- 0:08Speaker 1: Podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only game show where
- 0:12Speaker 2: conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spencer Newhart and today
- 0:17Speaker 2: we're joined by Randall, Brody, Corey, Logan, Tresa and Max.
- 0:21Speaker 2: This is a ten round quiz show with questions from
- 0:23Speaker 2: meat eaters four verticals which are hunting, fishing, conservation, and cooking,
- 0:27Speaker 2: and there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five
- 0:29Speaker 2: hundred dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing
- 0:33Speaker 2: and for the stat of the week. This week we're
- 0:35Speaker 2: looking at the overtime drought that we're currently in. We
- 0:39Speaker 2: haven't had a game go to overtime since December fourth,
- 0:42Speaker 2: meaning we're on an eleven week overtime drought. This breaks
- 0:46Speaker 2: our previous record of ten straight weeks without overtime.
- 0:49Speaker 1: That's serious stuff.
- 0:51Speaker 2: It's been a while. The last time we actually went
- 0:53Speaker 2: to overtime, the question was how many tea spoons are
- 0:56Speaker 2: in one point two five cups? What was the answer, Brody?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Do you still know? It was sixty? But you got
- 1:04Speaker 2: a dead nuts That day we had an eleven hundred
- 1:06Speaker 2: dollars donation because we went to overtime with Randall and
- 1:09Speaker 2: Brody having perfect games, and then you got the overtime question.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Exactly how did.
- 1:15Speaker 3: You like calculate that?
- 1:18Speaker 4: I think it comes out to is it three per
- 1:21Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 1:22Speaker 5: There's three teaspoons at a tablespoon, and I don't remember
- 1:25Speaker 5: how many I forget.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Your kid sure likes measuring stuff at home in the kitchen.
- 1:30Speaker 2: So you said they gave you a big advantage and
- 1:33Speaker 2: it did.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he just made me a nice loaf of
- 1:37Speaker 4: banana pecan bread last night's great.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Oh so, eleven straight weeks with no overtime. All right,
- 1:48Speaker 2: here's our Infrequently Asked question segment. If you have a
- 1:51Speaker 2: trivia related question for our crew, send it to Trivia
- 1:55Speaker 2: at the mediater dot com with the subject line I
- 1:57Speaker 2: F a Q. John Schlessinger says, what kind of PhD
- 2:01Speaker 2: does doctor Randall have? And more importantly, where can we
- 2:04Speaker 2: read his dissertation? He'll tell you.
- 2:08Speaker 6: I find it hard to believe that that's an infrequently
- 2:10Speaker 6: asked question.
- 2:12Speaker 7: Is well, PhD? You mean professional hunting degree?
- 2:15Speaker 1: That would be nice? That would be nice. Steve has
- 2:18Speaker 1: another acronym that he likes to do.
- 2:20Speaker 2: What is it?
- 2:22Speaker 1: Pretty huge?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Okay, Philip Blank, No, I have a PhD.
- 2:28Speaker 6: In history from the University of Montana. I earned that
- 2:32Speaker 6: in twenty fifteen. And if you'd like to read the dissertation,
- 2:39Speaker 6: you'll need to contact the University of Montana Library because
- 2:43Speaker 6: it's not publicly available.
- 2:45Speaker 2: I have we could publish it on our website.
- 2:48Speaker 6: I have vague aspirations at some point of reworking it
- 2:52Speaker 6: into something that would be for popular consumption.
- 2:55Speaker 7: Actually see Randall and right after it's probably right after
- 2:59Speaker 7: you got your PhD.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Yeah, on Stars in the Sky. Oh no, that was
- 3:06Speaker 1: that was prior to your pe. No, that was like
- 3:08Speaker 1: a year or two afterwards. But I did do a
- 3:11Speaker 1: meet Eater.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Podcast, like episode twelve or something right after, probably a month.
- 3:19Speaker 2: After I found that Fresh Doctor.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, one of the first, very first mediater episodes.
- 3:24Speaker 2: But what what was your dissertation.
- 3:26Speaker 6: About hunting in American politics and culture in the twentieth century?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Oh?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Yeah, he talked about it last night in the Life Tour.
- 3:35Speaker 7: You should do an adndom to that for the twenty
- 3:38Speaker 7: first century.
- 3:38Speaker 2: There you get it's changed. Oh a lot, a lot.
- 3:41Speaker 2: That's above a doctor, A double doctor.
- 3:43Speaker 1: No, you do, a good doctor. I mean great.
- 3:47Speaker 6: I don't think there's anything better than a PhD Spencer.
- 3:52Speaker 6: But yeah, I mean advanced advanced degrees in the humanities,
- 3:57Speaker 6: just a ticket to a lucrative and fulfilling life.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Brodie, you're disrupting the camera shot right now.
- 4:04Speaker 1: That's my camera.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yes, you're covering Randall perfect.
- 4:09Speaker 2: That is an if you from our trivia question go
- 4:12Speaker 2: John Schlessinger, him and Leland Hart send me more questions
- 4:16Speaker 2: than probably every other listener.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Court he tunes in every week.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Radio, Thank you John, Thank you Leland.
- 4:23Speaker 1: All right, love you guys.
- 4:25Speaker 2: We have some housekeeping. The long waited Meat Eater Tournament
- 4:28Speaker 2: is on the horizon. We expect to have the three
- 4:31Speaker 2: episode tournament out between the end of February and the
- 4:34Speaker 2: beginning of March, where we'll crown a twenty twenty four
- 4:37Speaker 2: Meat Eater Trivia champion. So coming soon.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's exciting.
