- 0:37Speaker 4: Speaker 44, Speaker 45, Speaker 45 It's.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Like the season within the season.
- 0:40Speaker 4: It's the beginning of something hopefully greater for the University
- 0:44Speaker 4: of Utah. Got the preseason out of the way, got
- 0:47Speaker 4: the non-conference out of the way, and now it's about
- 0:51Speaker 4: really testing yourself, even though I guess there's no guarantee
- 0:55Speaker 4: that Iowa State's going to be any rougher than Arkansas was.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I think they are a better team.
- 1:03Speaker 4: It's probably unfair to Iowa State to draw that comparison.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Arkansas is bad, man. But in any case, we have
- 1:12Speaker 4: plenty to discuss on the Utah football front.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Isn't that nice?
- 1:18Speaker 4: Some more smoke around the possibility of Connor Hellebuck ending
- 1:23Speaker 4: up in a Utah Mammoth sweater. As we march closer
- 1:26Speaker 4: to that season beginning, we're like less than two weeks
- 1:30Speaker 4: away from real regular season. NHL hockey preseason has already begun.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Interesting things happening down south. So we'll check in on
- 1:40Speaker 4: BYU today. Red and blue with Jerem Jordan is coming
- 1:42Speaker 4: for the four of you who get mad that.
- 1:45Speaker 2: I talked with Jerem Jordan.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Every week here on the Sean O'Connell show at noon.
- 1:50Speaker 4: That's when you can listen to your old Melissa Etheridge
- 1:55Speaker 4: CD or something for 20 minutes instead.
- 1:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:58Speaker 4: And then we'll jump right back into being Utah centric.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Like we are every single day here on the show.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Monday night football last night ended up being a look.
- 2:10Speaker 4: It had the potential to be a really interesting matchup.
- 2:14Speaker 4: And we were reminded of the unfortunate reality in contact sports,
- 2:18Speaker 4: sports in general, but contact sports, especially where injuries can
- 2:23Speaker 4: really change how a game is played out. Nobody was
- 2:29Speaker 4: curious to see what the Jamis Winston, Matthew Stafford matchup
- 2:33Speaker 4: was going to look like.
- 2:36Speaker 2: And that's what we got. Um, For the Rams, an important.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Bounce-back victory for the Super Bowl favorites after an abysmal
- 2:45Speaker 4: performance in Australia against the San Francisco 49ers to open
- 2:50Speaker 4: their season, which Sean McVay correctly did the thing where
- 2:56Speaker 4: he made fun of himself and just said, look, sometimes
- 2:58Speaker 4: you have a dumb coach who thinks that he outsmarts
- 3:00Speaker 4: the experts on everything.
- 3:02Speaker 2: We should have flown down to Australia earlier. We didn't.
- 3:05Speaker 4: They wanted to blame it on that, that by the way,
- 3:07Speaker 4: if you're a team and you're a fan base and
- 3:10Speaker 4: you're a franchise, who's really good. And the Rams are
- 3:12Speaker 4: really good. That, that actually gave you a perfect scapegoat,
- 3:17Speaker 4: not Sean McVay's the scapegoat, but you were able to
- 3:19Speaker 4: just say the Niners aren't better than us.
- 3:21Speaker 2: We just traveled wrong.
- 3:23Speaker 4: The Niners aren't a healthy Niners team is not capable
- 3:26Speaker 4: of beating us. We just traveled wrong. It's like, it's
- 3:29Speaker 4: a loss that you take. where you're just like, oh,
- 3:33Speaker 4: I don't have to worry about that one. This is
- 3:35Speaker 4: a thing that exists all the time in sports and
- 3:39Speaker 4: in combat sports, the world that I operate in so often,
- 3:43Speaker 4: it's especially prevalent where somebody will, they'll take a short
- 3:48Speaker 4: notice opportunity, right? Somebody that's supposed to fight drops out
- 3:53Speaker 4: on like a week or two notice, and then you
- 3:57Speaker 4: take the call and you say, yeah, I'll fight, even
- 3:59Speaker 4: though I haven't been preparing, even though I haven't been
- 4:02Speaker 4: I haven't been in camp. I haven't been cutting weight.
- 4:06Speaker 4: I'm not truly ready for this. Yeah, I'll do it.
- 4:10Speaker 4: And then if you lose, you're just like, oh, well
- 4:12Speaker 4: that was house money. I was playing with, I don't
- 4:13Speaker 4: have to worry about that because it's not really me
- 4:17Speaker 4: that lost that fight. It's not really a demonstration of
- 4:20Speaker 4: all that person's better than me or that person is
- 4:23Speaker 4: more skilled or that person is tougher or that person's
- 4:26Speaker 4: more of a professional. It's just, oh, you know what?
- 4:28Speaker 4: Like I, I was there on two weeks notice. So
- 4:32Speaker 4: that one doesn't count. The Rams were able to do
- 4:34Speaker 4: that with their week one loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
- 4:38Speaker 4: And everyone except for me, I think is signing off
- 4:41Speaker 4: on like, well, yeah, it's because of the travel. Not,
- 4:45Speaker 4: not the fact that the Niners are formidable when they're
- 4:47Speaker 4: a hundred percent healthy. Like you look at, and the
- 4:51Speaker 4: Rams also didn't travel Aaron Donald to that game, which
- 4:54Speaker 4: already built in kind of an excuse for them. So what,
- 4:58Speaker 4: what a, what a joyous thing for the Los Angeles
- 5:01Speaker 4: Rams to just be like, ah, it doesn't count. Take
- 5:04Speaker 4: a bull again on that one. I.
- 5:07Speaker 2: You know what? We didn't have a lot of sleep
- 5:09Speaker 2: before that.
- 5:11Speaker 4: People do this when, you know, you and I have
- 5:14Speaker 4: all been guilty of it at some point, right? When
- 5:17Speaker 4: you think you have the imposter syndrome and you think,
- 5:21Speaker 4: I'm probably not going to get this job anyway. So
- 5:23Speaker 4: you do this self-defeating thing where you show up late
- 5:27Speaker 4: to the interview and then the reason you didn't get
- 5:29Speaker 4: the job is because you showed up late to the interview,
- 5:31Speaker 4: not because you don't have the skills, not because you're
- 5:33Speaker 4: hard to talk to, not because you're not the right candidate, but, oh,
- 5:36Speaker 4: because I showed up late.
- 5:38Speaker 5: Right?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Oh, you know, that girl didn't want to.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Go out with me again because I forgot to open
- 5:46Speaker 4: her door or because I forgot my wallet on the date.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Not because you're a pain to be around and obnoxious,
- 5:53Speaker 4: but because you gave yourself an out. The Rams have that.
- 5:57Speaker 4: And I don't think that was the intent when they
- 6:00Speaker 4: traveled the way that they did. I think they really believed, oh,
- 6:03Speaker 4: this is going to be the best thing for us.
- 6:06Speaker 4: But They have it. It's they found that it's the
- 6:10Speaker 4: $ 20 bill in the laundry where you reach into that
- 6:13Speaker 4: pocket and you're just like.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh, look at this. I found this little thing.
- 6:16Speaker 4: I can blame my failure in week one on something
- 6:19Speaker 4: that has nothing to do with me as a football coach, player, whatever.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Or the or my opponent at all being better than me. Like,
- 6:28Speaker 6: I don't even have to say that. I just have
- 6:30Speaker 6: to say we traveled wrong. And it's a viable excuse
- 6:34Speaker 6: because this is the first time in Australia, and we
- 6:36Speaker 6: all know flying to Australia from the United States, from
- 6:39Speaker 6: anywhere in North America, is a crazy long flight. And
- 6:43Speaker 6: not that many people have done it comparatively. And I'm
- 6:47Speaker 6: one of those people, so I could... I could hear
- 6:50Speaker 6: him say that and be like, yeah, that probably tracks.
- 6:53Speaker 2: It's a perfect situation. It's a perfect situation.
- 6:56Speaker 4: And the giants last night, maybe get an opportunity to
- 7:00Speaker 4: do that for themselves because like, oh, well we would
- 7:02Speaker 4: have beat the Rams. If, if Jackson dart doesn't get
- 7:05Speaker 4: hurt and you hate to see Jackson dart, go to
- 7:07Speaker 4: the blue tent one more time. I, I wanted to not,
- 7:15Speaker 4: I'm going to do it anyway. Jackson Dart now is
- 7:18Speaker 4: approaching for me so early in his career. One of
- 7:22Speaker 4: those guys that we might have to before it's all
- 7:24Speaker 4: said and done. And I knock on wood because I
- 7:25Speaker 4: want good things for the kid. I don't want us
- 7:30Speaker 4: to have the conversation about, oh, what might have been
- 7:32Speaker 4: with Jackson Dart? There's a lot of players that we
- 7:35Speaker 4: look at in Utah football history and NFL history. What
- 7:38Speaker 4: might have been with that person? I don't want that
- 7:41Speaker 4: to be the case with Jackson Dart, but that you first,
- 7:43Speaker 4: you have the over prevalence of concussion protocol. And now
- 7:47Speaker 4: the knee is a problem and he's missing a bunch
- 7:49Speaker 4: of time. I don't want it to happen. I'm worried
- 7:52Speaker 4: that we're going to get to that point with Jackson
- 7:54Speaker 4: dart and, and the Rams took care of business last
- 7:58Speaker 4: night and they did it without Puka Nakua. So the
- 8:02Speaker 4: excuses only go so far and they didn't rely on,
- 8:07Speaker 4: they didn't lean on that without Puka.
- 8:09Speaker 2: He's in street clothes last night.
- 8:11Speaker 4: They're just like, oh yeah, by the way, we also
- 8:13Speaker 4: have Devante Adams who had almost 200 yards receiving in
- 8:15Speaker 4: the game.
- 8:16Speaker 2: He was awesome.
- 8:17Speaker 4: No, no miles Garrett either on the defense. No miles Garrett,
- 8:20Speaker 4: but you did bring Aaron Donald back, which was helpful.
- 8:23Speaker 4: And you know, it's just, it's just a crazy thing.
- 8:26Speaker 4: When you look at this NFL Monday night football game,
- 8:29Speaker 4: the two ends of the spectrum and last night could
- 8:31Speaker 4: have been for the, for the giants. at least with
- 8:34Speaker 4: this iteration of the Giants, if you were able to
- 8:37Speaker 4: pull off, keep Jackson Dart healthy, and you're able to
- 8:39Speaker 4: beat a Rams team that was, even if not 100%
- 8:44Speaker 4: full strength, is pretty darn scary and pretty darn good.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Better than most teams talent-wise with that team that they fielded.
- 8:52Speaker 2: And that's not even 100%. For sure.
- 8:54Speaker 4: If you had been able to pull that off, that
- 8:57Speaker 4: could have been a big moment for the Giants. They're
- 8:59Speaker 4: still going to have to hold their breath and wait
- 9:01Speaker 4: and see if they get one of these moments in
- 9:03Speaker 4: the 2026 season. And the reason I'm asking this question
- 9:06Speaker 4: on the text line and on Twitter.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Today, is there a... That is there. Because there is.
- 9:12Speaker 3: What is.
- 9:14Speaker 4: the program defining victory in Utah football history for you
- 9:18Speaker 4: as a youth fan, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 9:20Speaker 4: zero 700 at real OC sports.
- 9:23Speaker 2: What is the win?
- 9:25Speaker 4: Even if it's not the biggest win, right? But it's
- 9:28Speaker 4: the win that you look at and you say, Oh
- 9:30Speaker 4: my gosh, you remember in 1998, when we finally beat
- 9:33Speaker 4: BYU after that long drought or whatever it was like,
- 9:37Speaker 4: what year, what game was for you? And for an
- 9:41Speaker 4: older fan, it's going to be different than for a
- 9:43Speaker 4: younger fan. What is the program defining victory for Utah football?
- 9:50Speaker 4: According to James Peterson, according to Sean O'Connell, according to
- 9:55Speaker 4: Joe Schmo, the program defining victory for Utah football is what?
- 10:01Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 10:02Speaker 4: I'm asking this because I think in like modern Ole
- 10:06Speaker 4: Miss history, we.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Got that this weekend.
- 10:09Speaker 4: We didn't talk about it at all on the show
- 10:10Speaker 4: yesterday because we were packed with other stuff. But Ole
- 10:16Speaker 4: Miss defeating LSU the way that they did over the weekend,
- 10:20Speaker 4: and getting the revenge on lane Kiffin and his return
- 10:24Speaker 4: to Oxford and, and beating the guys that left your
- 10:29Speaker 4: program to go be part of something quote unquote better
- 10:33Speaker 4: or for better money or whatever it was like that
- 10:36Speaker 4: is potentially if Ole miss can do what I think
- 10:39Speaker 4: Ole miss can do with Trinidad shambles as their quarterback.
- 10:44Speaker 2: That is one of those And the bar's high, right, when.
- 10:48Speaker 4: We're talking about a place like Ole Miss. They were
- 10:49Speaker 4: in the playoff last year for hell's sake. They won
- 10:51Speaker 4: a playoff game last year for hell's sake. But, like,
- 10:54Speaker 4: that was one where I look at it, and I
- 10:57Speaker 4: would say, if I'm an Ole Miss fan, that win
- 11:01Speaker 4: probably felt better for me and meant more to me
- 11:04Speaker 4: than winning in the college football playoff did last year,
- 11:07Speaker 4: even though the context was similar, where somebody had left
- 11:10Speaker 4: and someone had said, I want greener grass here. And
- 11:13Speaker 4: even though we're in the pursuit, like a real have
- 11:16Speaker 4: a chance pursuit of a national championship right now, I'm
- 11:19Speaker 4: going to leave for somewhere that I think gives me
- 11:21Speaker 4: a better chance to do that. I'm going to turn
- 11:23Speaker 4: my back on you to go look at something that's
- 11:27Speaker 4: shinier and sexier and fancier. And then they went and
- 11:31Speaker 4: they won a CFP game and it defied a lot
- 11:35Speaker 4: of expectations of doing so.
- 11:36Speaker 2: So I know that was a big moment.
- 11:40Speaker 4: I think this one that we saw last weekend, if
- 11:42Speaker 4: I'm an Ole Miss fan, I'm looking at it, I'm going,
- 11:46Speaker 4: that's when I knew that that's my squad. That's when
- 11:49Speaker 4: I knew that this program is what I want this
- 11:51Speaker 4: program to be. To be fair, as I asked this question, 877-353-0700,
- 11:55Speaker 4: I realized that there is not yet a program defining
- 11:57Speaker 4: victory program. under Morgan Scali, right? So the program has
- 12:08Speaker 4: its own sort of state of flux. And we've been
- 12:11Speaker 4: lucky to have so much consistency for so long that
- 12:14Speaker 4: we don't experience that the same way other fan bases do,
- 12:17Speaker 4: but Morgan Scali at some point, and we're all hoping
- 12:21Speaker 4: it's November 7th is going to have like, Oh, maybe
- 12:25Speaker 4: that's the one, maybe that's the one that defines what
- 12:27Speaker 4: this program is under Morgan.
- 12:30Speaker 2: And maybe it's a Houston game.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Maybe Maybe it's some surprise opponent that we don't know
- 12:35Speaker 4: is going to be your biggest test. Maybe it's a
- 12:36Speaker 4: big 12 championship game this year, next year, the next year,
- 12:38Speaker 4: the next year, whatever. Like these are not permanent fixtures.
- 12:43Speaker 4: The program defining victory before the Fiesta bowl was some
- 12:50Speaker 4: other game. And then when it was, then it probably
- 12:53Speaker 4: became the Fiesta bowl, or maybe it wasn't even the
- 12:56Speaker 4: Fiesta bowl that year for you, because I could tell
- 13:00Speaker 4: you from inside the the program perspective, the festival felt
- 13:04Speaker 4: like kind of.
- 13:05Speaker 2: A formality, like a coronation.
- 13:08Speaker 4: We knew there was no, it was, there was zero dispute.
- 13:12Speaker 4: There was absolutely no doubt that Utah football was going
- 13:18Speaker 4: to win that game. The, the, the matchup was almost
- 13:22Speaker 4: insulting as the first BCS buster. If everyone remembers the
- 13:26Speaker 4: context on this, because it was like automatic bid. The
- 13:31Speaker 4: the big East had to get a team in. And
- 13:34Speaker 4: it happened to be the pit Panthers who were like
- 13:36Speaker 4: ranked number what?
- 13:37Speaker 2: 18. And it was like, ah, this like.
- 13:39Speaker 6: And one really good player, Larry Fitzgerald was on that team,
- 13:42Speaker 6: a Heisman finalist, but they.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Were Larry Fitzgerald was not on. He wasn't on that team. Okay.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I thought he was gone. Then he had, he had departed. Okay.
- 13:51Speaker 2: My bad.
- 13:51Speaker 6: So they didn't even have that headline player that I,
- 13:55Speaker 6: that I thought they'd, they did at that time, but
- 13:57Speaker 6: it just not just a mid team compared to, how
- 14:02Speaker 6: good you guys were.
- 14:03Speaker 4: And that, that old four Utes team, I've told this
- 14:06Speaker 4: story on the air before, but as a jackass, definitely
- 14:11Speaker 4: not going to play in the game. Ridiculous low level
- 14:14Speaker 4: walk on, on that team. We went out, you got down,
- 14:19Speaker 4: we were down in Tempe, you know, mill Avenue down
- 14:21Speaker 4: in Tempe is famous for all of its bars and.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Stuff like that. We went, we watched this.
- 14:27Speaker 4: 1980s rock cover band at some bar and on like
- 14:30Speaker 4: whatever it was a Tuesday night or Wednesday night.
- 14:32Speaker 2: And there was, there were pit Panthers there.
- 14:35Speaker 7: Okay.
- 14:37Speaker 4: There's like 12 of us. There's probably 10 of them.
- 14:40Speaker 4: And we walked up and we were talking to them.
- 14:45Speaker 4: And one of them happened to be their best defensive
- 14:50Speaker 4: lineman is a guy named Vince Crachunas. I just looked
- 14:52Speaker 4: him up on LinkedIn while I Googled him. And the
- 14:55Speaker 4: first thing that came up is his LinkedIn. He looks
- 14:57Speaker 4: great by the way, he's lost all of his playing weight.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I remember talking and we were talking to these pit
- 15:04Speaker 4: Panther guys and like friendly banter back and forth.
- 15:08Speaker 2: And I was like, Oh yeah, who are you? What
- 15:11Speaker 2: are you? And he's like, Oh, I'm a, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: I'm the nose guard.
- 15:13Speaker 4: And I remember feeling comfortable as a, 20 year old
- 15:19Speaker 4: or 19 year old moron.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I was 20.
- 15:22Speaker 4: I remember feeling comfortable talking to this guy and just
- 15:26Speaker 4: being like, dude, you're going to, you guys are going
- 15:29Speaker 4: to get killed tomorrow and you're going to have a
- 15:31Speaker 4: terrible day because he was a D lineman and he
- 15:34Speaker 4: was going to get blocked by Chris K Moyato. And
- 15:37Speaker 4: I spent an entire year just being reminded that there
- 15:40Speaker 4: are levels to this thing. playing scout team against Chris
- 15:43Speaker 4: K Moya too. And I remember like, that's how confident
- 15:47Speaker 4: in the building everyone was about, about the Fiesta bowl
- 15:51Speaker 4: that even the lowest roster was able to go talk
- 15:56Speaker 4: to like an all conference D lineman on the other
- 15:58Speaker 4: team and just be like, dude, tomorrow is going to
- 16:00Speaker 4: be really, really bad for you. There was no, not tomorrow,
- 16:04Speaker 4: this weekend. is going to be really, really bad for you.
- 16:07Speaker 4: There was zero doubt. There was absolutely zero doubt. So
- 16:10Speaker 4: maybe that wasn't even the program defining victory of that
- 16:13Speaker 4: season for you, but there had to be one eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 16:18Speaker 4: zero 700, 1466 says November.
- 16:19Speaker 2: 18th, 1989, Scott Mitchell. Leads the Utes to a win
- 16:26Speaker 2: over the Cougars, right?
- 16:28Speaker 4: So, like, if you're somebody my age, I was six
- 16:32Speaker 4: when that game happened, and I was living in Minnesota.
- 16:35Speaker 4: That's not a program-defining victory for me. I don't even
- 16:37Speaker 4: know what the Utes were at that point. For everyone,
- 16:40Speaker 4: they're going to have a different standpoint, a different viewpoint
- 16:44Speaker 4: on this.
- 16:47Speaker 2: How about this?
- 16:50Speaker 4: Mike, 94-37, the Stanford upset at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Number five,
- 16:56Speaker 4: Stanford comes to Rice Eccles. It was part of the
- 16:58Speaker 4: Bill Riley highlight package at the beginning of his show.
- 17:01Speaker 2: For a long time. Mike writes Bill's call. It's incomplete.
- 17:05Speaker 2: It's incomplete.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:06Speaker 2: A classic win for sure. It was a great win.
- 17:08Speaker 6: It was, it was the first big win of the
- 17:12Speaker 6: PAC 12 era, right? I, it also made me look
- 17:16Speaker 6: really smart. I went on, I was living and was
- 17:19Speaker 6: working in San Francisco on the time and they had
- 17:22Speaker 6: like their version of, you know, whatever sports night live.
- 17:27Speaker 6: on CSN Bay area and they would have the local
- 17:30Speaker 6: pundits come on. And I, I went on there and
- 17:32Speaker 6: I was wearing, I had this like Letterman jacket style
- 17:36Speaker 6: sweatshirt and I had put deliberately underneath the shirt. I
- 17:39Speaker 6: had put on my red Utes, big drum and feather t-shirt.
- 17:44Speaker 4: And at the very end of the segment, Brody Brazil,
- 17:46Speaker 4: shout out to Brody Brazil, who still does a lot
- 17:48Speaker 4: of work with the San Jose sharks.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Brody Brazil was the host.
- 17:52Speaker 4: And he was just like, Oh, by the way, Stanford, Utah,
- 17:54Speaker 4: this weekend, uh, number five, Stanford. And I Superman style,
- 17:59Speaker 4: I opened my sweater and I showed you, so I said,
- 18:02Speaker 4: Utah is going to win this game. And then they
- 18:05Speaker 4: went on and won the game and people in the
- 18:07Speaker 4: Bay area don't care about college football at all, but
- 18:10Speaker 4: at least like four people were just like, wow, you
- 18:11Speaker 4: called that.
- 18:12Speaker 2: And that was a major upset. You must know something.
- 18:15Speaker 4: And I was like, yes, it's definitely expertise and not
- 18:18Speaker 4: me getting lucky.
- 18:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I know.
- 18:20Speaker 6: I know that I'm a big fan of Utah. That's what,
- 18:22Speaker 6: that's what I knew at that time. Yeah, and that
- 18:25Speaker 6: was one of the five and seven Utah football seasons,
- 18:29Speaker 6: early Pac-12. So that was against the fifth-ranked team in
- 18:32Speaker 6: the country at that time. So that absolutely was not
- 18:35Speaker 6: an upset most people had. So an incredible win for sure.
- 18:39Speaker 4: On text, or excuse me, on the tweet machine, 1994
- 18:43Speaker 4: Colorado State. That one wasn't on my radar as even
- 18:47Speaker 4: a possibility. Or the 2008 TCU victory. I think that
- 18:51Speaker 4: one belongs there on the very short list. Like obviously
- 18:55Speaker 4: the sugar bowl was from a national standpoint, a coming
- 18:59Speaker 4: out party for Utah. If people weren't already paying attention
- 19:03Speaker 4: because of the Fiesta bowl team or people had decided
- 19:06Speaker 4: that the Fiesta bowl thing was more of a fluke
- 19:09Speaker 4: and it was attributed mostly to urban Myers presence at
- 19:13Speaker 4: the university of Utah.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And Alex Smith and all that.
- 19:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 19:16Speaker 4: The fact that, that four years later, Kyle Whittingham took
- 19:22Speaker 4: a relatively superstar.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Devoid roster and did that.
- 19:31Speaker 4: There was no, I mean, there were a lot of
- 19:33Speaker 4: NFL guys on that roster, but it wasn't the number
- 19:37Speaker 4: one overall pick. It wasn't a Heisman Trophy finalist, right?
- 19:41Speaker 4: Brian Johnson didn't get to play in the NFL.
- 19:43Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll tell you just from my perspective, because everyone
- 19:46Speaker 6: knows I did not grow up a University Utah fan.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I know.
- 19:52Speaker 6: I knew Eric Weddle and I knew Alex Smith before,
- 19:58Speaker 6: before I started working here.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Because of that. Oh, 14.
- 20:00Speaker 6: And because they ended up having Alex Smith was a
- 20:03Speaker 6: Heisman finalist and he ended up having a really good
- 20:06Speaker 6: NFL career. Eric Weddle had a great NFL career all
- 20:09Speaker 6: the way through. So I knew those two from that team.
- 20:13Speaker 6: Besides Brian Johnson, I don't think I knew a player
- 20:15Speaker 6: from the 08 team. I just knew they beat Alabama.
