- 1:08Speaker 9: Welcome to Monday's sports Talk Chip Howard without Chip Howard,
- 1:12Speaker 9: which you know for the summer is not really that abnormal, right,
- 1:15Speaker 9: I mean it happens. I don't really knows Chip here
- 1:19Speaker 9: this week or just not today?
- 1:21Speaker 2: Not today?
- 1:21Speaker 9: Okay, So I'm Dusty, I'm here for Chip today. Rusty
- 1:26Speaker 9: will join me it'll be the Dusty and Rusty Show
- 1:29Speaker 9: coming up about four point thirty or so, and in
- 1:33Speaker 9: the meantime we will keep you up to date on
- 1:35Speaker 9: France and Iraq. That will be World Cup action and
- 1:40Speaker 9: we're watching it so you don't have to. So in
- 1:43Speaker 9: BAFE scores, he's got he's got some scoring to do
- 1:47Speaker 9: to keep up with Messi. We'll just jump to that now.
- 1:51Speaker 9: Messi scored two more today, becomes the all time leading
- 1:56Speaker 9: score in the World Cup, scored five since Marcel Reid
- 2:01Speaker 9: gave me a jersey. I'm just throwing that out there.
- 2:03Speaker 9: You know, you take that however you want. But he
- 2:05Speaker 9: scored all five of Argentina's goals, who are now two
- 2:09Speaker 9: to zero in World Cup play, all thanks to Marcel
- 2:12Speaker 9: Reid as far as I know. So that's what I'm
- 2:15Speaker 9: gonna go with. He'll be playing Argentina plays in Dallas
- 2:22Speaker 9: for their final group game. So if you missed out
- 2:26Speaker 9: on getting to see Messi play at Kyle Field, maybe
- 2:29Speaker 9: you can head up to Dallas and maybe he'll play,
- 2:33Speaker 9: because they may have the group first place locked up
- 2:37Speaker 9: by the time that happens today, depending on the outcome tonight.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I think I think.
- 2:42Speaker 9: It but they will take on who are they taking
- 2:49Speaker 9: on in their next match? I looked at it was
- 2:54Speaker 9: it was a team from the bottom of the table
- 2:56Speaker 9: that they expected to beat, and I've already forgot and
- 3:00Speaker 9: because you know, there's just too many of these games. Now,
- 3:04Speaker 9: I've enjoyed the heck out of the World Cup. I
- 3:08Speaker 9: think it's been fun to watch for a guy who
- 3:10Speaker 9: doesn't really follow soccer but can enjoy the match. So
- 3:16Speaker 9: do you have do you have their final game?
- 3:19Speaker 2: Jordan?
- 3:19Speaker 9: Yeah, okay, just one guy. So I think Messi should
- 3:24Speaker 9: be able to score against against him, uh, coming up
- 3:28Speaker 9: in Dallas in their final game in Group three. But
- 3:31Speaker 9: we've enjoyed that. But he's now the old time leading
- 3:35Speaker 9: goal scorer and has had a spectacular start to the
- 3:38Speaker 9: World Cup. Back home in Texas, the Dallas Mavericks have
- 3:43Speaker 9: a new coach, and when Rusty gets here, we're going
- 3:47Speaker 9: to talk more about you know, if this means anything
- 3:49Speaker 9: across college basketball, because the Dallas Mavericks are hiring Dusty May,
- 3:56Speaker 9: the head coach of Michigan coming off a national championship,
- 4:00Speaker 9: taking over for Jason Kidd at the Mavericks. They'll try
- 4:04Speaker 9: and have a little better record than Kid has had.
- 4:07Speaker 9: But let's be honest, the franchise wasn't real good to
- 4:12Speaker 9: the Mavericks and their roster. Now they do have Cooper
- 4:16Speaker 9: Flag and you know, a new guy to kind of
- 4:18Speaker 9: start the program around as Dusty May takes over. If
- 4:25Speaker 9: and what it sounds like Michigan's going to hire their
- 4:27Speaker 9: assistant coach to be the head coach for this year,
- 4:32Speaker 9: that will slow down the whole carousel. But if it
- 4:36Speaker 9: starts ramping up and coaches start moving Midsummer, it could
- 4:41Speaker 9: be it could be very interesting for college basketball. All
- 4:44Speaker 9: the Michigan players as soon as this becomes officially announced
- 4:50Speaker 9: that he's leaving the university will have a fifteen day
- 4:52Speaker 9: window the thinking all leave, and if Michigan ends up
- 4:57Speaker 9: getting a new coach from a different team, then they'll
- 5:01Speaker 9: all have a window that they can jump back in
- 5:03Speaker 9: the portal and try and move rosters. And it's a
- 5:09Speaker 9: very interesting time for a roster move. But for the NBA,
- 5:14Speaker 9: that gets the Dallas Mavericks a new head coach ahead
- 5:17Speaker 9: of the NBA Draft, which is coming up soon. So
- 5:21Speaker 9: we'll talk more Mavericks basketball and Dusty May when Rusty
- 5:25Speaker 9: gets here. Coming up Over the weekend, the Houston Astros.
- 5:30Speaker 9: They won a series against the Cleveland Guardians. Don't look, now,
- 5:36Speaker 9: that's three series.
- 5:37Speaker 2: In a row.
- 5:38Speaker 9: The Astros have one for the first time this season.
- 5:43Speaker 9: Now the Astros are still Oh, I'm sure there are
- 5:48Speaker 9: records on this piece of paper here somewhere. Of course
- 5:51Speaker 9: not it's from the Astros organization. They don't want to
- 5:53Speaker 9: tell me. But that's okay, I've got it. They're thirty
- 5:55Speaker 9: seven and forty two, so five games below the mark.
- 6:00Speaker 9: But because the Al West is what it is, they're
- 6:04Speaker 9: only three games back of first place. So Goodwin and
- 6:09Speaker 9: Jordan Alvarez. He goes one for two with a solo
- 6:13Speaker 9: homer two walks, becomes the fourth player in club history
- 6:18Speaker 9: to reach twenty five homers through the team's first seventy
- 6:21Speaker 9: nine games. You talk about a random stat. Hey got
- 6:24Speaker 9: handed to their sid guy for coming up with twenty
- 6:27Speaker 9: five homers in seventy nine games, because everyone looks at that, right, Hey,
- 6:31Speaker 9: what did you do in your first seventy nine games
- 6:33Speaker 9: of the season, Because that's a natural marking point. So anyway,
- 6:38Speaker 9: he's the fourth player to do it. He joins Jeff Bagwell,
- 6:41Speaker 9: who did it twice. He had twenty six and ninety
- 6:44Speaker 9: nine and twenty five in ninety four through seventy nine games,
- 6:49Speaker 9: not eighty two, not halfway through the season, but through
- 6:52Speaker 9: seventy nine games, or eighty one would be halfway through
- 6:55Speaker 9: the season. Right, one hundred and sixty two games. Eighty
- 6:59Speaker 9: one's half of that, so we're almost quite. We're almost there,
- 7:02Speaker 9: which would be a normal marking point. Lance Berkman also
- 7:05Speaker 9: did it in two thousand and two, so Bagwell twice,
- 7:10Speaker 9: Berkman once, and now Alvarez has done it this year
- 7:14Speaker 9: for the Astros, who are three games back in an
- 7:18Speaker 9: AL West that is not no one is running away with.
- 7:24Speaker 9: Right now, Seattle holds the lead one game over five
- 7:26Speaker 9: hundred and forty and thirty nine in the league. The
- 7:29Speaker 9: Astros head on the road for their next two series.
- 7:32Speaker 9: They'll head to Toronto tonight and we'll have that game
- 7:38Speaker 9: right here pregame starting at five thirty five, right.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Here on the zone. And then Dell will.
- 7:44Speaker 9: Head from there to Detroit, which is kind of like Canada.
