- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:13I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:17youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:21Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:23OK, I'm actually excited because today it's not actually mini
- 0:25scroll. I should have changed the sign.
- 0:26It's actually a mini deep dive. So it's like Mini Scroll but one
- 0:30big story. And we've done a couple of
- 0:33these, but I don't think I've done one in like maybe a year.
- 0:36And this story is so mini scroll coded.
- 0:39I was like, this needs to be the whole episode.
- 0:42So before I get into it, Please remember to rate, review, and
- 0:44subscribe. We're trying to get to 1000
- 0:46Spotify star ratings. It helps us so much.
- 0:48It helps us grow and sign up to our Patreon.
- 0:51If you guys want some extra content, some behind the scenes,
- 0:54some more like personal parasocial stuff, that's what we
- 0:57post there. All right, let's get into the
- 0:59story. So today we are covering the
- 1:01controversy going on between a TikTok hockey creator named Pavi
- 1:07and Bauer the brand. So this story hits both sides of
- 1:12our audience, The side that loves the drama, loves intranet
- 1:16culture, and then the side of our audience that are in this
- 1:20industry. So in social media, in
- 1:21marketing, working for brands and who listen to the pod
- 1:25because it helps them with their job.
- 1:27So this actually is a lesson for all of us.
- 1:30So Bauer, the hockey gear brand, has found itself at the center
- 1:34of a major controversy where their social media comments are
- 1:37being flooded with outcry and long time customers are saying
- 1:40they're switching hockey gear brands.
- 1:42All because of a video that a TikTok creator posted promoting
- 1:48some of their new products and how the brand responded to that
- 1:53initial video. I'm going to be saying allegedly
- 1:55a lot here because I really want to cover this story, but I am
- 1:58kind of scared as it seems Bauer may be slightly litigious.
- 2:01OK so who is involved in this? Bauer the hockey gear brand as I
- 2:06mentioned, allegedly an employee named Brandon who works for
- 2:10Bauer and a TikTok creator named Pavi.
- 2:13So Pavi is a hockey creator, she's a goalie and a
- 2:16self-proclaimed quote gear nerd. So the majority of her content
- 2:20is based around hockey drills, hockey plays, reviewing hockey
- 2:24gear, showing off her new gear, and also showing people how to
- 2:28use hockey gear in various ways to protect yourself.
- 2:31At the time of recording she has 9500 followers and this has
- 2:36blown up over the past week, so I don't actually know what her
- 2:39follower account was before this, but regardless, she's
- 2:41still under 10K so she's still quite a niche creator.
- 2:44So Pavi made a video showcasing the 2026 Bower hockey gear
- 2:48catalog. This is a free catalog that you
- 2:51can find online to download and I believe hers was sent to her
- 2:54in the mail. In this video she was showing
- 2:56parts of the catalog explaining she's excited for, you know, new
- 3:00pieces of gear that's coming and she even said in a follow up
- 3:03video that she he's been quote using Bauer since she was a kid
- 3:07and her whole goalie setup is Bauer.
- 3:10OK, so as a Canadian who grew up immersed in hockey culture
- 3:13myself, my brother played hockey his whole life.
- 3:17All all my boyfriends played hockey, tons of my friends
- 3:19played hockey. And it's like if you're a
- 3:21Canadian, you understand the chokehold that hockey has on
- 3:25suburban white culture. Something you need to understand
- 3:28about this story and with that context is that it's kind of a
- 3:31thing for hockey players to have like 1 brand that they are loyal
- 3:35to. And so for Pavi, that was
- 3:37apparently Bauer. Also, I feel like hockey is
- 3:39having such a moment right now, which is partly why this is
- 3:42blown up so much. And also, I was looking at
- 3:45myself before I started recording.
- 3:46So you guys know, I'm on like a hair growing journey.
- 3:48And she's really, she's really struggling.
- 3:50But you know, I'm at that in between phase, OK, where I'm
- 3:53trying not to put heat on it. She's looking a little bit wispy
- 3:57at the end because we're trying not to cut it as often either.
- 3:59So we can just like grow and then we can do a proper chop.
- 4:02Anyways, I was looking at myself before I started recording and I
- 4:04was like, I look like a hockey bro.
- 4:06Like this is the hair that they all had when I was growing up
- 4:08when it was final season of finals.
