- 0:11what is going on everybody welcome
- 0:33to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:35Today we have with us none
- 0:38other than the incomparable,
- 0:40amazing CrossFit coach
- 0:42Justin Kotler and my
- 0:44co-host Jamie Latimer.
- 0:45And we're going to talk
- 0:46about all things quarterfinals,
- 0:48the Danielle documentary.
- 0:50We're going to get to all that stuff.
- 0:52But we're right in the
- 0:53middle of team quarterfinals.
- 0:56Workouts came out yesterday.
- 0:57You are living right in the
- 1:00middle of it right now.
- 1:01I think your teams did some
- 1:03workouts already today.
- 1:04Yes.
- 1:05Yes.
- 1:06Actually.
- 1:07We've, some of the teams have done,
- 1:12actually,
- 1:12I think all of them have done one,
- 1:14the first one, with a muscle up one.
- 1:17And then we had a couple of
- 1:18them wanted to go a little
- 1:20bit differently.
- 1:20So they did two and then
- 1:23another one did three, you know,
- 1:24so you had the dumbbell
- 1:27snatch workout and then the
- 1:29wall ball workout.
- 1:29So I've gotten to see those three.
- 1:31So I have a pretty good feel.
- 1:33We haven't done the fourth one yet,
- 1:36the deadlift shoulder overhead.
- 1:39But, yeah, I have opinions.
- 1:43And, you know, it's been good to watch.
- 1:47And it's weird with these long, you know,
- 1:50periods that you have.
- 1:52The scoring windows, oh, my God,
- 1:54it's just like –
- 1:55I wish it would have been
- 1:56two days for the first
- 1:57scoring period and two days
- 1:58for the second.
- 1:59It doesn't need to be more
- 2:00than that with four workouts.
- 2:01It's overkill.
- 2:03These teams,
- 2:03you don't need to be repeating workouts.
- 2:05I mean, come on.
- 2:07So that part of it is annoying.
- 2:10But honestly, it's like –
- 2:11you know, it's pretty stressless for the,
- 2:14you know,
- 2:15because they're doing a workout.
- 2:17You can take a day off if
- 2:18you want to do another workout,
- 2:20take a day off doing a, I mean, it's just,
- 2:22you know,
- 2:23like for scheduling and stuff like that.
- 2:25And for training where you
- 2:26want people to continue to train,
- 2:28you know, it's a,
- 2:29it's a bit of a pain in the butt.
- 2:30So I think this is,
- 2:31this has been one of my pet
- 2:32peeves for a while.
- 2:33I don't think CrossFit
- 2:34listens to the right people.
- 2:37You know, a couple people complain,
- 2:39I got to work.
- 2:40You can't put the window
- 2:42during the work week.
- 2:43But we all go to a CrossFit
- 2:44class in the middle of the
- 2:45week all the time.
- 2:48These workouts do not take
- 2:49more than an hour.
- 2:51There's no tape on the floor.
- 2:52There's no, like,
- 2:55you don't need six days to
- 2:57do four events.
- 2:58No, absolutely not.
- 3:01Like,
- 3:01you're overcorrecting something that
- 3:03wasn't a problem.
- 3:05Yeah, correct.
- 3:05I felt like the scoring
- 3:06windows were fine in the
- 3:08past couple of years.
- 3:11I think they overcorrected
- 3:12because obviously they went
- 3:13from 10% to 25%.
- 3:15But at the same time,
- 3:17what are we trying to do here?
- 3:20The ultimate goal of the CrossFit Games,
- 3:22and I understand the community and stuff,
- 3:25but the ultimate goal is to
- 3:26find the fittest
- 3:27individuals in the world.
- 3:30they're going to find a way
- 3:30to get the workouts done no
- 3:32matter what the scoring windows are,
- 3:34you know?
- 3:35So ultimately you're serious about it.
- 3:37Well, for sure.
- 3:38Yeah.
- 3:39So, so I'm, you know,
- 3:41I don't think that was necessary.
- 3:43I'm not looking forward to
- 3:44it for individuals at all.
- 3:47I'm not looking forward to
- 3:50age groups and individuals
- 3:51at the same time, especially for us,
- 3:53when you've got a camp,
- 3:55you've got a lot of people in person.
- 3:56It just, it,
- 3:57it's hard to, it's hard to do time-wise.
- 4:01Um, but even more so than that, it's just,
- 4:03just, you know,
- 4:04like you want to have
- 4:05focused attention on athletes and people,
- 4:08you know what I mean?
- 4:09Like it is it so that, that I don't love,
- 4:11um, but it is what it is, man, you know?
- 4:14And, and so we're in it now and, you know,
- 4:16we're, we're getting it done.
- 4:18And, um,
- 4:20The workouts were interesting.
- 4:23A bit different than I feel
- 4:24like they have been.
- 4:25Obviously, without the floor plans,
- 4:27I think they're trying to
- 4:28be more inclusive.
- 4:29I think they're trying to
- 4:29take into account
- 4:33you know, the, the ease of,
- 4:35of doing it for whatever
- 4:36affiliates you're in or, you know,
- 4:38wherever you are, as far as not making,
- 4:41you know, not doing handstand walks or,
- 4:43or shuttle runs or things like that.
- 4:45You know, my, my thing though,
- 4:47is it's hard to judge
- 4:49workouts when you haven't
- 4:51seen the full test.
- 4:53And when I say the full test,
- 4:54I mean like what's coming
- 4:55up in semifinals, because you
- 4:58you would hope that the
- 5:02qualifying events are
- 5:05placing the right type of
- 5:07people and athletes in the next stage,
- 5:09right?
- 5:11So I worry a little bit
- 5:12about the fact that we're not seeing
- 5:15Any really heavy barbells,
- 5:17especially Olympic weightlifting,
- 5:19we're not seeing other than
- 5:20ring muscle-ups and not a
- 5:22lot of high-skill gymnastics.
- 5:23I'm curious to see what that
- 5:25looks like at semis.
- 5:26I think that obviously will
- 5:28expose some people and some teams.
- 5:31But at the end of the day, listen,
- 5:33the top 10 teams in the
- 5:36East and the West and
- 5:38various other places,
- 5:39they're going to get through.
- 5:43So your best teams are going
- 5:45to get through for sure.
- 5:46Yeah.
- 5:48I think you're safe to say
- 5:49that on the team side,
- 5:51I think on the individual side,
- 5:52it might be a different story.
- 5:54Worried about the individual side.
- 5:57I don't know how you have a quarter.
- 5:58Now, listen,
- 5:59the individual workouts could
- 6:00be completely different.
- 6:01But from what we've seen here,
- 6:03if it's similar,
- 6:05where we're talking about
- 6:06not a lot of skill, not very heavy,
- 6:12more engine capacity, right?
- 6:15More of that type of...
- 6:17I worry a little bit because
- 6:21take a look at semifinals last year.
- 6:25The programming, even the last two years,
- 6:26it's been very skilled and challenging,
- 6:32heavy.
- 6:35first of all,
- 6:36I hope it's not four workouts.
- 6:37I hope there's five or six
- 6:38scored workouts for quarterfinals, um,
- 6:41to get to semifinals,
- 6:43especially with the cut
- 6:44down fields in Europe and North America.
- 6:47I mean, this is a big stage.
- 6:49You know, there's a lot of,
- 6:51if it's similar to what
- 6:52we've seen now with the teams,
- 6:53you're going to see some
- 6:54big name athletes who don't get through.
- 6:57Uh, and, and, um,
- 7:00which happens, you know, year to year.
- 7:01But, you know,
- 7:03I think I'm hoping that
- 7:06we're not looking at it like, oh,
- 7:07we need to make it
- 7:08inclusive because there's
- 7:0925% where in my opinion, no,
- 7:12like we did that in the open.
- 7:15what we're doing now is we've got to,
- 7:17we've got to, you know,
- 7:18step it up and we've got to
- 7:20create tests that,
- 7:21so we're sending the right
- 7:22athletes to semifinals,
- 7:24you know what I mean?
- 7:24So that, that to me,
- 7:27but I'm curious to see what, you know,
- 7:29what it's going to be.
- 7:29And then obviously we won't
- 7:31know per se until semis,
- 7:33because we get to semis and,
- 7:34Quarters, you know,
- 7:35basically it has absolutely no link.
- 7:38Like it's not an evolution.
- 7:41Then, you know,
- 7:42we'll all throw our hands up and be like,
- 7:44what the hell is going on here, you know?
- 7:47So, yeah, I'm interested,
- 7:49interested to see.
- 7:50But the workouts themselves are fine.
- 7:52I don't have an issue with the workouts.
- 7:55Excuse me.
- 7:56Especially workout one, which was a bear.
- 8:00I think a lot harder than people expected.
- 8:05Very, very challenging.
- 8:06And, you know.
- 8:08So you're hitting all my pet peeves,
- 8:10right?
- 8:11What's that?
- 8:12You're hitting all my pet peeves.
- 8:14Because workout one is the
- 8:16type of workout I want to see in person.
- 8:19Yeah.
- 8:22It's cool.
- 8:22It was cool to watch.
- 8:23And I also think that it's
- 8:25one of those workouts going in,
- 8:27you feel very differently
- 8:28coming away from it than
- 8:29you did going in.
- 8:31I don't think people thought,
- 8:32I don't think people
- 8:33expected to break down.
- 8:35I don't think they
- 8:36necessarily looked at the
- 8:37numbers and said, oh, you know,
- 8:39like I also think there's
- 8:41there's different ways to
- 8:42strategize it now that I've seen it.
- 8:45That that, you know, I would strategize.
- 8:49I think we would strategize
- 8:50a little bit differently
- 8:51after watching one group do it, you know.
- 8:55But that's cool.
- 8:55I like that.
- 8:58the issue now is though the
- 9:00scoring window is so big that, you know,
- 9:02you, you get the opportunity to do that.
- 9:04I wish they didn't, you know,
- 9:05I mean like that's,
- 9:07I feel like that's fine for the open,
- 9:08but I think beyond that, you know,
- 9:10that it should be tight
- 9:11enough that you're not able to repeat,
- 9:14or if you do, you're really punished,
- 9:16you know,
- 9:17like you can't recover well
- 9:19enough to be able to do as
- 9:20well on the next ones.
