Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Will the Twins make more moves before the trade deadline?
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: It's trade deadline day in Major League Baseball? What will
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Minnesota Twins do? Will they add anymore than the
- 0:07Speaker 1: pieces they had to last week? AJ Mintor to the
- 0:10Speaker 1: bullpen and Dean Kramer the starting picture. We will talk
- 0:13Speaker 1: about that. We'll talk about a rough series in Seattle
- 0:15Speaker 1: where the Twins lost the last two games on walkoffs,
- 0:18Speaker 1: and we'll also talk about Dean Kramer, who arrived on
- 0:21Speaker 1: in Friday night, a Friday night deal. But before we
- 0:25Speaker 1: get to all that, the matter at hand. Trade deadline day.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So far, it's kind of gone how we were thinking.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Guys.
- 0:33Speaker 1: It's been a soft buy I would say for the
- 0:35Speaker 1: Twins so far with I guess you got to count
- 0:38Speaker 1: Tommy Nance too in the picture there in the bullpen.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But last we heard on Friday night, Dan, after the
- 0:44Speaker 1: Dean Kramer deal, it still seemed like the Twins were
- 0:46Speaker 1: hoping to get more done. What's the latest there.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Yeah, Look, they were optimistic as of Friday. I mean
- 0:54Speaker 2: we found out why they were optimistic. They had a
- 0:57Speaker 2: deal they thought was done and we were reported on that. Yeah,
- 1:00Speaker 2: then the owner of the Astros came in and nixed it,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and so you know, the Twins definitely thought that they
- 1:08Speaker 2: were gonna keep doing more. I mean, look, I still
- 1:10Speaker 2: think that there's a chance that they will. I'm not
- 1:13Speaker 2: I'm not certain because I know they've encountered some really
- 1:16Speaker 2: high prices, higher than they were comfortable with on Saturday
- 1:20Speaker 2: and Sunday. But I mean, at the baseline, when we
- 1:24Speaker 2: look at what they've done, they've gone out and improved
- 1:26Speaker 2: the team. And I know fans aren't really excited about
- 1:29Speaker 2: the Dean Kramer and we'll get into that a little
- 1:30Speaker 2: bit later, but that was such a necessary move for
- 1:33Speaker 2: this team to get pitching depth, to get starting rotation depth,
- 1:37Speaker 2: to make sure that the Connor prelib issue doesn't boil
- 1:41Speaker 2: to ahead and they're just stuck without a starter and
- 1:43Speaker 2: doing bullpen games every five days. And Dean Kramer's it's
- 1:46Speaker 2: not sexy, but the guy has a career of just
- 1:51Speaker 2: being a steady fourth guy, fifth guy in a rotation.
- 1:55Speaker 2: So the Twins have that they have a guy that's
- 1:57Speaker 2: been healthy for his career and they didn't go over
- 2:00Speaker 2: bored in the prices. They get him for next year too,
- 2:02Speaker 2: which is always huge for them. And aj Minter I think,
- 2:06Speaker 2: is you know, just gonna make this bullpen that much
- 2:10Speaker 2: better as this is a lefty. They've been looking for
- 2:13Speaker 2: someone steady to replace Anthony Bonda and aj Minterter came
- 2:18Speaker 2: out in the first game and inherited two runners and
- 2:21Speaker 2: got out of it in one pitch. And then on
- 2:23Speaker 2: Sunday came in and you know, facing a righty facing
- 2:27Speaker 2: Julio Rodriguez with runners on board, struck him out. So baseline,
- 2:33Speaker 2: they've done a good job. Like you said, it's a
- 2:35Speaker 2: soft BUBE, but I mean I like how they did it,
- 2:39Speaker 2: like efficiently and effectively. I think this team is better
- 2:44Speaker 2: than it was, you know, right before the All Star break.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Especially Tommy NaNs is starting to look pretty solid, but
- 2:50Speaker 2: that sexy move is still avoiding them so far or
- 2:54Speaker 2: evading them so far. It would be kind of amazing
- 2:58Speaker 2: if they pulled something off like that. But you know,
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean, you're you. I'd say it's a solid b
- 3:05Speaker 2: B plus what they've done so far, because this team
- 3:08Speaker 2: is better. But if there's more, that would be probably
- 3:13Speaker 2: a good idea. Tyler.
- 3:15Speaker 1: As a player, you're you're looking at it. Bullpen help,
- 3:18Speaker 1: starting pitching help. This weekend in Seattle kind of showed
- 3:24Speaker 1: some of the positives of where this team is at
- 3:27Speaker 1: the heart to fight back from from down six to
- 3:29Speaker 1: nothing yesterday and make that a game. But you do
- 3:32Speaker 1: you feel like there's enough there to make a push
- 3:35Speaker 1: or are you still hoping for more as a player
- 3:37Speaker 1: in this situation.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I mean watching the games we were kind of talking
- 3:42Speaker 3: about the you know, the rough starts for all three
- 3:44Speaker 3: guys kind of finished those games this weekend before they
- 3:47Speaker 3: got going, and it's you know, with the move, have
- 3:50Speaker 3: made any difference there?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 3:52Speaker 3: You know, I mentor pitched in the two games that
- 3:56Speaker 3: he threw in and did his job, you know, which
- 3:57Speaker 3: is what you want to see, you when a guy
- 3:59Speaker 3: settle in quick, you know. And Kramer whenever his turn
- 4:02Speaker 3: through the rotation comes up, I'm not sure when he's
- 4:05Speaker 3: supposed to pitch yet, but you know it's I said
- 4:07Speaker 3: it the other day and it it.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Keeps ringing a bell.
- 4:10Speaker 3: That that stabilizing move to kind of settle things down
- 4:14Speaker 3: across the board.
- 4:15Speaker 2: It's what we need, you know.