- 20:18Speaker 6: And now I've learned so many others. Rojo, Sly, huge
- 20:23Speaker 6: key contributors. But I knew the quarterback. And that was
- 20:27Speaker 6: about it at the time.
- 20:29Speaker 4: And, and, and that might be why that's more of a, again,
- 20:31Speaker 4: program defining victory than the Fiesta bowl ever was, because
- 20:36Speaker 4: it was something that you just said, no, this is
- 20:38Speaker 4: Utah football.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Won that game. Alex Smith didn't win that game. Urban
- 20:41Speaker 2: Meyer didn't win that game.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Utah football won that game and upset Alabama. And I,
- 20:48Speaker 4: I wish somebody I'm sure has this recorded.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I wish I have.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Very distinct memories. weirdly clear, clear memory of Barry Switzer
- 21:00Speaker 4: being on the broadcast desk, right? Not on the actual
- 21:03Speaker 4: game call, but on the desk in the studio and
- 21:07Speaker 4: talking pregame about Utah. Doesn't have the size, the speed,
- 21:12Speaker 4: the physicality to hang with these dogs at Alabama. And
- 21:17Speaker 4: he he's sitting in the same chair, wearing the same
- 21:20Speaker 4: suit at halftime and saying the exact thing. But instead
- 21:24Speaker 4: of saying Utah doesn't have this, he's saying Alabama does
- 21:28Speaker 4: not know how to respond to the physicality, the ferocity,
- 21:32Speaker 4: the speed and the size of this Utah football team.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And I remember just being like, wow, two things.
- 21:39Speaker 5: Wow.
- 21:39Speaker 4: How great is that for Utah? And also, wow. How
- 21:42Speaker 4: incredible is it that you can have this job and
- 21:45Speaker 4: literally in the space of two hours, make a confident statement,
- 21:50Speaker 4: like an absolute factual statement. I know this to be true.
- 21:54Speaker 4: And then two hours later, I know the exact opposite
- 21:57Speaker 4: to be true. And nobody is even going to call
- 22:00Speaker 4: you out for it.
- 22:00Speaker 2: This one coming in the ultimate, it's the ultimate. Okay.
- 22:03Speaker 6: I stand corrected. Let me, let me, reverse what I said,
- 22:07Speaker 6: but not doing that, but not doing that.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Like if you do that, if you just say, Hey,
- 22:11Speaker 4: I was wrong, but instead he was just like, Utah
- 22:14Speaker 4: is too big, fast, strong, crazy, too well coached. He
- 22:18Speaker 4: said the exact opposite thing before the game started. I,
- 22:22Speaker 4: that to me was one of those moments where it
- 22:25Speaker 4: forced you to acknowledge that the nation now is paying
- 22:29Speaker 4: attention to Utah in a different way than they did
- 22:33Speaker 4: previous to that game. Like literally before the game started,
- 22:37Speaker 4: the national standpoint was Utah's a fun little story, but
- 22:42Speaker 4: they can't hang with what Alabama's got here. And by halftime,
- 22:45Speaker 4: everyone was just like, actually Utah is a story here.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Utah is this team. So that's a program defining victory.
- 22:53Speaker 4: This one is great from Charles Sorenson. The program-defining win
- 22:57Speaker 4: for me is a twofer. The Utes beat Oregon twice
- 23:00Speaker 4: in the span of three weeks or so, Pac-12 championship,
- 23:04Speaker 4: regular season, highly ranked game at the end of the year,
- 23:07Speaker 4: and punched their ticket to the Rose Bowl. And again,
- 23:09Speaker 4: this was after the season had started in disastrous fashion.
- 23:15Speaker 4: This is after you had lost to BYU and to
- 23:17Speaker 4: San Diego State in back-to-back weeks.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It was like one of those program moments.
- 23:25Speaker 4: That came after a lot of people were ready to
- 23:29Speaker 4: stick a fork in Kyle Whittingham. We're ready to say
- 23:32Speaker 4: that this is not what we thought it was. And
- 23:34Speaker 4: then cam rising comes in and ends up saving the
- 23:37Speaker 4: day over the course of whatever that was a 10
- 23:39Speaker 4: game span.
- 23:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:41Speaker 6: He goes, I was just thinking about this, this morning
- 23:44Speaker 6: for just randomly, he goes nine and one as a
- 23:48Speaker 6: starter that year. And like you just said, completely turns
- 23:51Speaker 6: the season around. And not only that they're, a power
- 23:54Speaker 6: five conference champion for the first time.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Unbelievable season.
- 23:58Speaker 4: Speaker 0 4,872 says when I was younger, the 2008
- 24:01Speaker 4: sugar bowl or the upset over number five Stanford more
- 24:04Speaker 4: recently beating USC in the Coliseum in 2021 for the
- 24:08Speaker 4: first time ever. And then beating Oregon twice that USC
- 24:12Speaker 4: win was so sweet though. And absolutely it was, it
- 24:14Speaker 4: was a bad, this was pre Lincoln Riley pre Caleb Williams,
- 24:18Speaker 4: but it was, I mean, it felt as good as
- 24:21Speaker 4: beating those as beating those teams, which he ended up
- 24:23Speaker 4: beating three times in a row after that for, for you,
- 24:27Speaker 4: it's fans for sure. 8 7 7 3 5 3
- 24:29Speaker 4: 0 700 at real OC sports. Tell me the program
- 24:31Speaker 4: defining victory for you as a Utah football fan. And
- 24:35Speaker 4: every program I think has their own. I think that
- 24:38Speaker 4: NFL teams have their own. And the fairest thing to
- 24:43Speaker 4: do is to kind of separate out like the true
- 24:46Speaker 4: errors of a program, right? Because the, the 2008 TCU
- 24:52Speaker 4: win while the sugar bowl was a, something that let
- 24:56Speaker 4: it put everyone on notice. It's one of those things
- 24:58Speaker 4: that if you're a youth fan, it's like, do you
- 25:01Speaker 4: remember when we knew at this moment, how special that
- 25:04Speaker 4: team was because that game was so important. It was
- 25:08Speaker 4: so hard fought. It was so back and forth and
- 25:10Speaker 4: it was so crucial. You, you never get to be
- 25:14Speaker 4: part of that national conversation on that sugar bowl stage.
- 25:17Speaker 4: If you don't, kind of wind in the dark in
- 25:20Speaker 4: a night game.
- 25:21Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 25:22Speaker 4: If you don't let people know within your own community,
- 25:26Speaker 4: your own smaller circle, your sphere of conference football play
- 25:30Speaker 4: that you're the top dogs there. That's why the Fiesta
- 25:32Speaker 4: bowl one for me is actually like, was there a
- 25:37Speaker 4: program defining victory in that season?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Because BYU wasn't that great that year.
- 25:43Speaker 4: It was like they were kind of a marginal team
- 25:45Speaker 4: and we blew the doors off BYU and the tortillas
- 25:49Speaker 4: were flying down because everyone knew that you're going to
- 25:51Speaker 4: the Fiesta Bowl and things like that. You started the
- 25:54Speaker 4: season with a win over Texas A & M. That
- 25:57Speaker 4: was kind of a big deal because Texas A &
- 25:59Speaker 4: M is still Texas A & M and you're still Utah.
- 26:02Speaker 4: But I have a hard time even thinking of one
- 26:05Speaker 4: win that year that was just like, yeah, that's when...
- 26:09Speaker 4: like that game itself was the game. I think that
- 26:13Speaker 4: just the season, right? It was more of the season,
- 26:15Speaker 4: but I also think that maybe the program defining victory
- 26:19Speaker 4: for that, that Fiesta bowl season maybe actually took place
- 26:24Speaker 4: in the 2003 season when urban was first here.
- 26:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:28Speaker 4: And went 10 and two and won the conference championship.
- 26:32Speaker 4: And it was the BYU game, the three, nothing.
- 26:36Speaker 2: In the snow, maybe.
- 26:37Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 26:38Speaker 4: That should not be a program defining victory for anybody
- 26:41Speaker 4: for anything.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Cause that game was miserable.
- 26:45Speaker 6: I mean, that's the, that's the one again is someone
- 26:48Speaker 6: who was not a Utah football fan at the time.
- 26:52Speaker 6: That's the only one that I've really heard of from
- 26:54Speaker 6: that season was the, because it's talked about all the time,
- 26:57Speaker 6: how crazy and just hard fought and ugly that win was.
- 27:02Speaker 4: It was a hideous game. I mean, just a really,
- 27:05Speaker 4: really bad gross game. Maybe beating Aaron Rogers and Cal.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Yeah. Okay.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Could have been one that you would say Colorado on Lynch,
- 27:13Speaker 2: I think was on that Cal team to beat Oregon
- 27:15Speaker 2: that year.
- 27:16Speaker 4: That you beat Oregon 1713 at rice Eccles stadium. That
- 27:21Speaker 4: by the way, you want to talk about a really
- 27:23Speaker 4: cool year. You started the year with Utah state, went
- 27:27Speaker 4: to Texas a and M lost that game in a
- 27:29Speaker 4: close one on the road, beat Cal, right?
- 27:33Speaker 2: This is when you're a mountain West conference team.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:35Speaker 4: You played Texas a and M Cal and Oregon in
- 27:40Speaker 4: the first five weeks of the season. And you won
- 27:43Speaker 4: two of those three. And two of them were at home.
- 27:46Speaker 4: Cal and Oregon were both at home. But, yeah, I mean,
- 27:51Speaker 4: you would probably call the Air Force game, both of
- 27:54Speaker 4: those years, actually, was really, really good. The Liberty Bowl
- 27:59Speaker 4: against Southern Miss, I don't know. David on the text
- 28:05Speaker 4: line says, when I was little, Ronnie Mack came in
- 28:06Speaker 4: and beat Minnesota off a blocked field goal and run
- 28:08Speaker 4: back for a touchdown in 1990 and then beating BYU
- 28:10Speaker 4: in 1993 for the first 34-31. It was then I
- 28:16Speaker 4: knew we could be a better team and program than
- 28:19Speaker 4: BYU for the first time in my life. That is a,
- 28:22Speaker 4: that is a beautiful text. And I'll tell you why,
- 28:25Speaker 4: because that's what I mean by program defining.
- 28:28Speaker 2: You're doing a better job articulating this than I am.
- 28:30Speaker 4: And it's my job to articulate things. That program defining
- 28:34Speaker 4: moment is what I'm talking about. If you have a thing,
- 28:37Speaker 4: if you have a realization, a light bulb, an aha
- 28:41Speaker 4: moment because of something you watch on the field, right?
- 28:45Speaker 4: Like when, when Dalton Kincaid goes off for 200 and
- 28:49Speaker 4: something yards against USC. And it was just, we, even
- 28:54Speaker 4: though we're not in a perfect scenario from a health
- 28:56Speaker 4: standpoint as this Utah football team, and we're not in
- 28:59Speaker 4: a perfect scenario in terms of like having all the
- 29:02Speaker 4: right weapons, we are going to find a way to win.
- 29:05Speaker 2: That's what I'm talking about. If you were a fan
- 29:08Speaker 2: and you watched.
- 29:09Speaker 4: In 1993 and felt for the first time, you know
- 29:12Speaker 4: what we might actually win.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Be capable of doing this all the time.
- 29:17Speaker 4: And we might actually be capable of beating our rival
- 29:20Speaker 4: on a regular basis. When you had suffered for nearly
- 29:24Speaker 4: two decades of any win for Utah prior to Ron
- 29:28Speaker 4: McBride was kind of flukish. And like that was, it was,
- 29:31Speaker 4: that was the Lavelle Edwards time at BYU. And that
- 29:34Speaker 4: was the, the national championship year for BYU and all
- 29:38Speaker 4: the aftermath and the Heisman trophy and all this stuff
- 29:41Speaker 4: like that was West coast offense.
- 29:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:44Speaker 4: That was a really, that was a time where you
- 29:47Speaker 4: were the little brother in the state. And if you
- 29:50Speaker 4: had a victory, if you had a moment in it,
- 29:52Speaker 4: in for David van Orden on the text line, it
- 29:54Speaker 4: is 1993, 34, 31.
- 29:55Speaker 2: If you had a moment in.
- 29:59Speaker 4: That showed you, you know what, we don't have to
- 30:01Speaker 4: be little brother anymore. And then obviously it was the
- 30:05Speaker 4: beginning of bigger things, right? It was the beginning of,
- 30:08Speaker 4: of at least parody in that rivalry. And then it
- 30:12Speaker 4: opened up a stretch that eventually turned into Utah dominance
- 30:14Speaker 4: in that rivalry. And now all of us hold our
- 30:17Speaker 4: breath to see what the Morgan Scali version of Utah
- 30:20Speaker 4: versus BYU is going to look like. But David, that
- 30:22Speaker 4: is the best text we've had on any question in
- 30:25Speaker 4: a long time. So I appreciate you throwing that one in.
- 30:28Speaker 6: I would say, if you do it, if you separate
- 30:31Speaker 6: it by eras, certainly Scott Mitchell's blowout in the late
- 30:35Speaker 6: 80s that ended the long win streak that BYU had
- 30:39Speaker 6: against Utah. I think for that era, pre-Ron McBride, that
- 30:47Speaker 6: might be program defining. And then you talk about David's
- 30:52Speaker 6: texts about early Ron McBride era, for sure. And then
- 30:57Speaker 6: probably we had a hard time finding one in the
- 31:00Speaker 6: Urban Meyer era other than just saying the 04 season
- 31:03Speaker 6: as a whole was program-defining? And I wonder if that's
- 31:06Speaker 6: just because... There was never, there wasn't a close game.
- 31:11Speaker 2: It might be that Cal team. It might be Cal
- 31:14Speaker 2: win in 03.
- 31:14Speaker 4: Because again, you're like, you had gone on the road
- 31:18Speaker 4: to Texas A & M and you'd almost beat Texas
- 31:20Speaker 4: A & M.
- 31:20Speaker 5: Right.
- 31:21Speaker 4: And then you come back and you beat a Cal team.
- 31:23Speaker 4: That was, that was Tedford. That was highly thought of.
- 31:26Speaker 4: That was Aaron Rogers. That was Marshawn Lynch. That was like,
- 31:29Speaker 4: that was a really, really, really incredible.
- 31:32Speaker 6: That was the rival to USC in the pack 10
- 31:34Speaker 6: era back then.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And you are this guy.
- 31:37Speaker 4: Upstart Mountain West conference team that had, you know, a
- 31:40Speaker 4: beloved coach.
- 31:41Speaker 2: You had moved on from a beloved coach.
- 31:43Speaker 4: That was not a universally popular move by Chris Hill.
- 31:47Speaker 4: When it happened, there were, there were players in the
- 31:49Speaker 4: program that, that were furious about Ron McBride being separated
- 31:53Speaker 4: from his duties as a head coach. And we're grateful that,
- 31:56Speaker 4: you know, it all came out in the wash and
- 31:59Speaker 4: coach Mack stayed close to Utah and he stayed close
- 32:02Speaker 4: to the program. And he's still in the building now,
- 32:04Speaker 4: you know, he's still there all the time.
- 32:06Speaker 5: Right.
- 32:06Speaker 4: And like, it didn't burn bridges in a way that
- 32:09Speaker 4: sometimes firings do.
- 32:10Speaker 2: And that's great.
- 32:12Speaker 4: But like the context of what was going on there,
- 32:16Speaker 4: you brought in a random dude from bowling green And yes,
- 32:21Speaker 4: he was considered like a wunderkind coach. He was 39
- 32:24Speaker 4: years old. I think that's right. He was, he was
- 32:26Speaker 4: very young and you're older now than he was when
- 32:30Speaker 4: he took the Utah job. I'm older now than he
- 32:32Speaker 4: was when he coached me at Utah. And you know what?
- 32:36Speaker 4: It's crazy because this is now 20 something years ago.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Now it's pretty common. Even NFL coaches are in their 30s.
- 32:44Speaker 4: Back in the early 2000s and every period of football
- 32:49Speaker 4: history up until that point, basically, it was prohibitively rare
- 32:53Speaker 4: for someone to have a head coaching opportunity.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Before they were 40 years old. You've got to have
- 32:57Speaker 2: some gray in your hair.
- 32:59Speaker 4: It was just a thing. It was kind of like
- 33:01Speaker 4: you didn't used to play true freshman. You had red
- 33:03Speaker 4: shirt on and you've got to earn your keep, kid.
- 33:05Speaker 2: There was just a time. I don't know. It's just tradition.
- 33:08Speaker 2: It's so different now. It's very, very, very different now.
- 33:11Speaker 5: But.
- 33:12Speaker 4: Program-defining victories for the 2004 season might have happened in
- 33:17Speaker 4: the 2003 year when the guys that ended up being
- 33:22Speaker 4: the quarterback and being the safety and being the linebacker
- 33:25Speaker 4: and being the starting D tackles and being the starting
- 33:29Speaker 4: offensive guard that ended up the core of an undefeated unit,
- 33:35Speaker 4: like those guys perhaps earned their belief that this was
- 33:39Speaker 4: actually going to work when... they beat Cal and they
- 33:44Speaker 4: beat Oregon. And they were just like, Oh, guess what?
- 33:46Speaker 4: These teams are supposed to be bigger, stronger, faster.
- 33:50Speaker 2: They eat better.
- 33:51Speaker 4: They travel better. They look better in the uniform. They're
- 33:55Speaker 4: all schools that we would have liked to have gone to.
- 33:57Speaker 4: And guess what? We beat two of those teams in a,
- 34:01Speaker 4: in a three week span.
- 34:02Speaker 2: And we held our own against the other one.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:04Speaker 2: It's pretty cool.
- 34:05Speaker 4: When you really think about it, David on the text
- 34:07Speaker 4: line says, Program changing moment.
- 34:10Speaker 2: The program exploded when Urban got the job.
- 34:13Speaker 4: My first Crimson Club lunch at University of Marriott with
- 34:15Speaker 4: maybe 50 people. Lunch, too, was overpacked. Never seen energy
- 34:20Speaker 4: this high at Utah Urban. Single-handedly changed the trajectory. Bigger
- 34:23Speaker 4: than night and day. Energy excitement and earth-scorching fire. Huge
- 34:27Speaker 4: day in Utah history. I don't dispute you saying that,
- 34:31Speaker 4: but what was the defining win? I'm talking about the game.
- 34:35Speaker 4: The program-defining game. David, thank you for the feedback. That
- 34:38Speaker 4: could have been a moment.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Eight, seven, seven.
- 34:40Speaker 6: In hindsight, you can easily say, yeah, that's program defining,
- 34:44Speaker 6: but he hadn't proved it until you, until you win
- 34:46Speaker 6: a big game.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Eight, seven, seven, three, five, three, zero 700. Last one.
- 34:51Speaker 2: And then we'll take a break. We'll come back. We'll
- 34:52Speaker 2: read some more.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Okay.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Maybe it wasn't program defining moment, but it really showed
- 34:56Speaker 4: we had turned the corner. It was that mid nineties
- 34:58Speaker 4: beat down twice. I'll be why you 3431.
- 35:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 35:03Speaker 4: After the second loss in the game, after in the
- 35:05Speaker 4: after game interview, famous BYU player, Chad Lewis said 3431.
- 35:08Speaker 6: I'd never want to hear that number again. The 3431.
- 35:13Speaker 6: And again, this is something that I've learned about since
- 35:16Speaker 6: I started working here.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Oh, see 3431. I mean, those absolutely apply.
- 35:21Speaker 6: It's the, any one of the, either one of those
- 35:23Speaker 6: 3431 wins over BYU in the early part of Coach
- 35:28Speaker 6: Max coaching tenure. Absolutely apply as program changing wins in
- 35:33Speaker 6: my book.
- 35:36Speaker 4: It was back to back years in 93 and 94.
- 35:41Speaker 4: That's pretty incredible. Once on the road, once at home,
- 35:45Speaker 4: 55 yard field goal in the final seconds to break
- 35:51Speaker 4: a 22 year losing skid on.
- 35:54Speaker 2: The road in Provo. Imagine being the kicker.
- 35:58Speaker 4: Chris Jurgensen, come on the show with us.
- 36:02Speaker 2: 877-353-0700.
- 36:04Speaker 4: You have not won in Provo for 22 years. This
- 36:07Speaker 4: is like, again, we had this. Remember when the Utes
- 36:09Speaker 4: hadn't won at USC in a century, and they finally
- 36:12Speaker 4: got that win? This one is against a rival. 34-31,
- 36:16Speaker 4: and then you do it again the very next year.
- 36:18Speaker 4: I love, love the responses we're getting on this. We'll
- 36:21Speaker 4: keep reading them. We'll keep giving them some air time here.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Jerem Jordan's going to join us at noon. Jeff Schwartz
- 36:29Speaker 4: is going to join us at 1. We're off and
- 36:32Speaker 4: rolling on a Tuesday edition of the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 36:34Speaker 4: It's 877-353-0700. If you want to weigh in on Utah's
- 36:38Speaker 4: number one sports talk.
- 36:40Speaker 2: That's me in the corner.
- 36:43Speaker 3: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show for the Murdoch
- 36:46Speaker 3: Chevrolet Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 36:48Speaker 2: Trying to keep up here.
- 36:57Speaker 3: And I don't know if I can do it. Oh, no,
- 37:03Speaker 3: I've said too much.
- 37:05Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. We're talking about
- 37:07Speaker 4: program-defining victories. Every era, you need one. This is pro teams.
- 37:13Speaker 4: This is your high school team. This is a college team. And,
- 37:16Speaker 4: of course, we're the home of the youth, so we're
- 37:17Speaker 4: focusing on what you call the program-defining victory in Utah
- 37:23Speaker 4: football history, a game-defining that you watched that win and said, oh,
- 37:28Speaker 4: I'm going to remember that for the rest of my life.
- 37:29Speaker 2: And maybe you have continued to remember it.
- 37:33Speaker 4: If you're in your 60s or 70s, your idea might
- 37:36Speaker 4: be a little bit different than someone who jumped on
- 37:38Speaker 4: this bandwagon and is just in their early 20s or
- 37:41Speaker 4: something like that because it's been a really interesting– James
- 37:45Speaker 4: and I were talking about it during the break.
- 37:46Speaker 2: It's been a really interesting.
- 37:47Speaker 4: Era-dependent sort of ascent for the University of Utah because
- 37:53Speaker 4: I– I had zero awareness of Utah before the Ron
- 37:58Speaker 4: McBride era, right?
- 37:59Speaker 2: That's when I moved to Utah.
- 38:01Speaker 4: That's when we became Utahns and started to become aware
- 38:05Speaker 4: of what you university of Utah football was supposed to be.
- 38:08Speaker 4: And you were already out of the sort of darkness
- 38:11Speaker 4: of a lot of really bad years. And then previous
- 38:14Speaker 4: to those bad years, you had some really good years
- 38:17Speaker 4: and some fun stuff, but I wasn't alive for the
- 38:21Speaker 4: 1964 Liberty bowl or whatever. So yeah, The program defining
- 38:27Speaker 4: victories come in waves and in stages, depending on what
- 38:31Speaker 4: program we're talking about. If you are a fan of
- 38:35Speaker 4: like a dyed in the wool, longtime blue blood, Notre
- 38:39Speaker 4: Dame and their program defining victories have, they all came
- 38:44Speaker 4: like the most recent one.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Was in like 1991. Yeah. Was that still Lou Holtz?
- 38:50Speaker 2: It's as the coach.
- 38:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:51Speaker 6: I mean, it's like, you have to go too far back. Yeah,
- 38:54Speaker 6: and I was talking about me personally. I can't even
- 38:57Speaker 6: think of one as an Ohio State fan for much
- 39:01Speaker 6: of my life. I would say, you know, maybe them
- 39:05Speaker 6: blowing out Tennessee a couple years ago at the beginning
- 39:08Speaker 6: of their national title run under Ryan Day because there
- 39:11Speaker 6: was a lot of, like, Is this program where it
- 39:13Speaker 6: needs to be? But that is nothing compared to what
- 39:16Speaker 6: we're talking about for University of Utah.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Again, the Ohio States and Notre Dames and USC's of
- 39:23Speaker 4: the world, they're very different. Maybe USC's the wrong example
- 39:28Speaker 4: to use there because what would be the defining... difference
- 39:31Speaker 4: like program defining victory for USC under Lincoln Riley.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Does he have one? I don't know if he does.
- 39:37Speaker 4: It would have been beating Utah. Not by a USC standard.
- 39:43Speaker 4: He doesn't have that.
- 39:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 39:44Speaker 8: Right.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Like the USC standard is national championship. So he doesn't
- 39:48Speaker 4: have one of those Utah's is a little bit different.
- 39:51Speaker 4: And like, we're going to have Jerem Jordan on in
- 39:54Speaker 4: about 15 minutes. There's several, uh, Stages of this that
- 39:59Speaker 4: you could use for BYU, the independence era didn't have
- 40:03Speaker 4: for me like a, an obvious program defining victory in
- 40:07Speaker 4: the independence here. And now that they're out of that,
- 40:10Speaker 4: I think they have a big opportunity to, to, maybe
- 40:14Speaker 4: snag another one this year. I think they've already grabbed
- 40:17Speaker 4: one or two. The fact that they broke the streak
- 40:20Speaker 4: against the university of Utah and the rivalry game like
- 40:23Speaker 4: that probably is one that fits that bill for them.
