- 0:05Speaker 1: Hi, Hello, welcome back to Cardinal Territory.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I'm your host Kwu here with a special guest interview episode.
- 0:11Speaker 2: These two need no introduction, but I'm going to give
- 0:14Speaker 2: them anyway. Cardinals fans know them, love them. Cardinals coaches
- 0:17Speaker 2: Daniel discussA and John Jay joined the show. Guys, welcome
- 0:20Speaker 2: to Cardinal Territory.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Thanks for doing this finally, time you had us on.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Well, sorry, you're so popular, You're just in such high demand.
- 0:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean this was supposed to happen on like February.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Okay, look better late than never.
- 0:34Speaker 2: And when Cardinals fans watch this episode, it will be
- 0:37Speaker 2: the final day of what has been a week long
- 0:40Speaker 2: road trip to Seattle and Milwaukee. Yeah, it's a it's
- 0:44Speaker 2: a weird time for Cardinals baseball. We'll touch on the
- 0:46Speaker 2: We'll touch on the news. First of the series, Mason
- 0:49Speaker 2: win went ahead and called it a season with a
- 0:52Speaker 2: left nope, right meniscus tear that he was trying to
- 0:55Speaker 2: play through. He was scratched on Tuesday's game against the Mariners,
- 0:59Speaker 2: was not able to play even an off day on Thursday,
- 1:03Speaker 2: so manager Ali Marmle made the decision to end mason season.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Guys, We'll start with you, Scales.
- 1:08Speaker 2: What did you see from Mason Win this year that
- 1:11Speaker 2: really impressed you from just an overall player standpoint.
- 1:14Speaker 5: I mean you talk about what jumps off the page
- 1:17Speaker 5: first is is his defense. Obviously, the guy has been
- 1:21Speaker 5: as rock solid as they come out there at shortstop,
- 1:24Speaker 5: you know, a very demanding position. He gets to a
- 1:26Speaker 5: lot of balls, has the great arm, He puts a
- 1:29Speaker 5: lot of work into it. You could tell as the
- 1:32Speaker 5: season war on it just the knee just became too
- 1:35Speaker 5: much for him. He tried to post as as best
- 1:38Speaker 5: he could, and I give him a lot of credit
- 1:40Speaker 5: for running out there not at one hundred percent. He
- 1:43Speaker 5: knows that him at eighty percent is so maybe our
- 1:47Speaker 5: best option at shortstop.
- 1:48Speaker 3: So he took a lot of strids forward defensively this year.
- 1:51Speaker 5: You know, he brings he brings energy to that position,
- 1:54Speaker 5: brings energy to our lineup, and you know we're gonna
- 1:57Speaker 5: miss having him for the last couple of weeks.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah, Mason's been great, and I think you know Daniel
- 2:02Speaker 4: hit on it where you know he played out He
- 2:05Speaker 4: played out there at eighty percent and we saw what
- 2:07Speaker 4: he was doing out there. So I'm looking forward to
- 2:09Speaker 4: seeing a healthy Mason win next year, and I think
- 2:13Speaker 4: you know, you can continue to grow, right. You know,
- 2:15Speaker 4: in our experiences, every year you get a little bit
- 2:17Speaker 4: better and you start realizing things. And I think this
- 2:19Speaker 4: was a big year for him and we saw it right.
- 2:22Speaker 4: He put in the work on defense and he saw
- 2:24Speaker 4: the results, and I feel like he's going to do
- 2:26Speaker 4: out the rest of his game and I'm excited to
- 2:27Speaker 4: see Mason win next year.
- 2:28Speaker 6: Play.
- 2:29Speaker 2: This is such a unique time for this Cardinals organization
- 2:32Speaker 2: and you guys obviously started your careers in Saint Louis
- 2:36Speaker 2: at a time where the Saint Louis Cardinals were at
- 2:38Speaker 2: a peak and right now we're looking at what is
- 2:41Speaker 2: likely going to be a rebuild. I mean, we were
- 2:43Speaker 2: almost through this transition year and the whole premise of
- 2:46Speaker 2: this season was to find players or identify players that
- 2:49Speaker 2: could be a part of this future, and there were
- 2:51Speaker 2: so many different options coming into the year.
- 2:53Speaker 1: JJ.
- 2:53Speaker 2: For you, I mean, you've spent a ton of time
- 2:56Speaker 2: making this out feel better, working with different guys. Is
- 2:58Speaker 2: there anyone that you feel like took advantage of this
- 3:00Speaker 2: season from a coach perspective that you're excited about going
- 3:03Speaker 2: into twenty twenty six.