- 4:43Speaker 2: It's like it's it's weird that it's you know, obviously
- 4:46Speaker 2: happening in March. The year after it will act like
- 4:49Speaker 2: it's like you know, the NBA Finals during COVID where
- 4:52Speaker 2: they had to like.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Rush it back a few It would be fun to
- 4:55Speaker 6: go into a bubble, not the trivia bubble with the
- 4:58Speaker 6: Gang Disney.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, good bass fishing. Yeah, so that that is coming soon,
- 5:05Speaker 2: all right. The Shelby Index fort today is a four,
- 5:08Speaker 2: so our winner should get eight correct answers. If that
- 5:11Speaker 2: we're onto the game eight Trivia play the drop film.
- 5:17Speaker 2: I need to know what I stay and win everything.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Just tend to win.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Everything before we start, Spencer, I stay for that tournament
- 5:36Speaker 7: for like football games they do like the Little Player profiles.
- 5:40Speaker 8: Dudes come out and answer like, yeah, some of those
- 5:48Speaker 8: give some b roll of you guys looking all smart.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I can pull that off, all right. Question one the
- 5:55Speaker 2: topic is ecology, and this will be multiple choice. Which
- 5:59Speaker 2: state is is not included in the Corn Belt? According
- 6:03Speaker 2: to the us DA, is it Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota, or
- 6:10Speaker 2: South Dakota. Three of those states are part of the
- 6:15Speaker 2: Corn Belt. One is not? Is it Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota,
- 6:21Speaker 2: or South Dakota. Max wasn't supposed to play trivia today,
- 6:25Speaker 2: and when he found out that he was, he says, well,
- 6:27Speaker 2: then you ought to throw me a bone. And I
- 6:29Speaker 2: had this question written before Max was going to show up.
- 6:32Speaker 2: But he's lived in Minnesota, he's lived in South Dakota.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Question one is is that firmly a bone?
- 6:38Speaker 9: I haven't lived in Minnesota, North Dkota, South Dakota, Montana.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I assumed you spent some time in your Grandma Moth
- 6:44Speaker 2: place is in right on the Red River. Yeah, I
- 6:46Speaker 2: knew that.
- 6:48Speaker 1: That's from the game you Wan Trivia.
- 6:50Speaker 2: There you go.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I wonder if this is a bone for anybody from Ohio.
- 6:54Speaker 9: Yeah, is there anyone from Ohio?
- 6:55Speaker 2: I don't know, Logan, Yes, we'll never know which. It
- 7:00Speaker 2: is included in the Corn Belt according to the USDA, Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota,
- 7:09Speaker 2: or South Dakota. Is everybody ready?
- 7:14Speaker 7: Are we? Yeah?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Max? Max was quick to answer. You feel good about
- 7:18Speaker 2: your answer? Max? About you ready?
- 7:20Speaker 6: Let me? I actually don't feel great about my time.
- 7:22Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Again.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Three of these states are part of what the USDA
- 7:27Speaker 2: defines as the Corn Belt. One of them is not Nebraska, Ohio, Minnesota,
- 7:32Speaker 2: South Dakota. Go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 7:36Speaker 2: Tresa saying Nebraska, Cordy says Ohio, Randall says Ohio, Logan
- 7:43Speaker 2: says Minnesota, Max says Ohio. Brody crossed out Minnesota and
- 7:49Speaker 2: wrote down South Dakota. So we have every answer I
- 7:51Speaker 2: think representative in here today. We got one correct answer.
- 7:55Speaker 2: The correct answer is South Dakota only Brody, Yeah, I
- 8:01Speaker 2: got that one.
- 8:02Speaker 5: I don't know if you guys caught this, but but
- 8:04Speaker 5: Max made a funny little joke and asked to see
- 8:07Speaker 5: Brodie's answer, which is normally what Brody does to Max.
- 8:09Speaker 3: And then after after.
- 8:11Speaker 5: Brody showed Max's answers that I don't know what face
- 8:14Speaker 5: Max made, But Brodi, you changed your answer after.
- 8:17Speaker 9: But I didn't think he was gonna write down South Dakota.
- 8:20Speaker 2: In two thousand and six, the USDA declared the corn
- 8:23Speaker 2: Belt to be a six state region consisting of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska,
- 8:30Speaker 2: and Ohio. Encyclopedia Britannica disagree slightly, saying Ohio isn't in
- 8:35Speaker 2: the corn Belt, but Kansas is neither place include South
- 8:39Speaker 2: Dakota in the corn Belt, though.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I was thinking of the Encyclopedia Britannica.
- 8:43Speaker 2: You knew that death corn Belt, Well isn't the states?
- 8:46Speaker 10: Like what are we what are we doing?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yes, that's where South Dakota is.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Nice, South Dakota right here.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Ohio is way.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Way over there here. Uh huh. It's it's like a
- 8:57Speaker 2: contiguous region the corn Belt that they defined, and then
- 9:00Speaker 2: I was like, I was also surprised about their definition.
- 9:03Speaker 2: So I looked at like what states produced the most corn,
- 9:06Speaker 2: and Minnesota actually produces twice as much corn as South Dakota.
- 9:10Speaker 2: So South Dakota not part of the corn belt.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Wow.
- 9:12Speaker 9: If I was putting money on that, I would not
- 9:14Speaker 9: put money on South Dakota.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Question two.
- 9:17Speaker 7: That's why you got the question wrong.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Yeah, South Dakota has the corn palace.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I know, yea counterintuitive.
- 9:23Speaker 2: That's like in the middle of the corn belt of
- 9:26Speaker 2: South Dakota, though, you start getting west of there and
- 9:28Speaker 2: you lose all that darn corn you do. It's east
- 9:30Speaker 2: River west river. But still question two, the topic is fishing.
