- 1:31you would like, and come on back to
- 1:35the show.
- 1:36All right, guys, let's kick this off right
- 1:40now, all right?
- 1:41So hello, everyone, and welcome again to the
- 1:43ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 1:46I'm your host, John C.
- 1:48Morley, a serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video
- 1:51producer, podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, a graduate
- 1:55student at Montclair State University, yes, a passionate
- 1:59lifelong learner, and so grateful now to be
- 2:03a published author.
- 2:04Welcome, everyone.
- 2:05This is Series 5, Show 41, and this
- 2:09is episode number two.
- 2:13So our weekly master topic is Momentum Changes
- 2:17Everything, and this week is about creating forward
- 2:21motion before we feel completely ready.
- 2:24Yesterday, we discovered why starting can create the
- 2:28confidence and information that waiting cannot, okay?
- 2:35Today is Sunday.
- 2:36As I said, it's episode two, and our
- 2:39topic is Hesitation is Costing You Everything.
- 2:42I think that's an important one that a
- 2:43lot of people often miss, they don't realize
- 2:46exists, but it's a very, very important one
- 2:49to pay attention to.
- 2:51So now I'm talking about making reckless decisions,
- 2:56thoughtful planning matters, research matters, taking appropriate time
- 3:01for major decisions matters, but there's a difference
- 3:04between thoughtful consideration and repeatedly postponing a decision
- 3:08because, well, we're hoping uncertainty will completely disappear.
- 3:13So today, let's examine what hesitation may actually
- 3:17be costing you.
- 3:19Before we get to our 30 points, I
- 3:20do want to give a shout out to
- 3:22a local coffee shop here right in New
- 3:25Jersey.
- 3:25We do this, guys, on every Sunday and
- 3:28every Thursday.
- 3:31So our shout out today goes to Cedar
- 3:34Beans Coffee Joint.
- 3:36They're currently closed right now.
- 3:39Sundays, they're only open until 5.
- 3:41Monday through, looks like Wednesday, they're open from
- 3:477 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday,
- 3:497 a.m. to 9 p.m. on
- 3:50Friday.
- 3:52Yes, they are open 7 a.m. to
- 3:555 p.m. And Saturday, 8 a.m.
- 3:59to 5 p.m. So they are located,
- 4:03basically, it's the Cedar Beans, so they're located
- 4:07basically right there in Cedar, in Cedar Grove.
- 4:14And so I want to share a little
- 4:18bit about this place.
- 4:21So their exact, if I have their exact
- 4:23address, it's 575 Pompton Ave, Cedar Grove, New
- 4:27Jersey 07009.
- 4:30So they're known for, basically, they're saying that
- 4:34they're a great coffeehouse, that you can come
- 4:36and explore them.
- 4:37So they have a very interesting menu.
- 4:40Their menu starts off with things like cinnamon
- 4:43rolls, brown butter bliss, snickerdoodles.
- 4:47They have cold brews, coffee, tea, other food,
- 4:51and more.
- 4:52So that's pretty cool what they've got.
- 4:54They've got Bakery Fresh daily, Cedar Beans Spectacular.
- 4:58They call it Scones.
- 5:00And yeah, they've got Cedar Beans Coffee Joint
- 5:04to-go breakfast.
- 5:05They've got that as well.
- 5:07So just from what I can see on
- 5:08the website, I have not been there.
- 5:10They also have an art gallery.
- 5:12So go ahead and give them a try
- 5:14and let them know you heard about them
- 5:15for Inspirations for Your Life.
- 5:17Don't forget, ladies and gentlemen, to check that
- 5:20out.
- 5:20But the reason I'm reaching out to this
- 5:22coffee place today is because I want to
- 5:24say to them, I want you to check
- 5:25out jasonacademy.com.
- 5:28And with jasonacademy.com, I'd like you to
- 5:30go ahead and request that we host a
- 5:33show free at your facility.
- 5:35We'll do our live show.
- 5:37We'll do an author talk.
