- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08shelf presents it to the other for discussion.
- 0:21This week coming off of Phil's shelf, 1995's glory days.
- 0:26Written and directed by Rich. Wilkes the man, Yes, the Legends
- 0:32one hit wonder. One might say, Philip, why is
- 0:35this movie on your shelf where you sloshed, perhaps?
- 0:40No, to be clear, those are your drinking days 95.
- 0:44Come on. No, not at all.
- 0:45I didn't start drinking. I was in my 20s ohe.
- 0:47Pussy. Yeah, yeah.
- 0:49I had a good solid run, you know.
- 0:51Yeah, this is what my weed days. Actually, yeah, you're glory
- 0:54days. You were in a.
- 0:55Days, I was going to the theatre a lot. 95 yeah.
- 0:58Yeah. Ironically, this wasn't in
- 0:59theatres anyway. VHS Why is this?
- 1:03Movie. This is a movie that I at the
- 1:05time hadn't fully become aware of Ben Affleck, so the love
- 1:09wasn't born of that. Not till 98.
- 1:12That's right, it was a recommendation from my dear
- 1:16friend Lawrence, whom we've commonly referred to as Larry.
- 1:19He doesn't mind. He does not mind.
- 1:21Maybe he does did back in the day for sure, but he was big
- 1:24into the punk scene, OK? I think the soundtrack is what
- 1:27drove him there and I saw it and it's right in my wheelhouse.
- 1:31You know, we've talked about this over the years and
- 1:33certainly movies like Beautiful Girls, but these pivot points in
- 1:38someone's life, the questioning what the next move is, this
- 1:43decision to stay or leave and certain things and comfort.
- 1:46Those are all things that really resonated with me 25 years ago,
- 1:5130 years ago. And so that was a real impetus
- 1:55and it I got, you know, it was a DVD and I've never seen in any
- 1:58other format that made no special features.
- 2:00You know, there's, I remember the box art, like the top of
- 2:04that is French Stewart. He's the man.
- 2:06So like the idea that French Stewart is your big sell in a
- 2:09movie was crazy to me. He's big in 95.
- 2:12Buddy, yeah, he was certainly bigger than Sam Rockwell would
- 2:14be and certainly bigger than Ben Affleck would be.
- 2:17So it's born out of that. It's a real tribute to Larry
- 2:20that I owned it because I was like, oh, I really like this.
- 2:23We watched it together and I was like, I'm all for.
- 2:24It thanks Larry, appreciate it. As I jokingly mentioned about
- 2:30the going to the theatre every 95 and this was nowhere to be
- 2:33seen, I looked up IMDb. It has no critic views so it
- 2:38might have been straight to DVD and that's fine.
- 2:41Yeah, it wasn't a made for TV movie.
- 2:43Truth disqualified qualifies. But while I'm in here, I'll give
- 2:48a description of what this movie is about.
- 2:50According to Old Faithful. With college graduation pending,
- 2:55the old gang tries to avoid the inevitability of breaking up and
- 2:59going forward with their lives. Let's bang on 100%.
- 3:03If there's one thing they got right about this movie, it's the
- 3:06I MB DA joke. Now, Phillip, I want to preface
- 3:11this with two things. OK, if that's OK, The double,
- 3:14double preface. The DP, I like to call it.
- 3:17It's your birthday weekend. Yeah.
- 3:19I feel that you may be strongly connected to this movie.
- 3:24Now we know why, Larry, and for other reasons.
- 3:28So I am going to pretend to love it.
- 3:30Don't be generous. Don't you dare do it.
- 3:33I I did narrow down to two major gripes.
- 3:35I have lots of comments, don't worry about that.
- 3:37But the gripes I got 2 distinct ones and out of respect you and
- 3:42being your birthday weekend, I watched it three times.
- 3:44That impresses me, yes. The other thing I want to say is
- 3:48when I negatively speak about these characters, which will
- 3:51happen because they are losers. Between the ages of 16 and 35, I
- 3:57was a loser. You gotcha.
- 3:58I am. That are you suggesting your
- 4:00post loser now? I am post loser if you can
- 4:03believe it. Alright, so when I insult them
- 4:05in the film, I am in turn insulting myself.
- 4:09Gotcha. But chicks love self
- 4:12degradation. What's that?
- 4:13Word deprecation, yes, and degradation too.
- 4:16I suppose. Been degraded one or two.
- 4:20Yeah, twice in. Your life Happily so signed up
- 4:24for it, but there we go. So, glory days.
- 4:27With Zed I want to be. Clear, I said, And the TV's from
- 4:32last week. I was certain this was dazed.
- 4:34And. Confused.
- 4:35I thought you might. With Matthew, yeah, Affleck, but
- 4:39instead of Cole Hauser, we get like Matt Damon for two seconds.
- 4:44So you definitely some distinct differences and that was more
- 4:47weed heavy. This was more.
- 4:49And dazing. Confused.
- 4:50Yeah, sure. 70s pot. Sure.
- 4:52Yeah. And this is drinking, too.
- 4:53There's there. There is, but I remember the
- 4:55weed. This one is we're focused in on
- 4:57the booze, which we'll obviously talk about as a theme throughout
- 4:59the movie though Phillip, but here we.
- 5:01Are yes, absolutely. And if you could do me one
- 5:04favor, if you allow this at the end, can we rank these by Who's
- 5:10the Biggest Loser for fun? Yeah, OK.
- 5:14When I'm prepared, so it won't be.
- 5:16Yeah, that's fine. And you can slot yourself.
- 5:18In where I fit on the scale. At the age of 22.
- 5:21OK, OK, give or take. Sure.
- 5:23OK. I think that's a great idea.
- 5:25But before we get to the end, let's get to the beginning.
- 5:28Makes sense. The movie begins with a voice
- 5:30over, and we talked a lot about voiceovers lately, so we're not
- 5:32going to bother spending time. But it is a way to introduce a
- 5:35large swath of characters and giving them, I don't want to say
- 5:40stereotypes. The movie isn't really
- 5:41stereotypical because they're all kind of the same, just
- 5:44variations on a theme, if you will.
- 5:46Yeah, I direction. That's right.
- 5:47What's next? But I do like that in order to
- 5:50ground us, it's a very short movie, like, you know, a tight
- 5:5390. I wasn't expecting a 2 hour film
- 5:55that's not built for that. So exactly right.
- 5:57And so because of that, in the case of brevity, I don't need to
- 6:00spend a ton of time with these characters because they are just
- 6:04sort of two-dimensional setups. So we introduced Jack, who's
- 6:07played by Ben Affleck. Of course, his theme generally
- 6:11unhappy with his girlfriend or he got dumped.
- 6:13So he's just sort of generally unhappy.
- 6:15Rob is with a girlfriend and he's not sure if he's happy and
- 6:20wants to figure out what the next step is.
- 6:22Sure. And that's played by Sam
- 6:23Rockwell. Yes, in a very early
- 6:25performance. Dennis, the lead actor in the
- 6:28movie. French Stewart.
- 6:29Rossey Stewart from 30 Rock. 30 Rock.
- 6:33Yes, Phillip. No, There's a rock.
- 6:35There's a planet. There's a lift cow too.
- 6:37Yes, 30 planets from the sun. Yeah, something.
- 6:39Like that? Yeah, not my world.
- 6:42I didn't really watch it, but it certainly was.
- 6:44Aware. Yeah.
- 6:44Third Third rock from the third. Thing you wanna make sure
- 6:46people. Know well that I'm not an idiot
- 6:48exactly let's be clear about loser he's the headmaster of the
- 6:52dorm or the frat house that they're living in and he's a
- 6:56career student that he says he's just kind of always taking a
- 6:59post doctorate and a postgraduate degree over and.
- 7:01Over. I knew a guy like that and he's
- 7:03in the attic too. That's important truth.
- 7:04That's where you want. To be Yeah, he peaked.
- 7:06He started in the basement. You get to the exactly.
- 7:08Drake knows what's up. We got Slosh.
- 7:12Your real name is. Josh.
- 7:14That was it. Josh.
- 7:14Yeah. OK.
- 7:15Become slosh. OK, Makes sense.
- 7:17He's a genius generally anyway. Questionable.
- 7:19Became drunk. Yeah, he did.
- 7:21Very relatable. Well, you're half there.
- 7:23Yeah, yeah. So touché took me a second to
- 7:28know what that meant. Yeah, there it is.
- 7:32Ricky, who's kind of a laughable, affable, lovable guy,
- 7:37that's he's a comic book creator, but he's the sad lonely
- 7:40guy. So French Stewart, Dennis, the
- 7:43guy that you would look and go, he's got his stuff together.
- 7:45He's just a little weird in comparison to everybody.
- 7:47And then everybody else has their arcs or their themes and
- 7:50so forth. And I'm surprised to hear that
- 7:52you dislike this movie so much, or at least the implication that
- 7:54you dislike this movie so. Much.
- 7:55Just the implied times, just the implication.
- 7:58Don't worry about it, losers. Yeah, because I feel like
- 8:02there's something at least potentially to glom onto with
- 8:06each of these characters. A little bit stereotypical, I
- 8:09hate to use the term, but two-dimensional characters, I
- 8:11would assume that you were able to at least find some of
- 8:14yourself or some of the questions or themes or things
- 8:17like that at some point in your life.
- 8:18Well, you see, I like my characters like I like my porn
- 8:223D. Gotcha.
- 8:24Gotcha. OK, virtual.
- 8:27I just, of course, you know, connection wise I was able to
- 8:33have a little bit with each character.
- 8:35Yeah, good. Like with Slosh, the alcoholism
- 8:38I guess would be the obvious one there.
- 8:40Rob, the pussy whipped stereotype nature of his
- 8:44character. Yeah, been there Mickey.
- 8:48Sad, lacking confidence. Certainly Dennis being an older
- 8:53student is what I originally wrote down and then when I
- 8:55watched it again I noticed he had golf clubs.
- 8:58At the end. He's a golfer.
- 8:59Yep. Connection made, locked it in.
- 9:02Yeah. And then Jack just kind of a sad
- 9:05dude, but pretending everything is OK.
- 9:08So I didn't have like, a direct, of course, not connection to
- 9:11this movie, but I was able to at least have that.
- 9:15What it really did for me, the movie overall was highlights the
- 9:20drinking culture we have in North America in general.
- 9:23So that was something that popped to me this time in
- 9:25hindsight of living my life now versus back then.
- 9:29So it was kind of interesting to watch and sad at the same time.
- 9:33Interesting pick that apart. So some judgment, major
- 9:35judgments. But on myself too, like I as I
- 9:38said at the beginning, I did variations of these things.
- 9:42And maybe that's part of the reason I didn't like it, because
- 9:45I don't have fond memories of that life, because there's a
- 9:49fine line between living and learning and just being stupid.
- 10:02He's this guy. He's wearing his Hate comic book
- 10:04T-shirt and the guys doing schtick to hand out all the
- 10:08tassels and the hats and the cloaks and such.