- 7:47Speaker 9: I mean, it's close, it's right there. If you go
- 7:52Speaker 9: south from Detroit, I understand you hit Canada. Now you
- 7:57Speaker 9: look baffled, But yeah, if you look at it on
- 7:59Speaker 9: a map you drive into windsor if you go straight
- 8:02Speaker 9: south out of Detroit, because it's kind of a weird
- 8:05Speaker 9: thing that it wraps around. So they will be in
- 8:09Speaker 9: Toronto and in Detroit for their next two series before
- 8:14Speaker 9: they come home to wrap up the month against Minnesota
- 8:19Speaker 9: for the And we're gonna have to talk more about
- 8:22Speaker 9: this when Rusty gets here, but I'll just give you
- 8:25Speaker 9: the highlights. The Rangers also win their series over the
- 8:31Speaker 9: weekend against San Diego. But more bad news for the Rangers,
- 8:39Speaker 9: or is it because he's kind of Jack Lder has
- 8:42Speaker 9: struggled a bit. He's been trying to work through a
- 8:45Speaker 9: problem with his ankle and lost all of his three
- 8:50Speaker 9: starts in June, had a nine point eight to eight ERA,
- 8:54Speaker 9: gave up seven hits and six runs in four innings
- 8:57Speaker 9: in the nine to three loss to Minnesota on Thursday,
- 9:00Speaker 9: Day three, and seven on the season in his fifteen starts.
- 9:04Speaker 9: He will head to the DL and still on the DL.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Segert is.
- 9:13Speaker 9: Still in percussion protocol and unsure when he will be
- 9:17Speaker 9: able to return from the disabled list. So injuries mounting
- 9:21Speaker 9: for the Texas Rangers, who said a game ahead of
- 9:26Speaker 9: the Astros thirty seven and forty on the season, only
- 9:30Speaker 9: two games back of the lead, so you know there's
- 9:35Speaker 9: still hope. Speaking of baseball, thoroughly enjoyed the champ Series
- 9:41Speaker 9: and we're going to discuss this more when Rusty gets here.
- 9:45Speaker 9: Most of these things we're going to go back to it.
- 9:47Speaker 9: But I want to give you the highlights if you
- 9:49Speaker 9: haven't kept up with the College World Series. With A
- 9:52Speaker 9: and M not playing in it so far this year,
- 9:56Speaker 9: Oklahoma jumps out to a nine to three win in
- 10:00Speaker 9: Game one. Oklahoma absolutely on fire since the season. The
- 10:05Speaker 9: regular season ended. The eleventh place team in the SEC
- 10:09Speaker 9: one game away from winning a national championship this year,
- 10:12Speaker 9: which is actually not that surprising. It's not uncommon for
- 10:18Speaker 9: a team a little bit back in the SEC standings
- 10:20Speaker 9: to make it to the Champs Series. They jump out
- 10:24Speaker 9: to a two to zero lead last night, had that
- 10:27Speaker 9: through a couple of innings. Was Xander Mercurius on the mound,
- 10:31Speaker 9: who was absolutely brilliant in his last outing. Doesn't go
- 10:36Speaker 9: as deep and this one ends up only getting four innings,
- 10:39Speaker 9: giving up five hits, four earned three walks, although he
- 10:44Speaker 9: did have once again eight strikeouts, eight strikeouts and four innings.
- 10:48Speaker 9: That guy sometimes looks like he's throwing a whiffle ball,
- 10:50Speaker 9: the way he can move that thing around up there.
- 10:54Speaker 9: It's been unbelievable. But gave up a home run, gave
- 10:59Speaker 9: up three in the third, one more in the fifth,
- 11:02Speaker 9: or one yeah, one more in the fifth before he
- 11:06Speaker 9: got pulled to give up his four and four innings
- 11:12Speaker 9: plus a plus a batter, and North Carolina wins that
- 11:18Speaker 9: game six to two. So tonight coming up at six o'clock,
- 11:25Speaker 9: the third and final game of the College World Series
- 11:28Speaker 9: North Carolina and oh you, and we'll find out if
- 11:31Speaker 9: that clock has struck midnight for Cinderella or if oh
- 11:36Speaker 9: you can go ahead and take this thing down because
- 11:38Speaker 9: they have played spectacular baseball at the right time of
- 11:43Speaker 9: the year. You watch golf, watch any golf. So with
- 11:50Speaker 9: everything else going on, didn't watch as much of the
- 11:56Speaker 9: US Open as normal. Caught a little bit of that
- 12:00Speaker 9: early at Shinnecock Hills, Wyndham. Clark wins it on Sunday,
- 12:09Speaker 9: goes in with a six game lead, finishes with a
- 12:12Speaker 9: I mean a six stroke lead, finishes with a one
- 12:15Speaker 9: stroke win, and got heckled all day long, just absolutely
- 12:22Speaker 9: got crushed fans cheering whenever he hit a bad ball,
- 12:28Speaker 9: rooting for a bad ball, cheering for the ball to
- 12:31Speaker 9: get further away from the hole. I mean, they were relentless. Now,
- 12:41Speaker 9: to be fair, when he walks up on eighteen and
- 12:46Speaker 9: he's just got a two putt to win the whole thing,
- 12:49Speaker 9: the fans are busy singing happy birthday, just got a
- 12:52Speaker 9: scheffler and not cheering him on. They were absolutely riding
- 12:57Speaker 9: him the entire day. And to be fair, he brings
- 13:05Speaker 9: it on himself. He's kind of got a reputation of
- 13:09Speaker 9: a guy who's had some outburst on the golf course,
- 13:15Speaker 9: likes to throw clubs, throw a little bit of a fit,
- 13:18Speaker 9: make a scene, get kicked out of one of the
- 13:20Speaker 9: clubs that he was playing in. So I mean, and
- 13:25Speaker 9: he said, well, some of it I do kind of
- 13:29Speaker 9: bring upon myself. So he was not a crowd favorite,
- 13:33Speaker 9: but it was his day and he had that big
- 13:36Speaker 9: lead going into the final day. Didn't let it, didn't
- 13:40Speaker 9: let all the jeers and the riding get to him,
- 13:43Speaker 9: and wins the US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
- 13:47Speaker 2: Over the weekend.
- 13:49Speaker 9: All right, got a few more things coming up, but
- 13:53Speaker 9: right now, let's do we have anything in this breakers
- 13:56Speaker 9: It's just a regular old break. Okay, we need to
- 13:59Speaker 9: get away for a break. Here listening to Chip Howard
- 14:01Speaker 9: Sports Talk minus Chip, I'm Dusty soon to be joined
- 14:04Speaker 9: by Rusty on.

- 14:37Speaker 3: Having Kanty and Michelle are unsportsman life.
- 14:40Speaker 11: There is an alternative universe with Lamar Jackson's side. He
- 14:44Speaker 11: doesn't like the course of action in Baltimore. He doesn't
- 14:46Speaker 11: think that the replacement that they brought in for John
- 14:48Speaker 11: Harbaugh is it upgrade. I do think that Lamar Jackson
- 14:52Speaker 11: is a sneaky candidate for an NBA style ask out.
- 14:55Speaker 11: When it comes to the prospects of playing somewhere.
- 14:58Speaker 6: Else, I'm a sportsmanlife.
- 15:00Speaker 12: Listen in weekday mornings from Fine to Adam issoone eleven
- 15:03Speaker 12: fifty am and ninety three point seven FM. O, Honey.
- 15:15Speaker 13: You love me.
- 15:17Speaker 9: I guess you know it's true.
- 15:21Speaker 10: Hope you me my love me just like hod you holl.
- 15:29Speaker 6: Me love me, holl me love me.
- 15:35Speaker 14: I ain't not nothing.
- 15:36Speaker 2: My love me.
- 15:39Speaker 6: Ain't dead.
- 15:40Speaker 9: We love you every day girl, watch your powered sports
- 15:46Speaker 9: talk with already more soccer talk than Chips ever had
- 15:50Speaker 9: on the show. But that's okay because I've got the
- 15:53Speaker 9: FIFA fever. I'm all over it. And if Bope heard
- 15:57Speaker 9: me call him out, throw down the gonelet. Since Messi
- 16:01Speaker 9: scored twice, he scored at the fourteen minute mark, France
- 16:05Speaker 9: now leads Iraq one to zero and Boppe just put
- 16:09Speaker 9: it in the back of the goal, so we're keeping up. Now.