- 9:36Speaker 2: This next great question is via Jacob Arnolds. Merriam Webster
- 9:44Speaker 2: defines this seven letter word as quote, a water passage
- 9:48Speaker 2: where the tide meets a river current. Randall and Brody
- 9:55Speaker 2: already have their answers. Merriam Webster defines this seven letter
- 10:00Speaker 2: word as a water passage where the tide meets a
- 10:03Speaker 2: river current. This is question too.
- 10:08Speaker 7: If there's another seven lew word, I'm not.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Gonna think about it. Brody hougand up choosing South Dakota
- 10:14Speaker 2: for not being part of the corn.
- 10:16Speaker 7: Honestly, man, it's all based on driving across the country.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Okay, Like that's like I don't remember of corn and.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Sound like the corn.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Merriam Webster defines this seven letter word as a water
- 10:31Speaker 2: passage where the tide meets a river current.
- 10:35Speaker 6: Yeah, I remember grow I remember seeing a lot of
- 10:37Speaker 6: corn growing up in Ohio, obviously, like I can visualize that,
- 10:42Speaker 6: But I just never thought of being included in the
- 10:45Speaker 6: corn belt. Perhaps I underappreciated our contribution to the the nation.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I'd say Ohio has some of the best corn because
- 10:52Speaker 2: they also have a lot of timber. And it's like,
- 10:55Speaker 2: I think I've said this before about Ohio, but they've
- 10:57Speaker 2: got this the right amount of rolling hills to take
- 10:59Speaker 2: a pretty nice topography for hunting white tail deer. Merriam
- 11:05Speaker 2: Webster defines this seven letter word as a water passage
- 11:08Speaker 2: where the tide meets a river current. Anyone besides Brody
- 11:12Speaker 2: and Randall confident?
- 11:14Speaker 1: No, I didn't say I was confident.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Okay, but you have an answer that's seven letters. He's
- 11:19Speaker 2: just playing, you know, our other players a similar question
- 11:26Speaker 2: to this. Well, I do a lot of things where
- 11:29Speaker 2: I say.
- 11:33Speaker 3: It was two rivers.
- 11:34Speaker 5: It was where two rivers meet, and it was a
- 11:36Speaker 5: creek letter that was delta.
- 11:42Speaker 2: That was from Age of Broni episode recently, that's salt water.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Brody got a good chuckle from why was he.
- 11:51Speaker 9: Done with my?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Did everyone else?
- 11:56Speaker 4: The different ways to go about this, there's like thinking
- 11:59Speaker 4: of the right word or starting with seven letters and
- 12:01Speaker 4: being like.
- 12:02Speaker 9: Oh yeah, Fling like okay, well, I'm just making sure
- 12:06Speaker 9: my answer has seven letters.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Maxwell, do you give up?
- 12:10Speaker 7: Ah?
- 12:10Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Tress
- 12:15Speaker 2: saying whirlpooled. Corey says estuary, Randall says estuary. Logan says causeway.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Max without an answer, Brody says estuary. The correct answer
- 12:25Speaker 2: is estuary. Estuaries are some of the most productive environments
- 12:31Speaker 2: on Earth based on how much organic matter they produce.
- 12:34Speaker 2: They also are enormous economic drivers through recreation and shipping.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Some notable estuaries are Chesapeake Bay, San Francisco Bay, and
- 12:44Speaker 2: the Hudson Bay. Question three the topic is natural history.
- 12:50Speaker 2: This dog breed, which is named after a monk, was
- 12:53Speaker 2: bred to rescue avalanche victims in the Swiss Alps. This
- 13:00Speaker 2: dog breed, which is named after a monk, was bred
- 13:03Speaker 2: to rescue avalanche victims in the Swiss Alps. Rody and
- 13:08Speaker 2: Randall already have their whiteboards down with an answer that
- 13:12Speaker 2: they seem to like. Corey has now joined them. Corey,
- 13:15Speaker 2: do you have this one right? Corey came up with
- 13:19Speaker 2: the estuary on our last question. He didn't seem to
- 13:21Speaker 2: like his answer very much. That was the same answer
- 13:23Speaker 2: I had in that.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Greek Try try again, No, I was.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Very nervous though. Shoot twice.
- 13:35Speaker 7: Strong answer, Max, wrong answer.
- 13:37Speaker 2: Strong, strong answer. Brody likes Max's answer.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Question three, wrote.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Again. The topic is natural history. This dog breed, which
- 13:47Speaker 2: is named after a monk, was bred to rescue avalanche
- 13:50Speaker 2: victims in the Swiss Alps. Mm hmm, Logan, do you
- 13:56Speaker 2: have an answer I'm trying to think of about Tressa?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Do you have an answer same? Go ahead and reveal
- 14:03Speaker 2: your answers. We have Tressa's saying husky. Oh. Corey says
- 14:08Speaker 2: Bernie's mountain dog. Randall says Saint Bernard. Logan says buddha Hey.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Max and Brody say Saint Bernard. They got it. The
- 14:18Speaker 2: correct answer is the Saint Bernard. It's believed that Saint
- 14:22Speaker 2: Bernard's are the descendants of Roman war dogs. The breed
- 14:26Speaker 2: was shaped by monks in the Swiss Alps to go
- 14:29Speaker 2: on search and rescue missions and guard property. It was
- 14:32Speaker 2: common for the dogs to work in teams of two.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Once they found a victim, one dog would stay with
- 14:37Speaker 2: the person to provide them with warmth, and the other
- 14:39Speaker 2: dog would go get help. One Saint Bernard Barry saved
- 14:42Speaker 2: forty human lives between the years eighteen hundred and eighteen twelve.
