- 0:00Good afternoon.
- 0:08I I've met quite a few of you this morning.
- 0:10~ for those of you that don't know me,
- 0:12I'm Logan Pate. ~ beautiful wife is Laura Sue and her two girls,
- 0:17~ Remy and Quincy.
- 0:20~ just started over at MSOP.
- 0:24~ today we're gonna start out over in John 9.
- 0:33That's gonna be mostly where we're where we're reading out of today.
- 0:37we'll float around from there a little bit.
- 0:44Set up here.
- 0:55Mm-hmm.
- 1:00Then naturally coming from MSOP,
- 1:02I'm gonna be mostly out of the ~ King James Version.
- 1:06So ~ I have a couple scriptures that will be over in the New Standard.
- 1:13But and as Jesus passed,
- 1:16he saw a man which was blind from his birth,
- 1:20and his disciples asked him, saying,
- 1:23Master, who did sin? This man or his parents?
- 1:28That he was born blind. Jesus answered,
- 1:31Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents,
- 1:34but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
- 1:40~ today we're gonna talk about,
- 1:45we're gonna have seven different points to make.
- 1:48~
- 1:53There is a question that naturally rises
- 1:59with our pain and suffering. maybe not all of us,
- 2:06but I would dare say a lot of us have at some point
- 2:11in our life begged the question,
- 2:15why? Why me,
- 2:18why now, why the suffering?
- 2:23Why would I God put me in this position?
- 2:26~ there's a lot of questions that come from that,
- 2:30from misunderstanding, from the suffering we feel,
- 2:37the guilt.
- 2:41Going back to the text, the disciples see the blind man and immediately assume that
- 2:48there must be a reason rooted in guilt.
- 2:52Someone must have failed, sinned,
- 2:55or been at fault to cause such suffering.
- 2:58We often assume suffering to be something to escape.
- 3:04Something to explain away, and sometimes that God must
- 3:09be displeased with us. But Jesus reframes this entire conversation.
- 3:15He does not explain suffering as punishment,
- 3:18he reveals suffering as purposeful grounds for God's work.
- 3:25As we get into this, we are going to go over these six major points investigating
- 3:31~ Jesus' stance on pain.
- 3:36the first point to I have to make Jesus rejects
- 3:42the theology that blames the broken.
- 3:45John 9 2 through 3.
- 3:51~ going back to
- 3:55Our original ~ text here,
- 3:58and his disciples asked him, saying,
- 4:00Master who did sin, this man or his parents,
- 4:03that he was born blind. Jesus answered,
- 4:06Neither has this man sinned nor his parents,
- 4:09but that the works of God should be made manifested in him.
- 4:12This statement is no small correlation.
- 4:16It's a the theological earthquake.
- 4:19Jesus dismantles the idea that all suffering is a direct result
- 4:25of personal suffering.
- 4:25Sin. ~ We can find confirmation in that
- 4:30in multiple places throughout the scripture.
- 4:33~ All throughout Job chapter one and two,
- 4:38Job suffers not because of his sin,
- 4:42but because of his faithfulness.
- 4:45~
- 4:55In Luke thirteen, one through five,
- 4:58Jesus rejects the idea that tragedy proves guilt and that
- 5:04we are all guilty.
- 5:10Let's see.
- 5:15Luke thirteen, one through five,
- 5:16there were present at the person some that told him of the Galileans,
- 5:22whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
- 5:26And Jesus answering said unto them,
- 5:29Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all Galileans,
- 5:34because they suffered such things.
- 5:36I tell you, nay, but accept ye repent.
- 5:42Ye shall all likewise perish, or those eighteen upon whom the tower
- 5:47of Siloam fell and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above
- 5:54all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
- 5:56I tell you, nay, but except ye repent,
- 6:00ye shall likewise perish.
- 6:07This gives us the ideology that we're all sinners.
