Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: My name is Matt Young and I play in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: band King Parrot do the vocals and yeah that's me weir,
- 0:20Speaker 1: thanks so much.
- 0:21Speaker 2: After smashing out a thirty three date tour across Europe
- 0:24Speaker 2: and the UK with Pantera and Power Trip, how did
- 0:26Speaker 2: that experience shape and or energize the band coming into the.
- 0:30Speaker 1: New record Well, I mean, I guess initially it was energizing,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but by the end of it we.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Were pretty pretty well naked.
- 0:42Speaker 1: I reckon, I don't know, it just seemed like at
- 0:44Speaker 1: the end of this one, it just sort of the
- 0:46Speaker 1: jet lag and the exhaustion from playing so many shows
- 0:51Speaker 1: was was.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Intense.
- 0:55Speaker 1: It was crazy, but we had the best time. It
- 0:58Speaker 1: was an amazing experience. It's you know, just one of
- 1:02Speaker 1: those things that you're just kind of you have to
- 1:05Speaker 1: pinch yourself sometimes and just goes it's really.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Happening, you know. It was crazy. It was so awesome, and.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yeah, sort of you know, we've had had a month
- 1:15Speaker 1: or so off now and just getting back into doing
- 1:18Speaker 1: some Aussie shows and and there the records out and
- 1:21Speaker 1: you know a week or so, a bit over a week,
- 1:23Speaker 1: so it's exciting time for the band.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely crazy. Hey, do you remember your like the
- 1:29Speaker 2: first King Parrots show and like to see where you
- 1:32Speaker 2: guys are now? Is it crazy for you?
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, Like I think we've done We've done things that
- 1:40Speaker 3: we never even would have pitched.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, we've done things that we never would
- 1:46Speaker 1: have even thought were possible.
- 1:48Speaker 3: And that's been just such a crazy experience. Even even
- 1:55Speaker 3: in the first.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Few years, we did things that we'd never even thought
- 1:58Speaker 1: were possible, and it just seems to keep rolling on.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And one of the things, one of the things I'm
- 2:05Speaker 1: most kind of proud of, is we've been sort of
- 2:06Speaker 1: really uncompromising with the music and we've stayed very true
- 2:10Speaker 1: to our roots and stayed like I think our new
- 2:14Speaker 1: records easily the most extreme thing we've done. So it's
- 2:18Speaker 1: great in the sense that we can, you know, just
- 2:23Speaker 1: say that we've done that. You know, we've we've stuck
- 2:25Speaker 1: true to our roots and gotten heavier.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Really yeah, well, and it's definitely paid off. Was there
- 2:31Speaker 2: a moment in your career with the band that you're like,
- 2:34Speaker 2: holy shit, we've made it.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Well, I mean it's like, I don't know to find
- 2:42Speaker 1: made it, you know, I don't know what it is.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I don't know what that. I don't know what that
- 2:46Speaker 3: means really, but.
- 2:48Speaker 1: What I mean, I'm just grateful for the fact that
- 2:52Speaker 1: we get to do this, and we get to do
- 2:54Speaker 1: it regularly, and that people care and people seem to
- 2:58Speaker 1: enjoy the shows.
- 2:59Speaker 3: And you know, the.
- 3:01Speaker 1: New record and all the singles and videos stuff that
- 3:04Speaker 1: we've released so far has been really well received. And
- 3:09Speaker 1: and you know, we've got I just got the routing
- 3:12Speaker 1: for our We've got this massive North American tour coming
- 3:15Speaker 1: up at at the end of July, and I just
- 3:18Speaker 1: got the final routing for it, all close to the
- 3:20Speaker 1: final routing, and there's like fifty shows and I'm like,
- 3:24Speaker 1: holy shit, what do you.
- 3:27Speaker 2: What do you guys do like for your downtime to
- 3:30Speaker 2: fully like unwind in between shows? Do you get to
- 3:33Speaker 2: do that or.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Like while we're on tour or when we get home
- 3:38Speaker 1: from tour.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Yeah, when you're on tour, do you have downtime at all?
- 3:42Speaker 1: Well, it's not looking like we're gonna have much downtime
- 3:45Speaker 1: on this next one.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Crap.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like I think there's one day. It looks
- 3:50Speaker 3: like there's one day off.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You know, we might be able to sneak a couple
- 3:53Speaker 1: we might be able to sneak off like another day
- 3:55Speaker 1: or two off here or there. But at this point
- 3:59Speaker 1: in it's looking like it's looking like we are plan
- 4:06Speaker 1: pretty much every day. But you know, like if we're
- 4:10Speaker 1: near something, you know, like we've seen cool stuff like
- 4:13Speaker 1: in the when we've toured in North America. You know,
- 4:15Speaker 1: we've been a neighbor Falls a whole bunch of times
- 4:18Speaker 1: and done stuff like that. We've been to the Grand Canyon,
- 4:22Speaker 1: We've We've seen so much stuff over the years. And
- 4:26Speaker 1: but I think generally when we when we get a
- 4:28Speaker 1: day off, we just like to maybe try and like
- 4:30Speaker 1: invest in a nice hotel with nice comfortable beds in
- 4:33Speaker 1: a pool or a spa or a gym or something
- 4:35Speaker 1: like that, so we can just sort of just chill
- 4:38Speaker 1: out mostly and have some good food. That's that's the
- 4:40Speaker 1: most important thing. A good night's sleep's always probably the
- 4:44Speaker 1: most important thing.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, one hundred percent said that you do seek that
- 4:48Speaker 2: out when you can get it and use it, you deserve.
