- 1:38the Macincheese Cookoff to benefit the Childhood Language Center. It's all happening this Saturday
- 1:44morning. Starts at eleven a Capitol Market. Details available on Dave Alland Radio
- 1:48and Facebook at the Dave Allen Show on X The artist formerly known as Twitter
- 1:52and I'm going to be spending some time talking about this mac and cheese cookoff
- 1:55coming up a little bit later on. The show is always if there's not
- 1:57a Parmar store near you now, there will be soon. So we got
- 2:00mac and cheese on the agenda today. We are going to have some politics
- 2:04in there. We got Ryan Weld, who is a candidate for Attorney General
- 2:07also state senator. He is going to be joining the show. He'll actually
- 2:10be in the studio with us, coming up a little bit later on.
- 2:14But keeping it on the food tip, I want to bring in a good
- 2:16friend, Joe Stevens from the Nitro Convention in Visitors Bureau. Joe, good
- 2:21morning. How are you? Good morning, David, how are you?
- 2:23I am fine. You know I am not going to spend the entire show,
- 2:27I promise talking about food, but I do have two food segments today
- 2:31and one of those I'll get to a little bit later. I will throw
- 2:34some politics in the middle as well. But again Saturday in Nitro it's the
- 2:38Wagon Tails and Nitro Ales beer Fest and Chili Cookoff starts at eleven at the
- 2:45Living Memorial Park there in Nitro. Tell us all about it, Joe,
- 2:49Well, it's an annual event that we have here in Nitro. It's one
- 2:53of the larger chili cookoffs in the area. It's a sanctioned the cookoffs,
- 2:58which means the way in the three categories home style, chili, Birdie and
- 3:04also the traditional red will be representing the Wagging Tails and nitro Ales, Smoke
- 3:09on the Water addition Cookoff at the World Championships in twenty twenty four in Myrtle
- 3:15Beach. But it's a fun time and it's an event that we use to
- 3:21be able to raise money for not only for some the Wagging Tails scenarios,
- 3:28Itty Bitty Kitty, the Charleston Humane Society K nine rescue folks, but also
- 3:35Hospice in the area. Will be selling all the tickets for sampling and all
- 3:40the proceeds from that will be going to hospice. So it's a fun time
- 3:45for everybody to enjoy a day out on a Saturday, and it's also fun
- 3:49that we're raising money for some good causes. Absolutely, and it is always
- 3:53a big event and everybody looks forward to this whatevery year. And again there's
- 3:57all kinds of chili fests in the area and I've been a part of different
- 4:00ones and I've judged and things of that nature of interview as well. But
- 4:02I will tell you this one is a little bit different, as you said,
- 4:05because this is like competition level, as if, as you said,
- 4:10you win here and you could go elsewhere exactly. We've had representatives from the
- 4:15Cookolf each year representing the City of Nitro's event and Wagon Tails and Nitroales Cookoff
- 4:23and that occurs. The cookoff, the National Cookoff occurs around September and Myrtle
- 4:28Beach every year and we've had some folks tell cooking there each year. Just
- 4:32to kind of categorize the three types of chili that will be judged on Saturday
- 4:38by a group of judges. David, you've judged it before. But we've
- 4:43got the Homestyle competition, which is basically what you would want to serve at
- 4:47a Super Bowl party is then anything goes type of thing, and you have
- 4:51to use beans in this competition for the Homestyle category. That is followed up
- 4:59by the Green chili or the Verdi chili, and that will be also judged.
- 5:04And then the traditional red. The traditional red does not have beans or
- 5:09any type of filler. It's basically beef and broth is the way it is
- 5:14described in the ICs Handbook, and we will have that. Along that line,
- 5:21we will also have a People's Choice Award, and that's where the folks
- 5:26at Hospice comes in. They are selling tickets to for a dollar and you
- 5:30go around and you taste the chili's and you have to have a ticket to
- 5:33taste the chilies. Everybody is. There's some cooks that are doing just people's
- 5:40choice, Like the Nitro Fire Department is doing people's choice. Adie Bitty Kitty
- 5:44Committee is doing people's choice. Crematorium, tet Prematorium is doing a people's choice,
- 5:51the Nitro Police Department is doing a people's choice. And then all the
- 5:55cooks also have People's Choice chili. And the way you vote is you get
- 5:59it back the bones a bag of dog bones, and you will deposit those
- 6:03as many dog bones as you want into the receptacle at the cook's tent,
- 6:09and whoever has the largest poundage of dog bones at the end of the day
- 6:14will be crowned the People's Choice champion of a cook off. David. Now,
- 6:17I am presuming that people just want to come and check it out,
- 6:20Joe, because it is going to be in a public place and you're not
- 6:23really charging admissions, so to speak, unless people want to sample the chili.
