- 7:20an apple pie. Now i'mna have to find me something sweet when we get

- 7:27ma'am. So I did not want to say your first name because I
- 7:31knew I was not gonna do a justice. So can you say your first
- 7:35name for us? Well, first of all, thank you for having me
- 7:39on your show tonight. My name is French Air Gardner. Like fresh Air,
- 7:46I'm French Air. I was gonna say that, but I was like,
- 7:49now you know, I have a friend, and I kept on saying
- 7:56l shit, lache, lache. I was butchering. His middle name is
- 7:59fair beautiful. But yeah, I'm notorious, so getting nag but I got
- 8:03Gardner right. Hey, Hey, so tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 8:11Okay, So again, my name is French Air Gardner. I am
- 8:15born and raised here in Dallas, Texas. Spent almost ten years in Saint
- 8:20Louis, Missouri becoming an entrepreneur. Really have experienced a lot of trauma over
- 8:26the years and in my life as a whole. My father molested me when
- 8:33I was a child, which led to promiscuity and all that different things that
- 8:39comes from that sort of trauma. And then I've also experienced domestic violence and
- 8:48just so much homelessness and just so much I've I've over had to overcome.
- 8:52I have bipolar depression, I deal with anxiety. I have adhd uh PTSD.
- 9:01So it's just a lot going on. But beyond that, I am
- 9:05an artist. I love to, uh, you know, create and I
- 9:13like to to bring things from nothing to something and so that's what I've been
- 9:18doing. For the last five years. I started writing and most of my
- 9:24first children's book, Mommy and Daddy, Do You Still Love Me Anymore?
- 9:28Which is an ebook available on Amazon only. And then two years later I
- 9:35collaborated with my good friend Dell Chambers. She illustrated the second edition of the
- 9:41edited version of the first book, Mommy and Daddy Do You Still Love Me
- 9:45Anymore? Thank you? So yes. So I've just been you know,
- 9:50creating, writing. I'm a visual artists. I paint and do that for
- 9:58art therapy to heal from the trauma I've experience. And lastly, I have
- 10:03a podcast like you and it's called a News you can use podcasts, and
- 10:09it promotes black business owners and artists. So that's me in a nutshell.
- 10:15I love that you are all over the board, you got your hands and
- 10:18all kinds of things. Yeah, so we connected because the children's books week.
- 10:24Okay, I am a librarian and I have a nine year old,
- 10:28and there was a very vast difference between when my son who was twenty one
- 10:35and we were reading books together and my nine year old. Because when my
- 10:39son was twenty one, and I tell everybody, the books were about adult
- 10:45or a little white kid, you know, there was no books that represent
- 10:48them. And I was playing around on the computer and I saw this black
- 10:54children's book. We gonna like stop playing And the diversity of the books in
- 11:00the subject it is beautiful. So you are going to be a part of
- 11:05I think we're doing August. It's going to be all about children's books.
- 11:11So what made you want to become a children's book author? Good question.
- 11:16I didn't. I did not have a desire to be any kind of author.
- 11:24I had a vivid dream. To give you context on the story,
- 11:30my husband and I we had four children, Joseph Junior, French Air two
- 11:35malkeys that can survived, two boys, two girls, and due to circumstances,
- 11:39CPS took them from us and they were eventually adopted by another family in
- 11:48twenty fourteen, and so that was the last time I had seen my children.
- 11:52And so in December of twenty nineteen, I had a vivid dream and
- 12:01in that dream, uh, it was the my peer was telling me that
- 12:07I needed to do more to let my children know that I love them,
- 12:11or to let them know that I care. So that was the precipice and
- 12:16the catalyst for me writing the book. The next day, I wrote the
- 12:18book and published it in the in the same thing, Wow, my god,
- 12:26I don't want to see this, but I'm one of Wow, what
- 12:33if they read it? How would you? How does it make you feel
- 12:37to know that one of those copies might have gotten in the hands of your
- 12:39child. Your volume went out? Can you hear me? Okay, So
- 13:03we might have to drop her down and then bring her back up, because
- 13:09when you get a phone call, it'll kind of push it away. So
- 13:11go ahead, drop down and come back. So in August, you guys,
- 13:18we will be featuring African American authors for Children's Books Week, the study
- 13:24of the let's just say our kids don't read. We're gonna be totally honest.