- 3:05Speaker 6: I think there's a few different guys.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I mean, you know, Alec Burrowson started the year off
- 3:08Speaker 4: as the first baseman they're with really a lot of
- 3:11Speaker 4: paying time for him, and then you've we've seen what
- 3:13Speaker 4: he's been able to do and he's improved on the
- 3:15Speaker 4: outfield and it's all testament to him. Early in the year,
- 3:18Speaker 4: when he wasn't getting the reps that you know, he
- 3:19Speaker 4: could have been getting, he was out there, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 4: putting the work in during banding practice behind the scenes,
- 3:23Speaker 4: and then it really paid off for him. So I think,
- 3:25Speaker 4: you know, he made a lot of big strides and
- 3:27Speaker 4: I'm happy for him with the year he's had.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Sky's what about you.
- 3:33Speaker 3: I think Burley has done a great job.
- 3:35Speaker 5: You know, he was a guy that we told we
- 3:37Speaker 5: told him, hey, you be ready to come play first year,
- 3:39Speaker 5: and you know, he didn't have a lot of opportunities
- 3:41Speaker 5: early and he fought his way into the lineup. I
- 3:45Speaker 5: think Yvon Herrera taking the next step forward as a hitter.
- 3:49Speaker 5: He's battled some injuries, but when he's been in the lineup,
- 3:52Speaker 5: like he's an impact bat for us. A young guy
- 3:55Speaker 5: that's that's learning how to how to be a middle
- 3:57Speaker 5: of the order hitter for us. So it's nice to
- 4:00Speaker 5: see those guys take those steps and really try to
- 4:03Speaker 5: and establish themselves as as solid major league performers, because
- 4:06Speaker 5: it's it's a hard gig these guys have. You know,
- 4:09Speaker 5: they're balancing establishing themselves, you know, personally, to try and
- 4:12Speaker 5: set set themselves up for the future, while also being
- 4:15Speaker 5: a part of, you know, trying to learn what it
- 4:17Speaker 5: is to be a winning player. So I give those
- 4:18Speaker 5: guys a lot of credit for taking steps forward this year.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And when you think about just what the organization was
- 4:24Speaker 2: trying to accomplish this year, I mean, we have oh
- 4:28Speaker 2: two weeks left of the regular season, definitely enough time
- 4:31Speaker 2: to look at a bunch of different players and say, Okay,
- 4:33Speaker 2: this season was a success in this regard, here's where
- 4:36Speaker 2: this player needs to take steps forward to coming next year.
- 4:38Speaker 2: When you look at this core of twenty twenty six,
- 4:40Speaker 2: and granted some of it might change with the new
- 4:42Speaker 2: front office, where do you feel like this this team
- 4:45Speaker 2: could be with the players currently on the roster coming
- 4:47Speaker 2: into next year.
- 4:49Speaker 5: So you know, I think we start this see here
- 4:52Speaker 5: as like you know, call it runway, call it whatever
- 4:55Speaker 5: you want. I don't think we really knew what to expect.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I people would ask me the off season, and I
- 5:01Speaker 5: would I'm really not sure what kind of team we're
- 5:05Speaker 5: going to be this year, Like we might be good
- 5:07Speaker 5: and we might be really bad, and we've been somewhere
- 5:09Speaker 5: in the middle. I think maybe we outperformed expectations for
- 5:12Speaker 5: a little while and have underperformed lately. But I think
- 5:17Speaker 5: you see, you've seen some of these guys get that
- 5:21Speaker 5: necessity experience uh JJ and I talked about all the time.
- 5:25Speaker 5: It takes hundreds of a bat's one hundreds of played
- 5:29Speaker 5: appearances years in the big leagues before you really understand
- 5:33Speaker 5: what type of player you are, what you do well,
- 5:35Speaker 5: what you don't do well, how the league is trying
- 5:38Speaker 5: to attack you, and it's just a game of adjustments.
- 5:43Speaker 5: The league, the league adjust to you to find how
- 5:44Speaker 5: to get you out. Then you have to adjust back,
- 5:47Speaker 5: and that continues for your whole career. I think some
- 5:49Speaker 5: of these guys are learning what it takes to do
- 5:53Speaker 5: that and and that's what it takes to stick around
- 5:56Speaker 5: in this game for a long time.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 4: I think the prime example is, you know, you see
- 6:00Speaker 4: a guy like bitter Scott, we talked about taking strides,
- 6:02Speaker 4: and we've seen what he's done on defense and base
- 6:05Speaker 4: running wise and offense. Like like Daniel said, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 4: it takes play appearance, it takes that experience. So you know,
- 6:11Speaker 4: I expect him to go into the off season and
- 6:13Speaker 4: you know, make some adjustments. But he's been great on
- 6:15Speaker 4: the way he's handled the you know, kind of the
- 6:17Speaker 4: mental side of it, which is probably the hardest part
- 6:20Speaker 4: about this game. Rights, It's a game of failure and
- 6:22Speaker 4: it's you know, how are you going to respond to
- 6:24Speaker 4: two adversity? So I think these guys have been through
- 6:26Speaker 4: a lot of adversity this year, you know, personally as
- 6:28Speaker 4: a team, and I'm looking forward to seeing them, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 4: how they build off the season.