- 4:51Speaker 3: It, totally, right, totally.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it can be few and far between, but
- 4:58Speaker 1: you know, now we kind of we try and tour
- 5:00Speaker 1: in vehicles like that we can sleep in with, so
- 5:04Speaker 1: you know, that's that's that's helpful. You kind of get
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's sort of a little annoying at the start to
- 5:09Speaker 1: get used to trying to sleep in that kind of
- 5:11Speaker 1: thing because you're bouncing down the highway, But once you
- 5:14Speaker 1: get after a few nights, you get used to it.
- 5:16Speaker 2: You know, Yeah, yeah, awesome. And can you talk us
- 5:19Speaker 2: through the emotions behind the recent track Get what You're
- 5:23Speaker 2: Given and what it was like to record it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Yeah, So that song is like, you know, it's a
- 5:30Speaker 1: bit of a tribute to friends that passed and one
- 5:34Speaker 1: friend of ours in particular, Boyd Sinnet, who who was
- 5:39Speaker 1: our you know, he's like the sixth member of the band.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You know, he did a lot of our artwork. He
- 5:44Speaker 1: did a lot of our designs for our album covers.
- 5:51Speaker 1: He did like two of the album covers, and he
- 5:53Speaker 1: did the two EPs that we've released. And he's in
- 5:57Speaker 1: our music videos. He's a collaborator on the music videos.
- 6:00Speaker 1: He's always hopping out and you know, he tragically passed
- 6:05Speaker 1: a couple of years ago now. And you know, like
- 6:09Speaker 1: I wouldn't say like any of our songs are about
- 6:11Speaker 1: any like it's hard to sort of go Our songs
- 6:15Speaker 1: are just particularly about one thing. You know, there's always
- 6:18Speaker 1: different I think there's always different things that sort of
- 6:23Speaker 1: get put into the lyrics or different circumstances or things
- 6:28Speaker 1: like that that I'll insert into lyrics, so it's sort
- 6:32Speaker 1: of doesn't make them about one certain thing. But yeah,
- 6:38Speaker 1: that song is definitely about grief and the grieving process
- 6:41Speaker 1: and just trying to trying to work through that sort
- 6:45Speaker 1: of stuff. I mean, I don't really writing songs and
- 6:49Speaker 1: performing them live is a great way to process that
- 6:52Speaker 1: stuff from my perspective, and it's like it's almost a
- 6:54Speaker 1: therapeutic thing for me getting on stage screaming my ass
- 6:59Speaker 1: off and singing these songs. And one of the funny things,
- 7:01Speaker 1: like he's even singing songs that we wrote like seven, eight, nine,
- 7:07Speaker 1: ten years ago, whatever it is, and they kind of
- 7:09Speaker 1: sometimes they seem to take on there another meaning or
- 7:11Speaker 1: a different meaning. And you know, there's definitely a few
- 7:16Speaker 1: songs that we've done in the past that I kind
- 7:19Speaker 1: of like, I'm like, wow, like that mean that song
- 7:21Speaker 1: means something completely different to me now than when I
- 7:23Speaker 1: wrote it, and even the lyrics mean something different. So yeah,
- 7:26Speaker 1: it's kind of interesting to see how things change over
- 7:29Speaker 1: the years.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, that's crazy. I never really thought about it that way,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and it must be so true. As an artist a songwriter,
- 7:38Speaker 2: you know, you're writing something a song in a frame
- 7:41Speaker 2: of mind at the time, and then when you go
- 7:43Speaker 2: to revisit them, as you said, they can have completely
- 7:46Speaker 2: different meanings for you at that time.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Totally, totally, totally.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Does you know.
- 7:51Speaker 1: There's there's one song that we play there's always been
- 7:54Speaker 1: in our set things.
- 7:55Speaker 3: We wrote it.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's called Disgrace Yourself. And yeah, the meaning of that
- 7:58Speaker 1: song when I wrote it compared to what it meant now.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It was like I was just singing in at rehearsal
- 8:03Speaker 1: the other day and I was just thinking, Gee, this
- 8:05Speaker 1: the whole all the lyrics and everything that it is
- 8:09Speaker 1: is something totally different to what it was when I
- 8:11Speaker 1: wrote it. And that's that's great, you know.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, interesting. Yeah, And a young Person's Guy to
- 8:18Speaker 2: King Parrot is your first full length album in five years?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Why is now the right time to unleash the Beast?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Well, I guess, I mean we just didn't want to
- 8:26Speaker 1: wait any longer, really, I guess.