- 13:35Me working at a public library. I see African American children come and
- 13:39they go straight to the computers. I rarely see them come and grab a
- 13:43book. But you had their counterparts who will grab books, who parents would
- 13:50make them grab books to ensure the knowledge. So my daughter, for the
- 13:54whole month of February had to read books. Every single book. Book was
- 14:00pertaining to African American history, every single book. So some parents might have
- 14:09thought I was being hard, but I went to her school and actually read
- 14:15a book. Her teacher came up to me and said, I don't know
- 14:18what you're doing. But we had another parent coming here and they read a
- 14:22book. And the book was about Brianna Taylor. Your daughter stood up and
- 14:28told us everything about Brianna Taylor. We asked her, how did you know
- 14:33this in for me? She said, my mama read it to me in
- 14:35the book. You guys cannot imagine the biggest smile that I had on my
- 14:41face. Okay, so August, we are dedicating back to school, back
- 14:48to reading. Okay, so all right, she's back. All right,
- 14:54you did baby, Yes, I'm sorry, Right, you're fine. So
- 15:01how how would it feel to think or how does it feel to think that
- 15:09your kids might have read your book. Powerful it's it's for them, it's
- 15:13a love letter to them, and and it's it's really you know, a
- 15:18dream, you know, for them to read it, because I want them
- 15:22to know that I love them, you know, I care for them,
- 15:26that I'm still thinking about them. And that's what that's what the whole message
- 15:28of it is about, not only to my own personal children, but to
- 15:33any child's adults, you know, who've experienced a foster care or adoption systems,
- 15:39to remind them that their biological parents still love them, still care for
- 15:43them, to think about them. So it gives me gives me great hope.
- 15:46And that's something that these kids would need to hear because sometimes I feel
- 15:50that if they're in the system, the system doesn't let them know that,
- 15:52you know what, we parents were human. We make mistakes, okay,
- 15:58and let us be able to carea correct the mistakes. And that's why I
- 16:03think the system doesn't show that opposite side of the correct thing of the mistake.
- 16:07So I applaud you for being able to do that. I really do.
- 16:11And I knew, I knew it was hard to do, but the
- 16:15fact that you did it, so you're affecting your life, your kid's life,
- 16:21and all other kids, those in and out of the system, because
- 16:25there are kids who moms or dad are really not in the situation, not
- 16:30in their lives, and they might be thinking the same thing. Now,
- 16:37you also have some adult inspirational books. Can you tell me a little bit
- 16:41about those? Yes. So, after I wrote my children's book and published
- 16:48it in the second edition, I jumped on an on a collaboration book project
- 16:59with Vanessa Blackwell, doctor Vanessa Blackwell. Now and the theme and the title
- 17:06of the subject, the title of the book. It's called Finding Joy in
- 17:10the Journey, Volume two, And yes, it really resonated with me.
- 17:18The subject really resonated with me, Patrice, because with with what I go
- 17:22through with the depression and anxiety, it really it really messes with me.
- 17:26So I'm always trying to find ways to find joy during difficult times. It's
- 17:32like I'm always going through some kind of difficult time. So that that really
- 17:36resonated with me. Yes, I'm telling you, and I understand that because
- 17:42the past two weeks, if you only knew, yes, I understand that
- 17:51seems like you can be on this high of life just going up and next
- 17:56minute that curveball is right there week for you to swing around. So yes,
- 18:02yes, So what would you say to someone that is still grieving but
- 18:14the grief is not fresh? How would you give them advice in what to
- 18:22do? I would say, I always feel your feelings. Don't deny like
- 18:29any of your feelings that you're feeling, even though it's been some time that
- 18:33you've been grieving. I think that grieving is definitely our process and there's different
- 18:40steps of it, and so I would say, hey, maybe you might
- 18:45want to talk to a counselor our therapists. You might want to tap into
- 18:49that. I always believe in the professional services because I've been going to a
- 18:56counselor our therapist since I was about twenty two years old, so there's almost
- 18:59twenty years, and I really see value in them. I would also say
- 19:06journal Journaling helps to process your thoughts and your emotions. Another thing I would
- 19:12say is to meditate. Meditating is really a powerful thing when you tap into
- 19:22the stillness of your mind, tapping into being present, and so there's a
- 19:27lot of power in that. And then I would lastly say, just to
- 19:32tap into and this is kind of random and it has nothing to do with
- 19:34really with grief, but just with life. Just tap into being grateful and
- 19:38having gratitude. Yes, yes, yes, I have a purple gratitude journal
- 19:45that is right next to my bed. I got the gratitude journal. Put
- 19:48you off, my kids, put off my friend. It's all right there
- 19:55next to my bed. So once I get up in the morning, it's
- 19:57first saying I say, oh God, is thank you you? And I
- 20:02looked at my side and like, all right, crew, we're gonna make
- 20:03this do it to do. But you guys, we're gonna take a break
- 20:07real quick, and we're gonna come back and we're gonna talk to miss Gardener
- 20:11a little bit more. And Miss Gardener, the second half of my show
- 20:14is the fun part of my show. So we're about to have us some
- 20:17fun. Okay, Okay, I'm looking forward to it. You guys come
- 20:22back in a little while. Okay, Wait a second, Dallas, what
- 20:47work A A L A C. The Chance of Your Dream Book Tour in
- 20:52ex Fo is coming to your area. Mark your calendars. May eighteen,

- 21:11teaching on branding, marketing, and network I want you to plan to be
- 21:18in the building to be educated and power in in church, come out,
- 21:22support and we are da Miss Gardener. I have to tell you you have
- 21:30a very beautiful smile. Oh thank you so much. Like I'm looking at
- 21:34your smile and everything you said you've gone through, I would have never seen
- 21:40it. With that beautiful smile, it is like lightening up your whole face.