- 9:21So yeah,
- 9:24know but that that's
- 9:24probably my favorite one of
- 9:26the four um the other ones
- 9:28honestly are just kind of
- 9:29like whatever um I i
- 9:32watched the snatch one
- 9:33today it's it's not
- 9:34honestly for for athletes
- 9:36that would be at
- 9:37semi-finals it's not that
- 9:39it's okay it's not that bad
- 9:40which is fine it doesn't
- 9:41have to be bad doesn't have
- 9:42to brutalize you um but
- 9:45again I just felt like it's
- 9:47kind of a kind of an open
- 9:48style you know it doesn't
- 9:50I felt like we could step
- 9:51that up for quarters and
- 9:53make it a little bit more interesting.
- 9:54Uh, and then the wall ball workout,
- 9:56you know, everyone does, you know,
- 9:58people do a lot of interval training.
- 10:00There's a ton of rest in there.
- 10:01Uh, you're able to attack it pretty well.
- 10:03I, I think you're going to see, uh,
- 10:06very similar times, uh,
- 10:08from the top teams.
- 10:09There's not a lot of
- 10:10separation there for the,
- 10:11for the top teams.
- 10:12It's going to be, you know, minuscule, um,
- 10:15uh,
- 10:16And I like to see workouts that,
- 10:18that create a little bit more separation,
- 10:21you know, where you're like, Oh fuck,
- 10:23they're good.
- 10:24You know, like, you know,
- 10:25that team is good.
- 10:27I think we will see that on
- 10:28the first one though,
- 10:29because I think you're
- 10:30going to see some teams,
- 10:31especially the teams that
- 10:31are like stud muscle ups and who,
- 10:34you know, who can go and,
- 10:36you know,
- 10:37and get 20 around and hold that like, wow,
- 10:40that's going to be fun to watch.
- 10:41And you probably see a couple of teams and,
- 10:43you know, one 90 plus or 200 plus,
- 10:45which is,
- 10:47freaking phenomenal, you know,
- 10:49and I expect that we will see that,
- 10:51you know,
- 10:52probably from the usual suspects
- 10:54that I'm sure we're all thinking about.
- 10:55I mean,
- 10:56Noah's popping into my head is
- 10:57going to kill that.
- 10:58Yeah.
- 10:59I mean, you know, it was Matilda and Lena.
- 11:02I mean,
- 11:03they're all great at ring muscle ups.
- 11:05So, you know, as long as they,
- 11:09as long as they strategize correctly,
- 11:11which I'm sure they will,
- 11:13they should be able to, you know,
- 11:15murder that workout.
- 11:17For that number three,
- 11:18would you have preferred to
- 11:19see either strict handstand
- 11:21push-up or even wall walks?
- 11:23I feel like the breakdown in
- 11:24wall walks and the time
- 11:25that it takes if you aren't
- 11:27speedy could have been separated.
- 11:30I think at this stage,
- 11:33kipping handstand push-ups
- 11:34are ridiculous.
- 11:35I don't think they should be
- 11:36in this stage unless you're
- 11:37doing deficit.
- 11:38I would have been fine with a deficit.
- 11:39Oh, yeah.
- 11:40I'd have been fine with a two-inch deficit,
- 11:44which we've seen in
- 11:44quarterfinals before when
- 11:46we had that lunge workout a
- 11:47few years ago.
- 11:50Walking lunges with kipping,
- 11:52walking lunges, kipping deficit,
- 11:54walking lunges strict.
- 11:56I would have been fine with that.
- 12:00But I feel like the fact
- 12:02that you're alternating partners,
- 12:05strict absolutely would have been fine.
- 12:07I don't think that would
- 12:08have been an issue at all.
- 12:09Uh, and if it is fine, like I don't,
- 12:11that's there,
- 12:13there needs to be some separation.
- 12:14Like you need to punish some
- 12:15people for not, you know, like for,
- 12:17for not having the skills
- 12:19or the capacity to be able
- 12:21to handle something like that.
- 12:22Uh,
- 12:22cause you can't tell me we're going to
- 12:23have a workout at, I mean, I don't think,
- 12:25I don't think we're going
- 12:26to have a workout at semifinals.
- 12:27It's got 50 kipping handstand pushups.
- 12:29I mean, that's a joke.
- 12:30You know, everyone will,
- 12:31will go unbroken or they'll go, you know,
- 12:3430 come down 20, you know, it's just,
- 12:36it's not hard enough.
- 12:38Um,
- 12:38So but deficit, I think,
- 12:41would have done the job for sure.
- 12:42I also am just tired of the
- 12:45nine foot target, you know, for women.
- 12:48I just I mean, I'm like enough already.
- 12:51And and I also think that, you know,
- 12:55the row,
- 12:56while it's nasty at the end and you go,
- 12:59I'm always a fan of
- 13:00calories instead of instead of meters,
- 13:03just like that.
- 13:04in the in these stages um
- 13:07but uh but it was fine I
- 13:09mean I you know I watched
- 13:10it and and it was fine
- 13:11there were very for good
- 13:13teams there's just very few
- 13:14places that hold you up I
- 13:15mean you're basically
- 13:17you're basically just
- 13:18smashing the whole workout
- 13:20and then it's just going to
- 13:21come down to a few seconds
- 13:22of who rose faster and and
- 13:24and your transitions on
- 13:25handstand push-ups because
- 13:26you do have to transition a
- 13:27little more on the second
- 13:28set of handstand push-ups
- 13:30after that fifth the 50 wall balls
- 13:32It's coming off the wall ball,
- 13:34so you'll have to
- 13:35transition a little bit more.
- 13:37But generally speaking,
- 13:38it's going to be real tight at the top.
- 13:41So when you say fine and you
- 13:43go up an octave,
- 13:45it leads me to believe
- 13:46there's a little stank
- 13:47behind whatever you're
- 13:48thinking about these workouts,
- 13:50but we'll let that go.
- 13:52No, I don't.
- 13:55I just think at this stage,
- 13:59you have to make it –
- 14:01You have to prepare people
- 14:02for what they're going to
- 14:03see in the next stage.
- 14:05You have to get athletes who
- 14:08will be able –
- 14:10To do the movements, you know,
- 14:13to perform the movements at
- 14:15the next stage and not go
- 14:16in and stare at a wall.
- 14:17Nobody wants to see that, you know.
- 14:19So ultimately speaking,
- 14:22I just feel like that's, I mean,
- 14:25last year,
- 14:26think about what you had at semis.
- 14:29Seated legless with a legless descent.
- 14:31For teams, just you had that.
- 14:33You had strict wall-facing
- 14:35handstand push-ups.
- 14:36You had a ton of ring muscle-ups.
- 14:39You had handstand walks with pirouettes.
- 14:42I mean,
- 14:42you had very challenging high-skill
- 14:46bodyweight movements.
- 14:47We have none of that in this.
- 14:51Like, zero.
- 14:52Zero.
- 14:53I mean,
- 14:53are we still calling a ring
- 14:55muscle-up a high-skill
- 14:57gymnastics movement at this point?
- 14:59I don't think so.
- 15:00I think that's just – it's
- 15:01like a bar – same thing.
- 15:03I also think that we're at
- 15:07the point now where –
- 15:09you know, if I don't want to go backwards,
- 15:12you know,
- 15:13like you've seen these really
- 15:14cool movements last year,
- 15:16like we should be building
- 15:17on those things.
- 15:18You know,
- 15:18it's kind of like where I used to
- 15:20feel like you'd see it at
- 15:21the games and then you'd
- 15:22see it at semifinals the next year,
- 15:24right?
- 15:24You'd see it at the games,
- 15:26you'd see it at semifinals.
- 15:27And then maybe a year or two later,
- 15:28you might even see it in the open,
- 15:30something like that.
- 15:33You know, we saw it in,
- 15:34in what we saw in semis in
- 15:36the games last year, we're not seeing in,
- 15:38in quarters at all you know
- 15:40um so we'll see we'll see
- 15:42you know what that means um
- 15:44the workouts themselves are
- 15:45fine I don't have an issue
- 15:47with them what I have an
- 15:48issue with is is you know
- 15:50if we're planning on doing
- 15:52some of the same things we
- 15:52did in semis in the games
- 15:54next year then I have an
- 15:54issue because I just don't
- 15:55think it's hard enough yeah
- 15:58I feel like so many of the teams are
- 16:03they almost like are going
- 16:04to walk in at this point.
- 16:05It's 60% of the teams that
- 16:06sign up are going in.
- 16:08I mean,
- 16:08you could make it harder and there
- 16:10might be teams that get a
- 16:12few reps kind of like open
- 16:15for individuals that just
- 16:17kind of sneak in just
- 16:17because there wasn't a
- 16:18whole lot of competition.
- 16:20Absolutely.
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:22I totally agree with that.
- 16:24But I think...
- 16:26So my thought process is like, I,
- 16:29I'm not looking at it in
- 16:30the matter of like how many teams or who,
- 16:32which teams I'm looking at it more from,
- 16:34from like the programming
- 16:37of an event or a programming of a,
- 16:39of a competition tells a story.
- 16:42And so the, the,
- 16:44the evolution and the
- 16:45progression starts in the open.
- 16:47Then it goes, builds to quarters,
- 16:49then it builds the semis,
- 16:50and then it builds to the games.
- 16:53Um, my concern is that, you know,
- 16:55and I'm not saying we
- 16:56should be doing seated legless in,
- 17:00in quarters,
- 17:01but should we not be touching a rope?
- 17:03What if there's a ton of
- 17:04stuff on the rope?
- 17:05Should we not be touching
- 17:07handstand walking?
- 17:08What if there's the ramp and high level,
- 17:11you know, uh,
- 17:13should we not be doing
- 17:13strict handstand pushups?
- 17:14What if there's strict deficit?
- 17:16You're going from kipping
- 17:18now to strict deficit.
- 17:19Do you understand what I'm saying?
- 17:21So I just feel like the progression,
- 17:23I don't see necessarily the
- 17:25progression that I would love to see.
- 17:27But that's just my opinion.
- 17:31I'm sure that if you speak to 10 other...
- 17:35you know, coaches or quote unquote experts,
- 17:38you know,
- 17:38they're going to give you 10
- 17:40different opinions.
- 17:42That just happens to be mine.
- 17:43And I generally look at
- 17:45programming an event as an evolution,
- 17:48as a progression, it should progress.
- 17:50And, you know,
- 17:52from qualifying stages to
- 17:53the competition stage.
- 17:56And I feel like we already had the open.
- 18:00which was super basic and it was fine.
- 18:03But now I just feel like we
- 18:05could have stepped it up a
- 18:06little bit with some of these movements.
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:09I do feel like – I feel like
- 18:12for teams specifically,
- 18:14like I've heard a lot of people say,
- 18:15we've hinged a ton.