- 8:31Speaker 4: You know.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We've we worked hard on the record most of the
- 8:34Speaker 1: last year. We kind of got the writing done the
- 8:38Speaker 1: pre production and all that sort of stuff, and it
- 8:40Speaker 1: took some time to mix it. You know, we probably
- 8:42Speaker 1: spent you know, maybe up to six months mixing it
- 8:46Speaker 1: and just you know, mixing it, taking it away, going
- 8:50Speaker 1: back listening again, changing a few things, trying to get
- 8:54Speaker 1: the right guitar times, trying to get the right vocal drum.
- 8:57Speaker 3: You know, all that ship, you know, all.
- 8:59Speaker 1: All that luring ship that you probably don't want to
- 9:00Speaker 1: hear about, you know, but it's all the nuances, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 1: all that little all those little things that most people
- 9:10Speaker 1: probably wouldn't even notice, but it's when you're sort of
- 9:12Speaker 1: looking at everything under a magnifying glass, you kind of
- 9:14Speaker 1: got to pay a lot of.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Attention to it.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And you know, obviously, yeah, we didn't want to wait
- 9:19Speaker 1: any longer to put out a new record. So here
- 9:24Speaker 1: it is. You know, we've done a few singles, a
- 9:26Speaker 1: few videos, and it's it's uh, you know, we we're
- 9:32Speaker 1: going to be touring right over the top of when
- 9:34Speaker 1: it comes out, so doing doing lots of shows around
- 9:38Speaker 1: Australia on the weekends and then and then after it's
- 9:41Speaker 1: sort of been out for a month or so, we'll
- 9:43Speaker 1: be in the in North America doing doing fifty shows
- 9:46Speaker 1: over there, twenty with Pantera and them on a Marth and.
- 9:50Speaker 3: A bunch of headliners we're doing it.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I just found out we're doing a bunch of shows
- 9:53Speaker 1: with Weed Eater as well, who were our old friends
- 9:56Speaker 1: and we've toured with quite a lot over the years.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And we're doing a whole bunch of headlining shows that
- 10:03Speaker 1: We've got a couple of bands, like a band called
- 10:06Speaker 1: Squid Pisser who have members of Guy and which is
- 10:11Speaker 1: really cool. Another band called Bong Andada who we've actually
- 10:16Speaker 1: played with North America before and they're really cool.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Du is the young band and.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I really like them and I really like what they do.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And yeah, it's gonna be great to be able to
- 10:27Speaker 1: get out there and we're playing. You know, the whole
- 10:30Speaker 1: tour is sort of based around us doing the shows
- 10:33Speaker 1: with Pantera and Mahama, but they don't play every day,
- 10:37Speaker 1: so we will be playing every day, and you know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: pretty much we might try and sneak a couple more
- 10:44Speaker 1: days off in there, but as it stands.
- 10:46Speaker 3: And what I'm looking at with our list there, it's
- 10:48Speaker 3: like fifty shows.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So that's insane. That is so insane. Is it. It
- 10:54Speaker 2: must be nerve racking for you guys doing that many
- 10:57Speaker 2: shows or are you guys all sort of like, yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Well, just knowing what the thirty show, the thirty shows
- 11:06Speaker 1: in Europe did to us, Like yeah, now title was,
- 11:08Speaker 1: I'm like, this is pretty ectic. But it's fine, you know, like,
- 11:16Speaker 1: how can I complain? You know, like, this is what
- 11:18Speaker 1: we love to do, this is what we this is
- 11:21Speaker 1: what we signed up for. And just the fact that
- 11:24Speaker 1: there's fifty promoters out there that are willing to have
- 11:28Speaker 1: our band perform uh throughout America, to me is mind blowing.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That's insane. So I'm just incredibly grateful for that opportunity
- 11:40Speaker 1: in itself. That's it's nuts.
- 11:42Speaker 2: It is insane. And you know what, especially for an
- 11:45Speaker 2: Aussie band as well, I feel like it is harder
- 11:48Speaker 2: for Ossie bands to gain international success. You guys have
- 11:52Speaker 2: done that. Do you have any advice or do you
- 11:56Speaker 2: know why you guys have been so successful overseas for
- 12:00Speaker 2: or do you have any advice for any Aussie bands,
- 12:02Speaker 2: I should say, looking to break into that market.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I guess it's one of those things that
- 12:07Speaker 1: you just got to really be trying try and be
- 12:09Speaker 1: true to yourself and do what do what's uniquely you.
- 12:15Speaker 1: I mean when you get over the places like America
- 12:18Speaker 1: and Europe and stuff, and you see how many bands
- 12:21Speaker 1: are over there, like it's insane. It is insane, the
- 12:25Speaker 1: amount of bands and the different scenes and all that
- 12:27Speaker 1: sort of stuff like that.
- 12:29Speaker 3: In America, it's it's nuts.
- 12:31Speaker 1: So and then you think about how many bands are
- 12:35Speaker 1: in Australia that are trying to break out of Australia too.
- 12:37Speaker 1: There's so many, and so you've really got to do
- 12:39Speaker 1: something different. You've got to be able to sort of
- 12:41Speaker 1: stand out, and you've got to be able to put
- 12:43Speaker 1: on a live show that people want to see, and
- 12:46Speaker 1: you've also got to have the songs that people want
- 12:48Speaker 1: to hear.