- 6:34Speaker 3: I mean, you.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Guys know all about that, just based on your careers,
- 6:37Speaker 2: both as players and now as coaches, And I think
- 6:40Speaker 2: that's something that Cardinals fans like. Obviously they know you
- 6:43Speaker 2: wherever wherever Scalzo was, Jay's right there. You guys are
- 6:46Speaker 2: very much a packaged deal, and it's been that way
- 6:47Speaker 2: throughout your entire career as you both manage or not
- 6:51Speaker 2: managed a coach for the Cardinals. This season together, what
- 6:55Speaker 2: has been the best part of doing.
- 6:56Speaker 5: That, I think just showing up to work every day
- 7:00Speaker 5: with one of your best friends and trying to pass
- 7:04Speaker 5: along any information, any wisdom, any experience to the to
- 7:09Speaker 5: these players going forward, Like we don't have all the answers,
- 7:13Speaker 5: but we've seen a lot of baseball. We've seen a
- 7:15Speaker 5: lot of winning baseball, been a part of winning teams.
- 7:18Speaker 5: And the only one I took this job, and I
- 7:20Speaker 5: think I can speak for for Jay as well, is
- 7:22Speaker 5: is to be a part of a winning team. And
- 7:25Speaker 5: so no matter what the expectations are, we're you know,
- 7:28Speaker 5: what our record is, we are trying to impart you know,
- 7:32Speaker 5: winning habits on these guys, and I think we just
- 7:36Speaker 5: we just can't help but look at the gate like that.
- 7:38Speaker 5: And so we talk a lot about what we saw
- 7:41Speaker 5: in the game that night, what we might see moving forward,
- 7:43Speaker 5: a lot about our experiences, and just to have someone
- 7:46Speaker 5: you trust, someone that you've gone gone through these ups
- 7:50Speaker 5: and downs with in the coaches room with you is just, Uh,
- 7:53Speaker 5: it's been a lot of fun, you know, through the
- 7:55Speaker 5: ups and end of down.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Like we we just have a good time together.
- 7:58Speaker 6: Yeah, it's been fun and talk all the ups and downs.
- 8:00Speaker 4: And I think that's been cool where we live moments
- 8:03Speaker 4: that happened in our career right, whether positive or negatively,
- 8:06Speaker 4: to help this group of guys now. So you know,
- 8:09Speaker 4: there might be mistakes that we made in the past
- 8:11Speaker 4: and we can you know, we'll come back home and like, hey,
- 8:12Speaker 4: remember when you did this, only I did this or that,
- 8:14Speaker 4: and then you know, how can we portray that story
- 8:16Speaker 4: the next day to help these guys. So it's been
- 8:19Speaker 4: a ton of fun being able to show up to
- 8:20Speaker 4: work every day with your best friend and for me personally,
- 8:22Speaker 4: just to see Daniel you obviously in his role as
- 8:24Speaker 4: a bench coach and you know, being the manager's right
- 8:27Speaker 4: hand man. So you know, I get to see that
- 8:29Speaker 4: every single day and it's pretty cool to see him
- 8:31Speaker 4: in this position and to see him leading, and you
- 8:33Speaker 4: know the impact that he's had on all these guys.
- 8:34Speaker 6: It's pretty cool.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It is definitely pretty cool, I mean, just from an
- 8:37Speaker 2: immediate perspective to see how the coaching staff has really
- 8:40Speaker 2: had to change in terms of expectations for the organization.
- 8:44Speaker 1: You guys know this.
- 8:45Speaker 2: The Cardinals were always you know, it wasn't just B
- 8:48Speaker 2: five hundred or make the wild card. It was establish
- 8:51Speaker 2: yourself in the NAL Central at the minimum and make
- 8:54Speaker 2: these deep postseason runs, and you guys came to an
- 8:56Speaker 2: era where you were able to do that. The Cardinals
- 8:58Speaker 2: right now are working to get there. But right now
- 9:00Speaker 2: the evaluation and the coaching is more about developing at
- 9:04Speaker 2: the major leagues. Was that difficult for either of you
- 9:07Speaker 2: to really kind of have to make those changes because
- 9:10Speaker 2: those that's not who we were as players.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think, you know, I think, go ahead, j D.
- 9:16Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I think for me personally, you know, I
- 9:20Speaker 4: spent two years over in Miami and kind of saw
- 9:23Speaker 4: the impact you can have as a coach. Right the
- 9:24Speaker 4: first year we took over the brand new staff and
- 9:27Speaker 4: we were able to make a playoff run, which is
- 9:29Speaker 4: pretty cool. So, you know, having those experiences from the
- 9:32Speaker 4: past have helped me now to become in this stage
- 9:34Speaker 4: over now. But it doesn't change for me. Every single day,
- 9:37Speaker 4: I'm trying to win a ball game. I'm trying to
- 9:38Speaker 4: help guys, you.
- 9:39Speaker 6: Know, develop their game.
