- 3:12We'll put the link in the chat and moments on the Moray.
- 3:16It is Monday. Y'all, we, we, we all had some
- 3:18conflicting things going on between things outside, then
- 3:23normal work, then baseball and other crap.
- 3:27So we are on a Monday night. How's everybody doing?
- 3:33Man, it's it's been a little bit of overcast, a little rainy, a
- 3:37little windy the last couple days hadn't been able to get
- 3:40outside like I quite wanted to. But I think things are shaping
- 3:44up a little bit better tomorrow. We'll see how it goes, but I'm
- 3:47excited to be here tonight. Excited to see what what some of
- 3:50the fans out there have to say about this head coaching
- 3:53situation as we break that down. But obviously we got to we got
- 3:56to tell the truth about Georgia Tech first, guys.
- 4:00No, we really don't have to tell the truth about.
- 4:02We can skip it. We already know what the truth
- 4:06is. I am excited to hear what
- 4:09everybody has to say. Not that it's going to make a
- 4:12difference. We just talking.
- 4:14I mean, they're going to do what they want to do anyway.
- 4:16But I'm excited to hear what everybody has to say about the
- 4:19coaching because there has been a lot of keyboarding about
- 4:24tweets and who should and who shouldn't.
- 4:26And that's a dumb idea. So you do have your opportunity
- 4:30today to come on and let us know why it is a good idea or why it
- 4:36isn't a good idea to hire Blank shelter.
- 4:41How are you buddy? I'm good, man.
- 4:44I've been been very busy, but, you know, still, still getting
- 4:48on the hoagies. I was at a wedding on Saturday.
- 4:50So, you know, I didn't, I didn't watch the game, obviously, but
- 4:53it was kind of nice to sort of, you know, get away from football
- 4:56and especially with the way the season's been going, just kind
- 4:58of, you know, get away from it and be with be with my friends
- 5:00and all that good stuff. So I'm, I'm a happy guy.
- 5:03Yeah. Saturday I watched the first
- 5:05quarter and then one of my wife's colleague lives out up in
- 5:09Montpelier. If everybody knows where that
- 5:11is, a little southeastern, southwestern Hanover County, not
- 5:16a nice little spread. They do a huge camp out every
- 5:19year, like in their backyard. They got about let's say about 3
- 5:22acres. So they have people camp out,
- 5:25party, drinking. They had a pizza, a pizza truck
- 5:28there just making stonefire pizzas.
- 5:32So had some beers, shout out Ryan, fellow hokey there got to
- 5:37chat with him all about it and some of the other stuff going
- 5:41on. One of my wife's colleagues,
- 5:42husband's graduate 19901990 so old school he said we sucked
- 5:48when we were in football there. Looks like it hadn't changed
- 5:51much, but in reality it had. And you know, he talked about
- 5:55going I mean, yeah, he was straight up he said I went to
- 5:57the the I went to the national championship at Sugar Bowl.
- 5:59He had one of his best friends. I went to Tulane and stayed in
- 6:02New Orleans. So it was also me and him share
- 6:05stories back and forth. Really cool.
- 6:06But Tally, we do got to tell the truth first.
- 6:09Then we're going to get one other piece of news and then we
- 6:12are going to open it up to everybody.
- 6:16So I'm going to put that in the chat in just a few minutes.
- 6:19But let's talk about Saturday afternoon.
- 6:21I watch the 1st for it and watch the rest of it on Sunday
- 6:25morning. And and I'm going to say this
- 6:28and it's I think Tally, you mentioned it last week, Philip
- 6:32Montgomery has yet to lose this team.
- 6:34They are not quitting. They are playing extremely hard.
- 6:38That's one of the things that went well on Saturday.
- 6:42Like because it I mean, after, after that start in that first
- 6:44quarter, I mean that game could have been like 42 nothing and it
- 6:49wouldn't have dropped anybody on this.
- 6:52Yeah, I mean, you had, you know, you got punched in the mouth
- 6:55real quick on defense. You had your your quarterback
- 6:59getting nicked up pretty early, you know, late in the late in
- 7:03the early drive. And I think there was a lot of
- 7:05opportunities for the wheels to completely fall off of that
- 7:07game. And they didn't to the point
- 7:10where, you know, late in the second-half you're you're
- 7:14potentially driving to make it a one score game and you know, get
- 7:17get into a situation where you can maybe let your defense get
- 7:20the ball back and see what the hell happens.
- 7:22But unfortunately, that's not how it played out.
- 7:24The the Yellow Jackets ended up still hanging on to the cover
- 7:29because of the decision to go for two for whatever reason.
- 7:32But you know what, I did like the fight.
- 7:37They they definitely did not quit and they they fought hard
- 7:40to the end despite really getting kind of controlled and
- 7:44handled for four quarters. Yeah, it was.
- 7:48What was that about, Wow? What was going on in the game?
- 7:53You. Talking about the two.
- 7:54Points. Yeah, they're going for two.
- 7:59I think I think they were just trying to I think they were
- 8:02trying to hit the kill shot early.
- 8:03Like they felt like if they got a touchdown in two, we were
- 8:06going to be dead. I think us going for the two
- 8:08tally. I think Montgomery knew the
- 8:11defense was going to give up more and he was trying to steal
- 8:14a couple points because my. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:18I, I kind of what you guys have already been talking about, I
- 8:21mean, when you say what went well, I just, I can't say enough
- 8:25about the kids just playing like just not giving up, you know,
- 8:29going into games kind of knowing what the situation is.
- 8:34And again, every fan, you know, man, we could have won that.
- 8:37We, we should have, what did this?
- 8:38We could have did this different.
- 8:39Like we're down kids, you know what I'm saying?
- 8:42We're down a lot of players, me and kids, whatever we call them.
- 8:46Not an excuse, but it's just we have fired a coach.
- 8:50People's hit the portal, people's hurt.
- 8:52You know, I think we are 5 defensive starters down maybe,
- 8:59maybe 6-7 in the 2 deep that we thought would be contributing,
- 9:03not playing. Some things like that, man.
- 9:05It's kind of taking a toll on what we're doing.
- 9:08We'll get into what didn't go well, you know, But when we talk
- 9:11about what went well, I will continue to say that they're
- 9:15fighting, they're not giving up. They're at least competing in
- 9:19these games and not just taking a 42 to 0 beating because
- 9:25against Old Dominion we gave up and it was bad.
- 9:28So I haven't seen, I haven't seen too much of that going on
- 9:33in these games. So shout out to the to the guys
- 9:36out there playing. Shelton yeah, I mean, you know,
- 9:43obviously I didn't watch, I watched the condensed game.
- 9:44I I look this sad, so don't act like I know what I'm talking
- 9:46about, but it's it certainly seemed like, you know, we did a
- 9:50lot of good things in the run game.
- 9:52I mean, look at our success rates.
- 9:53I think we had like 6.8 yards per rush and that includes sacks
- 9:56as well. So that was good.
- 9:58But you know, we kind of got gashed on the D line.
- 10:00So and I kind of mixed bag. I mean, we just, you know, lost
- 10:04to a better team. We're talented team.
- 10:06They're top 15 team in the country for a reason.
- 10:07So I don't know, kind of just take your lumps and move on.
- 10:10Yeah, I'll, I'll say one other thing because you talk about the
- 10:13run game. We're showing now that they're I
- 10:16think we're more fully versed in Monty system now, like some of
- 10:20the wide receivers are getting to show out like Heath and Green
- 10:25have shown showed out on Saturday.
- 10:28You mentioned already the rush and Hawkins had a really good
- 10:31game. So there is, it's not like the
- 10:33cupboard is completely bare, at least on offense, the defense.
- 10:36It's just it feels like it's getting less and less every
- 10:39week. And, and, and I don't, I don't
- 10:42know if that matters or not for next year, but there are some
- 10:46kids that you could see someone walking in and saying like, now
- 10:48you can't leave. You are going to be my number
- 10:51one guy. So there's what I can go with.
- 10:56Let's go to what was bad And the the start was just brutal.
- 11:03I mean, they just deal with they wanted the first two drives.
- 11:06It wasn't even a question. And that sucked.
- 11:11These are things that happen when you cannot get a pass rush
- 11:14and like 3 of your best cover guys are either injured or in
- 11:18the portal. Yeah, yeah, very true.
- 11:25I mean, it's just so much to say and not say, but like, like
- 11:31Brian just alluded to, when you can't get home and you got
- 11:38people in the portal that's supposed to be playing or hurt,
- 11:42it's hard to it's hard to to make plays and make stuff happen
- 11:46now. But I will say you can kind of
- 11:49control that. We did not do a good job of I'll
- 11:53leave it to the chat. I'll leave it to you guys.
- 11:57We had some bull crap going on with these referees not saying
- 12:01this. Is the reason.
- 12:01We lost, but the undisciplined crap that's just uncalled for,
- 12:08you know, all of the false starts and jumping off sides and
- 12:13you know, penalties. They they started that game and
- 12:16said we want Georgia Tech to win.
- 12:20Let's. Find a way to win.
- 12:23I mean for real and. It was, it was clear the one
- 12:26play that it was clear on the holes and stuff.
- 12:28Like we all know that's ticky tack.
- 12:30Some of them are obvious, like you didn't call it, but the key
- 12:33hit that was clear that he hit him out of bounds and then he
- 12:38targeted and then he just. I think the one that got me the
- 12:44most out of the, not the most, but one of the calls, I think it
- 12:46may have been on one of the long runs.
- 12:48I know it was on one of the long runs that they had, but I can't
- 12:51remember who it was or where we was at.
- 12:54But somebody was in the backfield.
- 12:55I think it was Spencer and the guy like grabbed him by his
- 12:59shoulder pass and tried to tackle it like he was running
- 13:02the ball and it was no holding call in the I mean, right in
- 13:06front of the ref. And I'm just like, well, that's
- 13:08what happens when you're a losing team, You know, you not
- 13:11don't get that call. So all kinds of holes.
- 13:15You know, that is what it is. So I digress.
- 13:19Yeah, it's one of those things where you know you're already
- 13:23going into a hostile environment, so you're going to
- 13:25get some home cooking anyway. They're the ranked team.
- 13:29So whether obvious or not, there's probably going to be
- 13:33some, some inherent there. It's just, it's one of those
- 13:36things where I, I think the ACC officiating overall has been his
- 13:41poor, regardless of whether Virginia Tech's in a factor
- 13:44here. This goes back for many years
- 13:48and was probably most apparent last year, but I think is is is
- 13:51rearing its ugly head again this year.
- 13:53So the officiating, the ACC in general is just awful in the in,
- 13:58you know, in this case, I think Virginia Tech was on the wrong
- 14:00side of most of the calls on Saturday.
- 14:02Not that it impacted the outcome of the game, but it certainly
- 14:05was a frustrating thing to deal with through the course of it.
- 14:09And we got Tenacious B in the chat.
- 14:11Put up his put up his his his troll there.
- 14:15Oh tenacious B Thank you buddy for coming to the chat and and
- 14:18and letting us know this man. It hurt our feelings so bad.
- 14:21We don't fucking care. We already know this dude.
- 14:24If you listen to what we saying, we didn't say we lost because of
- 14:27the rails. We said we lost because we ain't
- 14:29got no fucking coach. Half of our team is in the
- 14:32portal and we played a top 15 team.
- 14:35That ain't that great to be honest with you.
- 14:37When y'all play somebody who's worth a shit, you going to
- 14:40fucking lose too to be honest with you.
- 14:42So come on man, we here for the trolling.
- 14:46We like it. We know what we get.
- 14:50We also. Need people to listen right?
- 14:52I'm. Glad you.
- 14:53I'm glad you're feeling good. I'm glad you're feeling good.
- 14:56I'm glad your team or maybe not your team or your brother in We
- 15:08know what we are, my friend. So hey, thank you for joining
- 15:12the show. If you can find a coach to help
- 15:15us not be asked, we're going to put up a link here in just a
- 15:17little bit and you can come on here and tell us how asked we
- 15:21are or how a coach can help us not be asked.
- 15:24Thank you to Nation's beat. Sorry, I'll.
- 15:28Go oh man. All right.
- 15:31The other thing also the what went bad?
- 15:35I want to talk about this one because this did set up their
- 15:38second touchdown. How the hell are you going to do
- 15:43the opposite punt thing? And no motherfucking body on the
- 15:47special teams understand where they supposed to go.
- 15:50No two people understood, just the rest of the fucking.
- 15:52Team Well 2 * 11 team. Did you see that place even?
- 15:59Even the cameraman didn't know where the ball was at, no.
- 16:03He didn't because because half our teams run in the other
- 16:06direction, They're following, they're following the coverage
- 16:09unit, they're not following the ball.
- 16:11How do you not locate the ball? How do you not know where to
- 16:14ball? I don't know man.
- 16:17Now that was. Like.
- 16:23That, that was just that one play and I'm sitting here
- 16:27watching it and they don't say, oh, oh, they kicked it opposite.
- 16:30Oh no, exactly. There's nobody up there to
- 16:31actually tackle. No, I mean, that's a, that's a
- 16:38good, that's a good assessment. That's what it's Wits fault.
- 16:42It's all with everything we've. Got with.
- 16:45All right, last piece I got to say is my man Tally texted me
- 16:49Tally the unnecessary sacks because Tally is texting just F
- 16:53bombs off the hand. Just like throw the ball away,
- 16:56don't take the sack power, don't take unnecessary.
- 17:00You get out of the when you get out of the and Kyra is my guy.
- 17:03I got Kyra's shirt on right now. Shout out to Kyra when you get
- 17:07out of the tackle box, just throw it away.
- 17:11Don't give them a sack to get them hyped up at the beginning
- 17:13of the game. So I don't know, man, Just no
- 17:16situational awareness. Is it any coaching on the
- 17:21sideline when we do stupid shit? I don't know, you know, I don't
- 17:25know what's going on, but I know he.
- 17:26Almost got rid of that one where he went to Mahomes full full
- 17:30horizontal but he couldn't quite get it to the line of scrimmage
- 17:34just about. Any anything else that what went
- 17:40bad, it stuck out. I'm trying to roll through it.
- 17:46We saw I. Mean the big, the big one was
- 17:47just, you know, Haynes King being unstoppable.
- 17:49And again, I already kind of talked about a little bit, I
- 17:51mean, when you can't rush the passer because you're missing
- 17:54what, three of your, your, your, your top pass rushers at this
- 17:57point. And then you, you roll back and
- 17:59you got three of your best cover guys out for one reason or
- 18:02another, it's going to take a toll on you.