- 16:13Speaker 9: That's only three in two games so far from Bope
- 16:16Speaker 9: because he scored two in the first. Messi's got five,
- 16:20Speaker 9: so he's he's got some work to do if he's
- 16:22Speaker 9: going to catch up. But this may be the game.
- 16:28Speaker 9: If he plays the whole time, they may they may
- 16:31Speaker 9: rest him.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Well you we'll see.
- 16:34Speaker 9: Obviously, you got to manage your players, because it's not
- 16:36Speaker 9: about once you secure your group, it's about what's gonna
- 16:42Speaker 9: happen in the knockout round. So do what do you
- 16:45Speaker 9: watch soccer at all? So a little bit all right,
- 16:48Speaker 9: So to me, I've said this, this is the most
- 16:52Speaker 9: US World Cup ever. So first of all, we start
- 16:56Speaker 9: with we get the first World Cup where they let
- 16:58Speaker 9: sixteen extra teams in. Right, they expanded it to forty
- 17:01Speaker 9: eight from thirty two and expanded the knockout from thirty
- 17:05Speaker 9: two to sixteen, so softened it up, let a lot
- 17:09Speaker 9: of other teams get a participation trophy on the way
- 17:11Speaker 9: to the same teams that are gonna win win because
- 17:15Speaker 9: you know, none of those extra sixteen are actually competing
- 17:17Speaker 9: for the championship. They're just making it in. It's like
- 17:20Speaker 9: it's like when the Big Ten wants to expand the
- 17:22Speaker 9: college football playoff to twenty four, is the twenty fourth
- 17:25Speaker 9: team going to win the national championship? They're not, I
- 17:31Speaker 9: would say in football even more so, they're not. You know,
- 17:37Speaker 9: could could you make a case that the fourteenth, fifteenth
- 17:42Speaker 9: or sixteenth most deserving team might actually be one of
- 17:46Speaker 9: the top ten, but you know, stubbed their toe early
- 17:49Speaker 9: and you know, had an extra extra loss that they
- 17:52Speaker 9: shouldn't have and they could still compete maybe, But I
- 17:56Speaker 9: can't make a case for the eighteenth, nineteenth, twentieth, twenty first.
- 18:01Speaker 9: I just I can't. There hasn't there hasn't been a
- 18:04Speaker 9: team in my memory of college football that would be
- 18:08Speaker 9: that far back that would actually have a chance to
- 18:10Speaker 9: compete for a championship and that So that's that's step
- 18:15Speaker 9: one of this being the this World Cup. But also
- 18:20Speaker 9: they added three minute commercial break halfway through the half.
- 18:23Speaker 9: I mean, then call a hydration break if you want, uh,
- 18:27Speaker 9: you know, but if you're playing an AT and T
- 18:31Speaker 9: stadium with the roof closed and the air conditioning on,
- 18:35Speaker 9: do you really need a three minute hydration break. No,
- 18:38Speaker 9: it's a commercial break, and we've added it to this
- 18:41Speaker 9: World Cup. But as I told somebody else, I'm in
- 18:45Speaker 9: I'm enjoying this World Cup. Like the Europeans coming over
- 18:49Speaker 9: and seeing BUCkies for the first time. They walked in,
- 18:52Speaker 9: they got a they got a brisket sandwich, walked out
- 18:55Speaker 9: that they thought they had good Texas barbecue. It's because
- 18:58Speaker 9: they didn't know any better. And I'm just like that
- 19:00Speaker 9: with with the soccer. I don't know any better. I'm
- 19:02Speaker 9: just enjoying the tasty bite, right. There's been plenty of
- 19:06Speaker 9: drama in most of these games. You know, some of
- 19:09Speaker 9: them have been blowouts, but most of them have been
- 19:12Speaker 9: good enough. And I'm learning things like when when the
- 19:16Speaker 9: US played their first game against Paraguay, I didn't know
- 19:20Speaker 9: that that you could actually get a yellow card for
- 19:23Speaker 9: flopping because soccer players flop around on you know, they're
- 19:28Speaker 9: they're drama queens. Okay, you know they're going for the
- 19:31Speaker 9: penalty all the time. You'll see him writhing around and
- 19:34Speaker 9: then if they don't get the call, they hop up
- 19:36Speaker 9: and run away like nothing happened. Every once in a while,
- 19:38Speaker 9: they're actually hurt, and you you definitely can get some injuries,
- 19:42Speaker 9: as we saw in the in the Canada game, uh
- 19:46Speaker 9: broke his bone, broke his leg and will not play
- 19:49Speaker 9: the rest of the way. So it does happen. But
- 19:53Speaker 9: Paraguay goes in. They give a yellow card to the
- 19:58Speaker 9: US for a tackle down near the end line. Video
- 20:04Speaker 9: review pulls it up and goes eh, They review it.
- 20:09Speaker 9: They look at it, Hey, no contact whatsoever. The guy
- 20:11Speaker 9: completely faked it. They took the yellow card away gave
- 20:14Speaker 9: it to the guy who flopped, and I thought that's
- 20:19Speaker 9: a good change for soccer. If there's absolutely no contact,
- 20:23Speaker 9: you should get in trouble for flopping around down there
- 20:25Speaker 9: on the ground trying to get the penalty near the
- 20:28Speaker 9: goal line. So I was happy with that. Now I
- 20:30Speaker 9: learned my second thing from soccer from a Paraguay game.
- 20:34Speaker 9: They're playing Turkey or Turkey A or I'm not exactly
- 20:38Speaker 9: sure how you say that, the new version of Turkey,
- 20:42Speaker 9: but they put an E on the end, so I
- 20:44Speaker 9: believe it's Turkey A. So there's a hard file and
- 20:51Speaker 9: there's some players yelling at each other. Now, let's be honest.
- 20:55Speaker 9: If you got the team from Paraguay and the team
- 20:57Speaker 9: from Turkey and they're yelling each other, they probably are
- 20:59Speaker 9: yelling in different languages, right, They probably don't even know
- 21:02Speaker 9: what the other one's saying to each other, but good enough.
- 21:06Speaker 9: But as they're yelling at each other, one of the
- 21:11Speaker 9: Paraguay players puts his hand over his mouth so you
- 21:13Speaker 9: can't lip read what he's saying. As he's saying something
- 21:16Speaker 9: to the other player. That's an automatic ejection. That's an
- 21:22Speaker 9: automatic red card, thrown out of the game. You're not
- 21:27Speaker 9: allowed to shield your mouth, so the lip readers can't say,
- 21:31Speaker 9: see what nasty words came out of your mouth? Now
- 21:34Speaker 9: breaking your leg, Oh, that's part of the game. But
- 21:38Speaker 9: saying a bad word and covering it up automatic ejection.
- 21:42Speaker 9: I didn't know that was a rule. So I'm finding
- 21:44Speaker 9: out things about soccer as I make my way through
- 21:48Speaker 9: this adventure that is the World Cup. That one was
- 21:51Speaker 9: a new one for me. The most other fun thing
- 21:55Speaker 9: we've seen from the World Cup is the mountains of Houston. Well,
- 22:00Speaker 9: I don't know if you if you followed this, but
- 22:04Speaker 9: the BBC, I guess, didn't have a good set with
- 22:08Speaker 9: a good backdrop, so they constructed a skyline and used
- 22:15Speaker 9: ai for a background to put behind, so it looked
- 22:19Speaker 9: like they were looking out over the skyline of Houston.
- 22:23Speaker 9: Not a problem. I actually kind of like it if
- 22:25Speaker 9: you can find the picture, because they just put a
- 22:28Speaker 9: little mountain range golf on one side, lots of water
- 22:33Speaker 9: mountains on the other side. Of course, there's really no
- 22:37Speaker 9: water next to Houston, not directly that you can see
- 22:40Speaker 9: from anywhere near NRG right, You're not going to see
- 22:44Speaker 9: the golf from there, and you're certainly not going to
- 22:46Speaker 9: see any mountains, because that was also completely made up.