- 6:28SOEs that the way to work? Oh yeah, exactly. Everything is
- 6:30open. Everything is basically set up on Second Avenue from twenty first Street to
- 6:36nineteenth Street, right there in front of Living Memorial Park in the City Hall
- 6:42and the Nitro Elementary School. We call it Chili Row and all the vendors
- 6:46will be intermixed within the cooks, but we will also have craft beers being
- 6:54distributed throughout the day and again and it's a really cool thing. Legislature last
- 7:00year passed a new Fairs and Festivals beer license that for nonprofits can do this
- 7:11in a very orderly and legal fashion. And eighty percent of the proceeds from
- 7:15the beer sales on Saturday will be going to the various charities. So we'll
- 7:20have that, We'll have some food on hands, some food trucks will be
- 7:24coming in here, a lot of the merchants on twenty first Street will be
- 7:28opened, and a lot of vendors will be happening. So yes, it's
- 7:31a free you don't have to pay to play, as it may be.
- 7:35But remember when you do step up and buy some chili and buy some craft
- 7:42beers to go along with it, you are giving back to the community and
- 7:46to the worthwhile causes that we're raising money for a couple other things, David.
- 7:51We will have Decca the Nitrol High School. Decca Club will be having
- 7:56a booth where they're selling pretzel Necklaces started it a couple of years ago and
- 8:01a lot of people enjoy that. And the Nitro Show Choir will be having
- 8:09coffee and hot chocolate as it will be a bit chili. It's a fall
- 8:13day and chili and coffee and some beers. It will be a fun time.
- 8:18Well, it always is. And here's the thing. Going back to
- 8:20chili for a moment, Jenny, and we're talking with Joe Stevens from the
- 8:22Nitro Convention and Visitors Bureau. The thing about chili that I know is,
- 8:26and I know chili is it's almost like pizza or hot dogs. People will
- 8:31get in these food arguments over well, real chili doesn't have this, or
- 8:35real pizza or real hot dogs don't have this, or whatever. The way
- 8:39I look at it is there's no such thing as bad chili. There's just
- 8:43different types. And I agree with that with pizza and hot dogs and what
- 8:46not. To are you are you with me on that, Joe straight David,
- 8:52it's it's it's everybody's got a pal it. Everybody likes it a different
- 8:56way. The cooks, actually most the majority of the cooks have cooked at
- 9:01the World Championships and in different locations they'll they'll gear their recipes to what has
- 9:09been done in the past. Say, if you go up in Ohio,
- 9:11maybe the Cincinnati Columbus area sweet chili will win more more often than not.
- 9:18Here, it's gotta have some backbite to it, some back seat, as
- 9:22it may be. It's it doesn't need to be nuclear. But you'll see
- 9:28some various chilis that will be judged. And again we've we've got the judging
- 9:33is very a very serious thing. It really is. There's a judges meeting
- 9:39at in the morning and we go over the rules and what to be expected
- 9:43and that sort of thing, and and each one does steps up and has
- 9:48a has a really particular taste. And that's what I mean. Somebody asked
- 9:52me one time, what to it take to be a judge? You gotta
- 9:54palette, Yeah, there you go. That's that's that's pretty much all you
- 9:58gotta do. And you got to drink water with the two because if you
- 10:00start mixing. And one of the first chili cookoffs that I judge, people
- 10:05said, why need the crackers, And no, no, no, that's
- 10:07not the way it works. You don't add everybody drinks the same thing,
- 10:09or about his water and that kind of thing. I want to talk about
- 10:13beer for a moment because this craft beer thing has really exploded nationwide and West
- 10:18Virginia is a big part of that as well. Uh and uh and and
- 10:20it it just kind of goes along with the whole ambiance of the day there,
- 10:24Joe having the having the craft beers there. Well, we got the
- 10:28big red tat truck from Saint Aubans will be uh on hand and uh you'll
- 10:35be able to walk up and uh and make a donation as it may be.
- 10:39But we've got big timbers from West Virginia will be one of the beers
- 10:43and uh and for the domestic lovers, we won't have domestic also, but
- 10:48we'll have some ciders, we'll have some I p as, we'll have some
- 10:52surs, uh, a variety of as. People have palates for for the
- 10:56chili that they'll be tasting. They also have the palettes or the craft beers
- 11:01that will be tasting, so we'll have that and it's just going it's just
- 11:05a fun time. It's a fellowship kind of thing. And by the way,
- 11:09the four legged friends, your four legged friends are welcome to attend and
- 11:15have some fun also. Absolutely and again that's go over the charitable aspect of
- 11:18it again, just so everybody make sure the data where the proceeds go.
- 11:22Well, the first off, we an annual thing, and where the wagging
- 11:26tails comes from is that we have Eddie Bitty Kitty Canine Rescue in the Charleston
- 11:33Humane Society will be here and we will be raising money for them. And
- 11:37then from the and that's from all the various things that we'll be doing,
- 11:41but also the beards, I mean the chili tasting side of things. Hospice
- 11:46gets all the proceeds, all of the proceeds one percent of all the tickets
- 11:52for sampling that will be sold. So when you step up and you come
- 11:56out and you're having a good time, you have some feel good about it
- 12:00also and you can get ready for a big Wbu win later that evening and
- 12:03also a Marshall win as well. Let's go and through that. Yeah,
- 12:07of course these are two teams. Well there's several teams, but but I
- 12:11mean Marshall's got apple Atch and say and that's an old rival of ours,
- 12:13so you know, take it on the mountings of the other mountains of apple
- 12:18Atch and say Joe, where can people learn more about it. I've got
- 12:20some things posted on my social media, but where can people learn more about
- 12:22it from? You? Wagging Tails and nitro ales on the Facebook? You
- 12:28can go there and and David, I just want to you know, we
- 12:31talk about WBU and Marshall and they won't be playing and everything, but the
- 12:35University of Charleston cross country team, the boys, the men and women's cross
- 12:41country teams will be racing in the regionals. The men's cross country team won
- 12:46for the sixth straight year of the Mountain East Conference and the women won for
- 12:50the fourth straight year. Now they're representing West Virginia in the regionals this weekend.