- 21:44It's like cheek the cheek like here it is so on the second half
- 21:48of the show, we have fun thank you, ask crazy quirky questions that
- 21:52doesn't have to do with the books, that doesn't have to do well,
- 21:56yeah, does have a little bit to do with the author. But we
- 21:59want every wanting to see you and be like, oh she's cool, or
- 22:03like oh my god, how can I follow her? So? What's your
- 22:10favorite cartoon? Good question. Favorite cartoon I would say at this time of
- 22:18life will be South Park. You know, I've never looked at that show.
- 22:22I've looked at South I mean I'm still sitting up there looking at the
- 22:26flintstones, you know, what I'm saying. Okay, So yeah, South
- 22:38Park. The closest I would get to South Park might have been renting Stimpy.
- 22:45Okay, so you remember renting Simpy, I do? That was the
- 22:49cartoon back in the day. So oh, Latonia said, she watches South
- 22:55Park. Well, I'm gonna have to look at a couple of episodes,
- 22:56you know what I'm saying. So you are relaxing, and you can't just
- 23:06read any book, any author, any TV show. What would you do?
- 23:12So I'm relaxing. I'm watching All Queens Men on Amazon Prime, so
- 23:21that Power on stars me. I'm reading this book called this other book that
- 23:32I'm reading and it's taking me a while to get through it. But it's
- 23:36called Ritual Power, Healing and Community and it's by Maladoma Petris so Main.
- 23:45So that's what I'm reading currently. Oh I love the cover. Oh my
- 23:49god. Oh man, see, I'm a cover girl. I love cover
- 23:56of books if the book is beautiful, which that golden butterfly on you guys'
- 24:03book cover is beautiful. So that already tracked me to the book. Now
- 24:08you're talking about you like power. You are my friend, You're my friend.
- 24:15Okay, I'm excited that they're gonna go back and do when Tommy and
- 24:22Ghosts were in the years bring it and yes, And then you told me,
- 24:30you like all the Queen's men, we're gonna hang out with me and
- 24:33you're gonna have to hang out together. One day. We can hang out
- 24:37by zon, we'll do a little work and then we'll catch an episode of
- 24:41each one. How about that? I like that? All right, we
- 24:45gotta do that. So you have you were in the military. What means
- 24:49you want to go in the military. No, not me. You weren't
- 24:55in the military. So my father was your father was? Okay, okay,
- 24:59okay. So did you ever think you would if you could, would
- 25:04you have gone in the military. I actually just full transparent moment. I
- 25:10like ran away from my kid Like when I first had my first my first
- 25:15child, and I was married, I ran away from them, trying to
- 25:18get away from all the responsibilities to go into the army. And I actually
- 25:25took the ASVAB I because I have a degree two degrees actually back from arts
- 25:32and so I would have came in into the military as an officer and with
- 25:37my ASVAB score, I was going to test out to be in the Intelligence
- 25:42Department, but I had I had been doing too much smoking, so they
- 25:49told me I had to come back in three weeks or so after I had
- 25:52detox. But I never made it back three weeks to dig docs, you
- 25:59know, two weeks ago? Yeap, Oh my goodness. Okay, okay,
- 26:03okay. So you are now at this beautiful place of life that I
- 26:10see that you are that emerging butterfly. What's the one thing that help you
- 26:15get to where you are right now? My children are my inspiration. Really
- 26:22knowing that even though they're not we're not we're I'm not present in their life,
- 26:27I feel like I'm still an example for them. And my goal is
- 26:33to really do all the things that I feel is part of my purpose and
- 26:41my passions and my goals and and be very intentional in that and that and
- 26:47doing so hoping that when they get older and you know, they come across
- 26:52you know, me and my life and my experiences and what I've accomplished in
- 26:56life, they'll say, oh, well, maybe I should go ahead and
- 27:00go ahead and go forth and do whatever it is that I feel like I
- 27:04should do. And I really want them to lead with their hearts. And
- 27:08so that's that's that's my they're my passions and my and my motivation. That
- 27:15is beautiful. Oh my god, you got to be right here, you
- 27:21got me right here. Well, I want to thank you for joining me
- 27:26tonight and I hope to see you in Dallas when we come down there.
