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: I am no longer worthy to be called your son.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: Make me like one of your hired workers.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: So he recognizes the situation that he that he is in, and immediately he he compares, right?
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: He compares his life, not his past life as a son to his father, but no, he compares himself to one of his father's workers.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: He has lost the idea of what it means to be a son.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Because he man, he he's given up on being a son.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: He says, I have disqualified myself from having that privilege ever again.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Man, maybe if I could just be like one of the workers.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: He looks at the dirt that's on his own hands.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Honestly, the pig crap that is on his own hands.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: He hears the grumbles in his stomach, and he thinks, man, this would never happen to one of my father's workers.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: And here I am.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: So what so what does he do?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: Man, he he starts walking.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: He gets out of that pig pen, he starts walking back to his father's house.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And what I can imagine, he probably starts to devise this long speech.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like, Dad, I know I messed up.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I I I did something wrong, man, but I'm here.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: Okay, I know you probably hate me.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: Right right now, I can only imagine that's what he's feeling like.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Certainly, his hands, they're probably trembling.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: He's stuttering over in his words.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: I can imagine, like, some of you guys trying to ask out a girl, it's like, oh my gosh, like, what is she gonna say?
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Is she gonna say no?
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Like, what if she doesn't like me?
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: It's like this is what this dude is thinking, like, oh my gosh, I have screwed it up big time.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: And it makes sense, right?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: It's like we literally just stated, dude, you you quite literally spat in the face of your father.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Why would he not think that?
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Seriously, why would you not think that about you with a story, what happens next.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, the people in the room, they definitely would not have thought that this was gonna happen.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: But but look in verse 20, he says, so he got up.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: What does he do?
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: He goes to his father, and then look at this.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: It says, but while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: He ran, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: The son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: In your sight I am no longer worthy to be called, to be called your son.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And before the son, guys, before he could even get off uh into the uh before he could get to the front porch, man, the father it sees him out in the in the distance and he runs to him.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Okay, which this tells us one of two things.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: One is that the father was actually looking.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: The father was believing in his heart, man, one day my son is gonna walk down that driveway and I'm gonna get him.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: He was seeking after him.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And then that two is that, man, this dude ran after him.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, like back back in those days, guys, dudes, don't run.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Okay, if you have any uh like any influential power or anything in this life, it's like they wore robes, so dudes didn't have to run.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Okay, it was undistinguished for guys to do that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: But what happens is he goes and he runs after his son.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: He throws all shame to the side and he runs after him.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Okay, not only does he run, but guys, have you ever been around pigs before?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, specifically a big a pig farmer.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Probably not.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: This is Texas, we're more of like the the cattle cow type people.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: Um, but guys, pigs, man, they don't smell great, okay?
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: This dude is dirty.
- 19:24SPEAKER_00: He would have stank.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Seriously, stank, which breaks the idea that you gotta clean yourself up in order to come to God.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: The father sees him far away.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: He's seeking after him, he runs after him shamelessly, and then he hugs something that stinks so bad there's only one thing that could have come from, it's from a pig's butt.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Guys, it breaks the idea that you gotta clean yourself before you come to God.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: There is no certain amount of penance or hail marriage that you can do in order to clean yourself before God.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: No, God does not want you to do that in life.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: He wants you to be like this son walking down the driveway saying, God, I I know I'm not worthy, God, but here I am.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: I'm not worthy to be your son, but here I am.
- 20:11SPEAKER_00: You can see how the father reacts to his son coming home.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Man, he not only runs out to him, he wraps his arms around him, and then this is how God reacts to us, sons and daughters, returning home to him.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: Ephesians 2 is probably one of the most influential pieces of scripture in my own life because of this truth.
- 20:31SPEAKER_00: Right, my sophomore year?
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: I was at the lowest of lows in my life, broken, no girlfriend, no friends, no purpose in life.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Yet this is where God ran after me.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Right, my sophomore year, someone explained to me the gravity of my sin, and more importantly, they described the weight of Jesus dying on a cross, and it absolutely wrecked my life.
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Tyson already read the first seven verses.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna read the next three.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: And it could be the most important thing that you hear tonight.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: It says this in Ephesians 2, verse 8 for you are saved by grace through faith.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And this is not from yourselves, it is a gift.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: It is God's gift, not from works, so that no one can boast.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Listen, you can be saved from the sin that's in your life, the brokenness that you feel, the the the feeling of uh lost hope, loneliness, but only through one person, through one savior, and that's through faith in Jesus Christ.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: Quickly, I just want I just want to tell you guys, man, this is this is what we believe at Salt Company.
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'm gonna make it hopefully as simply as possible for you.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: So just man, if you come back, you're gonna continue to hear what I'm about to say.