- 12:49Speaker 3: And to get.
- 12:50Speaker 1: All of those chuck all those things in the melting
- 12:53Speaker 1: pot and to try and get it right. It can
- 12:56Speaker 1: be really tricky, and you know, you could just be
- 13:01Speaker 1: slightly off on one thing and it won't won't translate well.
- 13:05Speaker 1: And I think the originality thing is the most important thing.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I mean, when you're looking at genres like grindcore or
- 13:13Speaker 1: thrash metal or death metal, like it's so very easy
- 13:18Speaker 1: just to be generic, you know, and fall into that
- 13:23Speaker 1: sort of generic kind of category, I guess, and you've
- 13:27Speaker 1: got to have something that stands out, you've got to
- 13:29Speaker 1: do something different. For us, I think we've been blessed
- 13:34Speaker 1: in the sense that we've always had our own kind
- 13:36Speaker 1: of sound with the songwriting and with the vocals and
- 13:42Speaker 1: the way that it's and the way that we kind
- 13:43Speaker 1: of bounce between super high intensity and then like super
- 13:47Speaker 1: like kind of groovy parts. That's been something that we've
- 13:52Speaker 1: done well, I think, and that sort of helps set
- 13:56Speaker 1: us apart. So then we've had the music videos, which
- 14:00Speaker 1: have been a real bonus for us, where we've done
- 14:02Speaker 1: like ridiculous music videos and people have kind of latched
- 14:05Speaker 1: onto that, and then our live show as well, Like
- 14:09Speaker 1: I feel like that's where we kind of do our
- 14:11Speaker 1: best work. So we've been lucky in that regard. But
- 14:15Speaker 1: I know it's not that and it hasn't been easy.
- 14:17Speaker 1: We've worked incredibly hard at all of those things, so
- 14:22Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, getting elements, all those elements together,
- 14:28Speaker 1: it is kind of challenging, but it's if you really
- 14:31Speaker 1: want it and you really want to do it, then
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, you apply yourself and you just keep trying
- 14:35Speaker 1: and getting better and doing better work and hopefully the
- 14:40Speaker 1: ducks line up and people did it and the where
- 14:44Speaker 1: you go. But yeah, it's certainly it's not for the
- 14:47Speaker 1: faint heart, and that definitely.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And it's like you can't just rely on one thing,
- 14:52Speaker 2: like say, great live performances. You can't just rely on that.
- 14:55Speaker 2: It's all going to be sort of everything coming.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Together totally right and that and that willingness, and they're
- 15:01Speaker 1: wanting to improve all the time. Yeah, I want to
- 15:06Speaker 1: get better. I want to be a better vocalist. Our
- 15:08Speaker 1: band wants to get better all the time. And that's
- 15:10Speaker 1: that's something that we've you know, said about doing. And
- 15:14Speaker 1: I believe that, you know, on this new record you
- 15:16Speaker 1: can see that. And we're already thinking about the next one.
- 15:19Speaker 1: So yeah, now that COVID's done and all that ship
- 15:22Speaker 1: and we can tour again and play and yeah, I
- 15:25Speaker 1: just want to keep going.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Yeah, wicked, that was going to be one of my
- 15:29Speaker 2: questions later after this album. Is there more So I'm
- 15:31Speaker 2: glad that you answered that.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Yeah, we're talking about doing you know, we've got we've
- 15:36Speaker 1: been there's been some talk about doing like a cover
- 15:38Speaker 1: ZP or something like that. We really like that have
- 15:42Speaker 1: influenced us. So we've definitely been talking about that.
- 15:46Speaker 3: And then.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Yeah, like we're starting to you know, we've we've started
- 15:52Speaker 1: writing riffs already for the next record.
- 15:54Speaker 3: So yeah, that's that's already underway.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Wicked And talking a little bit more about your influencers.
- 16:00Speaker 2: What about for you? Who are some of you? I
- 16:01Speaker 2: know you've probably been asked this a million times. I'm sorry,
- 16:03Speaker 2: but who are some of your influences?
- 16:06Speaker 3: Well, I mean.
- 16:09Speaker 1: When you go back to when I look back throughout
- 16:14Speaker 1: the whole, like just going over the years. Early on,
- 16:20Speaker 1: I would say all the you know, Bond, Scott, Brian Johnson,
- 16:25Speaker 1: Ozzie Osborn, all of that stuff is they're all you know,
- 16:30Speaker 1: Rob Halford, all of that stuff. And then getting further
- 16:33Speaker 1: along the track as I got into like heavier stuff,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'd be lying if I didn't say, like bands like
- 16:40Speaker 1: Guns and Roses and Motley Cruze weren't an influence when
- 16:42Speaker 1: I was much younger, but I kind of moved.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Onto that.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Then you know, you know, Slayer, Sepal Tour, Pantera and
- 16:52Speaker 1: then he and then getting into like once you sort
- 16:55Speaker 1: of get once I you know, you know, found Metallica,
- 16:58Speaker 1: then got into Slayer and Sebal Tour Pair Terror when
- 17:00Speaker 1: I was younger. That kind of opened the doors to
- 17:03Speaker 1: all the death metal stuff. So then I was like Obituary,
- 17:06Speaker 1: Cannibal Corps, d Side, all that stuff, and then getting
- 17:11Speaker 1: into that, and then I'm starting to become more familiar
- 17:14Speaker 1: with the Australian scene. In the nineties, it was bands
- 17:17Speaker 1: like Damage, Bean Flippers, used to Execution, Blood Duster, Bremla
- 17:21Speaker 1: and Alchemists, all those christ bait bands like that that
- 17:26Speaker 1: had a big influence on me.
