- 0:00Speaker 1: For Mark today. Here's Ken Rosatto and good to be
- 0:04Speaker 1: with you right now, eleven forty two on your Thursday morning.
- 0:06Speaker 1: You know, the federal government has been shut down now
- 0:08Speaker 1: for fifteen days, all because a handful of Democrats in
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Senate refused to sign with the near one hundred
- 0:15Speaker 1: percent of Republicans who've already voted to pass the continuing
- 0:18Speaker 1: Resolution in the House, and fifty two of the fifty
- 0:21Speaker 1: three Republican senators voted for it. Yet the left keeps
- 0:24Speaker 1: trying to blame the shutdown on Republicans. Well, joining us
- 0:27Speaker 1: out to talk about the shutdown as New York Congressman
- 0:30Speaker 1: Mike Lawler. He represents the low Hutson Valley, My family
- 0:33Speaker 1: all lives there. Good morning to you, Congressman, Thanks for
- 0:36Speaker 1: having me. Good to have you on. And before we
- 0:40Speaker 1: before we even go into the shutdown, I got to
- 0:41Speaker 1: ask you, so you went face to face with Hakeem Jeffries,
- 0:45Speaker 1: what was that like? Because it looked like he was
- 0:47Speaker 1: a little testy. He wasn't. He wasn't having it, but
- 0:49Speaker 1: neither were you.
- 0:51Speaker 2: He was. He was angry, he was yelling, he was stuttering,
- 0:55Speaker 2: he was stammering, and he couldn't answer a single question.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And you know, my point going to him was to
- 1:02Speaker 2: call out the hypocrisy of his position. Number one on
- 1:06Speaker 2: shutting the government down under Joe Biden, thirteen times he
- 1:11Speaker 2: and Chuck Schumer voted to keep the government open and
- 1:13Speaker 2: funded passing clean crs. And number two, to point out that, look,
- 1:17Speaker 2: if you're saying healthcare is the issue, I'm on a
- 1:21Speaker 2: bipartisan bill to extend these subsidies by a year. Join us,
- 1:25Speaker 2: get on the bill, champion it with us. And he
- 1:28Speaker 2: wouldn't do it. And in fact, you know, he just
- 1:31Speaker 2: evolved into personal insults and you know, really had no
- 1:36Speaker 2: substance to his position because it's indefensible what he and
- 1:40Speaker 2: Chuck Schumer have done, right, I mean, Chuck Schumer government down.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Congressman. If I A when Chuck Schumer was going into
- 1:46Speaker 1: his news conference two and a half weeks ago, wasn't
- 1:48Speaker 1: he going in to say that he apparently that he
- 1:50Speaker 1: was going to sign on to this, to the Continuing Resolution.
- 1:54Speaker 1: But apparently, I mean, he knows he has AOC on
- 1:56Speaker 1: his backside. So suddenly he goes up there and he says,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I am, I'm not going to sign in to this
- 2:02Speaker 1: no Senator will. It was just so obvious that it's
- 2:05Speaker 1: all politics with them, and the idea that they would
- 2:08Speaker 1: try to blame this on the right. With everybody on
- 2:10Speaker 1: the right, with the exception of what Rand Paul, everybody
- 2:13Speaker 1: on the right is supporting the continuing resolution, How on
- 2:16Speaker 1: earth do you blame Republicans for this?
- 2:19Speaker 2: It's absurd, And in fact, John Fetterman last night said
- 2:23Speaker 2: that this is entirely the Democrat's fault. The Republicans are
- 2:27Speaker 2: not responsible for this. And so, you know, Chuck Schumer
- 2:31Speaker 2: and Hakeem Jeffries have made a political calculation, and the
- 2:35Speaker 2: political calculation is that they need to show their progressive
- 2:39Speaker 2: left base that they are standing up to Trump, that
- 2:42Speaker 2: they're fighting back against Donald Trump. That's all this is about.
