- 0:00Vice presents Delisleigh, Sylvia, Courridge and Mormon Bird In Is there anybody there
- 0:07by? William Ingram, Vincent Price, Hello and welcome in Arcady Avenue.
- 0:15The houses have names as well as numbers, Changri, lah Dun Roman more
- 0:22reposed, they best sum up the avenue's air of nostalgic gentility. Still in
- 0:28the early thirties, all is very discreetly orthodox, from the privacy of private
- 0:34hedge and lace curtains at the front to the squares of handkerchief size lawn at
- 0:40the back. In later years, however, professional name plates have appeared on
- 0:46several of the front gate posts. Brigadoon now houses Chetney, Chetney and Chetney
- 0:52Accountants. Higher up the avenue there is an establishment for the fitting of ladies
- 0:58foundation garments. But it is to the recently renamed Celestina that our attention must
- 1:06finally turn. The first thing one notices is that its brass name plate is
- 1:11somewhat grimier than the others. It pronounces Miss Griselda Thorpe to be medium and
- 1:19clairvoyant. Consultations and ministrations strictly by appointment only every Wednesday afternoon, promptly at
- 1:27three of the clock mister Henry Jollett climbs the gravel pass, presses the front
- 1:34door bell button and anticipates at the going rate of one guinea procession. Yet
- 1:41another preview of eternity. Oh, my dear mister jollit, miss I trust
- 1:49I'm not preva your no, no, no, quite the contrary punctus the
- 1:55very second as usual punctuality, my dear mister Jolly, the prerogative of kings
- 2:01in my books whatever or anybody else's for that matter. Ed, yes,
- 2:07good, ever stop catching blue bottles, assist me with the sacres pendant.
- 2:14Yes, to tell that I I I can't quite single and thumbs fingers and
- 2:21thumbs there, mister jobet drill as before, if you please you there in
- 2:28the hot seat, thank you. I shall sit here with my back to
- 2:31the window. Better for vibes and less chance of spiritual dispersion, don't you
- 2:38know? And ed you ed? Where have you got to ye there?
- 2:44And being here all along? Really, I I don't want you here,
- 2:49dear. I want you there in the third chair. Of course, how
- 2:53is the leaning there? You can begin now, gidel, thank you dear.
- 3:05We will join hands in a circle of eternal light and harmony. What
- 3:12you want is a gemantic woman for Heaven's sake, hands harmony. The man's
- 3:15not a flack fish. Yes, because peace, perfect peace, peace,
- 3:34perfect peace. Peace. It's starting, judge it mm hmm, you can
- 3:47always tell when it started? Are you there? Are you the O mighty
- 3:55uncle a pack Emperor of the inkor beloved of the song less spirit guide?
- 4:03You know I have had the pleasure, O mighty one, use the only
- 4:12bodies, he said, Speak speak the design manco Kappac, Emperor of the
- 4:30inter he loved of the Sun, God, living God in conist God of
- 4:35the infinite. Of this is where I have breathing gafts heavier. You'll see,
- 4:46speak, Oh, manco Kappak, Emperor of your people's spirit, guide
- 4:53to less immortals bound in bonds of common clay above the land of Cusco.
- 5:02The condor fly high in search of the lamb that has trained. Oh dear
- 5:09hour, do you fly fallow? Our storehouses empty? The living sea of
- 5:15Provice has burnt itself to high. I don't like the flounder that talk in
- 5:23my people. Prepare clime o climb thy temple mountain, annoying to sacred auctions
- 5:34with a human sacrifice. See, oh see where the living God of the
- 5:44orb, the chariot of the Sun, things gold upon this holy place.
- 5:51Raise high the sacred blade. The time of the living Blood is upon us.
- 5:58The time is now, Oh Edie love days reading and passed, mister
- 6:16Johnick, the last of those chocolate guy, go in, thank you.
- 6:23Oh well, heady to the top. I'll have it the ed. While
- 6:28you're on your feet, you can put Kapacks sacred pendant back in the casket
- 6:30where it belongs. The beautiful, isn't it, mister Jollick. Beautiful,
- 6:39quite beautiful. I'd let you take a closer, but I don't think the
- 6:44old boy would go for that. Even letting Edie get her chocolatesy little falls
- 6:47on it is stretching the point. But at least in the family if you'll
- 6:51take my reading, of course, oh at least let me top you up.