- 17:30Speaker 3: As I was sort of.
- 17:31Speaker 1: Started playing in bands and getting down in Melbourne and
- 17:36Speaker 1: doing all that stuff. I was heavily influenced by the
- 17:39Speaker 1: Australian scene. Dread Nought were a big influence on me
- 17:42Speaker 1: early early days as well. And I mean now the
- 17:46Speaker 1: old bass player from Dreadnought Squizz is the guitarist thinking Parrots.
- 17:49Speaker 1: So that's but I mean, I'm into everything from like
- 17:54Speaker 1: hardcore punk stuff, punk rock, black metal, death metal, grindcore. Obviously,
- 18:00Speaker 1: I love stone of rock stuff. I love bands like Clutch,
- 18:04Speaker 1: one of my favorites. I listened to everything. I'm not
- 18:07Speaker 1: sort of I'm not tom I'm an open book and
- 18:13Speaker 1: I like to I'd like to be influenced by lots
- 18:17Speaker 1: of different stuff. You know, I've been I'll be with
- 18:20Speaker 1: Acid Bath reforming. I've been listening to that again and
- 18:24Speaker 1: we're actually playing a show, like our first show on
- 18:27Speaker 1: this US tour is.
- 18:28Speaker 3: Going to be with Acid Bath and Pentagram for foxs
- 18:30Speaker 3: sakes in New York.
- 18:32Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:33Speaker 2: So I saw that crazy.
- 18:37Speaker 3: It's insane, you know.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I was just sort of looking at the dates and thinking, know,
- 18:41Speaker 1: when we're on tour with Pantera over there, maybe I'll
- 18:43Speaker 1: be able to see Acid Bath.
- 18:45Speaker 3: And then I saw that show that they had in
- 18:47Speaker 3: New York and it only had one support on it.
- 18:50Speaker 3: So I asked the question.
- 18:53Speaker 1: With our booking agent, and the next thing I know,
- 18:56Speaker 1: we were on the show.
- 18:57Speaker 2: So I'm like, Wow, that's amazing, and isn't it funny?
- 19:02Speaker 2: Just going back to your point about like the music
- 19:04Speaker 2: you grew up on was pretty heavily American influence or
- 19:09Speaker 2: you know, influence from the UK as well. I had
- 19:12Speaker 2: this growing up. I don't know if you did, but
- 19:14Speaker 2: I started out listening to, you know, all the bigger
- 19:17Speaker 2: metal bands that everyone knows, and then I started discovering
- 19:20Speaker 2: the Australian metal bands and I was like holy shit,
- 19:23Speaker 2: we've got some good bands here.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Like, yeah, totally, totally. Yeah, I've ever nursed in that.
- 19:31Speaker 1: When I was like when I was probably about fourteen
- 19:33Speaker 1: or fifteen years old, I started.
- 19:35Speaker 3: You know, this is a long time ago.
- 19:39Speaker 1: You know, I was writing letters to bands like I was,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know in snail male kind of tape trading and
- 19:45Speaker 1: doing all that, getting cassettes and T shirts and all
- 19:48Speaker 1: that sort of stuff. Just taking a risk on bands,
- 19:51Speaker 1: you know, like getting mail order catalogs and fanzines and
- 19:55Speaker 1: things like that where they would put addresses or po
- 19:58Speaker 1: boxes in there, right letters to bands. I've still got
- 20:01Speaker 1: like a folder somewhere with all the letters that I
- 20:04Speaker 1: used to write to all band members and stuff.
- 20:06Speaker 2: So awesome. Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I was very committed to it all when I
- 20:11Speaker 1: was younger, for sure.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. And you've got a mix of intimate
- 20:17Speaker 2: Aussie venues at massive international stages coming up. Do you
- 20:21Speaker 2: prefer one over the other?
- 20:24Speaker 1: Well, yeah, I mean it's yeah, it's too sept I
- 20:30Speaker 1: like both. I don't prefer one over the other. I
- 20:32Speaker 1: just I like the experience of being able to do both.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Sometimes.
- 20:36Speaker 1: I guess when you're playing those bigger places, you kind
- 20:39Speaker 1: of get into this sort of groove with it, I guess,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and it's it's very comfortable.
- 20:46Speaker 3: You've got so much room to.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Move and you've got you know, you can hear everything
- 20:52Speaker 1: really well. You're using these amazing PA systems, state of
- 20:55Speaker 1: the art gear and all that, and then you know,
- 21:00Speaker 1: the next night you're in a dive bar to one
- 21:03Speaker 1: hundred or two hundred people and the PA is clapped out.
