- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz. Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's total chaos in the Dan Patrick Show, Man Cave
- 0:23Speaker 2: as usual, and total chaos in the world of sports. Paul,
- 0:26Speaker 2: what do we got going on?
- 0:27Speaker 3: Yeah, we're going to talk to Andy Staples from On3
- 0:29Speaker 3: Sports a little later about the huge, huge college football weekend.
- 0:32Speaker 3: But we have a rule here on NSF. We've talked
- 0:35Speaker 3: about this before, and I know you're going to debunk it.
- 0:36Speaker 3: We never say it's over before it's over, but the
- 0:39Speaker 3: NLCS is.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It is so over. It's over, over. We do another
- 0:44Speaker 2: thing called over, over. And 3-0 lead for Milwaukee over
- 0:47Speaker 2: the Dodgers. To me, it's over, over. Last night, it
- 0:49Speaker 2: looked like the Dodgers got a lead late that they
- 0:52Speaker 2: might come back in the series. Now it's too late.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Am I being a stickler, like an analytic stickler, saying
- 0:57Speaker 3: that the Dodgers still technically have a chance because... Technically,
- 1:00Speaker 3: they do.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, yes. And OK, so the numbers are there have
- 1:03Speaker 2: been 42 series that have gone 3-0. Right. 41 times.
- 1:06Speaker 2: The team that's up 3-0 has gone on to win.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Of course, the one team that didn't was the Red
- 1:10Speaker 2: Sox in 0-4.
- 1:11Speaker 3: You know, the only reason I would make the case
- 1:12Speaker 3: of the Dodgers to have a chance-ish, and I mean
- 1:15Speaker 3: chance like 5%, is because they have such a talented
- 1:18Speaker 3: roster that is completely no-showed. But because they've no-showed so much,
- 1:22Speaker 3: I can't picture them getting one game. So I'm debunking
- 1:24Speaker 3: my own debunking.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yes. Let's talk about that talented roster for a second
- 1:28Speaker 2: before we get into the Brewers, who look like they
- 1:29Speaker 2: have a very even lineup. I do not know if
- 1:33Speaker 2: this is still a talented roster. If you take Shohei
- 1:36Speaker 2: out of that mix, I think they are closer to average.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Talented, but no one is stepping up to be the killer.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So last night, Brewers went 6-2, up 3-0 in the series.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Jackson Churio gets that first home run, and it looked like, oh, no,
- 1:48Speaker 3: we're starting this way with that first homer. Then they
- 1:51Speaker 3: start mowing down everybody. The Dodgers, I think they got
- 1:54Speaker 3: a couple runs in the fifth or sixth, and they
- 1:57Speaker 3: made it like, okay, they're going to win this. Blake
- 1:59Speaker 3: Snell gets knocked out hard. The one thing that stood
- 2:01Speaker 3: out to me is when the momentum changed for the
- 2:04Speaker 3: Brewers last night. Jake Bowers, the 11 pitch at bat
- 2:07Speaker 3: that ended in a home run, it's like all the
- 2:09Speaker 3: air went out of the building.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Wow.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Then we get to management. Should Dave Roberts have pulled
- 2:13Speaker 2: Blake Snell? It was the third time around the lineup,
- 2:15Speaker 2: and that's the hot trend in analytics. If a hitter
- 2:18Speaker 2: gets a CEO on the third time, they're going to
- 2:19Speaker 2: get to you. He starts off the inning with a
- 2:21Speaker 2: seven-pitch walk. He should have been out of there. I
- 2:24Speaker 2: don't know why Dave Roberts kept Blake Snell in.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So you're saying be disciplined and pull him because no
- 2:28Speaker 3: matter how he's pitching.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Nope. He wasn't pitching well. You could see on his
- 2:31Speaker 2: first at-bat of that inning that he did not have
- 2:33Speaker 2: the same stuff. And then Bowers almost hit a home run.
- 2:36Speaker 2: We just saw it there. And then finally did hit
- 2:38Speaker 2: a home run. Snell, if they kept Snell in, he
- 2:40Speaker 2: would have let up eventually 15 runs. He lost his stuff.
- 2:44Speaker 2: and they had seen him enough. I think there's a
- 2:47Speaker 2: huge management edge to Milwaukee right now because I didn't
- 2:50Speaker 2: think Dave Roberts had the answers, especially when you're not hitting.
- 2:53Speaker 2: They had to go to the pass.
- 2:55Speaker 3: We talked about it yesterday that the Milwaukee Brewers should
- 2:57Speaker 3: step on the gas, not worry about, oh, we'll just
- 3:00Speaker 3: get this one, maybe not get this one.
- 3:02Speaker 2: But they.
- 3:04Speaker 3: From the fifth inning on, they're killing teams. They're killing
- 3:06Speaker 3: teams all throughout the playoffs.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I think this is a trend I've talked about a lot.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Bullpen has always been important in the first season, but
- 3:12Speaker 2: now it's especially important. This thing about not seeing a
- 3:16Speaker 2: pitcher a third time around is a big deal. The
- 3:18Speaker 2: Brewers have, I know they get all this publicity for Miz.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Miz gets all the pub.
- 3:22Speaker 2: But I don't think they're going to pitch in more
- 3:24Speaker 2: than five innings. I think that bullpen has been incredible.
- 3:26Speaker 2: They're setting every kind of record possible.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Yeah, their closer last night, McGill, he was fantastic. He
- 3:31Speaker 3: looks like he was like, on a trucker show. He's awesome.
- 3:33Speaker 3: He's got the big front porch throwing 100 miles an hour,
- 3:36Speaker 3: but he was befuddling them.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Well, it's not just him. I mean, it's everybody. Their entire,
- 3:40Speaker 2: come fifth inning, they have at least six arms there
- 3:43Speaker 2: that are going to shut you down. Now, during the season,
- 3:45Speaker 2: they weren't that dominant, but they have looked incredible in
- 3:48Speaker 2: both series so far. And this is a formula. Watch.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I think Milwaukee is going to ride this bullpen all
- 3:53Speaker 2: the way. And we looked at the odds right before
- 3:56Speaker 2: the show. They're minus 140 to win the whole thing.
- 3:59Speaker 2: I don't see how it's not going to happen because
- 4:01Speaker 2: Dodgers gone. Then if this bullpen continues to play like this. Eventually,
- 4:06Speaker 2: the Brewers lineup is going to get you, and the
- 4:07Speaker 2: Brewers hitters have been very good for six through nine innings.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, and the other thing is we could talk about
- 4:12Speaker 3: this if they win and if they advance. Do you
- 4:14Speaker 3: want seven days off? Who knows? But if you're a
- 4:16Speaker 3: Dodgers fan, how are you feeling this morning? Do you
- 4:18Speaker 3: even want to watch or attend this game?
- 4:20Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know why anybody would care about
- 4:22Speaker 2: this game. To see who's hitting. Mookie Betts seems harmless.
- 4:26Speaker 2: He's a superstar. Freeman still looks hurt, and he had
- 4:29Speaker 2: one big game.
- 4:30Speaker 3: And he's probably the most consistent guy.
- 4:31Speaker 2: But he's not doing anything now. Shohei made a little
- 4:34Speaker 2: bit of contact last night. But I don't think he's
- 4:36Speaker 2: all the way back. Then I know Will Smith hit
- 4:39Speaker 2: something last night, but he's been terrible. Muncy has not
- 4:42Speaker 2: showed up. Where's Kike Hernandez? He should be batting first
- 4:44Speaker 2: every night. He's the one guy who usually shows up,
- 4:47Speaker 2: and he's not even there.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Kike Hernandez only shows up in the ninth inning of
- 4:50Speaker 3: important games where you need to win. He's not good
- 4:52Speaker 3: in those normal games. All right, if you're a Dodgers
- 4:54Speaker 3: fan and you get swept, you've just won two World
- 4:57Speaker 3: Series in a row. How upset can you be about
- 5:00Speaker 3: this franchise overall?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Well, there's a lot going on there.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Yeah, if they get swept, are you talking about age, money?
- 5:07Speaker 2: It feels like we are on the downside immediately. First
- 5:11Speaker 2: of all, your owner is in legal trouble. So we'll
- 5:13Speaker 2: see about the money. You're about to have a lockout,
- 5:17Speaker 2: second of all. So your older players, I do not
- 5:19Speaker 2: know what's happening with this team. I would say if
- 5:22Speaker 2: you're going to call it a dynasty, then maybe the
- 5:25Speaker 2: dynasty is already hitting the downside.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Three titles in six years. But if you're a Dodgers
- 5:28Speaker 3: fan and you're booing the Dodgers, it's almost like being
- 5:31Speaker 3: a 16-year-old rich kid. And on your 16th birthday, you
- 5:34Speaker 3: get a Honda Accord instead of a Porsche. You've had
- 5:36Speaker 3: it pretty good for a long time.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I hear you. But when your baseball team doesn't hit,
- 5:39Speaker 2: and you have guys who are making $ 50 million a
- 5:41Speaker 2: year to slug, and you cannot hit a home run
- 5:44Speaker 2: to save your life, you're getting out-homer, what is it,
- 5:47Speaker 2: 6-0 now? Yep. I saw a stat, the Dodgers haven't
- 5:51Speaker 2: gone a series without a home run since 1975. They slug.
- 5:55Speaker 2: That is their thing, and they are just not doing
- 5:57Speaker 2: it now. You know I'm from Philly. We boo everything.
- 5:59Speaker 2: We boo when we're winning. I get Dodgers fans booing.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And the other thing, when you come out of this,
- 6:04Speaker 2: if it is 4-0, which there's a 75% chance historically
- 6:07Speaker 2: that it'll go down as a 4-0 sweep, do you
- 6:10Speaker 2: have any real hope that next year is going to
- 6:12Speaker 2: be different. I think this is one of those series
- 6:14Speaker 2: where you lose and you feel it.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Well, I think because of the talent they have under contract,
- 6:19Speaker 3: you feel pretty good that the Dodgers are going to
- 6:21Speaker 3: win 95 games next year. But if you said to someone,
- 6:23Speaker 3: which roster would you want? Which roster is more root-for-able,
- 6:26Speaker 3: if that's a word? It's clearly the Brewers at one-third
- 6:29Speaker 3: the price. Ooh.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Which one do you think is more likely to win?