- 10:10And there's something about Line U frustration.
- 10:15OHS you talking with Sean Whalen scene?
- 10:18Yeah, that's your boy. Oh, yeah.
- 10:21He's a twister, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's my boy.
- 10:23He's one of my favorite scenes. It's great.
- 10:25He's hilarious. One liner, just like banging
- 10:28them out per person. I think he has every right to
- 10:30criticize his haircut. Oh yeah, it's talking about
- 10:33here. That's 1990.
- 10:34I had the goatee for awhile. I would never do it again.
- 10:37No. I'm not allowed to, actually.
- 10:39It's not that I don't want. Did it for one day and I was
- 10:42done. Yeah, I got voted off.
- 10:46The hair is questionable, but that's, you know, that's just
- 10:48exactly. It's like saying perms in the
- 10:5180s or shoulder pads, like yeah, it's just the way it is.
- 10:55That line up frustration is something that I really both
- 10:58connect with because I worked in retail for so long and worked at
- 11:03the airport for so long that I just see people's eyes glaze
- 11:06over. Oh yeah, rage and frustration.
- 11:08And yes, I've been retail buddy. I know.
- 11:10That's all. Right, like Sean Whalen, I would
- 11:15stretch it out a little bit, you know, if I knew that the guy
- 11:17behind was. Angry.
- 11:18You're in control. I don't know that I'm playing.
- 11:21Those absolutely fiddle. Yeah.
- 11:22I used to sacrifice his sale periodically.
- 11:25Yeah. And like, no, we don't have the
- 11:26phone in stock. I'm sorry you've waited all that
- 11:29time. I got nothing.
- 11:30I ever tell you the Apple story. I'm going to tell the Apple
- 11:32story. I would love I.
- 11:33Think the statute is gone now but so I worked at the video
- 11:37store and it was Apple release day one of the iPhones.
- 11:40I don't remember the iteration mid 2.
- 11:42Thousands Terrible sales person. And I was very anti cell phone,
- 11:44as you know, particularly in the early days.
- 11:46Yes, three or four people milling about the front of the
- 11:49store. Now I get there around 7, door
- 11:51opens around 9:00. I set up the wall.
- 11:55It was, you know, doing all the things and things I love, and
- 11:57then I wait and wait and wait and I know what they're there
- 12:02for. What else would they be there
- 12:03for? I get to the door at 5 minutes
- 12:06to 9 and I said are you guys here for the phone?
- 12:12And they go, yeah, I said. We don't have any.
- 12:16So we made him wait the two. Hours.
- 12:17I made him wait the two hours. Nice, I said.
- 12:19There's a store up the road, they'll probably have some.
- 12:23And they were so mad at me. They won't have any by the time
- 12:25they get there. Exactly.
- 12:26You know, it's the best part of that story.
- 12:28Though. 4 phones sitting in the. Oh, you dirty Rascal.
- 12:32I just didn't want to deal with the sales and I didn't like,
- 12:35Speaking of management, I didn't like that they were doing this
- 12:39like freaks, you know, lined up for a phone.
- 12:42It's a poor reflection of our society.
- 12:44People like that. Poor reflection on everybody
- 12:46involved. Just waiting for a phone for
- 12:48like, it's ridiculous, Yeah. But I'm also a pretty distinct
- 12:52asshole for that. Of course, that's why we love
- 12:55you. And I've waited out overnight
- 12:57for the mini SNES for the PlayStation.
- 13:01OK, wait a minute. That's.
- 13:03But anyway, that's just a funny. Story for you.
- 13:05I'm sure I heard it before but it's like I'm hearing for the
- 13:07first time. I love it.
- 13:09So anyway, that guy kind of manipulating Jack a little bit
- 13:11made me smile. But I've also been in line
- 13:13sometimes where I ended up paying for an old lady's grocery
- 13:16bill. Good for you.
- 13:17Because she was just taking too God damn long.
- 13:19Like, you know, just put these three things with her and I'll
- 13:22pay for let's go. She can bang it.
- 13:24I've got to. Go good for.
- 13:25You. So that's that and we get Rob
- 13:27and Mickey. They've off to their own thing
- 13:30and this scene doesn't really have any other purpose.
- 13:33Yeah, I don't know if it needs to be in.
- 13:35The but to give us Matthew McConaughey, he's great.
- 13:37What are your thoughts on his performance here?
- 13:40He's fine. We've talked about him a little
- 13:41bit of Interstellar, you know, we've mentioned in the past,
- 13:43but. He's doing his thing, I think.
- 13:46It's just a crazy, bizarre series of choices that's
- 13:51happening in this scene right now.
- 13:52It's just. To amplify Robb's situation,
- 13:55generally speaking, I appreciate the Mickey.
- 13:58I appreciate the drinking on the job.
- 14:00These are things I've done. He's looking a little.
- 14:03Disheveled, to say the least, He.
- 14:05Is his wife is leaving like he's.
- 14:07Just he's yeah, I'm sure he. Had fun with it.
- 14:09Oddly enough, when I watched it the second third time I'm like
- 14:12what is this job? But to me it looked.
- 14:16Like a U-Haul rental place, you don't sell that.
- 14:19They just come in like I need one.
- 14:21That's it. These guys aren't keeping the
- 14:23truck. Maybe it's sales?
- 14:24And rentals maybe covering both sides of it, just there's.
- 14:27No reason for this to be a sales position.
- 14:30What size of truck do you need? How much stuff do you have?
- 14:34For how long do? You and bring.
- 14:35It back on this day. Make sure it's gassed up.
- 14:38Sign here please. So seem pretty unnecessary when
- 14:41I realized that they were just all this U hauls essentially.
- 14:44Considering where this guy's went, what a strange, bizarre
- 14:48performance in a strange, bizarre movie.
- 14:50There's a lot of that. Though when you like of actors,
- 14:52you go back and we forget them or haven't seen them or just
- 14:56have these small roles, Yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 14:57It is kind of fun and like looking at Sala, who plays
- 15:00Luther, John Reese Davis. Oh yes.
- 15:03Yes, that establishes. Dennis's, well, Luther's
- 15:07affection, that relationship led me before we get too deep into
- 15:10it, but that relationship and how Dennis is seeking approval
- 15:16right as an artist, as a student and so forth.
- 15:18And Luther offers the opportunity to continue his
- 15:22studies and beyond under study. Exactly.
- 15:24You know what I mean? Yeah.
- 15:27So we're presented them as two-dimensional characters in
- 15:30the opening sort of montage and introduction through the
- 15:33voiceover and these first wave of scenes.
- 15:36I would suggest make them a little bit 3 dimensional, add
- 15:39some depth to their character for sure.
- 15:41Exactly. These are real.
- 15:42People, I didn't feel anybody terribly stereotype.
- 15:46No, the only people that really struck me is not real really,
- 15:50was guys like Matthew McConaughey, who I'm sure, but
- 15:53that performance is so heightened.
- 15:54But that's for jokes, right? That's clearly just to be
- 15:57actually and hilarious. And that's early on.
- 15:58I forget about that scene like, yeah, 3 minutes after.
- 16:01And if it weren't anyone but Matthew McConaughey, you
- 16:03probably would never think of that scene again.
- 16:05Right? Like, but because it's such a
- 16:07huge star in our modern world, to watch him in this, you're
- 16:10like, holy shit, there he is. You know, So it makes a little
- 16:12bit more memorable. Handsome, good looking man.
- 16:14Not so much in that movie, but I have to tell you, you know
- 16:18Mickey is the comic book artist. Uh huh.
- 16:21His. Caption to the cartoon.
- 16:25Even Hitler had a girlfriend. I love it.
- 16:27Yeah, it's true though in 1995 I was a really sad, pathetic,
- 16:31lonely, sad, pathetic boy. I would suggest watching this
- 16:35movie that Mickey was be the one that I'm most connected to that
- 16:38is. Too bad to hear, yeah?
- 16:40Because he's. The worst in this?
- 16:42Tell me. He's sympathetic, We.
- 16:44Talked about a couple weeks ago in Rounders.
- 16:47I don't know if you remember our conversation.
- 16:48I remember everything. Buddy.
- 16:51Not only is he a bad character, he's a bad actor.
- 16:55Yeah. I thought he was terrible in
- 16:56this movie. He didn't act again.
- 16:58He had a small yeah, like, yeah, like one small role.
- 17:01I think I looked at his filmography and he's making
- 17:04terrible, terrible choices. I did not like him at all, you
- 17:07know, And his whole arc was the least spoiler.
- 17:11Yeah, sure. At the end of our rankings,
- 17:13Yeah. Least favorite.
- 17:15Yeah. I like nothing about this guy.
- 17:16OK, Good artist. And then like his dreads?
- 17:19No. Well, I mean, I don't.
- 17:21Care something, I don't care, but I mean, I don't like the
- 17:24overalls with no shirt underneath.
- 17:26Yeah. That I don't like, yeah, I don't
- 17:28record. I.
- 17:29Have now, if not before, but that There, I'll say that now
- 17:33leave that little tease you've already spoiled.
- 17:35Yeah, yeah, spoiled my number one least favorite character at
- 17:39the end. You know I don't.
- 17:40Think you're wrong. I think ultimately the character
- 17:42that I connected with, then I look back and much like maybe
- 17:46how you're looking at your drunken self from those 8 is
- 17:49with a bit of shame and a bit of like, wow, yeah.
- 17:52It was like, I was that guy, which I thought I was that guy.
- 17:55Yeah. Of course, from a romantic point
- 17:57of view, it's like, oh, he's such a sweet kid who just can't
- 18:01find love and he's trying. But in hindsight, watching you
- 18:04going like, yeah, I wouldn't want to hang out with this guy,
- 18:05no. Absolutely not.
- 18:06And so those. Are things that I can look at
- 18:08myself and think, well that's maybe why I didn't have a
- 18:11girlfriend was. You know some of those things,
- 18:13right? Like that's what I'm projecting
- 18:14out the problem. With this is he gets the.
- 18:16Girl, in the end, yeah, but it's only Alyssa Milano, one of the
- 18:19most beautiful women in the world, so she's the boss.
- 18:22Right. As I'm concerned he's great my.
- 18:24Brother had posters of her she's.
- 18:25Gorgeous fan in her. So like at.
- 18:26Least it's realistic in the end is what I'm saying.
- 18:29Yeah, sure. That's it.
- 18:30Yeah. And this is actually the point
- 18:32where we meet her character, Alyssa.
- 18:34I don't even know her name in the movie.
- 18:36Chelsea. Chelsea is her name.
- 18:38Chelsea, Chelsea. And it's good that she's there.
- 18:41So Joni? Yep.
- 18:44Isn't the only? Girl, yeah, I love this.
- 18:46Rob's girlfriend tags along. They say before don't bring.
- 18:50Her. Don't bring her, Don't bring
- 18:52her. It's a guys.
- 18:54Day guys, day boys, hang out now.
- 18:57I don't want to get. Into a big thing with you.
- 18:59OK, We're dealing with another Joe.