- 21:06Speaker 1: You can't hear yourself. Yeah, I mean much of them might.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's fine, it's just it's just
- 21:16Speaker 1: it's just what you do. You know, Like we're an
- 21:19Speaker 1: underground metal band, Tom, you know, it gets cool opportunities
- 21:24Speaker 1: to do this bigger stuff as well sometimes and we
- 21:27Speaker 1: just we just take that in our stride and feel
- 21:30Speaker 1: grateful that we get to do it. And then we
- 21:33Speaker 1: get back to doing the clubs and stuff as well.
- 21:36Speaker 1: And you know, I mean we're like ten to fifteen, fifteen,
- 21:41Speaker 1: almost fifteen years into the band, and you.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Know, it feels like it's going better than ever. So
- 21:45Speaker 3: that's that's great.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. And with the bigger venues, do you
- 21:51Speaker 2: ever do you ever get a freaked out a bit
- 21:54Speaker 2: by how many eyes are on you or that doesn't
- 21:56Speaker 2: phaze you at all.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Uh well, I think not really.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I mean when we first started, like we started, we
- 22:05Speaker 1: got the opportunity to do a few really big shows
- 22:07Speaker 1: early on.
- 22:09Speaker 3: We did.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I remember we played it Hamasonic in Jakarta and there
- 22:13Speaker 1: was a lot of people at that. There must have
- 22:14Speaker 1: been I don't know, maybe ten fifteen, twenty, I don't
- 22:17Speaker 1: know how many people. It's hard to tell, but it
- 22:18Speaker 1: was a lot of people. We did sound Wave, I
- 22:21Speaker 1: mean we got we got a gig. We played at
- 22:23Speaker 1: sound Wave, I can't remember, maybe twenty fourteen, uh, and
- 22:29Speaker 1: we got we got put in front of like some
- 22:35Speaker 1: band canceled and we just kind of got asked to
- 22:37Speaker 1: fill in and play this slot and they gave it
- 22:39Speaker 1: to They gave it to us, and I think we
- 22:41Speaker 1: played like after go Jira and like maybe before Mastadona
- 22:46Speaker 1: or something like that, and there was so many people there. Yeah,
- 22:53Speaker 1: it was like it was like and it was just
- 22:55Speaker 1: one of those things. I think one of the bands
- 22:57Speaker 1: pulled out and we just they just said, hey, King
- 22:59Speaker 1: Parrott played there, and we're like, yeah, yeah.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no time to be nervous. He just got into
- 23:04Speaker 2: it and.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it was insane.
- 23:07Speaker 2: It was that's so crazy.
- 23:09Speaker 1: And yeah, like to answer your question anyway, like we've
- 23:13Speaker 1: been doing that stuff for a long time, and we've
- 23:15Speaker 1: had the opportunity to play some big shows. We've done
- 23:18Speaker 1: sound Way, we've done Download, We've done like lots of
- 23:21Speaker 1: different festivals are not first, and then we've played lots
- 23:25Speaker 1: of stadium shows.
- 23:25Speaker 3: We've been supporting pan Terra since.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Twenty twenty three, so we've done a bunch of shows
- 23:31Speaker 1: with them over there, and we've done a bunch of
- 23:32Speaker 1: shows with them here and in Europe, and.
- 23:34Speaker 3: Now we're going back to do more in the States.
- 23:36Speaker 1: So you know, those shows are typically between ten and
- 23:40Speaker 1: fifteen thousand people. So yeah, it's fine, I'm okay with
- 23:44Speaker 1: it now, good good.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Sorry, can you tell me how what the time is?
- 23:50Speaker 2: I don't know if I've gone.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Past seven twenty three.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Okay, I've just got a couple more.
- 23:56Speaker 3: And it's easy, okay.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Cool For someone picking up a Young Person's Guide to
- 24:03Speaker 2: compare it as their first introduction to you, guys, what
- 24:06Speaker 2: message or experience do you hope they walk away with?
- 24:13Speaker 1: Well, it's kind of hard to say when you play
- 24:16Speaker 1: this kind of music. I mean, I think, well, the
- 24:22Speaker 1: artwork itself is kind of ridiculous for the kind of
- 24:25Speaker 1: music that it is. So ye that was that was
- 24:30Speaker 1: an intentional kind of high in a way. But I
- 24:35Speaker 1: think when you put the album on itself, it's sort
- 24:38Speaker 1: of ripped straight in and it goes straight to the
- 24:40Speaker 1: jugular and I hope people can hear the effort and
- 24:49Speaker 1: time that was span into the into crafting the songs
- 24:53Speaker 1: and two making a really sick, well produced extreme metal record,
- 25:01Speaker 1: you know, and there's a lot of different feelings and
- 25:03Speaker 1: emotion in it, but which is you know, to the
- 25:07Speaker 1: untrained ear, it might just sound like.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Noise.
- 25:11Speaker 1: But I think people that are into extreme metal, they'll
- 25:14Speaker 1: be able to listen to it and hear lots of
- 25:16Speaker 1: different influences, lots of different sounds, but something that comes
- 25:21Speaker 1: together and is.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Uniquely what King Parrot is. You know.
