- 0:54Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We must add detective to your list of accomplishments. Your
- 1:32Speaker 2: regular Sherlock Holmes.
- 1:44Speaker 4: What's up and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I'm Brian.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And I'm Misty.
- 1:46Speaker 4: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:49Speaker 4: the outskirts of Wonderfest.
- 1:51Speaker 1: From the parking lot across the street.
- 1:53Speaker 4: That's it. I can see it right there. I'm pointing
- 1:55Speaker 4: at it. You got to see, right? So we are
- 1:58Speaker 4: back once again. Our annual stop. Granted, there was a
- 2:02Speaker 4: couple of years there, but that doesn't count because the
- 2:04Speaker 4: whole world stopped doing things. So we were back last
- 2:07Speaker 4: year and we are back again today.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Fish pimp.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Have you figured that out yet? No. There's a fish
- 2:17Speaker 4: pimp in the parking lot somewhere. We're not sure. Once again,
- 2:20Speaker 4: much like last outing, We're trying to decide if it's
- 2:23Speaker 4: a reference to something we just don't know because we're
- 2:25Speaker 4: not cool, or if somebody's just weird and doing their
- 2:27Speaker 4: own thing.
- 2:28Speaker 1: That's my guess.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Yeah, could be. Anyway, fish pimp. Otherwise, how's it going, Misty?
- 2:36Speaker 1: It's going okay.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Hmm.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Are we talking about stuff that we watched or partaked
- 2:43Speaker 1: in in any fashion?
- 2:45Speaker 4: Yes. Have you seen anything lately?
- 2:48Speaker 1: I did see something.
- 2:50Speaker 5: Boyfriend.
- 2:51Speaker 4: If you see something, say something.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I did.
- 2:52Speaker 6: I will.
- 2:54Speaker 1: After the death of... What's the guy who died recently?
- 2:57Speaker 1: This is going to take a while.
- 2:58Speaker 4: I know. I was like, wait. A lot of people died.
- 3:01Speaker 7: Which... Tremors.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Wait.
- 3:05Speaker 4: It's in there. Fred. Fred Ward. Kevin Bacon. Fred Ward.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Michael Gross in Tremors.
- 3:14Speaker 1: After the death of Fred Ward, boyfriend was mind blown
- 3:17Speaker 1: that I had not seen Tremors.
- 3:19Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 4: That is a little weird. It's kind of up your alley.
- 3:22Speaker 1: He's like, how have you not seen Tremors? So I
- 3:24Speaker 1: had to go out. Of course, I had to buy Tremors.
- 3:26Speaker 1: He didn't buy Tremors. I bought Tremors at the bookstore.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Am I the only one in the world who does
- 3:33Speaker 1: not ever see the attraction of Kevin Bacon? He was
- 3:36Speaker 1: never an attractive dude.
- 3:37Speaker 4: I like him. I can see, again, like your foot loose,
- 3:42Speaker 4: I can see girls kind of being into him. He's
- 3:44Speaker 4: still kind of awkward looking.
- 3:45Speaker 7: Oh, dude.
- 3:46Speaker 8: But.
- 3:46Speaker 4: He's a likable dude, so that helps him.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Fred Ward guy was way hotter. I was watching and
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm like, maybe I'm just getting old, but god damn,
- 3:54Speaker 1: Fred Ward is way hotter than Kevin Bacon is.
- 3:57Speaker 7: Not hot.
- 3:59Speaker 1: He's pretty cool, but not hot.
- 4:00Speaker 4: I saw that Mr. Keaton hanging out in the basement
- 4:02Speaker 4: with his gun collection.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I was envious and jealous of that collection he had
- 4:07Speaker 1: going on in his little bunker.
- 4:08Speaker 4: You want the elephant gun.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I was at the bookstore trying to purchase trimmers. I'm like,
- 4:16Speaker 1: How many goddamn Tremors are there?
- 4:18Speaker 4: A lot, actually. There's like, I don't even... There were,
- 4:21Speaker 4: the original run, there was like three, and then they
- 4:24Speaker 4: did the going back in time one, so there were
- 4:26Speaker 4: four in that first run, and that was pretty much it.
- 4:29Speaker 4: And then, I mean, they're pretty much all Michael Gross.
- 4:31Speaker 4: But then Michael Gross came back recently and did like
- 4:34Speaker 4: at least two more with, what's his face?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Jamie Kennedy?
- 4:37Speaker 4: Jamie Kennedy's in the first one at least, if not
- 4:40Speaker 4: the second one. I have not gotten to the more
- 4:42Speaker 4: recent ones. I've seen a lot of, I know I
- 4:44Speaker 4: saw the second one. I feel like I watched the
- 4:46Speaker 4: third one. I kind of remember parts of the going
- 4:49Speaker 4: back in time when it's like the old West tremors
- 4:52Speaker 4: or something in the fourth one. I don't remember, but
- 4:53Speaker 4: then the very.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Last one apparently has John header in it. Heater header.
- 4:57Speaker 1: How do you think it's here? I had a heater,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but yeah, only in dynamite.
- 5:01Speaker 4: I think I, yeah, I think I remember seeing him
- 5:02Speaker 4: on the, on the advertising and I was like, all right,
- 5:05Speaker 4: at some point I'm going to have to get around
- 5:06Speaker 4: to watching these. I love the first one. Michael gross
- 5:08Speaker 4: is fun. So he's on all these like, eventually i'll
- 5:12Speaker 4: have to get around to the rest of them but
- 5:14Speaker 4: so far just haven't hit those new ones yet that.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Texted boyfriend because he was out in the car running
- 5:18Speaker 1: down my battery and my i'm having the lights on
- 5:21Speaker 1: i'm like so please tell me we just need the
- 5:23Speaker 1: first one the first one's the only one i need
- 5:24Speaker 1: to see right because i don't know if i could
- 5:26Speaker 1: handle these movies that have jamie kennedy in them just
- 5:28Speaker 1: don't get me wrong i love jamie kennedy in scream.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Jamie kennedy was good at a time and a place
- 5:34Speaker 4: and then that was way too far from scream.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Anything out of the scream universe i don't need jamie
- 5:39Speaker 1: kennedy there.
- 5:40Speaker 4: By the time you hit his dumb TV show, I
- 5:41Speaker 4: was already like, whoa.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Wasn't there a Tremors TV show, too?
- 5:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm pretty sure they tried to do that, too.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I did not. There's so many TV shows, I don't
- 5:51Speaker 4: even realize they're there and they're already on by the
- 5:53Speaker 4: time I'm like, oh, that was the thing. I don't
- 5:56Speaker 4: even get started on most TV shows.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Either way, I was just like, I enjoyed it. It
- 6:00Speaker 1: was a fun movie.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Well, not to jump off of yours, you can continue,
- 6:04Speaker 4: but because you brought up that reason, I did immediately,
- 6:07Speaker 4: because everybody was posting stuff that day, and they were
- 6:11Speaker 4: all posting either Tremors or Remo Williams.
- 6:15Speaker 7: Who?
- 6:15Speaker 4: Which, that's what most people say, except the super hardcore fans.
- 6:19Speaker 4: There's some hardcore Remo Williams, colon, the adventure begins. They
- 6:23Speaker 4: were trying to do like a start of a whole series.
- 6:25Speaker 4: So they even gave it a title that's The Adventure Begins.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Like they were going to do a whole big series
- 6:30Speaker 4: of these action movies with Remo Williams starring Fred Ward.
- 6:34Speaker 4: And that was the first one.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And the only one.
- 6:37Speaker 4: And the only one. So, yeah. I don't remember much
- 6:42Speaker 4: about that. So I never got into that. I remember
- 6:44Speaker 4: it was at the, it must have been like 84
- 6:47Speaker 4: or shooting in 83. Because the only thing I remember
- 6:50Speaker 4: is a lot of it takes place at the There's
- 6:52Speaker 4: some sort of big action set piece on the Statue
- 6:54Speaker 4: of Liberty. And it's when they had the big scaffolding
- 6:57Speaker 4: up and they were like doing a resurface and clean
- 6:59Speaker 4: up job on her. Like right around 84. To make
- 7:01Speaker 4: her less green.
- 7:02Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Or to make her more green. I don't know what
- 7:04Speaker 4: they were shooting for. But so they were doing a
- 7:06Speaker 4: cleanup on her around that time. And the scaffolding stuff
- 7:10Speaker 4: was all there. So that's mostly what I remember about
- 7:13Speaker 4: Remo Williams. I do plan to go back and rewatch it.
- 7:16Speaker 4: So calm down. Hardcore Remo Williams fans. But my go-to,
- 7:20Speaker 4: that's the thing. Everybody was posting all that stuff that
- 7:22Speaker 4: he was in and he's good at all of it.
- 7:24Speaker 4: But I was like, my first thought, and it's weird
- 7:27Speaker 4: because he's not a major player in this movie. The
- 7:31Speaker 4: player is one of my, I love that movie anyway.
- 7:35Speaker 4: And he's like a minor character in it. But he's
- 7:37Speaker 4: got like this great part in the beginning when they're
- 7:40Speaker 4: doing this super awesome opening shot. And then he comes
- 7:43Speaker 4: back later and he's just really cool. And he's wearing
- 7:45Speaker 4: this fancy suit. Is he hot? It was only a
- 7:49Speaker 4: few years after Tremors and he's wearing like he is
- 7:51Speaker 4: like an executive. Well, he's the security guy, but he
- 7:53Speaker 4: dresses like he's wearing an executive business suit. So he's
- 7:57Speaker 4: got this fancy business suit on. So he looks pretty,
- 8:00Speaker 4: looks pretty smooth. Looks pretty smooth. So yeah, that was
- 8:04Speaker 4: the one that night after everybody was posting that stuff.
- 8:07Speaker 4: I'm like, you know what I want to watch? I
- 8:08Speaker 4: want to watch the player. So I watched Fred Ward
- 8:11Speaker 4: in the player. And then I remembered, yeah, he really
- 8:13Speaker 4: is not in this very much.
- 8:14Speaker 1: It is.
- 8:15Speaker 4: A minor role, but he is damn good in it. So,
- 8:19Speaker 4: I love that movie.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Never seen it.
- 8:20Speaker 4: It is a grim... Like, I love what's going on.
- 8:24Speaker 4: It's super creative, the way it's put together.
- 8:26Speaker 1: What's it about?
- 8:27Speaker 4: It's a movie producer, and he... It's a pretty good premise. Like,
- 8:32Speaker 4: it's making its own little commentary on Hollywood along the way,
- 8:36Speaker 4: but thrown in the middle of it is like a
- 8:38Speaker 4: weird murder plot. So he keeps getting he's a movie producer.
- 8:41Speaker 4: He works at a big studio. He keeps all he
- 8:43Speaker 4: does is take pitches from from writers all day long.
- 8:46Speaker 4: And he keeps getting these postcards that are like threatening.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I'm going to kill you more or less like all
- 8:51Speaker 4: these threatening little murder messages keep coming to him on postcards.
- 8:55Speaker 4: And so he's trying to figure out who it is.
- 8:58Speaker 4: And then he's asking people, how long do you think
- 9:00Speaker 4: it would take before the man gets dangerous? So he's
- 9:02Speaker 4: going back in time trying to figure out, OK, who
- 9:05Speaker 4: did I talk to that? I turned down that it's
- 9:07Speaker 4: probably them. So he thinks it's a specific writer, and he,
- 9:10Speaker 4: I guess, spoilers for the player, because there's a big
- 9:13Speaker 4: twist that I don't think you're going to care if
- 9:14Speaker 4: I ruin it.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm not going to watch this movie.
- 9:16Speaker 4: You should watch it.
- 9:16Speaker 1: It's good. Who's the star?
- 9:18Speaker 4: Tim Robbins. Younger Tim Robbins. Now he's an old man,
- 9:22Speaker 4: but he was still kind of young then. So, yeah,
- 9:26Speaker 4: then he finds out where this writer is, and he's
- 9:31Speaker 4: going to see a movie. He goes to the movie and, like,
- 9:34Speaker 4: pretends to run into him. And then, like, he's like, ah,
- 9:37Speaker 4: stop sending me those. And, like, so they end up
- 9:39Speaker 4: trying to, like, make peace and go have a drink and, like,
- 9:42Speaker 4: talk it over. And, like, they still end up, like, leaving.
- 9:46Speaker 4: The writer gets mad at him, leaving. They're back out
- 9:48Speaker 4: in the parking lot. He, like, accidentally, like, knocks Tim
- 9:52Speaker 4: Robbins off this, like, embankment thing in the parking lot.
- 9:56Speaker 4: And he gets up and, like, throws him down and, like,
- 9:58Speaker 4: shoves him and ends up murdering him.
- 10:00Speaker 3: The guy.
- 10:00Speaker 4: He, like, kills him and, like, drowns him in a puddle, essentially.
- 10:05Speaker 4: So then nobody sees it. So he just smashes out
- 10:08Speaker 4: the guy's car window and goes home. So then it's
- 10:12Speaker 4: like he thinks he killed her.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Now I don't need to see the movie.
- 10:15Speaker 4: No, that's the beginning. I mean, that's pretty early on.
- 10:18Speaker 4: So the whole thing is like this big cover-up. It's like,
- 10:20Speaker 4: so how do I continue going on with my job
- 10:26Speaker 4: and my normal day-to-day life? And he starts to get
- 10:29Speaker 4: interested in the wife or girlfriend, I think they were
- 10:32Speaker 4: just girlfriend, of the writer that he killed. So he's
- 10:36Speaker 4: interested in her. Tasteless? Like I'm saying, it's like it
- 10:40Speaker 4: is so just mean-spirited in the grand scheme of things. Because, yeah,
- 10:45Speaker 4: he just tries to go on with his life. And
- 10:49Speaker 4: then there's like some weird dude hanging around. And the
- 10:52Speaker 4: police come to talk to him. So there's like all
- 10:54Speaker 4: this cool stuff going on. So, yeah, it's a great movie.
- 10:58Speaker 4: It's well made. It's Robert Altman, so it's cynical as hell.
- 11:02Speaker 4: And kind of bitter about Hollywood in general. So, definitely,
- 11:06Speaker 4: if you haven't seen it. That twist was pretty early on.
- 11:10Speaker 1: It's no Tremors.
- 11:11Speaker 4: It's not Tremors, I'll give you that.