- 18:16Like we're doing more deadlifts.
- 18:17We're doing more dumbbell snatches.
- 18:20And in my mind, like for teams, yeah,
- 18:24maybe like –
- 18:26eight of your athletes in
- 18:27your affiliate did that and
- 18:28put the score up.
- 18:29But of the four that are
- 18:31going to be on your team, did they do it?
- 18:34We kind of do need to retest it.
- 18:36Right.
- 18:36And I also think,
- 18:37what if this is the year of the deadlift?
- 18:39What if at semis we see 405
- 18:41and 275 pound deadlifts?
- 18:43And at the games we see the 475,
- 18:43315 again.
- 18:44So that would make sense to me,
- 18:45where you're going from
- 18:53the, the open to quarters.
- 18:56You know what I mean?
- 18:57Like I'm just saying maybe it's the,
- 18:59you know,
- 18:59Dave loves deadlifts and I think
- 19:01Dave is probably more in
- 19:02control now of things.
- 19:04So the way that I look at it
- 19:05is maybe it's the year of the deadlift,
- 19:07you know?
- 19:07So you're going to see at each,
- 19:09at each stage, you know,
- 19:11an evolution of a deadlift workout,
- 19:15which I'm fine with.
- 19:16I'm totally fine.
- 19:17I have no issues with that whatsoever.
- 19:20I'm a bit surprised we're not seeing,
- 19:24a heavier barbell, you know,
- 19:27clean or snatch or overhead
- 19:29squad or something a little
- 19:31bit more skilled with a barbell.
- 19:33But maybe we're not going to
- 19:34see that at semis.
- 19:36Perhaps we're not.
- 19:36You know,
- 19:37we had that year that was all dumbbells,
- 19:39right?
- 19:39I mean, so maybe that's coming.
- 19:41I mean, you know, you never know.
- 19:43Um,
- 19:43so it's hard to really give
- 19:46constructive criticism
- 19:47without knowing the next stage.
- 19:50Um, but my, my inclination or my, you know,
- 19:53I have a sixth sense a
- 19:54little bit that we're
- 19:56probably going to look back
- 19:57on some of this and be like, Hmm,
- 19:59could have done that a
- 20:00little bit differently
- 20:01knowing what we know now.
- 20:02So that's kind of it.
- 20:05So to wrap up this team thing,
- 20:08one of the handful of
- 20:10things that makes teams
- 20:11hard to follow for the
- 20:13season is we don't know
- 20:14who's on the teams.
- 20:15Nobody has to declare – you
- 20:17don't have to declare until
- 20:18you go to semis or – it's
- 20:21something goofy like that.
- 20:22Well, you got six, so you can –
- 20:26you've got but it doesn't
- 20:27have to be the same group
- 20:28from quarters doesn't have
- 20:29to be the same group at
- 20:31semis doesn't have to be
- 20:32the same group at the games
- 20:34um it just has to be four
- 20:36of the six so as you know
- 20:38you can kind of mix and
- 20:39match in that so so you
- 20:41have two teams in vegas
- 20:43three three yeah we have
- 20:45three in-house teams so I
- 20:48have rhino service dogs yep
- 20:51And that I have a question about.
- 20:53Yeah.
- 20:53So big fans of CJ and Mitch.
- 20:56Yeah.
- 20:57Those are two of my favorite dudes ever.
- 20:58Yep.
- 21:00So I've been following them.
- 21:01They made a post with Ava
- 21:03George and Carson.
- 21:04Yes.
- 21:06yet on the open leaderboard,
- 21:08Carson doesn't appear, and it's Kyra.
- 21:12Yeah.
- 21:13Kyra's going individual.
- 21:14Kyra's going individual.
- 21:16Kyra's the alternate.
- 21:17So she was on – of the six,
- 21:20she had better scores,
- 21:22but Carson is doing quarters.
- 21:26Carson will do semis.
- 21:29And, you know, they're like –
- 21:33a team they, they, you know,
- 21:35Carson would do the games too.
- 21:36So yeah.
- 21:37Okay.
- 21:37That was just of the six that were,
- 21:41you know,
- 21:42the six that you have to declare, uh,
- 21:45on the team and I'm sure
- 21:47that's all over the place
- 21:48because I I think in a
- 21:49couple of scores that even
- 21:51down at peak did Monica
- 21:52have a couple of the scores
- 21:54that that uh I'm sure yeah
- 21:56I mean I think it's
- 21:57everywhere I think you'll
- 21:58probably see um you know I
- 22:00think Kristen Holt that had
- 22:01some scores for Oslo uh
- 22:03even though she's not I
- 22:04don't think she's gonna be
- 22:05on the team I may be wrong
- 22:06maybe she's on the team
- 22:07But I think she probably,
- 22:09if she's competing,
- 22:09she's probably competing in the Masters,
- 22:12I would think.
- 22:13If she's competing,
- 22:14I don't know if she is.
- 22:16But anyway,
- 22:17I think you're going to see
- 22:18that a lot of places.
- 22:19And then obviously the
- 22:21athletes that go individual
- 22:22go individual.
- 22:23And then, you know, you'll see the,
- 22:26you'll probably see like
- 22:27the real team this week and
- 22:30then at semis for sure.
- 22:32So you guys actually only
- 22:36put six on your roster for
- 22:38each of those teams, correct?
- 22:39Yeah.
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:41So you guys did it the right way.
- 22:42I appreciate that.
- 22:44Were there people who put more?
- 22:47Oh, yeah.
- 22:47There's people who put like 30.
- 22:50And you honestly have no clue.
- 22:53There's no restriction.
- 22:55If your affiliate's only
- 22:56putting together one team,
- 22:57it's just the best scores
- 22:58from your affiliate.
- 23:00Wow.
- 23:02You have multiple teams,
- 23:03so you have to separate them out early.
- 23:05Yeah.
- 23:07But like Peak,
- 23:08I think they only have one team.
- 23:10So anybody who works out
- 23:11there can contribute to the score.
- 23:13Well, listen,
- 23:14if anybody beats Noah or Tola,
- 23:15I guess that got more power to them.
- 23:18I can't imagine that that's happening.
- 23:20But like Annika could beat.
- 23:22Yes.
- 23:23Right.
- 23:23For sure.
- 23:24I mean,
- 23:24she did on the majority of the workouts.
- 23:27So then I have Rhino CrossFit dogs.
- 23:30They,
- 23:31is it a form of the team that went
- 23:33last year?
- 23:34That's just Roth.
- 23:35Who's still on that team.
- 23:36So I have Roth and Nikita.
- 23:38Yep.
- 23:40Most of the scores were Allie.
- 23:42Is she going team or Indy?
- 23:43No, she's individual.
- 23:44So there's, uh, um, Alina, um, Alina Ward,
- 23:50who was at semis last year.
- 23:51She was a semis athlete in the Northwest.
- 23:53And then, uh, Emily,
- 23:55her name is Emily Torres, um,
- 23:57who didn't compete last
- 23:59year because of an injury.
- 24:00Um,
- 24:01So I did pretty well the
- 24:04year before in quarterfinals,
- 24:06didn't make semis,
- 24:06but she just started
- 24:10working with one of our coaches,
- 24:13Brendan and Brendan Snyder.
- 24:16And Emily's great.
- 24:17She she's great.
- 24:18She lives full-time in Colorado,
- 24:21but obviously commutes here
- 24:23and has been under the
- 24:25underdog's hat for a few months.
- 24:28So those are the four who
- 24:30are competing this week in quarterfinals.
- 24:35Well, Zombie, just to clarify,
- 24:37it is D-A-W-G, not D-O-G.
- 24:40Yeah, D-A-W-G.
- 24:42It's less funny when you get
- 24:44the right spelling.
- 24:45Yeah.
- 24:49So who's the third team?
- 24:51So the third team is another –
- 24:56can't remember that you know
- 24:57they made up those names I
- 24:58mean that's another dogs
- 24:59team out of camp rhino uh
- 25:03dakota cole uh sarah and
- 25:07skylar those are our our
- 25:09four um and there I i would
- 25:12say you know I mean listen
- 25:14if they get through to
- 25:14semis we'll be ecstatic you
- 25:16know um and they're busting
- 25:17their ass to do so but for
- 25:19sure you know like that
- 25:22this this week is is
- 25:24more more their season uh
- 25:26and then you know we'll see
- 25:28how it goes especially with
- 25:29them cutting down teams you
- 25:30know down to 30 and so
- 25:32we'll I'll be curious to
- 25:33see um you know how they do
- 25:35but yeah they they've been
- 25:36busting their ass the last
- 25:37two days and you know we're
- 25:39giving them as much support as we can
- 25:42All right,
- 25:42so now we're going to move to
- 25:44the Danielle documentary.
- 25:45Yes, sir.
- 25:49I've been pretty vocal on a
- 25:50couple shows since its
- 25:52airing that I didn't like.
- 25:55I loved the childhood background story.
- 25:58I knew it was bad.
- 26:00I didn't know details until
- 26:02this documentary.
- 26:03So it was very enlightening for me,
- 26:06and I really appreciated
- 26:07getting to know kind of the
- 26:09background behind Danielle.
- 26:11Yeah.
- 26:15I did not care for the
- 26:16CrossFit piece as much,
- 26:17especially when it comes to
- 26:19her relationship with you.
- 26:21Many people have asked me,
- 26:22is it because you're good
- 26:24friends with Justin that
- 26:25you feel that way?
- 26:26I said,
- 26:27probably that has something to do
- 26:28with it.
- 26:29So I will admit that I
- 26:32probably have a bias in that vein.
- 26:36But what I want to do is I
- 26:36want to show one piece of
- 26:38the documentary that
- 26:40It's you explaining what
- 26:41happened and Cooper's response.
- 26:43And that really got me upset.
- 26:46And that's why I just want
- 26:47to explain that.
- 26:48And then we can talk about this.
- 26:51However much you are willing
- 26:53to share after that.
- 26:53Yeah, for sure.
- 26:56So here we go.
- 26:59We were going as a company
- 27:00and where we were going as a brand,
- 27:02I don't think was
- 27:03necessarily the best fit for her.
- 27:07We talked about it, and I said, look, man,
- 27:09you guys should really try
- 27:09to talk through this and figure this out.
- 27:11I think you guys owe it to
- 27:12each other to communicate
- 27:13through this and make it work.
- 27:17So that got me upset, and I will say this.
- 27:22I hung out with you a lot at semis.