- 2:46Speaker 2: It has nothing to do with healthcare, It has nothing
- 2:48Speaker 2: to do with government spending. It has to do with
- 2:51Speaker 2: them showing their base that they are big and bad
- 2:53Speaker 2: and tough. I mean so much. Show that Chuck Schumer
- 2:57Speaker 2: changed his glasses to look hits. It's absurd, but this
- 3:03Speaker 2: is what we're dealing with. And so you know, AOC
- 3:07Speaker 2: was asked last night on a town hall, are you
- 3:09Speaker 2: going to primary Schumer? And she wouldn't answer the question
- 3:11Speaker 2: because we know the answer right is yes. And that's
- 3:14Speaker 2: what he's afraid of. That's what he's concerned about. He
- 3:17Speaker 2: doesn't want to lose his grip on power in the
- 3:20Speaker 2: Democratic Conference, and he took so much incoming in March
- 3:24Speaker 2: when he voted for a clean cr So their position
- 3:29Speaker 2: is entirely absurd. And that was my point in going
- 3:33Speaker 2: and basically exposing Jeffries for the partisan hack that he is.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Well, you and you did that, and the fact that
- 3:39Speaker 1: the fact that you did that, it was like you
- 3:41Speaker 1: whipped a band aid off a scab. He was so
- 3:45Speaker 1: ticked off the fact that he had no means of
- 3:47Speaker 1: saying anything productive and intelligent back, but to spit and
- 3:51Speaker 1: get angry. When I say spit, I mean spittle. I
- 3:53Speaker 1: don't mean he actually spitted you. You know that. But to
- 3:56Speaker 1: do that just uncovered everything about him. Just remind everybody
- 4:00Speaker 1: you're listening to seven to ten woar the Voice of
- 4:03Speaker 1: New York. This is Ken Rosotto on a Thursday in
- 4:06Speaker 1: for the Great Mark Simone with one of my favorite
- 4:09Speaker 1: Congress members of all time, Mike Lawler, who represents the
- 4:12Speaker 1: Lower Hudson Valley. My family all and friends all living
- 4:15Speaker 1: in that friends and Putnam County family in Westchester County,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and they all voted for you, by the way, just
- 4:20Speaker 1: to put it on record. But so now I love
- 4:23Speaker 1: the fact that the Democrats will never seemingly understand the
- 4:27Speaker 1: Great Donald Trump that when they are playing cheap checkers,
- 4:31Speaker 1: this guy is playing advanced chess and he's already figured
- 4:35Speaker 1: out how to across them. Of course, not only with
- 4:39Speaker 1: the shutdown. So he's getting the military paid, and he's
- 4:43Speaker 1: putting the Democrats in a situation where they have to say, no,
- 4:46Speaker 1: you can't pay the military.
- 4:48Speaker 2: That's not allowed.
- 4:49Speaker 1: So that makes them even look more foolish. And on
- 4:51Speaker 1: top of that, now the big Gateway tunnel project, which
- 4:55Speaker 1: was Chuck Schumer's big championing project for twenty years, he said, no,
- 5:01Speaker 1: now it's all over. But bye, it's all on you, Chuck.
- 5:03Speaker 1: So do you think that that'll be permanent or do
- 5:05Speaker 1: you think that's something that could be renegotiated now when
- 5:07Speaker 1: we come back.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Well, this is the stupidity of Chuck Schumer and Hakeem
- 5:13Speaker 2: Jeffrey's position, and they're starting to hurt New Yorkers, and
- 5:18Speaker 2: you know they should stop playing games. They should stop
- 5:21Speaker 2: putzing around. They should do their jobs. Go vote today
- 5:25Speaker 2: to open the government back up. There is no benefit
- 5:29Speaker 2: to a government shutdown. You are hurting the American people,
- 5:33Speaker 2: You're hurting those serving in the military. You're hurting those
- 5:36Speaker 2: who are reliant on programs like Wick and SNAP, and
- 5:40Speaker 2: you're hurting New Yorkers and moreover, they're costing US about
- 5:44Speaker 2: fifteen billion dollars a day in GDP because of the
- 5:49Speaker 2: stupidity of all of this. You know, at a time
- 5:51Speaker 2: when Donald Trump is securing Middle East peace and getting
- 5:55Speaker 2: a ceasefire and getting the hostages released, these idiots are
- 5:58Speaker 2: holding the American people hostage for nothing, for no gain
- 6:03Speaker 2: or reason other than their own political self interest and
- 6:07Speaker 2: trying to appease a radical left base.