- 25:24Speaker 1: There's elements of you know, power violence and high coore
- 25:29Speaker 1: punk stuff in there, there's rock and roll stuff in there.
- 25:31Speaker 1: There's some cool like solos and stuff on this record
- 25:34Speaker 1: that we haven't really done lots of in the past,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and then there's just some really good songwriting. You know,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I think from my perspective, it's I'm proud of it.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been lucky enough to listen to it already.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And what you said, like, I totally agree. Like, on
- 25:50Speaker 2: face value, with the music that you guys make, it
- 25:53Speaker 2: could be interpreted as like, oh, yeah, it's just noise,
- 25:56Speaker 2: but it's not. And especially with this album, you can
- 25:59Speaker 2: hear the influencers in there. And then if you get
- 26:02Speaker 2: into the songwriting, like you said, the lyrics, like it's
- 26:05Speaker 2: really textural that it's very deep.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Oh, I appreciate you saying that, thank you.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, it's great, and I think as well,
- 26:13Speaker 2: it does really build from your previous albums as well.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Like you said, it's there's not one previous album of
- 26:18Speaker 2: yours that I could really be like, yeah, it sounds
- 26:20Speaker 2: exactly like this album. It's it's its own.
- 26:23Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, And I think and that's that's like I said,
- 26:25Speaker 1: before you know it, we've been kind of being oh,
- 26:29Speaker 1: we've probably got our sound. You know, we sound like
- 26:31Speaker 1: King Parrot, Like you listen to it and you go,
- 26:33Speaker 1: that's King Parrot, Like, you know, we kind of sound
- 26:36Speaker 1: like that, so you wouldn't really mistake us for any
- 26:39Speaker 1: other band. And I think that's like that's a great
- 26:42Speaker 1: thing for us because then we can just kind of
- 26:45Speaker 1: we can journey out into other areas and pull that
- 26:48Speaker 1: stuff in and make it our. So I think we're
- 26:51Speaker 1: really grateful for.
- 26:53Speaker 2: Yeah, definitely, you've refined your sound and you, as you
- 26:55Speaker 2: just said, you sound like King Parrot now and it's yeah.
- 26:59Speaker 2: And And what's the coolest or strangest fan interaction you've had?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Is there any weird things that you've been given?
- 27:06Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I can imagine.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Oh yeah, far out the strangest. Let me think, let
- 27:15Speaker 1: me think, Well.
- 27:18Speaker 2: There's been a couple of incidences.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Where we've had I remember we played at this like
- 27:25Speaker 1: outdoor show. It was like a minifest kind of thing
- 27:28Speaker 1: up in Cologna in Canada, uh huh. And I think
- 27:33Speaker 1: there was lots of people doing acid or something like
- 27:35Speaker 1: that there for sure. And this woman just came up
- 27:39Speaker 1: on stage and she just took all her clothes.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Off and she was naked. It was like it was
- 27:45Speaker 3: like I was kind of taken back.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I was like, I was like, I just I wasn't
- 27:50Speaker 1: expecting that she just took all her clothes off on stage,
- 27:53Speaker 1: like totally naked.
- 27:57Speaker 3: I just took a few steps back and just she
- 27:59Speaker 3: was dancing around.
- 27:59Speaker 1: You must have been totally wasted, and I just I
- 28:03Speaker 1: just stood back and let her dance and she ended
- 28:05Speaker 1: up just like getting off the stage. But that was
- 28:08Speaker 1: kind of weird and confronted. We were in stitches, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 1: trying to play this music and chicken stage.
- 28:15Speaker 3: That was hilarious. It was.
- 28:17Speaker 1: It was yeah, it was like an outdoor festival kind
- 28:20Speaker 1: of thing, and yeah, it was pretty strange.
- 28:22Speaker 3: And then one other time.
- 28:25Speaker 1: We were in I think it was in Hobart, maybe
- 28:28Speaker 1: in Tazzy and uh yeah, and this guy got got
- 28:32Speaker 1: naked on stage and he took his clothes off and
- 28:37Speaker 1: he was yeah, and he went to stage dive and
- 28:42Speaker 1: he just everyone moved out.
- 28:44Speaker 3: The way ship so hard, and it.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Was it was just like no one wanted to catch him. Yeah,
- 28:55Speaker 1: it was like it was packed, but you know, sometimes
- 28:58Speaker 1: it's hard to move out the way, but they all
- 28:59Speaker 1: got out of the way.
- 29:00Speaker 5: And it just it was like, oh my god.
- 29:05Speaker 2: There's something about King Parrot clearly that makes people to
- 29:07Speaker 2: take the clothes off, right.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Yeah, well that happened a few times, that's for sure.
- 29:11Speaker 3: And then when it comes.
- 29:12Speaker 1: To gifts, well, I don't know, I mean I mean,
- 29:17Speaker 1: I'll show you this thing.
- 29:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not real. If someone made me this skull.
- 29:23Speaker 1: What into the air like and it's like it gone
- 29:30Speaker 1: an Australian crown or coat of arms or whatever.