- 6:34Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, listen... We're anointing the Brewers
- 6:36Speaker 2: pretty fast. They got swept by the Dodgers last year.
- 6:39Speaker 3: True, but the Brewers in the past 10 years have
- 6:41Speaker 3: gone from like the 80 wins to the 90s wins
- 6:43Speaker 3: to the high 90s wins. Every year in the regular season,
- 6:46Speaker 3: the Brewers get a little bit better. All right, we're
- 6:48Speaker 3: going to tune into that tonight. And the ALCS game
- 6:50Speaker 3: today is 1 p.m. Eastern, Pearl.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 3: That's a witness protection game.
- 6:56Speaker 2: I know. We talked about it yesterday. That weather is
- 6:58Speaker 2: going to really affect the outcome of this. You're going
- 7:00Speaker 2: to get rain Thursday and Friday and Saturday really cold.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I don't think that either of those teams are going
- 7:06Speaker 2: to explode offensively, but I don't really know exactly what
- 7:09Speaker 2: the numbers are. But rain and wind and cold, this
- 7:12Speaker 2: is going to be a small ball ALCS, and I
- 7:15Speaker 2: honestly have no idea who's coming out.
- 7:16Speaker 3: 1 p.m. Eastern on a Thursday, not a lot of
- 7:19Speaker 3: eyeballs on that one. All right, Thursday night football, a
- 7:21Speaker 3: lot of eyeballs tonight. Seahawks at Broncos, both are 3-2.
- 7:26Speaker 3: This is a big game. I'm going to go first.
- 7:27Speaker 3: This is a national judgment game. These two teams, they're
- 7:30Speaker 3: kind of limping in 3-2. Technically, they're 3-2. They don't
- 7:34Speaker 3: feel very threatening at this point. The Denver defense is
- 7:38Speaker 3: carrying things. Bo Nix is only good in the fourth quarter.
- 7:40Speaker 3: The Seattle offense is okay. It's JSN and what else?
- 7:45Speaker 3: No running game. The defense has been good but not great.
- 7:47Speaker 3: This is going to be a judgment game on these
- 7:49Speaker 3: two teams.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Well, the defense actually numerically has been pretty good. But
- 7:52Speaker 2: we saw with our own eyes that they weren't good
- 7:55Speaker 2: against San Francisco. This is a team that lost to
- 7:57Speaker 2: the Washington Commanders. And luckily, it didn't come down to
- 8:01Speaker 2: a last-second thing because we know what the commanders do
- 8:03Speaker 2: as the clock runs out. But that's beside the point. Seahawks'
- 8:06Speaker 2: defense has not looked as dominant. They've been run on,
- 8:08Speaker 2: which never happens to them. I think people are underrating Denver. Now,
- 8:13Speaker 2: their two losses are at Kansas City and at San Francisco.
- 8:15Speaker 3: Now, they were your Super Bowl picks. You're sticking with them.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I just think that they are such a weird team.
- 8:20Speaker 2: They just show up out of nowhere late in the game.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And I think that a lot of people are looking
- 8:25Speaker 2: at what they're seeing on the field and saying, this
- 8:27Speaker 2: is not a real contender. I don't know what it
- 8:29Speaker 2: is about the Broncos. I can't put my finger on it.
- 8:31Speaker 2: But I think they are better than their sort of
- 8:35Speaker 2: outcome early in the season indicates. I do not count
- 8:37Speaker 2: them out at all. Not at all.
- 8:38Speaker 3: And I think people thought how they finished the season
- 8:41Speaker 3: last year, that if they had a healthy Bo Nix,
- 8:43Speaker 3: they could have been in the Super Bowl. They add
- 8:45Speaker 3: Waddle at wide receiver. You're like, oh, this is a
- 8:47Speaker 3: bonus for everybody. A lot of injuries on defense. But
- 8:50Speaker 3: it feels like some people in the media are jumping
- 8:53Speaker 3: way off the Bo Nix bandwagon.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. And even the Bo Nix bandwagon, I don't
- 8:57Speaker 2: think anyone ever thought he was going to be Drew
- 8:59Speaker 2: Brees under Sean Payne. He was never going to be
- 9:02Speaker 2: that kind of passer. What they can't do is regular passes.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Do you ever see a 15-yard pass from Bo Nix?
- 9:07Speaker 2: He just doesn't do it. It's not his arsenal. It's
- 9:09Speaker 2: either a screen pass or a bomb attempt. Their passing
- 9:12Speaker 2: offense is messed up. You mentioned Waddell. Oh my God,
- 9:15Speaker 2: I was so excited about him being in Denver. He
- 9:18Speaker 2: had one good game, but he feels non-threatening.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Yeah, he hasn't been targeted except for that one game.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I will say, though, the one thing that Bo Nix
- 9:25Speaker 3: has in his chamber is he seems to be clutch
- 9:27Speaker 3: in the fourth quarter. And it feels like you could
- 9:29Speaker 3: figure out those first three quarters and make him better.
- 9:31Speaker 3: But to have that gene where you're not nervous and
- 9:33Speaker 3: you don't pucker up in the fourth quarter, I do
- 9:36Speaker 3: want my quarterback to have that. I'd rather have that
- 9:38Speaker 3: problem with the first three quarters than the fourth quarter.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Because there's guys, no offense, but like a Kirk Cousins...
- 9:44Speaker 3: He is a fantastic quarterback. He does not feel clutch.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Is that fair to say?
- 9:48Speaker 2: No, I don't think that's fair.
- 9:52Speaker 3: You think Kirk Cousins is a clutch fourth-quarter quarterback?
- 9:54Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Wow, we made the news.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'll bet you he's top 10 all-time in comeback wins.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Well, that means he was behind going into the fourth quarter.
- 10:02Speaker 2: That's right. He has a lot of experience. The thing
- 10:05Speaker 2: about Bo Nix is that everyone thought he was going
- 10:07Speaker 2: to take a jump this year. Yes. He is a
- 10:09Speaker 2: victim of expectations. And he's actually gone backwards just a
- 10:13Speaker 2: little bit. But he wasn't that great last year. And
- 10:16Speaker 2: they won a lot of games that could have gone
- 10:17Speaker 2: in the Super Bowl. You need Bo Nix to run
- 10:19Speaker 2: the ball. That's what happens tonight, Paul. Mark my words.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Save it.
- 10:23Speaker 3: We're picking this game a little bit later.
- 10:24Speaker 2: Okay. All right. Coming up on Not So Fast, we
- 10:27Speaker 2: have some warm takes. I got an NBA one. And
- 10:31Speaker 2: Paul has what he considers one of the best jersey
- 10:33Speaker 2: matchups of all time. That's next. Not So Fast.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Nobody breaks down jersey matchups.
- 10:38Speaker 2: No. Nobody wants to, really. to be honest.
- 10:42Speaker 3: I think people want it more than you think. It
- 10:43Speaker 3: could be less than you think. Back on Not So Fast,
- 10:49Speaker 3: Pabst and Perloff. It's time for the Midday Pick Me Up, Perl.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Let's go some NBA preseason basketball bonus coverage. Here's Josh
- 10:57Speaker 3: Giddey from deep way downtown back. Good job. Nice little
- 11:01Speaker 3: pass there from Matas Buzelas. They love Buzelas in Chicago.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Watch this one.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Oh, look at that.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Kasparis Jakachonis with the circus shot. And then the Dylan
- 11:12Speaker 3: Harper putback dunk. Like nobody's business. This is just good
- 11:16Speaker 3: preseason basketball.
- 11:17Speaker 2: That's all this is. I love Dylan Harper.
- 11:19Speaker 3: He is pretty fantastic. The NBA is back on NBC
- 11:22Speaker 3: with a historic tripleheader to tip off the season. First,
- 11:25Speaker 3: Celtics Pistons. 76ers Knicks.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Wow.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And closing out, Thunder Spurs. Watch it live on NBC Live.
- 11:32Speaker 3: and Peacock Pearl. A lot of NBA coming up. You're
- 11:34Speaker 3: a preseason guy. You like to pick a guy you
- 11:36Speaker 3: fall in love with in the preseason.
- 11:38Speaker 2: Well, more NFL preseason. NBA preseason. I love NBA. I
- 11:42Speaker 2: can't quite go there.
- 11:43Speaker 3: You know who loves preseason basketball? The guy down the hall.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Dan Patrick loves preseason, and he loves summer league basketball.
- 11:49Speaker 3: He always falls. He came in one time, he goes,
- 11:51Speaker 3: you know this guy, Kevin Knox, for the Knicks?
- 11:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Watch out for that guy. All right, it's time for
- 11:55Speaker 3: warm takes here on Not So Fast with Pabst and Pearl. Pearl,
- 11:58Speaker 3: I'm going to mix it up a little bit. You're
- 12:00Speaker 3: going to go first.
- 12:01Speaker 2: What do we have? Let's talk NBA. Let's start with
- 12:04Speaker 2: the San Antonio Spurs. In my opinion, the most interesting
- 12:06Speaker 2: team in the NBA, the team to watch because they
- 12:08Speaker 2: have the singular star in the sport, Victor Wembenyama. So
- 12:12Speaker 2: you ask the question, how do you surround Wembenyama to
- 12:15Speaker 2: win a title? The Spurs are going in a direction
- 12:17Speaker 2: I do not like. I woke up this morning to
- 12:20Speaker 2: this headline. Spurs debut three-guard lineup of Fox, Harper, Castle
- 12:25Speaker 2: in preseason win. So they have three awesome guards, but
- 12:29Speaker 2: they're small. Now here's some numbers on it. Fox, Harper,
- 12:32Speaker 2: and Castle played only 69 minutes together last season. They
- 12:36Speaker 2: were outscored by 47 points in those minutes. So here's
- 12:39Speaker 2: what they're doing. They expect Victor Wimbanyama to do everything inside,
- 12:44Speaker 2: get all the rebounds, do all the defense. They're not
- 12:47Speaker 2: giving him any help interior. They're giving him all the
- 12:50Speaker 2: help on the perimeter. So they have a bunch of
- 12:53Speaker 2: two guards and maybe a three guy like Tobias Harris.
