Latest / Joyful Menopause / Episode 29: Why Am I Gaining Weight When I'm Barely Eating?
Transcript
- 0:00Have you ever found yourself thinking, I'm barely eating.
- 0:04How am I gaining weight?
- 0:06Maybe you've cut portions down.
- 0:08Maybe you skip breakfast.
- 0:09Maybe we eat lighter than anyone else in your house, and yet your clothes are tighter, your belly feels softer, and the scale keeps creeping up.
- 0:17And what makes it worse is that you're trying so hard.
- 0:20If this is you, I want you to take a breath right now.
- 0:24Take a deep breath.
- 0:26Remember, your body is not broken.
- 0:29You are not failing, and this is not about willpower.
- 0:33In fact, what if I told you that for many women in perimenopause and menopause, the weight gain isn't happening because you're eating too much.
- 0:41It may be happening because your body thinks you're not eating enough.
- 0:45Today we're going to talk about why weight gain can happen even when you're doing everything, quote unquote, right?
- 0:51We'll talk about metabolic adaptation, undereating, muscle loss, stress, and sleep.
- 0:56And I'm going to tell you a story of a woman who was doing everything perfectly and her body was stuck and what finally helped her shift.
- 1:04So let's get started.
- 1:05Menopause doesn't have to feel like you are living in someone else's body.
- 1:09Your host, Lynda Enright, has spent the last 25 years helping women to thrive in midlife.
- 1:14Here you'll find science-based practical advice that you can start using today to get real results for your health.
- 1:20Welcome to Joyful Menopause.
- 1:27So many women come to me and say, Lynda, I promise you I am not overeating.
- 1:31And I believe them because the women I work with are disciplined.
- 1:34They've dieted for decades.
- 1:36They know what a healthy plate looks like.
- 1:38It's not that they're not eating really good nourishing food, but here's what I generally help them to see is sometimes the problem isn't overeating.
- 1:48It's years of dieting.
- 1:49I talked to a woman yesterday that was saying she'd done Weight Watchers for years, and it was really hard to get her brain away from that restriction mindset.
- 1:56If this resonates with you and you've been stuck for a while.
- 1:59This is exactly the kind of thing we talk through when I talk to women on discovery calls when we get started.
- 2:05Because once you see what's happening, then everything else starts to make more sense.
- 2:11So let's talk a little bit about metabolic adaptation.
- 2:14So your body is really smart, and when it senses long-term calorie restriction, whether it's intentional or not, it starts to adapt.
- 2:23It slows down.
- 2:25This again is called metabolic adaptation.
- 2:27Your body says, oh, my goodness, food is scarce.
- 2:31We need to conserve energies.
- 2:33So it burns fewer calories at rest.
- 2:35It increases efficiency.
- 2:37It stores fat better, and it signals more hunger.
- 2:40And during menopause, when estrogen is declining, your body can be even more sensitive to stress and that sort of perceived famine that might be happening.
- 2:49So if you've dieted for years or chronically eaten just enough, your metabolism may have quietly downshifted a little bit, not because you did something wrong, but because your body is really good at protecting you.
- 3:01It's really good at keeping you alive.
- 3:03And the solution is not to diet harder, to push more; it's to rebuild trust with your body.
- 3:10So let's talk about something I see happening a lot.
- 3:13The barely eating pattern.
- 3:15It often looks like coffee for breakfast, maybe a small salad for lunch, a modest dinner, maybe a handful of nuts.
- 3:21On paper it seems reasonable, right?
- 3:23But when we add it up, it's often not really what your metabolism needs, especially as we get into midlife.
- 3:31So when you're consistently under fueling, a lot of things happen.
- 3:35Your blood sugar can start to fluctuate, becomes unstable.
- 3:39We can see cortisol rise, that stress hormone.
- 3:42Your muscle can start to break down, which is key for metabolic health, and your body can hold on to extra fat for protection.
- 3:49So here's the part that might be really hard to hear.
- 3:52Eating less does not always mean weighing less.
- 3:55Sometimes it means your body is stressed and clinging tighter.
- 4:00If you're unsure whether you're under fueling, this is something that we talk about really clearly inside my practice.
- 4:06It's, it's not about guessing: it's about understanding what your body specifically needs.
- 4:12Let's talk a little bit about muscle.
- 4:13After age 40, women naturally lose muscle mass, and dieting restriction can accelerate that loss.
- 4:22Muscle is your metabolic engine.
- 4:24It burns calories even when you're sleeping.
- 4:28So when you have less muscle, your metabolic rate slows down, so you can then eat even less and still gain weight.
- 4:36So again, this isn't because you're failing, you're doing anything wrong.
- 4:39It's because your metabolic engine has just gotten a little bit smaller, and this is why we want to focus on strength training.
- 4:46We want to focus on adequate protein.
- 4:48These are things that are not optional as we get into midlife: they're absolutely protective.
- 4:54So, let me tell you a story about a woman I worked with.
- 4:57I'll call her Sarah.
- 4:59Sarah came to me exhausted and discouraged.
- 5:02She said, I'm doing everything right.