- 27:27There were ups and downs
- 27:28with Danielle during that time,
- 27:30and I know that you guys had had talks.
- 27:34When Cooper comes across
- 27:35that way as her agent,
- 27:37My feeling was,
- 27:39isn't it part of your
- 27:40responsibility as her agent
- 27:43to make sure that those
- 27:44conversations are had and
- 27:45that it's not solely on somebody else?
- 27:51Yeah.
- 27:52I mean, well, let me,
- 27:54let me first say this.
- 27:56I thought the documentary
- 27:58was incredibly done.
- 28:00I thought it was fantastic.
- 28:02I thought it was very well done.
- 28:03You know, I, I knew like you, I mean,
- 28:08obviously, you know,
- 28:09I knew a lot about her background,
- 28:11but specific events that
- 28:13happen and some of the stuff that you see,
- 28:15you know, obviously, you know,
- 28:18it was heartbreaking to see
- 28:19a lot of that stuff and, and,
- 28:21I thought it was a, you know,
- 28:25a beautiful story of
- 28:26someone who was able to
- 28:29utilize their God-given gifts, you know,
- 28:32to get them out of a situation that was,
- 28:34you know,
- 28:35highly dysfunctional and where
- 28:37most people would crumble.
- 28:38So, you know, I think it really was,
- 28:42you know, an incredible,
- 28:44it is an incredible story.
- 28:48I have a very different
- 28:49perspective I think of how
- 28:53things were portrayed a little bit,
- 28:56obviously, because I lived it.
- 29:00You know, I always, you know,
- 29:02you have to take into
- 29:03account that obviously this
- 29:05is Danielle's documentary, right?
- 29:08And they put it out and, you know,
- 29:10they want to, you know,
- 29:12I understand obviously that
- 29:14they want to be truthful,
- 29:16but it's always going to
- 29:17come a little bit from a
- 29:18biased perspective,
- 29:19which I totally understand.
- 29:21Every, you know,
- 29:22I would say everybody's documentary,
- 29:23especially if you agree to do it, right?
- 29:25Unless it's somebody who's
- 29:26doing it from the outside
- 29:27where you maybe didn't agree to do it.
- 29:30Um, you know, that, that,
- 29:32that might be a little bit different.
- 29:34Um, you know, I, I was down, I did that,
- 29:37that interview that you saw, uh,
- 29:39was done at Waterpalooza this year.
- 29:41So it's very fresh.
- 29:42I did that.
- 29:43I did that at Waterpalooza and I, I took,
- 29:46it was a long time, you know, um,
- 29:50it was about an hour.
- 29:51I would say about an hour's
- 29:53worth of footage.
- 29:53I was there for, for a very long time.
- 29:55It was very emotional.
- 29:57Um,
- 29:59there were parts of it where I had to stop,
- 30:01you know, they didn't show that,
- 30:02but there were parts of it
- 30:03where I had to take,
- 30:04take five minutes and compose myself.
- 30:07And, you know, I,
- 30:08I tried to be as truthful
- 30:10as possible with, you know, with,
- 30:13without really,
- 30:14I have to be a little bit delicate.
- 30:16It's a couple of years ago and, you know,
- 30:19I've always kind of, you know,
- 30:21I always felt like it
- 30:22wasn't necessarily people's
- 30:23business to know the, the,
- 30:27the ins and outs of the
- 30:27situation in some of the particulars.
- 30:34And I think for me,
- 30:36the toughest part of watching that,
- 30:39and I appreciated what
- 30:40Danielle said to Lauren
- 30:42Khalil in her interview.
- 30:47I thought she was very
- 30:48honest and without question,
- 30:53There are certain things
- 30:54that I take blame for.
- 30:55I think I could have been
- 30:59more transparent and honest
- 31:03throughout that season with
- 31:07some of the feedback that I
- 31:08was getting from athletes
- 31:09and coaches within the camp
- 31:12who felt that they weren't
- 31:13getting treated the right way.
- 31:16And I could have had some of
- 31:17those conversations instead of being like,
- 31:19you know what,
- 31:20I'll handle it at the end of the season.
- 31:21It'll be fine.
- 31:22You know, we'll get there.
- 31:24Because the truth was for
- 31:25the majority of that year,
- 31:26Danielle and I were fine.
- 31:27There was never an issue
- 31:29between Danielle and I.
- 31:31And she had mentioned in
- 31:34there that she wasn't
- 31:35necessarily extremely happy
- 31:36with more athletes coming
- 31:39in and the camp getting
- 31:40bigger and all those things.
- 31:41And I can understand that
- 31:44from her perspective.
- 31:45The one thing that I felt like...
- 31:50wasn't addressed that bothered me.
- 31:54And it still bothers me to this day.
- 31:56I would have loved to hear
- 31:59her or Cooper kind of talk
- 32:00about a little bit,
- 32:02taking responsibility for
- 32:04some of the behavior and
- 32:05some of the actions.
- 32:06They almost made it sound like, oh, well,
- 32:08she just got kicked out of the camp.
- 32:10No,
- 32:11like there were a lot of things that
- 32:13went into that.
- 32:14I mean,
- 32:15you think I wanted to kick her out
- 32:16of the camp?
- 32:17And at the end of the day, it also didn't,
- 32:19it didn't,
- 32:19that wasn't necessarily the case.
- 32:21There was a, you know,
- 32:26there was an opportunity
- 32:27there to change behavior
- 32:29and apologize to people.
- 32:31And that didn't take place.
- 32:33And when that didn't take place,
- 32:35it just felt like there
- 32:35wasn't anything else we
- 32:37could do at that time.
- 32:40There were some things that
- 32:41happened that I was very
- 32:44upset at the time.
- 32:45And I probably could have
- 32:46handled my anger better, to be honest.
- 32:48But I don't regret the
- 32:49decision because it had to be done,
- 32:52I felt like.
- 32:53And when I look back,
- 32:55I still feel like it had to be done.
- 32:58That all being said,
- 33:01when you hear me talk in
- 33:02the doc and it's still, I love Danielle.
- 33:07I'm angry at her still.
- 33:08There's no question about it
- 33:09because I feel like there's
- 33:11some apologies that still
- 33:13need to be made in certain respects.
- 33:15And I'm sure she's probably
- 33:16upset with me and I'm fine with that.
- 33:18That's okay.
- 33:19And I feel like we're far
- 33:21enough removed that I would
- 33:23love to sit down and have a
- 33:24conversation and
- 33:26I feel like we're both in a place,
- 33:29at least I know I am,
- 33:30where I could sit down and have a civil,
- 33:33cordial conversation and
- 33:35talk about some of those
- 33:36things and talk about some
- 33:37of the mistakes that were
- 33:38made and take
- 33:38responsibility for the
- 33:40mistakes that I made.
- 33:42But I would like to see that reciprocated.
- 33:44and I and I i guess that's
- 33:45what's frustrating to me is
- 33:46I just I felt like that
- 33:48could have been done in the
- 33:48documentary it could have
- 33:49been done without throwing
- 33:50her under the bus too you
- 33:52know we just could have
- 33:53been like listen there was
- 33:54there were some things that
- 33:55I did that I felt bad about
- 33:57and you know like I can
- 33:58understand some of the
- 33:59stuff you know I wish it
- 34:00had maybe been handled
- 34:01differently like that's all
- 34:03good I was just frustrated
- 34:04that that wasn't addressed in it um
- 34:09But I don't love rehashing
- 34:11it because I don't want people to be like,
- 34:15again, what happened and blah, blah,
- 34:17blah.
- 34:17You know what?
- 34:17It's not really your
- 34:19business to know what happened.
- 34:21And I'm not willing to talk
- 34:24about some of the specifics because,
- 34:26first of all,
- 34:27I think you should never be judged.
- 34:32you know by unless it's you
- 34:35know a catastrophic mistake
- 34:37right or or but you
- 34:38shouldn't be judged I think
- 34:41by most people for for some
- 34:42of the worst mistakes that
- 34:43you make because you have
- 34:46time to redeem yourself you
- 34:47have time to to change and
- 34:49learn from those mistakes
- 34:51um and I i think um
- 34:55I think them just asking me
- 34:57to be a part of it was a
- 35:00huge leap of faith that I
- 35:02wouldn't just fucking throw
- 35:03Danielle under the bus.
- 35:06I think it was brave.
- 35:07I also think that, like I said,
- 35:12some of the interviews that
- 35:13I've seen with her talking about, I mean,
- 35:15it was very touching to me
- 35:16to hear that stuff.
- 35:18It was very meaningful to me to hear that
- 35:22she, I, you know,
- 35:25even though things didn't end up as,
- 35:29you know,
- 35:30as we expected that she took a
- 35:32lot from the time that we spent together.
- 35:36Um,
- 35:36and I'd like to think that I had a
- 35:38mostly positive effect on her in,
- 35:41in her career.
- 35:43Uh, and, um,
- 35:45And I am fully in a place
- 35:49where I would like to get
- 35:51to that point where she and
- 35:53I can see each other and
- 35:55hug and feel some of those
- 35:58feelings that we have.
- 35:59Because again, I...
- 36:05I really,
- 36:06I want nothing but the best for
- 36:08her without question.
- 36:09You know, I,
- 36:10I think there's obviously some,
- 36:12some anger that's still
- 36:13there from some of the
- 36:14things and some of the
- 36:15conversations that I think
- 36:17we still need to have or some, you know,
- 36:18but, but at the end of the day, you know,
- 36:21I'm, um,
- 36:22I'm still very grateful to have met her,
- 36:25to have known her,
- 36:26to have been able to coach her.
- 36:27She's an incredible athlete.
- 36:28You know, she's just a unique person.
- 36:31Uh, and, uh,
- 36:34you know, I hope that at some point we can,
- 36:37we can have a conversation
- 36:38and I'd like to do it in person.
- 36:40And, and I, you know, I hope that, uh,
- 36:42hope she's willing to do that.
- 36:46So the last thing I'm going
- 36:46to say on this is I think
- 36:49probably what also
- 36:50contributed to my feelings
- 36:51watching the documentary is
- 36:53I watched the interview
- 36:53with Lauren first that came
- 36:55out before the documentary came out.
- 36:57And in that interview, she was,
- 36:59it was very touching and almost like,
- 37:05not almost like she missed
- 37:06you a lot as a coach.
- 37:08We miss her.
- 37:09And someone who cared about her so much.
- 37:13And she talked about no
- 37:14other coaches she had after
- 37:16that cared about her.