- 12:54So those Harriers, we wish them well. Also, all right,
- 12:58Joe, well I'll see you Saturday, my friend. Looking forward to it
- 13:01quickly thirty seconds when you think about the World Series, because I know you're
- 13:05a big baseball guy. You know, Texas beat my o's and they beat
- 13:09up on us pretty well, and everybody was worried about that one picture.
- 13:13Heiny, I guess it is and he's the one. Yeah, it was
- 13:16a It's baseball, man, It's World Series. Enjoy it and understand that
- 13:22in just around one hundred days, pictures and catchers will be reporting. I'm
- 13:24glad that a new team won the World Series. They can they got bragging
- 13:28right now. Well, and mister Abochi, they're the manager. I mean
- 13:31he made history last night, you know, as did the Rangers, first
- 13:35time they've ever won the World Series. All right, Joe, I will
- 13:37see you Saturday. We'll talk soon. Man, Thanks a lot, Thank
- 13:41you, David, and you have a self safe one, all right,

- 17:07that twice that guy said itty bitty blank on the radio. It's itty bitty
- 17:14kitty committee. That's what he said. Is that some sort of new breask
- 17:17No, it's itty bitty kitty committee. All right, kitty with it?
- 17:22Okay? Nine twenty four. Ryan Weld is with us right now. You
- 17:26gotta follow that up. It got nothing, I got nothing, got nothing.
- 17:33State Senator and Canada Attorney General Ryan Weld House campaign going man, good
- 17:37busy. You know, I get a full schedule down here in Charleston Today.
- 17:41I got a couple of meetings. Heading to Greenboro County later today.
- 17:45Tomorrow, we're going to be in Parkersburg. Uh Saturday, We've got a
- 17:49parade, gonna be at the the game in Morgantown Military Appreciation Games. I'm
- 17:53gonna head down there. A lot of traveling, a lot of traveling.
- 17:59You know. One of the things that I that I've learned in my time
- 18:03around politics and is that you don't you know what West Virginia is a and
- 18:07you traveled all over the world with your military background. But West Virginia is
- 18:11a small state, but it's also seems so large because it's so different.
- 18:15You know, when Berkeley County could not be any more different than McDowell County
- 18:19and Mond County could not be any more different than Mason County. It's just
- 18:22it is a by that sense of the definition, Ryan, it is a
- 18:26diverse state. It's very different. There are also not a whole lot of
- 18:30state straight roads here in West Virginia. So every time my wife says,
- 18:33well, okay, we're going there, how long does it take two and
- 18:36a half an see to get there? Two and a half hours an see
- 18:40to get there, two and a half hours from the northern Panando. Everything
- 18:42is a minimum of two and a half hours, it is. Indeed,
- 18:45how are the how has it been so far? And your your numbers are
- 18:49looking good as far as your the money race, that's always important. Things
- 18:53are going well. You know, I think people appreciate a good ground game,
- 18:57and you know, we make it a point that if there's a parade,
- 19:00a fair, festival, we're going to be there and talk with people.
- 19:03And you know, because we're from my wife and I'm from one part
- 19:07of the state at the Northern Pananal and so, as you just said,
- 19:11we're a bunch of different states wrapped into one and so states, cultures and
- 19:14whatnot. I love getting out and hearing from other people and other parts of
- 19:18the state. What are their concerns, but also what are their hopes for
- 19:22their future of their neck of the woods, because it's going to be different
- 19:26from the Northern Panana. It's going to be different from the Eastern Panano,
- 19:27I mean Eastern Panel. Right now, they're almost a mass capacity in some
- 19:33of those areas, where in the Northern Panel we got a lot of rooms
- 19:36spare, and so their concerns out there are different from ours in the Northern
- 19:40Paninal saying from the southern part of the state. And so I just love
- 19:42getting out and talking with folks. It's a three person race on the Republican
- 19:48side between yourself, another state Senator Mike Stewart, and current state Auditor JB.
