• 0:20
SPEAKER_02: If we knew that this podcast really it's simple, it's a podcast where we entered data, we learn about how they were raised, we learn about uh the life weapons that were important to them, we learn about the values that are important to them, and really we learn about how we can work hard to become a better quarterback or leader of our folks.
• 0:35
SPEAKER_02: So let's sit back, relax, and let's get to today's episode of the quarterback.
• 0:40
SPEAKER_02: Everybody, it's KCJ Cox with the Quarterback.com.
• 0:43
SPEAKER_02: We are in season seven, and uh I'm I'm excited for our next guest specifically.
• 0:49
SPEAKER_02: I want to get a buddy that agrees to come on with Chitko from the front of the gate.
• 0:55
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've known him for north of 12 years.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_02: He was a Hall of Fame telephony code.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_02: He's a Greek monkey, he's a singer, he might be in the next uh if instinct comes out, he might be the best, he is a hell of a smoker.
• 1:08
SPEAKER_02: I'm not talking about darts, I'm talking about me.
• 1:11
SPEAKER_02: He's a great golfer, he's a duck fan, and he can do an amazing Randy Macho Man Sabbath, but that's not why we're having him on here.
• 1:18
SPEAKER_02: We're having Corey Cutliff on because he's working hard to become that elite quarterback of this house.
• 1:24
SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, Mr.
• 1:25
SPEAKER_02: Cutlip, welcome to quarterback back.
• 1:27
  SPEAKER_03: Hey, thank you, Casey.
• 1:29
  SPEAKER_03: Happy to be here.
• 1:30
  SPEAKER_03: What a day.
• 1:31
  SPEAKER_03: Best day ever.
• 1:32
  SPEAKER_02: There we go.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_02: And everybody, I I wish this was a video.
• 1:35
SPEAKER_02: We have done a video at times, but there's uh quite a array of flags I'm looking at.
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_02: We're we're I'm seeing a Kiowa, I think I see the U.S.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_02: Open at Chambers Bay, and I'm also seeing a hole in one at Lake Wilderness Golf Course, which is um uh usually a master's qualifier.
• 1:51
SPEAKER_02: People don't know that, but it is Little Augusta of the Northwest.
• 1:57
SPEAKER_02: All right, so we always start out each episode with gratitude.
• 2:00
SPEAKER_02: So tell me, what are you most grateful for as a dad today?
• 2:03
SPEAKER_05: Oh boy, um uh shooting from the hip there.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_05: Most grateful for me being a dad today is uh, you know, I I've learned from a lot of people on what to do and what not to do.
• 2:16
SPEAKER_05: And I am trying to be uh the yes dad.
• 2:20
SPEAKER_05: Um I kind of flipped that switch probably uh 10, 12 years ago.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_05: And so I am so grateful for um the children that we have right now, the things that I say yes to going and doing with them, uh finding a way to just make that happen, you know, sacrifice some of my time, whether it's in the morning, late at night, um, making up work in order to get to see these things, how they are growing and progressing.
• 2:51
SPEAKER_05: And uh I'm just really super grateful for being able to do that.
• 2:56
SPEAKER_05: Um being a yes dad.
• 2:58
  SPEAKER_02: Love it, man.
• 2:59
SPEAKER_02: We're gonna dive into that.
• 3:00
SPEAKER_02: I already have questions if I'm gonna fight my curiosity.
• 3:02
SPEAKER_02: Say what I'm most grateful for today is we're recording everybody on July 13th and stuff, so we'll come out in a couple weeks.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_02: We are a few days before the member guest uh at our golf club or you I play golf, which is like the best four days of um essentially every calendar year.
• 3:20
SPEAKER_02: And my lovely bride, uh, she's learned now, she's like she goes out of town for these next four days because she knows dad's pretty much worthless these next four days, these next four days.
• 3:30
SPEAKER_02: But I'm grateful for a wife who loves the fact that this is super important to me and the and the kids love it.
• 3:36
SPEAKER_02: And obviously, Corey knows my son Ryder.
• 3:38
SPEAKER_02: Ryder's gonna be cattying uh this week and uh just being able to watch watch them and coming home and and getting peppered with questions from my son and daughter, like how'd you do what you know, and usually I have to tell them, Hey, sorry guys, let you I let you down again.
• 3:52
SPEAKER_02: Uh but just grateful for the fact that my kids get almost more excited about the member guests than I do.
• 3:58
SPEAKER_02: So it's gonna be a fun, fun week ahead.
• 4:00
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, awesome.
• 4:02
SPEAKER_02: Okay, bring us inside the cutla puddle.
• 4:04
  SPEAKER_02: You're you're playing quarterback.
• 4:06
SPEAKER_02: Uh we'll we'll let you talk about your lovely bride.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_02: She's probably the general manager, but talk about each member of the squad, what everybody's up to, and also how did you and your wife meet?
• 4:16
  SPEAKER_05: All right.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_05: Um, well, I I'll start off with the kids first.
• 4:20
SPEAKER_05: Um, Hadley is our youngest.
• 4:22
SPEAKER_05: She is 14, entering her freshman year at Oklahoma.
• 4:28
SPEAKER_05: Um, she is so kind-hearted, she's so thoughtful, but man, she's got this sarcastic streak in her that is is really fun.
• 4:41
SPEAKER_05: And as you know, in around our club, there's a lot of jokes and uh and some fun stuff thrown out there.
• 4:48
SPEAKER_05: Um one of our members uh who loves to pitch fun to my boys says the only one I'm worried about coming around is Hadley, because man, she can give it right back.
• 5:00
SPEAKER_05: So that would be the hot sauce hamster.
• 5:03
  SPEAKER_02: There you go.
• 5:03
  SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Ronde.
• 5:05
  SPEAKER_05: Yes.
• 5:06
SPEAKER_05: Um so uh she's just fantastic.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_05: We actually just got back from uh one-week trip to the East Coast together.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_05: That was the first real trip that daddy daughter have done.
• 5:18
SPEAKER_05: Um that was chaperoning with her uh eighth grade going into ninth grade history class.
• 5:25
SPEAKER_05: So 43 kids, nine adults had a great time.
• 5:28
SPEAKER_05: Um it was just really cool.
• 5:30
SPEAKER_05: And to see when you're around that many kids for a week, seeing the level of maturity that she has was uh just a blessing to see that.
• 5:40
SPEAKER_05: You know, you you know it, but then when you get around and and you're sacked in for a week with others, you're like, wow, yeah, she's she's really great.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_05: So um that is Hadley.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_05: So Mason is 16.
• 5:53
SPEAKER_05: Uh our running family joke with Mason is new year, new deductible.
• 6:01
SPEAKER_05: And uh he taps that deductible out, it seems, every year.
• 6:05
SPEAKER_05: He is also into soccer, he's a great goalie player, he's got aspirations for college play.
• 6:12
SPEAKER_05: Um, he's a very studious kid, so proud of him.
• 6:15
SPEAKER_05: Both of those two just work so hard on their schoolwork.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_05: We never have had to like question if if they're on their schoolwork or not.
• 6:24
SPEAKER_05: Um he's very thoughtful as well.
• 6:27
SPEAKER_05: Um, he's he's turning into the big kid, so that's been been fun to see.
• 6:32
SPEAKER_05: Um and 16-year-old, you know, having his license, he is enjoying a beautiful summer right now in front of and then our oldest is Kale.
• 6:42
SPEAKER_05: Uh he just turned 20.
• 6:44
SPEAKER_05: He uh he finished his sophomore year at the University of Oregon.
• 6:49
SPEAKER_05: Um, duck fan for life here.
• 6:51
SPEAKER_05: So when he selected that at his school, mind you, I did not force him in, but told him he needed to choose where he belonged.
• 6:58
SPEAKER_05: He chose that's when I so yeah.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_05: Uh but finished up um sophomore year in there, and we've seen him three days this summer because he loves uh being in Eugene, and um he just hasn't come home for a summer.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_05: He's got a job and he's super happy down there.
• 7:15
SPEAKER_05: He's covered rock crawling, um rock climbing, excuse me, and hiking.