- 12:56Speaker 2: He needs some size up front so he doesn't have
- 12:59Speaker 2: to work as hard to get rebounds. He doesn't have
- 13:00Speaker 2: to work as hard on defense. We saw in real
- 13:03Speaker 2: time him wear down against the Knicks in the Finals.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And also, he needs an enforcer. Every great player has
- 13:08Speaker 2: an enforcer. Steph Curry had Draymond Green. Michael Jordan early
- 13:12Speaker 2: on had Charles Oakley and then Rodman and Grant. You
- 13:15Speaker 2: go any great player, go to Wayne Gretzky, had McSorley.
- 13:19Speaker 2: You need that guy. And I feel like they're going
- 13:21Speaker 2: the wrong direction in San Antonio. They have all these
- 13:23Speaker 2: talented guards. Bring in some beef, something to intimidate you,
- 13:26Speaker 2: somebody to bang around. It's a philosophy thing, too. They
- 13:30Speaker 2: think that Wemby can do everything. The man can't. He's
- 13:32Speaker 2: just one 7'5 French guy, Paul. I think the Spurs
- 13:36Speaker 2: are building this championship team the wrong way, despite all
- 13:39Speaker 2: their talent.
- 13:39Speaker 3: This is like sports irony. You've got the tallest player
- 13:41Speaker 3: in the world, and so you try to dumb down
- 13:43Speaker 3: your roster or shorten your roster by having a lot
- 13:45Speaker 3: of short guys around.
- 13:46Speaker 2: You think you can afford to do that because Wemby's
- 13:48Speaker 2: so tall.
- 13:49Speaker 3: You absolutely need an enforcer to protect him. You need
- 13:51Speaker 3: someone who can When he gets in a jam with someone,
- 13:54Speaker 3: they come in, fight, and get the one-game suspension because
- 13:56Speaker 3: Wemby can't get suspended. The other thing, De'Aaron Fox, the
- 13:59Speaker 3: way he ended last year's season was brutal. I knew
- 14:03Speaker 3: there's contract stuff, and they probably couldn't get rid of him.
- 14:05Speaker 3: There's a guy who's got to rehab his career.
- 14:07Speaker 2: I also think Stephon Castle, incredibly talented.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 14:10Speaker 2: But he has to put so much energy into rebounding
- 14:12Speaker 2: that he loses his legs and a shot will go
- 14:14Speaker 2: away eventually in the playoffs. I'm thinking more of the
- 14:16Speaker 2: playoffs because I think the Spurs are going to be there.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I just think that they need a little more help
- 14:20Speaker 2: for Wemby. And these are three great guards. As we mentioned,
- 14:24Speaker 2: I love Dylan Harper, emerging star. Oh, gosh, yeah. But
- 14:26Speaker 2: the way you built this team helped Wemby out more.
- 14:29Speaker 2: All right.
- 14:29Speaker 3: It's time for my warm take, and here we go, Pearl.
- 14:32Speaker 3: The Dodgers are on the cusp of being swept by
- 14:34Speaker 3: the Milwaukee Brewers. Now, let me take you into the
- 14:37Speaker 3: current state of mind of a Brewers fan. They're getting
- 14:40Speaker 3: up after the big win in Game 3. They wake up,
- 14:43Speaker 3: and they kind of have this realization, we're up 3-0
- 14:45Speaker 3: on the Dodgers. We're about to beat the Dodgers. And
- 14:48Speaker 3: you're getting ready for work, and they're trying to push
- 14:50Speaker 3: it out of their minds. They're trying not to think.
- 14:52Speaker 3: This is the Brewers fan. Not to think about, we're
- 14:55Speaker 3: going to sweep the Dodgers. You have to get that
- 14:56Speaker 3: out of your head because you have to think, well,
- 14:59Speaker 3: we've got to get tonight, and if it goes another one,
- 15:01Speaker 3: it goes another one. You can't start thinking about the
- 15:03Speaker 3: World Series. It's like the ultimate jinx. And baseball fans,
- 15:07Speaker 3: sports fans really believe this. Going back to 2016 when
- 15:10Speaker 3: the Cubs were up on the Dodgers, I was like,
- 15:12Speaker 3: don't think about the World Series. Don't think about the
- 15:14Speaker 3: World Series. And the Brewers fan right now is churning.
- 15:18Speaker 3: And you think, and I'm talking about the older Brewer fan.
- 15:20Speaker 3: If you're a Brewers fan who's 30 or under, you're like,
- 15:23Speaker 3: this is awesome, man.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Our team's awesome.
- 15:25Speaker 3: We're going to sweep the Dodgers and go to the
- 15:27Speaker 3: World Series against the Guardians or the Rays, whoever they are.
- 15:30Speaker 3: No problem. But if you're a Brewers fan who remembers
- 15:33Speaker 3: or was around for 1982, the last time you made
- 15:35Speaker 3: the World Series, you are grinding this morning. You're at
- 15:39Speaker 3: the office looking at your phone, checking the websites, reading
- 15:42Speaker 3: about the game, or you're trying to ignore it because
- 15:44Speaker 3: you can't believe we may be 24 hours away from
- 15:47Speaker 3: going to the World Series on a lot of rest.
- 15:49Speaker 3: So if you're an older Brewers fan, Try to enjoy today.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Well, I don't know. If you were really remembering that 82,
- 15:57Speaker 2: you might not even have a phone.
- 15:58Speaker 3: You might be retired.
- 15:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know.
- 16:00Speaker 1: That's even worse.
- 16:01Speaker 3: You're sitting at home. You're probably on your Barca lounge.
- 16:04Speaker 3: You're thinking. we're about to go to the World Series
- 16:06Speaker 3: for the first time since 82. This is driving me crazy.
- 16:09Speaker 3: It's a great but uncomfortable feeling.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I know what you're talking about, but I don't get
- 16:13Speaker 2: that vibe from this Brewers fan base. They look completely comfortable.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Like they've been there before. They're acting like they've been
- 16:21Speaker 2: there before. Maybe I'm overconfident.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Because it's going very well. They're in the car right
- 16:26Speaker 3: now driving to cash in their lottery ticket. and they're
- 16:28Speaker 3: trying to maneuver through traffic. They're not there yet at
- 16:31Speaker 3: the lottery place.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I think there is nothing to fear in this Los
- 16:35Speaker 2: Angeles Dodgers lineup. Nothing.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Not fear, but grind on the possibility of what may be.
- 16:41Speaker 2: This whole show, I think you're overestimating the Dodgers' chances.
- 16:45Speaker 2: All right, I'm going to go to football for my
- 16:46Speaker 2: next warm take. Mel Kuyper put out his big board
- 16:49Speaker 2: this morning. Yeah, basically, cancel all your appointments. It's time
- 16:53Speaker 2: to read. Paul, there were five quarterbacks in the top ten. Five,
- 16:57Speaker 2: which is a lot. None of them were named Arch Manning.
- 17:00Speaker 2: I think we're going to have to get used to
- 17:02Speaker 2: a new idea that is going to be a very
- 17:04Speaker 2: heavy NFL draft for quarterbacks, and there's a chance Arch
- 17:08Speaker 2: will either go back to college or not be a
- 17:10Speaker 2: first-round pick. Now, I'm not sure I agree with Mel
- 17:13Speaker 2: Kiper on this big board, but he is sort of
- 17:15Speaker 2: the voice of NFL draft still, no matter how many
- 17:18Speaker 2: years he's been doing this. So that's a big deal.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I think as you're a casual fan, you're going to
- 17:23Speaker 2: have to get used to Drew Messamaker of Oklahoma State,
- 17:25Speaker 2: Darren Mensah of Miami. You probably know CJ Carr, Austin
- 17:28Speaker 2: Simmons out of Missouri. You knew him at Ole Miss
- 17:31Speaker 2: before he lost his job to Trinidad Chambliss, who's also
- 17:33Speaker 2: in the top 10. So it's going to be a
- 17:35Speaker 2: much different board come April. Now, Kiper puts out several
- 17:39Speaker 2: iterations of this, so this will change. But it really
- 17:42Speaker 2: does introduce this idea that it's going to be a
- 17:44Speaker 2: huge quarterback class and there ain't going to be no
- 17:46Speaker 2: Arch there because Arch has been so inconsistent. It is interesting.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Sometimes these mock drafts get posted. They maneuver people certain
- 17:53Speaker 3: ways to get more clicks. I don't think Mel Kuyper
- 17:55Speaker 3: is the kind of guy.
- 17:56Speaker 2: That does that. It's not a mock draft. It's just
- 17:57Speaker 2: a ranking of players. He never goes to that many quarterbacks.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Right, because Mel is more of a player evaluation guy
- 18:04Speaker 3: than a mock drafter.
- 18:05Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a player evaluation. This is not a fit.
- 18:08Speaker 3: You know what's weird? I was thinking about this thing
- 18:10Speaker 3: and If Arch Manning goes back to college, is it
- 18:13Speaker 3: automatically Texas? Is it automatically Texas for his last year?
- 18:17Speaker 3: And I'm not trying to warm take. I'm not trying
- 18:19Speaker 3: to hot take at all. But I'm saying that it's
- 18:21Speaker 3: happened before that quarterbacks who, let's say it doesn't go
- 18:23Speaker 3: well for the next two months for Texas. There's been
- 18:27Speaker 3: very good college quarterbacks who they said, we may not
- 18:29Speaker 3: have a spot for you. I don't think Arch Manning
- 18:31Speaker 3: is in that situation.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Right, he doesn't really have a backup.
- 18:33Speaker 3: No, but I would bet that Eli Manning went back
- 18:36Speaker 3: to college. He had one more year left. His junior year,
- 18:38Speaker 3: his second year as a starter, was a bit disappointing.