- 40:26Speaker 4: You go all the way back to 1984 and they,
- 40:29Speaker 4: them winning a national championship. You got to, you got
- 40:32Speaker 4: to assume that there's some program defining memories for people,
- 40:36Speaker 4: but for who, for now everyone's grandparents, no, like, The
- 40:42Speaker 4: modern Cougar fan that is in their 30s and 40s
- 40:47Speaker 4: does not have a real memory of that. That doesn't
- 40:51Speaker 4: define your experience with BYU football. Yes, it's part of
- 40:56Speaker 4: the history, and that's great, but it's not what you remember.
- 40:59Speaker 4: It's not the thing that told you why you needed
- 41:02Speaker 4: to be a BYU fan. So the program defining victory
- 41:06Speaker 4: for the University of Utah... couple interesting ones here. 33
- 41:11Speaker 4: 66 says my program defining win was unranked Utah blowing
- 41:16Speaker 4: out number 18, Oregon in Eugene 62 to 20.
- 41:19Speaker 2: That was a huge one.
- 41:21Speaker 4: It turned out to be a mediocre Oregon team, but
- 41:23Speaker 4: that was the first time Utah absolutely lit up a
- 41:26Speaker 4: ranked pack 12 team and never let up instead of
- 41:28Speaker 4: playing it safe.
- 41:29Speaker 2: They did it to Oregon in their house. what Oregon
- 41:33Speaker 2: had been doing to other teams.
- 41:34Speaker 4: It was a glorious and a life affirming victory and
- 41:36Speaker 4: showed that anything was possible for Utah football and in life.
- 41:41Speaker 2: That's from Fong on the text line. I love that.
- 41:44Speaker 2: And shout out. That was Travis Wilson, right?
- 41:48Speaker 4: That was a, that was a, for me, the most
- 41:53Speaker 4: polarizing quarterback that we've had in Utah football was that
- 41:57Speaker 4: guy because at his very best, holy cow, what a weapon.
- 42:00Speaker 4: And at his very worst, you were just like, have
- 42:03Speaker 4: you ever played the position of quarterback before?
- 42:06Speaker 2: So that was awesome to see him get a win
- 42:09Speaker 2: like that.
- 42:10Speaker 6: And that, I think that if you're going to say,
- 42:14Speaker 6: if you're going to call pre PAC 12 championship, PAC
- 42:17Speaker 6: 12 era, its own era, if you will, there's a
- 42:21Speaker 6: little bit of mouthful.
- 42:21Speaker 2: I just did there.
- 42:22Speaker 6: But if you're going to call 2011 to 2020, through
- 42:26Speaker 6: twenty twenty as its own separate era from what we've
- 42:29Speaker 6: had since then i think there's that one and there's
- 42:33Speaker 6: the stanford win that.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Are probably the two biggest david who texted us about
- 42:38Speaker 4: the crimson club did i still want a game for
- 42:41Speaker 4: you david and i i i'm not challenging you in
- 42:45Speaker 4: a mean way or a bad way because i'm just
- 42:48Speaker 4: i'm challenging you to tell me the game because this
- 42:51Speaker 4: person has seen maybe more than the rest of us
- 42:53Speaker 4: have he says my first in-person game was 1970 versus
- 42:57Speaker 4: utep and i've only missed six home games and one
- 43:00Speaker 4: bowl game since 1970 i've seen a lot of utah
- 43:03Speaker 4: football it's an unfair ask but i'm asking you to
- 43:06Speaker 4: now narrow it down to the one victory that for
- 43:09Speaker 4: you in what is that 56 years of actual in-person
- 43:14Speaker 4: Utah fandom, what is the one victory that you say
- 43:17Speaker 4: that defines what Utah football is for me? That's what
- 43:20Speaker 4: I'm asking here because I, I, I, I launched into
- 43:24Speaker 4: this off the trampoline of Ole miss beating LSU in.
- 43:29Speaker 2: What was, it's a regular season game.
- 43:32Speaker 4: It's a highly ranked matchup, but it's just a, it's
- 43:35Speaker 4: an early regular season game. Both of those teams are
- 43:39Speaker 4: probably going to end up in the college football playoff.
- 43:41Speaker 4: They're probably going to have an opportunity to play in
- 43:43Speaker 4: that context again. But the reason I, if I'm a
- 43:47Speaker 4: Ole Miss fan, I look at that and it's somewhat
- 43:51Speaker 4: program defining for me or fandom defining for me is
- 43:55Speaker 4: because it was like a pure revenge opportunity. It was
- 43:59Speaker 4: nothing but a, let me throw a double bird at
- 44:02Speaker 4: the guy who abandoned us thinking that he was off
- 44:05Speaker 4: to a better situation.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Let's show him.
- 44:07Speaker 4: It's not a better situation that what he left could
- 44:10Speaker 4: have been just as good or maybe even better. That
- 44:15Speaker 4: is one of those things that if you're a fan,
- 44:17Speaker 4: if you're like a teenager who got lucky enough to
- 44:20Speaker 4: get dragged to that game and you're caught up in
- 44:23Speaker 4: that environment, and now you're in love with Pete Golding,
- 44:26Speaker 4: you think he's the best thing on two feet and you,
- 44:29Speaker 4: You're going to ride for Ole Miss, especially against LSU,
- 44:33Speaker 4: until the end of time. That's what made me think
- 44:35Speaker 4: about this, and I love it. This is from Cade. Oh,
- 44:43Speaker 4: talking about, that was also Tom Hackett's sweet fake punt
- 44:48Speaker 4: after his first punt hit the Skycam wire.
- 44:50Speaker 5: Wow.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Shout out to my guy, Tom Hackett, former co-host of mine,
- 44:53Speaker 4: by the way, right here in this very studio.
- 44:56Speaker 2: I love Tom Hackett.
- 44:57Speaker 4: Apparently, we didn't do great radio together, though, because that
- 44:59Speaker 4: thing only lasted for a couple months. But, yeah, really,
- 45:03Speaker 4: really good responses here. I want to make sure we
- 45:05Speaker 4: got all of them. This is from Michael. I'm younger
- 45:09Speaker 4: than James, so mine is probably less grassroots than the
- 45:11Speaker 4: older folk, but 2014 Utah at UCLA. I was young,
- 45:15Speaker 4: and that made me feel like Utah could hang with
- 45:16Speaker 4: the big dogs, beat UCLA's behind at the line of scrimmage.
- 45:21Speaker 2: Was that Joe Williams game? Is that what that was?
- 45:23Speaker 2: Or is that later? And was.
- 45:29Speaker 4: That 2014 Utah versus UCLA? Thank goodness for high-speed internet.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Am I right? Seriously?
- 45:37Speaker 4: Andy Phillips hit a 29 yard field goal with 34
- 45:40Speaker 4: seconds left in the fourth quarter.
- 45:42Speaker 2: Shout out to our.
- 45:42Speaker 6: Guy, Andy Phillips, Andy automatica, Kendall Thompson.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Came in for Travis Wilson in the first quarter. He
- 45:53Speaker 4: rushed for 83 yards.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Okay, so it was not the Joe Williams. It was
- 45:56Speaker 2: not the Joe Williams.
- 45:58Speaker 4: That was a home game, right? The Joe Williams return game,
- 46:00Speaker 4: or was it on the road? I thought that was
- 46:02Speaker 4: at the Rose Bowl. Could be wrong about that.
- 46:06Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 46:06Speaker 4: Joe Williams, Utah return game. What a crazy thing that was.
- 46:14Speaker 4: Still a single game rushing record.
- 46:21Speaker 6: That's a great submission by, by Michael Dawson though, that,
- 46:24Speaker 6: that 2014 UCLA game, not one that we.
- 46:28Speaker 4: That either one of us thought of 332 yards on
- 46:32Speaker 4: 29 carries.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Mike Anderson.
- 46:35Speaker 4: He shattered Mike Anderson's previous record of 254 yards in
- 46:39Speaker 4: one game in 1999.
- 46:41Speaker 2: And then.
- 46:45Speaker 4: It's the most in an FBS game since Oklahoma Samaj
- 46:48Speaker 4: P Ryan ran for a four 27.
- 46:49Speaker 2: That was Who was it? Okay.
- 46:54Speaker 4: Who, who held, was it Samaj P Ryan held that
- 46:58Speaker 4: record for, or no, it was Monty ball, right?
- 47:03Speaker 2: That held the record.
- 47:04Speaker 4: He held the record for one week and then Samaj
- 47:07Speaker 4: P Ryan broke the record one week later. Monty ball,
- 47:11Speaker 4: Notre Dame, right?
- 47:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:12Speaker 2: Wisconsin, right? Or Wisconsin. My bad.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Good old stuff. It was UCLA, Joe Williams.
- 47:20Speaker 3: Wow.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Fun stuff.
- 47:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:21Speaker 2: That's a Rose bowl record.
- 47:22Speaker 5: Is it not?
- 47:24Speaker 2: I think it might be.
- 47:24Speaker 6: It's gotta be not Roseville game record, but a record
- 47:29Speaker 6: in that building.
- 47:29Speaker 4: 74 89 says, here's another one, 2015 Cougs in the
- 47:32Speaker 4: middle of their independent streak, the path they took to
- 47:35Speaker 4: save face after the, okay. And the first play of
- 47:38Speaker 4: the game, Utah O-line actually flattened the Cougar line.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Okay.
- 47:44Speaker 4: I don't know if that was program defining, but that
- 47:46Speaker 4: was a good one.
- 47:47Speaker 2: It was great. Utah sacked Brett, Brett Hundley like 10 times.
- 47:53Speaker 2: That was also great.
- 47:54Speaker 6: And that 2014 UCLA game.
- 47:58Speaker 4: Utah versus USC rice cycles, October 15th, 2022 fourth quarter
- 48:02Speaker 4: comeback going for two to get the win from Larry.
- 48:06Speaker 4: That is, I still think that is the loudest in
- 48:11Speaker 4: stadium rice cycle stadium moment I've ever experienced.
- 48:15Speaker 2: I have a video somewhere on my phone.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Uh, you know what you're, when you're in the media,
- 48:20Speaker 4: you're lucky enough to get the, you get to stand
- 48:22Speaker 4: on the sideline and I'm like right.
- 48:25Speaker 2: There on the goal line. Are you next to Porter?
- 48:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:28Speaker 6: I was next to Porter has a story about his
- 48:31Speaker 6: microphone that he was holding getting destroyed by cam rising
- 48:35Speaker 6: as he ran through, as he ran to the back
- 48:36Speaker 6: of the end zone.
- 48:38Speaker 4: I think actually I was, I wasn't next to Porter.
- 48:41Speaker 4: I think I was, uh, more like on the goal line,
- 48:43Speaker 4: like the side view.
- 48:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:45Speaker 6: Let's see what, Porter must have been in the back
- 48:47Speaker 6: of the end zone because he says his microphone broke
- 48:51Speaker 6: because of how hard Cam Rising was running through the
- 48:55Speaker 6: end zone.
- 48:56Speaker 4: I do appreciate that our texters are so adept that
- 49:00Speaker 4: they throw the actual date in here so I can
- 49:02Speaker 4: just find it on my phone.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 49:05Speaker 4: I have the video right here. I'm going to watch it.
- 49:07Speaker 4: I'll watch it during the break. It's going to make
- 49:09Speaker 4: me feel really good. And by the way, shout out
- 49:11Speaker 4: to Cam Rising.
- 49:13Speaker 2: That was.
- 49:14Speaker 6: Those two seasons, but that 2022 season, that game in particular.
- 49:20Speaker 6: cemented his legend for me as a, as a Utah
- 49:24Speaker 6: football all time.
- 49:24Speaker 5: Great.
- 49:25Speaker 2: Shout out to you.
- 49:25Speaker 4: Cam Carter also says the biggest win for me was
- 49:30Speaker 4: number 19, Utah beating ranked USC 24, 24 on that
- 49:34Speaker 4: on 21 of that last drive of the game. First
- 49:37Speaker 4: time I ever stormed the field. Also the first time
- 49:39Speaker 4: beating USC in that PAC 12 year.
- 49:43Speaker 2: Good stuff.
- 49:45Speaker 4: Sugar bowl versus Alabama proved Utah was not a flash
- 49:48Speaker 4: in the pan. National TV, national respect, NFL contracts for
- 49:51Speaker 4: many fans, scouts, agents, and media all took notes since
- 49:55Speaker 4: that game, more scouts than ever watch Utah on game day.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Not just preseason favorites in the early two thousands, you'd
- 50:03Speaker 4: see NFL reps from five or six teams. Now every
- 50:06Speaker 4: NFL team will have scouts in rice cycles for Utah
- 50:09Speaker 4: versus BYU prior to the Alabama win. That never happened.
- 50:13Speaker 4: I actually great text from David. I actually would, I'd
- 50:18Speaker 4: like to maybe like, maybe I could talk to director
- 50:24Speaker 4: of football operation. I wonder if they have a record
- 50:26Speaker 4: of like, NFL scout visits for games. I would like
- 50:32Speaker 4: to know if that was when it really started to
- 50:36Speaker 4: ramp up because obviously Utah had put a bunch of
- 50:40Speaker 4: great players into the NFL before 2008, but was that
- 50:44Speaker 4: when they started to be like, we're not just here
- 50:46Speaker 4: to watch one player. We're going to watch the entire
- 50:48Speaker 4: Utah team. It's a, it's a good text. I will
- 50:52Speaker 4: take a break. We got to double up. We'll come
- 50:54Speaker 4: back and we'll start our number two with a little
- 50:56Speaker 4: red and blue before we do that. A reminder to
- 50:59Speaker 4: all of you out there that, you know, little rain,
- 51:02Speaker 4: little sleet, then a bunch of snow. So maybe the
- 51:05Speaker 4: furnace kicked on last night to keep you in that
- 51:07Speaker 4: Goldilocks zone. And now you're going to have the air
- 51:10Speaker 4: conditioner on because the sun is out and heating up
- 51:12Speaker 4: your day. You need your home to be energy efficient
- 51:15Speaker 4: this time of year. It's great that you don't have
- 51:18Speaker 4: to worry as much about the air conditioner pumping all
- 51:22Speaker 4: day long or the furnace burning all day long. But
- 51:25Speaker 4: when you got both of them working at the same time,
- 51:27Speaker 4: It means you need an energy-efficient home. The best way
- 51:31Speaker 4: to increase the energy efficiency of your home is to
- 51:33Speaker 4: make sure that the holes in your home are sealed

- 52:47Speaker 2: Time to check in on the team down south.
- 52:49Speaker 5: They have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they're blue.

- 53:37Speaker 4: have a three-wheeled vehicle like Jerem Jordan does. I'm pretty
- 53:39Speaker 4: sure he drives a three-wheeled, one of those Can-Am Spider things.
- 53:43Speaker 2: He joins us now to talk a little BYU. Jerem Jordan, welcome.
- 53:46Speaker 2: How are you, sir?
- 53:46Speaker 5: I was thinking I would be on the motorcycle and
- 53:49Speaker 5: you'd be in like the little like car chair thing
- 53:52Speaker 5: on the side. Like you're rolling through downtown Salt Lake.
- 53:55Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 53:55Speaker 5: That'd be cool.
- 53:56Speaker 2: That'd be awesome.
- 53:57Speaker 5: I've never been in one of those.
- 53:59Speaker 2: As long as we have matching goggles, it'd be cool.
- 54:02Speaker 5: Oh yeah. Like aviators and the like leather old school
- 54:06Speaker 5: kind of helmet thing. Yeah. I can see that we're
- 54:08Speaker 5: rolling into like a mammoth game or something.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 54:12Speaker 4: Not too long before we get back to the mammoth,
- 54:14Speaker 4: by the way, it'll be fun to see.
- 54:15Speaker 5: Yeah, dude.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Less than two weeks now.
- 54:18Speaker 5: I love every Ryan Smith video, by the way, of
- 54:21Speaker 5: the renovated delt center. I'm like picking apart every frame layer.
- 54:24Speaker 5: I'm like, oh my gosh, it looks so good.
- 54:26Speaker 2: It's so cool. The ice is down.
- 54:28Speaker 4: Like they had that thing all right. They had that
- 54:30Speaker 4: thing gutted like a month ago. Now they're ready to
- 54:33Speaker 4: play hockey.
- 54:34Speaker 2: It's wild.
- 54:34Speaker 5: Let's go. Let's play that old timey hockey. And that
- 54:37Speaker 5: SNL sketch one stock talked about with a can't remember
- 54:41Speaker 5: which rapper, but it was really fun.
- 54:43Speaker 4: Before we get into talking about the 2026 BYU Cougars,
- 54:46Speaker 4: you and I are the same age, right? For you
- 54:50Speaker 4: and for your experience as a BYU fan, follower, supporter,
- 54:55Speaker 4: media member, whatever, what is the program defining victory for
- 55:00Speaker 4: Utah football, excuse me, for BYU football?
- 55:02Speaker 5: Speaker 2 I'll take for Utah football. What for BYU
- 55:06Speaker 5: program defining, you're saying like the best win ever essentially
- 55:10Speaker 5: program defining from BYU.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Speaker 0 But, but for you, right?
- 55:12Speaker 4: Because it's a national championship victory. Like you, you, you
- 55:16Speaker 4: don't know you weren't there. You didn't have a memory
- 55:19Speaker 4: of 1984.
- 55:19Speaker 5: Speaker 2 My parents went to the game and I
- 55:21Speaker 5: was one and they didn't take me. I could have
- 55:23Speaker 5: said I was there, but they left me at my
- 55:25Speaker 5: aunt and uncle's house. I'm serious. I'm mad about it
- 55:27Speaker 5: to this day. I would have been a nuisance to it.
- 55:30Speaker 2: You wouldn't have, you wouldn't have remembered anyway. Right.
- 55:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:33Speaker 4: I'm talking about like, like for you watching whatever happened
- 55:38Speaker 4: at BYU football and saying like, wow, that's who we
- 55:40Speaker 4: are right there.
- 55:43Speaker 5: That's a good question because there's sort of layers to
- 55:46Speaker 5: this with the modern era and more recently, and obviously,
- 55:50Speaker 5: you know, year four in the a big 12, you know,
- 55:53Speaker 5: is it a, is it like ending the streak against Utah?
- 55:56Speaker 5: That was a big moment for you. I didn't 21
- 55:58Speaker 5: the day after they got the big COVID invite. That
- 56:00Speaker 5: feels like a big one of like, all right, we're
- 56:02Speaker 5: here to play. Let's go. I buy also think about
- 56:06Speaker 5: like 2009 beating Oklahoma and Jerry's world on ABC and
- 56:09Speaker 5: the whole country seeing max on Dennis Pitt and those
- 56:13Speaker 5: guys get that win. There's been a bunch of good ones.
- 56:15Speaker 5: I'm hoping that it's Notre Dame this year. Like that's
- 56:18Speaker 5: the one I hope it is.
- 56:19Speaker 2: That would be a.
- 56:19Speaker 5: Really big That would be a huge one, given how
- 56:22Speaker 5: good Notre Dame is and where BYU is. I mean,
- 56:24Speaker 5: this is, this is assuming BYU takes care of business,
- 56:27Speaker 5: Notre Dame. Well, they don't play anybody before they play
- 56:30Speaker 5: BYU is this could be, you know, one of the
- 56:32Speaker 5: biggest matchups ever. There've never been a top 10 versus
- 56:35Speaker 5: top 10 game in Provo. That's never happened. It's only
- 56:38Speaker 5: happened once on the road. It was last year at
- 56:40Speaker 5: Texas tech. BYU didn't play well. So there's an opportunity here.
- 56:43Speaker 5: So I'd probably say 21 beating Utah and and kind
- 56:48Speaker 5: of what that meant in terms of the trajectory of like, oh,
- 56:50Speaker 5: we got the big 12 invite, like we're on equal
- 56:53Speaker 5: footing now. And the street cans, that was, that was
- 56:55Speaker 5: a big moment, certainly for BYU.
- 56:56Speaker 2: Speaker 3 0 5, 0 6, 0 7, 0 8.
- 56:56Speaker 5: Okay.
- 56:57Speaker 2: I think that one would appear on a lot of
- 56:58Speaker 2: BYU fans list.
- 57:00Speaker 4: Now, now let's talk about the now number nine ranked 20,
- 57:03Speaker 4: 26 BYU Cougars. Um, is, is there any kind of
- 57:08Speaker 4: imposter syndrome lingering for BYU in this fan base? Because, uh,
- 57:13Speaker 4: even a couple of weeks ago, I talked to a
- 57:15Speaker 4: guy who he's a professor at BYU. And when the,
- 57:19Speaker 4: it was like 13 at the time, he's like, are
- 57:20Speaker 4: we really the 13th best team in the country?
- 57:22Speaker 2: And I was like, dude, BYU is really good this year.
- 57:24Speaker 4: Uh, we don't know because the level of competition, while
- 57:29Speaker 4: it's been better for BYU than it has for some
- 57:31Speaker 4: other big 12 teams, including Utah, you've yet to face
- 57:34Speaker 4: the toughest tests, certainly. But is this a top 10
- 57:38Speaker 4: team in your mind and in the mind of the
- 57:41Speaker 4: collective BYU consciousness?
- 57:44Speaker 5: Yeah, I think they are based on who they were
- 57:47Speaker 5: at the end of the season last year, how many
- 57:48Speaker 5: people they returned and then how they've looked when the
- 57:51Speaker 5: starters are in. I don't think we need to worry about, well,
- 57:54Speaker 5: how the threes looked in the fourth quarter against CSU
- 57:56Speaker 5: is third string. Like it just doesn't, it's whatever the
- 57:59Speaker 5: pollsters didn't care. So why should we, I know fans
- 58:03Speaker 5: are really in a prosperity moment here. I'm like, it's
- 58:07Speaker 5: going to be all right, boys and girls. It's going
- 58:09Speaker 5: to be okay. Yeah, certainly they'll have a chance to
- 58:12Speaker 5: prove it, but when the ones are in, you always
- 58:16Speaker 5: looked really good and, and they'll have a chance to
- 58:19Speaker 5: prove it here in the next couple of weeks with
- 58:21Speaker 5: a TCU, Iowa state, you certainly expect to be ready
- 58:24Speaker 5: to win those games, but you know, be always tuned
- 58:26Speaker 5: for and for with historically have one there in 20 years,
- 58:29Speaker 5: but it's time to time to change that. And then
- 58:33Speaker 5: I would say it's looked a little better than we thought,
- 58:35Speaker 5: but they don't seem like a to show up. So
- 58:38Speaker 5: the BYU wins those and they're five and on, they
- 58:40Speaker 5: play six, no Notre Dame. That's a collision course for
- 58:42Speaker 5: an opportunity there. Now I'm not convinced that BYU needs
- 58:45Speaker 5: to win the game to make the playoff per se,
- 58:47Speaker 5: but if they show well, they compete really well. And
- 58:51Speaker 5: then they get to the big 12 title game and
- 58:54Speaker 5: you know, they win that they're going to be in
- 58:56Speaker 5: because power conference champs get out of bids. But also
- 58:59Speaker 5: if If BYU competes well with Notre Dame, let's say
- 59:01Speaker 5: they have one regular season loss. I don't know where
- 59:03Speaker 5: it comes, but the chances are high that BYU is
- 59:05Speaker 5: going to lose in the regular season at least once.
- 59:07Speaker 5: Come on. You know, maybe twice. I would kind of
- 59:10Speaker 5: one and a half to kind of the line there
- 59:11Speaker 5: for how good this team is right now, in my opinion,
- 59:13Speaker 5: then you go to the big 12 title game, you
- 59:15Speaker 5: compete well, and it's tight. You've got a way better
- 59:18Speaker 5: chance to be an at-large than you had the last
- 59:20Speaker 5: two years, because you've built up some credibility over now
- 59:23Speaker 5: three years going into the end of this year. And
- 59:26Speaker 5: you will have competed with Notre Dame who probably is
- 59:28Speaker 5: going to run the table in the regular season, maybe
- 59:29Speaker 5: 11 No, they were 11 and one in the regular season.
- 59:36Speaker 5: So I do believe they are a top 10 worthy
- 59:39Speaker 5: team right now. And I'm excited to watch them compete
- 59:42Speaker 5: every week. Cause they are, they are, they know they're good,
- 59:45Speaker 5: but they're not, they're not a team that is, you know,
- 59:49Speaker 5: anything but humble because of the two losses of Texas
- 59:52Speaker 5: tech last year. They're they, they know they have to
- 59:54Speaker 5: prove something at a higher level.
- 59:57Speaker 4: If BYU beats Notre Dame, but loses to Utah and
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: then misses the playoff. Is that, an acceptable outcome for
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: this team? Or would that be a failure in some
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: people's minds?