- 37:18Like you cared about her
- 37:19because the way you cared
- 37:20about her was real, you know?
- 37:23And when she said that, I was like,
- 37:25Oh my gosh, like she's, she's B it's,
- 37:28it's becoming aware to her that,
- 37:31that that relationship was pretty good.
- 37:35Yeah.
- 37:36And then when the
- 37:36documentary came out and
- 37:37that was just kind of glanced over,
- 37:39I think that's why it
- 37:42caught me off guard and shocked me a bit.
- 37:46Cause I was hopeful that like,
- 37:48maybe like we could get to
- 37:50a bygones be bygones and
- 37:53maybe not coach her again
- 37:54or anything like that,
- 37:55but at least be able to, like you say,
- 37:58be friendly when you see her,
- 37:59give her a hug.
- 38:00Um,
- 38:03Yeah, I was very touched by,
- 38:04by what she said in the,
- 38:06in the interview.
- 38:06Um, yeah, I'm not going to lie with,
- 38:09you know, I, I definitely,
- 38:11there were some, some waterworks,
- 38:12you know, hearing that stuff and,
- 38:16you know, I think it's hard, excuse me,
- 38:20in that, in that form, you know,
- 38:23maybe in that, in that documentary form,
- 38:27um,
- 38:30I don't know.
- 38:30I, I, I understand what you're saying.
- 38:32And I,
- 38:32I do think there was an opportunity there,
- 38:34you know, to,
- 38:35to take some more responsibility.
- 38:36I think that's the thing that,
- 38:38that I will continue to
- 38:39kind of talk about that, that where I,
- 38:42where I felt a little bit, you know,
- 38:44disappointed in that, in that sense.
- 38:48But the hearing her say the
- 38:50things she did to Lauren
- 38:51and knowing that I had that
- 38:53positive impact and that effect on her,
- 38:55cause I felt it too.
- 38:56Yeah.
- 38:59It wasn't make-believe.
- 39:00It's the way I felt.
- 39:02You guys acted the same
- 39:04behind closed doors with
- 39:06each other as you did as
- 39:07what people see out on the floor.
- 39:09Absolutely.
- 39:09I can remember specific
- 39:10workouts and specific things
- 39:18that I knew I just felt in
- 39:21tune with her emotionally, you know,
- 39:24to be able to say the
- 39:25things she needed to hear
- 39:26at the right times,
- 39:27especially during workouts
- 39:29when she was training,
- 39:29when she was practicing.
- 39:30And, you know,
- 39:31it's not stuff that I would
- 39:32repeat and it's not stuff
- 39:33that you would say to other
- 39:34athletes necessarily
- 39:35because they won't respond that way.
- 39:37You know, she's a different animal,
- 39:39you know,
- 39:39and there were things that you
- 39:40needed to say.
- 39:41And I mean, she even talks about it.
- 39:42I don't remember if it was
- 39:44in the documentary when she
- 39:45talks about it or if it's in,
- 39:48she's talked about it before where,
- 39:52you know, Danielle is not,
- 39:53she doesn't respond to like
- 39:57pie in the sky kind of, you know, that,
- 40:00that self-help book, you know,
- 40:03like the secret type
- 40:05thinking where it's like, you know,
- 40:07I'm the prettiest and I
- 40:08think I'm the best.
- 40:09And if I do this, it's no,
- 40:10she didn't respond to that.
- 40:12Like she responded more to
- 40:14tough love than anything else.
- 40:15And there were specific
- 40:17times where that needed to happen.
- 40:18And then there were specific
- 40:19times where like,
- 40:20I had to appeal that to
- 40:21that animal instinct, kind of like,
- 40:23that Michael Jordan type thing where like,
- 40:26she needed to have that
- 40:27chip on her shoulder to be able to like,
- 40:30feel like, Oh yeah,
- 40:31that's the way they feel about me.
- 40:32And I'm gonna fucking step on their neck.
- 40:34Like she just has that in her, you know,
- 40:37which I loved, like, I just loved it,
- 40:39you know?
- 40:40And so I felt like I could,
- 40:41I could trigger that at specific moments.
- 40:44And, and I felt like,
- 40:46You know,
- 40:46but I also was able to – she knew
- 40:49how much I cared about her.
- 40:51She knew that it was real and genuine.
- 40:52And she knew how much Ashley
- 40:54cared about her, my wife,
- 40:55and how much my kids cared about her.
- 40:57And Ivy dyed her damn hair blue, you know,
- 41:00like when – you know, my daughter,
- 41:02when she went to semis.
- 41:05And, you know, I just –
- 41:08so it was very painful and very emotional,
- 41:11the whole thing.
- 41:12And it has been, you know, ever since,
- 41:14to be honest, I mean,
- 41:15there's a part of me that, you know,
- 41:17we'll always think what if, you know,
- 41:19because I felt like we were
- 41:22on this trajectory and she
- 41:23was making this incredible growth.
- 41:25And I mean,
- 41:26obviously she's still one of
- 41:27the best in the sport.
- 41:28I mean, that's not to say that, you know,
- 41:29that I maybe, you know,
- 41:31could have gotten her on
- 41:32the podium or maybe more.
- 41:33I mean,
- 41:34I know she dealt with some health issues,
- 41:35et cetera.
- 41:36Um,
- 41:38But like I said,
- 41:42when I started working with her,
- 41:45my intention was I'll be
- 41:47with her for the rest of her career.
- 41:48And I felt like we had a great connection.
- 41:54or as good a connection as,
- 41:56as you can have with Danielle,
- 41:57because there's always going to be some,
- 42:00she just, you know,
- 42:00there's always going to be
- 42:01some volatility.
- 42:02There's always going to be
- 42:03some drama and that's okay.
- 42:04That's who she is.
- 42:05It's part of what makes her great.
- 42:06Part of,
- 42:07part of what makes her such a
- 42:08unique individual and, and,
- 42:10and why people, you know,
- 42:12either love her or hate her.
- 42:13You know, you,
- 42:14you generally don't have
- 42:15like blah feelings toward Danielle.
- 42:18It's, it's generally,
- 42:19she's very polarizing.
- 42:20It's one at one end of the
- 42:21spectrum or the other.
- 42:23Um,
- 42:23but that's what makes an interesting
- 42:24individuals.
- 42:25You know, we don't honestly,
- 42:27we don't have enough of that in,
- 42:28in CrossFit.
- 42:29Like, I feel like we need more of that.
- 42:31You know, it's, it's good for the sport.
- 42:32It grows the sport.
- 42:33It creates more visibility.
- 42:35Um, but yeah, but anyway, I mean, I could,
- 42:40we could go on and on and I
- 42:42could talk a lot about it.
- 42:43That's career view mirror.
- 42:45Yeah.
- 42:45But looking at your windshield,
- 42:47you've got a lot to look forward to.
- 42:50Yeah.
- 42:50You've got two athletes, one male,
- 42:52one female poised to podium.
- 42:55They are on the precipice of a great year,
- 42:59right?
- 43:01Yeah.
- 43:02I mean, you know, I, I think, uh,
- 43:04I don't want to get ahead of myself,
- 43:06but I mean, listen, uh,
- 43:08Um, you know, they're both really,
- 43:10really good, you know?
- 43:11Um, I mean,
- 43:12whenever you talk about
- 43:13athletes that are ranked in
- 43:16the top five in the world, you know,
- 43:17you're talking about
- 43:18obviously special athletes, uh, you know,
- 43:21and, uh, the, the biggest thing from here,
- 43:25and I think this is just the way most,
- 43:26you know, it's, it's,
- 43:28it's the way most coaches will feel.
- 43:32And I know the way I feel is
- 43:35that the key is now getting
- 43:39them to semifinals and the
- 43:42games as healthy as humanly possible.
- 43:44Like, you know, the work, you know,
- 43:49you're talking about like,
- 43:50Ricky's a little bit
- 43:51different because Ricky's a
- 43:53bit more seasoned.
- 43:55And with Alex, there are still some things,
- 43:58I think, trajectory-wise.
- 43:59She's still more on this
- 44:01type of trajectory.
- 44:03You know, like, I mean,
- 44:04it's wild to see what her
- 44:05strength numbers are doing.
- 44:06And, you know, I mean,
- 44:08she's just – I don't know
- 44:10in the next couple years.
- 44:11You know,
- 44:11and I – people get on me a little bit,
- 44:14I think,
- 44:14when I say this because they're
- 44:16always like,
- 44:16you're putting so much pressure on.
- 44:17It's not pressure.
- 44:18I mean –
- 44:20Pressure is a privilege, first of all,
- 44:21and expectations are a good thing.
- 44:24It just means that you're good.
- 44:27I think she has the
- 44:27opportunity to kind of
- 44:28redefine the sport for when
- 44:31you talk about someone
- 44:33who's as big and as strong as she is.
- 44:36And I think ultimately what
- 44:37she's going to be able to do and not yet,
- 44:39but in another year or two.
- 44:41That's not to say she can't
- 44:42podium this year.
- 44:43I'm just saying she's
- 44:43nowhere near where she's going to be.
- 44:46I think Ricky is, you know,
- 44:47he's in the peak of his career.
- 44:49So, you know,
- 44:50I think Ricky would have won
- 44:52the games last year,
- 44:52and that's with all respect
- 44:54to Jeff and Roman.
- 44:56But when you look at the programming,
- 44:58there wasn't a bad event at
- 44:59the games for Ricky.
- 45:00In fact,
- 45:01there were five or six events that
- 45:02Ricky would have won.
- 45:03Like,
- 45:04I don't even have a question about that.
- 45:06He wins the game,
- 45:07and I don't think it would
- 45:08have been close.
- 45:08Yeah.
- 45:10now you don't know if you're
- 45:11ever going to get that
- 45:12again you know that's just
- 45:13the way it is uh and also
- 45:15you know it just depends it
- 45:16depends on are you healthy
- 45:18at the time you're feeling
- 45:19really good at the time you
- 45:20know like he's been
- 45:21battling a few injuries
- 45:22this year since wadapalooza
- 45:24you know we're not going to
- 45:25talk the specifics but it's
- 45:26been a bit up and down
- 45:28honestly over the last
- 45:29several weeks and you know
- 45:31so we've got to get through
- 45:33quarters I think honestly
- 45:35for both of them
- 45:38I mean, they're both really good,
- 45:39so they'll be fine,
- 45:40but I'm not sure you're
- 45:40going to see the type of
- 45:41performance necessarily
- 45:43that you're used to seeing
- 45:43with them because they're
- 45:44both kind of dealing with
- 45:45some nagging things right now.