- 18:04And we're starting to see quarterback efficiency go way
- 18:08the fuck up against us. And that's that's the reason why
- 18:11when a, when a quarterback has time and you can't cover for
- 18:14very long, they're going to complete a lot of fucking passes
- 18:17and. He did, yeah.
- 18:19And I'll also say, I'll also say I got the set wrong.
- 18:22Our our yards per rush was 6.7 adjusted for sacks, 5.5 just,
- 18:26you know, regular because for some reason college still
- 18:29includes sack yards and rushes. But 6.4 yards rush allowed, that
- 18:34is not good. And, and from what I saw in the
- 18:36condensed game, we were just getting bulldozed in the
- 18:38interior, just, you know, take taken out of the play, you know,
- 18:42cut out. So that was not, that was not
- 18:44good. Yeah, yeah. 6.4, yeah. 6.4.
- 18:49They went almost 500 total yards, not good at all.
- 18:53And, and here's what I'll say is and, and, and I don't know if
- 18:56we're going to put this bid bad or indifferent.
- 18:58We'll, we'll kind of start closing it out here.
- 19:01I got really tell them you got to tell me a website that counts
- 19:04it better because me going through the thing and being like
- 19:07123, we were in 24 plays in the first half, 2424 plays, not
- 19:16counting punts, kickoff returns, a 24 offensive place and we
- 19:19split it down the middle pass to rushing.
- 19:23Yeah, we're not going to win a lot of games if you go ass
- 19:27backwards with what you do. Well, because I think with the
- 19:30Doug Bowman the day had the stat like we were one of the best
- 19:33rushing teams, like what, 25th in the country with efficiency
- 19:37showed. You might have saw that or you
- 19:38might have had that and we're like 125 when passing.
- 19:42We can't come out here and just we're going, we're going, we're
- 19:45going to pass the ball halftime, we're going to run the ball
- 19:47halftime. No, you cannot do that.
- 19:51And and some people say, well, we got down 15 for the 2
- 19:55gentlemen, 2 guy on on the other side of the screen both played
- 20:00most of the time when the offense, even if you get down a
- 20:02couple scores, are you going to completely go away from what you
- 20:05do best? It's like we're down to if we
- 20:07score a touchdown to 1 possession game.
- 20:09I didn't get that and it frustrated me.
- 20:12It don't matter. If we do.
- 20:16It's OK to, you know, like you said, you go away from what you
- 20:18do well, and then not only do you go away from what you do
- 20:21well, you go to something that you do horrible.
- 20:25We ain't no fucking passing team.
- 20:27We ain't doing good at it. I think we may have had
- 20:31something ridiculous for the last two weeks. 35 yards one
- 20:34week in passing, maybe 50 yards another week in passing, going
- 20:38in the halftime, but not a passing team.
- 20:41I said before the yeah, I said before the game, you got to you
- 20:45got to do what Hans Keane does. You got to you got to use him
- 20:47like that. You got to run the ball.
- 20:49And I mean, Kyrie did a good job of running the ball.
- 20:52He did a good job of it's not too many people that really want
- 20:55to hit him when you when you put him, you know, in the get him to
- 20:58the secondary, if you can give him a hold to get through.
- 21:00And then you pairing him with Hawkins and little bit of
- 21:04Stuart. I think Stuart's still dealing
- 21:06with some some injury type stuff.
- 21:08But whatever the case is, I mean, we got people that's in
- 21:10there running hard. When we get opportunity one time
- 21:12we start driving the ball down the field and then what do we
- 21:15do? We start fucking passing it and
- 21:16throw a pick. What do you got to pass it for?
- 21:19Running it just fine. Like he's getting like 7 yards
- 21:22of carry that that that that drive.
- 21:26So I don't know, man. I understand coaches are
- 21:30stubborn a lot of times and want to be like this is what my
- 21:33offense does, but this team can't run that offense so switch
- 21:38it up and try to win a game. Yeah.
- 21:41At some point you got to lean on your strengths and play with the
- 21:43strengths of the personnel that you have.
- 21:44And when you look at the personnel that we have right
- 21:46now, you know, we we've got some good wide outs that I think you
- 21:49want to try to get the ball to. But at the same time the
- 21:52strength of your quarterback is not dropping back and throwing
- 21:55down the field. The strength of your quarterback
- 21:57is giving the ball off, using him in the running game, working
- 22:02in some shots or, or some stuff. I'll play action that gives him
- 22:05the opportunity to really kind of survey and, and, and get a
- 22:07really good look at the field and not have to just have a
- 22:10straight drop back and have to get to his third read in his
- 22:13progression to get a completion. That's not that's never going to
- 22:17be coverage strength. So I think we definitely need to
- 22:20lean on that running game as much as we can going forward.
- 22:22And it was. It was frustrating at times to
- 22:24watch because when we did finally commit to it the way I
- 22:26thought we should, we saw some success.
- 22:29We. Did I'll I'll throw this one in
- 22:31there. It's something, I don't really
- 22:33know what category it falls under, but we didn't have a John
- 22:35Love field goal this week. That's, that's, that's all that
- 22:40man needs to keep kicking so he can get in the league and make
- 22:43money and he's he's. I mean, we ended up, you know,
- 22:48getting getting down there a couple times.
- 22:50You know, we went forward turn it over on downs.
- 22:53Yeah. So.
- 22:53Yeah, we went forward. We'll do what you're supposed to
- 22:55do when you're the underdog, you're supposed to go for it.
- 22:57So yeah, we didn't see a John left field goal.
- 23:01So yeah, Shelton, anything to put the cherry on top of the
- 23:05Georgia Tech game. Yeah.
- 23:07Regarding the run, the run pass splits credited Doug.
- 23:10Doug Bowman here. Tech ranks 33rd in FBS in
- 23:14rushing success rate, but only 125th in passing success rate,
- 23:19130. And I was like, there's 134 in,
- 23:22right, 130, yeah, 136 now, but still.
- 23:24And then you look at some of the EPA numbers, pretty much the
- 23:26same splits rushing overall, I think it's 23rd and then passing
- 23:31111th. So, you know, if, if Tech ran
- 23:34the ball more, would those splits necessarily stay the
- 23:37same? I don't think so.
- 23:38But at the same time, you know, they could probably a little bit
- 23:40more balanced relative to what their strengths are, like Brian
- 23:42said. So I just think, you know,
- 23:44Montgomery's really trying to force the pass and it's just,
- 23:46it's just not working at all. You know, it kind of worked last
- 23:49year because we got we had guys like tuned that could, you know,
- 23:51really break off big explosive plays.
- 23:54But it's just, it's just not going to work with this team.
- 23:55But the with the personal they have.
- 23:57So I I do think they need to start running a little bit more.
- 23:59They go, they go. That's something like Kyron has
- 24:02like has been pressured like some of the most in the country
- 24:05as Oh yes. Drop backs, yeah, it was like it
- 24:08was, it was total number of quarterback hits, I think hits.
- 24:13I could remember. Those pressures are hits, yeah.
- 24:14Right. Yeah.
- 24:15Percent percentage wise, it's not, it's, it's not, it's not
- 24:17like #1 bad, but it's, it's still up there in terms like the
- 24:20actual total. So he's just just taking such a
- 24:22high volume of hits to his body. There we go.
- 24:26What can we do better moving forward?
- 24:28Protect power and run the ball more and be who you are.
- 24:33All right, before we get into the big topic and start bringing
- 24:36people on tonight, I want to hit one topic we just did not get a
- 24:39chance to hit last week. And that is the changes that are
- 24:42likely to be voted and confirmed with the portal for 2026.
- 24:47And if you hadn't heard, and I'm going to get y'all's opinion
- 24:51real quick, but this is the ones I pulled out.
- 24:52First of all, spring portal is being eliminated.
- 24:56If you're with your team in spring, you're with them all
- 24:58year. They are moving the.
- 25:00Portal. Window that was December.
- 25:03For 20 days to January, it's going to be effectively the 2nd
- 25:07through the 16th. Now if you are in the CFP that
- 25:13moves and they get an additional 5 days to get in the portal
- 25:16after their final game. Another change and we've already
- 25:20seen the reflection on that for this year is for us it was the
- 25:25coach leave the 30 minute or 30 day window immediately after
- 25:29their fire. So that Monday Prowl shower on a
- 25:32Sunday, it's open from that Monday, 30 days.
- 25:35I think we are just about closing it now, right?
- 25:39It's almost closed. It was the 20th or something.
- 25:42So we got another week where kids can jump in the portal.
- 25:44Well, that changes as well. If the coach leaves, first of
- 25:48all, for anything can happen. It's a five day grace period.
- 25:51So to me, what they're saying is if you get fired, you're going
- 25:53to get a whole week with your new coach and then after that,
- 25:5715 days to enter the portal. So not as long.
- 26:02I'll start with Sheldon. I like it, hate it, don't give a
- 26:06shit. Yeah, I have a lot of
- 26:09interesting thoughts on this. You know, I'm a I'm a big
- 26:12athletes rights guys. I always support the players and
- 26:14sometimes it leads me to very unpopular opinions.
- 26:16But I guess my question would be like, it seems like an extremely
- 26:21small window of time considering you've got the playoffs going
- 26:25on. You know, guys are making
- 26:26decisions where they don't necessarily know, you know, what
- 26:28the what the outlook for the team is or you know who the
- 26:30coach is going to be sometimes. And you know, the end of the
- 26:34school year, summer is when, you know, lots of students tend to
- 26:37leave and transfer. So you're kind of saying like
- 26:39football players can't do that without, I guess, suffering a
- 26:42penalty. So I think it'll probably be
- 26:45challenged in court. I understand it.
- 26:48You know, it certainly leads to more, you know, stability, I
- 26:50guess from like the coach's perspective and you kind of know
- 26:52who's going to be under roster. But it it seems that it seems a
- 26:55tad bit too much. So I would like to see maybe a
- 26:58little bit more concession towards the the player side
- 27:01here. But I like I said, I I think
- 27:03this will will get challenged up pretty pretty soon here.
- 27:08I think if there were scenarios where a coach wasn't having to
- 27:14not only re recruit his entire roster, but also get in the
- 27:19transfer portal and fill and fill any gaps that would be
- 27:22remaining, you could you could keep a situation where you had a
- 27:26spring portal and a winter portal.
- 27:28I feel like with the structure of the transfer portal and NIL
- 27:35and the ability of of players to really be as mobile as they are,
- 27:42there's going to need to be some give and take with that.
- 27:45And I'm I'm not sure if this is maybe the best implementation of
- 27:50that, but I think it does give a little bit more stability of
- 27:56coaches being able to balance re recruiting their roster, what
- 28:00they can get in the transfer portal.
- 28:02And at least knowing more or less that once they get their
- 28:06roster kind of set and raked after that window, they at least
- 28:13know what they're going to be starting the season with.
- 28:15Even if players ultimately decide to opt out red shirt and
- 28:20transfer mid season like we've seen with some players, you know
- 28:24that's going to happen regardless.
- 28:26But you know this, this is at least saying, you know, within
- 28:30that window, there's not going to be two different windows of
- 28:33shuffling in the offseason that a coach would have to manage as
- 28:37they're kind of working towards that fall camp.
- 28:42Anything on this? Town, I mean, just what
- 28:45everybody else has kind of said. I know well, Brian mainly, but
- 28:50it's kind of like it's become became such a shit show, to be
- 28:55honest with you. Like I I'm with Shelton as far
- 28:58as the players advocate and they do deserve certain things.
- 29:03But I get it. You know, coaches are leaving,
- 29:06coaches are getting fired and changing and things like that.
- 29:09So a lot of stuff happens, but I think they just let it be the
- 29:14wild, Wild West for so long until somebody finally was like,
- 29:16please, let's do something. And they're like, oh, you need
- 29:20me? Well, now I got to pimp you
- 29:21again. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:23It's kind of like that's what I feel like it went to.
- 29:25So only way I can describe like something had to happen because
- 29:29it's so much movement and being you got so many kids that are
- 29:34like not playing in bowl games and all my transfer I'm sitting
- 29:40out because of this. So they're like, OK, well, you
- 29:42messing with our money, so we're going to mess with y'all's
- 29:44money. So it is what it is, man.
- 29:46I, I ain't saying it's good or bad.
- 29:49I don't know. I think that anything where they
- 29:51get their mix and then get involved.
- 29:53Sometimes it's a little screwy, but we'll see how it plays out.
- 29:57A. 100% and see it's it's like a split difference here because
- 30:02what you say, Shelton Yep, that they are they are humans.
- 30:05They should have some sort of rights when it comes to this,
- 30:09but there's also needs to be structure.
- 30:11In so many other sports, there are structure and so many other
- 30:14leagues. Their structure and this is it
- 30:16is the wild, Wild West. If they had just started a few
- 30:19years ago and just said when you initially get to your
- 30:21destination after you sign your your letter of intent, you got
- 30:24to stay there three years. Now you have to and then get
- 30:28your money. And then after that third year,
- 30:31you likely have two years of eligibility left.
- 30:33Then do whatever the hell you want to do.
- 30:35So I think it's almost there like they're tightening it up.
- 30:38I think if I, if I remember correctly from reading the
- 30:41articles, they are going to be exceptions where if effectively
- 30:44a player goes to a coach and the coach signs off, the coach can
- 30:47they can enter the portal and they can transfer during the
- 30:50summer. And maybe that comes smaller
- 30:56waves. Like if you just got to a school
- 30:58you can't immediately like to me like a double year transfer.
- 31:01If you transfer portal in January, you cannot do it again
- 31:05in May. If you've been there two seasons
- 31:08and you got Overpass, maybe, maybe something like that, but
- 31:10that'll be interesting. Yeah, three years, Chris.
- 31:12With with would there be 3 years to that?
- 31:14Would there be exceptions to that?
- 31:16What do you mean outside of coaching changes?
- 31:18Would would there be exceptions to not being a transfer
- 31:20back-to-back years? No, it's not back-to-back years.
- 31:24Sorry, I thought. I thought that's.
- 31:25What? No, no, same year.
- 31:26So if you transferred in January to tech and then you were like,
- 31:30you know what? I can't even crack the four DP.
- 31:32I'm that bad of a player. I want to transfer to Eastern
- 31:35Washington. You don't get to do that because
- 31:39then I mean, that's that's really the bigger issue.