- 14:47Speaker 7: You're not gonna go. I thought you'd have a little
- 14:48Speaker 7: flavored text on the loll the barrel. That wasn't true.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I saw something that said that wasn't the case. They
- 14:56Speaker 2: weren't carrying around little barrels of whisks so fun. I'm
- 14:59Speaker 2: sure some Saint Bernard have at some point. But that
- 15:01Speaker 2: wasn't Uh, that wasn't like their thing.
- 15:03Speaker 3: You the big Dogs brand of shirts.
- 15:06Speaker 7: Yeah, that was.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Artifacts.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Those those are everywhere.
- 15:11Speaker 1: It's a Big Dogs world.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Big Dog fired some of those randoms.
- 15:16Speaker 6: No, but there was a big Dog outlet. Uh, oh, yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 6: there's a big Dog outlet there. There was one in Spokane, there.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Was one in Morgan that I would.
- 15:26Speaker 6: Yeah, I had I had a buddy who just had
- 15:30Speaker 6: all these big dog shirts.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, those were those were cool and then incredibly uncool.
- 15:35Speaker 2: And I bet like gen Z and what's below is
- 15:37Speaker 2: a jen Elpha, I bet they would love big dogs
- 15:40Speaker 2: stuff right now that that'd.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Be didn't know I was going to think about big dog.
- 15:44Speaker 2: I didn't question for the topic is conservation. It's next
- 15:49Speaker 2: great question is via Kale Carlin. What Lake is Isle
- 15:54Speaker 2: Royal National Park located in? What Lake is Isle Royal
- 16:02Speaker 2: National Park located in randal Berry quick to answer, been there,
- 16:10Speaker 2: you have spent some time on this lake. Okay, there's
- 16:13Speaker 2: a hint getting there. No, Randall's travels. What Lake is
- 16:20Speaker 2: Ile Royal National Park located in We've got Corey searching
- 16:25Speaker 2: the room looking for a piece of art or map.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Help him. Are you finding anything?
- 16:33Speaker 7: Nebraska map always throws me off.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Oh, you could have seen that they're part of the
- 16:37Speaker 2: corn belt if you looked at that closely. I imagine
- 16:41Speaker 2: they got a big there's a John Deere logo on there.
- 16:43Speaker 2: You have to and then you'd know that, hey, that
- 16:46Speaker 2: that's say, it's part of the corn Belt. What Lake
- 16:50Speaker 2: is Isle Royal National Park located in Brody? How do
- 16:54Speaker 2: you feel about your aw.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Man I think I'm in danger of a slip up here.
- 16:58Speaker 1: That's exciting.
- 17:00Speaker 9: Is everybody ready you know what I was thinking about
- 17:04Speaker 9: my family my family feud episode. Does that count as
- 17:08Speaker 9: a trivia one?
- 17:09Speaker 2: Sure? Max, Sweet, I got to do that. Actually, well,
- 17:12Speaker 2: you each have to divide it by how many people
- 17:14Speaker 2: were on your team or so you have one one
- 17:16Speaker 2: in a quarter wins the most. Maybe someone for your
- 17:20Speaker 2: team would donate their other like quarter to you. Maybe
- 17:25Speaker 2: does everyone have an answer question Max, you were thinking
- 17:31Speaker 2: about and your answers we have and Corey saying Michigan.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Randall says Superior. Logan says Michigan. Max says Eerie Brody
- 17:44Speaker 2: crossed out here on and wrote down Superior. The correct
- 17:47Speaker 2: answer is like Superior. Located about twenty miles off the
- 17:53Speaker 2: shore of Minnesota, Ile Royale is one of the least
- 17:56Speaker 2: visited national parks in America. The only way to get
- 17:59Speaker 2: there is via play boat or ferry. I already have
- 18:02Speaker 2: a ferry reservation for this June, when I'll plan to
- 18:05Speaker 2: visit the park for the first time.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Lovely, when did you guys would have got that one
- 18:11Speaker 1: when I was in high school?
- 18:12Speaker 2: Did you take the ferry there?
- 18:14Speaker 6: We came from the Minnesota side on a boat. It
- 18:19Speaker 6: was a very rough It was one of the roughest
- 18:21Speaker 6: boat rides I've been on.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Oh, just like a civilian boats where you guys took
- 18:26Speaker 2: a ferry.
- 18:27Speaker 6: No, it's well, I wouldn't call it a ferry.
- 18:29Speaker 7: A tour boat.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Yeah, it was kind of a tour boat.
- 18:31Speaker 6: It was probably it had like an interior cabin with
- 18:34Speaker 6: seating for forty people maybe yep. And then we backpacked
- 18:39Speaker 6: from the east side of the island to the west
- 18:41Speaker 6: side of the island.
- 18:42Speaker 2: What what's your review of it?
- 18:43Speaker 6: Oh, super cool, solid of moose. I wish I had fished.
- 18:47Speaker 6: I didn't bring I didn't bring fishing equipment. The problem
- 18:52Speaker 6: with that trip was that I had a one man
- 18:55Speaker 6: tent and my brother had a one man tent. My
- 18:57Speaker 6: parents had a two man tent, and my brother forgot
- 18:59Speaker 6: his tent poles, so.
- 19:01Speaker 3: He's bunking with you.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So we had a three three men tent sure combined
- 19:07Speaker 1: for four people. So huh. Yeah, one of those one
- 19:10Speaker 1: of those fun trips.
- 19:11Speaker 2: The bad reviews I've read about Ile Royale is just
- 19:13Speaker 2: a hllacious amount of mosquitoes. Yes, so I'm preparing myself
- 19:18Speaker 2: for that, do you.