- 45:47But I think the nagging
- 45:49things are nowhere near
- 45:51serious enough that we're
- 45:52not going to get them to 100% by semis.
- 45:55And then my goal is to have
- 45:57them feeling as confident
- 45:59in their bodies as humanly
- 46:01possible to be able to
- 46:02handle whatever test comes at them
- 46:05In Dallas,
- 46:07and I think it's a fine line
- 46:08that you see with with some
- 46:10athletes going into the games,
- 46:12where you've got to be
- 46:13ready for the volume,
- 46:14but you have to be at your
- 46:15physical tip top shape,
- 46:17you can't be overtrained
- 46:19and you can't be crushed.
- 46:20And I think you see half the
- 46:22field come into the games are done.
- 46:24They're done before they even start.
- 46:26And you can see it on day one or day two.
- 46:28I think we saw it with some
- 46:29big names last year,
- 46:30and I'm not going to talk
- 46:31about who it was,
- 46:32but we saw some big names
- 46:34last year who you looked at
- 46:35and you were like,
- 46:35what the hell is going on?
- 46:37And it just,
- 46:38I think it just comes from you going,
- 46:39you're over-trained,
- 46:41you're not feeling great,
- 46:42you have a bad first day and you're done.
- 46:44And my key is going in,
- 46:46having them feeling as good
- 46:47as humanly possible.
- 46:48And that, you know, I've kind of,
- 46:52kind of tinkered a little bit with,
- 46:54with volume and with
- 46:56cutting down specific things this year,
- 46:58as far as Metcons doing a
- 46:59little bit more
- 47:00monostructural just to stay healthy.
- 47:02And, um, I feel like, you know,
- 47:05I feel like that's helping.
- 47:06I feel like taking more rest
- 47:07days is helping.
- 47:08I think, um,
- 47:10not being glued to the, not,
- 47:13not feeling like you have
- 47:15to do what's on the page.
- 47:16If your body that day
- 47:18doesn't feel like it's
- 47:19going to benefit you,
- 47:21which I think a lot of
- 47:21people are married to the program.
- 47:24And, and if they look at the program,
- 47:26they're like, fuck,
- 47:26if I don't do the program,
- 47:27I'm not going to get better.
- 47:29And that sometimes is a
- 47:30disservice to them.
- 47:31So there's a lot more stuff by fuel,
- 47:34especially with those two this year.
- 47:37And yeah,
- 47:39So yeah,
- 47:40I'm obviously extremely optimistic
- 47:43that if they are feeling
- 47:46great and if they are healthy,
- 47:48which I expect them to be
- 47:50and intend them to be,
- 47:52they both have the full capacity to
- 47:57So I'm going to, we're,
- 47:58we're coming up on the hour already,
- 47:59so we're going to try rapid
- 48:01fire with Justin.
- 48:02Okay.
- 48:02I'm going to hit you with
- 48:03some quick questions.
- 48:05I'm going to start with one
- 48:06in the chat and I'm going to build on it.
- 48:08And that is serious question.
- 48:10Does Justin ever get tired
- 48:11of coaching or bored of it?
- 48:14No.
- 48:17So then I'm going to follow
- 48:17up with that is you have
- 48:19Ricky who had to sit out last year,
- 48:22injured, couldn't participate,
- 48:24probably going nuts after
- 48:26all he's been through in his career.
- 48:28You have that on one side.
- 48:30You have this up-and-comer
- 48:31on the other side who
- 48:32everything is brand new,
- 48:34going into it all,
- 48:35doesn't even know what she's capable of.
- 48:40Is that what makes coaching great?
- 48:44I think the ability to be
- 48:46able to help someone reach
- 48:48their maximum potential,
- 48:50not just in sports, but also in life,
- 48:53you know,
- 48:53I just feel like that to me is
- 48:55how to get bored of that, you know?
- 48:58Now, listen, without question,
- 49:01I run a business too.
- 49:03So I get tired of doing a
- 49:06lot of the backend stuff,
- 49:08the stuff that's not the fun stuff,
- 49:11like doing payroll or handling,
- 49:15dealing with social media
- 49:16or doing that kind of stuff, which is not,
- 49:18I don't love.
- 49:19But the coaching side of
- 49:22things is the great joy that I have.
- 49:26I mean, listen, being in the gym, I mean,
- 49:33on a daily basis with Alex,
- 49:34and I wish I was – Ricky's different.
- 49:37He's in Australia.
- 49:39We talk all the time,
- 49:40but it's not quite the same.
- 49:42But being able to be in the
- 49:43gym and see the progress
- 49:45that Alex has made, I mean,
- 49:47I always say it's like the
- 49:49best part of my week is
- 49:52watching her progress and
- 49:53seeing the things that she does.
- 49:54And obviously that –
- 49:56That spans to all the
- 49:57athletes that I coach, you know,
- 49:58with her and Ricky and
- 49:59Sarah and Caitlin and Braun, et cetera,
- 50:02you know.
- 50:02And, you know, there's more, obviously.
- 50:04But I, you know,
- 50:08just see them being able to
- 50:09achieve the things that
- 50:11they set their minds to and
- 50:12the goals and that stuff.
- 50:14I know I don't ever get tired of that.
- 50:17So Jake Chapman asks,
- 50:19do you still coach any
- 50:20plebes getting their first pull up?
- 50:23I don't.
- 50:24I haven't in a long time.
- 50:26But when I owned an affiliate,
- 50:28I taught foundations for 11 years.
- 50:31So that was like every day.
- 50:33That was one of my favorite
- 50:34things was coaching.
- 50:36you know,
- 50:36being able to be on the ground
- 50:37floor with people who just
- 50:39get into CrossFit,
- 50:39like being able to be that
- 50:41influence when they first start, you know,
- 50:44I enjoyed that as much as I
- 50:45do coaching elite athletes,
- 50:46to be honest with you,
- 50:47like that was just so cool.
- 50:49So I haven't done that in a while.
- 50:52But, but I do love doing that, you know,
- 50:54for sure.
- 50:55So you say the backend
- 50:56business owner stuff is, is tedious,
- 50:58but when you got into this game, right,
- 51:02you were an affiliate owner, right?
- 51:04doing your thing.
- 51:04You guys had a lot of
- 51:05successful teams back then
- 51:07you hook up with Carrie Pierce.
- 51:09That is a match made in heaven.
- 51:12You evolve into owning this
- 51:13underdogs business.
- 51:16Could you have ever imagined where,
- 51:19when you started this whole
- 51:21journey in CrossFit,
- 51:23that this is where you'd end up?
- 51:27That's an interesting question.
- 51:29Um,
- 51:30I'm not sure that I expect, you know,
- 51:35it's hard to say, like,
- 51:35I don't know that I expected to evolve,
- 51:39you know, into being, I guess,
- 51:44one of the more visible
- 51:45coaches in the space.
- 51:48But my goal, when I, when I started,
- 51:53when I opened an affiliate,
- 51:54I started coaching elite
- 51:55athletes and we're talking 15 years ago.
- 51:58My goal was to help change
- 52:01people's lives through fitness first.
- 52:04But then my goal just from
- 52:06being in sports forever and
- 52:08being a competitive collegiate athlete,
- 52:10et cetera,
- 52:11I wanted to coach elite athletes.
- 52:14I felt like I had something to give.
- 52:15And as that started to evolve,
- 52:21I felt like I could affect
- 52:24people positively.
- 52:24I felt like I could help them.
- 52:28So I'm not sure, you know,
- 52:31that this necessarily was
- 52:34the iteration that I expected it to take.
- 52:37But, you know,
- 52:39did I feel like I could be successful,
- 52:41you know, doing it?
- 52:42Yes, I definitely did.
- 52:44And I don't know, you know,
- 52:48I don't think necessarily
- 52:49that that's arrogance.
- 52:50I just felt like, you know, this was...
- 52:54something that felt like a
- 52:55second calling for me after music,
- 52:57you know, where I felt like I had,
- 52:59I had a God given ability to be able to,
- 53:01to sing and affect people that way.
- 53:03And then, you know, I,
- 53:05I had a way to be able to
- 53:07get through to people and
- 53:08affect people in this way.
- 53:09So it's, it's ended up being, you know,
- 53:11obviously the, you know, my,
- 53:14my calling or second calling,
- 53:15I would say.
- 53:16So I have a music question for you.
- 53:18But before that,
- 53:20you were the first coach we
- 53:21ever had on this show.
- 53:23Wow.
- 53:23Many years ago.
- 53:24I did not know that.
- 53:25It's because Kat,
- 53:26my co-host on the roundtable,
- 53:29was a grid league.
- 53:30Yeah, sure.
- 53:32Can you imagine?
- 53:33That's 10 years ago now.
- 53:34And she knew you from that.
- 53:35And that's why we reached out to you.
- 53:37And then we learned that
- 53:39getting coaches on was a cool thing.
- 53:42Right?
- 53:42It was just a different perspective.
- 53:44Yeah.
- 53:44A lot of podcasts weren't doing that.
- 53:47Until we kind of started
- 53:48that ball rolling.
- 53:49And now it's like a staple, right?
- 53:51Coaches are on everything.
- 53:53Yeah, for sure.
- 53:54Even people that aren't
- 53:55coaches are coaching.
- 53:56More of an observation than a question,
- 53:59but it's really cool how it's evolved.
- 54:02My music question.
- 54:04Did you see the We Are The
- 54:06World documentary?
- 54:09I have not seen it yet.
- 54:10Is it a must see?
- 54:12Oh my gosh, Justin.
- 54:15justin all right well now
- 54:16it's on my list for the
- 54:18stevie part oh yeah stevie
- 54:21michael now I can't even
- 54:23ask you the follow-up so oh
- 54:25sorry alert yeah bob
- 54:28dylan's on the recording
- 54:30yeah he's afraid to sing in
- 54:32front of everybody all
- 54:32these stars right guy's
- 54:35been around for 40 years
- 54:37point right and he's afraid
- 54:39to sing in front of
- 54:39everybody and he doesn't
- 54:40know how they want him to sing
- 54:42So Stevie sits down at the piano.
- 54:45Yeah.
- 54:46And he's like, Bob,
- 54:47we just want you to like,
- 54:49we are the world.
- 54:50That's what it was.
- 54:52So Stevie had to sing it for him.
- 54:55Like Bob Dylan.
- 54:56That's amazing.
- 54:57Oh, I got to watch it.
- 54:58That's cool.
- 54:59Yeah.
