Today on Living on the Edge with Chip Ingram.
0:14
Did you ever wonder why some of the most, I mean,
0:17
worst fights that you ever have are with people
0:21
that you love the most? I mean, what causes these
0:23
heated conflicts and hurt feelings and painful
0:27
words that really divide? Chances are the reasons
0:30
for our disputes are different than you might
0:33
think. Stay with us as we consider not only why
0:36
we fight, but how to defuse that conflict. I'm
0:40
Dave Drewy, and this is Living on the Edge with
0:42
Chip Ingram. James chapter 4 traces our worst
0:46
conflicts back to a single root cause, a consuming
0:49
craving for self -gratification. Today, Chip
0:52
gives us the cure. He lays out four clear, practical
0:56
steps toward humbling yourself before God and
0:59
shows us the promise attached to each one. If
1:02
there's a relationship in your life that needs
1:04
restoring, today's message is where you start.
1:07
And in case you need to revisit this lesson at
1:09
another time, just go to livingontheedge .org.
1:13
Well, now here's Chip with his message titled,
1:15
Why We Fight With Those We Love. Open your Bibles,
1:19
if you're not already there, to James chapter
1:21
four. He says, what is the source of quarrels
1:25
and conflicts among you? Rhetorical question.
1:27
Is not the source your pleasures that wage war
1:31
in your members or literally among you? You lust
1:35
and you do not have, so you commit murder. You
1:38
are envious and cannot obtain, so you fight and
1:40
quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask.
1:45
And you do not receive because you ask with the
1:47
wrong motives. Why? So that you can spend it
1:50
on yourself. The summary of that is the root
1:54
cause of interpersonal conflicts, according to
1:57
James, is our consuming passion for self -gratification.
2:01
Okay, that's the cause of quarrels. Now he's
2:05
gonna give us God's diagnosis. Our constant quarrels
2:09
reveal three different things. Verse four, you
2:13
adulteresses, do you not know that friendship
2:16
with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore,
2:20
whoever wishes to be a friend of the world, notice
2:22
this, makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you
2:27
not think that the scripture speaks to no purpose?
2:29
He jealously desires the spirit which he made
2:32
to dwell in us. But notice his response is, he
2:34
gives more grace. He gives more grace. Well,
2:37
how does he give the grace? Therefore it says,
2:39
and he quotes the Old Testament here, God is
2:41
opposed, literally he's anti, he's against the
2:43
proud, but he gives grace to the humble. Literally
2:47
he goes, adulteresses are unfaithful creatures.
2:50
Don't you know, circle the word friendship, will
2:53
you? That's our word phileo. It's the affection
2:55
with the world system and its sensual pleasures.
2:59
It means you are in hostility. You've become
3:02
an enemy or you're in hostility with God. You
3:05
make yourself an enemy. Then he goes on to say,
3:08
he yearns jealously for the spirit that he puts
3:11
within us. And this word, if you want to circle
3:14
through it, God opposes the proud. It's a picture
3:17
as you study this phrase of literally God going
3:20
into battle and putting on holy array in battle
3:23
to come against that which is opposed. to what's
3:28
good. And there are times in your life and there's
3:32
times in my life when we do that. Let's go back
3:35
and play out what the lie is then. He says we
3:39
believe the lie. The lie basically is hedonism.
3:43
And hedonism is a worldview that promises that
3:46
I will be fulfilled by pleasure. See, the lie
3:49
is fulfilling your sensual pleasure will deliver
3:55
significance, security, joy, and fulfillment.
3:58
That's hedonism. And that lie leads us to betray
4:01
a trust. And we become spiritual adulteresses.
4:07
I don't know anything that is happening in our
4:10
day that breaks God's heart more than a church
4:14
that has fallen in love with the world. And notice
4:17
what it says. He yearns jealously for the spirit
4:19
he made, but he gives more grace. Well, how does
4:21
he give more grace? It says here, we make ourselves
4:24
an enemy so he gives more grace. How does he
4:27
give more grace? He's opposed to the proud. What
4:29
did he say in the beginning was the core of interpersonal
4:32
problems? Pride, selfishness. What's God opposed
4:36
to? It means he's against. It doesn't mean he
4:38
tolerates it. It doesn't mean that he winks at
4:40
it. It doesn't mean that, well, you know, I'm
4:41
not really happy with this and I wish you could
4:43
kind of clean it up. It means he's against it.