- 4:16Speaker 4: And Dan kind of hit you know, the.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Guy that can just cover some innings, guy that you
- 4:20Speaker 3: can depend on and know you're going to get this
- 4:22Speaker 3: every time out. That stabilizes the rest of the guys
- 4:25Speaker 3: behind them. It helps the bullpen settle into a spot.
- 4:28Speaker 3: It helps these new guys get into their spot in
- 4:30Speaker 3: the order coming out of that pen. You know, guys
- 4:33Speaker 3: like Gomez and Morris at the back end have been great.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You know, it's it's.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Not necessarily a place where they need a huge move now.
- 4:41Speaker 3: I think, you know whatever, they're going to trade Trevor
- 4:45Speaker 3: and that's for me. That's a weirder spot to be
- 4:48Speaker 3: for him. You know, it adds a wrinkle to the
- 4:50Speaker 3: whole weekend. You know, he wakes up to messages like, yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 3: I was supposed to be gone and the owner didn't
- 4:56Speaker 3: want it to happen, And it's just a to me,
- 4:59Speaker 3: that's more d.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Interest in making a move. Honestly, it puts thoughts into
- 5:02Speaker 2: guys heads.
- 5:03Speaker 3: You know, that's a weird one for me, and I
- 5:05Speaker 3: hate every year it happens, you know, and guys are
- 5:08Speaker 3: doing their jobs reporting, but before players even know or
- 5:11Speaker 3: have any idea it's happening, it's the whole world knows,
- 5:14Speaker 3: and it's just a it's a hectic. Like I said,
- 5:17Speaker 3: it can be a hectic week. It can be a
- 5:19Speaker 3: fun week. As someone who's never had to worry about it,
- 5:22Speaker 3: it was always fun to watch. But you know, the
- 5:25Speaker 3: there's the other side of it. You know, Trevor Larnick
- 5:28Speaker 3: wakes up to family and everybody like, Hey, what's going on?
- 5:31Speaker 3: And he's like, what are you talking about?
- 5:32Speaker 2: You know, it's weird.
- 5:33Speaker 3: It's about to be you know, and you got guys
- 5:35Speaker 3: like Misrowski being interviewed about the Dodgers trades and things.
- 5:39Speaker 3: It's just like, what do I care what they're doing?
- 5:40Speaker 3: You know, I got to do my job while worrying
- 5:43Speaker 3: about all.
- 5:43Speaker 2: This other stuff.
- 5:44Speaker 3: It's just a it's great for the fans, it's great
- 5:46Speaker 3: for me, but as a player, sometimes these situations are
- 5:49Speaker 3: pretty uncomfortable.
- 5:52Speaker 1: It's got to be tough Dan hearing that your team
- 5:55Speaker 1: wanted you to be traded and then it fell apart
- 5:58Speaker 1: and now you have to come back to the same
- 6:00Speaker 1: clubouts Hey, guys.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Still here, Trevor Larnick responded, well to home runs. Yeah,
- 6:08Speaker 2: that got on base four out of nine. It was
- 6:12Speaker 2: certainly something that was interesting. Look, the reporter of the
- 6:14Speaker 2: reported I think his name is like Michael Marino. Nobody
- 6:17Speaker 2: knows who this is. Uh, It's like like he's not
- 6:22Speaker 2: affiliated with any outlet. So it seemed like there was
- 6:26Speaker 2: a chance that you know, was just I don't know
- 6:29Speaker 2: that it wasn't accurate. But you know, it's turned out
- 6:33Speaker 2: that a Twins person said, yeah, a deal got canceled
- 6:38Speaker 2: very late. They didn't say that the owner got involved,
- 6:41Speaker 2: but they said the trade that they thought they had
- 6:43Speaker 2: done was canceled very late. And and so Trevor Larnick
- 6:50Speaker 2: dealt with and I know, sorry, I know, Bobby Nightingale
- 6:53Speaker 2: to start tributing, reported that everything he's heard it's one accurate. So,
- 7:01Speaker 2: I mean, it was a weird situation. Derek Shelton clearly
- 7:04Speaker 2: was upset about it. He mentioned it a couple of times.
- 7:06Speaker 2: People shouldn't talk. He said that on Sunday people just
- 7:10Speaker 2: shouldn't talk. People should be you know, keep it quiet.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Clearly this got out. He had to deal with it
- 7:16Speaker 2: with Trevor Larnick and they had a candid, honest conversation.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He said. The part that he I think it helped
- 7:23Speaker 2: him handle it with Trevor was like he and Trevor
- 7:27Speaker 2: have spent all year talking. They have an open line
- 7:30Speaker 2: of communication. Derek Shelton just was honest, and you know,
- 7:36Speaker 2: it is weird. It's because if you're Trevor Larnock. That's
- 7:39Speaker 2: Saturday morning. You have forty eight hours until the deadline,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and you know that they tried to trade you on Friday.
- 7:46Speaker 2: You have to think you're still getting called. And that's
- 7:50Speaker 2: a weird feeling. But he's really good at compartmentalizing and
- 7:53Speaker 2: just focusing on the work, and he's talked about that.
- 7:56Speaker 2: I've talked to him about this off and on for
- 7:57Speaker 2: three weeks because it just seemed like he was those
- 8:00Speaker 2: guys that was gonna get traded, and he said, you
- 8:03Speaker 2: can't really do anything about it. He's like, at the
- 8:05Speaker 2: end of the day, no matter what, I'm gonna be
- 8:07Speaker 2: out of ballpark, no matter where it is. And so
- 8:09Speaker 2: I just want to keep doing good work and know
- 8:12Speaker 2: and focus on that and making sure that I'm the
- 8:14Speaker 2: best player I can be. He's excelled in that in
- 8:17Speaker 2: that realm throughout all of this, and especially with the
- 8:21Speaker 2: increased awkwardness, uh since Saturdays. So hitting two home runs,
- 8:26Speaker 2: including the one that really jump started them Sunday, lets
- 8:29Speaker 2: me know that he if he's if he's rattled, he's
- 8:31Speaker 2: really good at, you know, handling it. But he's inspired.