- 1:00:07Speaker 5: Speaker 3 I don't know if I see like that
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: scenario playing out in terms of like, if BYU beats
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: Notre Dame, they've got, they've they're on the end of
- 1:00:18Speaker 5: the playoff probably. Right. If let's say that plays out,
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: they go 11, one, they beat Notre Dame. They lose
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: to Utah. They're probably rematching with Utah on the pixel
- 1:00:27Speaker 5: side of it. And then if, you know, if they
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: win that they're in, if they lose that and it's competitive,
- 1:00:32Speaker 5: like how were those margins? We learned that last year,
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: like margins of management, uh, BYU was 12, no against everybody,
- 1:00:38Speaker 5: not named Texas tech last year. So that'd be interesting.
- 1:00:41Speaker 5: But I think in Notre Dame when would carry a
- 1:00:44Speaker 5: lot with the committee. Um, so it's a huge opportunity.
- 1:00:48Speaker 5: I've said it before with you and others, like this was.
- 1:00:57Speaker 5: on trouble. Like, are you kidding me next year? BYU host,
- 1:00:59Speaker 5: Texas tech, and they play at Notre Dame. So that's good.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: It's going to be gnarly too. .
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Once
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: you get into big 12 play in earnest, I don't
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: expect it to be almost 200 yards every single game
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: or 11 plus yards per carry. But it felt like
- 1:01:29Speaker 4: this was, you know, the game that reminded everyone exactly
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: what that guy is.
- 1:01:35Speaker 5: And that's what they needed in that game, right? Against Arizona,
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: you know, bear Bachmeier did a good job through the air.
- 1:01:40Speaker 5: That's what I think BYU is pretty chameleon in a
- 1:01:43Speaker 5: good way. Like what does this game require? And it
- 1:01:46Speaker 5: was a dominant run game. Barry Bachmeier didn't throw a
- 1:01:48Speaker 5: touchdown pass. Could he have thrown five if they knew that? Yes,
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: but it was LG on the ground and journey Tonga
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: came in and had 10 spring guy. And he's been
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: a revelation as well. And in kind of those reps
- 1:02:04Speaker 5: where they know BYU is going to run and he's
- 1:02:06Speaker 5: still had success when they were up 38, seven, you know,
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: late in the third or whatever. So LJ is the
- 1:02:11Speaker 5: real deal, man. Like he's the top five running back
- 1:02:13Speaker 5: in college football. I can see an argument for the
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: best college. running back right now. Like that BYU O
- 1:02:18Speaker 5: line is really good. Pocky Fino has been tremendous at
- 1:02:20Speaker 5: left tackle. And then BYU, you know, they, Kyle's far
- 1:02:25Speaker 5: choke was out for that game. They're hoping to have
- 1:02:27Speaker 5: them back against TCU, but Trevor also stepped in, did
- 1:02:29Speaker 5: a nice job. It was got good tight ends and
- 1:02:32Speaker 5: receivers that blocked downfield. I think that's been a strength
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: of BYU's kind of skill positions there is they, they
- 1:02:37Speaker 5: give a crap in the run game, right? They're engaged downfield.
- 1:02:40Speaker 5: You saw three dudes running with LJ on that like
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: 56 yarder on the second play from scrimmage or was
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: it 65? Like that was, that was crazy. So yeah,
- 1:02:49Speaker 5: that's what BYU is built on when they play action
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: deep and legend Glasgow has been awesome. And yeah, it's
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: fun to see this BYU team more explosive than last year.
- 1:02:59Speaker 4: They have not been running bear Bachmeier very much. Bear
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: Bachmeier has been a pocket passer. Is this indicative these
- 1:03:05Speaker 4: first three games indicative of what you, expect the game
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: plan to be with him and his legs for the
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: course of the season? Or are they just kind of
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: like keeping that in the back pocket? Because we know
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: what it looks like when he decides to get loose
- 1:03:20Speaker 4: and we know he's capable of producing big numbers with
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: his legs and timely numbers, maybe more importantly with his legs,
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: but he kind of hasn't had to, and they haven't
- 1:03:30Speaker 4: designed that into the offense yet.
- 1:03:33Speaker 5: Yeah, that's exactly right. I think it's in the bag.
- 1:03:35Speaker 5: It's sitting there if they need it. He's still five
- 1:03:37Speaker 5: yards of carry with sacks, even though he's only been
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: sacked twice.
- 1:03:40Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:03:41Speaker 5: I don't think they need it, which is great. And
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: it's with out Sione mall is probably out till mid
- 1:03:45Speaker 5: to late October at the earliest. So that's been nice.
- 1:03:48Speaker 5: Cause you know, that bear is going to be effective
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: with his legs. He did have a rushing touchdown in
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: each of the first two games. Uh, B always been
- 1:03:55Speaker 5: money in the red zone, Sean, like they had one
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: meal down against Arizona, which shouldn't really count. Then they
- 1:04:01Speaker 5: threw a pet pick last week. Others scoring touchdowns. Like
- 1:04:05Speaker 5: they scored on their first 13 red zone possessions touchdowns.
- 1:04:10Speaker 5: So that's, that's domination, which is great. They'll they'll use
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: bear when they need it in the run game. They
- 1:04:15Speaker 5: just have so many options this year. It's like offensively,
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: I feel like this team is even better than we
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: thought it would be, which is great. And no one's
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: talked about, Oh, they missed chase and Parker. Like, which
- 1:04:25Speaker 5: is crazy. Those are two good players. You always been
- 1:04:28Speaker 5: really explosive all over the place.
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: I'm glad you mentioned the kneel down against Arizona. There
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: were a small contingent, at least, of BYU fans on
- 1:04:38Speaker 4: social media who were like, what are we doing? You
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: got style points matter and you got to run this
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: thing up. And we talked about this a little bit.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Brent Brennan and Kalani are friends. And so they're not
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: going to do that. But like this is. this is
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: who Kalani Satake is, right? Is, is there, is there
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: a real thought that that could potentially be detrimental to
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: this team in any way?
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: He's not going to do it against Arizona.
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: He's also not going to do it against Colorado state.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Like he's just, it's just not that he's not going
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: to Dan Lanning his way against Portland state throwing passes
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: with 30 seconds left when you're already up 77, you know, like,
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: is there a real thought that this could be to
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: the detriment of BYU in any way?
- 1:05:23Speaker 5: I don't think so because the AP poll has not
- 1:05:26Speaker 5: shown that, you know, BYU climbed four after the Arizona
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: win BYU climbed, you know, two last week. Some of
- 1:05:33Speaker 5: that is product of who's what's happening in front of you,
- 1:05:35Speaker 5: but it's also respect for who you are. I there's
- 1:05:38Speaker 5: also a game but which kind of eliminates any of that,
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: you know, statistically where you can go, Oh, be always
- 1:05:44Speaker 5: 22nd game control. They were 53rd. And then last week
- 1:05:47Speaker 5: they became 22nd after the CSU game. So if you're
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: looking at the actual numbers, people know, but that playoff
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: committee is going to dig in. They're going to know like, Nope,
- 1:05:55Speaker 5: they nailed it out in these games or whatever. It's also,
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: we're going to have so many more data points. So
- 1:05:59Speaker 5: I don't think So also Kalani had said a couple
- 1:06:02Speaker 5: of things that make sense to me with this. One
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: is he said, I'm not going to jeopardize my starters.
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: Like why would I bear an LJ and these guys
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: they're healthy. There's some guys that are a little banged up.
- 1:06:12Speaker 5: So that makes sense to me. And then the other
- 1:06:14Speaker 5: is Blonnie knows where he is. He's at BYU where
- 1:06:18Speaker 5: they are going to do things a little differently. And
- 1:06:21Speaker 5: if people don't understand that he and BYU, I don't
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: think care. Like he is a certain kind of person
- 1:06:27Speaker 5: who is fully aligned with what the school is. And
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: this actually aligns with the bigger mission. So I'm, I'm
- 1:06:33Speaker 5: on board. It doesn't affect BYU in the polls. It's
- 1:06:35Speaker 5: not going to affect BYU with the college football playoff
- 1:06:38Speaker 5: committee because they know ball and not just looking at
- 1:06:41Speaker 5: a score and sending an email to vote in a
- 1:06:44Speaker 5: poll or something like that. I think Kalani gets it.
- 1:06:49Speaker 5: Like there's not a soul on earth that doesn't respect
- 1:06:51Speaker 5: that man.
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: Jerem Jordan here on red and blue on the Sean
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: O'Connell show. This segment is brought to you by friends
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: at Murdoch Ford Santa Quinn. All right, so this BYU
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: football team heads into Big 12 conference play now in earnest.
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: They already have had one Big 12 game, which gives
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: them one more than most teams in the conference. On
- 1:07:14Speaker 4: the road at TCU, this is, I think, at least
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: a good TCU team. I don't know if we're aware
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: that they're great or anything close to that TCU team
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: so far. They beat Grambling and Arkansas State convincingly. They
- 1:07:27Speaker 4: lost a close one to North Carolina for people. They
- 1:07:30Speaker 4: don't have it in front of them. And, you know,
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: this is a BYU team that, like you said, looks
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: really good and is firing on all cylinders now. So
- 1:07:40Speaker 4: the next time out will be in a couple of
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: weeks for BYU. Is TCU a threat?
- 1:07:50Speaker 5: I think everybody in the league is. I don't think
- 1:07:53Speaker 5: anybody's so good they can just chill. So TCU is
- 1:07:56Speaker 5: interesting because, yeah, they have dominated the last two weeks.
- 1:07:59Speaker 5: they've been out without Jordan Dwyer, their top receiver. He
- 1:08:02Speaker 5: comes back this week. So that's notable. Jane Craig's played
- 1:08:05Speaker 5: much better. Obviously the competition was worse last two weeks.
- 1:08:07Speaker 5: He did not play well in the rain in Dublin
- 1:08:10Speaker 5: against UNC shout out to build Bella chicks sweatshirt. But
- 1:08:14Speaker 5: Ed small has looked good at receiver. You know, Jeremy
- 1:08:17Speaker 5: Payne has looked good at running back like they're a threat.
- 1:08:20Speaker 5: You're going to show up. And then you just kind
- 1:08:21Speaker 5: of look at history, which sometimes has nothing to do
- 1:08:23Speaker 5: with the game, but BYU's only won twice there, two
- 1:08:26Speaker 5: and four. Haven't won since 06 there. Haven't played a
- 1:08:28Speaker 5: ton of games. Got punked a couple of years ago
- 1:08:32Speaker 5: in 23 by 33 points, but BYU did the punking
- 1:08:34Speaker 5: last year by 31. So yeah, this is an important
- 1:08:38Speaker 5: game next week. BYU should get a little healthier and
- 1:08:40Speaker 5: then certainly be motivated to play TCU in game two.
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: And when the stakes are so high and the margins
- 1:08:47Speaker 5: are so thinned, Like BYU wants to be in the
- 1:08:50Speaker 5: big 12 title game, make the college football playoff. They
- 1:08:52Speaker 5: are dialed in. Like they are not taking anything for
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: granted or nothing's easy. Like it's just, it's a team
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: that's really focused and I'm excited to watch it. every
- 1:09:00Speaker 5: single snap, including a big game next week. It's almost
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: a bummer that BYU is not playing this week. Like they're,
- 1:09:05Speaker 5: they're just so focused and dialed in that it's fun
- 1:09:09Speaker 5: to watch them play. I'm going to miss them.
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Not watching.
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: I'm not playing this week, but we have six ranked
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: on ranked matchups this week. Like I, I, I'm excited
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: for this weekend.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: I actually, if I'm BYU, I hate that this is
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: where my bi-week fell. And I know that coaches don't,
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: they don't complain about schedules because you just take what
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: you get. But I, I hate that I'm having a
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: bi-week after three very easily won games effectively. And it
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: interrupts a little bit momentum, but then it also sets
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: you up for just this crazy stretch run for the
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: rest of the season.
- 1:09:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it's going to be nine weeks of brutality. I mean,
- 1:09:48Speaker 5: next year is going to be nice where they kind
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: of move the schedule up into August, and then you
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: have two bye weeks. I think that's great. Kind of
- 1:09:54Speaker 5: more NFL-ish where it's like, all right, we know that
- 1:09:56Speaker 5: this is tough physically. Let's get you guys as healthy
- 1:09:58Speaker 5: as possible. So, yeah, it's going to be fun, man.
- 1:10:01Speaker 5: I'm stoked to watch it. I'm stoked to watch the
- 1:10:03Speaker 5: Big 12 games this weekend. Like the Oklahoma State-West Virginia
- 1:10:07Speaker 5: game is like, wait, which one of you is actually–
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: more legit than the other. And in the big 12,
- 1:10:11Speaker 5: there's some interesting games. Reece Davis has been, he's had
- 1:10:16Speaker 5: a cool comment where he didn't talk about the depth
- 1:10:18Speaker 5: of the league. He said, I think it's wide. I
- 1:10:19Speaker 5: think that's an accurate description kind of visually. Like, are
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: there a bunch of top end teams? There's three in
- 1:10:24Speaker 5: the top 15 right now. Like, I think, yes, let's
- 1:10:27Speaker 5: hope there's two playoff teams. I think that'd be great.
- 1:10:30Speaker 5: But yeah, it's, it's a league that there's not a
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: ton of just gimmies in the league, which is, which
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: is kind of nice.
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: We had a great Houston versus Texas tech Friday night game.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: I'm sure you watched at least as much as you could.
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: It came down.
- 1:10:44Speaker 4: To literally the final inches Wegman trying to get in.
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: Did we learn anything important about both teams?
- 1:10:53Speaker 5: Houston's really good too. That Texas tech is still figuring
- 1:10:57Speaker 5: out how to win, even though their defense is not
- 1:10:59Speaker 5: as dominant as it was last year. And they throw
- 1:11:01Speaker 5: the pick, they go down, you know, what are they
- 1:11:03Speaker 5: trying to run? We'll hand it out of town. Like,
- 1:11:06Speaker 5: I don't understand though. I understand why they brought in stores.
- 1:11:09Speaker 5: B that didn't work out. Hammond's the guy he said,
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: he said some comments like, yeah, I thought that was weird.
- 1:11:15Speaker 5: throw Castellanos in on the first plane. He throws a pick.
- 1:11:18Speaker 5: I'm like, are you guys trying to get well, having
- 1:11:20Speaker 5: to transfer? Like, I don't understand how they're kind of
- 1:11:22Speaker 5: handling will, or they think they can just do better.
- 1:11:25Speaker 5: I don't, I don't get it. I don't know, but that's,
- 1:11:28Speaker 5: that's good. I, I think the third best team in
- 1:11:30Speaker 5: the league right now. And I still think they they're
- 1:11:33Speaker 5: deserving of like a top 15, top 20 ranking. There's
- 1:11:36Speaker 5: three good teams in the league. Like they stick out.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: It's going to be a fun race to see which
- 1:11:40Speaker 5: to actually make it to Arlington with the BYU time
- 1:11:43Speaker 5: and Texas tech. So they, yeah, tech tech offended. It's
- 1:11:46Speaker 5: them against the world.
- 1:11:47Speaker 7: Well, yeah.
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: When you handle swords being that way, it's going to
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: be like that. And they don't, they don't really play any,
- 1:11:53Speaker 5: they don't play a tough schedule. So I think tech's
- 1:11:56Speaker 5: got a good chance to be in Arlington and, but
- 1:11:58Speaker 5: I would love for BYU and Utah to be stuck too.
- 1:12:00Speaker 5: I think that would be amazing.
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: Speaker 0 5th, no sacks for BYU against Colorado state.
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: Is that okay?
- 1:12:05Speaker 5: Speaker 4 5th, I think so. You know, you love
- 1:12:09Speaker 5: in a game where you're up big, that you rack
- 1:12:12Speaker 5: up a couple, but again, the starters weren't there much
- 1:12:15Speaker 5: and they were kind of making hot painting, beat them
- 1:12:18Speaker 5: through the air and then hot and just in hamstring
- 1:12:20Speaker 5: and the backups in and you know, he's scrambling a
- 1:12:22Speaker 5: little bit. And so, yeah, it, you'd love a few,
- 1:12:25Speaker 5: but Kelly ping has said, sacks might be the most
- 1:12:28Speaker 5: overrated defensive statistic in his opinion yet. Keanu, a ton
- 1:12:32Speaker 5: of us in, in ball camp said, Hey, we want
- 1:12:34Speaker 5: 50 sacks. Like, dude, that would be awesome. I, I
- 1:12:37Speaker 5: love that you said 50, but no, Speaker 3 1.
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: I asked that question because you know, I'm nitpicking on
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: everything we've seen from Utah so far. And it's like, sure.
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: You know, you want you want that. You want to
- 1:12:51Speaker 4: be able to, to paint a complete picture. I think
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: with BYU, it's pretty clear. They're going to be able
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: to run the ball effectively. They're going to be able
- 1:12:57Speaker 4: to pass the ball effectively.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:13:00Speaker 4: I liked the DeVries kid in the return game. I
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: think that's a, that's kind of a fun revelation. If
- 1:13:04Speaker 4: you're a BYU fan and I'm looking at this, the
- 1:13:07Speaker 4: defense and I'm saying, all right, yeah, you got all
- 1:13:09Speaker 4: these fast guys running around. Oh, there's something I can
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: say like Akana, why didn't you have another two and
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: a half sacks?
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: What's going on here? It just feels like a.
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: Weird goose egg in a game that was otherwise dominant
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: for BYU.
- 1:13:23Speaker 5: Yeah. And it's, it's all good. Like, frankly, it's just like,
- 1:13:27Speaker 5: let's just be as healthy as possible and move along
- 1:13:31Speaker 5: with their lives. Like BYU was minus one in margin,
- 1:13:33Speaker 5: you know, CSUs, they came in as the number one
- 1:13:36Speaker 5: takeaway team in the country. They got to want one
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: pick from bear one pick from Jason Borgana tip. So
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: it's all good, man. You know, if it was minus
- 1:13:45Speaker 5: three or four, then maybe it would have been a game,
- 1:13:47Speaker 5: but He's not going to turn it over that much typically.
- 1:13:49Speaker 5: So yeah, we're, we're picking nits for sure. As Bill
- 1:13:52Speaker 5: Simmons says to see what can they do better? We
- 1:13:56Speaker 5: even talked about that today on BYU sports nation. It's like,
- 1:13:58Speaker 5: things are going pretty great. Let's be honest.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: So with a no BYU game to watch to work
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: this weekend, you mentioned it's a great college football slate.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: What is the, what is the game plan for Jerem
- 1:14:10Speaker 4: Jordan on Saturday?
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: Well, first off, my daughter has a Utah Kendrick volleyball
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: playoff game. I am the coach, and so that's the
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: first order of business. The second is my 8-year-old son
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: has a tackle football game in the middle of the day.
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: That is the second order of business. And then there
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: are other matchups of interest. And if you're BYU and, frankly, Utah...
- 1:14:32Speaker 5: you're keeping an eye on a couple of games where
- 1:14:34Speaker 5: you could either get leaps or move up a little bit.
- 1:14:38Speaker 5: You know, one of those is like, can, if LSU loses,
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: they get out to a and M that's the battle
- 1:14:43Speaker 5: of teams that lost last week. Does LSU slide out.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: Of the way?
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: Does Utah move up? Does, does be right. Kind of
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: hold its spot. If LSU B tech same MLSU my
- 1:14:51Speaker 5: past BYU, USC, Oregon's interesting as well. USC could move
- 1:14:56Speaker 5: up only like kind of four and O team in
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: the mix who played week zero that's ranked like that.
- 1:15:00Speaker 5: I think so.
- 1:15:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: You keep an eye on a few of these games
- 1:15:03Speaker 5: and then just from an entertainment value, just nice relaxing day,
- 1:15:06Speaker 5: you know, maybe do the yard work then maybe Sunday.
- 1:15:08Speaker 5: I'm not sure, but it's, it's nice to have a bi-week.
- 1:15:11Speaker 5: I don't have another game. I'm calling Sean. I call
- 1:15:13Speaker 5: volleyball and sometimes soccer. I don't have any of those
- 1:15:16Speaker 5: this week. So it's, it's a night, you know, it's
- 1:15:18Speaker 5: a bi-week I'm enjoying it. Probably should have gone out
- 1:15:20Speaker 5: of town somewhere, but we got kids sporting events, man.
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: Plus I got to get that sidecar from somebody that
- 1:15:26Speaker 5: roll around in this weekend, you know, the Canyon or something.
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: We're going to go take it in the leaves up
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: the canyons, a little alpine loop maybe?
- 1:15:36Speaker 5: Yeah, I do miss starting canyon in the fall, going
- 1:15:40Speaker 5: up for like a BYU-Utah State game and just how
- 1:15:43Speaker 5: pretty the leaves were there. But Utah's awesome, man. I
- 1:15:45Speaker 5: love living here. It's so pretty.
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: 31-7 victory for your Seahawks over the Cardinals. And any
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: significant takeaways from that for you?
- 1:15:57Speaker 5: We are not the chargers. That's what I already knew,
- 1:16:00Speaker 5: but yeah. Holy crap. The chargers stink. And the Raiders
- 1:16:03Speaker 5: are two and oh, and yeah, the Rams are back.
- 1:16:06Speaker 5: Bummer with Jackson dart last night, by the way, hilarious
- 1:16:09Speaker 5: memes with Caleb Williams and the bears. You never like
- 1:16:12Speaker 5: to see a guy get injured, but pretty funny commentary
- 1:16:16Speaker 5: on that video. All of Paul Pierce, which years later,
- 1:16:19Speaker 5: he said he had to go to the bathroom. Not,
- 1:16:21Speaker 5: not an injury, which is like, wait, what? You just
- 1:16:23Speaker 5: ruined one of the greatest moments of all time.
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:16:25Speaker 5: So you're actually looking good. And it's the West is
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: going to be as brutal as we thought, but, and
- 1:16:30Speaker 5: Niners looks great. I mean, man, the dolphins are bad,
- 1:16:32Speaker 5: but when the Niners are healthy, scary, like as scary
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: or scarier than the ramps, because right now it's like
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: what Sam, Donald's going to come back next week, apparently,
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: or this week, sorry, against the commanders. No, Jane Daniels.
- 1:16:46Speaker 5: So it shouldn't be as difficult. We'll see, man. It's a,
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: the NFL and full swing college football. I'm loving my life. My,
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: my happiness levels at like a thousand. So let's go.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: Well, let's keep it there. Jerem, always appreciate your time.
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: Thanks for hopping on again today.
- 1:17:01Speaker 5: Thanks, Sean.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: That's Jerem Jordan.
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: Red and blue brought to you by our friends at
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: Murdoch Ford, Santa Quinn, 95 West summit Ridge parkway. Great
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: deals right now on cars, trucks, and SUVs. And if
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: you're looking for a new set of tires, buy three,
- 1:17:19Speaker 4: get one for a dollar. That offer goes for another
- 1:17:23Speaker 4: eight days. So get down there to Santa Quinn. It's
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: worth some big tire savings.
- 1:17:30Speaker 6: Another thing to be excited about, if you're Jerem Jordan,
- 1:17:33Speaker 6: he partially got on the screen at the Weezer concert
- 1:17:37Speaker 6: last Tuesday.
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Is that true?
- 1:17:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: You should have told me that before. I know you're right.
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: So then I could have asked him about it.
- 1:17:44Speaker 6: So that's, I mean, his happiness, he says happiness level
- 1:17:47Speaker 6: is at a thousand. So what he mentioned is probably
- 1:17:50Speaker 6: like seven 50 of that thousand. The other two 50
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: is he got, his face was on the screen. It
- 1:17:57Speaker 6: part of his face. Anyway, it was on the screen
- 1:17:59Speaker 6: at the Weezer concert.
- 1:18:00Speaker 5: So.
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: Daily dump comes up next. We got a potpourri of stories,
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: including a man. Even if you're a major league baseball player,

- 1:18:27Speaker 9: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:18:30Speaker 9: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number

- 1:19:18Speaker 2: I can't believe I'm talking U.S.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: Men's national team soccer twice in one week when we've
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: got football season in full swing, but that's what the
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: Daily Dump is kind of about. So Mauricio Pochettino has
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: now doubled down on his snub of previous players American
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: soccer captain, Christian Pulisic, this we've got a world cup
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: in four years, right? And in this cycle of international play,
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: Pochettino says it's about development.
- 1:19:47Speaker 2: It's about getting these fresh faces going.
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: I'm sure he and Pulisic have had a conversation or two,
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: but I told you that Pulisic was left off the roster.
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: Ricardo Pepe was put on the roster.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Pepe can now no longer participate because he's got an injury.
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: So All right, there's a spot for Pulisic. And still,
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: Pochettino said, nope, we're not bringing him in. Interestingly enough,
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: on the same day, Pulisic broke a 21-match goalless streak
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: for his club team, AC Milan. So maybe he's motivated
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: by this. And maybe that's what Pochettino is trying to do.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: Maybe a little chess and checkers going on here at
- 1:20:30Speaker 4: the top of things in the U.S.
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: Men's national team for soccer.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: We are.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Just under four years away from us winning the world cup, baby.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Let's go. We're believers, right? USA. No, nobody out there.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: That's fine.
- 1:20:46Speaker 4: Did you see what happened to Alex Bregman standing in the,
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: standing in the warmup circle?
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:54Speaker 6: Dangerous spot to be in. Apparently the warmup circle. So
- 1:20:59Speaker 6: next circle he's on deck.