- 11:13Speaker 1: Reba McIntyre.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Reba is not in this. You do have a ton
- 11:18Speaker 4: of cameos in the player. Everybody that was a big
- 11:20Speaker 4: name in Hollywood has a cameo somewhere in there. But
- 11:23Speaker 4: what's funny is, looking back, they were doing old Hollywood
- 11:26Speaker 4: and early 90s, so most of those people that are
- 11:29Speaker 4: cameos are all dead now. So you have to go, wait,
- 11:32Speaker 4: who was that guy? Anyway, back to yours. What else
- 11:35Speaker 4: have you watched?
- 11:37Speaker 1: Hmm... I don't know that I've watched anything else, but
- 11:41Speaker 1: I did listen to the audio book version of The
- 11:44Speaker 1: Stand by Stephen King.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Bet that went by real quick, didn't it?
- 11:48Speaker 1: Oh, sweet baby Jesus. It took me almost three weeks
- 11:51Speaker 1: to listen to that. 48 hours, give or take, of
- 11:57Speaker 1: The Stand. And it's like, I do want to go
- 11:59Speaker 1: back and re-watch the miniseries.
- 12:03Speaker 4: The old movie? The original miniseries movie?
- 12:05Speaker 1: I kind of want to watch both, because there's a
- 12:07Speaker 1: new one too with... Alexander Skarsgård in it. I don't
- 12:11Speaker 1: know who else is in it. I've said it before
- 12:15Speaker 1: and I'll say it again. Stephen King? Fucking editor. Come
- 12:18Speaker 1: the fuck on.
- 12:19Speaker 4: I say that on a regular basis on this show.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I'm like, he has good ideas. He needs somebody else
- 12:25Speaker 4: there to wrangle that bullshit and put it into a
- 12:28Speaker 4: way more palatable... Just something that you can enjoy and
- 12:33Speaker 4: not just be frustrated by the whole time.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Still, it's like... And apparently all I could get through
- 12:38Speaker 1: the hoopla was the extended version as well.
- 12:43Speaker 4: So not only is it unabridged, it's unabridged plus some
- 12:47Speaker 4: extra crap.
- 12:47Speaker 1: I guess I don't know. I guess maybe it's the unabridged.
- 12:49Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 12:50Speaker 1: There was just after he went back and added more shit.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Do you need to add more shit? It looks like
- 12:56Speaker 4: a phone book as it is.
- 12:57Speaker 1: No shit. And if I ever have to see or
- 13:01Speaker 1: hear the word happy crappy one more goddamn time.
- 13:03Speaker 4: I'm telling you, his weird little sayings that he works in.
- 13:06Speaker 4: I'm just like, we get it. You know bad words.
- 13:09Speaker 4: You're so cool.
- 13:10Speaker 1: He knows bad words, but yet then he wants to
- 13:12Speaker 1: put in stupid shit like made wee wee in my pants.
- 13:15Speaker 1: What the fuck are you talking about?
- 13:17Speaker 4: I don't know. He's a weird old man.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Happy crappy and wee wee.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Before he was an old man, he was a weird
- 13:21Speaker 4: old man. He just said things that normal humans don't say.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I did fast forward and skim through a lot of
- 13:28Speaker 1: the parts that had the kid in it because I
- 13:29Speaker 1: didn't need any of that shit.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Much like regular life, you don't want anything to do
- 13:33Speaker 4: with children.
- 13:34Speaker 1: This wasn't a child. This is an adult dude who
- 13:36Speaker 1: just goes by the kid.
- 13:37Speaker 7: Oh, God.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Is he Billy?
- 13:39Speaker 1: No, but he's the one who said happy crappy all
- 13:40Speaker 1: the time. And I'm just like, this is awful. He's
- 13:43Speaker 1: kind of described as like a rockabilly guy. But then
- 13:45Speaker 1: when the guy who does the voice did it, he
- 13:46Speaker 1: sounded kind of like he was like some old black guy.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Which I'm like, dude.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I mean, that's an original way to be a rockabilly.
- 13:52Speaker 4: I've seen it a few times, but it's not the norm.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Which I'm like, make up your mind. Everything, I just
- 13:58Speaker 1: had to skim through it. Most of that part was
- 14:01Speaker 1: just so uninteresting.
- 14:03Speaker 4: That's my thing with all of, again, I don't read things.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I'm illiterate. But what little I know of his writing,
- 14:10Speaker 4: I'm not thrilled with. But again, I think he has
- 14:12Speaker 4: great concepts. It's like he just needs to. Hand it
- 14:15Speaker 4: to somebody else and let them turn it into something good.
- 14:18Speaker 1: I love a lot of his short stories.
- 14:20Speaker 4: That's the thing.
- 14:21Speaker 1: You can give me the raft all goddamn day.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Maybe he just needs to stick to short stories and
- 14:26Speaker 4: not 10,000 pages.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I mean, the raft is amazing. That's all I need.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I mean, Stephen King will probably get a pass for
- 14:36Speaker 1: life just because of The Raft. Just because I love
- 14:38Speaker 1: the story. I love the creature. Because you were.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Scarred by it.
- 14:41Speaker 1: It traumatized me beyond words. That guy who's in it
- 14:44Speaker 1: is hot. I don't remember his name. I don't know
- 14:47Speaker 1: his name. It's not important that I know his name,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but he's hot.
- 14:50Speaker 4: So did you read The Raft before you saw it?
- 14:52Speaker 4: Or vice versa?
- 14:53Speaker 1: Vice versa.
- 14:54Speaker 4: I saw it like years ago. I mean, that's the
- 14:55Speaker 4: way everything's supposed to go. You watch the movie. That's
- 14:57Speaker 4: the important part. reading books thing I don't know about
- 14:59Speaker 4: that but even.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Still some of the short stories I'm like I don't
- 15:02Speaker 1: need this that's.
- 15:03Speaker 4: What I'm saying the ones I tried to read a
- 15:05Speaker 4: million years ago when I attempted to read stuff I
- 15:07Speaker 4: was like I just don't have patience for this and
- 15:10Speaker 4: even with the books on tape that's what I call
- 15:13Speaker 4: them because I'm an old man but when I got
- 15:14Speaker 4: the books on tape they literally were on tape when
- 15:16Speaker 4: I was getting them but like even then some of
- 15:18Speaker 4: the stuff was just too long and like you would
- 15:20Speaker 4: go on this weird tangent and I'm like I don't
- 15:23Speaker 4: care about this just go back to the original part
- 15:26Speaker 4: of the story that I was interested in which is
- 15:28Speaker 4: usually what they do with the movies, is cut out
- 15:30Speaker 4: the extra nonsense, side stories, and just focus on the
- 15:32Speaker 4: main thing, which is what you should do anyway. I
- 15:36Speaker 4: don't know that I'm the person to tell Stephen King
- 15:37Speaker 4: what to do with his career. Seems like he's done
- 15:40Speaker 4: just fine, but... Editor, Stephen King. That's my take on it.
- 15:44Speaker 1: I need, like... I want to read the entire Stephen
- 15:47Speaker 1: King collection, but I want to do it in, like, the...
- 15:50Speaker 1: Cliff Notes?
- 15:52Speaker 4: The Reader's Digest version. It's super abridged.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I'll just look on the Wikipedia so I can just
- 15:56Speaker 1: get a summary.
- 15:58Speaker 4: Just tell me what happens.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Give me the plot summary of every Stephen King book.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Just wrap this up in a couple minutes for me.
- 16:02Speaker 9: Thanks.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Because I'm like two-thirds of the way through Salem's Lot,
- 16:04Speaker 1: which I've actually read the book Salem's Lot. And I'm
- 16:07Speaker 1: okay with it. There's still some parts that I didn't
- 16:10Speaker 1: really need. But still, it's nowhere near as bloated as
- 16:13Speaker 1: the stand is. I don't care.
- 16:16Speaker 4: I'll say it.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Stephen King? He's okay. He's just... He's not.
- 16:20Speaker 4: I mean, his true calling is that cool rock band
- 16:22Speaker 4: he's in. But then he's also pretty good at writing,
- 16:25Speaker 4: some people say.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Like I said, he just needs to calm it down sometimes.
- 16:31Speaker 1: He just needs to, like, sit and think. Is this necessary?
- 16:36Speaker 1: If it's not, maybe not. Maybe let's leave that part out.
- 16:39Speaker 4: I don't know. I think it comes with, I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 4: I say the same thing about directors and stuff like that.
- 16:46Speaker 4: About once you get successful and nobody tells you no anymore.
- 16:49Speaker 4: I mean, you'll notice when he started as a writer,
- 16:51Speaker 4: he was doing a whole lot of short stories. Once
- 16:54Speaker 4: he got successful, I'm going to write The Stand, and
- 16:57Speaker 4: it's going to be a bajillion pages long. And nobody
- 17:00Speaker 4: told him no.
- 17:00Speaker 1: When I first read The Stand when I was like
- 17:02Speaker 1: 15 or 16, it took me an entire summer.
- 17:06Speaker 4: I don't doubt it, because I know how I used
- 17:08Speaker 4: to read. But little I did back in the olden days,
- 17:11Speaker 4: and it took me forever.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Well, I figure, because I've been listening to the audiobooks
- 17:14Speaker 1: while I'm at work. So I figure I'm kind of like,
- 17:16Speaker 1: I'm not doing anything else. I can't watch TV. Might
- 17:20Speaker 1: as well just listen to this. Because for anybody who
- 17:23Speaker 1: doesn't know, chances are if you have a library, you
- 17:25Speaker 1: can get free shit.
- 17:27Speaker 4: I don't know. Our library fell apart. I used to,
- 17:31Speaker 4: and again, I'm only talking about movies because that's all
- 17:33Speaker 4: I care about. You used to be able not only
- 17:35Speaker 4: to go rent stuff at the library if you physically
- 17:37Speaker 4: went out into the world, but you could get on
- 17:39Speaker 4: board with their connection that they had with, which one
- 17:44Speaker 4: is it? Carousel, I think.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Mine's Hoopla.
- 17:46Speaker 7: Hoopla.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Yeah so you're on a different side with different libraries
- 17:50Speaker 4: but they're like streaming service that they hooked up with
- 17:53Speaker 4: i think is still out there and going on but
- 17:55Speaker 4: when i go to the website now it tells me
- 17:57Speaker 4: your library hasn't updated anything there's no movies anymore and
- 18:01Speaker 4: i was like so they're still functional but i can't
- 18:03Speaker 4: access it because my library fell apart and it's.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Stupid So, yeah, I'm not sure if it's, like, every library, but, like,
- 18:10Speaker 1: I know ours.
- 18:10Speaker 4: I feel like most of them have hooked up with
- 18:12Speaker 4: somebody as far as.
- 18:13Speaker 1: Getting that kind of stuff.
- 18:13Speaker 4: Yeah, ours is Hoopla.
- 18:14Speaker 1: You can get, like, audiobooks, e-books, movies, music. I think there's, like,
- 18:18Speaker 1: a limit on how much you can get, but, I mean,
- 18:21Speaker 1: free shit. I am all about some free shit.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 18:26Speaker 1: What about you? Have you watched any things? God, I
- 18:27Speaker 1: can't think of anything else that I've, uh.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Aside from that, um, I was gonna just, because it
- 18:34Speaker 4: just happened, I'm assuming you didn't immediately start watching stranger
- 18:38Speaker 4: things i don't have netflix that's crazy talk that's kind
- 18:42Speaker 4: of half the reason because i don't watch it near
- 18:45Speaker 4: as much but like this whole year i was like
- 18:47Speaker 4: well i know the new stranger things is coming so
- 18:49Speaker 4: i might as well hang on to it so i
- 18:50Speaker 4: can watch that after that i'll reassess down the line
- 18:54Speaker 4: because i don't watch a ton of others well i
- 18:56Speaker 4: was watching one show but other than that i haven't
- 18:59Speaker 4: watched a ton on netflix lately Until this, you know,
- 19:02Speaker 4: last week they put out like the first half of
- 19:04Speaker 4: the run.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Don't spoiler it for me.
- 19:06Speaker 4: I won't spoiler any of that because it's so new.
- 19:08Speaker 4: But I really liked it. So again, I really liked
- 19:12Speaker 4: the last season. So I think they're.
- 19:14Speaker 1: I don't remember the last season. Did I like it?
- 19:16Speaker 4: It's the mall one. The mall one's fun. How do
- 19:18Speaker 4: you not like hanging out at the ice cream shop
- 19:20Speaker 4: with the dorks?
- 19:20Speaker 1: How cute, what's her face is?
- 19:24Speaker 4: Robin. Thank God she's back.
- 19:27Speaker 1: She's still adorable.
- 19:27Speaker 4: She's even more like neurotic and crazy and. chatty you
- 19:32Speaker 4: see her even more in like her full-on hyper mode
- 19:35Speaker 4: in this one not all the time but you get
- 19:37Speaker 4: a little bit more of it than i think you
- 19:38Speaker 4: got in the third season she's so cute she is
- 19:41Speaker 4: adorable so yep we get and you know he's so
- 19:45Speaker 4: grown on me i remember just being so annoyed with
- 19:47Speaker 4: steve in that first season i like steve But, like,
- 19:50Speaker 4: the second season when he became super babysitter, I was like,
- 19:52Speaker 4: all right, I'm coming around on this Steve guy. I'm
- 19:54Speaker 4: pro Steve.
- 19:55Speaker 1: I'm anti of the other guy. I don't like his face.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Well, there's not much to get on board with this season.
- 19:59Speaker 4: He is not, by nature of the story, he's not
- 20:03Speaker 4: super cool or doing anything. I don't even remember now.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Whoever she was with.
- 20:09Speaker 1: I keep wanting to call him Charlie, but that could
- 20:10Speaker 1: be his real name.
- 20:12Speaker 4: I don't remember. But yeah, he's not all that functional
- 20:15Speaker 4: in this year.
- 20:15Speaker 1: He just looks so gross in the real world.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Yeah. And they give him kind of a reason. I
- 20:20Speaker 4: don't know. They're having issues this year. But it's pretty great.
- 20:24Speaker 1: Is it drugs? Because that's his excuse in the real world.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Oh, well then, yeah. That's, again, not spoiling anything, but
- 20:31Speaker 4: his new friend that he hangs out with is a
- 20:33Speaker 4: full-on stoner dude. And he's kind of just out of
- 20:36Speaker 4: it a lot. As the character, he is kind of
- 20:39Speaker 4: out of it half of the scenes. Because they're both
- 20:42Speaker 4: kind of toked up all day long. So, anyway, that's
- 20:45Speaker 4: a minor detail. You don't really get that much with him.