- 5:38We'll do an author Q&A and author
- 5:40signing.
- 5:42So without any further ado, guys, let's get
- 5:44into today's show.
- 5:46Number one, guys, hesitation has cost even when
- 5:51we cannot immediately see it.
- 5:53So when you delay a decision, it may
- 5:56feel like nothing is happening, but time is
- 5:59passing.
- 6:00Attention is being consumed.
- 6:01Opportunities may be moving.
- 6:04Waiting isn't always free, guys.
- 6:06It's not always free.
- 6:07Number two, delayed decisions consume mental energy.
- 6:10I think this is one a lot of
- 6:12people forget, but this is really the truth,
- 6:14guys.
- 6:15This is a real big truth.
- 6:17Have you ever carried the same unfinished decision
- 6:19around for days?
- 6:21Maybe it just follows you.
- 6:23You think about it while working.
- 6:25You revisit it later.
- 6:26Your mind keeps returning to something that still
- 6:31hasn't been resolved yet.
- 6:35That's what it's about.
- 6:37Number three, repeatedly reconsidering the same choice creates
- 6:41exhaustion.
- 6:43Thinking isn't automatically progress.
- 6:45If you're reviewing the same information and reaching
- 6:48the same conclusions repeatedly, you may simply be
- 6:53exhausting yourself.
- 6:55Yeah.
- 6:56Number four, give ordinary decisions reasonable deadlines.
- 7:00Not every decision deserves unlimited consideration.
- 7:04Give yourself an appropriate amount of time.
- 7:07Make the best reasonable choices you can and
- 7:10then move forward.
- 7:12Number five, guys, separate thoughtful planning from endless
- 7:16postponement.
- 7:16I think a lot of people, you know,
- 7:18they get into this predicament where they just
- 7:20keep postponing things.
- 7:21And they're like, why aren't things getting done?
- 7:22Well, it's because you keep postponing things.
- 7:26That's the real truth.
- 7:29And so planning should eventually produce action, right?
- 7:34Ask yourself whether you're still gathering meaningful information
- 7:38or simply delaying the moment when you have
- 7:42to choose.
- 7:44Number six, ask what information you are genuinely
- 7:47missing.
- 7:48This question is powerful.
- 7:50What specific piece of information would materially change
- 7:54your question?
- 7:55If you can't identify one, more information may
- 7:59not be what you've actually been waiting for.
- 8:03Number seven, stop researching when research becomes hard,
- 8:12right?
- 8:13Like you're doing something, right?
- 8:16So because of that, we have to take
- 8:19a look at it.
- 8:22And there comes a point when the next
- 8:25article, video, conversation, or opinion isn't improving the
- 8:29decision.
- 8:30It's delaying it, unfortunately, guys.
- 8:33Number eight, fear can disguise itself as preparation.
- 8:38I think we've all seen that in our
- 8:39lives, right?
- 8:40When fear kind of goes into that mode
- 8:43and we don't necessarily know what to do.
- 8:47But we're just like, we got to do
- 8:49something, but we don't know what to do.
- 8:51We just keep getting into this loop, right?
- 8:53A loop that doesn't get us anywhere.
- 8:55And I think that's a huge problem for
- 8:57a lot of people.
- 8:58So sometimes we tell ourselves, I'm just getting
- 9:01prepared.
- 9:02But that seems like it's lasting for eternity.
- 9:04But underneath that preparation may be fear of
- 9:07choosing incorrectly, being judged, failing, or dealing with
- 9:11an uncertain outcome.
- 9:13Recognizing that difference matters tremendously.
- 9:18Tremendously.
- 9:19Number nine, you will rarely eliminate every uncertainty.
- 9:24So if you know that now, why don't
- 9:26we just fess up to it and say,
- 9:28that's what it's going to be, right?
- 9:31That's what it's going to be right now.
- 9:32I think that's a very important thing for
- 9:36all of us to be aware of.
- 9:42Life doesn't normally provide complete information.