- 8:35Speaker 2: It's yeah, and we gotta we got to talk about
- 8:38Speaker 2: what they're going to do here in a little bit today,
- 8:41Speaker 2: what the plan is for them, because I think it's
- 8:43Speaker 2: a genius, Like they definitely are to doing all they
- 8:48Speaker 2: can do to combat it because I think a lot
- 8:50Speaker 2: of guys, as Derek Shelton said, have some scar tissue
- 8:53Speaker 2: from last year, you know, like when you had three
- 8:56Speaker 2: or four guys that are with this team that we're
- 8:58Speaker 2: in the room with those guys over and Ryan Jeffers
- 9:01Speaker 2: I believe were both maybe maybe Jeffers wasn't. It was
- 9:05Speaker 2: Bailey Ober was definitely in the hotel room in Cleveland
- 9:08Speaker 2: when Louis Varland started bawling when like after he got traded,
- 9:11Speaker 2: when Griffin Jackson was shocked, Griffin jacks thought that he
- 9:15Speaker 2: wasn't going anywhere Joe Ryan thought he was and then
- 9:17Speaker 2: it flipped. Both of them were in the room, like
- 9:20Speaker 2: you know, that was a traumatic day for them last year.
- 9:24Speaker 2: So it's just a weird time for players, and it's
- 9:29Speaker 2: even more for players families because hey, we're moving like player,
- 9:34Speaker 2: you know, player, you're you're used to that. I think
- 9:36Speaker 2: you get used to promotions and emotions and get but
- 9:40Speaker 2: you know, somebody's wife, their children, like leaving like just
- 9:44Speaker 2: act instantly. It definitely there's there's a yeah, there's a
- 9:49Speaker 2: lot of moving parts. Good way to say it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: You can read all about how the twins are spending
- 9:54Speaker 1: this stressful day on the athletic there it is. They
- 9:57Speaker 1: are going to the movies. They rented out of private
- 10:00Speaker 1: theater in Kansas City to watch The Odyssey.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, uh yeah.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Do we have a sense of how many players have
- 10:09Speaker 1: already seen The Odyssey in or is this is this
- 10:11Speaker 1: the first time?
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm gonna guess. Given it to a three hour movie
- 10:16Speaker 2: and we're in the baseball season, not many have seen it.
- 10:20Speaker 2: They do not disturb.
- 10:26Speaker 4: Everybody.
- 10:27Speaker 1: That's a good point. No one else so good.
- 10:31Speaker 2: We couldn't get a hold of it.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Now.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Ryan Jeffers said, everybody's ringer will be turned up. So
- 10:39Speaker 2: they're they're sitting there expecting, you know, they know it's
- 10:42Speaker 2: gonna happen, but they want to be distracted as much
- 10:45Speaker 2: as they can be throughout this, which is understandable. That's
- 10:49Speaker 2: a long day and that's a good way to do it.
- 10:52Speaker 2: It's three hour movie. They're sitting down at one o'clock
- 10:54Speaker 2: somewhere in Kansas City in a private in the theater
- 10:57Speaker 2: that they rented out, and they will. You know, it's
- 11:01Speaker 2: a two hour and fifty two minute movie. So I
- 11:04Speaker 2: think with with you know, previews, that puts them somewhere
- 11:09Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour and the deadlines of five,
- 11:11Speaker 2: so they'll have a good way to stay distracted, you
- 11:14Speaker 2: know a little.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Like if anything gets reported between one and four o'clock,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you need to find out what that scene was like
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the theater, right if someone gets shipped in the movie, like.
- 11:25Speaker 3: The climax of the movie, and then it's just yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 3: yeah in the theater.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You know, I saw the movie and like, I really
- 11:33Speaker 2: enjoyed it, but the last seventy five minutes were great,
- 11:37Speaker 2: and you know that's we're getting especially at that time,
- 11:40Speaker 2: you're getting closer to the deadline. That's when the movies
- 11:42Speaker 2: are going to happen. I'd be so pissed, like I
- 11:44Speaker 2: want to find out what happened with Matt Damon going
- 11:47Speaker 2: back and killing guys, and oh man.
- 11:49Speaker 1: You can't really tell. You can't really tell. Jeremy's old
- 11:52Speaker 1: like chill for those hours because it's like this is it.
- 11:54Speaker 4: I got to do it.
- 11:55Speaker 2: By five, Jeremy, they're pulling the Trojan Horse.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Can this wait?
- 12:01Speaker 2: It's going in Detroit like it's happening right now. Man,
- 12:05Speaker 2: let's go. Let's go.
- 12:08Speaker 1: If you like, Why did I get muted again? That
- 12:11Speaker 1: always happens to me during this That was crazy, what happened.

- 13:33Speaker 1: It's I spent all this time preparing all these these slides,
- 13:40Speaker 1: all these screens, and then I can't get the mute
- 13:42Speaker 1: button turned off. Sorry about that, but we're back. We'll
- 13:46Speaker 1: talk a little bit more about trades and Dean Kramer
- 13:48Speaker 1: at the end of the show, but we'll address the
- 13:50Speaker 1: series that happened this weekend right now. Twins lost two
- 13:52Speaker 1: out of three in Seattle over the weekend. Both the
- 13:55Speaker 1: losses came on walkoffs Saturday and Sunday, after the Twins
- 13:59Speaker 1: had dug out it early and Tyler. You alluded to it,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but the Twins really shot themselves in the foot in
- 14:05Speaker 1: the first inning in every game, and it may have
- 14:07Speaker 1: been the difference between winning the series and losing it.
