Transcript
- 0:10Track and field world juvenile tuned in to our humble servant
- 0:14Mike Cunningham for another extraordinary message or Guild
- 0:18athletics. Connections.
- 0:23Here we go. You're not seeing things, but we
- 0:26are having a triple today. Today's guest.
- 0:29This is fun. You know, I'll tell you what,
- 0:31here's the kind of behind the curtains part of the podcast.
- 0:33You don't see, you know, I get to interview a lot of people.
- 0:36You know, we're getting close to season 6.
- 0:37We're getting close to 300 episodes.
- 0:40And you know, some guests that we have here, we just click on a
- 0:44personal level, you know, it's it's one thing business and and
- 0:46beloved for business. That's what keeps keeps us going
- 0:48here about a year and a half, almost getting closest to two
- 0:53years. Year and a half ago, another
- 0:56Gill podcast guest, Quinn Pack out in Colorado told me, hey,
- 0:59man, you've got to interview this guy at Bullet School named
- 1:03Joe Lee. And of course I already knew
- 1:05Bullet School, right, because of Quincy Wilson, right?
- 1:07I mean, if you don't know Quincy Wilson, what are you doing?
- 1:10Maybe in this sport, right? And honestly, I don't think I've
- 1:13ever told you this. Honestly, I was like, you know,
- 1:16that guy's going to big time me. Come on, he's dealing with this
- 1:19guy. This guy.
- 1:20I was like, but I'll see. And here's the crazy part.
- 1:23This was I was at the pen relays and Quinn gave me.
- 1:28So our guest today is Joe Lee. If you haven't read the whole
- 1:30thing right, read the description.
- 1:32So Quinn gives me Joe Lee's cell phone number, and I was like,
- 1:36all right, I'll contact him after the pen release.
- 1:37Now, I knew Joe was at Penn. If you've ever been to Penn to
- 1:40try to run into someone like, like not actually coordinated,
- 1:43it's impossible. Thousands and thousands and
- 1:45thousands of people. And I'm not kidding.
- 1:47Minutes after Quinn gave me Joe's cell phone, I walk by and
- 1:52I see a guy with a bullet school shirt and I go, hey, you're not
- 1:56Joe Lee, are you? You're like, hey, you're not
- 1:58Mike Cunningham, are you? And I was like wow, wow, wow,
- 2:02wow and. So that was.
- 2:04Fun. Yeah, that's right.
- 2:05Yeah, it was right at the bridge.
- 2:06Exactly right. And so we got it hooked up where
- 2:10we did, you know, our traditional podcast, we had Joe
- 2:13Julie on the podcast to talk about his journey.
- 2:15And whatever app you're listening to right now, if you
- 2:17just search Joe Lee guilt connections, you'll find that
- 2:20episode, that first episode that we had there, it was
- 2:23fascinating. It's it's my favorite.
- 2:24That's why I do this style of podcasting.
- 2:26I love learning about people's journeys, how they got into
- 2:28track, how they got into coaching, the mentors along the
- 2:31way, lessons learned. So we did that.
- 2:33And then Joe, you know, just kept having this amazing season
- 2:36with an amazing athlete. And they go to the Olympic
- 2:39trials and they do. I mean, I don't want to say the
- 2:43impossible, but man, it was really hard to make the Olympic
- 2:46team. And here's this, you know, just
- 2:48turned 16 year old who makes the Olympic team.
- 2:51And I thought, well, that's pretty cool.
- 2:53Why don't we talk to Joe and you know, he's a high school coach.
- 2:55It's one thing to talk and we we've had professional coaches
- 2:58on here and love them to death. But here's a high school coach
- 3:01navigating this. So we had Joe Lee back for
- 3:04record, the first time that's we've ever had a guest come back
- 3:06for the second time and we talked about.
- 3:09I was tired though, right we. Were a little tired.
- 3:11Yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 3:13We talked about the Olympic trials experience, what it was
- 3:15like to go through the rounds, what it was like to, you know,
- 3:18put your athlete up against, you know, these big Doc Quincy Hall
- 3:20and Norwood and all these guys. I mean, it's a battle.
- 3:23It's a battle, it's a battle. And So what do you do?
- 3:26And then he qualified. So we talked about on Episode 2
- 3:29about, well, what do you do now for practice, things like that,
- 3:32Like how are you navigating that?
- 3:33And now, you know, we're we're recording this in what is it's
- 3:37October. Well, he's done it.
- 3:39They went to Paris 2024 and they got a medal.
- 3:42That's pretty stick and cool. They got the extra expense.
- 3:44And I thought, you know what the making the Olympic team is this
- 3:48really, really small fraternity. Like no, it's special to have
- 3:54those rings tattooed. You know, the guys get a tattoo.
- 3:57It's the same for the coaches. I mean that it's made last week
- 4:01in on the podcast. We actually read out every
- 4:04athlete that meddled in the individual events for pairs 24.
- 4:08We read out their coaches name because I think that's special.
- 4:10That's a, a small fraternity as well.
- 4:12And so I thought, well, since I've become friends with Jolie,
- 4:14why don't we have them back here to talk about, well, how did it
- 4:17all go down? What was it like?
- 4:19What was it like to travel? What was it like to get
- 4:22credentialed? What was it like to prep the
- 4:23athlete? What was it like when they ran
- 4:26just the whole 9? Cuz you know, I, I hope this,
- 4:29that is wrong. 99% of us are never going to have an athlete
- 4:32in the Olympics. I hope that's wrong because I
- 4:34hope 100 a lot of us do. But I know for sure, me, I'm
- 4:37never going to have an athlete in the Olympics.
- 4:38And so I wanted to learn from him.
- 4:40So help me welcome for the third time, we've got a tree Peat.
- 4:43Is that what you'd call it? Help me welcome The wise, the
- 4:45wonderful Mr. Jolie. Joe.
- 4:47How are you my friend? Mike C Man, how you doing?
- 4:51See, you call me that because you're Joe Lee, Mike C That
- 4:53actually works. Actually, I like that.
- 4:55I like that. Maybe we'll have that ESPN show
- 4:57we talk about one day. We're going.
- 4:58To do it, man, we'll tell you there's something out there
- 5:01waiting for us, man, and it's going to be fantastic.
- 5:03That's right. That's right.
- 5:04Hey, man, You know, I've told you this privately.
- 5:07I always like to do things publicly as well.
- 5:09Congratulations, dude. You know, it is tough.
- 5:11This is, you know, we talk about how tough the US Olympic trials
- 5:15are for track and field. And you've got guys and gals
- 5:19that, you know, were NCAA national champions and, you
- 5:23know, five years into their professional career and they're
- 5:26still fighting to make that top three, to make that relay squad.
- 5:30And it doesn't have there's plenty of amazing athletes,
- 5:32plenty of amazing athletes, like people like worship, like, oh,
- 5:36that's my favorite athlete. And they didn't make an Olympic
- 5:38team that that's how tough it is.
- 5:40And here you are. I never like to belittle and say
- 5:43only, but here you are as a high school coach and you had that
- 5:47man. That's that's crazy, dude.
- 5:49That doesn't happen. That doesn't happen.
- 5:51No, I mean, again, you know, that's that's why they call it
- 5:54history, right? I mean, you know, somebody's got
- 5:56to, you know, make it and and create it and and, you know,
- 6:00break records and do things that have never been done that that's
- 6:02what makes the all sports fun. You know, you know, I was
- 6:06watching a football game the other night and just watching
- 6:09some things that had, you know, never happened this first time
- 6:11this happened. So it's kind of cool when that
- 6:13stuff happens, especially when you have a tradition of a sport
- 6:16like track and field that's been around for so long.
- 6:18And ours is one of the few sports that, you know, that the
- 6:21rules don't change a whole lot. Still 400 meters around the
- 6:24track, you know, there's still 10 hurdles and you know, the
- 6:29shot puts still weighs 16 lbs. So the, if you're, I mean, not
- 6:34in high school, so but you, you get what I'm saying.
- 6:35So, so yeah, it's fun, man. It's still, I don't know, it's
- 6:39kind of, it's still kind of surreal because I, I have to
- 6:42give you, this is a breaking NEWS UPDATE now.
- 6:45So you're the first one to get this.
- 6:46So he's no longer Quincy Wilson? OK.
- 6:51He's he's now Coach Quincy. And let me tell you why.
- 6:55Let me tell you how so do these things that are our school every
- 6:58year, because our school's very community based.
- 7:00It's not a huge school. We have like 600 kids in the
- 7:02whole high school, right? So 630 or something like that.
- 7:06And so we do it's homecoming weekend this weekend.
- 7:09So we do something that the the Thursday before the homecoming,
- 7:14the day before the homecoming game, we do something called
- 7:16Olympics, right? Like.
- 7:19Freshman, sophomore, junior, senior.
- 7:21So. So he's now a big time junior.
- 7:23Now he's only an upperclassman. It's still is laughable that
- 7:27this little joker has got an Olympic gold medal as an
- 7:30underclassman in freaking high school.
- 7:33It's hilarious still. Doesn't have his driver's
- 7:35license right? No, he doesn't have his driver's
- 7:37license. Like Coach, I might need to miss
- 7:39practice because I got the driver's head.
- 7:41I'm like, you know what this is like not happening to me, Some
- 7:43type of reality TV show. But it's funny, it is really
- 7:47funny. So no, he doesn't have his
- 7:48license. He's still not shaving.
- 7:51He's he's and he's he's he's a phenomenal kid.
- 7:56So, so yeah, so we have the Olympics, right?
- 7:58So the freshman software junior senior.
- 8:00So they have like a non track 4 by 1, just like kids on the in
- 8:05in the community who never ran, and they just want to do a four
- 8:07by one. It's fun.
- 8:08And they have a track four by one that they created because
- 8:11they want to see like every year.
- 8:12It's like, hey, which bullets track kid can we put on our team
- 8:16to win? And you know, eventually, like I
- 8:18said, let's just let's split up the squad.
- 8:20So we have some pretty good depth this year on our team and
- 8:24there's a lot of balance. So our senior class, I
- 8:27personally believe, and obviously I'm biased, but I
- 8:29believe they could be if they do what they are capable of doing,
- 8:32this could be like one of the best runs ever in in high school
- 8:36sports. Way to put pressure on yourself.
- 8:39Jolie. That really got, I mean, you got
- 8:41Cindy Sutton, who's, you know, she's one of the top recruits in
- 8:45the country. Morgan Rothwell, you know,
- 8:48Peyton Payne, Gabriel, we just got a ton of them, right.
- 8:51So the seniors are loaded, right?
- 8:54And I just named not even half of them.
- 8:56They're going to get mad because I didn't name them.
- 8:57They're all they're all phenomenal.
- 8:59The junior class is, is they're they're loaded too.
- 9:02And here's how it works. It's 2 girls and two boys on the
- 9:05same route. So it's a mixed 4 by 1, right?
- 9:08So the junior class is not as loaded depth wise, but you know,
- 9:13they've Got Talent. But you only need.
- 9:15Four. Absolutely.
- 9:16Right. So we've got, yeah, you only
- 9:17need 4. Exactly.
- 9:18So one of our our hurdlers who plays football, he jumped on
- 9:23with Quincy. And then we have Cassidy
- 9:27Hopkins, who's one of the top hurdlers in the country.
- 9:30And then we have a transfer came in Alexis Brown, who she's
- 9:33phenomenal. She's a she's about 11, five
- 9:36kids. So so they're playing this thing
- 9:39together, right. And don't count on the
- 9:41sophomores. The sophomores are loaded.
- 9:43I mean, it's it's it's it's phenomenal.
- 9:45And the freshman we got great freshman too.
- 9:46So anyway, so I'm at the track yesterday and he's like in like
- 9:52they're in like game mode. I'm like these guys are focused,
- 9:56they're locked in. I'm like, what the heck is this?
- 9:59They're like, no, we're winning, we're winning.
- 10:01I mean, they're going through their passes and everything.
- 10:04You have like a a crowd of them. And if they're they would miss
- 10:07the pass and go oh, not enough, no, not enough.
- 10:09It's going. It was crazy, right?
- 10:11So all this build up and you know, I'm like, OK, well, do you
- 10:15need help with your lineup? I'm talking to Quincy now.
- 10:17No, no, no, I got this, I got this because you're going for
- 10:19the seniors. Look, I'm not going for anybody.
- 10:21Like he's like, no, you're going for the seniors.
- 10:24They told me I was like, I'm not going for all of y'all.
- 10:26So anyway, so he's I got the order and I I mixed it, I
- 10:29switched it and he, he put the order together and he, he, he
- 10:34was so excited. He finally did come to me as a
- 10:35head coach. Can you help me out with these
- 10:37steps right now? Like, oh, now you want some
- 10:40help? Anyway, so Long story short,
- 10:42he's Coach Quincy. Now, his team, there's some
- 10:44controversy, or you may hear about it on the ESPN.
- 10:48He just did win, but they knocked the baton out of the
- 10:53second runner's hand. Alexis Brian knocked allegedly.
- 10:56I'm so let me say allegedly, yeah.
- 10:59Yeah, yeah. I always have to say allegedly.
- 11:01Allegedly. So I'm saying allegedly,
- 11:02allegedly, who was that? Alex Lambert, who is the runner
- 11:08who fell at Penn Relays for us last year.
- 11:11He dropped the baton, allegedly. He knocked the baton out of
- 11:14Alexis Brown's hand. And so the juniors wound up
- 11:17taking an L and the seniors won. But there, there's there's a
- 11:21heavy protesting session. I think it's gone all the way up
- 11:25to the world ranks and we'll see what happens.
- 11:28But he's coach Quincy now. You know what I love about that
- 11:31story more than anything I worry about, I think it's fair to call
- 11:35him a prodigy, right? I worry about kids, not even
- 11:38prodigies, but that who excel in something and adults push them
- 11:43towards, you know, achieving higher and higher.
- 11:45And at a young age, they, they do phenomenal things.
- 11:47And then they, they get into the adult world like they, they
- 11:50start like, oh, well, it's all serious now and it's about money
- 11:53or whatever, yada, yada, yada. And they lose at a very
- 11:55precocious age, childhood. They lose just to be a child.
- 11:59And so I love that this dude was like, you know, in front of, I
- 12:02don't know what the stadium held, but 6080, 1000 people in
- 12:05Paris and then the next day he's helping to win the the Bull
- 12:09Olympics 4 by 1. You know what I'm saying?
- 12:11Like that's like, that's cool. Like I'd rather hear that than
- 12:14like, well, you know, he didn't want to run because, you know,
- 12:17he's got his next season coming up and he just came off of long
- 12:19seasons. He didn't run in his schools 4
- 12:21by 1. It's like, oh man, that's kind
- 12:22of sucks. That's cool.
- 12:23Like I love that man. That's like, honestly, good for
- 12:25him and good for his support system around him.