4:45
When he's against it, that means he brings consequences,
4:49
not because he's down on you. Because he loves
4:52
you. See, this isn't theoretical. And the seduction
4:56
of the world is not something that you get hit
4:58
in the face and go, wow, I'm a worldly friend
5:00
of the world, Christian, and I may be, maybe
5:02
some of these difficult areas of my life really
5:04
have to do with, you know, I'm God's enemy and
5:07
I never thought about that. I don't think the
5:09
average born again, genuine believer in Jesus
5:12
Christ in America is waking up every one day
5:14
saying, you know, I know I really love God, but
5:16
I think I'm going to embrace the world. I think
5:18
I'm going to try and live just like they are
5:20
because I want all the negative consequences
5:21
and I want to be a terrible witness. And, you
5:23
know, my marriage, you know, who wants it to
5:25
last more than eight or 10 years anyway? And,
5:27
you know, all these sexual addictions and food
5:29
addictions, bulimia. I mean, you know, I mean,
5:31
these counselors need money. So if I, no one
5:35
does that. But that's where we're landing, people.
5:40
So what's the solution? He gives us the solution
5:43
where he gives us a prescription. And we're gonna
5:46
get the prescription in verses seven through
5:48
10. It is very direct. God's prescription is
5:51
humble yourself and God will heal your relationships.
5:54
Humble yourself and God will heal your relationships.
5:57
Write those two words, humble yourself and God
6:00
will, he'll restore. I'm gonna read this passage
6:05
and there are seven, actually 10 staccato verbs
6:10
that are commands. And by staccato, I mean it's
6:14
bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang. He's gonna
6:16
give us seven to 10 specific things that we need
6:20
to do that will be a picture of how to humble
6:23
yourself. You can circle the words, but number
6:25
one, submit, circle yourselves therefore to God.
6:29
Two, resist the devil and he'll flee from you.
6:33
Three, draw near to God. and he will draw near
6:37
to you. Four, cleanse your hands, you sinners.
6:41
And five, purify your hearts, you men of double
6:45
mind. Six, be wretched and mourn. Seven, weep.
6:51
Eight, let your laughter be turned to mourning
6:55
and your joy to dejection. Circle laughter. Ten,
7:00
humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will
7:04
exalt you. Submit. resist, draw near, cleanse,
7:10
purify, be miserable, mourn, weep, let your laughter
7:15
be turned or literally have your laughter turned
7:17
around. This isn't just don't laugh. This is
7:20
the haughty kind of laughter where people are
7:23
rejoicing and reveling in sin. That's the picture
7:25
of this word. And as you study those things,
7:30
what you see is it is developed in four clear
7:33
steps toward humility or to diffuse conflict.
7:38
Number one, Give in to God. Write that in the
7:42
line above there. Submit yourselves, therefore,
7:45
to God. The word submit here is in a tense of
7:48
the verb that has a sense of urgency. It's a
7:51
compound word, hupo, to be under, and taso, to
7:53
be under the rank. It's like falling into line
7:56
or rank in the military. It's to take God as
7:59
your commander, as your captain. It's a picture
8:01
of a group of military people all walking like
8:04
this, and you are out of step. What he's saying
8:06
is you're out of step with the Spirit. Well,
8:11
how do you get in step with the Spirit? Very,
8:13
very clearly, it is obey the known will of God
8:17
revealed in Scripture. Give in to God. Voluntarily,
8:24
from the heart, that's the idea. You might write
8:28
just one word after that. Give in to God. Put
8:31
an arrow and write the word surrender and put
8:33
a box around it. It's really what it is. Surrender.