- 14:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a it was a weird you know, nobody
- 14:13Speaker 3: seemed settled in for whatever reason. I think each guy
- 14:15Speaker 3: had a thirty plus pitch first inning, which is never
- 14:18Speaker 3: what you want. You know, a lot of walks and
- 14:20Speaker 3: just spraying the ball deep count things like that, and
- 14:24Speaker 3: it's it's never a good way to start, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 3: especially being the guy on the mound. It's the last
- 14:30Speaker 3: thing you want to do. And it gets you know,
- 14:32Speaker 3: some of those games, it gets pretty uh hairy out
- 14:34Speaker 3: there and you're like, I got to figure out how
- 14:35Speaker 3: to get through the first inning today.
- 14:37Speaker 2: You know, that's never been a thought that crosses your mind.
- 14:39Speaker 3: And then you're in the middle of it and you're
- 14:41Speaker 3: in the heart of an order with bases loaded and
- 14:43Speaker 3: trying to get another out.
- 14:44Speaker 2: It gets dicey.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But fortunately they were able to kind of tamp out
- 14:49Speaker 3: some of those issues. But it you know, you end
- 14:52Speaker 3: up losing games closed by one run, you know, it's
- 14:55Speaker 3: it's you start looking for where it happened. And you
- 14:58Speaker 3: know a lot of it could go back to that
- 14:59Speaker 3: first inning. You Royce had that tough play for a
- 15:03Speaker 3: guy who hasn't played first up until a month ago.
- 15:06Speaker 2: You know, it's do you want him to make.
- 15:08Speaker 3: The right decision, of course, but you know he doesn't
- 15:11Speaker 3: have that muscle memory yet. You can't anticipate exactly what's
- 15:14Speaker 3: going to have. There's a lot of people moving around
- 15:16Speaker 3: at the same time. You know, it's in the moment.
- 15:19Speaker 3: It's so easy to be like throw the ball to home.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But at the same time he's like the competitors like
- 15:24Speaker 3: get the get the first out, you know, try to
- 15:27Speaker 3: make the play. It just you know, little stuff it
- 15:30Speaker 3: changes games. You know, the one extra run here there.
- 15:33Speaker 3: That's why when we're ahead and you know the team
- 15:36Speaker 3: can tackle on that one extra run, it just alleviates
- 15:38Speaker 3: that little bit of stress for the bullpen guys, for
- 15:41Speaker 3: the defense, everybody. It slows down that heart rate a
- 15:43Speaker 3: little bit. And that's you know, where the game of inches.
- 15:47Speaker 3: You know, the one extra run here, the one mistake
- 15:49Speaker 3: there can change everything.
- 15:51Speaker 2: And it showed itself there.
- 15:53Speaker 3: You know, the starters had a tough turn through the
- 15:55Speaker 3: first inning basically each time, and they had to dig
- 15:57Speaker 3: out all weekend and you know, the only game we
- 16:00Speaker 3: get the one to win the Royce.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Both the walk off losses ended on plays that were
- 16:07Speaker 1: or situations. I guess that that drew some some eyeballs
- 16:10Speaker 1: and attention. You mentioned the Royce. Lewis one bases loaded
- 16:13Speaker 1: one out, hot shot ground or right to him, he
- 16:16Speaker 1: steps on first base and then after a hesitation through
- 16:20Speaker 1: home and it was too late. And as a former
- 16:25Speaker 1: rec League All Star first baseman, it's like the last
- 16:30Speaker 1: thing you're thinking about is what you do if you
- 16:31Speaker 1: get the ball. You're thinking about, like, I got I
- 16:33Speaker 1: gotta cover that, I gotta do this, And I don't
- 16:36Speaker 1: have a problem with stepping on the bag first. I
- 16:38Speaker 1: used to do that too. Granted I was playing with
- 16:40Speaker 1: amateur that I didn't trust them to throw the ball
- 16:42Speaker 1: back to me. But uh, but like this is where
- 16:46Speaker 1: it went. Obviously, if you don't get that run in
- 16:56Speaker 1: the grass, yeah, if you don't get that runner before
- 16:58Speaker 1: the runner coming home scores at that point, you lose anyway.
- 17:01Speaker 1: So if he had, if he had no hesitation thrown
- 17:04Speaker 1: home in that situation, better chance of getting was it
- 17:08Speaker 1: Rodriguez or a rose Raine was and so yeah, it's
- 17:15Speaker 1: it's it's unfortunate too, But to your point, like, this
- 17:17Speaker 1: is kind of what you get, Dan, I think when
- 17:19Speaker 1: you're experimenting with defense all season long and putting guys
- 17:22Speaker 1: in spots that they're not fully experienced in.
- 17:25Speaker 2: That was his thirty ninth game. I believe in first base,
- 17:28Speaker 2: So if you're talking about four hundred and thirty ninth game,
- 17:32Speaker 2: he probably has seen that play before and done something
- 17:35Speaker 2: with it, you know, And we saw it even on Sunday.
- 17:38Speaker 2: I mean he went straight to second base similar ball,
- 17:41Speaker 2: so he had to come in on the ball to
- 17:44Speaker 2: go to second, but he looked immediately. But yeah, the minute, like,
- 17:48Speaker 2: let's credit Julio Rodriguez on that play because he's running
- 17:52Speaker 2: obviously for the double play, but he realizes what's happened
- 17:55Speaker 2: and he slowed down and that allows a rose Raina
- 17:59Speaker 2: to come home on the play. If Royce immediately goes
- 18:03Speaker 2: home right away like Grounder throws home, the bases are
- 18:08Speaker 2: loaded because a rose Raina got a late jump on
- 18:10Speaker 2: that play. So a rose Raina wasn't even coming until
- 18:14Speaker 2: he saw Julio stop and then he made the play happen.