- 22:50Speaker 9: But it was a nice view of Houston's skyline if
- 22:53Speaker 9: it were actually on the Gulf with mountains. So they've
- 22:58Speaker 9: taken some flock, and I I think it's a fun thing,
- 23:02Speaker 9: the Alps of Houston. We've seen some ridiculous memes come
- 23:06Speaker 9: out from that, but you know, I can enjoy fun.
- 23:10Speaker 9: And I looked at the picture they actually used and
- 23:12Speaker 9: I went, man, Houston would look a lot better if
- 23:14Speaker 9: it looked like that. But they actually have figured out, though,
- 23:19Speaker 9: is they can leave the stadium and drive from Houston
- 23:23Speaker 9: and two hours later they're still in Houston. That's that's
- 23:29Speaker 9: the thing the Europeans are finding out about the city
- 23:32Speaker 9: of Houston. But yeah, so Alps of Houston or Mountains
- 23:36Speaker 9: of Houston.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Just google that.
- 23:38Speaker 9: You can find the original picture, which was kind of subtle.
- 23:43Speaker 9: Most of the most of the memes that have come
- 23:45Speaker 9: out are a little less subtle. They've had a little snow,
- 23:50Speaker 9: little snow cap peaks, little taller mountains. But so I've
- 23:56Speaker 9: learned all sorts of things while watching a sport that
- 23:59Speaker 9: I know the basic rules of, but I don't know
- 24:02Speaker 9: a ton about. And it has been a blast really
- 24:06Speaker 9: to cover. Hey, when Rusty gets here in just a
- 24:10Speaker 9: little bit, We've got eight A and M legends that
- 24:15Speaker 9: are named to the Texas A and M Hall of
- 24:17Speaker 9: Fame Class of twenty twenty six, and we're going to
- 24:20Speaker 9: work through those.
- 24:22Speaker 2: I will give you.
- 24:23Speaker 9: The highlight, which to me is Miles Garrett.
- 24:29Speaker 2: In that list.
- 24:30Speaker 9: But we're gonna work through find out how many of
- 24:33Speaker 9: these players Rusty ever covered, because I'm gonna say at
- 24:36Speaker 9: least yeah, maybe only one of them is before his time,
- 24:42Speaker 9: and maybe a few others might have been slightly after,
- 24:47Speaker 9: but most of these were in the timeframe that Rusty
- 24:50Speaker 9: was covering A and M and putting out a magazine
- 24:53Speaker 9: and probably had some contact with other highlight on this
- 24:57Speaker 9: list is Terry Price, who will be going in the
- 25:00Speaker 9: Hall of Honor and getting his posthumous awards. So Hall
- 25:08Speaker 9: of Fame class coming up with Rusty as we work
- 25:11Speaker 9: through all of those eight names and his memories of
- 25:15Speaker 9: those players coming up here. So we're gonna get away
- 25:22Speaker 9: for another break, just as soccer is going to take
- 25:25Speaker 9: their hydration break. Or maybe it's just because the sprinklers
- 25:28Speaker 9: are on on the field, I'm not real sure. And
- 25:30Speaker 9: then We'll be joined by Rusty here on Chip Howard
- 25:32Speaker 9: Sports talk on the Zone.

- 28:59Speaker 9: Chip Sports Talk running as usual on a Monday, even
- 29:02Speaker 9: though Chip's not here. I'm Dusty joined by Rusty, so
- 29:06Speaker 9: it's Dusty and Rusty the rest of the way till
- 29:08Speaker 9: the Astros take over at five point thirty five. So
- 29:12Speaker 9: we're out about five point twenty five, is my understanding?
- 29:14Speaker 6: Gotcha? Gotcha?
- 29:16Speaker 2: So perfect?
- 29:17Speaker 6: Is his Mike on Astros at the Blue Jays to.
- 29:20Speaker 2: Night correct okay, right.
- 29:24Speaker 9: So hey, before we get to Astros and we've got
- 29:27Speaker 9: a couple of A and M stories to cover, talk
- 29:31Speaker 9: about the Rangers and their DL problems as they're struggling
- 29:37Speaker 9: to get back to five hundred. Seeger's still down with
- 29:41Speaker 9: a under concussion protocol. I believe his seven days are up,
- 29:45Speaker 9: but he's still not ready to come back.
- 29:47Speaker 6: Yeah, he has to pass tests.
- 29:50Speaker 18: One he has to pass an internal test by the Rangers,
- 29:52Speaker 18: and then the second he has to pass the test
- 29:55Speaker 18: that is given sternly by a medical professional, not association
- 30:01Speaker 18: associated with the team. So he has not been able
- 30:05Speaker 18: to pass that internal concussion protocol test yet. So it's
- 30:09Speaker 18: probably a matter of who knows, a couple of days.
- 30:14Speaker 18: But they really need to get him in the lineup.
- 30:16Speaker 18: They need to get him right if they're gonna have
- 30:18Speaker 18: any chance, because it's just I mean, they've had some
- 30:22Speaker 18: really good output from Josh Young and Ezekiel Durant and
- 30:27Speaker 18: you know, even Nemo. But you know, Seegers your horse,
- 30:33Speaker 18: and you know, without him, without him hitting the ball
- 30:36Speaker 18: like he's capable of, then yeah, it's gonna be a
- 30:39Speaker 18: long summer.
- 30:41Speaker 9: Right, I mean, they certainly need him. And now Jack
- 30:46Speaker 9: lighter who has not pitch well for a while.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Now.
- 30:49Speaker 18: Yeah, he's his last three starts ever since that Pittsburgh
- 30:54Speaker 18: game where he was backing up the throw and he
- 30:57Speaker 18: the throw got away from Nemo, so instead of back
- 31:00Speaker 18: a third, he's running towards the plate in front of
- 31:03Speaker 18: the dugout and he's watching the ball and he steps
- 31:07Speaker 18: on the batting donut and turns his ankle and he
- 31:12Speaker 18: kind of overcompensated. So it's the other ankle that's got
- 31:16Speaker 18: him on the d L right now or I L.
- 31:19Speaker 6: I'm old school DL.
- 31:22Speaker 18: But you know, the hope is that that's what's been
- 31:25Speaker 18: bothering him because you know, earlier this season he was
- 31:29Speaker 18: lights out and he was really looking like the guy
- 31:33Speaker 18: that well, you know, led Vandy to College World Series
- 31:37Speaker 18: and was so dominant there.
- 31:39Speaker 6: But he hasn't been that guy.
- 31:41Speaker 9: You pitch with your legs, yeah, you do.
- 31:43Speaker 18: You can't without an ankle, yeah, or without trouble in
- 31:46Speaker 18: your ankle.
- 31:47Speaker 6: That's that's really troublesome.
- 31:49Speaker 9: So he'll he'll go down, try and get that ankle
- 31:52Speaker 9: and depending fifteen days. Seems he's optimistic.
- 31:57Speaker 18: Right from a ranger standpoint, here's the really good news.
- 32:01Speaker 18: The Marlins, who they play right now, are above five hundred.
- 32:06Speaker 18: The Texas Rangers have the single best winning percentage in
- 32:10Speaker 18: the American League against teams with a winning record. They
- 32:13Speaker 18: have the single worst winning percentage in the American League
- 32:18Speaker 18: against teams the losing record.
- 32:19Speaker 9: Outside of that's baseball, Explain that to me. It's a bizarre.
- 32:23Speaker 18: I mean, it's baseball, you know, But I mean, they
- 32:26Speaker 18: had a horrible homestand they got swept by a terrible
- 32:31Speaker 18: Minnesota team, and then they take two hour three because
- 32:34Speaker 18: really good San Diego team, right, it doesn't make any
- 32:37Speaker 18: sense at all. And they've been so bad against teams
- 32:41Speaker 18: with losing records, and because they started off as the
- 32:44Speaker 18: year with a really brutal schedule and you know, they
- 32:48Speaker 18: went to Philly and Baltimore and you know, four and two,
- 32:51Speaker 18: and we'll look like, Okay, this is gonna be a
- 32:54Speaker 18: pretty good team.