- 18:41Speaker 3: We're a little far away from that now, but some
- 18:43Speaker 3: of those names on there, Trinidad Chambliss as a top
- 18:45Speaker 3: five guy.
- 18:48Speaker 2: That's 98% of the draft.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Six months ago, he may have been a third rounder.
- 18:52Speaker 2: No, I know, and he's barely six feet tall, and
- 18:55Speaker 2: he's 25 years old. Yes. I have trouble. It's so
- 18:58Speaker 2: funny you mention that. I have trouble believing that a
- 19:00Speaker 2: team will look at him. And obviously, you know, Mestemaker, again,
- 19:04Speaker 2: you know, Arch beat Ohio State, and he won at Tennessee.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Mestemaker beat Oregon, but I don't know, like, in the
- 19:10Speaker 2: same situation as Arch, would they be any better?
- 19:12Speaker 3: You know, we used to do a thing on the
- 19:13Speaker 3: Leisureman called the Bust Metric, you and I, with quarterbacks,
- 19:15Speaker 3: and Drew Mestemaker is awesome. He's fun to watch. He's
- 19:17Speaker 3: really cool to watch. I watched him in North Texas
- 19:20Speaker 3: before he got there. He's playing good football for an
- 19:22Speaker 3: average team. To me, he's the ultimate high-low guy where
- 19:26Speaker 3: it could completely work out or completely not. That would
- 19:28Speaker 3: be the guy who would be the riskiest.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and Darren Mensah hasn't played anybody yet in Miami,
- 19:33Speaker 2: so we have no idea. C.J. Carr, to me, he's
- 19:36Speaker 2: the safest bet in this whole thing. But Austin Simmons
- 19:39Speaker 2: will be really fun to watch as he emerges. And then,
- 19:41Speaker 2: by the way, Dante Moore is just an afterthought now.
- 19:44Speaker 2: What if Arch Manning was a second-round pickball? Would that
- 19:46Speaker 2: be the craziest thing you've ever heard?
- 19:47Speaker 3: It sure would. It sure would, I would bet. We've
- 19:50Speaker 3: got to make a bet on that one. All right,
- 19:51Speaker 3: coming up tonight, Seahawks versus the Broncos. This is a
- 19:54Speaker 3: great uniform battle. If you saw what's going on, they
- 19:57Speaker 3: tweeted it out. They're going the old-school 70s, 80s uniforms
- 20:01Speaker 3: for both the Broncos. Look at those. You're going to
- 20:02Speaker 3: burn your retinas if you stare at those too long.
- 20:04Speaker 3: Those are purely awesome. And everyone agrees with it. Everyone
- 20:07Speaker 3: on Earth agrees that those are awesome throwback uniforms. Now,
- 20:11Speaker 3: teams do this. The Buccaneers do this every year at
- 20:13Speaker 3: least once. The Patriots do this like last week. They
- 20:16Speaker 3: go back, and they have those old 70s, 80s throwback uniforms.
- 20:20Speaker 3: And you know why they do it? Well, they do
- 20:21Speaker 3: it for the fans to sell some product, to have
- 20:24Speaker 3: a kind of throwback nostalgia night. And what happens every
- 20:26Speaker 3: time they do this, when the Buccaneers do it, everyone says,
- 20:29Speaker 3: can we go back to these permanently? People on social media,
- 20:32Speaker 3: people on radio and TV shows, can we go back
- 20:34Speaker 3: to them permanently? Here's why NFL teams will never go
- 20:37Speaker 3: back permanently to uniforms like those, the Broncos, the Seahawks,
- 20:40Speaker 3: and others. They won't do this because they like to
- 20:42Speaker 3: tease us every year. They like to let us have
- 20:44Speaker 3: those Buccaneers creamsicles once or twice a year, the Patriot
- 20:50Speaker 3: Pete snapping the ball once or twice a year. But
- 20:52Speaker 3: if they went back to them full-time, that's a commitment.
- 20:55Speaker 3: That's a lifelong commitment to those uniforms because everyone loves
- 20:58Speaker 3: them and wants them to be there forever. What NFL
- 21:01Speaker 3: teams like to do and their sales and marketing departments
- 21:03Speaker 3: like to do is They like to tweak their uniforms
- 21:06Speaker 3: every couple years and every maybe 10 years do a
- 21:08Speaker 3: complete overhaul. Not all teams, not like the Packers or
- 21:11Speaker 3: the Steelers, but the other 25 teams do. They do
- 21:14Speaker 3: this because they know the local fans will spend money
- 21:17Speaker 3: on the new uniform.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Or the tweaked uniform. You need a change.
- 21:19Speaker 3: You need a change.
- 21:20Speaker 2: So you can sell more jerseys.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Sell more jerseys. So that's what they do. So mission
- 21:24Speaker 3: accomplished by these teams. They bait you with these throwbacks.
- 21:27Speaker 3: They will never, ever go back to them full time.
- 21:29Speaker 3: So enjoy your Jim Zorn uniform. Enjoy your Ricky Upchurch
- 21:32Speaker 3: uniform tonight. Those uniforms will never be back full time.
- 21:35Speaker 2: You know, it's an interesting trend because we saw there's
- 21:38Speaker 2: a college football team, Coastal Carolina, going to the 90s.
- 21:41Speaker 2: When the uniforms came out in the 90s, even I
- 21:43Speaker 2: knew they were ugly at the time. But if you
- 21:45Speaker 2: have enough time to go by, they become cool again.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Like the Charlotte Hornets from the 90s were not cool
- 21:51Speaker 2: at the time with Rex Chapman. Now they're cool.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Well, there's some psychology behind this, and I've read about this.
- 21:56Speaker 3: For people who are like 50 years old, you go
- 21:58Speaker 3: back and think about the 80s and 90s. It's when
- 22:00Speaker 3: you were young. If you look at those old white
- 22:03Speaker 3: socks uniforms from 1983, I was around.
- 22:05Speaker 2: With pants?
- 22:06Speaker 3: No, not the 83 with the cross, the Ron Kittle,
- 22:10Speaker 3: Greg Luzinski.
- 22:11Speaker 2: They had like a collar?
- 22:12Speaker 3: No, that was in the late 70s. But those ugly uniforms,
- 22:16Speaker 3: if you're at a certain age, they remind you of
- 22:18Speaker 3: being young again. And you like feeling young again. I
- 22:20Speaker 3: read the psychology between this. This is more your stuff
- 22:22Speaker 3: than me. But you think that those White Sox uniforms
- 22:25Speaker 3: or those Vancouver Grizzlies uniforms were awesome? They weren't awesome.
- 22:29Speaker 3: You made fun of them. We made fun of them
- 22:30Speaker 3: at the time. But it's a portal back to the
- 22:32Speaker 3: past when you were 25 and watching baseball or watching
- 22:35Speaker 3: football or basketball.
- 22:36Speaker 2: Well, I will tell you one thing, though. Let's talk fashion,
- 22:39Speaker 2: which we never do on Not So Fast. Oh, always.
- 22:41Speaker 2: So 70s and 80s were iconic looks. They just get regurgitated, regurgitated, regurgitated.
- 22:47Speaker 2: My daughter studies fashion. And she said that there hasn't
- 22:50Speaker 2: been a new look in 25 years. You basically are
- 22:52Speaker 2: just going to go back.
- 22:53Speaker 3: If you want to see peak NFL uniforms, grab a
- 22:56Speaker 3: Sears catalog from 1978 and look at what they used
- 22:59Speaker 3: to sell. And the average person over 40 years old,
- 23:02Speaker 3: that is peak NFL uniforms.
- 23:03Speaker 2: Yeah. So we're pining for the good old days. I
- 23:06Speaker 2: get that.
- 23:07Speaker 3: You'll never get them full time.
- 23:08Speaker 2: By the way, Kelly Green Eagle's uniform from the 90s,
- 23:11Speaker 2: that is peak.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Gorgeous. Randall Cuttingham in those, he was twice as fast.
- 23:15Speaker 3: All right, before we get done here, we're going to
- 23:17Speaker 3: play the game that always beats us. We rarely beat it.
- 23:19Speaker 3: It's called Who Said It, Pearl? This is probably football-related
- 23:23Speaker 3: but not guaranteed. Who said the following quote?
- 23:25Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 23:28Speaker 3: When they drafted me, it was one of the best
- 23:29Speaker 3: days ever. I get to go to an organization that
- 23:31Speaker 3: didn't have the wins, the championship that everybody has, and
- 23:35Speaker 3: I get to be a part of it when we
- 23:36Speaker 3: get the chance to turn things around.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Ooh, so a team that's never won a title. I'm
- 23:41Speaker 2: going to say Cam Ward with the Titans.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that seems like a safe pick. I would go
- 23:47Speaker 3: Justin Jefferson with the Vikings just to try something different.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:50Speaker 3: What's the answer here? We're probably wrong.
- 23:53Speaker 5: When, you know, they drafted me, it was one of
- 23:56Speaker 5: the best days ever. I get to go to an
- 23:58Speaker 5: organization that didn't have, you know, the wins, the championships
- 24:04Speaker 5: that everybody had, and, you know, I get to be
- 24:05Speaker 5: a part of it, you know, when we get a
- 24:07Speaker 5: chance to turn it around.
- 24:08Speaker 3: That is Cam Ward of the Titans talking about joining
- 24:10Speaker 3: the Titans and getting them their first victory. I like
- 24:12Speaker 3: the confidence.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I think that's crazy because he's not going to be
- 24:17Speaker 2: there when they turn it around. There's no indication that
- 24:19Speaker 2: they have any immediate plans to turn it around with
- 24:22Speaker 2: him at quarterback.
- 24:22Speaker 3: He's both not going to be there, and they're not
- 24:24Speaker 3: going to turn it around.
- 24:25Speaker 2: No, I feel like I like Cam Ward a lot.
- 24:27Speaker 2: I think he's gotten the wrong coaches for two years,
- 24:30Speaker 2: and he's definitely got the wrong coaching staff now. I
- 24:32Speaker 2: see him like Sam Darnold finding a home down the road.