- 18:17Speaker 2: It's just a wonky play and a much more experienced
- 18:21Speaker 2: first baseman handles it right, which you go to second
- 18:24Speaker 2: first even though the bag is right there, and you know, Royce,
- 18:27Speaker 2: it's so challenging because Col's ball, the spin or the
- 18:31Speaker 2: tail even took him into first base. Like it was
- 18:34Speaker 2: just perfectly set up for the for the Mariners, with
- 18:38Speaker 2: with with all the situations, with the fact that it
- 18:41Speaker 2: was a rookie first baseman, so to speak, and you know,
- 18:46Speaker 2: I mean, you're right, the hesitation, just the briefest of
- 18:50Speaker 2: hesitation looking to second base set up the whole thing.
- 18:56Speaker 2: And and his throw was I mean, that's the thing.
- 18:58Speaker 2: His throw was still pretty much on on the money.
- 19:01Speaker 2: Vic Tartini was in a weird position. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 2: I saw that too. It's yeah, it's so like the
- 19:11Speaker 2: the chances are like it's just a weird play and
- 19:14Speaker 2: that costs you on Saturday, and then Sunday happens again.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Another five man infield to five man infields for the
- 19:22Speaker 2: Twins over the weekend. It's not the first time the
- 19:25Speaker 2: year they've done it. They've done it at least once
- 19:28Speaker 2: or twice before that, so they're not afraid to do it.
- 19:30Speaker 2: And uh, in that situation, ball Cole Emerson singles through
- 19:35Speaker 2: the five man infield. I don't know what the chances
- 19:38Speaker 2: are of hitting a single through a five man infield,
- 19:42Speaker 2: but that's a pretty rare play too. And uh like
- 19:47Speaker 2: and and that ninth they had some controversy too fans.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Some fans were pretty livid they were playing no doubles.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Josh Jayleen Naylor made a hell of a deck on
- 19:59Speaker 2: Luke Luke Key Shoal who was coming in on the
- 20:02Speaker 2: ball and looked like he was slowing down a little
- 20:05Speaker 2: bit at second and then race for third got a
- 20:08Speaker 2: face full of dirt for it, which was yeah he uh.
- 20:15Speaker 2: But so all of a sudden and and uh roblists
- 20:19Speaker 2: took advantage of nobody on second, so instead of having
- 20:22Speaker 2: first and third, they had second and third. Some fans
- 20:25Speaker 2: wanted the twins to walk h Emerson Emerson Cole Emerson
- 20:32Speaker 2: and load the bases and bring up whoever the nine
- 20:37Speaker 2: titter is that's gonna have. I don't know, I can't
- 20:40Speaker 2: remember that it was the Bride the brain is fried
- 20:45Speaker 2: people with trade deadline and looking at my spring.
- 20:48Speaker 1: It was Reboss but like the the other note is break.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Behind him was Cole Young, who terrorized the Twins all weekend.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Right, and Derek Shelton sighted Cole Young. So that's what
- 20:58Speaker 2: that's the most important player in this. So they could
- 21:01Speaker 2: have gone after Revos with the bases loaded and won
- 21:07Speaker 2: out and tried to get the double play, and instead
- 21:11Speaker 2: they opted they said, look, we don't like the idea
- 21:14Speaker 2: that we're going to have to face cult Young. Essentially,
- 21:19Speaker 2: you know what I mean, Like they didn't want to
- 21:20Speaker 2: face cult Young with if they get this is really.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Great, They don't want to face the period. They just
- 21:27Speaker 1: don't want to face him, right.
- 21:29Speaker 2: So in no situation, if you double up Revus cool,
- 21:33Speaker 2: you get out of the inning right and no harm
- 21:35Speaker 2: or no foul. But if you don't him, if you
- 21:38Speaker 2: don't get him, then you do face cult Young, who's
- 21:41Speaker 2: seven for fourteen the series. He was four for five
- 21:44Speaker 2: on Sunday. Derek Derek Srulton was like, he's it felt
- 21:48Speaker 2: like he had fifteen hits in the series. Yeah, yes,
- 21:52Speaker 2: he was on them all day and just didn't want
- 21:55Speaker 2: to face that again. Also, the one thing he wouldn't say,
- 21:58Speaker 2: but you know is in the back of his mind,
- 22:00Speaker 2: is you wonder Gomez has walked fifteen batters in thirty
- 22:03Speaker 2: two and two thirds innings with the Twins. The guy
- 22:06Speaker 2: is not like mister he needs that empty base. Yeah right,
- 22:11Speaker 2: I'm just saying you throw a guy in a situation
- 22:14Speaker 2: that he really hasn't been in too often. That's the
- 22:16Speaker 2: kind of spot where that guy walks in a guy
- 22:19Speaker 2: like the crowd is amped that there's forty thousand out there,
- 22:24Speaker 2: like Onders Gomas has been very good for the Twins,
- 22:28Speaker 2: and yet like when you have that situation, I get
- 22:31Speaker 2: what they went for and and pault Emerson who was
- 22:36Speaker 2: hitting like what one ninety going into yesterday or not
- 22:40Speaker 2: very good anymore even through yea, So like I don't
- 22:46Speaker 2: I don't understand why, like you can like the there
- 22:50Speaker 2: was thought that went into this. There was a lot
- 22:52Speaker 2: of thought that went into the the process. I mean
- 22:55Speaker 2: they went to a five man infield, like they were
- 22:57Speaker 2: pulling out all the stops. That's the thing that was
- 23:00Speaker 2: really kind of strange, Like between Saturday and Sunday, Derek
- 23:05Speaker 2: Shelton managed his ass off, like tried to do everything.