- 9:47You're never going to eliminate every uncertainty.
- 9:50Number nine, there will be unknowns.
- 9:54The goal isn't to know everything.
- 9:57It's to know enough to make a responsible
- 9:59choice or next decision.
- 10:02Number 10, decisions create direction until you decide
- 10:06you may have possibilities.
- 10:08Once you decide you have a direction and
- 10:10direction gives you energy, there's somewhere to go.
- 10:15But this might not always be clear, right?
- 10:20It might not always be clear.
- 10:21I think that's a big problem for a
- 10:24lot of people to realize.
- 10:30I think that's important.
- 10:33Number 11, direction creates opportunities for adjustment, for
- 10:37us to pivot.
- 10:39A decision doesn't look every future door and
- 10:46make sure it won't open.
- 10:46No.
- 10:48Once you're moving, you can observe what happens
- 10:51and adjust to it.
- 10:54Movement gives you new information.
- 10:57Number 12, waiting for guarantees can keep you
- 11:00stationary.
- 11:02Guarantees are rare.
- 11:04If your standard for movement is knowing exactly
- 11:07how everything will turn out, you may spend
- 11:10a very long time waiting.
- 11:13You might be saying, John, well, no, I'm
- 11:17just kind of delaying.
- 11:19No, you're procrastinating and you're hoping something's going
- 11:22to happen, but then it really doesn't.
- 11:25I think that's a big problem for a
- 11:28lot of people.
- 11:31I think that's something really, really important to
- 11:33understand.
- 11:35Number 13, trust yourself to respond to your
- 11:39own information.
- 11:41I know that sounds like a hard thing,
- 11:42guys.
- 11:43But can you trust yourself to do it?
- 11:45And again, I'm not saying it's going to
- 11:47be easy for you.
- 11:47I'm not saying that at all.
- 11:49But I'm saying this is something we need
- 11:51to focus on.
- 11:52You don't have to predict every future variable.
- 11:57Trust that if new information appears, you can
- 12:00evaluate it and respond intelligently, pivoting your decision.
- 12:05Number 14, you are allowed to make decisions
- 12:10with what you know today.
- 12:14Today's decisions should be based on today's reasonable
- 12:18information.
- 12:20Tomorrow may teach you something new.
- 12:23That's growth, not failure.
- 12:26Number 15, small decisions deserve less mental real
- 12:29estate.
- 12:31Be careful about spending enormous amounts of attention
- 12:36on decisions that have relatively small consequences.
- 12:41Save your deeper thinking for choices that truly
- 12:44deserve it.
- 12:46Number 16, stop reopening choices that have already
- 12:50been reasonably made.
- 12:52Once you've made a thoughtful decision, give it
- 12:56a chance.
- 12:57Constantly reopening it can destroy the momentum the
- 13:02decision was supposed to create.
- 13:08Number 17, protect your attention from unnecessary indecision.
- 13:15Your attention is valuable.
- 13:17Every unresolved choice occupies some of it.
- 13:23Closing unnecessary mental loops gives that attention back
- 13:27to you.
- 13:30Number 18, ask whether hesitation is protecting you
- 13:34or is it limiting you.
- 13:36Sometimes hesitation protects us from a genuine risk.
- 13:39Other times it protects us from temporary discomfort
- 13:42while limiting our opportunity to grow.
- 13:46Know which one you're dealing with.
- 13:49Number 19, create a next action instead of
- 13:53another hypothetical scenario.
- 13:56Instead of asking, what if this happens?
- 13:59What if that happens?
- 14:01Ask what the next responsible action I can
- 14:04take is.
- 14:05See, that question moves you toward reality.
- 14:11And a lot of people don't want to
- 14:14pay attention to reality.
- 14:15I'm sorry.
- 14:15They just don't want to pay attention to
- 14:17it.
- 14:18And I think that's an important piece for
- 14:20us to realize that we need to pay
- 14:24attention to that.
- 14:26And if we could pay attention to that,
- 14:28that is the key to what goes on
- 14:32in our life.