- 6:10It doesn't it doesn't matter whether one
- 6:16of us has greater sins than the other.
- 6:24My point number two, suffering can exist long before purpose is revealed.
- 6:28This was the blind man from birth.
- 6:32He was blind from birth.
- 6:36a lot of people don't really take the time to think about what that truly means
- 6:43~ when reading that text. We get a lot of the time focused on
- 6:48the actual miracle of
- 6:53Of Jesus healing him, which is absolutely not to be ignored.
- 6:58But looking at his history also gives us the gravity
- 7:04of the situation. ~ the blind man
- 7:09has never seen color. He's never looked upon the face of his mother.
- 7:14He's never seen the faces of them or those around him.
- 7:21And he's never had memories of sight.
- 7:25He was blind from birth. He never remembered what it
- 7:29was like to see the trees,
- 7:33see his family, none of that. ~ and nowhere in
- 7:39the text does it suggest he understood why.
- 7:43God's purpose was unfolding in him from before he was even born.
- 7:51Supporting scriptures for that God works in all things for good.
- 7:56~ Romans eight twenty eight.
- 8:08Romans eight twenty eight And we know that all things work together for good
- 8:13to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
- 8:32If you look at also Isaiah 55,
- 8:358 through 9, God God's ways are higher than ours.
- 8:40And then Psalm 139,
- 8:4316, God's plans precede our awareness.
- 8:49Psalm 139, 16.
- 8:52We'll flip over there real quick.
- 9:09Thine eyes did see my substance,
- 9:11yet being unperfect, and in thy book all my members were written,
- 9:16which in continuance were fashioned,
- 9:19then as yet there was none of them.
- 9:25And knowing and nowhere in the text the uncond comfortable truth
- 9:31we we face ~ with with that recollection
- 9:38is that purpose does not require our understanding to be real.
- 9:42~ our suffering,
- 9:46we don't have to understand it for God to have purpose in it.
- 9:49~
- 9:52The blind man he had no idea what was the purpose of his suffering until that moment
- 9:58Jesus talked to him and called on him.
- 10:00~ he spent his wh whole life wondering.
- 10:08And God isn't going to wait for us to understand before he sets
- 10:13his plan into motion. The blind man's suffering
- 10:17was meaningful long before he was healed.
- 10:20My third point: Jesus enters the pain.
- 10:24He does not just observe it from a distance.
- 10:29When we drop down a little farther in John nine to verse six,
- 10:34when he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle,
- 10:40and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay.
- 10:45Jesus could have spoken healing him from afar.
- 10:49He didn't have to get his hands dirty.
- 10:53He didn't have to go to him. He didn't have to lay hands on his eyes.
- 10:59But instead he he kneels, he gets his hands dirty,
- 11:03and he touches our place of pain.
- 11:10In Hebrews four fifteen, we see how he sympathizes with our weakness.
- 11:21Hebrews four fifteen for we have not on a high priest which cannot be touched with
- 11:27a feeling of our infirm infirmities infirmities,
- 11:33sorry, but was in all points tempted like as we are,
- 11:38yet without sin.
- 11:45And John one fourteen
- 11:53John 1.14, and the word was made flesh and dwelt among us.
- 11:59And we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten
- 12:06of the Father, full of grace and truth.
- 12:15Suffering is not proof that God is absent.
- 12:17Sometimes it's proof that He is near.
- 12:21Working in deeper ways than we can than just what we can see.
- 12:26a lot of the time we we get into that mentality that
- 12:34when we're going through suffering,
- 12:36it's because ~
- 12:39God's absence, it's that we can sometimes feel like it's a reflection on our faith.
- 12:45that there's a problem with us or with our situation.
- 12:52~ and there's there's instances where ~
- 12:59We just don't understand. There's some really rough things that people
- 13:04go through and I'm sure a lot of you have been through that
- 13:10we just can't find explanation for sometimes.