• 7:20
  SPEAKER_05: Just did St.
• 7:21
SPEAKER_05: Helens on a whim and did one of the three sisters this last weekend.
• 7:26
SPEAKER_05: So he's found a new passion and some friends to do that with.
• 7:29
  SPEAKER_05: Great.
• 7:29
SPEAKER_05: His soccer career is um three kids that we are uh are blessed to have.
• 7:36
SPEAKER_05: I used to joke because everybody would tell me how great of a kid Kale was, and I was that I can't wait to meet this kid that everybody tells me how great he is.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_05: Uh the joke behind that is if you were gonna treat anybody um or have anybody that you're gonna be a difficult time with, make sure it's your mom and dad and me at home, not somebody out um in public that you know because we know you're a good kid, we're gonna have that love for you.
• 8:00
SPEAKER_05: So uh we're gonna forgive you like some other.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_05: And now you he's finally grown into that point that oh yeah, uh very proud of those three kids.
• 8:12
SPEAKER_05: Uh the only reason that I can be proud of them is because my wife, Natasha, and uh we have been married almost 22 years.
• 8:23
SPEAKER_05: Um and it's uh it's a weird story of how we met, but we'll just tie it back to my first uh my first roommate after high school.
• 8:37
SPEAKER_05: Um I went to BCC briefly and moved in with a buddy uh T Ray.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_05: He went to Mercer Island.
• 8:43
  SPEAKER_05: We moved in together.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_05: We were in a couple of um choirs together, and so we lived together on Mercer Island.
• 8:50
SPEAKER_05: He knew Natasha since they were in middle school.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_05: Uh, she was home for college from college one summer.
• 8:56
SPEAKER_05: She actually asked about going out with me, and T Ray said he's not your type.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_05: And so every year on our wedding anniversary, I make sure to send T-Ray that no, she's still not my one more year.
• 9:09
  SPEAKER_05: There we go.
• 9:10
SPEAKER_05: Um, she does, she makes it all happen at home.
• 9:12
SPEAKER_05: She's one that um chases kids to soccer and um and and horseback and just make sure everything goes, um allows me to do stuff and get away with things that uh most don't.
• 9:26
SPEAKER_05: I'm so blessed to have that support that uh I dump myself into work and love taking care of people, and I find myself at my at my shop uh way late at times, and there's never any grief from it.
• 9:42
SPEAKER_05: She knows that I'm working hard to be able to provide so everybody can can get to have those fun times and and go places and have opportunities to um put themselves in the right position.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_05: So um she's been instrumental in allowing me to go ahead and dedicate myself here, and then when I need a break and I need to go play golf, uh it's not met with grief.
• 10:08
SPEAKER_05: It's it's met with uh, yeah, you need a break, you know.
• 10:11
SPEAKER_02: So she's like, you better go low, make us proud.
• 10:15
SPEAKER_05: She's smart enough there that she now she just says, How'd you play?
• 10:21
  SPEAKER_05: You know?
• 10:22
SPEAKER_02: Uh so and uh we we have a new member of the family, too.
• 10:28
SPEAKER_05: We do have a new member of the family.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_05: Unfortunately, we lost a member, um, Palmer, that was with us for uh I don't know, 10 10 years or so, and that kind of came on quick.
• 10:41
SPEAKER_05: And it was it was so difficult to lose a family pet like that.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_05: The plan was that we were gonna take some time, and after about 10 days, it was like, all right, this house is empty and quiet, we gotta fix it.
• 10:53
SPEAKER_05: So we just uh last weekend, 5th of July, we went and picked up Yellow Labrador.
• 10:59
SPEAKER_05: Um her name is Frankie, and there's been quite the debate on names uh throughout the house.
• 11:06
SPEAKER_05: So at this point, we have stuck with Frankie, and she's she's been great.
• 11:12
  SPEAKER_02: So love it.
• 11:13
  SPEAKER_02: So good.
• 11:14
  SPEAKER_02: So yes, dad.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_02: That when when you need immediately said that, I thought, what other dude's gonna say yes on the shop running a trip to the East Coast?
• 11:22
SPEAKER_02: So tell us about for parents that don't know about that, maybe like what why should they do it and give us a few highlights of the trip that you and Hadley have.
• 11:31
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, so I guess I'll I'll tell you the yes dad thing of where I came, I came with that was um years ago, it was being asked to go and do something.
• 11:43
SPEAKER_05: And um I had just decided, you know, it was all this time into work and whatnot that was taking time away from family, and then they want to go and do something.
• 11:52
  SPEAKER_05: And it's like I can't say no, I gotta say yes.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_05: So it's kind of like I gotta run this little, you know, run a short saying yes, um, and making sure that I'm there for them and doing things they want to do and build that relationship.
• 12:06
SPEAKER_05: That's kind of where yes dad came from.
• 12:08
SPEAKER_05: I tried to um maintain that.
• 12:12
SPEAKER_05: Um and uh so yeah, the last thing was this trip to the East Coast, seven days.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_04: Uh, we did Boston for three days, Philly for half a day, Gettysburg for half a day, DC for two and a half days, fly homes.
• 12:30
SPEAKER_05: I mean, there's so many highlights in there.
• 12:33
SPEAKER_05: Uh World Cup was going on in Boston and in Philly.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_05: So, man, it's just it's it was pure excitement all the way around.
• 12:40
SPEAKER_05: It was really cool to um be able to travel at that time and during the 250th anniversary of the country.
• 12:48
SPEAKER_05: So uh in DC, like everything, you know, the the 250.
• 12:53
SPEAKER_05: So uh yeah, we saw some great things, and it's just like uh we tasted a lot, is the easiest way to say it.
• 13:01
SPEAKER_05: We didn't really like immerse in anything um deep, but we tasted so many things that now uh I got some things on the list saying, okay, I gotta go back there and spend spend actual real time in that technology.
• 13:15
  SPEAKER_02: Very cool.
• 13:16
SPEAKER_02: Well, I think when you said is uh when you saw Hadley's, you knew she's mature, but seeing it around other kids, I think that those are like the ultimate uh mom and dad need to take a breath and be be proud of the kids you raised because it's like I think you're how your kids act when you're not when they're not around or when they're with other adults and how they show up is like a testament to how mom and dad have done.
• 13:37
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 13:38
SPEAKER_02: And I don't know that never gets old when I hear stuff like that.
• 13:41
SPEAKER_02: So uh shout out to to mom and dad for raising three three good kids.
• 13:45
SPEAKER_02: And I had the uh luxury of seeing a hell of a caddy and mace with a with coming off an injury and waking up and not even playing, but just driving to watch pops and hang out and laugh at us a little bit.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean heck, writer's gonna be out there, member guest.
• 14:03
SPEAKER_05: Uh I might just have to I might have to bring up Mason.
• 14:06
SPEAKER_05: I did have a talk with a buddy who is not a member who is an adult the other day.
• 14:10
SPEAKER_05: Jeez, I should come and daddy for you guys.
• 14:12
  SPEAKER_05: It sounds so fun.
• 14:14
SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, so that was that was pretty pretty great.
• 14:18
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, yeah, you've been around a couple of the kids, and I've been around your kids.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_05: Uh we have a great core group of buddies.
• 14:26
SPEAKER_05: Um, and it seems like all of our kids, at least all the ones that that we've been around are pretty darn good kids.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_02: No one's in jail yet.
• 14:34
  SPEAKER_02: We're doing something right.
• 14:35
  SPEAKER_02: Not yet.
• 14:36
  unknown: Yeah.
• 14:37
  SPEAKER_02: I don't want to jinx this.
• 14:38
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I don't think it's gonna be either our kids.
• 14:41
SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, there's a couple of meatballs out there that might have a little hard time later.
• 14:47
  SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
• 14:48
SPEAKER_02: Okay, bring me back to what was life like growing up for you.
• 14:51
SPEAKER_02: Talk about the impact mom and dad had on you um as it relates to like values and what was most important growing up.
• 14:58
SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, so this is I guess this would be where uh where I've learned the most in in my adult life is um my dad worked very hard.
