- 0:08Hour number two, Miller and Condon, welcome back, Iowa

- 0:28go out and meet the crew, if you happen to be in the area headed
- 0:31to Jordan Creek for doing some shopping, the afternoon show, KX
- 0:36No Drive will be there from 2:00 until 5.
- 0:40Let's get Travis Hines in here. He covers Iowa State and he
- 0:44joins us. Hello, Travis, Hines, Trenton,
- 0:46Ken, how are you? I'm doing excellent.
- 0:49How are you guys? Doing well, I, you know where we
- 0:50start with you was the contract Jayden Higgins signed yesterday
- 0:54and I thought it must be a misprint because, you know,
- 0:56second round players don't get guaranteed contracts and Jaden
- 1:01Higgins has become the first to do so and good for him.
- 1:0511,700,000 and some change for Jaden Higgins, who Brent Bloom
- 1:09tweeted out at some point last night, came to Iowa State with 0
- 1:14NIL promises. How about that?
- 1:16And then to see him get rewarded and a hell of a player.
- 1:19I'm guessing he's one of the guys you enjoyed covering.
- 1:23Yeah, without a doubt. I mean, I think it was he had
- 1:26modest expectations when he arrived at Iowa State two years
- 1:29ago. I think, you know, people were
- 1:31hopeful that he could be an impact receiver.
- 1:33But what he ultimately was over the course of two years at Iowa
- 1:37State, I don't know that very many people would have predicted
- 1:40that. I mean, he was right up there,
- 1:42in my opinion, with the best receivers that I've covered at
- 1:46Iowa State in the last 10 years. Now obviously only had two years
- 1:49to make that sort of impact, but I do think he was just as good.
- 1:53Anybody else that has come through that program at that
- 1:55position in the last 10 years? And certainly I was surprised to
- 1:59see him get a fully guaranteed contract.
- 2:01But I guess when you look at his collegiate track record,
- 2:05obviously the Texans both highly of him and Iowa State's
- 2:09development of wide receivers. Given that they took Jalen Knoll
- 2:12round or two later and already have Xavier Hutchinson on the
- 2:15roster, I guess it makes sense. Like they got to feel pretty
- 2:17confident that they're getting, you know, maybe not a game
- 2:20changing wide receiver, but a guy that's going to make their
- 2:23roster and make contributions from day one and then hopefully
- 2:26for them over the course of a number of years.
- 2:29Who's next? And don't say Rocco Beck,
- 2:31because I think that'd be maybe the easiest answer.
- 2:34Who would be the next guy that you'd put in there?
- 2:35You look at this roster that you think can be not even a first
- 2:38round pick, but that day 2 type of guy.
- 2:41Is there anybody that jumps off the board to you?
- 2:44You know, it's a good question. Like as I think about it now, at
- 2:47the top of my head, I don't know that there's anybody with that
- 2:51eye of feeling. But I think do you look at it
- 2:54like if you would have asked me that last year, I don't know
- 2:56that I would have said Darien Porter and his measurables were
- 3:00that was probably a fail on my part because he was had all the
- 3:04tools to be, you know, ultimately what he became.
- 3:07So I don't know that I have a great name off the top of my.
- 3:09Head Dom orange maybe? Guys, that's a good one.
- 3:12Dom Orange would be a guy, but like that's that's a pretty
- 3:15competitive position at the NFL draft level.
- 3:18You have to be not only a physical freak, but a, you know,
- 3:22the most among the most refined at that position in the country.
- 3:25So like that's a tough, tough spot to be drafted highly from.
- 3:29But I do think like he's a guy that maybe who would be talking
- 3:32about in a couple months, Like the guy that I think over the
- 3:34long term will be interesting just because we've seen guys
- 3:38take this path as I'm talking about Darien Porter is like a
- 3:40Benny Nagoya, like a guy with his size and speed and now play
- 3:44blueprint for Darien from Darien Porter of how to get to like, is
- 3:48that a guy that we're talking about in a couple of years to
- 3:50this point really hasn't seen the field, you know, other than
- 3:53to really block offensively. The other name that I was
- 3:56thinking of is John Tez Williams, the essential we saw
- 3:58out of him at the other quarterback spot opposite
- 4:01Porter. I just don't know is he, is he
- 4:03big enough even to be a day two kind of selection?
- 4:05I guess that'd probably be the question with Williams, wouldn't
- 4:08it, Travis? Yeah, like that's when I was
- 4:10thinking of through names, Like I'm, I'm biased.
- 4:12Anybody that I look down to while I speak to them, like I
- 4:15worry about their size. You know, I, I say that like
- 4:18literally, not figuratively. I'm not talking down to anybody.
- 4:21Right, right, just. Worrying about it that size,
- 4:23like unless you are an elite, you know, shut down corner with
- 4:26elite speed, like that's again, it's just really hard at that
- 4:29level. But certainly like Jack says, is
- 4:31the guy that's going to be, you know, one of their premier
- 4:34defensive players next year. Again, it's just it's so hard to
- 4:37go from even being among the best in the Big 12 to being a
- 4:41high pick in the NFL draft. It's just so competitive.
- 4:44I want to go not between the lines, but kind of outside when
- 4:49when it comes to this college sports Commission that's being
- 4:53put together and Nick Saban is going to be a part of it.
- 4:56I know there's a big money booster from Texas Tech that's
- 5:00got his name. He's going to be a part of it.