- 19:52Mccusky. What makes Ryan Weld the best fit for the job? My
- 19:55experience and it goes you know, you mentioned that I was in the military,
- 20:00and so I was in the Air Force Reservists, but spent you know,
- 20:03I think suck just about six years straight on active duty. You know,
- 20:07the leadership that I learned there that I'm bringing to the position that I
- 20:11brought to my time in the legislature, but my record in the legislature as
- 20:15well of getting things done, of accomplishing things that I told the people in
- 20:18my district I was going to go to Charleston and work on. There is
- 20:23one particular reason, large reason of why I'm running for Attorney General. You
- 20:29know, Attorney General Patrick Morrison went out and got a massive settlement against the
- 20:32opioid manufacturers that have done an uncalculable amount of damage to our state. And
- 20:40most of that money, about eight hundred fifty million of it, went to
- 20:41the West Virginia First Foundation, and that foundation is charged with spending that money
- 20:47in order to repair the damage that's been done to us and prevent it from
- 20:49ever happening again in the future. And that money has to be spent on
- 20:52prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, education, law enforcement purposes. The Attorney General
- 21:00is going to have the authority to conduct audits of that foundation, but also
- 21:03to conduct performance reviews of that foundation. No other candidate in this race has
- 21:11any experience working in those fields. Like I do. You know, I
- 21:14got to the legislature and I knew it was going to work on on veterans
- 21:17issues. I'm a veteran. Chair of the Military committee. Made sense for
- 21:19me. But as I got into that, really started to dig into substance
- 21:23abuse and mental health because you realize just how much that is tied to veterans
- 21:27issues. And it led me down that path working in those areas. And
- 21:32so this foundation and the money that eight hundred and fifty million dollars, I
- 21:34think represents this state's best and last opportunity to fix what's been done to us
- 21:41and stop it from ever happening again. And by having the experience that I
- 21:45have, can help ensure that we make the most of that opportunity. Talking
- 21:49again with state Senator and candidate for Attorney General Ryan Weld, I had one
- 21:53of the other of the other opponents of yours on the show the other day,
- 21:59State Senator Mike Stewart. He was on the show Monday. He called
- 22:02it a two man race now between himself and JB. Mccusky, who's currently
- 22:06serving as a state otnor. He stayed auditor. Uh, he completely left
- 22:10Ryan Weld out of the equation. Well, I would agree with him.
- 22:12I think it is a two man race. But the bad news for him
- 22:15is that he's not one of those people. You know. Fundraising last quarter
- 22:22was very fortunate, outraised my opponent, one of my opponents by five to
- 22:27one margin, the one you were just talking about this past quarter by a
- 22:32little over a two to one margin. And so moving forward, who has
- 22:36the ability to get their message out, who has the ability to connect with
- 22:41the voters on a much broader scale than you know, the all the fairs
- 22:45and festivals and parades that we all go to. And that's two people that
- 22:48are in this race. And so I mean, I think that's part of
- 22:52the equation. And then the other part is what we're talking about here,
- 22:57a record of getting things done, being able to lead the office, doing
- 23:02work in these fields that we would have to tackle and take on as attorney
- 23:06general, the experience in the courtroom, being a litigator, because you can
- 23:10take the position and say, well, I'm a lawyer too. I don't
- 23:12have to be a litigator or have coreum experience because we have staffords. We
- 23:15have staff attorneys to handle that. Well. The state doesn't hire or the
- 23:21state doesn't elect bureaucrats. The state elects you, the buck stops somewhere,
- 23:26and it stops with the person that they elected to make those decisions, not
- 23:30just farming out to bureaucrats and say it'll get done that way. If if
- 23:34you are lucky enough to be elected senator, what do you hope to do
- 23:40in the office? So two things, I think, first and foremost,
- 23:44being able to defend the rights and interests of one point eight million West Virginians
- 23:49and the industries that employ them is first and foremost a priority for that position.
- 23:56But second, as I was saying, really being able to ensure that
- 24:00we don't waste the opportunity that we have with the West Virginia First Foundation and
- 24:06ensuring that this state gets serious about tackling art substance abuse issues, mental health
- 24:11issues. I think that is the other priority for the position. How do
- 24:15we do that? How do we tackle these things? So I don't expect
- 24:19to have all the answers, but what kind of a game plan we have?
- 24:23So first and foremost on the first side of that, you have to
- 24:26be smart about what cases you get the state involved in and how you go
- 24:30about that. What's the priority for the state you got to be able to
- 24:34go through that sort of decision making because the future, I think of West
- 24:40Virginia and a lot of states that are like us, are going to be
- 24:42decided in the courtroom, in the feral courtroom. On the other side of
- 24:47that, on the substance abuse issue, you got to make sure that you
- 24:53again maximize that opportunity because you look around the state and the issues that we
- 24:59have, the foster care issues. How are we ensuring that children now who
- 25:03are in school know the dangers of drug addiction so they don't fall into that
- 25:07same path that unfortunately many of their parents have. How do we ensure that
- 25:11we have proper rehabilitation and treatment resources here in the state. And that again
- 25:17all goes back to that opioid settlement and spending those dollars. Wisely, I
- 25:22think that talking and getting that message out to young people. Obviously over the
- 25:27years, Ryan, we haven't done something right because I'm older than you,
- 25:32and I came from the just Say No generation, and we had the DARE
- 25:34programs and everything in the school in the eighties when I was in high school,
- 25:37in junior high and high school, and obviously that didn't work. So
- 25:42we might want to look at another plan. Well, I think that so
- 25:48part of that I think falls into that a lot of people who have addiction
- 25:52issues now kind of fell into that area when doctors were being told by manufacturers
- 26:00they weren't necessarily going out just to have fun and get high. There you're
- 26:03that that's a very good point in their part. And it became obviously that
- 26:07the disaster that it turned into for this state because for years we were no,
- 26:11it's not addictive, it's not addictive, don't worry about it. Keep
- 26:15prescribing it for everyone, right, But it was Yeah, and sadly we're
- 26:18learning it. Then then you take that away and people are going to turn
- 26:22to something else, because they're not just going to magically say is that.