• 15:10
SPEAKER_05: Um and uh he was uh blue collar, um manual labor, marble mason uh guy.
• 15:19
SPEAKER_05: So he was very good at his job and he worked hard, very dedicated to it.
• 15:24
SPEAKER_05: I'm sure that that's where I have got that from.
• 15:27
SPEAKER_05: Downfall was is that I didn't have much um much time with him, you know, and I recognized that early on in my kit.
• 15:35
SPEAKER_05: Like I don't want to be that, you know, I want to make sure that I'm doing all these things and uh always around.
• 15:42
SPEAKER_05: And it wasn't uh a negative thing, it was just that different time, but you know, that was that was where a priority was.
• 15:52
SPEAKER_05: So I spent a lot of time with my mom and um I was a very good kid.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_05: Uh I never got into trouble um all through high school.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_05: I was I was goody two shoes kind of guy, so um maybe it wasn't the most fun child, you know, but uh but I was a good and I have I've maintained that into a day.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_05: So um I have wanted to give my kids a lot more opportunity, whether it be in sports, uh traveling, um just sampling different things.
• 16:26
SPEAKER_05: And so that's been important to me.
• 16:28
SPEAKER_05: Um so I don't I don't look back and be like, oh, I had a bad childhood or you know, my parents weren't great.
• 16:35
SPEAKER_05: Yes, I've learned something as an adult.
• 16:37
SPEAKER_05: I've gone through counseling on some of this stuff, figure out like, oh, that's not what we're supposed to be, you know.
• 16:42
SPEAKER_05: And um, so it's been a it's been a lot of uh self-reflection and recognition of um like how selfish I I am or have been.
• 16:56
SPEAKER_05: And hey, I really gotta work on that.
• 16:58
SPEAKER_05: I can't can't be like that all the time.
• 17:00
SPEAKER_05: So sure there might be times, but um yeah, it's just something that I've had to learn and really really figure out in adulthood and as a parent.
• 17:12
SPEAKER_05: So that's kind of where the yes dad thing uh started and came from, and just working hard to make sure that I am there for my kids in every way, uh, and and guiding them rather than letting them find their own way.
• 17:27
SPEAKER_05: I think that either they do need to find their own way um often.
• 17:33
SPEAKER_05: I don't want to hold their hand um and have something go a specific way for them.
• 17:39
SPEAKER_05: Um they need to learn that.
• 17:41
SPEAKER_05: And uh, I mean, I was having a discussion with my oldest son today, you know, he asking for a raise.
• 17:46
SPEAKER_05: Dad, how do I ask for a race?
• 17:48
SPEAKER_05: You know, okay, let's make sure we're going about this the right way.
• 17:51
SPEAKER_05: So I'll give you some steps and give you some pointers, but I'm not gonna tell you, you know, so um, or tell you how to go in there exactly learning through this and and figuring out how to be a better human being, how to be a good a good father, how to be a great husband.
• 18:07
SPEAKER_05: Um I think um my wife and I agree that our relationship is number one in the house.
• 18:16
SPEAKER_05: Um it can't be my job can't be number one to me, the kids can't be number one to her.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_05: We have to be number one to each other, and then things kind of filter down after that.
• 18:27
SPEAKER_05: Tell me what mom did.
• 18:29
SPEAKER_05: Uh my mom was a homemaker, and so she was there um pretty much every day when I got home from school.
• 18:36
SPEAKER_05: And um yeah, she was always there for me.
• 18:40
SPEAKER_05: She was a she was a good mom in that in in that aspect.
• 18:44
SPEAKER_05: I didn't um I had buddies in the in the cul-de-sac that didn't have that, and they went down a wrong path.
• 18:52
SPEAKER_05: And uh so I'm I'm thankful for for that, having that type of you know person at home.
• 19:01
SPEAKER_05: That was a very important thing when Natasha and I got uh married and and decided we we were gonna have a family.
• 19:08
SPEAKER_05: Like, well, what are we gonna do?
• 19:09
SPEAKER_05: What are our roles gonna be?
• 19:11
SPEAKER_05: Uh my role is going to be work and outside, and Tasha's role was gonna be make sure that the kids have have the best childhood and and mom is there that we're the ones raising our kids, not somebody else.
• 19:25
  SPEAKER_05: So yeah.
• 19:27
  SPEAKER_02: Love, love it.
• 19:28
SPEAKER_02: Um so dad worked his ass off.
• 19:31
SPEAKER_02: Are mom and dad still with us?
• 19:32
  SPEAKER_02: Remind me?
• 19:33
SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, yeah, they are.
• 19:34
SPEAKER_02: Mom and dad's with us.
• 19:36
  SPEAKER_02: I lost my pop December 29th, 2021.
• 19:38
SPEAKER_02: It's um sometimes I still think I'd there's like it would have been so fun to have him experience like the grandkids when they get older.
• 19:46
SPEAKER_02: So I always tell people parents like this as sorry, mom and dad, as annoying as parents can be, and I'm I know me and Carrie are gonna be annoying to tell our kids later in life.
• 19:55
SPEAKER_02: We all kind of reach that stage, just like try to embrace the the goodness, the memories, um, and you know, just having to come out to watch and see the kids do it whatever they want to do.
• 20:06
SPEAKER_02: Um, that's the one thing I I do wish.
• 20:09
SPEAKER_02: Uh my dad was still here to just experience that stuff.
• 20:12
SPEAKER_05: Um, but you know, when I have I have those uh my parents are here and I have those, you know, of um I wish some things would have gone better in in our relationship.
• 20:22
SPEAKER_05: Um oh 13, 14 years ago, and they really haven't been a part of um of my life until maybe the last few years trying to reconcile, it's really difficult.
• 20:36
SPEAKER_05: Um and but they've missed everything from the kids.
• 20:39
SPEAKER_05: And unfortunately, that was a decision that um made.
• 20:43
SPEAKER_05: And so my wife and I do say it oftentimes like, damn, you missed out on some really great kids, and and what they're doing, and um that's kind of where that selfishness comes from of like what I've worked on, you know, of you know, counseling helped me figure that out.
• 21:02
SPEAKER_05: Uh and you can't do it for somebody else.
• 21:05
SPEAKER_05: Like they have to they have to want to do it for themselves, you know.
• 21:08
SPEAKER_05: So I'm I'm different now than I'm different now than I was, you know, five years ago or ten years ago.
• 21:16
SPEAKER_05: Um it's a I and I'll be different and in another five years, you know, hopefully continuing to be um to be that person that my kids can count on always, and um that I'm only gonna be there as a support system, not as uh what am I gonna get out of this?
• 21:35
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well a couple things that spoke to me there, Corps Um, I know like I think enough it was the times when our dads grew up, but like they weren't as I think hands on as like our generation of dads are right, right or wrong.
• 21:46
SPEAKER_02: I don't know why that is, but it's like you know, I I've talked to a lot of it.
• 21:49
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, how would you not want to like and I had a corporate job for twenty something years, and I remember early, and many people heard the core ball say it again, I don't know if you've heard it, but like um Early in when the kids were young, I remember like getting home at like you know seven o'clock at night.
• 22:06
SPEAKER_02: Kids are going to bed at 7 15.
• 22:07
SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, this sucks.
• 22:09
  SPEAKER_02: This isn't what parenthood's about.
• 22:10
SPEAKER_02: And I remember then I went to my boss and got her to totally be open to like changing my schedule.
• 22:14
SPEAKER_02: And I would I pretty much would be from like five to seven.
• 22:18
SPEAKER_02: I shut my phone off unless it was like urgent, urgent, urgent, urgent, and realized that when you dial 911, my phone's not gonna ring.
• 22:24
SPEAKER_02: I'm not as important as I maybe once thought in corporate.
• 22:26
SPEAKER_02: Or but what was most important is like am I there trying to be there for as many bath times as I could, try to be in as many bed times as I could, try to coach as much as I could, try to set an example out there.
• 22:36
SPEAKER_02: And um I think a lot of I I still remember like a long time ago, like my like my dad, like when I was in fourth grade, like my mom getting into him like take him to the park and go shoot.