- 21:42SPEAKER_00: But I just want to quickly make this ultra clear for you guys.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: So here at Salt Company, here's what uh we believe it we believe that no matter who you are or what you've done, you have never gone too far for the grace of God.
- 21:54SPEAKER_00: You can never sin so much that grace can't cover you.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: You can never turn your back and run so far or fall so hard.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: That Jesus cannot pick you back up.
- 22:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, there is no stench of sin that Jesus cannot cleanse you from.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: We sang about it.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: It's only the blood.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: There is no uh stench of sin that the blood cannot cover.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And ultimately, we believe that true satisfaction is found only in the inheritance that we receive as sons and daughters of the king.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Eternal life with him.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: So, guys, that's that's what we believe.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: I think that's what the father was thinking about in this moment as his son finally returns in Jesus' name.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: He's gonna illustrate exactly how he reacts, exactly how heaven reacts when we return home to him.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Look back at verse 21, it's gonna set the scene.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: So the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight, I'm no longer worthy to be called your son.
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 22:48SPEAKER_00: So he thought up this whole speech.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: He thought it up, he was gonna give it, but then the father, it cut, he cuts him off.
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 22:53SPEAKER_00: It says, But the father told his servants, quick, bring out everything.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Okay, I can imagine that this guy was probably walking uh down the road, and man, he just starts rejoicing.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Okay, he's got his arm around his son's shoulder.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: He looks to the servants like, man, get everything out here.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: Here's what he says in uh in 22.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: It says, Bring out the best robe, put it on him, put a ring on his finger, sandals on his feet, then bring the fattened calf, slaughter it, and let's celebrate with a feast.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: Because his this son of mine was dead and is alive again.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: He was lost and is found.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: So what?
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Man, they began to celebrate.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: The father, he doesn't even acknowledge the speech of the son.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: But I I think this father made, I think he'd fit in at UNT pretty pretty well, right?
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: His first reaction, man, it's not anger, it's not correction towards his son.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, what'd you do?
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Why are you doing that?
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Okay, no, it's it's it's come back like let's throw a party.
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Give this dude a robe.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Where's the best ring?
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, we're killing the the fat and calf, none of that vegan stuff.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: We are stakes, Marty B's not even on the menu.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: We're eating it tonight, okay?
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: The best.
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: He would have fit in right at Unity.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: But guys gotta understand this.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: It's that it is the absolute joy of the Father that the prodigal sons and the prodigal daughters might come back to him, back into the house of the Lord.
- 24:13SPEAKER_00: He finds joy in saving his children.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: It is the joy of the father that Jesus might save us.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: So I know what the instinct is.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: It's like, man, but does what does he really think about me?
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Am I really is it really that easy?
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: My son, Jesus, I mean, he could have stopped here.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Easy.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: He could have done it.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: And it would have been great.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: A lot of people probably would have been saved just from that story.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: But we gotta remember who's in the room.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: We gotta remember.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: And then there's this whole other group of people, okay?
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: It's like the sinners and the tax collectors.
- 24:47SPEAKER_00: Man, they're they're they're reading this probably like, crap, that's me.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, but this whole time, the Pharisees, the scribes, the ultra-religious people of the day, they would have been listening to it, and it's like, okay, this part doesn't really apply to me, whatever.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: It's like uh the whole time they're probably whispering to yourself, it's like, man, this definitely ain't about us, but like Kyle over there, he's definitely feeling conviction right now, you know?
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: So they're sitting in this room, probably feeling all sorts of like, man, I'm chill, I'm good, I'm with the Father, you know?
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I'm like the other son who's just been staying faithful my whole life.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Jesus, man, he knew this.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: He sees the hearts of the Pharisees, of the scribes.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: And Jesus knew that although the religious relates of the day, man, they might not have been actively running away from God, but they sure as heck did not know him.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: So Jesus, man, he continues the story.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: Verse 25, it goes to the second son of the story.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: It says, Now this older son was in the field.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: He came near the house, he heard music and dancing.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: So he summoned one of the servants, questioning what these things meant.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, which pause?
- 25:52SPEAKER_00: Susie, what kind of party is this?
- 25:54SPEAKER_00: Okay, you look, it's like uh, man, older brother coming up from outside in the field and he hears the party.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Okay, uh music, I can understand.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: But dancing, it's like, man, have you ever been to a party where you can hear the dancing from outside?
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: It's like, geez, what kind of party is this?
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, if they're having a pancake party, people are making complaints, cops definitely showing up there, okay?
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: Definitely.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: That's that's against the law.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: But but this, if the son rocks up to this party and he starts to ask some questions.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: What is happening here?
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: Like, did I miss something?