- 6:10Speaker 1: And for what it's worth. And for those who don't understand,
- 6:13Speaker 1: we're talking about passing a continuing resolution, which means the
- 6:17Speaker 1: existing spending plan for which the Democrats voted in lockstep
- 6:21Speaker 1: a year ago, they would continue it for another few
- 6:25Speaker 1: weeks while you could all get together and negotiate a
- 6:27Speaker 1: brand new spending plan for next year. Do I have
- 6:29Speaker 1: that right, Congressman, You got it spot on. So that's
- 6:33Speaker 1: all it is. How is it that the Democrats when
- 6:35Speaker 1: Biden was president, they were all for this, and now
- 6:38Speaker 1: the Trump, the orange man bad is president. Oh, we
- 6:41Speaker 1: can't support this. It is such pure hypocrisy. And the
- 6:45Speaker 1: fact that in this day and age, this era of
- 6:47Speaker 1: the Internet, that CHUCKI, Chuck Schumer can think that people
- 6:50Speaker 1: are not going to look it up and see what's
- 6:52Speaker 1: really going on is laughable. I think this is going
- 6:55Speaker 1: to backfire on them, big ten.
- 6:57Speaker 2: And no question. You know, Chuck Schumer last week was
- 7:00Speaker 2: quoted as saying, every day gets better for us. Who's us?
- 7:04Speaker 2: Us is the Democratic Party. They don't care about the
- 7:07Speaker 2: American people. They don't care about the impact on the
- 7:09Speaker 2: American people. This is about protecting their own hide within
- 7:14Speaker 2: the base of their party and trying to stave off
- 7:16Speaker 2: any primaries or plays on leadership. That's all this, that's
- 7:22Speaker 2: all this is about. And so you look at it
- 7:24Speaker 2: and you know, to me, this isn't about polls. It's
- 7:27Speaker 2: not about who's winning or losing. The only people being
- 7:31Speaker 2: hurt here are the American people. And it is shameful,
- 7:35Speaker 2: it is wrong. I pushed back against it when Republicans
- 7:38Speaker 2: wanted to do it. Under Joe Biden because of his
- 7:40Speaker 2: open border policies. While I agreed with them on the
- 7:43Speaker 2: merits of Biden's policies being disastrous, that's not the way
- 7:48Speaker 2: to fix it. You don't shut the government down as
- 7:51Speaker 2: a means of trying to fix it. And Democrats all said,
- 7:56Speaker 2: you can't do that, you can't do that, you can't
- 7:58Speaker 2: try to exert policy changes at the barrel of a gun.
- 8:02Speaker 2: And yet that's precisely what they are doing right now.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Congressman, if you were a betting man, how long would
- 8:07Speaker 1: you say this might last?
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think it's going to go on for quite a while.
- 8:12Speaker 2: There seems to be no willingness on their part. I mean,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you had a Democratic staffer say we'll keep it shut
- 8:19Speaker 2: down until a plane pulls out of the sky. I mean, forbids.
- 8:22Speaker 2: That's how foolish these people are. It's totally unnecessary. It
- 8:27Speaker 2: needs to stop. Unfortunately, you know, I think we're in
- 8:31Speaker 2: this for quite a while.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Well, let's hope that maybe more calm minds and hearts
- 8:37Speaker 1: will prevail and we get this taken care of sooner
- 8:40Speaker 1: rather than later. It is so good to have you on.
- 8:42Speaker 1: He represents New York's seventeenth Congressional district, including the Lower
- 8:46Speaker 1: Hudson Valley. Congressman Mike Lawler, thank you so much for
- 8:48Speaker 1: fighting the good fight and coming on the Mark Simone
- 8:50Speaker 1: Show today.
- 8:52Speaker 2: I appreciate it. Thanks so much.