- 5:03I'm not sure who else is going to comprise it.
- 5:06As Trent pointed out to me, the NCAA has been trying to get
- 5:09Congress to get involved with this.
- 5:11What's in the end? At the end of the day, does this
- 5:15Commission, will this Commission have any teeth?
- 5:17Because whatever they decide, I have to assume is going to end
- 5:20up in court and ending up in court's been really good for the
- 5:23players in most cases as of late.
- 5:26What, where, where are we headed with this?
- 5:28Any idea? I mean, I don't, I don't think
- 5:31very far, frankly. I mean, when you talk about a
- 5:33Commission like what, what authority is this Commission
- 5:36going to have? Is it going to ultimately end up
- 5:37as an executive order on the presidential deaths, which I
- 5:40think probably doesn't go to where the NCAA would need it to
- 5:45be from a legal standpoint in terms of being able to actually
- 5:49make changes that now become law?
- 5:51I think to do that, they're going to need Congress.
- 5:53And I think when you look at what Congress has been, I mean,
- 5:57it's easy to to make Congress jokes.
- 5:59So I can make your own here. Like, are they going to get
- 6:00anything through Congress? And the time it takes to get
- 6:05legislation that the NCAA would feel like is in their best
- 6:09interest. What is Congress going to look
- 6:11like? Because we're what now like like
- 6:1316 months out from the midterm elections?
- 6:15I guess the Congress going to look like it does today.
- 6:18I maybe, but maybe not. So I just, I, I am very
- 6:22skeptical. And I think ultimately, and this
- 6:24is where I come down, I like, I don't know what kind of reform
- 6:29there can be until we just make these guys employees.
- 6:32I just don't know what's going to stand any kind of legal
- 6:34scrutiny. Because the one thing that I
- 6:36feel pretty confident isn't going to change anytime soon is
- 6:40the Supreme Court. And the Supreme Court not too
- 6:42long ago went nine O against the NCAA and basically invited as
- 6:47much litigation as anybody could bring against them, you know,
- 6:51with those opinions. So I, I think that's just tough.
- 6:55And until you recognize a fundamental disc here, which
- 6:58again, is probably going to change the DNA of college
- 7:01sports, like if their employees or if these football programs
- 7:04get spun out as you know, associated with athletic or with
- 7:08universities, but not directly tied to them.
- 7:10Like you're looking at a fundamental change here, which,
- 7:13you know, when you talk about the way NIL and transfer portal
- 7:16has transformed the game, I don't know that fans
- 7:19particularly like. And if we're going to go further
- 7:21down this where you're further divorcing the players and
- 7:25programs from the actual university, I think that could
- 7:28be problematic. But excuse me on the other end,
- 7:32I just saw a report that ESP NS willing to pony up like another
- 7:3550 or 60 million for an extra SEC gain.
- 7:38So like obviously they're not too worried about at least at
- 7:40the top tier level of the sport, you know, devaluing any.
- 7:44So I just, I don't know what direction this is going to go in
- 7:49ultimately. I don't know that anybody does.
- 7:51But I don't know like anybody that wants there to be rules,
- 7:54regulations, guardrails, whatever buzzword we're using,
- 7:57like it's going to fundamentally change college sports.
- 8:01And the question is, is that for better or worse than it already
- 8:04has changed? Because I know nobody likes the
- 8:06way this is set up now. But like, we've had pretty good
- 8:08football. We've had pretty good basketball
- 8:10on both the men's and women's side.
- 8:12So while like maybe over the long term, this isn't going to
- 8:16go great, I don't know that anybody at least that is
- 8:19watching on TV or cashing these checks is complaining.
- 8:22Like the rubber will beat the road here with the revenue
- 8:24sharing though, and how athletic departments absorb that cost.
- 8:28Like that's probably what's going to change and really cause
- 8:31a realignment and how things go. But until then, I just don't
- 8:34know how much anybody can really change anything.
- 8:37And like what the the Overton window of possibility even
- 8:40really is when you look at the White House, Congress and the
- 8:44Supreme Court. And then you have the NCAA,
- 8:47which obviously feels one way, and then you have the players or
- 8:51their representatives on the other that are going to be
- 8:53pushing in the other direction. Really thoughtful conversation
- 8:55there. Good stuff, Travis, from you
- 8:58taking it now kind of from that big picture.
- 9:00Let's bring it back in. As you look towards the not so
- 9:03foreseeable future when everything is put together.
- 9:06Is this a good thing for a place like Iowa State?
- 9:09It is what we have coming down the Pike of is this going to be
- 9:12a good thing or is it going to make that hill to climb even
- 9:15more difficult for the Cyclone athletic department?
- 9:19I think in the short and medium term, in terms of the ability to
- 9:24compete at the highest level, it's probably a net benefit for
- 9:29Iowa State for a couple reasons, I think #1 on the football side,
- 9:33is the playoff access, right, like the Big 12, like Iowa
- 9:37State, Is it going to surprise you if you look up?
- 9:39And not that much changes in the next five years in terms of how
- 9:42college sports looks. And Iowa State is among the best
- 9:45and most consistent programs in the Big 12.
- 9:47Like that would have been wild to say 10 years ago, but now
- 9:50with what Iowa State has done, what the Big 12 looks like, it
- 9:52doesn't feel that crazy as a possibility.
- 9:55And I so I think that is a positive for Iowa State.