- 23:09Speaker 2: The bullpen management on Saturday to keep them in that
- 23:11Speaker 2: game was crazy because you get like aj mintorin for
- 23:14Speaker 2: a batter and then Thunderberg gets a batter after he
- 23:16Speaker 2: got four outs the night before, and like, just don't
- 23:20Speaker 2: nance for the seventh, Like he just rolled out like
- 23:22Speaker 2: he had match up heaven and he finally had a
- 23:24Speaker 2: bullpen to be able to do some of the things
- 23:27Speaker 2: he wants to do. And it went well until the
- 23:30Speaker 2: ninth inning, and it went well until the ninth inning yesterday,
- 23:33Speaker 2: So kind of crazy on both both fronts.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I think the the not walk or not walk Emerson
- 23:40Speaker 1: is arguable, but I guess what I would say is
- 23:43Speaker 1: it like, either way, if things go well, you're gonna
- 23:49Speaker 1: end up facing cool Young in a situation where he
- 23:51Speaker 1: hit scores a run. But at least if that's the
- 23:54Speaker 1: tenth with the ghost runner of course, to start the
- 23:56Speaker 1: tenth inning, If that's if you get there, there's at
- 23:59Speaker 1: least that chance you've scored a run in the meantime.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Whereas in that case it's Cole Young one swing to
- 24:04Speaker 1: win the game guaranteed. So you could go either way.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But they did what they did, can't win them all.
- 24:11Speaker 1: I guess should we leave it at that? Yeah, shrug.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Hey, let's let's go over the fact that they were
- 24:19Speaker 2: down six nothing, although I will say I thought they
- 24:24Speaker 2: were they were pretty solid against Kirby, Like there were
- 24:29Speaker 2: about six or seven hard hit balls that found gloves.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Royce Lewis hit one to the warning trag and center
- 24:35Speaker 2: earlier in the game, and the Twins were hitting Kurby
- 24:40Speaker 2: pretty well. Seattle played outstanding defense behind them behind him,
- 24:45Speaker 2: and Twins, you know, put up a goose egg against
- 24:49Speaker 2: Kirby and seven innings, five strikeouts. He looked really good
- 24:52Speaker 2: on the line. I the Twins were closer than that
- 24:56Speaker 2: at that point, but Larnick woke them up. And then
- 25:00Speaker 2: Trevor Or Royce Lewis hits a three run homer after
- 25:04Speaker 2: Larna hits the tool, and then Luke Kishaw, who's been
- 25:08Speaker 2: looking really good at the plate lately, went opposite field
- 25:11Speaker 2: off Andris Munos to tie it. That's the first home
- 25:14Speaker 2: run Andris Munos has allowed since May twenty sixth or
- 25:17Speaker 2: twenty eight, and I think it was his first to
- 25:21Speaker 2: a right handed hitter this season. I could be wrong
- 25:23Speaker 2: on that, but I think I heard that in the
- 25:25Speaker 2: press box after the game. So it was a great rally.
- 25:30Speaker 2: It's funny they lost too, and there were tough losses,
- 25:33Speaker 2: and yet you could easily see a shot at them
- 25:36Speaker 2: having swept this series, like you get why they're enthusiastic
- 25:41Speaker 2: about where they are, even though that is a really
- 25:44Speaker 2: when you come away, there's no there's no silver linings,
- 25:46Speaker 2: nothing like that. There really aren't. You need wins, you
- 25:50Speaker 2: need the stack wins. But they played really well all
- 25:53Speaker 2: weekend in a tough place, facing really good starting pitching
- 25:57Speaker 2: all weekend, and without Byron Buckston too, so I thought
- 26:01Speaker 2: that they showed well and even walking away with a series.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Loss fifty six and fifty seven, four games out in
- 26:09Speaker 1: the Central one out in the wildcard races. They head
- 26:12Speaker 1: to Kansas City this week off on Monday on deadline Day,
- 26:16Speaker 1: and then back to it Tuesday. There we'll talk about
- 26:19Speaker 1: Dean Kramer and some more trade thoughts next.

- 27:26Speaker 1: Dean Kramer the latest arrival to the Twins. He was
- 27:30Speaker 1: in the clubhouse Sunday in Seattle and here's who he is.
- 27:34Speaker 1: He comes over from Baltimore, thirty year old right hander
- 27:37Speaker 1: seven years in Major League Baseball, has a multiple pitch
- 27:42Speaker 1: mix there even throws in a slider occasionally as well.
- 27:45Speaker 1: He'll be arbitration eligible after next season, so I think
- 27:48Speaker 1: Dani alluded to that earlier, a little bit, a little
- 27:50Speaker 1: bit more control with him career four three seven ERA
- 27:53Speaker 1: and seven hundred and seven and two thirds innings pitched.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Been a little rougher this year, but that's mostly due
- 27:58Speaker 1: to his last two starts, which were quite bad. He
- 28:01Speaker 1: was out until July with a quad string started off
- 28:04Speaker 1: this season right about on that four point one four
- 28:08Speaker 1: point two eer A line. Uh So, the Twins will
- 28:11Speaker 1: obviously be hoping that he can get back to that
- 28:13Speaker 1: sort of baseline, but he had he has been fairly
- 28:16Speaker 1: consistent with those numbers throughout his career. Dan and the
- 28:19Speaker 1: Twins are, as you said, obviously hoping that he will
- 28:22Speaker 1: help them avoid the every fifth day bullpen game situation.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I think that's huge. I mean, freeze you up. I
- 28:28Speaker 2: know Kendrew Rojas struggled on Sunday, but Kendrew Rojas coming
- 28:33Speaker 2: in and being deployed at whatever way the Twins want
- 28:37Speaker 2: versus being an automatic long man helps the bullpen. And
- 28:42Speaker 2: I think you know, Kramer has been so consistent. It's
- 28:46Speaker 2: just been the same guy for his whole career, seven
- 28:50Speaker 2: plus seasons in the in the big leagues, and like
- 28:54Speaker 2: a four to two sixth are come into this year,
- 28:56Speaker 2: it's about eight strikeouts per nine innings. It's it's not flashy,
- 29:01Speaker 2: but you if you can get a guy that can
- 29:03Speaker 2: go deep into a game and give you six and
- 29:06Speaker 2: three every time, I think you feel good with this offense.