- 32:54Speaker 6: And then they couldn't beat the Dogs.
- 32:57Speaker 18: They've been swept this year already by the Angels and
- 33:01Speaker 18: the Twins.
- 33:01Speaker 6: That's just she can't let that happen. That's embarrassing.
- 33:05Speaker 9: So they're bringing up Jose Corneille, Yeah not from Round Rock,
- 33:12Speaker 9: but the hope is that he may not start.
- 33:16Speaker 18: Yeah, the hope is that I don't know what they
- 33:21Speaker 18: do in this spot for lighter, but they're not very
- 33:24Speaker 18: far away from getting Jordan Montgomery, and they're not very
- 33:27Speaker 18: far away from.
- 33:28Speaker 6: Getting Cody Bradford.
- 33:29Speaker 18: And so if they can get those guys, then you're
- 33:33Speaker 18: talking about a surplus of really good arms. And I
- 33:36Speaker 18: don't know, Jordan Montgomery of twenty twenty three was fantastic
- 33:41Speaker 18: for the Rangers. Jordan Montgomery of twenty twenty four and
- 33:44Speaker 18: twenty twenty five in Arizona not so good. But you know,
- 33:48Speaker 18: back in Texas where he really felt at home and
- 33:51Speaker 18: was vital to the Rangers win that World Series, I
- 33:56Speaker 18: would think that early July that he'd ready and Cody
- 34:01Speaker 18: Bradford right right behind him.
- 34:03Speaker 9: And in the al West where no one's running away
- 34:06Speaker 9: with it.
- 34:06Speaker 18: No, you know, the Astros have won. I think the
- 34:09Speaker 18: Astros have played pretty well here re least lately that.
- 34:12Speaker 9: They've won three series in a row for the first
- 34:14Speaker 9: time this year.
- 34:15Speaker 18: Yeah, and I think I was looking at today, I
- 34:18Speaker 18: think they're seventeen and eleven in the last twenty eight,
- 34:21Speaker 18: which is I mean, if they could play that way
- 34:23Speaker 18: the rest.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Of the year, they can't.
- 34:25Speaker 18: Well, I don't think anybody in the AL West can, right,
- 34:29Speaker 18: But I'm still convinced that one of these teams is
- 34:31Speaker 18: going to go on a ten game winning streak at
- 34:34Speaker 18: some point and they're gonna run away with the division,
- 34:37Speaker 18: and that's gonna be all it takes. Really, I've seen
- 34:40Speaker 18: this happen so many times, and I mean I saw
- 34:43Speaker 18: it with twenty fifteen.
- 34:44Speaker 6: And sixteen Rangers.
- 34:45Speaker 18: They played pretty much below five hundred at five hundred,
- 34:49Speaker 18: but they had that really good streak. And even back
- 34:53Speaker 18: twenty twenty three, that was a below five hundred team
- 34:56Speaker 18: after the first sixty games, but they happened to go
- 35:00Speaker 18: for twenty in their first sixty. So you get hot
- 35:04Speaker 18: one of those teams, if the Astros, the Mariners, the Rangers,
- 35:09Speaker 18: even the A's, you know, I mean I I kind
- 35:14Speaker 18: of think it's more likely for either the Rangers, Astros
- 35:17Speaker 18: or Mariners.
- 35:19Speaker 6: But we'll see.
- 35:20Speaker 18: I wouldn't throw the Athletics out of this with the
- 35:24Speaker 18: AL West being so bad.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Now.
- 35:25Speaker 18: The other thing does is does it really matter?
- 35:27Speaker 9: I mean, you know, hey, ask Oklahoma, Yeah, ask Oklahoma
- 35:33Speaker 9: because they did not have a very good regular season. Well,
- 35:36Speaker 9: you're exactly right, and all of a sudden, they're playing
- 35:39Speaker 9: for a national championship tonight. If you get a seat
- 35:41Speaker 9: at the table, yeah, and you get hot for the
- 35:43Speaker 9: right three weeks, that's all that matters.
- 35:45Speaker 18: Well, And that's that was the twenty twenty three Rangers,
- 35:48Speaker 18: because they limped in the postseason.
- 35:49Speaker 9: But in twenty twenty three, nobody wanted to win that division, right,
- 35:53Speaker 9: wouldn't Everybody was kind of backing up.
- 35:55Speaker 6: And Astros and the Rangers back and forth.
- 35:58Speaker 9: Right, but but but backing up up, backing up nobody,
- 36:01Speaker 9: And finally.
- 36:03Speaker 18: Astros won that. But the Astros had the tie break correct,
- 36:08Speaker 18: and so.
- 36:08Speaker 9: That they had they had the chance to put it
- 36:10Speaker 9: away like six seven times, and and kept the thing
- 36:14Speaker 9: going well.
- 36:15Speaker 18: And then the Rangers didn't lose a single time on
- 36:17Speaker 18: the road. I mean right, it's playing that so I
- 36:21Speaker 18: mean eleven.
- 36:21Speaker 6: And zero in the road.
- 36:22Speaker 9: Yeah, when when when baseball happens and you got a
- 36:26Speaker 9: seat at the table, it's just a matter of where
- 36:29Speaker 9: how are you playing?
- 36:30Speaker 2: What those three weeks?
- 36:31Speaker 6: Exactly right?
- 36:32Speaker 18: Because I'll go back to twenty eleven when the Cardinals
- 36:35Speaker 18: beat the Rangers in the World Series. The Cardinals got
- 36:38Speaker 18: in the postseason on the last day. They got the
- 36:41Speaker 18: wild card on the last day of the regular season,
- 36:43Speaker 18: So you're right. I mean, if you get in there,
- 36:46Speaker 18: anybody can can get rolling. And I mean even the
- 36:49Speaker 18: Dodgers seem like kind of human this year. I mean,
- 36:53Speaker 18: like I say that they they're not the favorite still,
- 36:56Speaker 18: but there are some teams out there. Milwaukee's really uh
- 37:01Speaker 18: Miss that guy is untouchable right now for sure.
- 37:05Speaker 6: I mean he's something special.
- 37:06Speaker 18: I mean he's worth you know, if you if you've
- 37:09Speaker 18: got a chance to watch that guy, that's special.
- 37:13Speaker 9: As long as as long as he stays healthy, they're
- 37:15Speaker 9: in it that you know, well, as long as you've
- 37:17Speaker 9: got to stop rotation.
- 37:19Speaker 18: When you guys throwing one O four, I mean you
- 37:22Speaker 18: worry how long can you do it?
- 37:23Speaker 2: Right?
- 37:24Speaker 18: I mean there's only there's not There's not ever been
- 37:27Speaker 18: a really no one Ryan right that could do it
- 37:29Speaker 18: that good.
- 37:30Speaker 6: That h I've losty that long right.
- 37:34Speaker 9: Right, and most you know, in recent years, most of
- 37:36Speaker 9: your guys that throw that harder throwing.
- 37:38Speaker 18: In any yeah, yeah right, And I mean but just
- 37:41Speaker 18: right now, you look at some of the young pitchers
- 37:44Speaker 18: out there, you know, Schemes and Miss Bull those guys
- 37:49Speaker 18: are really fun to watch. And yeah, you know, like
- 37:53Speaker 18: Miller comes in, uh for the Padres and he's hitting
- 37:57Speaker 18: you know, casually. You know, he's their closer. And so
- 38:00Speaker 18: he was with with Oakland, you know, and was there
- 38:03Speaker 18: one piece.
- 38:04Speaker 6: And I can't get over saying Oakland.
- 38:06Speaker 18: He was with Oakland and when they were still in Oakland,
- 38:09Speaker 18: and so you know, that guy's consistently over one hundred
- 38:13Speaker 18: every time and it's effortless, just like how does he
- 38:16Speaker 18: throw it that hard and that accurate for the most part.