- 9:41Speaker 4: So you know, my mindset hasn't changed it all. The
- 9:43Speaker 4: way I approached the game doesn't change it all. I
- 9:45Speaker 4: think that's something I did as a player, right whether
- 9:47Speaker 4: I was starting or off the bench. Whatever it was,
- 9:50Speaker 4: I was trying to find a way to help the
- 9:51Speaker 4: team win. And that's what I try to do every
- 9:53Speaker 4: single day.
- 9:53Speaker 6: Now.
- 9:55Speaker 5: I think industry wide, you're seeing more teaching and coaching
- 9:59Speaker 5: at the major league level then we first came up.
- 10:03Speaker 5: You know, guys get to the big leagues quickly, and
- 10:06Speaker 5: they may miss some stuff along the way in the
- 10:08Speaker 5: minor leagues, and that's our job, appear to make sure
- 10:11Speaker 5: that if we see something that you know isn't up
- 10:14Speaker 5: to par, or that we don't like that, or that
- 10:16Speaker 5: we do like that, we reinforce it and we have
- 10:18Speaker 5: those conversations over again, even if the players don't want
- 10:21Speaker 5: to hear it right. We have to teach and we
- 10:24Speaker 5: have to coach, and it's our job to make sure
- 10:27Speaker 5: that those those legs are learned and those messages land,
- 10:31Speaker 5: and we will get to a point.
- 10:32Speaker 3: We'll get back to a.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Point where the Cardinals are in the conversation in central
- 10:37Speaker 5: every year, and it starts in the minor leagues and
- 10:41Speaker 5: being aligned from a ball all the way up to
- 10:43Speaker 5: the to the major league level, and so when we
- 10:46Speaker 5: get up there, we're on the same page and we
- 10:48Speaker 5: can just hit the ground running.
- 10:50Speaker 2: That's good stuff from Cardinals coaches Daniel Discusso and John
- 10:52Speaker 2: Jay will be right back after a quick message from DraftKings.

- 12:00Speaker 3: I was total pro, very pro.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Thank you very much. Well, you guys have some fun
- 12:06Speaker 1: events coming up.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Specifically, Jay, the third annual J Family Foundation Golf and
- 12:12Speaker 2: Games event is Wednesday, September seventeenth. This is something that
- 12:16Speaker 2: I believe you started when you were in Saint Louis previously,
- 12:19Speaker 2: and this is the grand return.
- 12:21Speaker 4: Correct this event we started a couple of years ago,
- 12:24Speaker 4: so it's gonna be a third one. But you know
- 12:25Speaker 4: we've done previous events in Saint Louis with the Make
- 12:27Speaker 4: a Wish Foundation and also with the Boys and Girls Club,
- 12:31Speaker 4: having both in events.
- 12:32Speaker 6: But yeah, this year is super fun.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Daniel's my co host, which is it's always great to
- 12:36Speaker 4: be able to do something together for the community. But
- 12:39Speaker 4: it's over at Family Golf that is owned by Adam Betts,
- 12:41Speaker 4: who's a good friend of ours. As well, he's another
- 12:43Speaker 4: co host, And yeah, it's going to benefit the Jay
- 12:45Speaker 4: Family Foundation as long as well as the PGA Reach,
- 12:49Speaker 4: Gateway Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Saint Louis.
- 12:53Speaker 2: So for those of you who aren't familiar or who
- 12:55Speaker 2: might not know much about the Jay Family Foundation, what's
- 12:57Speaker 2: the premise of your organization and why did you partner
- 13:00Speaker 2: and choose at this event.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Yeah, our foundation, you know, we really in some of
- 13:03Speaker 4: our pillars is youth, community and scholarship. So really we're
- 13:07Speaker 4: just trying to, you know, help the youth out any
- 13:09Speaker 4: way we can. You know, we were able to send
- 13:10Speaker 4: kids to baseball camps, We're able to send kids after
- 13:13Speaker 4: school programs back in Miami, you know, provide them with
- 13:15Speaker 4: equipment for baseball or for school. So we kind of,
- 13:18Speaker 4: you know, help out wherever we can. And in Saint Louis,
- 13:20Speaker 4: it's been great to get involved the community there. And
- 13:23Speaker 4: PGA Reach is somebody that we partner with and they're
- 13:26Speaker 4: actually building a pretty cool youth community center over at
- 13:29Speaker 4: the Boys and Girls Club, So some of these funds
- 13:31Speaker 4: are going to be raised towards towards that project, which
- 13:35Speaker 4: is pretty cool. And I also do during the holidays.
- 13:38Speaker 4: We do a skateboard giveaway over at the Boys and
- 13:40Speaker 4: Girls Club as well. So, you know, Saint Louis is
- 13:42Speaker 4: you know, everyone knows I love Miami and from Miami
- 13:44Speaker 4: and all that, but Saint Louis is my second home.
- 13:46Speaker 4: And you know, I'm always proud to say that.