- 9:58You know, I do think when you get into the revenue sharing and
- 10:01then still having, in my opinion, likely to have to raise
- 10:04money on top of that through collective, like that'll be
- 10:07tough. But we've seen TJ Asselberger,
- 10:09we've seen Matt Campbell, we've seen Bill Fennelly field really
- 10:13competitive elite level teams in this environment.
- 10:18Now they're walking tightrope, like this stuff is really hard
- 10:20to do it the way they're doing it.
- 10:22So it's not guaranteed, but at least we've seen them do it.
- 10:25I think beyond that, my concern would be, and I don't think like
- 10:29I'm alone here, like what is the SEC in the Big 10 going to do?
- 10:31Like if they leave off and do their own thing or just continue
- 10:35to exert the leverage that they have, they're going to make it
- 10:37harder for the Iowa States of the world to compete or even be
- 10:41in the same league as these other leagues.
- 10:44Intern, like metaphorically speaking, I just don't know what
- 10:48that's going to look like because if the Big 10 and SEC
- 10:51decide we're going to professionalize this as much as
- 10:55we can. And I don't know that their fan
- 10:56bases particularly care or they might even be advocating for
- 11:00that, that like Iowa State, it's going to be tough for them to
- 11:03find a landing spot there. And they're not going to be
- 11:05alone there. There's going to be, you know,
- 11:07very valuable properties, proud athletic departments and fan
- 11:11bases that are, you know, on the outside looking in.
- 11:14And I do feel a little Pollyannish saying it like that
- 11:17because we've been talking about this for 15 years and it hasn't
- 11:20happened. But like the on the other end,
- 11:22like we've only moved closer to it, right?
- 11:24Like it's moving in that direction.
- 11:26Eventually, unless Congress steps in or there's a wholesale,
- 11:30you know, change of culture, which I'm not counting on, like
- 11:33these programs, these conferences are going to
- 11:35continue to chase the biggest dollars.
- 11:37And now it would seem the next logical phase is to box out
- 11:42other programs and other leagues from those dollars, which
- 11:45ultimately means from the competition.
- 11:47And that would be my concern. That'd be brutal.
- 11:50Travis Hines, Des Moines registers our guests.
- 11:52Let's get back. I want to ask you kind of the
- 11:54same thing with Higgins, but I want to do it in basketball.
- 11:58As far as guys that you've covered, Tyrese Halbert, we're
- 12:01seeing what he's doing. We're seeing where that he was
- 12:04named the Olympic team, so I get the gold medal, etcetera.
- 12:08He's having such an impactful playoffs.
- 12:10Was there a time at Iowa State that you thought he was going to
- 12:13be as good as he is and his as big of a name in the NBA as he
- 12:17seemingly becoming? No, I did not.
- 12:21I thought like I thought he had a chance or a feeling, maybe
- 12:27even a likelihood of being a multiple time All Star.
- 12:30And I felt like I was higher on him than most.
- 12:32But I thought being a multiple time All Star was going to be as
- 12:36good as it got for him. And it'd probably be coming, you
- 12:38know, year 789 in his late 20s when he's in the peak of his
- 12:42career to see where he is now. In absolutely no way could I
- 12:46have seen him being one of the 10 or 15 best players in the
- 12:49league. And I think he's absolutely in
- 12:51that discussion right now. And it's just incredible.
- 12:55Like I've said this before, I've written it before, but it is
- 12:58amazing to me, a guy who like, again, probably should have gone
- 13:02to Northern Iowa. When you look at the program he
- 13:05was joining and like the past the playing time for him when he
- 13:09started, it seemed like this is a dude who's probably
- 13:11transferring in 10 months. To go from that to this is
- 13:16incredible. And it's been, you know, really
- 13:19fun to watch as somebody who had a front row seat for those first
- 13:21two years to see Tyrese. And like, everything people say
- 13:25about Tyrese in terms of his personality, his charisma, his
- 13:28magnetism is true. Like, he's just a guy that
- 13:31people like being around. And like, I'm sure he's like,
- 13:34not quite as humble as he was before a $250 million contract,
- 13:39but he is a guy that's still like when he was back in March,
- 13:42everybody only had great things to say about him, about how
- 13:45engaged he was and personable. You know, I saw Steve Brome
- 13:50today wrote in The Athletic that two days after he got fired at
- 13:53Murray State, you know, who was calling him but Tyrene Albert.
- 13:56So again, like, it's been cool to watch his evolution and to
- 14:00see him, you know, by all. I'm not going to pretend like I,
- 14:03me and Tyrese are best buddies, but everybody who's around him
- 14:07and spends time with him has continued to say that he was the
- 14:10same Tyrese that showed up at Ames, you know, 18 years old,
- 14:13with a smile on his face and not much of a reputation.
- 14:16Travis, we know you're a big hoop, said We're talking earlier
- 14:19with Tom Caker about a prospect from Iowa United Prep here in
- 14:23Des Moines. Have you heard anything about
- 14:25that prep school they're in through finishing up your number
- 14:27one over there, how things have went?
- 14:30It feels like they got some big time prospects.
- 14:32I saw Kelvin Sampson, he was at the school a couple of weeks
- 14:35ago. Have you heard anything kind of
- 14:37in the in the basketball circles about that prep program a year
- 14:39in? Yeah, about a year ago, maybe a
- 14:43little longer, I started hearing about them and everything.
