- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number two three,
- 0:20Speaker 1: and today in the show, we're joined again by Dan
- 0:22Speaker 1: in Fault to take a deeper than ever look into
- 0:24Speaker 1: his hunting Beast style strategies and philosophies for public land
- 0:29Speaker 1: and heavily pressured white tail bucks. All right, welcome to
- 0:48Speaker 1: the Wire to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And today on the show, we have Dan in Fault
- 0:54Speaker 1: back with us on the podcast for the first time
- 0:57Speaker 1: since two thousand fourteen. And if you're not familiar with Dan,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I hope this helps change that because Dan is one
- 1:03Speaker 1: of the I think it's fair to say he is
- 1:05Speaker 1: one of the most revered and respected serious d I
- 1:08Speaker 1: Y deer hunters out there, and he's become well known
- 1:11Speaker 1: because of this forum he started called The Hunting Beast,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and then many different DVDs, books, and other resources that
- 1:18Speaker 1: he's put out over over past years to help people
- 1:21Speaker 1: learn about his aggressive and mobile style of deer hunting
- 1:25Speaker 1: that seems to work particularly well for people that are
- 1:27Speaker 1: hunting public land or heavily pressure private lands. And you know,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Dan was actually one of our very first guests on
- 1:34Speaker 1: the show. I think he was on our very third episode,
- 1:37Speaker 1: definitely one of our most popular guests, So I knew
- 1:39Speaker 1: that we had to get him back on eventually. But
- 1:41Speaker 1: over the course of this four year period since then,
- 1:45Speaker 1: you know, Dan has been featured in a lot of
- 1:46Speaker 1: different outlets, websites, YouTube channels, podcasts, let alone his own
- 1:51Speaker 1: website and all the different things that he's doing there.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So my thing was that if if we're gonna have
- 1:55Speaker 1: Dan back on again, we just had to find a
- 1:58Speaker 1: way to make sure it wasn't, you know, just another
- 2:00Speaker 1: rehash of what's already been done on all these other
- 2:02Speaker 1: podcasts and shows out there that have popped up since
- 2:05Speaker 1: we first started doing this. So here's my idea. To
- 2:09Speaker 1: get the next level conversation with Dan. I decided to
- 2:13Speaker 1: bring on a couple of guest co hosts who could
- 2:15Speaker 1: dive deeper with Dan than even I could. These two
- 2:19Speaker 1: guys have studied under Dan for years and years. They've
- 2:22Speaker 1: been longtime members of his Hunting Beast forum. They understand
- 2:26Speaker 1: Dan's hunting philosophy, is probably better than most anyone else.
- 2:29Speaker 1: They've tested his ideas for themselves in the field, and
- 2:32Speaker 1: they're now some of the very most successful d I
- 2:35Speaker 1: Y deer hunters out there themselves too. I wanted these
- 2:38Speaker 1: guys to ask the questions to Dan that they've always
- 2:41Speaker 1: wanted answered. So here to do that with me are
- 2:44Speaker 1: two of my good buddies and past guests on the
- 2:47Speaker 1: podcast as well, Andy May and Joe Elsinger. And that's
- 2:51Speaker 1: the game plan. Joe, Andy and myself are going to
- 2:54Speaker 1: ask all sorts of questions of Dan in an attempt
- 2:58Speaker 1: to you know, anything, and tempt to explore ideas and
- 3:01Speaker 1: maybe lessons learns and tactics that Dan hasn't shared as
- 3:05Speaker 1: much about in the past. So the format does end
- 3:08Speaker 1: up being a little bit more like a Q and
- 3:09Speaker 1: A and not as much of a cohesive examination of
- 3:12Speaker 1: a single topic like we sometimes do. So kind of
- 3:15Speaker 1: all over the place, but I think you'll find we
- 3:17Speaker 1: cover some really interesting things that should help a lot
- 3:19Speaker 1: of you out. And I should note you know, if
- 3:21Speaker 1: you haven't heard our first two episodes with Dan, you
- 3:24Speaker 1: probably should go back and listen to those first, so
- 3:27Speaker 1: you kind of have the proper foundation to understand what
- 3:29Speaker 1: we cover today because we don't cover a lot of
- 3:31Speaker 1: the basic elements of Dan's hunting tactics or his his
- 3:35Speaker 1: kind of style of hunting. We don't cover much of that,
- 3:37Speaker 1: So you'll want to listen to those first episodes to
- 3:39Speaker 1: get that background necessary and then come back to this
- 3:42Speaker 1: one to kind of cover that that next level stuff.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I think even even if you did listen to those
- 3:48Speaker 1: first couple episodes way back in two thousand and fourteen,
- 3:50Speaker 1: you might even still want to review the now just
- 3:52Speaker 1: what's fresh in your mind. So with that being the case,
- 3:56Speaker 1: I do think you're all going to come away from
- 3:57Speaker 1: this one with a lot of great new ideas. I'm
- 3:59Speaker 1: exed I for you to listen to it. I'm excited
- 4:01Speaker 1: to listen to it again myself and try to think
- 4:03Speaker 1: through some of these things and how they might be
- 4:05Speaker 1: applied to my own hunting season. So that's what we
- 4:07Speaker 1: have in store for you today. But before we get
- 4:09Speaker 1: to the main event, we do need to pause briefly
- 4:12Speaker 1: to thank our partners at Onyx for the support of
- 4:15Speaker 1: this podcast. And you know, Onyx is the maker of
- 4:17Speaker 1: the Onyx Hunt app which is, at least from what
- 4:20Speaker 1: I've seen the most useful digital mapping app out there
- 4:23Speaker 1: for hunters, and it includes all of your typical GPS
- 4:26Speaker 1: app type features. It has all sorts of different types
- 4:28Speaker 1: of layers that are useful to a deer hunter, like
- 4:31Speaker 1: satellite imagery, topo lines, property borders, public land information. But
- 4:37Speaker 1: what I've found particularly useful with the app just recently
- 4:39Speaker 1: is that it also includes some information that can help
- 4:41Speaker 1: you out if you are hiking or camping. You know,
- 4:45Speaker 1: I've been out here in Montana for the last couple
- 4:47Speaker 1: of weeks and I've actually been using my onyx app
- 4:49Speaker 1: to show me where National forest borders are, which helps
- 4:52Speaker 1: me determine where I can pull off and camp for free.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And the app also shows many different hiking trails and
- 4:58Speaker 1: trail heads and even designated campgrounds. So this has been
- 5:01Speaker 1: really helpful for me as we've been driving out in
- 5:03Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere, Montana and trying to figure out
- 5:05Speaker 1: where we're gonna stay at night, where we're gonna head to,
- 5:08Speaker 1: what types of places you want to stay at. It's
- 5:10Speaker 1: been very handy for that, and of course I think
- 5:12Speaker 1: this would be very useful for anyone planning a back
- 5:14Speaker 1: country elk or mule deer hunt too. So as always,
- 5:18Speaker 1: I'm finding on x to be a great tool, and
- 5:19Speaker 1: if you'd like to learn more about it yourself, you
- 5:22Speaker 1: can visit onyx maps dot com or search for onyx
- 5:25Speaker 1: that's O n X on your phone's app store. And
- 5:29Speaker 1: now let's get to the show with Joe, Andy and Dan.
- 5:35Speaker 1: All Right, I've now have with me three more folks
- 5:39Speaker 1: I've got as my co host join me today, Joel
- 5:42Speaker 1: Eli Singer and Andy May. And joining us as our
- 5:45Speaker 1: actual guest though, is Dan in Fall. So welcome back
- 5:49Speaker 1: to the show. Dan. It's been a little while. Yeah,
- 5:53Speaker 1: thanks for having me. Yeah, I think it was way
- 5:55Speaker 1: back in two thousand fourteen when we actually were able
- 5:58Speaker 1: to do this last that's kind of time flies. I
- 6:01Speaker 1: can't believe it's been that long, but we had you
- 6:02Speaker 1: on twice and those are great episodes. Um, But since then,
- 6:07Speaker 1: I think a lot has changed, most notably at least
- 6:10Speaker 1: from your end. I think, you know, I think more
- 6:13Speaker 1: and more people have found out about what you're doing
- 6:15Speaker 1: in your style of hunting, whether it be just from
- 6:18Speaker 1: engaging with your own website and your forum and your
- 6:20Speaker 1: podcasts and videos, or from the other appearances you've made
- 6:24Speaker 1: on gosh, the the two thousand other podcasts that have
- 6:27Speaker 1: popped up now across the world. So you've been you've
- 6:30Speaker 1: been kind of sharing your your methodology all over the place.
- 6:33Speaker 1: A lot of people are interested and excited about it.
- 6:36Speaker 1: So so when I got to thinking, I was like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I want to have Dan back on the show, but
- 6:39Speaker 1: how do we do something that's different? How do we
- 6:41Speaker 1: do something that's kind of next level? And Um, the
- 6:44Speaker 1: idea I had was to bring Joe and Andy on
- 6:47Speaker 1: as co host because I think it's fair to say, um,
- 6:51Speaker 1: and you guys jump in if you if you want
- 6:52Speaker 1: to correct me here, but I think I would look
- 6:54Speaker 1: at them as kind of proteges of yours and that
- 6:56Speaker 1: they've they've been following what we've been doing on the
- 6:58Speaker 1: Hunting Beast. They've been longtime members your forum and some
- 7:01Speaker 1: of the very most successful guys on there, and now
- 7:03Speaker 1: they've kind of gone out and they've been able to
- 7:05Speaker 1: develop their own styles and they've they've been sharing that
- 7:08Speaker 1: with the world too. So I think they've got an
- 7:10Speaker 1: interesting perspective as they've learned a ton of from you
- 7:12Speaker 1: but then grown in their own way. UM. So my
- 7:16Speaker 1: hope here is that in addition to my own curiosities,
- 7:18Speaker 1: I think these two guys are gonna have a lot
- 7:20Speaker 1: of questions for you that are going to be maybe
- 7:22Speaker 1: even more in depth or more interesting than anything I have,
- 7:26Speaker 1: since they're head and shoulders above me, even when it
- 7:29Speaker 1: comes to understanding what you do and or how to
- 7:31Speaker 1: apply that kind of stuff out there um in the field.
- 7:34Speaker 1: So that's kind of my my idea for this this chat.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And I guess to start though, Dan, if you're if
- 7:40Speaker 1: you're up for this, most people know what you're up to.
- 7:44Speaker 1: But if there's someone new listening right now, if we
- 7:46Speaker 1: just want to establish like a little bit of of
- 7:48Speaker 1: a foundation, even if someone came up to you and
- 7:51Speaker 1: was just like, you know, Dan, what is beast style hunting?
- 7:54Speaker 1: And a lot of people call it this now, they
- 7:56Speaker 1: call it beast style hunting. If you had to give
- 7:58Speaker 1: them like a cliff notes answer to explain, like your
- 8:01Speaker 1: general style of hunting, how would you how would you
- 8:03Speaker 1: do that? Dan Um? Probably I would say it's, uh,
- 8:08Speaker 1: it's a style of getting really close to the book
- 8:11Speaker 1: betting and really understanding book betting and uh getting the
- 8:15Speaker 1: worth of deer moving daylight and so so then if
- 8:19Speaker 1: that's the case of its betting focused. How is your
- 8:22Speaker 1: hunting style different now than it was when we talked
- 8:26Speaker 1: back then? Have have have you evolved at all or
- 8:28Speaker 1: has your style changed at all in the last three
- 8:31Speaker 1: or four years? Not much. Um, I've been involved in
- 8:37Speaker 1: my whole life, so I think that the last few
- 8:41Speaker 1: years have been pretty flatlined as far as development and
- 8:45Speaker 1: real quick I have a quick question on that. How
- 8:48Speaker 1: about your focus as a hunter, because I feel like
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think, I mean, no, you might know what you're where,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you're going there, but I feel like you're focused maybe
- 8:56Speaker 1: has changed and if you yeah, that that is correct. Um,
- 9:01Speaker 1: Joe makes a good point there. Um, I think my
- 9:05Speaker 1: focus is uh, it's really changed. And uh, I'm not
- 9:09Speaker 1: aggressive as a hunter and I don't care as much
- 9:12Speaker 1: anymore if I'm successful, and I'm worry more about others
- 9:15Speaker 1: than I do myself. I think when I was younger,
- 9:18Speaker 1: that drive and stuff is what put a lot of
- 9:19Speaker 1: those giant bucks on my wall. And you know what
- 9:21Speaker 1: they hate you lose a little bit of that drive. Uh.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And I kill a lot more bucks now out of knowledge.
- 9:28Speaker 1: When I was younger, I think I kill a lot
- 9:29Speaker 1: of them out of just sheer determination, What will this
- 9:32Speaker 1: dan when it comes to those that's that sheer determination everything?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Have you seen the outside world change at all? Enforced
- 9:42Speaker 1: you change? And I guess something I feel like has
- 9:44Speaker 1: been happening is with the kind the word out about
- 9:49Speaker 1: how you hunt and other public land and kind of
- 9:51Speaker 1: heavily pressured area hunters out there. There's a lot of
- 9:53Speaker 1: people talking about this kind of stuff. Now, I feel
- 9:55Speaker 1: like more and more guys are getting the confidence to
- 9:57Speaker 1: go and hunt public places and go in these tough
- 10:00Speaker 1: hunt places and dive in there and do this kind
- 10:02Speaker 1: of stuff. Have you seen like increased pressure? Like are
- 10:05Speaker 1: there more people trying to do the same things that
- 10:07Speaker 1: you've been doing? Is that making things more difficult for you? Yeah,
- 10:10Speaker 1: it's it's really been a huge change the last couple
- 10:13Speaker 1: of years. It's really starting to grow rapidly. And uh
- 10:16Speaker 1: it's interesting, you know. Um, I'm seeing guys that you know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: you used to say you never go in your betting
- 10:23Speaker 1: changing your whole tune now and uh a lot of
- 10:26Speaker 1: mainstream guys adapting the same philosophies. Um, so I think
- 10:30Speaker 1: it is growing, um really big. Um. It gets kind
- 10:35Speaker 1: of hard for me because um, I like to talk
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know, like more like with the Joe's and Andy's
- 10:42Speaker 1: out there who are really hardcore and uh and uh
- 10:46Speaker 1: I can relate with and and but I got a
- 10:48Speaker 1: lot of new new people coming to me all the time,
- 10:50Speaker 1: asking the same questions over and over and over again.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I find the bad dad. We all start there, you know.