8:37
Submit your will. Submit your future. Submit
8:41
your relationships. Submit your agenda. Submit
8:44
your desires. And you say, God, here's what I'm
8:47
going to do. I have unconsciously, I didn't mean
8:49
to, I didn't realize it. You brought me to this
8:51
place at this time to help reveal it. The light
8:53
bulbs are going off in my mind. My spirit is
8:55
so convicted. I want you to know right now, I
8:57
surrender. I submit to you. I want you to know
9:01
that as I begin to think about your word, and
9:04
I know it's going to be a journey, but I'm going
9:06
to submit my finances to you. I'm going to submit
9:08
my schedule to you. I'm going to submit my relationships,
9:11
my job, my ministry. I submit to you. You are
9:14
the general. You're the commanding officer. You're
9:16
the king. You're the CEO. And I'm coming for
9:19
orders. You tell me what to do. That's what I
9:21
want to do. That's the first step in humbling
9:24
yourself. It's obeying what you know. The second
9:28
step is get tough with Satan. Notice the word
9:34
resist the devil and he'll flee from you. Resist
9:38
has the prefix anti. It means to be against him
9:40
and to take a stand. It's to take a stand against
9:43
the enemy. There is no middle ground. You can't
9:46
play with him. And the word devil, I mean, who
9:49
is this? He's the slanderer, the liar, the deceiver.
9:52
He's the seducer. Has anyone seen a Forbes where
9:56
you can... go through a Forbes magazine and not
9:59
somehow feel like, man, if I was really, really
10:01
rich and I'd be really, really powerful, then
10:03
it'd be really, really important. You know, it's
10:05
different strokes for different folks. It's the
10:08
lust of the flesh for some. For others, it's
10:10
that magazine you look at and you see all those
10:12
beautiful houses and all that beautiful furniture
10:13
and all this, or that dream vacation. You could
10:16
go to Scotland, do this, and you go to this,
10:17
go to this, go to this. And it always go from
10:19
one thing to another. Yet, who's behind that?
10:22
Who's selling you the bill of goods if you had,
10:25
if you could, if you possessed, if you look like
10:27
that? If you just had enough money to have some
10:29
of those surgeries like they have on TV, then
10:31
you could walk down the staircase and all your
10:35
friends would go, ah, who is that? That's a woman
10:38
or a man who they've shaved off 35 pounds with
10:41
surgery and other 20 pounds with exercise and
10:44
they have poked, jabbed, pushed. I won't go any
10:48
farther than that. Made up, died. Broken jaws,
10:51
put in new teeth, rearrange noses, and under
10:56
special lighting for one moment. And here's my
11:01
theory. Visit that woman or that man in three
11:03
years, and they'll look exactly like they did
11:05
three years before. You're listening to Living
11:10

11:12

You'll find full video teachings there on marriage,
11:27

11:30

11:33
Well, now here's Chip with the rest of today's
11:35
message. Resist the devil and he'll flee from
11:38
you. Get tough with Satan, put an arrow, and
11:40
write the word fight and put a box around it.
11:42
You gotta fight. You gotta fight. Ephesians 6.
11:47
Tells us how to put on the full armor of God.
11:51
Look, it's a promise. If you resist, he'll flee.
11:55
But you gotta get angry with it. You gotta say,
11:57
I don't wanna be that. I don't wanna think of
11:59
that. You gotta say, no more internet for me.
12:01
I'm not gonna watch that stuff. You have to cut
12:03
off the supply lines. You gotta fight. You gotta
12:06
say, there's a world system. It is purposely
12:09
seeking to seduce me. And you've got to put up
12:13
the guard and the armor. And you've got to say
12:15
to yourself, you know what? I can't let that
12:17
in our home. I've got a good friend that had
12:20
a pornography problem. He just doesn't have the
12:21
internet. He just doesn't have it. You say, well,
12:25
that's drastic. Yeah, it's drastic. He's just
12:27
kind of saving his marriage, saving his life,
12:28
walking with God, changing his life. He just
12:30
happens to know he's weak. Where are you weak?