- 20:47Speaker 4: I can't remember that guy's name.
- 20:48Speaker 1: It's going to drive me nuts.
- 20:49Speaker 4: The rest of it's pretty good. Yeah, I'm enjoying it
- 20:53Speaker 4: quite a bit. I guess it won't ruin anything. Again,
- 20:58Speaker 4: you can tell very distinctive things that they pull from.
- 21:02Speaker 4: They're not subtle about their things that they very openly
- 21:05Speaker 4: kind of borrow from. Even the first one, it's like
- 21:08Speaker 4: tons of E.T. and Goonies and crap like that.
- 21:11Speaker 1: His name is Jonathan. In the rural world, his name
- 21:13Speaker 1: is Charlie. And I think he's had a run-in with
- 21:15Speaker 1: a lot of stuff with drugs. I don't like him.
- 21:18Speaker 4: Maybe that's why they wrote that into the season. Like, dude,
- 21:20Speaker 4: you look wasted. You look trashed, buddy. Because he does
- 21:24Speaker 4: look rough in this one, but it fits the character now.
- 21:28Speaker 4: But no, this one definitely has way more of a
- 21:29Speaker 4: horror movie vibe to it.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 21:32Speaker 4: Maybe because the kids are getting older, so now it
- 21:34Speaker 4: can be a little more slasher-y than the, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 4: just crazy E.T. space crossover stuff. But now, yeah, it's
- 21:41Speaker 4: definitely way more horror movie, and kind of my favorite
- 21:45Speaker 4: of the slasher bunch is Freddy anyway. Definitely a lot
- 21:48Speaker 4: of Freddy-themed kind of things going on. There's a lot
- 21:52Speaker 4: of Nightmare on Elm Street in this season. Awesome. And
- 21:54Speaker 4: at first I was like... Am I just reading into that?
- 21:58Speaker 4: Do I just feel like it's a lot of Nightmare
- 21:59Speaker 4: on Elm Street? And then they brought in their guest
- 22:01Speaker 4: star for this season. Which, again, I'm not really spoiling anything.
- 22:06Speaker 4: It's Robert Englund. So I'm like, okay, they're fully owning
- 22:09Speaker 4: up to the fact that they're borrowing a whole lot
- 22:11Speaker 4: from Nightmare on Elm Street, the series as a whole.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Because it's, yeah, it's just kind of the general concepts
- 22:16Speaker 4: and the way that they go about doing stuff. Yeah,
- 22:19Speaker 4: so maybe it helps that I'm a big fan of
- 22:21Speaker 4: all the Nightmare on Elm Street movies.
- 22:23Speaker 1: All of them?
- 22:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 4: For the most part. The first run. It's been a
- 22:27Speaker 4: long time since I've watched most of those sequels, but
- 22:30Speaker 4: I feel like I need to watch from four on.
- 22:33Speaker 4: I love one and three. Two is its own crazy
- 22:36Speaker 4: ass mess, so the first three I stand by in
- 22:39Speaker 4: their own weird way. It's been a while since I've
- 22:42Speaker 4: seen The Dream Child, but in general I like Freddy
- 22:46Speaker 4: as a character. He gets way more cartoony as they
- 22:50Speaker 4: go on, but... So anyway, yep. I like the horror
- 22:55Speaker 4: overtones and I like most of what they're doing with
- 22:57Speaker 4: all the characters. It's really fun.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Awesome.
- 23:00Speaker 4: So yeah, they stopped halfway.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I heard they were doing it in like two segments.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Yeah, which is probably good because everybody would have... This
- 23:06Speaker 4: is what happens with every series now. People tear through
- 23:08Speaker 4: it in a weekend and they're like, I want more!
- 23:11Speaker 4: So it's like, shut up, you gotta wait. Which it's
- 23:13Speaker 4: been a couple of years now. It wasn't even like
- 23:15Speaker 4: a year in between them.
- 23:16Speaker 1: Those kids are going to be 40 soon.
- 23:17Speaker 4: I know, that's why... And I think they shot this
- 23:19Speaker 4: last year because I think if you look at them now,
- 23:22Speaker 4: they're even more because now they're like That one dude
- 23:24Speaker 4: is like a full-on teenager. Like, he is tall and
- 23:27Speaker 4: skinny and like... Which one? Eh, I mean, well, what's
- 23:31Speaker 4: his name?
- 23:31Speaker 1: Mike or.
- 23:32Speaker 4: They all kind of are, but um.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Will?
- 23:35Speaker 4: What's the.
- 23:36Speaker 1: The one who was in the underground? Or the one
- 23:38Speaker 1: who was hooked up with Eleven?
- 23:39Speaker 7: No.
- 23:41Speaker 4: The other one. Gavin? No, the other one. Lucas. There
- 23:46Speaker 4: we go. Caleb in the real world. He's, like, super
- 23:49Speaker 4: tall and skinny, and he's... I mean, granted, he's on
- 23:51Speaker 4: the basketball team now, but I'm like, yeah, he looks
- 23:53Speaker 4: like he's on the basketball team. Like, that kid got
- 23:55Speaker 4: really tall really fast in the story. It's only been, like,
- 23:58Speaker 4: a summer in the story, but... Or, like, a year,
- 24:01Speaker 4: I guess, since the last one ends, and they come
- 24:02Speaker 4: back on this one, and everybody's in, like, weird places,
- 24:05Speaker 4: because now they're in high school, and they're all having
- 24:07Speaker 4: high school problems, and.
- 24:09Speaker 9: So, yeah.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Same thing with Finn Wolfhard, though. That's, like, a rock
- 24:13Speaker 4: star name. That dude, it got... Again, he's the most...
- 24:16Speaker 4: awkward looking teenager in the world now. He is so teenager-y.
- 24:19Speaker 4: It's not even funny. Sadie Sink. Oh man. I love
- 24:23Speaker 4: Sadie Sink. Thank goodness she's like a big part of
- 24:26Speaker 4: this season because she's awesome.
- 24:28Speaker 1: She wasn't my favorite part of Fear Street.
- 24:31Speaker 4: She was the best part of those movies.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I know.
- 24:34Speaker 9: She's awesome.
- 24:36Speaker 4: And then we also bring in, they keep adding people.
- 24:38Speaker 4: The cast is getting huge. Like each season they kind
- 24:40Speaker 4: of add a new kid or a couple new kids.
- 24:44Speaker 4: This year we get the high school and we get Eddie.
- 24:46Speaker 4: And you think you're going to hate Eddie right off.
- 24:48Speaker 4: He seems like he's going to be an obnoxious teenager.
- 24:50Speaker 4: And he still kind of is as he goes on.
- 24:52Speaker 4: Sounds awful already. Well, you know, if you like the
- 24:55Speaker 4: D & D, Eddie's your guy. So, Eddie ended up
- 25:00Speaker 4: being way more fun as it goes on. Again, I'm
- 25:02Speaker 4: just at the halfway point now. But Eddie turned out
- 25:05Speaker 4: pretty fun. I'm okay with it. So, I watched that. Alright.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I don't think that I've watched anything else. I mean,
- 25:17Speaker 1: aside from watching dead people shows and watching so much
- 25:21Speaker 1: of regular show.
- 25:24Speaker 4: You're getting obsessed, aren't you?
- 25:27Speaker 1: Well, we finally finished regular show and I gotta tell
- 25:29Speaker 1: you that last season was fucking stupid.
- 25:32Speaker 4: Sometimes these things go on longer than they need to.
- 25:34Speaker 1: Well, it's like I liked it when it was like
- 25:35Speaker 1: standalone because usually it's a background show. Like it's just
- 25:39Speaker 1: on and I'm like on the internet but you can
- 25:41Speaker 1: just kind of like oh, this is what's going on.
- 25:43Speaker 1: And you can watch an episode, you can kind of
- 25:45Speaker 1: not pay attention, and you're not going to miss anything.
- 25:47Speaker 1: That last, at least that whole solid season, if not
- 25:50Speaker 1: a little bit of the season before that, there was
- 25:52Speaker 1: a fucking arc. And I don't like it. And I
- 25:54Speaker 1: was just like, they were in space? Why were they
- 25:57Speaker 1: in space? And there was like evil pop, and nobody
- 26:01Speaker 1: needs evil pops. That last season was just, they should have, yeah,
- 26:06Speaker 1: they should have wrapped that bad boy up before then
- 26:09Speaker 1: because i was not a big fan of the whole
- 26:10Speaker 1: evil pops versus good pops and it was they had
- 26:14Speaker 1: a fight and giant space and it was that whole
- 26:20Speaker 1: last season was stupid well if.
- 26:22Speaker 4: We're doing series again we mostly talk about movies but
- 26:25Speaker 4: we veered off into several series now so if we're
- 26:28Speaker 4: doing that i will mention the only other thing i
- 26:30Speaker 4: had been watching on netflix i finished up whatever my
- 26:33Speaker 4: other show was and i was trying to just not
- 26:36Speaker 4: think about it too much because then I'll never pick something.
- 26:38Speaker 4: I'll just be tied up forever trying to think of
- 26:40Speaker 4: what am I going to watch next? So I just
- 26:41Speaker 4: saw it and went, you know, I meant to watch
- 26:43Speaker 4: this from the get-go when it first came out.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Let's do it now.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Hit play. And I watched The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Did
- 26:51Speaker 4: you ever watch any of that? Nope. She's pretty damn likable.
- 26:55Speaker 4: Gotta say, I've come around on that Kimmy gal. I
- 26:57Speaker 4: didn't know what to do with her. I don't care
- 26:58Speaker 4: about The Office.
- 26:59Speaker 5: I know.
- 26:59Speaker 4: Everybody loves The Office.
- 27:00Speaker 7: Whatever.
- 27:01Speaker 4: I didn't pay attention to her then, but in watching
- 27:03Speaker 4: this now, I'm like, Yep, she is pretty damned adorable.
- 27:06Speaker 1: In popular opinion, The Office sucks.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't get it.
- 27:10Speaker 7: I just.
- 27:11Speaker 4: It's fine if you want to like it. I know
- 27:13Speaker 4: plenty of people who love it.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Maybe you have to have had to work in an
- 27:16Speaker 1: office at some point.
- 27:18Speaker 4: I'm doing it now and I don't love it anymore.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I don't enjoy watching... Is it Steve Carell? Yeah, Steve Carell.
- 27:25Speaker 1: I don't find him tolerable, even in the slightest.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Yeah, he's... You can find things to do with him,
- 27:32Speaker 4: but yeah.
- 27:32Speaker 1: No, I don't like him.
- 27:33Speaker 4: I'm not really thrilled with the office version of him anyway.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I don't like it. It just seems like a TV
- 27:37Speaker 1: show full of awkwardness, and I've got enough awkwardness in
- 27:40Speaker 1: my life that I don't need a goddamn show surrounding it.
- 27:43Speaker 4: Well, luckily, Kimmy is, well, she's awkward from day one,
- 27:47Speaker 4: but she has an excuse. You know what the story is, right? Basically,
- 27:51Speaker 4: it's after all the real world news stories came out,
- 27:55Speaker 4: and maybe in bad taste to start making a TV
- 27:58Speaker 4: show that's a comedy out of this, but We, all
- 28:00Speaker 4: the women who get kidnapped and put in the underground
- 28:03Speaker 4: bunker or whatever the hell happens, like all your room
- 28:06Speaker 4: movie and all that stuff that came out of the
- 28:09Speaker 4: real world version of women being kidnapped and kept away
- 28:12Speaker 4: from the world for years on end. Well, that's the
- 28:14Speaker 4: premise of this story. The Reverend kidnaps girls and puts
- 28:19Speaker 4: them in this underground bunker and she's trapped there for
- 28:21Speaker 4: 15 years. So it starts with her being rescued and
- 28:25Speaker 4: then her trying to figure out how the hell to
- 28:27Speaker 4: get back into life.
- 28:28Speaker 1: This sounds like Blast from the past. You are not
- 28:31Speaker 1: tricking me.
- 28:32Speaker 4: He didn't get kidnapped. Yeah, but he was in a bunker.
- 28:34Speaker 4: It was the nuclear war.
- 28:35Speaker 1: He was in a bunker for years and him trying to...
- 28:37Speaker 1: That sounds like somebody who watched Blast from the past
- 28:39Speaker 1: and tried to make someone else out of it.
- 28:40Speaker 4: I feel like she's way cuter than Brendan Fraser. That's
- 28:43Speaker 4: just me.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Back in the day.
- 28:46Speaker 4: You and every other girl. That's one I don't get.
- 28:48Speaker 4: That's Kevin Bacon for me. Because I used to work
- 28:50Speaker 4: with a girl who thought he was the hottest thing
- 28:53Speaker 4: in the world in his like George of the Jungle era.
- 28:55Speaker 4: And I'm like, I'll give you the dude.
- 28:57Speaker 1: What are you talking about? Encino Man was hot.
- 28:58Speaker 4: The dude that worked out to get that body. I
- 29:01Speaker 4: will give him that. But I just never clicked with
- 29:03Speaker 4: him as an actor. What's interesting now, I'm way more
- 29:07Speaker 4: interested in what he's doing. Hearing his story lately, which
- 29:10Speaker 4: I didn't know anything about. So for years, I was
- 29:12Speaker 4: just like, what the hell happened to Brendan Fraser? His
- 29:14Speaker 4: career went to hell. didn't know the backstory there's a
- 29:17Speaker 4: real world thing going.
- 29:19Speaker 1: On tell me more tell me more.
- 29:21Speaker 4: He um kind of got me too'd not that way
- 29:25Speaker 4: the other side like he had somebody doing making propositions
- 29:33Speaker 4: and that kind of thing enough that he went you
- 29:36Speaker 4: know what i'm out and he walked away from all
- 29:39Speaker 4: of it in his in these last couple of years
- 29:41Speaker 4: started acting again and i was like oh shit i
- 29:44Speaker 4: didn't know any of that that's.
- 29:46Speaker 1: Maybe because he's not as pretty anymore he's not getting
- 29:48Speaker 1: his proposition.
- 29:48Speaker 4: I think he just dealt with i mean literally seems
- 29:51Speaker 4: like a lot of freaking therapy kind of stuff like
- 29:53Speaker 4: he really went through something So, again, now I'm like, oh,
- 29:57Speaker 4: this actually seems like an interesting dude. I wasn't as
- 30:00Speaker 4: interested in him when I thought he was just goofy
- 30:03Speaker 4: George of the Jungle, and I'm still not into those
- 30:05Speaker 4: mummy movies. So, like, didn't care about most of his
- 30:08Speaker 4: stuff when he was younger, but now I'm like, alright.