- 24:35Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, he sits on a bench for a team
- 24:37Speaker 3: for a year, and then he gets his own squad.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Yeah, he goes in as a backup for Kyle Shanahan.
- 24:40Speaker 2: It just doesn't seem like that's the right direction. But
- 24:42Speaker 2: we finally got one right.
- 24:44Speaker 3: That's finally you got one right. All right, coming up next,
- 24:46Speaker 3: Andy Staples of On3Sports getting ready for the huge college
- 24:50Speaker 3: football weekend. Stick around. Not so fast. Pass to Perloff.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Did you cheat? No, I didn't. I never heard that one.
- 24:57Speaker 2: But I kind of do enjoy how mad you get
- 24:59Speaker 2: that you can never get these right.
- 25:00Speaker 3: I'm like 0 for the year.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You're actually keeping score because you're so competitive.
- 25:03Speaker 3: It's my game. I come out with it, and I'm
- 25:05Speaker 3: 0 for the year.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps,
- 25:09Speaker 2: NBC Sports Now, and Peacock. And if you're a college
- 25:12Speaker 2: football fan, of course you follow on three. And if
- 25:14Speaker 2: you follow on three, you've got to follow our guy
- 25:17Speaker 2: Andy Staples, of course host of the Andy and Ari podcast. Andy,
- 25:22Speaker 2: I have some bad news. We had Jaden Ball on
- 25:24Speaker 2: a few weeks ago, and your Florida Gators, the Florida
- 25:26Speaker 2: Gators that you played for. You jinxed him. They've not
- 25:29Speaker 2: done well since that. So hopefully this will not be
- 25:32Speaker 2: bad news for the Gators. They have some tough games
- 25:34Speaker 2: coming up. How are you doing? Are you still in
- 25:37Speaker 2: on Florida football, or is this really going downhill?
- 25:41Speaker 1: In on them doing what?
- 25:42Speaker 3: That answers the question.
- 25:44Speaker 1: They're playing. They're playing Texas. They're playing the best defense
- 25:47Speaker 1: in the country this week. So I'm a little worried
- 25:50Speaker 1: about their ability to score.
- 25:51Speaker 3: All right, Andy, let me get to a topic Andrew
- 25:53Speaker 3: brought up on yesterday's show. Indiana has Ohio State this weekend.
- 25:57Speaker 3: Josh Hoover, their quarterback, is playing pretty well and 17 touchdowns,
- 26:01Speaker 3: zero picks. We don't talk a lot about Indiana this
- 26:03Speaker 3: year because, and Andrew's theory is, They won it all
- 26:06Speaker 3: last year. It's like they went to the moon and
- 26:08Speaker 3: they're going to the moon again. You can't picture Indiana
- 26:10Speaker 3: doing this twice in our lifetime. How do you think
- 26:13Speaker 3: this game plays out? What do you think of the
- 26:14Speaker 3: coverage or lack thereof of IU football this year?
- 26:17Speaker 1: It's definitely because it's Indiana, because it's not a brand
- 26:20Speaker 1: we're used to seeing at the top of the standings,
- 26:23Speaker 1: even though they're still just as good as these other
- 26:27Speaker 1: teams that we're talking about. And I think that's what's interesting.
- 26:31Speaker 1: The fact that the spread in this game is three
- 26:33Speaker 1: and a half points tells you that everybody thinks they're
- 26:36Speaker 1: just as good as Ohio State, that they belong in
- 26:39Speaker 1: that conversation with Ohio State. I don't know about if
- 26:44Speaker 1: Oregon actually belongs in that conversation, but with Georgia and
- 26:46Speaker 1: with Alabama. So I think it's just our lizard brains
- 26:51Speaker 1: have not come around to the idea that Indiana is
- 26:54Speaker 1: an elite program now. But it's also, I think, they
- 27:00Speaker 1: didn't play anybody. Had they played somebody good in the non-conference,
- 27:03Speaker 1: we would have had a week where we would have
- 27:05Speaker 1: been like, this game's.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Going to be awesome!
- 27:07Speaker 1: And then we all would have watched it, and we
- 27:08Speaker 1: would have watched them win it. And we would have said, hey,
- 27:11Speaker 1: they're still really good. Now, here's the thing. Indiana's not
- 27:15Speaker 1: as good as they were last year, but neither is
- 27:17Speaker 1: Ohio State. So, I think both these teams would probably
- 27:22Speaker 1: come down about the same amount, and last year, Indiana
- 27:25Speaker 1: was better than Ohio State.
- 27:26Speaker 2: So, I.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Looking at this, I actually think the spread's probably flipped.
- 27:32Speaker 1: I think Indiana should be the one favored by a
- 27:34Speaker 1: field goal here. Ohio State's defense is not as dominant
- 27:38Speaker 1: as it was last year. They've not been able to
- 27:41Speaker 1: shut people down the way they did last year. They
- 27:44Speaker 1: shut down Iowa because Iowa tends to shut itself down.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Now we'll see with Jeremy Hekalinski instead of Hank Brown,
- 27:50Speaker 1: maybe that's different. because it looked different against Washington. But
- 27:54Speaker 1: for the most part, that's what we see. Ohio State
- 27:56Speaker 1: let Arch Manning lead Texas back. Tennessee didn't really do that.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Oklahoma took the game away from Texas because of Arch Manning.
- 28:08Speaker 1: So are we sure that Ohio State defensively is all
- 28:13Speaker 1: that great? We are sure that Jeremiah Smith is a
- 28:16Speaker 1: generational talent, is probably the best player in the country.
- 28:19Speaker 1: And they've been spamming the Jeremiah Smith button for the
- 28:22Speaker 1: last few weeks, which I think if you can do
- 28:26Speaker 1: that against Iowa, you can probably do it against anybody
- 28:28Speaker 1: because that's a really good defense, good players, good scheme,
- 28:31Speaker 1: good everything. And they still were getting it to him
- 28:35Speaker 1: when he was double and triple covered. So I do
- 28:38Speaker 1: think that's possible. But the problem is, can you do
- 28:41Speaker 1: that in a game where the other team can score
- 28:43Speaker 1: on your defense and Indiana's offense can score on their defense?
- 28:47Speaker 2: You mentioned Arch Manning. Steve Sarkeesian, head coach at Texas,
- 28:50Speaker 2: said if his name was Joe Smith, we would be
- 28:52Speaker 2: praising him. I ask you, Andy, if Arch Manning's name
- 28:56Speaker 2: was Joe Smith, how would you evaluate his season?
- 28:59Speaker 1: Well, he wouldn't be playing at Texas.
- 29:00Speaker 2: So, I don't know.
- 29:03Speaker 1: He'd be playing somewhere else. So, that's the thing. If
- 29:08Speaker 1: it was Joe Smith who started at Texas last year,
- 29:11Speaker 1: they might have had a quarterback.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Competition this year.
- 29:13Speaker 5: So.
- 29:16Speaker 1: This is a different, he's taking advantage of the Manning
- 29:18Speaker 1: name on this front. He's not been bad. And most
- 29:23Speaker 1: teams would take what you've gotten from Arch Manning. But
- 29:27Speaker 1: the problem is, Texas is supposed to win the national title. Like,
- 29:31Speaker 1: you spent all that money on that roster. You spent
- 29:32Speaker 1: all that money to get Cam Coleman, to revamp your
- 29:34Speaker 1: running back room, to get Rasheem Biles. You spent all
- 29:37Speaker 1: that money to keep Colin Simmons. All of it to
- 29:41Speaker 1: win a national title. You didn't spend it to just
- 29:44Speaker 1: make the playoff. You didn't spend it to go 9-3
- 29:45Speaker 1: and not make the playoff. The standard is different. If
- 29:51Speaker 1: you're mad that people are judging Arch Manning too harshly,
- 29:54Speaker 1: then he should have picked a less prestigious brand in
- 29:58Speaker 1: college football.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it almost does feel like he was recruited based
- 30:01Speaker 3: off his name and just tearing up in high school,
- 30:04Speaker 3: and people are sticking with that brand. Let me ask
- 30:05Speaker 3: you about another brand. Notre Dame, not the toughest schedule.
- 30:08Speaker 3: They have BYU. If you're Notre Dame, I know you
- 30:11Speaker 3: don't want a loss, but don't you want a traditional shootout,
- 30:14Speaker 3: fourth quarter?
- 30:15Speaker 1: No, you want to kick the crap out of BYU.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Andy, I thought you'd want a burner that just tests
- 30:21Speaker 3: you and tests everybody on the roster.
- 30:22Speaker 1: No, kick the crap out of BYU and hope BYU
- 30:24Speaker 1: goes 11-1. So that in every other game they won,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and then you beat the living crap out of them.
- 30:30Speaker 1: That's what you want. I don't know if that's necessarily
- 30:33Speaker 1: what you'll get. I do think BYU is in a
- 30:35Speaker 1: tough spot because you don't have LJ Martin. And since
- 30:39Speaker 1: LJ Martin went down against TCU, they have basically had
- 30:42Speaker 1: Bear Bachmeier doing everything for them. He's the quarterback. He's
- 30:47Speaker 1: throwing the ball well. But he's also their biggest running threat.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Against this Notre Dame defense, that's too much to ask
- 30:53Speaker 1: one person to do. I don't know there's a quarterback
- 30:56Speaker 1: in the country that I would want carrying that kind
- 30:59Speaker 1: of load against this defense. So that's the problem. I
- 31:03Speaker 1: think if LJ Martin's playing this game, I'm handicapping a
- 31:07Speaker 1: little bit differently. But I worry because I just don't
- 31:12Speaker 1: know that Bear Bachmeier, and it actually reminds me a
- 31:15Speaker 1: little bit of when Notre Dame played Ohio State in
- 31:18Speaker 1: the national title game, and they just ran Riley Leonard
- 31:21Speaker 1: over and over. And it got him a touchdown early,
- 31:23Speaker 1: but then you realize, oh, this can't sustain.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Not sustainable.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Yeah, and then that's– so I worry that's what's going
- 31:30Speaker 1: to happen on Saturday.