• 22:46
SPEAKER_02: But like if Riley is here and I'm you know I'm very lucky to work from home and she's like, hey dad, will you come rebound for me?
• 22:52
  SPEAKER_02: Thousand percent yes.
• 22:54
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I will that's the biggest thing I'll miss when she goes off to college in the fall.
• 22:58
SPEAKER_02: Is I told Carrie is like, you might need to start pulling out your jumper and let me get a rebound for you.
• 23:04
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 23:05
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 23:05
  SPEAKER_05: That's uh it's I I I can relate to that, you know.
• 23:11
SPEAKER_05: Obviously, you know, we I coach baseball too, and and I look back at those times and being like, man, those are some uh as frustrating as other kids could be, you know, not your own.
• 23:22
SPEAKER_05: Um it it was it was some great times there, and yeah, it's just it it it is different than um than it was, you know, when I was a kid for my dad, you know, the he didn't coach anything for us.
• 23:37
SPEAKER_05: And uh I'm not gonna sit here and be like, well, you should have, you know.
• 23:41
SPEAKER_05: I mean, didn't that was that was just the way it was, you know, like uh it things just change and and time and evolve, and you know, his his dad would be different too.
• 23:52
SPEAKER_05: So just something that that I've learned.
• 23:55
SPEAKER_05: You know, we've worked for for people in the past who are like, yeah, what a terrible boss.
• 23:59
SPEAKER_05: I'm not gonna be like that.
• 24:00
SPEAKER_05: So what do you do when you become that boss or you're managing people?
• 24:03
SPEAKER_05: You're thinking back to those, okay.
• 24:04
SPEAKER_05: I remember I don't want to be like that, I want to be be a little bit better than that.
• 24:08
SPEAKER_05: So um I mean, we've learned from a lot of people in our lives of of who to be and and how we want to be.
• 24:15
SPEAKER_05: And um, it's important to me that that I don't forget that, that I try to be that person uh first and foremost.
• 24:24
SPEAKER_02: Um, real quick, so before besides your dad, mom setting a great example of like working your ass off.
• 24:30
SPEAKER_02: Um I the reason why values are so important to me.
• 24:33
SPEAKER_02: Like I went through like when I was leaving, well, I think values are always important to be, but it became really, really important, I think, in my early 40s when I was like trying to think about like the three most important values, and then let those values drive the person I want to be, which is being the most humble, vulnerable, curious first myself.
• 24:47
SPEAKER_02: And I think you've done you've done a really good job of showing vulnerability already in this episode by saying, Hey man, I I want counseling.
• 24:54
SPEAKER_02: And who I think everybody probably could need counseling from time to time.
• 24:58
SPEAKER_02: And you and one of my friends says you don't need to be sick, you don't need to be sick to get better.
• 25:02
SPEAKER_02: And like, why not go work on yourself?
• 25:05
SPEAKER_02: Um, we exercise, we don't intercise, we don't work on our minds too often.
• 25:08
SPEAKER_02: So um uh for like as you so maybe so back to back to childhood though, is there like was there another couple values that that really stood out um that maybe you had to learn through like a story or uh that that mom or dad really had to reinforce?
• 25:25
  SPEAKER_05: Oh boy.
• 25:26
SPEAKER_05: Um you know, I've always uh I I don't know if this is gonna answer your question.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_05: I've always been a kid that was like curious, and um I had been told and heard that you know I like always got along great with um that I would just wander off in the neighborhood, you know, back when kids could wander off in the neighborhood, uh but I would wander off in I mean less than seven years ago, you know, and then it was like my parents are like, what happened to Corey?
• 25:59
  SPEAKER_05: Where is he?
• 26:00
SPEAKER_05: You know, go find him.
• 26:02
SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, find me down the street in some guy's garage, just talking to an older guy, you know, and comes in and it was like the first time my parents never met him like, oh yeah, we've been you know talking for 30 minutes or so.
• 26:15
SPEAKER_05: So um I've always had like really good relationships with adults from when I was young on.
• 26:21
SPEAKER_05: And it could be um, I mean, I my grandparents were great on both sides.
• 26:27
SPEAKER_05: Um I had good relationships there with them, um, you know, aunt and uncles and whatnot, um that I always appreciated.
• 26:36
SPEAKER_05: And I mean, even into adulthood, like I would just call them, you know, just to see what's going on.
• 26:41
SPEAKER_05: So I don't know if that um necessarily like answers a question, but just being good, having a good relationship with adults, and then it kind of translated in um, I mean, I got my first job the day before I turned 15, I couldn't even start work, you're right.
• 26:59
SPEAKER_05: And uh and it was in you know, customer service.
• 27:02
SPEAKER_05: It was at Boston Market and Issaqua, you know, God rest its soul, so delicious.
• 27:09
SPEAKER_05: Uh, but um, I loved that part of it of you know, that's you know, serving people at the time, and that has always kind of come along.
• 27:18
SPEAKER_05: And whether it um uh my grandmother was a practitioner, so people would call her and ask her to pray.
• 27:25
SPEAKER_05: So maybe that's part of where that came from, of just that wanting to help thing.
• 27:32
SPEAKER_05: Um, because I would call her and you know, if I was having a struggle time, just you know, give me some good thoughts.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_05: What can what can I work on?
• 27:39
SPEAKER_05: Type that's there's probably some value in there uh that I learned early on.
• 27:46
SPEAKER_05: Um your parents gave you a leash, they let you they should have given me a leash, or there wasn't leashes back then, but uh yeah, I should probably should have been on but it probably benefited you.
• 27:58
SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's where you learned how to you know communicate with adults, like I said, which obviously helps you throughout your life.
• 28:02
SPEAKER_02: And I mean how many how many kids did you see when we were raising kids where you're you go out to dinner and one of your buddies' kids couldn't order for themselves?
• 28:12
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 28:12
SPEAKER_02: And I was like, I we we early in our kids like here's the menu.
• 28:16
SPEAKER_02: I help you read it.
• 28:17
SPEAKER_02: If you don't read it, but when the lady or man comes over, it's I'm not ordering for you, that's your job.
• 28:22
SPEAKER_05: If you don't want to talk, you gotta look at them, you gotta talk loud enough in here, you know.
• 28:28
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you don't you don't order anything, then you you can stare and watch me eat, but you're gonna order for yourself.
• 28:32
SPEAKER_02: I'm not doing it for you.
• 28:33
SPEAKER_02: And that quickly learned, it's like, and now it's so cool to say, you know, you you you know when you because you gotta put time in, but like you get the pleases and thank yous, you get the you know, going out of your way to those types of things, which again isn't doesn't just happen.
• 28:45
SPEAKER_02: It freaking takes work with consistency and habits.
• 28:48
SPEAKER_05: Uh please and thank you is a huge thing for us.
• 28:52
SPEAKER_05: Uh I love having my kids friends over.
• 28:54
  SPEAKER_05: It's fun.
• 28:55
SPEAKER_05: Um I love being you know, a safe place, our our house, right?
• 29:01
SPEAKER_05: You know where we live.
• 29:02
SPEAKER_05: So it it's a great opportunity, especially in the summertime, to be like, yes, your kids can come here, they will be safe.
• 29:08
SPEAKER_05: Some an adult will always be here.
• 29:11
SPEAKER_05: Um, but the ones that I always don't like is like, you better say please and thank you when you go to somebody, you know, and that's been an early-on thing.
• 29:21
SPEAKER_05: Um and there's a lot of kids that you know don't have that.
• 29:26
SPEAKER_05: And if they're at our house and something's going on, I don't have a problem going back into a coaching role and trying to coach those kids along into a please and thank you.
• 29:37
SPEAKER_05: This is why it's important.
• 29:38
SPEAKER_05: Don't give them the you know too hard of a time about it, but hey, let's let's kind of get on that track.
• 29:43
  SPEAKER_02: So I think I love that.
• 29:46
SPEAKER_02: I think it's um I think that's a a role for if you do have the safe house, and and I think sometimes kids will appreciate it more.
• 29:53
SPEAKER_02: It's like, oh wow, they actually are engaged, they they're trying to help me out here, they're not doing it in a dick way, they're actually trying to help.