- 30:10Speaker 4: He was cute. You want to bring him back as
- 30:11Speaker 4: a character actor? Somebody, Tarantino, get on it. Bring him back,
- 30:15Speaker 4: and yeah.
- 30:15Speaker 1: I'm fine with that.
- 30:16Speaker 4: I'll watch him now as a character actor.
- 30:18Speaker 9: That'll be cool.
- 30:19Speaker 4: Because now he doesn't have to worry about being pretty.
- 30:20Speaker 4: He's an old man.
- 30:22Speaker 1: And I wasn't trying to say that he's unattractive. I'm
- 30:23Speaker 1: just saying he's Back in the day, he was pretty.
- 30:25Speaker 4: He's an old dude now. Come on.
- 30:26Speaker 1: He was pretty, though. Let's be honest.
- 30:29Speaker 4: He was ripped. I'll give him that. Dude was in shape.
- 30:33Speaker 4: I never quite got the rest of the look, but
- 30:35Speaker 4: dude did work out to get that body, so good
- 30:37Speaker 4: for him.
- 30:37Speaker 1: Yes, he did.
- 30:39Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Good for all of us.
- 30:42Speaker 4: I guess.
- 30:42Speaker 1: That George of the Jungle body benefited society.
- 30:46Speaker 4: If you say so.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I do.
- 30:49Speaker 4: You watch Dudley Do-Right. Tell me how you feel about that.
- 30:51Speaker 1: I will not do that.
- 30:54Speaker 4: So anyway, yeah, Kimmy Schmidt kind of has some problems
- 30:58Speaker 4: readjusting to the world. I will give What's Her Face credit. Like,
- 31:02Speaker 4: that performance, like... She is just always out of step
- 31:08Speaker 4: with everything. She never gets anybody's references. She's always missing
- 31:14Speaker 4: the point of what somebody's trying to tell her. It's
- 31:17Speaker 4: an art form to be able to... Kind of like
- 31:19Speaker 4: watching ghosts? It's enough writing that, but just trying to
- 31:24Speaker 4: deliver that and be earnest about it the whole time.
- 31:27Speaker 4: She did it for seasons on end and is really
- 31:30Speaker 4: good at it. I enjoy her as a I haven't
- 31:34Speaker 4: watched the Choose Your Own Adventure movie. When they finished
- 31:37Speaker 4: the season, they came back a few years later and
- 31:39Speaker 4: they did a Choose Your Own Adventure movie.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I know they did that with like, what was the
- 31:42Speaker 1: Black Mirror?
- 31:43Speaker 4: A couple of them did that. Yeah, Black Mirror did
- 31:45Speaker 4: that one and this was around that same time. I
- 31:47Speaker 4: think they just thought it would be funny. There's so
- 31:49Speaker 4: much of that. I mean, it is so dumb, the
- 31:52Speaker 4: level of humor. And that's weird coming from me because
- 31:54Speaker 4: I don't like dumb comedies. But it's like, I didn't
- 31:57Speaker 4: know Tina Fey was dumb. Because like, some of her
- 32:00Speaker 4: comedies are just so goofy. And I'm like, Tina. Tina.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Tina.
- 32:06Speaker 7: Tina.
- 32:06Speaker 4: Come on now. She's the producer. I think she helped
- 32:10Speaker 4: put most of this together. She does make an appearance
- 32:13Speaker 4: in it and is freaking hilarious like she always is
- 32:16Speaker 4: and super freaking hot. Let me tell you, man.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 32:22Speaker 4: So, yup. That's the only other thing I'd watched on
- 32:26Speaker 4: Netflix recently was some Kimmy Schmidt.
- 32:30Speaker 7: It's pretty fun.
- 32:32Speaker 4: And a weird thing I did not expect. I've gone
- 32:35Speaker 4: through a good portion of my life. I've been around
- 32:37Speaker 4: a long time.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Long time.
- 32:39Speaker 4: Did not really get into Carole Kane.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Is she the one from one of Stranger Calls?
- 32:45Speaker 8: Yes.
- 32:45Speaker 4: Which that's maybe the most functional thing. And she was
- 32:47Speaker 4: like a kid then. But like all the other times
- 32:49Speaker 4: she's like been like a parent in the movies. Like
- 32:54Speaker 4: she's just so over the top and weird and just
- 32:56Speaker 4: doesn't fit. I'm watching her in Scrooged and I'm like,
- 32:59Speaker 4: why is your performance so... I mean, this whole movie
- 33:02Speaker 4: is kind of silly, but yours is way above and
- 33:05Speaker 4: beyond what everybody else is doing. So, like, there's so
- 33:07Speaker 4: many performances of hers. Freaking Princess Bride. I'm like, can
- 33:10Speaker 4: you dial it back a little? You and Billy don't
- 33:12Speaker 4: fit in whatever else is going on in this movie.
- 33:14Speaker 1: Calm that shit down.
- 33:15Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. Like, I never really got into
- 33:17Speaker 4: her just as a performance. She has really grown on
- 33:22Speaker 4: me in this show. She is weird like she always is.
- 33:25Speaker 4: I don't know what it is. Maybe I just needed
- 33:26Speaker 4: more exposure because she doesn't usually have tons. She's always
- 33:29Speaker 4: like a bit player and all these other things. But
- 33:32Speaker 4: she's a regular, which I didn't know when I got
- 33:34Speaker 4: into this. She's in there for the whole run of
- 33:35Speaker 4: the series. She is super weird and pretty damn funny.
- 33:40Speaker 4: And I don't know what the hell her accent is.
- 33:43Speaker 4: She seems like she, again, the accent she does in
- 33:46Speaker 4: Princess Bride is not far from her regular one. And
- 33:48Speaker 4: I'm like, is she like from somewhere? What is this?
- 33:52Speaker 4: She's from Ohio. She's had that accent as long as
- 33:55Speaker 4: I've known who she is. What the hell? I don't
- 33:57Speaker 4: know if she has it when a stranger calls, but
- 33:59Speaker 4: like all of her other performances as an adult, she
- 34:02Speaker 4: has that weird sound to the way she talks. And
- 34:05Speaker 4: I always thought maybe she was from somewhere.
- 34:06Speaker 1: North Atlantic.
- 34:08Speaker 4: I don't know what it is. It is so weird.
- 34:09Speaker 1: What is that accent that all the people from like
- 34:12Speaker 1: the 40s and 50s?
- 34:14Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. I don't know. But it's not really that either.
- 34:17Speaker 4: It's almost something like that then mixed in with from
- 34:20Speaker 4: another country, which she's not. I don't know. It is
- 34:23Speaker 4: so weird the way that she talks and there's no
- 34:26Speaker 4: excuse for it that I know of. So I don't know.
- 34:29Speaker 4: I don't know what's going on. But somehow along the way,
- 34:31Speaker 4: I didn't, I not only didn't dislike her anymore, I
- 34:34Speaker 4: kind of sold on her. She's pretty damn funny.
- 34:37Speaker 1: I'll be damned.
- 34:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Did not see that coming either. On that note, I
- 34:41Speaker 4: say we take our break here and we'll come back
- 34:43Speaker 4: with this week's guest.
- 35:07Speaker 3: Wouldn't some hot buttered popcorn hit the spot right now?
- 35:11Speaker 3: Extra fluffy, extra big kernels of it pop to perfection.
- 35:15Speaker 3: Then drenched with the golden goodness of pure sweet creamery butter.
- 35:20Speaker 3: Can't you just taste it? We heat the container extra high,
- 35:24Speaker 3: but you better buy two more for the rest of
- 35:28Speaker 3: the family. Piping hot, golden, buttered popcorn.
- 35:31Speaker 2: Universal presents the 7% solution. Nicholas Meyer's best-selling mystery from
- 35:37Speaker 2: the personal memoirs of Dr. John H.
- 35:39Speaker 3: Watson.
- 35:40Speaker 8: First you must tell me how you guessed the details
- 35:42Speaker 8: of my life with such uncanny accuracy.
- 35:44Speaker 10: Kind of a guess.
- 35:45Speaker 1: It is an appalling habit, destructive to the logical faculty.
- 35:48Speaker 2: This is wonderful.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Come on, Watson.
- 35:50Speaker 2: The 7% solution, revealing for the first time the vile
- 35:53Speaker 2: and destructive habit that almost destroyed the world's greatest detective.
- 35:58Speaker 5: Watson!
- 35:58Speaker 2: The true identity of Sherlock Holmes' arch-nemesis, Professor James Moriarty.
- 36:02Speaker 7: You startled me.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Come on, Watson!
- 36:05Speaker 2: And the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the hitherto unknown affair... You
- 36:11Speaker 2: know you have the adventure of the 7% solution.
- 36:14Speaker 3: That's right.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Nicol Williamson is Sherlock Holmes. Alan Arkin is Dr. Sigmund Freud.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Robert Duvall is Dr.
- 36:21Speaker 9: John H.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Watson.
- 36:22Speaker 2: Vanessa Redgrave is the lovely Lola Devereux. Jeremy Kemp is
- 36:25Speaker 2: the Baron von Leinsdorf. Joel Grey is.
- 36:27Speaker 7: The possibly fictitious Lowenstein. Say yes!
- 36:29Speaker 2: And Sir Lawrence Olivier is Professor Moriarty.
- 36:31Speaker 9: Persecuting me is the only way I.
- 36:33Speaker 8: Can put it.
- 36:33Speaker 4: Persecuting you?
- 36:34Speaker 7: I see everything.
- 36:34Speaker 4: I am on the case and you have placed me there.
- 36:37Speaker 2: Now you must follow my instructions. Sherlock Holmes' most baffling mystery.
- 36:44Speaker 8: Mystery.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Sigmund Freud's most curious case. The year's most intriguing motion picture.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Where was this train originally heading? It is now the
- 36:57Speaker 3: Orient of Express.
- 37:00Speaker 1: The Orient of Express.
- 37:09Speaker 2: There has been no explanation for the 7% solution until now.
- 37:18Speaker 4: So this episode, I'm joined by not just a director.
- 37:21Speaker 4: He's also a best-selling novelist, a screenwriter, a producer, in
- 37:25Speaker 4: addition to his impressive career as a director, which includes
- 37:28Speaker 4: some beloved genre classics, as well as becoming an essential
- 37:32Speaker 4: part of one of the biggest science fiction franchises ever,
- 37:36Speaker 4: and another movie we'll talk about that had a huge
- 37:39Speaker 4: impact on the entire country in ways that few films
- 37:42Speaker 4: ever had, and more than likely no project will ever
- 37:46Speaker 4: get the attention and sheer number of viewers that this
- 37:48Speaker 4: movie did. So with all that said, I say we
- 37:51Speaker 4: get right to it as we focus on director Nicholas Meyer.
- 38:01Speaker 4: All right, I usually try to start Kind of early
- 38:04Speaker 4: on and see how people got into where they ended up.
- 38:08Speaker 4: So where were you from originally?
- 38:10Speaker 7: I was born and raised in New York City on
- 38:13Speaker 7: the island of Manhattan.
- 38:14Speaker 11: 240 East 62nd Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. I
- 38:23Speaker 11: went to PS 183 and then I was transferred to
- 38:27Speaker 11: the Ethical Culture and later the Filston Schools.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Did you early on kind of take two... Arts in
- 38:34Speaker 4: general or writing or anything in particular? Or was it
- 38:38Speaker 4: something you discovered kind of later?
- 38:39Speaker 7: I was an artist from the get-go. Yeah. I think
- 38:46Speaker 7: my father started to read me stories when I was little.
- 38:50Speaker 7: And then I started to dictate stories to him. And
- 38:54Speaker 7: he wrote them down. And when I was about five,
- 38:57Speaker 7: he said, I'm tired of being your stenographer. You write them.
- 39:02Speaker 7: And I've been doing that ever since.
- 39:04Speaker 4: That's pretty early for most kids. Yeah, that's really early.
- 39:08Speaker 4: So was that what you were drawn to initially, was
- 39:11Speaker 4: writing and kind of planning to stick with that in
- 39:13Speaker 4: the beginning, or was it just taking things as they came?
- 39:21Speaker 7: Growing up in New York City, just after the end
- 39:26Speaker 7: of World War II, that's how old I am, that
- 39:29Speaker 7: was like... a Disneyland, only it wasn't made out of plastic.
- 39:32Speaker 7: It was all real. So you could go to the ballet.
- 39:35Speaker 7: You could go to the opera. You could go to
- 39:37Speaker 7: the theater. You could go to the subway. You could
- 39:40Speaker 7: go to... It was all there for the taking. And
- 39:45Speaker 7: as a kid, I just... soaked it all up, whether
- 39:48Speaker 7: it was a movie or a music. It didn't matter.
- 39:51Speaker 7: It just all looked fantastic to me. It still does.
- 39:56Speaker 4: And then started kind of taking that in and repurposing
- 40:00Speaker 4: it into your stuff.
- 40:02Speaker 7: Well, when I was 11, I was taken to see
- 40:04Speaker 7: the Mike Todd Around the World in 80 Days.
- 40:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 7: And I had a religious experience. I was like Saul
- 40:13Speaker 7: of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. I had a vision.
- 40:17Speaker 7: And the vision was helped by a little booklet that
- 40:19Speaker 7: came with the movie for $ 2, and I still have it.
- 40:25Speaker 7: And it was articles about the making of this movie,
- 40:27Speaker 7: and one of the articles said, You too can make
- 40:31Speaker 7: a motion picture. No previous experience necessary. This was an
- 40:37Speaker 7: article about Mike Todd, because this was the only movie
- 40:40Speaker 7: he'd ever produced, and he died shortly thereafter. I didn't
- 40:45Speaker 7: get the sarcasm. I just got, you too can make
- 40:48Speaker 7: a motion picture. No previous experience. I mean, it's changed
- 40:51Speaker 7: so much. I mean, now you really can. Like, kids
- 40:54Speaker 7: growing up now can do anything. Like, the technology is there.
- 40:57Speaker 7: But that was a big statement back then. I mean,
- 41:00Speaker 7: especially a movie as huge in scale as that one is. Well,
- 41:04Speaker 7: we had an 8mm wind-up.
- 41:06Speaker 4: I played that game when I was a kid.