- 1:21:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: Foul ball off the face.
- 1:21:06Speaker 4: 9-1 victory for the Cubs over the Reds. But Bregman
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: is standing there in the on-deck circle. Left-handed batter is
- 1:21:18Speaker 4: up to bat, right? So the way that the home-and-away
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: dugouts are situated, you're more likely to take something off
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: the end of a left-hander's bat, standing on, if you're viewing,
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: if you're behind home plate, if you're the catcher, right?
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: left side where Bregman is in the warmup circle in
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: the on deck, getting a couple of swings, little weight
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: on the wooden bat.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: You guys know how it looks.
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: And, uh, Michael Bush check swing fouls off a pitch
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: right into Alex Bregman's face. Uh, to his credit, he
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: did not get, he did not roll around on the
- 1:21:59Speaker 4: ground and cry. Uh, he got hit in his left
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: cheekbone under his eye, bled from his nose just a
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: little bit but uh his eyes swelled shut he's he's
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: messed up man it's uh i look i i fought
- 1:22:15Speaker 4: for a living i got punched in the face innumerable
- 1:22:19Speaker 4: amount of times i got elbowed in the face several
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: times the worst black eye that i ever had was
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: actually from a baseball And it happened at a baseball practice,
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: weirdly enough. And I had some bad black eyes from fighting,
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: but the worst one I ever had was my freshman
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: year of high school.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: It was a play at the plate. My mask is off.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: All right.
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: Throw from center field, relay to the second baseman. He
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: throws it. And there was a, you know, the sprinkler boxes,
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: the in-ground sprinkler blocks, the little little plastic, the green
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: plastic PVC kind of thing. There was one of those
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: right in front of the dirt that was in front
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: of home plate.
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: For some reason, the ball skipped off that thing and
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: took a weird angle right into my eye, just like
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: bam on the cutoff throw and it hurt.
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: And you know, runner safe at home. And my eye.
- 1:23:26Speaker 6: That's what hurt the most, is that the run scored, right?
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: My eye swelled shut with the quickness.
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: It was.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: I could... Wow. It was like watching a window shade close.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: I could see the swelling just... Oh, my gosh.
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: And my eye swelled all the way shut and was
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: shut for, like, a week. So you didn't play the
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: rest of the game?
- 1:23:47Speaker 2: I did not. It took you out? It was not
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: a good day.
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: My.
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: The black-eyed story that I have is because I was
- 1:23:56Speaker 6: probably in elementary school, and we had a plastic sword
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: that got stuck in our basketball net, and my idiot
- 1:24:05Speaker 6: neighbor decided. Sorry, you said a plastic sword? Yeah, you know,
- 1:24:09Speaker 6: a little knight plastic sword. My idiot neighbor decided, let's
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: throw a roller blade up there to get it loose.
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: Roller blade hit. The brake part hit me in the eye. Uh,
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: rollerblades are, they're hefty.
- 1:24:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:24Speaker 6: And we're in elementary school. So like we're, that's hefty
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: for us. And I remember seeing it coming towards my
- 1:24:33Speaker 6: face and then I ended up with the black guy.
- 1:24:35Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: That sucks. That's a not, I mean, arguably as cool
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: as your black guy's story.
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: However, um, I am tougher than Alex Bregman because my
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: bones didn't break his, his broke.
- 1:24:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: So drink more milk, Alex Bregman.
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: That's a, that's a tough deal, man.
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: I don't know what the, I haven't paid any attention
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: to what the Cubs postseason outlook is like.
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: They're, they're going to be a wild card team.
- 1:25:03Speaker 5: Good.
- 1:25:04Speaker 6: I think a decent chance. It went in a series,
- 1:25:06Speaker 6: maybe making a world series run.
- 1:25:07Speaker 4: Can I tell you what the worst part of having
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: a bad black eye like this is? It's actually not
- 1:25:12Speaker 4: the swelling, the facial swelling. Although I haven't had facial
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: fractures like this.
- 1:25:17Speaker 2: I've broken my nose, but no like orbital or cheekbone
- 1:25:19Speaker 2: or anything. Bregman's. Suffering some stuff right now.
- 1:25:23Speaker 4: The worst part of a bad black eye like this
- 1:25:25Speaker 4: one is not the black eye itself. Because those heal,
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: you know, a couple of weeks and you're probably fine.
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: Rub some olive oil on it and it speeds up
- 1:25:37Speaker 4: that healing process. The worst part is the bloody eye
- 1:25:41Speaker 4: that you have. You have that redness in the white
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: of your eye from the broken blood vessels of the
- 1:25:48Speaker 4: eyeball itself. And those things or the swelling from around
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: the eye socket, whatever, like falls in. And you have
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: that scary horror movie red eye.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: For like a month. And people. So you have to
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: have that conversation.
- 1:26:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: For four to six weeks.
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: Looks like.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Oh, what happened to your eye? Your eye looks like Sauron. Yeah.
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: Could you shut up? I don't want to talk about it.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: I talked about it when I had the black eye,
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: the periorbital hematoma, when I had black and blue and
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: then it faded kind of yellow and green.
- 1:26:21Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: I already got the conversation out. And then that bloody eye,
- 1:26:24Speaker 4: which looks way scarier and grosser, that lasts much longer
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: for some reason.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: And now I'm upset that we brought it up. Not good.
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: Not good. This is a wild one. The Clippers.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: have named a longtime season ticket holder and longtime friend
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: of Steve Ballmer, a prominent L.A.
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: Trial lawyer. His name is John Gibson.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: He is their interim governor, while Ballmer and Gillian Zucker
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: each serve a year-long suspension.
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: This is so great. Yeah, so this is it.
- 1:27:02Speaker 6: The reason why Gillian Zucker is important to mention here
- 1:27:05Speaker 6: is she probably would have been named... interim governor if
- 1:27:10Speaker 6: she wasn't so heavily involved in the salary cap circumvention
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: scheme and thus suspended. And so they had to... They
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: do have a minority owner, O.C. His name's Dennis Wong. Now,
- 1:27:25Speaker 6: here's the thing about him. He's not named in Wachtell
- 1:27:27Speaker 6: Lipton's report that then led to the suspensions of Balmer
- 1:27:33Speaker 6: and the fine and the draft picks being taken away, right?
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: He's not named in there, but.
- 1:27:38Speaker 6: Pablo Torre on his podcast has documentation that shows him
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: becoming an investor in Aspiration when Aspiration was in default
- 1:27:49Speaker 6: and when they just like within days of when they
- 1:27:52Speaker 6: were just so happen to be late paying Kawhi Leonard
- 1:27:55Speaker 6: for his quote unquote endorsement deal. One of one of
- 1:27:59Speaker 6: the payments he paid, he invested just more than what
- 1:28:03Speaker 6: they owed Kawhi Leonard at that time at not.
- 1:28:08Speaker 2: Not in the NBA discipline.
- 1:28:11Speaker 6: Interesting because no NBA discipline that he would not be
- 1:28:14Speaker 6: the one that they would turn to, but it's probably because, hey, dude,
- 1:28:17Speaker 6: we didn't punish you, but that doesn't mean we want
- 1:28:20Speaker 6: you involved at all either because you clearly were involved
- 1:28:23Speaker 6: in this too.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: Just a very curious thing there.
- 1:28:27Speaker 4: So John Gibson is now the governor and chief executive officer.
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: And I'm looking at the official Clippers, like, front office website.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: Here's my problem, right? If I am Eric Chan, Alex Diaz,
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: Dick Parsons, if I'm Denise booth, these are all people
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: who are already in the Clippers front office. And you
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: bring in some random guy who, to make everyone else's boss,
- 1:28:58Speaker 4: I would be absolutely furious.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: Now I think the reason you do that right.
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: Is because you probably don't want to promote someone under
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: these circumstances from their current position and then demote them again.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: When everyone who's under suspension comes back, that gets a
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: little bit ugly.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: That gets a little bit messy, but still.
- 1:29:21Speaker 4: If I'm the person, if I'm the, the Dick Parsons
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: Or if I'm the, you know, even the, let's see,
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: there's a guy named Kyle Burkhart, okay?
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: Director of Strategy and Insights.
- 1:29:34Speaker 4: If I'm Kyle Burkhart, I'm saying, hey guys, even if,
- 1:29:40Speaker 4: you're going to get rid of me after this. Even
- 1:29:43Speaker 4: if you're going to put me back to my old position,
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: will you let me do this for the one year?
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: Put that on my resume. That's going to look really good.
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: They're like, Nope, we got a long time season ticket holder.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: Who's just going to do whatever I say. He is
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: now the official holder of this position.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: And he's, he's a lawyer.
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: So things are not, we're not going to do any fish,
- 1:30:05Speaker 6: anything fishy with him in charge.
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: Cause he knows the law.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: I don't, It's an interesting guy they decided to appoint.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: Ouch.
- 1:30:16Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: I think it's all but guaranteed.
- 1:30:20Speaker 6: We talked about months ago who are the teams that
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: the Jazz have to unseat in the playoff picture, play-in picture.
- 1:30:28Speaker 6: Clippers have been in the play-in the last few years,
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: last year included. I think it's pretty safe to say
- 1:30:34Speaker 6: the Jazz don't have to worry about the Clippers.
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: I think they'll be better than them. this year. 61 50.
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: After hearing the, the story of my black eye from
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: Jordan high baseball as a freshman, who was the catching
- 1:30:50Speaker 4: coach with the mass you were able to use should
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: have been taught to keep the mask on.
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: I don't know how old you think I am.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: We did not have the cool hockey goalie style masks
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: back in my day. You had the, just the cage
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: that covered your face.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: You had the two piece.
- 1:31:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: You had the hard cap.
- 1:31:07Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: And then you had the the mask that was held
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: on to that thing with elastic.
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: So as soon as you started moving, when there's like
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: a play in the field or when you're running down
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: to be the backup at first base or anything else,
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: that thing is not, you got to take the mask off, man.
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: When you're, when there's a pop-up and you got to
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: find it, you used to throw that mask off, right?
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: You still see catchers throw the mask off. It proves
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: your peripheral vision, baby.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: I think in the many, many years I've played catcher
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: and the probably hundreds of times I threw my mask
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: off to see that foul ball. I probably caught two
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: of them total in the history of my illustrious little
- 1:31:55Speaker 4: league baseball career.
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: So maybe you're right. Text her. Maybe I should have
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: kept that mask on. Cause I don't think it was
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: helping myself much. Did you see the picture that Tom
- 1:32:06Speaker 2: sent in?
- 1:32:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the one I, I, I saw on the
- 1:32:09Speaker 4: internet to Bregman, his face does not look good.
- 1:32:13Speaker 9: No.
- 1:32:13Speaker 6: And, and he's got a snarky message with it too.
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: Cubs scored more than the bears on Sunday.
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: Go bikes. He says, that's, that's a good one. It's
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: a good one, Tom.
- 1:32:23Speaker 4: By the way, the, the memeification of Caleb Williams being
- 1:32:28Speaker 4: carted off the field and his fist bump and his
- 1:32:30Speaker 4: tearful fist bump, it reached peak internet with some random guy.
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: I looked this up. He, I retweeted it. He captioned it.
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: He memed it.
- 1:32:42Speaker 4: And he, in the cleverest way possible, he said, me,
- 1:32:50Speaker 4: after sleeping on the uncomfortable hospital bed when my wife
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: just gave birth, you know, just like crying, fist bumping,
- 1:32:58Speaker 4: being wheeled off. And this man, he's got like about
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: a thousand followers on Twitter. He this tweet has 13
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: million views.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: Let's go accidental viral. Just like do it.
- 1:33:16Speaker 4: Me after sleeping on the comfortable couch at the hospital,
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: after my wife gives birth, Caleb Williams, fist bumping and
- 1:33:23Speaker 4: crying as he goes off the field.
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: Oh, it's absolutely fantastic. Good job. A simple Ryan on Twitter.
- 1:33:32Speaker 6: Speaker 3 I wonder how many of those follows have
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: come from one of the, from the 13 plus million
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: people that have liked his posts. I wonder how many
- 1:33:42Speaker 6: he had before this went viral.
- 1:33:43Speaker 4: I got to tell you the, the, I think simple
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: Ryan might be a bit strange.
- 1:33:49Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: Because he follows 183 people joined in December, 2019 follows
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: 183 people has 1036 followers, which is up about 40
- 1:33:59Speaker 4: from the last time I checked last night. It was
- 1:34:03Speaker 4: not gaining a bunch of followers from this. He's got
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: a weird little like cartoon avatar and Dwight Eisenhower as
- 1:34:11Speaker 4: like the big, like a headshot.
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: As the banner photo behind him. The banner photo is
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: Dwight Eisenhower. Right. We love Ike, I guess. I like Ike.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: What was the famous campaign thing? Whatever it was. So
- 1:34:25Speaker 2: there you go. Shout out. He also, this one did
- 1:34:31Speaker 2: not go as viral.
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: This.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: Okay. So he, he, he took two shots at this. Okay.
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: Caleb Williams video, fist pumping, thumbs up, crying as he's
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: wheeled off.
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: Everyone thinks it's a season ending injury. Psych.
- 1:34:45Speaker 4: It's a minor hamstring strain. And he's being dragged for
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: it as is appropriate. The first attempt at getting a
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: laugh out of this from simple Ryan was just woke
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: up with the top of my mouth burned from my pizza.
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: We've all had that before also. But the second one,
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: which was sent only minutes later, much better.
- 1:35:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:35:09Speaker 4: Sleeping on that uncomfortable couch at the hospital after your
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: wife gives birth. Which, by the way, is a crucible
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: that any of you non-fathers out there, you just fail
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: to understand.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: It really is. It's horrifically uncomfortable. I'm one of you now.
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: I know.
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: Weirdly, it's not even a... It's not even a real couch.
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: It's a fold-out large chair.
- 1:35:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:35:33Speaker 4: And because of the nature of the mechanic, the mechanism
- 1:35:36Speaker 4: in this fold-out chair, actually the foot of the chair
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: is up a little bit higher than the head, where
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: your head ends up being, which that sucks.
- 1:35:45Speaker 2: So you're sleeping, like, mildly upside down. Uh-uh. Not cool.
- 1:35:49Speaker 6: See, they had that in our hospital room. They also
- 1:35:53Speaker 6: had the, like, cheaply made... couch that you fold the
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: back down and it becomes flat and it's a bed.
- 1:36:03Speaker 6: That's what, that's what I slept on when, when my
- 1:36:06Speaker 6: boy was born, not much better than what you described,
- 1:36:10Speaker 6: but also tired enough that it didn't matter.
- 1:36:17Speaker 4: Justin just came in and criticized all of us who
- 1:36:20Speaker 4: are still on Twitter.
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: Okay. Hot take. I'll take people still using Twitter.
- 1:36:27Speaker 7: All right, man.
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 1:36:31Speaker 6: By the way, a simple Ryan going back to him, December, 2019,
- 1:36:34Speaker 6: he joined like right when COVID became a thing, December, 2019.
- 1:36:39Speaker 6: What a time to join Twitter.
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: Makes sense.
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: Honestly, that's your daily dump brought to you by friends
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: or a Valley plumbing, heating and cooling and excavation. They
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: really are willing to, and able to do it all
- 1:36:53Speaker 4: for you. Lots left to get to Jeff Schwartz joining
- 1:36:56Speaker 4: us in about 10 minutes. It's the Sean O'Connell show
- 1:36:59Speaker 4: on ESPN, 700 and 92 on FM.
- 1:37:02Speaker 7: It's a nice day for a white wedding.
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell show from a Murdoch
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: Hyundai studio of ESPN, 700 and 92, one FM.
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: You just heard the update on Jackson darts in the, well, the,
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: In the James Peterson ESPN SportsCenter update, here's an even
- 1:37:30Speaker 4: more updated update. It's coming from just a couple of
- 1:37:34Speaker 4: minutes ago. According to ESPN and multiple sources like Rappaport
- 1:37:40Speaker 4: and Garofalo, Jackson Dart's knee injury is more severe than
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: originally anticipated. The New York Giants quarterback could miss the
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: rest of the season. You heard John Harbaugh talking about
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: it in the post game and they felt like, oh man,
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: that's a, it could have been devastating and we're lucky
- 1:38:01Speaker 4: to have avoided that outcome. Well, it turns out it
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: might be a lot more devastating than people thought. And
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: it's always really tough to know with knee injuries, right?
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: There's a massive, massive difference between being able to walk
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: on a compromised knee and being able to play football
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: or play basketball or play any sport on a compromised knee.
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: Like you probably know people in your life that have
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: ruptured ACLs that have never had them repaired. that walk
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: just fine. And they just do their thing, right? Like
- 1:38:33Speaker 4: your body can adapt to those kinds of things. You
- 1:38:35Speaker 4: can change your gate just a little bit. I mean,
- 1:38:38Speaker 4: some athletes can beat compete on bad ACLs and even
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: on missing ACLs, but.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: There's a huge issue.
- 1:38:45Speaker 4: And by the way, I think it's his MCL rather
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: than his ACL, but There's a huge, huge difference between
- 1:38:51Speaker 4: being able to walk off the field like he did
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: and being able to stand on the sideline and even
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: rock back and forth a little bit and move and
- 1:38:58Speaker 4: talk to his teammates with a limp. There's a big,
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: big difference between that and being able to functionally play football.
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: At any level.
- 1:39:07Speaker 6: In the NFL, obviously, I don't know from experience, but
- 1:39:09Speaker 6: that's yikes. You know where I learned that it's possible
- 1:39:16Speaker 6: to move pretty good on a bad ACL? Not for
- 1:39:20Speaker 6: anything personally, but watching Klay Thompson, remember, 2019 against the Raptors?
- 1:39:25Speaker 6: He sprinted off the floor after he still shot the
- 1:39:29Speaker 6: free throw so that he could stay in the game
- 1:39:31Speaker 6: after he got checked out by the medical staff.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: I would like to know.
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: Where the difference is, if it's something like if maybe
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: you just have really strong– other ligaments like your MCLs
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: and your PCLs great. Or maybe you like, whether it's
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: musculature or it's the shape of your leg, whatever, because
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: there are some people who can function at a lot
- 1:39:55Speaker 4: higher level with it torn than others.
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: And I don't, I don't know how that's possible.
- 1:40:00Speaker 4: Actually, weirdly enough, when I, when I met my wife,
- 1:40:04Speaker 4: she had a torn ACL and like she was walking around,
- 1:40:09Speaker 4: she was just living her life and she had a bad,
- 1:40:11Speaker 4: like her ACL was gone. She had torn it. in
- 1:40:14Speaker 4: a skiing accident the previous winter. So she'd been walking
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: on this thing with some soreness and whatnot for months.
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: Jackson Dart, again, I'm probably misleading. As far as we know,
- 1:40:29Speaker 4: it's not an ACL, but if you watched the game
- 1:40:32Speaker 4: last night, the initial report was maybe a sprained MCL.
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: The updated information is that Perhaps it is a season
- 1:40:43Speaker 4: ending injury for Jackson dart, which would be devastating for
- 1:40:46Speaker 4: him would be devastating for the giants who felt like
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: they got the right coach who felt like, you know,
- 1:40:54Speaker 4: they've got a nice talented young core. They've got a
- 1:40:56Speaker 4: good mix of veterans and Brian Burns got hurt for
- 1:41:01Speaker 4: them last night as well. There was like kind of
- 1:41:03Speaker 4: a walking wounded situation at the end of the game
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: for the, uh, the New York giants, obviously Pooka Nakua
- 1:41:10Speaker 4: was out for the Rams. We already talked about that
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: in the early part of the show today, but that's
- 1:41:14Speaker 4: a bum deal for the giants and for Jackson dart.
- 1:41:17Speaker 4: And obviously the dart family, who's still here in Utah.
- 1:41:21Speaker 4: I mean, I think, I think, I think we saw
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: last night, his parents were at the game, if I'm
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: not mistaken. So dad, obviously former Utah safety and his brother,
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: a Utah commit that is playing at corner Canyon right now, man,
- 1:41:36Speaker 4: I guess he, If Jackson is out for an extended
- 1:41:40Speaker 4: period of time or even the whole season, then maybe
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: you'll see more of Jackson Dart around the Utah high
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: school football games and such.
- 1:41:50Speaker 6: Let's hope we don't see him because that means he's
- 1:41:52Speaker 6: going to be playing some football this.
- 1:41:53Speaker 2: Year for the Giants.
- 1:41:55Speaker 6: And like you said, potentially a promising season for them.
- 1:41:58Speaker 6: And for the Giants' sake, Jameis Winston is not it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: I think that's something we learned from last night. was
- 1:42:09Speaker 6: that anyone who's holding out hope that, Hey, Jamison or James,
- 1:42:13Speaker 6: excuse me, if Jamis gets a good opportunity here, maybe
- 1:42:16Speaker 6: he could still have some left in the tank. At
- 1:42:19Speaker 6: least last night, he showed that he has nothing left
- 1:42:22Speaker 6: in the game.
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: Speaker 2, James Winston is now in the NFL. He
- 1:42:25Speaker 4: is everyone's favorite teammate that you don't want to see
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: on the actual field.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: His teammates love him. He's this great locker room guy.
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: He's, he's going to be incredible on whatever college football
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: broadcast he ends up being a part of or pro
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: football broadcast. He ends up being a part of Jameis
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: is a character, man. And it's great. But when you
- 1:42:47Speaker 4: have to rely on that guy to go play football games,
- 1:42:50Speaker 4: it's just going to be wildly inconsistent.
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: And he just, he's awful at taking care of the football.
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: It's fine. Right?
- 1:42:56Speaker 4: Like it's not an insult to say that you're not
- 1:42:59Speaker 4: good enough to be a starting NFL quarterback on a
- 1:43:02Speaker 4: contending team. That's just the reality of the situation for
- 1:43:06Speaker 4: the backup. So it's a bum deal.
- 1:43:08Speaker 2: All right. We got to take a break here. We're
- 1:43:10Speaker 2: going to come back. Former New York giant, Jeff Schwartz
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: is going to join us.
- 1:43:14Speaker 4: We'll talk about the landscape and the changes and the
- 1:43:16Speaker 4: craziness going on in college football. We'll talk about some
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: of these developments in the NFL, including now an update
- 1:43:22Speaker 4: on Jackson darts injury.
- 1:43:24Speaker 2: It's the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 700 and 92
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: on FM.
- 1:43:32Speaker 3: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 1:43:36Speaker 3: best inside of your youth. Let's get back to OC
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:43:56Speaker 4: Hour number three on a Tuesday begins with my good friend,
- 1:43:59Speaker 4: longtime co-host of mine, football expert in both college and
- 1:44:03Speaker 4: the nfl uh and the occasional gambler as well jeff
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: schwartz welcome sir how.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: Are you i'm good buddy how we doing doing.
- 1:44:11Speaker 4: Great having a it's a beautiful day in salt lake
- 1:44:14Speaker 4: city having a fun time today um i we asked
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: this at the beginning of the show today about utah
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: football is there a program defining victory in your mind
- 1:44:25Speaker 4: for oregon football is there one that your experience as
- 1:44:29Speaker 4: a former Oregon Duck, an Oregon fan, whatever, you look
- 1:44:31Speaker 4: back at that and you say, that is when we
- 1:44:35Speaker 4: showed the world who we were.
- 1:44:38Speaker 10: Well, I feel like I certainly was part of one
- 1:44:42Speaker 10: of those games in 2007 when we finally beat USC, right?
- 1:44:44Speaker 10: That was like, oh, we're here, right? USC with Pete
- 1:44:48Speaker 10: Carroll for so many years had dominated out west, and
- 1:44:53Speaker 10: we finally beat them at home. It was a great
- 1:44:56Speaker 10: A great game, a great day. I felt like that
- 1:44:58Speaker 10: was a way for us to show that we're here.
- 1:45:00Speaker 10: I think we've had other program-defining wins since then. We
- 1:45:05Speaker 10: just haven't been able to win the big one yet.
- 1:45:08Speaker 10: But we've had, whether it was, I think, the Florida
- 1:45:10Speaker 10: State playoff win in 2014 was a big one, obviously, right,
- 1:45:13Speaker 10: before losing, unfortunately, to Ohio State. We've had plenty of
- 1:45:17Speaker 10: wins along the way where it's felt like it's defined
- 1:45:20Speaker 10: us And the positive, unfortunately, I think, like, every school
- 1:45:23Speaker 10: has the other way, right, where you just have these losses.
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: You're like, geez, man.
- 1:45:26Speaker 10: I think the losses feel almost like they have more
- 1:45:29Speaker 10: weight than the wins do sometimes.
- 1:45:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to try to stay on the positive
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: side of things. I'm just saying, like, I remember, like,
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: way more.
- 1:45:37Speaker 10: My point is I remember way more the losses that
- 1:45:40Speaker 10: were defining than I think I do the wins, unfortunately.
- 1:45:44Speaker 4: There's been a lot of noise around college game day
- 1:45:49Speaker 4: going to a fourth– SEC school or SEC meetup.