- 12:27They obviously have a you guys obviously have a good like
- 12:32relationship to like what real world is.
- 12:33At the end of the day, you're a 16 year old kid.
- 12:35You've done some amazing things. No taking away that, but you're
- 12:38a kid. Let's have some fun bro.
- 12:39There's going to be enough serious stuff coming up one day.
- 12:41So I love that that's so cool. I.
- 12:43Mean that's it's still sport, right.
- 12:45So again, as seriously as serious as we try and take
- 12:48athletics and we all do, I mean, we're in, we're locked in.
- 12:51And I know there's, you know, on the professional level and for
- 12:54multiple sports, it's a billion dollar business.
- 12:56I get it. But it's still sport.
- 12:58It's still fun. It's still supposed to be, for
- 13:01lack of a better word, something that we do to take our mind off
- 13:04of our real life problems, you know, so, but you just remind me
- 13:09now, now, now I'm nervous because I got to go to practice
- 13:11it. I just realized that he's an
- 13:13Olympic gold medalist, but he is a non medalist at the Olympics
- 13:18so. I'm sure they're.
- 13:20Going to hold that over his head.
- 13:21I'm trying. I knew there was something
- 13:23missing from his resume already. There it is.
- 13:25They didn't even come in 3rd. The freshman beat them.
- 13:27The freshman beat the juniors. They're rerunning this thing,
- 13:31obviously. Right, there's talk we're
- 13:33they're talking about rerunning it There's.
- 13:35The talk, it's happening for sure.
- 13:36I think it's going to happen and the exciting part is there.
- 13:39He was on anchor and he was ready to go.
- 13:41That's funny. He was ready to go.
- 13:43But. This is kind of an off topic
- 13:45question because I started thinking of myself as a 16 year
- 13:48old winning a gold medal at the freaking Olympics.
- 13:50Does that dude just walk around all day with the Olympics around
- 13:52the medal around his neck? Absolutely not bro.
- 13:56I would walk everywhere. Hey, you, me both.
- 14:01English class. I mean, you wouldn't be able to
- 14:03tell me nothing like, hey Mike, you're a math assignments dude.
- 14:07Where is it at? I'd be like, but have you seen
- 14:08this? I mean, what do I need?
- 14:10Math. I mean, I'd be the Flavor Flav
- 14:13of 16 year olds with the gold medal bro.
- 14:16No, I mean like, no doubts dude. That, that'd be my hall pass,
- 14:20yeah. Yeah.
- 14:22Do you have a pass? Yes, I do, dude, listen.
- 14:28But no, I mean, he's so humble about it and you know, he's.
- 14:31I want to see a picture of him taking out the trash at home
- 14:33because, you know, mom and stuff are still like, you still get to
- 14:36joy. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:37Oh, did you see that? That that whole viral moment
- 14:39that went on with social media, like, you know, where it's
- 14:42saying things like, yeah, you have that gold medal, but you
- 14:44better take out this trash. I seen.
- 14:47That yeah, that was hilarious. It was a whole bit on like what
- 14:50mothers would say to, to, to 16 year old gold medal people.
- 14:54Humble. And his mother is all that.
- 14:56Trust me, she doesn't buy into any of that.
- 15:00It's so funny because she's so I mean, he's such a great mom and
- 15:04his dad's such a great dad to keep them well grounded.
- 15:07But no, she doesn't. She's really look, all this can
- 15:10be over real quick. You better get yourself
- 15:13together, right? It is hilarious.
- 15:15So so they are that, but no, he's humble.
- 15:18And the first day of school they they because again, we have
- 15:22we're K through 12, right? So some of the younger kids are
- 15:26just like, you know, awestruck, right?
- 15:29So, you know, I think he bought the medal because they asked him
- 15:31do not because he he would, you know, and they said, all right,
- 15:34let's get this out of the way, all right, so, so now that after
- 15:37this, after this day is over, let's back to normal.
- 15:39Let's allow Quincy to be normal, but also let's all be normal
- 15:43too, because, you know, we're here for all the same thing.
- 15:47So. So yeah, yeah, he's, he's he's
- 15:48handling it well. But no, he's, he's, he's a
- 15:50regular kid. Trust me.
- 15:51Yeah, I love that. Regular kid and he's
- 15:54experiencing a whole lot of a whole lot of irregular things.
- 15:58I guess I'll. Say good, good, good.
- 16:00Well, let's hop into it, man. When we first last talked, we
- 16:04had just gotten past the Olympic trials.
- 16:05We took questions from Twitter about like, what are you doing
- 16:08training wise with them? Of course we had to knock out at
- 16:11least. And you know, things can always
- 16:13change and I don't really want to get into it, to be honest
- 16:15with you. But we talked about, you know,
- 16:16is he going to go pros? Is he going to go to college?
- 16:17What's all that kind of stuff? We we address those kind of
- 16:20things. We do know that he's doing some
- 16:22college visits because we've seen some of the, you know, you
- 16:24can't escape all the pictures and stuff.
- 16:26Now that happened and so we've seen some college visits.
- 16:28So that's all good. Love all that kind of stuff.
- 16:31But we were prepping for the trip to Paris.
- 16:33So let's kind of pick up there and you know, we'll get into
- 16:37some weeds actually, cuz I'm really interested in some of the
- 16:39like just blocking and tackling logistics.
- 16:41And so I'm gonna, so I'm gonna thank you.
- 16:43So I'm appreciate, appreciate that.
- 16:44I'm gonna start there. So like what you get done with
- 16:48the trials, You've got Paris in what a month?
- 16:51I think after the trials I know he's going through as athlete.
- 16:54They go through a processing of, you know, for uniform size and I
- 16:59assume they start talking about, you know, travel logistics and
- 17:02all that kind of stuff. What about the the personal
- 17:04coach? Because you know, we do have a a
- 17:05USATF staff coaching staff as well, but we also all have our
- 17:08personal coaches. What do you what are you going
- 17:11into at this point? Are you credentialed?
- 17:14Are you do? Does a USATF travel agent called
- 17:20you to talk about your travel? Are you all completely separate
- 17:22on your own? What's what's it like as the
- 17:23coach while the athletes going through that side of things?
- 17:26Yeah, those are almost verbatim the same questions that I had as
- 17:30soon as all this stuff got started, right.
- 17:34So, and let me first say that the, the USATF staff, you know,
- 17:38the administrator folks and operations folks there, they're
- 17:42great. They're phenomenal.
- 17:44I mean, there's this great people and you, you think
- 17:46there's like this huge staff of hundreds of people.
- 17:48There's really not, there's not. And they were great.
- 17:52So at the trials, you know, when, when we realized he made
- 17:55the team, you know, we stayed behind a couple days.
- 17:57So obviously he got, you know, they, they credentialed him and,
- 18:01and, and just took all his information, got, you know,
- 18:03uniform sizes and just all that kind of stuff.
- 18:06So I stayed behind as well and just said, Hey, what is this all
- 18:09about? You know, this is nothing that
- 18:11we have planned for. This is the first time going
- 18:13about doing this and, you know, just, you know, what do you need
- 18:17to, what do you need us to do? So here's the thing.
- 18:20I didn't realize most of the coaches had already filled out
- 18:25all of their information. I'm like the one outlier here.
- 18:30Well, why I wasn't thinking about this like nine months
- 18:34prior to or even six months prior to.
- 18:36I mean, it was an outside shot, but it was like I was saying.
- 18:40No lock for sure. I mean, like it was like it
- 18:43wasn't 1234 or five top five on our list of things that we know
- 18:48we're going to that are going to happen.
- 18:50It's just, you know, we, we, we thought it might be an outside
- 18:54shot, but a lot of other things had to take place.
- 18:55So the professional coaches at, you know, rightfully so, they
- 18:59put their things in months in advance.
- 19:01I'm like, hey, I'm the 16 year old kids coach, you know, sorry
- 19:06to, you know, inconvenience everyone, but you know,
- 19:09especially me knew that we're going to be here.
- 19:11So what do I do? So they were super nice.
- 19:14They walked me back and said, Hey, coach, no problem.
- 19:16Took my information, had me fill out a whole lot of forms and the
- 19:21Olympics work very different than the World Championships do.
- 19:25And they they were very clear on that.
- 19:27Things are a lot tighter. There are less credentials that
- 19:30are available. And so we got a unique situation
- 19:34because I got a minor here on the team, right?
- 19:36Right. Yeah.
- 19:37So, so they were phenomenal. And again, it was a very family
- 19:42oriented feel. Those ladies who were a part of
- 19:45the the admin and operations support staff and they were just
- 19:48really great. So because they're, it's the
- 19:53Olympics, they give out less credentials.
- 19:54So we didn't even have enough, we meeting the Team USA side
- 19:59didn't even have enough credentials for coaches for
- 20:02people who made top three, believe it or not.
- 20:06So there's some coaches there who had an athlete as a as a
- 20:11competitor and they didn't get the credentials.
- 20:15It's two different kind of credentials.
- 20:16You can get the first credential.
- 20:19Is to the high performance training center where everybody
- 20:22trains and and and you eat meals and you know, gets, you know,
- 20:26everything gets ready. You know, all the medical people
- 20:28are there. So everybody had one of those
- 20:30and that because that's specifically Team USA is, you
- 20:34know, have access to what they're responsible for.
- 20:38But when he gets to the other side with the Olympic
- 20:41credentials, those are very sparse.
- 20:44So they had to go first to the athletes who they qualified in
- 20:49multiple events and you know, some of the veterans.
- 20:51So and after you got down to that, if you, if you're, if your
- 20:55athlete like me, made the relay, it was very doubtful if if you
- 21:01got one at all. And I did not get one of those
- 21:04credentials that would get me into the warm up area, which is
- 21:07OK, which is OK. Ironically, the warm up area was
- 21:10like, right, OK, So that how do I explain this?
- 21:14So the, the stadium is this kind of, you know, in the back and
- 21:18then there's this big like walkway or bridge like in the
- 21:22middle and then on the other side down one level low, it's
- 21:26the warm period. So I'm just being a high school
- 21:29coach making things work like like I have to.
- 21:33So I'm looking, I'm peering between because they had the
- 21:36they had like the not the partitions, but like I guess.
- 21:38Like exactly. Exactly that mesh exactly.
- 21:41So I'm like doing this. I'm like, hey, you know, come
- 21:46on, get, you know, get this going, get that going.
- 21:48And so that, that was fun. But at the same time, it was
- 21:53kind of, it wasn't the most convenient, but I understood why
- 21:56because, you know, there there's just not enough credentials to
- 22:00go around for, for that. And I was still fortunate to be
- 22:04able to be with him every day because really where I needed to
- 22:06be is at practice and training so we can spend time together
- 22:11doing what we need to do. So going over did you guys go?
- 22:16And I'm saying to you guys, you brought up a great point.
- 22:19I didn't even, I mean, obviously it's right in front of my face,
- 22:21but I didn't think about it. I'm usually think about two
- 22:24adults go, you know, 30 year old athlete and 40 year old coach.
- 22:28You did have a minor. I didn't think about that.
- 22:30Did you guys go over early? Like what was, how was the plan
- 22:34set as far as going early for time zones and things like that?
- 22:37Or did you go like the day before trials?
- 22:41Yeah, no. So good question.
- 22:42So I'm kind of, I don't know. Well, I can always speak for
- 22:46how, you know, we do things at Bullis.
- 22:48So I am a high school coach. I say that all the time.
- 22:51I also coach privately. And you know, I've worked with
- 22:54collegiate athletes. Kids come over in the summertime
- 22:57coach, they want to work on some mechanics and stuff like that.
- 23:00And you know, even now I have, you know, we have some some kids
- 23:03who are, you know, looking to start their professional career.
- 23:06So, you know, but it's all track and field to me, right?
- 23:09So the way we approach it is, is we want to prepare early and
- 23:15often, right? So we wanted to get over there
- 23:18as early as possible knowing that there's a huge time
- 23:22difference and also just some other differences.
- 23:26You just got to adapt to the culture, adapt to, you know,
- 23:29being somewhere you don't speak the same language, you know, how
- 23:31you getting around and you know the food and all those kind of
- 23:35things. So but they because he was a
- 23:39minor, they had to make sure that someone was traveling with
- 23:43him that is an adult and and everyone felt the best people to
- 23:48do that would be his parents. Like straight up ghostly is
- 23:52great. But look, I ain't mom and dad
- 23:54and we ain't traveling to a a different hemisphere.
- 23:57So mom and dad did that. I came on a separate flight
- 24:03maybe within 12 hours or so. We're like, you know, but I
- 24:08mean, that was still, you know, some other things I had to do
- 24:09work wise and, you know, just establish that.
- 24:12But they, his parents were the ones who took him over.
- 24:17And again, that's the way you know it, It should be.
- 24:21Now we all rolled back together or flew back together rather.
- 24:24We're all on the same flight. Myself, his parents, his sister,
- 24:29myself, you know that we we all did that back, but on the way
- 24:33down, they took him there and, you know, they were very
- 24:37collaborative. USATF was great and making sure
- 24:40that this, you know, high school young man, teenager is well
- 24:46taken care of at all times because there are places where
- 24:49his parents couldn't be. And then we had to make sure
- 24:51that, you know, everything was OK and, and, and they did a
- 24:54phenomenon. Again, I can't shout them out
- 24:56enough. Great job they did.
- 24:58Yeah, that's a that's just an extra layer.
- 25:01I didn't even think about that side of it, but yeah, you are.
- 25:03You know, it's OK to call him a kid.
- 25:04He's a high school kid from hearing out loud, no matter how
- 25:07phenomenal he is athletically. So yeah, I'm trying to think
- 25:10like, you know, my kid is going to turn 14 and two months, so
- 25:13two years younger than Quincy. And I'm like, Oh my God, yeah,
- 25:16we're going to Paris for whatever.
- 25:17It doesn't matter. Yeah, I'm going with, we're
- 25:19going with like, that's my kid, man.
- 25:21Like I don't care how awesome I love my coach or how trustworthy
- 25:23I am of whatever the organization is.
- 25:25I stopped my kid man, so. Yeah, that makes.
- 25:27A lot of sense. So how early did you guys get
- 25:30over there and did, were you over there early?
- 25:33Did you, did you ever get acclimated to the time so that
- 25:36you know, you have these natural circadian rhythms that you, you
- 25:39know, you're on the East Coast? Did you actually get adjusted to
- 25:42what morning and night was before we had to actually
- 25:45compete? Yeah, yeah, no, we got adjusted.
- 25:48So I think he got over there somewhere.
- 25:52It was before opening ceremonies.
- 25:54So oh gosh, I'm looking at my calendar now somewhere in that,
- 25:58you know, late Julyish time, time frame.
- 26:03And it it only took us a couple days because you just have to
- 26:06discipline your body to like, you know, stay up until this
- 26:09time. You know, you may want to go to
- 26:10sleep and then go to sleep. It only took us a couple days.