- 14:45It sounds like they're spending a lot of money and bringing in a
- 14:49lot of high level prospects. And I think believe Dean Oliver
- 14:52is the coach, if I'm not mistaken.
- 14:53They're they're they're top team.
- 14:56So yeah, I mean, I think they're they're talking about spending a
- 14:59ton of money and developing, you know, high level prospects.
- 15:03I don't know much beyond that, but it is certainly something
- 15:06that I've tried to keep an eye on, at least from a distance to
- 15:08see how it unfolds. Because again, I don't know much
- 15:11about it. But I think everybody nationally
- 15:13who follows prep schools, when any of these pop up, you always
- 15:16have kind of a skeptical eye because there are horror
- 15:18stories, which you get not to say that this is 1, but it's
- 15:21always something you wonder about.
- 15:22But certainly, you know, I think we've seen guys get scholarship
- 15:25offers out of there. And you mentioned the the
- 15:28coaches that are coming through that, you know, they've gotten
- 15:30some high level dudes through there.
- 15:31And that's always an interesting thing to watch, especially, you
- 15:35know, in probably one of the more random places to try to
- 15:38build a prep school in Des Moines, IA.
- 15:39Fairpoint, Good stuff, Travis. desmoinesregisterdesmoinesregister.com
- 15:44Travis, thanks for doing this. We'll run you down in a couple

- 16:50I'm Millery Condon coming up on 1:30 on a Friday.
- 16:54The drive, Sean and Lucas today they will be at Jordan Creek
- 16:58Mall, Shields Jordan Creek Mall doing their show from 2:00 until
- 17:025:00. Let's head to Las Vegas.
- 17:04Mike Palm is the VP of operations at Circus Sports and
- 17:07he joins us to talk about a number of topics right now.
- 17:12Hello, Mike. Trenton, Kent, how are you?
- 17:15Behold unto you is born this day in the city of Chicago a new
- 17:19Pope, and he shall be called Leo the 14th.
- 17:23Indeed, he will be and he's a White Sox fan.
- 17:26We got that news after the ABC broke the story that he's a Cubs
- 17:29fan. Couldn't even get that right.
- 17:32And by the way, I loved your I loved your line about the
- 17:35tickets. I don't know exactly what it
- 17:37was, but if they if they go 4 four votes and they don't
- 17:40declare Pope, they get it, get the ball at the 25 yard line,
- 17:44which was pretty good. Anyways, a lot of ground to
- 17:47cover with you Mike, and enjoy our conversations with you.
- 17:50I want to start hockey wise, and I think it's I'm going to be a
- 17:53blow to Veeson. I think you're going to.
- 17:56I think Veeson's going to lose Stormy Bone and Tony, if I'm
- 17:59pronouncing her name right. She is so good, such a breath of
- 18:02fresh air. When it comes to Leah Heckstall
- 18:05and Emily Kaplan, they're fine, but Stormy is just better,
- 18:10period. And I believe that it doesn't
- 18:12take, won't take ESPN very long to figure that out.
- 18:15Do you think I'm on to something?
- 18:18Well, I've been saying that for years, but unfortunately in the
- 18:20post game with SVP last night, I thought she asked dry sight of a
- 18:23bad question when she said you guys were locked in and he said
- 18:27no, we weren't. The top line was not locked in.
- 18:30It was the IT was the 3rd and 4th line that really got us
- 18:32through this game. But you know, I when I was on
- 18:36her show this morning, I kind of ripped her about it and she
- 18:38said, Mike, when they killed the major penalty, I was throwing my
- 18:41mind prepared to talk to a knight because I thought they
- 18:44were going to win the game that I was shocked at Edmonton one
- 18:46after they killed off the five minute.
- 18:49No, she's terrific and you can see the respect that the coaches
- 18:52have for well, let's go to that series.
- 18:55I I, I thought Edmonton was dead in the water.
- 18:57I really did end of March into April.
- 18:59I thought, you know what, what a waste of money because I bet
- 19:02this team as soon as the odds came out last year, I thought
- 19:04get them now. The numbers just going to go
- 19:07down and again, I thought they were completely cooked.
- 19:12What's been the turn around amongst the Oilers, do you
- 19:15think? Well, I don't know.
- 19:17You know what we say, sometimes a goaltending change can just
- 19:22spark A-Team. Not that it's the first goalie's
- 19:24fault. I will tell you last night that
- 19:27if Pickard wouldn't have played as well as he did, they would
- 19:30have got buried in that second period.
- 19:31He kept them in the game and then all the sudden Hill gives
- 19:34up by a couple of two goals on three shots and it really turned
- 19:37the game around. You know, when we go back, if
- 19:41the Edmonton Oilers win the Stanley Cup this year, I'm going
- 19:43to go back to game three against the Kings and that awful
- 19:46challenge that turned that whole series.
- 19:50You're up to nothing. You're 4/4 with six minutes to
- 19:52go in Game 3 and you make a horrible challenge with the
- 19:56consequence almost always going to be a goal on their power
- 19:59play. And but they're playing really
- 20:01well. Like I tell you right now, I
- 20:03think Dallas will eliminate your Jets.
- 20:06Dallas will need hasten in back, I think if they're going to have
- 20:09a shot to beat Edmonton. They look really good right now.