- 41:08Speaker 7: With a wind-up camera. And I said to my dad,
- 41:11Speaker 7: you have to help me do this. And not being,
- 41:15Speaker 7: you know, particularly original. The movie I wanted to make
- 41:18Speaker 7: was the movie I had just seen.
- 41:19Speaker 8: Yep.
- 41:21Speaker 7: So we spent the next five years, weekends, school vacations,
- 41:27Speaker 7: summer holidays, making the movie of Around the World in
- 41:31Speaker 7: 80 Days with all kids. And, of course, I played
- 41:34Speaker 7: Felius Fogg and learned about editing, cutting together this thing
- 41:40Speaker 7: on the kitchen table.
- 41:41Speaker 4: Yeah, that's... That's the old school version. Definitely, once you've
- 41:45Speaker 4: got that version, you should be able to edit anything
- 41:47Speaker 4: at that point. Well, then as you move forward, I
- 41:53Speaker 4: know you kind of start, eventually get to novels before film.
- 41:59Speaker 4: So was that where you were planning on sticking?
- 42:02Speaker 7: No, that's not what happens. I went in to do films,
- 42:07Speaker 7: and in 1971 I drove across country. by myself. I
- 42:12Speaker 7: had never been to Los Angeles. I didn't know anybody
- 42:14Speaker 7: there because I'd been writing screenplays and that's what I
- 42:18Speaker 7: wanted to do, ultimately to direct. And so I was
- 42:25Speaker 7: very fortunate. It's important to be fortunate. Somebody recommended a
- 42:32Speaker 7: general to Napoleon and said, this guy's a very good general.
- 42:35Speaker 7: And Napoleon said, I know he's good, but is he lucky?
- 42:40Speaker 7: And I was lucky.
- 42:41Speaker 4: That's important.
- 42:42Speaker 7: So I started writing movies. And then the Writers Guild
- 42:49Speaker 7: went on strike. And you weren't allowed to write screenplays.
- 42:54Speaker 7: And my girlfriend said, well, now you can write that
- 42:56Speaker 7: book you keep yammering about. And that book was about
- 43:00Speaker 7: Sherlock Holmes meets Sigmund Freud. And that was called The
- 43:06Speaker 7: 7% Solution. And much to my surprise... Because I didn't
- 43:11Speaker 7: know anybody who was interested in Sherlock Holmes. He was
- 43:17Speaker 7: sort of fading from public consciousness. Suddenly, this was the
- 43:22Speaker 7: number one best-selling novel in the United States for 40 weeks.
- 43:27Speaker 7: And my career as a novelist of sorts took off.
- 43:32Speaker 7: But it was after the screenwriting part. And then I
- 43:37Speaker 7: sold the rights to the novel. on condition that I
- 43:41Speaker 7: write the screenplay, the screenplay got nominated for an Oscar,
- 43:47Speaker 7: and so that when I wrote the screenplay for Time
- 43:51Speaker 7: After Time, I said, well, you can have the screenplay,
- 43:53Speaker 7: but I have to direct it. So it was kind
- 43:55Speaker 7: of a leapfrog thing, but the movies came first.
- 43:58Speaker 4: That's still a big ask, though, yeah. Especially now, I
- 44:01Speaker 4: feel like it would be hard to go, especially for
- 44:03Speaker 4: a studio film, to go in and be like, I'm
- 44:05Speaker 4: going to direct this movie.
- 44:06Speaker 7: Ridiculous.
- 44:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that's impressive. But But again, I mean, yeah, coming
- 44:11Speaker 4: off of, you seem to like that, especially with the
- 44:13Speaker 4: period piece, but then that also meeting of epic characters
- 44:18Speaker 4: definitely time after time is such an amazing concept.
- 44:23Speaker 7: It wasn't my concept, I have to say. Yeah, that's true.
- 44:25Speaker 7: It was a guy named Carl Alexander who was writing
- 44:30Speaker 7: a novel. I had been at the University of Iowa
- 44:33Speaker 7: when he was there, and he contacted me when 7%
- 44:38Speaker 7: was on the bestseller list and said, I'm writing a
- 44:41Speaker 7: novel which is sort of inspired by yours. I have
- 44:46Speaker 7: 65 pages in an outline. Would you read it and
- 44:49Speaker 7: tell me what you think? And so I read it,
- 44:51Speaker 7: and I gave my opinion. But I couldn't get it
- 44:56Speaker 7: out of my head, and I remember thinking, gee, this
- 45:00Speaker 7: is really much more a cinematic idea than a literary idea,
- 45:06Speaker 7: in my opinion.
- 45:07Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 45:08Speaker 7: Um and i thought how see i never would have
- 45:11Speaker 7: thought of that in a million years and then about
- 45:13Speaker 7: three months later you know i woke up at four
- 45:15Speaker 7: in the morning and saying you're an idiot option is
- 45:18Speaker 7: book and then do you and that's so that's what
- 45:21Speaker 7: i did yeah at.
- 45:24Speaker 4: That point were you able to because you kind of
- 45:27Speaker 4: set yourself in motion as you know director and everything
- 45:29Speaker 4: were you able to be involved in casting because again
- 45:32Speaker 4: you've got the three leads are just the most amazing
- 45:35Speaker 4: casts uh were you Involved in that beforehand, or was
- 45:40Speaker 4: that something the studio put together?
- 45:42Speaker 7: No, I'm the director. I get to be involved. Yeah.
- 45:48Speaker 7: I cast all three of them. I mean, with the
- 45:51Speaker 7: studio's concurrence. My first choice for H.G. Wells was Derek Jacoby,
- 46:01Speaker 7: because I'd been watching I, Claudius.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:04Speaker 7: But, of course, the studio had not been watching iClaudius
- 46:07Speaker 7: because it was on public TV. So they didn't know
- 46:11Speaker 7: from him. They wanted Mick Jagger as the Ripper.
- 46:15Speaker 4: I've heard that, yeah. That would have been a very
- 46:17Speaker 4: different film.
- 46:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I think he would have been a very good Ripper.
- 46:21Speaker 7: I'm not sure he would have been very convincing as
- 46:24Speaker 7: a Harley Street surgeon, which is his other... Anyway, and
- 46:30Speaker 7: I wanted a... Blonde, blue-eyed, fast-talking, city chippy. I wanted
- 46:35Speaker 7: Gene Arthur or somebody like her. And I wound up
- 46:40Speaker 7: with a slow-talking brunette from Arkansas. But when I saw her,
- 46:46Speaker 7: I knew, this is perfect.
- 46:48Speaker 4: Yeah, she makes it work. And in a weird... Again,
- 46:52Speaker 4: it works so perfectly being a time travel movie because her,
- 46:57Speaker 4: as a 70s girl, she's definitely... bringing a very specific
- 47:01Speaker 4: thing to it that I think Mary Steenburgen at that
- 47:04Speaker 4: time was so perfectly suited for. So it really is, yeah,
- 47:08Speaker 4: I guess, good that it came together like that because
- 47:11Speaker 4: I think she's so good at doing that. David Warner
- 47:14Speaker 4: is just... He's so amazing in that role. And again,
- 47:18Speaker 4: to get your lead and have him have to be
- 47:21Speaker 4: able to pull off this fish-out-of-water story, which eventually just
- 47:25Speaker 4: becomes this great romance. It's... I should.
- 47:30Speaker 7: give my opinion, my opinion is that artists are not
- 47:35Speaker 7: the best judges of their own work. Um, they lose
- 47:42Speaker 7: all proprietary authority when the work is finished.
- 47:45Speaker 4: It's out there.
- 47:48Speaker 7: Um, somebody said to George Balanchine, what is this ballet about?
- 47:52Speaker 7: And Balanchine said, that's none of my business. Uh, which
- 47:57Speaker 7: is an amazing answer. Um, But, having done all those disclaimers,
- 48:06Speaker 7: my opinion is that Time After Time is five movies
- 48:11Speaker 7: all wrapped up in one premise. It's a romance. It's
- 48:16Speaker 7: a thriller. It's science fiction. It's a comedy. And it
- 48:22Speaker 7: is a social commentary. All derived from the same premise, which,
- 48:29Speaker 7: as I say, was not mine but Carl Alexander's.
- 48:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 48:33Speaker 4: It is packed. There's a lot of stuff going on
- 48:35Speaker 4: in that running time. We get to a lot of
- 48:37Speaker 4: stuff along the way. So then, I guess, going from there,
- 48:43Speaker 4: how did you end up with the day after? Because
- 48:45Speaker 4: that was... I don't think you could make kids understand now, like,
- 48:48Speaker 4: the cultural impact that that ended up having. So how
- 48:52Speaker 4: did you end up, you know, being brought into that project?
- 48:55Speaker 5: Um.
- 48:57Speaker 7: I was the third director, at least, at least the
- 49:01Speaker 7: third director to be offered to make a movie, a
- 49:05Speaker 7: TV movie, about nuclear war between the United States and
- 49:10Speaker 7: the Soviet Union. Not from the point of view of
- 49:13Speaker 7: politics or politicians or the military, but just.
- 49:20Speaker 7: People you know kind of like us doing whatever it
- 49:23Speaker 7: is we're doing that we think is important and.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Then getting nuked I mean thrown in the middle of
- 49:28Speaker 4: it yeah and.
- 49:31Speaker 7: I didn't want to make the movie either I was
- 49:33Speaker 7: having a lot of fun being single in LA and
- 49:37Speaker 7: having two hit movies in Under my belt. Plus, going
- 49:41Speaker 7: to do a TV movie, that was then considered a
- 49:44Speaker 7: kind of step down. You weren't supposed to step away
- 49:47Speaker 7: from features. Whatever. I was, at the time, being psychoanalyzed.
- 49:56Speaker 7: And that's when you lie on the couch and you talk.
- 49:59Speaker 7: And the man sitting behind you, or woman, just listens.
- 50:04Speaker 7: They don't talk back. You do the heavy lifting.
- 50:07Speaker 10: Okay.
- 50:08Speaker 7: So I was lying on the couch trying to rationalize
- 50:11Speaker 7: my way out of directing a movie about nuclear war.
- 50:19Speaker 7: And my shrink surprised me by speaking. And he said, well,
- 50:26Speaker 7: I guess this is where we find out who you
- 50:29Speaker 7: really are.
- 50:32Speaker 4: That's a big statement.
- 50:34Speaker 7: Could have killed him. Then I realized I was going
- 50:37Speaker 7: to have to make the movie. And I jawboned other
- 50:40Speaker 7: people with that line, too. My cameraman on Star Trek II,
- 50:45Speaker 7: Gane Rescher, who was also the cinematographer, by the way,
- 50:49Speaker 7: on A Face in the Crowd. And I said, you know,
- 50:54Speaker 7: we're going to do this nuclear war movie. And he said, oh, God, no,
- 50:57Speaker 7: don't ask me to do that. And I said, let
- 50:59Speaker 7: me get this straight. One time this town gives you
- 51:04Speaker 7: the chance to put your work in the service of
- 51:06Speaker 7: your beliefs. You're going to pass and bitch at dinner
- 51:10Speaker 7: parties instead? I said, Cain, I think this is where
- 51:14Speaker 7: we find out who you really are.
- 51:16Speaker 6: Nice.
- 51:17Speaker 7: Yeah, it works every time. So that's how we wound
- 51:21Speaker 7: up doing it.
- 51:22Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 51:23Speaker 4: And I guess couldn't have been prepared for what, again,
- 51:25Speaker 4: especially coming from a TV movie at the time, the
- 51:28Speaker 4: way people viewed them, but. Yeah, I mean, I remember
- 51:31Speaker 4: the impact that it had in every TV guide and
- 51:35Speaker 4: TV paper in every city across America. It was the cover.
- 51:38Speaker 7: Oh, it was the cover of Newsweek.
- 51:39Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 51:39Speaker 7: The cover of Time Magazine. But, you know, it's just,
- 51:44Speaker 7: I said to them at the beginning, I said, you're
- 51:46Speaker 7: never going to put this on the air. This is,
- 51:49Speaker 7: you know, American television specializes in infantilizing its audience. The
- 51:56Speaker 7: function of television is network television. is to sell advertising.
- 52:02Speaker 7: You're not going to have any advertising. This is not
- 52:04Speaker 7: going to get in the air. And they said, oh, yes,
- 52:06Speaker 7: it will. Yes, it will. They were so blithely convinced.
- 52:10Speaker 7: There's a new documentary out now called Television Event, which
- 52:18Speaker 7: is about the making of the day after. And I
- 52:20Speaker 7: learned so much shit that I didn't know.
- 52:24Speaker 4: It's probably good that you didn't know at the time.
- 52:25Speaker 7: Oh, I'm sure I didn't. I mean, But I actually
- 52:28Speaker 7: had things backwards. I thought people were my friends who
- 52:30Speaker 7: were my enemies. I thought people were my enemies who
- 52:33Speaker 7: turned out to be my friends. And it barely got
- 52:38Speaker 7: on the air. And then everybody was astounded, nobody more
- 52:43Speaker 7: so than me, to learn that 100 million people had
- 52:48Speaker 7: watched it in one night, making it the most watched
- 52:52Speaker 7: movie ever. Ever made for television. It'll never be beaten
- 52:55Speaker 7: because there's too many channels. I mean, now that's ridiculous.
- 52:59Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't get a handful of people to watch anything,
- 53:01Speaker 4: and it's all so scattered now. Yeah, that had such
- 53:05Speaker 4: an impact. I just wondered how you, as a filmmaker,
- 53:09Speaker 4: even deal with that after the fact, especially as serious
- 53:12Speaker 4: as it was.
- 53:12Speaker 7: Well, after the fact was simply being surprised and relieved
- 53:18Speaker 7: and whatever. and thinking that maybe this was the most
- 53:21Speaker 7: worthwhile thing I ever got to do with my life,
- 53:25Speaker 7: because it changed President Ronald Reagan's mind about a winnable
- 53:30Speaker 7: nuclear war. Ultimately, it sent him to Reykjavik to sign
- 53:35Speaker 7: the Intermediate-Range Missile Treaty with Gorbachev. Yeah, it had a
- 53:39Speaker 7: big impact. But before any of that, it was a difficult.
- 53:47Speaker 7: Movie. It was fraught with all kinds of political, bureaucratic, budgetary.
- 53:52Speaker 7: It was not easy to do it at one point.