- 14:34That's the key to what goes on in
- 14:36our life.
- 14:37And I can tell you that is something
- 14:40most people will not want to know.
- 14:46I'm just being quite honest with you.
- 14:50But you've got to realize what your resources
- 14:52are.
- 14:53Number 20, courage can look like making the
- 14:57call.
- 14:58Courage isn't always dramatic.
- 15:00Sometimes courage is sending the message.
- 15:03It's submitting the application.
- 15:05It's having the conversation.
- 15:07It's making the appointment.
- 15:08It's choosing.
- 15:09It's doing something over not doing anything.
- 15:13It's taking action.
- 15:15Number 21, guys, speed does not mean recklessness.
- 15:23It doesn't mean recklessness.
- 15:26And maybe hopefully that will get you to
- 15:28understand that you can make big changes.
- 15:31Okay?
- 15:32Hopefully that will get you to see that.
- 15:35Number 21, speed does not mean recklessness.
- 15:39And decisiveness isn't about making every choice instantly.
- 15:44It's about giving decisions the amount of thought
- 15:47they deserve and then, only then, being willing
- 15:51to act upon them.
- 15:54Number 22, thoughtful people can still act decisively.
- 15:58You can analyze carefully and move confidently.
- 16:01And those qualities aren't opposites.
- 16:07They're the key in recognizing when thinking has
- 16:11completed its job.
- 16:15I know a lot of people, they jump
- 16:17to decisions so quickly, but they don't realize
- 16:19what they're jumping to or why they're jumping.
- 16:22I think that's a very important thing.
- 16:27And so I think we can all think
- 16:35about that for a moment.
- 16:36We can all think about that.
- 16:40Number 23, every choice in our world teaches
- 16:43us something.
- 16:45Even when a decision doesn't produce the result
- 16:48you expect, it can provide information, data is
- 16:53what I like to say.
- 16:54So you learn what worked, what didn't, and
- 16:57what you do differently next time.
- 17:01Number 24.
- 17:03A decision can be adjusted without becoming a
- 17:06failure.
- 17:07Changing course doesn't automatically mean the original decision
- 17:10was foolish or bad.
- 17:12New information can justify a better direction of
- 17:14decision, and you can make a different decision
- 17:16if the information changes that you have originally
- 17:19been given.
- 17:21Number 25.
- 17:23Stop treating every choice like it determines your
- 17:26entire future.
- 17:28A lot of people do this, and they
- 17:29don't know what to say.
- 17:30They don't know what to do, and they're
- 17:31like, oh, my gosh.
- 17:32What am I going to do?
- 17:33What am I going to say?
- 17:35I think that's a hard thing for a
- 17:37lot of people to be aware of what's
- 17:40going on.
- 17:42I think that's a very important thing that
- 17:47most people, like they just don't realize what
- 17:50it is.
- 17:52And hopefully that means something to you.
- 17:55Hopefully.
- 17:56I'm not saying it has to.
- 17:58But it hopefully makes a difference for you
- 18:02in your life.
- 18:03I know these things sound hard, and they
- 18:06sound difficult.
- 18:07But the thing is we've just got to
- 18:08give them a chance.
- 18:10When we give something a chance, there's a
- 18:14lot of potential.
- 18:20That can be hard for some people, I
- 18:22know.
- 18:23But we've got to be willing to try.
- 18:28Some decisions, as I said, they matter enormously.
- 18:30Many, they don't even hold water.
- 18:34So when you treat every choice like a
- 18:36permanent life-defining event, you create pressure that
- 18:41can make action much harder.
- 18:43You can cause delayed action like procrastination.
- 18:46I think that can be a big challenge
- 18:48for a lot of people.
- 18:49Number 26, guys.
- 18:52Momentum grows when decisions become actions.
- 18:57A decision sitting in your head hasn't created
- 19:00much movement yet.
- 19:01When the decision becomes behavior, momentum just sort
- 19:06of begins again and again and again.