- 19:18Speaker 9: Go from de Luther, Grand Ray or neither?
- 19:22Speaker 1: Well, I think we went from grand Ray. Okay, yeah.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Question five, the topic is cooking. This is our listener
- 19:29Speaker 2: question of the Week, which was won by Jennifer Silberberg
- 19:32Speaker 2: for sending this great question. Jennifer is going to get
- 19:34Speaker 2: a board game signed by the crew. If you want
- 19:36Speaker 2: a chance to win our listener Question of the Week,
- 19:38Speaker 2: then send your question to Trivia at the medeater dot com.
- 19:42Speaker 2: What state produces ninety nine percent of America's stone crab harvest?
- 19:51Speaker 2: What state produces ninety nine percent of America's stone crab harvest?
- 19:56Speaker 2: Brody very quick to answer. The rest of our players
- 20:00Speaker 2: have not yet put marker to whiteboard. Brody, you know
- 20:04Speaker 2: this with certainty? You know, I think it's I'm okay,
- 20:14Speaker 2: ninety nine percent sure that he knows where ninety nine
- 20:16Speaker 2: percent of America's stone crab harvest comes from.
- 20:20Speaker 9: I think there's two different names for this crab Okay,
- 20:24Speaker 9: stone cred of stone crab, something else.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I think Brody's just staring la.
- 20:32Speaker 7: I mean, maybe I'm learning something. I don't know.
- 20:37Speaker 3: It could be wrong.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Question five, it's cooking. After this we'll get a scoreboard
- 20:42Speaker 2: update from phil one state produces ninety nine percent of
- 20:47Speaker 2: America's stone crab harvest. We could call it fishing if
- 20:50Speaker 2: you like, if that makes you feel better.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Crab crabbing.
- 20:54Speaker 2: The topic is crabbing.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I know that's a blue crab.
- 20:57Speaker 9: Yeah, you can answer that one.
- 21:02Speaker 1: I just don't know my crabs.
- 21:05Speaker 2: How do you feel about your answer? Randall?
- 21:06Speaker 1: I don't feel great.
- 21:08Speaker 2: If you got to name five states, do you think
- 21:10Speaker 2: you'd be guaranteed to get it?
- 21:11Speaker 1: Then? Yeah? Okay, I mean how many states touch the ocean.
- 21:16Speaker 2: It's everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 21:21Speaker 2: have Tresa sang Washington. Corey says Alaska. He crossed out Maine.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Randall says Alaska, Logan says New Jersey, Max says Alaska.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Brody says Florida. The correct answer is Florida, FLA. Only
- 21:39Speaker 2: Brody got that one right. According to the Florida Fish
- 21:44Speaker 2: and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the stone crab market is one
- 21:48Speaker 2: of the state's five biggest fisheries Everglade City is the
- 21:51Speaker 2: hub claiming to be the stone crab capital of the world.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Stone crab flavor has been described as being similar to
- 21:57Speaker 2: lobster with a slightly sweeter taste.
- 22:00Speaker 7: Those are the ones where they're only allowed to pop
- 22:02Speaker 7: the claws.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think they like it's like one catch
- 22:04Speaker 2: and release with those things. Have you caught stone.
- 22:08Speaker 7: Crabs before eating them down there? I haven't caught it.
- 22:10Speaker 2: What's your review of stone.
- 22:11Speaker 7: They're very good. It's real good. It's not as good.
- 22:14Speaker 7: I don't think it's as good as.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Dungeon is, but it's good. Phil, were halfway through the
- 22:18Speaker 2: game of trivia. Give us the scoreboards.
- 22:24Speaker 3: It's looking rough out there, guys, what just happened? I'm sorry, Sorry,
- 22:28Speaker 3: I just.
- 22:28Speaker 1: Knocked a whiteboard off the thing here.
- 22:30Speaker 10: Oh that's fine, John lost, Tressa and Logan are not
- 22:35Speaker 10: on the board yet with zero points, Corey and Max
- 22:38Speaker 10: have one point a piece, Randall has three, and Brody
- 22:42Speaker 10: is up by two at halftime with a perfect game.
- 22:46Speaker 3: It's hard.
- 22:46Speaker 5: It's hard to see a reality where anyone catches up.
- 22:48Speaker 5: The stranger things have happened.
- 22:50Speaker 7: Randall came back and beat me last week or a
- 22:54Speaker 7: few days ago.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Did you question one of us?
- 22:57Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 22:58Speaker 6: I think Phil was insinuated that I can't catch up.
- 23:02Speaker 3: I definitely was.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I was gonna.
- 23:06Speaker 6: Feeling on that last one that it was coming from
- 23:09Speaker 6: the Atlantic, and I was thinking Florida. But I just
- 23:11Speaker 6: didn't have enough courage of conviction to go to Florida.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Looking unlikely that we'll have overtime again this week.
- 23:18Speaker 1: If he if.
- 23:19Speaker 6: He put two points on me in the first five,
- 23:21Speaker 6: why can't I put two on him in the second.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Question?
- 23:29Speaker 2: Six? The topic is mountain men. This this state's capital
- 23:41Speaker 2: is named after mountain man Kit Carson. So you tell
- 23:46Speaker 2: me the state, not the capital. This state's capital is
- 23:50Speaker 2: named after mountain man Kit Carson. Corey, you have this
- 23:55Speaker 2: one right, yeah, Randolin also looks confident. Brody had a
- 23:59Speaker 2: quick answered, but now doing osmosis where he's got it
- 24:05Speaker 2: pressed against his temple. This state's capital is named after
- 24:11Speaker 2: mountain man Kit Carson. Make it interesting, Okay, I'll get
- 24:15Speaker 2: it wrong, all right? Hmmm, did you talk about Kit
- 24:23Speaker 2: Carson in the recent audio book a little bit? What
- 24:27Speaker 2: do we have to say about Kit Carson without giving
- 24:29Speaker 2: it away? Uh?