- 13:50Speaker 2: Scout's how excited are you to partner with jam and
- 13:52Speaker 2: you guys do everything together. But I mean, let's let's
- 13:55Speaker 2: add some context here. Golf is a relatively new hobby
- 13:58Speaker 2: for Jay. You're I don't want to say this, but
- 14:01Speaker 2: you are kind of good at golf. We'll talk about it,
- 14:04Speaker 2: we'll talk about your performance, but first, what's it like
- 14:07Speaker 2: to partner with him and just kind of have you know,
- 14:09Speaker 2: another event that you guys can do together.
- 14:11Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, he's his work in the charitable space
- 14:15Speaker 5: is inspired and so when he asked me to if
- 14:17Speaker 5: I want to partner with him, of course the answer
- 14:19Speaker 5: was yes.
- 14:20Speaker 3: And to watch what he's done over the years through
- 14:22Speaker 3: his events.
- 14:23Speaker 5: And the impact he's been able to have on the community,
- 14:26Speaker 5: I'm happy to be a part of it. It's it's
- 14:28Speaker 5: a fun event we've done. I've been there a couple
- 14:30Speaker 5: of times now, Uh, fan golf and the Family Golf
- 14:33Speaker 5: Centers is awesome space.
- 14:35Speaker 3: We have a good time. There'll be a long drive contest.
- 14:38Speaker 5: I think they'll be a close to the pin contest,
- 14:40Speaker 5: and if I'm mistaken, the winner of the close to
- 14:42Speaker 5: the pin contest will square off against me in the finals.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So that'll be an extra little bonus treat.
- 14:49Speaker 1: So you just you just ask that yourself to the finals,
- 14:52Speaker 1: no matter what.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Did yet?
- 14:55Speaker 5: No, they just that's their their prize for winning and
- 14:57Speaker 5: they get to play against me in the finals.
- 14:59Speaker 1: So what are you going to do when I beat
- 15:02Speaker 1: you in the finals? How are you going to react
- 15:03Speaker 1: to that?
- 15:04Speaker 3: I don't I don't know if I'll be able to
- 15:06Speaker 3: show my face anywhere in Saint Louis if that happens.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I can't wait. We're talking to woman's long drive champion
- 15:12Speaker 1: of the Cardinals.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Cardinals Charcas, that is I forgot? And what did you win? Again?
- 15:17Speaker 1: A golf bag?
- 15:18Speaker 3: Nice good price?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well went to my dad. So I'm terrible to
- 15:23Speaker 1: you guys.
- 15:24Speaker 6: I came top three, you know, I was the third
- 15:26Speaker 6: place finish.
- 15:26Speaker 1: So for what pool?
- 15:29Speaker 6: The best pool there was? I'm not sure.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I think it was the second I could be wrong,
- 15:33Speaker 2: but I think it was the second pool his team.
- 15:37Speaker 5: His team did finish third in the beef, so he
- 15:40Speaker 5: did come up. He came up with something, what did
- 15:42Speaker 5: you win?
- 15:44Speaker 6: I want a club, believe a putter?
- 15:47Speaker 4: Oh yeah, and I also am probably say that we
- 15:49Speaker 4: used my ball about eight times in the tournament.
- 15:52Speaker 3: So nice, nice? I contributed, Yeah, I.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Said one time on the course day.
- 15:58Speaker 2: But but when you saw me whose drive was my
- 16:01Speaker 2: group using yours?
- 16:02Speaker 6: I was very impressed. I couldn't believe it. Honestly, I
- 16:04Speaker 6: was shocked.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Oh okay, well, I'm looking forward to it. It sounds like
- 16:09Speaker 2: it should be a really fun event. How how we
- 16:12Speaker 2: fare at closest to the pin? I don't know, Scout's
- 16:14Speaker 2: a lot of pressure on you. But for details who
- 16:17Speaker 2: anyone who'd like to donate or find out more about
- 16:19Speaker 2: this event, you can visit the Jfamilyfoundation dot com. Do
- 16:22Speaker 2: you guys have anything else coming up in our final
- 16:24Speaker 2: home stand? That makes me a little sad. Actually we
- 16:27Speaker 2: just have six home games left. What Scouts that will
- 16:30Speaker 2: start with you? What do you want to see from
- 16:32Speaker 2: this team as they close out what they have at home?
- 16:36Speaker 5: I just want to see the see us like push
- 16:38Speaker 5: to the finish. You know, we technically we're still in it.
- 16:41Speaker 5: We're going to need to have some help, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 5: square from a couple of teams, but the finish lines inside, like,
- 16:48Speaker 5: I just want to see these guys compete all the
- 16:50Speaker 5: way to the end. There's there's guys that are competing
- 16:54Speaker 5: for jobs next year, and we've we've talked about opportunity
- 16:57Speaker 5: in that clubhouse, and there's always there's always opportunit using
- 17:00Speaker 5: this game, whether you're showcasing yourself for our new front
- 17:03Speaker 5: office and for a role next year, or there's other
- 17:06Speaker 5: teams out there that they may trade for guys.
- 17:09Speaker 3: So just for us to compete, grind out through the finish.