- 20:12I'm not sure if the Knights can scratch out even one game in
- 20:15this series. Can I let me follow up Trent on
- 20:18that just for a second when it comes to Winnipeg and and you're
- 20:21probably going to be right, but that you know my squad and you
- 20:23know where my heart is. So I there's 16 to one around
- 20:27that price to win the Stanley Cup.
- 20:28So I'm thinking to myself, and I'm going by something that that
- 20:31you've been floating out there that this is not the year to be
- 20:34a goalie to win the con. Smythe and I'm wholeheartedly on
- 20:38that train with you that it's not going to be.
- 20:41So I start shopping around. If The Jets win, it's going to
- 20:44be one of two guys. It's good.
- 20:45It's not going to be Hella Buck. It's going to be Kyle Connor or
- 20:49in all likelihood it's going to be Mark Shifley who is their
- 20:52best player. So I can bet The Jets are 16 to
- 20:55one or I can bet the con. Smythe and I start going to my 3
- 20:58apps, open the mall, 50 to one at DraftKings, 150 at Bet
- 21:02Rivers. I come to Circa.
- 21:03He's 325 to 1 to when they con smite.
- 21:08I mean, what a difference in price in my favor.
- 21:10Now all The Jets need to do is hoist the Cup, which is kind of
- 21:14a big ask, but is that a decent strategy on my part if I truly
- 21:19believe that they're not out of it at this point?
- 21:23Sure, and you can add them if they win in this round.
- 21:25You can add someone on Winnipeg as well, just in case that
- 21:28happens. But 325 to 1, I mean, my God,
- 21:31that's when he's the most likely player on the team.
- 21:35That's great. I will say this, Ken, I say
- 21:38there's no goalie likely to win it.
- 21:39Logan Thompson, if if the Caps keep going, I think he deserves
- 21:45strong consideration. I just think you can draw a line
- 21:47through all these goalies. It isn't going to be Freddie
- 21:50Anderson. I don't think he's done anything
- 21:52outstanding, you know, But Brofsky has not been terrific,
- 21:59really. He's been very average and
- 22:01probably cost him one of the two games in Toronto.
- 22:06Yeah, I don't know. I I don't know.
- 22:09A Toronto goalie won't win it because they're going to have
- 22:12too many split games. Wolves going to get the next two
- 22:15for sure in South Florida. I don't think Helabock can win
- 22:21it and I don't think Ottinger can win.
- 22:22He could if he got really hot. But you got Rattan on that team.
- 22:25Single handedly got them to where they are.
- 22:28Picard. Picard just doesn't have the
- 22:30name and all the star power on that offense and he'll hasn't
- 22:33been great. So I think, I think Logan
- 22:36Thompson's really right now the only goalie that has any shot
- 22:38and the and the Caps would have to pull about 3 upsets in the
- 22:41next 3 rounds for that to happen.
- 22:43I'll jump into the other winter sport, the NBA continues.
- 22:46Ken and I were talking at the top of the show.
- 22:49Those game one and games two in the Eastern Conference, those
- 22:51had to be good for you guys. Not just obviously the cover for
- 22:55the underdog, but the money line.
- 22:56Those game two games. Was that a big one for you guys
- 22:59as operators and what we saw not just the game one upset, but
- 23:03then Game 2 to bounce back and get both of those?
- 23:06No, the biggest thing was Boston losing game two.
- 23:08Yeah, because that's impossible. Cleveland, the injuries, people
- 23:11weren't, you know, bridge jumpers, as we would say Kenny
- 23:14and the horse racing industry, but they were jumping on that
- 23:17bridge on the Celtics. You blow a 20 point lead in game
- 23:20one, there's no way they're losing Game 2.
- 23:21And here came everybody. They've got the game straight up
- 23:24on the money line. Forget about money line parlays.
- 23:26They pounded that game and laid the price on the money line.
- 23:29That was one of the best results we ever had as a book.
- 23:31Maybe maybe our best non football result that was there
- 23:36were millions wagered on the money line on on the Celtics in
- 23:40Game 2. I think you told us last year
- 23:42it's about two to one NBA over NHL when it comes to Ticket,
- 23:47right? Is it still that number?
- 23:48Way more people still bet the NBA as opposed to the NHL.
- 23:52If you look at our monthly handle right now, baseball's at
- 23:55about 35% and then it's NBA 24%, NHL 12 to 13.
- 24:01So it's right there, same as the regular season 2 to one.
- 24:05Makes sense. Speaking of that, I'm looking at
- 24:09your series prices right now at Circa Knicks plus one O 8
- 24:13Celtics -128 All the Celtics have to do is win 4 out of five
- 24:17in order to come back and win the series.
- 24:20Have you seen people jump on it? And I would anticipate people
- 24:23are just still handing over their money, right to lay at the
- 24:25Celtics just because they believe what they saw in the
- 24:27first two games were flukes. Because they've been betting it
- 24:30since yesterday afternoon. We were still picking 110 each
- 24:33way, but it's almost 1:30. So here comes the Celtics.
- 24:37I did a Mall, Mall Shows podcast with Britain for the first time
- 24:40this morning, he said, Mike, the Celtics are winning the next
- 24:43four. You're never going to get a
- 24:44buyer a lower spot to buy on the Celtics.
- 24:46You should jump in. I said I'm not knowledgeable
- 24:49enough to do it. I find it unfathomable that you
- 24:54blow 220 point leads that you can't score in the last 8
- 24:57minutes. You don't adjust your game at
- 24:59all. I think that atmosphere will be
- 25:01electric in New York City. So I'm going to take a pass on
- 25:05take a pass on it. But he's convinced they win the
- 25:06next 4. What other series has your
- 25:09caught your attention, Mike? I'm you know what?