- 4:10Oh my God, am I OK? Yeah, finals, hockey finals, and
- 4:13they would all bleach their hair and half of them have like
- 4:15really long hair. Like I look like a hockey brat
- 4:17right now with my new hair. And I know some of you guys have
- 4:19been hating on the hair in the comments, but this is the
- 4:21journey that we're on right now. OK, so the brand saw Pavi's
- 4:24video, a video again that was like organic user generated
- 4:29social media content, the kind of content that brands dream of.
- 4:33It was a video showing a free catalog items that were
- 4:38reportedly published in a catalog that is publicly
- 4:41available and accessible. And they sent her Adm they said
- 4:45hey there, we're interested in partnering with your account.
- 4:48Can you let us know the best e-mail address to reach out to?
- 4:52To which she responded is this real life and capital letters So
- 4:55cute. And then presumably sent her
- 4:56e-mail. When I got that e-mail, I was
- 4:58really excited. I've been using Bauer since I
- 5:00was a kid. My whole goalie setup is Bauer.
- 5:04However, when the brand emailed her, it was apparently not
- 5:07actually about a partnership at all.
- 5:10So Pavi shared screenshots of an alleged e-mail she received from
- 5:13a person named Brandon, who works at Bauer, who claimed that
- 5:17the content she showed in her video was their intellectual
- 5:20property and implied they may take legal action if she didn't
- 5:24remove the video. Pavi did take down the video in
- 5:27question. This is what the e-mail
- 5:29reportedly said. This is Brandon reaching out
- 5:31from the Bauer social media team.
- 5:33We enjoy your content and your hockey equipment reviews.
- 5:36We appreciate the time and creativity that goes into
- 5:38creating your content and would love to see you continue you to
- 5:40grow your page. We want to make you aware that
- 5:42Bauer Hockey is the author and publisher of its sales catalogs,
- 5:46which contain copyright protected photographs, images
- 5:49and product descriptions, as well as the copyright owner of
- 5:51our product images online. We own exclusive rights under
- 5:55United States and Canadian copyright law in and to the
- 5:58images and descriptions contained in our sales catalogs
- 6:02and product photos without authorization.
- 6:04Your TikTok account reproduces and displays exact copies of
- 6:08Bauer's Hockey sales catalog materials, for example, the
- 6:12January 21, 2026 Supreme Fuse Goalie and Player Gear posts.
- 6:17This is copyright infringement. We'd like to avoid having our
- 6:20legal team get involved, but that would require you to remove
- 6:23these posts immediately and stop posting reproductions of our
- 6:26catalog or our photographs. Please let us know if you have
- 6:30any questions about this. So Pavi reportedly responded,
- 6:34removed the videos. You should have started out with
- 6:36that and not that you guys wanted to partner with me.
- 6:39If you told me just to remove it, I would have without the
- 6:41partnering portion of it. And then the person responded.
- 6:44We appreciate the quick action and response.
- 6:47Community engagement and collaboration with hockey
- 6:49content creators are highly important to us.
- 6:51But first and foremost, it's important we ensure all activity
- 6:54aligns to rules and regulations, especially when it relates to
- 6:57unreleased products. I don't, I mean, I guess maybe
- 7:00some of the products were unreleased in the catalog, but
- 7:03like the catalog was released, it wasn't an embargoed catalog
- 7:06as far as we know. It was all in this free
- 7:09accessible catalog. Please feel free to reach out
- 7:11with any product or content related questions going forward.
- 7:15Best Brandon. OK, so as you can gather from
- 7:18this, the brand seemingly obtained her e-mail under
- 7:21deceptive pretenses, which in my opinion is unethical and also
- 7:25just a horrible way to lose trust with your customers,
- 7:29especially somebody who we know loves your brand and was
- 7:31promoting you in her video. It's just bizarre.
- 7:34They could have absolutely done what she said, which is just ask
- 7:37in the DM, the initial DM to take it down.
- 7:40They could have commented on the initial video and asked her to
- 7:42take it down. They didn't need to kind of
- 7:44pretend that they were going to like partner with her and then
- 7:47sent her this e-mail. So then Patty posted her video
- 7:49about this, showing these emails and explaining the situation.
- 7:53On January 27th. As this got more traction, Bauer
- 7:57then sent her a new e-mail, allegedly from the wider social
- 8:01media team. At this time, we saw your video
- 8:03and want to apologize. We should have approached our
- 8:05outreach differently. Our intent was to protect our
- 8:08intellectual property, but we recognize that our DM was
- 8:11misleading and caused frustration when unreleased or
- 8:14copyrighted assets are shared. It's important for us to act
- 8:17quickly, but we should have handled the situation better.