- 31:41So, all right, well, that's what we got so far.
- 31:46But I see the chat has been lighting up the whole time.
- 31:49Now we are here for the real chef and that is hearing y'all's
- 31:54opinions on who you feel the next Virginia Tech coach should
- 31:58be. We're going to put it real
- 32:01simple. This isn't you're going to come
- 32:03on here and talk for 30 minutes. Callie said it very nicely the
- 32:06first time we did this. He going to come on, speak a
- 32:09couple minutes, we may have a question, we may ask you a
- 32:13question and keep going. But then after you've done all
- 32:16that, where they got to go tally?
- 32:19Got to go to the left, man. You ain't got to go home.
- 32:21You got to get the hell out of here.
- 32:23You got to get out of here. There's likely to be more people
- 32:25want to talk about who they think should be the coach, so.
- 32:31We run a space, you know, at one time we'll run a space or
- 32:34something like that, or we'll get a little bit more in depth
- 32:37about wanting to hear you guys because we do love to hear, you
- 32:40know, everybody's takes and stuff.
- 32:41We just don't have enough time to go so deep on here.
- 32:44So the only thing that we ask when you come on, I mean, it's
- 32:49it's I ain't saying it's no rules, but everybody, we know
- 32:52how to act. All we're saying is if you come
- 32:54on and you got a coach, we just want you to come on, tell us why
- 32:59you think this is the kind of coach we need and how realistic.
- 33:03Maybe some things like that. We may ask a couple questions on
- 33:06that, but it ain't just give me Jon Gruden because he looks like
- 33:10Chucky, say. Dick Saban, I mean, that's a
- 33:13that's a good pick, but you got to tell me why that's a
- 33:15realistic choice. Why is how you think What?
- 33:18What drew you to that? Yeah.
- 33:19And what what needs to happen for us to entice him?
- 33:23Something you got to give us, give us a, you know, maybe give
- 33:26us a sandwich with some chips on the side.
- 33:28Like we don't need spaghetti, the salad, the bread, you know,
- 33:33then some lasagna. We don't need that whole meal.
- 33:36Just give me like a little. We don't need Sunday dinner
- 33:39like. Not only Sunday, we just want
- 33:41like a little cookout, little cookout plate, you know what I'm
- 33:43saying? Hot dog.
- 33:46We don't need the milkshake though, we just need to drink.
- 33:48We don't need the milkshake. No, no no, we don't have no
- 33:50shakes in here, no milkshakes. Black people be lactose
- 33:54intolerant anyway. We don't really mess with
- 33:55milkshake, our stomach be messed up so all.
- 33:59Right, I I have dropped the link in the the YouTube chat and
- 34:04Twitter chat. We already got one.
- 34:06We already got 1 alum coming in. We already got 1 alum coming in.
- 34:10So we'll get him in here first. Y'all know him?
- 34:14Y'all know him What's? Up homie.
- 34:15Christopher Lester. I got to him, man.
- 34:19Hold on before you get started Chris, this is AI.
- 34:22See the hokey jersey in the background?
- 34:25Yeah. Oh, never mind, never mind.
- 34:26I see what the hat says. I was.
- 34:28Like, yeah, we. Are not supporting no Cowboys on
- 34:31here. But then I read it.
- 34:32OK, You're fine with that. Hey, listen, man.
- 34:37We talking hokey? Football.
- 34:38This is my applying pressure hat to to my to my professional
- 34:43team, but my but my choice. And me and we've talked, you
- 34:48know, we talk everyday. I don't know why Sheldon ain't
- 34:51in the chat, but he's probably somewhere asleep.
- 34:53So he's not kicking when it's on this chat.
- 34:55We have on a regular basis. My, my, my, my, my choice is up
- 35:00until this weekend, it was Sullivan down in, I mean,
- 35:03Summerall, I think some is it Summerall down in Tulane.
- 35:06That was my job. That was my guy down there.
- 35:09But dude, I go get it. Go get a former Penn State
- 35:14coach, man, Go get James Franklin.
- 35:17And I think you go get him because he gives you the the
- 35:21notoriety of being a big time coach coming here.
- 35:26He's going to a lesser conference that he can has the
- 35:28ability to win because where he was at, he was always, always
- 35:32the fourth team in that conference when he was in the
- 35:35Big 10 and, and, and it dropped, he was third and then it dropped
- 35:38down. Now it's Ohio State, Michigan,
- 35:42it's going to be Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana.
- 35:47And then, you know, now he's in that rumbling with Michigan and
- 35:52all those other people. So go get James.
- 35:54He's been able to pill for Virginia for years in the
- 35:56recruiting ranks. And then I'll go get him.
- 36:01But that's, that's my choice, man.
- 36:02That's my choice. Tally, he came out, he already
- 36:05got you flagged there. That's your flag because Tally,
- 36:08that's that's who Tally's on. Hey, I mean, if you, if you're
- 36:12going to, if you, if you're going to go and sell out and for
- 36:15you to get signity, which probably won't happen, you're
- 36:18going to pay 10 million. That would be that.
- 36:21You know, that would be a great move.
- 36:23But with Penn State being open, that's going to be to the point
- 36:26somebody's going to have to pay that guy 10 to 11,000,000 to get
- 36:30him out of Indiana. So let's go ahead and get that
- 36:32out the way. You're going to have to pay him
- 36:34that kind of money to get him out.
- 36:36And if I'm him, I'm not leaving there.
- 36:38Why would I leave there? I'm right in the middle of the
- 36:40Midwest. I can get all the offensive
- 36:42lineman I want that don't go end up going to Wisconsin or Iowa
- 36:47somewhere. And I'm always going to be able
- 36:48to get skill players, so. Yeah, and I and you can take a
- 36:52step back Mayor, win 8 or 9 games and not not really have a
- 36:56concern for your job. Well, the the duo.
- 36:59Going to end up having he's probably going to mess around.
- 37:02He's definitely going to be in the CFP 2 years back-to-back.
- 37:04He's going to have a quarterback that's going to be either get a
- 37:07call to go to New York to be in the Heisman candidate, a Heisman
- 37:10Trophy race or be a first round draft pick.
- 37:13So he going to turn around and get get another quarterback and
- 37:16his brother's already there. He's already talented.
- 37:19So, yeah, but you know, when, when, when he comes back
- 37:23expectations. And that's why I'm saying if you
- 37:25bring Coach Franklin here, we got to get back to 8-9 wins.
- 37:30You know, we got to get back to that this point of old.
- 37:33He doesn't win the big game. And a lot of people have said
- 37:36this, you're at Virginia Tech. We we haven't won a lot of big
- 37:41games. That we were doing, so this is
- 37:43what I'll throw in too. This is just about the coaching,
- 37:47so search in general because I posted some on the X and people
- 37:51was like, Oh no, why would you want him?
- 37:53He don't win the big games. First of all, go look at his
- 37:55record. We changed to what we feel like
- 37:57a big game because he won games in the playoffs and he's not a
- 38:00big that's not a big game because he can't beat Ohio
- 38:03State. Who who can fucking beat Ohio
- 38:05State right now? There ain't too many people
- 38:09because this is not just him. Listen, man, sometimes I'm dumb.
- 38:13It don't happen very often, but I'm kind of dumb sometimes.
- 38:17So I had to go back and change my stance on things.
- 38:20I was thinking about Shane Beamer.
- 38:22I was like, hell, Nah, because I don't like Shane.
- 38:24I don't like his attitude. He whines a little bit too much
- 38:27for me. But I did have to go back and
- 38:29say if we are looking for a coach, I can't say I can't.
- 38:32I'm Virginia Tech. I can't turn my nose up at to
- 38:36nobody that. Is.
- 38:38Producing. So I had to go back and think
- 38:40about it so far, all the people or in the chat today or people
- 38:43who just may go back and watch this, any coach that's being
- 38:46talked about, how can you turn your nose up at a coach and say
- 38:49he can't win the big game and we can't fucking win a little game?
- 38:53We can. Drug by.
- 38:55We got drug liberty. So you mean to tell me if we
- 39:03bring a coach in and he gets us to 8-9 wins for the next three
- 39:07years, that's not a step up. Come on man, y'all got to come
- 39:10on start thinking stop talking crazy.
- 39:12We're not going to hire a coach and go to the playoffs the next
- 39:15year. We're not going to hire a coach
- 39:17and go to the national championship.
- 39:18We we only been one time. I'm just saying calm down.
- 39:22I just wanted to go ahead and get that out.
- 39:24So when we're talking about these coaches, everybody kind of
- 39:26gets a level head on what we thinking because when you go in
- 39:30these chats, when you go in these spaces and stuff, you can
- 39:34do that. We ain't doing that tonight.
- 39:35Like don't come on here and talk.
- 39:37No, not this person. No, not that person that Hey,
- 39:40Chris. As always, appreciate you giving
- 39:42the time. We got two more in the hole.
- 39:44Hey, man, I get out. I got you.
- 39:45Hey, I just want to get in and get it out, man.
- 39:47Appreciate y'all man. Hurry up.
- 39:49Let's hurry up soon. Get Shelton to sleep because.
- 39:50Shelton about to fall asleep. He's trying.
- 39:54He's thinking. Of the good buddy.
- 39:56I'll meet you later, Chris, please.
- 39:58All right, throw Quest in here. Quest.
- 40:04Here's some quest how we doing. Can you hear me?
- 40:07We got you. We got.
- 40:09You. Hey, I'm.
- 40:11Huh. Who's your?
- 40:13Man. Man, I'm going to be honest.
- 40:16It's Shane, OK? But I'm going to tell it's
- 40:20really not Shane, but it's Shane.
- 40:22Because he makes the most sense. For what we need right now,
- 40:25like, and it's something me and Tally talk about on a regular,
- 40:29Shane Beamer walks in the door. We're going to get whatever we
- 40:32want from the boosters. He's going to be able to walk
- 40:35in. He's been recruiting Virginia
- 40:36very well down to South Carolina.
- 40:40He has the name recognition from his pops so it feeds 2 things.
- 40:46For whatever reason, we are stuck on nostalgia at Virginia
- 40:50Tech. We can't let it go from in a
- 40:52Sandman to the Lunch Pail. We we constantly want to bring
- 40:56all of this back. So we got a unique situation
- 40:59where we can bring back some nostalgia.
- 41:01He was a player. His dad is the GOAT at Virginia
- 41:04Tech. And it also moves forward to the
- 41:06future because Shane is running South Carolina like a real, you
- 41:11know, 2025 type programs should be run.
- 41:13They're not winning like that, but.
- 41:16I like that. That's a good point, man.
- 41:18He is. He's got them in the right
- 41:20direction for current times. For current times, yeah.
- 41:22So who would I like? I'm just going to be honest.
- 41:26For me, I would like Urban Meyer, because if you come in
- 41:31Urban Meyer, within two years you're going to be playing for
- 41:34national championship. That's his resume.
- 41:37Now. What happens after he leaves?
- 41:42You don't. But I'm going to be honest, if
- 41:44we're going to wind up spending close to 12 million for a coach
- 41:49like right now, you got guys like what's my man down in
- 41:52Kentucky? You got Mark Stoops, who's
- 41:54making nine and a half million right now.
- 41:58I saw, I saw you put that on the timeline a couple days ago and
- 42:01you were like, you're going to have to pay 101112 million for a
- 42:04coach. Yeah.
- 42:05So if we're going to have to spend that kind of money, let's
- 42:09just and you know, I was kind of joking here in the chat a little
- 42:12while when I said a little while ago when I said Nick Saban.
- 42:16But the reality is, let's look at what comes up.
- 42:18Penn State is probably going to reset the the pay scale for
- 42:22coaches coming up here if they can afford it.
- 42:25So depending on what happens, if we know that the new UCLA has
- 42:30the money to spend on the coach, That's not saying they will, but
- 42:33they have. They don't.
- 42:35They don't. They don't have the money to
- 42:37spend on the. Couch, they don't.
- 42:40Have the money right? Here's the thing that a lot of
- 42:42people mention about Penn State. A lot of schools are looking to
- 42:44private equity to fund their coaches.
- 42:47So you got UCLA in a place like LA with that kind of potential
- 42:52revenue base, advertising and everything else.
- 42:55I could see them understanding what the arms race looks like,
- 42:58going to go work a private equity deal and dropping
- 43:0215,000,000 on a coach. I really think Penn State is
- 43:05going to spend around 15,000,000 on their next coach.
- 43:09I think Oklahoma State is probably going to spend around
- 43:1212 to 13 million on their next coach.
- 43:14So if we're in that kind of ballpark, if that's what we're
- 43:17talking about, fuck it. Let's just shoot for the moon.
- 43:21Let's make Nick a offer. Like Nick, look, we hear you
- 43:24want to get back at the coaching.
- 43:26We got 16,000,000 a year for four years.
- 43:28What do you think? God, dawg, Well, quest, I know
- 43:33we I know we can. I know we can pick your brain
- 43:35for the rest of the night and I probably will once we get done
- 43:38with this, but we appreciate you coming on the last, the last
- 43:43thing that I'll throw out there. I guess I'll say if you had to
- 43:46do some off script stuff to get Nick Saban in Blacksburg, what
- 43:50are you doing? Oh, man.
- 43:52Listen, I'm promising Nick. I'm promising Nick the world
- 43:54like Nick, we're going to, we're going to give you part of a new
- 43:56hotel. We're going to give you part of
- 43:58one of these car dealerships over here.
- 44:01Like I'm, I'm like Nick, we're going.
- 44:03To give you Blacksburg, Why not? Listen, we're going to give you
- 44:07lights up. We got this new Amazon situation
- 44:10going. Like Nick, we will have Amazon
- 44:12lease the building from you and just let you get some of the
- 44:16returns on that. Get creative they're.
- 44:19Going to. Save in motor mile.
- 44:22There. You go, there, you go, there you
- 44:25go. Like again, don't think it's
- 44:27going to happen. So just for the context of this,
- 44:30I just think everybody needs to lock in and get comfortable with
- 44:33Shane being the front runner now.
- 44:34I would like James Franklin. I think he's I think he recruits
- 44:38Virginia very well. And it's it's it's like what
- 44:41Tally said. Listen, we're complaining about
- 44:43James doesn't win the big game. We ain't been to no big games in
- 44:46the wild. We.
