Former Officer Sentenced for Walmart Shooting | Kansas City News

A former Kansas City police officer, Taquiza Johnson, was convicted of second-degree murder and armed criminal action after fatally shooting 71-year-old Ronald Barnett outside a Northland Walmart in August 2024. Using his former duty weapon, Johnson claimed self-defense, but jurors rejected his story — especially since Barnett wasn’t armed. Surveillance footage and witness testimony helped convict him, and the jury recommended life for murder and 15 years for the armed crime.