- 31:31Speaker 2: All right, Andy, I have sort of a general question
- 31:33Speaker 2: about the SEC. Georgia looks like maybe the dominant team
- 31:37Speaker 2: in the country, but I'm having trouble figuring out with
- 31:39Speaker 2: the NIL era, is the SEC great right now, good, overrated,
- 31:44Speaker 2: underrated as a whole? Because we've had a lot of
- 31:47Speaker 2: up and down already this year.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Well, it's interesting in the NIL era because everybody cares
- 31:53Speaker 1: a ton, so everybody spends a lot of money on rosters.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And that very quickly took away the Saban-era Alabama advantage
- 32:01Speaker 1: and the early Kirby Smart-era Georgia advantage of our roster
- 32:06Speaker 1: is so much deeper than yours, our backups could beat
- 32:08Speaker 1: your starters. That doesn't happen anymore. None of these teams...
- 32:12Speaker 1: is infallible in conference play. And you can lose to
- 32:17Speaker 1: almost anybody because, again, Mississippi State cares just as much
- 32:21Speaker 1: as you do. They may not have quite as much money,
- 32:24Speaker 1: but they're going to spend all they have to put
- 32:26Speaker 1: a good team on the field. And guess what? They
- 32:29Speaker 1: hit on a quarterback who's from 30 minutes away from campus.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Kamario Taylor's awesome. They can beat anybody in the league
- 32:36Speaker 1: this year if Kamario Taylor's healthy. Ole Miss has become
- 32:40Speaker 1: a real contender in this era because they handled their,
- 32:44Speaker 1: their spending wisely. Like Keith Carter, their athletic director is like, Hey,
- 32:50Speaker 1: instead of wasting money on the stadium, Let's spend it
- 32:53Speaker 1: on players. Let's just be good at it. And you
- 32:57Speaker 1: know what? If we win, they'll give us more money
- 32:59Speaker 1: and we can fix up the stadium. So that's the thing.
- 33:04Speaker 1: They've got everybody bought in. Everybody cares, which means the
- 33:08Speaker 1: roster's gotten better throughout the league.
- 33:10Speaker 3: All right, Andy, before we get you out of here, you,
- 33:12Speaker 3: like us, love tailgating, barbecue, college football settings. I'm not
- 33:16Speaker 3: going to let you pick a top 25 team, but
- 33:18Speaker 3: is there like a team.
- 33:21Speaker 3: That whereas there's a tailgate game day experience you would
- 33:24Speaker 3: love to try. I'll go first to give you an example.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I look at those pictures of Appalachian State and those
- 33:29Speaker 3: October games. I want to move to Boone, North Carolina
- 33:31Speaker 3: for October. I don't know if you've been there because
- 33:33Speaker 3: it would hurt. Is there a place you want to
- 33:35Speaker 3: go you haven't gone yet?
- 33:36Speaker 1: So Boone, they love to party.
- 33:39Speaker 2: They're spectacular.
- 33:40Speaker 1: It's incredible. I've been to most of the places I
- 33:43Speaker 1: want to go, but still on my bucket list is
- 33:45Speaker 1: Mikey Stadium. I would love to see an Army home game.
- 33:48Speaker 1: I still have not gotten to do that yet. It
- 33:51Speaker 1: looks absolutely beautiful there, and obviously I'm a big fan
- 33:54Speaker 1: of the triple option. So I would love to.
- 33:56Speaker 3: See an Army home game. Andy, you're speaking to your
- 33:59Speaker 3: shaman here. I go every year with Dan Patrick. We
- 34:02Speaker 3: go to one Army home game a year. You've got
- 34:04Speaker 3: to get there early. You walk the grounds, not the campus,
- 34:06Speaker 3: the grounds. The cadets are there. It's like going to
- 34:10Speaker 3: a time machine. And then when you see that offense
- 34:12Speaker 3: where they try two passes a game, it's fantastic.
- 34:15Speaker 2: I love it.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Next time, when you want to go, you tell us
- 34:17Speaker 3: and we'll meet you there.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:19Speaker 1: I love it.
- 34:19Speaker 6: I love it.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Now, I'll give you one more that I have been to.
- 34:23Speaker 1: If you can get to a game in Manhattan, Kansas,
- 34:25Speaker 1: if you can get to a K-State game, they do
- 34:28Speaker 1: it right. Friday night in Aggieville, Saturday during the game,
- 34:32Speaker 1: they're tremendous people, and they love to party.
- 34:35Speaker 2: Wow. Andy, I'm surprised Rutgers isn't top of your list.
- 34:40Speaker 1: The grease trucks, I'd definitely hit the grease trucks for sure.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, pork roll.
- 34:44Speaker 4: All right.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Andy, thanks for your time. We'll talk to you later
- 34:46Speaker 2: in the season, buddy.
- 34:47Speaker 5: Thanks, guys.
- 34:48Speaker 3: See how excited he got when he started talking tailgating
- 34:50Speaker 3: and road trips?
- 34:51Speaker 2: Yeah. Boone, North Carolina. Are we going to lose you
- 34:53Speaker 2: to Boone? Is that a potential? The foliage is good
- 34:56Speaker 2: down there. The food is good.
- 34:57Speaker 3: They take those pictures in Boone in October, and it's
- 34:59Speaker 3: just gorgeous. Early November, we've got to get down there.
- 35:02Speaker 3: Not so fast road trip.
- 35:04Speaker 2: And I've never been to a home Army game. I
- 35:05Speaker 2: know you and DP go all the time. All right,
- 35:07Speaker 2: coming up on Not So Fast. We have a very
- 35:09Speaker 2: interesting NFL quote from the Dan Patrick show we're going
- 35:12Speaker 2: to dive into. Not so fast. Next. Yeah.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Also, Coastal Carolina, we've got to get to.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Oh, beautiful.
- 35:17Speaker 4: Boone.
- 35:18Speaker 3: I don't know if we can do that in the
- 35:19Speaker 3: same way.
- 35:24Speaker 1: The level of concern you have for your Broncos is what?
- 35:30Speaker 4: That would be a 10 out of 10. There is
- 35:32Speaker 4: nothing on offense, Dan, that they do well. I mean,
- 35:36Speaker 4: not one thing. They can't run it. They can't pass protect.
- 35:40Speaker 4: They can't throw it. They can't get open on one-on-one.
- 35:43Speaker 4: Their quarterback is a shell of his former self. He's
- 35:49Speaker 4: just totally unconfident.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I'm telling you, nothing they have done.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Like, they would be, if it wasn't for the defense
- 35:57Speaker 4: playing well and it wasn't for the defense creating turnovers,
- 36:00Speaker 4: they'd be 0-5 right now based on their offense.
- 36:03Speaker 2: That's how bad they are.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Tell us what you think, Mark Schlereth. Welcome back to
- 36:09Speaker 3: Not So Fast. This is the Cliff Joint, Paps and Perloff.
- 36:11Speaker 3: That's Mark Schlereth, the former Broncos. Very, very good offensive
- 36:16Speaker 3: lineman back in their heyday.
- 36:17Speaker 2: He.
- 36:18Speaker 3: He's not a hot take guy. We have Mark on.
- 36:20Speaker 3: He's giving his honest opinion. He thinks it's a total disaster.
- 36:24Speaker 2: 10 out of 10 seems a little extreme to me.
- 36:26Speaker 3: There are no more numbers after 10.
- 36:28Speaker 2: I hate to say this because he's very good, but
- 36:30Speaker 2: it sounded like a fan take, not an analytical take.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Now, he has a high bar, the players he played
- 36:36Speaker 3: with back in the day, in the prime Broncos days.
- 36:38Speaker 3: But he also watches every single snap of Bronco football.
- 36:42Speaker 2: He is out, out, out. Yeah, earlier in the show,
- 36:44Speaker 2: I said I think that they're underrated, and that makes
- 36:48Speaker 2: me feel worse about that take. But come on, dude.
- 36:50Speaker 2: I mean, listen, they have two tough losses. Last year,
- 36:53Speaker 2: they didn't do anything great on offense either, and they
- 36:55Speaker 2: got to the AFC title game at home.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Right, but he's making it sound like this is a
- 36:59Speaker 3: quarterback that's a problem, not a benefit in any way. Again,
- 37:03Speaker 3: Mark gives it to us straight. He talked also about
- 37:05Speaker 3: who's going to be fired, and he picked Nick Sirianniu.
- 37:08Speaker 3: So Mark's not afraid at all to say what he thinks,
- 37:11Speaker 3: but he believes what he thinks.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Listen, Mark Slareth has forgotten more about the Broncos than
- 37:15Speaker 2: I will ever know. Bo Nix is going to run
- 37:17Speaker 2: the football tonight and resuscitate that offense.
- 37:20Speaker 3: I'm setting the over-under at 29.5 yards rushing for Bo Nix.
- 37:24Speaker 2: Pretty high for Bo Nix, but I'm going over because
- 37:26Speaker 2: I think when you say 10 out of 10 panic scale,
- 37:29Speaker 2: it means it's time to throw all your chips in.
- 37:31Speaker 2: The Broncos got to really give it tonight.
- 37:33Speaker 3: That's an official bet, 29.5. All right, next up on
- 37:36Speaker 3: the Clip Joint. Brady Quinn, former Notre Dame quarterback, former
- 37:39Speaker 3: NFL quarterback, talked about Josh Hoover and IU and Dan's
- 37:43Speaker 3: reaction to Josh Hoover and IU.