- 29:11Speaker 2: When that's your fifth guy in your rotation, it just
- 29:15Speaker 2: it keeps the team, the bullpen fresher to have consistency
- 29:19Speaker 2: in the rotation. And we know that Connor Prelip at
- 29:22Speaker 2: some point is going to hit the Indians limit and
- 29:24Speaker 2: they're gonna have to say no. And maybe maybe they
- 29:27Speaker 2: choose to use him in a bullpen roll towards the
- 29:30Speaker 2: end of the season. I doubt they will, but I
- 29:32Speaker 2: mean like, it just sets you up better, and it
- 29:36Speaker 2: sets you up in the case of injury, which the
- 29:38Speaker 2: Twins need to do because right now I don't know
- 29:41Speaker 2: who they turned to a triple A if somebody gets hurt.
- 29:44Speaker 2: So adding Kramer was a good move. It's not flashy
- 29:48Speaker 2: at all. Fans are upset because depending on what subscription
- 29:53Speaker 2: service you use for prospects, you know it was a
- 29:57Speaker 2: race jump Nardo. Yeah, he's number the Nard Dog, the
- 30:04Speaker 2: Nard Dog Dog. Great, Yeah, number twelve on Baseball America
- 30:09Speaker 2: number twenty four on MLB dot Com. That's a huge disparity.
- 30:14Speaker 2: You don't know. He really only just now got to
- 30:18Speaker 2: Fort Myers. He hit in the Complex League. That is great.
- 30:21Speaker 2: The Complex League is just the wild West of prosperates.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Scary like I've seen. I saw a guy debut a
- 30:32Speaker 2: couple of years ago in the Complex League. He was
- 30:34Speaker 2: like twenty two or twenty three years old. Time he
- 30:37Speaker 2: came in, he struck out five of six batters. He
- 30:39Speaker 2: looked good, and I'm going, oh, this guy's got a shot.
- 30:42Speaker 2: He's out of baseball like a year later. The Complex
- 30:44Speaker 2: League is all young kids that have just come over
- 30:47Speaker 2: from Dominican Summer League. Sometimes it's guys that just got drafted.
- 30:52Speaker 2: It's it's a very it's rookie ball. Yeah, it's rookie ball.
- 30:58Speaker 2: So and this is not to say that can't be
- 31:01Speaker 2: a good player. This is this is not at all
- 31:04Speaker 2: saying that there's a chance, there's no question, but you
- 31:07Speaker 2: have to give up something to get something. They gave
- 31:09Speaker 2: up a guy that they don't think is gonna be
- 31:11Speaker 2: in the majors in the next four years to get
- 31:13Speaker 2: a starter that they not only think can help them
- 31:15Speaker 2: this year but he adds depth to the rotation next
- 31:18Speaker 2: year too, because you know, who knows what it's gonna
- 31:21Speaker 2: look like with Paba Lo Lopez coming back from Tommy
- 31:24Speaker 2: John and who knows where Joe Ryan's gonna be next year,
- 31:27Speaker 2: Like what's gonna is Mick Abel gonna be ready to start.
- 31:30Speaker 2: There's still gonna be questions about that twenty seven rotation.
- 31:33Speaker 2: If there's a twenty twenty seven Adding Dean Kramer, there's
- 31:37Speaker 2: value there because he's gonna go out every fifth day
- 31:41Speaker 2: and in we got a little bit of an interview
- 31:44Speaker 2: with him. Yeah, I just liked what I heard from
- 31:47Speaker 2: him over the course of the time there. And you know,
- 31:50Speaker 2: he found out eleven thirty on Friday night and had
- 31:53Speaker 2: to go to Camden Yards super early on Saturday morning
- 31:57Speaker 2: and pack and said he only got to say goodbyes
- 31:59Speaker 2: to some of the guys because I believe that had
- 32:01Speaker 2: a night game on Saturday and then had to get
- 32:05Speaker 2: out of there and got to Seattle at like nine
- 32:07Speaker 2: o'clock on Saturday night and was at the ballpark on
- 32:09Speaker 2: Sunday throwing a bullpen.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Here is Dean Kramer with his thoughts. You may have
- 32:14Speaker 1: to turn up a little bit we did the best
- 32:16Speaker 1: we could with the volume, but here it is not
- 32:19Speaker 1: the best hump or I.
- 32:21Speaker 2: But you know, is what been suing part?
- 32:25Speaker 3: What were the emotion It's like you're going one organization
- 32:28Speaker 3: for your entire cards at this point, so leaving that
- 32:31Speaker 3: and then looking ahead to a new chap or what
- 32:33Speaker 3: was that kind of like to get?
- 32:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I'm grateful for every opportunity that could
- 32:38Speaker 2: be Audio is making.
- 32:40Speaker 5: I'm excited to be here, but it's sad, but at
- 32:45Speaker 5: the same time happy and excited for.
- 32:48Speaker 2: For a here opportunity. I'm really excited to hear what
- 32:52Speaker 2: is exciting the most about this opportunity joining a club.
- 32:55Speaker 3: That is making waves to you know, kind of have
- 32:59Speaker 3: that final step and sent me first things really.
- 33:02Speaker 5: To our former Yeah, I mean, I'm happy to help
- 33:04Speaker 5: here in any in any way I can.
- 33:07Speaker 2: But watching from afar, these guys.
- 33:10Speaker 5: So have been wearing their tails off and and uh,
- 33:14Speaker 5: I'm really making.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Up rest playoffs and yeah, I'm happy to help you.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Did you have any sense anything like this could happen? Uh?
- 33:22Speaker 5: No, not not really. Uh it wasn't the last thing
- 33:25Speaker 5: I expected, But also it wasn't the first thing I expected.
- 33:27Speaker 5: H Again, I'm grateful for for every opportunity though I
- 33:31Speaker 5: was gave me, you know, but again, I'm I'm I'm
- 33:34Speaker 5: really happy to hear it.
- 33:35Speaker 2: But do you feel like you've been pitching this year?
- 33:37Speaker 4: Click covers are up, but you want stuff is really? Yeah? Stuff?