- 11:01Speaker 1: That's the thing, and and one of the one of
- 11:03Speaker 1: many things I admire about you, Dan, and I for
- 11:06Speaker 1: the record, you've taught me, you know, on the East
- 11:09Speaker 1: in general has taught me more about hunting than any
- 11:12Speaker 1: other one entity in my entire lifetime. You know, you're
- 11:18Speaker 1: willing to answer those questions begin and again because we
- 11:21Speaker 1: all start there. And you know, you know, it's like
- 11:23Speaker 1: a you know, answering a three year old when it
- 11:26Speaker 1: comes to how to you know, put on their codes
- 11:28Speaker 1: in the morning. But we all start there, and you
- 11:31Speaker 1: remember that it's really easy to become almost arrogant. Either's
- 11:36Speaker 1: examples out there, you know, people's ignoring others. Um and
- 11:40Speaker 1: you're always going to teach. So I don't know one
- 11:43Speaker 1: question I had for you regarding that, where do you
- 11:45Speaker 1: Where did that come from? I guess you know, I, um,
- 11:48Speaker 1: where does that desire to you? Know, to help others out,
- 11:53Speaker 1: even even to your detriment. You know, we've talked about
- 11:56Speaker 1: that where you know, you know you're getting more pressure
- 12:01Speaker 1: in areas that you hunt. I know I'm feeling it too, um,
- 12:07Speaker 1: but we still do it, you know, because it's in
- 12:09Speaker 1: the big picture that's a good thing. I guess. You know.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Even when I was younger, I think I worried more
- 12:15Speaker 1: about that stuff, and you know, it gives making an
- 12:18Speaker 1: impact on me. I had a, um two seasons ago,
- 12:22Speaker 1: I had a really large non typical alis hunting and
- 12:24Speaker 1: some people that follow me figured out my where I
- 12:28Speaker 1: was hunting that deer and really moved in and took
- 12:31Speaker 1: over and they ended up killing it. And uh, that
- 12:34Speaker 1: stuff happens. But I don't really mind that much anymore. Um.
- 12:39Speaker 1: But what I really like to do is is I
- 12:41Speaker 1: hate the direction that the hunting industry is going. And
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's almost going to like a you've gotta have certain
- 12:48Speaker 1: products and you have to be uh like a deer
- 12:51Speaker 1: farmer type guy. And the people out there don't have
- 12:56Speaker 1: the money or the the ability to get on good
- 13:00Speaker 1: private land and hunt away. All these other people are
- 13:02Speaker 1: hunting and they've just kind of lost souls, And I
- 13:05Speaker 1: think what I'd like to see is the woodsmanship. I
- 13:08Speaker 1: saw when I was young that the old hunters had
- 13:11Speaker 1: come back, and uh, it's almost a lost art. And
- 13:16Speaker 1: I think kind of, you know, you're talking about be style.
- 13:18Speaker 1: I think a lot of that is the woodsmanship, learning
- 13:20Speaker 1: what dear do, how they behave and stuff, rather than
- 13:23Speaker 1: just um, you know, planting a food plot or putting
- 13:26Speaker 1: on a pile of food. Not that there's anything wrong
- 13:29Speaker 1: with that, just I'd like to see people, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 1: at least adapt and understand the skills of the woods
- 13:34Speaker 1: like they used to. Yeah, hey, Dan, this is the
- 13:37Speaker 1: indie that kind of sparks a question that I had. Uh,
- 13:41Speaker 1: kind of piggyback off that. But you think that kind
- 13:45Speaker 1: of that focus on big buck or the big buck
- 13:47Speaker 1: craze that kind of seems to be compounding itself and
- 13:51Speaker 1: getting you know, such an emphasis on that. Do you
- 13:55Speaker 1: do you feel like that's kind of ruining hunting in
- 13:56Speaker 1: a way in your opinion to some degree. But you know,
- 14:01Speaker 1: I think that's what drives a lot of people who
- 14:03Speaker 1: get out there, as long as they don't let it
- 14:04Speaker 1: consume them. I think it's good, you know, it could
- 14:07Speaker 1: kind of consume me when I was younger. Um, but
- 14:09Speaker 1: I think, you know, I don't see it's bad in
- 14:12Speaker 1: a lot of this new generation. I think I think
- 14:14Speaker 1: people do have a team down a bit more than
- 14:17Speaker 1: the older issue come come down a little a little
- 14:20Speaker 1: bit from you know, ten twenty years ago, it seemed
- 14:23Speaker 1: a peak and you know that's all everybody thought about, right,
- 14:28Speaker 1: I have seen like a little more especially it kind
- 14:31Speaker 1: of it seems like you know what, um, you know,
- 14:35Speaker 1: some of the public land issues and you know the
- 14:37Speaker 1: threats on public land there there has been a slight
- 14:40Speaker 1: switch to uh, you know, just more about the journey
- 14:44Speaker 1: and more about the hunt and more about the experience. Um.
- 14:48Speaker 1: You know, I have I have seen that focus and
- 14:50Speaker 1: that emphasis so that I actually really like. So that's
- 14:53Speaker 1: kind of that's good. You know, some of the things
- 14:55Speaker 1: Dan said kind of making me think about some of
- 14:58Speaker 1: these other questions that I've kind of always wanted to
- 15:00Speaker 1: ask him. And this is one that you actually answered
- 15:03Speaker 1: on a recent podcast, but maybe you could even take
- 15:06Speaker 1: it a little bit further. But um, you know, you've
- 15:10Speaker 1: been pretty open about you know, when you were younger
- 15:13Speaker 1: and you've had young kids that you know, your your
- 15:16Speaker 1: commitment to hunting was on such a high level that
- 15:18Speaker 1: you even miss some you know, important things that involved
- 15:22Speaker 1: your family. And you know, I can tell you know
- 15:26Speaker 1: by bringing that up you have some regret there. Um.
- 15:30Speaker 1: But at the same time, you know, you mentioned that
- 15:32Speaker 1: you wouldn't really change much. But what would you what
- 15:36Speaker 1: would you give for advice to like kind of aspiring
- 15:39Speaker 1: young hunters that you have families like young families at
- 15:42Speaker 1: home as far as like a time commitment. Um. And
- 15:45Speaker 1: then in addition to that, um, you know, what would
- 15:50Speaker 1: you if they kind of wanted to find that balance?
- 15:52Speaker 1: How do you or what would you tell them if
- 15:54Speaker 1: if they wanted to kind of maximize their success on
- 15:57Speaker 1: mature dear, I think what I'd see is a lot
- 16:01Speaker 1: of the people that have a problem making that balance
- 16:03Speaker 1: really uh put deer over everything, and uh what they
- 16:07Speaker 1: got to realize is that, um, if you shoot, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: even you Andy, I don't remember what you shot last year,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but I really look up to you. Do you remember
- 16:15Speaker 1: what I shot? You don't. I don't think anybody really
- 16:18Speaker 1: cares what any of us shot. Really, So if you
- 16:20Speaker 1: put another buck in the wall or you don't, I
- 16:22Speaker 1: don't think it's a big deal and to sacrifice your
- 16:26Speaker 1: family and your kids and birthdays and that kind of thing. Um,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Like you said, I took it to the extreme and
- 16:33Speaker 1: I regret a little bit of it. But yeah, that's
- 16:35Speaker 1: what made me who I am, you know. But I
- 16:38Speaker 1: think I would I would tell those kids that it
- 16:41Speaker 1: really doesn't matter if they put a buck in the
- 16:43Speaker 1: wall or not, you know that, to put their ethics
- 16:46Speaker 1: and morals and stuff first, and uh be able to
- 16:49Speaker 1: look at the deer that they get that they earn,
- 16:52Speaker 1: you know, um, with respect and respect and pride. I'm
- 16:56Speaker 1: curious Andy, Andy and Joe to you guys over there
- 17:00Speaker 1: about you, how how do you guys look at balancing
- 17:04Speaker 1: hunting and family obligations and stuff like that. Andy, do
- 17:08Speaker 1: you have any thoughts on that? Because I know you've
- 17:10Speaker 1: got you have a family yourself. How how's that been
- 17:12Speaker 1: for you? And then Joe would be creous for you're
- 17:14Speaker 1: jumping after that? Yeah, Um, I think I was um
- 17:20Speaker 1: a lot like Dan before I had kids. I was
- 17:24Speaker 1: I don't know if i'd say lucky, but my situation.
- 17:27Speaker 1: I ended up having kids a little bit later than
- 17:31Speaker 1: say most of my friends. Um, you know, I was
- 17:34Speaker 1: thirty two years old when I had my first, um
- 17:39Speaker 1: thirty one, so you know, literally from I started. I
- 17:44Speaker 1: started hunting late in my life too, so I was
- 17:46Speaker 1: right around the seventeen. But from seventeen to thirty one, UM,
- 17:51Speaker 1: that's all I did. You know, I literally scouted five
- 17:55Speaker 1: or six days a week, um, completely obsessed with it
- 17:58Speaker 1: and hunt it, you know, as often as possible, nearly
- 18:03Speaker 1: every day of the season. Um. And then once the
- 18:07Speaker 1: once the child came, UM, I toned it back um substantially.
- 18:12Speaker 1: But you know, it was that it was those early
- 18:15Speaker 1: years I've mentioned that before, that kind of time commitment, UM,
- 18:19Speaker 1: that really kind of set the foundation of of my learning.
- 18:23Speaker 1: I'd like to think that I'm still evolving, and I
- 18:25Speaker 1: I feel like I am, but just probably at a
- 18:27Speaker 1: slower pace than what I was at that time because
- 18:30Speaker 1: I just I literally that's what I That's just what
- 18:33Speaker 1: I did. I literally stopped every other hobby and passion
- 18:37Speaker 1: of mine and it was just hyper focused on big
- 18:40Speaker 1: deer and hunting. UM. But then you know, toned it
- 18:44Speaker 1: back and now I just try to try to keep
- 18:46Speaker 1: a balance. I don't want to miss anything with the
- 18:49Speaker 1: the kids, and UM, you know, I just wouldn't really
- 18:52Speaker 1: feel right about that, And I don't know, I looked
- 18:55Speaker 1: at when Dan kind of opened up about that. I
- 18:58Speaker 1: remember seeing a threat about it a few years years ago,
- 19:00Speaker 1: and I just thought that those were really wise words,
- 19:03Speaker 1: you know that you know, you don't let it consume you,
- 19:06Speaker 1: and there's there's other things that are more important, and
- 19:08Speaker 1: there's nobody's really going to care what you you killed
- 19:11Speaker 1: at the end of the day. You know, at the
- 19:12Speaker 1: end of your life, no one's gonna care what your
- 19:14Speaker 1: wall looks like or how many big bucks you have
- 19:16Speaker 1: on it. So I try to keep that in perspective
- 19:19Speaker 1: now and just really focus on that that family time.
- 19:23Speaker 1: But when it's time to scout and time to hunt,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you know, it's a hundercent commitment during that time frame. Yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I had a similar journey, you know, other than I,
- 19:34Speaker 1: you know, grew up hunting and uh, I spent a
- 19:39Speaker 1: hundred and ten percent of my time, um, you know,
- 19:44Speaker 1: uh hunting all through my teens and early twenties. And
- 19:50Speaker 1: it just slowly how much time I've been able to
- 19:52Speaker 1: spend and slowly with each days in my life and
- 19:55Speaker 1: kids being kind of most recent days because I had
- 19:57Speaker 1: kids like to Hucky and b I I've got three
- 19:59Speaker 1: your in the five year old right now. It so
- 20:01Speaker 1: not that long a thirties, so um yeah, you know,
- 20:07Speaker 1: school and having a career and you know now I've
- 20:10Speaker 1: got a managerial position at work and every everything just
- 20:14Speaker 1: knocked a few more hours off it, um, which it's unfortunate.
- 20:18Speaker 1: And uh, you know, yeah the fire still burns. That's
- 20:21Speaker 1: for shared, for getting out there, but it's not you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: it's it's a matter of priorities and life's what you
- 20:28Speaker 1: make of it. You only get one life, so that's
- 20:30Speaker 1: that's all I look at it, and that I agree,
- 20:32Speaker 1: like the only keep told that really care what they shoot.