- 44:47Just. Need to get we just need to win
- 44:51the little games and then we just need to win the little
- 44:53games. Let's win the games we we
- 44:54supposed to win first and then we can worry about beating
- 44:57ranked teams and taking care of that business.
- 44:59But I, I. The reason I don't think James
- 45:01Franklin happens is because of pride.
- 45:03I just think there's a bad taste coming in from hence, you know,
- 45:08Penn State, he was prize boss, you know, who knows, somebody
- 45:12might float the room that he's going to hire prices DC and
- 45:15bring him back to Blacksburg like.
- 45:19That's really my only knock. And not, not, not that scenario,
- 45:23but my only knock against Franklin is like, is this going
- 45:27down? Like, OK, so you're hiring
- 45:29somebody that just left Penn State.
- 45:30We just tried that with Pride. I know Pride was the first time
- 45:32head coach. There was a whole lot of other
- 45:34ancillary things that were potential pitfalls or pride, but
- 45:38it feels like kind of going to the hole, going to the same
- 45:40well. Again, don't forget the failed
- 45:42OC came from Penn State too. He was on stat.
- 45:46He was on. That's how far I knew him.
- 45:48He was on. So it's a lot of that Penn State
- 45:50negativity, which is why I don't think James Franklin happens.
- 45:54Before I get out of here, I would just like to say please
- 45:57stop the day of Mueller conversations.
- 45:58I don't want to see him in Blacksburg.
- 46:00I don't think it works you. Ain't going to want to hear me
- 46:03talking. Hey, hey, hey, hey.
- 46:06Just keep hanging on Quest. We got some people that's going
- 46:09to come in here and say, yeah, Brian, I know you got some other
- 46:11people to get in here. Yeah, question.
- 46:14Appreciate it though. All right.
- 46:15Thanks guys. What's up y'all?
- 46:21What's going on, man? Yeah, when I put my hat on.
- 46:24And he came in. Listen, listen, I've been
- 46:28thinking about this all day. I ain't going to lie to y'all.
- 46:31All day I've been thinking about this.
- 46:34This. This I don't want James Franklin
- 46:37conversation is bothering me. To death, I promise y'all, like
- 46:41you can't tell me. You can't tell me.
- 46:44You look at Beamer's record and then look at Frank, I mean James
- 46:47Franklin's record and say I don't want this guy.
- 46:51And we celebrate Beamer like he's the best thing in the
- 46:53world. Like, there's big, there's.
- 46:56Stats to prove that he's done, he's done, he's done well.
- 47:00So I don't know. Franklin, probably one of the
- 47:03most, he is one of the most qualified coaches out there
- 47:06right now. Yeah, he lost some games this
- 47:09year. I'm not saying Jane Franklin's
- 47:10coming, but like I said earlier, I think.
- 47:14He got unjustified because they dumb up there.
- 47:18But here's my worry, Dale and he I'll, I'll, I'll put my Franklin
- 47:22while I worry about it. If you said we hired him, I'd be
- 47:25OK with it. What I worry is, is, and I know
- 47:30people are going to say he's going to the ACC, it's not as
- 47:31talented. The talent he had to me he did
- 47:36less with and that's my work. And everybody's like, well, he
- 47:40recruits Virginia. Hold on, let me go on the rant I
- 47:43went on a little while ago. Brit Brown recruit the hell out
- 47:46of Virginia. Go look at his 247 resume, all
- 47:49the primaries he was on. That didn't help.
- 47:51Shane recruited the shit out of Virginia when he was at Georgia,
- 47:54and when he was at South Carolina, he came home, he
- 47:58couldn't close on certain guys. My fear is it's not who they
- 48:02are. The stigma inside the state is
- 48:05kids. I don't want to go there.
- 48:08And the only way we'd have a chance if somebody backed up the
- 48:11truck and said you want the biggest bag ever, you got here.
- 48:15And again, I'm not saying if we hired him, I'd be like, you know
- 48:20what? I would talk myself into him,
- 48:22but that's my only fear. Here's my thing.
- 48:25If we going to pay money for somebody, don't go get one of
- 48:29these group of five coaches or nothing like that.
- 48:32We're going to pay a whole bunch of money to somebody.
- 48:35Like if I'm going to a car lot tally and I'm going to go spend
- 48:39$80,000 on something, don't give me no, don't give me no junk.
- 48:44I want something proven, something nice like give me.
- 48:48The thing, the thing you run into with coaching though, is
- 48:52like, I'm not a no group of five coaches type of guy.
- 48:55It just comes down sometimes to like if I like the style that
- 48:59that person plays, I heard an interview and I like them.
- 49:01That's just a personal thing because The thing is that some
- 49:04of the coaches that are at some of these group of fives when
- 49:07they go to bigger schools, like look at Signet, he mean
- 49:11superstar. What's the coach that said, the
- 49:14coach that said Oregon right now, what's my man's name?
- 49:21Dan Lane, right? So say what now?
- 49:25Lanny was a Georgia first, you got to remember.
- 49:28That right, But he was a he was, he was not a head coach at
- 49:30Georgia. He was that's what I'm saying.
- 49:33So when you look at things like, OK, we hired Brett Pryor as a
- 49:36defensive coordinator, hadn't coached organ, hired this guy
- 49:41and he been tearing it up for the most part, you know what I'm
- 49:44saying? So it's different situations.
- 49:46So I don't say no, this can't happen.
- 49:48No, not this person because he's here.
- 49:50Sometimes it can work, but it's got to make sense.
- 49:53Like you got to give me some kind of proven when we hired
- 49:57Justin Fuente, when we when we hired Justin Fuente, we probably
- 50:01don't like him now, but that was a great hire for what he was at
- 50:04that time, probably one of the hottest names that Virginia Tech
- 50:08went and got. He just didn't work at Virginia.
- 50:10I mean, he took us to, we won 10 games with him.
- 50:13You know, he, he, he got us some wins.
- 50:16But he already has the talent. He can.
- 50:18He can make it. Work.
- 50:19Yeah, when he has the talent. That is true.
- 50:21So that is true. Question real quick, go ahead.
- 50:24Who were you on before Franklin? Because it, it seems like for
- 50:27you it was like as soon as you'd be like, wait a second, the guy
- 50:30who's went 38 and seven the last three years is available, The
- 50:34guy that went to the semi finals, who was who was your guy
- 50:39before? Just wondering, Dan Mullen.
- 50:44Like I said. Here we go.
- 50:49Here's the deal with me. We're going to pay some money to
- 50:52somebody. We're going to pay somebody like
- 50:56that's we don't want to, we don't want to play funny money.
- 50:59We don't want to go out and get a coach that ain't done nothing
- 51:03and then bring them in and then fire him, have to pay his buyout
- 51:06and then try to go get somebody else.
- 51:09Pay to pay the people that you know going to do something.
- 51:11Even if they leave in two or three years, if they can get our
- 51:14program back in the right direction, then we can bring in
- 51:18somebody else. You know what I'm saying?
- 51:20Leave it. Leave it better than you.
- 51:21Then you found. It the arguments I've been
- 51:24hearing is, Oh well, James Franklin will come and then
- 51:26he'll leave for a bigger job. If he comes in and has two or
- 51:30three great recruiting years and we get ourselves in a good
- 51:34position and we can bring somebody else in.
- 51:37But we got to, we got to get ourselves in the right direction
- 51:41first. We can't just go out and just
- 51:44play funny money. Go bring in somebody we don't
- 51:46know nothing about. Like go, this is what I, this is
- 51:49what I'll say to, to, to piggyback on what Dale is
- 51:52talking about too. If you go look at now, this
- 51:55ain't just me talking because whenever I talk, then, you know,
- 51:57some people say, are you just a home or are you just saying that
- 52:01because that's your team and stuff?
- 52:02If you go look at like big conversations about what is the
- 52:06best job available now, you know, of course things are going
- 52:09to happen. People are going to be Virginia
- 52:11Tech's up towards the top. Like, people still regard
- 52:14Virginia Tech as a football school and a good school to be
- 52:17at. And everybody wants us to be
- 52:19good. There's a lot of people who are
- 52:22covering the football scene that wants Virginia Tech to be good.
- 52:27So I'm not saying that we can't go get some of these bigger
- 52:30names. I'm just saying we look at
- 52:33ourselves as this, I don't know, this homeless crew or this
- 52:40thrift store school. Let's just go.
- 52:43Let's go and make something happen.
- 52:45Let's do something. We're better than a lot of
- 52:48people think we are. Like as far as the program, like
- 52:53we just got new locker rooms. We we, our stadium's nice.
- 52:57Like we got some good things to work off of.
- 53:00I know we need LEDs and all this stuff everybody else is talking
- 53:03about, but like a coach will come in, bring in some players,
- 53:07fix the program and we'll be in good position.
- 53:10Some of these people. Got a lot more stuff to deal
- 53:13with than we got. I'm with that.
- 53:16Brad as as we wrap up with Dale here, Dan Mullins your guy.
- 53:21All right, So innovative offensive bond, I think that's
- 53:24going to work well here. We can recruit defense pretty
- 53:26well. Virginia Tech, we need to have
- 53:28some sort of plus on the offensive side in order to get
- 53:31that thing rolling. He's proven being able to win in
- 53:34the SEC, had eleven wins when he was at Florida one year.
- 53:38Really good track record in Mississippi State.
- 53:41Does a good job of coming in and winning right away, which is
- 53:44what we need. The UNLV, yeah, comes in, wins
- 53:47right away. He can recruit well.
- 53:51He is showing the ability to adapt based on his personnel and
- 53:56just go out there and get the job done.
- 54:00I think he does a pretty good job from a media standpoint.
- 54:02I don't, I don't think he'll be the boon of getting the big
- 54:05money in that a Shane or a James Franklin would be, but I think.
- 54:10He's a hot name, though. A hot.
- 54:12Name, though, he's at that next. Yeah, he's a, he's a, he's still
- 54:15a big name coach. He's not going to be at UNLV
- 54:18next year. No, he won't.
- 54:19He's going to be somewhere else. Well, this and Dale appreciate
- 54:22you chatting with me yesterday on the timeline.
- 54:26Appreciate you jumping in here tonight, man.
- 54:27And we appreciate you listening and being with us and y'all be
- 54:30safe. Appreciate that.
- 54:32Love that hat, Dale. The blacks, we got blackouts.
- 54:37Training is Vito Vito in the building.
- 54:40Good evening, gentlemen. Can y'all hear me?
- 54:42We got you. Yeah.
- 54:45You know me, I'm always on the Xbox, but I won't be in the
- 54:48house just waiting to be camera ready and shit.
- 54:52So here we go. Good evening.
- 54:53Good evening. Good evening.
- 54:55How we feeling, Vito? Bless mine, bless all right.
- 55:00Who we got? Come on here and tell us who's
- 55:01your man. Tell us, Mike Novell, your
- 55:03person. Nah, I want to, I just want to
- 55:07speak on the James Franklin conversation like everybody else
- 55:10have really. I, I, I mean, everybody pretty
- 55:15much here agrees. It's it's only a a vocal
- 55:18minority of Virginia Tech fans that don't like Penn State
- 55:24personally that get into the whole that get into the whole
- 55:30Franklin conversation. James Franklin is the most
- 55:34qualified coach out of everybody here been to the playoffs, one
- 55:38playoff games, one new year, six games recruited to State.
- 55:43Well, he's he's done. He's Frank basically.
- 55:47He's Frank Beamer. Basically.
- 55:48He did everything Frank did basically, except have a number
- 55:53one overall draft pick there. We go and I think, I think part
- 55:58of the problem I think some people are getting into is that
- 56:02they're having the difficulty of separating whether they like a
- 56:06coach versus whether that would be a good coach to have a
- 56:09Virginia Tech. And I think sometimes they're
- 56:11like, well, I haven't liked Franklin.
- 56:14I I don't, I don't like the way he was doing business up in Penn
- 56:16State or things he said on the recruiting trail about Virginia
- 56:18Tech. But at the end of the day, we
- 56:20just need to win games and get players to come into Blacksburg.
- 56:23Yeah, that's his job. His job is to downplay Virginia
- 56:26Tech. If he's trying to get a player
- 56:27from Virginia, that's his job. People got to take, people got
- 56:33to take people got to take the fan out of shit out of stuff and
- 56:37and start looking at things logically.
- 56:40You got a coach right here that knew how to coach a high level
- 56:43program. And his biggest flaw was he
- 56:46couldn't beat the top three teams in the country like
- 56:50everybody else. What are we doing?
- 56:53Ohio State can't even beat Michigan and they won a natty
- 56:57like they were about to fire their coach nine months ago.
- 57:01Go ahead, go ahead, Sir. No, I'll just say just like me
- 57:04and you was talking earlier and you was like they was about to
- 57:06fire dude. They was about to fire Ryan Day
- 57:08and then he went on a run and won the championship like they
- 57:11was ready to get him out of there because he can't beat
- 57:13Michigan. So is that him not he can't win
- 57:17big games. He won the championship though,
- 57:19but he can't he can't beat his robbery can't beat Michigan.
- 57:21So it's oh shit, but they pick and choose what's a big.
- 57:24Game. We pick and choose with big
- 57:27games for who like once that narrative come out on you like
- 57:31they pick and choose like Lamar Jackson always beats Joe Burrow,
- 57:35but we decided that Joe Burrow don't lose big games.
- 57:38So every time Lamar Jackson beats Joe Burrow is not a big
- 57:41game. But if Joe Burrow ever beat
- 57:43Lamar Jackson, it's a big game. We pick and choose.
- 57:48Facts depending on whatever narrative is running.
- 57:52So James Franklin can't win big games, so the playoff games he
- 57:56won ain't big games no more. Had he lost them bitches big
- 57:59games? It's stupid as hell and and.
- 58:03That's your. Guy Vito.
- 58:04You all I was gonna say, Vito, do you got, do you got a guy
- 58:07that you would like to see in Blacksburg outside of James
- 58:11Franklin? Yeah, just anybody.
- 58:13It could be Franklin. Is that your guy or who?
- 58:15Who would you want to see as the next coach?
- 58:18I won't. Whit Babcock.
- 58:19Not in Blacksburg no more. That's that's all I did.
- 58:23Let's do that one. Yeah, that other stuff don't
- 58:28matter, man. I got to.
- 58:29I got to protect a black coach. Man, I don't know if James
- 58:32Franklin even is black, but I got to protect non white coaches
- 58:36because there ain't that many of us allowed to even coach.