- 19:01Yes, yes. You know we lost.
- 19:03On me so I'm. Interested to see what.
- 19:04Side of the fence you land on on this.
- 19:07Should she be there? Is it OK that she's there?
- 19:10Can the world's collide, Phil? Because George Costanza would
- 19:13say they cannot. I am on the George side.
- 19:17Of things, yes, OK, I am not. I find it very challenging in
- 19:21the past in my life and still today to integrate not just boys
- 19:27and girls or what have you, but also video store friends versus
- 19:31airline friends. Different pockets.
- 19:33I feel it. They exist in their own world,
- 19:36compartmentalized in their own space.
- 19:38That's your game. That's how it is.
- 19:40I wish I. Could be more like that's why
- 19:42you've never met. Anybody I worked with at the
- 19:43airport? Store.
- 19:45Friend and that is it. Pretty much submit.
- 19:48That one guy I met, sure, but the other the other day, yeah.
- 19:51Don't know Larry. Larry love to I met some at the
- 19:56wedding, obviously, but I don't remember anything.
- 20:00I was one of these guys. That's right, I was sloshed.
- 20:02So that makes. Complete sense to me, it changes
- 20:05the dynamic and particularly when you're 1819 years old and
- 20:08much more maybe than now. But yeah, it's a thing.
- 20:11Now you're like 1. Person more.
- 20:13Yeah, maybe not, you say, but you're Phil.
- 20:15Yeah, I'm Dave and I can be the same person.
- 20:18That's right in every situation though, However, though I do
- 20:20still find myself a bit of a chameleon, of course, a little
- 20:23bit differently and go. And that's just my human nature.
- 20:25Yeah. I think it's because you're
- 20:26probably unhappy with yourself. I could.
- 20:28Sounds about right. Well, it's the thing that I.
- 20:30Do Right, Like, you're sort of like you're this person to these
- 20:32people because they know you as this person.
- 20:34Yeah. And it's not always so dark or,
- 20:36you know, whatever it's built in.
- 20:37It is human nature, I think, to find your personality can pivot,
- 20:41right? If someone's really sad and
- 20:43you're the funny guy, you can either use that to liven them up
- 20:47or you can modulate down South that you're more maybe sensitive
- 20:50guy today versus whatever I've been known to modulate.
- 20:53Now my additional thought to this scene was I would almost
- 20:57accept her being there if she enjoyed the event, but once I
- 21:02saw her more or less upset that she got wet, I'm like, you're
- 21:06not even having fun with what's here, the rides and stuff.
- 21:10Was she? Upset because she got wet?
- 21:12Or was she upset because Rob told her to shut the fuck up?
- 21:15Oh, at that point. Had he said that?
- 21:17I don't. I'm not sure the.
- 21:18Timeline OK but definitely when she gets told to shut the fuck
- 21:21up she's not happy. Fair.
- 21:23Enough. It's just not a good idea and to
- 21:25me that's the big crux of it. And her character, I will say
- 21:29that she's got Joe like qualities, which is to say, oh.
- 21:33Not. Supportive of yeah, whatever.
- 21:36She has friends. Exactly.
- 21:38Do your thing. You're seeing mom in the morning
- 21:41for breakfast. Yeah.
- 21:41One thing that irked me about watching this movie in hindsight
- 21:45because I didn't do this is you can balance these things is how
- 21:49Doesn't have to be 1 or nothing. One or the other.
- 21:52You can have a girlfriend and have guy friends too and manage
- 21:55that, it just takes a certain level of maturity and strength
- 21:59where you're not bothered by the constant ribbing that the guys
- 22:03might give you because they're either jealous or just
- 22:06frustrated with. That's their relationship to
- 22:07you, right? I bust your balls, you bust my
- 22:09balls. And one of my best friends,
- 22:11Graham's, another video store guy.
- 22:13Never met him, though. I don't.
- 22:14Know why I was a video store guy?
- 22:16Just saying he was at the wedding, OK?
- 22:19But I remember meeting his then girlfriend for the first time
- 22:24and I remember busting his balls and kind of busting her balls
- 22:29the same way I would bust his balls.
- 22:31Because to me, we're all part of the same.
- 22:34You're like family. You told me this.
- 22:35Thing, yes, I remember now and then later.
- 22:37I distinct memory of like. Why are you such an asshole?
- 22:41And I thought. Oh, I didn't modulate.
- 22:44I was like, no, I'm going to bust your balls because I like
- 22:47busting balls. She has no balls and she has no
- 22:49balls. That's on him for not giving
- 22:50her. The skinny on you.
- 22:54Came in a little like Hot Hot General, but anyway, so that was
- 22:57something where to think about the way that relationship goes.
- 23:00In this moment. I was again reminded that this
- 23:03is very telling. This is how it goes.
- 23:06And in later life, like you said, you can merge and
- 23:08integrate. But it still is a thing, I think
- 23:10even today, if you brought your wife to a cottage.
- 23:15Trip Cottage, there's a good example, right?
- 23:17You you would act completely different.
- 23:19Maybe not completely. But you would act differently.
- 23:21I sure. Yeah.
- 23:22And everyone around you would then act differently as well.
- 23:25But I could be like 80% of myself anywhere I take my wife.
- 23:29And I think that's a win if you can hit that.
- 23:31Oh, yeah, sure, Mark. Yeah.
- 23:32You're never going to be 100. Percent, I don't think it's
- 23:34wrong to not be 100% necessarily, but it does change
- 23:37the dynamics. It does change.
- 23:39Cannot be a below 50% if you're within your lines everybody.
- 23:44At that point, you're. Just then it's.
- 23:45That's a problem, yeah. So I really.
- 23:47Like the scene, I like the way that relationship is called out
- 23:49because Rob is at that point where he wants to be with the
- 23:52boys and you see him wrestle throughout the whole movie.
- 23:54It's really his movie. I think he's the strongest
- 23:57character. Ohm, how are?
- 23:59You now spoiling shit. Well, I mean like he's got the.
- 24:02Best arc, yeah, I would say. And everybody else is just
- 24:05fucking around. But he's the only one with any
- 24:07real, at that point, responsibility.
- 24:08Yeah, I really have. Given away the first and last
- 24:10because it's really the game a little, you know?
- 24:13Three of them are interchangeable.
- 24:15We do find out also that Mickey is good at piggyback rides.
- 24:20I've never. Done one.
- 24:21No, I don't of the upper strength or.
- 24:25Somebody. Yeah, I don't have that.
- 24:26What I liked about it as well, just to put a cap on that
- 24:29particular scene, is that Alyssa Milano shows up, Chelsea shows
- 24:32up, and everybody is like, hey, chills, come on in.
- 24:36Which is one of the. Guys, one of the.
- 24:37Guys, but not really because so it's like it's boys and it's
- 24:39boys night girl. It's a relationship.
- 24:41Status, yeah, it's a whole different.
- 24:42World, right? Yeah, It's not gender.
- 24:44Specific, yeah. You know what's funny is I
- 24:46certainly remember not being able to do things like that
- 24:50because I had to be with. The girlfriend?
- 24:53Yeah, sure. So I I can't say.
- 24:55I have a lot of memories of those days out with the guys
- 24:59now. I do have memories of being in a
- 25:02house or apartment that I lived in with a couple of guys a
- 25:05little bit later in my life. We had a bar as well, one of our
- 25:08roommates with school, he built it.
- 25:10So that was kind of cool. I did like that, but I'm not
- 25:15sure that I want to stay in that forever.
- 25:19I love living alone. But here we have Jack suggesting
- 25:24that let's stick around for at least another year, or forever,
- 25:29as he says, because that takes balls.
- 25:32And I don't know if you picked up on this, he's playing darts.
- 25:36At first I thought the clock was the dartboard, but.
- 25:39He just has bad. Aim.
- 25:40I saw the dartboard later to the left, but we had a few drinks
- 25:44and he stops the clock essentially.
- 25:47Now we found out from draft day. The good ones know how to slow
- 25:51it down, but clearly he's one of the great ones because Ben here,
- 25:56Jack has found a way to stop the clock.
- 25:58That's right. And live witness forever.
- 26:01Yep. There you go for a however on
- 26:03the nose that. Metaphor is obviously a little
- 26:06bit, but. That's OK, I love it Get.
- 26:07One freebie. I love it.
- 26:09Yeah, because I get that feeling, whether it be on
- 26:13vacation, whether that be in certain circumstances in my life
- 26:18along the way. I was going when I moved to
- 26:19Vancouver, I was going to be for one year.
- 26:22OHP called it. That was it and when I year
- 26:25ended it was like 8-9 years. Wasn't it I was there for.
- 26:27Just under 10. And what happened was I just
- 26:31wanted more. I did.
- 26:31Why would I give that up, right? And I wanted to do new things
- 26:34and different things. I met new people and all of a
- 26:36sudden it's one year, I'll do one more.
- 26:38Time flies at that. Age and then I'll do 1.
- 26:40More because I want to live alone and then I'm all alone and
- 26:43I want to live on the beach and why would I ever want to stop
- 26:45this from happening? So the idea that these guys feel
- 26:49like in that moment, and I moved out when I was 21, so they're
- 26:51like roughly in that same, yeah, same ballpark.
- 26:54Ballpark. And so it made complete sense to
- 26:56me in ways that I didn't understand in 95 because I was
- 26:59pretty miserable in that age, unhappy, lonely, sad, right?
- 27:03Like, so I don't want time to stop then.
- 27:05No, but seven years later in that same position, not
- 27:09graduating university, but in that same, I'm in a new place,
- 27:12new world. I want to keep time where it is.
- 27:14Time flies when you're. Having fun buddy, totally
- 27:16enjoying yourself and you don't want it.
- 27:18To fly though, right, you gotta slow it down like the greats.
- 27:22So this scene. Continues to resonate overtime.
- 27:24And also when I think back, and this is maybe more of this
- 27:27forlorn later in life thing, as you know, it's my birthday.
- 27:30As you mentioned the idea that time takes people away from you,
- 27:35right? I think back to some of my best
- 27:37friends in the world at the time and how many of them have stood
- 27:40around, right? You and I have been friends for
- 27:43almost, what is it, 26 years. We didn't meet in two. 1000
- 27:48Sorry 16. Years. 16 years.
- 27:50I carried A1 then I should have, right?
- 27:52Yeah, but like 16? Years and we're having I'm happy
- 27:54to be here and my friend Graham and Neville those and Randall,
- 27:57these are people I've known for 25 years can you rank us at the.
- 28:00End as well Try to do that. And Larry Lawrence is a guy that
- 28:03I knew in 1996 You. Make it sound like his name is
- 28:07Larry Lawrence Lawrence, but I don't.
- 28:09See these. People often when you do though,
- 28:12does it feel like I like it does always feels, yes.
- 28:15Yeah, that's the great thing about those.
- 28:17People, the problem is when I was living there, there were
- 28:20fifteen of those people that just didn't survive the day at
- 28:24the time and the distance or some of them died, right?