- 37:47Speaker 6: I would say he started off the season better than
- 37:49Speaker 6: Mendoza did. Now, he hasn't had that huge game like
- 37:51Speaker 6: versus Illinois, but if you actually go back to their
- 37:53Speaker 6: Old Dominion game last season and even some of their
- 37:56Speaker 6: earlier games, he didn't pick up this offense quite as
- 38:00Speaker 6: fluidly as I think Hoover has. Obviously, Hoover came in
- 38:03Speaker 6: with more production, more experience. It was a little bit expected,
- 38:08Speaker 6: and quite frankly— He is a perfect fit for Mike
- 38:11Speaker 6: Shanahan and Kurt Cignetti's offense. I think part of the
- 38:14Speaker 6: perception with them is this. They haven't really played anyone
- 38:17Speaker 6: with the exception of what we saw last week on
- 38:19Speaker 6: the road versus Nebraska.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Well, it looks like somebody watches not so fast. Who
- 38:24Speaker 2: was singing the praises of Josh Hoover yesterday?
- 38:26Speaker 3: Yes, clearly Brady was sampling.
- 38:29Speaker 2: I said yesterday that he will move up extremely in
- 38:32Speaker 2: the Heisman rankings if he beats Ohio State. He started
- 38:35Speaker 2: out top five in the entire Heisman field, and then
- 38:38Speaker 2: he started to fall. He hasn't played anybody, and he's
- 38:40Speaker 2: looked okay. But Brady Quinn actually said that he's looked
- 38:43Speaker 2: better than okay, that he's running the system very well.
- 38:46Speaker 3: You know, like you said yesterday, this is the weekend
- 38:48Speaker 3: for Josh Hoover.
- 38:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:48Speaker 3: No one's talking about his 17 touchdowns and zero picks
- 38:51Speaker 3: because Indiana soaked up so much of the coverage last
- 38:54Speaker 3: year that it's almost like we're trying to find other stories.
- 38:58Speaker 3: And then Indiana's going to have to beat Ohio State
- 38:59Speaker 3: to force their way back into the headlines.
- 39:01Speaker 2: When you say that, it's really because they don't schedule anybody.
- 39:03Speaker 2: And their first two real tests were.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Northwestern and Nebraska. They weren't saucy games. They weren't tune-in games.
- 39:09Speaker 3: So the result wasn't actually blowouts. The Nebraska game actually
- 39:13Speaker 3: hurt Indiana by being down at halftime.
- 39:15Speaker 2: I just find it surprising that Hoover has just steadily
- 39:17Speaker 2: gone down in the odds. Why? Based on what? And
- 39:21Speaker 2: Brady Quinn made me feel better about that bet because
- 39:23Speaker 2: he looked at Dan like, ooh, I don't know. Hoover's
- 39:25Speaker 2: been almost as good as Mendoza, if not better.
- 39:28Speaker 3: Yeah, Hoover's going to be, this is his weekend.
- 39:29Speaker 2: It's all him. Okay. Alright, next let's go to Tom Verducci,
- 39:33Speaker 2: the great Tom Verducci. We love Tom. He joined DP
- 39:35Speaker 2: this morning and explained how he got here in the
- 39:38Speaker 2: National League Championship Series.
- 39:41Speaker 7: But I think how he got here, Dan, if you
- 39:43Speaker 7: watched that game last night, you saw the younger, harder-throwing
- 39:47Speaker 7: team just continue to dominate An older team is at
- 39:51Speaker 7: the end of its dynasty.
- 39:53Speaker 3: Dynasties age out.
- 39:54Speaker 7: That's what we're looking at right here. The Dodgers have
- 39:57Speaker 7: not hit a home run or tried to steal a
- 40:00Speaker 7: base in this series. They have one way to win,
- 40:03Speaker 7: and that is to slug. And the Milwaukee Brewers pitching
- 40:06Speaker 7: staff depresses slug more than any team in baseball.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Now, Verducci also said that taking Shohei Otani out of
- 40:14Speaker 2: the lineup, which is effectively what has happened, is like
- 40:16Speaker 2: taking Aaron Judge out of the Yankees lineup. It's just
- 40:19Speaker 2: not the same.
- 40:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm only going to give that so much because
- 40:22Speaker 3: Otani is fantastic. He's the best of all time. Not
- 40:24Speaker 3: all time, but like right now.
- 40:25Speaker 2: Right, right. He's the best of this era.
- 40:27Speaker 3: They have too much money and too many other players
- 40:29Speaker 3: that have also no-showed. So, I mean, like, I'm not
- 40:32Speaker 3: blaming Otani because he's legitimately hurt or having issues, whatever
- 40:35Speaker 3: it may be.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Right.
- 40:36Speaker 3: The rest of the lineup is fine to hit.
- 40:38Speaker 2: 350. Well, listen, it's easier to hit in a lineup
- 40:41Speaker 2: when you're pitching around Otani. Otani's either on base or
- 40:43Speaker 2: he hit a double or a home run.
- 40:45Speaker 3: Oh, and back in the day, just back in the
- 40:46Speaker 3: day last year, he was the leadoff hitter, and you
- 40:49Speaker 3: know he's going to be parked at first base or
- 40:50Speaker 3: hitting a home run.
- 40:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he covered up a lot of flaws.
- 40:52Speaker 2: All right, it's.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Time for the rando. We have three randos, thrice randos.
- 40:56Speaker 5: Ooh.
- 40:57Speaker 3: On the Not So Fast Show. New logo as well.
- 40:59Speaker 3: Look at that. Breaking out the box. The first rando
- 41:02Speaker 3: is this. You all remember the Bradley Chubb-Alaric Jackson incident
- 41:05Speaker 3: after the game the other day? The little fight after
- 41:08Speaker 3: the game? Here's a headline we saw. Chubb details pre-punch
- 41:12Speaker 3: convo with Jackson. Wasn't talking about mom. This is a
- 41:15Speaker 3: real headline on a real website, ESPN.com. Wasn't talking about mom.
- 41:20Speaker 3: If Bradley Chubb was talking about mom, would you rescind
- 41:23Speaker 3: the penalty for Alaric Jackson?
- 41:25Speaker 2: What are you talking about? No, of course not.
- 41:27Speaker 3: You can't make fun of mom.
- 41:29Speaker 2: That's what trash talking is. Yes, you're supposed to make
- 41:31Speaker 2: fun of mom. You're telling me every time somebody made
- 41:34Speaker 2: fun of your mother on a football field, we'd have
- 41:36Speaker 2: a fist fight?
- 41:37Speaker 3: Also, your mama jokes, I thought, ended in like 84, 85.
- 41:39Speaker 3: They're still out?
- 41:40Speaker 2: Oh, not in my world.
- 41:41Speaker 3: Oh, how about that?
- 41:42Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? That's the classic trash talk. I
- 41:45Speaker 2: think that's a ridiculous excuse.
- 41:46Speaker 3: I've been schooled. I guess I didn't know. All right,
- 41:48Speaker 3: Darren Revell, our buddy from Collect, posted this. Here's something
- 41:52Speaker 3: Reese's is doing for the holidays. I don't know what
- 41:54Speaker 3: he meant by the holidays. I mean Thanksgiving. Check this out.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Reese's is offering a Thanksgiving pie that is a 3.4-pound
- 42:02Speaker 3: Reese's peanut butter cup. Look at that thing. Only $ 3, 000
- 42:05Speaker 3: will be made. $ 45 plus tax is an absolute bargain
- 42:09Speaker 3: for that. I'd pay double. They'll be gone in the
- 42:11Speaker 3: next hour. I did check the website because we're journalists
- 42:13Speaker 3: here at Not So Fast.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Gone. They're gone. Well, it's interesting timing because October 31st
- 42:18Speaker 2: is when I collect my Reese's for the year.
- 42:20Speaker 3: From your kids?
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah, from the Halloween trick-or-treating. And I might have enough
- 42:23Speaker 2: Reese's in the closet to not need that pie.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Can you make an entire pie collective all the Reese's
- 42:28Speaker 3: that you hijack from the kids?
- 42:30Speaker 2: And you know my Halloween warm take is that Reese's
- 42:32Speaker 2: is actually a protein snack. It's not even a candy.
- 42:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it's absolutely good for you. Completely good for you.
- 42:37Speaker 3: It worked out for us. All right, last up, we'll
- 42:39Speaker 3: stay with the theme of Halloween. Check this one out.
- 42:41Speaker 3: In a random neighborhood in North Carolina, this huge inflated
- 42:44Speaker 3: pumpkin was going down the street. If I were a kid,
- 42:47Speaker 3: this would be the greatest thing I'd ever seen in
- 42:48Speaker 3: my life.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Or I'd be scared out of my mind and need therapy.
- 42:52Speaker 3: One of the two.
- 42:53Speaker 2: It looks a little bit like the Puff State Marshmallow
- 42:55Speaker 2: Man at the end of Ghostbusters.
- 42:57Speaker 3: And what is this buzzkill doing trying to get in
- 42:59Speaker 3: the way of it? Does he think he's going to
- 43:00Speaker 3: stop it? I hope it just crushes him. No offense.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Because let the kids enjoy this for a couple minutes.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Look how small that guy was compared to that pumpkin.
- 43:07Speaker 2: How many times have you watched this video so far, Paul?
- 43:10Speaker 3: 14 in the past 24 hours. All right, coming up next,
- 43:13Speaker 3: you can't wait, I can't wait. It's questions from the
- 43:16Speaker 3: back room. They ask questions, we come up with answers.
- 43:19Speaker 3: It's self-explanatory. Stick around. Not so fast. I could eat
- 43:24Speaker 3: Reese's for a living, by the way.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Reese's Pieces, Reese's Tops.
- 43:27Speaker 3: When my kids used to bring home the thing, I
- 43:29Speaker 3: would just take out like four, and they wouldn't notice.
- 43:31Speaker 3: And I'd take out another four, and they wouldn't notice.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Back on Not So Fast, I'm Perloff. He's Paps. All right, Paul,
- 43:37Speaker 2: let's go to the back room for questions from the
- 43:39Speaker 2: back room. Our guy, Dan Gardell, of course, DP Show editor,
- 43:43Speaker 2: host of the 1215 Club, and host of the new
- 43:45Speaker 2: baseball podcast, The Cutoff. All right, Dan, what do people
- 43:49Speaker 2: in the back room of the Dan Patrick Show want
- 43:50Speaker 2: to know?