- 26:13It wasn't nearly as bad. Now, you know, well, I don't
- 26:17sleep a lot, so it wasn't bad for him.
- 26:19Me. I mean, it was, it was weird
- 26:22times where it's like 2:00 in the morning and I'm wide awake.
- 26:24Yeah, but he's very disciplined and, and, you know, we talked
- 26:29about his sleep regimen and, and when he's going to go to sleep
- 26:31and, you know, all down to, you know, what to do when you wake
- 26:34up. So in a couple days he was good
- 26:36to go. You know, he was good to go.
- 26:38And, you know, I think the biggest thing for him, again, it
- 26:43was a good thing, is the guys on the team treated him very well
- 26:48because he did stay in the in the Olympic Village, right?
- 26:51Yeah. So and the guys treated him
- 26:54really well. And I had guys come up to me
- 26:55even at the trials. And Coach, we're going to take
- 26:58care of him. Coach, I got you.
- 26:59Don't worry about it. We're going to treat him like,
- 27:00well, bro, Quincy Hall, Quincy Hall, Sundam and I, I mean that
- 27:07in a, in a very fun, but very competitive way on, on the PS5,
- 27:15they're, they're all, they are so competitive.
- 27:18These guys. In fact, one of the athletes
- 27:19said, listen, I we don't have any TV's in the Olympic Village,
- 27:24but because we have to play PlayStation, I'm going to buy
- 27:26one and just give it away to somebody when I leave because we
- 27:29got to play our play, right. So Quincy Hall and Quincy Wilson
- 27:34is not going to let me tell this story, but he beat him.
- 27:39Quincy's a gamer. I'm talking Mike.
- 27:41He's a gamer. He loved anything.
- 27:43Anything, you know, NBA2K college football was last big
- 27:47thing he was on. You name it, he's on.
- 27:50He does all that kind of stuff, like he's really into it and
- 27:52he's he rarely gets beat. Well, Quincy Hall beat him and
- 27:59was then then he starts texting me at like 3:00 in the morning.
- 28:02It's Quincy Hall. Like, you know, I'm like, why
- 28:04are you texting me? Try talking to me.
- 28:05I'm like, yes, I'm up and like this is it was bad.
- 28:09He was like, you better come get him.
- 28:11You should make some extra laps for this.
- 28:13Oh, it's beating them all. It was just he was killing him
- 28:17and he's killing me for it. I'm like, why are you doing
- 28:20this? So, but no, they had a lot of
- 28:22fun. And I said share that story
- 28:24because I mean, the guys really looked out for him.
- 28:27Most of the guys out there who, who knew him just kind of, you
- 28:30know, said, hey, if your parents not around, you know, you got
- 28:33big growth here and, and it was, I want to shout those guys out.
- 28:37Yeah, I'm glad you told that story because that leads me to
- 28:40literally my very next question. So you know, media, social
- 28:44media, and I don't say that bad. I know a lot of people started
- 28:46questioning going the media tells us this.
- 28:48The only way I know this stuff is when the media tells me
- 28:50right. So on the on Twitter, you know,
- 28:55I see like Norwood and Hall are doing exactly what you said, you
- 28:58know, like, I hate to say take him under his wing, you know,
- 29:01things like that. This is your first time too.
- 29:03Did you have any coaches that reached out to you?
- 29:06I was like, hey man, if you have questions and frustration, you
- 29:10know, the same things that, you know, 16 year old Quincy would
- 29:12want to talk to 30 year old Quincy Hall.
- 29:15Did you have any coaches that you kind of like were relying on
- 29:18to help you navigate this a little bit?
- 29:21You know, so I knew a lot of those guys anyway and just
- 29:25interaction with them over the years and coaching.
- 29:28So it wasn't so much that. So here's the thing, right when
- 29:33you get over there, when I got over there, I just I should say
- 29:37it was almost like a a subculture within a culture.
- 29:42All right. So when I got there, some of the
- 29:46coaches I didn't know, you know, they weren't really talking of a
- 29:49communicative. It's more so, hey, you know,
- 29:50keep moving, you know, but after you're there for a couple days,
- 29:53people kind of let their guards down and and before you know it
- 29:56by like within a week, everybody's like best friends
- 30:00almost. It's crazy because like we're
- 30:02all we got, you know, so you're in this different your foreign
- 30:05country and you know, everybody's on Team USA.
- 30:07So I mean, it was very like collaborative, closely
- 30:11connected. So it wasn't so much a a hey,
- 30:13coach, you know, let me know if you need something kind of
- 30:16thing, but it was more so like it, it's, it was, it was almost
- 30:20like a fraternity, so to speak. And like, Hey, you, you, you
- 30:23crossed the line. It was, it was, it was weird.
- 30:25It wasn't it, but it wasn't stated right.
- 30:27It was more, it was more experience and felt from people
- 30:31I didn't know. Now again, some of those coaches
- 30:33I've known for years and years, you know, from on the collegiate
- 30:37side and they're all good friends.
- 30:39They they would and help out. But the ones on the pro side who
- 30:43I didn't know, we want to develop in great relationships
- 30:46because again, we're all in for the same thing, whether we're
- 30:49competitors or not. Like we all want to see Team USA
- 30:51be successful. And I, I mean, again, I, I saw
- 30:54people who, who I I've seen and known about for years and and
- 30:59never had conversations with to where we're sitting out eating
- 31:01lunch because because you're, you're there all the time.
- 31:04I mean, and what people forget people like, how was Paris?
- 31:06How was Paris? Did you get to see?
- 31:08I knew a lot of sightseeing man track meet.
- 31:11No, I get it. Like it's a big track meet.
- 31:13It's a large track meet on the planet, but but it's still
- 31:15attract me for me. And but we got work to do.
- 31:17So there we have protocols in the morning.
- 31:20We got, you know, afternoon and he got working with the medical
- 31:23team and, you know, then he's got relay duties and I've got to
- 31:26do, you know, his specialized training.
- 31:29There's a lot of work to do. So yeah, it was, it was not AI
- 31:33didn't get that experience on the coach's side.
- 31:35But I definitely felt the love and built some good
- 31:39relationships with some people who, outside this experience, I
- 31:43probably wouldn't have. Yeah, I love that.
- 31:45Talk to us about practice a little bit more.
- 31:47You mentioned you didn't have a credential to get into practice,
- 31:50but you had your. I literally can see the picture
- 31:52of you pulling that windscreen back.
- 31:55Hey, what's the right now you got to do X&Y&Z?
- 31:58How much like are you? Maybe there's several questions
- 32:02of yours. How much are you practicing?
- 32:04Because you know, I hate to say the haze and the barn, but
- 32:06obviously we know track. There's still things that have
- 32:07to get done to prep you for the the race.
- 32:10There was a little bit of uncertainty, but we'll get into
- 32:11the actual competition side in your hair a little bit.
- 32:14But there was we we didn't know if we were going to run on the
- 32:19mix relay, the regular. And those are time spans
- 32:22between. So, yeah, there's, you know,
- 32:23there's a confusion to even. What am I prepping them for?
- 32:26Is it got to be ready tomorrow or is it going to be ready a
- 32:28week from now? Things like that.
- 32:30You have relay coaches and I do love one of my favorite quotes
- 32:33in track and field. This is from Mike Marsh, the
- 32:36men's relay team and article and track and field news way earlier
- 32:40this year. He said if you're the relay
- 32:43coach, you don't have to invite. I can't remember if he said
- 32:47criticism. I'm paraphrasing here.
- 32:50I'll say it this way. Is the relay coach for a team?
- 32:52You say you don't have to invite criticism.
- 32:54It just shows up. So, you know, so there's a lot
- 32:56of things with the relay teams. And, you know, of course, that
- 32:58continues to be a hot topic, specifically on the mid side.
- 33:01How much does a coach like Mike Marsh involve himself with you
- 33:06on a daily basis in this major? This may be why I'm not coach
- 33:11anymore. The relay coach is very, very
- 33:15important. Four by one.
- 33:15There's a lot of leg work and passing and things like that and
- 33:19relationships of how you're gonna do that.
- 33:20The four by four, yes, baton work is important.
- 33:24There's a difference between, you know, 252 and and 252.1 and
- 33:28that could be in the baton work, but it's less than the four by
- 33:31one. We still got to run a good
- 33:32quarter to, to, to have a good 4x4.
- 33:34So how much involvement is, is, is the relay coaches in with
- 33:38your relay, with your practices? What are you doing for practice
- 33:41with this uncertainty? If I'm going to run this weekend
- 33:43or next weekend, How does, how does that practice?
- 33:46You know, the actual code. This is, this is what you are,
- 33:47this is what you get paid for you to coach.
- 33:49How are how are you able to do that while you're out there in
- 33:53Paris? Well, let me go back to
- 33:55something you said earlier and I want to agree with that in that
- 33:59with with what Mike said, Coach Marsh said about the criticism
- 34:03piece there just comes with it with the job.
- 34:06I'll be the first, second and 3rd to say they all have a very
- 34:10tough job. They meeting the relay coaches,
- 34:13they have a depth. They definitely have a very
- 34:15tough job to do because there's no way everyone could be happy.
- 34:20I get that. And their job is not to make
- 34:23everyone happy. Their job is to go out to the
- 34:26win. All right.
- 34:27So the, so that being said, I, I, I understand and respect
- 34:33that. I mean, you know, I'm not AUS
- 34:35Olympic team coach, but we have very talented athletes here.
- 34:39I have been in situations where I've had to make very difficult
- 34:42calls as a, as a, as a head coach or relay coach.
- 34:46I get it, you know, so I understand that seat more than
- 34:51most. Now I will have zero problem
- 34:55saying this too. Do I agree with everything that
- 34:57was done and said decision that I make?
- 34:59No, I don't and that's OK. But you know, that's that that's
- 35:04just like it's their right to make the decision and I and I
- 35:06support and respect the decision and and they would say the same
- 35:09thing because I did. I also have the right to
- 35:13disagree because I know my kid, right?
- 35:16I know my athlete now I guess every coach can say that.
- 35:19Yeah, sure, I get that. So your question around.
- 35:25Saying on the practice. Side, Yeah, yeah.
- 35:27So, so practice for us was we were preparing for him to run
- 35:33the mixed 4x4. We have to because we didn't
- 35:37prepare for it and his numbers called and we're not ready.
- 35:41So we were prepared for it. I will say this too.
- 35:45I'll go on record. I have no problem going on
- 35:47record saying that we were thinking we were deserved.
- 35:50We were. We were hoping to.
- 35:51And, and I'll use my word, this is me.
- 35:53I'm not speaking for Quincy Wilson.
- 35:55I was expecting him to run on the mixed relay even at the very
- 35:59least in the trials. Why?
- 36:02Well, because we just went to Florida and ran 4420.
- 36:05That's right. On a wet track and beat a pro
- 36:12field, right. So if there's any question that
- 36:16the Olympic trials is a fluke, which I don't think there should
- 36:18be because he ran three straight 40 fours.
- 36:21Very few people ran three straight 40 fours.
- 36:24Even some people who made the team over him didn't run 3
- 36:26trade. If, if, if there's ever a
- 36:29question that he can come out there and line it up against the
- 36:32big boys and do well, we answer that.
- 36:36So we're preparing to run the mixed relay.
- 36:41What does that look like? Like you said, he's already in
- 36:44the barn. We're not going to like overdo
- 36:48it. We're we're and you know, by
- 36:49now, you know, our program is not we're not volume based
- 36:52anyway. I'm not we're not hitting you
- 36:54hard and heavy. And again, those everybody, you
- 36:57know, tomato, tomato everybody is is more than one way to do
- 37:00it. Skin a cat.
- 37:00So we just believe in in the way we do things.
- 37:03So we're just keeping them sharp and ready.
- 37:05You know, when he, his number was not called to run the mixed
- 37:11relay, which was surprising, not just for me, but for a lot of
- 37:15people, we respected the call, didn't like it, but respected it
- 37:21again. And these are, this is a
- 37:24conversation that you know, I had with the coaches and, and
- 37:26they know again, I, I wasn't the one busting and cussing and you
- 37:31won't We had a conversation. It was a lengthy conversation
- 37:34because I needed to understand why, because I got to go back
- 37:37and tell my kid why, right? Again, it's just he's not a pro.
- 37:42He's teenager. And the way that we approach
- 37:47coaching is it's more than just the X's and O's.
- 37:51It's the, it's as they say, it's, that's really, it's not
- 37:53the X&O's, it's the James and Joe's.
- 37:55And this is a person that I care about.
- 37:58This track stuff will be over one day for him.
- 38:01I don't know, it might be 20 years, but whenever it's over,
- 38:03I'm going to be there because of, I believe that's what we the
- 38:09impact. Somebody once said a coach can
- 38:13have more impact on a life than most people can have in four
- 38:22years. Like, of course you have like
- 38:24one season with a with the right coach, you can have more impact
- 38:27than most people have in four years.
- 38:28So, you know, I care about him. All this the, the, the rise of
- 38:33Quincy Wilson, all that kind of stuff.
- 38:35Look, before any of this happened, me and him were
- 38:38sitting down trying to figure out how do we navigate freshman
- 38:41year? How do we navigate like, how do
- 38:46you navigate moving from, you know, where you were based back
- 38:53in, in, in the Hampton, VA area to coming up back to DNB because
- 38:59it's where he's originally from. And, and how's that going?
- 39:01How, how's, how's it, how's it, how's it like being a 14 year
- 39:06old? So, so, so that's, those are the
- 39:09important things. So with that being said, OK,
- 39:11don't stay focused. Jolie, when I told him because
- 39:17that he was not running on the mix, he was upset.
- 39:20He was just upset. Not not in a, in the most
- 39:23respectful way, because you got to this kid more than anybody.
- 39:27No one is going to tell you my, that, that, oh, I saw Quincy
- 39:31Wilson, you, you, you don't hear those stories because they don't
- 39:33happen. And, and, and just to kind of
- 39:36wrap it up. So we had a conversation that
- 39:41will remain private to us. And then we said, we're going to
- 39:44handle, we're going to, we're going to, we're team players,
- 39:47We're going to do this the right way and whatever they asked us
- 39:49to do, we're going to do. But it was very disappointing
- 39:53and it it it, it impacted him in ways that that we didn't
- 40:00foresee. Stay on practice real quick
- 40:02before we get to those questions about the actual competition and
- 40:05what he was chosen and not chosen to do is is the relay
- 40:09coach because you know there's there's practice and then there
- 40:12is relay practice there is 4 by 4 practice.
- 40:14I'm assuming there is relay 4x4 practice.
- 40:17How how much is a coach Marsh directing because what he wants
- 40:22to do at relay practice, I assume he's directing that
- 40:25because he's the relay coach, right?