- 28:27Like that's just the world. So I just think that it's
- 28:30interesting that why wouldn't you want to capture?
- 28:32Because what time does is it takes people away, whether it be
- 28:35through death, something more morbid, or just time and space
- 28:38and move away and life goes on. And now we don't talk much
- 28:40anymore. I get that.
- 28:42I get the argument for Jack at that age for sure.
- 28:44Yeah. So we basically.
- 28:45Says like, no, we're going to try and crystallize this there.
- 28:48Something about that really, really crystallized with me.
- 28:50I would say it's poignant. Though, would you?
- 28:53Maybe. You don't really need an excuse
- 29:02to have a party at that age. And if you have the means, let's
- 29:06do it. Let's get the Flyers printed.
- 29:08Just don't give one to Matt Damon and not him.
- 29:12He's a PUD whacker. Yeah, he's pudd whacker.
- 29:14I don't know what that is. It's like multiple.
- 29:17Miggs in Silence of the Lambs, if you recall, no.
- 29:21He's the guy that. Just mercilessly jerks off all
- 29:24the time. OHT.
- 29:25Got you. Yeah.
- 29:26Now the real question to this, though, is have you ever been
- 29:29too drunk to fuck? I don't like to swear on the
- 29:31podcast, but I have to because that's just quoting you're.
- 29:34Just quit and that's the. Button he's wearing and I
- 29:37actually have the answer for that, Yes, Yeah.
- 29:39Oh yeah, I've been in many. Situations where I've had too
- 29:42much to drink and I can't operate whiskey Dick.
- 29:44That I did not understand until my mid 20s.
- 29:49I'm not going to share too. Much about this all to say is
- 29:51that is accurate now. I never used that as my in
- 29:55clearly no, but it's the fact it's like playing cool.
- 29:59You gotta find that sweet spot and sweet spot there.
- 30:02Yeah, but I only ever drink 2. Fuck really.
- 30:05So that was always like, this is my end.
- 30:07This is the only way I know Yeah, rarely went so far that I
- 30:10was like, ooh, that's smart is not working.
- 30:12I had no self-control right. So that one will be 20 and
- 30:16that's quick too right. So I remember passing out of my
- 30:19I think I told you this one. My girlfriend brought another
- 30:21girl over and things were up right through the wheels were in
- 30:24motion. I literally slept through it and
- 30:25like that that's. These are the memories I have
- 30:29from this, which is why I didn't maybe enjoy.
- 30:31Romanticism of those early days. Yeah, that's fair.
- 30:34Unfortunately, the closest analog I have was there was
- 30:38fireworks. Lived right on the beach.
- 30:39And there's a friend of mine lived above the this video
- 30:41store. So we had a that's cool.
- 30:43We called it Melrose Place because it was all like a bunch
- 30:45of courtyards. All the all the rooms came out
- 30:48into this courtyard. So we would hang out there and
- 30:51watch the fireworks. And I think I may have mentioned
- 30:53Rod Loray. Yeah, Yeah.
- 30:55From Jason. Michael Myers.
- 30:57Michael Myers close. OK, he was part of that group
- 31:00and I went to use his washroom and he had a urinal and oha
- 31:05toilet in his bathroom and I was like this is cool.
- 31:07That's the. Life right there and my buddy.
- 31:09Jay was like kind of my and he worked with us and he's an
- 31:11actor. He was in the first season of
- 31:13The Last of Us. He's popped up in there.
- 31:14Cool. Anyway, great guy.
- 31:16I worked until six party was starting at 6:00.
- 31:18So I was like, oh, went home quickly downed an entire bottle
- 31:22of Smirnoff ice in the shower. My God.
- 31:25And then did another one, then got to the bar, hit two shots,
- 31:29then went upstairs drive the shot of some moonshine.
- 31:32Oht my. God that stuff will kill you.
- 31:34Took a shot of moonshine. And so by 8:00 I was just
- 31:38comatose in the bathroom. Hmm.
- 31:41My paralyzed. What felt like from my waist
- 31:43down, I couldn't move. I'm sitting on the tub side.
- 31:46Yeah. Had vomited 3 times.
- 31:48People were coming in to use the washroom and I was like, I can't
- 31:52move. They lifted my legs to turn me
- 31:54over into the bathtub so that they could pee these women.
- 31:58Yeah. And then they would turn me
- 32:00back. I was in.
- 32:01Such dire. Straits and by 9:00 or 9:30 I'm
- 32:05totally sober. I basically gone through all of
- 32:07the cycles. Hmm.
- 32:09And by like maybe 10 I was like, OK.
- 32:12Let's go. Moonshine landed me in the
- 32:15bathtub. Fortunately, it was just me.
- 32:17Mike Pat. Like just the fellas.
- 32:18Sure, Mike got his hands on this moonshine.
- 32:21I think I was pissing in the sink or is going to at end of
- 32:25the bathtub and with mustard in my mouth.
- 32:27Like I was so weird. Questionable decisions, my man.
- 32:30No fond memories there. That's great.
- 32:32Yeah, too drunk to fuck that night.
- 32:34Yeah, I would say probably, Definitely so.
- 32:38I didn't even realize these guys had a band, and they kind of
- 32:42mentioned they did, but I meant like just a band of brothers,
- 32:46you know, just a posse. But no, we got Jack on drums.
- 32:49We got Rob, sexy lead singer. Guy.
- 32:52It is. Nice Jacket.
- 32:53It's him singing, too. Yeah, I can see that.
- 32:55Yeah. I don't love grunge music, OK.
- 32:58I listen to it a little bit in this era because I felt I was
- 33:03supposed to like that was the thing.
- 33:04But I liked a couple of Offspring songs.
- 33:06I had Green Day Dookie, so it's part of my repertoire a little
- 33:10bit. But now I have no sort of.
- 33:13Connection. I love all the music in this.
- 33:15It's upbeat. Yeah, give it that.
- 33:17Like Weezer? Yeah.
- 33:19Sure, Weezer like the muffs? Yeah, I love the soundtrack.
- 33:22I I figured you would. Yeah, fits the movie.
- 33:24I think generally speaking, it's that attitude, right?
- 33:26Southern California post teenage angst, you know, college years
- 33:29sort of thing. And Speaking of angst.
- 33:30Jack, in the midst of all of this, he shoots down Alyssa
- 33:34Milano. So right away, we're obviously
- 33:36watching a movie. Yeah.
- 33:37It's like Rounders. It's like Damon saying no to
- 33:40Famca. Yeah.
- 33:42Come on. I.
- 33:43Mean, I would have been busting your.
- 33:44Balls for months and you're saying no to Famca?
- 33:48I didn't like the. Whole how she works right
- 33:50shoulder thing. Really.
- 33:51Yeah, I didn't find her. Attractive, generally speaking,
- 33:53so that I was fine with this I respect because Mickey, sure,
- 33:58but. That's.
- 33:59Like, Sir, now I wouldn't have the courage or the backbone, the
- 34:03gumption to not do it. If she's after me, I'm in like I
- 34:06like. I'll worry about that later.
- 34:08Yeah, that's that's tomorrow's problem.
- 34:09Yeah. But his bigger problem is
- 34:12getting on that phone because once he says the FU to man
- 34:18hands, that's man hands. By the way, I don't know if you
- 34:21knew that Gillian from Seinfeld. Was it?
- 34:24Yeah, it was amazing when he was talking with his parents and
- 34:29she's topless. Yeah.
- 34:30I was just thinking about her hands.
- 34:32No, like, I want her hands actually.
- 34:33Not watching the movie, Right? No, we were hands.
- 34:37But that bridge is now burnt. Once you say that, there's no
- 34:42coming back to that. Now, I've.
- 34:44I haven't said that, but there's been conversations where things
- 34:48have been said and you can't come back from it.
- 34:51No, it doesn't matter. You can write a poem.
- 34:53You can do all these things. Flowers the.
- 34:56Whole thing that's like tattooed into their.
- 34:58Brain you can think you've. Gotten over cause that's what
- 35:00ends up happening with a lot of that stuff too, is that you say
- 35:02those things, you're like, no, no, here's the flowers, let's
- 35:04try it again. But it's there.
- 35:05It's there and it's tough to walk it back, OK.
- 35:08Can't be done, so yeah for him to.
- 35:09Dial the number and have all. The things.
- 35:12To say and and only come with fuck you because of how you're
- 35:17making me feel, There's something resonates with me on
- 35:19that too. Yeah, I've never really done
- 35:21that either. Like the fuck you think?
- 35:22But I did throw a can of coke at someone's head.
- 35:24So I mean, tempers can flare. Diet Coke.
- 35:28At least there's a Pepsi, actually.
- 35:29Ohk, that's important. Obviously didn't add her right,
- 35:32but it was like in the vicinity and it was pretty like my one of
- 35:36my lower moments could it deflected?
- 35:37Like the bullet in Armageddon at the beginning on the boat when
- 35:39Ben Affleck yes, no shot in the leg there.
- 35:41You don't know, you got to be careful buddy.
- 35:44It was outdoors so it was no deflection.
- 35:46But either way, I kind of appreciated that level of fuck
- 35:49you for making me feel that way. And another fuck you comes soon
- 35:52after this, which is Joni and her friends show up and they're
- 35:55a little drunk. This is a.
- 35:57Joe Mobile, this is Joe to me. Right, this is that kind of
- 35:59thing. Very close, and Rockwell has my
- 36:02favorite line in the movie. Second, maybe, probably my
- 36:06favorite line actually, where he just says don't do that.
- 36:10These are my friends. Yeah, I agree with you 100.
- 36:12Percent here. She wasn't very nice, no.
- 36:14And he kept it cool for a while and she was just pressing the
- 36:17buttons, Yeah. And I didn't appreciate it, no.
- 36:20Now I think that. Relationship can be salvaged.
- 36:23Nothing that couldn't be unsaid exactly for sure.
- 36:25But I was like, no, you don't. Just don't do that.
- 36:28Support. Yeah, Yeah.
- 36:29And that's where that line is like I'm being silly, goofy guy,
- 36:32as he says, she's just being mean and you're being mean.
- 36:34Yeah, it wasn't. Playful.
- 36:36That's it. There's a.
- 36:36Difference. Yeah.
- 36:37The principle of don't come to my house and make fun of me when
- 36:41it's not part of the vibe. What I did with Graham like that
- 36:46felt like we were all in it together and what happened was
- 36:49we weren't just a simple misunderstanding.
- 36:51That's it, right? I came a little too hot and it's
- 36:52fine. Obviously all of us are quick
- 36:54apology, fine, moving on. Now let's remember after this
- 36:57little outburst that Rob. Has to meet her mom.
- 37:02The crux, the whole thing in the morning.
- 37:04Yeah, but we get to the actual graduation, which I never
- 37:06experienced. I did graduate, but I didn't go
- 37:10to the no ceremonies for now. I just, I don't know.
- 37:13I don't know a lot of people. Don't like people?
- 37:16It's fair they don't like you. There we go, it's mutual.