- 26:23You know, the pill crisis was primarily of the you know, the two
- 26:27thousands and mid two thousands or whatever, and they're not just magically going to
- 26:32say, Okay, well the pills are gone, I'm gonna rink cool right
- 26:33now. That's not the way it works. They're going to go find something
- 26:37else. I want to ask you about this and bear with me on this.
- 26:41You have been linked for your support, sponsorship, whatever you want to
- 26:45call it, with the transfer bill. Uh, in high school sports.
- 26:49It's been controversial. There have been people on this show and other media outlets
- 26:53that have spoken out. Again said, there have been many that have spoken
- 26:56and said that they're for it, that they like it. If you want
- 27:02to say something on the record about that, yeah, sure. So the
- 27:03other day, the SSAC put out a number of three hundred and forty two
- 27:07athletic transfers. Whatever an athletic transfer is, I have no idea because that's
- 27:11not a term that anybody has ever like, do they have proof that all
- 27:14those were for athletic reasons. It's just a phrase that they all of a
- 27:17sudden used. That's three hundred and forty two. They said, Man,
- 27:21we only had one hundred and forty hardship transfers in the year and a half
- 27:23prior to that. To look at that jump, well, it's Apple's to
- 27:26bowling balls. That three hundred and forty two to one hundred and forty.
- 27:30That three hundred and forty two number also includes bonafide moves. So if you
- 27:36lived in Brook County and your parents took a job in Canalla County and you
- 27:40moved, so all of that's included in that three forty two and Also,
- 27:45ninth grade transfers were included in that three hundred and forty two, so they're
- 27:49including a number of categories into that number. That one hundred and forty doesn't
- 27:56include bonafide transfers and ninth grade transfers, so they're not giving a full picture.
- 28:04They're they're they're inflating a number on one side, but not telling the
- 28:07full picture on another side. I mean, we can all just cherry pick
- 28:12numbers to continue on with the narrative that we want to promote. But that's
- 28:18the disappointing thing is that they're not being fully forthright with the numbers that they're
- 28:25putting out there. I mean, how can one them make an informed decision
- 28:30when we don't have all the facts? And that's one of the things I
- 28:33think that some people have said, is just you know, give it time
- 28:37because we're basing this on. And I don't know how I feel about it.
- 28:41I'm kind of middle of the road on the whole thing. But but
- 28:45but I've had I've heard people say, well, we're basing this on seven
- 28:48eight weeks into a football season from some schools in the area in the Kanaal
- 28:52Valley, And I won't call them out. But you know, the ones
- 28:53I'm talking about that have been down for several years, you know, and
- 28:56so maybe we need to give it time. I've been told by the legislature,
- 29:00and you know, you're still a member of the legislature and you'll be
- 29:03in session come January, that it's probably not going to go anywhere. I
- 29:07mean, as far as the people that say that they want it, you
- 29:10know, retooled or done away with that, it's probably not going to go
- 29:12anywhere. I wouldn't expect the legislature to be all that excited about taking choice
- 29:18away from parents and deciding where their children go to school and removing the government
- 29:25interference out of that decision. You know, it's a very small area of
- 29:33the state where this is an issue. It's not an issue in my neck
- 29:37of the woods. Talking with coaches all across the state. You know,
- 29:41my stepfather was a high school football coach for over forty years, and so
- 29:45he knows coaches around the state that I've been able to talk to, and
- 29:48it's just it's not an issue, and we just don't have any facts.
- 29:52I mean, people say, well, this team they lost by a lot,
- 29:56Well, did the other team have a lot of transfers. I don't
- 30:00know, but I'm just guessing they did well. Well if they did,
- 30:03Like, we're all this touchdowns scored by those transfers, probably well. I
- 30:08mean, yeah, we're just lacking facts and all this. And also,
- 30:14you know, I've been involved in athletics for pretty much my entire life.
- 30:18I think you have. You might have a personnel issue in terms of if
- 30:22you're putting eighty points on the board or seventy points on the board, are
- 30:26you I mean, is that a conscious decision by the coach to do that?
- 30:33Yeah, I mean it all boils down to, you know, one
- 30:37of the particular schools. Again, I won't call them out in the area.
- 30:38I mean, they had their freshmen and they're playing against the seniors on
- 30:42the other team, and you can't I mean from a competitive standpoint, right,
- 30:47I don't think you can tell you you can't tell a ninth grader don't
- 30:48score against that senior, you know, I mean, I just I don't
- 30:52think that's realistic. I mean, I guess you can, but I don't
- 30:53know how far that's going to go. And you're trying to train those for
- 30:56other But I again, I understand both sides. Before I let you go.
- 31:00Somebody had a text about anything you wanted to say about about the Second
- 31:03Amendment. There have been some people that have that have I'll just threw my
- 31:08pen across the room. There have been some people of violence. There have
- 31:11been some people that have that have raised questions about your support at the Second
- 31:18Amendment. I didn't really understand that. Do you want to go into record?