- 40:27But that's good. That's going to impact what you
- 40:29guys, the coaches of those athletes do for practice that
- 40:32day or stretch of days. How much like are you is there
- 40:36maybe this is a better Dumber way of asking it and you can
- 40:39expound on it is is there relay practice every day?
- 40:42So you have to account for that and what you're prescribing for
- 40:44practice that day or is it like, hey, it's Monday, Thursday,
- 40:48guys, be prepared. We're going to meet at 2:30 to
- 40:50do some practice stuff. Like how much is the relay coach
- 40:55putting volume, I guess into it so that it affects you as the
- 40:58coach and what you're trying to get done for the day and
- 41:00practice? Yeah, it's more of the latter.
- 41:02So they'll say for the four by four and four by one for that
- 41:05matter. Here are the relay practice days
- 41:08and here are the times. Right now.
- 41:11They try to set the days and the times.
- 41:13And so it's not conflicting with anyone's schedule in terms of
- 41:17individual competition. So 4 by 4 is less technical than
- 41:24the four by one. Not this need.
- 41:26It's not technical because it certainly isn't certain in
- 41:28certain regards, but really the four by 4 practices were more so
- 41:34just making sure that we can bring the stick to the zone and,
- 41:37you know, judging and coming versus outgoing, understanding
- 41:41where to stand in the zones for passes one to two, which again,
- 41:45This is why we felt we had a, a, a pretty good, we, we, we were
- 41:50strong member of the team because he's doing this all the
- 41:53time. He's in high school, so not
- 41:57foreign to him. And even at bullets, you know,
- 42:00we're going to, we're going to run them and we're going to,
- 42:01we're going to try to run the score up and the we're not
- 42:06running the score. We're going to try.
- 42:07We're going to give it our best is what I mean on, on that every
- 42:09single time. So he's very familiar.
- 42:12But again, you know, international rules sometimes
- 42:15are a little different, you know, but not much.
- 42:19It's still, like I said, 400 meters are on the track.
- 42:22So the the good thing is I appreciate that the coaches
- 42:25would make sure that the relay practices were kept at a
- 42:29minimal. Like they're not, hey, we're
- 42:32doing 15 4x4 passes, you know, all right, let's go round one.
- 42:37They didn't do that. It's just a couple passes.
- 42:39Make sure. And then if we had something
- 42:42else to do after that, we can get it done.
- 42:44So it was almost an extension of of our Walmart process and and
- 42:48it worked very well. Yeah, good.
- 42:50So it's not like overbearing or anything like that.
- 42:52That's why I was wondering like just because it's one thing if
- 42:55you know, if if I'm trying to think of a different event, a
- 42:581500m runner qualifies for the first time, it's like, OK, all
- 43:01you have to do you and your coach is focus on the 15.
- 43:04You don't have another coach barking like, well, we got to
- 43:06get baton passes or you know, anything like that.
- 43:08So with the relays though, with the sprinters in the relays, you
- 43:11do have to have a another coach who's in charge of relays.
- 43:13So there has to be communication.
- 43:15So appreciate that they, you know, try to communicate as
- 43:18early as possible. Try to put it at a time.
- 43:21Again, it's, I know from the outside it seems like, Oh well,
- 43:25why didn't you just do X or Y or Z?
- 43:28Why can't they just schedule it two weeks in advance?
- 43:31It's like, well, that guy has a qualifying round, so we can't do
- 43:35it during that time. And you know, so there's a lot
- 43:37more that goes into it than just simplicity of well, why didn't
- 43:40you do X? Well, because that's, that's not
- 43:42all we had to do. We had to do all these other
- 43:43things. So I appreciate that.
- 43:45So let's go into the competition here a little bit.
- 43:47It's interesting you mentioned about, you know, we kind of had,
- 43:54I, I know you well enough and therefore I feel like I know you
- 43:57and Quincy well enough that I don't think you guys, I know you
- 44:01guys don't believe that anything is to be just handed to you,
- 44:04that you earn things. And so I, I, I understand, I
- 44:09understand where you're coming from of like, oh, we felt like
- 44:12the mixed relay was, was going to be on the table here.
- 44:16And in fact, I, if I remember correctly, our episode where we
- 44:20talked about after Olympic trials, preparing for Paris,
- 44:22like we, like, I think we recorded, we either recorded it
- 44:25or published it like the Monday after the mixed relay.
- 44:28And we're like, and I think we can't we, we took off the
- 44:31episode of like, well, we can't wait to see what happens on
- 44:33Saturday because it was AI don't want to.
- 44:35I'm trying to be very careful here and not say it was a given,
- 44:39but it was an expectation. Like, Hey, this is where for a
- 44:4116 year old kid, first Olympics, man, this seems like a good
- 44:43place to get some experience on this side, getting in front of
- 44:4760,008 thousand whatever people were there.
- 44:50So when you said and now we know, OK, he did not run the mix
- 44:54relay. When you said that they told
- 44:57you, hey, we're not going to run Q in the mix relay.
- 45:01Was that a like, how is that framed?
- 45:04And you I want to be also very respectful of private
- 45:07conversations here. So you share what you feel is
- 45:09right to share here. Was it?
- 45:11Hey, Joe, but we're not going to run Q at all in the mixed
- 45:15relays. Or was it step by step of, hey,
- 45:17we're not running in the prelims, but be prepared for the
- 45:20finals? That's still a maybe like, did
- 45:22you know it all in one one bite? Or was it like, oh, there's
- 45:25still, you know, I don't want to say stringing along because I
- 45:27don't think they would ever do that, that their intent was not
- 45:29stringing along. But did you still have to be
- 45:30like had to be prepared for round two, which would have been
- 45:33the finals? Yeah.
- 45:35So the conversation with the phone conversation that was had
- 45:41and when the information came out, it was maybe the day before
- 45:46or two days before the actual event.
- 45:50And again, like I said, I was surprised because I, I felt he
- 45:54did it, did enough to deserve at least a spot in the prelims.
- 45:58Yeah, right, right. And again, so let me, I'm going
- 46:04to answer the question. I'm going to be as fair as I can
- 46:08and say it from this perspective.
- 46:11If it were me and it has been me, I've had to make difficult
- 46:15calls and things that make sure my thought process would be,
- 46:21let's give the the rookie, we'll call him rookie, some
- 46:27international experience in the round of the relay that doesn't
- 46:34have the biggest stage. You hear how I just framed that.
- 46:39Let's give him some experience because that was one thing that
- 46:41was share. Well, he doesn't have the
- 46:43experience, OK, well, how's he going to get it right?
- 46:48So let's put him in and I'm not throwing any shade at the mix
- 46:52relay, right, right, right, right, right.
- 46:54Again, I run the mix, we hold the 20, we're working in the mix
- 46:58relay, but I love the mix relay. But comparatively speaking that
- 47:03the stage of the mixed relay versus the 4 by 4.
- 47:06There's a reason why we don't end the meet with the mixed
- 47:09relay 4 by 4 and we begin it. Yeah, I 100% with that.
- 47:12That medal still counts. It's still your gold medalist if
- 47:14you win it. So the mixed 4x4, it's not the
- 47:17single sex 4x4. So we're we're with you.
- 47:19We get what you're saying. Yeah.
- 47:20Exactly so so my sentiment is, well, why not run the kid in the
- 47:26trials? And if you know the the
- 47:28veterans, you want to go to the veterans whatever the final.
- 47:31Because again, it's not like we went to Florida on purpose.
- 47:36We didn't have to go because he already made the team, right?
- 47:39But we wanted to leave no doubt. And that little joker left no
- 47:44doubt. No doubt.
- 47:46OK, I was watching something actually last night and they
- 47:48said that this guy, who was he put together something on
- 47:52Quincy. And I don't watch that stuff
- 47:54very often, but he said he said that possibly was one of the
- 47:57greatest track and field feats ever accomplished.
- 48:02A 16 year old running 4420. I'm like, yeah, I know.
- 48:06And then I said, wait a minute. So think about it.
- 48:09Like for his age to do what he did.
- 48:13Whatever. So that's why I went to Florida.
- 48:15So so OK, he doesn't get chosen. Great.
- 48:18All right, So to answer your question, were we strung along
- 48:21or were we told you to? No, I mean, we would we I I
- 48:24would say this way, we were told that there's a possibility.
- 48:26Run the final. OK, so I don't consider that
- 48:30being strung alone. Strung Along isn't and I don't
- 48:34believe Mike Marsh or. You.
- 48:36No, no, he didn't do that. I just wondered if they made the
- 48:39decision of like, hey, for both rounds, prelim and final, we're
- 48:42not using them. Or was it like, so there's four
- 48:44rounds total that you're, you're concerned about.
- 48:46First round of the mix, finals of the mix, first round of 4 by
- 48:494 finals. So there's four things possible
- 48:52for him, for the athlete. So I that's what I was just
- 48:54wondering like is, was it a decision that was based
- 48:56completely on the 1st 2 or was it one at a time?
- 48:59I'm here and you say it was kind of one out of a time.
- 49:00It was one at a time, It was one at a time, and you know it.
- 49:07It was and because the mix final was, I believe, if I'm not
- 49:12mistaken, the very next day, if not two days after, we thought,
- 49:18hey, will there be a possibility?
- 49:19But it didn't happen. It didn't happen.
- 49:22And I'll I'll say this, it was it impacted our training and
- 49:29here's how. All right, I'll I'll, I'll
- 49:31unpack this a little bit. I'm dealing with a 16 year old
- 49:35kid. And then here's I want to like
- 49:38also like any controversy on here because I, I did something,
- 49:42maybe this question would come out late, but I'll just tell you
- 49:45we'll talk about it now. When he was not selected to be
- 49:51on the mixed and then he also was when that didn't happen.
- 49:56He was so motivated to prove his worth.
- 50:01He went out there and ran harder than I've ever seen him running
- 50:06practice, which in this space is too hard.
- 50:11But that's a 16 year old kid. That's right.
- 50:14Being a 16 year old kid. And I, I, I'll take that eight
- 50:18days a week over the kid just cowering in the corner crying
- 50:22and, and, and, and you know, saying book my ticket to go
- 50:25home. Now he's like, I'm going to show
- 50:28that no, I, I deserve. And he did.
- 50:31I'm like, I'm like, calm down, like not calm down coaching,
- 50:35let's do more. I literally had to stop him from
- 50:39braggarts one day. He was like, let's do more,
- 50:40let's do more. Let's do because he's, he's now
- 50:43now, now he's he's, he's a competitor.
- 50:47Like I've done everything. I, I, I made top six from lane
- 50:502, right? Which again, that's what we got.
- 50:56I rich ran 4420. At that point in time we ran to
- 50:584420. He was world #8 not you, 20,
- 51:06he's world #8 and he feels like, and I can't make AI can't make
- 51:11the prelims for the mix. He, he felt.
- 51:15Well anyway, I'll let him just talk about that.
- 51:17But I, I know how I felt about it.
- 51:20I thought he should have been on the team.
- 51:22And I said it and we had a conversation.
- 51:25It was about a 30 minute conversation that was
- 51:27respectful. There was no drawing back and
- 51:29forth, busting and cussing, but I made I, I, I felt like I did
- 51:34what it, what any coach would do in that situation.
- 51:37And so Fast forward to the next practice.
- 51:47Again, he's he's, he's pushing himself beyond like I.
- 51:50And it's one thing to tell him other than going out there and
- 51:53attacking a little joker. You know, when you tell a kid
- 51:56and and coaches know this like you say, hey, listen, that one's
- 51:59a little hard to back off of this one.
- 52:00OK, coach, gotcha. What are you going to do?
- 52:04You know, so the next practice, he wound up going out there and
- 52:12catching a hamstring cramp. I say cramp because that's what
- 52:17the medical and I want to be very clear and on record with
- 52:21you and you and and because you're my guy.
- 52:24It's the first time I've talked about this and first time and he
- 52:27hasn't even talked about it. He's talked.
- 52:28He said we had an injury, but he hasn't talked about the
- 52:31specifics after he did this. He was into his first run.
- 52:36He backed off of it. He didn't pull up all you know
- 52:39how you hamstring like somebody, some like like he gets shot in
- 52:42the leg. He just backed off of it and
- 52:44eased and stopped the Rep and I said, what's wrong, Sam?
- 52:49Hamstring feels a little iffy. I said, let's go get it checked
- 52:52out. The medical professionals there,
- 52:56which are some of the best in the world, like these guys and
- 53:00ladies are great. And I'm not saying that because
- 53:02I'm I'm a a company guy. I'm not, you know, I'm still
- 53:05I'll tell you no, they were the real deal.
- 53:10And they, they, they did everything right.
- 53:14And they did, they put him through every test.
- 53:17And you know, they had, they had machines that I didn't know
- 53:21existed. Like, oh, this is phenomenal.
- 53:22Like, whoa, they said it's, it's, it's not a tear, it's not
- 53:28a pole, it's a cramp, Right. So now, mind you, because he's
- 53:33this big story, this doesn't stay in the camp.
- 53:38It hits social media. Quincy Wilson's injured, Quincy
- 53:42Wilson's injured, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 53:44And the social media thing is going on.
- 53:46And so I jumped on, I'd never jumped on my, I want to jump on
- 53:51a lot, but I'm like, no, they're not going to do this because I
- 53:54don't want this to be used against him.
- 53:56And, and in fairness, Coach Marsh and I, as well as Coach
- 54:00Freeman, we were all in conversation about it and they
- 54:02knew, you know, but I went in there and said, no, I said, he's
- 54:07not injured. OK.
- 54:09That's I, I, I responded to some of the social media stuff that
- 54:12was out there. Why did I say that?
- 54:15Because the doctors told me it was a cramp and and he will be
- 54:20OK. It's a cramp and we're going to
- 54:22work through this. And when I hear cramps, we get
- 54:25cramps all the time. You know, especially at our age,
- 54:27right? You know, you get cramps all the
- 54:28time. That's not me.
- 54:29I've pulled a hamstring before. I know what that feels like.
- 54:32And also I've also called a cramp.
- 54:34So that's what it was diagnosed as.
- 54:37Here are the people who can verify that you ready for this?
- 54:44His parents, doctors and make I'm telling you and, and, and,
- 54:51and, and that's verifiable because that's what happened.
- 54:57Now some people can say, well, a cramp is technical injury and
- 55:01all. OK, whatever.
- 55:03I'm telling you what the doctor said, I'm telling you what we
- 55:05were working through. So, so from that point on, it
- 55:09was tougher for him because he's going through something now that
- 55:13he's never been through. He's in a new country, he's
- 55:18going deeper into the season he's ever been, although we
- 55:20we've managed that very well. Ergo the 4420, he's in an
- 55:28environment that he cannot control because he's now
- 55:30disappointed and discouraged that he he's not selected to do
- 55:34something that he feels he earned.
- 55:37So there's, there's, there's a lot of factors going on.