- 20:36Speaker 1: You know, it's the face in the mirror. And a
- 20:38Speaker 1: lot of times I think other people, you know a
- 20:40Speaker 1: lot of people build it up way too much. And
- 20:43Speaker 1: there's you know, people out there in the industry that
- 20:47Speaker 1: I think it's kind of unfortunate. You know, it's all
- 20:50Speaker 1: or nothing, and it seems like, you know, there's no
- 20:53Speaker 1: mention of family or they were married, you know, it
- 20:56Speaker 1: fell apart because they put that ahead of everything else,
- 20:59Speaker 1: and I think that really unfortunate. Yeah, my son right now,
- 21:03Speaker 1: you know, you've asking to take him deer hunting. This
- 21:05Speaker 1: fall and I'm going to you know that that that
- 21:08Speaker 1: and I kind of shoot a big buck doing it. No,
- 21:11Speaker 1: and you know, hopefully with the good deer. Uh. And
- 21:14Speaker 1: but that I wouldn't have it any other way. When
- 21:17Speaker 1: you have somebody, you know, kid asking it that, that's
- 21:20Speaker 1: just magical. Yeah, I know this this whole idea, like
- 21:26Speaker 1: you know, taking better advantage of the of the time
- 21:28Speaker 1: that you do have and being a little more efficient
- 21:31Speaker 1: with it. I know that's something you've talked about, Andy,
- 21:32Speaker 1: because not only do you have like the family obligations,
- 21:34Speaker 1: but also your job doesn't like you get away for
- 21:37Speaker 1: really big long stretches of time. Um so so to
- 21:40Speaker 1: you Dan. Then for someone who's in a situation kind
- 21:44Speaker 1: of like this where they're trying to balance family and
- 21:45Speaker 1: work and hunting and they're just trying to become a
- 21:48Speaker 1: more efficient hunter and use the time they do have
- 21:50Speaker 1: more effectively, you know what what kind of things would
- 21:53Speaker 1: you offer now is you've been able to kind of
- 21:55Speaker 1: go through that transition yourself to becoming more efficient with
- 21:58Speaker 1: that time. Yeah, it's hard if you don't If you
- 22:01Speaker 1: don't hunt a lot, you don't hear it from a
- 22:03Speaker 1: lot of guys who hunt weekends, and so much changes
- 22:07Speaker 1: in the woods and the patterns changed so much in
- 22:09Speaker 1: a week that it's hard to keep up if you're
- 22:11Speaker 1: not out there a lot. I still hunt, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 1: four or five times a week, but to me, that's
- 22:17Speaker 1: a lot less than I used to. Uh, you know,
- 22:22Speaker 1: I think one of the big things is to not
- 22:24Speaker 1: overlook the properties near your house. I kill a lot
- 22:28Speaker 1: of big bucks on property that's really over pressured. That's
- 22:32Speaker 1: convenient because I don't have two hours to go run
- 22:35Speaker 1: to the great property, but I got, you know, thirty
- 22:39Speaker 1: minutes after work to run down the street and hunt
- 22:41Speaker 1: the public swamp where everybody else's h So, you know,
- 22:47Speaker 1: just learning that property and getting out and getting chances
- 22:49Speaker 1: because I have more time to hunt that. I kill
- 22:52Speaker 1: a lot of bucks in hard situations just because I'm
- 22:56Speaker 1: out there, you know, And and I push it. So
- 22:59Speaker 1: I think, uh, you know, to find stuff near your home,
- 23:03Speaker 1: near your work, like where you can get out of
- 23:05Speaker 1: work and go straight out on a day that maybe
- 23:07Speaker 1: your family's off doing something or whatever. You can get
- 23:10Speaker 1: out more that way on page you normally wouldn't. I
- 23:15Speaker 1: think that helps a lot. And Andy, would you add
- 23:19Speaker 1: anything since I've mentioned that you're kind of in that
- 23:20Speaker 1: spot a little bit too. Yeah. No, that's uh, that's
- 23:24Speaker 1: exactly what I do. Dan. We've got some stuff close
- 23:27Speaker 1: to home and work that it certainly isn't what I
- 23:31Speaker 1: would consider good quality, but I know it intimately. And um,
- 23:36Speaker 1: you know, when a big buck shows up, which isn't
- 23:39Speaker 1: all that often, but you know, when they do, they're
- 23:42Speaker 1: you know, you usually have a pretty good idea on
- 23:44Speaker 1: how to hunt them and a good chance of getting him.
- 23:46Speaker 1: But other than that, I would just say, you know,
- 23:50Speaker 1: just really you know, when you when you kind of
- 23:53Speaker 1: settle it in some areas, UM, if you can't put
- 23:56Speaker 1: a lot of time in hunting, make sure you put
- 23:58Speaker 1: in as much time at possible scouting. Um. And I
- 24:02Speaker 1: know Dan believes in this too, but uh, you know
- 24:05Speaker 1: I scout way more than the actual hunts that I get,
- 24:07Speaker 1: So I try to intimately learn the areas, uh to
- 24:13Speaker 1: the point where I just they're almost they almost feel
- 24:16Speaker 1: like home to me. You know. If there's um, you know,
- 24:19Speaker 1: there's I know every betting area, and I know every
- 24:23Speaker 1: water source and um, every fruit bearing tree and you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: just kind of all that kind of stuff, and then
- 24:29Speaker 1: you know, build on that with hunting experiences and keep notes.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Um you know, uh, you know, tendencies and times of
- 24:37Speaker 1: year when things seem to be better, and just kind
- 24:39Speaker 1: of accumulate all that and that you can really kind
- 24:41Speaker 1: of increase your efficiency with uh you know, with that knowledge.
- 24:48Speaker 1: You bring up a really good point because knowing that
- 24:52Speaker 1: knowing the area intimately is really important because if you
- 24:55Speaker 1: don't scout in the onetime, if you don't take that time,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you get to really learn that prob pretty and you're
- 25:00Speaker 1: going out to trying to figure it out. I mean,
- 25:02Speaker 1: good luck. When you're on ten days a year or
- 25:03Speaker 1: twenty days a year, you're gonna you're gonna struggle. Um,
- 25:07Speaker 1: Like Andy says, I mean, I go into a three
- 25:09Speaker 1: thousand acre property behind my house here, I know where
- 25:12Speaker 1: every bedtonary is. So if once there, I know where
- 25:14Speaker 1: he's gonna be. So as I have to find sign
- 25:17Speaker 1: up a buck and go okay, he's in one of
- 25:18Speaker 1: these you know, three or four bettering areas and then
- 25:21Speaker 1: hunt him down. Um. But if you can't, if you
- 25:25Speaker 1: because you're time's limited, don't scout in spring and don't
- 25:28Speaker 1: scout during the season, you're in for a long, hard hunt.
- 25:33Speaker 1: That's a lot of guys think they find a vetinary
- 25:36Speaker 1: or something too, and then they bank on it. You know.
- 25:38Speaker 1: You see a lot of these new guys get really
- 25:39Speaker 1: excited when they find a good bedtry. And I think
- 25:41Speaker 1: Andy joking, I relate to this. You find some of
- 25:44Speaker 1: these vetinaries and they look so tore up, you think, oh,
- 25:46Speaker 1: this is golden Well. I can tell you from experience.
- 25:49Speaker 1: I've hunted like twenty of those last year and I
- 25:50Speaker 1: ended up coming out of it without a buck last year.
- 25:53Speaker 1: You know, on the question, I wanted to, Uh, they
- 26:00Speaker 1: somebody is really limited at your time. They get two
- 26:02Speaker 1: weeks to vocation that's been hot. How would you split
- 26:07Speaker 1: at the tweet and scouting and highing like you got? Um,
- 26:11Speaker 1: you know, that's a good question. I mean I would
- 26:18Speaker 1: definitely want to get some spring scouting and but you
- 26:20Speaker 1: think you could get some of that done on the weekends. Um,
- 26:24Speaker 1: But if that's all I had was two weeks period
- 26:27Speaker 1: for the whole year, I think it would go into scouting. Yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: but you know, I go I go on trips a
- 26:32Speaker 1: lot and go to new areas and and I always
- 26:34Speaker 1: like hunting spots I've never been, and I think it's
- 26:37Speaker 1: kind of exciting to go in and learn something, to
- 26:39Speaker 1: figure it out. And when I go to those new properties,
- 26:42Speaker 1: I usually don't hunt mornings and I scout my whole
- 26:45Speaker 1: day and then I'm hunting in a spot that I
- 26:47Speaker 1: scouted that day whatever was best, And that way I'm
- 26:51Speaker 1: not you know, I don't wait till deer walk through
- 26:54Speaker 1: and smells I've been there. But I'm going to the
- 26:56Speaker 1: outskirts of what looks like betting to me. That's been
- 26:58Speaker 1: real good to me going in hunting in that manner
- 27:01Speaker 1: scout hunting, you know, can can you elaborate on what
- 27:05Speaker 1: that actually looks like? Then during that that new property process,
- 27:09Speaker 1: what's the actual scouting process during that period when you're
- 27:12Speaker 1: actually gonna go hunt that day, Well, I'm trying to
- 27:16Speaker 1: figure out what I think is betting. I mean a little.
- 27:18Speaker 1: It's gonna be looking at maps, um you know, aerials,
- 27:22Speaker 1: um if it's swamp or flat ground and you know
- 27:25Speaker 1: on the top as if it's hilly or both, and uh,
- 27:30Speaker 1: then I'm gonna go out and actually look and see
- 27:32Speaker 1: what's got the cover that all old deer and such.
- 27:35Speaker 1: And then I'm not going to go to where I
- 27:36Speaker 1: think the betting is, but I'm gonna go to where
- 27:38Speaker 1: you know, I'm gonna kind of circle it the seefter
- 27:40Speaker 1: scoop sign coming in and out and then try to
- 27:43Speaker 1: get as close fall and that sign as I can
- 27:46Speaker 1: and uh set up on it. Yeah. I saw I
- 27:50Speaker 1: saw a video that you and Mario did where you
- 27:52Speaker 1: guys were reviewing your two thousand seventeen season, and you
- 27:56Speaker 1: talked about this kind of grid style approach to hunting
- 27:59Speaker 1: a new property where you wrote the property down in
- 28:01Speaker 1: two sections and then worked your way through them. Can
- 28:03Speaker 1: you can you talk about that a little bit? Uh,
- 28:06Speaker 1: that that particular style of hunting originated uh way back
- 28:11Speaker 1: when I sudden the property and there was a really
- 28:14Speaker 1: nice buck on that property for that time frame, and
- 28:18Speaker 1: I was on all the key spot that had always
- 28:20Speaker 1: produced and never seen this book. But he's showing up
- 28:22Speaker 1: on cameras and the you know, in the fielding areas
- 28:26Speaker 1: or mass trees um right after dark. So I knew
- 28:30Speaker 1: he was in there, but I couldn't figure out where
- 28:32Speaker 1: he was. And I knew if it wasn't seen him,
- 28:33Speaker 1: wasn't see him in daylight. And I took that property
- 28:36Speaker 1: and and I broke it down into like ten acre squares,
- 28:42Speaker 1: and I just I was gonna hunt every square until
- 28:44Speaker 1: I got through the property. And I got towards the
- 28:47Speaker 1: hand and I and one of the spots that was
- 28:50Speaker 1: up to hunt. It was just an open wood lot,
- 28:53Speaker 1: and that thought, where are the odds? But I'm gonna
- 28:55Speaker 1: give a shot. And I went in there in that book,
- 28:58Speaker 1: got up from behind some brush the transition and came
- 29:01Speaker 1: to me and I shot it just out of the blue.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I didn't know he was there or anything else, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: went over there. There's just a beat bet there that
- 29:07Speaker 1: I would never found because I would never thought he
- 29:10Speaker 1: betted there. So then I started to figure out that
- 29:13Speaker 1: you know, sometimes you just can't see it. And if
- 29:16Speaker 1: you break that property down and grid it like that
- 29:19Speaker 1: and go in and force yourself to hunt a new
- 29:21Speaker 1: section each time, um, you can find those bucks that
- 29:25Speaker 1: are on that property pretty quick. Do you think I'm
- 29:29Speaker 1: waiting for that that buck to come to you? You're
- 29:31Speaker 1: going to him. And then by doing the tenant or
- 29:34Speaker 1: um area and in the best spot, even if he's
- 29:37Speaker 1: not in the best spot, you're probably gonna see your
- 29:40Speaker 1: hearer sent them if you're in that area and he's
- 29:42Speaker 1: in it. Yeah, so so when is that kind of
- 29:46Speaker 1: approach better than the approach that you mentioned before where
- 29:50Speaker 1: you scout during the day for specific sign looking for
- 29:52Speaker 1: a certain things. You saw a map and then hunted
- 29:54Speaker 1: that or do those two things go hand in hand sometimes?
- 29:58Speaker 1: Well they can, they kind of go hand and in
- 30:00Speaker 1: but you know, I think my first approach is to
- 30:04Speaker 1: go in there and scout those transitions, find the sign
- 30:06Speaker 1: hummed on like like I said earlier. But sometimes I
- 30:10Speaker 1: struggled with a certain book after a certain animal, and
- 30:13Speaker 1: I can't get them through those traditional memes um traditional
- 30:17Speaker 1: to me anyways, And that's when I and I decide
- 30:21Speaker 1: where I'm going and I'm finding them, um, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I'm just hunting them down basically. Yeah, yeah, that makes sense,
- 30:29Speaker 1: all right, Andy? What else is on your man? Uh?
- 30:33Speaker 1: I wanted to touch on some more some more bedding stuff. Um.
- 30:38Speaker 1: You know you've talked a lot about, um, like any
- 30:42Speaker 1: wind beds, you know, beds that are used in type
- 30:45Speaker 1: of any type of wind direction and that wind based beds.
- 30:48Speaker 1: Can you kind of explain um, like the differences um
- 30:52Speaker 1: that you see in regards to like terrain or examples
- 30:56Speaker 1: of where you might find each you know, where they
- 30:58Speaker 1: where they might be the most common. And how you
- 31:01Speaker 1: are what which one do you think are the most
- 31:03Speaker 1: effective to target? Uh, I don't I don't know about
- 31:09Speaker 1: one being more effective than the other to target. But UM,
- 31:13Speaker 1: the eating wind beds are usually the easiest to hunt
- 31:16Speaker 1: because you can get the closest because it's UM. They're
- 31:18Speaker 1: usually not site based UM. But you can tell the
- 31:22Speaker 1: difference between these beds. I think it's a good topic
- 31:24Speaker 1: because we haven't really talked about this a lot in
- 31:26Speaker 1: like podcasts or anything. But when you look at a
- 31:29Speaker 1: buck bed, it's different than a dough bed because the
- 31:31Speaker 1: dose like bed net circle that open area. A buck
- 31:35Speaker 1: puts his puts himself, you know, in cover, and he's
- 31:38Speaker 1: worried about himself. So when you look at that bed,
- 31:39Speaker 1: you're thinking, you know, um, this animal is here so
- 31:45Speaker 1: that you can't get near him instead of working as
- 31:47Speaker 1: that group. And if you've got a buck who puts
- 31:50Speaker 1: his back up against something and he's got an open
- 31:52Speaker 1: view the other way, I guarantee that winds coming from
- 31:56Speaker 1: the obstacle and he's looking down winding it open. So
- 32:00Speaker 1: you can see those UM wind based betting by looking
- 32:05Speaker 1: for the opening. You know, if you look in hill
- 32:08Speaker 1: countries really, um the big one for for that wind
- 32:12Speaker 1: based And if you look at those beds, you can
- 32:14Speaker 1: you can see how they put themselves up against a
- 32:16Speaker 1: tree or behind the tree, and they looked down the hill,
- 32:19Speaker 1: you know, with the wind to the back. Um, you
- 32:22Speaker 1: see the same thing. And you know, like a farm country,
- 32:24Speaker 1: they'll get up on the edge of a field in
- 32:26Speaker 1: bed you know, just ten twenty ft into the cover,
- 32:29Speaker 1: but where they can kind of see out into the
- 32:30Speaker 1: field or see down a lane into that field. Uh,
- 32:34Speaker 1: they'll have that wind to their back. So they're on
- 32:37Speaker 1: those um those tree lines looking at the field with
- 32:42Speaker 1: the wind to the back. And you know, just a
- 32:44Speaker 1: guy that hunts farm if he if he knows that much,
- 32:47Speaker 1: he doesn't have to hunt the way the wind hunt.