- 53:56Speaker 7: I either walked off it or I was fired off
- 53:59Speaker 7: it during the editing process, and then they had to
- 54:01Speaker 7: bring me back on. It was very tough, and the
- 54:08Speaker 7: night it aired, I turned to my fiancé and I said,
- 54:12Speaker 7: you know, be honest. If If this weren't my movie,
- 54:16Speaker 7: would you sit and watch it? Because I couldn't imagine
- 54:19Speaker 7: anybody watching it, let alone a hundred million people. That
- 54:23Speaker 7: just blew me away.
- 54:26Speaker 4: Well, and then they're piecing together this other franchise at
- 54:33Speaker 4: that same time that's kind of losing its footing. The
- 54:37Speaker 4: motion picture didn't go so well for Star Trek. I mean,
- 54:40Speaker 4: just coming into that, that is, I mean, just like
- 54:42Speaker 4: I said, coming off... of a franchise that they didn't
- 54:46Speaker 4: know what to do with when they started that most
- 54:47Speaker 4: of picture. So they really wanted to kind of change
- 54:49Speaker 4: direction and bring something different to it for that second one.
- 54:52Speaker 4: So did they give you specific instructions on what they
- 54:56Speaker 4: wanted to do, or was it something that you came
- 54:58Speaker 4: up with, you know, that whole concept for, for con?
- 55:01Speaker 7: Well, as I say, a lot of this is covered
- 55:05Speaker 7: in great detail in my memoir, the view from the
- 55:09Speaker 7: bridge memories of star Trek and, A Life in Hollywood.
- 55:15Speaker 7: I had never seen Star Trek. I didn't know anything
- 55:17Speaker 7: about it. I was fortunate to be introduced to Harv Bennett,
- 55:24Speaker 7: who had produced The Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic
- 55:27Speaker 7: something or other. And he had been assigned to do
- 55:34Speaker 7: a second Star Trek movie. And I liked him. I
- 55:38Speaker 7: adored Harv. and we got along like a house on fire.
- 55:43Speaker 7: And he had watched every episode, which is more than
- 55:48Speaker 7: I'd ever done, and he'd singled out Khan as a
- 55:53Speaker 7: kind of potential good villain from his episode Space Seed.
- 56:00Speaker 7: And they had five scripts, five different scripts that were
- 56:05Speaker 7: all unrelated. They were just five attempts... to get a
- 56:10Speaker 7: second Star Trek movie. The first Star Trek movie was
- 56:15Speaker 7: a runaway production, cost $ 45 million, and they weren't going
- 56:19Speaker 7: to do that again. So they said, okay, this is
- 56:23Speaker 7: going to be the sort of hand-me-down version. And I
- 56:31Speaker 7: wound up, this is the short version, of cobbling together
- 56:38Speaker 7: selected elements of these five unproduced scripts, none of which
- 56:46Speaker 7: had sort of done the trick. And I said to
- 56:50Speaker 7: Harv and his producing partner, Robert Sal, and I said,
- 56:53Speaker 7: let's just make a list of the things that we
- 56:56Speaker 7: liked in these five scripts. Could be the major plot,
- 56:59Speaker 7: could be a subplot, could be a sequence, could be
- 57:02Speaker 7: a scene, could be a character, could be a line
- 57:06Speaker 7: of dialogue. And I'll just try to make a new
- 57:10Speaker 7: movie that encompasses all the things we picked. So, you know,
- 57:14Speaker 7: we picked Khan. We picked Kirk Meets His Son. We
- 57:18Speaker 7: picked the Genesis Project. We picked, you know, Spock Should
- 57:23Speaker 7: Die and so forth. And somehow, like fiddling with a
- 57:27Speaker 7: Rubik's Cube, I stretched out a new plot. And then
- 57:32Speaker 7: I wrote, I would say, about 85%, 90% of all
- 57:35Speaker 7: the dialogue. Harv wrote some of it. But I wrote
- 57:38Speaker 7: most of it. And like that is how it got made.
- 57:44Speaker 4: It works so well, and works so well not just
- 57:48Speaker 4: as that continuation of Trek, but also as a film,
- 57:51Speaker 4: almost a standalone, like you really could without continuing off
- 57:55Speaker 4: that first one, just come in and if you know
- 57:57Speaker 4: who the con character is, you're in already.
- 58:00Speaker 7: But you don't even need to know because I didn't know.
- 58:04Speaker 7: So I was making... A Star Trek, you know, the
- 58:08Speaker 7: first thing you see in the movie is a title
- 58:10Speaker 7: in the 23rd century. And I put in the 23rd
- 58:13Speaker 7: century because I knew my father wasn't going to have
- 58:17Speaker 7: a clue what he was seeing if I didn't say something. So, anyway.
- 58:24Speaker 4: Yeah, you're trying to convert all those people that weren't
- 58:26Speaker 4: sitting at home watching the show every week, yeah. Well then,
- 58:30Speaker 4: that is when I wondered how you became involved in
- 58:33Speaker 4: the series, because you seemed... Again, I'd heard you didn't
- 58:36Speaker 4: want to get kind of painted into that corner of
- 58:38Speaker 4: just doing that. Plus, at the same time, you've got one,
- 58:43Speaker 4: if not two, cast members that are kind of wanting
- 58:45Speaker 4: to get their feet in there and start directing.
- 58:49Speaker 7: Well, I was asked to do Star Trek III. Yeah.
- 58:52Speaker 7: I said, you know, what's that one? And they told me,
- 58:55Speaker 7: I said, Resurrection. We're talking about Resurrection? I didn't know
- 58:59Speaker 7: how to do Resurrection.
- 59:00Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 59:00Speaker 7: So, you know, Leonard went and did that. Then I
- 59:04Speaker 7: would often, I think I was making the deceivers for
- 59:08Speaker 7: Merchant Ivory in India. with Pierce Brosnan so I wasn't
- 59:14Speaker 7: there for three and then when four came around I
- 59:20Speaker 7: got a call from the studio saying we have an
- 59:25Speaker 7: emergency and We have a script that's supposed to start
- 59:28Speaker 7: shooting in six weeks, and nobody likes it, so we're
- 59:31Speaker 7: throwing it out. But we like the story. I said,
- 59:34Speaker 7: what's the story? She said, go talk to Harv and Leonard.
- 59:38Speaker 7: So I went across the studio, and they told me
- 59:41Speaker 7: about the whales. And I said, should I read the
- 59:44Speaker 7: other script? They said, no, no, don't read the other script.
- 59:46Speaker 7: And so I basically divided it up with Harv, and
- 59:51Speaker 7: he wrote the parts in outer space, and I wrote
- 59:53Speaker 7: the part that takes place on Earth. which is more
- 59:56Speaker 7: or less the same movie as Time After Time. I
- 1:00:00Speaker 7: noticed that watching it. Except they're coming from the future
- 1:00:02Speaker 7: instead of the past.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: You really seem to like San Francisco.
- 1:00:05Speaker 7: I said, couldn't they go someplace else? Do we have
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: to go to San Francisco? Why can't they go to Paris?
- 1:00:11Speaker 7: And they told me something about the whales wouldn't fit
- 1:00:13Speaker 7: in the Seine or something like that.
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: Science.
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: So, yeah, I got to recycle bits that I'd cut
- 1:00:21Speaker 7: out of Time After Time. And throw them into that, yeah.
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: Which is, yeah, maybe why some of that, it's just
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: so much fun as a concept.
- 1:00:28Speaker 7: Well, it's also, I got to write a comedy. Yeah.
- 1:00:32Speaker 7: I tell myself that I'm funny.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: Well, and then so at that point, Leonard already kind
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: of had taken their aims off of three going into four.
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: So did you have a shot at taking it over
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: as director on that?
- 1:00:44Speaker 10: No.
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: You weren't excited about it?
- 1:00:46Speaker 7: No, I came in at the last minute to frantically,
- 1:00:50Speaker 7: you know, it was another... rush job like Star Trek
- 1:00:54Speaker 7: II screenplay. It was fast, fast. And then after that,
- 1:01:01Speaker 7: Bill felt it was his turn to do five. And I, again,
- 1:01:05Speaker 7: I was off doing something else. And then I got
- 1:01:12Speaker 7: taken to lunch in London by Frank Mancuso and Martin Davis.
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: They said, you know, we want to try for one
- 1:01:19Speaker 7: more with the original cast, and would you be interested?
- 1:01:22Speaker 7: And so that's how I did it. It was all
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: kind of accidental.
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: To some extent. But yeah, I know so many people
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: kind of love those even-numbered ones, so it's, I guess,
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: not by chance that they all involve you.
- 1:01:38Speaker 7: Well, I would certainly like to think so.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: I feel like that's got something to do with it.
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: especially looking at that undiscovered country story, because as you
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: were describing the one earlier, I was thinking of undiscovered country.
- 1:01:50Speaker 4: It's five different movies. It's, you know, it's got moments
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: where it's a courtroom drama and it's a prison break.
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: And it's like, it's got so many different things kind
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: of mixed in there that like, you have to find
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: something you like, right? There's, there's so much to offer
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: in that script. So then I guess.
- 1:02:06Speaker 7: What's interesting about that script was that I didn't even
- 1:02:10Speaker 7: understand this till Leonard explained it to me when we
- 1:02:12Speaker 7: were hammering out the, story, he said, you know, the
- 1:02:15Speaker 7: Klingons have always been our stand-ins for the Russians. And
- 1:02:21Speaker 7: he said, you know, what happens if the wall comes
- 1:02:23Speaker 7: down in outer space? Who am I if I have
- 1:02:28Speaker 7: no enemy to define me? And I said, oh, oh, oh, oh, okay,
- 1:02:35Speaker 7: so like we start with an intergalactic Chernobyl, and the
- 1:02:40Speaker 7: Klingon empires, they've got a be aliens they gotta infiltrate
- 1:02:45Speaker 7: the United States they have to disperse and whatever and
- 1:02:50Speaker 7: of course people don't want them they're gonna be illegal
- 1:02:55Speaker 7: aliens you should pardon the expression and then Kirk doesn't
- 1:03:01Speaker 7: like Klingons because they killed his son and he screws
- 1:03:04Speaker 7: up something and they get put on trial because the
- 1:03:09Speaker 7: Klingon ambassador the main guy gets killed on Kirk's watch,
- 1:03:14Speaker 7: and then so we have a courtroom drama, and he's
- 1:03:18Speaker 7: in prison, and there's a prison break. I spieled the
- 1:03:21Speaker 7: whole thing out. You know, we were walking up and
- 1:03:22Speaker 7: down a beach because all I needed was someone to
- 1:03:25Speaker 7: sort of prime my pump. But point being, we actually
- 1:03:30Speaker 7: anticipated the coup in the Soviet Union. We were in
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: the cutting room when that happened in Russia, and nobody
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: knew whether poor Mr. Gorbachev was alive or dead. And
- 1:03:46Speaker 7: by the way, we didn't waste, sounds terrible, but all
- 1:03:52Speaker 7: we could think of is, is this good or bad
- 1:03:54Speaker 7: for the movie?
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: I mean, you have to. That's what you're in the
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: middle of. You've invested so much of your life at
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: that point.
- 1:04:00Speaker 7: I'd like to think we were grateful when we found
- 1:04:03Speaker 7: out he was alive. But we had Paramount saying, how
- 1:04:07Speaker 7: fast can we get the movie into theaters? Because we
- 1:04:09Speaker 7: had totally called it.
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: Yeah. That's great. Well, and so much of the technical
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: stuff on that one, I was wondering, again, just as director,
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: like shooting a murder scene in zero gravity is like
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: how complicated was that?
- 1:04:25Speaker 7: It was less complicated than I thought when I wrote it.
- 1:04:29Speaker 7: I remember sitting down and thinking, okay, we have to
- 1:04:33Speaker 7: assassinate the Klingon president. What's a cool way to assassinate
- 1:04:37Speaker 7: somebody in outer space? And then I remember thinking, how
- 1:04:42Speaker 7: come when I see movies of the space station, everybody's floating?
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: But whenever I see any Star Wars or Star Trek movies,
- 1:04:51Speaker 7: they're always walking like they're in a holiday inn or something.
- 1:04:55Speaker 7: So we assume that some point in the future, there's
- 1:04:59Speaker 7: gravity on these spaceships. And I said, okay, if that's
- 1:05:03Speaker 7: the case, how come in all those space battles, nothing
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: ever disables the gravity machine? And wouldn't it be cool
- 1:05:14Speaker 7: if the machine were disabled and everybody started floating and
- 1:05:19Speaker 7: then two guys with gravity boots come marching in and
- 1:05:22Speaker 7: they kill the helpless floating Klingon chancellor and at that
- 1:05:28Speaker 7: point I distinctly remember the director of the movie who
- 1:05:31Speaker 7: was me saying how.
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: You gonna do that it's gonna be a nightmare what
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: did I think.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: Of that and I just remembered saying at the time
- 1:05:41Speaker 7: to myself It's movies, they'll figure it out. Movies can
- 1:05:46Speaker 7: do anything. And now, of course, they can do anything.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I was still dealing with practical most of the time.
- 1:05:51Speaker 7: But it's still, well, it was the beginning of CGI.
- 1:05:54Speaker 7: And the floating blood, which I thought was going to
- 1:05:56Speaker 7: be so impossible, turned out to be relatively easy thanks
- 1:06:02Speaker 7: to concurrent technological developments. But I didn't know that when
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: I wrote it, for sure.
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: Well, and then just the scope of that, getting to
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: the planet, that big sweeping shot over the ice.
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: Again, I feel like that one's just got so much
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: visually to offer as well.
- 1:06:23Speaker 7: Well, it's in Alaska.
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: It looks amazing. Well, I know you're still, we wanted
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: to get to the books. You've, this, I guess, love
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: affair with Sherlock Holmes has continued. You've continued to do
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: those books over the years. I didn't know if you
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: wanted to go into that one or just your your autobiography,
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: or what else did you want to tell people about
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: on the books?
- 1:06:47Speaker 7: Well, I have a new book out. I do write
- 1:06:49Speaker 7: Sherlock Holmes books. I think I finally decided that Sherlock
- 1:06:53Speaker 7: Holmes relates to me in the way Nathan Zuckerman relates
- 1:06:58Speaker 7: to Philip Roth. He's a kind of an avatar for Roth,
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: and Holmes has become a kind of avatar for me.
- 1:07:07Speaker 7: I can put my thoughts and ideas and feelings into
- 1:07:15Speaker 7: Holmes with very little effort. And I might add, or
- 1:07:19Speaker 7: I would like to think, very little distortion on the
- 1:07:23Speaker 7: part of Holmes. And The Return of the Pharaoh, which
- 1:07:27Speaker 7: is the new.