- 33:41Speaker 2: Stuff has been normal.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Uh yeah, a little bit on unluckyness and as well
- 33:46Speaker 5: as uh some some damage but you know, keeping all
- 33:51Speaker 5: bit the guys here and helped me out.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Dan figured out the video, so that's good. But the
- 33:58Speaker 1: audio is the next turtle we're gonna have to get over.
- 34:00Speaker 1: It's at a little tough.
- 34:02Speaker 2: Hey, hey, we're not going to do many of these dugouts. Okay,
- 34:05Speaker 2: typically we were in the dugout. I usually look for
- 34:10Speaker 2: soundproof spots, but that was he was coming off the field.
- 34:14Speaker 2: You gotta work with what you have, Zac And your
- 34:16Speaker 2: voice was in my head horizontal not vertical. You take
- 34:21Speaker 2: I believe that's how you said I believe that's how
- 34:24Speaker 2: you said it. You idiots, And and I you know,
- 34:28Speaker 2: you've scarred me enough with your verbal abuse. And even
- 34:32Speaker 2: though you never verbally abused me, and I'm making this
- 34:34Speaker 2: up on the floor, did you allud to it?
- 34:38Speaker 1: But the obviously a move for the starting irritation, but
- 34:42Speaker 1: by extension, also a move for the bullpen. Tyler, do
- 34:46Speaker 1: you do you do the bullpen? Guys hate bullpen games
- 34:49Speaker 1: or love bullpen games because you get to.
- 34:53Speaker 2: It's the worst I mean on it. Well, I'll take
- 34:56Speaker 2: some of that back.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Once the opener became a thing that was kind of
- 35:00Speaker 3: sought after spot because it means you got to pitch
- 35:03Speaker 3: and then just go chill for.
- 35:04Speaker 2: The short day.
- 35:06Speaker 3: If it didn't if it didn't go well, it wasn't
- 35:08Speaker 3: very fun. But I think I did it like I
- 35:10Speaker 3: think it did against New York once. I think I
- 35:13Speaker 3: threw a first pitch slider actually, and it's just one
- 35:15Speaker 3: like it's a wonky day for sure, because everyone's on edge,
- 35:19Speaker 3: you know, for the bullpen especially, it's this roller coaster
- 35:22Speaker 3: that's slowly going up all day until it's your turn
- 35:25Speaker 3: to pitch. And on those days it's like everybody better
- 35:29Speaker 3: lock in early, be ready to go. It's you know,
- 35:32Speaker 3: now nowadays, it's we're gonna do matchups for this game,
- 35:35Speaker 3: you know, so whoever's turn it is is just gonna
- 35:37Speaker 3: go away, and it's it gets hectic and you know,
- 35:40Speaker 3: like we're hitting there he had a solid started guide
- 35:44Speaker 3: to that rotation. You know, Pratis went down, Rojas has
- 35:47Speaker 3: been doing what he's been doing pre lips limited. It's
- 35:51Speaker 3: it's the ripple effect of just having a little bit
- 35:53Speaker 3: more stability added and and it's gonna be it'll pay
- 35:57Speaker 3: off dividend when those guys who may have had to
- 35:58Speaker 3: throw two innings only had to throw two outs or
- 36:02Speaker 3: just finish it in or whatever that their day may
- 36:05Speaker 3: look like. It just it takes that little bit more
- 36:07Speaker 3: of a buffer for them, and it just keeps you
- 36:10Speaker 3: more fresh. You know, a lot of guys will tell
- 36:12Speaker 3: you you have relievers. You just have quick, quick outings,
- 36:15Speaker 3: you know, fifteen pitches or less. You can kind of
- 36:18Speaker 3: do that every day.
- 36:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 36:20Speaker 3: Granted, some guys they're Velo drops or location, you know,
- 36:23Speaker 3: they managed that thing, those things pretty well. But guys
- 36:27Speaker 3: can go pitch every day if you keep it within
- 36:30Speaker 3: a certain threshold. And once those guys go out there
- 36:32Speaker 3: for that second up or have to warm up twice
- 36:35Speaker 3: in a game and then go into the game, it
- 36:37Speaker 3: gets a little different. You know, on the body, it's taxing,
- 36:41Speaker 3: and mentally you're just you know, you're adrenaline spiking and
- 36:44Speaker 3: settling down again, you get worn out, and having a
- 36:47Speaker 3: guy that you can just send out there that's going
- 36:49Speaker 3: to give you five strong, that's all we can ask for.
- 36:52Speaker 3: And if he goes six, even better. And that's you know,
- 36:55Speaker 3: like I keep saying, I've said it several times this year.
- 36:57Speaker 3: For Shelty, that's helpful, for the pitching staff, that's helpful
- 37:00Speaker 3: for everybody involved it.
- 37:01Speaker 2: It's a good thing to have.
- 37:02Speaker 3: And I'm excited to see him get on the mound
- 37:05Speaker 3: in the Twins uniform.
- 37:08Speaker 1: And that'll be Wednesday in Kansas City against Noah Cameron,
- 37:11Speaker 1: who was quite good, quite good blast. The game had
- 37:16Speaker 1: a nice ending, but until then it was pretty rough
- 37:18Speaker 1: for the Twins.
- 37:19Speaker 2: But yeah, dobnak and so we're gonna get them both. Yeah, yep.
- 37:25Speaker 1: We are about six and a half hours away from
- 37:29Speaker 1: the trade deadline as we sit here right now. We
- 37:33Speaker 1: will see what the Twins do, if anything, between now
- 37:35Speaker 1: and then. We're going to bring you another show soon,
- 37:38Speaker 1: maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, to recap whatever the final tally
- 37:42Speaker 1: looks like from the show. So we'll see you then.
- 37:45Speaker 1: That'll be our second show for the week. No show
- 37:47Speaker 1: on Wednesday at least. That's the plan as of now,