- 31:19I think where are they pointing to that? I mean, I've always
- 31:22been a staunch advocate of that concealed carry or something like that. I've supported
- 31:27every piece of legislation on concealed carry, on constitutional carry. You know,
- 31:32I didn't support the campus carry bill a couple of years ago because it was
- 31:36tailor made for the two large universities in the state. I represent two very
- 31:40small schools. It would have been very detrimental to them. Made a couple
- 31:44of changes to that legislation of better help the smaller schools. Voted out a
- 31:48committee vote for it on the floor, not an issue. And so I'm
- 31:53pretty you know, as someone who has their life depended on carrying a firearm
- 31:59every day, I'm a pretty staunch advocate at the Second Amendment. Are you
- 32:02looking forward? And I don't know if there's any schedule maybe, you know,
- 32:05And I don't to any any sort of on stage debates or forums or
- 32:10anything like that with the other two candidates, or I haven't heard anything anything
- 32:14like that, you know, I haven't heard of it, of anybody trying
- 32:16to put something together. Obviously, I'd be open to that, to be
- 32:21able to set my record, you know, and contrast it to the record
- 32:27of my opponents and my leadership in contrast to my opponents, and so I
- 32:31would welcome the opportunity. But nothing has been discovered stil early. I mean
- 32:35it probably will happen. I mean it has in the past. I'd say
- 32:37probably will sometime in the new year. Give me thirty seconds on why people
- 32:40have should vote for Ryan welb Well thirty seconds because again of my record in
- 32:45the legislature, of my record of being a leader. You know, when
- 32:47I have said that I'm going to get something done, I have gotten it
- 32:51done. I have been a leader from my district. I've been a leader
- 32:53in the state Senate for the past eight years, and I've went I've done
- 32:59work and got and worked on on the issues. Didn't matter to West Virginia's
- 33:01whether it be substance abuse, whether it be in the criminal law. I've
- 33:07taken up a lot of these topics, veterans issues, and I've moved the
- 33:09flag and made important steps to improve West Virginia. Where can people learn more

- 36:50do the Republican candidates have the same writer because they all give the same answers
- 36:53to the questions. Texays Ryan, Well, the same team shouldn't score as
- 36:58many points as they can. What is he some kind of liberal? I
- 37:00don't think that Ran would be considered to be a liberal. Tex says what
- 37:05job at the Air Force Reserves requires someone to carry a firearm as their job
- 37:08to protect their life? Did well get a go in on attack missions as
- 37:13an Air Force reservist? Don't I know he's served in the military. Next
- 37:16time Ryan is on, will fully explain his role in the military. And
- 37:21he's listening right now. I'm sure he'll protect me or something, but I
- 37:23will promise we'll get fully into that the next time that he's on the show.
- 37:30Texas, where was Patrick Morrissey in all this Department of Corrections to backle

- 37:38this office really dropped the ball on this one, according to a text.
- 37:43Now, I promised that this was going to be a food show, or
- 37:46at least two segments of it. Meghan cut up, the executive director for
- 37:50the Childhood Language Centers here to talk about Mac and Cheese. The Mac and
- 37:52Cheese cook Off Saturday eleven at Capital Markets benefit for the Childhood Language Center.
- 37:58Megan, good morning. What have I gotten myself into? They tell me
- 38:01I'm going to be a judge for this thing. Joe Stevens has got me
- 38:04to try to be a judge for Chili in the afternoon and Nitro. So
- 38:07I'm going to start my day Capitol Market with Mac and cheese. Could be
- 38:09fun in my house comes Saturday night and I'll leave it at that. Oh
- 38:13yes, sorry, sorry, Ruthan, So to talk about this big event
- 38:19house, the whole thing work over there? All right? Well, this
- 38:21is our ninth annual Mac and Cheese Cookoff. It was sort of the brain
- 38:24child of Matt Sutton, who was on our board at the time. Wait
- 38:27a minute, Matt Sutton and brainchild not buying it? Go ahead? Well
- 38:32yeah, he thought, what can we do in West Virginia that isn't really
- 38:36done? So nine years ago they came up with this idea and it has
- 38:40just exploded. We have thirty two teams participating or competing. I guess you
- 38:45could say, so you're going to have your hands full, or should I
- 38:46say you're belly full by the end of this most amount of teams we've ever
- 38:52had compete. How many teams do we have thirty two thirty two okay,
- 38:54yeah, and then all the proceeds go to the Childhood Language Center, So
- 39:00we do free speech therapy for kids in all of West Virginia. Really,
- 39:04we see about one hundred and forty kids a week. So our goal for
- 39:07this event is to raise enough money to provide sixteen children with free speech therapy
- 39:13for a year. So I've been asked to be a judge. I know
- 39:16my buddy Stephen Keith there of the Food Gap and ex that mail is going
- 39:20to be judging Tony the Taylor. So obviously you don't have any standards,
- 39:24and you're judging Steve Bishop from our sister station of E one hundred, and
- 39:28he takes it very seriously. Steve Bishop takes everything seriously. And Mackenzie Spencer
- 39:32a festival. I posted something about it, so I actually talked to McKenzie
- 39:37last night. So check this out and get my buddy Steve at East Coast
- 39:40T's. Mackenzie and I talked about this. We are going to have t
- 39:44shirts for me and her that say mac and cheese. Oh that's cute,
- 39:49that's cute, may be and the cheese Yes, see what I guess very
- 39:52cute. Oh I should have thought of that, to sell shirts like that,
- 39:54I'd be cute with our pictures on them. Yeah, with proceeds benefiting
- 39:58me. Now we'll give it all back. We'll work on that for next
- 40:02year. So at the public shows up at Capital Market, how does it
- 40:06work for them? Sure? So you can buy your tickets now online.