- 55:40And he's 16. Right.
- 55:43So. So I think he handled that
- 55:46better than or as well as any adult I know.
- 55:50How are you handling some of these things?
- 55:54And what I mean by that is so I think I'm going to speak for the
- 55:58world here. I've never spoken for the world,
- 56:00but I got the mic, so I can't. I think the world expected him
- 56:04to be on that mixed relay as well that you know, there there
- 56:06is the athleticism. I think there's no argument,
- 56:10especially after to your point, I was going to say to your point
- 56:14about the Florida beat, but I think the trials 3 rounds show
- 56:16that that's always the, the knock is can they do it in the
- 56:18rounds And he did it. Then he comes back and adds a
- 56:21little cherry on top with Florida, right?
- 56:22So I think athletically we all thought, OK, he is still 16
- 56:25though. That's one thing you can't get
- 56:26over. You know, you can do a lot of
- 56:28training, be a lot of good, but you can't force experience.
- 56:31And so he is 16. So OK, let's protect him and our
- 56:34Team USA. Let's put him in the, the mixed
- 56:36relay. He, he, he'll do fine there and
- 56:38we'll run our vets and everybody else in the, the open 4 by 4
- 56:42when that doesn't happen. And then the rumor of the injury
- 56:48comes through. Like I, I texted you at one
- 56:52point. I think, I actually, I think I
- 56:53texted you three times during this whole Olympics.
- 56:56One was after we found out that he didn't make the next relay
- 56:58and I was just, you know, I, I was just supporting you like,
- 57:01Hey, you guys earned that. Like, I don't know what's going
- 57:03on, but you know, and then it was after the the cramp, I was
- 57:07like, hey, is and everything OK. I think that's literally how I
- 57:09put it to because I was like, hey, is everything OK?
- 57:11And then the third one was after the 4 by 4, you know, saying,
- 57:13Hey, Congrats on everything. But I almost didn't text you
- 57:16though, because I was like, dude, he is getting hit up from
- 57:21everybody. Everybody know Jolie.
- 57:23So I'm not special. I'm not the only one who's got
- 57:25your cell phone and things like that.
- 57:26So I was like, I don't want to be 1 of of 100 people.
- 57:30We'll talk after. But I was like, you know, my
- 57:32love for you was like, all right, I'm just at least let
- 57:33them know that I'm supporting. That type.
- 57:34Of thing, how are you handling the text?
- 57:38The you know, I assume coaches are walking by, you know, you do
- 57:42got boys out there. So they're walking by saying,
- 57:43hey, what's going on? You know, of course, all the
- 57:45tweets, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, so you name it.
- 57:48How are you handling? I mean, this is one of the and
- 57:53you've been involved in some big moments.
- 57:55I think about like the pen relays, baton drops and what you
- 57:58does and things like that. And you know, the national
- 58:00records. This is a big national stage for
- 58:03you. How are you handling the media,
- 58:06social media, call it negative side in relation and not
- 58:09negative like, hey, what are you doing, Joe?
- 58:11More of like, what's going on? Why aren't they doing this?
- 58:13And you're trying to get a job done.
- 58:14By the way, while everybody's got their opinions and we're
- 58:17free to have our opinions. But how how are you handling
- 58:19during this time frame? All this text, Tik Toks,
- 58:22twitters. How are you handling all that at
- 58:24this time? The great question.
- 58:28So my first, foremost and always priority is my kid.
- 58:36So it's not about me, right? So it's and making sure he's OK
- 58:42and OK is not just physical. OK is emotion, it's mental, it's
- 58:49social. He's he's the only teenager
- 58:51there. And also a lot of times like we
- 58:55were just friends, man. And I'm not trying to say like
- 58:57I'm some loser. I need to have my teenager, my
- 59:00friend. No, like I actually, that's a
- 59:03badge of honor that I consider him a friend as well as well as
- 59:08a coach. I'm a mentor.
- 59:09I'm all those things. But look, coaches understand
- 59:13this. You got a problem if they don't
- 59:16talk to you outside the sport. And I'll say this to coach
- 59:21respectfully, you are the problem in most of those cases
- 59:25if they don't talk to you outside of the sport.
- 59:28And I know what I just said and I know I probably just upset a
- 59:31lot of people, but here's why. It doesn't mean that you have to
- 59:34because some of us have athletes that are just off the chain.
- 59:38It's just crazy. You know, they're doing crazy
- 59:40stuff. I'd rather you talk to me about
- 59:42the crazy so I can minimize the crazy or help you mitigate the
- 59:47crazy as opposed to you doing the crazy that I don't know
- 59:49about. So you got to be, you have to,
- 59:55there has to be a relationship beyond.
- 59:58I had an athlete who told me two days ago she was considering
- 1:00:03going pro and she's not a bullish athlete, so you won't be
- 1:00:05able to trace this one, but she is that she was a killer in
- 1:00:10college track and field and told me my coach never asked how I'm
- 1:00:16doing in college and a coach is a pro coach.
- 1:00:22He never asked how I'm doing and that impacted me.
- 1:00:29Right. Yeah.
- 1:00:30So anyway, so I'm the as far as the the, the IT was, it was a
- 1:00:35lot coming. I mean, things are coming at the
- 1:00:37mall areas to answer a question about how am I handling this?
- 1:00:41First take care, make sure he's good.
- 1:00:46Then I had to make sure that I was balancing something that you
- 1:00:51probably saw me in my brain navigating even through our
- 1:00:55conversation. I want to be fair and respectful
- 1:01:02to the decision makers, but I also must do my job by speaking
- 1:01:15up for my athlete. And I've never been a person
- 1:01:21that's been afraid to speak truth to power.
- 1:01:24I think great things that happen in history, you have to be able
- 1:01:29to do that. And I just spoke my truth and
- 1:01:35it's OK. Like my truth doesn't have to be
- 1:01:37your truth. My story has to be your story.
- 1:01:39And we can just agree to disagree at the end of the day.
- 1:01:45You said you're speaking for the world, bro.
- 1:01:51This became an international story.
- 1:01:54Let's not get a choice. And I'm not saying that because
- 1:01:56he's he's, he's my athletes. So whatever this kid, what he
- 1:02:02did, and This is why I was so emotional in in in my post
- 1:02:06interview at at the trials, Olympic trials, because the
- 1:02:11pressure that was on him to not only achieve, but to exceed
- 1:02:17expectations. And still with a smile on his
- 1:02:21face, still respectful, still keep everybody laughing and
- 1:02:25engaged still, because he's still he's such a kid.
- 1:02:28Like he he gets it. He's not like, don't call me a
- 1:02:30kid. I'm a young man.
- 1:02:33No, he's like, no, I'm a kid. He said it.
- 1:02:35He's like, what did he say? It was one of those quotes.
- 1:02:38It was funny. He's like, I'm running grown man
- 1:02:40times. So I have a great quote, meaning
- 1:02:48I'm not a oh man. So this story, Mike it it it was
- 1:02:53an international story and I will go as far as say it was one
- 1:02:56of the biggest stories of the Olympic Games.
- 1:03:01How do I know that we got people like LeBron and Steph Curry
- 1:03:04coming up to him asking for selfies.
- 1:03:08Hey, I heard about you. Hey, man, you're that you,
- 1:03:11Quincy Wilson kid. And and it look, that's the
- 1:03:15game. That's the whole conversation.
- 1:03:17And I'm sure those guys were also coming up to you, Joe.
- 1:03:20LeBron came up to you, put his arm around you and to.
- 1:03:22Joe LeBron and I hung out so much.
- 1:03:24I didn't think he's going to make it back to the to the game
- 1:03:27one night. No, I never saw LeBron.
- 1:03:31And that's the point. Like he's got a lot on it and he
- 1:03:34handled it magnificently. So my job just to kind of wrap
- 1:03:40that, that this, this section up here, my job was how I navigated
- 1:03:44that was very strategically and I got had some great help.
- 1:03:50That's a great insight. I'll give a shout out to Louis
- 1:03:54Johnson. Louis from NBC, we became very
- 1:04:00close over the, over the course of trials and everything.
- 1:04:03And, and he was, he was a great help because he's just a great
- 1:04:07guy. He's not just in it for a story.
- 1:04:10You know, he's, he's in it for people.
- 1:04:13And his, his advice on some of the stuff, even if it was to his
- 1:04:18detriment, because when, when everything was going on, he's
- 1:04:21like one of the things he said, he's like, Joe, don't talk to
- 1:04:25anybody right now, anybody including me.
- 1:04:29I'm talking to you as a friend. He's he's sending me text
- 1:04:31message. We're talking about, you know,
- 1:04:33some of when some of the conference happened, all that
- 1:04:34kind of stuff. And, and he was so helpful, but
- 1:04:37there were several people like that.
- 1:04:39But the fact that he's on the media side, you know, because he
- 1:04:42could have tried, he could have flipped it like, hey, Joe man,
- 1:04:44you know, we're cool, right? So and you just help me.
- 1:04:47No, he was, he was, he was the consummate professional, but
- 1:04:50also a an immensely caring person and, and those kind of
- 1:04:55conversation and also people like yourself.
- 1:04:57Like look, I read every text message.
- 1:04:58I maybe not been able to respond to all of them, but I was
- 1:05:01getting like probably a couple hundred a day, so I got friends.
- 1:05:05Hey man, come on, you too good there.
- 1:05:06OK, You know well this, this, this is a little different than
- 1:05:11than respectfully, we want to been relaxed a little.
- 1:05:15Different So what was it I'm asking a question then I'm going
- 1:05:20to ask a pre question so you can tell the whole story so let's
- 1:05:23talk about good news. What was it like when you got
- 1:05:25the call that he was going to run We did stage by stage.
- 1:05:29I'm assuming that was, hey, we are going to run the, the the
- 1:05:33prelims, the first round of the four by four.
- 1:05:35What was that like? That's going to be a pretty cool
- 1:05:37phone call or conversation. And the pre question that is,
- 1:05:42did you even at this point think it was going to happen?
- 1:05:45Like, hey, we didn't get picked for the mix relay, so we really
- 1:05:48going to get picked for the the open relay?
- 1:05:51Are we like was there was hope kind of fading away that you're
- 1:05:55going to run it all or was there still hope for the open?
- 1:05:58And then what was it like when you got the call for the for the
- 1:06:00open 4 by 4? So the I don't want to say the
- 1:06:13unforeseeable happened, but they well, let me let me say it this
- 1:06:16way. What I've been told is that the
- 1:06:22world is they're trying to level or even a playing field up by
- 1:06:30giving us less selections for the relay pools.
- 1:06:37In other words, I mean, we could have took and we I think we took
- 1:06:40six. We could have took 12 quality,
- 1:06:43you know, guys who can get it done, you know, try those guys
- 1:06:45in that semi final. Like that could have been in
- 1:06:47that final and you know, we could have loaded it up.
- 1:06:52But what I've been told is that the world's you know, they're
- 1:06:55they're they're they're tired of America winning so much.
- 1:06:58So you know, less you got to get less choose from, etcetera,
- 1:07:02right? Yeah, it affects everybody
- 1:07:05because that's why like femme Kebola had to run, you know, she
- 1:07:08ran the mix and she also ran her 400 hurdles and she ran 4
- 1:07:14before. So like, you know, because they
- 1:07:15didn't have as many, but obviously you know who has, you
- 1:07:18don't have a lot of femme Kebola out there period.
- 1:07:20So, so because there's less of a pool, when the three guys made
- 1:07:29the final in the 400 and the three guys made the final four
- 1:07:35hurdles, I wasn't surprised that we got the call because you need
- 1:07:39us. Is that too honest?
- 1:07:43And I don't mean that disrespectful.
- 1:07:44It's, it's, it's, it's me being honest.
- 1:07:48It was a need at that point. Yeah, well, let me get, let me
- 1:07:52be clear. I feel like he deserved every
- 1:07:54bit of it. I feel like personally, he
- 1:07:57deserved to be on both teams based upon his body of work, not
- 1:08:01based upon he's the cute story, not he's a killer and you've
- 1:08:06seen him kill. Everyone has seen him.
- 1:08:09That's why the story is so freaking amazing.
- 1:08:12It's not like, oh man, look at this man little engine.
- 1:08:16Look at him going out there and he's not he's not shaking out
- 1:08:20the line like Lee, like oh, and like everybody's feeling starred
- 1:08:23for him, like he's a good No, he's like a freaking.
- 1:08:26You ever see those, those, those bulls like right in, you know
- 1:08:31what, right at the rodeos, they're kind of, you know, and
- 1:08:34when they let it, that's how he is.
- 1:08:37When that, when that, when those gates fly open, you better watch
- 1:08:41out. They just come.
- 1:08:44Everybody saw that on multiple occasions.
- 1:08:47So, but I wasn't surprised because I knew I, I, you know,
- 1:08:52I'm, I'm, I'm good at math. There's the quote.
- 1:08:56I'm good at math. I did a.
- 1:08:59Lot of things, but math is one of my strong suits.
- 1:09:01That is where we differ. That's cool and all, but there's
- 1:09:05still uncertainty until you get the call right there.
- 1:09:09There's no guarantees. There's no.
- 1:09:11Giving. So then what was it like when
- 1:09:14you got the call and it was official, hey, tomorrow or
- 1:09:17whenever, however many days before it happened, maybe the
- 1:09:20morning of, What was that like? Because that has to be a little
- 1:09:22bit of relieving, a little bit of like, OK, because I started
- 1:09:28asking the question, this is interesting.
- 1:09:30I started asking the question on social media because I don't
- 1:09:34it's I actually don't think it was based on Quincy, but Quincy
- 1:09:37hit this model of this question I asked is are you an Olympian?
- 1:09:41If you go to the Olympia, you qualified for the team and you
- 1:09:43don't like if Quincy would not have run the four before, does
- 1:09:46he get to still put the the tattoo rings right?
- 1:09:51I personally think yes. Now there's a whole there's a
- 1:09:54equal amount of people that say no, you didn't compete.
- 1:09:57And I'm like, so I started making the question of like,
- 1:09:59like my example was like, so if I'm the backup Center for the
- 1:10:03whoever, I don't pay attention that fell.
- 1:10:05So I have no clue who won the last Super Bowl, if our team
- 1:10:08wins the Super Bowl, but I didn't take a snap because I'm
- 1:10:11the backup. Am I still a Super Bowl
- 1:10:13champion? Yeah, you absolutely are.
- 1:10:15You still get the ring, you still get the bonus and all that
- 1:10:17kind of things. So my thinking, like with Quincy
- 1:10:18was like, hey, you still on the team?
- 1:10:20He's still helping people out at practice.
- 1:10:22Like, and there was really proud.
- 1:10:22Like, he's still part of the team.
- 1:10:23And if he didn't get to run, he's still an Olympian, bro, in
- 1:10:26my opinion. So all that to say, there is
- 1:10:29some relief. I have to imagine that.