- 1:07:28Speaker 11: Book, which is Holmes in Egypt in 1911, it's a
- 1:07:36Speaker 11: good book.
- 1:07:37Speaker 7: What can I tell you about that?
- 1:07:38Speaker 4: I think people shouldn't.
- 1:07:40Speaker 7: Drop everything and read it.
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: What is it you think that keeps bringing you back
- 1:07:44Speaker 4: to Holmes? Is there something about the dynamic of those
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: stories or just that character?
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: You know, I'm not a very analytic person. You've got
- 1:07:52Speaker 7: to get back on that couch. Well, that's being analyzed.
- 1:07:56Speaker 7: Somebody else is doing it. I once said to my girlfriend,
- 1:08:03Speaker 7: I really love Cezanne. And she said, why do you
- 1:08:06Speaker 7: love Cezanne? And I was like, well, I don't know,
- 1:08:13Speaker 7: but I just like them. Holmes, I read Holmes the
- 1:08:20Speaker 7: stories when I was 11 years old. I've never much
- 1:08:25Speaker 7: liked Sherlock Holmes movies. I always liked the way Conan
- 1:08:29Speaker 7: Doyle wrote him, and that's the way I sort of
- 1:08:33Speaker 7: tried to write him. But I found, I think, there's
- 1:08:37Speaker 7: a certain elasticity in his parameters that allow me to,
- 1:08:45Speaker 7: as I say, use him as a sort of stalking horse.
- 1:08:49Speaker 7: When I wrote The 7% Solution, I definitely was writing
- 1:08:55Speaker 7: in protest to all those Sherlock Holmes movies that I
- 1:08:59Speaker 7: never really cared for the Basil Rathbone and Nigel I
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: never understood why a genius hangs out with a jerk
- 1:09:08Speaker 7: it is an odd dynamic why why would he want
- 1:09:12Speaker 7: that I always saw Watson was like a kind of
- 1:09:15Speaker 7: an average guy he was like the audience he was
- 1:09:17Speaker 7: like us He's not a nincompoop. And I never believed
- 1:09:22Speaker 7: that Nigel Bruce was the voice that recounts the stories
- 1:09:27Speaker 7: that you read when you read Doyle. So the book
- 1:09:30Speaker 7: was kind of a protest. This is what it should be,
- 1:09:35Speaker 7: rightly or wrongly. And I think over the years, as
- 1:09:42Speaker 7: I say, I have found Holmes a useful vehicle for
- 1:09:47Speaker 7: my own interests, preoccupations, and opinions, which I try very
- 1:09:55Speaker 7: hard to color within the lines. I don't want to
- 1:10:00Speaker 7: make him do stuff that is utterly uncharacteristic. In The
- 1:10:05Speaker 7: Return of the Peculiar Protocols, he does something that is
- 1:10:09Speaker 7: utterly uncharacteristic, but I try to keep it as in
- 1:10:15Speaker 7: character while he's doing it. as possible you know it's
- 1:10:21Speaker 7: it makes me think it's.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: It's kind of back to that 80 days you saw
- 1:10:25Speaker 4: you read those books you saw that movie and was
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: like this this is kind of what i want to
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: do and just sort of playing in that same you
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: know get the crayons out how big can i make
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: this story and so yeah this is just a bigger
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: version of that exactly definitely well where's the best place
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: as far as people getting the books or what's the
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: best thing to to tell the people to find more
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: on on.
- 1:10:46Speaker 7: The books or movies or any of Well, there's my
- 1:10:50Speaker 7: web page, which is nicholas-meier.com. I bet there's a bunch
- 1:10:57Speaker 7: of stuff on YouTube. But you go to Amazon, you know,
- 1:11:01Speaker 7: unless you have a bookstore. If you have a bookstore,
- 1:11:04Speaker 7: go to the bookstore and say, I want The Return
- 1:11:07Speaker 7: of the Pharaoh, or I want The Adventure of the
- 1:11:11Speaker 7: Peculiar Protocols, or, you know, any of the other Holmes books,
- 1:11:17Speaker 7: The West End Horror. The 7% Solution, The Canary Trainer.
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: I've written five so far, and a sixth one is
- 1:11:25Speaker 7: in the works.
- 1:11:26Speaker 9: Definitely. Well, that's good.
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: We still have a few bookstores here, so yeah, we'll
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: see if we can go find them. All right. Well,
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: thank you for talking with us today.
- 1:11:33Speaker 7: Thank you for asking me.
- 1:11:51Speaker 3: Tonight's ABC Theater presentation, The Day After, will continue in
- 1:11:56Speaker 3: a moment.
- 1:11:59Speaker 10: I'm Ted Koppel in Washington. Immediately following The Day After,
- 1:12:02Speaker 10: ABC News will broadcast a special edition of Viewpoint. We'll
- 1:12:06Speaker 10: focus on the critical question, how to prevent nuclear war.
- 1:12:10Speaker 10: We'll talk live with Secretary of State George Shultz and
- 1:12:12Speaker 10: with a distinguished panel of experts, Henry Kissinger, Elie Wiesel,
- 1:12:16Speaker 10: William F. Buckley Jr., General Brent Scowcroft, and Carl Sagan.
- 1:12:20Speaker 10: We'll also take questions from our audience on Viewpoint immediately
- 1:12:24Speaker 10: following the day after.
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: In under a minute, you will be transported to a
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: bizarre and fantastic new age.
- 1:12:34Speaker 7: Hi, I'm Malcolm McDowell. You're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: So just keep listening.
- 1:12:43Speaker 9: It's part of your.
- 1:12:46Speaker 7: Problem, you know.
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:12:55Speaker 12: All of life's riddles are answered.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: In the movies. And now, on with the show.
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: So, Wonderfest. Let's go over it. We got monsters. We
- 1:13:25Speaker 4: made purchases.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Made a big money high end.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Large purchases of giant monsters.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: Spent $ 2 and got them off her.
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: I mean, we got the special. It was like a
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: two for five, so I got to pick out my Rodan.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: You need like a picture of him for like the
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: Instagram page?
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: We can take a photo right now so you guys
- 1:13:46Speaker 4: can share in the wonder. Probably not.
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: My little Mothra, he's so damn cute.
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: I gotta get my Rodan, hold on.
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: I had to do all the heavy lifting and dig
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: the Rodan and Mothra out of the bin.
- 1:14:01Speaker 4: You know the sad thing is that's kind of what
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: I want in general now.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: Somebody else to pick out your road no just everything.
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: I when I go places because I know you're a
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: dork that goes places and go shopping and like wants
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: to like dig through the book bin and find a
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: weird book that you didn't know you didn't need I'm
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: fine with like looking at them but I don't feel
- 1:14:17Speaker 4: like getting on the floor and digging in a.
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: Box I can't get down there I'm too old for
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: that my knees.
- 1:14:21Speaker 4: I'm saying I just want somebody to show me all
- 1:14:22Speaker 4: the stuff and that's what happened today there was a
- 1:14:25Speaker 4: whole box full of these little creatures and and somebody
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: went and dug through them all and went look at
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: this one and I went oh.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Rodan give me that one and I said hey look
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: it's Rodan.
- 1:14:34Speaker 4: And so there you go. If someone would just do
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: that at all times, just like go to places and
- 1:14:39Speaker 4: then just show me all the stuff so I don't
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: have to dig through things anymore. I've just gotten.
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: I was completely irrelevant, but I didn't know if you
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: had at any point started watching the new Willow.
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: I watched the trailer the other day because when they
- 1:14:53Speaker 4: decided they were going to do it, I was like,
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: I don't know if that's a good idea. I mean,
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: people barely at the time, nobody seemed like they cared
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: about the movie. Since then, it's become sort of... You
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: know what?
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: Val Kilmer? Smoking hot in that movie.
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: Well, see, Joanne Wally was doing pretty good those days, too.
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: So I was kind of glad to see she's back
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: just for, like, you know, continuing the story. I was
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: afraid nobody was coming back, but... That Warwick Davis. I mean,
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: Warwick's done some pretty cool stuff in his career. He's
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: had a hell of a career.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: There was moths outside of our house this morning, and
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: I was so fucking excited.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: Because... Did you start singing the song?
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: You should.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: But moths are a song. You have to sing the song.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: You have to be a tiny little lady and sing
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: the song.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: This episode brought to you by moths.
- 1:15:39Speaker 5: Moths.
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: I love moths. I like fuzzy moths. I don't like
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: those weird little skinny moths. I like kind of chonky moths.
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: You're not going to give me the quote, are you?
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: Come on. Come on.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: Give me the moth quote. I don't like moths. They
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: fly like they're broken.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: I do love that line. And she knows what she's
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: talking about.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: But I love moths.
- 1:16:00Speaker 7: I love.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: That's not a quote from me. I love moths.
- 1:16:03Speaker 4: We're just quoting a quote from someone else.
- 1:16:06Speaker 1: Chunky moths are the best. I like fat moths and
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: I cannot lie. I'm on new meds.
- 1:16:13Speaker 4: Obviously. Obviously. She has been a little more chipper today.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: You talk to people. Let's discuss that. You saw people.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: That you knew. And didn't run.
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: Didn't run. Didn't hide. Didn't duck under a table. And
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: actively engaged in conversation.
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I know, it was weird.
- 1:16:33Speaker 4: It was craziness.
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: I offered to take strangers photos.
- 1:16:37Speaker 4: That I can see.
- 1:16:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: Only because I know you have that photo thing and
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: you want to like make your photos to turn out right.
- 1:16:43Speaker 4: So you want to bring that upon other people. So,
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: you know, there's that element to you. I know that.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: But conversations, you are pushing it with that one.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: I know, it was weird. I talked to a stranger.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: I didn't know that girl.
- 1:16:56Speaker 4: I didn't either.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: I don't even know her name. I still don't know
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: her name.
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: Well, luckily, we talked to quite a few people, and
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: it was quite entertaining.
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: Talked to Chuck.
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: We haven't seen Chuck in a while. It's well before COVID.
- 1:17:10Speaker 4: I mean, even the last couple shows, I feel like
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: we didn't see him.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: He wasn't here last year, I don't think, was he?
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: I don't think so. It's been a while since I've
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: seen Chuck.
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: I've waved and said hi to Steve. I think his
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: name's Steve. Is that his name?
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: Yes. Steve. He's been on the show, but it's been
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: a long time.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: Other Chris. Jeremiah. Jeremiah's coworker. Was there any one guy?
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: What's his name? Is his name Steve too?
- 1:17:35Speaker 4: Which one?
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: The guy with the booth.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: What is his name? I don't know. I just talk
- 1:17:40Speaker 4: to that guy every time we see him. But yeah,
- 1:17:42Speaker 4: I'm like, do I even know his name?
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: I think his name's Steve.
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: I think his name's Steve. We're going to leave it
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: at Steve. But yeah.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: Of course, hanging out with Dave. So that's what we
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: always do at Wonderfest. Yeah, hanging out with people. That's
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: what Wonderfest is all about.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: Good mints.
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: It kind of is. Like more than most of them,
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: it's like a weird little family and everybody wants to
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: come back year after year and hang out like more
- 1:18:03Speaker 4: than anything else. Other than buying stuff. Because there are
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: people in there and they are loading up on some
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: vinyl model kits like you wouldn't believe. I am thankfully
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: have not gone down that road and couldn't afford to
- 1:18:14Speaker 4: if I wanted to. But yeah, there are some people
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: buying some stuff. But other than that, I think they
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: just want to hang out.
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: And I'm pretty sure this is my 21st year of attending.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: That's a long run.
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Has it been there? Did we miss a year? Was
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: there a year we missed, or have we been here
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: every year?
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: I think we've been here every year. Other than the
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: COVID shutdown, I think every year that they've had one,
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: we've been here.
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: Because, I mean, they were here last year.
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: So 2020 wasn't a thing?
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: They skipped at least a year in the middle there.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: And then, yeah, we were just coming out of enough
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: COVID that people did it last year. And so, yeah.
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: My mom, as I mentioned, Wonderfest today. She's like, yeah,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I remember you going to Wonderfest before.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: Doesn't hold a grudge at all, does she?
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: Nope.
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: Doesn't hold a grudge.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Because I was like, I thought I was going to Wonderfest.
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: She's like, well, it's a good thing Wonderfest wasn't yesterday
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: because it was her anniversary.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: Her anniversary which you have you if you've been listening
- 1:19:07Speaker 4: for the last 14 times we've come to this which
- 1:19:10Speaker 4: we bring the show here every year you have probably
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: heard that somebody ditched her wedding to go to wonderfest i.
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Didn't ditch it she had to postpone it.
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: Just readjusted the day had to.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Make it later in the day who was it's saturday
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: come on i got shit to do Fucking George Romero
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: was here.
- 1:19:24Speaker 4: You ain't got nothing else to do but get married.
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: You can do that any time of the day.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: Sunday's a good wedding day. You know what? Nobody does
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: shit on Sundays.
- 1:19:32Speaker 7: Come on.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: You're already in church.
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: You're already there.
- 1:19:35Speaker 10: Yep.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: Doesn't hold a grudge at all.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: Nope, nope, nope. That's what I'm like, yep, and I'll
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: never hear the end of it either.
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: But was it worth it? Of course it was.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: Hell yeah. George Romero's still on my wall.
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: George Romero, for God's sakes.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Fuck yeah, George Romero. I kind of wish that I'd
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: actually brought an item for him to sign and not
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: just my badge.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: See, that was so early on, we didn't even think
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: about that kind of stuff.
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: They didn't have stuff there, because that means it was free, right?
- 1:19:57Speaker 4: Yeah, it was so in the olden days, they weren't even,
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: I mean, this was one of the few conventions around
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: at that point. It wasn't, and certainly the only one
- 1:20:05Speaker 4: in this part of the country. There goes Dr.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: King Green again.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: So yeah, we didn't really, they didn't, I mean, when
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: we first started coming here, people didn't have stuff to
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: sign sometimes. Because they just showed up and wanted to
- 1:20:18Speaker 4: hang out. So eventually it became the industry, the multi-million
- 1:20:23Speaker 4: dollar industry that it is today. And everybody knows what
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: to do. And they bring stacks of 8x10s and they
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: charge tons of money.