12:34
Where are you weak? In the area of media, I would
12:37
dare you to do something. You probably won't
12:39
do this, but I'll dare you anyway. Double, double
12:41
dare. I dare you to go on a media fast for 10
12:45
days. No TV, not even the news, 10 days. First
12:51
two days, you want to kill each other because
12:54
you'll be so irritable. And then you'll recognize
12:57
we actually spend hours that we didn't know in
13:00
front of this thing. Then pretty soon you'll
13:02
start getting creative and you'll have all kind
13:04
of time and start doing some things you always
13:05
wanted to do. About day number six through eight,
13:08
you'll start actually having some fun. Day number
13:10
nine, you won't miss it very much. Day number
13:12
10 or 11, you realize, oh, hey, and you'll start
13:14
watching something and you'll watch a commercial
13:16
and you go, oh man, that is, that is gross. Because
13:20
what will happen is you won't be dumbed down.
13:23
Your spiritual sensitivities will come back alive
13:25
and you'll realize, man, there's a hook in that
13:28
commercial. And did you notice how the camera
13:29
panned and went to that guy's body part or that
13:31
woman's body part? Did you see? And all of a
13:33
sudden, all those subliminal messages, your spirit
13:36
will pick them up and you'll fight and you'll
13:38
say, man, I'm not buying that stuff. But I tell
13:41
you what, The passive, I want to try harder,
13:44
be a better person someday, some way, will not
13:46
make it. Third, he says, draw near to God and
13:51
he'll draw near to you. Right in there, get close
13:53
to God. Get close to God and then draw an arrow
13:58
and in the box, write return. Return to God.
14:04
What he wants you to know, he loves you. He's
14:06
for you. He cares about you. Anything you think
14:09
the world and power or sex or pleasure or a boat
14:13
or a better golf score or what plastic surgery
14:16
could ever provide, Jesus says, it's all a lie.
14:20
It's all temporary. I love you just for you.
14:24
I have joy that circumstances can't change. I
14:27
want to give you something in your heart that's
14:29
called peace, not pseudo peace. I want you to
14:33
be able to sit in a room where you don't have
14:35
to turn on the TV or the stereo or run over to
14:37
the refrigerator every time you have a little
14:39
bit of unrest in your soul. I want to give you
14:41
joy that even when bad news happens, it wells
14:43
up in you. I want to love you. I want to care
14:47
for you. I want to tie you into me and let you
14:50
understand where real life comes, abundant life
14:54
to the full. Isn't that what he promised? I came
14:57
that you might have life and you could have it
14:58
to the max. This isn't like getting second rate
15:02
stuff. This is like seeing the junk for what
15:05
it is, and then you negatively, you got to fight,
15:09
but then you draw near to God, you return. And
15:12
what's the promise say? He'll draw near to you.
15:16
Isn't that awesome? This is the picture of the
15:19
prodigal and the father. You know, he didn't
15:21
run after the prodigal, did he? He allowed the
15:24
consequences to get in the prodigal's life. By
15:27
the time the kid is eating the pig slop, he finally
15:30
has an aha moment. This ain't good. The slaves
15:35
have it better. But the moment he returned the
15:39
word, right, and began to come back to the father,
15:41
what did the father do? Study that passage carefully.
15:45
He does a number of things that break culture.
15:47
He runs to meet. That means he had to pick up
15:49
his robe. That means he embarrassed himself in
15:52
the city. He ran to meet his son. God wants to
15:57
run to meet some of you. And some of you are
16:00
so overwhelmed with guilt and got so much baggage
16:04
and so much junk and feel like you're so unworthy
16:07
and you've been through so much. He's a God of
16:09
grace. If you've fallen into a 15 -foot hole,
16:13
He will lower a 16 -foot rope. And if you've
16:17
fallen into a 300 -foot hole and you can say,
16:19
I had two abortions. I've had four marriages.
16:21
I'm a perpetual liar. I'm stealing from the company
16:23
right now. My whole life is a mess. I'm 300 feet
16:26
of just dirt and I feel like a terrible person.
16:29
God said, I brought you here because I have a
16:32
301 -foot rope. Just grab it, babe. I love you.