• 29:59
SPEAKER_02: And I think that's when your kids gotta get our back or others back.
• 30:03
SPEAKER_02: Like, no, like my mom and dad are they're they're nice, they're trying to help help Karen.
• 30:06
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but then that's the other thing, Carrie and I'm sure that you just said it.
• 30:09
SPEAKER_02: Carrie and I recently were just talking about this last week.
• 30:12
SPEAKER_02: When when the kids come here and there's noise, it is the best.
• 30:15
SPEAKER_02: And that's the thing I'm probably most sad about is becoming entering this emptiness life, which is gonna be you know a month and a half away.
• 30:22
SPEAKER_02: Is it's gonna be real, real quiet.
• 30:24
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 30:25
  SPEAKER_02: That's gonna be surreal.
• 30:26
SPEAKER_02: I mean, really surreal to go through.
• 30:28
  SPEAKER_02: So right.
• 30:29
SPEAKER_05: Um yeah, and we'll we'll find you a support group.
• 30:33
  SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
• 30:33
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 30:34
  SPEAKER_05: I know you're gonna need it.
• 30:38
SPEAKER_02: Have you guys seen a babysitter?
• 30:40
  SPEAKER_02: Right.
• 30:45
SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, my name is Blaise Basal, and I hope you're enjoying today's episode of the Quarterback Dadcast.
• 30:53
SPEAKER_00: In case you're wondering, I'm a fellow dad and also the president of Kelly Mitchell.
• 30:59
SPEAKER_00: Kelly Mitchell is an employee-owned technology solutions firm, and we help organizations solve complex business challenges.
• 31:06
SPEAKER_00: I think at the end of the day, we're we're focused on our team doing work that matters for our clients.
• 31:12
SPEAKER_00: And that's because the way you show up matters, the way you treat people, clients, teammates, really everyone.
• 31:18
SPEAKER_00: That shapes the experience and the results that follow.
• 31:21
SPEAKER_00: I think similarly, Casey has had a real impact on our team internally at Kelly Mitchell.
• 31:27
SPEAKER_00: He spent time with us most recently in St.
• 31:30
SPEAKER_00: Louis with our sales team.
• 31:31
SPEAKER_00: And while he was there, he asked a question that really stuck with me.
• 31:34
SPEAKER_00: And that was, do you believe that what you do matters?
• 31:38
SPEAKER_00: That question stayed with us.
• 31:40
SPEAKER_00: It's changed how we approach our day-to-day, how we prepare, how we communicate, and ultimately how we follow through.
• 31:47
SPEAKER_00: That's why the experience Casey brings to his customers has made such an impact.
• 31:52
SPEAKER_00: Because whether when people believe their work matters, everything works better across the team with our clients and definitely in results.
• 32:01
SPEAKER_00: So we appreciate you, Casey, and now back to the podcast.
• 32:04
SPEAKER_02: I I would love to go into um counseling real quick, because I think most dads hate to call Sal out.
• 32:11
SPEAKER_02: Some dads have huge egos and they don't want to ask for help and they think they got the shit figured out, and they're not gonna, and which is complete opposite way to live life, in my opinion.
• 32:19
SPEAKER_02: I think we all are flawed, we all have gaps.
• 32:22
SPEAKER_02: Um that's why we in sports you watch film because you're no one's gonna play the perfect game.
• 32:26
SPEAKER_02: You watch film to learn.
• 32:27
SPEAKER_02: Just like as adults, sometimes you go to counseling to kind of self-reflect yourself, maybe you go to get unstuck, but they're in those jobs for a reason.
• 32:34
SPEAKER_02: And you know, like sometimes people like, why would I do that?
• 32:36
SPEAKER_02: I go, would you fly your family to Hawaii?
• 32:38
  SPEAKER_02: Well, no, you're not a pilot.
• 32:39
SPEAKER_02: So why would you try to manage all these emotions by yourself?
• 32:42
SPEAKER_02: And just and then sometimes I think sometimes people think, oh, counseling or I gotta get help, it's weakness.
• 32:47
  SPEAKER_02: And I think it's a sign of strength.
• 32:48
SPEAKER_02: I think it's a huge sign of strength, and it's what an amazing example when your kids are old enough to understand maybe what what or why you did it.
• 32:55
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 32:55
SPEAKER_02: So maybe like if there's a dad listening that maybe is like listens this up suddenly, like, hmm, we made him to stop and think real quick.
• 33:02
SPEAKER_02: Like, talk about a couple of things that were maybe most beneficial for you during that journey that might speak to the dad at home.
• 33:07
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think uh like the humility and at first, I mean, we all like we argue with why, right?
• 33:14
SPEAKER_05: And it's gonna happen, especially a good relationship, you know, that you have these, and you know, Josh, you know, it wasn't like a forced thing, but it was more of like an encouragement.
• 33:26
SPEAKER_05: Talk to somebody else, get some help.
• 33:28
SPEAKER_05: Hey, I can't answer that for you.
• 33:30
SPEAKER_05: And so I was great at you, you know, I've got some great buddies, um, and you know, guys like you know, I can talk to you, my best friend Rob, my best friend John, that we can have those discussions together of like hard stuff.
• 33:45
SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, like going and talking to a professional about some of this stuff is like I you know, give me a give me a right point of view.
• 33:54
SPEAKER_05: And um like I try and be really thoughtful and honest in my answers, uh, really with anybody because um it's not gonna do me any good to go the other way, right?
• 34:10
SPEAKER_05: So e even with my sales vendors that I deal with, like, I'm just gonna tell you where I'm at.
• 34:16
SPEAKER_05: Let's have an honest conversation through that.
• 34:19
SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, go to my doctor and you know, he's asking you he's asking me questions about myself.
• 34:26
SPEAKER_05: Why is it gonna do me any good to tell him uh you know what my exercise schedule is if it's really not that?
• 34:34
  SPEAKER_02: I don't know, one or two?
• 34:35
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right.
• 34:36
SPEAKER_05: You know, how much do you drink?
• 34:38
  SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, pretty rare.
• 34:39
SPEAKER_05: Um I mean my business, people's car, right?
• 34:44
SPEAKER_05: People come in, I'm gonna tell them what's wrong with car.
• 34:48
SPEAKER_05: You don't have to fix what you need to know, you know, and um it's something uh it's something I learned when when I did work with my dad was like, we'll tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
• 35:02
SPEAKER_05: And so trying to trying to take that farther is with like going to a counselor and saying, Okay, this is me.
• 35:10
SPEAKER_05: Now, if you don't like to like kids don't like to be hear something that they've done wrong from their parents or hear this from their parents, but they'll hear like you can tell Kale what he's doing, and he needs to do it this way, and he'd listen to you.
• 35:25
SPEAKER_05: If I told him the same thing, he wouldn't listen to me because I'm dad, right?
• 35:29
SPEAKER_05: Um my wife can do can can tell me what I need to.
• 35:33
SPEAKER_05: I don't want to, you know, like you're wrong, but you know, if a professional tells me the exact same thing, maybe I listen a little better.
• 35:40
SPEAKER_05: So that's kind of where that came from with just being able to go in to a spot, somebody that's not gonna judge me and and kind of lay it out there.
• 35:52
SPEAKER_05: Tell me if I'm nuts, tell me if I'm right, um, and actually kind of be honest within myself of these are my feelings and this is how I deal with it.
• 36:03
SPEAKER_05: Um you know, kind of show me the right way.
• 36:06
  SPEAKER_05: So uh it I I didn't I didn't do it for a long time, maybe I don't know, six, eight months.
• 36:14
SPEAKER_05: Um, and I got to a point where I was like, wow, yeah, I feel just so much better um of what I've heard, and and maybe I don't feel bad about the feelings that I have.
• 36:26
SPEAKER_05: And you know, I don't have to please somebody.
• 36:30
SPEAKER_05: Sometimes I do need to please myself and stuff.
• 36:33
SPEAKER_01: Um and um no pun intended.