- 6:58I beg a boy. Oh no, no, thank you, most
- 7:00kind, downhearted. I don't blame you. Three wednesdays in a row and
- 7:09still no contact with the dear departed day not yet good. The Emperor did
- 7:16seem to have rather a lot on his mind. Oh still, if he
- 7:24doesn't pull his finger out soon you'll be asking for your money back, dear
- 7:27lady never entered my mind. Odd, so uh don't have many famous do
- 7:32we eat the old thing first? Back? And then if you're dear departed
- 7:39wife lent vild quite well, old man ko kapack can usually be relied upon
- 7:47to winkle them out, not that they be much persuading needed, mind you,
- 7:53or put yourself in violens place light being told of a long distance fronk
- 7:58all not even bothering to find out who's on the other end. I've never
- 8:01quite thought of it in that life. I wonder what light you had thought
- 8:07of it in, mister Jolly. I noticed you've been admiring my sister's posterit,
- 8:13mister Johnet h Oh, yes, yes, sir, I'd rather caught
- 8:18my eye. Splendid, isn't it? Edy? Oh? But it is
- 8:22with hand to hear such an excellent likeness, give or take twenty years of
- 8:28such fire such expression indeed, clear Patrick, don't you know? Really?
- 8:35Not the old rick, mister Johnet Simsbury Park Empire what they call in the
- 8:41business a bum week. Not the title role either, though that's clearly the
- 8:46impression my sister wishes to do. The Tara geta trusted and rather boring handsmaiden
- 8:56to the queen. Don't you know she's the one that brings that all rub
- 9:00a snake on At the end, the trickiest part was getting the name right
- 9:05for Tatatita. I still have nightmares painted by a fellow ar teeth. It's
- 9:11joy better at painting than acting. But then everybody in the company seemed better
- 9:16at something than acting. Of course I had realized your background was probably theatrical.
- 9:24Only probably my dear man sag understatement that the ham of all hands always
- 9:33was, always will be why I eventually had the good sense to give it
- 9:37up anyway, twenty years on water under the bridge, and shure you must
- 9:41have better things to do than go for pathetic shortcomings of an aspiring Sarah Bernhart.
- 9:48How interesting, mister Johnett, How very interesting twenty years you did say,
- 9:56twenty years give or take. Why do you ask the paintings You're already
- 10:01wearing the sacred pendant? Am I er uh oh yes, yes, so
- 10:09I am oh sorry. Griselda's feeling of being caught out did not escape either
- 10:16Ed's or mister Jnads noticed. To begin with Griselda half choked on her chocolate.
- 10:22The gestive then lapsed into a granite like silence, which made the gentleman
- 10:28shift uneasily on the edge of his seat, drop a spoon, and finally
- 10:33invent a previous engagement, and so beat a grateful retreat. What are you
- 10:39doing? What does it look as though I'm doing? I am having myself
- 10:43agent, but you just had tea. They can fight it out between the
- 10:48I'm gonna have pagings, but there is a little early from where I'm standing,
- 10:52it might already be a dance sight too late. Well, why the
- 10:56hell don't you join me? No? Doant you suit yourself? Oh?
- 11:05Own dann Fault said, have cottoned on for the blight along before this,
- 11:09I must be losing my grip. Was the time I'd have got his number
- 11:13before he got his size tens over the front door mat. And you're referring
- 11:18to our mister Justice cholt Rawlett. I wonder how long it took him to
- 11:22dream that one up, Or perhaps he's super dupa pulled it from a hat,
- 11:26super duper superintendent. Dear what police has? Oh God knows why I
- 11:39didn't tumble? What did he say? That ridiculous wife's name was again firel
- 11:43it Violet Cholet. Well have you ever heard anything more unlikely? Who in
- 11:52their right mind would ever want to be supernaturally reunited with someone called violent jolic
- 12:00mister Johnny, focus, focus, pudding and pie. Not that she ever
- 12:05existed, but like like somebody opening the second half in old time music Hall,
- 12:11Violet Julie and her performing love doves, Osprey Feather of the tempt and
- 12:18her seven friends dropping bird muck all over a velveteen and Deamonte ball gown,
- 12:22not to mention half the stores. I'm still not sure I follow you,
- 12:28Griselda. Well, God knows how much clearer I can make it phony through
- 12:35and through? Ah, mister Johney, for God's sake, stop calling him
- 12:39that missus Jollet too? What else was he going to get himself over the
- 12:45front door? But his r mister, well, the gentleman is what he