- 55:00Very cool.
- 55:00No, I I'll,
- 55:01I'll put it on my list for sure.
- 55:03Yeah,
- 55:03it's like an hour and a half or
- 55:04something.
- 55:05Okay.
- 55:06But it's really good.
- 55:08The kids go to bed.
- 55:09If you're a music fan of the 70s and 80s,
- 55:13it was everywhere.
- 55:14Yeah.
- 55:15Everyone.
- 55:17Yon Clark says Bob Dylan was
- 55:19overrated in the chat.
- 55:21Wow.
- 55:22Not my favorite singer in the world,
- 55:24but maybe as a singer,
- 55:25we'd go back and look at
- 55:26some of those songs.
- 55:27Oh, my gosh.
- 55:28Yeah.
- 55:30His catalog's pretty impressive.
- 55:32Yeah.
- 55:32I don't know if...
- 55:34Like him and the Beatles
- 55:35probably together.
- 55:36Catalogs.
- 55:37Oh, my gosh.
- 55:39Yeah.
- 55:39I mean, ridiculous.
- 55:41Prince, obviously.
- 55:42Stevie.
- 55:44So there was a question here
- 55:46from Wadzombie.
- 55:47Okay.
- 55:48Not Wadzombie.
- 55:49Bruce Wayne.
- 55:50Bruce.
- 55:51Okay.
- 55:51Who would be the one athlete
- 55:53you'd love to coach?
- 55:54I know you answered this a
- 55:55couple years ago.
- 55:56Yeah.
- 55:56Ricky.
- 55:57Yeah.
- 55:57That came true.
- 55:58Okay.
- 56:00Or are you looking to kind
- 56:02of phase out of doing multiple athletes?
- 56:05Nope.
- 56:08It would have to be very
- 56:09special right now.
- 56:10Like it'd have to be
- 56:11somebody super special.
- 56:15Yeah, man.
- 56:16Shit.
- 56:16I don't know.
- 56:17That's a really hard question.
- 56:19And I, I always, it's always,
- 56:21I don't feel right.
- 56:24Most of the time.
- 56:28seeing an athlete who already has a coach.
- 56:31I just feel like it's disrespectful.
- 56:32It's like a poaching thing
- 56:33that you don't want to go down.
- 56:34No, and I feel like when I said Ricky,
- 56:38he didn't have a coach,
- 56:39and that was the truth at that time.
- 56:42I will say this,
- 56:45that one of the highlights
- 56:48of my career has been being
- 56:53able to coach Sarah, Signum's daughter.
- 56:55you know, who I still coach.
- 56:58And I say that just because, you know,
- 57:03I always knew Sarah and we were cordial,
- 57:09you know,
- 57:09and she was friendly with Carrie.
- 57:12And so I got to know her through that.
- 57:14And, but I didn't,
- 57:16you know,
- 57:17I didn't get to really understand
- 57:22what type of human being she was.
- 57:24I just knew, you know, listen, like she's,
- 57:26there's very few like icons of the sport,
- 57:28like people who are just, you know,
- 57:30they're like,
- 57:31you talk about the icons of
- 57:32music who walk down the street and,
- 57:35and people are crying, you know,
- 57:37and then getting them to
- 57:38sign their photos and things like that.
- 57:39I mean, I, I,
- 57:42there are a few of those in CrossFit.
- 57:45Sarah is one of them.
- 57:46What I saw at, you know,
- 57:48at the European semifinal
- 57:49last year with people lined
- 57:52up around the block to meet
- 57:54her and people like crying
- 57:56when they meet her and
- 57:56wanting them to sign their,
- 57:58their faces and things like,
- 57:59you know what I mean?
- 58:00I'd never seen that before.
- 58:02I mean, Carrie was popular, you know,
- 58:04like other people I coach are popular,
- 58:05but there's a whole nother
- 58:06level of popular, but, but,
- 58:10getting to know her and the
- 58:12fact that she is exactly
- 58:15the way she is on screen to
- 58:18her fans and behind the
- 58:19scenes was just one of the
- 58:21coolest things that I've
- 58:22ever experienced.
- 58:23And, you know,
- 58:24obviously she's dealt with a
- 58:25lot of health issues over
- 58:26the last few years and we're,
- 58:27we're trying to get her, you know,
- 58:30to a place where, you know, she's,
- 58:31she's backed and confident
- 58:33and competitive and, and those things.
- 58:35But regardless of what happens with that,
- 58:38um,
- 58:39I think just getting to know
- 58:41her and getting to
- 58:44experience just the light
- 58:46that shines from her as a human being,
- 58:50it's amazing because she is
- 58:52a special human.
- 58:53And so I know that did not
- 58:55answer Bruce's question at all,
- 58:58but it kind of tied into saying like,
- 59:02just feel lucky to you know
- 59:03have been able to know her
- 59:05and and to have been able
- 59:06to to work with her these
- 59:07these last it's it's been
- 59:09about a year now you know
- 59:11so it's uh I've been very
- 59:13lucky I feel like one of
- 59:14the coolest nicest most
- 59:16genuine people I've ever
- 59:17met in my life it's crazy
- 59:18honestly uh wad zombie says
- 59:21I'd want to coach susan
- 59:22clark that's only if you're ring chasing
- 59:26I mean, what, five times, six times,
- 59:28seven times champ in the men's division?
- 59:30Yeah, pretty special.
- 59:33There's two more good questions,
- 59:35and then we'll let you go for the day.
- 59:36Oh, I'm good.
- 59:37I don't have to pick up Ivy
- 59:38for another half hour.
- 59:39Donald Nortega,
- 59:42if you could build an athlete,
- 59:44what would you put more emphasis on,
- 59:46mental or physical strengths?
- 59:47That's an awesome question.
- 59:53Man, that's – here's the thing.
- 59:58I it's as kind of like
- 1:00:00sellout of an answer.
- 1:00:01This is,
- 1:00:02they have to go hand in hand does
- 1:00:04cause cause if you don't
- 1:00:05have the physical attributes,
- 1:00:08you could be mentally tough,
- 1:00:10but here's the deal.
- 1:00:10If you, if you can't do a handstand pushup,
- 1:00:14I don't care how mentally tough you are.
- 1:00:16If they come up in a workout,
- 1:00:17you can't do them.
- 1:00:18If you can't run a six minute mile,
- 1:00:20I don't care how mentally
- 1:00:21tough you are and what
- 1:00:22you've experienced in your life.
- 1:00:24Like you're not going to be able to do it.
- 1:00:26So, so ultimately they,
- 1:00:29they both lift each,
- 1:00:30they lift themselves up.
- 1:00:31You know what I mean?
- 1:00:32They're there,
- 1:00:33but I can tell you this
- 1:00:34right now that when you get
- 1:00:39to the level that,
- 1:00:41that these athletes are at, you know,
- 1:00:43and when I say these athletes,
- 1:00:44I'm talking about like high
- 1:00:47level semifinals and games athletes,
- 1:00:49right?
- 1:00:50You get to that level.
- 1:00:53The difference physically is
- 1:00:58generally pretty minuscule.
- 1:01:03There are the one percenters
- 1:01:04in specific movements, yes.
- 1:01:08But the athletes who are
- 1:01:14mentally and emotionally
- 1:01:15the toughest have a massive advantage.
- 1:01:19I mean,
- 1:01:20I felt like I coached an athlete
- 1:01:23who physically was not one
- 1:01:28of the top five or 10
- 1:01:29athletes in the world,
- 1:01:30but mentally she might've
- 1:01:31been the toughest athlete in the
- 1:01:34And she got the most out of
- 1:01:36everything because of her
- 1:01:40ability to handle the ups
- 1:01:42and downs in competition,
- 1:01:44to deal with emotional
- 1:01:45stress and to like the Ted Lasso quote,
- 1:01:50you know,
- 1:01:52where you've got a what's the
- 1:01:55animal again that has the
- 1:01:5610 second memory?
- 1:01:58he talks about no I can't of
- 1:01:59course I can't remember
- 1:02:01it's yeah goldfish gotta be
- 1:02:04a goldfish be a goldfish
- 1:02:05yes yeah um and that and
- 1:02:07that no one has ever done
- 1:02:09that better than she has um
- 1:02:12you know so and so the
- 1:02:14physical attributes are
- 1:02:15amazing but over the 15
- 1:02:16years that I've been in
- 1:02:17this sport I've seen people
- 1:02:19who you look at and you're
- 1:02:19like holy you know they're
- 1:02:22They're so physically gifted
- 1:02:24that you're just like, oh,
- 1:02:24they're going to win.
- 1:02:25They're going to do this.
- 1:02:26They're going to do that.
- 1:02:27And then they never do.
- 1:02:29And ultimately,
- 1:02:29and it's not because of injury.
- 1:02:30It's not.
- 1:02:31It's because they can't
- 1:02:32handle the emotional stress.
- 1:02:34They can't handle the daily
- 1:02:36ins and outs of that.
- 1:02:38You know, they get they get so emotional.
- 1:02:41obsessed about the highs and
- 1:02:44lows of workouts during
- 1:02:45training and all that kind of stuff,
- 1:02:47which is, if you do that, you're done.
- 1:02:49You're done before you start.
- 1:02:51Because every day is going
- 1:02:52to be different depending
- 1:02:53on how you feel and what's
- 1:02:54going on in your life and
- 1:02:55how much sleep you get and
- 1:02:56all this and all that.
- 1:02:57You have to be able to maintain
- 1:03:00this level of, of, you know,
- 1:03:02I hate to say it, but it's, it's,
- 1:03:03it's gotta,
- 1:03:04it's gotta almost just be boring in a way,
- 1:03:07you know, where you're, you're not,
- 1:03:09you're not dealing with
- 1:03:10that or you're not reacting to it.
- 1:03:13And so I would say that, that,
- 1:03:16Both of them are incredibly important,
- 1:03:19but then I think once you
- 1:03:20get to a certain level,
- 1:03:21the mental and emotional
- 1:03:23aspects are massive.
- 1:03:28It's hard to teach, very hard to teach.
- 1:03:31It's funny because when I
- 1:03:31look at your athletes,
- 1:03:33the common phrase now is,
- 1:03:35they got that dog in them.
- 1:03:37Yeah.
- 1:03:37Which goes right along with underdogs,
- 1:03:40your old dog mentality.
- 1:03:42Carrie had that dog in her.
- 1:03:44She has that dog in them.
- 1:03:45Yes.
- 1:03:47Last year at semis,
- 1:03:48I finally saw the dog in Alex.