• 36:37
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
• 36:38
SPEAKER_05: Well uh that's kind of where that counselor hope through that you know, and that and it was, you know, a lot of it um was centered around my relationship with my folks, you know, of me feeling like I had to make it better and getting to a point where it was like you don't have to, you know, fe it you know felt bad for not feeling bad.
• 37:04
SPEAKER_05: And and somebody telling me like, no, what you've done and and and where you're at and and the way that you're working with you know your wife and your kids, your business, everything else, and you're super happy in life, and you're you feel um you feel good in your heart, like then you you don't have to feel bad about that.
• 37:25
SPEAKER_02: So um yeah, wanting to be like liked or trying to get everybody to like you is never gonna happen in life, I learned.
• 37:32
SPEAKER_02: And um, as you're saying these things, a couple of the couple of these like mantras that I've been taught in my life that really help that maybe help might help help uh might help in our dad is um it's okay to say you don't know, but not okay not to do anything about it, is one that comes to mind a lot.
• 37:46
SPEAKER_02: And the other one is when someone asks me, Casey, do you want to be right or do you want to get what you want?
• 37:50
SPEAKER_02: And it I love that piece of advice because I talk to my kids about it, talk to my clients I do exactly coaching for, and when we focus on being right, sometimes it's our ego getting in the way, but getting what we want is like slowing down, being curious.
• 38:02
SPEAKER_02: And sometimes when someone's not seeing what we see, they just either they don't see it.
• 38:07
SPEAKER_02: That's why asking questions is and using curiosity is like a freaking superpower.
• 38:13
SPEAKER_02: Um, I think other daily habits just like of whether it's you gr you do and you write in a gratitude journal in the morning, or you exercise, or some people, church is important.
• 38:22
SPEAKER_02: Maybe you pray every day, maybe you go to your Bible every day, whatever it is.
• 38:25
SPEAKER_02: But I think like trying to find like these um uh uh I guess or schedules that you can kind of stick to that allows us to be our best version of ourselves.
• 38:35
SPEAKER_02: Um but also I think what you also did is where you showed yourself grace and just like, hey, um because everybody's feelings are your feelings and they're yours for a reason.
• 38:45
SPEAKER_02: And if someone wants to try to judge those feelings, um that's that's on them, not on you.
• 38:51
SPEAKER_02: And I learned another thing I learned that I don't know if this will speak to, but like the difference between I read this book on forgiveness in my 30s, and and so forgiveness takes you, reconciliation takes you and somebody else.
• 39:03
SPEAKER_02: So if you like, let's say you forgive your parents, that's you're good, you're good.
• 39:06
SPEAKER_02: At least you get that negative energy out of you, but like reconciliation is gonna take them too.
• 39:09
SPEAKER_02: They gotta have a seat at the table there.
• 39:12
SPEAKER_02: And I think it's sometimes if someone, quote unquote, does us wrong, I can forgive them, but it doesn't mean I'm gonna go out of my way to be best friends anymore.
• 39:18
SPEAKER_02: I've I've someone showed their their side to them that oh, I don't know if I like that side of them.
• 39:22
SPEAKER_02: I'll forgive them, but until I see a change in behavior, I'm not gonna want to try to go out of my way to I wanna I wanna spend time with people, and I'm my kids this like spend time with people that make you feel good, that challenge you in a good, healthy way, that bring out the best in you.
• 39:35
SPEAKER_02: And if if you're hanging out with people that just like you're constantly like second-guessing yourself, probably not someone you should be hanging out with.
• 39:41
  SPEAKER_02: That's okay.
• 39:43
  SPEAKER_02: You know?
• 39:44
SPEAKER_02: Um one thing I want to talk about, I think it's gonna be cool for for uh people is like career change.
• 39:50
SPEAKER_02: You know, when I you and I first met, you were doing like you're like a GM of like if I remember correctly, like trailer, like selling trailers and and then uh yeah, that was probably the first time we met.
• 40:00
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 40:01
SPEAKER_02: But then you you went you went in, then you somehow then somehow you decide to open up Regal Regal Auto Care.
• 40:07
SPEAKER_02: If you're in the Auburn area, we'll make sure they're tagged in the show notes, everybody, so you can go.
• 40:10
SPEAKER_02: He takes care of them.
• 40:11
SPEAKER_02: And Corey is like the king of customer service.
• 40:13
SPEAKER_02: He I've seen it all the time.
• 40:15
SPEAKER_02: Um, but like talk about that journey of you know, whenever you were, whatever, probably in your 30s.
• 40:23
SPEAKER_02: Make first change, maybe talk about some of the ups and downs.
• 40:27
SPEAKER_05: So it started uh it started before that.
• 40:30
SPEAKER_05: Started um, I was a big service industry guy.
• 40:33
SPEAKER_05: I worked at a bunch of different restaurants, um, and from the very bottom in the dish pit to uh you know managing roles.
• 40:44
SPEAKER_05: And um from you know Austin Market again, a quick service place.
• 40:50
SPEAKER_05: I worked at you know, pizza parlor, uh Brad Robin, um the Sailor's Lodge.
• 40:57
SPEAKER_05: I did uh um I did uh room service, um uh fine dining, steakhouse.
• 41:06
SPEAKER_05: So like service was my thing.
• 41:11
  SPEAKER_05: I really loved service.
• 41:12
SPEAKER_05: And it was a Daniels broiler, Tosh and I were four weeks from getting married.
• 41:17
  SPEAKER_05: I'm 23 years old.
• 41:19
SPEAKER_05: I make good money, I have a good um good schedule.
• 41:24
SPEAKER_05: I was thinking I was I was actually working three jobs at the time.
• 41:27
SPEAKER_05: Um, but that's just I I've never minded not or never had a problem working.
• 41:34
SPEAKER_05: So I was working a bunch, but I was in service.
• 41:36
SPEAKER_05: There was a guy there, and I had to ask him, he had six kids.
• 41:40
SPEAKER_05: We worked at Daniel, like I was living in Maple Valley working in Bellevue.
• 41:44
SPEAKER_05: I'd get home at 2:30, three o'clock in the morning.
• 41:46
SPEAKER_05: And I, you know, on this schedule, I asked, Jeff, how do you ever see your kid?
• 41:51
SPEAKER_05: You know, and I'm a month away from getting married, 23 years old.
• 41:53
SPEAKER_05: And he said, Well, you know, I get home, we keep him homeschooled so I can get up and see him for a couple hours before I come to work.
• 41:59
SPEAKER_05: I was like, wow, that sounds awful.
• 42:01
SPEAKER_05: I ended up putting in my note as I got out of there, right?
• 42:04
SPEAKER_05: And so I went, um, I I went to work um uh selling trailers, and um I because I had that as a part-time gig.
• 42:14
SPEAKER_05: So I asked him today, hey, can I go full shirt and go full?
• 42:16
SPEAKER_05: So we did that for a little bit.
• 42:18
SPEAKER_05: I was like, yeah, this isn't really working out the way I wanted it to work out.
• 42:20
SPEAKER_05: So I went to work with my dad uh in construction and learned that business.
• 42:24
SPEAKER_05: So I did that for uh like eight years, and uh I learned a ton of skills, um management skills, big projects, big contract negotiations, uh how to file things and make them so you can find them, right?
• 42:43
SPEAKER_05: Um things that I probably wouldn't learn in college if I would have gone, but you know, I wasn't super good.
• 42:48
SPEAKER_05: So um I I learned some great skills in there, but the it got to the point in construction where all I did was argue with people.
• 42:59
SPEAKER_05: Um it was like who's at fault?
• 43:01
SPEAKER_05: And it was just so stressful.
• 43:04
  SPEAKER_05: Like, I I just don't I don't feel good about things.
• 43:08
SPEAKER_05: This is what I want.
• 43:09
SPEAKER_05: So it was like, what am I gonna do?
• 43:10
SPEAKER_05: I gotta do something else.
• 43:12
SPEAKER_05: Um, there was some falling out there with the family and all that other, so it was like kind of change.
• 43:17
SPEAKER_05: I went back to the my job selling trailers and selling cars, had a deal, handshake deal with that person that uh I would be able to buy that shop.
• 43:26
SPEAKER_05: So I I poured myself into it 18 months later, it's like hey, let's do this.