- 1:45:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:45:53Speaker 4: And like, we know that there's an ESPN and SEC partnership,
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: but obviously is it being exaggerated or is this something
- 1:46:01Speaker 4: that actually needs to be addressed, be addressed in order
- 1:46:04Speaker 4: to like maximize what game day is supposed to be
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: for college football?
- 1:46:10Speaker 10: Well, I mean, big new kickoff goes to 90% of big,
- 1:46:15Speaker 10: big 10 games, right? Now they do. They went to
- 1:46:17Speaker 10: big 12 last week. That was a special game in London, but, And,
- 1:46:19Speaker 10: you know, they might show up at a Holy War, right?
- 1:46:22Speaker 10: I mean, they have a Big 12 deal, right, so
- 1:46:24Speaker 10: that makes sense. But the SEC and the ESPN are
- 1:46:30Speaker 10: in it together. Of course they're going to choose that.
- 1:46:32Speaker 10: I think game day has really evolved from what it
- 1:46:35Speaker 10: used to be anyways. I don't think it still has
- 1:46:37Speaker 10: the same– it's not the same show that it was previously,
- 1:46:40Speaker 10: which is fine. It's a different show for different people,
- 1:46:42Speaker 10: and that's okay. But it's certainly not been what it
- 1:46:46Speaker 10: has been in the past, where I think it's just
- 1:46:47Speaker 10: been a, purely a celebration of the game, the best
- 1:46:51Speaker 10: story of the week, like all those things. I'm not
- 1:46:53Speaker 10: sure that that's the case anymore, which again, I mean,
- 1:46:55Speaker 10: things are changing. Times are changing. It's okay. It's not
- 1:46:58Speaker 10: what it used to be, but we have to acknowledge that.
- 1:47:01Speaker 10: It's just, it's not what the show used to be.
- 1:47:03Speaker 10: I don't watch the show at all now. I just
- 1:47:05Speaker 10: don't know if you feel the same way, but it's
- 1:47:07Speaker 10: just not really a show.
- 1:47:08Speaker 2: For me anymore. You know what I still love?
- 1:47:11Speaker 5: What?
- 1:47:12Speaker 4: I shouldn't say still love because it's kind of a
- 1:47:14Speaker 4: new feature since Pat McAfee jumped on. I do love
- 1:47:17Speaker 4: letting the kids do the charity kick. I love the kids,
- 1:47:21Speaker 4: the random campus kids, kicking field goals.
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: I think it's awesome.
- 1:47:25Speaker 10: I would actually tune in to watch Corso do the
- 1:47:27Speaker 10: headgear still. If I didn't watch. If they're at Oregon,
- 1:47:31Speaker 10: I would watch the first 15 minutes when they were
- 1:47:33Speaker 10: there just because I thought it was pretty cool. They
- 1:47:35Speaker 10: would show the crowd everything, the fans. And then I
- 1:47:37Speaker 10: would tune back in. for Corso's headgear pick. I thought
- 1:47:40Speaker 10: it was just the best ever, right? And there's no
- 1:47:42Speaker 10: way to replicate that, so it's not their fault, right?
- 1:47:44Speaker 10: You're not going to replicate that. But also, I've said
- 1:47:47Speaker 10: this before, I think McAfee is a phenomenal talent, right?
- 1:47:52Speaker 10: There's no way, I think anyone who denies that is
- 1:47:54Speaker 10: just full of themselves, right? He might not be the
- 1:47:56Speaker 10: best singer in the world, but as an entertainer, he
- 1:47:59Speaker 10: is very talented. But he's just not my cup of tea. Like,
- 1:48:02Speaker 10: there's nothing wrong with that, right? Like, I think he's
- 1:48:03Speaker 10: a very talented entertainer. I think his WWE stuff is great.
- 1:48:06Speaker 10: I think he's his radio show or whatever, YouTube program, like,
- 1:48:09Speaker 10: he gets great guests. Like, that's a big boost that
- 1:48:12Speaker 10: he gets able to get those guests. And they say
- 1:48:14Speaker 10: things on his show. He gets them to say things.
- 1:48:15Speaker 10: Those are all positives. It's just not my thing. It's
- 1:48:18Speaker 10: not really my thing to listen to him talk about football.
- 1:48:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:48:23Speaker 10: If he were to come and be like, you're a hater,
- 1:48:25Speaker 10: I'm not a hater. I'd love to have his job, man.
- 1:48:27Speaker 10: He's done a great job. He built this all for himself.
- 1:48:30Speaker 10: I don't find it interesting, though.
- 1:48:32Speaker 2: It's all right. Big matchups. Texas, Tennessee, the aforementioned.
- 1:48:38Speaker 4: Game day destination, that's ranked versus ranked. We've had a
- 1:48:42Speaker 4: few of those in the early part of the season.
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: Ole Miss, Florida, ranked versus ranked. Iowa, Michigan, ranked versus ranked. Obviously, Oregon,
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: USC is in this category as well. A & M, LSU,
- 1:48:55Speaker 4: I'm taking out Oregon, USC because we'll give that its
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: own attention here in just a little minute. Missouri, Mississippi State,
- 1:49:02Speaker 4: any of these stand out from the others for you?
- 1:49:06Speaker 10: I mean, Texas-Tennessee feels big because of what Texas did
- 1:49:08Speaker 10: to Ohio State, right? And if they win this game,
- 1:49:11Speaker 10: I think you have to look at them as the
- 1:49:12Speaker 10: best team in the country, right? And, you know, they
- 1:49:15Speaker 10: want to be that best team in the country. And
- 1:49:17Speaker 10: you win against Ohio State, you follow that up with
- 1:49:19Speaker 10: another win against a ranked Tennessee team. That feels like
- 1:49:22Speaker 10: a pretty good way to start the season. And it
- 1:49:25Speaker 10: really gives you any cushion, right, for a couple losses.
- 1:49:28Speaker 10: down the stretch here. So that game, to me, is
- 1:49:30Speaker 10: really fascinating for that reason. I think the really fun one,
- 1:49:33Speaker 10: it's really interesting. So, you know, Ole Miss, they just
- 1:49:35Speaker 10: beat LSU, right? Like, great win for Ole Miss. Felt
- 1:49:38Speaker 10: like a, you know, karma for Lane and whatnot. Do
- 1:49:41Speaker 10: you know who's favored in this game?
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: No.
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: Florida's favored by three at home. Oh, wait, I actually
- 1:49:46Speaker 2: did see this.
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: Semral was like, yeah, there's a lot of good drugs
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: out there because he doesn't want his team to be favored.
- 1:49:52Speaker 2: Favored by three after Ole Miss just beat LSU.
- 1:49:55Speaker 4: So, like, Is that a prediction of an emotional hangover
- 1:49:59Speaker 4: type game?
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: Here's the thing. I have a buddy.
- 1:50:02Speaker 10: You guys should listen to Bear Bets. It's a podcast
- 1:50:04Speaker 10: I do with Chris Flika and Sammy P. Sammy has
- 1:50:08Speaker 10: a power rankings. He makes his power rankings through various
- 1:50:11Speaker 10: different techniques. Power rankings is how he makes those point spreads.
- 1:50:16Speaker 10: It's out of 100. Georgia, I think, is like a 98.
- 1:50:19Speaker 10: Ohio State's a 90 out of 100. Utah's probably, my guess,
- 1:50:22Speaker 10: like 88.
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: And then So basically, it's that simple.
- 1:50:26Speaker 10: If Ohio State played Utah in neutral, they'd be 10-point favorite.
- 1:50:31Speaker 10: But that's how simple it is. It's just off the
- 1:50:32Speaker 10: power rankings. Now, of course, you adjust for home field advantage, right?
- 1:50:36Speaker 10: So let's say that the game is in Utah. You
- 1:50:38Speaker 10: give Utah four points for home field advantage. The game
- 1:50:40Speaker 10: is Ohio State minus six. So people just have Florida rated,
- 1:50:45Speaker 10: based off of the way they played so far this season,
- 1:50:46Speaker 10: rated a lot higher than me and you do. And
- 1:50:49Speaker 10: so that's how the rankings are made. Like, it's not
- 1:50:54Speaker 10: It's not just sort of out of nowhere. Florida's played
- 1:50:57Speaker 10: good football. You know, the Baylor game, they, you know.
- 1:51:00Speaker 2: No, that was Auburn. I'm sorry.
- 1:51:02Speaker 10: Florida just, who did they beat last week? Oh, Auburn.
- 1:51:04Speaker 10: They beat Auburn last week pretty handily. Like, they're playing
- 1:51:07Speaker 10: good football. So, I think that's what it is. It's
- 1:51:09Speaker 10: Ole Miss, maybe not as good as their record, according
- 1:51:13Speaker 10: to people that make the numbers, right, Sean? On the road,
- 1:51:15Speaker 10: so you give maybe Florida six points for the swamp, right? So,
- 1:51:19Speaker 10: maybe neutral site, Ole Miss here by three.
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: In this game. And that's how it works, right?
- 1:51:25Speaker 4: The university of Utah beat Utah state this last weekend,
- 1:51:28Speaker 4: 33 to zero things, you know, like they got a
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: little bit dodgy in the second half as you're starting
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: to rotate some backups in and stuff, but you still,
- 1:51:38Speaker 4: you blanked an opponent, you dominated the game.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: And interestingly enough.
- 1:51:44Speaker 4: Morgan Scali, as we asked about the offensive line over
- 1:51:48Speaker 4: and over and over again, praises the guys and says, yeah, we're,
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: We're going to get it dialed in in the next
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: couple of weeks who the starting five actually are. And
- 1:51:55Speaker 4: you and I have talked about this every single week
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: because you played offensive.
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: Line at the very highest level.
- 1:52:00Speaker 4: And, like, I thought this might be the case, that
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: they would still be figuring things out as they got
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: into Big 12 play. We've seen now Kelvin Obot, the
- 1:52:09Speaker 4: number one recruit. We've seen him play left guard with
- 1:52:12Speaker 4: the ones. We've seen him play left tackles with the
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: twos and threes. And is there any– should there be
- 1:52:18Speaker 4: any sense of unease or alarm– that we don't know
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: who the real starting five are as you head into
- 1:52:25Speaker 4: more meaningful games?
- 1:52:29Speaker 2: Short way to say it, a little bit, yes.
- 1:52:31Speaker 10: I actually feel this way about Oregon right now, where Oregon,
- 1:52:34Speaker 10: you know, we got to go to USC this weekend,
- 1:52:36Speaker 10: and we're still sort of rotating offensive linemen. And in
- 1:52:40Speaker 10: some positions, like, we're pretty much set at tackle, I think.
- 1:52:44Speaker 10: But guard, and they're still rotating tackles. I think it's
- 1:52:47Speaker 10: still a little uncertain.
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: And I.
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: I'm curious.
- 1:52:52Speaker 10: You want to go into a USC game with a
- 1:52:55Speaker 10: full understanding, I think, of what you want to be
- 1:52:57Speaker 10: on offense. You're Utah. You go to Iowa State. I
- 1:53:01Speaker 10: would say it's not great, but you're on the road
- 1:53:04Speaker 10: for your first road game with this new staff. You'd
- 1:53:07Speaker 10: like to have an offensive line, I think, more set
- 1:53:09Speaker 10: in stone. I just feel like for Oregon, I'm kind
- 1:53:14Speaker 10: of like, I don't love that our offensive line is
- 1:53:17Speaker 10: not really set yet as we head into... I looked
- 1:53:20Speaker 10: at USC as being the barometer of this is our five, right?
- 1:53:23Speaker 10: And you play three games now. I'm just not sure
- 1:53:25Speaker 10: we're there.
- 1:53:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:53:27Speaker 4: I can't decide how I'm supposed to feel about it
- 1:53:29Speaker 4: because I think you've gotten good things out of each guy.
- 1:53:32Speaker 4: And like one guy was hurt and he's, he got
- 1:53:35Speaker 4: his first action against Utah state and it's like, all right,
- 1:53:38Speaker 4: well maybe it makes sense, but sounds like there's still
- 1:53:41Speaker 4: some flux and you don't want flux. That's one position
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: group where you want it to be pretty definitive. At
- 1:53:49Speaker 4: least that's always been my perception.
- 1:53:51Speaker 10: Yes, so, you know, you have to work through that. Again,
- 1:53:55Speaker 10: they're not the only team that has to work through
- 1:53:57Speaker 10: these issues, but it does feel like, you know, not
- 1:54:00Speaker 10: in the best situation where you head into your first
- 1:54:02Speaker 10: road game and you're sort of not set on those yet.
- 1:54:06Speaker 4: If you're able to run effectively on the edges, but
- 1:54:09Speaker 4: anytime you try to go inside, and this is like
- 1:54:12Speaker 4: too blanket of a statement because Utah's had success in
- 1:54:15Speaker 4: both areas, but it seems kind of clear at this
- 1:54:18Speaker 4: moment that, they're better at running off tackle than they
- 1:54:21Speaker 4: are inside.
- 1:54:23Speaker 2: Is that, what explains that from the offensive line perspective?
- 1:54:30Speaker 10: Well, it would probably explain that your offensive line can't
- 1:54:33Speaker 10: sustain blocks inside the tackles very well, right? Because a
- 1:54:37Speaker 10: lot of outside tackle blocking, you know, is it, are
- 1:54:41Speaker 10: they running stretch or just getting the quarterbacks outside the pocket,
- 1:54:44Speaker 10: you know, RPOs and stuff like that. I mean, there's
- 1:54:46Speaker 10: a big difference in what, you know, Oregon has done
- 1:54:49Speaker 10: some of that this year, too, where they've had much
- 1:54:51Speaker 10: better success running the ball out to the tackles, but
- 1:54:52Speaker 10: a lot of that has been just sort of, we're
- 1:54:55Speaker 10: not even going to, it's not the offensive lines that
- 1:54:58Speaker 10: just get the ball on the edge, right, via design, right?
- 1:55:01Speaker 10: The offensive line's not really blocking anybody. So is it
- 1:55:04Speaker 10: more like outside zone is working, Sean, or is it
- 1:55:06Speaker 10: more that what's working is just off, is the quarterback
- 1:55:12Speaker 10: run stuff?
- 1:55:14Speaker 4: The quarterback, they haven't had to lean as hard on
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: the quarterback run stuff.
- 1:55:19Speaker 10: So it probably just means that there's still work to
- 1:55:22Speaker 10: do there inside, interior-wise, right? Because running the ball between
- 1:55:26Speaker 10: tackles is a lot of just, you know, it's technique, fundamentals, strain.
- 1:55:31Speaker 10: Some of it's formationally, right? Just making sure you guys
- 1:55:33Speaker 10: are in the right place and you have good leverage.
- 1:55:35Speaker 10: But a lot of it really just comes down to, like,
- 1:55:38Speaker 10: are we straining? Are we finishing? There's a lot of
- 1:55:42Speaker 10: movement inside, right? Tackles move, linebackers move. Are we ready
- 1:55:46Speaker 10: for that movement? A lot of times when you run
- 1:55:47Speaker 10: the ball outside, you can catch them in a stunt
- 1:55:51Speaker 10: or a blitz and like run away from it and stuff.
- 1:55:53Speaker 10: So I think that's, to me, just all those things
- 1:55:55Speaker 10: are very impactful here.
- 1:55:59Speaker 4: You and I spent a lot of time talking about
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: the difference between like pressure and manufactured pressure from defenses.
- 1:56:05Speaker 5: Yep.
- 1:56:06Speaker 4: Guys, you know, your front four getting wins and things
- 1:56:09Speaker 4: like that. And then your defensive coordinator having to help
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: everyone out. And, and that, It feels like a feature
- 1:56:17Speaker 4: right now for the university of Utah defense where they, they,
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: they did figure out how to get some pressure, but
- 1:56:23Speaker 4: it's not your defensive ends are not winning and getting sacks.
- 1:56:28Speaker 4: Now they are getting pressures. They are getting hurries, which
- 1:56:31Speaker 4: some people say is just as important of a stat.
- 1:56:33Speaker 4: I don't know where you fall on that one. But
- 1:56:35Speaker 4: you know, we've seen this team now really, you know,
- 1:56:39Speaker 4: bringing a lot and it's great in weeks one, two,
- 1:56:41Speaker 4: and three, but, when you haven't seen it or you've
- 1:56:44Speaker 4: been able to dial up something new, I start to
- 1:56:47Speaker 4: get more concerned when you put more and more stuff
- 1:56:50Speaker 4: on film and it becomes more and more recognizable and
- 1:56:53Speaker 4: an offensive coordinator is more and more likely to be
- 1:56:56Speaker 4: able to scheme against it and recognize it and say,
- 1:56:58Speaker 4: all right, we're going to throw to that spot where
- 1:56:59Speaker 4: Nate Ritchie, your safety, used to be, et cetera. How
- 1:57:03Speaker 4: do you parse that out and fix that for a defense?
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:57:10Speaker 10: Obviously, you hope that some of your front four start
- 1:57:13Speaker 10: getting a little bit better. The reason why you want
- 1:57:15Speaker 10: to rush four, obviously, is that leaves seven players that
- 1:57:19Speaker 10: are in coverage. The more players you have in coverage,
- 1:57:21Speaker 10: in theory, the better your pass defense should be. Hurries,
- 1:57:26Speaker 10: to me, are fine. I think if you rank them,
- 1:57:28Speaker 10: it's like hurries, pressures... Hits, sacks, right? Your hurry is fine,
- 1:57:35Speaker 10: but does a hurry mean the quarterback is off his
- 1:57:37Speaker 10: spot and still throwing the ball? Is it a hurry
- 1:57:40Speaker 10: with someone else getting a pressure, right? So it depends
- 1:57:43Speaker 10: on what it is. Look, colleges throw the ball so fast, Sean,
- 1:57:48Speaker 10: it's sometimes hard to really tell if a pass rush
- 1:57:51Speaker 10: stinks or the ball's gone too fast, right?
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: I think you'll get a good test this week.
- 1:57:55Speaker 10: Iowa State probably is not a team that's going to
- 1:57:57Speaker 10: throw the ball fast all the time, right? They're going
- 1:57:59Speaker 10: to hold the ball a little bit longer on third downs.
- 1:58:02Speaker 10: They have the players to do that. Utah State's throwing
- 1:58:03Speaker 10: the ball fast all the time, right? It's what they do.
- 1:58:06Speaker 10: And then as far as, you know, you can still generate.
- 1:58:11Speaker 10: pressure with four rushers with sim pressures, right? We talk
- 1:58:14Speaker 10: about the simulated pressure. You show, look this way, bring
- 1:58:18Speaker 10: four guys that way, and you still have seven in coverage.
- 1:58:20Speaker 10: There's ways to mitigate that. But ideally, you would love
- 1:58:23Speaker 10: to be a team that just got home with your
- 1:58:24Speaker 10: four defensive linemen.
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: Jeff Schwartz, our guest here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 1:58:28Speaker 4: talking all things college football. How much can you know
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: about a team before they go on the road? Utah's
- 1:58:34Speaker 4: had three in a row at home.
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: Nothing.
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:58:37Speaker 3: Nothing?
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: I mean, what do you think? I mean, I think,
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: I hope it's more than nothing. I think so far
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: it's been a check the box, right?
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:58:50Speaker 10: Check the box, good job. But until you go on
- 1:58:54Speaker 10: the road, I think that's really hard to tell what
- 1:58:56Speaker 10: your team's road conference game, your team's going to be.
- 1:58:58Speaker 10: I mean, look, not to make fun of USC for
- 1:59:01Speaker 10: the foulest time in a row, but, I mean, how
- 1:59:04Speaker 10: much do we hear, like, USC's different this year, they're different,
- 1:59:07Speaker 10: and they go on first road conference game, look exactly
- 1:59:10Speaker 10: the same team like it's had for five years in
- 1:59:12Speaker 10: a row now, right?
- 1:59:12Speaker 2: Like, it just has held true for many teams over
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: the years.
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: All right, let's talk about one of the other big
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: ranked versus ranked games because you're a former Oregon Duck.
- 1:59:27Speaker 4: And to give some insight into the group chat, usually,
- 1:59:31Speaker 4: you know, we have fun talking trash to our guy Kono, who's,
- 1:59:35Speaker 4: for whatever reason, a USC fan.
- 1:59:37Speaker 2: We usually team up on him.
- 1:59:39Speaker 4: But you've been reticent this week because I think it
- 1:59:43Speaker 4: seems like maybe you're a little bit scared for your Ducks.
- 1:59:47Speaker 2: I just don't know what team's going to show up.
- 1:59:49Speaker 5: So.
- 1:59:50Speaker 10: We played the first two games, and then Portland State,
- 1:59:52Speaker 10: we beat them 84-0. I didn't mean to start one side.
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: Why is Dan Lanning still throwing passes with 30 seconds
- 1:59:58Speaker 4: left in a 77-0 game?
- 2:00:01Speaker 10: I think because the four-string quarterback was in with the
- 2:00:04Speaker 10: four-string wide receivers.
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: He just wanted.
- 2:00:06Speaker 10: To have those guys play a little bit. I mean,
- 2:00:09Speaker 10: he said he asked the Portland State coach if they
- 2:00:11Speaker 10: wanted to cut down the time, because you can cut
- 2:00:13Speaker 10: down the time, right?
- 2:00:14Speaker 2: You can go to 10-minute quarters. He said no. So,
- 2:00:18Speaker 2: I mean.
- 2:00:20Speaker 2: No, it's fine. As long as you feel good about it,
- 2:00:21Speaker 2: that's fine. I just don't care. Tells me who you
- 2:00:23Speaker 2: are as a bully. Who cares?
- 2:00:26Speaker 10: But nonetheless, that, that, so what team shows up? So
- 2:00:33Speaker 10: the team that we saw the first two games schematically
- 2:00:35Speaker 10: offensively was boring and bland and just like pretty bad.
- 2:00:40Speaker 10: The team we saw against Portland State looked like a
- 2:00:42Speaker 10: different offense. Like just schematically, it was a different, like
- 2:00:45Speaker 10: they looked different offensively as far as what they did.
- 2:00:48Speaker 10: It looked like they decided, like, we kind of have
- 2:00:50Speaker 10: to try a little bit more on offense, which is
- 2:00:52Speaker 10: a terrible thing to say. But the offense was just
- 2:00:55Speaker 10: completely different. And so, like, my question is, what are
- 2:00:58Speaker 10: we seeing from this team with the offense against USC?
- 2:01:02Speaker 10: If we see that structure, we have a chance. If
- 2:01:05Speaker 10: we see defensive effort, we have a chance. If we don't,
- 2:01:08Speaker 10: we're going to lose. I feel very strongly that USC
- 2:01:11Speaker 10: is the same team they've always been. Like, I don't
- 2:01:13Speaker 10: feel like this is a team that's any different than
- 2:01:15Speaker 10: what they've been, Sean, over the years. They're the same team.
- 2:01:18Speaker 10: They showed against Rutgers, right? So the question becomes, obviously,
- 2:01:23Speaker 10: is that what are you getting from Oregon this week?
- 2:01:26Speaker 10: Are you getting, like, what we got, again, against Portland State?
- 2:01:29Speaker 10: Are you getting what we got against, you know, just structurally, structurally,
- 2:01:33Speaker 10: not like, you know, we're not playing.
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: With Portland State?
- 2:01:36Speaker 10: Or do you get more of the Oklahoma State, Boise
- 2:01:38Speaker 10: State type of play from our offense? If you tell
- 2:01:42Speaker 10: me what that is, I'll tell you who's going to
- 2:01:43Speaker 10: win the game. I... I don't... Just don't know. It's
- 2:01:49Speaker 10: not good to not know, right? I feel like that's terrible.
- 2:01:51Speaker 10: They're like, Canada's big game.
- 2:01:52Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 2:01:53Speaker 10: Are we going to be our best or not? So
- 2:01:56Speaker 10: I hate that that's the thought process, but it is, man. Look,
- 2:02:01Speaker 10: USC looks exactly like they've always been. They have two
- 2:02:04Speaker 10: defensive linemen that are better than usual, 97 and 94
- 2:02:07Speaker 10: was a true freshman, 94. But otherwise, Rutgers is terrible, bro.
- 2:02:12Speaker 10: And Rutgers moved the ball down the field on them
- 2:02:14Speaker 10: with ease. They're They're not going to stop anyone good
- 2:02:19Speaker 10: this year. They still have to play Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana, Washington.
- 2:02:22Speaker 10: It's a brutal schedule for USC.
- 2:02:25Speaker 4: Did you get a chance to watch any Houston-Texas Tech
- 2:02:28Speaker 4: on Friday night?
- 2:02:28Speaker 2: I did, yes.
- 2:02:29Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 2:02:30Speaker 7: Why?
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: It was a great game. It was awesome. Down to
- 2:02:33Speaker 2: the final inches on the last second tackle, right? So
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: pretty cool. But when you look at either of those
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: great teams, I mean, Texas Tech, we've kind of like.
- 2:02:45Speaker 4: People have gotten enamored with the fact that they bought
- 2:02:47Speaker 4: this crazy roster again, and I haven't been overly impressed
- 2:02:51Speaker 4: with them. I think Houston's good. I think Texas Tech
- 2:02:54Speaker 4: is good. I don't think either are great. I just
- 2:02:57Speaker 4: want you to confirm my biases, I guess.