- 43:51Speaker 8: Well, as you guys know, we are talking all the time,
- 43:53Speaker 8: and sometimes it has nothing to do with sports. But
- 43:55Speaker 8: we compiled some questions. We've got some things that we're
- 43:57Speaker 8: going to run to you. You guys have no idea
- 43:59Speaker 8: what's coming to you.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Less than no idea, Dan. All right, let's go to
- 44:02Speaker 3: the first question.
- 44:03Speaker 8: We all saw the Commander's debacle against the Giants on Sunday,
- 44:06Speaker 8: and we were all probably screaming on our television sets
- 44:09Speaker 8: about how we could have done a better job. So
- 44:11Speaker 8: I ask you guys, what job in sports do you
- 44:14Speaker 8: think you could be the best at and why?
- 44:16Speaker 2: I know. I'd be an amazing backup quarterback. Watch my
- 44:20Speaker 2: form here. It's called holding a clipboard like this.
- 44:23Speaker 3: You're tall.
- 44:25Speaker 2: I could provide moral support. I could play 12 years
- 44:28Speaker 2: and get a paycheck. I'm all about that.
- 44:31Speaker 3: You know, I got a couple here, Dan. I would
- 44:32Speaker 3: say I would be Shohei's interpreter. I can't speak Japanese,
- 44:36Speaker 3: but I wouldn't get in trouble and put him in
- 44:37Speaker 3: a jam. I would probably go caddy. I think I'm
- 44:40Speaker 3: good at giving advice to people. I don't mind carrying
- 44:42Speaker 3: a golf bag. I can't golf, but I think I
- 44:44Speaker 3: could help. And I look good in golf clothes. I
- 44:46Speaker 3: feel good about that.
- 44:47Speaker 2: You know, one thing about caddying, it's all about vision, Paul,
- 44:50Speaker 2: and be able to see the green.
- 44:52Speaker 3: I only have one eye that works, but it works
- 44:53Speaker 3: real well.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:54Speaker 8: Yeah, caddy was actually an answer that was said back here.
- 44:57Speaker 8: So you guys are along the same wavelength as some
- 44:59Speaker 8: of the BRGs. All right, let's move forward to the NFL.
- 45:02Speaker 8: We'll continue with the NFL, actually. Primetime slots. There's a
- 45:04Speaker 8: bunch of them nowadays. You can't miss them even if
- 45:07Speaker 8: you tried. Which slot in primetime do you guys think
- 45:10Speaker 8: is your favorite to watch your team play? Thursday, Sunday,
- 45:14Speaker 8: or Monday?
- 45:15Speaker 2: Okay. Thursday is a little tough because it's messing up
- 45:19Speaker 2: your week. When it's your team, you're not quite ready
- 45:22Speaker 2: for it. Usually Thursday when it's another team, it's like, oh,
- 45:24Speaker 2: this is a nice little treat. I'm going to go
- 45:26Speaker 2: Sunday night football because NBC does an amazing pregame show.
- 45:30Speaker 2: And they hype up your team. You'll get one or
- 45:31Speaker 2: two features. So for me, that feels like the game
- 45:35Speaker 2: of the week.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm going to agree with that. But since you
- 45:37Speaker 3: already took it, I will go Thursday. Because if your team,
- 45:39Speaker 3: I'm a Bears fan, if your team can get a
- 45:41Speaker 3: win on Thursday Night Football, The rest of the weekend
- 45:44Speaker 3: is cream cheese. You're just watching football with a win
- 45:46Speaker 3: in your pocket. You're watching games. You're not worried about anything.
- 45:49Speaker 3: You're completely relaxed on Sunday.
- 45:51Speaker 2: Right, and if you lose on Monday Night Football, that
- 45:53Speaker 2: is pure misery for four days.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Trust me.
- 45:55Speaker 8: Yeah, I thought Thursday night was probably the best one,
- 45:57Speaker 8: similar to what Paul was saying. Your team wins. You're
- 45:59Speaker 8: feeling great the rest of the weekend. Even if your
- 46:01Speaker 8: team loses, the anger is kind of worn off by
- 46:03Speaker 8: the time there's Sunday, and there's plenty of NFL football
- 46:04Speaker 8: to watch with no stress to it.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Good call.
- 46:07Speaker 8: All right, let's go to the last one here, MLB postseason.
- 46:09Speaker 8: We saw Jacob Mizorowski pitch against the Dodgers in Game 1.
- 46:12Speaker 8: the famous 105-mile-an-hour fastball. So I'll ask you guys as
- 46:16Speaker 8: I flip my paper over, would you rather throw 105
- 46:19Speaker 8: miles an hour or hit a home run off 105-mile-an-hour fastball?
- 46:24Speaker 3: Oh, man, that reminds me of one of the great
- 46:26Speaker 3: pitching matches of all time. There was a guy named
- 46:28Speaker 3: Eric Gagne. He used to be a flamethrowing reliever going
- 46:31Speaker 3: against Barry Bonds. And he threw one up 101 or
- 46:33Speaker 3: 102 up and into Bonds. Bonds hit it 500 feet,
- 46:35Speaker 3: just foul. And Gagne said, he goes, there's like one
- 46:42Speaker 3: guy on earth who could have touched that baseball. I
- 46:44Speaker 3: would like to hit it. You know, now it seems
- 46:45Speaker 3: like a lot of people can throw 102 plus, but,
- 46:49Speaker 3: and that's a great business to be in if you
- 46:50Speaker 3: could throw a 102 plus, but to be able to
- 46:52Speaker 3: park one of those, that'd be awesome.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, look at Gagne, for example, he was
- 46:55Speaker 2: throwing heat at 99. Now a middle reliever throws a
- 46:58Speaker 2: slider at 99. For me, the one thing in sports
- 47:01Speaker 2: I want to do is hit a home run and
- 47:02Speaker 2: run around those bases.
- 47:04Speaker 3: What were the answers in Beck, Danny G?
- 47:06Speaker 8: A little bit of mixed reaction. Personally, I can't score
- 47:09Speaker 8: up 60 miles an hour, so if you're telling me
- 47:11Speaker 8: I can hit 105, it means I'm probably a good
- 47:13Speaker 8: hitter and I'm probably getting paid to do it. So
- 47:16Speaker 8: I would probably go with that, but a lot of
- 47:17Speaker 8: mixed reactions, as you guys know. We have a bunch
- 47:19Speaker 8: of different opinions back here. It's a never-ending answer.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you go into the batting cage, a 60-mile-an-hour fastball
- 47:25Speaker 2: feels like it's coming way too fast.
- 47:27Speaker 3: You could swing twice at that.
- 47:28Speaker 2: I wouldn't even see if it was 105.
- 47:29Speaker 8: I'd go with the slow-pitch softball. That's kind of more
- 47:33Speaker 8: my league. Plus, there's a little bit more beer involved
- 47:35Speaker 8: in that.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Great job, Danny G. Great job back there.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Thanks, Dan. Thanks, guys.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Pearl, I love questions from the back room. It's a
- 47:43Speaker 3: lot of fun. It's always fun. but we have to
- 47:45Speaker 3: get to questions from the fans of the show, the
- 47:47Speaker 3: numerous fans, the NSFers, as we like to call them.
- 47:50Speaker 3: Constructed criticism time.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Here we go, Pro.
- 47:52Speaker 3: We got one, and it's a hammer.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Ready? Okay.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Trough urinal versus standard urinal.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Wow. Which is just a urinal.
- 48:02Speaker 3: Yeah. I love the trough. I grew up going to
- 48:04Speaker 3: Cubs games, going to, like, old Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks games.
- 48:08Speaker 3: The trough keeps things moving in every sense of the phrase.
- 48:12Speaker 3: It's not the most sanitary. You've got to keep your
- 48:14Speaker 3: eyes up north of the border. But I'm a trough guy.
- 48:17Speaker 2: I think troughs are one of the most disgusting things
- 48:19Speaker 2: in America. And standard urinals, absolute perfection. Why on earth
- 48:25Speaker 2: would you want a trough? And also, you know at
- 48:28Speaker 2: some point someone's getting hammered and jumping into that.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Oh, trough diving at Wrigley Field? It's happened before. I
- 48:33Speaker 3: would love a trough on my house. Probably can't get
- 48:34Speaker 3: it past the goalie.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Why would you? Oh, God. It's so gross. I 100% disagree.
- 48:39Speaker 3: Much more on this topic tomorrow on Not So Fast.
- 48:41Speaker 3: The feel-good? Here's the feel-good. This is great. Cal football,
- 48:45Speaker 3: very good uniforms, partnered with the Grateful Dead. Look at
- 48:48Speaker 3: these helmets. I'm not even a Grateful Dead fan, really,
- 48:51Speaker 3: and these are super cool.
- 48:53Speaker 2: That's neat. Our buddy Mike Silver, the NFL reporter, is
- 48:55Speaker 2: going to love these. A deadhead and a cowgrab.
- 48:57Speaker 3: Now, if they don't play well, Grateful Dead.
- 49:01Speaker 2: On arrival. Yeah, yeah.
- 49:02Speaker 3: Nice job by you there, former headline writer for Sports Illustrated.
- 49:06Speaker 3: Good-looking uniforms.
- 49:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Listen, Cal football is a funny one because you
- 49:11Speaker 2: never really think about them in the National Football Contender.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Then their quarterback is a superstar. All right.
- 49:15Speaker 3: Before we go, Nicole Auerbach of NBC Sports on this
- 49:18Speaker 3: show tomorrow.
- 49:18Speaker 5: Nice.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Who you got tonight, bro? Steelers.
- 49:20Speaker 2: I'm going with the Seahawks. Yeah. I'm going to Underdog Denver.
- 49:24Speaker 3: Underdog Denver.
- 49:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 49:25Speaker 3: I will take the Seahawks.
- 49:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 49:27Speaker 3: Tune into the Dan Patch Show tomorrow right here on
- 49:29Speaker 3: NBC Sports. Then hang with us at Not So Fast
- 49:32Speaker 3: right after.
- 49:39Speaker 4: Bye.
- 49:39Speaker 6: Bye.