- 37:20A couple important things here. Now I do want to touch on the
- 37:22gripes that I had because I have to get it in here.
- 37:25You're not getting off that easy. 2 ones that really
- 37:29irritated. This is one of them.
- 37:30OK? Rob is meeting Joni's mom 2
- 37:34seconds before he's about to introduce himself.
- 37:37Knowing he needs to speak, he fills his mouth up with food.
- 37:42Why would you do that if I'm about to shake your hand?
- 37:46A stranger, someone I've never met, let alone your girlfriend's
- 37:50mom, which to me is a big deal, chooses to not just take a bite,
- 37:54shoves the whole thing and chokes.
- 37:57Almost just do the high, easy explanation.
- 37:59What? Self-destruction.
- 38:01Self destruction? That's it.
- 38:03OK. Yeah, just you.
- 38:05Want. Yourself to subconscious in
- 38:06there subconscious I'm going to put it myself in a position to
- 38:08fail. I accept that.
- 38:10Still irritates me. Yeah.
- 38:13I don't think you can explain the other one I have, though.
- 38:16OK. At the party that we talked
- 38:18about French and I want to say, Rob, have a pee together.
- 38:22Yeah, and buddies in the bushes and they stop midstream.
- 38:29You can't cut it. Off.
- 38:30You can't cut it off. I've cut it off.
- 38:32You cannot cut it off. Cut it off.
- 38:33No. Walked around the block and I
- 38:35went back. There was no.
- 38:36Yeah, I don't think so, buddy. Maybe you did.
- 38:39I would. I ever since I would need
- 38:41footage. But they're acting like they
- 38:43don't have to pee. That's right.
- 38:44Even if you cut it off, you've got you have to go.
- 38:46So sell that to me. So didn't like that it was made
- 38:50clear out. I wouldn't go that far.
- 38:52I mean, I dream a lot of the work isn't where it needs to be.
- 38:55You know me, I dream a lot about peeing.
- 38:56Yeah. So I think if you thought.
- 38:59Back to your live 25 years ago, you might have been able to cut
- 39:02it off, I think. I think there's some.
- 39:04I can cut it off now because the prostate, you know, it's barely
- 39:07coming out. There we go.
- 39:09If you sleep on it wrong, I can stop no problem.
- 39:12But these guys at this age and those are drinking a lot of that
- 39:15hoppy beer, that dark beer, apparently bad for your
- 39:18prostate. That's trying to.
- 39:19That's what we've heard, according to Dennis, anyway.
- 39:22Dennis. Lays it out.
- 39:23I learned a lot. Learned a lot watching this
- 39:25movie, but more importantly, this chunk, this graduation
- 39:29section is really Jack focused. Yeah, We have a great performer,
- 39:35great actor that I felt like I should have known.
- 39:37Spalding Gray. Yeah, he's great, actually.
- 39:40Like this scene. We've seen him before.
- 39:41In a movie you will not remember unfortunately, but beaches.
- 39:45OK. He played one of her husbands in
- 39:47beaches. I see no.
- 39:48He is fantastic, but this is one of the few scenes where I can
- 39:52say I thoroughly enjoyed. Yeah, I can do that now.
- 39:56Just because the movie sucks doesn't mean I can't pick a
- 39:58scene and appreciate it. Perfect.
- 40:00I don't know why he had that huge meal in front of just him.
- 40:04Was that to be funny? I don't.
- 40:07Know he has this giant. A full hen.
- 40:10And it's not a shareable, it's in.
- 40:12Front of him and he's the only one like eating Lucky he didn't
- 40:15really. I didn't really.
- 40:16Yeah, of. Course you don't do that in.
- 40:17Movies observation I made, but I love this conversation and I
- 40:22think it's interesting to watch it being this age now and I
- 40:27found myself like no, I'm on Spaulding side I get Ben.
- 40:31I do so it's not like Ben you're stupid.
- 40:33What are you talking about? Yes, I.
- 40:35Think history has proven that we don't listen?
- 40:39We don't listen, and I don't think we're.
- 40:41Supposed to like, honestly like, you know, easier if we did.
- 40:44As I've of. Course if that's what time does
- 40:46right, like 50 year old me would say something different to 20
- 40:50year old me. I think we established a few.
- 40:53Months ago that the only person we would listen to looper yes is
- 40:56our future self, yeah. That's it.
- 40:58But. And that's not impossible right
- 41:00yet. And so give it a chance.
- 41:02So this scene I think crystallizes that ultimately
- 41:05because my father, when I got my first job at 15, he said one of
- 41:10the early things he said was, you know, you have to spend
- 41:12every dollar like of your paycheck, but you did, right.
- 41:15And I would. Say yeah, OK.
- 41:17And then I would go and spend my money.
- 41:19It's the first time I had any money.
- 41:21I'm 1516, right? I've got friends, I got movies,
- 41:23I got toys, I got whatever. That's fine.
- 41:26And don't make a. Habit of it?
- 41:28Why not? Well, we know why.
- 41:29Sure, but you live. Your life, right?
- 41:31And so I live for 10 years in Vancouver and went bankrupt in
- 41:35the midst of that. But in that time, you had fun.
- 41:38I lived the best years of my life.
- 41:41I saw things, I did things, I flew, I traveled, I did right.
- 41:44That's worth it for you in the long.
- 41:45So what's the consequence? But under someone else's
- 41:48guidance, I would have never done any of those things.
- 41:51Moving to Vancouver was going to cost you too much money.
- 41:53Don't do it. Buying that bed was going to
- 41:55cost you too much money, don't buy it.
- 41:57So none of those things would ever happened.
- 41:59I would happily trade all that money for the experiences that I
- 42:03had. Or working at a video store for
- 42:0411 years wasn't financially prudent.
- 42:07But the best friends in the world that I had, the best
- 42:09memories I had in the world, the most fun I had in the world was
- 42:13for maybe. But you don't know.
- 42:15So how did you not done those things?
- 42:17You could have had better experiences.
- 42:18Don't know that, that's the thing.
- 42:19So only in hindsight. When someone tell me it doesn't
- 42:22happen in the beginning right? So Jack saying I want to do
- 42:25these things for as long as I can, I think is the right
- 42:28attitude to have, even if 10 years later, say fuck my kid, 20
- 42:34years from now I'm gonna tell them don't make the same
- 42:36mistakes I did. But I don't look at them like
- 42:38mistakes. I don't think he would either.
- 42:39I think what? Is overlooked by us at that age.
- 42:42Is it's OK to, let's say, take a year off?
- 42:46What's missing from our thought process is you can still have a
- 42:50plan and share that plan with your parents.
- 42:55More like a better laid out way. Sure, Like this is what I'm
- 42:59going to do. I know I'm going to have to get
- 43:01a job at some point, but I'm going to take a year off.
- 43:03I'm going to work part time. I'm going to gather my thoughts.
- 43:06I'm going to have a little bit of fun.
- 43:08Sure, I'm going to save a little bit of money.
- 43:10And they really come up with something that they might be
- 43:13able to understand versus just graduated 17 minutes ago.
- 43:17I don't know what I'm going to do.
- 43:18Well, you know, you really should that you've had two year
- 43:21program. You should have an idea what you
- 43:23want to do when you graduate. It's like you don't have to wait
- 43:25till you graduate to take the next step.
- 43:27Of course, if that next step is taken you off or five.
- 43:30Or 10 my case. Right back to school at 44, but
- 43:35I regret that. I'm glad I did it, but I would
- 43:37have rather have done it, you know, 30 years ago.
- 43:40Sure, but only based on your ladder experiences.
- 43:42Right. And that's the whole trick of
- 43:43it, I think. Yeah.
- 43:44So it's challenging because of what you know versus what they
- 43:47know. So, and you know you're.
- 43:48Not me. You don't know anything, old
- 43:49man. Right?
- 43:50Like that relationship is. It's always there.
- 43:52Yeah. They just don't want you to.
- 43:53Make the same mistakes, but they made the.
- 43:54Same mistakes that their parents told them not to me right?
- 43:57Like, and that's what I mean. Like it's literally like every
- 43:59generation makes the same quote UN quote mistakes, which is
- 44:02something. Where I actually don't.
- 44:03Think they're mistakes anymore? See my.
- 44:05Issue I think primarily, not necessarily with the movie, but
- 44:09is making mistakes is going to happen.
- 44:11You learn from the mistakes. It's the extra layer of
- 44:15difficulty we put on ourselves with the drinking culture.
- 44:20We don't need to poison our bodies to that extent.
- 44:23We don't need to have all those hangovers.
- 44:25We don't need to base our whole lives around the drink.
- 44:30Now, I literally did that, yes. But when I see it, I'm like,
- 44:34it's too much of the focus in this culture.
- 44:37So you're making mistakes that you may not be able to come back
- 44:40on, that you've done permanent damage, as it were.
- 44:43It's not like I was in a relationship.
- 44:45It didn't work out. I learned from it.
- 44:47I grew from it, but that's not always the case.
- 44:50Sure, I was, I was jaded. I my relationships were terrible
- 44:53for the next 20 years because of that woman.
- 44:56Sure, I didn't learn I was destroyed from that because what
- 45:01I let her do to me, whatever. So it doesn't always work out,
- 45:04but the odds. Are more people can manage their
- 45:08drinking. If you want to use that example
- 45:11then can't possibly. And so the difference is one
- 45:14goes all in, like slosh is all in, right?
- 45:18Now, whether slosh stays all in or not will be determined in
- 45:22time. Right.
- 45:23Because sometimes there is a revelation.
- 45:25Sometimes you wake up and you're 40 years old, and you go, I'm
- 45:27done with this. Yeah.
- 45:28Or you drink it all the way to the grave.
- 45:31But there is a balance in between.
- 45:33That is, I did that. I'm done with that, and I'm
- 45:37going to do something else. Hmm.
- 45:39And whether it's somebody else's influence or it's your own
- 45:42reckoning or it's a doctor that tells you, hey, if you don't
- 45:44quit smoking, you're going to die.
- 45:46Oh, I should probably stop then. Yeah.
- 45:48And that changes your entire outcome to come back to my.
- 45:51Original point about liking Spalding Gray is I like the fact
- 45:56that they just leave and the other thing is you want to get
- 46:00back to or not you love her. They are supportive of that.
- 46:04But if you still love her, go after her.
- 46:06Like don't do nothing. Yes, make a decision.
- 46:09Sure, don't go corporate necessarily right?
- 46:11There's other options there. So not to these guys, right?
- 46:14That's the you listener you don't like.
- 46:16It's tricky thing, I know, but I do appreciate the parents
- 46:19support of his relationship. We'll back you with what?
- 46:22But you have to make a decision for us to back.
- 46:25It can't be like nothing, can't tread water.
- 46:27I think that's the big take away is they don't want him just
- 46:31treading water and they just parents just wanting the best
- 46:33for their kids. Absolutely.
- 46:35Absolutely, but you must have appreciated.
- 46:36Him in the mirror. I love it in the.