- 19:11But I realize that this can be scary.
- 19:13I do realize that.
- 19:14So you're probably saying, John, how do we
- 19:16handle this?
- 19:17I think the best way we handle this
- 19:18is that we go forward and we give
- 19:20it a try.
- 19:21There's no harm in trying, guys.
- 19:25There is no harm in trying.
- 19:28So why not give it a try, right?
- 19:33Number 27, action gives you feedback.
- 19:38Once you act, reality starts answering some of
- 19:42your questions.
- 19:43You see reactions.
- 19:44You see results.
- 19:45You discover obstacles.
- 19:46You gain experience.
- 19:49And sometimes we have to make changes in
- 19:51our life to allow that to adapt.
- 19:54I think that's a very important thing for
- 19:58us to realize.
- 20:03So we have to be aware of this.
- 20:07That's important.
- 20:10And if we know that feedback gives you
- 20:12better information, 28, this is why movement is
- 20:15so valuable.
- 20:16Instead of relying entirely on predictions, you begin
- 20:19collecting evidence from what actually happens in your
- 20:21life as opposed to what you think is
- 20:23going to happen.
- 20:24Number 29, better information helps you make stronger
- 20:31future decisions.
- 20:34Action creates feedback.
- 20:35Feedback creates information.
- 20:37Information improves future decisions.
- 20:39And those decisions create better action.
- 20:42That's a powerful cycle.
- 20:44Number 30, make the best reasonable choice and
- 20:48move forward.
- 20:50That's today's central message, guys.
- 20:52Not the perfect choice.
- 20:54Not the guaranteed choice.
- 20:56Not the choice that eliminates every possibility of
- 20:59disappointment from your life and others.
- 21:02The best reasonable choice you can make with
- 21:05the information available to you is the best
- 21:07choice you can make at this moment.
- 21:09And then move on.
- 21:10If more information comes to have you change
- 21:11the choice, well, you got new information, you
- 21:13could change the choice later on.
- 21:15This is where we have to understand.
- 21:20Today's topic connects directly to momentum that changes
- 21:24everything in our life.
- 21:26Yesterday, we talked about starting before you feel
- 21:30completely ready.
- 21:31Today, we're confronting one of the biggest things
- 21:34that can stop that momentum before it grows.
- 21:38What is it, guys?
- 21:39It's hesitation.
- 21:40I'm sure you've heard of the word hesitation
- 21:42before.
- 21:43But a lot of people don't realize what
- 21:45they can do or how that can cause
- 21:48your life to get off track.
- 21:53That's important.
- 21:58I think that's an important thing to understand
- 22:01and how we can move forward with that.
- 22:06Think about something you've been reconsidering repeatedly.
- 22:11Ask yourself, what am I actually waiting for?
- 22:13Is there important information I still need?
- 22:16If so, identify it and go get it.
- 22:19But if you already have enough information to
- 22:22make a reasonable decision, ask yourself whether more
- 22:25thinking is actually helping.
- 22:28Maybe the next breakthrough isn't another hour of
- 22:30analysis.
- 22:31Maybe it's a decision.
- 22:33And once you make the decision, take one
- 22:36action that supports it.
- 22:38Again, send the email.
- 22:40Make the call.
- 22:41Start the project.
- 22:44Schedule the time.
- 22:45Have the conversation.
- 22:47Write the first page.
- 22:49Take the next step.
- 22:51Because the decision creates direction.
- 22:54Direction creates action.
- 22:58Action creates feedback.
- 23:00Feedback creates better information that can allow us
- 23:04to make a change.
- 23:08That's momentum, guys.
- 23:09So here is your challenge for today or
- 23:14tomorrow.
- 23:15Choose one decision you've been unnecessarily carrying around.
- 23:19Give yourself a reasonable deadline.
- 23:24Identify the information you generally need.
- 23:28Pretty easy so far.
- 23:30Make the best responsible choice available to you
- 23:35today with the information that you have.
- 23:37Then take one concrete action.