- 17:13Speaker 5: It's not easy when you're on the outside looking in
- 17:15Speaker 5: of a playoff race, but we just want these guys
- 17:17Speaker 5: to finish strong and heading the off season a positive note.
- 17:21Speaker 4: I think the word that resonates is compete, right, just
- 17:23Speaker 4: go out there and compete, you know, finish, Don't worry
- 17:26Speaker 4: about the record, don't warn about the standings, to just
- 17:27Speaker 4: go out there, finish and compete and continue to build
- 17:30Speaker 4: towards the future, which is next year. And so I'm
- 17:32Speaker 4: looking forward to seeing these guys compete with the routines
- 17:34Speaker 4: and just with what they do every day.
- 17:37Speaker 2: When you're looking at this team, and I think we
- 17:39Speaker 2: by the time this episode drops, we'll have a lucky
- 17:42Speaker 2: number thirteen games remaining. What's going to be important for
- 17:46Speaker 2: this young core to take away from this season because
- 17:48Speaker 2: this is most likely going to be not maybe the
- 17:51Speaker 2: exact same roster, but a very similar roster next year
- 17:53Speaker 2: in terms of players that are going to be under
- 17:55Speaker 2: team control, the core that the Cardinals like to establish,
- 17:58Speaker 2: it's going to be these guys are essentially responsible for
- 18:02Speaker 2: creating the culture and the team that you guys once did.
- 18:05Speaker 2: What's going to be the biggest lesson they take away
- 18:07Speaker 2: from this year?
- 18:09Speaker 5: I think it's going to be ownership over that clubhouse.
- 18:13Speaker 5: There are a few guys in that clubhouse that are
- 18:17Speaker 5: that have had three four years of service now and
- 18:19Speaker 5: they're kind of coming into that that phase of their
- 18:22Speaker 5: career where they're the they can be the bridge guys
- 18:24Speaker 5: between the veterans and the young players, and and we'd
- 18:27Speaker 5: really like to see, uh, some of those guys step
- 18:29Speaker 5: up and take ownership. There's times where, uh, you're waiting
- 18:33Speaker 5: for a player to say something in the meeting and
- 18:35Speaker 5: and nobody does. And these guys are getting to that
- 18:38Speaker 5: level where they have experience in the bis now and
- 18:41Speaker 5: they've seen, you know, hundreds of games and been a
- 18:44Speaker 5: part of you know, big spots and stuff, and and
- 18:47Speaker 5: I like to see them, you know, take some ownership
- 18:49Speaker 5: of the direction of this franchise, because ultimately, it doesn't
- 18:52Speaker 5: matter what Olie says, what what the coaching staff says,
- 18:55Speaker 5: what upstairs says. It comes down to the players on
- 18:57Speaker 5: the field, and they have to make a decision with direction.
- 19:00Speaker 5: They're they're going to take this thing. So I'd like
- 19:03Speaker 5: to see that that ownership take place and those guys
- 19:06Speaker 5: rise to the and take that step.
- 19:09Speaker 4: Yeah, taking ownership of the season, right, you know, looking
- 19:12Speaker 4: at it and saying what do I need to do
- 19:14Speaker 4: to improve?
- 19:15Speaker 6: What did I do good? What did I do bad?
- 19:16Speaker 6: And having an.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Honest assessment of the season and moving forward. Right.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Like we said earlier, this game is not easy. It's hard,
- 19:23Speaker 4: and it takes a lot of experience to get to
- 19:25Speaker 4: the point you want to get to. So, you know,
- 19:27Speaker 4: my thing for them is, hey, look at yourself in
- 19:29Speaker 4: the mirror. What can you improve on and how are
- 19:30Speaker 4: you going to improve on that? And let's attack that
- 19:32Speaker 4: and let's get ready.
- 19:33Speaker 3: For next year.
- 19:34Speaker 2: All right, we got one more message from our friends
- 19:36Speaker 2: at Arena Club featuring as I'm looking at the video
- 19:39Speaker 2: and ad read from AJ Prazinski, who was a late
- 19:42Speaker 2: scratched from today's show. So foul Territory subscribers, make sure
- 19:46Speaker 2: that we give AJ a lot of crap on his
- 19:48Speaker 2: next episode, because this was supposed to be a collaborative effort.
- 19:51Speaker 1: But late scratch not a gamer.
- 19:53Speaker 5: I mean, AJ normally posts, so I am shocked that
- 19:57Speaker 5: he didn't post. Shocked and disappointed.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Correct, I'm disappointed. Well that's the new word I'll.
- 20:02Speaker 2: Use, Aj, We're disappointed in you. Let's hear from We're
- 20:05Speaker 2: gonna Club and we'll end. Uh what we're done.
- 20:09Speaker 8: Time time for your weekly Arena Club segment where we
- 20:13Speaker 8: see what AJ pulls from a slab pack and here
- 20:18Speaker 8: we go, pull a little Emerald pack this week. AJ
- 20:22Speaker 8: looking for something big.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Always, I'm always looking for the big thing. Next.