- 1:03:50And I still think Alex is working on it.
- 1:03:52I still think Alex, you know,
- 1:03:56I would not yet.
- 1:03:58What's that?
- 1:03:59That burpee workout against
- 1:04:00100% without question.
- 1:04:01I think,
- 1:04:02I think she has the dog in her
- 1:04:04when it's something she's confident with.
- 1:04:06But you talk to the athletes that are,
- 1:04:10you know,
- 1:04:11the Laura's and the Tia's and the,
- 1:04:14you know, the mats and the, you know,
- 1:04:15even the pats and the,
- 1:04:17and the Brent's and those
- 1:04:18guys who are there every year, like you,
- 1:04:22they just, it doesn't matter.
- 1:04:24They just know like, okay, by the end,
- 1:04:26I'm going to be where I need to be,
- 1:04:27you know?
- 1:04:27And like, they don't let them,
- 1:04:28they don't get, you know,
- 1:04:29get worked out or worked up
- 1:04:31over a specific movement or
- 1:04:33a workout that's that, you know,
- 1:04:35that maybe doesn't go their way.
- 1:04:38And I also think, you know, with Alex,
- 1:04:42we're still working on like,
- 1:04:44it's hard sometimes to, you know,
- 1:04:49acknowledge and accept who
- 1:04:51you are as an athlete
- 1:04:53compared to who you were as an athlete.
- 1:04:56And when I say that,
- 1:04:57I just mean there's a lot
- 1:04:59of workouts that Alex still
- 1:05:01sees herself as the athlete
- 1:05:02two and three years ago and
- 1:05:04not the athletes that's now
- 1:05:06ranked top five in the world.
- 1:05:07She hasn't fully accepted it
- 1:05:10or embraced it.
- 1:05:13And when you do that as an athlete,
- 1:05:14you become fucking scary.
- 1:05:16Like, you know, because...
- 1:05:18You know,
- 1:05:19you have the confidence to be
- 1:05:21able to go after it and you
- 1:05:23have the expectation that, you know what,
- 1:05:26I'm going to crush this.
- 1:05:28Like I'm going to do well on this.
- 1:05:29And, you know,
- 1:05:30that's not an easy thing to develop.
- 1:05:33It's a very challenging thing to develop.
- 1:05:35Uh, and, um,
- 1:05:36we haven't seen a ton of athletes,
- 1:05:38you know, over the years able to do that.
- 1:05:40Um, you know, and it's exciting to, to, to,
- 1:05:44to be able to think that, you know,
- 1:05:46you have an athlete or,
- 1:05:48or see that in somebody that,
- 1:05:49that that's possible.
- 1:05:50Um, you know, that's very exciting.
- 1:05:52So last question from the
- 1:05:54chat from Kenneth's lab,
- 1:05:57could Carrie Pierce make a
- 1:05:58comeback if she wanted to?
- 1:06:01one she's told me
- 1:06:02definitively she does not
- 1:06:04want to no she doesn't want
- 1:06:05to um I mean listen I had
- 1:06:12never put it past carrie
- 1:06:14you know um I think
- 1:06:18You know,
- 1:06:18I think her focus now is
- 1:06:20obviously on having a family.
- 1:06:24You know,
- 1:06:24is it something I could see
- 1:06:25eventually where she makes a comeback?
- 1:06:26And if she was going to make a comeback,
- 1:06:28I think it would be, you know,
- 1:06:29in the Masters and age group division.
- 1:06:33But, you know,
- 1:06:34the sport continues to evolve.
- 1:06:37And when I say that,
- 1:06:40I mean, you see the numbers,
- 1:06:43the strength numbers, you know,
- 1:06:44that are that are being put
- 1:06:46up now by the women.
- 1:06:50And it's I mean, it's it's freakish.
- 1:06:52I mean, it's downright scary, you know.
- 1:06:56And I think that there,
- 1:06:59I think Carrie obviously is
- 1:07:01mentally tough enough to,
- 1:07:03she probably could come
- 1:07:05back and even make the games, you know,
- 1:07:08if she devoted a year to it,
- 1:07:09she probably still could in
- 1:07:10the open division.
- 1:07:13But I look at some of the
- 1:07:15workouts and some of the
- 1:07:17movements when you talk
- 1:07:18about sandbags and yokes
- 1:07:21and heavy cleans and heavy
- 1:07:23squats and some of those things, machines,
- 1:07:26like some of the numbers,
- 1:07:29the power output numbers that you see.
- 1:07:31It's just getting like,
- 1:07:33you got to be built different.
- 1:07:35You know what I mean?
- 1:07:37It's just getting freakishly freakish.
- 1:07:40I know that's like...
- 1:07:42I don't know.
- 1:07:43I don't know.
- 1:07:43I mean, it's wild.
- 1:07:44So I think she's very happy.
- 1:07:47What's that?
- 1:07:48There's one thing for sure.
- 1:07:49There are home runs that she
- 1:07:51would still win.
- 1:07:52Oh, a hundred percent.
- 1:07:52Yeah.
- 1:07:53Yeah.
- 1:07:54without question, you know,
- 1:07:55I don't think there's any question,
- 1:07:57but I do think as far as
- 1:07:58the strength numbers every year, they,
- 1:08:03they get harder and harder
- 1:08:04to attain for the athletes
- 1:08:06that were used to the
- 1:08:07numbers in a specific era in a specific,
- 1:08:10you know,
- 1:08:11like you see those numbers and
- 1:08:13then all of a sudden a year or two later,
- 1:08:15it's like, what the hell?
- 1:08:17Like,
- 1:08:17Whereas, you know,
- 1:08:18the numbers have just gotten bananas now,
- 1:08:21you know, um, it's, it's, I,
- 1:08:23I'm glad you said this and this,
- 1:08:24I promise will be my last question.
- 1:08:26Um, so with that, like, you know, my,
- 1:08:29my coach and owner is Christie O'Connell,
- 1:08:32um, Kristen Holta,
- 1:08:34like era of that smaller athlete.
- 1:08:39seems to be going away like
- 1:08:41in just kind of what you're
- 1:08:42saying but then you have
- 1:08:43someone on the men's side
- 1:08:44like a colton mertens yeah
- 1:08:46defying the odds well
- 1:08:48colton's a unicorn colton's
- 1:08:50also unbelievably strong
- 1:08:52like ridiculously strong
- 1:08:54like so compact in the way
- 1:08:55he's built um but I also
- 1:08:59think there's not on the
- 1:08:59women's side uh well mal
- 1:09:02was not mal was built very
- 1:09:04similarly to carrie
- 1:09:06And I felt like we were
- 1:09:07seeing it with Mal.
- 1:09:07Now, you know,
- 1:09:08obviously what's happened there.
- 1:09:10But, you know, I mean,
- 1:09:11as far as physical
- 1:09:12attributes are concerned,
- 1:09:13I felt like she's probably the only one,
- 1:09:17you know,
- 1:09:17that's built like that right now.
- 1:09:19When you look at the top, even the top 10,
- 1:09:22I mean,
- 1:09:22is there anyone in the top 10
- 1:09:24who's shorter than 5'2"?
- 1:09:25I don't think so.
- 1:09:28Ariel's pretty short.
- 1:09:29Yeah.
- 1:09:30She's about that.
- 1:09:31Yeah.
- 1:09:31She's about that five, two, five, three.
- 1:09:33Yeah.
- 1:09:33So Ariel is still, still hanging in with,
- 1:09:36with that.
- 1:09:37But I mean,
- 1:09:38you're seeing more and more now that,
- 1:09:41that it is, you know, it's like that five,
- 1:09:45five to five,
- 1:09:46eight ish built like a brick shit house,
- 1:09:49like able to handle strong man.
- 1:09:52They're two different body types.
- 1:09:55Say that.
- 1:09:56Christy.
- 1:09:57Yeah.
- 1:09:58A hundred percent.
- 1:09:59Yes.
- 1:10:00Yeah.
- 1:10:01Ariel Stauder for sure.
- 1:10:04You know, and,
- 1:10:05and especially like lower body legs trunk,
- 1:10:08you know?
- 1:10:11Yeah.
- 1:10:12I think it's going to get
- 1:10:12harder and harder.
- 1:10:13I do.
- 1:10:14I just think that's the
- 1:10:15evolution of the sport.
- 1:10:17It's going to get harder and
- 1:10:18harder for athletes of that size,
- 1:10:21especially on the women's side.
- 1:10:23Yeah.
- 1:10:23I mean, you can get away with it in a way,
- 1:10:25you know, I guess this, this,
- 1:10:28young girl from, from, uh, Switzerland,
- 1:10:31Mirjam.
- 1:10:32Uh, we'll see.
- 1:10:35I mean,
- 1:10:36some of the numbers she's putting
- 1:10:37up are astounding.
- 1:10:38You know, you look at it, I mean,
- 1:10:39her engine numbers are incredible.
- 1:10:40She's high rock.
- 1:10:41She runs a sub five, uh, 21, 5k, 20,
- 1:10:44sub 21 minute 5k.
- 1:10:45Uh,
- 1:10:47apparently she has some things on her
- 1:10:49Instagram or her YouTube
- 1:10:51where she did like
- 1:10:51350 wall balls unbroken and 60,
- 1:10:5660 squats at a hundred kilos unbroken,
- 1:11:00like some like ridiculous numbers,
- 1:11:02power endurance numbers.
- 1:11:04Um, but we'll see, you know, um, what,
- 1:11:09what,
- 1:11:09what's that going to look like at semis?
- 1:11:11I, you gotta show me I'm like Missouri.
- 1:11:14I'm the show me state, right?
- 1:11:15Like, yeah, show me.
- 1:11:17I gotta see it to, to believe it,
- 1:11:19you know?
- 1:11:20We've seen a lot of people
- 1:11:21in the past finish
- 1:11:22incredibly well in the Open
- 1:11:24and then go to semis and get crushed.
- 1:11:27I'm not saying that's going
- 1:11:28to happen to her.
- 1:11:29I just got to see it.
- 1:11:30If she goes and she does it
- 1:11:31and she qualifies for the games,
- 1:11:33then we're all going to be like, okay,
- 1:11:34she's the real deal.
- 1:11:36If she goes to semifinals
- 1:11:37and finishes 37th,
- 1:11:38then we'll know that too.
- 1:11:40Yep.
- 1:11:43Well, my friend, as always,
- 1:11:45this has been a blast.
- 1:11:46I could chat with you all night.

- 1:11:54I got it.