- 32:50Speaker 1: But if you know those box are going to bed
- 32:53Speaker 1: on the side that's got the wind coming out of
- 32:55Speaker 1: the woods, he does not have to walk into their
- 32:57Speaker 1: to their eyesight, you know what I mean. Yeah, on
- 33:00Speaker 1: the topic of terrain, do you see any wind beds
- 33:05Speaker 1: uh that you know, beds with any wind you uh
- 33:10Speaker 1: more common contest on this, but you seem more common
- 33:12Speaker 1: in third terrain like swamps. Yeah, swamps and marshes have
- 33:18Speaker 1: more the wind based and non won based beds are
- 33:21Speaker 1: in every train, but the majority of non wind beds
- 33:25Speaker 1: that are good for big bucks are in marshes and swamps,
- 33:28Speaker 1: or the majority of wind based beds are in hill country,
- 33:32Speaker 1: more foreign country and edges. How about when you find
- 33:36Speaker 1: beds down low wind hill country? Do you find those
- 33:39Speaker 1: to be more often? Win any wind? That? Where do
- 33:42Speaker 1: you find them to be more commonly? I know, usually
- 33:46Speaker 1: it depends on the cover. If they're in heavy grass
- 33:49Speaker 1: heavy brush, UM, and they don't have a good view,
- 33:53Speaker 1: then they're usually any wind. If they're betting on edge
- 33:57Speaker 1: looking towards old with thick the back or something to
- 34:00Speaker 1: the back, then there in the wind based and you
- 34:03Speaker 1: have to go out there just look at it. I
- 34:04Speaker 1: mean those low areas, you know, it's all hard to
- 34:07Speaker 1: set up. Yeah, that's that's something I've just wondered. Uh,
- 34:12Speaker 1: when occasionally I run into deer downlow in the hills,
- 34:16Speaker 1: UM less likely to be associated when you're not. It's
- 34:19Speaker 1: a big one in U In big woods too, you
- 34:22Speaker 1: got where you have those old clear cuts that grow thick.
- 34:25Speaker 1: Those big box are usually on the down wind edge
- 34:28Speaker 1: to the open woods and they'll look into the open
- 34:30Speaker 1: woods from the edge of that where guys think that
- 34:32Speaker 1: they're in the middle of that thick area, they're usually not.
- 34:37Speaker 1: So you're saying that there they've got the wind blowing
- 34:40Speaker 1: from the thick behind their back and they're watching the
- 34:43Speaker 1: open woods in front of them right right, and some
- 34:46Speaker 1: steps into that open woods, they just slide into the thick.
- 34:49Speaker 1: If they smell something or here's something in that thick
- 34:51Speaker 1: coming at them, they go out. And then they also,
- 34:54Speaker 1: like on that big woods, if there's a terrain feature
- 34:57Speaker 1: along that edge is not just a straight long like
- 35:00Speaker 1: just one spot where they got a little point of
- 35:02Speaker 1: the thick stuff going out, they'll get on on that
- 35:03Speaker 1: point so they can see all the way around the
- 35:06Speaker 1: point and smell from behind, just like in Hill Country,
- 35:09Speaker 1: only it's flat. Yeah. Yeah, So speaking of these different
- 35:13Speaker 1: types of betting areas, right in past episodes we've done
- 35:16Speaker 1: with you, and then on your past DVD s you've
- 35:18Speaker 1: had the Hill Country DVD is talking a lot about
- 35:21Speaker 1: the different types of betting situations. There. You've got the
- 35:23Speaker 1: Martian Swamp betting areas that we've talked about a lot
- 35:25Speaker 1: in the past. We've got a new DVD coming out
- 35:28Speaker 1: about farmland hunting. Um, can you talk specifically about that?
- 35:32Speaker 1: What types of things? And you alluded to a few
- 35:34Speaker 1: things already, but is there anything else when it comes
- 35:36Speaker 1: to hunting farmland as far as how you think about
- 35:39Speaker 1: their betting, how you hunt to that related to that
- 35:42Speaker 1: betting in this specific farm situations. Sure, and I'll give
- 35:47Speaker 1: you my taking. I'd like to hear handies on it
- 35:49Speaker 1: because I don't know any scott little experience there um
- 35:53Speaker 1: and Joe Joe comes from farm farm area to um.
- 35:56Speaker 1: But one of the big things I think people misunderstandable
- 36:01Speaker 1: farm country is I've learned a lot of it, and
- 36:04Speaker 1: it's pretty rare. I find a big buck in the
- 36:06Speaker 1: big wood lot in the middle of the farm. The
- 36:09Speaker 1: big box usually are on the tree lines. I'm a
- 36:12Speaker 1: little brush off to the side. They're out in more
- 36:14Speaker 1: of the open areas, in the thick spot that's being overlooked.
- 36:18Speaker 1: It's not too often I see him in that big block.
- 36:20Speaker 1: If I do seem in that big block, it's that
- 36:23Speaker 1: downwind side on the downwind end of that block. So
- 36:27Speaker 1: as you see, yeah, I do see that quite a bit. Um.
- 36:32Speaker 1: It's like where I hunt uh in Michigan. I'd say
- 36:35Speaker 1: it's a pretty good mix of timber and farm land.
- 36:38Speaker 1: We do got quite a bit of cover and there's
- 36:41Speaker 1: you know, you got your marshes and your slamp stuff.
- 36:43Speaker 1: But when I where I'm in uh northern Ohio is
- 36:49Speaker 1: like craft fields with little tiny woodlots, and they bed
- 36:54Speaker 1: uh exactly how Dan says. Um. You know usually if
- 36:58Speaker 1: they if they are in them, um a wood lot,
- 37:01Speaker 1: they'll they'll bed right on the edge kind of facing
- 37:04Speaker 1: the open ground. Um. And for a lot of years, UM,
- 37:10Speaker 1: I would get busted because that's you kind of put
- 37:12Speaker 1: the wind in your face and you kind of try
- 37:13Speaker 1: to sneak into this little wood lot you know that
- 37:16Speaker 1: you think are holding all this deer and there you know,
- 37:18Speaker 1: the what I would find after scouting is there be
- 37:21Speaker 1: beds right just inside the wood lot, you know before
- 37:24Speaker 1: right on the edge of where it kind of you
- 37:26Speaker 1: start to get some um some understory of facing the
- 37:31Speaker 1: field that I was actually accessing from. And then I
- 37:33Speaker 1: also find them in like the edges of hedgerows, like
- 37:37Speaker 1: right right at the chip, or like the little drainage um,
- 37:40Speaker 1: you know, the little drainage ditches. You know, a whole
- 37:42Speaker 1: a little bit of water. They'll be like little curves
- 37:44Speaker 1: or little angles and those, and there'll be beds there where,
- 37:47Speaker 1: you know, maybe the the combine can't quite hit, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 1: right on the edge, so you get these little pockets
- 37:53Speaker 1: the cover and what's that doesn't need to be true.
- 37:57Speaker 1: They don't need to be true either mentioned that. No, no,
- 38:01Speaker 1: not right, not at all. Right, But you watch all
- 38:05Speaker 1: the honors go straight with lives. You know. Another thing
- 38:08Speaker 1: I've noticed on those farms too, is when they have
- 38:11Speaker 1: one access and those hunter is always parking the same spot.
- 38:14Speaker 1: I mean, the biggest stuff I find is usually set
- 38:16Speaker 1: up to watch that access. How long do you think
- 38:19Speaker 1: that takes for local bucks to kind of figure that
- 38:22Speaker 1: out and start adjusting their betting to watch that? Is
- 38:24Speaker 1: that something that can happen like right now? I don't
- 38:28Speaker 1: know now long it takes. Um so the time when
- 38:31Speaker 1: I run into it, it's it's already been a prolonged thing,
- 38:35Speaker 1: you know. Um. I can't think of any place where
- 38:38Speaker 1: I'm the one who started hunting their first on the farm.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Most of the farms I've been on her shared access.
- 38:44Speaker 1: But I go scout properties a lot for people. And
- 38:47Speaker 1: that's one thing I look for right away is those
- 38:50Speaker 1: bucks that are in that little forgotten spot watching their
- 38:53Speaker 1: access and that's usually where I find the biggest stuns. Joe,
- 38:57Speaker 1: you didn't get to share your thoughts on on your
- 39:00Speaker 1: farm country bedding observations. What would you say there? Yeah,
- 39:04Speaker 1: I agree entirely. Sam hunt everything from like ten or
- 39:10Speaker 1: cover up to Iowa. So, um, you know, in the
- 39:15Speaker 1: areas where covered limited. For one, there's a huge change
- 39:19Speaker 1: when the crops come out. I would point out that,
- 39:21Speaker 1: and everybody kind of knows that. But you go from
- 39:24Speaker 1: a hundred percent cover down to ten you know, um
- 39:27Speaker 1: when the corn is picked. But still those small areas,
- 39:31Speaker 1: you know, if the grahasses, you know, eight tall, you
- 39:37Speaker 1: might find a deer bed in there, and might find
- 39:39Speaker 1: a pick buck beded in there, you know, and especially
- 39:41Speaker 1: the higher the pressure is, the less likely they are
- 39:43Speaker 1: going to bed anywhere there's trees, you know, it's a
- 39:46Speaker 1: little you'll find a beded on graph terraces and then
- 39:51Speaker 1: you know, drainage sales if the graphs is a tall
- 39:54Speaker 1: enough couple weeds or whatever. Um on the ends of
- 39:57Speaker 1: Little Senior September far more like Pla. Then the larger
- 40:02Speaker 1: degree and another question for dan Um, how do you
- 40:07Speaker 1: see frequency of using beds change and farm country do
- 40:12Speaker 1: you see for you know, my observation is there seems
- 40:16Speaker 1: to be more satellite beds less you know, heavily used
- 40:20Speaker 1: primary beds. Bucks might be a little more nomadic. I
- 40:24Speaker 1: am not saying they don't have core its and core
- 40:26Speaker 1: betting areas. They definitely do, but I'm just curious what
- 40:29Speaker 1: your observation has been. I see a lot of core
- 40:32Speaker 1: bed and areas, just like I doing other trains. Um,
- 40:35Speaker 1: it's a little more nomadic, like you said, but what
- 40:38Speaker 1: I see is they don't wear those beds in because
- 40:40Speaker 1: they shift around a lot. I think they shift around
- 40:43Speaker 1: a lot, and based on the exact wind um. For example,
- 40:47Speaker 1: there's a little farmed on the street that I lunched
- 40:49Speaker 1: over here my buddy Dave bones. It gets heavy pressure
- 40:52Speaker 1: all the way around it, but there's one spot where
- 40:55Speaker 1: the bucks that we've killed there come out of. It's
- 40:57Speaker 1: obviously the primary betting and no matter what time of
- 41:00Speaker 1: the year when we see bucks, that's generally where he
- 41:03Speaker 1: come out at of the time. And you go in
- 41:06Speaker 1: here and for some of it doesn't have an eye
- 41:09Speaker 1: for it, you'd have a hard time seeing those beds
- 41:13Speaker 1: and the area is probably in two acres in size,
- 41:15Speaker 1: and it's a low density area, but you'd have a
- 41:18Speaker 1: hard time notice in those beds. I mean you going
- 41:19Speaker 1: there in the snow, you find them because you see
- 41:22Speaker 1: exactly where they laid. But I think they're moving a
- 41:24Speaker 1: lot based on you know, the thermal and the wind
- 41:27Speaker 1: and stuff. I don't think you're in the same bed
- 41:29Speaker 1: all day. You know where if you get into steep
- 41:32Speaker 1: hill country, you find those warm beds and you think
- 41:34Speaker 1: you've gotta made when it might not be used anymore
- 41:38Speaker 1: than the ones in farm country. Is just that explaining
- 41:40Speaker 1: in that exact same spot because of the wind and
- 41:42Speaker 1: thermal need at that spot all day long, So he's
- 41:45Speaker 1: not shifting around. Um So I think a lot of
- 41:49Speaker 1: times it just looks like it's not being used as much.