- 24:31Speaker 6: He ran away from an apprenticeship as a saddle maker.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Oh did that get him in trouble?
- 24:37Speaker 6: I don't know that anything came of it, but it's no, no, no, no.
- 24:43Speaker 2: This state's capital is named after mountain men Kit Carson.
- 24:50Speaker 6: We also have an anecdote of a field amputation conducted
- 24:55Speaker 6: in a little party that Kit Carson is traveling with.
- 24:58Speaker 2: Oh yep, it's everybody ready.
- 25:02Speaker 6: It's one of multiple field amputations covered in media to America.
- 25:06Speaker 2: Either the I don't remember if it was Kit Carson,
- 25:10Speaker 2: but I previously had a trivia question about a mountain
- 25:12Speaker 2: man's last quote, and it may have been Kit Carson.
- 25:15Speaker 2: On his deathbed, he said something like I wish I
- 25:17Speaker 2: just had time for one last bowl of chili.
- 25:19Speaker 7: That's I think that's supposed to be Kit Carson. I
- 25:22Speaker 7: don't know if it's true. I remember Steve talking about that.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Is everybody ready, go ahead and reveal your answers. I
- 25:29Speaker 2: have Tresa and Cory and Randall saying Nevada. Logan says Nebraska,
- 25:36Speaker 2: Max says Idaho, Brody says Nevada. The correct answer is Nevada, Reno, Nebraska.
- 25:44Speaker 7: Same thing.
- 25:48Speaker 1: That's why I wouldn't have got it.
- 25:49Speaker 2: I was gonna write down.
- 25:50Speaker 3: I know it was like boys, there's no there's no way.
- 25:53Speaker 2: John Fremont named the Carson River after Kit Carson, who
- 25:57Speaker 2: was a scout for Fremont's expedition through the area. The
- 26:00Speaker 2: city's population boomed when gold was discovered nearby in the
- 26:04Speaker 2: eighteen fifties, but slowed down after the mines dried up.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Carson City has fifty eight thousand people, making it the
- 26:11Speaker 2: third smallest state capital after Pierce, South Dakota and Juno, Alaska.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Qusha, how much time does Shelby have to answer these questions?
- 26:21Speaker 2: If she doesn't know it? She moves on pretty quickly,
- 26:25Speaker 2: so we wrap up a trivia test run in probably
- 26:28Speaker 2: five minutes. It goes quick. Question seven, the topic is conservation.
- 26:35Speaker 2: North America's most common rat is named after what Nordic country?
- 26:41Speaker 1: What?
- 26:42Speaker 7: Max? You should know this?
- 26:44Speaker 10: Why?
- 26:44Speaker 2: Why shouldn't know this?
- 26:45Speaker 7: I'll tell you later.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Okay, I'm on the edge of my seat.
- 26:49Speaker 2: North America's the most common rat is named after what
- 26:53Speaker 2: Nordic country? Is? Maxwell? Nordic?
- 26:58Speaker 1: Is that? Does he have pet rats?
- 27:00Speaker 2: I'll tell you later. Okay, just call me a rat Randall.
- 27:04Speaker 2: You know this one, Brody, you know this one?
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yes?
- 27:09Speaker 2: North America's most common rat is named after what Nordic country?
- 27:18Speaker 2: We've got Max writing down as many Nordic countries as
- 27:21Speaker 2: he can come up with. Not a bad strategy. Now
- 27:25Speaker 2: our other players are doing the same.
- 27:28Speaker 7: And Max cover your board up.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Hey, don't you want to beat Logan?
- 27:34Speaker 3: It should be pretty easy at this point.
- 27:37Speaker 2: North America's most common rat is named after what Nordic country?
- 27:43Speaker 2: This question seven and the topic is conservation. Max declared
- 27:50Speaker 2: he has three Nordic countries written down.
- 27:52Speaker 9: I'm trying to think why I should know this.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I think I think Brodie is just trying to mess
- 27:57Speaker 2: with the He's gonna say that every time.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Where are your ancestors from?
- 28:04Speaker 1: No word.
- 28:07Speaker 2: Has rats? Corey? Are you writing down Nordic countries?
- 28:10Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 28:10Speaker 3: I got four?
- 28:11Speaker 2: Okay, Tressa is at your strategy as well. I don't
- 28:14Speaker 2: even know if this okay, Okay, we've got Corey has
- 28:18Speaker 2: outright just shown his whiteboards.
- 28:20Speaker 1: Max even have a globe.
- 28:25Speaker 4: We need a globe and we should have nobody answer.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Max? Is he raised all three Nordic countries? You can
- 28:34Speaker 2: think that one.
- 28:38Speaker 1: Logan?
- 28:38Speaker 2: Are you ready? Corey?
- 28:41Speaker 1: Are you ready?
- 28:41Speaker 2: What do you need to know? We're writing down country?
- 28:44Speaker 2: One country? North America's most common rat named after what
- 28:49Speaker 2: Nordic country? Tressa? Are you ready? Go ahead and reveal
- 28:53Speaker 2: your answers? With Tressa saying Poland. Cory, he wrote down Finland, Ireland, Sweden,
- 28:59Speaker 2: and then he picked Norway ran in Iceland.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I think I thought I wanted him to get credit. Yeah, yeah,
- 29:06Speaker 1: the listeners.