- 13:13but ~ the point number four,
- 13:18healing does not require difficulty,
- 13:21it redirects it. The miracle did not end the man's hardship.
- 13:30After he was healed, he didn't just
- 13:35go on through his life having a perfect life.
- 13:39~ once he was healed,
- 13:43he was actually questioned. He was doubted by those around
- 13:48him and not only doubted, but he was pressured to deny Christ.
- 13:54And in John 9:34,
- 14:00They knocked they actually kicked him out of town for his faith,
- 14:05even though he was he got healed.
- 14:08Everyone had seen it. His neighbors that had known him since since birth,
- 14:14that had known he was he was blind,
- 14:17you know, there was it was impossible.
- 14:22For to see him with sight, and yet they still found a way to blame Christ,
- 14:28and ended up kicking him out of town.
- 14:30John 934.
- 14:33They answered and said unto him,
- 14:36Thou wast altogether born in sins,
- 14:40and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
- 14:44Verse 35. Jesus heard that they had cast him out.
- 14:50And when he had found him, he said unto him,
- 14:53Dost thou believe in the Son of God?
- 14:56He answered and said, Who is he,
- 14:58Lord, that I might believe in him?
- 15:01And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him,
- 15:05and is he that talketh with thee.
- 15:08And he said, Lord, I believe, and he worshipped him.
- 15:15I couldn't imagine being in that situation being
- 15:23healed in a manner that was you know,
- 15:28n never expected, ~ going through your whole life with the expectation and
- 15:38probably the hopelessness that it's never going to be fixed.
- 15:43that there's no there's no way out of it.
- 15:47It's something that this is this is what it is.
- 15:50This is my life and I need to,
- 15:52you know, find a way to make the best of it.
- 15:55And being confronted with such
- 16:01a feat of healing and then
- 16:06Asking who is this Lord that you sp that I've heard
- 16:11of that you're able to do these things through
- 16:14and finding out that he's standing in front of you,
- 16:20that the one that was able to completely change your life
- 16:27to to
- 16:30shift your entire existence to have him standing right in front of you.
- 16:36I could not imagine what that must have felt like for him.
- 16:42And I want you to notice his response
- 16:47to those that did have skepticism in John 925.
- 17:02Just a second to get over there.
- 17:04He answered and said,
- 17:07Whether he is a sinner or not,
- 17:09I don't know. One thing I do know that though I was blind,
- 17:16now I see. Then they said unto him,
- 17:19What did he do to you?
- 17:22How did he open that your eyes?
- 17:25And he answered them, I told you already,
- 17:28and you did not listen and
- 17:31Why do you want to hear it again?
- 17:33Do you also want to become his disciple?
- 17:36Then they reviled him and said,
- 17:39You are his disciple, but we are Moses' disciples.
- 17:43We know that God spoke to Moses as for the fellow,
- 17:47as for this fellow, we do not know where he is from.
- 17:51And the man answered and said to them,
- 17:55Why, this is a marvelous thing.
- 18:00that you do not know where he is from.
- 18:02Yet he has opened my eyes. Now we know
- 18:07That God does not hear sinners,
- 18:10but if any one is a worshipper of God and does his will,
- 18:14then he will hear them. Since the world began,
- 18:18it has been unheard of that any one opened eyes of one who was born blind.
- 18:25If this man were not from God,
- 18:27he could do nothing. And they answered and said to him,
- 18:32You were completely born in sins and
- 18:36and are you teaching us? And they cast him out.
- 18:48There is a lot of power in testimony
- 18:54if it is about the power of Christ and not centered on ourselves.
- 19:07God often allows for our suffering so that our faith
- 19:12is not just theoretic but visible
- 19:18and more deeply meaningful. A daring invitation
- 19:23to shift the view suffering as assignment.
- 19:28Jesus says in 9 4, I must work the works of Him who sent
- 19:35me while it is day.