- 1:10:30OK, We, you don't we're runners. We came here to compete.
- 1:10:33We get to actually compete now. What was that like when you got
- 1:10:36that phone call? Well, the only reason it it
- 1:10:41wasn't a phone call at that point because we're all
- 1:10:42together. The only reason, the only reason
- 1:10:45the other one was a phone call, is because it was just
- 1:10:47proximity. Yeah, I say phone call just as.
- 1:10:50A yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I get it.
- 1:10:51You get it. So because the first one was a
- 1:10:54phone call. It was when when we were told
- 1:10:56that we would not be on the mix, that was a phone call.
- 1:10:59And but this one was it was it was in person.
- 1:11:03It was just more in passing or is during I think relay
- 1:11:06practice. I think it was So hey, you know,
- 1:11:09we're going to go with them. And it was actually not like
- 1:11:14right before because I was even told, you know, what leg he was
- 1:11:18going to run. And we were like, OK, like
- 1:11:23literally what we said was we're here to support whatever you
- 1:11:29need to do, coach, we're here to do.
- 1:11:31That's what Quincy said. That's what I said, and that's
- 1:11:35what his parents said. So like.
- 1:11:37OK, Joe, that's that's cool. That's cute to hear.
- 1:11:40I'm going to push back here a little bit.
- 1:11:42You're telling me that right now I'm recording this if Q hadn't
- 1:11:47been chosen for the 4 by 4. So he goes, he has a great
- 1:11:50experience, he learns a lot, but he didn't get picked when to run
- 1:11:54any relay and the results still happened the way they did.
- 1:11:57We still win goal and all that kind of stuff that you'd be
- 1:11:59like, hey, you know what, we had a great experience.
- 1:12:01That's the way it was supposed to work out.
- 1:12:02We're fine with how it worked out.
- 1:12:03You wouldn't be a little ticked off.
- 1:12:05Hey man, we're you are competitors.
- 1:12:10You went there to compete. You're telling me you'd have
- 1:12:12been fine. All good.
- 1:12:13Well, so here's the thing. You got it.
- 1:12:15So you got to go back to the mix.
- 1:12:17So, you know, if we're going to unpack, let's unpack, right?
- 1:12:22The world was question. The world was bewildered why he
- 1:12:30was not on the 4 by 4 mix. The world was not just me.
- 1:12:34The world was. Then again, I get it.
- 1:12:37It's not my call to make. It's it's, it's, that's the
- 1:12:41coach's call to make. And again, we were, I want to go
- 1:12:43on record saying I respect the decision.
- 1:12:46I just respectfully disagree. And, and anyone who knows me,
- 1:12:49that's what you're going to get you.
- 1:12:50I'm I'm going to shoot straight with you.
- 1:12:52You're not going to wonder what I think because that's not fair.
- 1:12:55Like look, you know the Bible says speak the truth in love,
- 1:12:58right? So I'm I'm going to tell you the
- 1:13:00truth. So yes, the I was disappointed
- 1:13:04now, but forget me. The world was disappointed that
- 1:13:07he wasn't running mixed. If they didn't select them for
- 1:13:13the 4 by 4 for some chance, I would have been the last person
- 1:13:16who had to worry about in my opinion because I think there
- 1:13:18would have been such an uproar. But for sure.
- 1:13:21But however, to answer your question specifically, yeah, I
- 1:13:26would have been. I was upset when you didn't run
- 1:13:29a mix. I would have been upset, but I
- 1:13:32don't think it would have been a waste of trip because there's so
- 1:13:34many other things and nuances that you get to learn even as a
- 1:13:39coach at that level, and so it wouldn't have been a waste of
- 1:13:44trip. Yeah, agree.
- 1:13:45Agree with that 100%. Not for us at 16.
- 1:13:47So would I have been disappointed?
- 1:13:48Yeah. And there was a time where we
- 1:13:50weren't sure if he was going to run because, you know, as this
- 1:13:53cramp wasn't going away, right. You know, call it cramp, call it
- 1:13:57injury, whatever. I called it what the doctors
- 1:13:59called it. And I'm standing by that.
- 1:14:01And anyone who says, oh, he's just lying doesn't look OK.
- 1:14:04I don't care. I know what I was told.
- 1:14:06And I know what what experience, you know, as it was, you know,
- 1:14:11it took it took a longer time to kind of subside.
- 1:14:13You know, some things you have a Charley horse to think and go
- 1:14:16away in 10 minutes or sometimes you fail for three days.
- 1:14:19You know, the body just how it is.
- 1:14:22I didn't know if that were going to be something that they say,
- 1:14:24Oh, you know, you know, let's let's not because of that.
- 1:14:29We didn't 100% no. But again, because I understood
- 1:14:33the numbers, I figured that he'd get the call when he did.
- 1:14:40So what's it like? So we, we go to the first round
- 1:14:43of the four by 4 now, and I'm assuming you're in the stadium.
- 1:14:48You'll, you'll tell us in, in your answer here.
- 1:14:51I mean, this is what you, I don't want to put words in your
- 1:14:53mouth. This is what a lot of coaches
- 1:14:55dream of. I mean, making it to the state
- 1:14:58beat in your high school is a big deal.
- 1:15:02I'm not. No one's taking that away from
- 1:15:03making it to NCAA championships or you're in any AIG Co
- 1:15:07championships. Big deal, big deal.
- 1:15:11But we all watch the friggin Olympics so we know if we ever
- 1:15:14had the opportunity to be at the Olympics and have an athlete,
- 1:15:18cream of the cream, I mean it's amazing.
- 1:15:20What's it like your 16 year old athlete?
- 1:15:25It's one thing like I think it's like Lance and Dennis and those
- 1:15:27guys who have, you know, multiple athletes have done it
- 1:15:30multiple times of 25 to 40 year olds out there doing it.
- 1:15:34This is a 16 year old. What was it like seeing him on
- 1:15:38the track? All the lights, all the cameras,
- 1:15:41the gun goes off. What was that like as the coach?
- 1:15:48I would love to give you some spectacular colorful answer that
- 1:15:55it was, you know, I saw the heavens open and, you know, a
- 1:15:59beam of light came down and you know, you know, it was the best
- 1:16:06experience that I've had next to having, you know, my children
- 1:16:11and all that. It's what we train for.
- 1:16:16It was the arena. It was battle.
- 1:16:21And when we get prepared to go to battle, it doesn't matter if
- 1:16:26it's ten people in the stands or 80,000.
- 1:16:31The way we train here is we get ready for war.
- 1:16:37So I was in warm up. I wasn't in and then so was he.
- 1:16:44It was attract me for us and attract me for us means battle.
- 1:16:48And I'm not trying to diminish or, or, or or you know how I
- 1:16:50feel about that kind of. I mean, I respect those who've
- 1:16:53given their lives, you know, for not just our country, but for
- 1:16:56anything. Some people give their lives for
- 1:16:58their family or, you know, where the kids will be.
- 1:17:00I mean, you name it. So I respect war at a highest
- 1:17:04level, especially with my, my dad being a veteran and you
- 1:17:08know, the whole 9. But yeah, we, we're, that's,
- 1:17:13that's what we train for my like you're me when I say we don't
- 1:17:19approach this sport any different than the greats in the
- 1:17:25past and the present. It doesn't age does not matter
- 1:17:30at that point. It's are you prepared to give
- 1:17:34everything that you've trained for, prepared for, prayed for, I
- 1:17:40believe for all that in this moment.
- 1:17:43Are you ready to go? And I look in his eyes every
- 1:17:45time. And when he's ready to go, it's
- 1:17:49almost like everything else is is inconsequential.
- 1:17:53So now that's how we roll. I'm not saying my story.
- 1:17:58I'm somewhere. Oh my gosh, this is the ultimate
- 1:18:00order. We just want to compete and,
- 1:18:03and, and the thing that I'm going to say, I wish I had it
- 1:18:06back because there's nothing we could have done differently
- 1:18:09about the train. So, so anybody said, well, you
- 1:18:11ran them too hard or everybody who was at that practice at the
- 1:18:17high performance training center, which by the way, I did
- 1:18:19have, I want to correct something I said earlier.
- 1:18:22I didn't have access to the warm up track at the Olympic Stadium,
- 1:18:27the high performance training centers where all of the US Team
- 1:18:33USA athletes practice at full access to that, as did all the
- 1:18:38coaches. So we were there every single
- 1:18:40day at our trainings. It was a phenomenal training
- 1:18:42center and, and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:18:43So I just didn't have like the one time he was warming up, I
- 1:18:47didn't have access to the warm up track and that I, you know, I
- 1:18:50peered through, but everything else, I, I was there.
- 1:18:55But it's nothing we could have done different because you know,
- 1:18:59who can prepare for those variables of of, you know,
- 1:19:04disappointment. And then, then, then you're,
- 1:19:08you're, you're going, your emotions going here.
- 1:19:12And then, then it takes you there like, like it's there's a
- 1:19:17thing. And for what he like he listen,
- 1:19:20he knows the world, the eyes of the world that are on him.
- 1:19:23He's just been prepared for it. So but he's not again, he's a
- 1:19:28four point O student. He's still yummy.
- 1:19:30He's not like, oh, y'all are really watching this, but he's
- 1:19:33he's not taking advantage of it and he's not he's not allowing
- 1:19:36to go to his head. But no, that's again, he's he
- 1:19:39had more pressure on him this summer and those Olympic Games.
- 1:19:43But I'd say 99% of those who participate.
- 1:19:46Yeah, that's quite a good plan. So how we, how we approach it?
- 1:19:52Get ready for battle. Let's go to war.
- 1:19:54Let's be. Let's be who we are and give
- 1:19:55everything we got. I think the relays, the relays
- 1:19:59are different than an open event.
- 1:20:01Just like a a multi decathlete or heptathlon.
- 1:20:04Their individual events is different.
- 1:20:06And what I mean by that is if a. If the goal for a decathlete is
- 1:20:11to win the gold medal and they do so, but they didn't do very
- 1:20:15well in one event, I don't care about that event.
- 1:20:17I don't go well, what happened that one event?
- 1:20:19Why? It's like, man, do you want the
- 1:20:20gold? That's that's the end prize.
- 1:20:22So for the relay, the end prize is to win the gold medal, which
- 1:20:25occurred. So I'm not really interested in
- 1:20:28having a conversation about his performance as it relates to it
- 1:20:32because he was part of the gold medal that that was the goal was
- 1:20:34the win gold. I don't care what the individual
- 1:20:36splits had or happened or things like that.
- 1:20:39So I don't want to talk about that.
- 1:20:40I am curious though for someone who's coached Quincy for several
- 1:20:44years now, done a lot of relays, done a lot of good relays,
- 1:20:47knowing that there is a difference between when you run
- 1:20:52even pen relays versus the Olympics as far as Quincy in the
- 1:20:55team make up. And I'm trying to be careful
- 1:20:58because I don't want to pit you against any other coaches.
- 1:21:01But in your experience, do you think he ran the right leg
- 1:21:05should have been more of a second third?
- 1:21:06I'm assuming that fourth leg was not an option because, you know,
- 1:21:10there's a lot of other things that go into who becomes the
- 1:21:12anchor and things like that. But like, is he a solid starter?
- 1:21:15And, you know, stay in your lane, You know, first leg goes
- 1:21:18all the way in your lane. Was that a good leg for him?
- 1:21:20Or could maybe? And did we do that to minimize
- 1:21:24him in regards to the mistakes he could make?
- 1:21:26Because he only has to hand off once.
- 1:21:27He doesn't have to receive and give off.
- 1:21:30Like was that a in your opinion as his coach, you've seen him in
- 1:21:33lots of different legs. Was was that were you expected?
- 1:21:36Talk to us about that part of it.
- 1:21:41Well, we have the conversation. Coach Marsh and I had the
- 1:21:44conversation prior to, so we knew that he was going to lead
- 1:21:49off. We just, the rest of the world
- 1:21:50didn't know that obviously until it happened.
- 1:21:55And well, I'll take that back some somewhat.
- 1:21:58A video got out that we were doing block starts and whatever,
- 1:22:01you know. So is that where I would have
- 1:22:05put them now? You know, but if if I were the
- 1:22:08relay coach, I think I would have done a lot of things
- 1:22:11different. And guess what, it may not have
- 1:22:13worked out as well that a lot of things worked out for the
- 1:22:17Olympic team and they're on the relay side for Team USA, so I'm
- 1:22:21not. There's risk each way, actually,
- 1:22:23you're right. Good point.
- 1:22:24As you're talking about that, like you're still putting a 16
- 1:22:26year old in the blocks, by the way that that there's a first
- 1:22:28place, a mistake can happen that can be devastating.
- 1:22:30And he passed that test, obviously.
- 1:22:31But yeah, it's. Not well, Yeah.
- 1:22:32And, and and one of the things again.
- 1:22:34So one of the things that that that Mike was saying, he kept
- 1:22:37reminding Quincy is one step on the line of the DQ, right?
- 1:22:42Which is different. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:22:44Something different at their level.
- 1:22:46Think you can get two or something like that but.
- 1:22:49That's a great point. So, but my thing is, again,
- 1:22:52that's another reason why I wouldn't have necessarily put
- 1:22:55him there because, but again, they they chose for, for
- 1:22:59whatever reason, they did. And and again, I was, I was true
- 1:23:02to my word, like we're going to do whatever he asked us to do.
- 1:23:05We're going to do everything. Now, again, if you're asking me
- 1:23:07as a coach, coach to coach, not trying to, you know, bash
- 1:23:10because I won't do that. I can disagree without being
- 1:23:13disagreeable. That's right.
- 1:23:15I would not have put him in that position.
- 1:23:19I, I would have put him a different leg and it would have,
- 1:23:24but you know. Yeah, I I was just curious
- 1:23:26because you've seen him in lots of different legs.
- 1:23:27And no, no, I his. So again, when he's at his best,
- 1:23:32and I will say this respectfully, when he's at his
- 1:23:37best, if there's somebody in front of him, you got a problem,
- 1:23:43you got a problem, he's going to hunt.
- 1:23:46Yeah, Yeah. When he's out of bed, watch,
- 1:23:50even watch what happened at trials, even from lane 2, which
- 1:23:56again, it was a learning experience for him.
- 1:23:59It was a learning experience like every year, it seems like
- 1:24:02every year we go to Eugene, we learn his freshman year, we went
- 1:24:06there to U 20s. He learned.
- 1:24:08Don't go at 200 like he literally he he didn't get out
- 1:24:13hard enough and he saw oh, I'm behind at 200 and he went into
- 1:24:17kill mode, got a control. It's it's a control kill.
- 1:24:21You know. So but and I still to this day
- 1:24:24say that's that race right there is some of the biggest heart
- 1:24:28I've seen him run with because when you go at 200 in our event,
- 1:24:32the quarter and most people crawl home, but he fought home
- 1:24:39and and still wound up coming like 3rd or 4th.