- 41:52Speaker 1: But I do see in farm country it's a lot
- 41:55Speaker 1: harder to see the bedding areas, or in any black
- 41:57Speaker 1: ground for that matter, unless it's like swamp or cattails,
- 42:01Speaker 1: then you see it better. But any flagground, like like
- 42:04Speaker 1: big woods or farm country, it's really hard to find
- 42:08Speaker 1: those worn in bits. Yeah, that's that's that's interesting to
- 42:12Speaker 1: say that because I hunted a farm once. I don't
- 42:14Speaker 1: hunt anymore, but for a number of years it was
- 42:17Speaker 1: like a two hundred acre farm and maybe eating fifteen
- 42:20Speaker 1: acres a cover total. And of the box that I
- 42:25Speaker 1: all the bucks that I saw at least three years
- 42:28Speaker 1: of old age. They came out of the top of
- 42:32Speaker 1: a skinny draw that was there was at an old
- 42:35Speaker 1: farm pond there. Damn had washed out so they retained
- 42:39Speaker 1: water anymore. And I grew up in brush, although deer
- 42:42Speaker 1: betted on the peril, you know, on the whold banks
- 42:44Speaker 1: of that pond, depending on the wind direction, and it
- 42:47Speaker 1: was only you know, maybe an acre in size, and
- 42:51Speaker 1: every stinking decent bucks that I saw on that two
- 42:53Speaker 1: hundred acres came out of that location. It was always amazing,
- 42:59Speaker 1: and you couldn't help find bet there. There was a
- 43:01Speaker 1: bunch of real life to youth bed but you add
- 43:02Speaker 1: up all the real life bets and there was a
- 43:05Speaker 1: lot of youth. Is there is there anything specific, Dan
- 43:09Speaker 1: that you were that that helps you or someone if
- 43:12Speaker 1: someone's listening who doesn't have the eye for when they're
- 43:14Speaker 1: looking for these beds in the farm country, that it's
- 43:17Speaker 1: not quite as obvious as there might be in hill countries,
- 43:19Speaker 1: anything they can be looking for to help find those
- 43:23Speaker 1: hard to find spots, you know, the biggest thing in
- 43:25Speaker 1: hill country, and it's hard to get the serve of
- 43:27Speaker 1: guys that don't have a lot of hunting time. But
- 43:29Speaker 1: it's observation. Um, I don't hunt as much as I
- 43:33Speaker 1: observe and farm. I'll sit back and watch and the
- 43:36Speaker 1: deer get more used to coming out earlier, and you
- 43:40Speaker 1: see what's going on, and you're not damaging the property
- 43:42Speaker 1: by jumping in here and spooking everything out. You see
- 43:45Speaker 1: what's going on. So you know, you're watching area expecting
- 43:48Speaker 1: the bok to come out, and all of a sudden
- 43:49Speaker 1: you see him from out somewhere's else and now you're like, oh,
- 43:51Speaker 1: if I would have went in her, how to spook them?
- 43:53Speaker 1: But in foreign country, I think a lot of it's
- 43:55Speaker 1: observing and it's uh, you know, watching from a distance
- 43:58Speaker 1: and then moving in with us to right. And that's
- 44:00Speaker 1: an too because I think, uh, you know, when I
- 44:03Speaker 1: actually see a buck make a move and I make
- 44:05Speaker 1: a move on him, I think it's a one in
- 44:06Speaker 1: four chance I get an opportunity at him by moving
- 44:09Speaker 1: in the next day, But it wasn't four odds ain't bad. Yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 1: that's that's a good thing. That example that I talked
- 44:16Speaker 1: about earlier, that is, you know that that far the
- 44:19Speaker 1: oldly reason like that was good ten years ago, and
- 44:22Speaker 1: I didn't really have a very good understanding of betting whatsoever.
- 44:25Speaker 1: The only reason I knew was a betting area was
- 44:27Speaker 1: watching the deer come out of it, because I was
- 44:28Speaker 1: set up in other places, and I'll shoot the buck
- 44:31Speaker 1: came out of that. I might not be real fast owner,
- 44:34Speaker 1: but that's very It's all that a time or two,
- 44:36Speaker 1: you know, it was clearly there bet in there nowhere else.
- 44:42Speaker 1: I gotta follow up question for dan Um kind of
- 44:45Speaker 1: in regards to the farm betting Um. One of the
- 44:48Speaker 1: things I struggle with and like my more open areas,
- 44:51Speaker 1: I guess is you know, for instance, there's this one piece,
- 44:55Speaker 1: uh well, there's a couple of pieces I'm thinking about,
- 44:57Speaker 1: but one in general is has very little has a
- 45:00Speaker 1: real tiny wood lot, and you know, the big bucks
- 45:04Speaker 1: don't really bed in there at all. But it's got
- 45:07Speaker 1: some hedgerows coming off and a little drainage dish that
- 45:12Speaker 1: comes off that's has real tall, kind of overgrown grass
- 45:15Speaker 1: along it, and if you walk the whole piece, you
- 45:18Speaker 1: walked every edge, you'll find I don't know, maybe six
- 45:22Speaker 1: buck beds, and you know, I have my my thoughts
- 45:26Speaker 1: on which ones are the best because they're the most
- 45:28Speaker 1: worn and and just kind of make the most sense.
- 45:30Speaker 1: But then there, you know, all these other ones that
- 45:32Speaker 1: you might call satellite beds or they're less used. Do
- 45:36Speaker 1: you what what do you do with those? Because I
- 45:40Speaker 1: find like more times than not, like okay, I glass
- 45:42Speaker 1: a buck, or I get a picture of a book
- 45:44Speaker 1: on this property, I'm like, okay, you know, here's the wind,
- 45:48Speaker 1: this is where I think he's gonna be, and you know,
- 45:51Speaker 1: I'm speaking into that bed, and it seems like more
- 45:54Speaker 1: times than not, I get busted by a deer that's
- 45:56Speaker 1: in one of these satellite beds that I kind of help, um,
- 45:59Speaker 1: you know, at a lower value, but they're still getting used.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I mean, do you systematically kind of hunt those as well,
- 46:07Speaker 1: or do you go right or the one that you know?
- 46:09Speaker 1: I don't. I don't want the satellite, but if I
- 46:11Speaker 1: know it's satellite betting and there's smaller books being in
- 46:13Speaker 1: those spots, I don't worry about them. I try not
- 46:18Speaker 1: to spook them. If there's a way I can get
- 46:19Speaker 1: into without spooking, I do it. But if I have
- 46:22Speaker 1: to spook, my spook them. And one thing I do
- 46:24Speaker 1: is I go in early. Um. I think if you
- 46:27Speaker 1: spook younger deer early in today the book is less
- 46:31Speaker 1: likely to get up and run off. If it's more
- 46:33Speaker 1: towards the evening, when he's more alert and getting up anyways,
- 46:37Speaker 1: I think he's more likely to get the bust out
- 46:39Speaker 1: of there. And uh, there's some credits to that in
- 46:42Speaker 1: my observations too, So I think that's working. Um. But
- 46:46Speaker 1: I've kicked up plenty of deer where they've ran right
- 46:49Speaker 1: through the bed arry and you think, damn it, you know,
- 46:52Speaker 1: and I set up anyways, and I've had the big
- 46:54Speaker 1: buck get up right where that bucket run through and
- 46:56Speaker 1: come to me. But I've also had times when you
- 46:59Speaker 1: I've seen them run through there in the in the
- 47:01Speaker 1: big buck get up and run with them. So it's
- 47:04Speaker 1: not what you want to do, um, but you might
- 47:08Speaker 1: have to. You don't kick a deer or two to
- 47:10Speaker 1: get in there. It's just part of it. Mm hmmm. Um.
- 47:15Speaker 1: I want to get your opinion on this too. So
- 47:18Speaker 1: I founded both and I've seen some pretty significant differences
- 47:23Speaker 1: between the two, but really high deer density areas versus
- 47:28Speaker 1: really low deer density areas. So my open area that
- 47:31Speaker 1: I hunt is really low, low deer density, UM, not
- 47:35Speaker 1: much cover for deer, very low numbers. You'll get skunks
- 47:38Speaker 1: nine out of ten times. But when you do see
- 47:40Speaker 1: a you know, a buckets typically a good one. But
- 47:43Speaker 1: what I what I see is as much later movement.
- 47:46Speaker 1: I'm talking about outside the rut here. So let's talk
- 47:49Speaker 1: about like, you know, kind of early season through mid October,
- 47:53Speaker 1: but I see much later movement, um, you know, with
- 47:57Speaker 1: the lower deer density. UM. Kind of really okay, you're
- 48:03Speaker 1: seeing the higher density, and I was like, I'm seeing
- 48:05Speaker 1: the opposite. I'm seeing the same thing you're seeing. Okay, yeah,
- 48:08Speaker 1: and the high deer density is what I'm seeing is
- 48:10Speaker 1: much earlier movement, even by the mature deer. But what
- 48:14Speaker 1: it makes it this cult is all the influx of
- 48:17Speaker 1: other deer that are moving by you or past you,
- 48:20Speaker 1: are all around you, and then it's like you spook
- 48:23Speaker 1: one of them. It's like a domino effect, you know,
- 48:25Speaker 1: and it just kind of sets and it just kind
- 48:29Speaker 1: of sets them all off, and they all end up
- 48:30Speaker 1: running back. So I find difficulty in both situations. But
- 48:34Speaker 1: is that kind of like what you see too? Yeah,
- 48:36Speaker 1: I see that a lot too. Uh, I do see
- 48:38Speaker 1: that like Uh. I think it's maybe the younger deer
- 48:40Speaker 1: getting moving around to get the bigger books up with
- 48:42Speaker 1: the higher density. Even outside of the road, you seem
- 48:45Speaker 1: to get the bigger buck movement earlier. Um. Yeah. And
- 48:50Speaker 1: for me, I think if I think back my my
- 48:54Speaker 1: younger days, I had a lot of problems with those
- 48:56Speaker 1: deer coming and spooking um, the early arrivals and spooking
- 49:01Speaker 1: the buck on me. It doesn't happen as much anymore.
- 49:04Speaker 1: And I think it's because I'm setting up better and
- 49:06Speaker 1: wiser and h taking into effect. You know, when I
- 49:10Speaker 1: go in an area and I look to set up,
- 49:11Speaker 1: I'm really easing in there. And most of the time
- 49:14Speaker 1: I don't have a set tree. You know, there's a
- 49:18Speaker 1: there's some occasions where there's one tree you gotta be
- 49:20Speaker 1: and we all know that. WHI there's a lot of
- 49:22Speaker 1: places where there's several trees you'd be in and I'm
- 49:25Speaker 1: basing it on that the exact wind that day, or
- 49:28Speaker 1: you know, or where I think the thermal is gonna
- 49:30Speaker 1: pull or that kind of thing something without walking on
- 49:33Speaker 1: the trails and stuff, and I get busted a lot
- 49:35Speaker 1: less by those uh other deer coming through. It still happens,
- 49:38Speaker 1: and uh sometimes it's just down right hard to get
- 49:41Speaker 1: in without spooking the younger deer. But on the other hand,
- 49:46Speaker 1: even the spots that are really difficult, I think if
- 49:50Speaker 1: you're after a certain animal, I think you've gotta go
- 49:52Speaker 1: and hunt those spots or that big buckle just smull
- 49:55Speaker 1: up in there and you'll never go you know what
- 49:57Speaker 1: I mean, You have to you have to throw all
- 49:59Speaker 1: stand up. I heard you talk in in in some
- 50:02Speaker 1: review video I think maybe was that same video I
- 50:04Speaker 1: mentioned earlier you were talking about how, at least in
- 50:07Speaker 1: this situation you were mentioning how you don't like to
- 50:10Speaker 1: do the systematic you know, okay hunting here today and
- 50:14Speaker 1: then get a little bit closer the next time, a
- 50:15Speaker 1: little bit closer, the next time, a little bit closer
- 50:17Speaker 1: the next time. You mentioned how you prefer to either
- 50:20Speaker 1: observe from far back or just go right right for
- 50:22Speaker 1: the kill. Um, is that is that right? And then
- 50:25Speaker 1: can you can you elaborate on that a little bit?
- 50:27Speaker 1: I think that's to relate to what we're talking about
- 50:28Speaker 1: here a little bit. Yeah, I I totally agree with that. UM.
- 50:33Speaker 1: I think if you kind of um uh as people say,
- 50:37Speaker 1: hunt your way in. UM. If you if you do
- 50:40Speaker 1: that on a buck bed and you you know, you
- 50:45Speaker 1: spot and then you move up a hundred yards or something,
- 50:47Speaker 1: it's like to me part of my friends was slapping
- 50:50Speaker 1: him on the ass and saying, game on. You know,
- 50:52Speaker 1: you tell them you're hunting them. UM. I used the
- 50:56Speaker 1: term hunt my way in. I probably should refrain from
- 50:59Speaker 1: saying in that, but I'm certain areas that are narrow
- 51:02Speaker 1: sometimes I hunt my way in, but I'm hunt a
- 51:03Speaker 1: different binary every day. You know what I mean? To
- 51:05Speaker 1: hunt warm bedinry and to ease your way in. I
- 51:08Speaker 1: think you're telling them you're hunting umber. And one thing
- 51:12Speaker 1: about a mature buck. If you want to kill him,
- 51:14Speaker 1: you want to catch him by sure, in utter surprise.
- 51:18Speaker 1: You don't want him to know he's being hunted, or
- 51:20Speaker 1: he'll become real nocturnal, real cagey, and real hard to kill.
- 51:25Speaker 1: That makes sense, That makes sense. Yeah, Dan, I got
- 51:30Speaker 1: a question for you, UM related to difficulty of hunting. UM,
- 51:35Speaker 1: do you find um, which of these two situations. Do
- 51:41Speaker 1: you find harder to hunt small private parcels that might
- 51:46Speaker 1: have a few more mature bucks running around, or large
- 51:51Speaker 1: public parcels with you know, less good bucks, more hunting,
- 51:55Speaker 1: fresh air, but a lot more room to maneuver. Well, well,
- 51:59Speaker 1: obviously there's a lot of cash. Twenty two is to
- 52:01Speaker 1: that question. But I guess generally, generally, I would say
- 52:06Speaker 1: the bigger property, um, because I can hunt that animal
- 52:09Speaker 1: down without the worry of kicking him off the property. Um.