- 25:12I'm obsessed with the Timberwolves.
- 25:15I'm obsessed with Chris Finch. This guy has got to do the best
- 25:18interview in sports, his radio interviews.
- 25:21This guy is so good. I've been listening to him for a
- 25:24month. It's unbelievable how honest he
- 25:27is and everything that he says projects into the next game.
- 25:30You can almost bet them based off his interviews.
- 25:32He said it would be impossible for them to win game two against
- 25:35the Lakers and he listed all the reasons.
- 25:37He said all the matchups problems Golden State would give
- 25:40them because the Kerr has so many different lineups and
- 25:43they'll bait us into a running game.
- 25:45It happened in game one, right? Everybody's focused on his
- 25:49comments about the officiating. I'm more focused on his comments
- 25:51about Edwards and he's not going to.
- 25:53He has nothing to say to Edwards.
- 25:55This 23 year old kid wanted to be the leader of this team.
- 25:57Now he's got to go out there and lead them whether he can or he
- 26:00can't. I mean, they're still settling
- 26:02for all these jumpers last night.
- 26:03So. And Minnesota is fascinating.
- 26:05It's the first time I bet a point spread in the entire NBA
- 26:09playoffs other than betting Denver just to hedge my Clippers
- 26:11series playing Game 7 because I knew Harden wouldn't show up.
- 26:14And I laid the 10 1/2 last night and I said they're going to win
- 26:17by 30 or they're going to get beat.
- 26:18It's one of the two. I'm glad it was the former, but
- 26:22this Lynch is amazing. I don't know if he has the kind
- 26:25of personality to manage Anthony Edwards.
- 26:28I don't know if anybody does. I don't know if Phil Jackson
- 26:30does. But they are quite a study, this
- 26:32team. Question that hits all of us.
- 26:37You can myself and every listener out there that is
- 26:40wagering lawmakers are in the state of Iowa are talking about
- 26:45a major tax hike on online sports betting.
- 26:48What can you tell us about that the involvement and I mean are
- 26:51we talking about people now that are going up there to the hill
- 26:53and they're talking things over and and trying to what where are
- 26:56we in this and what should us as sports wagers in the state?
- 26:59What do we need to know about the potential of a tax hike?
- 27:02You know, it's very hard to speculate on these things
- 27:05because any type of these ideas with taxes and appropriations
- 27:11always have a lot of pushback on the other side.
- 27:14And all we can do is hope to lobby the lawmakers on how
- 27:19punitive these things can be and actually hurt revenues.
- 27:22And then it's very unpredictable.
- 27:24You never know what's going to happen.
- 27:25I mean, you can get a totalitarian state like Illinois
- 27:28that's just going to say, we're just going to screw everybody to
- 27:30the ground. We're Illinois and we don't
- 27:31care. And you get all these new states
- 27:34coming online with very reasonable rates like like
- 27:37Missouri and Michigan. I mean, the business climates
- 27:41are just so different state to state.
- 27:43And when you're not there, it's tough.
- 27:44You rely on, you know, some people there that you hope can
- 27:47help lobby for you. But I really don't want to
- 27:49speculate yet at this point. We'll go back to last Saturday,
- 27:52one of the few days that Circa will put horse racing and take
- 27:56wagers on horses. Derby Day, Oaks Day, Breeders'
- 28:00Cup days, and of course, the Preakness in the Belmont Stakes.
- 28:03But what kind of Derby did the day did you guys have?
- 28:07I saw some pictures. Seemed like there was a lot of
- 28:09people inside watching the race. What was it like, Mike?
- 28:12It's well, everybody came inside.
- 28:14It was raining. People from stadium swim came
- 28:16inside. The Legacy was, I think that
- 28:20might have been the most people that were ever at Legacy Club,
- 28:22of course, all dressed up in their suits and hats and all
- 28:25that. It's hard to say because it's
- 28:27apples to oranges because we got rid of the 6th odds, but the
- 28:31Para Mutual did go up 50% from last year and there was really a
- 28:35super horse. So you see the TV ratings were
- 28:39the highest in 20 some years almost maybe it maybe longer
- 28:42than that, 30 years. So that was good.
- 28:45I don't know, Kenny, what you can do because you have no
- 28:47commissioner of horse racing and you have all these separate
- 28:50companies that are publicly traded that own these Triple
- 28:52Crown races or these race tracks.
- 28:54I don't know. I mean, this is the fourth time
- 28:56since justify one of you don't have the Derby winner in the
- 28:58Preakness. I just think it really hurts the
- 29:01sport. It does.
- 29:02The Derby is the one day you create casual fan and then when
- 29:06they don't get a chance to see that horse, run.
- 29:08I know that today's horses aren't bred to go twice a month
- 29:10like they were 100 years ago and 50 years ago, and I don't know
- 29:14how these three corporations could ever get together to
- 29:17change the schedule. The Triple Crown.
- 29:19It's probably impossible, but it's really disappointing.
- 29:21It is and I was always old school.
- 29:24No, you can't change it blah blah.
- 29:26You have to. Yeah, it's got to be even.
- 29:28It's the Memorial Day or the 1st Saturday.
- 29:30Saturday in May for Saturday in June for Saturday in July.