- 1:24:41So we learned that his freshman year at Eugene his sophomore
- 1:24:46year again, sophomore year in high school, still underclassmen
- 1:24:49in high school, he learned from lane 2 what not to do.
- 1:24:56He came off this the turn in the last and he snatched three
- 1:25:02people on the homestretch. Now again, you're not going to
- 1:25:07snatch 8 or not at that level, but he snatched 3 world class
- 1:25:12runners. So when he gets people in front
- 1:25:14of him, I'm saying just just watch out.
- 1:25:16So for me, how does that relate to relays?
- 1:25:19Well, put a stick in his hand and watch what he does.
- 1:25:23And and you know, the good news is he's still 16.
- 1:25:25He ain't he's 17 yet, Mike. So we'll have more chance.
- 1:25:30It's crazy. And I'm hopeful that whatever
- 1:25:32position he's in, and we're still, we're team first,
- 1:25:36foremost and always, but whatever position he's in,
- 1:25:39he'll, he's going to help the squad.
- 1:25:42And but I just again, knowing him and understanding this kid,
- 1:25:48he'll, he'll do whatever it takes if there's someone in
- 1:25:51front of him to do what's necessary for his team.
- 1:25:55Earlier we talked about, you know, jokingly that, you know,
- 1:25:59if I were, you know, 15-16 years old, I'd want a gold medal.
- 1:26:02If I don't want any medal, it doesn't matter, you know, I'd be
- 1:26:04walking around everywhere with it.
- 1:26:06I believe it in the Olympics now.
- 1:26:10I think this is a recent change that the coach now gets a medal
- 1:26:14as well, but I don't know if that's in the relays.
- 1:26:16Did you get a gold medal as well?
- 1:26:19Yeah, let me show it to you. Oh, wait, no, Oh, wait.
- 1:26:21I. Was like, Oh my God, I was like
- 1:26:24for you to pull it out of your sister.
- 1:26:25And I'm like, Oh yeah, here he goes.
- 1:26:27I need this Howard University again.
- 1:26:29No, I that's actually the first time I've heard that about a
- 1:26:33coach keeping the metal. I could be wrong, but I, I
- 1:26:36thought I remember hearing that recently that the IOC, yeah,
- 1:26:40IOC, because, you know, I paid, you know, I was like, oh wait,
- 1:26:44the coach is getting like, I was all on this.
- 1:26:45I'm like, I'm on board with this is perfect.
- 1:26:47But I was like, oh, I wonder if that happens in the relay
- 1:26:49though, because, you know, I could be getting some.
- 1:26:51Confusion. No, that would be cool.
- 1:26:52No, and other people have thought that as well.
- 1:26:54I don't know. So we I have another gold
- 1:26:57medalist, but that I did not. I used to coach.
- 1:26:59I don't coach Masai anymore. But you know, Masai got the
- 1:27:02gold. Yeah.
- 1:27:03Awesome. We could do a whole episode on
- 1:27:05that bro, because that would be good for her.
- 1:27:07What? Are the best we've been We spent
- 1:27:10a lot of time together recently, even her very last practice.
- 1:27:13She did it at Bullis right before her her last meet of the
- 1:27:16season. And you know, we we, we did some
- 1:27:19stuff together, but I'm not her coach.
- 1:27:21I want to be clear on that, but we we're very was very good.
- 1:27:28But no, you know, and here's the thing that the metal, first of
- 1:27:32all, by the way, I meant to say this, the metal is 6 lbs.
- 1:27:34You can believe that. Is it really?
- 1:27:3615 lbs yeah, it's wild. So get a 5 LB dumbbell if anyone
- 1:27:41else and then then. Yeah.
- 1:27:43Add something to it and you go around your neck so.
- 1:27:47I I would still wear just just. Absolutely.
- 1:27:49It was 16. Pounds.
- 1:27:52I'd be like, look at this thing. I mean, listen, so the and and
- 1:27:59the cool thing is like, you know, he he doesn't like want it
- 1:28:02around but and know this Messiah, but when they're
- 1:28:05places, everybody wants to see it, so they bring it.
- 1:28:07I think that's cool because they could be like, no, I'm just
- 1:28:10leaving it at home. They're like, no, like they get
- 1:28:12it like when you want an Olympic medal and a gold medal in
- 1:28:15particular, like Olympics are different than respectfully
- 1:28:19anything else in my opinion. Like it's for you, it's for your
- 1:28:23family, it's for your community. But it's also like for like, But
- 1:28:28I love the fact that both of them, wherever they're going,
- 1:28:30whether they're at a Baltimore Ravens game or whether they're
- 1:28:33throwing first pitch out at the Oriole game or whatever,
- 1:28:36whatever they're doing, hanging out with Jay-Z, He did that.
- 1:28:39That really, really. I was a hater then I was like,
- 1:28:42listen right now, buddy, wait. He don't even listen to Jay-Z,
- 1:28:45right? He doesn't know any of his
- 1:28:47songs. He tried to name 1.
- 1:28:48He said. I said we.
- 1:28:50I said name it. Name one song, he said.
- 1:28:53He said run this house. I said, no, it's run this town.
- 1:28:58He's like, yeah, that's what I meant.
- 1:28:59I was like, whatever. No, you lost it right there,
- 1:29:01right? But but no, he's he's doing
- 1:29:04phenomenal stuff and I love it. It couldn't happen to a better
- 1:29:07person. I sang through Messiah.
- 1:29:09Messiah was on the pivot the other day and, you know, just
- 1:29:11really doing some cool stuff. But they're really embracing the
- 1:29:14whole like, hey, this is a celebration for us all.
- 1:29:18How? Are you dealing with that
- 1:29:19mentally? You know, I sit in a very unique
- 1:29:22seat that, you know, I love the athletes.
- 1:29:23I'm so happy for Q and Messiah and all the other Q and all
- 1:29:28those that I mean, it's amazing. I love watching them.
- 1:29:30I really appreciate they do it. But you know, my, my life, my
- 1:29:32passion is the coach. I'm assuming you didn't get to
- 1:29:36meet Jay-Z. You're not on the pivot.
- 1:29:38You're not throwing out the first pitch.
- 1:29:39How are you? Like, I wonder, are you dealing
- 1:29:41with any kind of like post Olympic hangover or, you know, I
- 1:29:47don't want to make light of this word of depression, but it's
- 1:29:49like, I know you. I know you will enough.
- 1:29:51I know you're not like, hey, he is, he is who he is because of
- 1:29:55me. But you are a part of who he is
- 1:29:58and how he's becoming you. You're an important piece, an
- 1:30:01important piece of that puzzle, if you will.
- 1:30:04Are you how, how are you dealing with the, you know, and you are
- 1:30:07busy now. A lot of people are trying for
- 1:30:09your time and media and interviews and things like that.
- 1:30:11And I'm sure you're getting invited to go speak at
- 1:30:13everything and you deserve all that.
- 1:30:15How are you dealing with that? Like he's the star and you're
- 1:30:17the, you are the background, which of course, as a coach,
- 1:30:20that's kind of our, our bend in life anyway as serving leaders.
- 1:30:23So I'm just curious that you made me think about that when
- 1:30:25you're talking about Jay-Z and all these guys.
- 1:30:26How are you handling that well? I think you have to be first of
- 1:30:30all, you have to be comfortable in your own skin, right?
- 1:30:33So, because you got to know who you are and, and, and know, you
- 1:30:39know what role you play and what role you don't.
- 1:30:42And, and my value is not increased or diminished by what
- 1:30:48Quincy does or does not do. You know, just like his is not
- 1:30:52on me like, like this is his time to shine.
- 1:30:55Like he's, he's, he's Michael Jackson now.
- 1:30:59I in this case, I would be Quincy Jones, you know, so.
- 1:31:05Yeah, that that's a great and I'm sure analogy is the right
- 1:31:09word. That's a great example or
- 1:31:11comparison. Comparison.
- 1:31:12Yeah, Yeah. Well, and.
- 1:31:13And again, right. So we do.
- 1:31:14We, we, we, we do this thing together.
- 1:31:16But, you know, Quincy Jones was never on anybody's stage, you
- 1:31:20know, moonwalking and, you know, and but he knew his role.
- 1:31:25And like, and for them to be successful at their apex, they
- 1:31:28had to do things in unison together.
- 1:31:30Yeah, when you have someone who has Michael Jackson status, and
- 1:31:35I'm not saying Quincy does, but trust me, like he can't there a
- 1:31:38lot of he can't go to the store without people stop on them.
- 1:31:40Sometimes he's mobbed. Like there, there's for me.
- 1:31:45How do I handle it? Like I don't, I'm excited for
- 1:31:49him and I I know I'm very comfortable being me.
- 1:31:55Yeah, I don't, I don't I, I don't need to say, oh, oh, you
- 1:31:59know, I'm Quincy Wilson's and he would be.
- 1:32:01I don't need that because that's just like I told the kids all
- 1:32:05the time, like, like track is something that you do, but it
- 1:32:10doesn't solely define who you are.
- 1:32:13So if I say that to them, I got to say the same thing to me.
- 1:32:16Like this doesn't solely define who I am.
- 1:32:19Yeah, that's right. That's right.
- 1:32:21So. High or low, you know, let's,
- 1:32:24let's just stay grounded and, and, and again, you got to be
- 1:32:26comfortable knowing, you know, your, your place and your space
- 1:32:30and, and, and, and in this role, I'm here to help lift him up.
- 1:32:35I'm a lifter. Others have lifted me in the
- 1:32:37past. Let's see one day we'll lift
- 1:32:40others. That's why we talk about that.
- 1:32:42Say, listen, you know, God is giving you this platform, OK?
- 1:32:46And I don't know what he's going, you're going to do it.
- 1:32:47Whatever. Just make sure you, you do good
- 1:32:51in the long term, you know, so and, and again, he's, he's
- 1:32:54already grounded with that. But no, I don't, I don't, I
- 1:32:58don't fall into any of that kind of stuff because I don't because
- 1:33:01again, at the end of the day, I still see this as an athlete
- 1:33:03coach. I see this like him and I, we
- 1:33:06have so many personal times together that I don't care if
- 1:33:10there is cameras on us or if she's me and him with the track
- 1:33:12by ourselves. They, they're that meaningful
- 1:33:15for me. And and that means way more to
- 1:33:17me. It may sound cliche, but I'm OK
- 1:33:19with that. It means way more than the gold
- 1:33:21medal. I did the world's most boring
- 1:33:25podcast last week where I literally with, with the help of
- 1:33:31a of a another, another coach did David David Burnett did all
- 1:33:35the work and then I just took his work and and copied it with
- 1:33:38his permission. But we, I, I literally got on
- 1:33:41the mic normally have great guests like you on the show, but
- 1:33:44it was literally just me. So it was a solo podcast that we
- 1:33:46did last week and I read, you know, of course, I forget
- 1:33:52everybody's names now. Oh my God, Noah Lyles.
- 1:33:55He, he was coached by Lance Brahman.
- 1:33:57Good job, Lance. And then silver medal Brahman.
- 1:33:59And I did it for every event, individual event.
- 1:34:03You know, there's a lot of international names.
- 1:34:05I just, you know, again, Jolie, why can't everybody's name just
- 1:34:08be as easy as Jolie? I always appreciate that.
- 1:34:10But I started over. But I did that because I want
- 1:34:14you guys and gals in the Track World to be similar.
- 1:34:20Ask if not more than we know a Nick Saban, we know a Bill
- 1:34:24Belichick, we know a John Wooden, we know a Phil Jackson.
- 1:34:27We like those coaches have done such a phenomenal job.
- 1:34:31We know when I say Phil Jackson, you immediately, Oh, Yep, Bulls,
- 1:34:34whatever, like Bill Belichick, you automatically think
- 1:34:37Patriots. That's what I want for Jolie.
- 1:34:39It's what I want for Lance Brahm.
- 1:34:40It's one of her Dennis. That's why like when I watch the
- 1:34:42Sprint series on Netflix, like it was cool see you knowing all
- 1:34:45those guys and gals, like it was really cool.
- 1:34:47Cool to see the background of what they do to prepare for when
- 1:34:50the lights turn on. But when they showed Dennis and
- 1:34:52when they showed Lance, I mean, I was like, oh, like that was my
- 1:34:57starstruck. Like that's my guys.
- 1:34:58Like that's so cool that they're getting camera time.
- 1:35:00That's what I deserve. So I I just, you know, always
- 1:35:03want to pour gas on what you guys are doing and what you what
- 1:35:06you're doing here. Last two questions here, Joe,
- 1:35:09One is and you you answer this. But when I asked this question,
- 1:35:14I'm going to, I'm going to talk more, more bigger picture.
- 1:35:19So the question is, looking back, would you do anything
- 1:35:21differently? You already said no, I wouldn't.
- 1:35:24But what I, what I mean when I ask that question is all the way
- 1:35:26from go back to the trials. Would you not have run them at
- 1:35:31Florida? Would you?
- 1:35:32I think there was another meet somewhere too that you could
- 1:35:34have run. Would you have run them in that?
- 1:35:36Would you go earlier to Paris? Would you go later to like like
- 1:35:41globally, the whole thing that you did?
- 1:35:43Is there anything that you would do differently?
- 1:35:47You know, I don't think so. I, I think Florida for us was,
- 1:35:52it was more of a, a confirmation that this kid is for real and
- 1:35:58he's here to stay, right. And you know, I, I don't, you
- 1:36:06know, and, and we could have there, there was actually 2
- 1:36:09meets we could have went to, we could have went to done
- 1:36:10something overseas like at London or something like that.
- 1:36:14It was actually a meet the very next day.
- 1:36:16So I say when he ran it, he ran the 4420, he was #8 in the
- 1:36:21world. And then Vernon, that doggone
- 1:36:24Vernon Norwood saw that he ran 44 one.
- 1:36:27So and we're texting backwards like, I'm like, I know what
- 1:36:31you're doing. I knew you saw it.
- 1:36:32I knew you saw it. He's like, yeah, you know what I
- 1:36:33did. So Vernon's awesome, all those
- 1:36:36guys. I mean, listen, we had such a
- 1:36:39great time. We had such a great time.
- 1:36:42I mean, you would, you could not believe.
- 1:36:45And I believe their lifelong bonds are created.
- 1:36:47And even when those guys are winning medals, you know, we're
- 1:36:50coming up like, 'cause I don't really see this on camera on TV.
- 1:36:54But when, when they do their, their victory laps, you know,
- 1:37:00you're waving at people and all that kind of stuff.
- 1:37:02But the athletes are always looking for somebody they know
- 1:37:06because it's, it's it's natural. You know, it's, it's wonderful.