- 8:19We value the hockey creator community and appreciate the
- 8:22role you play in it. If you're interested, we'd love
- 8:23to have you test out our new Supreme Goalie gear when it
- 8:27launches the spring. Again, we apologize and we hope
- 8:29to have the opportunity to collaborate in the future.
- 8:31And then she responded saying I appreciate you acknowledging
- 8:34that the way the situation was handled was not appropriate.
- 8:36I wish I'd been contacted directly and asked to remove the
- 8:39post as I would have done so immediately.
- 8:42The approach of initially framing this as a collab and
- 8:44then changing course was unexpected and unnecessary.
- 8:47I create hockey content and videos purely for enjoyment.
- 8:50I do not get paid for anything and it is something I do because
- 8:53I genuinely love the game and the community around it.
- 8:55Because of how this was handled, I am unsure how to respond to
- 8:58your offer. She talks about how she's been
- 9:00using their gear for 15 plus years and she is thoroughly
- 9:04disappointed. I think you should be more
- 9:06concerned about the counterfeit Bauer sticks and gear people are
- 9:08selling online. I get that different companies
- 9:11have different processes for copyright infringement, and I
- 9:14understand how serious that can be, especially given we work in
- 9:17media. Like I get it, copyright is a
- 9:20huge problem here, like people stealing content, people taking
- 9:23content, people using content that doesn't belong to them,
- 9:26whatever. Like that is a genuine problem.
- 9:28However, to use Pavi's wording here, this situation felt
- 9:33unnecessary and definitely like a misstep.
- 9:36So there's a lot of social media theories floating around as to
- 9:39what actually happened here. Like marketing managers are
- 9:42chiming in, legal for different corporations are chiming in.
- 9:46So a lot of users are saying the only Brandon who works at the
- 9:49company, I suppose according to LinkedIn, is some type of
- 9:52creative director. So one of the theories that
- 9:55users have is this person is protective of his work and went
- 9:58rogue without, you know, the larger legal team, the larger
- 10:02marketing team possibly knowing. Another theory is that Brandon
- 10:05is just like an AI agent used for customer service.
- 10:09It's not, you know, an actual person that works for the
- 10:12company. It's one of various names that
- 10:13they would put on, you know, their customer service emails.
- 10:16I have seen some speculation in the comments from users who
- 10:18claim to be in corporate law saying they don't believe that
- 10:21Bowers legal team would have anything to do with these emails
- 10:24and that the legal team is probably so pissed over this
- 10:27situation. And of course, now that this is
- 10:29blown up for Pavi, people are doubting how loyal she has
- 10:32actually been to the brand. So like most people are on her
- 10:35side, of course, but then there's like this subset of the
- 10:37Internet, as there always is when anything goes viral.
- 10:40This is not specifically about her.
- 10:42You know, who are like, well, this brand will probably never
- 10:44actually do this to a really loyal customer.
- 10:46Like, do you really have that much stuff from Bauer?
- 10:49So she actually made a video showing how much gear she has
- 10:51purchased over the years from Bauer, as if that matters.
- 10:54But anyways, and then Bauer allegedly reposted her video and
- 11:00when I say allegedly, that's because Pavi responded like in
- 11:03her own comment section and wrote no way Bauer reposted
- 11:07this. They did not watch the whole
- 11:08video. And then she said they UN
- 11:10reposted it, but she had a screenshot of the repost.
- 11:14So shortly after that situation. Then Pavi did say that warrior
- 11:18hockey, which is another gear brand has reached out to her to
- 11:21partner and they were also in the comments sections of a lot
- 11:25of videos people like covering this on TikTok being like, don't
- 11:28worry, we've got her back and stuff like that.
- 11:30So other hockey gear brands are jumping on this opportunity.
- 11:33Absolutely. And now the latest update is
- 11:35that Bauer has apologized on a public YouTube video about the
- 11:40situation. And Pavi talked about this on
- 11:43her stories. So she brought on her TikTok
- 11:45story. So she put a screenshot of the
- 11:48comment section from a YouTube video that was covering this.
- 11:50And she wrote, no way. Bauer apologized on a YouTube
- 11:52video and couldn't even e-mail me directly.
- 11:54Wow. So it's from Bauer Hockey.
- 11:56And they wrote, plain and simple, we made a mistake and
- 11:58handled this incorrectly. We're seeing the feedback and we
- 12:01take responsibility. Supporting hockey content
- 12:03creators is important to us and we're committed to doing better.
- 12:06OK, this is actually crazy because Bauer commented on a
- 12:09YouTube video about what happened apologizing, but
- 12:13couldn't apologize to me via e-mail.