- 58:40So I got to protect, I got to protect my people, man.
- 58:43I got to stand up. That's all the black guests too.
- 58:49It's been an all black guest shout out to boundary corner man
- 58:53pushing diversity. I got to say this while Vito's
- 58:57on here because he just brought it up.
- 58:59I don't think a lot of people understand and I I don't want to
- 59:02make it all about race, but we've never had a black coach in
- 59:06Blacksburg, right? If you get a black coach in
- 59:09Blacksburg, it's going to there is going to be an uptick in
- 59:13recruiting. I'm just going to go ahead and
- 59:15tell you I ain't going to go get, I ain't going to just tell
- 59:18you going to go get any black dude and bring him in.
- 59:19I'm just saying like Fran Brown going to Syracuse caused the
- 59:23uptick in recruiting because there's not a lot of black
- 59:26coaches. So you're going to have some
- 59:28kids that are going to go and want to play for a black coach.
- 59:32I mean, that's just what it is, whether you want to hear it or
- 59:34you don't like, that's just what it is.
- 59:36So now you talk about James Franklin being a coach that is a
- 59:41high level coach and it's coached at the highest level,
- 59:43which is the play offs almost made it to a a, a national
- 59:47championship. He's going to get some kids.
- 59:50So when people start talking about, well, they ain't going to
- 59:52want to play here and they man, you don't know until you try it.
- 59:55So I just want to throw that out and kind of kill that
- 59:58conversation with people out there saying he can't recruit or
- 1:00:01he can and stuff like if he came to Blacksburg, he'll be able to
- 1:00:03feel the his recruiting classes would be better than Prize or
- 1:00:07Fuentes. I agree.
- 1:00:10With that man just off the mere fact the mother fucker will
- 1:00:12bring some people with them unlike the last coach from Penn
- 1:00:15State. Bring some Penn State people
- 1:00:18with your game. What you doing?
- 1:00:19That's one of the things I was talking about earlier before we
- 1:00:22hit hit go live, man. I was like, well, when we look
- 1:00:25at what pride did and what I think frankly could do, it's
- 1:00:28like, you know, some of these guys, when they move, guys move
- 1:00:32with them. I mean, even Matt Moore coming
- 1:00:34in as an assistant, you know, brought brought up the guys
- 1:00:37along along with him. Like at at some point we got to
- 1:00:40look at why folks didn't follow the train there, especially
- 1:00:44considering that a lot of those guys that were at Penn State
- 1:00:48were, you know, probably was their primary on the recruiting.
- 1:00:51So like why, why, why weren't they following this guy at some
- 1:00:54point? I'm sure some of that's a
- 1:00:55financial thing. And I think at some point it was
- 1:00:57just a, you know, he, he didn't have the motion to, to, to sway
- 1:01:02those kids to, to leave something that they knew about
- 1:01:05and, and come down to Blacksburg and give it a run.
- 1:01:09Yeah, man, shout out the prime, man.
- 1:01:11No, I'm coaching it. But no.
- 1:01:13But shout out James Franklin, man.
- 1:01:15I want James Franklin. Any other coach, man, I ain't
- 1:01:19going to disrespect no other coaches on this platform, man.
- 1:01:21I don't. I'm not qualified to speak on
- 1:01:24what they is and what they ain't.
- 1:01:26You know, I just keep my ears to the street and yeah, I want, I
- 1:01:31just want Virginia Tech fans to, you know, open up their heart a
- 1:01:34little bit and stop being so fucking hateful on Penn State
- 1:01:38because they ain't got nothing to do with us.
- 1:01:41And just you know, take take a look at James Franklin resume
- 1:01:45and look at everything Heathen did over the last 11 years and I
- 1:01:48wouldn't even did. Over the last.
- 1:01:49Three weeks, the man. Been there 11 years and they
- 1:01:53don't. These motherfuckers finished top
- 1:01:55five last year. Shout out to Penn State defining
- 1:01:58the black coach for going finishing top five and find that
- 1:02:02*** in a year. Shout out to the South to Penn
- 1:02:04State because guess what? The next coach ain't going to be
- 1:02:07Ohio State either. So.
- 1:02:10Shout out to. Shout out to Penn State bro for
- 1:02:12thinking they was them because they put a good one on the
- 1:02:15street. They.
- 1:02:16Ended with recruiting. Look at them, they fired the
- 1:02:20black coach and he was winning games.
- 1:02:23He was taking him to the. Playoffs winning games bro, and
- 1:02:26I don't even know if James Franklin back bro.
- 1:02:28He might be amigo but shout out bro, shout out to him.
- 1:02:35Vito, we appreciate you jumping on giving your opinion.
- 1:02:37As always, take care man. God bless goody guys play
- 1:02:41appreciate. Time, Vito.
- 1:02:45Alrighty. Oh, gracious.
- 1:02:47There he is. What's going on fellas?
- 1:02:50How we feeling? Today, Maddie is in the house.
- 1:02:56I know you guys are keeping it quick and it's running on a
- 1:02:59little bit, so I'm going to save you all some time.
- 1:03:00Here's where I'm at, James Franklin, Obvious choice if you
- 1:03:04can get them. The problem is we're not the
- 1:03:06pretty girl at the dance. And there's a there's a lot of
- 1:03:11people at this. By the time that this season
- 1:03:13ends, there's going to be a lot of jobs open.
- 1:03:15So with that being said, it's got to be, I think Dan Mullen,
- 1:03:20right? So every guy came to the dance
- 1:03:23and they said, I want the hottest girl here.
- 1:03:25But at some point through the night, you realize that's
- 1:03:27probably not going to happen. And so you got to settle for
- 1:03:30that 6-7, not the dime that that 6-7 that you can take home.
- 1:03:35And I think Dan Mullen is that. Hey Maddie, how many double J
- 1:03:39mods do we have to throw back before we're ready to go home
- 1:03:42with that? I mean, not many, honestly.
- 1:03:45I mean, it's one of those girls that like, like, she has good
- 1:03:49conversation. Yeah, but no.
- 1:03:51So Deb Mullins only real fall and Shelton and you guys much
- 1:03:58smarter people to me can tell me this or not.
- 1:04:01The only way that Mullen left Florida was because of weird
- 1:04:06COVID times. If it wasn't for weird COVID
- 1:04:09years, Mullen still at Florida and he did.
- 1:04:13And he's doing fine at UNLV. He still landed on his feet.
- 1:04:17Like he had good seasons at Florida until COVID, and then
- 1:04:21he's on his feet at UNLVI. Think that he's a perfect fit
- 1:04:24for us. We're not the pretty girl at the
- 1:04:26dance. Like if we can get Franklin,
- 1:04:28hell yeah. Obviously number one pick.
- 1:04:31I would take him any day in Blacksburg.
- 1:04:33But I just don't know that that's going to be the case.
- 1:04:35So for me, I'm I'm with Dan Mullen.
- 1:04:39All right, Maddie B ride with me on this one.
- 1:04:41I like that. Well I love you guys, I'm
- 1:04:44looking out here. Save y'all some time.
- 1:04:46Appreciate it. I appreciate it, Maddie, always.
- 1:04:48Appreciate it old man, have a good.
- 1:04:49One brother. Oh.
- 1:04:51Man, all right, this is going to be tough.
- 1:04:54We asked him to like to keep in between 3:00 and 5:00 minutes.
- 1:05:01Yo, what's up? What's up, my guy?
- 1:05:04Not the. White bit.
- 1:05:06Hey, the great show so far man, I was just listening I said man,
- 1:05:10I got to jump on because I got some thoughts.
- 1:05:13Hey so look man, Virginia Tech got a coaching issue right?
- 1:05:19Obviously that's what y'all talking about right?
- 1:05:21The the issue it's real simple. Like I know Maddie was just
- 1:05:26someone talking about we not the pretty girl at the dance.
- 1:05:28It's going to be a rack of positions open.
- 1:05:30You know, it's, it's going to be a lot of vacancies, but at the
- 1:05:33end of the day, man, like we might not be the pretty girl
- 1:05:36man, but we got a nice outfit, man, and we got some attributes
- 1:05:40that somebody may check for and we may be able to become a Jenny
- 1:05:44Jones makeover type check. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:05:47Yeah, we might, we got some curves, you know what I'm
- 1:05:50saying? We got a nice shape.
- 1:05:51We just we got a membership to lifetime fitness.
- 1:05:54So we can you know, look, I'm I'm going to be serious though,
- 1:05:58seriously, Virginia Tech. This is why I'm not I don't mind
- 1:06:03Franklin at all. I don't mind the guy from
- 1:06:05Memphis. I don't mind Mullin.
- 1:06:08I don't only one when quest was on here.
- 1:06:10Here's my issue. Urban Meyer.
- 1:06:12He wins immediately, but I'm concerned.
- 1:06:15I still remember him bent over having anxiety attack, panic
- 1:06:19attacks and he needs to take care of his health man, because
- 1:06:23he takes winning so seriously. He couldn't breathe.
- 1:06:25But on a serious note, with Virginia Tech got a coat.
- 1:06:30You know what's funny? When I say I got a coaching
- 1:06:32issue, this what I mean fellas, and I mean y'all, my brothers,
- 1:06:35I've gotten close to y'all over the last five years.
- 1:06:39Virginia Tech needs a guy that come in and coaches, man, the
- 1:06:42recruiting, the money, all that stuff makes sense.
- 1:06:44But I'm you go back to the last few years of the Fuente era, the
- 1:06:48timeout against Liberty, the mismanagement of personnel
- 1:06:52groupings, ostracizing the in state schools with the Texas to
- 1:06:56Virginia hashtag, the corny ass hard, smart, tough with the hard
- 1:07:01hat, you know, and then you can you bring in Fuente.
- 1:07:05I mean, excuse me, bring in Prague.
- 1:07:07He does some of the things that Fuente refused to do.
- 1:07:10But clock management, loyalty to players that should have been
- 1:07:14challenged. To me, Virginia Tech's issues is
- 1:07:17coaching. So it could be, it could be
- 1:07:19Mullen, it could be the guy from Memphis who I like a lot.
- 1:07:22It could be another coach that we might not know about right
- 1:07:26now. It's really to me, Virginia
- 1:07:28Tech's issue comes down to coaching.
- 1:07:30Like if you look at the games they lost last year, one score
- 1:07:33games if you're one in 12 and one score games, if you win half
- 1:07:37of those last year, you got nine wins.
- 1:07:40I think people are looking at it from a name standpoint because
- 1:07:43people want to fans want to win the press conference and they
- 1:07:46want to be happy with the name Mullen and all of that.
- 1:07:49I mean, listen, we got a lot of guys.
- 1:07:52I hate saying this out loud. We got players and I know people
- 1:07:54get mad we got players that's getting overpaid at tech.
- 1:08:00Yeah, I'm, I'm going to say it because I can say it.
- 1:08:02We got on. I know people say, hey, man,
- 1:08:04that's the market today. That's the market.
- 1:08:07I don't care if it's the market. I'm AI own two small businesses.
- 1:08:12I'm not overpaying anybody so accountability has been missing.
- 1:08:16So to me bring anybody in that knows how to coach and that has
- 1:08:21that knows how to get these players to work hard.
- 1:08:24The fact that we had a terrible offseason conditioning program,
- 1:08:29it was non existent. I think fans hear me talk about
- 1:08:33that. I don't think people realize the
- 1:08:35importance of running a program and how it works.
- 1:08:38Brian, you know what I'm talking about Tally, y'all know what I'm
- 1:08:41talking about. Like running a program, man,
- 1:08:43Like if so, when you talk about a name, guys, we need a guy that
- 1:08:48knows that can come in and run the program.
- 1:08:49All the other stuff, GM recruiting.
- 1:08:52You know, Curtis, you made a great point about the brand
- 1:08:55that's taking a hit. Some players ain't never going
- 1:08:57to go for Virginia Tech. Let me just remind people, Dre
- 1:09:00Blah from the 757 went to UNC. That was in the 90s Lawrence
- 1:09:04Taylor went to UNC. That was in the 90s Ronald Curry
- 1:09:08national Gatorade play the end 2 sports never been done before
- 1:09:12and hasn't been done since went to UNCUNC.
- 1:09:15Penn State guys have been going outside of the state since the
- 1:09:1970s. That's not a big surprise.
- 1:09:21But what you got to do is get in state and guys that can come in
- 1:09:25from other areas that can come in and contribute and play ball.
- 1:09:29That's what you need that that know how to deal with effort and
- 1:09:32don't know how to like be held accountable.
- 1:09:35I mean, it's just the players were telling the coaches what
- 1:09:38they weren't going to do sitting out, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:09:40Like it was the shit is sad and that's the issue, you know?
- 1:09:44So like, that's my stance on this, fellas.
- 1:09:46Like it is Franklin. I can rock with Franklin.
- 1:09:50I can rock with Franklin. Well.
- 1:09:52So everybody wants to know that the the the link is back in the
- 1:09:55chat. Brown threw it back in there.
- 1:09:56But you mentioned the name and that Shelton tile before
- 1:09:59Shelton. Yeah, Yeah, Silverfield was my
- 1:10:03guy. And I know he's kind of
- 1:10:04unconventional. I know some people are scarred
- 1:10:06from the Memphis connection. I understand that.
- 1:10:08But when you look at the all the group of five coaches outside
- 1:10:12of, you know, John Summer, who I think, you know, we all agree
- 1:10:14probably it's the best body of work he's going clearly going
- 1:10:16into SEC school. I think Silverfield has the best
- 1:10:20resume and he's been, I've done this for a few years now.
- 1:10:23He's probably on pace to have three straight 10 win seasons.
- 1:10:25You know, I know he built off some foundation that was laid by
- 1:10:27Norvell, but he's done a really good job.
- 1:10:29So he's my guy. I just think I at this point,
- 1:10:32I'd rather go with a guy who has previous head coaching
- 1:10:34experience. And if we look at some of the
- 1:10:37power for coaches, it's kind of like a mixed bag.
- 1:10:38You got Dan Mullen, who, you know, got let go a couple times.
- 1:10:42He's at UNLV now. You know, obviously Franklin's a
- 1:10:45great, you know, a great candidate, but like, do we know
- 1:10:48even if he even wants to coach next year, Like, not
- 1:10:50necessarily. So that's cut.
- 1:10:52That's the reason I chose Silverfield because I just think
- 1:10:54he has the best actual head coaching body of work among
- 1:10:57candidates that we could get. So there you go.
