- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, the middle of
- 0:15the week. It's the 24th of July and good
- 0:19on you for tapping on play and inviting me into your day.
- 0:22I wonder what your day looks like, if it's a chock a block
- 0:25full, if there's plenty of space, or anywhere in between.
- 0:29So glad that you can invite me in so that you and I can
- 0:33continue to hear what John captures and what God wants to
- 0:38communicate to us from Jesus in that time just before he's taken
- 0:43away from his disciples. This is this, this final moment
- 0:47where Jesus can tell them all the things that are burning on
- 0:51his heart, that he just wants them and us all this time later
- 0:55to know what a privilege we have to come together and be able to
- 1:00hear this. It blows me away.
- 1:02I hope that you're enjoying this too.
- 1:04These are great words and we're going to continue to share them
- 1:08together as we read John chapter 16.
- 1:23I have told you these things so that you won't abandoned your
- 1:26faith, for you will be expelled from the synagogues and the time
- 1:30is coming when those who killed you will think they are doing a
- 1:35holy service for God. This is because they have never
- 1:39known the Father or me. Yes, I'm telling you these
- 1:43things now so that when they happen, you will remember my
- 1:47warning. I didn't tell you earlier
- 1:50because I was going to be with you for a while longer.
- 1:53But now I am going away to the one who sent me, and not one of
- 1:58you is asking where I'm going. Instead, you grieve because of
- 2:02what I've told you. But in fact, it is best for you
- 2:07that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate won't come.
- 2:11If I do go away, then I will send Him to you, and when he
- 2:16comes, he will convict the world of its sin and of God's
- 2:20righteousness and of the coming judgement.
- 2:24The world's sin is that it refuses to believe in me.
- 2:27Righteousness is available because I go to the Father and
- 2:32you will see me. No more judgement will come
- 2:35because the rule of this world has already been judged.
- 2:40There's so much more I want to tell you that you can't bear it
- 2:44now. When the Spirit of truth comes,
- 2:47He will guide you into all truth.
- 2:50He will not speak on His own, but will tell you what He has
- 2:53heard. He will tell you about the
- 2:55future. He will bring me glory by
- 2:59telling you whatever He receives from me.
- 3:02All that belongs to the Father is mine.
- 3:05This is why I said the Spirit will tell you whatever He
- 3:09receives from me, in a little while you won't see me anymore,
- 3:15but a little while after that you will see me again.
- 3:19Some of the disciples asked each other, what does he mean when he
- 3:23says in a little while you won't see me, but then you will see me
- 3:27and I'm going to the Father and what does he mean by a little
- 3:31while? We don't understand.
- 3:35Jesus realised they wanted to ask him about it, so he said,
- 3:39Are you asking yourselves what I meant?
- 3:41I said in a little while you won't see me, but a little while
- 3:46after that you will see me again.
- 3:49I tell you the truth. You will weep and mourn over
- 3:53what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice.
- 3:58You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful
- 4:02joy. It will be like a woman
- 4:04suffering the pains of labour. When a child is born, her
- 4:08anguish gives way to joy because she has brought a new baby into
- 4:13the world. So you have sorrow now, but I
- 4:16will see you again. Then you will rejoice and no one
- 4:21can rob you of that joy. At that time, you won't need to
- 4:25ask me for anything. I tell you the truth.
- 4:28You will ask the Father directly and he will grant you your
- 4:32request because you use my name. You haven't done this before.
- 4:38Ask using my name, and you will receive, and you will have
- 4:43abundant joy. I've spoken of these matters in
- 4:47figures of speech, but soon I will stop speaking figuratively,
- 4:52and I will tell you plainly all about the Father.
- 4:55Then you will ask in my name. I'm not saying I will ask for
- 4:59the Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you
- 5:04dearly because you love me and believe that I came from God.
- 5:09Yes, I came from the Father into the world, and now I will leave
- 5:14the world and return to the Father.
- 5:18Then his disciples said at last he was speaking plainly and not
- 5:23figuratively. Now we understand that you know
- 5:26everything, and there's no need to question you from this.
- 5:30We believe that you came from God.
- 5:34Jesus asked, do you finally believe?
- 5:39But the time is coming, indeed. It's here now, when you will be
- 5:43scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone.
- 5:48Yet I'm not alone because the Father is with me.
- 5:53I've told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
- 5:57Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take
- 6:02heart, because I have overcome the world.
- 6:16You are a gracious God, Jesus. When your mission takes you away
- 6:23from your disciples, you don't leave anything to chance.
- 6:26You send your advocate. You send your Holy Spirit to be
- 6:29with them and to guide them to the truth about you.
- 6:34And you invite them to ask and to pray in your name, Jesus, and
- 6:40that through this the Father will listen to them.
- 6:43Listen to us. Thank you that you tell us so
- 6:49clearly how we can continue after your death and
- 6:53resurrection to have this relationship with you, our
- 6:57mighty but present Saviour. And yes, we do encounter sorrows
- 7:04and hardships and trials, and we will take heart because in you
- 7:11we too get to overcome this world, not by victory over it,
- 7:16but by your victory well beyond this world into eternity.
- 7:23Thank you for your incredible victory and your invitation for
- 7:27us to be a part of that and to share the spoils of your
- 7:31victory, which is eternity lived with you and peace right now as
- 7:37we find that in you and your glory.
- 7:41And so Jesus, as you commanded us and instructed us, we pray
- 7:45all of these things in your mighty and holy name, which
- 7:49gives us access directly to the Father.
- 7:54Amen.