- 46:38Bathroom totally, like like 25th hour.
- 46:40Yeah, just speaking like I was dying.
- 46:44No, I understand. I understand.
- 46:46That Dad, I'll get you cleaned yeah right.
- 46:48Like all that, There's two or three like funny moments.
- 46:51Yeah, it's not as. Comedic as I remembered it when
- 46:53my mind was like, oh, this is a funny Yeah college movie.
- 46:57And I found it more earnest than that.
- 47:00Poignant, even. Yeah.
- 47:01Ernest Goes to Art College would be a good movie.
- 47:03Exactly. Yeah, that's.
- 47:04The next one speaking. Of funny, this is where I
- 47:07actually wrote down. I want more scenes like this.
- 47:10OK, more more scenes on the number.
- 47:12I thought this. Might be your favorite because
- 47:14all the the television connection.
- 47:16Yeah, fun. Times #3 Leah Remini, yeah.
- 47:21This is her. Character in King of Queens.
- 47:23Oh really? Oh yeah, she's a pretty much a
- 47:25OneNote, but she's drunk. She does it really well.
- 47:27Sure she insults Doug all the time.
- 47:30The funny thing is Brendan Fraser's characters name is
- 47:33Doug. Oh, that's.
- 47:34Right. You just mentioned the Doug,
- 47:36Doug. So that was a happy accident,
- 47:40but she just should keep that shit to herself.
- 47:42Yeah. What are your?
- 47:43Thoughts on the PDA you into it? No, no, a little bit.
- 47:47It's fine. But when it becomes like showy,
- 47:51like come on, what he doing here, not on the three.
- 47:54Like you remember you're. Smoothies.
- 47:57Nobody liked the smoothies. Those were irritating.
- 47:59I remember you and you're like, Oh my God, when you two were
- 48:02together, it was sickening. No offence.
- 48:05I could say that now. Yeah.
- 48:06Yeah, it certainly makes me sick.
- 48:08How's your hindsight on this? But I mean at the end day
- 48:11whatever, do your thing but. Keep me out of it, keep it off.
- 48:15The 3 is really the key but I love.
- 48:17The bus driver. Yeah, he's great.
- 48:19He felt like an extra, like just put the hat on and he's the bus
- 48:22driver. He's probably the director's
- 48:24buddy, you know, or something, right?
- 48:25He was great. He might be able to get away
- 48:27with this on the two or the five, but not on the three.
- 48:30I just going out the window and no shirt now.
- 48:33Do you remember the song? Sort of it was.
- 48:36Pretty unique beats. I don't remember the words of
- 48:38it, but like, yeah, seems to fit well.
- 48:40The chorus. Shit.
- 48:41Fuck. Son of a gun.
- 48:43OHP, there we go. Well written.
- 48:44Well written. Must be done by Rich Wilkes.
- 48:46Yeah. Let's pivot, if you will.
- 48:57Yeah, more pivoting. You had to Dennis.
- 48:58Dennis and Luther. Luther was kind enough to invite
- 49:02Dennis to hobnob with the big wigs, and though Dennis had
- 49:07another plan, he decided to change the plan like 22 year
- 49:14olds are prone to do. Yeah, I suppose you had a plan
- 49:16as long as you have one. And now he's changing.
- 49:18It sure to go to this party and he brings along some riff raff
- 49:23yeah OK if I like this because it it solidifies jacket Warren
- 49:27Dennis earlier that Luther's just in it for your butt and I
- 49:31thought he was just giving. Him a hard time.
- 49:32That's it. So did.
- 49:32I didn't pick up on that at all, no.
- 49:34And the way that Luther is talking, right.
- 49:36And this is the theme of the movie, obviously, the time
- 49:39stoppage in the clock. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:42Is a very distinct metaphor. This conversation is that too,
- 49:47where Luther is talking about time.
- 49:50He's 48, getting older. He wants immortality and wants
- 49:53relevance and wants to still maintain his space in the world
- 49:56as I get older and young people, right?
- 49:57But it's also, I think it could be interpreted from the artistic
- 50:00perspective, right? Art lives on forever, so we all
- 50:03die. This podcast will live on in in
- 50:07some form after If I Died Tomorrow, You Died Tomorrow.
- 50:10All the episodes, the six years exist, and that's the power of
- 50:14art to me. The movies we watch, we watch
- 50:16Sunset Blvd. Nobody in that movie is alive,
- 50:18but that movie is still incredible 70 years later.
- 50:22And I think there's something important.
- 50:23So because Luther is in this artistic world and Dennis is a
- 50:26photographer and he's not a painter, no.
- 50:29And that's the trick, right? So obviously Luther's up his own
- 50:32ass, but fundamentally I think what he nice choice of.
- 50:35Words. What he's thinking, what he's
- 50:39talking. About, I find actually really
- 50:40important in general, but the idea of why old men often will
- 50:45date younger women or vice versa, I suppose.
- 50:48Or facelifts, Right. Everyone's chasing the youth,
- 50:50chasing being young, staying young, stopping time.
- 50:53And this is Luther's version of it.
- 50:55Yeah, it's reasonable. Yeah.
- 50:57It's played for laughs and it's obviously a little silly, but I
- 50:59think contextually it's really an important message that I find
- 51:02really resonant when I worked at the GAS.
- 51:04Station. I remember these two youngish,
- 51:07well, young to me. They probably when they're maybe
- 51:09mid 30s. I would have been 18 and they
- 51:13were a gay couple, which is at that time, late 90s, in a small
- 51:18town, wasn't prevalent, and they invited me back to their house.
- 51:24I didn't go, but I wonder what my life would have been like.
- 51:27You had a plan not to do that, sure, but around me of this
- 51:31scene and I felt that Luther even had a thing for Indie Ohgi.
- 51:38Think there's a little. OK, yeah, I could feel a little
- 51:40bit of. Chemistry there.
- 51:42Alright, so John Reese Davis. As an actor can just bring that
- 51:45chemistry in and out. I don't want to typecast him.
- 51:49But yeah, it's again, he didn't come on strong, though.
- 51:51Again, you almost had to like, spell it out for me, like, oh, I
- 51:54see what you're saying here. Yeah.
- 51:56Yeah. But like you said, we want to
- 51:58stay young, but obviously Dennis ultimately doesn't.
- 52:02Yeah. Calls him out on the.
- 52:02Scam. Yeah.
- 52:03And Jack, I don't know if it's. A scam but I mean.
- 52:08It's a bit of a scam to offer him, that's true.
- 52:11The job to stay with him on the basis of nothing other than
- 52:15yeah, that's a scam. I want you right.
- 52:16It's a bit of a scam lie. To you about your art.
- 52:19You would say that feels like a scam?
- 52:20I guess if. You put it that way.
- 52:23Text Jax pissed he cuts down the totem pole, which I love.
- 52:26Where did they get that? Chainsaw.
- 52:27That's what I want to know. When you were talking about your
- 52:30yeah, your nitpicks, if you will, I left that one.
- 52:32If you one of them, I left it out, but it just came to me
- 52:34again. Yeah, that's OK.
- 52:36He's gonna. Shed somewhere shred, No shred.
- 52:40He probably has a shed somewhere, have a a chainsaw in
- 52:46it. Yeah, so.
- 52:46Probably Philip. He just brought it handy just
- 52:49in, just in case you don't know, when you go to these hobnob
- 52:51parties when you're gonna need a chainsaw.
- 52:54Now, so far we've had Rob Russell and seemed to come to
- 52:58terms a little bit with the life and the choices with the moms
- 53:01and stuff like that. Hmm.
- 53:03Jack is still. Wrestling, right?
- 53:04He had this fight with his father.
- 53:06He's shredded with Mikey, he's been on the fence with Dina.
- 53:10Like he's obviously going through some stuff and he tries
- 53:13to have this quiet moment with Slosh on the beach on the.
- 53:20Beach, yes, absolutely. Got the beach party here and I
- 53:22think back. On the movie, I was saying to
- 53:24you, I thought this was funnier than I remembered.
- 53:26What that undercuts is. I actually think this is more
- 53:29sobering than I remembered, a little more depth than I think I
- 53:33had given credit for. Or the things that resonate with
- 53:36me, I think are those moments more so than slapsticky stuff,
- 53:39because. I listen to this.
- 53:40That's true. Sometimes when you watch these
- 53:42later, you get it totally with the writers trying to portray or
- 53:46at that age, like, I don't know what you don't know.
- 53:48It's like. The jokes or like the chicks put
- 53:49the soundtrack and kind of roll with it doesn't sink in.
- 53:51But for me, this scene, certainly based on this
- 53:54conversation, I think has even more weight because it's a
- 53:57direct. Repudiation.
- 53:59On some level of the things you were talking about, which Slosh
- 54:04is saying, this is a choice and just a poor one, but.
- 54:08Yeah, but he doesn't. Look at it that way.
- 54:10No he does not, and who knows what his life is going to look
- 54:13like in 20 years? The point is that people grow
- 54:15and change in a lot of different ways, like religious
- 54:18upbringings, right? Oh no, this is wrong.
- 54:20You're wound up tight and then you get a moment to break out of
- 54:24it and you live a deviant lifestyle.
- 54:27Yes. And then somewhere in the
- 54:29middle, come out and figure out what the middle part is.
- 54:31If you're lucky, if you're lucky.
- 54:33But that's life, Jackson. Like, look, you're following me.
- 54:35You, you, you look up to me like, yeah, I'm a failure.
- 54:39And he's not wrong. But at 22, you're.
- 54:40Not a failure, is my whole point.
- 54:42At 22, you're not anything really.
- 54:43Exactly. So who gives a shit?
- 54:45I fucked up my 20s, who cares? I lived the best life of my 30s
- 54:49or my 40 or whatever, right? To have decided that you're a
- 54:53fuck up at 20 is offensive to me because I don't know anything at
- 54:5720. Yeah, I think it's part of the.
- 54:58Problem with, again, our North American culture is we're doing
- 55:01all these things too early. Going to school, getting the
- 55:05job. We, I think we've learned a
- 55:06little bit. I think everyone's doing it a
- 55:08little bit later now, but we're not ready for any of that.
- 55:11We need to have these experiences without the pressure
- 55:14of graduating, without the pressure of getting the job.
- 55:17I'm sure your parents don't want you living at home till you're
- 55:1930 necessarily, but I think we do things way too early,
- 55:24especially for dudes, because we were dumb.
- 55:27Honestly, I hate to admit it. We mature a little bit later.
- 55:29Of course that's. Studies have shown exactly.
- 55:32I think it's pretty clear it's out there.
- 55:33Yeah. So I think that's part of the
- 55:34problem where all these issues come from something that's
- 55:37really unnatural for us to be doing.
- 55:39And that's where all the angst and confusion comes from.
- 55:41Like, we shouldn't even be dealing with this stuff yet.
- 55:44I need to have these experiences and figure things out.
- 55:47And I did like the scene. I don't necessarily agree with
- 55:49the reasoning necessarily of Slosh, he says.