- 1:37:09You got fans and stuff. But, you know, you can say this
- 1:37:12in the NBA, you know, they, they see somebody they know it's just
- 1:37:15a different experience. So haven't got to know a lot of
- 1:37:18them and see them. And then they say, I'm, I'm
- 1:37:21like, yeah, good job. And he comes over to the stands.
- 1:37:25Stop and hug me and take a picture.
- 1:37:28You know, we do a selfie together and then people look at
- 1:37:30me like, oh, is that your friend or, you know, same thing.
- 1:37:35Bryce did the same thing. Bryce dead man and and and and
- 1:37:38and and Chris Bailey like, like those are they're really great
- 1:37:41guys, man. And you know the ladies to
- 1:37:44Tara's phenomenal. Tara's first of all, so I know
- 1:37:47you you do the coaching thing, but Tara Davis is when all is
- 1:37:50hilarious as ever. Like I don't people think she's
- 1:37:54doing this stuff for social media because she's just a ball
- 1:37:57of energy, but she is. Let me tell you that she's
- 1:38:01phenomenal And and Sidney McLaughlin Lebroni, she's as
- 1:38:07advertised to, she's humbled and kind and but she's also got a
- 1:38:10fun side to it. Like so being able to see them
- 1:38:14with their, you know, hair down, so to speak, and just, you know,
- 1:38:17just not having to worry about, you know, being on was was fun
- 1:38:22for me. And but again, in terms of what
- 1:38:25I would do differently, I really can't say anything because this
- 1:38:29was really a dream season, dream meeting, not like, oh, we'd ever
- 1:38:33thought we could, But meaning everything worked out, even when
- 1:38:37it didn't work out. I believe in having a plan
- 1:38:40behind the plane, behind the plane, right.
- 1:38:42So what happened? You know, like Mike Tyson says,
- 1:38:44you know, everybody's got a plan to be a punch in the mouth.
- 1:38:47So we plan for that. All right, OK, what's going to
- 1:38:50happen if this happens? What's going to happen if that
- 1:38:52happens? You know, we, we, I'm talking
- 1:38:53about my my coaching staff and I, you know, coach Derrick,
- 1:38:56coach Dave Coursera, we have, you know, we have like 25
- 1:39:00coaches on our staff. So more of so proves that I'm
- 1:39:04not the genius and they're all they're all amazing.
- 1:39:08But yeah, I guess the only thing I would probably do different
- 1:39:15and you hear this sometimes and I I'm kind of susceptible for
- 1:39:20myself. I probably just have maybe just
- 1:39:22soaked in the moment a little bit more because you'd never
- 1:39:26know when you're going to get it again because I wasn't gay.
- 1:39:29I'm gay. Look, I'm like, yeah, this is
- 1:39:31nice, 80,000 people, but let's go.
- 1:39:34And that's not just for me. I'm like, let's go for Team USA.
- 1:39:36And I met some great, you know, people over there.
- 1:39:39Just I, I made some really good friends and bonds with some
- 1:39:42people on that side too. So we're cheering for each
- 1:39:44other, cheering for, you know, this athlete, that athlete, but
- 1:39:48just kind of like soaking in like, yo-yo, you know, you're at
- 1:39:51the Olympic Games, right? So I probably would have done a
- 1:39:55little bit more of that. But as far as as a coach for
- 1:39:57him, you know, maybe you know, I don't know.
- 1:40:03I told a few more jokes. I don't know.
- 1:40:04I mean, like I'm not joke around all the time.
- 1:40:06It's probably no. I can't say I would have done
- 1:40:08anything different because it it it worked out the way it was
- 1:40:13supposed to be. Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 1:40:15Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:40:15I like that, soaking it in because, you know, I do think
- 1:40:18and I do hope that for you and for Quincy, no matter how the
- 1:40:23future moves forward, right. You know, I don't want
- 1:40:26necessarily say you won't be as coached forever, but who knows
- 1:40:28that, you know, maybe you are. It doesn't matter, but you're
- 1:40:32right, nothing is guaranteed and we talked about it from the get
- 1:40:34go. You're not given anything,
- 1:40:36you're not expected anything. This could be the first and last
- 1:40:42Olympics for you as a coach, Joe.
- 1:40:44So I always want like make sure like, OK, I look back very fine.
- 1:40:47I didn't miss out on things. But you're there to do a job as
- 1:40:50well. And I think you you guys
- 1:40:52definitely got the job done through a lot of circumstances.
- 1:40:55And I'm OK with that too. Yeah, right.
- 1:40:57I'm OK with that because that's not why I coach.
- 1:40:59Like, you don't coach. So you can go to the Olympics,
- 1:41:02right? Right.
- 1:41:03You coach or you can make a difference.
- 1:41:05Yeah, make an impact, right? Like, like, like, so that's why
- 1:41:10maybe that's why I didn't sit there and just kind of like soak
- 1:41:13it up without taking selfies and having fun and doing.
- 1:41:16Yeah, I was doing that. Like my biggest thing was like I
- 1:41:19was trying to take selfies with as many different fans from
- 1:41:23different countries as I possibly could.
- 1:41:26And I will give you a one ridiculous but funny 1.
- 1:41:29So some of my close friends know this and family members know
- 1:41:31this, but there's a this is breaking news.
- 1:41:35As if anyone would be interested.
- 1:41:39I apparently I have a twin out there.
- 1:41:41There's a French rapper, yeah, named Booba.
- 1:41:47Booba. Yeah, he's a French rapper.
- 1:41:49And when I get to my hotel, there's already a language
- 1:41:52barrier and the, the, the guy's there stares at me, stares at me
- 1:41:57and he, he's, he walks, he, he just walks away like, is my room
- 1:42:01not ready? What's going on?
- 1:42:02He goes to get his, his, his Co worker.
- 1:42:06They're they're talking French. I took French in high school,
- 1:42:08but I'm terrible at it. They're talking like what's
- 1:42:11going on? Is everything OK?
- 1:42:12Do you not have my room? Because if not, I got a problem
- 1:42:15because I can't call my homies up the street to, you know, let
- 1:42:18me, let me crash at your crib. And he says booba.
- 1:42:23I'm like, I'm sorry, I don't speak French.
- 1:42:25No booba, booba. And then he picks up his phone
- 1:42:28and he shows me a picture of booba.
- 1:42:30And he's like, you know, I was like, oh, they're like, yeah.
- 1:42:33And I had my sunglass. I normally wear, you know,
- 1:42:35sunglasses when I'm outside. And I was going outside in
- 1:42:38there. So I have my hat on, my Yankee
- 1:42:39hat. And so apparently this guy's is
- 1:42:43my twin. So every now and then people
- 1:42:45would come up to me asking me for photos.
- 1:42:48Is that right? Oh, it was crazy.
- 1:42:50It was hilarious. That's funny.
- 1:42:52The last day. This one.
- 1:42:53This one girl, she says, Oh my God, I'm.
- 1:42:56I'm so previous to meet you. I'm like, yeah, you're
- 1:42:58privileged to meet Coach Jolie, Huh?
- 1:43:00She I didn't say that. So she's like, oh, I'm so
- 1:43:04nervous right now. So I was like, she thinks I.
- 1:43:08You like, trust me. Don't be nervous.
- 1:43:10Exactly. It's really not a big deal.
- 1:43:12So I actually I actually. I actually heard that story
- 1:43:17about that and you so kind of insider.
- 1:43:20You don't know that I know this, that someone told me this story
- 1:43:22that one night you actually tried to front like you were
- 1:43:25him. But then someone came up and
- 1:43:27said, Hey, spit or Ryan let me hear it.
- 1:43:29And he was like, I just kidding, man.
- 1:43:30All right, I'm out. I'm out.
- 1:43:31I'm just kidding. I'm kidding.
- 1:43:33You called me. I was like.
- 1:43:35I know I saw your face. I'm like, oh, I got all this.
- 1:43:37What? The hell was Jay-Z versus?
- 1:43:39I was like, oh, I'm in trouble, I'm out, I'm out.
- 1:43:41Abort, abort. Yeah, yeah, it didn't.
- 1:43:44It didn't go very far. But no, it was fun, man.
- 1:43:47I mean, that's cool. That was my fun stuff, just.
- 1:43:49That's cool. People and the camaraderie and
- 1:43:51seeing the different nations, that's one thing special about
- 1:43:53the Olympics, Mike, the just seeing the nations come
- 1:43:56together, it's not about anything else.
- 1:43:58It's not about, you know, territory.
- 1:44:01It's not about politics, it's not about religion.
- 1:44:03It's just everybody coming together.
- 1:44:04And we've been like, this is a fun time.
- 1:44:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's cool.
- 1:44:10I love it. Well, Joe, wrap us up.
- 1:44:12You know, this is a unique experience.
- 1:44:14I don't have the experience of interviewing a high school coach
- 1:44:17who qualifies athletes Olympics either.
- 1:44:19What did I miss? What what what?
- 1:44:21You know, we've done this enough times.
- 1:44:22You know, we have a lot of understanding what kind of
- 1:44:25questions and style that I have. What's something you thought I
- 1:44:28might ask or what's something that you wanted a story to tell?
- 1:44:31Besides the booba story, of course.
- 1:44:32I know you really wanted to get that one out there.
- 1:44:33What's something that we that I might have missed here today?
- 1:44:39Not, you know, we, you know how our time goes.
- 1:44:41It just flies. I mean, we, we, we.
- 1:44:42This is probably what is coming up on two hours or.
- 1:44:45Something. Yeah, it's close, yeah.
- 1:44:46So, you know, I, I, I just, well, two things.
- 1:44:53I think 1, I don't want the narrative to be like, you know,
- 1:44:57it's US versus them because it's all us.
- 1:45:00Again, we can agree to disagree, but at the end of the day, we're
- 1:45:03all in this thing together, coaches, the athletes, the the
- 1:45:08meet directors, the the agents, the shoe companies, the parent
- 1:45:14like we're like, let's we're all together.
- 1:45:16We don't always have to agree, but if we're all working for the
- 1:45:18betterment of the athlete first, which ultimately is the
- 1:45:23betterment of the sport, I believe we're all we're all
- 1:45:25going to be it. It's going to work out.
- 1:45:27I really hope everybody that I just named keeps that in mind.
- 1:45:31You know that we're we're this we have to be athlete first,
- 1:45:34right? That means others before myself.
- 1:45:39I think, you know, the only thing we didn't cover is, you
- 1:45:41know, the future, what's going to happen in the future.
- 1:45:45And I'll say this. Stay tuned.
- 1:45:47Stay tuned. I think that's your way of
- 1:45:50trying to get a fourth episode. And you know, we know each other
- 1:45:54well enough, Joe, you ain't got to do that kind of stuff to get
- 1:45:56for you. Go get a fourth episode, man.
- 1:45:58We're fine. We go.
- 1:45:58We go, we go. I'm saying stay tuned because of
- 1:46:01this. We got the same.
- 1:46:06I, I, I put it on on social media, not just for Quincy, just
- 1:46:09for all my kids. We're just getting started.
- 1:46:14We had some success. We're just getting started.
- 1:46:18So with, with our, our high school team.
- 1:46:21My I believe this, if we do our job, like I said before, this
- 1:46:24could be and others have to say it, but I'm biased.
- 1:46:28I believe this could be one of the best, whoever did it on the
- 1:46:30boys and the girls side, but we'll have to see.
- 1:46:32So stay tuned the as far as an individual, we have some
- 1:46:36individual goals on the boys and the girls side that can
- 1:46:40literally like rewrite some record books, you know, stay
- 1:46:43tuned. With Quincy in particular, we're
- 1:46:47we're, we're, we have some different ideas of some
- 1:46:50different events that we're looking at.
- 1:46:52And there it's going to be excite.
- 1:46:55We are going to do some different events as you, I won't
- 1:46:57say what they are. So maybe we do come back for 1/4
- 1:46:59and we can unpack some of them and one will be a big surprise
- 1:47:05or maybe a big surprise. But we're not abandoning, we're
- 1:47:10not abandoning the baby. And that's the quarter.
- 1:47:13And trust me, we learned a lot from everything that happened
- 1:47:18this year. And we don't, we don't make the
- 1:47:21same mistakes twice or not any mistakes.
- 1:47:23They didn't make any mistakes this year.
- 1:47:24We we learn our lessons and and they they do not, we do not
- 1:47:33allowed we I'll say this the best way we learned those
- 1:47:37lessons that we don't forget the details.
- 1:47:40So when you see him next, we're just getting started.
- 1:47:45Well, you know, as a big hurdles fan, it's so cool to hear that
- 1:47:48Quincy's going to do the 110 high hurdles this year because
- 1:47:51that would be the event. I have no way of of seeing her.
- 1:47:53I can't wait. Please let him know that today
- 1:47:56that that that's that's what I announced today for him.
- 1:48:00And I'm just so excited. I cannot wait for that to see
- 1:48:03that. You know, I don't put anything
- 1:48:05past him and you guys working together.
- 1:48:06So when you say that, I'm like, literally, I'm like, I can't
- 1:48:09even tell you what have been there.
- 1:48:10Some obvious ones maybe, but I'm like, yeah, those two guys.
- 1:48:14I don't know that I wouldn't put the past what you guys are
- 1:48:16cooking out there. So it's cool to see that.
- 1:48:18So Joe, man, thank you so much. You know, I always enjoy our
- 1:48:21time together. It's really neat.
- 1:48:24I think this is a unique opportunity for other coaches to
- 1:48:26kind of, you know, feel back that curtain and see other sides
- 1:48:30to our sport and our and our profession as coaching.
- 1:48:32So it's always cool to to see and learn from your experience,
- 1:48:35what you're what you're going through and learning and and
- 1:48:37growing from. Well, we get to kind of come
- 1:48:39alongside and learn those things as well as coaches that are out
- 1:48:42there. So it's really cool.
- 1:48:43And I'm always grateful for you know, you are anything if you
- 1:48:47aren't authentic and open man, and I'm just always grateful for
- 1:48:50that. That's really I'm just very
- 1:48:52humbled by you, my friend. Well, I appreciate it, man.
- 1:48:55You make it easy, man. You make it easy, Mike.
- 1:48:57See, listen, I can do this all day and I appreciate just how
- 1:49:00you cover the sport and and help us coaches to get our voice out
- 1:49:06there as well. Man, That's that's pretty dope.
- 1:49:07Absolutely love you brother. Guys, thank you so much for
- 1:49:10being here. You know I'm going to leave.
- 1:49:12I'm going to sign off this week with hey, join us next week and
- 1:49:15just stay tuned. Stay tuned what we got going
- 1:49:17here at the Guild Connection podcast.
- 1:49:20Thanks guys. See you later.
- 1:49:22And the goals to appreciate the coach the ones that point people
- 1:49:24most every season needs a voice of reason speaking the growth
- 1:49:28you got to prep before you carry the load ice coffee to the soul.