- 40:09We have a Facebook event page. You can look that up. I think
- 40:12it's the CLC's Mac and Cheese cookoff and there's a link on there through event
- 40:16bright where you can buy your tickets. We've sold already about one hundred.
- 40:21I will be honest. The door's open at eleven. Get there early if
- 40:23you have not purchased your tickets, because they start lining up at ten thirty.
- 40:28We expect about two thousand people there. That's about the norm for the
- 40:31last four or five years. So you can buy them at the door.
- 40:36You can buy you can pre buy them. It's the same price. Ten
- 40:38dollars for adults, all you can eat, five dollars for kids, all
- 40:42you can eat. We will have waters available. That's the first year we're
- 40:45able to provide water. Usually people are asking us, oh my gosh,
- 40:49we're so thirsty. So if we have water and Dutch Miller super is actually
- 40:52providing that, and then we will have the beer available for purchase. And
- 40:55it's supposed to be a beautiful day, so mac and cheese and beer and
- 40:59just live music. It will be a lot of fun. Yeah, it
- 41:01sounds like it's gonna be a lot of fun. Again, Megan Cutlop is
- 41:04here in all the proceeds will benefit the childhood language. And how many kids
- 41:08do you serve for practical We see one hundred and forty only. And so
- 41:12when you say you see these kids, what exactly do you do for them?
- 41:15So we provide speech therapy. You know, we see kids with autism
- 41:19or apraxia or just a speech delay, all different, all different issues are
- 41:24going on. But we see them from there's some that come from Pocahontas County,
- 41:29from Boone County, from Logan Greenbrier. I mean they come from all
- 41:32over West Virginia. We also see them virtually, So if it's a long
- 41:37it's a long track to our office, we do see you virtually. So
- 41:39we've able to accommodate that was from COVID. Actually we were able to accommodate
- 41:45a lot more kids that way and it's once a week for thirty minutes and
- 41:50it's totally free and one of the great things I like about looking at the
- 41:53line. And by the way, I've got some information available on my social
- 41:57media. It's Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and also it's a Dave Allen on
- 42:00ax the artists forally known as Twitter. But you've got several different types of
- 42:05businesses that are entering this competition. I mean, it's not just restaurants.
- 42:08There are your restaurants there, but there are also a lot of organizations that
- 42:14are entering their mac and cheese. I had no idea there were that many
- 42:15different types of mac and cheese. I guess I'm about to find out.
- 42:19You are about to find out. We have, Like I said, we
- 42:22have thirty two this year. Usually our max is about twenty, but we
- 42:24run out of mac and cheese so early that we said, hey, we
- 42:27have to really amp this up. So my committee, which are community community
- 42:32members in our area, they really stepped it up. So we have the
- 42:35pitch this year. We have a church, New Horizons Church, a nonprofit
- 42:40Hope for All Capital Insurance group. He comes out every year with his famous
- 42:45recipe. So this my buddy Don Don Yeah, oh you'll hear him and
- 42:51you will see him. Well, don't. I don't really take Don Seierston
- 42:53because he's he's a Washington football fan and I'm a Cowboys fan. So now
- 42:58I really can I won't hold out against you. Okay, I can cut
- 43:00your mic anytime, just so you know that. But again, you have
- 43:04all these different organizations that are out there, and I know that the folks
- 43:07that that Regtta as does a stern will Regatta and Regatta, Progress Pro Wrestling,
- 43:12so pro wrestling and Mac and Cheese. I mean, is the people's
- 43:15elbow, mac and cheese? Okay, the people? Why don't I think
- 43:19Adam Harris has something to do with this? I don't know. I think
- 43:22it's not sudden. Okay, Matt, Okay, of course I had to
- 43:24be one of those guys. All right, we got to go. So
- 43:27I've got information again posted on my social media. Give us the more official
- 43:30sites where people can learn more about it. You can go to our Facebook
- 43:34page, Childhood Language Center, and you'll see our event. There you can
- 43:37learn you can stay updated on everyone who is participating, all of our sponsors,
- 43:42and you can buy your tickets from there and if not, do you
- 43:44just show up at the Capital Market eleven to two Saturday. I get there
- 43:47early, said, I say get there early because you can you have more
- 43:52of a chance to taste all this delicious mac and cheese. Yeah, it's
- 43:54going to be a great time. And again the weather's going to be absolutely
- 43:57great, and there's all all kinds of activities going on. This is one

- 46:55Forward details go back to the Ryan Weldon of you. Somebody said, is
- 46:59he really good to say a former US district attorney isn't in the race?
- 47:02Well, I think he was basing This was Ryan Weld referring to Mike Stewart.
- 47:06I think he was basing it on the money raised. And if you
- 47:08look at the money that's been raised so far. If I'm correct, and
- 47:10I don't have the figures in front of me, Stewart was in third and
- 47:15Weld and McCuskey had raised more money. But remember Mike Stewart on the show
- 47:19on Monday said that Ryan Weld wasn't in the race. So the only thing
- 47:21they can both agree on is that JB. McCuskey is in the race.