- 1:11:00Y'all know I will. I will rubber stamp.
- 1:11:03I'll rubber stamp Silverfield. I mean, he's a guy that
- 1:11:07obviously when I was playing in college, he came straight out of
- 1:11:11high school. Actually during his senior year
- 1:11:12he was already coaching for his own high school.
- 1:11:15Came to Hammond Sydney, coached 4 years at Hammond Sydney.
- 1:11:20He's a guy that's known he wanted to be a head coach since
- 1:11:23he knew he wanted to be anything.
- 1:11:25And I think that that's a guy that you want as a coach.
- 1:11:29Now, whether that's a good fit for Blacksburg or not, we can
- 1:11:32argue that till we're blue in the face.
- 1:11:34But if you talking about a coach and if you're talking about the
- 1:11:37best available or, you know, possibly available head coach,
- 1:11:41that's in the group of five, it's Ron Silverfield for me.
- 1:11:45Back Hey, look, Florida, Florida State about the Florida State
- 1:11:49that they keep that that Florida state's lost eight straight ACC
- 1:11:52games, right. So they probably, they probably
- 1:11:55going to be in the same situation and I don't see things
- 1:11:58turning around, you know, instinct.
- 1:12:00In, in, in. Six weeks ago, they they smoked
- 1:12:02Alabama. Smoked I.
- 1:12:04Mean. It's it's wild how how it seemed
- 1:12:08can be can smoke Alabama and then it be at the bottom of the
- 1:12:11ACC within 4 weeks. It's crazy, but but but that's
- 1:12:16why I said to me, man, like what I see going on and it's this,
- 1:12:21you know, this is a bigger issue, but what I see going on
- 1:12:24at the powerful level, I'm not going to mention the other
- 1:12:26levels or even high school. What I see is a coaching issue
- 1:12:29with programs. Fuente was a very good coach
- 1:12:34when he first got here and I agree with you guys and I was
- 1:12:36celebrating him. He was a hot commodity.
- 1:12:38He came in and did the thing, but then he did it to himself
- 1:12:42after that. But he knew how to coach and he,
- 1:12:45you know, it was just some issues with personnel and other
- 1:12:48things like that. You know, pride came in, man.
- 1:12:50And there was a sense of stubbornness, right?
- 1:12:52That's why I go back to coaching because if you look around the
- 1:12:56top 25, what I see with teams that we're losing to is they
- 1:13:00have a better group of coaches. Not to say certain guys on our
- 1:13:05staff don't know what they're doing, but the other programs
- 1:13:07seem to have more direction. That's why it doesn't have to be
- 1:13:10a hot commodity name for me. I think the name, you know with
- 1:13:14your guys that's watching and listening online on X and all of
- 1:13:17that, I think the name makes people feel good, you know what
- 1:13:20I'm saying? But like, to me, I just feel
- 1:13:23like when I look at the other programs that have that have
- 1:13:25surpassed us right now in perception and in reality, they
- 1:13:28just got better programs and they know how to run their
- 1:13:31program, not them. We're not somewhat history.
- 1:13:33I'm not a Cowboy fan. I'm talking about the here and
- 1:13:36now. So like at the end of the day,
- 1:13:38those other teams, they got better.
- 1:13:40They have a better sense of what they are on, on and off the
- 1:13:43field. Man like.
- 1:13:44There you. Go yeah, I just anyway, I
- 1:13:46appreciate you guys. Let me talk much too.
- 1:13:48Appreciate. You kicking Chris while he's
- 1:13:51down a little bit with that cowboy?
- 1:13:52Oh, that's. Right.
- 1:14:00Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris lit up on one of my DMS because I, I
- 1:14:04don't even, I don't have a favorite NFLNB A-Team, but I, I,
- 1:14:07I take time every now and then to throw the Cowboy, but I'll
- 1:14:09throw the Cowboy fans, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:14:12Because they really, they really be going through it.
- 1:14:15But every year is there a year and they talking to their
- 1:14:17defense is horrendous. I can't believe they lost to
- 1:14:20Carolina, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:14:21But anyway, but like, that's why I said gentlemen, I just want
- 1:14:25new memories, man. I just want somebody.
- 1:14:27I'm, I'm, I want somebody to come in and give us some new
- 1:14:30memories. I'm OK with scratching
- 1:14:31everything that we have just some new memories, man.
- 1:14:34But anyway I'm a jump off and listen man, appreciate y'all.
- 1:14:37Appreciate Dwight. Appreciate Dwight.
- 1:14:42All righty. We're going to try to get Phil
- 1:14:44on here. Right now it's not letting me
- 1:14:46add him because Luis says his mic and cameras disconnected.
- 1:14:49So let me go ahead and jump. We'll get Josh.
- 1:14:53Phil Phil gets his his stuff set up.
- 1:14:57Josh, what's going on tonight? Not much, fellas.
- 1:14:59How are we doing? How are we doing?
- 1:15:00What's up, Joshua? Whoa, whoa.
- 1:15:03That's the government. That's the government.
- 1:15:04Name Josh. Here you go.
- 1:15:10So before Franklin got fired, my top three that I kind of wanted
- 1:15:17to see got Dan Mullen at #1 just his track record, you know,
- 1:15:24Florida, his worst recruiting classes at Florida would still
- 1:15:28put Virginia Tech in the top 25 recruiting #2 would be a Pat
- 1:15:34Fitzgerald. What he was able to do at
- 1:15:37Northwestern back then, he was able to turn them into Big 10
- 1:15:44almost power until, you know, that whole like, hazing incident
- 1:15:48came out and then just kind of derailed everything.
- 1:15:51They did say yeah and they. Did.
- 1:15:55Yeah, they did say that he was exonerated from wrongdoing.
- 1:16:00Did he sue him or something like that?
- 1:16:01Brian. Yeah.
- 1:16:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:16:03He said. He said he ain't.
- 1:16:05So hey, I just want y'all to know we ain't going to throw no
- 1:16:07slander on Pat Fitzgerald's name.
- 1:16:10He was not allowing dingalings to be rubbed across people's
- 1:16:14heads in the car wash just to let you.
- 1:16:17Know Ding, car wash go. Ahead and the.
- 1:16:20Third one as just maybe this dude just needs a change of
- 1:16:23scenery. Luke Fickle at Wisconsin.
- 1:16:26Just maybe the expectations were too high for him at Wisconsin.
- 1:16:30A change of scenery could put him right back to where he was
- 1:16:34at Cincinnati when they beat us in that Armed Forces Bowl and
- 1:16:38then making the College Football Playoff as AG5.
- 1:16:43It's funny because you say that like I feel like the
- 1:16:45expectations for a good Wisconsin program are the same
- 1:16:48as a good Virginia Tech program, but at the same time they play
- 1:16:51in the Big 10 and not the ACC. So.
- 1:16:54The potential to get there is a whole lot easier in Blacksburg
- 1:16:57than it is in Wisconsin. But can can I say something
- 1:17:00about Luke Fickle? Because I'm glad you brought him
- 1:17:02up. He he's not my pick by any
- 1:17:04means. But the one thing about Luke
- 1:17:07Fickle and everybody's like, who's going to Wisconsin?
- 1:17:10Look at Wisconsin doesn't recruit the way you think.
- 1:17:13They recruit like, like go look at that.
- 1:17:16They don't have top 15 classes, top 20 classes.
- 1:17:19They're usually down in the 40s because of what they did all the
- 1:17:22years under Alvarez. Luke Vigelson.
- 1:17:24Ohio got through and through Ohio.
- 1:17:26Guys pull from the Mid-Atlantic, from Pennsylvania.
- 1:17:29Ohio itself is an unbelievable football state.
- 1:17:33And when he was at Ohio State, he was recruiting all over the
- 1:17:35country. I think for him, that was a bad
- 1:17:38cultural thing because where he was centered all of his life was
- 1:17:42Ohio. And it's a lot better, easier to
- 1:17:45recruit that area than if you go out to Wisconsin, which is kind
- 1:17:48of on an island. It's not as good football.
- 1:17:50So good point on that, Josh. So are you, are you?
- 1:17:54But now you, you said you had a top three, but it's Franklin.
- 1:17:57You're 1 now that that's I don't, I don't know if I would
- 1:18:00consider him the one. I would slide him into that like
- 1:18:04top 4. I mean, besides him not winning
- 1:18:09big games or whatever, in a sense, like Frank Beamer had a
- 1:18:12hard time doing that exact same thing with Tech.
- 1:18:16It's just the fact of what he was able to do in the footprint
- 1:18:20of Virginia, taking all these the top ten state kids to go to
- 1:18:25Penn State. Like if we could get half of
- 1:18:27that back to Virginia Tech with a solid coaching staff like
- 1:18:31Franklin would be like, in a sense, like a home run higher.
- 1:18:34We just got to be able to throw that that cash at him that we're
- 1:18:37supposedly supposed to have now. So because he could see how that
- 1:18:41goes. But you know everybody's.
- 1:18:42Signing. Everybody's signing NDA's now,
- 1:18:45so we have no idea what's going on.
- 1:18:48Oh, man, it's going to be all interesting to have.
- 1:18:51There's going to be a 30 for 30. At one point on this, we had
- 1:18:54Phil, we lost Phil. I was getting ready to say, but
- 1:18:57there is going to be a 30 for 30.
- 1:19:00Well, realistically we should have two.
- 1:19:02The one that's going on now and then the whole debacle in the
- 1:19:04Fuente era with regular bacon and Turkey bacon.
- 1:19:08Man, the fact that we had to have conversations about that
- 1:19:12real, real, actual conversations about Turkey bacon was kind of
- 1:19:16frustrating for me. Oh, a hundred, 100%.
- 1:19:21A. 100 Well, Josh, I like the I like you had two new names
- 1:19:24there. The Dan Mullen seems to be the
- 1:19:26one where everybody's trending. But I, I, I I like Pat
- 1:19:29Fitzgerald, too. I think he's a culture fit.
- 1:19:31And what he did at Northwestern, now that's completely upside
- 1:19:36down, that is. Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:38So I like the choices, man. And again, you jumped on here
- 1:19:41with us about a month ago. We appreciate you coming back on
- 1:19:43with us. Yeah, of course.
- 1:19:44Thanks, fellas. Take care, man.
- 1:19:47See you. Where'd Tyler go get Phil in
- 1:19:51here? Hey, damn, internet's a pitch.
- 1:19:56Like, I feel like the search committee right now.
- 1:19:58Like just fooling around for a light switch in the dark.
- 1:20:01I don't know, man. Did.
- 1:20:02You sign an NBA about. It like, I don't know anything
- 1:20:05about these coaches. I know how hard it is to coach.
- 1:20:08I get it, I assume, but for what they're paid.
- 1:20:10But does anybody have any faith in who we're going to hire as
- 1:20:14our athletic director, as our GM, as our president of our
- 1:20:18school? Like, I feel like we've been
- 1:20:20stuck in the past, like their stats, we've been historically
- 1:20:23bad for 50 years and mean it might be time to just change
- 1:20:27everything. Like RIP it like the coach is.
- 1:20:32I don't know, man. We got to have a better leader
- 1:20:35at the top leading the whole place.
- 1:20:37The Hokie Club is a mess. I've said it before, it's just a
- 1:20:39mess. And we're asking donors to
- 1:20:42subsidize all this without a plan.
- 1:20:44And like that, it just, like, just seems like a total chaos
- 1:20:47with Babcock canceling his press conference for the second time
- 1:20:50because of an NDA. Like, I just would like some
- 1:20:54clarity at the top. Like if you're working for a
- 1:20:56company and this is the leadership, are you excited
- 1:20:58about it? You mind, Hey, I'm going to
- 1:21:03apply for a job, but I don't know who my boss is going to be.
- 1:21:06I don't know who my boss's boss is going to be.
- 1:21:08And I don't know who my boss's boss's boss is going to be.
- 1:21:11And my company might be bought by another company or downgraded
- 1:21:15or what I mean, is not important in college football in a few
- 1:21:18years because the conferences have changed.
- 1:21:20Like we got to get our shit together financially everywhere.
- 1:21:25Like, I don't understand why it is so challenging to hire a
- 1:21:29dynamic person like Chris Coleman from Texan was like, why
- 1:21:34isn't Jeff born on this committee?
- 1:21:35And I'm like, I never thought of that.
- 1:21:37You know why? Because it's not my job to think
- 1:21:38of that. But he thought of it and he's
- 1:21:40not paid to do it. Why aren't we making smarter
- 1:21:43decisions at the top to run the place?
- 1:21:45This is my thing so. That's all I got.
- 1:21:47Because we don't. But Phil, it's your fault
- 1:21:49because you don't want to cheat. Use moment at the more, fill it
- 1:21:53full of hookers and get a coach up there.
- 1:21:56Let him have a good time. Doesn't help.
- 1:22:00Anymore. Doesn't move the.
- 1:22:01Needle Like the needle anymore, Tally, it doesn't move.
- 1:22:05The try some different ones, try some, try some lady boys, then
- 1:22:11no that no. That's a that's an Elliott move,
- 1:22:15man. Don't do that.
- 1:22:17That's a different kind of needle moving.
- 1:22:19No, no, seriously. We need better leadership at the
- 1:22:23top, and we always have. We haven't had strong leadership
- 1:22:26at the top of our school when it comes athletics since Torgelsen,
- 1:22:29and that's when Beamer started rolling.
- 1:22:31He understood the importance of athletics and we have not had a
- 1:22:34leader that really understands the importance of athletics.
- 1:22:37He stumbled into an athletic school.
- 1:22:39It feels like they wanted him for research and to grow all
- 1:22:42that He's done it. It's time to move on because now
- 1:22:45we need to move on to something more important.
- 1:22:47So I'm flushed. You make a good point, Phil,
- 1:22:50because it it seemed like over the last two weeks, the
- 1:22:53announcement happened. It felt good.
- 1:22:55Yeah. Search committee sounds great.
- 1:22:58And then shit got sideways several times and I don't.
- 1:23:02Like Brandon's mouth and then the next thing we got, NBA is
- 1:23:06coming out. You get to.
- 1:23:06Point back to one person, it's always whipped.
- 1:23:09Who on that who on that search committee has hired a coach?
- 1:23:13I mean, I know Bruce Arians made Tampa hire their guy.
- 1:23:17But yeah, I don't know. I don't I just don't understand.