- 12:18What? It's just blowing my mind that
- 12:21they literally stuck their apology into a YouTube video
- 12:25about what's going on with the Bauer controversy and couldn't
- 12:29directly e-mail me and say hey sorry for what's going on like
- 12:32whatever blah blah blah. What what?
- 12:35I don't want an apology anymore at this point.
- 12:37This is sorry. I just took a shower but this is
- 12:38absolutely like, I didn't think I'd find an apology from Bauer
- 12:42in a YouTube video that I didn't make.
- 12:46Apologizing for what? Look no bye.
- 12:49OK, so the sub stack silence brand covered this and here's
- 12:52what the author Dana Castillo wrote which I think is perfect,
- 12:56she wrote quote. The issue was not the copyright
- 12:58claim itself, but how it was delivered and to whom.
- 13:01Bauer responded as if Pavi were committing a serious
- 13:04infringement rather than expressing genuine fandom.
- 13:07In a sport where brand loyalty runs deep, this response felt
- 13:10alienating rather than protective.
- 13:12This was a misunderstanding of Internet culture and how fans
- 13:16engage. And that is literally a mic
- 13:17drop. Because if you guys have
- 13:19followed many and you guys follow me, you know how adamant
- 13:23I am that brands need to have Internet culture, journalists,
- 13:28experts, consultants involved in consumer marketing.
- 13:33This was obviously not like a campaign that went wrong.
- 13:36We often see that. But this kind of response is
- 13:38exactly what Dana is saying here.
- 13:41There is such a misunderstanding of fandom culture and Internet
- 13:45culture and how people engage on TikTok and all of that that has
- 13:49led to this misstep. In my opinion.
- 13:51I'm a huge advocate for the fact that these experts and these
- 13:55consultants, we are, some of them need to be in these rooms.
- 13:59They need to be working much closer with brands.
- 14:01And you know, these missteps are just it's going to keep getting
- 14:04bigger and bigger as the Internet quickly evolves.
- 14:07It's like think about how much has changed online in just the
- 14:10last like 5 or 6 years. The pace of change is only
- 14:13getting more rapid, especially with AI.
- 14:15So to end off, I actually did reach out to Pavi for her own
- 14:19statement and here's what she said to me.
- 14:21Honestly this whole thing is super overwhelming.
- 14:23I wish Bauer one just told me the straight truth of why they
- 14:26wanted my e-mail and didn't do a bait and switch.
- 14:29They actually half ass apologized on a YouTube video
- 14:31recently someone made covering it and they're getting roasted
- 14:34for it. I'm trying my best to read and
- 14:36respond, slash acknowledge every comment and DM.
- 14:39The support has been amazing. Unfortunately Bauer is deleting
- 14:42the funny comments people are making on their page.
- 14:44I truly cannot imagine how overwhelming this whole
- 14:47situation would be going viral for something like this.
- 14:50I think going viral for anything is overwhelming, but especially
- 14:52when people are largely on your side.
- 14:54It's like, on one hand, a good way to go viral, but I also
- 14:58imagine it's very, very overwhelming.
- 14:59You feel kind of guilty possibly for putting a brand on blast
- 15:02like this. Like I imagine there's just a
- 15:04lot of mixed emotions. I'm not putting words in her
- 15:06mouth. I have no idea if she feels
- 15:07guilty or not, but I'm just thinking there's probably so
- 15:10many different emotions that she's feeling in this moment and
- 15:14getting all this attention. Because I think initially this
- 15:16video and this whole controversy really was within the hockey
- 15:19community. And then over the past couple of
- 15:21days, it has really expanded beyond that.
- 15:23And I do think, like I said before, hockey's having its
- 15:26moment, right? Heated rivalry.
- 15:28It's having a I mean, all the smut, all the hockey smut in
- 15:32book talk like that was super popular before heated rivalry.
- 15:34So you know, hockey is part of the zeitgeist right now.
- 15:37And this could have been such a major opportunity for Bauer and
- 15:41unfortunately now it seems like a lot of their competitors are
- 15:44going to take that opportunity from them.
- 15:46Anyways, guys, that's it for our little mini deep dive today on
- 15:49this Friday. Thank you so much for listening.
- 15:51I love you guys. Please remember to rate, review
- 15:54and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 15:57I might talk to you on Monday. We'll see depending on how it
- 16:00goes in Melbourne. Either way, I will talk to you
- 16:03on Tuesday. OK, bye.