- 52:14Speaker 1: I've got information on like like those like those suburban
- 52:17Speaker 1: areas where you got five acres or something. It's like, really,
- 52:20Speaker 1: you got one spot you can hunt? You don't to me,
- 52:22Speaker 1: that's one hunt, you know. Um, But those bigger properties, um,
- 52:26Speaker 1: you know that the property by me, I mean it's uh,
- 52:28Speaker 1: the one right behind my house is like I think
- 52:31Speaker 1: it's close to three thousand acres of swamp and I
- 52:36Speaker 1: can probably near a dunt of twelve spots that a
- 52:39Speaker 1: giant bucklebean, if he's in the swamp, he'll be one
- 52:41Speaker 1: of those twelve spots. Um. There's a lot more better
- 52:44Speaker 1: areas than that. But the mature box seem to take
- 52:46Speaker 1: these core, you know, primary areas over and uh, you know,
- 52:52Speaker 1: you know, then you can can't hunt down here. If
- 52:54Speaker 1: I got a spot, I can't hunt. I can't get
- 52:57Speaker 1: in here and kill that deer. I mean it's just
- 52:59Speaker 1: two and possibly can't get by a quiet you know
- 53:02Speaker 1: you've got a bulletproof set up. I'll just go into
- 53:05Speaker 1: walk in your and kick him out and then hold
- 53:06Speaker 1: them in one of the other spots. Um, I'll walk
- 53:09Speaker 1: through there to three days in rows so he doesn't
- 53:10Speaker 1: want to bed there. Um. But you can't do that
- 53:13Speaker 1: in the small properties. You really got to act, you know,
- 53:16Speaker 1: light footed and go and you know at the right time.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I think it's really about timing if you've got a
- 53:21Speaker 1: small property. Yeah, okay, hey Dan, Um, So you've talked
- 53:26Speaker 1: about you know, obviously you're focus and I guess all
- 53:30Speaker 1: of our focus we all would you know, ideally want
- 53:32Speaker 1: to kill that five and six year old bucks. But
- 53:36Speaker 1: there's times, you know, in places maybe where we lower
- 53:40Speaker 1: our standards a little bit, at least I know I do.
- 53:42Speaker 1: And you've talked about it, Um, can you share some
- 53:45Speaker 1: of those places or times where you know it might
- 53:49Speaker 1: be a situation where you lower your standards a little bit? Um?
- 53:53Speaker 1: And why you why you might do that. Well, I
- 53:56Speaker 1: do them public land a little bit, especially if I
- 54:00Speaker 1: if I don't have any leaves on something really big.
- 54:02Speaker 1: I mean, if I'm on something big, I'm not shooting
- 54:03Speaker 1: nothing little. Um. But um, you know, um, I've killed
- 54:09Speaker 1: two year old bucks out here that are and uh,
- 54:13Speaker 1: that's a big buck to most people. You know. Um,
- 54:15Speaker 1: And it's nice to me. But I see a lot
- 54:19Speaker 1: of people. I'm changing your question a little here, but
- 54:22Speaker 1: I see a lot of people. You know, they want
- 54:26Speaker 1: to kill a deer. They want to be a big
- 54:29Speaker 1: buck hunter, but they want to kill a deer so
- 54:31Speaker 1: to get into these bad habits of hunting deer. And
- 54:34Speaker 1: for me, no matter what your what your standard is,
- 54:38Speaker 1: you've got to target mature bucks in order to kill
- 54:41Speaker 1: mature bucks. I mean, you can target little bucks and
- 54:44Speaker 1: you'll kill little bucks, but you're can killing big bucks.
- 54:46Speaker 1: Targeting little bucks you have to get lucky. But you
- 54:49Speaker 1: can hut big bucks and still get a little I
- 54:52Speaker 1: don't mean little, but I mean you know, like a
- 54:54Speaker 1: nice two year old or three year old. You can
- 54:57Speaker 1: get those by you know, hunting dollars. But you're not
- 55:00Speaker 1: gonna kill ma sture bucks unless you hunt the sure,
- 55:02Speaker 1: bucks just a different animal. Yeah right, yeah, and that
- 55:09Speaker 1: that's a good that's a good question. The um, they
- 55:14Speaker 1: you got this younger, newer hunter who wants to do that,
- 55:19Speaker 1: but they don't have necessarily many year under their belt
- 55:24Speaker 1: at all. At what point is there any advice you
- 55:27Speaker 1: can give them? How do they know when they're ready to,
- 55:31Speaker 1: you know, go after a big buck versus I mean, yeah,
- 55:34Speaker 1: it's all well and good to hold out their big buck,
- 55:36Speaker 1: but if they're easy tag soup every year and not
- 55:38Speaker 1: getting any experience making the kill, which we all know
- 55:41Speaker 1: is really important. You know, I would ever tell somebody
- 55:44Speaker 1: how to hunt or what to do or how they
- 55:47Speaker 1: should be. But I would recommend that young hunters that
- 55:50Speaker 1: want to be good buck hunters don't pass your biggest
- 55:54Speaker 1: book because you see that a little bit. You don't
- 55:57Speaker 1: where guys a little buck goal because they think they
- 55:59Speaker 1: got to do better because your friends are doing better
- 56:01Speaker 1: or something. If your biggest buck, I'd never I'd never
- 56:04Speaker 1: recommend somebody let that go. You gotta get some killing
- 56:06Speaker 1: under your belt in order to be a good hunter.
- 56:09Speaker 1: And I've noticed that a lot of the newer generations
- 56:11Speaker 1: starting out nowadays. Uh, um, they're trying to hold out
- 56:14Speaker 1: for big bucks, and they're talking like they're big buck
- 56:17Speaker 1: hunters before they're killing anything, and I think they're missing
- 56:20Speaker 1: out on a lot of the hunting. I mean, all
- 56:23Speaker 1: the guys I know that are great hunters, and you
- 56:25Speaker 1: can time to come wrong with you guys, Joe and Andy,
- 56:29Speaker 1: but all the guys I know that are great hunters
- 56:31Speaker 1: like us. And I don't know where you started, but
- 56:34Speaker 1: you probably started like I did, telling a lot of deer.
- 56:37Speaker 1: That's what made us who we are, and then we
- 56:41Speaker 1: started slowly adapting into the big box. And I think
- 56:45Speaker 1: these younger people want to start out right away killing
- 56:47Speaker 1: big bucks. And you've gotta learn how to kill animals
- 56:49Speaker 1: and what to do when the deer walks by, and
- 56:51Speaker 1: how to act win to pull a ball, and all
- 56:54Speaker 1: that stuff that you really can't learn reading about we're
- 56:57Speaker 1: hearing about you have to go do and trying to
- 57:00Speaker 1: learn how to kill a big buck is not only
- 57:02Speaker 1: standing underneath your spand yeah, yeah, that's definitely. I mean
- 57:08Speaker 1: my first buck with another and then I shot a
- 57:10Speaker 1: four core, and you know, and then I shot a
- 57:12Speaker 1: couple more little bucks, and then I shot four or
- 57:14Speaker 1: five two year old and you know, it was a
- 57:16Speaker 1: while before you know, and and the you know, i'nfortunate
- 57:20Speaker 1: to live in a state you know, in Iowa that
- 57:22Speaker 1: you know most how dream about and the most the
- 57:26Speaker 1: bast I don't know. The first gunman, Big Bucks that
- 57:29Speaker 1: I saw, I didn't have a chance in hell killing him.
- 57:33Speaker 1: You know, I was a rap. All right. We need
- 57:37Speaker 1: to take another quick break here, this time to think
- 57:40Speaker 1: our partners at White Tailed Properties, and today I want
- 57:43Speaker 1: to plug another one of their land Beat YouTube videos
- 57:46Speaker 1: that I think many of you are going to find helpful.
- 57:48Speaker 1: This one similar to the last video I mentioned a
- 57:51Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago, which features again my friend Ben
- 57:54Speaker 1: Harshein discussing habitat and terrain funnels. And again here he
- 57:58Speaker 1: uses maps and drone footage and on the ground tour
- 58:02Speaker 1: to help you see exactly what these pinch points look like.
- 58:05Speaker 1: So he just describes a different couple examples in this
- 58:08Speaker 1: video which help out in addition to what he shared
- 58:10Speaker 1: in the last one. This episode is titled identifying Funnels
- 58:14Speaker 1: on the Map using maps to scout and find great
- 58:17Speaker 1: stand locations. Definitely recommend checking this one out. It's a
- 58:20Speaker 1: great visualization to help you understand how to identify these
- 58:23Speaker 1: types of locations that can be so dynamite during the run.
- 58:27Speaker 1: And just to reiterate, you can find these on the
- 58:29Speaker 1: white Tail Properties YouTube channel within their land beat video series,
- 58:33Speaker 1: and if you want to learn more about white Tail
- 58:35Speaker 1: Properties in general, you can visit white Tail properties dot com.
- 58:40Speaker 1: Speaking speaking of speaking of newer hunters, um and some
- 58:45Speaker 1: of the mistakes or some of the things we're seeing
- 58:46Speaker 1: them do. What about this, Dan, I imagine you've seen
- 58:50Speaker 1: a lot of people come through the Hunting Beast forum
- 58:53Speaker 1: and read about what you guys are doing and start
- 58:55Speaker 1: trying it themselves, and they're sharing their experiences on the
- 58:58Speaker 1: forum talking about their and see after you year, when
- 59:01Speaker 1: you read about all the other guys that are trying
- 59:04Speaker 1: to hunt this kind of quote unquote beast style, what's
- 59:07Speaker 1: the what's the biggest mistake or what do you still
- 59:09Speaker 1: see these people doing wrong? Um? Time after time. I
- 59:14Speaker 1: think they think it's too easy. I think they think
- 59:16Speaker 1: they're gonna go out there, learn to sing in a
- 59:18Speaker 1: season and start killing huge books instantly, like they're reading
- 59:22Speaker 1: a manual on how to do it. UM. I think
- 59:26Speaker 1: usually if I watched the readers are watched the guys
- 59:29Speaker 1: that come onto the Beast, you see probably maybe more
- 59:34Speaker 1: than maybe seventy five percent of them stick around for
- 59:37Speaker 1: about a year and you don't hear from again. The
- 59:39Speaker 1: ones that stick around, you don't really see that success
- 59:42Speaker 1: until they've been doing it about three years. And you
- 59:45Speaker 1: always see a cocky, arrogant attitude that they're gonna kill
- 59:49Speaker 1: these books, that they they found these great bed in
- 59:51Speaker 1: areas and they're gonna go out and do it that
- 59:53Speaker 1: first year and they've gotta get slapped in the face
- 59:55Speaker 1: and and learn that it takes a little more and
- 59:57Speaker 1: find it one or two good bed in areas to
- 59:59Speaker 1: do it, and they gotta get pumbled and then come
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: back up, rise up, and try hard and not give up.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: And I see these guys, um just you can withstand
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: that first to or three years. They get to be
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: great hunters after that. Well, you guys think you guys
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: are watching the guys in the Beast. Yeah, i'd have
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to I'd have to agree. It's a um you know,
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: any time any time you're killing deer, like by focusing
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: on their beds and zeering down on your on their
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: bedding area. Yeah, like you mentioned in in some of
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: your earlier DVDs, Like you gotta put in so much
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: time scouting and find so many of the type of
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: beds and the type of set ups and situations that
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: you're looking for that you're trying to fill a whole
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: season with um. So like you know, you can't. You
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: can't go and and scout and find four beds and
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: you know, think you're gonna knock down couple of big
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: ones next year. I mean you literally, I think you
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: you've you you mentioned that you have more beds that
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: you've scouted. You know that you could probably hunt in
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: the rest of your life. But you know, it's it
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: takes a lot of work to kind of build up
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: that that library of setups and places where you can
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: kind of fall back on as you you know, like
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: you said, you you hunt and you you don't see anything.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: You know, you hunt, you know, maybe a seven or
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: eight days straight without seeing a single deer, but you
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: all saw you always have that next spot to kind
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: of fall back on due to your scouting and the
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: amount of time and work you put in. So it's
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: not for the faint of heart, and it's not for
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: the type of person that uh you know is it
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: is not ready to kind of commit um commit to it.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: You know, I think I think guys that maybe can't
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: put in as much time can still find some value
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: um in the in that type of hunting, because you
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: know they might have some some you know, promising setups
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: and betting areas in areas that they hunt that they
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: could focus on. But if you're gonna be a consistent
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: hunter focusing on buck betting, it really takes a lot
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: of commitment and a lot of work in that off
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: season really finding high volume, high numbers of these. At
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: least for me it does, because you know, I tend
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: to I screw up a lot with it, for sure,
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: But you know, you keep you keep at it, You
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: keep fine tuning your setup and your knowledge base. You
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: just get a little bit better at it each time,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: and you kind of you kind of figure out what
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: you can get away with, you know, a little, I
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: get a little closer than this, right, you know that's
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a little too, you know, I need to back off
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: a little. All those things come with experience, and it
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: takes time. Yeah, I think, Dan, what you just what
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: you described as far as an average timeline, and everybody's different,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: and ever how much time you spending on it and
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: different too, but you know, three to five years. Yeah,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it's the three to five year investment before you think,
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: before you there's any chance you think you're you're kind
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: of you know, you know what you're doing. I guess
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: in turns of target and hunting, and but you know,
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: I don't. There's lots of times all of us can't
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: figure it out. You know that there's a lot to
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: to where um, maybe you guys can relate with me,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: But I can go out there and look at something
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: and I don't know how to put it in words,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: but I can look at them say this is gonna
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: be good, or this you don't suck. But it's really
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: hard to teach it to people how to look at
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: something like that three or five years of investment. That's
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: what it takes. You know, Like, like you get the question,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: how do you know where to set up that? You know,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: how do you answer that question? You know you can't,
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: you can't. You know, you can give up some general
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: rules that like you know, some place somewhere, you know
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: you might not be able to get within a hundred
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: yards of a bed. In another place, you might be
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: able to get forty yards from it, you know, right, yeah,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: it all it all comes back to like you might
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: in in you know, like Dan you said, you have
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: trouble putting those situations into words. It's because like all
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: of your experiences, you know, whether we even realize it
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: or not, it's it's always like fine tuning our judgment. Right,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: So let me get into these situations where like, okay,
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: you know, you're you're almost subconsciously you know, I've been
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: through this before. I've been through this situation and this
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: worked and this didn't, and this was too much and
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: this was just enough. And you're you're always fine tuning
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: your judgment, and over time, with a lot of experience,
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: you just start making the right call more often, you know,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: just almost like um, you know, without even really a
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: whole lot of thought, you just feel it. You know,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: you feel it because you've been there before and you've
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: made the mistakes right. And I would say that time,
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: you know, yeah, if someone doesn't have time, they don't
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: have time, But don't I feel bad for the people
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: that just kind of oh it takes that much time
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: and they lose interest and they wander off. Is to me,
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: that's the fun fire, you know, it's the journey you
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: know it. Um, I don't know, maybe a large, a
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: little different, but that's that's what I love is you know,
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: figure and stuff out and yeah you're gonna screw up.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: You're gonna start screwing out, screwing up nine percent at
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the time, and then you're only gonna screw up percent
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: at the time. You know. Yeah, it's fun, you know. Um.