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: And he starts to ask some questions.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: He pulls one of the servants aside and he gets the news.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: Verse 27 says, Your brother is here.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: This is what the servant says to him.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Your brother is here, he told him, and your father has slaughtered the fattened calf, because he has him back safe and sound.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: When he this this is the the Lord's son, when he became angry and did not want to go in.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: So his father came out and pleaded with him.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: But he replied to his father, Look, I have been slaving many years for you, and I have never disobeyed your orders, yet you never gave me a goat, so that I could celebrate with my friends.
- 27:04SPEAKER_00: But when this son of yours, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, man, you slaughtered the fattened calf for him.
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 27:12SPEAKER_00: And so right there, we see where this older brother, where his heart is actually, where the older son actually is.
- 27:19SPEAKER_00: Man, I can imagine, I mean, he he walks up to the party, he hears uh people chanting the the younger name, the name of his younger brother, right?
- 27:27SPEAKER_00: The DJ is playing party in the USA, he can smell the steak coming from inside.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: And where's the older brother?
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: The older son, man, he's outside.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: Angry.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: He's like, he's mad that he can't even get into the party.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: Eventually his father comes out, and you can see by the language that he uses, the state of his heart.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: He says this, he says, I have been slaving for you.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: This is this dude's dad.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: This is his father.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Yet rather than say, Man, I've been your son for many years, I have been slaving for you.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: And then the way that he talks about his brother, it's not, man, when my brother came home, you did this.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: It's, man, when that son of yours came home, clearly there is some deeper discontentment, hatred there.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: Again, just like the younger brother, the younger son, the older son has lost what it means to be a son of the father.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And so it is at this moment in the story that we actually realize that there are two lost sons in the story.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Two prodigal sons.
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: One who ran away, becoming reckless, and the other who stayed home and became resentful.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: One who ran farther away from the father, and one who stayed home but was still far from the heart of the father.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: Man, he's showing us something right here, something that we ought to pay attention to, I think.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: And it's this that you can be just as lost in a church than as than in a club.
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: That you cannot know the father while being also in a pew and a pig pen.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: So while the younger son might be a great illustration that the things of this world can never satisfy us, the older son means he paints this picture, that religion, that church attendance, that good works, it cannot save our souls.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: The older son had a misunderstanding in his own mind, just like the younger one.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: He thought that it was the years of faithful living, hard work, dedication to the father that ultimately learned, that earned the love of his father.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: Like if I do this, then my father will think of me this way, or my father will love me.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: He'll give me what I deserve.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: And while I know there are plenty of people who identify with a younger son tonight, I know for a fact that there are people who would identify with the older son right now.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: Whereas someone who came to UNT or came to DWTWU who sought after a college ministry to be a part of, right?
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Because they don't party, they don't smoke, they would never do anything inappropriate with their significant other.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Because in their mind, the formula goes the same way as this guy.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: If I do this or if I don't do this, then God or that I will uh get into heaven one day.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: That God will love me.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you something.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: Guys, if the older brother was alive today, 2026, and lived in Denton, man, he and he was going to UNT or TWU, I can almost be certain that he would be in this room tonight.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: That he would be at King's Church on a Sunday.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Because that's what a good Christian does.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: And I think these days, especially, man, it'd be so easy for us to look at the story that's being painted here by Jesus and see, God, man, seek and save the lost.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: We love like a radical uh testimony to just celebrate that.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: But then at the end of the day, it's like, man, but the people who are have always been close to God yet uh lost their way to just be like, man, ridicule.
- 31:10SPEAKER_00: It'd be so easy to do that.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: So easy to root for that to happen in the story, but it doesn't.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: What happens in verse 31?
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: The son, this this is this is what happens, son, the father said, You are always with me, and everything I have is yours.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: But we had to celebrate and rejoice because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: He was lost and is found.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: So the father, I mean, he pleads with his son, come inside.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: But this is how the father responds to the son who has never left his side, yet still feels angry with what's happening around him.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: Right in this story, there are two lost sons.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Because deep down, both the younger and the older brother have both lost sight of what it means to be a son.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Each saw how they acted and expected different things from the father.
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: The younger son saw how he acted.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: He threw away all of his father's money.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm surely getting wrath.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: The younger brother said, I've done all the right things, surely I'm getting love.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: But at the end of the day, the truth of the story is this is that the love of the father was not dependent on how they acted or how many good or bad things that they did, that they did, but rather it was dependent on their status, their status as sons.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: And so to the older brothers who are in the room tonight, I think you might need to hear this, is that your religion, man, it can't save you.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: And when I say religion, I mean uh the good works, okay?