- 20:26Speaker 8: Big things, got big money, big money, baby. We've got
- 20:30Speaker 8: a Dave Winfield card from nineteen seventy four to seventy
- 20:33Speaker 8: four tops card from this Emerald pack. Estimated value three
- 20:38Speaker 8: hundred bucks. You could sell it back for two seventy
- 20:42Speaker 8: sod So I feel like you are into more of
- 20:45Speaker 8: the current players. Would that be accurate?
- 20:48Speaker 5: Like legend in my showroom, I have a Robin you out,
- 20:50Speaker 5: I have a Griffy rookie card.
- 20:51Speaker 3: Think that's true? So I mean I have some older
- 20:53Speaker 3: vintage players Bob Gibson.
- 20:55Speaker 6: Oh yeah, you have Gibson.
- 20:56Speaker 5: So I know I disagree Scott, But Dave Winfield for
- 21:00Speaker 5: that mount of money back, I'm reselling it.
- 21:02Speaker 8: And if you want to get your own pack or
- 21:04Speaker 8: new card, you can get twenty percent off your first
- 21:07Speaker 8: slab pack or card purchase at arenaclub dot com slash foul.
- 21:12Speaker 1: All right, do you guys want to end on a
- 21:13Speaker 1: sentimental note?
- 21:16Speaker 6: Sure?
- 21:16Speaker 1: Do we have a choice, No, you don't.
- 21:20Speaker 2: You guys have done almost every single chapter of your
- 21:23Speaker 2: career as whether they were as rookies, the later parts
- 21:25Speaker 2: of your careers, and now as you start your coaching careers,
- 21:28Speaker 2: it's you've been a tandem and that kind of bond
- 21:31Speaker 2: is rare, especially in baseball. But when I like to
- 21:35Speaker 2: call this my trauma bond with my fellow beat writers,
- 21:37Speaker 2: when you go through a multiple seasons over and over
- 21:40Speaker 2: and it's two hundred games, you're away from your family
- 21:42Speaker 2: most of the time, the people you surround yourself with
- 21:45Speaker 2: really do become family, and it really does matter. As
- 21:48Speaker 2: you are both watching Jjb'll start with you when you
- 21:51Speaker 2: watch Scouse start his coaching career and what he's learned
- 21:54Speaker 2: as a bench coach, and now that you guys are together,
- 21:56Speaker 2: what's his strength? What are you proud of when you
- 21:59Speaker 2: see him in his everyday routine.
- 22:02Speaker 4: I think one of the biggest thing is is he's
- 22:04Speaker 4: even cut right He doesn't. He doesn't he doesn't have
- 22:06Speaker 4: a reaction right away to things. You know, he takes
- 22:08Speaker 4: the emotion out of it. And I think that calming
- 22:10Speaker 4: presence is something.
- 22:11Speaker 6: That I look towards a lot of times.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Right things are going on during the game, things targetting
- 22:15Speaker 4: fast and I can kind of look at him and
- 22:17Speaker 4: he's calm. So I think that's one of the biggest
- 22:20Speaker 4: traits that he has, that he's calm and he's cool
- 22:23Speaker 4: and under control, and it's something that I know I'm
- 22:25Speaker 4: a little bit different with that, So I always admire
- 22:29Speaker 4: his ability to really, you know, be in the moment
- 22:32Speaker 4: and not be emotional, which is something that's pretty cool.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Scoleston.
- 22:36Speaker 2: You see Jay I mean, he had two years in
- 22:37Speaker 2: Miami under mutual friend of the podcast skipt Schumacher, and
- 22:43Speaker 2: now you see him in a different role with a
- 22:45Speaker 2: different organization that means so much to you, guys.
- 22:47Speaker 1: What do you see from him as a coach?
- 22:49Speaker 5: I think the things that it's about from John are
- 22:53Speaker 5: his work ethic and his energy. Right, this guy shows
- 22:55Speaker 5: up to the park every day with energy, sometimes more
- 22:58Speaker 5: energy than the players and gets after it with those guys.
- 23:02Speaker 5: He demands a lot, but he has a lot to give.
- 23:05Speaker 5: So it's fun to see him out there. If the
- 23:08Speaker 5: outfield coach is shagging out there, then then the players
- 23:10Speaker 5: are like, man, I've better re out there shagging too.
- 23:12Speaker 5: He's running sprints with them, holding guys accountable. So you know,
- 23:15Speaker 5: that work ethic and that energy that he bring every
- 23:18Speaker 5: day is inspiring and he just out there to make
- 23:20Speaker 5: guys better, and so it's fun to watch him to
- 23:22Speaker 5: watch work.