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: Well, even still, like Joe Dante, when he was here,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: he didn't charge anything.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: He had photos, but he just gave them to you.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: I mean, they were like photocopied prints, but still, it
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: was free.
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: And then, well, what's his face? Greg Nicotero? I'm going
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: to say he's wrong. He's going to say wrong.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: It's Nicotero.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: Nicotero. kind of bummed he didn't show up this year
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: but apparently he's got a real.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: Job he's got work to do so I was like
- 1:20:50Speaker 4: I'm like.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: This year I'm going to be ready I'm going to
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: get me like a fucking creep show it's going to
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: be like I'm going to take my creep show DVD
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: or something which is I'm going to have to get
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: the case because all my fucking DVDs are in a
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: binder and the case is in.
- 1:21:00Speaker 4: A box out in the garage you and your crazy
- 1:21:01Speaker 4: system so I was like I.
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: Can get something online I'll get something online something cool
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: from the raft I'll get something raft related because I
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: love the raft.
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: We discussed the raft with.
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: Him I did and I told him it was like
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: my sharks it was my Jaws it was the Bruce
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: from Jaws I gotta say, the new medication makes me
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: kind of jumble my words a little bit together. More
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: than normal. I mean, usually I got kind of.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: A weird thing going on. I'm like that every day.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: What are you going to do?
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: But my brain is working at a different level than
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: my mouth is right now. Anyways, so yeah, I was like,
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: I'm going to bring something, I'm going to buy something.
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: But luckily, I saw they'd canceled before I actually made
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: any purchases.
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he realized pretty early on that he
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: was going to have to work and not to drag
- 1:21:37Speaker 4: it out and let people down. Just let them know
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: ahead of time.
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: But when he was here, he brought nice photos, but
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: he still didn't have anything from Creepshow, I don't think.
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I don't remember what I got signed or what I
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: got you signed.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: Yeah, I was... I think I was recording in the
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: other room, wasn't I? And you were like, here, I
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: got you this.
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: Well, you were set up at the table, weren't you?
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: Were we still doing... Yeah, that far back I was.
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: I was still... We don't even bother with tables anymore.
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: We just roll.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: Because I was that person. I'm like.
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: Just roll in there.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I'm like, I need to get one for my brother.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: He's at the table and can't come up here.
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: And they were like, that sounds made up.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:22:06Speaker 4: Everything about it sounds made up.
- 1:22:09Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, Joe Dante's was awesome. Yeah. Because
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: I mean... I got him to sign the gizmo. And
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: I was just like, I walked away and I was
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: going to grab one of the striped ones just to
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: have one. And he's like, I want to sign that
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: one too. So I'm like, ah! So I got two
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: of them signed.
- 1:22:23Speaker 4: I've even told Dave, I was like, you should bring
- 1:22:25Speaker 4: Joe Dante back. He was awesome. And like, we didn't
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: even have the show then. Like, now I'd like to
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: talk to him. Because if anybody wants to talk and
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: be a super geek about movies, it's Joe Dante. But yeah,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: he said he doesn't think he can convince him. He's
- 1:22:37Speaker 4: got too much going on out there and could lure
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: him back to this part of the world.
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: Tell him to bring in Mark Singer.
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: I've tried that too nobody listens to.
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: My requests mark singer if you're out there and you
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: hear me i will take you out to eat and
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: i will talk to you.
- 1:22:56Speaker 4: Are you doing some of the witch magic on him
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: mark singer i'm doing the hand thing you gotta do
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: the hand.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: There's a really good pizza place by our house it's.
- 1:23:04Speaker 4: Kind of like that bella lugosi thing from.
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: I'll take you to rich's.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: Or you can just come here and we'll take them
- 1:23:10Speaker 4: to that pizza place we went to. We go to
- 1:23:12Speaker 4: that same pizza place all the time.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Richo's is much better.
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's far away too. Right down the street, Mark,
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: we'll go get you a little mini pizza. You can
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: pick out your toppings. It'll be great.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: It'll be fantastic. You can even get a calzone. I
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: will splurge for a calzone. I don't even care.
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: That's saying something. Most people she doesn't even want to
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: talk to. She's going to buy you a pizza and
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: or a calzone.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: I'm going to have a pizza and a calzone. Maybe
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: some breadsticks. I don't care.
- 1:23:36Speaker 4: Mark, you better cash in on this. That's all I'm saying.
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: Some beer cheese i don't even like beer cheese.
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: I'm okay with it but it's been a long time
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: since i had.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: It is it non-alcoholic beer cheese i'm pretty sure they
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: cook out the alcohol i don't know how it works.
- 1:23:51Speaker 4: I think with most cooking that's how it goes or
- 1:23:53Speaker 4: that's how people claim that it goes now i know
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: i've seen things get made that way and i think
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: it burns it out and there's other stuff i question Okay.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: Well, back to my mom. I'm going to tell another
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: side story. We went to the health fair this morning because,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: god damn, I love free shit.
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: That is kind of your thing, getting free stuff.
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: I do love free shit. I got a free Twizzler
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: at the... That's my purse still, my emergency Twizzler.
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: She did scam a free Twizzler inside. But she's keeping it.
- 1:24:18Speaker 4: It's an emergency Twizzler.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Yeah, my mom went to the health fair this morning.
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: Free shit, fuck yeah. And she was wearing her... Make
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: it so. Cartoon, but it's got him holding a sewing machine.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: So it's make it so, like SCW. So yeah, it's
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: got Picard. Like little cute cartoon chibi versions of like
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Picard and Riker. You have no idea my mom's frustration.
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: Because everyone's like, oh, I like your shirt. And she's like, well,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: do you know what it is? No. Oh my God.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: She's not real easy going on that kind of stuff.
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: I think she needs some of my pills.
- 1:24:55Speaker 4: She probably does, because she seems like she gets upset
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: at things pretty quickly. And about her things that she's into,
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: I think she assumes everybody's going to be into, which
- 1:25:04Speaker 4: I've just given up on that. I know the weird
- 1:25:06Speaker 4: things I like, nobody else likes, and whatever, that's fine.
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: If you find somebody who shares it with you, that's great,
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: but don't expect it. I don't know that she gets that.
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: At least four or five people liked her shirt, but
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: had no idea what it was from.
- 1:25:17Speaker 4: They just like sewing.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: I guess. One booth there was like, what we do
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: is we sell these stuffed animals. And she's like, all
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: the economic boat covers. Boat interiors. But at least she
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: found one person. The last person who said anything. I
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: think my mom was about ready to snap at that
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: fucking point.
- 1:25:34Speaker 4: I can see that happening.
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: She was like, do you know who it is? She's like, yeah,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: it's Riker and Picard. She stood over there and talked
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: nerd talk for a good five minutes. Talk about the
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: new Star Trek and the new whatever one, whichever has
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: fucking somebody else playing Spock. I don't remember. She said
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: who it was.
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: There are several new Star Trek things going on out here.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't watch any of it. It's
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: not the original goddamn series with bones. I don't give
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: a shit.
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: Well, I'm sure there's plenty of Star Trek talk going
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: on inside that building right now.
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: Everybody would have fucking understood my mom's shirt in there.
- 1:26:08Speaker 4: Oh, they would have loved it. People would have stopped
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: her and made specific comments and probably wouldn't have got
- 1:26:14Speaker 4: the other reference. I mean, I guess they know how
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: to spell. Usually nerds are good at that kind of stuff.
- 1:26:17Speaker 4: So they might have got it, but I don't think
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: they would have been into that part. But they would
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: have certainly been on board with the Picard and Riker stuff.
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: Yeah, they were just not at all having it. And
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: I'm just like.
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: My mom's getting mad.
- 1:26:31Speaker 4: Somewhere there's some Star Trek cosplayer out there that that's
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: like the best shirt they've ever seen.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: Because my mom sews. That's the whole thing. And it's
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: the whole make it so. I have never intentionally watched
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: Next Generation. It might have been on in the background
- 1:26:46Speaker 1: as a small child. I never watched it. I've never
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: seeked it out.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: I watched it a lot when it was on originally.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: Improper use of the word seeked.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: Done been seeked is the way you're supposed to phrase that. Yeah,
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: I liked it when it first came on. I got
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: into it then. I'm still not as Trek as I
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: am Wars, so I think when it went off the air,
- 1:27:06Speaker 4: I never quite got into it after the fact. I
- 1:27:09Speaker 4: just kind of watched it on its original run, and
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: I liked some of the other. I thought Voyager had
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: some really cool stuff going on, but yeah, I don't know.
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: I was just never quite as hardcore into the week-to-week
- 1:27:20Speaker 4: series on those.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Unless it has DeForest Kelly.
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. If I got Bones being a
- 1:27:24Speaker 4: cranky old bastard.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: Ah.
- 1:27:26Speaker 4: Yep, I'm on board with that.
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: He was. He was so damn snarky.
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: He was.
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: I love him. He was.
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: You gotta love that guy.
- 1:27:32Speaker 13: I do.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: He was the best part. It's like, I was definitely
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: pro-Spock for a long time, but goddamn.
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: Bones is just so damn entertaining.
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: I know.
- 1:27:39Speaker 4: And like, you know, Spock gets his own episodes. He
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: gets to steal the show sometimes. Poor Bones ain't never
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: gonna get that. He's just there to be the third
- 1:27:46Speaker 4: wheel and to be a cranky bastard and give Spock shit.
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: And like, that's his job. And he does it, damn it.
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: And he's good at it.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Damn it, Jim.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: He's good at it.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: Specifically had carl urban right damn it misty on my
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: uh when i got carl urban's autograph yeah he was
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: gorgeous too.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: They didn't go wrong on that casting i gotta say
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: that was a lot of fun too beautiful.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: Where were we oh yeah we're at wonderfest sorry i
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: got derailed amongst all the people there was so many
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: people here this year it's like it has made it
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: it has come back.
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: Again, I think people have been gearing up for two years,
- 1:28:26Speaker 4: even though it was here last year. I think not
- 1:28:28Speaker 4: as many people came last year, and then, even then,
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: they just, nobody's gotten out as much as they usually do,
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: so these guys that are, waiting to spend tons of
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: money on vinyl models haven't been anywhere, haven't seen any,
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: and they were raring to go to blow some cash.
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: They haven't bathed.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: I don't know nothing about that. But they seemed like
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: they were ready to go buy some model kits.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Because when Dave was saying, I want to turn the
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: AC off, I'm like, whoa, no, no.
- 1:28:53Speaker 4: Don't do that. No, that's a terrible idea.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: I need to crank that AC up.
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: With any convention, that's the first rule. Keep it cool.
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: Keep these nerds refrigerated.
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: Keep them chilled. That's your best plan.
- 1:29:04Speaker 1: Keep them on ice. You don't want them sweating.
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: Definitely not.
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: No, thank you.
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: We know our group. We know how you operate within
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: said group.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I bathed. I'm not the same as these people.
- 1:29:18Speaker 4: These are our people, though. I bathe pretty regularly, but I.
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: Know our people. I'm not saying all nerds don't bathe.
- 1:29:28Speaker 4: Just some. We are geeks. We can make fun of them.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: That's how that works, right?
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: But there were some wonderful people in there, too.
- 1:29:36Speaker 10: Yep.
- 1:29:37Speaker 4: As always. There's always a good crew there running it.
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: And always just kind of... Again, I think it's those
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: same people. It tells a lot that we see the
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: same people we know from years and years and I
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: think everybody there is having that same experience. It's just
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: kind of like a hangout session.
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: I can make fun of the same people year after year.
- 1:29:56Speaker 4: It's just a hangout session for the geeks. Once a year,
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: they get together and come here and bring their models
- 1:30:01Speaker 4: so they can show off for each other and just
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: hang out. Well, have we run through our activities today?
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I think so.
- 1:30:10Speaker 4: It has been another fun and wonderful Wonderfest. So you
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: should be part of that family we've been discussing and
- 1:30:18Speaker 4: come hang out here every year and just.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: And depending on what meds I'm on, I might say
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: hi to you.
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: She might. You never know. This year, super friendly. So
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: maybe you'll get lucky next time. Don't get used to it.
- 1:30:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:30:29Speaker 4: Or she might just punch you in the face.
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: Who knows?
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: But hopefully that sort of thing won't happen. Come hang
- 1:30:34Speaker 4: out and look at some cool models.
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: I've never in all my life punched anybody in the face. Except, well,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: I've kind of wrapped boyfriend in the head. But that's
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: about it.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: I'm sure you think he was asking for it.
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: He was snoring. Bitch had it coming.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: All that aside, go to wonderfest.com and see what they've
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: got planned for next year. We've already been discussing the
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: goings on. We know things are in the works already
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: for next time around. So go make your plans now
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: and be part of it next year.
- 1:31:06Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: Otherwise, that about does it. We will return next time.
- 1:31:10Speaker 4: Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 1:31:30Speaker 8: Doctors have come from distant cities just to see me
- 1:31:38Speaker 8: Stand over my bed disbelieving what they're seeing They say
- 1:31:46Speaker 8: I must be one of.
- 1:31:48Speaker 13: The wonders of God's own creation And as far as
- 1:31:55Speaker 13: they see, they cannot find no explanation. Newspapers ask intimate
- 1:32:07Speaker 13: questions while confessions.
- 1:32:12Speaker 6: Reach into my head to steal the glory.
- 1:32:17Speaker 8: Of my story.
- 1:32:19Speaker 4: They say I.
- 1:32:20Speaker 5: Must be one of the wonders that's on creation. And
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: as far as they see, they can offer no explanation.
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: Faith, smile, and destiny. Laugh that she can't do my cradle.
- 1:32:58Speaker 12: No, this time we'll be able. Laugh that my body's
- 1:33:03Speaker 12: still empty. No, this time we'll be gifted.
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: With love, with patience.
- 1:33:15Speaker 4: She'll make her.
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: Way She'll make her way People see me I'm a.
- 1:33:22Speaker 12: Challenge to your balance.
- 1:33:40Speaker 7: God bless you.
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: Faith Smile now Destiny Blast that she came to my
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: cradle Know this child will be able Blast that.
- 1:34:30Speaker 12: She came to my mother No, it's time to be gifted.
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: I wonder if I go back in there and get
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: another emergency Twizzler.
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: Probably.
- 1:35:18Speaker 1: I haven't eaten my current one yet.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: Unless they cleared them out already. People would do that.
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: They would take all the Twizzlers for themselves. Oh, they would.
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: They would.
- 1:35:25Speaker 9: This episode is a production of Movie Meltdown, produced and