- 38:19Speaker 9: Yeah, and so a lot, a lot of fun. But
- 38:23Speaker 9: I just keep watching this al race and I'm going, Okay,
- 38:27Speaker 9: has this slump you know, right, has it hurt you?
- 38:32Speaker 9: And I look at the standings and go, Nope, No,
- 38:34Speaker 9: still in it. Get a guy healthy, get a guy back.
- 38:39Speaker 9: All of a sudden, because for both the Astros and
- 38:42Speaker 9: the Rangers, you're getting to the point where you're going,
- 38:46Speaker 9: am I selling or buying?
- 38:48Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 38:48Speaker 18: And I heard the Astros say that they're playing on
- 38:51Speaker 18: buying and the Rangers there.
- 38:54Speaker 6: They have said nothing definitive.
- 38:57Speaker 18: And it's still June, you know. That's that's the thing.
- 39:01Speaker 18: It's like it's June. It's like it's late June, but
- 39:04Speaker 18: it's still June.
- 39:06Speaker 9: Well, we're almost to the halfway point. Yeah, and so
- 39:09Speaker 9: a couple of games away. Yeah, it's just it's amazing, though,
- 39:13Speaker 9: you know, I think everybody will be at the halfway
- 39:16Speaker 9: point by the end of this week.
- 39:17Speaker 6: I'll tell you this does it.
- 39:18Speaker 18: After the Twins swept the Rangers, I like, well, that's it.
- 39:23Speaker 18: And then I look right here and the Rangers are
- 39:26Speaker 18: two back, Like what a miserable Homestand again I go back,
- 39:32Speaker 18: how do you get swept by the Angels and the Twins.
- 39:34Speaker 6: It's just it's just bad. And yet they're two games.
- 39:38Speaker 9: Out, and and it's finding because you're throwing different pitchers.
- 39:44Speaker 9: Like tonight, I think we're gonna have an experiment with
- 39:47Speaker 9: the Rangers.
- 39:48Speaker 18: Well, Tyler Alexander is going to be the opener for
- 39:51Speaker 18: Rocker and so they did that in Colorado.
- 39:56Speaker 6: Uh, and again it was the Rockies. I understand that.
- 39:59Speaker 18: But in the Marlin's right now, they're playing really good
- 40:02Speaker 18: baseball and I think they've won, well, they just swept
- 40:06Speaker 18: a series and they they're two games over five hunt
- 40:09Speaker 18: and so uh, but they're gonna Tyler Alexander be the
- 40:13Speaker 18: opener and then Rocker will come in the second because
- 40:16Speaker 18: Rocker has been awful in the first inning and he's
- 40:20Speaker 18: been really good outside the first inning. But oh, by
- 40:23Speaker 18: the way, the Brewers are forty six and twenty nine.
- 40:26Speaker 6: I mean.
- 40:28Speaker 18: They're they're right there with the Dodgers.
- 40:30Speaker 6: I mean they're they're.
- 40:31Speaker 9: Close, but they're not they're not in your in your division. No, no,
- 40:35Speaker 9: it doesn't matter, right, no, it doesn't matter.
- 40:37Speaker 6: But I'm just saying that.
- 40:38Speaker 18: You know, when you look at the National League versus
- 40:40Speaker 18: the American League, there's some really good teams in the
- 40:42Speaker 18: National League. And of course the Braves are playing really
- 40:45Speaker 18: good too, right, you know, the Yankees they're they're okay.
- 40:51Speaker 18: I mean, the American League is wide open. And by
- 40:55Speaker 18: the way, the the Indians, I'm not gonna call him
- 40:59Speaker 18: the Guardians, they're not that good.
- 41:03Speaker 9: You know, when whenever that's still when Guardians scrolls across
- 41:07Speaker 9: the screen, I think soccer. No wait, because I'm thinking
- 41:10Speaker 9: that's a sport I don't watch, and then you realize
- 41:13Speaker 9: it's baseball.
- 41:14Speaker 6: Right, There's some things I just refuse to change.
- 41:16Speaker 18: I'm not gonna stop calling the Redskins the Redskins.
- 41:19Speaker 6: I'm just not gonna do it. So, I mean, I'm old.
- 41:23Speaker 18: School, and I see, I'm not I don't like the
- 41:26Speaker 18: political correctness of it.
- 41:29Speaker 6: Just be your team and just let just play sports.
- 41:32Speaker 18: I don't want to hear your political I've got I
- 41:35Speaker 18: can change the channel if I want to hear political viewpoints, right,
- 41:40Speaker 18: don't change the team name. That's more insulting than it
- 41:43Speaker 18: is anything else. I just I don't get it.
- 41:46Speaker 9: Oh, it is pouring in the soccer game between France
- 41:51Speaker 9: and Iraq. Where are they playing in Philly? It is
- 41:53Speaker 9: coming down hard. We'll see if Inbope can catch up
- 41:58Speaker 9: with MESSI that's that's where watching to day.
- 42:01Speaker 18: Hey, I don't I don't know anything about soccer, but
- 42:03Speaker 18: I'm I'm always gonna root against Iraq or Iran. I
- 42:08Speaker 18: don't know anything about that, but I'm gonna.
- 42:10Speaker 6: Root against them.
- 42:12Speaker 9: I think you're gonna be safe today. I feel good
- 42:14Speaker 9: about France winning this game. Okay, So I mean, and
- 42:19Speaker 9: that's another one. I mean that means you're rooting for France.
- 42:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean they gave us a statue of liberty.
- 42:25Speaker 9: So okay, Hey, let's let's go back to baseball and
- 42:29Speaker 9: make it a little A and M related, because I
- 42:33Speaker 9: guess was that Friday or Saturday. I can't remember when
- 42:36Speaker 9: the news first broke. I guess Friday.
- 42:39Speaker 11: Uh.
- 42:40Speaker 9: It was first reported by Kendall Rodgers at D one Baseball,
- 42:45Speaker 9: and then Browny Will quickly confirmed that A and M
- 42:49Speaker 9: has hired assistant coach recruiting coordinator Nolan kin Away from
- 42:56Speaker 9: Texas following the end of the Texas baseball season and
- 43:01Speaker 9: brought in one of the best recruiters in the country
- 43:04Speaker 9: And they've been doing pretty well recruiting wise anyway, without
- 43:09Speaker 9: they've got some guys, right.
- 43:11Speaker 18: Yeah, I'm really excited about not just and in baseball,
- 43:19Speaker 18: but there for a while, it's hard. And when I'm
- 43:23Speaker 18: looking at the top three sports in my in most
- 43:26Speaker 18: of our viewpoint, so you're looking at football and men's
- 43:29Speaker 18: basketball in baseball.
- 43:31Speaker 9: Right any anything else is it's one of my sports.
- 43:36Speaker 9: But I realized that it's not one of the big
- 43:39Speaker 9: three sports.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:40Speaker 18: I loved watching that volleyball team this year. Sure, Oh
- 43:43Speaker 18: my gosh. I love watching him win go through the postseason.
- 43:45Speaker 2: Speaking of recruiting, he's done pretty well.
- 43:47Speaker 6: He's something else, isn't He.
- 43:49Speaker 9: Got a commitment from the number one player in the
- 43:51Speaker 9: country last week.
- 43:52Speaker 2: He's on a roll.
- 43:53Speaker 18: Yes, he is and great guy. Had a chance to
- 43:57Speaker 18: meet him several times. But going back to what I
- 43:59Speaker 18: was saying, like, there's been so many times in the
- 44:03Speaker 18: times that I've been associated with TEXA, A and M,
- 44:05Speaker 18: and I go back to the early nineties there where
- 44:08Speaker 18: he just didn't have a good feel about one coach
- 44:11Speaker 18: in one of those sports or one staff in one
- 44:14Speaker 18: of those sports, you know, like okay.
- 44:17Speaker 9: And when we had a good feel, when we thought
- 44:20Speaker 9: we had all three, it didn't work out.