16:37
I love you. I died for you. I have a plan for
16:40
you. I want to restore you. Well, how do you
16:43
draw near to God? It's not just an emotional
16:45
experience. How do you draw near to God? Well,
16:48
since many of you are on that media fast because
16:50
I double -doubled aired you and some of you can't
16:51
resist that, with all this time, you know what
16:54
you'll find? Just start reading through the New
16:55
Testament. Just start taking walks instead of
16:58
watching TV and talk to God. And when you're
17:01
hurt, tell him you're hurt. When you're angry,
17:02
just express it and tell him you're angry. Then
17:04
the things and the needs that you don't have,
17:06
ask him for. Get in the scriptures, begin to
17:09
pray. And then, you know what? Every New Testament
17:11
command I can find is in the second person plural.
17:14
There might be an exception or two. That means
17:15
I'm never expected to live this radical New Testament
17:18
revolutionary life alone. I gotta do it with
17:20
people. And you get in the scriptures and you
17:24
begin to pray and you get with some people that
17:26
are making progress with the Lord and you find
17:29
some music and a Bible teaching church that teaches
17:33
the word and lives authentic lives. And you know
17:36
what? You're drawing near to God. He's gonna
17:37
draw near to you. And all the things you thought
17:40
that we're gonna deliver through your hedonism,
17:43
that you're being brainwashed like I'm being
17:44
brainwashed day after day after day, God says,
17:47
I'm gonna give you better and lasting both now
17:50
and forever. The final thing he says is get right
17:53
with others. Notice the phrase here, cleanse
17:56
your hands, purify your hearts. You know what?
17:59
That's the outward. What are you doing with your
18:02
hands that is wrong? Cleanse them. Then not just
18:04
externally, but internally, purify your hearts.
18:06
Where are your motives? Let there be tears for
18:09
the wrong that you've done. And so there's a
18:11
private purification. Where you cleanse your
18:14
hands. And you know what it is? You don't hear
18:16
this much anymore. Are you ready for this? Some
18:18
of you, a number of things have come up in your
18:19
mind. I've just sort of thrown a few little bombs
18:21
out. Have you noticed? You know, the soaps over
18:24
here, romance novels over here, pornography over
18:27
here, materialism. Just in case you missed the
18:29
bombs. This is a review. All right? All right?
18:32
A little bitterness in your heart, unforgiveness
18:34
toward an ex, toward a mom, a dad, one of your
18:36
kids, right? You know what cleanse your hands,
18:39
purify your hearts is? Stop sinning. Stop it.
18:44
Okay, you ready? I'm gonna do this again. It's
18:46
very complicated. Stop sinning. I mean, we get
18:50
this like, yeah, I will, you know, I'm gonna
18:52
have to process this, maybe see my counselor.
18:54
You know what? Is it wrong? Stop it. Repent.
18:59
That's the word. Right. Get right with others.
19:04
Arrow in a box, then right. Repent. Now, do you
19:08
need help? Yeah. Do you need to see a pastor
19:11
or a friend? But if you have wronged someone,
19:14
Make it right. Cleanse your hands. If you have
19:17
bitterness in your heart, if you have resentment,
19:19
if you have anger fantasies, purify your heart.
19:23
Purge it. Tell God you're sorry. If you need
19:25
to apologize to someone, go apologize to them.
19:28
But just say, I'm gonna get right with God. I'm
19:32
gonna get right with others. Then notice the
19:35
final thing he says in verse 10. He says, humble
19:38
yourself therefore under the mighty hand of God.
19:41
Why? That he may Exalt you. He's told us that
19:48
the problem is interpersonal relationships, that
19:50
it's really selfishness. He said the lie that
19:53
we've believed is hedonism, the whole pleasure
19:55
mentality, the playboy mentality of our day.
19:58
But he says, you know something? Submit to God,
20:01
resist the devil, draw near to God, and then
20:06
get right with others. And then he says that
20:08
is the actions of humbling yourself before God.