- 19:38Suffering does not pause God's mission,
- 19:41it advances it. I personally ask you today,
- 19:45when you go through suffering,
- 19:47to try and shift your manner of this thinking,
- 19:50from why did he do this to me,
- 19:54to what can I do for him? How can I
- 20:00be used to spread the glory of God through my suffering?
- 20:04Suffering is not just something to endure,
- 20:08but something through which God intends to work through us,
- 20:12to deepen our compassion, to mature our faith,
- 20:17and to point others to faith.
- 20:23Turning over to James chapter 1,
- 20:25verses 2 through 4. James 1,
- 20:312 through 4, count it all joy,
- 20:34my brothers. When you meet trials of various kinds,
- 20:38for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
- 20:42And let steadfastness have its full effect,
- 20:46that you may be perfect and complete,
- 20:49lacking nothing.
- 20:55God doesn't give us a rejection of pain,
- 20:57He gives us a rejuvenation of the soul.
- 21:09I do not recall ever learning from
- 21:14the scripture that our lives were going
- 21:20to be without transgression or without pain,
- 21:24without suffering.
- 21:27The life of a Christian is
- 21:32not the easy path. It is
- 21:38the straight and narrow. It is something that not many people choose to take.
- 21:45And it is a choice. It's something we have to choose to take.
- 21:50And it's not an easy road.
- 21:54It's it's something that takes work,
- 21:58takes ~ effort and takes perseverance.
- 22:09A little bit later, Jesus finds this man again in John thirty five thirty eight.
- 22:19The man does not just receive sight,
- 22:21he received revelation. He says,
- 22:25Lord, I believe, and he worshipped him.
- 22:28Our physical healings fade with time.
- 22:33Our sufferings come and go,
- 22:36healing comes and go, but our spiritual sight lasts forever.
- 22:41This miracle
- 22:47Points to the Gospels in John eight twelve.
- 22:53Jesus is the light of the world.
- 22:56In eight twelve,
- 23:00Jesus spoke.
- 23:04Jesus again unto them saying, I am the light of the world.
- 23:08He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,
- 23:12but shall have the light of life.
- 23:17And every believer is a form of this blind man who has been seen
- 23:21by Christ and rejuvenated. At one point or other in our life,
- 23:27we answered
- 23:31the call to Christ and to be baptized,
- 23:37to put on his blood.
- 23:40And up until that point.
- 23:47We were blind going through life,
- 23:50going through our suffering without understanding,
- 23:54without purpose. and that blood that that
- 24:01He gave us and He shed for us was the blood that opens our eyes.
- 24:07The blind man didn't choose his suffering,
- 24:12but God chose how it would end.
- 24:18Some of you still may be in the middle of his story,
- 24:21asking yourself why, and still waiting for clarity,
- 24:27whether it's with or through God or not,
- 24:31but
- 24:35God wastes nothing. He doesn't waste tears,
- 24:40he doesn't waste time, and he doesn't waste pain.
- 24:44He works through all of these things.
- 24:46And one day we may look back and realize what you thought
- 24:52was meaningless suffering was actually sacred ground for God's glory.
- 24:57The world may be looking at you.
- 25:01You may be looking at you, wondering why would God do this to me,
- 25:05but God works with purpose. He doesn't just patronize us.
- 25:09We're not ants under his magnifying glass.
- 25:13We're his children. We need to trust him,
- 25:16find his glory and purpose in times of hardship.
- 25:19And if you have not found him in your life yet,
- 25:25I ask what you're waiting for.
- 25:31If there's something holding you back.
- 25:38Because this entire time, through our suffering,
- 25:43through all of our decisions, our shortcomings,
- 25:46he has been there waiting for us with open arms.
- 26:03Just as the just as he waited for the prodigal son.
- 26:10He waits for his children. And if you have not answered
- 26:16his call to come forward and enter his kingdom and
- 26:22be part of his body, we ask that you come forward now as we stand and sing.