- 44:22Speaker 18: It didn't work out, right, Yeah, So, I mean Billy
- 44:25Speaker 18: Clyde Gillespie was fantastic and I felt really good about
- 44:28Speaker 18: him being my coach, but they got so much attention
- 44:32Speaker 18: because oh that was the friend era, and I didn't
- 44:34Speaker 18: feel good about that right right or before Billy Clyde,
- 44:39Speaker 18: you know, we had great football coach in Narcie Slocan,
- 44:42Speaker 18: but then they had a guy named Melvin Watkins.
- 44:44Speaker 6: I didn't feel very good about that.
- 44:46Speaker 18: And then you know, I loved Mark Johnson for the
- 44:49Speaker 18: longest time. But you know, we've had really good baseball staffs,
- 44:55Speaker 18: and you know, I thought Jim Slosnage was the guy, right,
- 44:59Speaker 18: I mean.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Probably probably was.
- 45:02Speaker 18: And I remember driving home from Mamaha and my wife
- 45:04Speaker 18: saying it looks like Slashnaga was going to Texas and
- 45:07Speaker 18: I was like, no way, no way.
- 45:10Speaker 6: Did you hear him last night?
- 45:12Speaker 18: He said he left his family for this, and so
- 45:16Speaker 18: but flash forward. I love what michaelko is doing, Bucky McMillan,
- 45:23Speaker 18: I think, man, that guy is fantastic, and I love
- 45:26Speaker 18: his staff. And then early what he's done after that
- 45:31Speaker 18: very disappointing first year, to bring in Cliff Penson, like
- 45:36Speaker 18: one of the legends of a m baseball and a
- 45:39Speaker 18: really good coach and just a really I mean a
- 45:43Speaker 18: guy that's very relatable, and then to get No One
- 45:46Speaker 18: came back, and not only to get him back, but.
- 45:48Speaker 6: To get him back from Texas. Just I just I
- 45:52Speaker 6: love it.
- 45:53Speaker 18: I absolutely love it.
- 45:54Speaker 6: I feel really good about.
- 45:56Speaker 18: The direction of all three of those programs, and it's
- 46:00Speaker 18: I don't know if I've ever felt this good about
- 46:03Speaker 18: all three of them.
- 46:04Speaker 9: At the same time, I will say, Cliff Pennington, we
- 46:09Speaker 9: knew we were getting and we knew what kind of
- 46:11Speaker 9: coach he was on the college level. When we brought
- 46:14Speaker 9: in a Cliff Pennington, no question.
- 46:17Speaker 18: Well, we certainly knew the kind of guy he is, right.
- 46:19Speaker 9: But he had a coaching record coming up that you go, yeah,
- 46:24Speaker 9: this guy is going to be a big plus. Nolan
- 46:26Speaker 9: Kane's been on this staff before. We're familiar with him.
- 46:29Speaker 9: We knew what kind of guys he brought in, say
- 46:32Speaker 9: Gavin Gerhovac and Caden Cerell, just to name a few,
- 46:37Speaker 9: when when he was recruiting four A and M.
- 46:41Speaker 2: And then what I don't know is in.
- 46:44Speaker 9: Right, right, Yeah, I don't know, And it's it's it's
- 46:47Speaker 9: not that I have a negative feel about it, because
- 46:49Speaker 9: I don't. I mean, I like going out and grabbing
- 46:52Speaker 9: a guy from Major League Baseball to come in and
- 46:55Speaker 9: shore up your pitching staff and understand modern pitching and
- 47:00Speaker 9: everything that goes along with it. But I don't know
- 47:02Speaker 9: his track record.
- 47:02Speaker 6: I worry he's coming from the Angels. I'm kidding. I'm
- 47:07Speaker 6: absolutely kidding. I just I don't know much about.
- 47:09Speaker 9: Him right because he comes out of Major League Baseball.
- 47:13Speaker 9: It's you know, but early had time to go. He
- 47:19Speaker 9: knew he was replacing against pitching coach to decide who
- 47:24Speaker 9: he wanted to bring in, and that's who he decided
- 47:26Speaker 9: to bring in. And I think he's made good decisions
- 47:28Speaker 9: on that.
- 47:29Speaker 18: The familiarity I think is very very important because I
- 47:32Speaker 18: think one of the keys to Bucky McMillan's success here
- 47:36Speaker 18: early on is that.
- 47:38Speaker 19: He brought in guys who had been here before. He
- 47:41Speaker 19: brought in Mitch Cole, he brought in Kyle Keller, he
- 47:44Speaker 19: brought in Frank k I mean, these guys have been
- 47:46Speaker 19: here and they've coached here, and they know the Texas
- 47:49Speaker 19: high school coaches.
- 47:50Speaker 6: And they know you know.
- 47:51Speaker 19: So yeah, Bucky was from a smaller school in Alabama,
- 47:56Speaker 19: but he brought these.
- 47:57Speaker 6: Guys in with all these ties in.
- 47:59Speaker 18: It's the same thing as like you know, okay, Mike
- 48:01Speaker 18: Early is bringing guys in that know the program. I mean,
- 48:04Speaker 18: Clift Pennington knows the history.
- 48:06Speaker 9: He knows he knows all about it, knows all about it.
- 48:09Speaker 18: He knows what it means, you know, to beat Texas
- 48:11Speaker 18: and to play Texas and to get to you know,
- 48:14Speaker 18: the regionals and to play in big settings like that,
- 48:17Speaker 18: and then to play in.
- 48:18Speaker 6: The major leagues for a long time.
- 48:20Speaker 18: And so I mean, you can only imagine how great
- 48:26Speaker 18: it is to be coached by a guy like that
- 48:29Speaker 18: when you know the track record. He was a superstar
- 48:31Speaker 18: Texas A and m he got to where all these
- 48:34Speaker 18: guys want to go. And you know, I don't even remember. Remember,
- 48:37Speaker 18: I'm guessing his ten year career just off the top
- 48:39Speaker 18: of my head or something like that. Yeah, I played
- 48:42Speaker 18: with the Ayes, played Arizona, played I think in Toronto
- 48:46Speaker 18: a little bit.
- 48:47Speaker 6: So maybe I don't know.
- 48:48Speaker 18: I'll look it up and break, but I'm guessing ten
- 48:50Speaker 18: twelve years in the person.
- 48:52Speaker 9: Yeah, that's there, you go. So yeah, and I was
- 48:55Speaker 9: excited when I saw this news. You know, they went
- 48:59Speaker 9: all season with a short one assistant, right because this
- 49:03Speaker 9: spot's been open since January, and like they.
- 49:07Speaker 6: Knew something maybe yeah, maybe, you know.
- 49:10Speaker 9: I listened to Mike early today one Techaggs Live and
- 49:14Speaker 9: he said, you know, hey, season was over and I
- 49:18Speaker 9: was trying to make a decision where I wanted to go.
- 49:20Speaker 9: We're recruiting pretty well already. Do I want a recruiting coordinator?
- 49:24Speaker 9: And I said, and you know, he just said, I
- 49:28Speaker 9: can't see no one at a game sitting there and going.
- 49:30Speaker 9: I didn't even call and ask him. So I called
- 49:33Speaker 9: him and it was done in two days. Because they're friends, right,
- 49:36Speaker 9: I mean, I I know, and there's something there's something
- 49:39Speaker 9: to be said for having a guy that you've been
- 49:42Speaker 9: around before as a head coach, that you already have
- 49:45Speaker 9: some trust in.
- 49:46Speaker 6: Oh, yeah, they got the rapport that they have. Yeah,
- 49:48Speaker 6: and so.
- 49:51Speaker 18: He knows the kind of kids he wants to go get.
- 49:53Speaker 18: And so I'm I'm very, very excited about having no
- 49:56Speaker 18: one came and biastly, I'd say, he's got kids, and
- 50:00Speaker 18: so much rather raise my kids in broadcast stations than
- 50:03Speaker 18: I would in Austin, Texas.