- 47:23That's not an endorsement of JB. McCuskey by these trates of the imagination.
- 47:27I'm just saying that one is saying that one of the other ones. What
- 47:30two are saying that one isn't end Does that make any sense at all?
- 47:34Got a phone call us? Go to the phone. Hi, you're on
- 47:37the show. Good morning, Good morning, good morning. What can we
- 47:39do for you? Yes, I'd like to remind everybody that there is a
- 47:44water rate hearing the PSC at five point thirty this season, and i'd like
- 47:47to get everybody to show up. Okay, Now, where is this located.
- 47:52It's on Broad Street. It's the PSC building. Okay, and I'm
- 47:55not aware of this to tell me, so tell me about the okay.
- 48:00Well, it's basically, the PSC is taking public comments on the water rate
- 48:07increase from West Virginia American Water and as most people know, West Virginia already
- 48:12has the house of water rates in the nation, and apparently that isn't enough
- 48:15for the water company and they're want more. So I think everybody's going to
- 48:20have to get involved, and we're just going to have to go down and
- 48:23let them know how we feel about it. I really don't know that the
- 48:28PSC is going to listen, because I don't think they've listened in the past.
- 48:31But until everybody gets together, I don't think they will. But I
- 48:35think if everybody gets behind it, I think we maybe have a chance to
- 48:38stop it. Okay, And again the meeting is where and when at five
- 48:43point thirty this evening at the PSC building on Brock Street. And this is
- 48:45like a public comment, like you said, like a public hearing, sir,
- 48:49right, right, correct, Okay, all right, well, I
- 48:52appreciate you letting everybody know about it, and thanks for calling the show.
- 48:54I appreciate it, all right, thanks a lot, did so. Four

- 49:25you. Lead story wv metronews dot com this morning by Brad. The Administration
- 49:30of Governor Justice has fired two people in connection with the mishandling of potential evidence
- 49:36in the class action lawsuit due to poor conditions at the Southern Regional Jail.
- 49:40Brad Douglas, who was the former Interim Corrections Commissioner and and also a recent
- 49:45executive in the jail system, along with the gentleman by the name of Phil
- 49:49Sword, who was the chief counsel for Homeland Security, has been terminated.
- 49:53That according to the Governor Chief of Staff, Brian Abraham. Now it's a
- 49:57lengthy story, and it's getting lengthier by the day. Just go check out
- 50:01brad'storywv metronews dot com. Unrelated but somewhat related. Two former corrections officers there
- 50:08at the Southern Regional Jail are doing court today for alleged abuse of some of
- 50:15the residents clientele, if you will, in jail, and we will be
- 50:19following that story closely. In the meantime, lots of people still trying to
- 50:25clean up, believe it or not, after the floods of August. The
- 50:29governor has submitted a request to the Biden administration and FEMA for individual assistance for
- 50:37the flooding that devastated areas of Kanawa County, but not just Kanawa also Clay
- 50:44County was hit hard, certain areas Boone County, Calhoun, and Harrison County,
- 50:47So it's kind of a wide swath of an area here, Jeff,
- 50:51as the story posted about a WV Metro news dot com, they are reviewing
- 50:54that the Biden administration is from one I understand, but now the governor has
- 50:58gotten involved submitting a request to the administration and FEMA for individual assistance for those
- 51:04that were affected by the flooding. A couple of quick programming notes. Hoppy
- 51:09is actually going live on location today at the Municipal League, and I got
- 51:15a chance to see the Rundown of all the mayors that he's got under.
- 51:16It's like think Mayor Monday that I do on steroids, because he's going to
- 51:21talk to a lot of different mayors from around the state of West Virginia to
- 51:23kind of get you know, it's kind of what I do on Monday,
- 51:27but it's much larger scale because what they're going to do is that Hoppy's going
- 51:30to learn. He's going to talk to these mayors about what they're doing right,
- 51:31what they're doing wrong, what they could do better. How As I
- 51:36said, the thing about West Virginia is and somebody ridiculed me when I said
- 51:38this on the air one time, but I said to West Virginia was a
- 51:42diverse state. What I mean by that is is that again, as I
- 51:45was talking to Ryan Weld about that earlier, areas of Wood County are nothing
- 51:50like areas of Monroe County, areas of Mingo County, nothing like areas of
- 51:53Ohio County. And so it's interesting when you get all of these folks together
- 52:00to talk about these things and they learn about what's as I said, what's
- 52:02right, what's wrong? What can we do different? Went on to the
- 52:05different cities. That's what Hobby is going to be doing now. I'm looking
- 52:07forward to listening to that. It's coming up at ten o six this morning.
- 52:10Again. I will not be here tomorrow. I've got some business commitment.
- 52:15Dale Cooper will be in as the guest host on the show tomorrow and
- 52:19his special guest host. The guest host of the guest host is going to
- 52:22be the always entertaining Love This guy, Cheff Paul Smith will be the judge
- 52:27on the Judge will be the I'm thinking about judge and Chili and MC and

- 52:35will be stopping by also. Hannah Gardener will be here tomorrow as well.