- 12:50pretends. I thought I put you in the picture. He's either one of
- 12:54the plain clothes Brigade or a hack a scrimm life screaming from one of those
- 13:01dreadful Sunday rags, all turge and through confession. But it doesn't look like
- 13:07a newspaper man who's never seen a newspaper man. They're not all trill,
- 13:11be happ dirty trinscoes. You know, I suppose they can't be still had
- 13:18it coming, had what came on the cards that one day I probably get
- 13:24myself splashed right across the front page of one of the Sunday dreadful real life
- 13:30expos A life after death racket, the sinister true you know, the kind
- 13:37of thing, one of those dreadful photographs they always fine to go with it,
- 13:41out of focus and slightly blurred around the edges. Grinsell's death. It
- 13:50it won't be true anyway, would it. So what the devil do you
- 13:58think I've been prattling on out the big Honey always knew it. So now
- 14:05it's out of the bag. Good run for our money, our money,
- 14:11sister Edy, that's over. I don't believe you. Then turn a blind
- 14:16eye again your option always been your prerogative in the past, always through turn
- 14:30a blind eye to whatever you can't take to you and Mumsie and dear dead
- 14:37Papa. The whole ridiculous charade of Arcadia Avenue over done with coupple. Thank
- 14:50god you're bad. It true gift, tony as hell if you've made it
- 14:58all, not all of it, not Manco capac. It had a ring
- 15:05about it, not the kind of thing they'd be likely to find in the
- 15:07telephone directory. But I heard him your spirit voice. The first stabbis one,
- 15:15even if I do say so, myself first tried it out when I
- 15:18was playing one of the three witches in the Scottish play. By the way,
- 15:24did you notice how your mister Johnick turned somersault when he heard of my
- 15:30theatrical associations. It must always be a bit of a giveaway. I suppose
- 15:35he was admiring the pendant pendant to the Emperor Manco Capa, who loved the
- 15:43income out of the land of kristined guide and let the Mortels bound in the
- 15:50bond of common play. Sorry of the bosh called bosh. God knows why
- 16:00even picked out that worthless bit of scrap iron, Probably with the rest of
- 16:04a junk one of those sixpenny trays. Hm, I see v No,
- 16:15just a bit of a headache an early night. I'll take one of my
- 16:21pills. Well, perhaps you too, well? What about your biddy Y's
- 16:26koto no sancho? Dear, I don't feel much like it tonight, not
- 16:33to night. We had no way of knowing how long it was before Griselda
- 16:42followed ed up the wooden hill. Jim had always been her tipple. It
- 16:48not only relaxed her, it gave her a warm feeling of righteous self pity.
- 16:55And if she wasn't entitled to a large slice of that tonight, who
- 17:00the devil was, she could have been asleep for hours. She might just
- 17:06have closed her eyes. She lay fully closed on top of the bed.
- 17:12She was perfectly aware of the distant town hall clock and that damn ginger tom
- 17:18making its catterwauling next door. Hm oh. She was cold. Reached down
- 17:26to pull the heavy eider down about her, but her hands lacked the strength,
- 17:33her intentions, the purpose. Hm. She was pinioned, but not
- 17:38only by sensical force, as though by hypnotism behind her eyes, dragging her
- 17:47backwards through time place to a scene she seemed to know, recognized as in
- 17:55a dream, but a dream that was about to become Herbie at heartens then,
- 18:07no sacred triple of the times, let it be shown for Harrington Lands
- 18:15that her denial of us, of our blessed sacred symbols shall be of it.
- 18:22Let the time beside praise Hime the sacred blade. The time of the
- 18:30letting blood is upon us. The time is now now, God, the
- 18:47heart true seer removes. See where its even now, what's on the altar
- 18:56of our forefathers? Even now, now, now, even now now.
- 19:12It was always Edie who coped with the ritual of early morning tea. She
- 19:18carefully avoid Griselda's pump pumped carpet slippers, then set the cup gently down on
- 19:22her bedside table, draw her curtains to exactly the wits she demanded, and
- 19:27then shake her gently but firmly by her shoulder until she got the first grunt
- 19:33of awakening and recognition. But no grunt came. It took Edie a long
- 19:40time before she finally would accept that Griselda was dead. Ooh d, but
- 20:02it's not even Wednesday, mister Johnet. No, they are coming. I
- 20:10I don't know. Are you alone, of course, but only for a
- 20:15minute. Then it's a terrible mass. I'd offer you some tea, but
- 20:26I'm not really up to it. I quite understand if there's anything nice.