• 43:31
SPEAKER_05: Magically the deal tripled in value.
• 43:34
SPEAKER_05: Of course, I didn't have anything in writing to hold that, so uh not wanting to you know work for somebody, wanting to be my own, you know, my own business owner because I liked that part.
• 43:50
SPEAKER_05: Um, it was I gotta find somewhere.
• 43:53
SPEAKER_05: And it took about a year and a half, um six months to find the place.
• 44:00
SPEAKER_05: A year to close on the deal um to buy Regal Auto Care in Auburn.
• 44:05
SPEAKER_05: The regals that took a chance on me, uh, I am forever indebted to because um I had to take everything I had out of my 401ks just to get minimal down payment to get the SPA loan.
• 44:24
SPEAKER_05: Um, and then at the 11th hour, the bank came in and said, We're gonna have to get more down.
• 44:32
SPEAKER_05: I didn't have that, and so the Regals had to take a chance on me to lower their price and believe that I would pay them back, um, even though it wasn't gonna be in the conference, that I would pay them back after.
• 44:48
SPEAKER_05: I do feel like I'm a man of my word, um, but they don't, you know, and it was a big number that they had to take that that leap of faith on.
• 44:58
SPEAKER_05: Um, they told me they prayed about it, and that I was the right one to do it, and I'm so thankful that they did, um, because we're just about to celebrate 10 years.
• 45:09
  SPEAKER_01: Wow.
• 45:09
SPEAKER_05: Um, they gave me 20 years to pay back that loan to them on the back side, and I paid it off in eight.
• 45:16
SPEAKER_05: So it was really cool.
• 45:18
SPEAKER_05: It was actually the first time that Dan had come back to the store since he moved months after selling it.
• 45:24
SPEAKER_05: It had been eight and a half years.
• 45:25
SPEAKER_05: He walked through the door.
• 45:26
SPEAKER_05: I happened to be standing there.
• 45:28
SPEAKER_05: I was like, Oh my gosh, I haven't seen you in so long.
• 45:30
SPEAKER_05: And they said, Hold on, I got something for you.
• 45:32
SPEAKER_05: I ran to my back office, opened up the computer.
• 45:35
SPEAKER_05: How much do I owe?
• 45:36
SPEAKER_05: Hand wrote a check for for the last amount that I owed.
• 45:40
SPEAKER_05: I went out and I told them I did.
• 45:42
SPEAKER_05: I always plan to handwrite this check.
• 45:43
SPEAKER_05: Never thought I'd get to hand it to you personally and shake your hand and say, Thank you for believing in me to be this this person to take this over.
• 45:51
SPEAKER_05: So um but I'm I'm forever in debt to them to allow that.
• 45:57
SPEAKER_05: But it was to actually make that decision and having those questions in my mind of oh boy, can I do this?
• 46:05
  SPEAKER_05: Can I roll everything I have?
• 46:08
SPEAKER_05: And you know, three kids that were uh like four, six, and nine at the time, and I'm the only income.
• 46:18
SPEAKER_05: And uh it was a it was a very nerve-wracking time.
• 46:23
SPEAKER_05: Um my wife believed in me, I believed in myself.
• 46:27
SPEAKER_05: Uh, I was not going to fail.
• 46:30
SPEAKER_05: And um I was just gonna do whatever it took.
• 46:34
SPEAKER_05: And for years, I mean, shoot, I worked six days a week uh up until uh like a year and a half ago, two years ago now.
• 46:43
SPEAKER_05: Um sadly, she's 14 years old when she was 12 and I decided like I'm gonna close the shop on Saturdays, I'm not gonna work Saturdays anymore.
• 46:52
SPEAKER_05: The job I had for three and a half years before being here, I worked on Saturdays, worked Monday through Saturday for that job.
• 46:59
SPEAKER_05: Um, and I work six days, she's 12 and a half years old, and she never knew me to have a uh a less than a six-day work schedule.
• 47:09
SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, that was it, that's a huge change, and and I'm glad that I've been able to make that and and be there for him.
• 47:17
SPEAKER_02: But um, you ever think back to who taught you the the the skill of believing or this power of belief?
• 47:26
SPEAKER_05: I never have honestly um thought about that.
• 47:29
SPEAKER_05: I've had I've had some really great friends um that that told me, you know, that that w whether we worked together or we went to church together and uh you know we're in a small group together.
• 47:44
SPEAKER_05: I had one friend tell me, like, you're uh you sure you can do this.
• 47:49
SPEAKER_05: And uh he still gives me a hard time.
• 47:51
  SPEAKER_05: Man, I can't believe I'm you did it.
• 47:54
  SPEAKER_05: I didn't think you I didn't think that was a great decision.
• 47:57
SPEAKER_05: Um he kind of wears suspenders with his belt though, so he's one of those that's uh real protector, but um, yeah, others were like never a doubt, you know, you were gonna like do what it takes.
• 48:10
SPEAKER_05: And um I guess it's just yeah, I haven't I haven't thought of where it comes from, but I know that that's me and that's in me that I'm I'm gonna do it.
• 48:22
SPEAKER_01: Do your kids know that story?
• 48:24
  SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
• 48:25
  SPEAKER_02: It's awesome.
• 48:26
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so powerful dude.
• 48:28
SPEAKER_02: So everybody, as you know, this is an audio-only podcast behind me you can see the believe sign.
• 48:32
  SPEAKER_05: Yep.
• 48:33
SPEAKER_02: So a little Ted Lasso.
• 48:35
  SPEAKER_02: So but uh but I it's it's there's a multiple there's multiple things in that.
• 48:38
SPEAKER_02: One, it's selfishly for me to remind myself that I believe that I do matters.
• 48:42
SPEAKER_02: Um I when I was 41, I was training hundreds of salespeople.
• 48:48
SPEAKER_02: Um uh this guy, a mentor of mine, said he asked me, Do you believe what you do matters?
• 48:52
  SPEAKER_02: I go, yeah.
• 48:53
SPEAKER_02: He goes, No, I'm gonna ask you, do you truly believe?
• 48:55
SPEAKER_02: And I said, Yeah, he goes, So if you truly believe what you do matters, then you should have confidence to ask anybody a question, do whatever you think that there's belief behind.
• 49:03
SPEAKER_02: And I think as relates to fatherhood, I don't know if enough dads slow down to to teach belief.
• 49:08
SPEAKER_02: Um because sometimes we in the air age of social media where we're it's like comparison, which is a thief of joy, and you're you're you know, which I that's why one thing I hate about social media is um but if you but but believing and and teaching belief to a kid, and I think that's what one of the joys I got out of coaching early was there was a kid maybe that wasn't confident, but just trying to find something to teach belief.
• 49:31
SPEAKER_02: Man, hey, you're one of the fastest kids out here, or man, what way to hustle, or do just something to like, hey man, I believe in you.
• 49:38
  SPEAKER_02: Let's go.
• 49:39
  SPEAKER_05: That's uh I haven't heard that one.
• 49:41
SPEAKER_05: They believing or is the uh the thief of joy, the comparison is the thief of joy.
• 49:46
  SPEAKER_05: I haven't heard that.
• 49:47
  SPEAKER_05: Fantastic.
• 49:48
SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, little mantras like that do a lot.
• 49:53
SPEAKER_05: I uh I started off and I say it every day when when somebody asks me, you know, what's going on or how you doing and whatnot, best day ever.
• 50:01
SPEAKER_05: Doesn't matter what it is, it's best day ever.
• 50:04
SPEAKER_05: Sometimes said with a different tone, uh, sometimes excited, sometimes sarcastic, but really like best day ever is uh is my thing.
• 50:13
SPEAKER_05: I've tried to put that into my kids.
• 50:14
SPEAKER_05: I love the comparison as the thief of joy, um, because so many of them do.
• 50:20
SPEAKER_05: Um and and seeing when when they are just out there to have fun and you know, like compare compare to your own level of expectation, not to somebody else's.
• 50:33
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, I think it's I always get this messed up.
• 50:36
SPEAKER_02: I probably should research the references next thing I want to say multiple times.
