- 0:04Good morning. This is the Sacramento Brief, your
- 0:08weekday roundup of overnight headlines and what's
- 0:11ahead across the city. I'm Carol. It's Tuesday,
- 0:16August 11th, 2026. Let's get you caught up. We
- 0:20begin in South Sacramento where a police standoff
- 0:23ended with an arrest after a property caught
- 0:25on fire Monday night. Just after 7 .45 p .m.,
- 0:28Sacramento police went to La Fresa Court in
- 0:31the Parkway neighborhood to arrest a man on outstanding
- 0:34warrants. Police say that while the officers
- 0:36were attempting to contact him, the suspect allegedly
- 0:39set the property on fire and climbed onto the
- 0:42roof. Sacramento firefighters were dispatched
- 0:45shortly after 8 .15 and worked to extinguish
- 0:48the flames while police remained on scene. Once
- 0:51the fire was out, crisis negotiators continued
- 0:54working to convince the man to surrender peacefully.
- 0:57That standoff lasted several hours, but shortly
- 1:00after 11 p .m., police announced the suspect
- 1:03had been detained. No injuries were reported,
- 1:06and the exact cause of the fire remains under
- 1:08investigation. And now we have an update to a
- 1:12fatal collision that shut down Highway 50 for
- 1:15several hours early Monday morning. A roadway
- 1:19construction worker was killed. A 24 -year -old
- 1:21woman has been arrested on suspicion of DUI,
- 1:24vehicular manslaughter, and felony hit and run.
- 1:28According to the California Highway Patrol, the
- 1:30crash happened around 12 .30 a .m. on Monday
- 1:33morning on the eastbound Highway 50 near Stockton
- 1:37Boulevard, where crews were performing overnight
- 1:40sealing work. Investigators say 24 -year -old
- 1:44Ruby Lorenzo of Escalon was driving a Honda Accord
- 1:47when she collided with another vehicle traveling
- 1:49in the same direction. CHPs say her car then
- 1:53entered the closed construction zone, striking
- 1:56a construction vehicle, a roadway worker, and
- 1:59a guardrail. Officials say the impact sent the
- 2:02worker off the overpass onto Stockton Boulevard
- 2:06below. He was pronounced dead at the scene. CHP
- 2:10say Lorenzo then fled the area, struck another
- 2:12vehicle moments later. That driver called 911
- 2:16and continued to follow her until officers were
- 2:19able to pull her over near 65th and take her
- 2:22into custody. The victim is believed to be in
- 2:25his 40s and a contracted Caltrans worker employed
- 2:29by Bayline Cutting and Coring. The investigation