- 2:02:59Speaker 2: Well, I mean, think about this.
- 2:03:02Speaker 10: Texas Tech lost three NFL defensive linemen, right?
- 2:03:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:03:09Speaker 10: They lost a quarterback who was good, and they replaced
- 2:03:11Speaker 10: him with the quarterback that they thought was going to
- 2:03:13Speaker 10: be good, who ended up being basically thrown out of
- 2:03:16Speaker 10: the sport.
- 2:03:18Speaker 2: They're not as good on the trenches.
- 2:03:23Speaker 10: They're just not as good this year. I understand the
- 2:03:26Speaker 10: excitement for them to be better this season. That made
- 2:03:30Speaker 10: sense because of what their success was last year, but
- 2:03:32Speaker 10: they're not.
- 2:03:34Speaker 10: They're not better than last year. I'd argue they're worse.
- 2:03:37Speaker 10: And I'm not sure Houston, you know, Willie Fritz is awesome. Like,
- 2:03:41Speaker 10: the coach, I don't know how good they are. But
- 2:03:44Speaker 10: I think just.
- 2:03:44Speaker 2: Tech is worse. But the thing about Tech is their
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: schedule's a joke, dude. Like, they don't play another ranked
- 2:03:49Speaker 2: team the rest of the season. That's right.
- 2:03:52Speaker 10: So they're going to get to the Big 12 Championship game.
- 2:03:54Speaker 10: Maybe it's your Utes. Maybe it's BYU. Maybe it's Houston.
- 2:03:59Speaker 10: And they're going to play. This is their schedule. They
- 2:04:02Speaker 10: need to pick 12th. Colorado, Arizona State, Cincinnati, Arizona, West Virginia.
- 2:04:07Speaker 10: West Virginia's a little spunky. They might be ranked by then,
- 2:04:10Speaker 10: but that's at home. At Oklahoma State, so maybe by
- 2:04:12Speaker 10: then Oklahoma State's sort of rounding into what they want
- 2:04:14Speaker 10: to be with Morris. Baylor and TCU. It's a pretty
- 2:04:19Speaker 10: easy schedule, man.
- 2:04:21Speaker 4: Yeah, you're hoping that West Virginia is actually good. You're
- 2:04:25Speaker 4: hoping that Oklahoma State is actually good. You're hoping that
- 2:04:27Speaker 4: TCU is actually good enough to challenge, and even in
- 2:04:31Speaker 4: those cases, you wouldn't be convinced. Even if they're good,
- 2:04:34Speaker 4: they're good enough to beat Texas Tech. Although I can't
- 2:04:38Speaker 4: complain too much about Texas Tech's schedule because Utah's got
- 2:04:40Speaker 4: a pretty friendly schedule themselves.
- 2:04:45Speaker 2: Yes, so a lot of things come down to schedule, man.
- 2:04:51Speaker 2: this is a one-bid league, though, right?
- 2:04:53Speaker 4: We were having a conversation earlier where, you know, like, yes,
- 2:04:56Speaker 4: it's great to see three Big 12 teams in the
- 2:04:58Speaker 4: top 15, but this is what the rankings did, and
- 2:05:02Speaker 4: these are not college football playoff rankings, but this is
- 2:05:05Speaker 4: what the rankings did to us last year. They were
- 2:05:06Speaker 4: just like, oh, look, you got these Utah's there, Texas
- 2:05:09Speaker 4: Tech's there, BYU's there, and then it's like the committee knew, like, oh,
- 2:05:13Speaker 4: that's going to come out in the wash, and the
- 2:05:15Speaker 4: Big 12's going to be a one-bid league. There's nothing
- 2:05:18Speaker 4: that tells me as of yet that the plans will
- 2:05:21Speaker 4: be any different for this year's college football playoff field.
- 2:05:26Speaker 10: Well, I think it depends on the, what the big
- 2:05:27Speaker 10: 10 does, right? If Oregon loses this weekend, they're out presumably, right?
- 2:05:33Speaker 10: USC is not making, they're not with their schedule making
- 2:05:35Speaker 10: a playoff. In my opinion, that leaves obviously Ohio state.
- 2:05:39Speaker 10: What if they drop a couple, right? With the loss
- 2:05:41Speaker 10: of Texas, like it, it, the, the big 10 might
- 2:05:44Speaker 10: only get two or three and that allows, you know,
- 2:05:49Speaker 10: someone else maybe to, To get in the mix, Sean.
- 2:05:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:05:53Speaker 10: I mean, the team I worry about more with the
- 2:05:56Speaker 10: Big 12 is Louisville.
- 2:05:59Speaker 5: Louisville. Interesting.
- 2:06:00Speaker 10: Like, Louisville's playing some good football, right? They've now lost
- 2:06:04Speaker 10: by three to Ole Miss, and they just beat SMU.
- 2:06:07Speaker 2: And they, give them a look. I don't know if
- 2:06:10Speaker 2: they get Miami this year or not.
- 2:06:13Speaker 10: But, you know, they can make it to the NCAA
- 2:06:15Speaker 10: championship game and certainly beat Miami.
- 2:06:17Speaker 2: That's not like without question.
- 2:06:19Speaker 10: And then Miami's in and LSU's in, especially Miami beats
- 2:06:22Speaker 10: Notre Dame later this season.
- 2:06:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:06:26Speaker 10: Louisville gets no Miami this year, though. It's, it's a
- 2:06:29Speaker 10: bunch of same as like Texas tech. There's a bunch
- 2:06:32Speaker 10: of non-ranked teams.
- 2:06:34Speaker 4: Uh, there was a time you were on the New
- 2:06:36Speaker 4: York giants roster. If you're on that New York giants
- 2:06:38Speaker 4: roster today, how are you feeling?
- 2:06:40Speaker 2: Not great.
- 2:06:41Speaker 10: They just announced, I think darts worse than we thought. So, um,
- 2:06:45Speaker 10: look pretty bad in the moment. And, uh, injuries are
- 2:06:51Speaker 10: part of it, man. Part of the game. I, I just,
- 2:06:55Speaker 10: it stinks. I've been one of those guys. I mean,
- 2:06:58Speaker 10: I've been card off. I didn't, I didn't fist pump
- 2:06:59Speaker 10: like Caleb Williams. I didn't come back a week later,
- 2:07:01Speaker 10: but I definitely, uh, definitely, um, you know, I've been
- 2:07:06Speaker 10: there before.
- 2:07:07Speaker 2: It's not very fun.
- 2:07:10Speaker 4: The memes that have come out of the Caleb Williams thing.
- 2:07:12Speaker 4: And like, we, I spent years making fun of him
- 2:07:15Speaker 4: when he was at USC. And obviously he's, He holds
- 2:07:18Speaker 4: a special place of hate in a lot of Utah
- 2:07:21Speaker 4: fans' hearts because of the rivalry that developed in the
- 2:07:25Speaker 4: bleep Utah and his fingernail paints and all that kind
- 2:07:28Speaker 4: of stuff, which is great. I think he's a good player.
- 2:07:30Speaker 4: I think he's just like this whole thing. You and
- 2:07:35Speaker 4: I talked about it a lot. He's like the Gen
- 2:07:37Speaker 4: Z quarterback that nobody knows how to handle a Gen
- 2:07:39Speaker 4: Z quarterback. That was the best representation I think we've
- 2:07:43Speaker 4: seen of it. To him, that's totally acceptable behavior. To
- 2:07:46Speaker 4: the rest of the NFL, and you... can speak to
- 2:07:48Speaker 4: this in a real way. Like, the rest of the
- 2:07:51Speaker 4: NFL fraternity, I imagine, is laughing at worst and cringing
- 2:07:55Speaker 4: at best.
- 2:07:58Speaker 2: Oh, geez, foe.
- 2:07:59Speaker 5: Oh.
- 2:08:00Speaker 2: We are pro-dog.
- 2:08:02Speaker 4: It happens every week now, and we appreciate it.
- 2:08:04Speaker 10: I just don't understand what he's barking at. Maybe a
- 2:08:06Speaker 10: leaf blew by. My kids might be home, though, too.
- 2:08:09Speaker 10: That's also a possibility. Emmy and Norma just running through
- 2:08:13Speaker 10: here at some point.
- 2:08:15Speaker 5: So....
- 2:08:17Speaker 2: I don't know what we're talking about anymore. Just the
- 2:08:20Speaker 2: reaction to Caleb Williams. Oh yeah.
- 2:08:22Speaker 10: Look, I, I think that you don't have to have
- 2:08:27Speaker 10: a reaction to everything. The memes have been really, really good.
- 2:08:30Speaker 10: They've been great. Um, but yeah, I mean, look, he's
- 2:08:33Speaker 10: a franchise quarterback. He thought he blew out his hamstring.
- 2:08:36Speaker 10: It's not being that, you know, I don't know. I
- 2:08:38Speaker 10: would have walked it off. I think I would have
- 2:08:39Speaker 10: walked it off, but I don't know, man. He got,
- 2:08:42Speaker 10: it's more of the fist bump, right? Like the, just
- 2:08:45Speaker 10: getting card off, um, the field's probably not a big deal,
- 2:08:48Speaker 10: but the fist pump at the end, like he's one
- 2:08:50Speaker 10: of those guys got, you know, boarded, right.
- 2:08:51Speaker 2: Like on a backboard.
- 2:08:53Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:08:55Speaker 10: That's the part that probably, um, is, is the thing
- 2:08:59Speaker 10: that I think gets everyone right.
- 2:09:00Speaker 2: It's a fist bump. And then it means it's been great.
- 2:09:02Speaker 10: Like when, you know, when, you know, my wife asked
- 2:09:05Speaker 10: me to take the trash out, I do it on time,
- 2:09:07Speaker 10: like all this stuff. It's just been like, it's been
- 2:09:09Speaker 10: so good.
- 2:09:09Speaker 4: The best one was the guy who said, uh, me
- 2:09:11Speaker 4: after sleeping on the uncomfortable couch when my wife gave birth.
- 2:09:14Speaker 2: That's. Oh yeah.
- 2:09:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:09:16Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 2:09:17Speaker 2: My kids were born in the middle of the day.
- 2:09:19Speaker 2: I never had to do that.
- 2:09:20Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 2:09:21Speaker 2: Must be nice.
- 2:09:23Speaker 5: Maybe.
- 2:09:23Speaker 2: I guess. Maybe the next one will be nighttime. Buddy,
- 2:09:27Speaker 2: there ain't no next one, my friend. Just put it
- 2:09:30Speaker 2: out there. Just put it out there in the world
- 2:09:32Speaker 2: for you. It's fine. I mean, not because of my doing.
- 2:09:35Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe she's got another someone she's with.
- 2:09:38Speaker 2: It ain't for me.
- 2:09:39Speaker 3: No.
- 2:09:40Speaker 2: So, like.
- 2:09:41Speaker 10: We had Emmy with IVF, and Meredith didn't tell me this,
- 2:09:46Speaker 10: but she went back to the doctor to see if
- 2:09:48Speaker 10: we could have a third one. And the doctor was like, no,
- 2:09:51Speaker 10: that's not happening. So I think medically she can't even
- 2:09:54Speaker 10: do it. Because she said she did think about it.
- 2:09:56Speaker 2: Oh, interesting. Yeah. All right, well, you're safe from another kid.
- 2:10:02Speaker 2: Are you? Are you going for more? Who knows, man?
- 2:10:07Speaker 2: You never know. Oh, I like it.
- 2:10:09Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:10:11Speaker 4: It's only two games, but Travis Kelsey looks really awesome
- 2:10:16Speaker 4: in these first two games. Is he like marrying the
- 2:10:21Speaker 4: queen of pop? Did this re-energize him, or is this
- 2:10:24Speaker 4: what we always should have expected from a 37-year-old tight.
- 2:10:28Speaker 3: End?
- 2:10:29Speaker 10: I just think Hall of Famers are fake shows, dude.
- 2:10:32Speaker 10: And they play longer than everyone else. They recover easier
- 2:10:37Speaker 10: than everyone else. They train better than everyone else. They
- 2:10:40Speaker 10: have the money and the resources to make that all happen.
- 2:10:43Speaker 10: And I just think he's a freak show, dude. And
- 2:10:46Speaker 10: I think that the Chiefs' offense, with the way they're
- 2:10:48Speaker 10: running the football and the way they're able to.
- 2:10:51Speaker 2: Use other wide receivers, he doesn't have to do a lot, right?
- 2:10:53Speaker 10: He's not getting triple-covered or double-covered anymore. Remember last year,
- 2:10:56Speaker 10: you know, Hollywood, Xavier Worthy got hurt. Rasheed Rice missed
- 2:11:01Speaker 10: eight weeks. Like, this is, he gets singled up now.
- 2:11:04Speaker 10: He's not getting double-teamed. Him and Mahomes are the two
- 2:11:08Speaker 10: fastest guys when someone's chasing them i think that ever
- 2:11:11Speaker 10: recorded like no one catches those two and yet if
- 2:11:14Speaker 10: you hadn't run a 40 they'd run a 5-5 you
- 2:11:16Speaker 10: know like it's it's insane how they just they know
- 2:11:19Speaker 10: how to use their bodies and it's very impressive dude
- 2:11:21Speaker 10: i'm i'm super impressed with the chief start so far
- 2:11:25Speaker 10: this year the way they played um and we'll see
- 2:11:28Speaker 10: look nfl's long it's so weird right the nfl two
- 2:11:31Speaker 10: games right and their teams are oh and two one
- 2:11:34Speaker 10: and one And the teams that have lost, like your fans,
- 2:11:37Speaker 10: of course you don't want to lose, but you're like, okay,
- 2:11:38Speaker 10: we're 0-2, whatever. We're 2-0, whatever, long season. At a
- 2:11:41Speaker 10: college football, you lose a game. It's like the end
- 2:11:42Speaker 10: of the world, dude.
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: Yeah, that's kind of how it goes.
- 2:11:48Speaker 5: It is.
- 2:11:50Speaker 4: I don't know if we're going to like it better
- 2:11:53Speaker 4: if the college world expands the playoff and makes it
- 2:11:57Speaker 4: feel more like the NFL, where you're like, ah, dang it,
- 2:12:00Speaker 4: we lost that one, but we'll be okay. You know,
- 2:12:03Speaker 4: I think that's part of the appeal of the college
- 2:12:05Speaker 4: football world where you want to be on the edge
- 2:12:08Speaker 4: of your seat and biting your fingernails over every single play.
- 2:12:13Speaker 10: Correct.
- 2:12:14Speaker 2: And it's why college football is one of the reasons
- 2:12:16Speaker 2: why it's so different than the NFL. Well, you're the man.
- 2:12:20Speaker 4: I always appreciate you giving us time. We'll talk again
- 2:12:23Speaker 4: next week.
- 2:12:24Speaker 2: Okay, buddy. Take care. Have a good week. Good luck
- 2:12:26Speaker 2: to your ducks. Thank you. That's Jeff Schwartz. college football
- 2:12:32Speaker 2: and NFL insider.
- 2:12:34Speaker 4: And look, he makes a point that he has made
- 2:12:37Speaker 4: before and he knows better than you or I, the
- 2:12:42Speaker 4: difference between even really good NFL players and the hall
- 2:12:47Speaker 4: of famers, the thing that separates Travis Kelsey from, you know,
- 2:12:53Speaker 4: Zach hurts or whatever. It's not even athleticism. It's not even, um,
- 2:13:00Speaker 4: you know, a skillset thing. It's just like, there's another
- 2:13:04Speaker 4: gear that these hall of famers have that even the
- 2:13:07Speaker 4: best of the best of the best just don't have.
- 2:13:10Speaker 4: And that's why some of them can do it into
- 2:13:13Speaker 4: their forties in like Tom Brady's case. It's really, really
- 2:13:17Speaker 4: crazy to see. Speaking of things, they got memefied by
- 2:13:22Speaker 4: the way, the, uh, Taylor Swift celebration of Travis Kelsey's
- 2:13:27Speaker 4: Touchdown celebration was also really good. That's my husband pointing
- 2:13:30Speaker 4: at her wedding ring.
- 2:13:31Speaker 2: It's pretty great. All right, we've got to take a
- 2:13:37Speaker 2: break here. We're going to come back.
- 2:13:40Speaker 4: I've got some more responses from the text line, 877-353-0700.
- 2:13:46Speaker 4: The program-defining victory for you as a Utah football fan.
- 2:13:50Speaker 4: What is the win that you saw today? on TV,
- 2:13:53Speaker 4: in person, whatever. And he said, that is Utah football.
- 2:13:57Speaker 4: That is what Utah football is supposed to be. That
- 2:14:00Speaker 4: is this program. And maybe it made the country take notice.
- 2:14:02Speaker 4: Maybe it made the rival take notice.
- 2:14:04Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 2:14:05Speaker 4: Sean O'Connell Show on Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN
- 2:14:09Speaker 4: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:09Speaker 2: Invisible airwaves crackle with life. Right in the candle.
- 2:14:22Speaker 3: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:14:25Speaker 3: the best youth football coverage.
- 2:14:27Speaker 2: Here's O.C.
- 2:14:28Speaker 3: From the Murdoch Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 2:14:49Speaker 4: Had a great response to a question I asked at
- 2:14:51Speaker 4: the beginning of the show. The program defining victory in
- 2:14:54Speaker 4: Utah football history for you.
- 2:14:56Speaker 2: The one that you watched and were like, aha, that's it.
- 2:14:58Speaker 2: That's the thing. That's us.
- 2:15:00Speaker 4: 877-353-0700 at Real OC Sports. This one is another excellent point.
- 2:15:02Speaker 4: This is from all the way down in St.
- 2:15:03Speaker 5: George.
- 2:15:03Speaker 2: 1853 says....
- 2:15:15Speaker 4: The defining program win has to be the first BCS buster.
- 2:15:19Speaker 4: And look, we were talking about that and I was like,
- 2:15:21Speaker 4: I mean, but we knew it was going to happen.
- 2:15:23Speaker 4: We knew that Utah was going to win that game,
- 2:15:25Speaker 4: but this is the most important point here. Capping off
- 2:15:30Speaker 4: that perfect season made Utah a firm football school. And
- 2:15:35Speaker 4: that is as impactful, more impactful than anything else. And
- 2:15:39Speaker 4: it's absolutely correct. Maybe the the most interesting thing that
- 2:15:44Speaker 4: has happened with Utah's athletics program was that transition for
- 2:15:51Speaker 4: the longest time, Utah was a basketball school and a
- 2:15:55Speaker 4: really respected and a really good one. And you credit,
- 2:16:01Speaker 4: you know, Majerus and, Arnie Farren. And you go all
- 2:16:05Speaker 4: the way back to what Masaka. And there's just a
- 2:16:07Speaker 4: lot of reasons why Utah and basketball were put together.
- 2:16:12Speaker 4: Even like non Utah basketball, the greatest NCAA football basketball
- 2:16:17Speaker 4: game ever played in.
- 2:16:18Speaker 2: Unless some people's mind was up at the Huntsman center.
- 2:16:20Speaker 3: Right?
- 2:16:20Speaker 4: So there's like, it was a basketball, basketball, basketball thing.
- 2:16:24Speaker 4: I moved to the state of Utah in 1992. This
- 2:16:27Speaker 4: was a basketball state. I moved from a hockey state
- 2:16:31Speaker 4: and they told us the company my dad was working
- 2:16:35Speaker 4: for was like, yeah, your kids are going to play
- 2:16:36Speaker 4: basketball here. And my parents were like, Hey, you're going
- 2:16:40Speaker 4: to play basketball.
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: And we were like, what? It was a bass. We
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: were a basketball culture. We were a basketball state.
- 2:16:47Speaker 4: BYU had achieved great success in football, but until the
- 2:16:55Speaker 4: the restoration of an even evenly matched and healthy rivalry.
- 2:16:59Speaker 4: It didn't allow BYU even to thrive the way that
- 2:17:02Speaker 4: maybe they needed to as a football school. And then
- 2:17:05Speaker 4: Fiesta bowl, BCS buster undefeated season nationally ranked top five
- 2:17:12Speaker 4: team on the national stage made Utah a football school
- 2:17:17Speaker 4: and a football state. If you look at the absolute
- 2:17:23Speaker 4: explosion of the state of football in the state of
- 2:17:28Speaker 4: Utah since then, high school football is so drastically different
- 2:17:34Speaker 4: now than it was in the early 2000s, in the
- 2:17:38Speaker 4: late 90s, in the early 90s, in the 80s.
- 2:17:40Speaker 2: It is night and day different.
- 2:17:44Speaker 4: The exposure, the media coverage, the talent in the state,
- 2:17:48Speaker 4: the level of coaching that these kids get, the, how
- 2:17:51Speaker 4: many guys get recruited. We've talked about that ad nauseum
- 2:17:54Speaker 4: on this show.
- 2:17:55Speaker 2: It is bananas. How much different it is.
- 2:17:58Speaker 4: And you can trace a lot of that back to
- 2:18:02Speaker 4: that game, that year of Utah football, great text from 1853.
- 2:18:09Speaker 4: Ike from Salt Lake city has a, I love the
- 2:18:12Speaker 4: phone calls, by the way, all of you out there
- 2:18:14Speaker 4: that are calling again, this is one of the great
- 2:18:17Speaker 4: joys of my life right now, hearing from our listeners.
- 2:18:19Speaker 4: So Ike, you have a program defining victory for this
- 2:18:23Speaker 4: Utah football program.
- 2:18:25Speaker 2: I do.
- 2:18:26Speaker 7: I'm a long time youth fan. I started, became a
- 2:18:29Speaker 7: youth fan back in the Jim fossil era. And for me, the, when,
- 2:18:33Speaker 7: when BYU absolutely owned us and we never went to
- 2:18:36Speaker 7: bowl games, And so the defining moment for the program,
- 2:18:40Speaker 7: the way I look at it, was Ron McBride's first
- 2:18:42Speaker 7: win over BYU. The first 34-31 was, that is when
- 2:18:47Speaker 7: everything changed. That's when the youths began quit being a doormat.
- 2:18:52Speaker 7: That's when things instantly became equal between Utah and BYU.
- 2:18:58Speaker 7: And that's when Utah really became a football school, in
- 2:19:01Speaker 7: my opinion.
- 2:19:03Speaker 2: I love that.
- 2:19:04Speaker 4: And it's important context for people who were like, maybe
- 2:19:08Speaker 4: a little bit too young to realize how impactful that was.
- 2:19:11Speaker 4: Maybe you became a fan later on and don't realize
- 2:19:14Speaker 4: like the roots, the beginning of it. And we do spend,
- 2:19:17Speaker 4: I think we do too much talking about Kyle Whittingham
- 2:19:21Speaker 4: and urban Meyer and now Morgan Scali without doing enough
- 2:19:25Speaker 4: to acknowledge, at least on the air, I don't do
- 2:19:28Speaker 4: enough to acknowledge a guy who coached me when I
- 2:19:29Speaker 4: was at Weber state, Ron McBride coached, is the beginning
- 2:19:34Speaker 4: of a lot of this. And for that fan, for Ike,
- 2:19:38Speaker 4: and for others, it was fossil. It was even before that.
- 2:19:42Speaker 4: But that alteration of mentality, that, hey, we can now
- 2:19:49Speaker 4: beat BYU. We can now beat Colorado State. We can
- 2:19:52Speaker 4: now go every year and take on Air Force. We
- 2:19:55Speaker 4: can do this on a reliable level, on every single season,
- 2:19:59Speaker 4: every single game, every single week type of level.
- 2:20:02Speaker 2: It just had to happen at some point.
- 2:20:04Speaker 4: And by the way, the, it didn't just happen with like, Oh,
- 2:20:08Speaker 4: he showed up and he used the same guys that
- 2:20:10Speaker 4: had always been here. Like he opened up recruiting pipelines
- 2:20:14Speaker 4: that still Utah depends on that. By the way, the
- 2:20:18Speaker 4: whole country is indebted to him for in a lot
- 2:20:21Speaker 4: of ways, not only him, but Rodney pride was one
- 2:20:25Speaker 4: of the first few that were willing to hop on
- 2:20:29Speaker 4: a plane for 16 hours or however long it took
- 2:20:33Speaker 4: to get to American Samoa, to go to Hawaii and
- 2:20:37Speaker 4: then jump down to the islands from there. Like there
- 2:20:40Speaker 4: were a lot of coaches in the eighties and nineties
- 2:20:42Speaker 4: who were just not doing that. And even the ones
- 2:20:46Speaker 4: who did it, not all of them knew the right
- 2:20:49Speaker 4: way at that time to recruit those types of players.
- 2:20:52Speaker 2: That culture is very specific and very unique.
- 2:20:56Speaker 4: And you can sell the kid anything you want, but
- 2:20:59Speaker 4: if mom and dad don't trust that you're going to
- 2:21:02Speaker 4: keep raising them the right way and you're going to
- 2:21:04Speaker 4: take them under your wing and turn them into the
- 2:21:06Speaker 4: kind of person mom and dad wants them to be, well,
- 2:21:09Speaker 4: you're not going to win that.
- 2:21:09Speaker 2: So that's a, that's really great. It's a really, really
- 2:21:13Speaker 2: great observation.