- 20:32How did you find out about my sister, Miss Griselda's passing? A small
- 20:38paragraph in last evening's paper. Oh but only a small paragraph. Who say,
- 20:47Oh, I'm not sure she'd have been too happy about that. Notices,
- 20:52even the obituary kind, were very important to it. Bang our headlines,
- 20:57a photograph, a bit out of focus, bird around the edges,
- 21:06was the way she put it. When I opened the door to you just
- 21:10now, I quite expected popping camera balbs and a black Mariah m. I've
- 21:15almost hoped for it. I'm not sure I understand. There's really no need
- 21:19to keep up a charage, you know, no need at all, now,
- 21:26mister jobbit, I see h she saw through you all right, right
- 21:32from a very start. Edie, she said, Edie, dear the man's
- 21:37an impostor joppit hum. Such a ridiculous name, isn't it? No?
- 21:44There never was a late missus jovit either, was it. No? She
- 21:48roared her head off at that, like somebody opening the second half an old
- 21:53time musical. She roared her head Ah, how else could I have got
- 22:03to see her? Hm? False pretenses? It was important to me,
- 22:11So why I assume a false identity? Oh? No, the identity at
- 22:15least was my own. I do have a card, Professor, Henry Jalet.
- 22:22The letters will mean nothing to you. The National Institute of History Ancient
- 22:26History South American to be exact, specializing in early Incan cultures. Hm,
- 22:33it really means nothing to me, mister Jollet. No, But so what
- 22:37it's worth, I'd like you to explain where to begin. I'd never ventured
- 22:47into the spiritual world, but that didn't prevent me thinking I'd heard it all
- 22:52before. The substitution of an Incan emperor instead of your usual Indian chief gave
- 22:57a certain twist. But I really had no intention of coming until I found
- 23:03myself here go on. It wasn't until she summoned the emperor by name I
- 23:10I started to take an interest. Ah, yes, how great Manco Kataque.
- 23:17Not exactly the kind of name you find in the telephone directory, is
- 23:21it. It's why she chose it, mister johny made it up, if
- 23:26you like, Except that she didn't Mancho kapak A predestined one founder of the
- 23:36Inca dynasty, founder of the city called Gusco exactly. She could have researched
- 23:41it, of course, except that she didn't know. She didn't. As
- 23:48I listened to her, there were many details of the Emperor's fort city at
- 23:52Cuscoe, that no amateur, that evil eye, after a lifetime of study,
- 23:57and only now beginning to light on a new world long dead, but
- 24:03threw her awakening again with a vigor and intensity I could never have aspired to.
- 24:10And yet I doubt it right up until until the very last time.
- 24:18In this room. We were having tea, and then out of the corner
- 24:23of my eye, I spotted it, final proof of all I've been so
- 24:27stupidly skeptical about had poetry, and about her neck, the Royal seal pendant
- 24:34of the Inkers. You'd seen it the thor only in the gloom at a
- 24:40distance across the table. She'd refused to ever let me handle it. But
- 24:44suddenly here in her portrait twenty thirty years earlier, a very confident artist that
- 24:52all the time in the world to capture every detail. Will you permit me
- 24:57to see it dump if you wish it? She was wearing it when I
- 25:15found it. The clasp was broken, as though it had been torn from
- 25:22her neck. The autopsy was a necessary legal formality in view of her age,
- 25:30excess weight, some kind of heart condition seemed the lightliest beat in the
- 25:36antiseptic whitetness of their twentieth century morgue. They made their preparations. There were
- 25:42no scars on her body, not even an appendectomy. But when her cadaver
- 25:48was eventually opened, they found no heart, only the severed aorta and the
- 25:56cavity where it had once lain miss ed. Was offered a fortune for her
- 26:03pendant, she refused to sell it. It's now on permanent loan to mister
- 26:07Jollett's museum. She often drops in to see it, and there's usually tea
- 26:12and chocolate digestives in his office afterwards, and she's never taken down that brass
- 26:18name plate on the gate post consultations and ministrations strictly by appointment only. Whenever
- 26:26her finances get a bit tight, she consoles herself that she can always take
- 26:32up where Griselda left off, and why not she does have connections in high
- 26:38places. That was Is there anybody there? Starring Dilis Leigh as Griselda Thorpe,
- 26:48Sylvia Coleridge Edy and Norman Bird mister Jollet, The Price Affair was presented
- 26:55by Vincent Price, written by William Ingram and directed by John Das