20:11
And here's what he'll, he wants to literally,
20:14
here's the word. He wants to lift you up. He
20:17
wants to restore you. I wish I had time to go
20:20
over couple after couple after couple and men
20:23
who've had 20 years of pornography, internet
20:26
addiction and people that have been on drugs
20:29
in the places I've had the privilege of pastor
20:31
where I've watched them humble themselves, come
20:34
and say, God, I'm bankrupt and do exactly what
20:37
we've talked about here. And the Lord has weaned
20:40
them from the world and they've been returned.
20:43
to their first love, the Lord Jesus. And is it
20:45
easy? No. Is it humbling? You know, some of you
20:48
are thinking, well, if I made it right, I might
20:50
have to go, like, actually apologize to someone,
20:53
like an ex -mate or an ex -boss. This could go
20:55
public. This would be humiliating. Humiliation
21:01
comes from the same root word as humble. You
21:05
see, when we finally get to where it ain't about
21:08
me and it ain't about you, is let's just be right.
21:12
You know, people don't think any of us are near
21:14
as good as we think they think they are anyway,
21:16
right? I mean, we're all projecting a little
21:19
bit better and most of us see through what we're
21:21
projecting. It takes more energy to hide and
21:24
cover and project that we're better than it does
21:26
to come absolutely clean and say, I blew it.
21:29
I was wrong. I'm sorry. God has forgiven me.
21:33
And I'd like, would you? And you know what I
21:35
find? People are pretty merciful with people
21:39
that are humble. You're listening to Living on
21:44
the Edge with Chip Ingram and a message titled,
21:46
Why We Fight With Those We Love. You can find
21:49
today's lesson online at livingontheedge .org.
21:53
Everything Chip walked us through today comes
21:55
down to the same call as everything else in this
21:58
series. Loving people well takes an actual decision,
22:02
not just an intention. That's the whole case
22:05
behind Chip's book, I Choose Love. It unpacks
22:08
what the Bible means by agape love. and gives
22:11
you a practical way to start living it out with
22:13
the people right in front of you. Get your copy
22:15
of I Choose Love at a special price today at
22:18
livingontheedge .org. You know, we hear from
22:23
listeners all the time about what happens when
22:25
they actually put teaching like this into practice.
22:28
One woman wrote in about the anger she'd carried
22:30
for years, chasing the approval of the people
22:33
around her. Anger that was, in her own words,
22:36
ruining some of her closest relationships. Learning
22:39
that she already has God's approval, she said
22:42
changed everything, and it actually restored
22:44
her relationship with her daughter. I can't imagine,
22:47
she wrote, where we would be if I had not participated
22:50
in the program. Well, that kind of restoration
22:53
is exactly what this ministry is about, and it's
22:56
only possible because listeners like you keep
22:58
it going. Give generously today and help this
23:01
kind of practical biblical teaching reach the
23:03
next relationship that needs exactly this. Give

23:17
Box 3007, Sewanee, Georgia, 30024. Well, now
23:23
here's Chip. As we close today's program, there
23:26
are four specific steps toward humility. And
23:29
the promise is when you humble yourself, God
23:32
will lift you up. He will help you. Let me review
23:35
them quickly. Number one, give in to God. Submit
23:39
yourselves, therefore, to God. The key word is
23:42
surrender. Second, get tough with Satan. Resist
23:47
the devil and he'll flee from you. You may need
23:50
some help on what that looks like and how to
23:52
do it. Number three, get close to God. The promise,
23:56
draw near to God and he'll draw near to you.
23:58
Open the scriptures, read the Psalms, cry out
24:01
to God. He longs to help you in your pain. And
24:05
number four, get right with others. Repent. If
24:07
you need to make something right, make it right.
24:09
This is one of those messages you need to get
24:12
the notes, download them for free, and then you
24:15
can walk through it. There's discussion questions
24:17
and an outline that will help you. put this into
24:20
practice. Father, I pray for those in conflict
24:23
who need to take the first step that they'll
24:26
go to the web today and they'll hear your voice
24:28
and begin to put into practice what it looks
24:30
like to humble themselves so that you can lift
24:33
them up. In Jesus' name, amen. Again, our website
24:37
is livingontheedge .org. Well, next time Chip
24:41
turns to a subject most of us would rather not
24:43
talk about, the words we use about other people.
24:47