- 50:04Speaker 2: Any day of the week.
- 50:05Speaker 9: All Right, I'm not paying attention to the clock and
- 50:07Speaker 9: I'm being told we're way behind, so it's time to
- 50:10Speaker 9: catch a break. Astro's report is brought to you by

- 51:36Speaker 2: Homer.
- 51:37Speaker 17: Isaac Peretis added the insurance run in the fourth with
- 51:39Speaker 17: an RBI single. Here's the long ball from Alvarez.
- 51:43Speaker 7: To two to yord Honor, and that's smoked deep to
- 51:45Speaker 7: right center Faield and you can't kiss that one. Goodbye

- 51:56Speaker 17: The Guardians responded with the lone fielder's choice run in
- 51:58Speaker 17: the fifth, but Houston's deft events would go on to
- 52:00Speaker 17: hold the fort for the win. The Astros have now
- 52:03Speaker 17: won four of their last five and are only three
- 52:05Speaker 17: games behind Seattle in the AL West. Next, Houston crosses

- 53:06Speaker 2: A canvas covered cabin in a crowded labor camp stand
- 53:16Speaker 2: out in this memory.
- 53:20Speaker 19: I required.
- 53:25Speaker 2: Cause my daddy rais the family.
- 53:29Speaker 16: There with two hard working.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Hands and tried to feed my mama's hungry eyes.
- 53:42Speaker 9: Chip Howard Sports Talk Monday edition without Chip, who I
- 53:47Speaker 9: believe is back tomorrow. I think I understood that correctly.
- 53:51Speaker 9: It's kind of hard to tell in the summer. Yeah yeah,
- 53:53Speaker 9: Chip chips a little in and out in the summer.
- 53:55Speaker 9: But you know there'll be somebody on here. It won't
- 53:58Speaker 9: be me and it won't be Rusty.
- 54:00Speaker 5: No.
- 54:01Speaker 9: This is this is this is a one day event.
- 54:03Speaker 9: So we're we're here for today and tonight there will
- 54:07Speaker 9: be a new champion in college baseball, either North Carolina
- 54:13Speaker 9: or OU. Kind of surprised when was the last.
- 54:16Speaker 2: OU lost Georgia.
- 54:19Speaker 6: In the region?
- 54:20Speaker 2: Okay, gotcha? Okay?
- 54:23Speaker 9: I knew it had been a while since they lost. Yea,
- 54:26Speaker 9: And the question, the question I have for you is
- 54:30Speaker 9: is it midnight for Cinderella, because that I mean, look,
- 54:33Speaker 9: they came from nowhere, they came from way back, and
- 54:36Speaker 9: have played some of the best baseball we've seen from
- 54:41Speaker 9: any team all year.
- 54:42Speaker 18: Well, yeah, I'm shocked by how well they've played. But
- 54:47Speaker 18: I don't think it's midnight necessarily because I mean, they
- 54:51Speaker 18: lost a game right after.
- 54:54Speaker 6: They lost that, that game of George Tech.
- 54:55Speaker 18: They didn't lose again for you know, a long time,
- 54:59Speaker 18: and playing really good, you know opposition.
- 55:02Speaker 9: Playing all the major conference champions, they had to go
- 55:05Speaker 9: through all of them.
- 55:06Speaker 18: So I'm very interested with this one tonight.
- 55:11Speaker 6: I think my my head said North Carolina.
- 55:17Speaker 18: And not that I like O you by any means,
- 55:20Speaker 18: but I do think down deep, maybe I think the SEC.
- 55:25Speaker 6: You know, just see the SEC win again.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Are they in it?
- 55:30Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a good question. It's a good question.
- 55:32Speaker 18: Does I mean, yeah, that's I still don't feel like
- 55:35Speaker 18: they're SEC, but I mean they they are part of
- 55:38Speaker 18: the league. I did, you know, and him opened the
- 55:42Speaker 18: conference play against them up there.
- 55:44Speaker 9: And so they hit well that weekend. Yeah, they did,
- 55:47Speaker 9: and then they went on a slump until postseason started.
- 55:50Speaker 2: Weird weekend because it was was howing.
- 55:52Speaker 18: Yeah, and so that that game and nobody strikes, nobody
- 55:56Speaker 18: could catch a pop up. You know, It's like the
- 55:59Speaker 18: win was crazy. But uh yeah, I don't know. I
- 56:04Speaker 18: think most of the country, if if you're not like
- 56:06Speaker 18: just a dead set I'm rooting for the SEC, is
- 56:09Speaker 18: probably rooting for North Carolina just because the SEC has
- 56:12Speaker 18: been so dominant for so long, and there it's the
- 56:15Speaker 18: most dominant sport. Now. I mean SEC had had some
- 56:19Speaker 18: great runs in football, but by far, this SEC is
- 56:23Speaker 18: the most dominant in baseball.
- 56:27Speaker 9: Well, the difference is they've been winning championships in baseball.
- 56:31Speaker 9: What are they having in football? They're The difference is
- 56:34Speaker 9: they're the deepest, they're the hardest grind in football, which
- 56:37Speaker 9: they are in baseball as well, but they're also the
- 56:40Speaker 9: best at the top end.
- 56:41Speaker 6: Well, there's you've.
- 56:42Speaker 18: Got four or five teams in the SEC who can
- 56:47Speaker 18: win a nast championship, right, I mean who have that pedigree?
- 56:50Speaker 6: Right?
- 56:51Speaker 18: So you've got LSU and you got Alabama, and you
- 56:53Speaker 18: got Georgia and you got Florida.
- 56:55Speaker 6: And who am I missing?
- 56:58Speaker 9: I don't know, a little team not far from here.
- 57:01Speaker 6: But A and M has not done anything like that.
- 57:04Speaker 9: No, No, I meant about Okay, so they have.
- 57:07Speaker 18: That pedigree, But in baseball you have the pedigree teams.
- 57:12Speaker 9: That have won it.
- 57:13Speaker 18: It's oh Vandy, Oh Florida, Georgia, I mean Mississippi, Mississippi State.
- 57:21Speaker 18: I mean it goes way deep, right, Texas obviously the
- 57:24Speaker 18: history that they have, but it's just so deep. And
- 57:30Speaker 18: that's the difference between you know, when you compare baseball
- 57:33Speaker 18: versus SEC football is like, Okay, Vanderbilt is never gonna win.
- 57:37Speaker 6: An SEC title in football. It's just not gonna happen.
- 57:41Speaker 6: It ain't gonna happen.
- 57:43Speaker 9: It is not gonna happen.
- 57:44Speaker 18: But they won a national title in baseball and a
- 57:48Speaker 18: couple and they've got a great program. And I don't
- 57:51Speaker 18: think Mississippi State is ever gonna win national championship in
- 57:54Speaker 18: football too, And they were top team in the nation
- 57:57Speaker 18: at one point when DAK was over there. But I
- 58:01Speaker 18: just there's no comparison. SEC baseball is just in a
- 58:05Speaker 18: league zone.
- 58:07Speaker 9: And the eleventh place team out of this year is
- 58:10Speaker 9: playing for a championship in to night against North Carolina
- 58:14Speaker 9: who speaking of catching pop ups, probably isn't in if Arizona.
- 58:19Speaker 2: State, yea can catch that foul ball. I don't know.
- 58:22Speaker 9: If you're watching that Super Super Game three, shortstop for
- 58:28Speaker 9: whatever reason, calls off the left fielder on a foul
- 58:30Speaker 9: ball has clearly got it, and then he he comes
- 58:33Speaker 9: nowhere close and then North Carolina comes back to win
- 58:36Speaker 9: it in the ninth inning. You know, but you catch
- 58:39Speaker 9: that ball. North Carolina is not even in the World Series.
- 58:43Speaker 6: I mean, that's baseball, right.
- 58:45Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, and that's that's the way it goes,
- 58:48Speaker 9: all right. Uh, that'll wrap up our number one of
- 58:51Speaker 9: Chip Howard's sports talk here on The Zone.