- 29:33Do it that way. But something has to be done for
- 29:35that very reason. Casual horse racing fans.
- 29:38One day a year, if you're going to watch one horse race, it's
- 29:40the one that take place on the 1st Saturday in May.
- 29:43Anything else TC? One more we talked a week ago
- 29:46about college football getting some of those numbers up a
- 29:48little bit early. Are you guys going to come up
- 29:50with a goofy prop for Bill Belichick girlfriend?
- 29:55I wonder if Michael Lombardi leaked that story to Pablo
- 29:57Torres and they were. Feel.
- 29:59Really. Good.
- 30:01I'm what I'm interested in is to see if this 7 1/2 drops down to
- 30:05seven or if the juice gets heavier because it's just
- 30:07nothing but distractions out of that program so far.
- 30:10And it's, it's sort of embarrassing, I guess.
- 30:12I mean, even the distraction. Is she or isn't she banned?
- 30:15I mean that that story continues to get legs.
- 30:18It's crazy. Mike Pom, VP of operations at
- 30:21Circa Sports. If you're listening in Illinois,
- 30:23download the Illinois app. If you're in the state of Iowa,
- 30:26download the Circus Sports Iowa app.
- 30:28Mike, thanks for what you do for us.
- 30:29We'll talk to you in seven days. Thank you, Mike Palm.
- 30:32Thanks fellas, have a great. Weekend.
- 30:33Yeah, good to talk to you. Mike Palm, VP of operations at
- 30:37Circus Sports. That that's crazy.
- 30:40It truly is. Yeah.
- 30:42Now this is a hypothetical of all hypotheticals for you, OK,
- 30:45Because it's not going to happen with ferrets or Campbell, right.
- 30:48But would we like that if a story like this in our backyard?
- 30:52We love content. Yes.
- 30:55Yes, I think for that reason we would, right?
- 30:59You know, You know what? I'm not sure because I feel
- 31:00squeamish even talking about it because I'm an old man, right?
- 31:04And I can't. It's just.
- 31:07Creepy. The creepy factor, the ick
- 31:10factor. That's the part that gets me.
- 31:13It's my mind every single time these things happen.
- 31:17And then we get the release back from North Carolina.
- 31:19Responding to it today is. Distraction after another.
- 31:24Is. Is he being manipulated?
- 31:25Is. I think I'm pretty sure how she
- 31:30does it. Right, we we get that that part
- 31:33of it is the easy part, but it's something mentally.
- 31:38Well, how about all the properties she's accumulated
- 31:40since they got together the the mental?
- 31:42She's. Loaded all of a sudden.
- 31:45That's the concerning part is how nefarious is this?
- 31:49I don't know. That's why I was thinking, would
- 31:51this, would we like this in our backyard?
- 31:54I think the answer is no. For content it would be great.
- 31:59It would be. But to have to talk about it
- 32:02every single day, every single detail.
- 32:04Right that. Wouldn't be great for us.
- 32:07No, no, it wouldn't be great for us.
- 32:10I. We're meat and potatoes, not a
- 32:13whole lot of wiggle. Nope.
- 32:15Nope. Not at all.
- 32:16All right, take your time out, come back, finish up the
- 32:18program. Our week is almost done.
- 32:21Trent Condon, you'll make some plays.
- 32:24How did you do yesterday with your picks?
- 32:26I mean, you clobbered Minnesota, the T Wolves.
- 32:28You couldn't. The alt lines were flying.
- 32:30Well, we cruised with the Tigers in game one of the doubleheader
- 32:33-164 and we got the Capitals plus 1:45.
- 32:37That is 3 and O 2 perfect days this week, 5 and O Monday.
- 32:41And then Wednesday. Wednesday 3 and O let's and.
- 32:44What were you on? Tuesday, 2:00 and 4:00.
- 32:46Two and four and there was a two and three at Wednesday.
- 32:48So last night. Thursday was 3 and O2 perfects 2
- 32:52under 5 hundreds. So a winning day would be a
- 32:54winning week if you can put one together here today.
- 32:57Well, don't hold your breath, but we'll see what we can do.
- 32:58That's next. Circus Sports sponsors Miller
- 33:01and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:12Hi, Millory Condon, Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 33:15Our final segment again the drive this afternoon.
- 33:18Lucas and Sean are at Shields at Jordan Creek doing their show
- 33:22this afternoon from 2:00 until 5:00 at Jordan Creek in West Des
- 33:27Moines. Sunday night baseball is
- 33:30Phillies and the Guardians best series of the weekend.
- 33:36Maybe Mets cups. Oh, I think so.
- 33:40Pretty pretty easily for me. What else?
- 33:44Red Sox, Royals. Royals are playing well.
- 33:47Royals are playing well. Red Sox are going the other way.
- 33:50Reds, Astros. Maybe a cursory glance at that
- 33:53one. When do the White Sox and the
- 33:55Rockies play? I don't know.
- 33:58Oh my God. Do they are they matched up?
- 34:01I'm sure they are. They play everybody.
- 34:02Oh, that's right, yeah. At some point.
- 34:04Yuck. Yeah, that's for sure.
- 34:06I'll be watching my twins who are showing signs.
- 34:10I, I think you're right. Yep, I think you're right.
- 34:12That division's going to be tough.
- 34:13I think it's going to be a fight to the end.
- 34:15Obviously, the White Sox don't factor in, but the Tigers are
- 34:18off to a terrific start. Cleveland's Cleveland.