- 23:24Speaker 2: I will say earlier in the year, definitely in the
- 23:27Speaker 2: first half, we were on the you know the track
- 23:30Speaker 2: pregame watching VP and there was this guy in like
- 23:33Speaker 2: far way in centerfield hoodie on. My clue should have
- 23:35Speaker 2: been that he also had a beanie on, but I
- 23:37Speaker 2: was like, which outfielder is getting after it? Like leaping
- 23:40Speaker 2: at the wall, like going all out. It wasn't as
- 23:43Speaker 2: impressed with a stubby claps diving stop a couple of weeks
- 23:45Speaker 2: ago on the infield during VP, but it was pretty
- 23:48Speaker 2: close and I looked over.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh, that's that's John Jay. That's
- 23:52Speaker 1: not an outfielder on the team. That is John Jay.
- 23:54Speaker 1: You still have a JA. I think. I think if
- 23:56Speaker 1: they really needed you, could you go out there and.
- 23:58Speaker 6: Post I want to see yes, I want to see yes.
- 24:02Speaker 6: Well I'm not.
- 24:07Speaker 5: He's the emergency outfredre for you to activate somebody from
- 24:10Speaker 5: the staff.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Okay, well then what's your role?
- 24:14Speaker 3: I know, I'll let him get after it. I'm done playing.
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'll let him shag.
- 24:19Speaker 2: You have to say, because your manager is most likely
- 24:21Speaker 2: getting ejected at some point during so you have to
- 24:24Speaker 2: be there. Has to be like a backup manager on reserve.
- 24:27Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, so yeah, I'll hold myself out just but.
- 24:31Speaker 6: He's been he's been really good this year.
- 24:36Speaker 1: He has he has the most.
- 24:39Speaker 3: But we did set the line earlier this year.
- 24:41Speaker 5: He said four and a half, and I think Jay
- 24:43Speaker 5: and I both laughed at him and I know he's
- 24:45Speaker 5: hit the over, but he.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Has been good.
- 24:50Speaker 5: He has been good some well, sometimes a player freaks
- 24:53Speaker 5: out and then the manager has no choice but to
- 24:55Speaker 5: go out there, so mend him for that. I don't
- 24:58Speaker 5: think he always wants to get ejected, but sometimes as
- 25:01Speaker 5: the manager, you don't really have a choice. Yeah, we can,
- 25:04Speaker 5: but there's there's sometimes that he wants to get ejected.
- 25:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you can tell, you can tell.
- 25:10Speaker 2: My favorite was when he got ejected the last game
- 25:13Speaker 2: of the first half and we had this like four
- 25:16Speaker 2: hour rain delay, and he got ejected in the bottom
- 25:20Speaker 2: of the eighth and he comes flying out and he
- 25:22Speaker 2: has eight fingers up and I'm not I can I
- 25:25Speaker 2: just know him and I did like the lip rid
- 25:27Speaker 2: later and you can see him say, you threw me
- 25:29Speaker 2: out in the eighth because you man sit through an
- 25:31Speaker 2: entire rain delay, you know, rightfully, So if you're gonna
- 25:33Speaker 2: throw me out, do it before the delay.
- 25:37Speaker 5: But I will say, we have not at least Alie
- 25:40Speaker 5: and I haven't gotten thrown out on the same play
- 25:42Speaker 5: this year at all.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Like we did last year twice in Milwaukee twice run
- 25:48Speaker 3: it back. We have two more chances, so we have
- 25:50Speaker 3: run it back for all time sakes. The people may
- 25:54Speaker 3: want to see J managed. I don't know.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Is that how the Jay we're it?
- 26:01Speaker 3: I'm in last last year with Alie me Turner, so
- 26:06Speaker 3: we're gonna go Brownie. I don't know.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I don't know, guys, Let's find out. Does everyone get righted?
- 26:12Speaker 5: And then eventually, Oh, I've been good, I've been I've
- 26:14Speaker 5: been good this year.
- 26:15Speaker 3: I've been good. For now?
- 26:18Speaker 2: All right, guys, I know you have to get to
- 26:19Speaker 2: American Family Field for a thrilling seven to fifteen matchup
- 26:23Speaker 2: against the Brewers and which maybe a J presents people
- 26:25Speaker 2: show up to that one.
- 26:27Speaker 1: He just texted me. By the way, I hope it's
- 26:28Speaker 1: an apology. AJ.
- 26:29Speaker 2: If you're watching this, it's only because we care and
- 26:31Speaker 2: we know that you're better than this.
- 26:33Speaker 1: You're better.
- 26:34Speaker 5: I think that that gig pays more than this gig,
- 26:37Speaker 5: so I'm sure he'll post for that one.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I'm sorry, does this not look like a high quality podcast?
- 26:41Speaker 3: Too serious? All right?
- 26:44Speaker 1: Day, scous thanks so much for doing this again.
- 26:48Speaker 2: You would like to check out more about the J
- 26:49Speaker 2: Family Foundation, you can do so at Jfamilyfoundation dot com.
- 26:53Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to the event on Wednesday and hoping
- 26:55Speaker 2: to finish the season strong.
- 26:57Speaker 1: Thanks. Its always guys, We'll talk soon, see you all
- 27:00Speaker 3: Right, Thanks Katie,