- 29:08Speaker 2: L says Norway, Logan says Norway, Max says Norway. Brody
- 29:12Speaker 2: says Norway. They got it. The correct answer is Norway.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Now why should Max hear that?
- 29:18Speaker 4: Because he's from a part of the country where there's
- 29:21Speaker 4: a lot of Norwegian immigrants.
- 29:24Speaker 6: That's what That's where I thought you were going with him.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Max is basically made of bludafesque yea. Norway rats are
- 29:32Speaker 2: also known as brown rats, sewer rats, and street rats.
- 29:36Speaker 2: They arrived to North America via ships in seventeen seventy
- 29:40Speaker 2: five and are now found in all fifty states. A
- 29:43Speaker 2: two year study of New York City's rats determined that
- 29:46Speaker 2: the uptown population is genetically different than the downtown population,
- 29:51Speaker 2: with Midtown acting as a barrier that largely keeps them
- 29:54Speaker 2: from mixing.
- 29:55Speaker 7: How did they not get here until seven seventeen seventy five?
- 30:00Speaker 2: Know, they just kept clean ships before that?
- 30:01Speaker 7: I suppose, Come on, no way.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Question eight, The topic is fishing. Oh, speaking of the devil.
- 30:08Speaker 2: This next great question is via Leland Heart. Okay, hey,
- 30:11Speaker 2: what was the name of the wheeler playmate thirty eight
- 30:15Speaker 2: boat from Gilligan's Island?
- 30:17Speaker 3: Wow?
- 30:19Speaker 1: Really taking us back here?
- 30:22Speaker 2: What was the name of the wheeler playmate thirty eight
- 30:26Speaker 2: boat from Gilligan's Island?
- 30:27Speaker 3: That was Brody's proudest whiteboard slam so far?
- 30:32Speaker 2: Randall also seems to know it, though. How confident are you? Random?
- 30:35Speaker 9: Very?
- 30:36Speaker 7: Can you play the song after we're done?
- 30:39Speaker 3: For copyright reasons? No, but I did.
- 30:41Speaker 5: I did pull a clip from this theme song for
- 30:43Speaker 5: a last week's episode of Cal's weekn Review.
- 30:45Speaker 3: Check it out.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Oh right up and you'll hear a tail keep going.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Coyright?
- 30:53Speaker 2: How much of Gilligan's Island have you seen?
- 30:55Speaker 1: Brody?
- 30:56Speaker 4: I mean when I'm a little kid, it was like,
- 30:59Speaker 4: you know, you don't remember back when there was only
- 31:02Speaker 4: three channels.
- 31:03Speaker 7: Right, I do not remember? That was the show that
- 31:06Speaker 7: was on after school.
- 31:07Speaker 2: But I remember Nick at Night. I watched a lot
- 31:08Speaker 2: of Dick Van Dyke.
- 31:09Speaker 7: Yeah, this was pre Nicket Night.
- 31:12Speaker 2: I also loved the.
- 31:14Speaker 3: Monkeys. Yeah.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I've recently gotten served some content on Instagram showing just
- 31:19Speaker 2: how stoned the monkeys were when they were filming that.
- 31:23Speaker 2: It's like so obvious now when you watch a clip
- 31:26Speaker 2: and you see one of the monkeys is clearly very
- 31:30Speaker 2: high while they were filming that show. You know what
- 31:34Speaker 2: surprises me about Gilligan's Island When I was researching this question,
- 31:37Speaker 2: only had three seasons. That seems like a show to
- 31:40Speaker 2: me that had twenty seas.
- 31:42Speaker 6: When you asked Brody, how much of Gilligan's Island have
- 31:45Speaker 6: you seen? I thought, even if I could name every
- 31:48Speaker 6: episode I've watched, I'd have no idea how much of
- 31:50Speaker 6: Gilligan's Island I've seen because it just exists.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Just washed over.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Yeah, what did you watch a lot of Gilligan's Island?
- 31:57Speaker 2: Grandle yeh?
- 31:57Speaker 1: I used to watch a lot of Nicke at Night?
- 31:59Speaker 2: Uh huh? What did you like from Nick and Knight.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I'm not even gonna remember what was on.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I like Mary Tyler Moore because it was Minneapolis, she
- 32:06Speaker 2: was there.
- 32:07Speaker 3: I watched a lot of Dream of Genie.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah, m hm uh.
- 32:10Speaker 10: Brady, Lucy, we talked more about this boat did that
- 32:15Speaker 10: is what boat fail them and that is why they
- 32:18Speaker 10: stuck on the island.
- 32:19Speaker 7: Well, you knew the song, You know what happened.
- 32:23Speaker 1: It's the skipper had a boat.
- 32:27Speaker 2: And they were supposed to be on what a three
- 32:28Speaker 2: hour tour? Three and then what happens was a storm?
- 32:33Speaker 4: Right?
- 32:33Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, And for some reason this tropical island they
- 32:36Speaker 2: wash up on it has a lot of monkeys, right
- 32:38Speaker 2: or am I thinking of a different show?
- 32:39Speaker 4: I remembering Harassed by There was Lord Howell?
- 32:45Speaker 6: Right, who's the aristocratic Carriacter Ginger?
- 32:48Speaker 7: And uh? Or was that the professor?
- 32:51Speaker 1: The professor?
- 32:52Speaker 7: The professor and Mary?
- 32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, there's here on loved on the Spectrum.
- 32:58Speaker 6: I think one of the seasons on the Spectrum, one
- 33:01Speaker 6: of the guys loves Gilligan's Island and he goes to
- 33:06Speaker 6: a comic con convention to meet the actress who played
- 33:09Speaker 6: Mary Ann from uh and it's I mean, I'm surprised
- 33:14Speaker 6: she's alive, but it looks great.