- 1:23:20Like just sit back and I don't know.
- 1:23:22And whit there when everybody knows is the lame duck is
- 1:23:25involved too. It's not good.
- 1:23:27So that's my concern. And my other concern is we have
- 1:23:30the 12th best odds to win the damn ACC champion to win the ACC
- 1:23:34this year in basketball. I'm maybe not as I may be overly
- 1:23:37excited and I shouldn't be. That's not good.
- 1:23:39So we could be in trouble. So but we'll see.
- 1:23:41So, but thank y'all, keep it up. You had some thoughts on the on
- 1:23:44the whip front that we had talked about earlier.
- 1:23:47I don't know if you want to talk a little bit more about that as
- 1:23:51we kind of wrap up the the coach chat with some of the stuff that
- 1:23:55came out with the NBA's and all, all the all the awkward post BOV
- 1:24:02vote stuff on that front. Me.
- 1:24:06Sheldon. Sheldon.
- 1:24:07No. But see, I thought I heard my
- 1:24:09grievances. Sheldon.
- 1:24:11What? Sorry.
- 1:24:13Sheldon's trying to watch it go to the commies game and yeah, I
- 1:24:16had to turn. I had to turn the.
- 1:24:18It happens. Now I was I was talking about, I
- 1:24:20know you had some thoughts on the wit front, especially with
- 1:24:23some of the new stuff coming out on the the BOV and.
- 1:24:26Yeah, the yeah, No, I so, yeah. So basically, you know, from
- 1:24:30what I've heard, it's not the most organized search committee.
- 1:24:35You know, I don't, I don't think they've, they've met a ton
- 1:24:37extensively together. You've kind of got like a
- 1:24:39hodgepodge of people from different areas, which, you
- 1:24:42know, maybe can work by also saying it might be too many
- 1:24:44cooks in the kitchen. And I was counting on one of the
- 1:24:48message boards today. It's like, you know, there's a
- 1:24:50reason that athletic directors oversee these hires because it's
- 1:24:53their expertise, it's their job. They're trained to hire head
- 1:24:57coaches and lead the charge and take on that responsibility.
- 1:25:00We've got a situation where you've got an athletic director
- 1:25:03who's essentially neutered, although it seems that wit has
- 1:25:06actually had a lot more responsibility and a lot more
- 1:25:08involvement in this search process.
- 1:25:10Then I think people think that they said he wasn't going to
- 1:25:12participate, but I don't think that's been the case from what
- 1:25:14I've heard. And in in lieu of that, you've
- 1:25:17got an 8 person committee. And I just think it's it's way
- 1:25:20too many hands. People are playing politics, you
- 1:25:22know, saying, Hey, I'm only going to, you know, consider
- 1:25:25these types of people. You know, I want this guy, I
- 1:25:27want that guy. Like it's just not it's, it's
- 1:25:30it's not organized. So I think when you get down to
- 1:25:33it, the, the question people should, should be asking is why
- 1:25:36did we not let WIC go after pride was let go?
- 1:25:40You know, we are, we are essentially have, we essentially
- 1:25:42have a ghost of an athletic director who's, who's not
- 1:25:45participating, participating in the search.
- 1:25:48But also we kind of this I just, I just think it's, it's a, it's
- 1:25:50a train wreck. Yeah, it's it, it's, it is
- 1:25:54definitely something that we're it looks like there wasn't a
- 1:25:57plan. And and I think that's that's
- 1:25:59going to be a problem when it comes time to hire is that, you
- 1:26:03know, folks going places, making moves, uprooting their family,
- 1:26:07all these different big changes that take place when you become
- 1:26:10a head coach somewhere. I think you like to go somewhere
- 1:26:13that has a plan, not just the money plan, but like a plan of
- 1:26:16what they want, how they want to approach the sport, how they a
- 1:26:21plan to raise the funds to get you there.
- 1:26:24It's it's just it still looks like even with more cooks in the
- 1:26:30kitchen that it's still kind of this backwoods mom and pop
- 1:26:35operation because you didn't, you know, sack up and do the
- 1:26:39thing that you needed to do, which was fire wit when you
- 1:26:41fired pry. Yeah.
- 1:26:43And and that's all I'm Tim Sayings and I think it goes back
- 1:26:45to what Phil just said a couple minutes.
- 1:26:47Ago they were too worried about keeping fucking appearances with
- 1:26:50like well he's making this presentation, he's asking for
- 1:26:53money. Can't fire the guy that's asking
- 1:26:55for money. Yes you can because he should
- 1:26:57have asked for money 3 fucking years ago.
- 1:26:59That's the God honest truth and and that's the bigger issue is
- 1:27:02like, I think what Phil said was perfect.
- 1:27:05You truly need a president who's all in on athletics right now.
- 1:27:10He talked about Torkelson. Look up Torkelson.
- 1:27:12It was 2000, I believe he looked before Steiger.
- 1:27:14Is that right? Shelton?
- 1:27:17Former symbols before Steiger, yes.
- 1:27:20Correct. It was early.
- 1:27:21Yeah. So like there are different
- 1:27:25times that ebb and flows for what you need for a university
- 1:27:28and. Great.
- 1:27:30We're Tech's almost an AAU school.
- 1:27:32Wonderful. The research is way up,
- 1:27:35enrollment's getting higher and all this stuff, and you don't
- 1:27:41need that anymore. You are in an era where you need
- 1:27:44someone who is focused on the college experience.
- 1:27:46Athletics is going to be a lot to deal with that.
- 1:27:49Get that guy in here who's willing to operate around that.
- 1:27:54I didn't get to say mine yet because nobody mentioned it
- 1:27:57except somebody in the chat. But the chat.
- 1:27:59We're not letting you. We're not putting your coaching
- 1:28:01stuff on you. Come talk to us.
- 1:28:02We'll do it tonight. Sorry, I'm going to be an ass
- 1:28:04about that, but I'll I'll mention my.
- 1:28:07Put your name on it. Put your name on it, put your
- 1:28:09face on it because I can talk a bunch of stuff behind the the
- 1:28:12the keyboard, but you come in here and there are people that
- 1:28:14have put their names on things and if they get hired and bad
- 1:28:18shit happens, Tally said. He's going to be clipping this
- 1:28:20in a couple years and saying it's y'all's fault.
- 1:28:22That's who y'all wanted to be the head coach.
- 1:28:24But for me, I want Matt Campbell because look what Matt
- 1:28:30Campbell's done at Iowa State the last decade, that thing.
- 1:28:34Iowa State has never been good at football ever, until Matt
- 1:28:37Campbell got there. His current salary is $4.4
- 1:28:40million. I think we can double that in a
- 1:28:43heartbeat. And he is a coach.
- 1:28:46Captain Dwight wanted a coach, right?
- 1:28:49He is a coach. He's not CEO figure, he's a
- 1:28:53coach. Look what he did at Toledo.
- 1:28:55Look what he did at Iowa State. But he can.
- 1:28:57But he's not a Fuentes style. Where?
- 1:29:00He's not. He's anti all those other
- 1:29:03aspects. No, no, no, no.
- 1:29:04He, he, he can do the media stuff.
- 1:29:06You ever hear him talk? Holds good conversations.
- 1:29:10And The thing is, much like where FIFA went to Wisconsin,
- 1:29:13he's stuck in Iowa. You can't recruit great in Iowa
- 1:29:19if you can get him out of Iowa. I got $9.3 million reasons.
- 1:29:23And guess what? Iowa State's budget ain't
- 1:29:25nowhere near that. They cannot afford that.
- 1:29:28So if you want him at Matt Campbell would be your guy.
- 1:29:32Ohio guy as well. Let me ask you this, let me ask
- 1:29:36you this, all right. So when you look at it, you
- 1:29:38know, he, the, the recruiting struggles are kind of
- 1:29:41interesting because I mean, it's fucking Iowa and you're
- 1:29:45recruiting against other big 10 schools.
- 1:29:47So you get, you get some of that.
- 1:29:48You get, you know, there, there's, there's a lot of stuff
- 1:29:51going on there that that can be talked about ad nauseam.
- 1:29:55But at the end of the day, can he get recruiting to where it
- 1:30:01needs to be in Virginia with the in the state of Virginia in the
- 1:30:06Mid-Atlantic? Is, is, is he a guy that can
- 1:30:08make that? Like, obviously he's got some of
- 1:30:10that, you know, Ohio River Valley experience from a
- 1:30:14recruiting standpoint, but you know, does he really have the
- 1:30:17chops to to come in here and, and, and make some big waves in
- 1:30:22the Mid-Atlantic from a recruiting standpoint?
- 1:30:24Well, that's what you'll, I mean, that's what's got to be
- 1:30:26found out. Now, I'll say this.
- 1:30:28Can I ask you a question and I'll ask this to all three of
- 1:30:31y'all. If he comes in here and he goes
- 1:30:34something like 11-9 and eight in his first three seasons, you
- 1:30:38don't think people will be running because he's already
- 1:30:41putting guys in the league. Yeah.
- 1:30:44I think with him it would be more of if he came in
- 1:30:47restructured and it literally went like 7/8/11.
- 1:30:50All those kids that I don't want to go to Virginia Tech, wait a
- 1:30:53second, kids go in the league, They got big in IL, they're on
- 1:30:57TV, they win in 11 games. It just comes down to when it's
- 1:31:02all shit. Yeah, it just comes down to like
- 1:31:05we saying, like if you get somebody who can coach, that
- 1:31:08comes in here, which you're going to have to have the
- 1:31:11recruitment is going to start to do something because Pride was
- 1:31:14not a coach. I mean, he wasn't a head coach.
- 1:31:16Excuse me? I ain't trying to disrespect the
- 1:31:18man. He wasn't a head coach before he
- 1:31:20got here and he came in and for what he was, he recruited well.
- 1:31:25You know, he didn't recruit, you know, top of the college
- 1:31:29leaderboards. But I'm saying from Virginia
- 1:31:31Tech, he came in, he built some bridges and he recruited well.
- 1:31:36So you don't think if you get a coach with a name and a pedigree
- 1:31:40behind him and he comes in here, some kids are going to give him
- 1:31:43a chance if you do. And I, I don't know much about
- 1:31:46Matt Campbell, but I know he's from what I've watched over
- 1:31:50college football, like he's a good coach.
- 1:31:53I know he puts together good teams.
- 1:31:55I know kind of what the identity of the teams that I've seen him
- 1:32:00coaching is. So I can see him coming in and
- 1:32:04winning those close games that we've been losing because as bad
- 1:32:08as we've been, look at this past weekend, we've just lost to a
- 1:32:14top 15 team, you know, by what, 15 points was it?
- 1:32:19What? Yeah, 15 points on a game that
- 1:32:21we played horrible and we didn't have nobody out there really.
- 1:32:24I mean, I don't say nobody, but a lot of the starters that we
- 1:32:27expect to be here and A and A and a fire coach.
- 1:32:30So, yeah, you bring a good coaching in to go play some of
- 1:32:34these games and they start winning a couple of them.
- 1:32:36It's going to change the way some people feel about the, the,
- 1:32:40the university. So Matt Campbell's a good,
- 1:32:43that's a good that's a good name to throw in at Curtis.
- 1:32:46I hadn't thought about him. Hey.
- 1:32:47Steven will give you a pass on that one, buddy.
- 1:32:49Give you a pass. But Steven, to to be honest, if
- 1:32:52you had your kids in the background screaming it, it
- 1:32:55wouldn't. It wouldn't bother us.
- 1:32:57At least it wouldn't. Bother me, Curtis.
- 1:33:00I don't give a shit. Huh?
- 1:33:03What? We used to do it.
- 1:33:04We used to it 100%. We 100% man.
- 1:33:09We, we had some good names tonight and definitely, and
- 1:33:12there's still so many out there that we, I mean, I mean, we, you
- 1:33:15mentioned Shelton, you mentioned John Summerall.
- 1:33:17You think you can't talk about him?
- 1:33:18Because like the the thought in everybody's head is Mark Stoops
- 1:33:22in about 3 weeks going to get fired and John Summerall's going
- 1:33:26to get that job right? Probably.
- 1:33:31Yeah, probably. Shelton.
- 1:33:34I mean, Bulls probably going to get Penn State at this point,
- 1:33:36more than likely so. You said who at Penn State,
- 1:33:41Brian? Rule, Matt.
- 1:33:43Rule. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, they
- 1:33:45definitely, they throw that name out quick.
- 1:33:49Well, yeah, but it's there's still more to be had.
- 1:33:52There's still there's right now, if you asked us, if you asked
- 1:33:56me, in my opinion, what Domino's need to fall before Virginia
- 1:34:01Tech can get their coach, it's Penn State.
- 1:34:03That's it. That's the only domino that has
- 1:34:05to fall. When it comes to Matt Campbell,
- 1:34:09I'm I'm interested because if Fickle does get removed of his
- 1:34:12duties, does that, is that where Campbell is looking?
- 1:34:16And they can pay. So you know.
- 1:34:19It's at that point does. Fickle gets into play on the
- 1:34:22board, like like Josh was talking about earlier.
- 1:34:24So I mean, you know, there's a lot of different directions this
- 1:34:27thing can go. I think we got to see how
- 1:34:30unfortunately, being in the ACC, we're a little bit further down
- 1:34:33the pecking order even relative to schools that we would
- 1:34:36consider ourselves better than overall.
- 1:34:39But they have to get well, let me.
- 1:34:40Let me throw this out. Let me throw this out, Curtis
- 1:34:42and Brian. Yeah, and shell.
- 1:34:45Shell. Here too.
- 1:34:47Shell too, shell too, but just because y'all was talking about
- 1:34:49it. Sorry.
- 1:34:51So out of the we don't have a crystal ball, we don't know
- 1:34:56who's getting fired, but out of the football season and names
- 1:35:01that we've seen that we think may not end the year in stellar
- 1:35:06conditions, who and take James Franklin's name out.
- 1:35:12And I would probably say take Shane's name out because we
- 1:35:14already talked about that. But other coaches who
- 1:35:17potentially will get fired this year out of those coaches or
- 1:35:21what schools do you think would be a good fit in Virginia Tech
- 1:35:27if we hired a coach that was fired, that's not fired yet?
- 1:35:33Like we say, Luke Fickle, Mark Stoops, Mark Novell, trying to
- 1:35:39think of some other names of people who may be gone.
- 1:35:44Hugh Freeze, I don't know, man, he's very unlucky this year.