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: I think a big part of it too is uh,
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: blending what they're doing with what we're doing and not
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: jumping in a because I mean, if they're already killing
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: some deer and then you jump in full boat and
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: they see a decline, and I think that's what pushes
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: a lot of people away from it. But if you
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: just start learning how they bed and started putting that
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: into the style you're hunting and slowly go into it,
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I think you'll have more success and it'll just take
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: longer to get a full boat to where we're at.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: We talked about like, okay, beginners, most common mistakes, what's
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: what's the d infalts most the mistakes, and like what
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: in your opinion, I know you're you kind of said,
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: you know, maybe your skill level is kind of tapered
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: off the last few years because you know, maybe the
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: drive isn't quite there. But what would take Dan Infult
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: to the next level? What do you what? What could
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: you improve on? I think, Um, you know, I'm always
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: analyzing um my haunts and uh my seasons and stuff.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Um that's just a natural part of me. And my
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: analyzation of this last season was I didn't shoot enough,
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: I didn't practice enough, and I blew a lot of opportunities.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I think I gotta focus on my practice a little more.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: I think I need to focus on scouting a little
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: more for myself instead others. If I want to be
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: more successful. I think I don't put the time in
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: that I used to, either shooting or scouting. I think
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: last year I had four or five opportunities and I
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: blew every one of them. Do you have like a
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: specific game plan as far as how to address that.
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: Is it just quantity of practice or do you need
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: to Are you changing anything else? As far as I
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: am changing something up this year, Um, I'm finding that
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: my judgment is getting worse. Um where I'm not judging
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: my shot distance. I used to just use one pin
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: in a rangelind or anything. And I'm gonna go with
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: adjustable pin. This you're in a rangefinder for the first time. Okay,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: and then we're about scouting. You mentioned maybe you need
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: to scout some more, and we're alluding to this a
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: little bit earlier, just about how much work it takes
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: to find enough places two hunt in this kind of
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: way because you're going from betting area to betting area
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: and you might blow it up. Um. I think we
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: hear that a lot, but sometimes newer people don't really
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: know what that actual. You know exactly how much that is.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: So what's like the ballpark number that maybe you typically
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: go into a season with Danny? Do you have like
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: forty beds? Do you have two beds? I mean, what
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: what should a new guy be thinking? I have no
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: idea account wise. I mean, there's hundreds and thousands of
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: much guess would blow the way out of the park.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: But um, it's not really about how many bed in areas.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: I know I already got that stuff down me personally.
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: When I'm scouting right now, I'm looking for bucks I
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: learned because I'm a low buck density area, so I
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: want to know where those maketure bucks are so I
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: know where to go after certain animals. So that's a
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: scouting I need to personally, uh key and on. But
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: for other people, I think you need to find as
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: many buck betting areas as you can and have set
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: ups on them, and then you know, you need to
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: monitor those areas and see when there's a buccan area
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: to go in to hunt. I mean we rubb lines
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: open up when you when you see one out of
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: a window that you know the area. Okay, if I'm
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: seeing a buck here, you know, and it's a month
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: season and I'm seeing him in a field just before dark,
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: where is he coming from? And uh that kind of stuff,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: and you already know the area already, have it scouted?
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: Um for got it just has you know, and buck
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: betting areas scouted. It doesn't know a lot about them.
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: That it gets pretty tough. And I think a younger
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: guy or aknewer guy UM should probably concentrate on one
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: property and learn all the bet in that one property first,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: because it's easier to hunt on a property then it
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: is to hunt one spot on each property because there's
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: a good odds to box in some other spot. But
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: if there's a buck on that property and you hunt
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: that property down, you're you're more likely to kill. Yeah,
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: I'm glad you brought that up. Dan. That was I
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: had needed to ask you was if you recommend how
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: you recommend it, somebody start, you know, start and folks
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: learn something really well or spread yourself out. You answer that, thanks, Say, Dan,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: you talked about monitoring these different betting years. Then once
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you find them. One of the ways that I think
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: some people think about monitoring a betting area or a
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: region of a property is with trail cameras. But I
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: heard you talk about last year at least how trail
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: cameras maybe misled you a little bit in that way. Um,
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: is that something that you see happen more often the
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: trail cameras out of hurting you more than they help
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: you in some cases, or or is there a certain
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: way we should be thinking about and make sure they
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: don't well. Cameras can be your best friend or your
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: worst enemy. Um. Do you find people that get addicted
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: to them things in or to putting them in places
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: they shouldn't, then you're checking them all the time, um,
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: you know, or there, or they got them in a
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: spot where they really couldn't kill something anyways, and then
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: they're every time they see something under to change your
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: whole game plan towards it. I think the best thing
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: you can do with the trail cameras. Have you got
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: a bed in area or a rub line that comes
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: out of a bed area and it's a hundred yards
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: back or somewhere a couple hundred yards back, and maybe
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: to have a camera there, um, But I really wouldn't
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: recommend having them where you hunt, unless it's the email
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: type that email you the picture. And even then I
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: put it their way in advance. Yeah, yeah, you gotta,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: you gotta, you gotta get the intel and and use
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: that intael for something. I think a lot of the
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: ways I like to use trail cameras is to put
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: them on a food source, um, always away from betting
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: where it has no impact in the bedding at all,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: and just know it's there's a big buck in that
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: area and that woods, and then I know the betting
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I can go after him. But I think a lot
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: of the younger people or newer people to this uh,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: to this way of hunting, I have to build their
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: confidence up and they have to believe that there's a
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: buck in that betting here, and that's why they put
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: those cameras so close, but I think that's hurting number. Uh.
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: Holy those deer get to be you know, four years
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: old or older and pressured land without knowing that game.
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: When somebody walks inplace, they know I don't go there
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: tomorrow and daylight. Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. Andy, Andy,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: what we're gonna say there? Before I interrupted you, Oh,
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: I was gonna ask Dan, what what type of terrain
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: or habitat do you find the most difficult for you
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: to hunt? Um? H hill country probably Um you get
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: you have a hard time getting close enough. You know,
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: you get below you into normal rise and you get
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: a ball, you get the wind blowing at him. So
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: you gotta find that little niche to get on them.
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: And it's not that I find it really difficult to
- 1:12:03Speaker 1: hunt it. It's just it's it's a struggle, you know,
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: and kind of like it's a little more challenging to me.
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: Sometimes it's funner, but it is a little more challenging
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: to get within that window of killing gear. Um. All
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: the rest of the drains, I think that I get closer.
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: Is there a certain type of hills that we've we've
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: talked a little bit about this other places, certain type
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: of hills that you find the most difficult. You know,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: they range from you know, you have big, great, big
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: steep bluffs in that gentle rolling hill. Um, yeah, for sure,
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: the rolling hills are much harder. The rolling hills are
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: much harder, and especially for scouting, just finding the betting
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: areas in those rolling hills is tough because, um, in
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: the steep bluffs, they're right at the point where that
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: thermal wind meat and a worn in you know, you
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: can seem really well. But in those rolling hills, um,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: they're instantly shift in their beds, so it's hard to tell,
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: you know, if you've been bedding or a lot. You know. Yeah,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: that's what I've seen too. And the deepest hills that's
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: where I find the heaviest, most you know, um defined
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: bet because it's flat out there's less options, I think,
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: you know. Yeah. Another betting question that I that I've
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: wanted to get a little bit more from you on
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Dan is just how betting might change throughout the year.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I've heard you talk a little bit about how it
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: transitions from early season to late season in different types
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: of terrain, but can you can you talk about that
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: a little bit, how that might change and like a
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: hill country situation versus a swamp or farm country type situation. Uh,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: you know, hill country. I see him betting on those
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: uh those leeward ridges all year. Um. Farms and swamps.
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: I see see a little different though, UM Like right now,
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: um going out water on farms and a scull and
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: then glasses and stuff. I'm seeing a lot of them
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: big box are bedding up on the open field, UM,
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: in the in the grass cover, um, right out in
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: the places where they normally don't. And I think it's
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: to get away from the mosquitoes. I don't think they
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: want to be done in that water area. But they
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: seem to be a long ways away from the water
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: right now on um, up in the higher stuff. But
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: once the season comes, they just start moving right back
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: into that stuff. And I'm hitting them right into the
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: same place as I always do. But then early season
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: and finding them around the acorns, you know, and vice verse.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: You starting to follow the routine of the food sources
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: or whatever they're looking for for that time of the year.
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: And one thing I noticed though, um that you can
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: see distinct patterns. So if you hunt a wooden lot
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: like like I think it was Joe was saying earlier,
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: if you hunt one wood lot and learn it, well,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: you just start to see that when you've seen a
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: big box in a certain area, that exact time date,
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: time frame right down to the week, is when you
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: should be hunting that area in the next year. It's
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: not a coincidence. I don't think there's a big Bucks
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: to do anything on coincidence. So there's like food patterns
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: and timing patterns they moved through an area. Do you
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: see that change as a buckets older at Although if
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: you ever have a buck that you've seen maybe a
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: couple of years in a row, do you see that? Um?
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: You know, some people talk about how these home ranges
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: tend to get tighter and tighter and tighter as these
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: bucks get older and older. Anything anything else like that
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: I can say about older box is this is that
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: And this will probably strike a few people wrong, but
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: it's really what I've I've observed, and I believe I
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: think older bucks are easier to hunt, and the reason
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: being is they get locked into those primary better areas,
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: just hold up there and stay there, and they're hard
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: to kick out. You kick them out to come right
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: back in where those younger bucks seem to you kick
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: them out, they moved to another spot. Um. But those
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: older bocks seem to really find an area where hardly
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: anybody goes, and they just stay there and they're harder
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: to push out of that area. Um. And they'll move
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: further for food, you know, they'll during the night, they'll
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: go to a food source or whatever. And is that
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: do you think that's just because they they found something
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: that works for them and it's kept them alive for
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: so long, and now they're they're setting that way like
- 1:16:14Speaker 1: this has worked for me for five years? Why change
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: it out? It's hard for It's hard for me to
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: tell you what the books thinking. But uh, I don't
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: know if it's through experiences. I don't you know, I
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: don't know what causes it. But I see that in
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: in not only on pressured private I see it on
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: on the managed stuff I've hunted and help people with
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: two let's see the same thing. Yeah, Well, what's I'm
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: curious to you know, I look up to Joel and
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: Andy a lot. I'm curious that they've seen that same
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: type of behavior. Yeah, I I have definitely, and I like,
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: you know, living where I do, I am very fortunate
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: older deer and once that bockheads five six years old,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: they've become very very patternable. Now those patterns aren't easy
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: by any means, but if you're you know, on your game,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: once you find them. I've I've come into run into
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: a lot of bucks where they are they make their
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: home and a woodlock or one small drainage and they're
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: in forty eight acres. It seems like if you think
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: about it now, most of your hunters are on a
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: pattern of rotating through steams and they never move up
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: the pattern. They'll get them. You know, they don't go mobile,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: and you've got to go mobile and go find it.
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: There's pattern in order to kill. Yeah, and it's those
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: areas that they find they are never hunted. You know,
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: they're they're there there. You know, they speak out these
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: areas because for whatever reason, people aren't you hunting it.