- 55:54I'm. Happy there's No Fear and I did
- 55:57all of that and the world didn't end at 22 is to me exactly what
- 56:01people should be feeling. I want to live like my dogs head
- 56:03out the window what I don't. Like is the fear thing because
- 56:07live with No Fear now, and maybe it's just me.
- 56:10I'm just looking at myself as a point of reference.
- 56:13Sure, as I was that guy, I had No Fear.
- 56:16I drank and drove. I did a lot of stupid things
- 56:19those. Are stupid.
- 56:19That's stupid, but. I did it because I didn't have
- 56:21any fear. Have any consequences?
- 56:23Sure. And then I went through a long
- 56:25period of having nothing but fear.
- 56:28Sure. So we're pushing machine, was
- 56:30going to check it out. Going to use it the other day
- 56:33because I was feeling a little lightheaded.
- 56:35So I think he needs maybe to again, find something in the
- 56:40middle where it's like you have to have a little bit of fear
- 56:43because you have to look at the long run, yeah.
- 56:46Like don't. Not to the point where you're.
- 56:47Not having fun, but the consequences are consequences
- 56:51and it could affect your life down the road.
- 56:53Yeah, I look at some. Of that stuff you just talked
- 56:55about like it's too early, it's too early, it's too early to me.
- 56:57The world kicks your ass so early and the pressures of life
- 57:01get so prominent and prevalent so quickly that I'm of the
- 57:05belief of Rage Against that for as long as humanly possible.
- 57:10Because eventually you're going to get the job.
- 57:13Just you're going to, whether it's the great job or your
- 57:15shitty job, you're going to get the job.
- 57:17Well, depends how much fear. You have now slash is going to
- 57:21be. Retailer going to say, but there
- 57:23are people that make good money in retail.
- 57:25They've worked their way up and they do the things right.
- 57:27So I used to look at retail as an example.
- 57:29When I get my real job, I'll take it more seriously.
- 57:33I worked at retail for 12 years. Yeah, I mean, I shouldn't.
- 57:36Be making fun of it because I right 20 years right there's a.
- 57:38Part that says, well, if you should have been more
- 57:40responsible and you could have taken more, whatever, but I
- 57:43never looked at it as a real job.
- 57:45That line of thinking is just as like flawed, flawed and capping
- 57:52of ability and whatever than anything else anyway, just lost
- 57:55his speech and Jack saying there's no fucking fun anymore.
- 57:58That's reality that happens to all of us that I like.
- 58:01We have responsibility. We get married, we have kids, we
- 58:04have jobs, we work five days. The world changes.
- 58:08That's. Right, the world changes.
- 58:10All of that. So I thought this speech really
- 58:12crystallized some of the stuff and I thought it leaves really
- 58:15well to the next phase, yes. Because I think.
- 58:18What it does is it allows for things will be OK.
- 58:21It feels like it won't. It always feels like it won't
- 58:24because of so many of the pressures that we're talking
- 58:26about. So I'm not going to do that
- 58:27because the next day I was with somebody for many years and
- 58:32everything we talked about was later, later.
- 58:35Later, we're going to do this. Later we're going to do the
- 58:37vacation I'm going to. Live in anxiety.
- 58:39Today because I'm thinking about tomorrow.
- 58:41I can't spend this money. We shouldn't do this.
- 58:43I can't do that because later it'll be good.
- 58:45Later will be fine. Later we'll do it.
- 58:46Yeah. You're leading.
- 58:47Too much on the other side. It's finding that nice middle
- 58:50ground where you're not throwing away your future to have a
- 58:53little extra fun. Now you have to have, hate to
- 58:56say it, a plan. Yeah, but I do appreciate the
- 59:00sentiment. I still wouldn't use Dennis and
- 59:03Jack as someone to look up pillars there.
- 59:06Maybe of what? Not to do, but yeah, Jack
- 59:10living, just living life, yeah, but he's not happy, so he says
- 59:13I'm. Miserable.
- 59:14And this is. Where he has a little convo with
- 59:17man hands. Yes, and this just proves the
- 59:20bridge is burned. And what I found interesting is
- 59:25to tell a woman that you love them.
- 59:27Hmm. When you.
- 59:29Have the inability to listen to them.
- 59:32She's called you deranged. She has no interest of getting
- 59:36back. She's made that clear.
- 59:38But somehow and I've done it sure is we can still say I love
- 59:43you because you're not getting it and I just think as a young
- 59:48adult it's the the whole love thing.
- 59:50It's just, it's, it's a complicated feeling to have, but
- 59:55we just sometimes just don't get the hint where this is it we're.
- 59:58Done we're moving on Well I mean there's no coming back there
- 1:00:01Yeah, but that's it's a one way St. often right so I can still
- 1:00:05love right. He can still love this person
- 1:00:07even if she thinks he's deranged because it's it's it's her
- 1:00:10perspective on him. But why would you?
- 1:00:13Well, sure, but logically speaking, that's the.
- 1:00:15Logic. Spot would be.
- 1:00:16Like come on, what are we doing here?
- 1:00:19The love of my first girlfriend. We fought all the time.
- 1:00:21Make up sex sometimes, sure, yeah, but we're like, this is
- 1:00:26not compatible. But I loved her throughout all
- 1:00:30of that, you know? And even though she's saying
- 1:00:31shitty things and doing shitty things to me, and I'm saying and
- 1:00:34doing shitty things to her, at the end of the day, we're still
- 1:00:37in this. Yeah, but I love you.
- 1:00:39It's also a thing. I wrote a whole play about this,
- 1:00:41ultimately, where it is a thing that people will say to fill a
- 1:00:45gap in conversation or to convince you you're mad at me.
- 1:00:49But I love you. Thanks buddy.
- 1:00:51And. That isn't the solve that it is.
- 1:00:55I hope it is right. I'm saying it over and over.
- 1:00:57It represents a bunch of words like just can't say and maybe
- 1:01:00this will do a do the truth. So summarize right.
- 1:01:02But if the other person on other side is like, but I don't love
- 1:01:04you, which is what she says ultimately that it doesn't
- 1:01:06matter. You can love me all you want,
- 1:01:07but I'm out is really the fear. Of being alone.
- 1:01:10I think it's really yeah, these things out women as savior is
- 1:01:13what this movie and some others that kind of this type character
- 1:01:16type like who wants to be someone safety blanket like who
- 1:01:18wants that responsibility? What would you want to be a
- 1:01:20blanket at all? You know what I mean?
- 1:01:22Yeah, kind of cozy. Sure, sure.
- 1:01:25But the blank is right. In there, right, you don't have
- 1:01:27your own personality just. Exactly, but didn't take
- 1:01:30ultimately. That's right, It's OK.
- 1:01:32What does? Take finally is Mickey and
- 1:01:36Chelsea having Oh my, the heart to heart God.
- 1:01:40Now, have you ever asked somebody or told somebody that
- 1:01:42you like them the way you get to see them naked?
- 1:01:46No, But I. Get it?
- 1:01:48I didn't use those words. That's a good line.
- 1:01:50I thought was a really good. Now, like I said, Vinny Deramus
- 1:01:54is an absolutely terrible actor. I don't mean any disrespect.
- 1:01:57You could be a incredibly good person, a little disrespectful.
- 1:02:00I'm not a good actor either. I was in a movie fill my scene
- 1:02:03got cut. Yeah, I know what it's like.
- 1:02:05I'm a bad actor too. Yeah, again, probably a great
- 1:02:08guy. But this scene, I hate it.
- 1:02:11The fact that Chelsea even wants to be with him makes absolutely
- 1:02:14no sense. And if you hear a noise outside,
- 1:02:20that's fine, ignore it. 5 minutes I just.
- 1:02:22Need 5 minutes? Don't pick the.
- 1:02:24Move, don't pick up the. Phone don't go outside once the
- 1:02:29woman says I. Like you too.
- 1:02:31It's over. You're in.
- 1:02:33Or it. Yeah.
- 1:02:33You should be in exactly you don't go out, do the kiss.
- 1:02:37Do some things you'll. Probably get to 2nd.
- 1:02:40Base if not further. And he's such a loser.
- 1:02:44Yeah, I agree. I don't really like the scene
- 1:02:45either, except for that, but the idea that comes out of that, or
- 1:02:50at least I guess what they're alerted do, is a bunch of shit
- 1:02:52breaking. So we get Dennis has inability
- 1:02:55to talk about Nona. Ohhhhh.
- 1:02:57Yeah. And and this issue with this mug
- 1:02:59and this is my special thing and so forth.
- 1:03:01Raised them. Yeah.
- 1:03:02Yeah, yeah. And he smashes it.
- 1:03:04And in earlier, Jack talks about Kamu and the idea that the best
- 1:03:11thing that could have happened, you alluded to it earlier, is
- 1:03:13that, yeah, you're the peak of love and everything is
- 1:03:16wonderful. And she dies.
- 1:03:18Yeah. Cause then it never rots.
- 1:03:20It never goes bad, never breaks up with you.
- 1:03:21Never breaks your heart. That's right.
- 1:03:23It's a different sadness, sure, but yeah, but.
- 1:03:26It's manageable in time and whatever else, but it's
- 1:03:28crystallized. And he then takes that idea and
- 1:03:34commits it to Rancho itself, and he calls it preservation through
- 1:03:38destruction. Yeah, Dennis starts it off by
- 1:03:42smashing this mug, which was what we.
- 1:03:44Thought important to him. I do appreciate his analogy
- 1:03:47about every time you use this mug, it's like you're kissing my
- 1:03:51Nona. Yeah.
- 1:03:52I get it. Sure this just cause people
- 1:03:54known as. Sicko by issue with.
- 1:03:56This whole brand preservation through destruction, I'm not on
- 1:04:00board with it might work for some people.
- 1:04:02But if once you've explained this importance of the mug and
- 1:04:07the why, yeah, you can still keep the mug.
- 1:04:10Now they know now that we respect it and not use it or
- 1:04:14don't use it at all to drink. Keep it up in your room and you
- 1:04:18can still have it as a memory of Nona.
- 1:04:21You don't have to break it. I get the sediment.
- 1:04:24We're talking about a 47 year old watching movie about 22 year
- 1:04:27olds. You're going to bring some of
- 1:04:28that in? Had I watched this, maybe at 22.
- 1:04:31Yeah. Break that mug.
- 1:04:32Yeah. Maybe it'll be a little.
- 1:04:34Bit different, sure, but I don't like destruction.
- 1:04:37I don't. I'm a creator.
- 1:04:39I'm an architect, right? Yes, that's right.
- 1:04:42That's true. Yeah, I mean, that's totally
- 1:04:44fair. I think, you know, like we
- 1:04:46experience with these movies, right?
- 1:04:47This one lived with me for 30 years.
- 1:04:49So yeah, this is different actually.
- 1:04:51I love the idea behind this. Not only communicated well, the
- 1:04:56explanation that the sort of definition that this thing will
- 1:04:59never go bad, it'll never go sour.