- 32:39SPEAKER_00: You can never attend church so much that you will one day earn your way into heaven.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: You can never help enough old ladies across the street to forgive yourself for what you did last night.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: You will never have better morals than the other person to where you're gonna be closer to heaven than someone else.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: The message of the gospel is this it's not what you can do for God, but rather what he has already done for you on the cross.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And I've heard it this way it's that the ground is level at the foot of the cross.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: Or in other words, when we come repentant, crying to the Father, we are all on the same level.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: No one is closer to the Father or further away from the Father when we repent.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: We all come with one thing, and that's empty hands.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: That's we see that there are two lost sons in this story, but not only two sons are in this story, there's actually a third son.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 33:33SPEAKER_00: One son runs away in rebellion, the other stays in discontentment, and the third son that's in this story is actually the one that's telling it.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: The one that is speaking to these people, to the people in the room.
- 33:45unknown: Right?
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: If you're the younger son, man, it told us that the world cannot satisfy our hearts, and the older son said that our religion cannot save our souls, but then Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who is telling this story, he tells us absolutely that he is able to do both.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: Jesus is able to satisfy the deepest desires of your heart.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Anything you could ever want, he can satisfy.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: He can certainly save us from any sin that we have brought upon ourselves.
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: The penalty for sin is death, but guys, he can sat, he can satisfy the wrath of the Father.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: He can pay for it.
- 34:21SPEAKER_00: And he tells this story to a room full of sinners and self-righteous.
- 34:26SPEAKER_00: A story about a father who was seeking after a son that was lost and redeeming a son who was secretly broken.
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: And not only did Jesus tell this story, but guys, he is one who lived it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: You see, the father in this story, man, he might have been standing at the window one day waiting, looking out, hoping to see his son come down the road.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: But Jesus, he's the one who traveled to that foreign country.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: He traveled across universes to save us from the pig stench of our sin.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: He came to live for us in perfect obedience to the Father, never leaving his side, never disobeying him.
- 35:01SPEAKER_00: And he pursued after us recklessly to the point where he ended up on a Roman cross, where he died.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: A death that he was willing to die, that he was willing to go for.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Because it meant that you and I might have the opportunity to live with God in unity forever.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Amen.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Jesus came preaching a message to those of us who are the older brothers, that there's nothing that we can do to earn the love of God, but yet he still accepts us with open arms with those who acknowledge their need for a savior.
- 35:38SPEAKER_00: He came seeking and pursuing after those of us who are the younger brothers, living our lives, spending our money on things that we think will give us life, but in the end are only leading us to destruction.
- 35:49SPEAKER_00: The message of the gospel, the message of Jesus, and guys, the message of Salt Company is this, and it always will be, until I'm until long after I'm dead, you're dead, or anyone else is dead.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: This is the message that Jesus is the perfect Son of God who came to live a life that we were unable to live.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, he came to die a death that we deserved to die, and that three days later he rose victorious over sin, Satan, and death, that we might live with him in eternity.
- 36:15SPEAKER_00: Guys, there's nothing more important than that right there in your life.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: I think at the end of the day, there is no better thing to live for in your four years in college, let alone the 40 years after college, than that right there.
- 36:29SPEAKER_00: Culture tells you, no, live for yourself.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Live for what you can do on the weekend with who you can do it.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Guys, it's not worth it.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: The message of Jesus brings hope.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: It brings redemption to those who feel broken.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: And guess to that end, to the older sons, to the younger sons in the room, who maybe feel broken or maybe feel like the Father doesn't even know them.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: Let's pray.
- 37:08SPEAKER_00: Lord, I'm grateful for what you've done tonight, the people that you've brought uh into this room.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Lord, I'm grateful for what Luke 15 says to us.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Lord, the the message that we get to receive because of it, how you have been thoughtfully weaving the story of redemption ever since uh before we walk this earth, until you will come again.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: Lord, I pray that this story will be true of us.
- 37:35SPEAKER_00: God, I pray to for those of the students in the room tonight who feel like the younger son, who maybe have come to college to live the college experience, to try to fill themselves with anything and everything that they can get their hands on.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Lord, I pray that you would open up their heart to see the goodness and the satisfaction that only you can provide, the lasting satisfaction, the well that will never run dry.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: And Lord, to the older sons in the room who feel good about themselves, the self-righteous, who would say, Yeah, I'm gonna go to self-company, I'm gonna go to church because that's what I'm supposed to do, and I'm good because of that.
- 38:11SPEAKER_00: Lord, would you correct that in our hearts that our works cannot get us into heaven?
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Lord, it says in your word in Ephesians 2 that it is by your grace that we are safe so that no one may boast.
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: And Lord, we boast in nothing but your goodness.
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: And Lord, would you just bless us with the sound of heaven rejoicing over those lost, prodigal sons and daughters who have come back to you?
- 38:39SPEAKER_00: Saul Company said, Amen.