- 2:21:17Speaker 4: It's been a fun, a kind of random topic that
- 2:21:20Speaker 4: we got into today. I, I enjoy it. Um, A
- 2:21:27Speaker 4: reminder to anyone out there, if you've been in an
- 2:21:29Speaker 4: accident recently or even if it was a long time ago,
- 2:21:34Speaker 4: you didn't deserve to have that happen to you. And
- 2:21:36Speaker 4: if you're questioning right now whether or not, you know,
- 2:21:41Speaker 4: your finances are ever going to be the same in
- 2:21:43Speaker 4: the future, your mobility is going to be the same
- 2:21:45Speaker 4: in the future, you're stressing over things, you're likely questioning
- 2:21:49Speaker 4: a lot.
- 2:21:51Speaker 2: Maybe you don't know where to go for help. We've got.
- 2:21:58Speaker 4: Personal injury attorneys here in the state of Utah, the
- 2:22:01Speaker 4: advocates that are out there to be a partner for
- 2:22:05Speaker 4: you in making sure that you maximize compensation. If you
- 2:22:08Speaker 4: are due compensation from your insurance companies, from the insurance
- 2:22:12Speaker 4: company of a store or a, or a place where
- 2:22:15Speaker 4: maybe you got hurt. They want to make sure that
- 2:22:18Speaker 4: you are taken care of so that the stress that
- 2:22:20Speaker 4: you feel over finances and getting back to work is
- 2:22:23Speaker 4: taken away from your recovery process. And you can just
- 2:22:26Speaker 4: get back to focusing and making sure that you're the
- 2:22:28Speaker 4: best version of yourself.
- 2:22:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:22:31Speaker 4: Utah advocates.com 801-845-9025. Give a call, tell them OC sent you,
- 2:22:39Speaker 4: and make sure that you are getting yourself. You can
- 2:22:41Speaker 4: also go to utahadvocates.com, and they have a link right there.
- 2:22:44Speaker 4: They have the chat feature right there. If you don't
- 2:22:46Speaker 4: want to pick up that phone call, you're nervous about
- 2:22:47Speaker 4: talking to somebody about it, you don't want to be vulnerable,
- 2:22:50Speaker 4: that's fine.
- 2:22:51Speaker 2: It's a little bit easier to just type it down.
- 2:22:54Speaker 4: Utahadvocates.com, tell them OC sent you. Ben from Farmington, is
- 2:22:59Speaker 4: that right? Ben, we're going to sneak in before we
- 2:23:02Speaker 4: take a break.
- 2:23:02Speaker 2: How are you, Ben?
- 2:23:04Speaker 7: I'm great.
- 2:23:05Speaker 8: Thanks for taking my call. Hey, I know Ike already
- 2:23:06Speaker 8: covered it, but that 93 win, I guess I'm an old,
- 2:23:09Speaker 8: but I was a young teenager at that time. That
- 2:23:11Speaker 8: 93 win in Provo, I think, was the seismic event
- 2:23:14Speaker 8: that changed the course of Utah football. I know Ron
- 2:23:17Speaker 8: McBride had around that same time, I can't remember which
- 2:23:20Speaker 8: year it was, a big win on the road against Wisconsin,
- 2:23:23Speaker 8: which I know at the time Wisconsin wasn't great, but still,
- 2:23:25Speaker 8: for a team from Utah to go out there, get
- 2:23:27Speaker 8: that win, and then those three wins in a row
- 2:23:30Speaker 8: over BYU... Ninety-four, Ron McBride went to Colorado State. Both
- 2:23:35Speaker 8: teams were highly ranked. Primetime ABC game. Everybody in the
- 2:23:39Speaker 8: country was watching because there were limited games back then
- 2:23:43Speaker 8: on TV, and Ron McBride took them back to Colorado State.
- 2:23:47Speaker 8: National TV, Harold Lusk, I think it was Henry or Harold,
- 2:23:51Speaker 8: I can't remember which one, had just the game-sealing pick-six.
- 2:23:56Speaker 8: Those games, I think people forget about them, but Ron
- 2:23:59Speaker 8: McBride created, set the table for what we see today.
- 2:24:03Speaker 8: Without Ron McBride and those wins, we don't have a stadium.
- 2:24:07Speaker 8: We don't have Urban Meyer coming in here, picking up
- 2:24:11Speaker 8: the pieces, and taking us to an undefeated season. We
- 2:24:14Speaker 8: don't have the Sugar Bowl, and we don't have Morgan Scali.
- 2:24:18Speaker 8: Ron McBride deserves more credit than anybody in Utah football,
- 2:24:21Speaker 8: I think, for what he did for the program and
- 2:24:24Speaker 8: had so many early– program defining wins in those first
- 2:24:29Speaker 8: four or five years of his, of his program.
- 2:24:32Speaker 2: Anyway, that's my thoughts. I appreciate that phone call. And yeah, look,
- 2:24:36Speaker 2: 93 was huge.
- 2:24:37Speaker 4: And then they, they springboarded off of that in 1994,
- 2:24:39Speaker 4: ended up the highest ranking in school history at that time,
- 2:24:45Speaker 4: number eight in the coaches poll, number 10 in the AP,
- 2:24:49Speaker 4: they finished 10 and two in 1994. That was part
- 2:24:51Speaker 4: of that, that streak that they built against BYU and,
- 2:24:55Speaker 4: That was a ranked BYU team when.
- 2:24:58Speaker 2: You won 34-31 again.
- 2:24:59Speaker 4: And then you finished the season beating Arizona, a top
- 2:25:06Speaker 4: 15 Pac-12 team, right? So that was the Desert Swarm defense,
- 2:25:11Speaker 4: if I'm not mistaken. So, yeah, Ron McBride, I'm glad.
- 2:25:15Speaker 4: There's a reason his name's on the side of the building, right?
- 2:25:17Speaker 4: I mean, it's not like he's unappreciated, but even with that,
- 2:25:22Speaker 4: maybe he is underappreciated, and I... I love the perspective
- 2:25:25Speaker 4: we're getting from the, especially the fans that maybe were
- 2:25:28Speaker 4: predated the Urban Meyer bandwagon, if that makes sense. Derek
- 2:25:35Speaker 4: says the most impactful win for Utah is the Sugar Bowl.
- 2:25:38Speaker 4: Without that win, they did not go to the Pac-12.
- 2:25:39Speaker 4: They did not go to the Big 12. Potentially more
- 2:25:42Speaker 4: with the Fiesta Bowl, they became Boise State. Before Boise State,
- 2:25:45Speaker 4: the Sugar Bowl, the Utes became what they are now. That's, yeah,
- 2:25:49Speaker 4: like it could have stopped at, Boise State level, right?
- 2:25:54Speaker 4: For Utah, it could have ended there if you just
- 2:25:56Speaker 4: had the Fiesta Bowl and you never graduated beyond that.
- 2:26:00Speaker 4: I'm actually not as convinced as other people are that
- 2:26:02Speaker 4: winning your way into the Pac-12 is really what happened
- 2:26:05Speaker 4: because Colorado didn't win its way into the Pac-12. Colorado
- 2:26:09Speaker 4: was a terrible, terrible program when they decided to add
- 2:26:14Speaker 4: that Denver and Boulder market.
- 2:26:17Speaker 2: But anyway, I'm not going to spoil anyone's fun.
- 2:26:23Speaker 4: Even though we lost 48, 45, the 2022 Rose bowl
- 2:26:26Speaker 4: against Ohio state was one of the best statements games,
- 2:26:29Speaker 4: games I've seen the youth play when toe to toe
- 2:26:31Speaker 4: with CJ Stroud and Jackson Smith and jig, but that
- 2:26:33Speaker 4: was unreal. It's interesting. I, no one is going to
- 2:26:36Speaker 4: bring up a loss as kind of like their number
- 2:26:39Speaker 4: one defining moment for any team or even a top
- 2:26:42Speaker 4: 10 defining moment for any team. But that was Matt.
- 2:26:46Speaker 4: I mean, that is the best college football game I've
- 2:26:48Speaker 4: ever seen. And if Utah had won. It would be
- 2:26:52Speaker 4: a thousand times better. But even without that, it was
- 2:26:57Speaker 4: an incredible moment. And the fact that the Rose Bowl
- 2:27:02Speaker 4: itself just became Rice-Eccles Southwest, that was in and of
- 2:27:08Speaker 4: itself a really fascinating and incredible thing. Ninth win in
- 2:27:14Speaker 4: the 2010 to 2019 game-winning streak over BYU is Kelly Harvey's. Look,
- 2:27:21Speaker 4: that's a big streak, and it's one that you've got
- 2:27:26Speaker 4: to interrupt now on the other side of things when
- 2:27:29Speaker 4: the opportunity arises. Great stuff from all of you who've
- 2:27:33Speaker 4: been weighing in all day. We'll take a quick one here.
- 2:27:37Speaker 4: We'll do some crosstalk with Spence to close out the show.
- 2:27:39Speaker 4: It's the Sean O'Connor Show. Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:27:45Speaker 3: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:27:48Speaker 3: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:28:17Speaker 4: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 792
- 2:28:20Speaker 4: on FM. We're closing things out. Spence check-ins is here.
- 2:28:25Speaker 4: The drive is next. Spence, a fun show we've had today.
- 2:28:30Speaker 4: I springboarded off what happened with Ole Miss and LSU
- 2:28:37Speaker 4: over the weekend.
- 2:28:37Speaker 2: I was like, you know what?
- 2:28:38Speaker 4: That is for, for maybe not for Ole Miss, the institution.
- 2:28:43Speaker 4: But for the current players and coaches and the fans
- 2:28:45Speaker 4: that are like in school now and stuff like that
- 2:28:47Speaker 4: is a program defining victory.
- 2:28:49Speaker 2: The revenge game against Lane Kiffin.
- 2:28:52Speaker 4: When he took all the best players and he took
- 2:28:54Speaker 4: the coaches and he said, it's better over here. The
- 2:28:57Speaker 4: grass is greener. And then he came back to town
- 2:29:00Speaker 4: and you beat him like that to me.
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: I was like, okay. And then I thought about it.
- 2:29:04Speaker 4: I was like, okay, Utah football, I think has had
- 2:29:06Speaker 4: several wins that you could call program defining. And so
- 2:29:10Speaker 4: I just threw it out there to start the show,
- 2:29:12Speaker 4: see if we could draw up a little conversation. And
- 2:29:14Speaker 4: it ended up really like becoming on, taking on a
- 2:29:18Speaker 4: life of its own and it became the show. So
- 2:29:22Speaker 4: this is different based on age. This is different based
- 2:29:25Speaker 4: on whether you're an alum or not, whether you were
- 2:29:27Speaker 4: there for the games, whatever you and I are close
- 2:29:29Speaker 4: to the same age. We're both graduates of the university
- 2:29:32Speaker 4: of Utah. You watch this school transition from being a
- 2:29:36Speaker 4: basketball school to a football school and is there a
- 2:29:39Speaker 4: program defining victory for Spence check?
- 2:29:42Speaker 11: It's an excellent, excellent question. And taking phone calls on
- 2:29:46Speaker 11: the program, little throwback, dude.
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: I like it. Bill and I used to take calls. Yeah,
- 2:29:50Speaker 2: we're doing it. We're doing it.
- 2:29:51Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:29:52Speaker 2: I like it.
- 2:29:52Speaker 11: Uh, is James up to the task for screening? Cause
- 2:29:55Speaker 11: it all really, it, it lands on the producer's shoulders.
- 2:29:58Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:29:59Speaker 4: Uh, so far he's, uh, shown some acumen for screening
- 2:30:01Speaker 4: the phone call.
- 2:30:02Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:30:02Speaker 2: That's good. And then, uh, Gordon always wanted to take calls.
- 2:30:05Speaker 2: I never would allow it.
- 2:30:06Speaker 11: So it was fun to hear some people call in
- 2:30:09Speaker 11: and chime in on the topic because it is a
- 2:30:11Speaker 11: really good question.
- 2:30:12Speaker 2: There are probably five or six options.
- 2:30:15Speaker 11: You read a text that I would probably begrudgingly agree
- 2:30:19Speaker 11: with only because of what the entire season meant to
- 2:30:24Speaker 11: the program, not just the program, but also what football
- 2:30:27Speaker 11: became in our state. And that is the Fiesta Bowl
- 2:30:29Speaker 11: win in 2004. Now you were at that game, right?
- 2:30:32Speaker 2: You were there. I was there. Yeah, as was I.
- 2:30:36Speaker 11: And there was no doubt what the outcome was going
- 2:30:40Speaker 11: to be.
- 2:30:40Speaker 5: Correct.
- 2:30:41Speaker 11: Like even Yogi Roth, who was doing some work for
- 2:30:44Speaker 11: Pitt at the time, I believe. He's joined the show,
- 2:30:47Speaker 11: of course, over the years. And he has said on
- 2:30:49Speaker 11: multiple occasions, even all of us knew we were getting smoked, right?
- 2:30:53Speaker 11: So the game in and of itself in a vacuum
- 2:30:56Speaker 11: isn't necessarily like, you know, Sugar Bowl 2009. It was Alabama.
- 2:31:01Speaker 11: And because it was Alabama... You know, there's a case
- 2:31:04Speaker 11: to be made that that's the game. Heard a couple
- 2:31:06Speaker 11: of callers talk about Ronnie Mack's first win over BYU.
- 2:31:09Speaker 11: Excellent answer. But what that win in the Fiesta Bowl
- 2:31:13Speaker 11: meant from 30,000 feet, as far as making sure that
- 2:31:18Speaker 11: season ended the way that it did, putting Utah on
- 2:31:21Speaker 11: the map nationally, unfortunately putting Urban on the map nationally.
- 2:31:26Speaker 11: So we all kind of got a feeling like this
- 2:31:28Speaker 11: guy's not here. He's here for a good time, not
- 2:31:30Speaker 11: a long time.
- 2:31:31Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:31:32Speaker 11: But that, to me, is probably the answer just for
- 2:31:35Speaker 11: what it did for the entire program.
- 2:31:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:31:37Speaker 4: We knew he was leaving at that point. Remember, he
- 2:31:40Speaker 4: had already taken the Florida job. Because it's like, okay.
- 2:31:43Speaker 4: But what a different year of college football it was
- 2:31:46Speaker 4: even then. He did the opposite of the Lane Kiffin thing.
- 2:31:49Speaker 4: He said, I'm going to finish it out with the
- 2:31:51Speaker 4: guys at Utah. And then I'll... moved to Gainesville and
- 2:31:56Speaker 4: that's what, that's what happened.
- 2:31:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:31:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:31:58Speaker 2: So that season was memorable in a lot of ways.
- 2:32:01Speaker 11: Like if you were a student at the U during
- 2:32:05Speaker 11: urban's two years, you experienced the seismic shift that a
- 2:32:10Speaker 11: lot of people, quite frankly, never thought was possible, right?
- 2:32:14Speaker 11: Cause you'd made a couple of other good points about
- 2:32:15Speaker 11: where we were at as a community and as a state,
- 2:32:19Speaker 11: as far as the ecosystem of sport. And in a
- 2:32:22Speaker 11: way we are still a basketball state and, But football
- 2:32:27Speaker 11: rules of the day.
- 2:32:27Speaker 2: Here, and it's really not even close now.
- 2:32:31Speaker 11: Little known fact, the highest watched college and pro basketball
- 2:32:35Speaker 11: game in the history of the sport took place in
- 2:32:37Speaker 11: our state. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Huntsman Center, 1979. Michael
- 2:32:43Speaker 11: Jordan's last game with the Bulls, 1998. Highest watched NBA
- 2:32:47Speaker 11: and college basketball games took place in the state of Utah.
- 2:32:50Speaker 5: Wow.
- 2:32:51Speaker 2: And, you know, there's a gym in every church.
- 2:32:55Speaker 11: Chances are even if you weren't a high school basketball
- 2:32:58Speaker 11: player or college basketball player, you knew how to play
- 2:33:00Speaker 11: basketball because you went to the church on Saturday mornings
- 2:33:04Speaker 11: to get an elbow from your bishop, who typically was
- 2:33:07Speaker 11: a nice guy, but then you throw him on a
- 2:33:08Speaker 11: basketball court and he's freaking Dennis Rodman.
- 2:33:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. You know, we all played ward ball growing up, right?
- 2:33:13Speaker 2: Even I did. With your Patrick Ewing jersey, if I
- 2:33:17Speaker 2: remember correctly. Yeah, that's right.
- 2:33:18Speaker 11: Yeah, so I always said that, like, when I moved
- 2:33:21Speaker 11: out here, playing basketball where I played basketball in the Northeast,
- 2:33:25Speaker 11: I played against more top tier players.
- 2:33:29Speaker 2: But when I moved out here, I'm like, everybody knows
- 2:33:30Speaker 2: how to play this game.
- 2:33:31Speaker 11: It, it, it's, it's kind of a wild deal how
- 2:33:35Speaker 11: basketball is in our culture in a way.
- 2:33:39Speaker 2: And when the jazz are really good, they still move
- 2:33:40Speaker 2: the needle.
- 2:33:42Speaker 11: But in today's day and age of collegiate athletics, you
- 2:33:45Speaker 11: have to have a, an elite football program. And I
- 2:33:50Speaker 11: don't know how many people believed it was possible to,
- 2:33:53Speaker 11: for Utah to ever elevate itself the way that 2004 elevated.
- 2:33:59Speaker 11: And then to your point, we always need, and you
- 2:34:02Speaker 11: will hear from him on the program today. There are
- 2:34:05Speaker 11: seven assistant coaches, or excuse me, there are seven coaches,
- 2:34:10Speaker 11: head and coordinators and assistants with the Utes right now
- 2:34:14Speaker 11: that owe their coaching career to Ron McBride, seven of them.
- 2:34:17Speaker 11: There's four at Utah state. There's at least three, if
- 2:34:20Speaker 11: not more at BYU. And, We could talk about Arizona.
- 2:34:25Speaker 11: I mean, Ron McBride, who's turning 87 next month, has
- 2:34:31Speaker 11: this coaching tree that continues to pay dividends for all
- 2:34:35Speaker 11: of our local teams. And to your point, my man
- 2:34:39Speaker 11: flew over to our future home, the North Shore.
- 2:34:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 2:34:43Speaker 11: And discovered, along with some... But Ron was really a
- 2:34:47Speaker 11: pioneer this way to... To land in Oahu, go to
- 2:34:53Speaker 11: the North Shore and look around and be like, these
- 2:34:54Speaker 11: guys are built warriors. We need to get them playing football.
- 2:34:58Speaker 11: And American Samoa and all the islands, trendsetter, built the foundation.
- 2:35:04Speaker 11: Utah football is not where it's at today without Ron McBride.
- 2:35:08Speaker 2: One thing that is.
- 2:35:09Speaker 4: Not talked about enough with Urban, and look, Urban deserves
- 2:35:11Speaker 4: a massive amount of credit. one thing that is not
- 2:35:14Speaker 4: talked about enough with urban is that urban had a
- 2:35:16Speaker 4: 10 and two season and a 12 and O season with.
- 2:35:19Speaker 2: Guys that he inherited.
- 2:35:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:35:21Speaker 4: He did not like, it was not, Hey, I recruited
- 2:35:25Speaker 4: Alex Smith and that's why he's here. It's not Chris
- 2:35:28Speaker 4: came way out to was my dude. I got, I'm
- 2:35:30Speaker 4: the one who brought Tommy Hackenbrook and Spencer tune.
- 2:35:34Speaker 2: It was none of that.
- 2:35:35Speaker 4: It was like urban had a great eye for talent.
- 2:35:37Speaker 4: He knew that this roster was experienced. He knew that
- 2:35:39Speaker 4: the roster had some tools on it. He, he, took
- 2:35:42Speaker 4: the job and was just like, oh, wow.
- 2:35:44Speaker 2: Yeah. All right.
- 2:35:45Speaker 4: If I can tweak this scheme and I can get
- 2:35:48Speaker 4: these athletes who, again, he did not bring here. If
- 2:35:52Speaker 4: I can get these guys to run what I think
- 2:35:54Speaker 4: is the right kind of football. Now we're cooking with gas.
- 2:35:57Speaker 4: And that's, that's why some people felt like it was
- 2:36:00Speaker 4: such an injustice for Romney pride to be fired.
- 2:36:02Speaker 2: Cause he had a really great roster coming back.
- 2:36:04Speaker 4: He would have, maybe he wouldn't have gone 10 and
- 2:36:05Speaker 4: two 12 and oh, he would have gone 10 and two,
- 2:36:07Speaker 4: 10 and two, like with those players.
- 2:36:10Speaker 2: Right. And he, Yeah.
- 2:36:12Speaker 4: He urban that's, that's not part of the urban story enough. He'll,
- 2:36:17Speaker 4: when you ask him about it, he'll give credit to
- 2:36:20Speaker 4: Ron McBride and do that. But like when ESPN is
- 2:36:23Speaker 4: talking about, Oh my gosh, look what this guy did.
- 2:36:27Speaker 2: It's never like, by.
- 2:36:28Speaker 4: The way, this was pre-transfer portal era. This is not,
- 2:36:32Speaker 4: he brought in a bunch of true freshmen and played them.
- 2:36:35Speaker 4: It was like he had juniors and seniors who, on
- 2:36:38Speaker 4: an undefeated team that somebody else had recruited and developed
- 2:36:41Speaker 4: and given him as a finished product.
- 2:36:43Speaker 11: Yeah, and Coach Mack is such a classy guy, he's
- 2:36:45Speaker 11: not going to say anything about it now. But you
- 2:36:48Speaker 11: remember during that time, there were people that were on
- 2:36:51Speaker 11: Mack's side that were really mad at Chris Hill, really
- 2:36:53Speaker 11: mad at him.
- 2:36:55Speaker 2: And look, Dr. Hill, of course, made a decision that
- 2:36:58Speaker 2: worked out.
- 2:36:59Speaker 11: But there are so many people still to this day
- 2:37:01Speaker 11: that are very loyal to Coach McBride that were really
- 2:37:03Speaker 11: upset when that went down.
- 2:37:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:37:05Speaker 11: So I think you're good to always remember to bring
- 2:37:07Speaker 11: him up because we do get lost in this.
- 2:37:10Speaker 2: Urban changed everything. And he did. Created the must.
- 2:37:13Speaker 11: The student section once upon a time was like an
- 2:37:15Speaker 11: old lady in a hot tub and a bunch of
- 2:37:17Speaker 11: guys trying to hook up girls. It was not a
- 2:37:19Speaker 11: true student section. Creates the must. Starts referring to BYU
- 2:37:24Speaker 11: as the team down south.
- 2:37:25Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. Raised in a tried and true
- 2:37:28Speaker 2: BYU family.
- 2:37:29Speaker 10: I'm the oldest.
- 2:37:30Speaker 2: Of six.
- 2:37:31Speaker 11: All five of my siblings went to BYU. They all
- 2:37:34Speaker 11: married their partners. They met at BYU, the whole thing.
- 2:37:37Speaker 11: So I chose truth, as I like to say. My brother-in-law,
- 2:37:40Speaker 11: who is the biggest goob, dude, like he has a
- 2:37:43Speaker 11: T-shirt with his freaking Helaman Hall dorm number on it.
- 2:37:46Speaker 5: Sweet.
- 2:37:46Speaker 11: And he and his nerd BYU bros go to one
- 2:37:49Speaker 11: BYU road game a year. And we have fun with
- 2:37:51Speaker 11: the rivalry because I'm just completely devoid of emotion.
- 2:37:55Speaker 2: It's exhausting.
- 2:37:57Speaker 11: But to this day, if you ask him, well, who's
- 2:37:59Speaker 11: the one Utah player or coach that you can't stand?
- 2:38:02Speaker 11: Who's the one guy? He'll still say Irvin. Because of
- 2:38:06Speaker 11: those two years where he started referring to BYU as
- 2:38:09Speaker 11: the team down south, kicked their teeth in, and changed.
- 2:38:13Speaker 2: Utah football forever.
- 2:38:15Speaker 11: But it did start with Ron McBride and maybe even
- 2:38:17Speaker 11: some coaches and gentlemen before Coach Mack. But really, Mack
- 2:38:21Speaker 11: is the one that lifted the program back to credibility,
- 2:38:23Speaker 11: started competing and beating BYU. And again, seven coaches on
- 2:38:28Speaker 11: staff right now in 2026 owe their coaching career to
- 2:38:32Speaker 11: Ron McBride.
- 2:38:32Speaker 4: Including your head coach who played for Coach Mack and
- 2:38:35Speaker 4: loves Coach Mack and needs to do what Coach Mack
- 2:38:37Speaker 4: did and needs to get a win over BYU.
- 2:38:39Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:38:40Speaker 11: It's been 2,600 days, I think I saw, since Utah's
- 2:38:43Speaker 11: beaten BYU.
- 2:38:45Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:38:46Speaker 4: Three straights got in this year. Stay tuned for the drive.
- 2:38:49Speaker 4: Thanks for joining the show today. Everyone who participated, we'll
- 2:38:52Speaker 4: do it again tomorrow. ESPN, 792 on FM.