- 1:35:46But Hugh Freeze, man, just I'm just thinking of screw Saturday.
- 1:35:51Night Hugh Freeze wears out his welcome so fast that.
- 1:35:54Everything. They haven't been Auburn to fire
- 1:35:56him. Every game that Auburn has lost
- 1:35:59this year, he has got screwed. He made a deal with the devil.
- 1:36:06I'm telling you, if you go back and watch that Oklahoma game, he
- 1:36:09got screwed. If you go back and watch that
- 1:36:11Georgia game, they screwed him a couple times.
- 1:36:15Oh, and I can't remember. Who you ever seen, you ever seen
- 1:36:17the ball in somebody go and break the plane of the goal line
- 1:36:19and somehow get ruled A fumble? I walked in on that late
- 1:36:23Saturday night. No, it's just like, that's a
- 1:36:25touchdown. It's fumble that.
- 1:36:26Would have been seven. That would have been 17.
- 1:36:28Oh. It should have.
- 1:36:31Wanted to have time and and. And that would have changed that
- 1:36:34game. Yeah, everybody could.
- 1:36:35And and if you say screw who? Signetti ain't coming here,
- 1:36:38buddy. Signetti ain't coming.
- 1:36:41Here I'd I'd love him to. Come here.
- 1:36:44We had. Our team.
- 1:36:45We fucked. It up but but by the way,
- 1:36:49Signetti is on the bigger and better things my friend.
- 1:36:52Signetti was a You probably would have hired Signetti if
- 1:36:56Fuente hadn't failed because you were scared off of G5 coaches
- 1:37:03with the whole Fuente situation. And so you ended up going a
- 1:37:07little more conventional route, but you went a conventional
- 1:37:09route that still. Had the risk.
- 1:37:12Associated with it because he had never been a head coach
- 1:37:14before. No, but you know what he hired a
- 1:37:17first time coordinator on both sides.
- 1:37:20You know, another one that that like, believe it or not, 2021
- 1:37:26was definitely on our radar. And now he's he's likely going
- 1:37:30to get fired in the next couple weeks.
- 1:37:31Billy naked and and and people are going to scream now he
- 1:37:36fucked up Florida. I think Florida is the toughest
- 1:37:40job in the country, Barnum, I think.
- 1:37:44Florida is a hard place to the culture win.
- 1:37:47It's a hard place to coach and win.
- 1:37:49It's also a place that thrives on getting really good recruits,
- 1:37:53in my opinion. If you look at what Napier did
- 1:37:57at Louisiana, that's usually where you start telling if
- 1:38:00they're a good coach or if they're just.
- 1:38:03He did it three straight seasons down there, 1110 and 12 down in
- 1:38:07Louisiana. What does that probably mean if
- 1:38:10you wanted that many games in G5?
- 1:38:12Because you ain't got the most talent anyway usually.
- 1:38:16You have a little bit probably. Comes if you told me tomorrow or
- 1:38:23fired Billy Napier and we're going to hire and I know a lot
- 1:38:27of people would be like God damn leftovers, God damn retreads and
- 1:38:32he just wanted the right place and he just wanted the right
- 1:38:37place. That's that's something to
- 1:38:40always think about. Sheldon, anybody else?
- 1:38:42I feel like you're reading something.
- 1:38:43Is anybody else maybe going to be on the hot seat that if they
- 1:38:48got fired, you'd be like, yeah, he can come in and probably be
- 1:38:50successful? Yeah.
- 1:38:52I was just looking at some of my my coaches in the, the database
- 1:38:55I built up. I mean, I, I personally don't
- 1:39:01think going after, you know, sitting powerful coaches, in
- 1:39:07most cases it's the smartest idea.
- 1:39:08When you look at some of the numbers, it's actually not, you
- 1:39:10know, the most fruitful decision or like the most, you know, the
- 1:39:15success rates for those coaches don't are way lower than you
- 1:39:17think they would be. You know, G5 coaches tend to do
- 1:39:19a little bit better actually. So that's why I mentioned guys
- 1:39:22like Summerall and sort of feel, you know, kind of wanting those
- 1:39:24guys more. I don't know.
- 1:39:27I just, I just don't know who, who you would get like, you
- 1:39:29know, Jake Dickert, Wake Forest, like he doesn't have a super
- 1:39:33expensive body of work. You know, Fitzgerald's got some
- 1:39:37baggage. I don't know, like it's just
- 1:39:40not, it's, it's not the, the, the group that I would be really
- 1:39:44targeting the most. I, I, I for more proven guys who
- 1:39:46have prior experience and I just think you're going to find more
- 1:39:49of those guys at the G5 level personally.
- 1:39:53What about Charles Huffman? Yes, Charles Huff.
- 1:39:57I, I think he was actually a very good recruiter at Penn
- 1:39:59State. He was one of Penn State's best
- 1:40:01recruiters when he was there. So that's also.
- 1:40:04You know, a plus. Man, if you got to hear like
- 1:40:06Charles Hough, you got to have a good brain.
- 1:40:08You see how big that man's head is?
- 1:40:09He's like Megamind. Hey no, he played in Hampton
- 1:40:13too. Played in Hampton.
- 1:40:16But you know, the other thing with us now, if we take a look
- 1:40:18at him is look, we did it partial.
- 1:40:22Somebody put on there. He did call out the AD because
- 1:40:24he said he wasn't getting funded enough.
- 1:40:25They're like, OK, he can leave and next thing you know, he's
- 1:40:29already having a good season. He's already he's four and two
- 1:40:31down at Southern Mississippi in driver's seat for the Sunbelt,
- 1:40:35that division. Yeah.
- 1:40:38I mean we. We.
- 1:40:39Knew this was when he left. We knew there.
- 1:40:40Was a weird situation in Marshall.
- 1:40:43Because of the way the previous coach had left.
- 1:40:46And then we saw what happened with Huff.
- 1:40:49So like Marshall have some problems maybe even deeper than
- 1:40:52Virginia Tech's when it comes to athletic department structure,
- 1:40:57having a plan, money, all those things.
- 1:41:00They've got some problems on that front.
- 1:41:01So like Huff leaving and moving on to what was considered at
- 1:41:05best, a parallel move doesn't really, really surprise me too
- 1:41:10much because it sounds like, you know, they've got some some big
- 1:41:13problems, especially in the in the sport of football, if not
- 1:41:16kind of across their athletic department there.
- 1:41:19Yeah, and, and we don't. And the whole thing is right
- 1:41:23now, what else is going to open up?
- 1:41:26Because Florida could come open. Some people I've saw people keep
- 1:41:31telling Michigan's going to come open.
- 1:41:32Man, this, this could be one of the biggest years in terms of
- 1:41:37just overall head coach openings that we've seen in forever,
- 1:41:40which is probably not great for us because a lot of these jobs
- 1:41:44are, are pretty high profile. Whether it's in the ACC, there's
- 1:41:48you're going to be a couple, potentially a couple SCC jobs
- 1:41:50open already. You got a couple, you know, Big
- 1:41:5410 jobs that will be open more than likely.
- 1:41:57So I mean, it's going to be kind of the wild, Wild West.
- 1:41:59I'm hoping that we are high enough in the pecking order
- 1:42:03based on what we can offer financially, where some of the
- 1:42:06other stuff doesn't matter as much.
- 1:42:11And then you got to think about we, all we've had on tonight are
- 1:42:14current head coaches, right? I don't think we've mentioned a
- 1:42:18coordinator, and I don't think anybody wants a coordinator
- 1:42:21hire, but there's also quite a few head coaches not coaching
- 1:42:26anywhere right now. I'm very shocked somebody put
- 1:42:29Jon Gruden's fucking name in the fucking chat tonight.
- 1:42:32No, no, it might be a little bit more intelligent than I thought.
- 1:42:35We did not see Jon Gruden in there.
- 1:42:37Thank the. Lord, somebody asked about Jimbo
- 1:42:39a couple weeks ago. I do not want Jimbo.
- 1:42:42Jimbo needs to get somewhere like Arkansas.
- 1:42:46Jimbo, Jimbo needs to go somewhere.
- 1:42:50I mean, Jimbo wears out his welcome pretty fast as well.
- 1:42:52Like we see him, he comes in, he he starts the fire and then he
- 1:42:57he puts it out himself and gets the fuck out of dodge and let
- 1:42:59leaves everybody else hand in the ashes.
- 1:43:02You mean to you like if, if, if I'm the player's parent just
- 1:43:06because of what he's done with quarterbacks, I tell Michigan
- 1:43:10like just go hire him for the three you paying my son all this
- 1:43:13money? Go hire the the guy who could
- 1:43:16put some quarterbacks in the league because he has been a
- 1:43:19good offensive coordinated quarterback coach for the most
- 1:43:22of his career until Michigan comes open.
- 1:43:26I mean that that that day it's going to whim on what Underwood
- 1:43:30wants to do. Underwood's probably going to
- 1:43:33get conduct interviews for that head coaching position as much
- 1:43:38as they're paying. Luckily we do not have that
- 1:43:41problem or unwelcome. We have had that problem but.
- 1:43:45Hey, just real quick, I want to address something right quick.
- 1:43:47I know we're getting ready to get out of here because I see
- 1:43:50Eric has joined the chat and he's asking a couple of
- 1:43:52questions about why people want wit fired and he's made some
- 1:43:56great highs and you know other stuff besides football that
- 1:44:00don't fucking matter. Eric, football is the cash cow.
- 1:44:06You cannot hire 3 bad coaches or three coaches that don't work
- 1:44:10out in football at most schools. He can do great in basketball,
- 1:44:15baseball, swimming, wrestling. They are not generating money in
- 1:44:22those sports. For the most part.
- 1:44:23Football is driving the bus. You need AAD that is focused on
- 1:44:30making what makes you money better and he hadn't done that,
- 1:44:35so he's got to go. That's why everybody.
- 1:44:36He also has not brought those sports to a point where you're
- 1:44:39at least winning national titles in either.
- 1:44:42Like if if we were, if we had a couple national titles to show
- 1:44:46for the fact that football is falling the fuck off.
- 1:44:48I think you could make a case of, Oh well, he re prioritized
- 1:44:52and we're seeing the fruits of that labor.
- 1:44:54We're not really seeing the fruits of that labor.
- 1:44:56I mean, more or less, with a couple exceptions, the athletic
- 1:45:00department is only a little bit better than his predecessor.
- 1:45:03Top to bottom, there's only one sport.
- 1:45:05Yeah. So only one sport that is.
- 1:45:08But football is significantly worse during his tenure.
- 1:45:12So at the end of the day, football brings the dollars.
- 1:45:15Basketball and and women's basketball were #2 there.
- 1:45:19But the outside of a one run, I mean, those, those teams haven't
- 1:45:24really, you know, been world beaters in terms of deep runs
- 1:45:29and things that are getting your your athletic program national
- 1:45:32attention. So at the end of the day,
- 1:45:36there's not a lot to show for him doing so good in these other
- 1:45:38sports. And football has fallen all the
- 1:45:40way off. I mean.
- 1:45:41So yes, you got to get it fixed. He did hire foot.
- 1:45:46He also extended it. He also didn't fire.
- 1:45:48When it was time to fire, he made a Really his hiring Fuente
- 1:45:53was probably maybe the cherry on top.
- 1:45:56But as soon as all of Frank's players left, all those old
- 1:46:00heads got off. It went like this and then he
- 1:46:03had a Heisman type quarterback that somehow he ran out of town.
- 1:46:07Yeah, well, I think the other thing went to him.
- 1:46:09He. Was a good coach, there's no
- 1:46:10question. About that.
- 1:46:12That's the thing though, and and what Dwight was saying earlier,
- 1:46:14he's like the coach is important.
- 1:46:16Yes, that is, but he talked about you still have to be able
- 1:46:19to do the other things. And one part of being a coach is
- 1:46:23being able to recruit the state that you coach in.
- 1:46:26The other part is being able to bring in money for the program.
- 1:46:29If you can't do those things, even even if you're not doing it
- 1:46:33at the elite level. Like one one of the one of the
- 1:46:35things Pride did pretty well, he hit the ground running
- 1:46:38recruiting and he was able to talk to donors.
- 1:46:40Now, he didn't necessarily knock it out of the park with donors,
- 1:46:42but he was able to have conversations with donors that
- 1:46:45at least got the needle moving. From a financial standpoint,
- 1:46:50Fuente couldn't do that. You can't.
- 1:46:53You've got to be able to coach, but you can't just be a coach.
- 1:46:56Not not if you're if you're AP4 coach, you can do that at G5.
- 1:47:00You can't do that in the P4. Hey, I got to give a shout out
- 1:47:04right quick. I'm pretty sure it's my Barber
- 1:47:06is in the chat tonight. Dave the Barber is my Barber.
- 1:47:11Yes, yeah, that's my Barber, man.
- 1:47:13Dave the Barber, that's my guy. So he's joined us tonight at
- 1:47:18Don't look at me right now. I got to go visit him.
- 1:47:21It was homecoming week for Alabama A&M.
- 1:47:23He was booked up. Shame on Dave for being booked
- 1:47:26up. He stays.
- 1:47:27Booked up today's. Good, but that's my guy.
- 1:47:31He put up Jed Fish. I don't know, man.
- 1:47:34I mean, I would like to see a little bit more wins, but you
- 1:47:38know, we'll see. We'll see how it goes.
- 1:47:40Not saying he and a good coach, I think he's done a decent job
- 1:47:43at the stops he's been at at Washington now.
- 1:47:46So yeah, that's another name just that I hadn't hadn't seen
- 1:47:51anybody bring up so but shout out to my Barbara David.
- 1:47:55Barbara David, All righty. We got anything else to wrap up
- 1:48:01tonight? It's been a good one.
- 1:48:03I love the discourse in the chat.
- 1:48:04I love folks opinions. I love it when I agree with
- 1:48:06them. I love when I disagree with
- 1:48:08them. It's what makes it fun.
- 1:48:09It what makes it a lot of fun. Yeah, and I mean like even if if
- 1:48:13we disagree what you're talking about, I appreciate y'all
- 1:48:15jumping in there and and letting those opinions be heard.
- 1:48:18I think it makes what we do more interesting.
- 1:48:21It does. So we appreciate that engagement
- 1:48:24and keep it coming, man. Definitely, man, definitely
- 1:48:26appreciate any time that we do this, man, everybody's always,
