- Lucas: Welcome back, Luna. And welcome back to everyone listening. It's episode 219 of Learn Spanish with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! So last time we were talking about winter weather. Hace frío, está nevando... but I feel like I missed something. Lucas: What's that? Luna: Well, if it's cold, what do I say? I mean, I want to say 'I'm cold', not just 'it's cold'. Lucas: Oh, that's a great point. So today, let's talk about talking about being cold and what you wear. Perfect for this time of year. Luna: Yes! Let's bundle up in Spanish. Lucas: First phrase: Tengo frío. It means 'I'm cold'. Say it with me: Tengo frío. Luna: Tengo frío. Tengo frío. So it's like 'I have cold'. Lucas: Exactly. In Spanish, you 'have' cold instead of 'being' cold. So when you step outside and feel the chill, you say: Tengo frío. Luna: Tengo frío. I'm going to use that every time I step outside now. Lucas: Good. Now, when you're that cold, you probably want to put on something warm. Voy a ponerme el abrigo. That means 'I'm going to put on my coat'. Luna: Voy a ponerme el abrigo. That's a long one. Voy a ponerme el abrigo. Lucas: You got it. El abrigo is the coat. And voy a ponerme is 'I'm going to put on'. So: Voy a ponerme el abrigo. Luna: Voy a ponerme el abrigo. But wait, what if I don't have an abrigo? What about a scarf? Lucas: Then you say: Necesito una bufanda. 'I need a scarf.' Luna: Necesito una bufanda. Bufanda. That's a fun word. Lucas: It is. Necesito una bufanda. And if it's really cold, you might also grab gloves. Me pongo los guantes. 'I put on my gloves.' Luna: Me pongo los guantes. Me pongo los guantes. So me pongo is like 'I put on' for clothes. Lucas: Exactly. You can use me pongo for anything you wear. Me pongo los guantes. Me pongo el abrigo. And for a hat, you'd say: El gorro es muy caliente. Luna: El gorro es muy caliente. Wait, caliente is hot, like temperature. So 'the hat is very hot'? Lucas: Right, but in Spanish, we use caliente for warm things that keep you warm. So it means 'the hat is very warm'. Luna: Oh, got it. El gorro es muy caliente. So a warm hat is a good thing. Lucas: Yes. Now let's put it all together in a little scene. Imagine you're about to go outside. It's snowing. What do you say first? Luna: Tengo frío. Lucas: Great. And then? Luna: Voy a ponerme el abrigo. Necesito una bufanda. Me pongo los guantes. Lucas: Perfect. And you grab your gorro because it's caliente. Luna: El gorro es muy caliente. Now I feel ready for winter. Lucas: Let's do a quick recap. We have Tengo frío. Lucas: I need a scarf. Luna: Necesito una bufanda. Lucas: I put on my gloves. Luna: Me pongo los guantes. Lucas: The hat is very warm. Luna: El gorro es muy caliente. Lucas: Perfect. Now you're all set for winter. Keep these phrases handy, and practice them until we talk again. See you next time. Luna: Adiós, everyone. Stay warm.