- 23:42You may discover that the energy you were
- 23:45spending reconsidering the decision can finally be redirected
- 23:50toward building something new.
- 23:55A lot of people I know just don't
- 23:56want to admit that they can do that.
- 24:00They don't want to admit that.
- 24:01So I think that's a big challenge for
- 24:03a lot of people in their lives.
- 24:06They don't know what to say.
- 24:07They don't know what to do.
- 24:08All they know is that they're either stuck
- 24:11or they've got to make a decision.
- 24:13And if they make a decision, they're like,
- 24:15well, what does this mean?
- 24:19Am I making a decision or am I
- 24:21doing something that might not be right?
- 24:24I mean, that's just the truth.
- 24:27That's the truth.
- 24:32Hopefully, you'll be able to see the challenges
- 24:34in your life and you'll be able to
- 24:36move past them.
- 24:37You'll be able to move past them in
- 24:39your life.
- 24:40And I know this is not easy for
- 24:44any of us.
- 24:45It's not easy.
- 24:46But what I can tell you is that
- 24:48this makes the difference.
- 24:53This makes the difference of whether you're going
- 24:57to be successful or not.
- 25:02This makes the difference.
- 25:06But you might hit some roadblocks along the
- 25:08way.
- 25:09Obstacles, right?
- 25:11That may happen.
- 25:13Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
- 25:16Morley.
- 25:17I'm a serial entrepreneur, engineer, author, keynote speaker,
- 25:21and a lot more.
- 25:22And this has been another powerful, amazing episode
- 25:25of The Inspirations for Your Life Show.
- 25:31I take this moment seriously to say thank
- 25:34you from the bottom of my heart to
- 25:36all of you that are deciding to watch
- 25:38my show today.
- 25:39And those of you that are coming back
- 25:41to re-watch other episodes and to follow
- 25:44this entire week about momentum.
- 25:47I thank you for that.
- 25:49Remember, ladies and gentlemen, thoughtful decisions matter.
- 25:59But endless hesitation has a price.
- 26:05What is that price?
- 26:09Well, it could be your time.
- 26:11It could be your attention.
- 26:14It could be relationships.
- 26:17It could be finances.
- 26:20It could be your health.
- 26:25Protect all these.
- 26:27Trust your ability to adjust in the world.
- 26:31I know that sounds like something so difficult
- 26:33and hard, but I want to tell you
- 26:34something.
- 26:34It's not.
- 26:35Once you get on the right track, you're
- 26:38going to say, oh my gosh, this actually
- 26:39makes sense for me.
- 26:42And this was as hard as I thought
- 26:43it was going to be.
- 26:44We all do that.
- 26:45We make problems harder than what they really
- 26:47are, and then we never start them.
- 26:50Like, oh, wait a minute.
- 26:51This wasn't as difficult as I thought it
- 26:53was going to be.
- 26:54No, we just made it harder than what
- 26:56it really was.
- 27:00I find that's the case for a lot
- 27:01of things in life.
- 27:02We make things harder than what they really
- 27:03are.
- 27:04We really do.
- 27:07So trust your ability to adjust.
- 27:11Make the best reasonable decisions you can with
- 27:15what you know today, the information you are
- 27:17presented with today.
- 27:18If you get more information in the future,
- 27:19fine.
- 27:20You can reevaluate it and change your mind
- 27:22later or decision.
- 27:24Then, ladies and gentlemen, I want you to
- 27:25move.
- 27:26Because, you see, momentum doesn't grow from endlessly
- 27:29thinking about your next steps.
- 27:32No.
- 27:33It actually grows when you finally take it.
- 27:39That's not talking about it.
- 27:40That's just doing it.
- 27:45I invite you, ladies and gentlemen, to please
- 27:47keep learning, keep growing, keep moving forward.
- 27:51And remember, ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to
- 27:52see you on the next episode.
- 27:54But remember to check out BelieveMeAchieved.com for
- 27:58more of my amazing, of course, inspiring creations.