- 33:16Speaker 3: We need to bring back TV theme songs. Will they
- 33:18Speaker 3: just explain the entire perce?
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty convenient. You can tune in at any
- 33:23Speaker 2: time then I know what's going on. I'm almost certain
- 33:25Speaker 2: that like gorillas were weirdly on that island.
- 33:28Speaker 7: You probably right.
- 33:29Speaker 2: I mean again, the question is question eight. The topic
- 33:32Speaker 2: is fishing what was the name of the Wheeler Playmate
- 33:35Speaker 2: thirty eight boat from Gilligan's Islands. Everybody ready, go ahead
- 33:40Speaker 2: and reveal your answers. We have Tress's saying Aloha, Corey
- 33:45Speaker 2: says SS. Susie Randall says SS Minnow. Logan says little Skipper.
- 33:52Speaker 7: It was little Buddy Logan.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Oh, Maxine says little g Brody says SS Minnow. The
- 33:59Speaker 2: correct an her is the SS Minow. The original owner
- 34:03Speaker 2: of the thirty eight foot boat called it the Blue Jacket,
- 34:06Speaker 2: but the show renamed it after TV producer Newton Minnow.
- 34:10Speaker 2: The Wheeler Playmate is the same model that Ernest Hemingway owned,
- 34:14Speaker 2: which he equipped without riggers for fishing. On that very
- 34:17Speaker 2: boat he caught one of his biggest tuna and wrote
- 34:20Speaker 2: the old man in the sea.
- 34:21Speaker 9: What does SS mean?
- 34:23Speaker 5: And like?
- 34:24Speaker 2: Isn't like service ship or ship Captain Randall? And it
- 34:28Speaker 2: technically wasn't an SS. It should have been like an
- 34:31Speaker 2: m T MT motor motor. I don't remember this.
- 34:35Speaker 5: Is this is Google AI, so take it with a
- 34:37Speaker 5: grain of salt. But it says it's an acronym for
- 34:39Speaker 5: screw steamer.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Maybe technically it was not an SS like that's that's designated.
- 34:48Speaker 7: Yah something like that.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Yeah, it says a single screw steamship.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Okay, Phil, we have two questions left. Give us a
- 34:56Speaker 2: scoreboard update.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Let's everyone's on the board now.
- 35:03Speaker 5: Max has two, Corey has three, Random six and still
- 35:06Speaker 5: two points ahead as BIRDI Henderson with eight points and
- 35:09Speaker 5: a perfect game Hot Dog.
- 35:11Speaker 2: Question nine, the topic is cooking. McCormick describes this six
- 35:18Speaker 2: letter spice as quote, sweet peppery and a bit floral
- 35:22Speaker 2: with a hint of citrus. McCormick describes this six letter
- 35:29Speaker 2: spice as sweet peppery and a bit floral with a
- 35:33Speaker 2: hint of citrus. Phil, I liked the Brady Bunch movie
- 35:39Speaker 2: a lot more than I liked The Brady Bunch.
- 35:41Speaker 5: Oh yeah, well, I mean that was that was a
- 35:43Speaker 5: great idea because the Brady Bunch movie was just like
- 35:45Speaker 5: a it's pretty much a spoof of the Brady Bunch
- 35:47Speaker 5: because it's the Brady Bunch living in modern times, if
- 35:49Speaker 5: I'm correct. So it was like all of their TV
- 35:51Speaker 5: sitcom mannerisms in the real world.
- 35:54Speaker 2: And I think they went to Hawaiian and there was
- 35:55Speaker 2: like a.
- 35:56Speaker 5: Cursed that was a real episode of the Brady bunch
- 35:59Speaker 5: the Hawaii episode with the cursed cursed like tiki statue
- 36:03Speaker 5: or whatever.
- 36:03Speaker 2: The hell it was, got all my nicked night mixed
- 36:06Speaker 2: up again. We're on question nine. Brody, who has the
- 36:10Speaker 2: perfect game going, does not yet have any McCormick describes
- 36:16Speaker 2: this six letter spice as sweet peppery and a bit
- 36:20Speaker 2: floral with the hint of citrus.
- 36:22Speaker 7: Is this one that everyone has in their cupboard? Spencer?
- 36:25Speaker 2: I don't know, I do not know. Does anybody feel
- 36:30Speaker 2: good about their answer?
- 36:32Speaker 1: Corey?
- 36:33Speaker 4: No, No, not yet.
- 36:39Speaker 2: McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet peppery and
- 36:42Speaker 2: a bit floral with the hint of citrus. Hmmm, it's
- 36:48Speaker 2: maybe a zero percenter n rune Brody's perfect game. I
- 36:53Speaker 2: already tried that. This is question nine.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Hmmm, real stumper here.
- 37:08Speaker 2: But if Randall could get this right and Brody get
- 37:11Speaker 2: it wrong, we'd have a game going into the final question.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Brody now has an answer, Brody, do you like your answer?
- 37:18Speaker 7: It's got six letters?
- 37:20Speaker 2: Okay. McCormick describes this six letter spice as sweet peppery
- 37:25Speaker 2: and a bit floral with the hint of citrus. Randall,
- 37:34Speaker 2: do you have an answer?
- 37:35Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 37:36Speaker 2: I do.
- 37:36Speaker 6: I don't really know. You can get it in a spice. Yeah,
- 37:40Speaker 6: I'm not sure if I believe this. Keep going, long
- 37:47Speaker 6: story short, I'm not sure if this is a spice.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Okay, do our other players give up? But yeah, go
- 37:53Speaker 2: ahead and reveal your answers. We have Trestis saying misquite,