- 34:23You're Twins in the Royals. Twins won five in a row.
- 34:26Royals won six in a row. Tigers have won four in a row.
- 34:29That's amazing. Guardians won two in a row.
- 34:31Guardians of those teams only won with a negative run
- 34:34differential, which normally says they're going to pull back.
- 34:37But that's not what Cleveland does.
- 34:38How far are the Twins off off to the division lead?
- 34:407. Is it that?
- 34:42Many. Well, the Tigers are 25 and 13.
- 34:43That's amazing. Is that the best record in
- 34:45baseball? Has to be?
- 34:46It's the best lead, best in the American League by a long shot.
- 34:49And yes, it's the best in baseball.
- 34:51Good God, good for them. Baez is hitting the ball a
- 34:55little bit. You know what I'm?
- 34:56Glad you brought that up. You're 1000 and he's and he's
- 34:59fielding his position pretty well too.
- 35:02Maybe the demise of Javi Baez was greatly overstated.
- 35:05Couple of shout outs for this weekend.
- 35:07Had one of our listeners, his daughter's getting ready to
- 35:10pitch this afternoon for D Mac. Oh yeah, they're two wins away
- 35:14from making the JUCO College World Series, so shout out to
- 35:17the Bears, who are tremendous here.
- 35:19They're 53 and five this year. That's incredible.
- 35:23You and I softball, if you'll ever get the game.
- 35:24I was watching the first semifinal down at Drake for the
- 35:27MVC softball tournament. They're still in a delay because
- 35:30there's something wrong with the pitcher's mount.
- 35:32How does that happen? No idea it's not weather
- 35:35related. Now, do they put a new mound in?
- 35:37And it's not suddenly, I don't know what it was, but you and I
- 35:40this afternoon, Iowa State this evening, 5:30, they get Arizona
- 35:44in the semifinals in the Big 12. So a lot going on here as we
- 35:47make our way through the spring with a lot of local flavor.
- 35:50And we are just a couple weeks away from softball and baseball,
- 35:53high school season starting up. Really.
- 35:56Practice is underway and we'll be out there on the diamond
- 35:58coming up just a few weeks away. From having a three day weekend
- 36:02which moves my needle. Oh, you like that?
- 36:04I do like that. What are you betting on today?
- 36:06I'm betting from principal park, OH.
- 36:10Oh yeah? Are you going to the game
- 36:12tonight? Not tonight, not able to make it
- 36:14tonight. I'm hoping we're going to be
- 36:17able to make it tomorrow. Gotcha.
- 36:18Sunday's up, we got Mother's Day plans.
- 36:22Oh, right. Mother's Day.
- 36:23Yeah, yeah, yeah. You didn't get anything for
- 36:25Cindy. Well, is she my wife?
- 36:27She's a wife, but she's also a mother.
- 36:28She is, yes. You're married to her?
- 36:31We are, yes. So just do a little.
- 36:34So I think you're probably right, yeah.
- 36:36Maybe a stop on the way home? No.
- 36:37We'll figure something out, though.
- 36:40I got to get to Prairie Meadows, man.
- 36:41That's the guest picker in that paddock tonight.
- 36:44You're going to be out there united.
- 36:45Horse racing, it's going to be a busy one.
- 36:47I am going to bet the Hawkeyes I'm going to lay the -1 over.
- 36:50Mueller obviously gets the ball the three pitching matchups when
- 36:53he just take a look at the starting.
- 36:54Yep, Iowa has the advantage in all three, in all three of them.
- 36:57The problem? Oregon State's bullpen is
- 36:59outstanding and their lineup. That's why they're a top 1015
- 37:03team. Is there any TV of this?
- 37:04Probably not, huh? It's BTN plus.
- 37:06I don't have that. I know the BTN plus, so that's
- 37:09disappointing that that's what we're going to get out there.
- 37:12So get a play Iowa, though, in game one, lay the -110 that you
- 37:15can find at circa other places you're laying a little heavier
- 37:18juice. Play it circa other bets for
- 37:21today. Give me the Braves -140 tonight
- 37:24in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.
- 37:26And NHL didn't really didn't have anything that I loved.
- 37:31NBA didn't like the early game. I'm going to take the Nuggets,
- 37:34though, in a zigzag bounce back plus 5 1/2 at home.
- 37:40So win outright. Or you could just grab the
- 37:41points and have it be safe. I'm just going to grab the
- 37:44points. I think this is going to be a
- 37:45compelling game down to the wire young team against a team that
- 37:49yes, it's better than them, but still going to Denver, see the
- 37:53maybe the altitude has something to do with it.
- 37:55I'll take the Nuggets +5. And a half, I'm guessing the
- 37:58Florida Panthers are a big favorite tonight over the Leafs.
- 38:01Yeah, they have to win. They're down to zip.
- 38:03It was huge. What was it?
- 38:05NHL -235. Really.
- 38:08Yeah. You ever want to do that in a?
- 38:10Playoff game? Nope, Nope, Nope.
- 38:12Not for me. Not in the opening round.
- 38:14No Jets favored. They are -135.
- 38:18Well, they got the complete roster going tonight, so.
- 38:21Get it done. Let's get a happy Ken coming in
- 38:24next week. That's going to do it for us.
- 38:26Thanks for being with us, we appreciate it.
- 38:28Have fun at Prairie. I will.