• 50:38
  SPEAKER_02: It's either Joe Montana's dad or Tom Brady's.
• 50:40
  SPEAKER_02: I think it's Joe Montana's dad.
• 50:41
SPEAKER_02: He said, Do you want to be your best or do you want to be the best?
• 50:45
SPEAKER_02: And to me, it's a super easy answer.
• 50:47
SPEAKER_02: Most a lot of people go, I'll be the best.
• 50:49
SPEAKER_02: Like, well, how are you gonna control that?
• 50:51
SPEAKER_02: But if you're your best, because you my best might never be Corey's best.
• 50:55
SPEAKER_02: Maybe Corey's way better at something than I am.
• 50:57
  SPEAKER_02: Like, that's okay.
• 50:58
SPEAKER_02: But like my best might be better than Susie's or Bob's or whatever, or this thing.
• 51:02
SPEAKER_02: So it's like being your best, whatever it is, and then giving yourself grace and just be comfortable with that.
• 51:09
SPEAKER_02: Like what what to mean it's a much better roadmap for happiness in life than constantly living in anxiety and trying to be someone you're not.
• 51:19
SPEAKER_02: It's like just you know, celebrate who you are, and we all got gifts, we all got put on surf for a reason.
• 51:25
SPEAKER_02: Like, go try to find it.
• 51:26
SPEAKER_02: And um, but yeah, I love that you said believe because that's a that's a hot bub for me, as you can tell.
• 51:31
SPEAKER_02: I freaking love that word.
• 51:32
SPEAKER_02: Um, if you were to um you know, 10 years from now, and you're you're on the golf course, and someone says, Man, if there could be three words to describe the cutlip kids, they are blank, blank, and blank.
• 51:48
SPEAKER_02: Tell me what you you want them to say.
• 51:50
  SPEAKER_05: Oh boy.
• 51:52
SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't know that I can come up with three, you know, genuine uh loving and trustworthy.
• 52:00
  SPEAKER_01: Boom.
• 52:01
  SPEAKER_05: Love it.
• 52:02
SPEAKER_05: And I don't think I gotta wait ten years, though.
• 52:05
  SPEAKER_01: There you go.
• 52:06
SPEAKER_05: You know, I I know that uh that they already are there, so let's let's keep them on track.
• 52:11
SPEAKER_05: I have a um I have a just a fantastic picture um on another screen.
• 52:19
SPEAKER_05: I have a third screen up on my on my wall, and it is me and the three kids at the the duck uh playoff game in Eugene this last winter.
• 52:31
SPEAKER_05: And uh, I mean I I just look at it every day and it'll always be there, and um that's it that's who they are, and I think they are always love it.
• 52:42
SPEAKER_02: Um how can we make people aware of Regal Auto Care?
• 52:47
SPEAKER_02: How can I make it easy for people to find?
• 52:48
SPEAKER_02: If you live in the Seattle area, the you know, near the Auburn area, anybody less than locally to the state, how can we make easy uh easy to find and and what can you how can you help them?
• 52:59
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, okay, so Instagram is at Regal Auto, Facebook is at Regal AutoPair.
• 53:06
SPEAKER_05: Um I mean the way that I help them, this is what we do, this is what we tell them people say, hey, what do you do?
• 53:14
SPEAKER_05: And I say, uh, the only thing that we do or that when it comes to car service and repair, only thing we don't do is semi.
• 53:23
SPEAKER_05: And if you ask my service manager, Jared, he's gonna tell you we do semi, right?
• 53:27
SPEAKER_05: So it's literally um, I've kind of had this don't say no um style for uh the last nearly 10 years here.
• 53:38
SPEAKER_05: Um, because even if I can't do it, I know the guy that's gonna get done for you via one-stop shop.
• 53:42
SPEAKER_05: But we do a ton of stuff here.
• 53:44
SPEAKER_05: We do custom, we do simple repairs and oil changes, we do major repairs, engine transmission, tires, suspension.
• 53:53
SPEAKER_05: It doesn't really matter what it is, like we do it's honestly so there's something with somebody's car, um, I'm surely gonna be able to help you out or steer you in the right direct right direction.
• 54:03
SPEAKER_05: You heard me earlier tell you, I'm gonna tell you what you need to hear, what not what you want to hear.
• 54:08
SPEAKER_05: Uh, and the idea behind that is uh you got you have to make the decision on what works for you and and your budget and whatnot.
• 54:19
SPEAKER_05: But the last thing I want to do is tell somebody like, oh, your car's in great shape, and then you know, 500 miles down the road, something happens, and it's like just because I didn't want to tell you, you know, hey, it's not my thing.
• 54:30
SPEAKER_05: I'm you need to be made away.
• 54:33
SPEAKER_05: So that's what my team has been coached on for a long time.
• 54:37
SPEAKER_05: Um is uh given a total health status so uh somebody can be comfortable.
• 54:44
SPEAKER_05: I have great connections uh throughout the country just from some of the conferences I've been to.
• 54:50
SPEAKER_05: So um my loyal clients that have their daughters go to college and then if something happens, I mean I've had people call me and that you know their daughter's broken down in Denver, and I go turns out I know a guy, you know.
• 55:04
SPEAKER_05: So um that's been huge, uh a huge joy for me is to be able to help people in in that manner as well.
• 55:15
SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, located in Auburn, you know where Emerald Downs is?
• 55:19
SPEAKER_05: Just get on over on over to Auburn Way and you're gonna be right in line.
• 55:23
SPEAKER_02: So go bet on the ponies, get your tires rotated.
• 55:26
SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as as long as you can.
• 55:28
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 55:30
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 55:32
  SPEAKER_02: Okay.
• 55:32
SPEAKER_02: Um, if you were to summarize everything that we talked about today, that a dad, maybe a mom, um, is listening, that we could summarize um into maybe three actionable, two or three actionable things that uh a dad could take and apply in their own huddle to become a better leader of his home.
• 55:50
SPEAKER_02: Tell me what comes to mind.
• 55:52
SPEAKER_05: Um like the you know, the huddle.
• 55:56
SPEAKER_05: We uh I've even put tried to put my employees into that of doing a daily huddle type deal.
• 56:01
SPEAKER_05: So we're gonna daily huddle and I'm gonna try and think about this.
• 56:05
SPEAKER_05: Uh I I would tell somebody, you know, lean back on being the yes dad, you know, uh, or the yes qb.
• 56:12
SPEAKER_05: Like, we're gonna find a way to make this happen because uh as you've said earlier as well, they're gonna be out of the house.
• 56:20
SPEAKER_05: You know, technically take what you can get.
• 56:23
SPEAKER_05: My wife said it years ago of like there's only three summers left.
• 56:27
SPEAKER_05: You know, it's like, when what do you mean there's three summers left?
• 56:31
SPEAKER_05: And then all of a sudden it was like, you know, oh, there's two summers left, and you're like, oh wow, it really does go fast.
• 56:37
SPEAKER_05: So being that uh being that yes person, make sure that we get it done.
• 56:42
SPEAKER_05: Um believe we'll throw it to that, is believe in yourself, believe in the people that you've put around yourself to to know that um they're genuine, you can count on them, um you know, uh check the ego with them, uh just just be you and um but believe in yourself to do that, and then um have some humility.
• 57:12
SPEAKER_05: Um you don't have to know it all right now.
• 57:16
SPEAKER_05: You can get some direction, uh, whether it's uh professional or another way.
• 57:23
SPEAKER_05: Um doesn't make you a bad person to ask for help.
• 57:26
SPEAKER_05: And we tell that to our kids, you know, if if if you're in trouble, you ask for help, and um, or if you just need simple direction, you know, and so uh but you have to be honest with yourself to do that because it's not gonna make any difference if you go and uh you ask somebody for help, but you're not giving them the whole story.
• 57:47
SPEAKER_05: So I think um of having the humility there uh of just laying it out and you know, asking for help and being open to being open to what comes past.
• 58:00
SPEAKER_05: Uh you might not have to accept and absorb it immediately, but like have that open mind to think about it and look within and say, Oh yeah, maybe I was wrong.