- 5:04I'm not eating very much.
- 5:06I'm exercising, you know, I, I'm doing everything the way I think I should be.
- 5:10Common.
- 5:11That's what I hear all the time.
- 5:12So again, her typical day, she'd have coffee in the morning.
- 5:15She'd have a yogurt, maybe mid-morning she'd have a salad with some chicken on it.
- 5:19She'd have a light dinner, didn't have dessert, and every day she was walking and-and doing some cardio exercise.
- 5:26She was really proud of the discipline she had, but she was super frustrat.
- 5:30And because she was gaining weight, she was sleeping like crap.
- 5:34She was craving sugar all the time, and she was exhausted.
- 5:36And when we looked closer, what we saw was she wasn't overeating; she wasn't getting enough protein; she wasn't consistently giving her body the fuel that it needed.
- 5:46She had a tremendous amount of stress.
- 5:48She wasn't sleeping good, and she had this long dieting history where she, you know, again, the, the Weight Watchers mindset and I'm, I'm going to get bashed for, for hating on Weight Watchers.
- 6:00Weight Watchers, you know, huge program has helped a lot of people, but it's not for everybody.
- 6:06And I still think it can be that sort of restrictive mindset.
- 6:10And it's, and I use those that term Weight Watchers kind of generally, that a lot of women in our fifties and sixties, you know, what we were taught about dieting and eating well in our twenties and thirties was really that restrictive mindset, and that just doesn't work when we get into midlife.
- 6:26It didn't work then either, but it certainly doesn't work now.
- 6:29So for Sarah, her body wasn't broken, you know, it was just kind of worn out.
- 6:33So we slowly started to increase her protein.
- 6:36We stabilized her meals, created some better consistency.
- 6:39We added strength training.
- 6:41We figured out a better sleep routine.
- 6:43Um, that really made a huge difference.
- 6:45And we reduced that food fear.
- 6:48Like it wasn't about restricting and, you know, worrying about every calorie that you put in your mouth, but really focusing on nourishing your body.
- 6:56So, you know, she was really scared to eat more at first.
- 6:59And, and I get it, it's scary when you're not losing weight and, and I suggest that you start eating more.
- 7:04But for some women, that's the balance that really needs to be shifted.
- 7:08So within some weeks, you know, her energy definitely improved, her cravings dropped, her sleep got better, and she started to see the weight shifting gently but sustainably.
- 7:19So, you know, not because we were restricting more, but because we were building that foundation.
- 7:24You hear me talk about all the time: it's all about building the foundation of good health and creating that stable situation for your body is going to get better results.
- 7:33So that's an important distinction there.
- 7:36So when you're undereating and when you're stressed, your cortisol rises.
- 7:41So, cortisol is really good at storing fat, especially abdominal fat and poor sleep causes increased hunger hormones, creates more craving, lowers our sensitivity to insulin, slows our metabolism down.
- 7:56So, you cannot diet your way out of a stressed body.
- 7:59A stressed body is going to hold on for dear life.
- 8:02A nourished body can start to let go, can relax, and not necessarily panic about every little store of excess fat.
- 8:11If, if you're listening to this and you're thinking like, this is me.
- 8:15I am tired of fighting my body, I want you to know this is exactly the work that I just love to do with women.
- 8:21Because you don't have to keep guessing.
- 8:23You don't have to keep restricting.
- 8:25You don't have to figure it out alone.
- 8:28If you remember nothing else from today, remember this: eating less is not always the answer.
- 8:34Your metabolism adapts to restriction, so we want to teach our body that it's safe.
- 8:41Muscle matters a lot in midlife.
- 8:45I would dare say it matters more than cardio.
- 8:48Cardio is good, too.
- 8:49I mean, we need to move our body in lots of different ways, but so often women are not doing the strength training that they need, um, in midlife for, for so many reasons, for metabolic health that we're talking about, but bone health as well.
- 9:00It's, it's important for so many ways, so many reasons.
- 9:03Stress and sleep are metabolic drivers.
- 9:07So, when we're under chronic stress and we are not getting enough sleep, not allowing ourselves to get enough sleep, even that's going to have an impact.
- 9:15And stop dieting, you know, really start stabilizing, start building a foundation.
- 9:20That is the key.
- 9:21Your body is not your enemy.
- 9:24It's responding to what it's been given.
- 9:27If this episode resonated and you're tired of doing everything again, quote unquote, right, and still feeling stuck, I invite you to schedule a free call with me.
- 9:36Let's chat about it.
- 9:37Let's just see what's going on with you and see what might be some good next steps.
- 9:42On that call we'll talk about what's happening in your metabolism, where your body might be under some stress, and what your next step might be.
- 9:50So no pressure, just clarity, because sometimes the shift isn't more discipline; it's just understanding better.
- 9:57You know, the work smarter, not harder idea.
- 10:00You can find the link in the show notes to schedule that free call.
- 10:04And remember, your body is not broken, it's protective, and when you start nourishing and stabilizing it, everything can start to change.
- 10:13Thanks for being here today.
- 10:15I hope you enjoyed it and keep in touch.