- 29:34Speaker 5: That's a weird thing. That was kind of weird. I
- 29:35Speaker 5: was like, I wasn't expecting it. Oh, I wasn't expecting
- 29:39Speaker 5: a skull, but then I got a skull. I mean,
- 29:43Speaker 5: I remember like we went on tour in.
- 29:45Speaker 1: The States in twenty twenty three and this war woman
- 29:50Speaker 1: messaged us and said, hey, I've got some gifts for you.
- 29:54Speaker 1: We're in Detroit and we will put parking out in the
- 29:56Speaker 1: front of the venue in our in our boss and
- 29:59Speaker 1: she said, I've got some gifts for you. I want
- 30:01Speaker 1: to bring some gifts over. And I was like, okay,
- 30:04Speaker 1: well we're parked out the front, just coming knock on
- 30:06Speaker 1: the door.
- 30:07Speaker 3: We're just sitting in the bus and.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Put this hamper of all this food and all of
- 30:12Speaker 1: this all this stuff like some like some alcohol and
- 30:17Speaker 1: maybe some weed, I don't.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Know, things like you know, like some Detroit socks.
- 30:24Speaker 6: And and some like a hat and a beanie and
- 30:28Speaker 6: T shirts and all of this stuff like from Detroit.
- 30:31Speaker 6: And I was like I like things like oil and
- 30:35Speaker 6: food and candles and just all the cool things.
- 30:38Speaker 1: And I was like, that was so fucking cool. And
- 30:40Speaker 1: that shit happens a lot over in America, Like people
- 30:44Speaker 1: are very grateful for you to, you know, come from
- 30:47Speaker 1: Australia and to play, and we've always had such great
- 30:51Speaker 1: experiences over there with the hospitality and and just the
- 30:54Speaker 1: way that they support stuff. It's a lot different to hear,
- 30:59Speaker 1: you know, Like in Australia, I feel like sometimes people
- 31:02Speaker 1: can you know, you get the tall poppy syndrome kind
- 31:05Speaker 1: of thing, you're doing really well, they want to.
- 31:07Speaker 3: Chop your head off off.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's it.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And in America, like it's sort of more like you're
- 31:12Speaker 1: doing well, they want to they want to push you up.
- 31:14Speaker 3: And I think that's a really cool thing.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely, how sweet. That is so lovely. But yeah,
- 31:20Speaker 2: at the same time where you're like, oh, don't buy us,
- 31:23Speaker 2: Like do you feel a bit I don't know. I
- 31:26Speaker 2: don't know if you feel a bit funny receiving a
- 31:27Speaker 2: lot of gifts or is it just whatever.
- 31:30Speaker 1: It's totally cool, you know, I mean, yeah, it's it's
- 31:34Speaker 1: you know, it's not it's not the good slamor that
- 31:36Speaker 1: people think it is when you go out on tour.
- 31:38Speaker 1: So when people do nice things for you, it's I'm
- 31:41Speaker 1: full of gratitude and and really love love that stuff.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You know, it sort of makes you feel makes you
- 31:48Speaker 1: feel good when you're kind of missing home or whatever,
- 31:50Speaker 1: when you're home seeking stuff. So when nice people want
- 31:53Speaker 1: to do things for you, it's it's it's it's really cool, thoughtful.
- 31:57Speaker 2: Okay, last question, You're stuck with a tour bus for
- 32:00Speaker 2: days with one snack, one movie, and one album. What
- 32:03Speaker 2: are your survival picks?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Okay, so one snack, one movie, and one album. All right,
- 32:10Speaker 1: well let me think about that for two seconds. One snack,
- 32:19Speaker 1: one snack.
- 32:22Speaker 3: I'm not much of a snacker really.
- 32:24Speaker 1: I've tried to stop the snacks the because when I
- 32:27Speaker 1: start snacking, well, I mean, in the past, it definitely
- 32:30Speaker 1: would have been Reese's peanut butter cups. It's definitely in America.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Those little bustards get me every time. One movie, well,
- 32:43Speaker 1: I've always loved I've always loved Reservoir Dogs, so or
- 32:49Speaker 1: maybe I'll go with Reservoir Dogs.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Great film. It's always it's always.
- 32:54Speaker 1: Ridiculous, no matter how long it's been between watches of it.
- 32:58Speaker 3: I always enjoy that movie. Yeah. One album, Well, I'm
- 33:04Speaker 3: gonna go with Power Aide j C d C.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, classic.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Absolute classic. That's my favorite a CDC record.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Oh fucking Wicked Choices. Man, it was so nice to
- 33:18Speaker 2: meet you young. Thank you so much for your time today.
- 33:20Speaker 2: We're loving the new album that's tour.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Thank you so much, Angela. I appreciate your time and
- 33:26Speaker 1: thank you so much.
- 33:27Speaker 4: For Uh God, SOB I got t do talk play.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Oh oh, now that's why I went down on my
- 34:25Speaker 4: sad Oh why showing?

- 34:39Speaker 4: I want John down by T want so tat all

- 34:54Speaker 4: watch shoun down go want so tie aside? Well, don't don't,
- 35:03Speaker 4: don't