- 1:05:01It'll be remembered as it is in our brains a little bit earlier.
- 1:05:04The dart falls out of the clock to symbolize again, in case you
- 1:05:07didn't get the metaphor at the beginning that the time does go
- 1:05:11on whether you want to let it or not.
- 1:05:13And this goes into self sabotage stuff we talked about earlier
- 1:05:15with Rob, right? Like if you break it up, if
- 1:05:18while it's still good, then it can just stay as a good memory.
- 1:05:22Whereas you meet the mom, she's a monster.
- 1:05:25You, you know, get married for 10 years and it turns out sour,
- 1:05:28right? It's like, well, fuck that
- 1:05:30bitch. I can't look at those photos
- 1:05:31anymore because they're tainted because she's ruined my life, or
- 1:05:35she took my kid, or she took my money.
- 1:05:38That, I thought, is an interesting thing.
- 1:05:42Rancho exists, but do you want to drive past your old apartment
- 1:05:45and see that it's been fully renovated and doesn't look
- 1:05:47anything like your old house? Or, you know, my old house was
- 1:05:50sold and I was like, well, that's not my house.
- 1:05:53Yeah, you'd rather have just. Burn it to the ground.
- 1:05:55No else can live. In it, but the principle is all
- 1:05:58the memories now are tainted a little bit with what this new
- 1:06:02version of what my house was or is.
- 1:06:04You're sharing it. With strangers exactly, and I
- 1:06:06didn't need to burn. It to the ground, but in
- 1:06:08principle, I like that this movie, at least the thematic
- 1:06:12element is. Maybe I could.
- 1:06:14And if not literally, at least figuratively.
- 1:06:18Yeah, Beta. Metaphorically destroy it.
- 1:06:21Yeah, that I can get. That never gets anywhere else.
- 1:06:23I get that. I just don't want to clean up
- 1:06:24the mess. You don't have to.
- 1:06:25They don't have to. They're out.
- 1:06:26Maybe you lose your damage deposit, but you know it
- 1:06:29already. I'm saying I.
- 1:06:31Love it. I think it's.
- 1:06:32Great. I think it's a good moment for
- 1:06:33everybody. Kind of let off the steam.
- 1:06:34Obviously the movie, it helps propel out of everybody out of
- 1:06:37there. You can't stay now even if you
- 1:06:38wanted to, which is another, another reason to destroy right
- 1:06:41now by not metaphorically bringing it down, but actually
- 1:06:45physically tearing it down. There is no more Rancho.
- 1:06:48There is nowhere else to go. You have to leave.
- 1:06:51Maybe. That's what I should have done
- 1:06:52and maybe that's why I have these lingering memories because
- 1:06:55I didn't burned down that duplex.
- 1:06:58There you go, and. Go to prison.
- 1:06:59For arson, yeah. Missed.
- 1:07:01Opportunity. Yeah.
- 1:07:02Yeah, I left. The wounds open, if you will.
- 1:07:05Sure. So that to me, I thought it's a
- 1:07:06great way to end the movie. I mean, we do get goodbyes
- 1:07:08afterwards. Oh, you got to test the big
- 1:07:10things up. Climaxes it were.
- 1:07:12Everyone has their moments to move on.
- 1:07:13Yeah, we see Rob hanging out with Joni in the car.
- 1:07:18Yeah, I think he makes the. Right.
- 1:07:19Call. Joni did come around.
- 1:07:21If you remember, she apologized for that thing.
- 1:07:23So yeah, I think there's, you know, give it a go.
- 1:07:27Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:07:28Sort of a shit together seems to seem right.
- 1:07:30Probably divorced and miserable now.
- 1:07:32Oh yeah, 100. Percent took him for everything,
- 1:07:34yeah. Mickey and Chelsea together, we
- 1:07:37hear that. I hate that.
- 1:07:40Like, come on, what are we doing here?
- 1:07:42Just there? That's the worst.
- 1:07:44Slosh keeps the sign from Rancho.
- 1:07:46But moves in down the road he'd been propositioned earlier.
- 1:07:48That reminds me the end of old school.
- 1:07:50Oh yes, it's real. Ferrell becomes the DJ.
- 1:07:53Of. The school and he's like older
- 1:07:55and, you know, really shouldn't be there.
- 1:07:56But yeah, you know, I like it. I don't like Godfather.
- 1:07:59Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:08:00So I don't. Mind that for Slosh figures
- 1:08:02things out. Yeah, he's got the game.
- 1:08:03He's going to be, he's going to be a if you can.
- 1:08:06Motivate himself enough to follow through with that.
- 1:08:08I think it's all about the follow through and he can make
- 1:08:10something of himself. Absolutely, yeah.
- 1:08:12And we got a last little bit of voice over.
- 1:08:15And he says the hardest part about getting older is you don't
- 1:08:18fling yourself into love and friendships as easily.
- 1:08:21But I think if we didn't necessarily.
- 1:08:23Put ourselves in certain predicaments in our 20s like
- 1:08:26this that maybe it would have been easier to make friends
- 1:08:31later. But we have these memories of
- 1:08:33like, oh, I was hurt, they had this bad friendship, this
- 1:08:37relationship went sour. And those memories, like, I
- 1:08:40don't want to go through that again.
- 1:08:42Therefore, you may have learned something, but it also has
- 1:08:46hindered maybe future friendships.
- 1:08:48Like I haven't been a friend with somebody because, oh, I
- 1:08:50don't want to get too close because this is what happened.
- 1:08:53Sure, this person years ago. So it can go either way is what
- 1:08:56I'm saying. That might be why it's a little
- 1:08:58more difficult because of the pain you put yourself through in
- 1:09:01your early 20s. Sure, with the.
- 1:09:03Alcohol. As the driving force, right,
- 1:09:08which could be for some people, even for myself anyways, the
- 1:09:12what elevated these bad experiences, right, is what made
- 1:09:15these things worse. Had I not done that, then maybe
- 1:09:17I would have been able to come out a little bit, you know,
- 1:09:20cleaner. That's fair, I mean.
- 1:09:21I lived a pretty chaste life in that respect.
- 1:09:23Again, I only drank for five years, and it wasn't that much
- 1:09:26in that time. He didn't have what it took.
- 1:09:28Couldn't keep it up. But it's just getting older.
- 1:09:32Your social circles just, you know, Yeah, I mean.
- 1:09:34I think there's natural attrition, natural aggression,
- 1:09:38right? Not, not.
- 1:09:39Quite so willing to jump into things which I think is
- 1:09:41interesting. And he gets the last.
- 1:09:44Moment as it. Were angst for the memories
- 1:09:46angst, I thought you. Misspelled.
- 1:09:47Thanks. Because he's writing backwards.
- 1:09:49That's not easy to do. It's impressive.
- 1:09:50I've tried it. Yeah.
- 1:09:51Yeah. And man hands.
- 1:09:52Like, OK, man. It's sorry I'm.
- 1:09:55Glad he got over. It's kind of get a moment.
- 1:09:57Jack Theory has put it to bed now and he will be better for it
- 1:10:01later. Absolutely for sure.
- 1:10:02And acetone continues to play as he drives off.
- 1:10:05Now, you obviously didn't like this movie, but have I maybe
- 1:10:10sufficiently explained why I do? Already knew why you did, Megan
- 1:10:16Ward, you have a hard time letting go.
- 1:10:19So check the clocks here, buddy. They're all ticking.
- 1:10:21OK, They're all ticking. Yeah.
- 1:10:23No, I was curious to. See the fact that this movie
- 1:10:27isn't generally well received. It's like from a production
- 1:10:32standpoint it's about 5 losers. There's no hero.
- 1:10:35There's a lot of elements that are missing for the average Joe,
- 1:10:39maybe to get into it. I'm thinking, well, you.
- 1:10:42Have a connection to this movie as a young Phil.
- 1:10:45So I was curious to see is it strong enough still to keep on
- 1:10:50your shelf? Like do you like do you 100%?
- 1:10:53There you go. 100% no doubt loved watching it.
- 1:10:57It's not funny as I thought it was or remembered it being, but
- 1:11:00all the points still hit for me. I loved it and that's what I.
- 1:11:02Pretty much expected of you, unfortunately.
- 1:11:05Just kidding, what are your thoughts?
- 1:11:08Well, for me like you know, I need an in and there wasn't that
- 1:11:13secure connection. There's more of a Wi-Fi.
- 1:11:18You're not hardwired. Exactly like I get a little bit
- 1:11:21of you. I get a little bit of you.
- 1:11:24I don't think not enjoying the movie is a reflection of the
- 1:11:27movie being bad. I don't think it's bad.
- 1:11:30I think it triggers certain memories for me.
- 1:11:34Like I don't really want to experience.
- 1:11:36I don't want. To be.
- 1:11:36Reminded of all these mistakes I made at that age and have so
- 1:11:40much alcohol being displayed. I'm like, man, I wish I hadn't
- 1:11:44gotten into that so. There was a lot of remorse in
- 1:11:47different ways than like days of wine and roses and the lost
- 1:11:49weekend. Because you like those.
- 1:11:51I like those in different ways. And this is more repellent to
- 1:11:54you? That's kind of interesting.
- 1:11:55Just curiosity maybe? It's the Jack Lemmon.
- 1:11:57I don't know, Modern maybe? Or the timeline because 95 you
- 1:12:00were. It could be that.
- 1:12:02Right. So maybe there's some of.
- 1:12:03That I think how would the. Drinking part how it's
- 1:12:04illustrated on it there were Dave day of wine and roses was
- 1:12:08more about the addiction sure it's about the.
- 1:12:10Consequences. This is not really about that
- 1:12:13had a different cord. And the fact I just didn't like
- 1:12:16Mickey, Yeah, we got it drove me nuts.
- 1:12:20However, I watched it three times.
- 1:12:22Yeah. And I disliked it less and less.
- 1:12:27I understood more why Phil likes this and why he's likely going
- 1:12:31to keep it on his shelf and why this movie exists.
- 1:12:34And I did appreciate the overall messaging of it.
- 1:12:38It just made me question why in certain cultures we do certain
- 1:12:41things to make our lives so much more difficult.
- 1:12:43And it just got to irritated me a little bit, but struck A
- 1:12:47chord. But again, now half, I mean, I
- 1:12:51can do that and it's your birthday weekend.
- 1:12:53That's right. So give me a little credit, but.
- 1:12:56That's great. Well, I'm sorry I didn't make
- 1:12:57your shelf, but it's happily stays on mine.
- 1:12:59Tell us what's coming off your shelf next week.
- 1:13:01Well, tease, I don't know. Well, next week, Phil, we are
- 1:13:05going to a place where it's most likely very hard to find alcohol
- 1:13:09actually and to find a lot of commodities that you might need.
- 1:13:13So it's going to be pretty dry. We'll say it's very dry.
- 1:13:17OK, I think you'll like it. I hope so, probably won't
- 1:13:21though. History has told us.
- 1:13:23We'll find out. Thanks.