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: You know, we've gotten the edges or whatever where they're
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: actually button. Nobody ever goes. It's a really small area
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: when you find that. You know, the proprobial overlook spot. Yeah,
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: what about you, Andy? Yeah? Yeah, I have I have
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: seen that too, Like the buck, uh that buck I
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: killed last year. Um, that's a perfect explanation, um, of
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: of how I killed that dear. You know, he just
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: I it took me three years to get him, but um,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: it just really kept fine tuning UM and what he
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: was seeing. Um, he was seen in some areas that
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: were kind of quite a ways away from where I
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: had killed him, and he had been shot at a
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: few times. So I had some different guys around the area,
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: and he really ended up just zeroing into this little
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: tiny corner along this river corridor, and uh, you know,
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I mean he spent you know, as far as I
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: could tell, UM. You know, he was spending the majority
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: of his time there, and I was getting a couple
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: of pictures UM of him, and he was always kind
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: of coming and going, always coming that coming from that direction,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: going back. And uh it really because I because I
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: come to know that buck really well. It became a
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: pretty straightforward set up on how to get him. I
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: just had the time it right, and you know, on
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: a day where he was moving in daylight and that
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: sort of thing. So and I would point out, even
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: though they're in a small area, does not mean they're
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: visible there there. They are often just about the individible,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: you know, they're not walking in front of where you
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: normally put your tree. If you put a trail camera
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: on a certain tree every single year and check it,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: you know regularly, they may be an area and they
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: just know not to walk in front of your camera,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: you know, or you know they're not walking by your stand,
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: but they might be. You know, you might be regularly
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: hut in the stand and that buck might be bet
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: in two hundred yards away and he knows you're there,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: He knows you're regularly there, and he just never will
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: show himself just because you don't see every not there.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: You're like, you're you know, hunting nor always you know,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: the same old stand, all that kind of thing. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: what else do you got, Joe? Any other questions top
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: of mind for you? Um? One question I got for you, Dan,
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: is you know, if you could give yourself a piece
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: of advice, uh, you know from you know, if you
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: could give yourself a piece of advice thirty years ago,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: what would it be in terms of just hunting in general,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: like maybe how to or how not to? You know what,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: what would have helped you the most? If you could
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: tell yourself a thirty year younger version of yourself something. Jeez,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: I know there will be a lot. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: It's probably be something to do with family, uh, you know,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: and how I spend my time. I was, as we
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: alluded to earlier, I was a pretty obsessed with hunting
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: back then. So basically you know that now you're talking
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: a little bit or yeah, I worry a little bit
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: more about work, about family, about my kids. Unlike you guys,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: I had kids early. I think I think the biggest
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: one for me was I put a lot of pressure
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: on my middle son, who, um it was the only
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: one that really liked hunting, and I think I pressured
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: him right out of liking it, you know. Um. To me, Um,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: I liked the working hunting, you know, the the hyke
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: back three miles in a swamp with us standing and
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: set up. But I really never thought about him not
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: liking that part of it. And I think I pushed
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: him a little too hard. Um. You know, Uh, I
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: think I would rather have made it more fun for him.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: You know. I think back to my younger days, or
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: all my days for that matter. The hunts I remember
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: the most aren't those giant bucks. I killed the ones
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: that that that remember the most of my first book,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: the first year with the bulb, but times chasing those
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: deer around just having fun where it was just trying
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: to kill a deer. Um. And I think, you know,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: my son missed that a little bit. Uh. He shot
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: three bucks in his life, and I think the smallest
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: one scores about one ten or one point. He's never
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: shot a dough um, So I think I kind of
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: pushed him into missing some of that, you know. And yeah,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: that's that's interesting to hear. It's something I've been thinking
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: about a lot about myself too, with um, with my
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: first son being born. He's just six months old now,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: and so I'm I'm thinking a lot about how do
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: you go about introducing a child to the outdoors and
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: hunting and how do you you know, to your point, Dan,
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: I could see myself doing the same thing. I'm so
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: excited about. I'm so passionate about it, so hardcore about it,
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: that how do I temper that down to to work,
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: you know, to still have fun for him and to
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: to not overwhelm him. Um, that seems like something could
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: easily happen, right. You gotta remember he's not you, you know,
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: I wanted Jamie to be me you know, I wanted
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: to be like me and be who I was, and
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: I don't think that's realistic. And you know, I think
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: a lot of people will probably criticize me for talking
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: about that, but it's you know, it's true, and I
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: think it will probably help somebody else by saying yeah, no,
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: I agree. Yeah, I appreciate you bringing that up. And
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: I thought about that as well with my kids. You know,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: how to how to bring him into nothing. But I'm
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: so passionate about but I do worry about burning about Yeah,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: I kinda want to flip that a little bit. Dan. Now,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: so you being so hardcore about it, you being so
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: obsessed with things maybe ended up being a detriment when
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: it came to introducing hunting to your to your family
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: with your son um. But now I want to talk
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: about the the intangible things about you that have made
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: you so successful. What if you could put your finger
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: on any trait or habit or routine or some intangible
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: thing but what you do or who you are, Is
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: there anything you can point to on that level that
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: do you think has led to your success? Has it
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: just been that hard core nature or is there something else?
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: I'll tell you that that this is gonna sound horrible,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: but it's true that the number one thing with me
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: is is that cocky, arrogant belief that I'm gonna kill
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: a bug. It's mental power. You have to believe in yourself.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: If you really believe you're gonna do it, Um, you'll
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: go out and you'll do the job. You'll do the work,
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: you'll do that you know, you'll push yourself that far.
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: Um And I think a lot of people that fail
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: it's it's because of their mind. I don't think it's
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: because they necessarily know that much less. I think the
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: difference between maybe um Me and Indian and Joe and
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: some of the newer guys on the site isn't really
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: the knowledge, because I think it's all pretty much out there.
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: I think a lot of it's the experience and the
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: belief in ourselves. I think, uh, I go out there
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: just believe in that I'm gonna do it. I think
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: every time I go into wood, I believe I'm gonna
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: kill that deerham after, you know, I believe that's the
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: day I'm gonna kill him. And when I don't, I
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: get up the next morning to go out there just
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: as happy, still believe and I'm gonna kill that deer
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: that day. Do you think that is just is that
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: just a personality trait? Or is that actually because you've
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: put in so much time and effort and work and scouting,
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: you have so much experience that you realistically do have
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: that confidence because of all that skills that you have already,
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: or is both? Yeah, I don't think you can buy
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: that experience and and I don't think you can teach
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: that experience. I think it's I think it's about putting on,
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: you know, pile of bucks on the wall that you
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: you just start to believe that this works. You know,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it. And and I believe in my setups,
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: I believe in my scouting, and I think it's gonna work.
- 1:25:47Speaker 1: Every time I go out there, I really believe that
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: this is the spot that book is going to be
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: better than, and this is where he's gonna come out.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: And if I didn't have that belief, I probably wouldn't
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: get up to you out there. And I think that's
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: why a lot of other people fail. I think it's
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: why they leave early, why they lacking confidence. And the
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: only way you can get that is to go out
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: there and kill some bucks and build that confidence up. Yeah. Yeah,
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: a lot of times it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy too.
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: You know, you kind of alluded to it. If you
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: don't have confidence in your setup or your strategy when
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: you're sitting out there, if you're not confident, you're maybe
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: not paying as much attention, or you're not willing to
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: stay till the very last minute, or you're not willing
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: to get out there two hours before dark because you
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: and well it's probably not gonna work out anyway. So
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: lots of times just that confidence will push you or
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: will allow you to do the things you know you
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: need to do. Um, you know you need just that.
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: I mean, you're on the stand, I'm listening, I'm watching,
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: I'm hearing things in the distance. I'm looking for movement
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: and stuff. But I think other people, you know, are
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: sitting or daydream and things are are going on if
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: they're not even noticing. And and I know that's little,
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: but I think the differences between a great hunter and
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: an okay hunter is little things. You know, It's you
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: know a lot of those little things add up and
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: that's what makes you successful. Yeah yeah, yeah, your mindset
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: huge you know when you're when you're thinking about, you know,
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: what might be going wrong. Um, if you just about guarantee,
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: you're gonna screw it up. I've been in situations where
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: you know, uh, you know, I have a coming in
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: earlier in my career and I would there's no way
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: I can screw this up. You know, I don't know
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: that you have that mindset, then you're gonna screw it up.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: So got the stories to prove it once. But you
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: know when it comes when you see a deer and
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: you think I'm going to kill that dear, you're gonna
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: kill it? Is there is there anything, Joe, that you
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: could point to if I were to take that question.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: I just gave it to Dan and point that back
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: to you. Do you have any any other intangible quality
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: or routine or habit or mindset other than we just
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: talked about that has that's helped you? Yeah? And I
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: think you know, I'm kind of a student of observing
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: people's personality, so I think this fits to Dan as well. Um,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: we're persistent, and that is I don't know if you
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: want to say it's learned or it comes natural, that's statable,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: I guess, But you gotta be persistent, and you gotta
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: you know that. That's how we can go out there
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: again and again and fail and keep going and keep
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: believing in it is your persistent and you don't get
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: burned out in a way of you know, that negative
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: self talk that really takes you down. You just you
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: just you know, that's a really good point. You know,
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: I've never seen somebody that's been successful beast talking. That's lazy.
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: You try to have a strong work ethic. I mean,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: you gotta like the work, wouldn't you when you drink? Yeah, exactly.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: You gotta love the work. That's that's that's how you
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: sum it up. You gotta love the work. You gotta
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: love sweating your butt off and out, you know, a
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: mile and mile out, two miles and two miles out.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: You gotta want to you got to want to drag
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: that buck out two miles. You know everybody, you know
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: they went to somebody asked, so, I don't you know
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: it isn't that too far? Well, yeah, that's probably just
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: not for you. Then if you're worried about how far
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: the drag is gonna be, you know, right, you know,
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: you hear all those people say, well, I'd never shoot
- 1:29:17Speaker 1: a buck in that spot because of how far but
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: draggedd is. Or I wouldn't even hunt there because of
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: that you actually for you guys, But I've never ever
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: thought about how I'm gonna gear out until it's dead.
- 1:29:29Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, exactly What about you, Andy, what's your
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: intangible that you would add? Um? Yeah, I mean I'd
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: go right along with what both Dan and Joe said.
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: I think, you know, I'm just I'm extremely thorough like
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: with my scouting. So I think I mentioned this before,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: but like you know, and I know Joe does this,
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: but I'm I'm thorough enough in my scouting where it
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: would almost have to be some you know, really really
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: bad luck, extremely bad luck for me to not at
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: least have some success. So I don't like leaving a
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: lot of things to chance. Um So, and I love
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: the preparation. I love the scouting even you know, even
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: more than the hunt in a lot of times, a
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: lot of ways. So I'm just extremely thorough with with
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: all of that. Just to kind of put I think
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: that just kind of puts all the odds in my favor,
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: at least enough of the odds in my favor. Um.
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: But then I have like this, I don't know, I
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: have this like constant drive to improve, like not to
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: be the best hunter. I don't care about that, but
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: I have to be. I always have to be improving
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: with the things that I'm passionate about. And I don't
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: know why that is, but like being stagnant in anything
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: that I'm really passionate about, it like it almost makes
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: me ill. I get anxiety about it. It's weird, but
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: I just I constantly have to be improving about the
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: you know, with the things that I'm passionate about, only
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: about you know, a couple of a couple of things.
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: So that that's why those tend to get you know,
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: the majority of my time. Yeah, yeah, that If I
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: feel uncertain about something, it drives me not. I hate that.
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: And then I think, you know, you know, you know,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: you guys sound like you guys know what I mean.
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: You know, like if I how to hunt of property,
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: it drives me not and I'm gonna keep going back,
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: keep going back, being figured, trying to figure it out.
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: It's funny how similar we are, the three of us.
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: You hear with all the different people I talked to
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: over the years through the podcast, there are definitely. These
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: all these intangibles you just mentioned, they're the same things
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: that come up for almost every single person. And these
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: all these different people. They might hunt in totally different ways.
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: Some guys don't hunt at all, like you Dan, or
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: you and your Joe, but they still have these core
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: kind of pieces parts of like who they are that
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: seems to be consistent across all you guys and many
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: of the other best hunters out there. So it's it's
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: almost like if you have these core things, if you're persistent,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: if you're willing to care about the little things, if
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: you're willing to to put in an unbelievable amount of
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: time and effort and energy and keep that positive attitude,
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: if you can do those things, you'll eventually find the
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: style of hunting that works for you. Um, but those
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: things are the keys that seems to be very consistent. Yeah,
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: that's that's one of the reasons why I learned, and
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: maybe I'll change as I gained maturity as a hunter.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: But I try to not go after one particular block
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: because it just consumes me to the point I'll wake
- 1:32:36Speaker 1: up at two am and stare at the ceiling for
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: three hours thinking about that darned dear. You know, so
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: I try not to, I really, you know, I try
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: to keep that under control. So and everybody's different, you know,
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: but it's just a quirk. Yeah, Joe or Andy, do
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: either you guys have any other any other big ones
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: we want to run by Dan? Uh No, I don't
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: have any more questions for Dan, but I do want
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: to say something to him. I don't know, are we
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: are we ending this thing? Yeah? Yeah, I think maybe
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: maybe kind of concluded here. I've got I've got kind
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: of one more question, but but yeah, if you want
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: to conclude with some thoughts, Andy, that'd be good. Well,
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: it's more of a I guess I thank you. Um.
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: I just wanted to say thank you to Dan because
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: you know, he's someone that I look up to. I
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: never had I never had a mentor, you know, like
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: nobody got me into hunting. I actually started archery and
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: then uh I was you know, decent at archery, and
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: people are like, oh, that's kind of how I started hunting. Um.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: So you know the people that were mentors, you know,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: I learned a lot with trial and there, but Dan
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: was certainly like one of my mentors. Um for sure,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: I've learned a ton from him. You know, he's never
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: I respect him a ton. He's never really sought out,
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: notari pushed products and actually tries to steer you know,
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: the guys that the Hunting Beast away from him, you know,
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: and he's super generous with his time and his information
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: for I mean, how many years, how many years has
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: he been doing this? It's you know, it's amazing. So
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: he just has like a natural, nonsense way of teaching
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: and explaining things, something that I think doesn't come so
- 1:34:21Speaker 1: natural to me. Like for him, he's just really easy
- 1:34:23Speaker 1: to listen to and it just comes off real naturally.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: And I think he'll you know, I really think he's
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: going to go down as one of the great real
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: world hunters. And I know that's not a big deal
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: to him, but you know, because of the the commitment
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: um you know, the long longevity and the willingness to
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: share and teach. So you know, I just I'm really
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: thankful and like on behalf of everyone listening and the
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: guys that Hunting Beasts, I just want to say thank you.
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: I completely agree and your role Bottle, I will flat
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: out says, you know, have taught me a lot and
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: how to conduct myself. I feel like and I think
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: that points on them. Well, absolutely, you know, I kind
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: of look up to you guys too. I think you
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: guys are some of the top guys on the site.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: I mean you to talk. I always listen, So so
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: then I'll wrap it up. I'll wrap it up with
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: this stand. Um, We've asked you a lot of questions.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: You get thousands of questions on the Beast, You get
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: all sorts of questions from other people on all these
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: different podcasts and people interviewing you for all these different things.
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: Is there any question that you haven't been asked yet
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: that you wish you had not that? I can think
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: of people asking the craziest questions like what favorite ice
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: cream is? With car I drive? And sometimes there's nothing
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: that you've really wanted to talk about that no one
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: ever and never ends up diving into huh No I do.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: I do feel like most podcasts, um, I mean, it's
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: guys that don't Beast Hunt, so they don't ask the
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: right questions and it's just the same stuff over and
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: over again. I really like the format you had on
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: this one, and this is really cool. It was it
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: was a good idea you had Um. I think we've
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: got some good stuff off there. People like this? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: I definitely enjoyed it too. What's your favorite my favorite
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: venison recipe? Um, A couple of sticks of butter and
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: some chopped up uh venison in a lot of vegetables.
